  1. The scripture reading comes from Romans chapter 3 and 1 Peter chapter 1.

Romans 3 chapter mention 1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. In Romans 3 verse 21, we read,

    Romans 3:21

  4. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law,

  5. although the law and the prophets bear witness to it,

  6. the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

  7. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  8. and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

  9. whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood to be received by faith.

  10. Then, in 1 Peter chapter 1 verse 14, we read,

    1 Peter 1:14

  11. Amen.

  12. Great. Thank you so much, Janet.

  13. Good morning, everybody.

  14. On behalf of Claire and myself, I know it's the 10th of January,

  15. but I want to just welcome you to 2021 and say Happy New Year.

  16. I really wish that we could do this face-to-face.

  17. I wish I could see you and give you a big hug,

  18. look you in the eye, and wish you the best for this next year.

  19. But I guess doing it through the screen, it's just not quite the same.

  20. But really, all the best for this new year to each and every one of us.

  21. And I have been praying for us.

  22. The elders have been praying for us as a church.

  23. Many of you, we've been praying for you by name over the last couple of weeks.

  24. And we really are trusting that this year,

  25. despite all the challenges that we face,

  26. will be an outstanding year for us.

  27. A year in which we walk deeply with Christ.

  28. A year in which we experience His grace in a whole new and profound way.

  29. And so really, just trusting for a fantastic year as we walk with God together.

  30. We want you to know that we love you.

  31. We're so grateful to be able to walk this journey called life and ministry

  32. and following Jesus together with you.

  33. And so a warm welcome to you.

  34. Will you join us as we pray together?

  35. I am very excited for this morning.

  36. I have been praying so much for this morning's message.

  37. And I'd love for you to join me as we pray together.

  38. Let's ask God to speak to us from His Word.

  39. So Heavenly Father, as we come to Your Word this morning,

  40. God, we say this so often,

  41. we're not in the least bit interested in hearing the opinions of man.

  42. We are not in the least bit interested, God,

  43. in what I have to say or think.

  44. We want to know what the truth of Your Word is.

  45. We want Your Word, God, to arrest our hearts and to set us free.

  46. And God, this morning as we look at this incredible teaching of Your Word,

  47. how You died, Jesus, to set us free,

  48. God, I pray that that will happen.

  49. I pray, God, that You really, by the power of Your Spirit,

  50. will be at work in our hearts.

  51. And so I pray, God, may Your Word come alive to us this morning.

  52. May You bring healing and restoration,

  53. redemption to our hearts and our lives, God.

  54. I pray, God, by the power of Your Spirit,

  55. won't You be at work?

  56. God, I pray, let us hear and take stock of only that which You want us to hear.

  57. God, come and glorify Your own name.

  58. Come and speak to us this morning.

  59. We want to hear from the living, risen God from Your Word.

  60. And so we ask that in Your powerful and Your gracious name.

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. When I was growing up, I grew up in South Africa.

  64. We had a lot of space.

  65. And our family loved playing sports.

  66. I had two brothers, an older brother, a younger brother.

  67. And we were forever playing sports, cricket, rugby, soccer.

  68. And I had a very happy childhood in many ways.

  69. But one of the challenges was that my dad had a bad back.

  70. The lower vertebra of his back were damaged earlier on in his life.

  71. And so even as he would play sports with us, cricket and soccer,

  72. we were always very aware of the pain in his back and his lack of mobility,

  73. his lack of ability to move.

  74. When I was about 10 or 12 years old, somewhere around there,

  75. my dad had another back operation, I think his third or fourth operation.

  76. And finally in this one, what they did was they took the three vertebra,

  77. the lower part of his back, they put bone in the middle,

  78. cleaned out the disc, and then they put titanium rods

  79. through that kind of new infrastructure and fused these vertebra together.

  80. And thereafter, my dad's back was rock solid, as strong as you could imagine.

  81. After that, he went hiking to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak of Africa.

  82. He hiked to the base camp of Mount Everest in the Himalayas.

  83. He's gone on motorbike trips and camping trips.

  84. And today my dad is almost 70, and he is as strong and as healthy as most 50-year-olds.

  85. That operation brought a freedom to my dad that I had never seen in the years growing up before that.

  86. Now I'll tell you that story because we're doing this series called Gospel Orthodoxy.

  87. And the word ortho in the beginning of orthodoxy means straight or upright or correct.

  88. And it's the same word that is in the word orthopedics.

  89. An orthopedic surgeon is somebody who is concerned with the skeleton, the bone structure of your body,

  90. to make sure that your body is healthy and strong.

  91. If a body has a healthy or strong skeleton, especially a spine, a backbone,

  92. it gives incredible freedom and mobility and ability to the body to do all sorts of things.

  93. But when your skeleton, when your backbone is damaged, it's broken,

  94. when it's not working well, it restricts you in incredible ways, just like my dad experienced.

  95. In the same way, just like a human body needs to have a strong and healthy skeleton,

  96. needs to be straight and upright and correct,

  97. so our belief structure, what we know and understand about the Gospel,

  98. about who God is, about who we are in God,

  99. needs to be correct and straight and upright

  100. in order for our spiritual lives to flourish, to be healthy and strong.

  101. As any doctor will tell us, that if our bone structure, our skeleton,

  102. is out of joint or damaged or we have a bad posture,

  103. it can really affect us for years to come, often later down the road.

  104. In the same way, when we've got a crooked orthodoxy,

  105. a crooked understanding of who God is and what the Gospel is all about,

  106. it will lead to spiritual disease and decay and apathy in the years to come.

  107. And so that's what this series is really all about.

  108. And so last week, Chris helped us, we looked at the biblical doctrine of justification.

  109. And justification says that if you are in Christ, you're given a new status before God.

  110. You're no longer under the category of condemned, you're under the category of the righteous.

  111. No longer under the category of guilty, under the category of grace.

  112. Grace.

  113. And this is not because of what we've done, it's because of what Jesus has done.

  114. Christ's righteousness is given to us, credited to us.

  115. You may remember that amazing verse in 2 Corinthians.

  116. It says,

  117. And friends, to the degree to which we understand and know this incredible truth will change your life.

  118. To the degree to which we understand this will be the degree to which we experience freedom,

  119. freedom from condemnation, freedom from guilt, freedom from performance,

  120. freedom from having to worry about whether God loves us and accepts us.

  121. To the degree to which we know this will be the degree to which we experience deep security in God's love and acceptance of us.

  122. Most Christians functionally live as if our acceptance of God is based on our performance.

  123. The gospel tells us that our acceptance before God is found on Christ's performance, on the cross,

  124. and that that is credited to us as if it were our own.

  125. This is the scandalous good news of the gospel.

  126. So that's justification which we looked at last week.

  127. This morning, I want us to look at this another amazing doctrine which is the doctrine of redemption.

  128. Redemption.

  129. If justification means freedom from guilt, redemption means freedom from slavery.

  130. Now when we hear of slavery,

  131. we might think in our minds have this image of 18th century transatlantic slave trade,

  132. where people, many from Africa, were kidnapped, trafficked into slavery,

  133. sent across the ocean to work in the new American colonies.

  134. But actually slavery in the ancient world was very different.

  135. It was not nearly as brutal as that.

  136. It was far more common in many ways.

  137. And slavery in the ancient world,

  138. people found themselves in slavery for a variety of reasons.

  139. It could have been because of warfare or battle.

  140. People were taken as the spoils of war.

  141. But actually a very common form of slavery was

  142. when people got into financial difficulty or debt,

  143. they would often, as a form of indentured servanthood,

  144. submit themselves to a kind of slavery in order to pay off their debt.

  145. In the ancient world, often people put themselves into slavery,

  146. whether voluntarily or involuntarily,

  147. to pay off a debt that they earn.

  148. And yet unlike the 18th century slave trade in North America,

  149. generally speaking, a slave in the ancient world could purchase their freedom,

  150. either through they themselves or someone else paying off their debt

  151. by paying what was called a ransom.

  152. And so what would happen is someone would get into financial difficulty,

  153. maybe debt,

  154. and they would either sell a property of theirs

  155. or maybe themselves into slavery in order to pay off that debt.

  156. And then they would work for a period of time,

  157. a couple of years perhaps,

  158. to work towards their freedom.

  159. But often what would happen is a family member would come

  160. and pay off their debt for them

  161. or buy out their freedom

  162. in order to either restore that property

  163. or restore them to a state of freedom

  164. by paying this ransom price.

  165. And that act of paying money to buy someone's freedom

  166. was called redemption.

  167. And so redemption really means to be released

  168. or set free or restored by way of payment,

  169. to be freed by way of ransom.

  170. In the New Testament,

  171. the word ransom and the word redemption are almost identical.

  172. They have the same Greek root word.

  173. And so having been taken captive or enslaved,

  174. upon the payment of some price,

  175. your freedom was restored.

  176. You were redeemed.

  177. Now, in the Bible,

  178. there's lots of stories or imageries that illustrate this.

  179. One of the best ones is the story of Hosea.

  180. You might know the story,

  181. but Hosea was a prophet,

  182. a well-respected man of God in ancient Israel.

  183. He was given a message by God to speak to God's people.

  184. And one of the ways he delivered this message

  185. was through dramatization,

  186. through acting it out.

  187. And God calls Hosea to marry a lady called Goma.

  188. The trouble is Goma is a prostitute.

  189. And so just as today the case was in the ancient times,

  190. many people found themselves in prostitution,

  191. not by way of career choice.

  192. They found themselves there because they were forced into it.

  193. They were often owned by a pimp,

  194. some kind of master.

  195. And they were maybe sold into prostitution

  196. because of a family debt.

  197. A family member maybe sold someone into prostitution.

  198. Maybe they put themselves into prostitution

  199. because of a debt or poverty that they came across in their lives.

  200. Maybe they were taken as a spoil of all.

  201. But however it happened,

  202. Goma finds herself trapped,

  203. enslaved in the world of prostitution.

  204. And God calls Hosea to marry her.

  205. In order to do so,

  206. he first needs to go and redeem her,

  207. to buy her out of slavery.

  208. And so Hosea goes down to the marketplace,

  209. to the town square,

  210. and he says,

  211. I want to marry Goma.

  212. And her owners say,

  213. okay,

  214. well,

  215. that's going to cost you.

  216. And so Hosea brings a sum of money,

  217. 15 silver coins,

  218. 350 liters of barley,

  219. a massive amount of harvest of barley.

  220. Together,

  221. it comes to 30 pieces of silver,

  222. the price for a common slave.

  223. And he hands it over,

  224. and he buys Goma out of her slavery.

  225. He redeems her,

  226. and he brings her home.

  227. This time,

  228. not as an object of lust and abuse,

  229. but as his wife.

  230. He brings her home,

  231. not just to satisfy himself,

  232. but to pour out his love upon her.

  233. Hosea wasn't just buying her out of prostitution.

  234. He was redeeming her humanity,

  235. her personhood.

  236. Friends,

  237. can you imagine how Goma must have felt

  238. when she hears that here comes another man

  239. that wants to take her for himself.

  240. Here's going to be another man

  241. she must have thought

  242. is going to treat me like everyone else.

  243. And yet,

  244. unbelievably,

  245. incredibly,

  246. she finds that

  247. Hosea is not going to abuse her and use her.

  248. Hosea is redeeming her

  249. to pour out his love upon her.

  250. Redeeming her

  251. to bring her home

  252. as his wife.

  253. Friends,

  254. you know,

  255. this is what Christianity

  256. is all about.

  257. Christianity is not a self-improvement project

  258. and attempt to be a better person

  259. and attempt to become a more moral person.

  260. Christianity is not a philosophy

  261. about how to get in touch with your inner self

  262. or how to become a more spiritual person.

  263. The declaration of Scripture

  264. is that apart from Christ,

  265. outside of Jesus,

  266. we are lost.

  267. We are enslaved to our sinful nature.

  268. We are enslaved to our sinful habits

  269. and to the power of Satan.

  270. And yet,

  271. Christ Jesus is our Redeemer,

  272. a Deliverer,

  273. one who has come to buy us out of slavery,

  274. buy us out of captivity,

  275. to set us free,

  276. to buy us out of the controlling influence of Satan,

  277. out of the destructive patterns

  278. of our sinful nature

  279. and addictions,

  280. and to bring us into freedom.

  281. Colossians chapter 1 says this,

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  282. He has redeemed us

  283. out of the kingdom of darkness

  284. and transferred us

  285. into the kingdom of His beloved Son.

  286. In Jesus,

  287. we have a Redeemer,

  288. one who has come to pay the ransom price,

  289. the redemption price,

  290. not just 30 silver coins,

  291. but with His life.

  292. Remember that great passage

  293. that Janet read to us earlier.

  294. It says this,

  295. you were ransomed,

  296. you were redeemed,

  297. not with perishable things

  298. such as silver or gold.

  299. Jesus didn't come and say,

  300. okay,

  301. let me come,

  302. I got a billion dollars,

  303. I got 50 billion dollars,

  304. how much do you want?

  305. Jesus ransomed us,

  306. Jesus redeemed us

  307. with His precious blood,

  308. with His life on the cross.

  309. Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  310. Jesus says this,

  311. the Son of Man has come,

  312. not to be served,

  313. but to serve,

  314. to give His life as a redemption,

  315. as a ransom for you and I.

  316. So there's this great hymn

  317. Francis Light wrote

  318. hundreds of years ago,

  319. Praise my soul,

  320. the King of heaven,

  321. to His feet thy tribute bring,

  322. ransomed,

  323. healed,

  324. restored,

  325. forgiven,

  326. who like thee

  327. His praise should sing.

  328. Friends,

  329. this is the gospel,

  330. this is Christianity,

  331. this is what

  332. the entire Bible is about,

  333. how we were lost

  334. and enslaved

  335. to our sinful nature,

  336. to the forces of Satan,

  337. but Christ has come

  338. to redeem us

  339. and to ransom us,

  340. to buy us out of slavery

  341. and bondage,

  342. ransomed,

  343. healed,

  344. restored,

  345. forgiven,

  346. this is the gospel.

  347. Now,

  348. the question is,

  349. what exactly

  350. has Jesus

  351. ransomed us from?

  352. What does Jesus,

  353. in what way

  354. does Jesus redeem us?

  355. I mean,

  356. not many of us

  357. are walking around

  358. with chains

  359. tied to our ankles

  360. or our feet,

  361. so what exactly

  362. does it mean

  363. when Scripture says

  364. that in Him

  365. we have redemption?

  366. Well,

  367. that's a brilliant question.

  368. redemption.

  369. This morning,

  370. I want us to look

  371. at how the New Testament

  372. speaks of three ways

  373. that we have redemption

  374. in Christ.

  375. In Christ,

  376. we have freedom

  377. from the penalty of sin,

  378. we have freedom

  379. from the power of sin,

  380. and thirdly,

  381. freedom from the very

  382. presence of sin.

  383. Let's look at the first one,

  384. freedom from the penalty

  385. of sin.

  386. Look at me,

  387. look with me

  388. at Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  389. and this is what

  390. Janet read to us earlier.

  391. Paul writes this.

  392. We looked at this

  393. last week with Chris.

  394. Paul writes,

  395. For all have sinned

  396. and fallen short

  397. of the glory of God,

  398. but are justified

  399. by His grace

  400. as a gift

  401. through the redemption,

  402. there's our word,

  403. that is in Jesus Christ,

  404. by His blood

  405. to be received

  406. by faith.

  407. In Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  408. Paul says it this way,

  409. he says,

  410. Christ redeemed us,

  411. there's our word,

  412. from the curse

  413. of the law,

  414. by becoming

  415. a curse for us.

  416. Christ redeemed us

  417. from the curse

  418. of the law.

  419. Now,

  420. what on earth

  421. does that mean?

  422. What it means

  423. is that Christ

  424. has redeemed us,

  425. brought us out of slavery,

  426. out of bondage,

  427. from the charge,

  428. the curse,

  429. that was hanging

  430. over our heads,

  431. on account of us

  432. having broken

  433. God's holy law.

  434. So picture this with me.

  435. Imagine you are

  436. traveling in some

  437. foreign country,

  438. you go somewhere

  439. for work,

  440. and you've been

  441. there two weeks,

  442. you've done some work,

  443. you're on your way

  444. back to the airport

  445. to come back home

  446. to Hong Kong.

  447. And while you're in the taxi

  448. on the way to the airport,

  449. you're minding

  450. your own business

  451. and you hear

  452. all these sirens,

  453. these police sirens

  454. and motorbikes

  455. coming up behind you

  456. and you think,

  457. oh, that's interesting.

  458. And the next minute,

  459. they pull in front

  460. of your taxi

  461. and they steer your taxi

  462. off the road

  463. to a standstill.

  464. And the next minute,

  465. these policemen

  466. jump out of the car,

  467. they open the taxi doors,

  468. they pull you out,

  469. tie your hands

  470. behind your back,

  471. they arrest you

  472. and put you

  473. in a police vehicle.

  474. And you say,

  475. what on earth is going on?

  476. And all they say is,

  477. you have the right

  478. to remain silent.

  479. Anything you say

  480. can and will be

  481. held against you.

  482. You go to the police station

  483. and you say,

  484. what's going on?

  485. And you find out

  486. that you've broken

  487. some law

  488. of the land,

  489. some very serious law.

  490. Friends,

  491. you are under the curse,

  492. the charge,

  493. of having broken

  494. the law.

  495. You are detained

  496. as you face

  497. the charges

  498. of the law.

  499. Friends,

  500. look at what Paul says here.

  501. He says,

  502. all of us have sinned

  503. and fallen short

  504. of God's standard

  505. of glory.

  506. All of us have come

  507. under the charge

  508. of having broken

  509. God's holy law.

  510. All of us have lived

  511. for ourselves.

  512. We've exalted ourselves

  513. and honored ourselves

  514. rather than Christ

  515. and God our maker.

  516. We have pushed him aside

  517. and we've worshipped ourselves.

  518. We've neither loved God

  519. nor loved others

  520. more than ourselves.

  521. We have broken

  522. God's holy law.

  523. You've done it,

  524. I've done it,

  525. we've all done it.

  526. And the result is

  527. that we are under

  528. a charge,

  529. under a curse

  530. of having broken

  531. God's law.

  532. And so look at

  533. what Galatians says.

  534. He says,

  535. Jesus Christ

  536. redeemed us,

  537. brought us

  538. out of

  539. the bondage

  540. of the curse

  541. of the law

  542. by becoming

  543. a curse for us.

  544. By taking on

  545. that curse himself.

  546. Jesus brought us

  547. out of bondage

  548. by suffering

  549. the consequences

  550. of our guilt

  551. in our place.

  552. Jesus had his life

  553. taken from him

  554. on the cross.

  555. He paid the price

  556. that we deserve

  557. so that we can be

  558. set free

  559. from that charge

  560. that is leveled

  561. against us.

  562. The price has been paid,

  563. the debt has been settled,

  564. the charge of guilt

  565. has been nullified

  566. and removed.

  567. The charge sheet

  568. has been torn in two

  569. and has been cast aside.

  570. Ephesians 1

  571. says it like this,

  572. In him we have redemption.

  573. There's our word.

  574. Through his blood

  575. the forgiveness

  576. of our sins.

  577. Friends,

  578. this is the great news

  579. of the gospel.

  580. Now,

  581. as a sidebar,

  582. the New Testament

  583. says something

  584. very interesting

  585. because it says

  586. that Christ

  587. has also redeemed us

  588. from the power

  589. of Satan.

  590. Now,

  591. in what way

  592. has Jesus redeemed us

  593. from the power

  594. of Satan?

  595. One of the ways

  596. that the Bible

  597. says Satan

  598. torments

  599. and makes life

  600. difficult

  601. for followers

  602. of Jesus

  603. is through

  604. his accusation.

  605. In fact,

  606. the book of Revelation

  607. Satan is called

  608. the accuser.

  609. And Satan

  610. often comes to

  611. believers

  612. and he says,

  613. How can God

  614. love you?

  615. You're such a sinner.

  616. Do you really think

  617. that God loves you,

  618. that God accepts you

  619. when you've done

  620. this and this?

  621. How on earth

  622. can you think

  623. that God loves you?

  624. And he accuses us

  625. and he reminds us

  626. of our sin.

  627. But friends,

  628. in the gospel,

  629. Jesus has dismantled

  630. that accusation

  631. of Satan.

  632. He's taken

  633. his primary weapon

  634. and he's disarmed him.

  635. Look at how

  636. Colossians says it.

  637. Having forgiven us

  638. our trespasses

  639. by cancelling

  640. the record

  641. of debt

  642. that stood

  643. against us

  644. with its legal demands

  645. through his self-offering

  646. at the cross,

  647. Jesus disarmed

  648. the rulers

  649. and the authorities

  650. and put them

  651. to open shame.

  652. Jesus took

  653. the very weapon

  654. that Satan uses,

  655. they're accusing us

  656. of our sin,

  657. and he disarms him.

  658. He renders him

  659. a void.

  660. David Mathis

  661. says it like this,

  662. The decisive weapon

  663. the demons had

  664. against us

  665. was accusation

  666. of our unforgiven sin.

  667. But when Jesus

  668. poured out his blood

  669. in our place

  670. to forgive us

  671. of our sins,

  672. he freed us

  673. from captivity.

  674. He redeemed us

  675. from Satan

  676. and the record

  677. of debt

  678. and legal demands

  679. that stood

  680. against us.

  681. See what's happened there?

  682. Friends,

  683. if you are in Christ,

  684. if you've come to him

  685. in faith and repentance,

  686. Satan comes to you

  687. and says,

  688. You're such a miserable sinner.

  689. How do you think

  690. God could ever love you

  691. or accept you?

  692. And do you know

  693. what you do?

  694. At first,

  695. you start to feel condemned.

  696. You feel guilty.

  697. You feel like,

  698. Yeah,

  699. I'm such a terrible Christian.

  700. How could God

  701. ever love you?

  702. And then suddenly,

  703. you go to CG

  704. or you go to church

  705. and one of your brothers

  706. or sisters

  707. reminds you of the gospel.

  708. They read something

  709. in the scripture

  710. and suddenly you realize,

  711. I've been free.

  712. I've been set free.

  713. And so you say to Satan,

  714. Satan,

  715. shut it.

  716. The debt has been paid.

  717. I have been justified.

  718. I've been redeemed,

  719. ransomed,

  720. healed,

  721. restored,

  722. forgiven.

  723. You preach the gospel

  724. to yourself

  725. and you say,

  726. Jesus is my redeemer.

  727. He has canceled

  728. the record of debt

  729. that stood against me

  730. with its legal demands.

  731. It is finished.

  732. It has been paid

  733. in full.

  734. Friends,

  735. Jesus redeems us

  736. from the penalty

  737. of sin.

  738. Now,

  739. as wonderful

  740. and as powerful

  741. as that is,

  742. in many ways,

  743. that's transaction

  744. that takes place

  745. in the heavens.

  746. But for those of us

  747. that are in Christ,

  748. our record has been settled.

  749. The debt has been paid.

  750. But how does Christ's

  751. redemption work

  752. actually help us today

  753. or tomorrow

  754. or this week?

  755. Well,

  756. that's a great question.

  757. Secondly,

  758. Christ frees us

  759. from the power of sin.

  760. I wonder how many of us

  761. feel like the death

  762. and resurrection of Jesus,

  763. as wonderful as it is

  764. for our past

  765. and as good news

  766. as it is for our future,

  767. has very little bearing

  768. on our lives today.

  769. And yet,

  770. we couldn't possibly

  771. be more wrong.

  772. The New Testament

  773. tells us again and again

  774. that the death of Christ

  775. has ransomed us,

  776. redeemed us,

  777. set us free

  778. on account of His death,

  779. not only from the record

  780. of sin of our past,

  781. but also from the power

  782. of sin in our present,

  783. today.

  784. Look at how

  785. the Apostle Peter says it.

  786. Janice read this

  787. to us earlier.

  788. He says this,

  789. As God's children,

  790. do not be conformed

  791. to the passions

  792. of your former ignorance,

  793. but as He who called you

  794. is holy,

  795. so you also be holy

  796. in all your conduct.

  797. Since it is written,

  798. You shall be holy

  799. for I am holy.

  800. So let's just pause it.

  801. Just think about that.

  802. God is saying that

  803. it's His will

  804. that as Christians,

  805. our lives reflect something

  806. of Jesus' nature

  807. and character.

  808. Just as God is holy,

  809. we ought to be holy.

  810. God doesn't want us

  811. to live

  812. in the way

  813. that we lived

  814. when we were ignorant

  815. about the gospel

  816. and who God is.

  817. He doesn't want us

  818. to live as if

  819. we don't know

  820. who Jesus is,

  821. we don't understand

  822. the gospel,

  823. we don't know

  824. about the holiness

  825. of God.

  826. Friends,

  827. if you're a Christian,

  828. we shouldn't say,

  829. Well,

  830. Jesus died for my sin,

  831. I can just carry on sinning,

  832. it doesn't matter,

  833. it's all forgiven anyway.

  834. God is holy

  835. and He wants our lives

  836. to reflect His holiness.

  837. Just as it is written,

  838. You shall be holy

  839. just as God is holy.

  840. But then He says,

  841. Knowing that,

  842. so there's something

  843. that we should know

  844. or understand,

  845. something we need

  846. to believe

  847. that's going to help us

  848. to live lives

  849. of holiness.

  850. Okay?

  851. Knowing what?

  852. Knowing that you were

  853. ransomed

  854. from the futile ways

  855. inherited from your forefathers,

  856. not with perishable things

  857. such as silver or gold,

  858. but with the precious

  859. blood of Christ.

  860. Friends,

  861. you see what Peter is saying?

  862. Jesus' death on the cross

  863. wasn't just to forgive us,

  864. wasn't just to pay

  865. for the penalty of sin,

  866. as wonderful as that is,

  867. Jesus' death on the cross

  868. also redeems us

  869. from the futile ways

  870. that we live naturally,

  871. that we inherit

  872. from our forefathers,

  873. the futile ways of life

  874. outside of the gospel.

  875. What Christians

  876. in previous generations

  877. called our besetting sins.

  878. Those sins that keep

  879. on plaguing us

  880. and tormenting us

  881. that we struggle

  882. to get free from,

  883. Jesus died to set us

  884. free from that.

  885. Friends,

  886. I wonder what areas

  887. of our lives

  888. don't reflect

  889. the holiness

  890. and the beauty

  891. of Jesus.

  892. Don't reflect

  893. the redeeming,

  894. ransoming power

  895. of Christ.

  896. Friends,

  897. when you look

  898. at your life,

  899. what patterns,

  900. what behavior

  901. keep on tripping you up?

  902. Things you just can't seem

  903. to get the better of.

  904. Friends,

  905. what sinful patterns

  906. of behavior?

  907. What sinful patterns

  908. of thought?

  909. What destructive

  910. coping mechanisms?

  911. What toxic relationships

  912. do you find

  913. you keep going back to?

  914. Friends,

  915. what addictions

  916. do you find yourself

  917. trapped in?

  918. Addictions that you hate

  919. but you just can't seem

  920. to get the better of?

  921. Friends,

  922. what idols

  923. do you find yourself

  924. trusting in again

  925. and again

  926. out of fear

  927. or insecurity?

  928. Christ's death

  929. on the cross

  930. was meant to ransom us,

  931. redeem us,

  932. even out of those

  933. patterns of our life.

  934. In my life,

  935. over the last couple

  936. of years,

  937. I've become aware

  938. of just how

  939. enslaved I am

  940. to people's approval

  941. and affirmation

  942. of me.

  943. I find it

  944. often very difficult

  945. to say no

  946. to people.

  947. I find it very difficult

  948. to disagree,

  949. extremely difficult

  950. to disagree

  951. with anyone

  952. in authority.

  953. Often I find it

  954. difficult to say no

  955. to requests

  956. that are made of me.

  957. Even if I know

  958. it's not a good idea,

  959. I will go along

  960. with it.

  961. I often find

  962. that I hate

  963. making people

  964. feel uncomfortable

  965. or awkward.

  966. I find that

  967. this leads me

  968. from time to time

  969. to being less than honest.

  970. I find myself

  971. talking to someone

  972. and even though

  973. I disagree with

  974. everything that they're saying,

  975. I find myself

  976. nodding my head

  977. and saying,

  978. yeah,

  979. I agree with you.

  980. All out of this fear

  981. of what will people

  982. think of me

  983. if I disagree with them

  984. or what will

  985. out of this fear

  986. of

  987. people not

  988. approving me

  989. or affirming me.

  990. I find that

  991. I get myself

  992. in situations

  993. I don't want to be in

  994. or because I'm afraid

  995. to disagree with people

  996. or say what I really feel.

  997. And as I've thought

  998. about this

  999. over the years,

  1000. one of the things

  1001. I've realized

  1002. is that actually

  1003. in a very deep

  1004. part of my heart,

  1005. I love

  1006. and treasure

  1007. and value

  1008. the approval

  1009. of people

  1010. actually more

  1011. than I value

  1012. and treasure

  1013. God

  1014. and who He is

  1015. and what He has

  1016. to say about me.

  1017. In many ways,

  1018. there's this idol

  1019. that's deeply rooted

  1020. in my heart

  1021. that is the idol

  1022. of I find security

  1023. and comfort

  1024. and peace

  1025. in people affirming me

  1026. and people approving me

1027. even more than I do

  1028. in who God is.

  1029. Now,

  1030. I'm sure I'm not

  1031. the only one

  1032. that feels like this,

1033. but one of the things

  1034. I found fascinating

  1035. is that even though

  1036. I hate it,

  1037. even though

  1038. it has this controlling

  1039. influence of my life,

  1040. every year,

  1041. at New Year's,

  1042. I make a New Year's

  1043. resolution.

  1044. This is the year

1045. I'm going to be courageous.

  1046. This is the year

1047. I'm going to be bold.

  1048. This is the year

1049. I'm not going to give in

  1050. to people pleasing.

  1051. And yet,

  1052. a couple of weeks,

  1053. months down the road,

  1054. I find that I'm

  1055. controlled by this

  1056. and I find myself

  1057. giving in to it.

  1058. And the besetting sin

  1059. of people pleasing

  1060. seems to have this

  1061. hold on me.

  1062. And even though

  1063. I hate it,

  1064. I feel incapable

1065. of breaking free from it.

1066. A couple of months ago,

  1067. I realized this

  1068. and was processing this

  1069. and praying through it

  1070. and I realized that

  1071. I had to confess

  1072. that this controlling

  1073. influence of my life

  1074. is not just because

  1075. of my personality,

  1076. it's not just because

  1077. of my culture,

  1078. it's not just middle

  1079. child syndrome

  1080. or some other

  1081. psychological thing

1082. I want to blame it on.

  1083. Actually,

  1084. deep in my heart,

  1085. in my psychology,

  1086. I guess,

1087. there is an idol there

  1088. that treasures

  1089. and loves

  1090. to prove with people

  1091. more than God.

  1092. There is an idol

  1093. that I've set up

  1094. that I trust

  1095. and hope in

  1096. more than Jesus.

1097. And so over the process

1098. of a couple of weeks,

  1099. I really felt like

  1100. I did deep confession.

  1101. I started to hate

  1102. and despise this idol

1103. and bring it into the light

  1104. and started to do

  1105. deep repentance

  1106. as I brought this

  1107. before God

  1108. and said,

  1109. God,

  1110. I'm so sorry

  1111. that actually

1112. in my heart of hearts,

  1113. I often love people

1114. more than I love you.

  1115. God,

  1116. I'm sorry,

  1117. won't you forgive me?

  1118. And as I did

  1119. the deep soul work

  1120. of confession

  1121. and repentance,

  1122. I started to discover

  1123. the most amazing thing.

  1124. I started to discover

  1125. a freedom

1126. that I had not experienced

  1127. for years

  1128. and years

  1129. and years.

  1130. Now,

  1131. I can't pretend

1132. that I've got it all sorted

1133. and that it never rears its head.

  1134. But friends,

  1135. for the first time

  1136. in years and years,

  1137. I've experienced

  1138. this freedom

  1139. from this deep-seated

  1140. hold

  1141. and idolatry

  1142. in my life.

  1143. Now,

  1144. look again

  1145. at what Peter says.

  1146. He says,

  1147. As children of God,

  1148. do not be conformed

  1149. to the passions

  1150. of your former ignorance,

1151. for He has called you

  1152. to be holy,

  1153. since it's written,

  1154. you shall be holy

  1155. as I am holy,

  1156. knowing this,

  1157. that you were ransomed

  1158. from the futile ways

  1159. inherited

  1160. from your forefathers,

  1161. generations,

  1162. not with perishable things

1163. such as silver or gold,

  1164. but with the precious

  1165. blood of Jesus.

  1166. The Apostle Paul

1167. says it the same way

  1168. when he writes it

  1169. to Titus.

  1170. He says this,

  1171. Our Savior,

  1172. Jesus Christ,

  1173. gave Himself for us

  1174. to redeem us,

  1175. there's our word,

  1176. from the lawlessness

1177. and to purify for Himself

  1178. a people

  1179. for His own possession.

  1180. Galatians tells us

  1181. that Christ redeemed us

1182. from the curse of the law,

  1183. the charge that hangs

  1184. over our head

  1185. that says guilty.

  1186. Paul tells us

  1187. in Titus

  1188. and Peter

1189. that Christ has redeemed us.

  1190. What?

1191. Not just from the charge,

1192. but from the futile ways

  1193. that have a bondage

  1194. over our life,

  1195. that control us.

  1196. Christ has redeemed us

  1197. to set us free

1198. so that we can become

  1199. the people

1200. that He's called us to be.

  1201. We sang it earlier,

1202. What can take away my sin?

1203. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

1204. What can make me whole again?

1205. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  1206. Friends,

1207. the gospel is not just

  1208. that Jesus died

1209. to take away your sin,

  1210. but now you've just

  1211. got to suffer

  1212. and live as if

1213. one day you'll get to heaven

1214. but it has no bearing

  1215. in your life.

  1216. This day,

  1217. this week,

  1218. Christ's power

  1219. of overcoming the grave

  1220. is given to you

  1221. to set you free

  1222. from the besetting,

  1223. controlling,

  1224. addictive,

  1225. powerful sins

  1226. in your life.

  1227. Friends,

  1228. for those of us

  1229. who are in Christ,

  1230. addiction is an

  1231. illegitimate master.

  1232. It's a trapment.

  1233. Scripture says

  1234. it is for freedom

1235. that Christ has set you free.

  1236. Stand firm then

  1237. in your freedom

1238. and do not be enslaved

1239. by a pattern of slavery.

  1240. Friends,

  1241. your freedom

  1242. has been purchased.

1243. The price has been paid

1244. by the power of the Spirit.

  1245. Christ says,

  1246. walk in the freedom

  1247. that He's purchased

  1248. for you.

  1249. Freedom

1250. from the penalty of sin,

  1251. freedom

1252. from the power of sin.

  1253. Thirdly and finally,

  1254. this will be quick,

  1255. freedom

1256. from the presence of sin.

  1257. One day,

1258. Jesus is going to return

  1259. and He's going to

  1260. take us home.

  1261. And when we get

  1262. to be with Him

  1263. in glory,

  1264. there will be

  1265. no more brokenness,

  1266. no more sin,

  1267. no more defection,

  1268. no more anything

  1269. that's wrong

  1270. with our lives,

  1271. our hearts,

  1272. our bodies,

  1273. with our souls.

  1274. We will be completely,

  1275. finally,

  1276. and fully redeemed.

  1277. In Luke chapter 21,

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  1278. Jesus is talking

  1279. to His disciples

  1280. and He's telling them

  1281. about the time

  1282. when He's going to

  1283. return again.

  1284. and He says this,

  1285. when you see

  1286. these signs

  1287. beginning to take place,

  1288. straighten up,

  1289. lift up your head

  1290. because your redemption

  1291. is near.

  1292. Now,

  1293. He's not talking

  1294. about your salvation.

  1295. That happens

  1296. the day you put

  1297. your faith in Christ.

  1298. He's talking

  1299. about this other redemption,

  1300. this full and final

  1301. redemption

1302. that's going to take place

  1303. when Christ returns

  1304. and He takes us

  1305. with Him to glory.

  1306. We sang it earlier,

  1307. there we will rise

  1308. to meet the Lord,

  1309. their sin and death

  1310. will be destroyed.

  1311. This final redemption

  1312. that's coming.

  1313. So Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1314. says like this,

1315. We know that the whole

  1316. of creation

  1317. has been groaning together

1318. in the pains of childbirth

  1319. until now.

  1320. It's talking about how

  1321. our world is broken,

1322. our own bodies are broken,

  1323. we feel the effects

1324. of sin in our life.

  1325. Sorry,

  1326. someone's just trying

  1327. to call me there

  1328. on my iPad.

  1329. Okay,

  1330. Romans 8.

1331. We know that the whole

  1332. creation's been groaning,

  1333. not only creation,

  1334. but we ourselves,

  1335. our own bodies

1336. feel the effect of it.

1337. We who have the first

  1338. fruits of the Spirit,

  1339. we groan inwardly

  1340. as we await eagerly

  1341. our adoption,

  1342. the redemption

  1343. of our bodies.

1344. And so this Christian life

  1345. in many ways,

1346. there are these various stages.

  1347. There's the day

1348. you put your faith in Jesus,

  1349. you become a follower

  1350. of Jesus,

  1351. you are redeemed

1352. from the penalty of sin.

  1353. There's this day

  1354. in the future

  1355. when our bodies

  1356. will be redeemed

  1357. from the defective

  1358. effects of sin

  1359. in this world.

  1360. No more cancer,

  1361. no more anxiety,

  1362. no more depression,

  1363. no more COVID,

  1364. no more hunger,

  1365. no more anger,

  1366. no more worry.

  1367. But then in between

  1368. this Christ's redemption,

  1369. redeeming power

  1370. is at work

  1371. in our lives

  1372. as He starts

  1373. to redeem us

  1374. from even the effects

1375. of sin in our life

  1376. and from the power

  1377. of sin.

  1378. Friends,

  1379. Jesus has come

1380. to do this for us.

  1381. This is the power

  1382. of the gospel.

  1383. Let me close

  1384. with a personal story

  1385. of when I experienced

  1386. the redeeming power

1387. of God in my life.

  1388. It's a story

  1389. I haven't told

  1390. to many people

1391. so if we can just

  1392. keep it between

  1393. the 300 of us

  1394. that would be great.

  1395. I say that jokingly.

  1396. But it's a story

  1397. I haven't shared

  1398. with many people

1399. but I grew up in,

  1400. as I said,

  1401. the most amazing,

  1402. wonderful family.

  1403. The best family

  1404. you could ever

  1405. hope and wish for.

  1406. And I had a very

  1407. happy childhood

  1408. in many ways.

  1409. When I was 17,

  1410. someone who was

  1411. not a family member

  1412. but somebody

1413. that I was very close to,

  1414. there was a breakdown

  1415. in the relationship

  1416. and this person

  1417. said a whole bunch

  1418. of things to me,

  1419. words to me

  1420. that were very hurtful

  1421. and harmful

  1422. and for some reason,

  1423. I'm not sure why,

  1424. but for some reason,

  1425. these words

  1426. lodged deeply

  1427. in my heart

  1428. and they went

  1429. deep inside of me

  1430. and they kind of

  1431. stayed there.

  1432. They're almost like

  1433. the tentacles

  1434. of these words

  1435. put roots

  1436. deep in my heart.

  1437. And for the next

  1438. couple of years,

  1439. I would go through

  1440. these seasons

  1441. where these words

  1442. would just ring

  1443. in my mind

  1444. and I would

  1445. absolutely hate myself.

  1446. I'd go through

  1447. these seasons

  1448. where I just felt

  1449. useless and miserable,

  1450. a pile of nothingness.

1451. And so for the next

  1452. couple of years,

  1453. I would go through

  1454. these seasons

1455. where for two or three

  1456. weeks at a time,

  1457. I would wake up

1458. and the very first thought

1459. I had in the morning,

  1460. before I knew

  1461. what day it was,

  1462. what time it was,

  1463. where I was,

  1464. while I was still

  1465. trying to wake up,

  1466. I'd have this thought

  1467. in my mind,

  1468. I'd hear this voice

1469. that was as clear as day

  1470. and I would say

  1471. these things like,

  1472. Kevin,

  1473. you're such an idiot.

  1474. You're so useless.

  1475. You're such a disgrace.

1476. And I was kind of

  1477. half awake.

  1478. I didn't even know

  1479. what day it was

1480. or what time it was,

  1481. but absolutely

  1482. I knew

  1483. that I was a disgrace.

  1484. I was useless.

1485. And so I'd go through

  1486. a couple of weeks

  1487. of just where

1488. this voice in my mind

  1489. just controlled me.

  1490. And throughout the day,

  1491. I would just feel

  1492. beaten up.

  1493. And then it would

  1494. dissipate

1495. and a couple of months later,

  1496. I'd go through

1497. one of these seasons again.

  1498. And I couldn't

  1499. break free from it.

  1500. And so for four

  1501. or five years,

  1502. this happened.

  1503. And eventually,

  1504. one day,

  1505. I was about 21, 22,

  1506. I was on a mission trip

  1507. in Lesotho.

  1508. Lesotho is a small

  1509. African country

  1510. next to South Africa.

  1511. I was there

1512. with a bunch of friends

1513. and I was in one

  1514. of these funk stages.

  1515. And I remember

  1516. one morning,

  1517. I woke up

  1518. and I didn't even know

  1519. where I was,

1520. but one thing I knew,

  1521. I was an idiot.

  1522. I was a disgrace.

  1523. I was useless.

  1524. And I was convinced

  1525. that nobody and nothing

  1526. could ever love me

  1527. or accept me.

1528. And later on that day,

1529. we were in a church service

  1530. and there's a time

  1531. of sung worship

  1532. and I was just

  1533. feeling miserable

1534. and I heard this voice.

  1535. It wasn't audible,

  1536. but it almost

  1537. could have been audible.

  1538. It was so clear.

  1539. I heard this voice

1540. and the voice was God

  1541. saying to me,

1542. and this is what he said.

  1543. He said,

  1544. Kevin,

1545. my power is in this place.

1546. What do you want me

  1547. to do for you?

  1548. And I remember

1549. I crossed my arms like this

  1550. and I said,

  1551. God,

1552. I want you to set me free

  1553. from hating myself.

  1554. And in an instant,

1555. I felt the love of God

1556. in a way I've never felt it.

1557. I felt the power of God

1558. in a way I've never felt it.

  1559. And friends,

  1560. from that day,

  1561. I have never once

1562. gone through one of those stages again.

1563. Not once in the last 14 years

1564. has that ever come back.

  1565. I was set free.

  1566. I was redeemed

  1567. in a moment

1568. by the power of God

1569. from the effects of sin

  1570. and other people's sin

  1571. in my life.

  1572. Friends,

1573. I tell you that story

  1574. because Jesus Christ

  1575. is our great Redeemer.

1576. He's gone to the cross.

1577. He laid down His life.

  1578. He redeemed us

1579. from the penalty of sin.

  1580. That's true.

1581. But He also has come

  1582. to redeem us

1583. from the power of sin.

  1584. The power of sin

  1585. in our own life,

  1586. but also the power

  1587. that other people's sin

  1588. have over us.

  1589. Friends,

1590. one day Jesus will redeem us

1591. from the very presence of sin.

  1592. Friends,

1593. this week I've been praying for us.

1594. I've been praying for many of us

  1595. by name.

  1596. I've been praying

1597. and I really do believe

1598. that God wants to set

1599. some of us free today.

  1600. For some of us,

1601. it's from the power of sin

  1602. in our own lives.

1603. It's addictions that hold us

1604. and we just can't feel

1605. that we can ever get free from it.

  1606. Friends,

1607. the Bible says that actually

1608. the way to be free

1609. and the way to start

  1610. the redemption process

  1611. is actually through confession

  1612. and repentance.

  1613. Without confession and repentance,

  1614. there is no freedom.

1615. And so even the smallest step

  1616. requires us just to

  1617. confess and acknowledge,

  1618. God, I need you.

  1619. I'm so sorry.

  1620. In my own life,

1621. the idolatry of people pleasing it,

1622. God has broken the power of that

1623. as I've taken the small step

1624. of confessing and repenting that.

  1625. Friends,

1626. I wonder how many of us

  1627. this morning

  1628. need to be free

  1629. from destructive patterns

1630. of sin in our own life,

  1631. destructive patterns

  1632. of behavior.

  1633. Friends,

1634. will you come to Jesus

  1635. this morning

  1636. in confession and repentance?

1637. Will you come and acknowledge

  1638. there's this idol

  1639. that out of fear

  1640. or insecurity

1641. you just hold on to?

  1642. Confess it.

1643. Christ wants to set you free.

  1644. Friends,

  1645. for some of us,

1646. we need to be set free

  1647. from bitterness

  1648. and resentment

  1649. and forgiveness.

  1650. For some of us,

  1651. it's anger

  1652. in our hearts.

1653. It has this controlling power

  1654. over us

1655. that we just can't get free

  1656. and we excuse it

  1657. and justify it.

1658. We use all these arguments

  1659. why we justified.

  1660. Friends,

  1661. it's idolatry.

  1662. It's sin.

1663. Jesus wants to set us free

  1664. from it today.

  1665. Friends,

  1666. for some of us,

  1667. it's sexual addiction,

  1668. pornography.

  1669. Friends,

  1670. for some of us,

  1671. it's people pleasing.

  1672. Some of us,

  1673. maybe it's other addictions

  1674. like comfort eating,

  1675. spending money uncontrollably.

  1676. It's greed.

  1677. It's these other things

  1678. that hold us

1679. and we can't be free from it.

  1680. Friends,

1681. will you come to Jesus

  1682. your great redeemer?

1683. He wants to set you free.

  1684. Friends,

  1685. for some of us,

  1686. it's not so much

1687. the sins of our life.

  1688. It's those that have

  1689. sinned against us.

  1690. It's hurts and wounds

  1691. of the past.

  1692. It's words that people

  1693. have said over us.

  1694. Friends,

  1695. Christ,

  1696. the great redeemer,

  1697. wants to come

  1698. and set us free.

  1699. Friends,

  1700. for some of us,

  1701. it's the words

  1702. of our parents.

1703. It's the lack of love

  1704. that they showed us.

  1705. It's the affirmation

  1706. we long for

  1707. and we never get.

  1708. Friends,

  1709. Christ,

  1710. your redeemer,

1711. who went to the cross

1712. not only to pay for your sin

1713. but to break the power

1714. of sin over your life.

  1715. Jesus died

  1716. to set you free.

  1717. Can I ask you

  1718. to stand with me

  1719. if you're comfortable?

  1720. Maybe if you don't

  1721. want to stand,

1722. you might want to get

  1723. on your knees.

1724. Maybe you want to lift

  1725. up your hands

  1726. and

  1727. will you join me

  1728. as we pray together?

1729. I'd love to pray for us

  1730. that Christ,

  1731. our great redeemer,

  1732. will set us free.

  1733. Let's pray together.

  1734. Lord Jesus Christ,

  1735. awesome and magnificent God,

1736. the sovereign God of the heavens,

  1737. you who are seated

  1738. on the throne,

1739. you rule and you reign,

  1740. but God,

1741. you are not just transcendent

  1742. and distant,

  1743. you are intensely

  1744. near and imminent,

  1745. you are personal

  1746. and close.

  1747. God,

  1748. I pray for us

  1749. this morning,

  1750. I pray for myself,

1751. I pray for my brothers

1752. and sisters across Hong Kong.

  1753. God,

  1754. for those of us

  1755. that are in Christ,

1756. I pray that you will come

  1757. and set us free.

  1758. God,

  1759. I pray

1760. that you set us free

  1761. from

  1762. patterns of sin.

  1763. God,

1764. from idols in our life

  1765. that have controlled us

  1766. for too long.

  1767. God,

  1768. from the accusations

  1769. and the lies

  1770. of the devil,

  1771. where Satan has come

  1772. and told us

1773. that we will never be free,

1774. it's just who we are.

  1775. God,

1776. where Satan has told us

1777. that you will never love us

  1778. and accept us,

  1779. that we're just mediocre.

  1780. Christ,

1781. I pray that the power

  1782. of the Spirit

1783. will break into our lives

1784. and set people free now.

  1785. God,

  1786. come and do that,

  1787. I pray.

  1788. Set people free,

  1789. God.

  1790. God,

1791. I pray for those of us

  1792. that feel enslaved

  1793. and trapped to anger.

  1794. Christ,

  1795. set us free

  1796. as we confess that

  1797. and repent it.

  1798. God,

  1799. where there's addiction

  1800. to sexual sin

  1801. and pornography,

  1802. Christ,

  1803. set us free

  1804. as we confess that

  1805. and admit the reality

  1806. of that.

  1807. Jesus set us free.

  1808. Christ,

  1809. for those of us

  1810. that feel trapped,

  1811. enslaved,

  1812. by the sins

  1813. that have been

  1814. sinned against us,

  1815. words spoken of us,

  1816. beatings,

  1817. physical abuse,

  1818. emotional abuse,

  1819. psychological abuse,

  1820. Christ,

  1821. I pray

  1822. by the power

  1823. of the risen God,

  1824. that Jesus,

  1825. you who died

  1826. and rose again

  1827. to conquer

  1828. the power of Satan,

  1829. God,

1830. once you set your people free,

  1831. Jesus,

1832. come and have your way.

  1833. God,

1834. just as you set me free

  1835. all those years ago,

  1836. I pray that you'll do that

1837. for my brothers and sisters

  1838. today.

  1839. God,

  1840. I pray tomorrow morning

  1841. we'll wake up

1842. with a new sense of life

  1843. and freedom

  1844. and joy

  1845. and power in God

  1846. because we've experienced

  1847. the living God.

  1848. Oh God,

  1849. we need you.

  1850. God,

  1851. we stand secure

  1852. in our justification

  1853. and the fact

  1854. that the penalty

  1855. has been paid.

1856. We are free from it.

  1857. We stand secure.

  1858. God,

  1859. now we pray,

1860. come and make us free

1861. that the power of sin,

  1862. the power of Satan,

  1863. will have no

  1864. hold effect

  1865. in our lives.

  1866. We experience

  1867. what it means

  1868. to be

1869. sons and daughters of you.

  1870. You pray this,

  1871. God,

  1872. in your powerful name.

  1873. Friends,

  1874. as we continue

  1875. to worship

  1876. and sing songs

  1877. of adoration,

  1878. I urge you,

  1879. take whatever posture

  1880. you want.

  1881. You can stand,

  1882. you can jump,

  1883. jump.

  1884. If you need to

  1885. shout it out,

1886. if you need to say something,

1887. if you need to just

1888. lie flat on the floor,

  1889. do whatever you want.

  1890. But friends,

  1891. come to Christ,

  1892. your great Redeemer.

1893. He died to set you free.

  1894. He's given you

  1895. the spirit

  1896. to set you free.

  1897. Galatians 5 says,

  1898. it is for freedom

  1899. that Christ

  1900. has set us free.

  1901. Stand firm then

1902. and do not allow yourself

  1903. to be yoked again

1904. by a spirit of bondage.

  1905. Friends,

  1906. Jesus,

1907. come to set us free.

  1908. Amen.

  1909. Amen.

  1910. Amen.

  1911. Amen.

  1912. Amen.

  1913. Amen.
