  1. Now we turn to the preaching of God's Word.

  2. We're going to be looking at a passage from 2 Timothy 2, verses 1-7 this evening.

    2 Timothy 2:1–7

  3. As you turn there, there is a new obsession in the Knowlton household.

  4. It is the Rubik's Cube.

  5. I know this toy has been around for 30 plus years now, but it's as if it was just invented.

  6. Based on the amount of time my kids are playing it.

  7. Okay, my oldest in particular has developed a profound addiction to the extent that she is told not to bring it to the dinner table or go to bed with it at night.

  8. But after a few weeks of playing with it on her own, realized this was a little too tricky.

  9. So, of course, turning to YouTube where you can find the solution to anything, she found some helpful hints on how to solve the Rubik's Cube and has since become a master at doing so.

  10. And so now the task is to see how quickly you can solve the Rubik's Cube.

  11. But not that alone.

  12. What's been interesting to watch is her desire to teach everyone else in the house how to solve the Rubik's Cube.

  13. She has sat me down on multiple occasions in order to try to teach me this methodology.

  14. Unfortunately, I have yet to be successful, but her persistence is admirable.

  15. Not only does she want to enjoy this herself, she wants to pass it on.

  16. And so that's what we're going to be talking about tonight, this idea of discipleship.

  17. We've been talking the last several weeks as we've been going through this series about habits of a healthy church.

  18. And so tonight we conclude this series looking at discipleship.

  19. Not only being disciples, but also making disciples.

  20. And so we all likely know the story in the Bible of Jesus and his 12 disciples that he had.

  21. Jesus, these 12 served as Jesus' inner circle.

  22. They went with him and did ministry with him.

  23. They spent time with him both publicly and privately.

  24. They learned from him and were loved by him.

  25. But the tension that they received from Jesus, of course, was not meant to be exclusive.

  26. We know that after Jesus' resurrection and prior to his ascension, he gives his disciples a command.

  27. He gives them the great commission.

  28. Of course, we know.

  29. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

  30. teaching them to observe all I have commanded you.

  31. And behold, I am with you always, even until the end of the age.

  32. And so in the same way that these disciples were fed and were taught by Jesus,

  33. now they were commanded to do likewise to those around them.

  34. They were called not only to be disciples, but to make disciples.

  35. And so that command that was followed by the New Testament church,

  36. and that is certainly a command that we follow as well today.

  37. And so that's what we're going to consider.

  38. How are we called to be disciples, and how are we also called to be disciple makers?

  39. And we see this in our text this evening, 2 Timothy 2, verses 1 through 7.

    2 Timothy 2:1–7

  40. And I'll be reading from the ESV.

  41. You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,

  42. in which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses,

  43. and trust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

  44. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

  45. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits,

  46. since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.

  47. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

  48. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.

  49. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

  50. This is the word of the Lord. Pray with me.

  51. Lord, I thank you for the privilege to be able to preach your word this evening.

  52. Lord, I ask that you empower me through your spirit,

  53. that I may speak with warmth and clarity.

  54. God, we desire to receive your divine truth this evening.

  55. And so may we both be convicted and comforted by your word.

  56. Through our time together, may we be edified and you be glorified, we pray in Jesus' name.

  57. Amen.

  58. Now, if you're not familiar with this passage or even the book of 2 Timothy,

  59. this was a letter written by Paul to Timothy,

  60. a young man who was one of Paul's disciples who was serving in Ephesus at the time.

  61. Now, this was actually Paul's last letter that's included in the Bible.

  62. So it's somewhat of a farewell address.

  63. And we see that play out in this passage.

  64. You see, Paul at the time was imprisoned in Rome.

  65. He knew that his death was imminent.

  66. His days of ministry were numbered.

  67. But not only that, the church in Ephesus was struggling at the time.

  68. Many were starting to drift from the gospel.

  69. This was a place that had previously been really the epicenter for the spread of the gospel.

  70. Gospel expansion was occurring, and now it's at risk of dying out.

  71. And so Paul is rightly concerned for the protection and the promotion of the gospel.

  72. So he wants to give Timothy some final instructions in what was his last letter.

  73. And so we see three commands that are given by Paul to Timothy,

  74. and these commands are going to serve as points for my sermon this evening.

  75. And they are this, to be strengthened, to entrust, and to suffer.

  76. One, be strengthened.

  77. Two, entrust.

  78. Three, suffer.

  79. So we're going to take those one at a time.

  80. First, we're going to read verse one again.

  81. You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

  82. Now, it probably would have been an easier mnemonic just to say, to be strong,

  83. rather than to be strengthened.

  84. In fact, if you have the ESV, that's how this verb is translated, to be strong.

  85. However, the ESV, which I wanted to use tonight, is actually a more accurate translation

  86. because it says, be strengthened.

  87. This verb in the Greek uses the passive voice.

  88. And so if we put on our grammar school caps,

  89. and remember the difference between active and passive.

  90. Active verb is when the subject of the verb is the one doing the action.

  91. In a passive verb, the action is being done upon the subject of the verb.

  92. So Paul isn't saying here, you be strong, or you strengthen yourself.

  93. He's saying, be strengthened.

  94. Receive strength from outside yourself.

  95. And so I think this is vitally important as we take a look at this passage,

  96. this active command to be strong.

  97. This is the mentality that we normally see in society around us, right?

  98. To work hard, to be the best version of you.

  99. To study hard so you can get good grades, so you can get a good job.

  100. To work hard at your job so you can get a promotion.

  101. To be emotionally stable so you can avoid depression or anxiety.

  102. To make more money so you can have greater security in life.

  103. It's all about self-empowerment and self-improvement.

  104. And unfortunately, we see this notion creep into the church as well.

  105. But this isn't what Paul is saying to Timothy.

  106. He's not saying, Jesus saved you, so you need to be strong and prove yourself to God.

  107. He's not saying, Jesus died on the cross, so now you need to work in order to maintain your salvation.

  108. No, he's not saying, be strong.

  109. He's saying, be strengthened.

  110. And so we look to see, what are we supposed to be strengthened by?

  111. Very clearly, by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

  112. We are strengthened by grace.

  113. And so if you've been around the church long enough, you probably have a definition in your mind of what grace is.

  114. Grace is favor in the absence of merit.

  115. Or perhaps even better, grace is favor in the presence of demerit.

  116. And while these are absolutely true, we are saved by God's grace, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  117. This passage shows us something even more about grace.

  118. That grace is not simply just a disposition that we as believers have.

  119. It's not just a gift that we received sometime in the past at the point of conversion.

  120. We see here that grace is an ongoing means of empowerment.

  121. And we see Paul really talks about this often.

  122. I want to look at just a couple other passages where Paul talks about this grace that we have in our lives.

  123. First, 2 Corinthians 9, verse 8 says this.

    2 Corinthians 9:8

  124. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

  125. Here's another verse, 1 Corinthians 15, 10.

  126. But by the grace of God, I am what I am.

  127. And his grace towards me was not in vain.

  128. On the contrary, I work harder than any of them.

  129. Though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.

  130. So Paul is very clear.

  131. God's grace should abound in us.

  132. God's grace empowers us.

  133. God's grace enables us to live and follow after him.

  134. And so if you're like me, I'm a big fan of podcasts.

  135. Rather, when I walk around town or I ride a bike, I usually listen to a podcast rather than music.

  136. And if you know how podcasts work, though you can download a single episode of something,

  137. usually if there's a podcast you like, you just click the subscribe button.

  138. And so when podcasts, new ones are released, it goes automatically to your phone for you to listen to.

  139. Unfortunately for me, because of the fact that I subscribe to so many podcasts,

  140. I never have the time to listen to them all.

  141. So they start building up and building up and building up until I have to delete them

  142. because I've taken up all the space on my phone.

  143. And so grace functions in a similar way.

  144. Much like a subscription, we keep receiving more and more of this grace.

  145. It's not a one-time gift.

  146. It's a continuous, overwhelming stream.

  147. And so that's why this verb, to be strengthened, is in the present tense.

  148. It's not that we are strengthened just at the point of conversion.

  149. It's not that we're strengthened every once in a while.

  150. It's that we are strengthened continually, daily strengthened by the grace of God.

  151. And so grace is the means of strength.

  152. What is the source of strength in this passage?

  153. It tells us, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

  154. The source of our strength is Christ.

  155. And so what does that mean to be in Christ?

  156. Just like grace, if you've been around the church, it's kind of common Christian jargon, right?

  157. To talk about living in Christ.

  158. This is one of Paul's favorite phrases that he uses over and over again in his letters.

  159. And it's actually, if we go back to the chapter preceding our passage in 2 Timothy chapter 1,

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  160. we get a great explanation from Paul as to what it looks like to live in Christ.

  161. So 2 Timothy chapter 1 verses 8 through 10 says this.

    2 Timothy 1:8–10

  162. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner,

  163. but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,

  164. who saved us and called us to a holy calling,

  165. not because of our works, but because of his own purpose and grace,

  166. which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

  167. and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus,

  168. who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

  169. And so to be in Christ means to be in union and communion with him,

  170. which is brought about by the all-encompassing work of God.

  171. Look at the work of God that's done, that is mentioned in this passage.

  172. First, he saved us.

  173. He called us.

  174. He gave us his purpose and his grace in Christ.

  175. When did he do this?

  176. Before the ages began.

  177. This grace was ours from the beginning of time,

  178. and now it's fully revealed through the incarnation of Christ,

  179. who died and rose from the dead,

  180. defeating death, bringing us life and light to all his people.

  181. And so to be strengthened by grace means to be fully reliant on the complete and ongoing work of Christ.

  182. To be in Christ means that we are brought in relationship with him in such a way

  183. that what is true of Christ becomes true of us.

  184. His grace and his power becomes our experience and our possession.

  185. And so this is really the essence of being a disciple,

  186. that we are to abide in Christ,

  187. that we totally rely on the work of Christ who saved us and sustained us

  188. and equipped us and enabled us to live for him.

  189. And so this is really key.

  190. I don't want to breeze by this because this is really when we talk about discipleship,

  191. we can also often forget about this first part,

  192. what is most important in being a disciple.

  193. It's a good thing to talk about discipleship,

  194. about sharing the gospel and teaching and training others.

  195. But we must first remember that it is,

  196. we are called to be rooted in Christ,

  197. to hunger after him,

  198. to cling to him.

  199. All our efforts to make disciples will be in vain.

  200. There will be nothing more than religious charade

  201. if we are not first grounded in Christ.

  202. And so that's the first command,

  203. to be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ.

  204. And so why do we need to be strengthened?

  205. Paul tells us in his second command,

  206. which is to entrust.

  207. Look at verse 2.

  208. And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses,

  209. entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

  210. And so Paul reminds us that we are strengthened by the grace of Christ

  211. in order that we can share this grace with others.

  212. I mentioned at the beginning that the church in Ephesus was struggling.

  213. Though it had been a place where missionaries had been sent

  214. and sent out to see the spread of the gospel,

  215. now people were leaving the church.

  216. Many were leaving the faith.

  217. And so Paul not only wanted to see the gospel preserved in this generation,

  218. he wanted to see it passed on to future generations as well.

  219. It's a desire that we see repeated throughout the Bible.

  220. The Old Testament text that we looked at from Deuteronomy 6.

  221. It's Moses giving God's command to his people.

  222. And what does he say?

  223. He says to follow these commands,

  224. that you may do them,

  225. that you may fear the Lord your God,

  226. you and your sons and your sons' sons,

  227. by keeping all these commands and statutes,

  228. which I command you all the days of your life.

  229. They wanted to see God's commands and his statutes,

  230. the people of Israel continue to follow after God.

  231. And so what does Paul here in this passage want to see passed on?

  232. He says,

  233. He's basically saying the whole gospel.

  234. All that I have spent my life teaching you about who Jesus is and what he has done.

  235. This isn't a secret.

  236. This isn't a private revelation that Paul is conveying to Timothy.

  237. No, this is the entire, the whole counsel of God,

  238. which he has preached since his time of conversion.

  239. A great phrase that I see Paul repeat,

  240. both in 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy here.

  241. He says it in the preceding chapter.

  242. He talks about this message being the good deposit.

  243. And it's this good deposit that was entrusted to him.

  244. It's this good deposit that he's entrusted to Timothy

  245. and wants to see entrusted to others as well.

  246. And so when I was in law school,

  247. I had to take a class called Wills, Trusts, and Estates.

  248. It was not one of my favorite classes.

  249. I really don't remember much about it.

  250. I couldn't even tell you who taught the class.

  251. But there's one thing that I remember from the class

  252. is that a trustee,

  253. his primary responsibility and his duty

  254. is to the beneficiary of an estate.

  255. So the trustee is someone who is named within the trust,

  256. who is responsible for something that is not his,

  257. whether it's money or land,

  258. some sort of possession,

  259. some sort of asset,

  260. and he's controlling it for the benefit

  261. of the person named in the trust,

  262. the beneficiary.

  263. And so we've probably heard stories

  264. about trustees mismanaging money

  265. or not doing what they're supposed to do,

  266. this legal responsibility that they have to the beneficiary.

  267. This is really what Paul is talking about here,

  268. this image of a trustee.

  269. Paul is a trustee of God's invaluable treasure,

  270. this good deposit,

  271. and it's not meant for him alone.

  272. That's what he's trying to tell Timothy here.

  273. It's not his to hoard.

  274. It's not his to keep.

  275. As a trustee,

  276. it was his duty to protect it

  277. and to share it with others

  278. because it's those who hear the gospel.

  279. They are the ones that are the beneficiaries,

  280. you and me.

  281. And as we share it with others,

  282. there will be others that reap the benefit forever.

  283. And so we see this progression

  284. that occurs in these couple chapters

  285. of Paul sharing the gospel,

  286. and we see this gospel replicated

  287. and shared and shared generation upon generation.

  288. Looking back at chapter 1, verse 12,

  289. Jesus entrusted this gospel to Paul.

  290. Paul then, in verse 14,

  291. entrusts it to Timothy.

  292. Looking at verse 2,

  293. Paul instructs Timothy to entrust it to faithful men

  294. who will then entrust it to others.

  295. We see this replication

  296. and this multiplication going on of the gospel.

  297. And so have you ever thought yourself

  298. about your own gospel lineage,

  299. your own gospel family tree, if you will?

  300. Who was it that invested in you

  301. who shared the gospel with you,

  302. who discipled you in the faith?

  303. Do you ever think,

  304. who was the person who invested in that person?

  305. And who is the person who invested in that person?

  306. And then thinking back about yourself.

  307. Who are you going to invest in?

  308. Who are you going to give this good deposit to?

  309. Because this message doesn't stop with us.

  310. We are trustees of the gospel.

  311. There are more and more beneficiaries to be had.

  312. And so now,

  313. not only does Paul talk about

  314. this duty of discipleship

  315. as intended for

  316. those in leadership.

  317. Let's look.

  318. You may think that,

  319. as he says,

  320. this gospel is to be entrusted

  321. to faithful men who can teach.

  322. And so as we look at that,

  323. and if you know these pastoral epistles,

  324. 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus,

  325. you may think,

  326. well,

  327. does that really mean me?

  328. Because I'm not an elder.

  329. I'm not a leader within the church.

  330. So maybe I'm off the hook.

  331. But that's not what Paul is saying here.

  332. Because if we look further

  333. into these pastoral epistles,

  334. if we turn to Titus 2,

  335. Paul's writing about the duty of discipleship

  336. that's intended for everyone within the church.

  337. And he speaks specifically

  338. to different people within the church,

  339. different groups of people.

  340. To old men, he says,

  341. to teach what accords with sound doctrine.

  342. To women, he says,

  343. to teach what is good

  344. and train younger women.

  345. To young men,

  346. to be a model of good works.

  347. In your teaching,

  348. show integrity and dignity.

  349. To bond servants,

  350. show all good faith

  351. so that in everything

  352. you may adorn

  353. the doctrine of God our Savior.

  354. So it's our duty as disciples

  355. to entrust this good deposit to others

  356. that we may see the spread of the gospel.

  357. And so this brings us then

  358. to Paul's third command,

  359. to suffer.

  360. Why do we need to be strengthened

  361. by the grace that is in Christ Jesus

  362. to entrust this message to others?

  363. Because it's hard work.

  364. Because we should expect to suffer in it.

  365. Paul, in these last verses,

  366. he gives three metaphors

  367. for how we should suffer.

  368. He looks at a soldier

  369. and an athlete

  370. and a farmer.

  371. And I want to look at

  372. each one of these specifically

  373. because they really highlight

  374. a specific discipline

  375. that we need to have

  376. as believers

  377. and as disciples.

  378. So let's consider the soldier first.

  379. Verse three.

  380. Share in the suffering

  381. as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

  382. No soldier gets entangled

  383. in civilian pursuits

  384. since his aim

  385. is to please the one

  386. who enlisted him.

  387. I recently watched a documentary

  388. about something called

  389. Reception Day

  390. that took place

  391. at Westminster Military Academy

  392. or not Westminster,

  393. West Point Military Academy

  394. in the U.S.

  395. And this is when the new cadets

  396. were brought into the academy,

  397. their very first day.

  398. And it walked along with them

  399. in what they had to do.

  400. And it showed them

  401. they arrive

  402. and they go to this

  403. brief orientation

  404. and then they're given

  405. 60 seconds

  406. to say goodbye

  407. to their loved ones.

  408. From there,

  409. they're given a bag

  410. where they put in,

  411. they're told to put in

  412. only certain possessions

  413. that they'll have

  414. for the next several weeks

  415. during basic training.

  416. And then they're marched

  417. to the barbershop

  418. where they all get

  419. their heads shaved.

  420. They're put in companies.

  421. They are taught how to march

  422. and how to follow orders.

  423. And the day concludes

  424. with an oath ceremony

  425. that formally initiates

  426. the new class

  427. into West Point.

  428. And so what's the purpose

  429. of a reception day like this?

  430. What's the purpose

  431. of a basic training

  432. that these soldiers go through?

  433. I think it's really

  434. to instill

  435. single-mindedness

  436. in these soldiers.

  437. It's the,

  438. it's the soldiers' duty

  439. to support

  440. and to defend

  441. enemies

  442. both foreign

  443. and domestic.

  444. And so in order to do so,

  445. they can't be distracted

  446. by civilian pursuits.

  447. So things like family

  448. and comforts

  449. and possessions,

  450. these things are put aside

  451. in order that they may

  452. fulfill their duty

  453. to serve well.

  454. And so Paul is saying

  455. this is the mindset

  456. that we must have

  457. as disciples,

  458. that we must be

  459. single-minded.

  460. Our goal as disciples

  461. is to make disciples.

  462. And so we need to think,

  463. what's,

  464. what's preventing us

  465. from doing that?

  466. How are we to demonstrate

  467. single-mindedness

  468. in our Christian life?

  469. Do we need to change

  470. the way that we spend

  471. our time

  472. or our money?

  473. Are we more focused

  474. on protecting our comforts

  475. than pursuing

  476. kingdom-building activities?

  477. Just like a soldier

  478. is supposed to be

  479. distinct from a civilian,

  480. our lives also

  481. are supposed to look

  482. different than the lives

  483. of those around us

  484. who do not know Christ.

  485. And so secondly then,

  486. the athlete,

  487. verse 5,

  488. an athlete is not crowned

  489. unless he competes

  490. according to the rules.

  491. And so just like

  492. a soldier

  493. is to be single-minded,

  494. the athlete is supposed

  495. to be self-disciplined

  496. in how they race

  497. and how they train.

  498. Maybe one of the most

  499. famous stories

  500. of a cheater

  501. in a marathon

  502. is a woman

  503. named Rosie Ruiz

  504. in the 1980

  505. Boston Marathon.

  506. This is a woman

  507. who came across

  508. the finish line

  509. in a blazing

  510. two hours and 31 minutes.

  511. This set an American

  512. record at the time.

  513. And though there was

  514. some suspicion

  515. as to whether she

  516. really ran the race,

  517. back in 1980,

  518. there weren't

  519. any sort of microchips

  520. that athletes wore.

  521. There were no cameras

  522. at every corner.

  523. So it really,

  524. it took over a week

  525. to determine

  526. that she was actually

  527. not the winner,

  528. that she had cheated.

  529. There were some witnesses

  530. that came forward

  531. that said that she came

  532. out of the crowd

  533. at mile 25,

  534. so she ran one mile

  535. in order to win

  536. the Boston Marathon.

  537. But Paul here

  538. is not only talking

  539. about competing

  540. according to the rules

  541. when we actually race,

  542. but also as we train.

  543. You see,

  544. in his time,

  545. there would have been

  546. Greek rule.

  547. The Olympics would have

  548. taken place.

  549. There were actually

  550. professional athletes

  551. that would have trained

  552. for these competitions.

  553. And they had to follow

  554. a rule to prepare

  555. for 10 months

  556. before their competition.

  557. They had to take

  558. an oath to Zeus

  559. that their preparation

  560. would be done properly.

  561. And so,

  562. we may know that

  563. the Edinburgh Marathon

  564. is next weekend, right?

  565. If any of us

  566. got up tomorrow

  567. and decided,

  568. huh, you know what?

  569. I may start training

  570. and run that thing

  571. next week.

  572. We'd all recognize

  573. that person

  574. as being a fool, right?

  575. Whether you run or not,

  576. we all know that

  577. training for a marathon

  578. takes time.

  579. You have a running schedule.

  580. You do tempo work.

  581. You do long distance runs.

  582. You have to change

  583. your diet.

  584. And so,

  585. for us as believers,

  586. we know that

  587. when we see this command

  588. to be self-disciplined

  589. and to be obedient,

  590. there's nothing

  591. that we can do

  592. to earn God's favor

  593. by keeping these rules,

  594. but we do follow

  595. Christ's example

  596. as a guide

  597. for our conduct.

  598. And so,

  599. we have to ask,

  600. are we self-disciplined

  601. as God's disciples?

  602. Are we spending time

  603. in the Word?

  604. Are we being faithful

  605. in prayer?

  606. Are we earnest

  607. in worship?

  608. Because there's no shortcuts

  609. to cultivating

  610. a relationship with God

  611. like we just talked about.

  612. In order to be

  613. a disciple-maker,

  614. we must first

  615. abide in Christ.

  616. We also see

  617. there's no shortcuts

  618. in disciple-making either.

  619. Think of all the time

  620. and energy churches

  621. and ministries

  622. have spent

  623. in trying to figure out

  624. ways to quickly

  625. and easily

  626. evangelize lost.

  627. You know,

  628. here's a track.

  629. Join this program.

  630. Come to this Bible study.

  631. And not say that

  632. those things are bad.

  633. Those can be

  634. very effective tools

  635. in sharing the gospel.

  636. But they should not

  637. be seen as

  638. in isolation.

  639. They cannot be done

  640. or replace

  641. the need for

  642. participation

  643. on our part.

  644. Real,

  645. effective discipleship

  646. is going to be

  647. personal.

  648. And so,

  649. we think about

  650. wanting to teach

  651. someone from the Bible

  652. or instruct them

  653. how to read the Bible.

  654. What's the best way

  655. to do that?

  656. is to read the Bible

  657. with them.

  658. You want to teach

  659. someone how to pray?

  660. Pray with them.

  661. Invite them into

  662. your own prayer life.

  663. You want to teach

  664. someone how to be

  665. a good husband

  666. or wife

  667. or father?

  668. Invite them into

  669. your own home

  670. where you can model

  671. that for them.

  672. Are we self-disciplined

  673. enough

  674. in order to do this?

  675. That we may set

  676. aside time?

  677. That we may

  678. prioritize relationships?

  679. That we may desire

  680. to invest

  681. in the next generation

  682. in such a way?

  683. Lastly,

  684. Paul describes

  685. a hard-working farmer.

  686. In verse 6,

  687. he says this,

  688. It is the hard-working

  689. farmer

  690. who ought to have

  691. the first share

  692. of crops.

  693. Now,

  694. I don't know

  695. if any of you

  696. have a vegetable garden.

  697. I've never really

  698. attempted a full-blown garden.

  699. I've attempted

  700. an herb garden once

  701. or a herb garden,

  702. as you say here,

  703. and was only

  704. mildly successful.

  705. There's a lot of effort

  706. you put into

  707. planting the plants

  708. and watering them

  709. and protecting them

  710. from insects

  711. and the cold

  712. and the heat.

  713. And you realize

  714. at the end of the day

  715. what you have

  716. profited in produce

  717. you could have bought

  718. at the supermarket

  719. for a couple quid.

  720. And so,

  721. this is only talking

  722. about a square meter

  723. of land

  724. in your back garden,

  725. much less

  726. a whole farm.

  727. My family and I,

  728. we went down

  729. to the Yorkshire Nails

  730. just last weekend.

  731. And it's easy

  732. to glamorize

  733. farm life, right?

  734. You see these sheep

  735. and these cows

  736. out in the fields,

  737. you see rows of crops

  738. growing,

  739. you think,

  740. ah, that would be

  741. kind of fun for a while

  742. to live as a farmer.

  743. And then you realize

  744. all the effort

  745. that's needed

  746. in order to be a farmer.

  747. The truth is

  748. that the farmer

  749. is not hardworking,

  750. he's not going to be

  751. a farmer for very long.

  752. And so, likewise,

  753. we are called

  754. to hard work

  755. for the sake

  756. of the gospel.

  757. Spiritual work

  758. is going to involve

  759. exertion.

  760. And so,

  761. Paul says this

  762. if we look at Galatians

    Galatians 6:7–9

  763. chapter 6,

  764. verses 7 through 9,

  765. Paul says this,

  766. Do not be deceived.

  767. God is not mocked.

  768. For whatever one sows,

  769. that he will also reap.

  770. For the one who sows

  771. to his own flesh

  772. will from the flesh

  773. reap corruption.

  774. But the one who sows

  775. to the Spirit

  776. will from the Spirit

  777. reap eternal life.

  778. And let us not grow weary

  779. of doing good.

  780. For in due season

  781. we will reap

  782. if we do not give up.

  783. So, pursuing holiness,

  784. sharing the gospel,

  785. making disciples,

  786. we recognize

  787. that this is hard work.

  788. And so, all these metaphors

  789. of the athlete

  790. and the soldier

  791. and the farmer,

  792. they illustrate

  793. this whole hardness

  794. that's needed

  795. by all believers

  796. to be focused

  797. and self-disciplined

  798. and to be hardworking.

  799. These are traits

  800. that if we don't possess them

  801. we shouldn't expect

  802. to see results.

  803. But we recognize again

  804. that this is why

  805. Christ has strengthened us

  806. with his grace.

  807. It's not only

  808. by his grace

  809. that we have the ability

  810. to serve and to suffer.

  811. It is by his grace

  812. that we can see results

  813. that we may reap reward.

  814. Each one of these metaphors,

  815. the soldier,

  816. the athlete,

  817. the farmer,

  818. we see a specific reward

  819. that they receive.

  820. The soldier,

  821. it is to please his commander.

  822. The athlete is to receive

  823. the crown.

  824. The farmer is to have

  825. the first share of the crops.

  826. And it's all grace.

  827. We can't take credit for it.

  828. We don't deserve it.

  829. Christ is the one

  830. who strengthened us

  831. to suffer by his grace

  832. and it is by his grace

  833. that we are blessed

  834. with results.

  835. And so we could really

  836. stop there

  837. and walk away

  838. with a charge

  839. to be disciples

  840. and make disciples.

  841. But Paul gives us

  842. one last instruction

  843. in the passage

  844. in verse 7.

  845. He says this,

  846. to think over

  847. what I say

  848. for the Lord

  849. will give you

  850. understanding

  851. in everything.

  852. One of the commentators

  853. I read that,

  854. he said that a modern

  855. translation of this text

  856. would simply be

  857. Paul saying

  858. pay attention

  859. and listen up.

  860. If you're a parent,

  861. you may be used

  862. to using that phrase

  863. on your children.

  864. You give them instruction

  865. and realize it goes

  866. in one year

  867. and out the other.

  868. So before you give

  869. the instruction again,

  870. you make sure

  871. you have their attention.

  872. Listen to what

  873. I'm telling you.

  874. Pay attention

  875. to what I'm saying.

  876. And so let's not

  877. walk out of here

  878. this evening

  879. without taking

  880. these commands

  881. to heart.

  882. We need to consider

  883. how does this

  884. apply to us?

  885. Certainly we've heard

  886. about being disciples

  887. and disciple makers

  888. again.

  889. But what does this

  890. mean for each one

  891. of us?

  892. This is something

  893. that we're all called

  894. to as believers.

  895. And so do we desire

  896. to be strengthened

  897. by the grace of God

  898. to be faithful disciples?

  899. Are we eager

  900. to entrust

  901. the gospel

  902. to the future

  903. generation?

  904. Are we willing

  905. to answer the call

  906. to suffer

  907. in doing so?

  908. Do we desire

  909. to see the gospel

  910. advance in our homes,

  911. in our churches,

  912. in our communities,

  913. within our families?

  914. You know,

  915. we're in the middle

  916. of the Renew Buclue

  917. campaign right now.

  918. And certainly we desire

  919. to have a building

  920. that's welcoming

  921. and functioning

  922. to be able to do

  923. the preaching

  924. of God's word

  925. and do various ministries.

  926. But as has been

  927. said before,

  928. if our vision

  929. is simply just

  930. to make a more

  931. comfortable place

  932. for us,

  933. all our efforts

  934. are going to be

  935. in vain.

  936. When we talk

  937. about Renew Buclue,

  938. it's the renewal

  939. of our hearts.

  940. It's the renewal

  941. of our relationship

  942. with God.

  943. It's the renewal

  944. of our commitment

  945. to love

  946. and serve our city.

  947. It's a renewal

  948. to see Christ's kingdom

  949. come.

  950. And so that's

  951. the true disciple

  952. of a disciple,

  953. the true desire

  954. of a disciple

  955. that we should have.

  956. And so I want

  957. to end with a quote

  958. from Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  959. the German theologian.

  960. This is from his book,

  961. which I highly recommend,

  962. The Cost of Discipleship.

  963. And he says this,

  964. And if we answer

  965. the call to discipleship,

  966. where will it lead us?

  967. What decisions

  968. and partings

  969. will it demand?

  970. To answer this question,

  971. we shall have to go

  972. to him,

  973. for only he knows

  974. the answer.

  975. Only Jesus Christ,

  976. who bids us

  977. follow him,

  978. knows the journey's end.

  979. But we do know

  980. that it will be a road

  981. of boundless mercy.

  982. Discipleship means joy.

  983. Pray with me.

  984. Lord, we thank you

  985. for the encouragement

  986. of your word this evening.

  987. We thank you

  988. for the privilege

  989. of being called disciples.

  990. And we know

  991. that it is not

  992. of our own strength,

  993. it is only by your grace

  994. that we may follow

  995. after you.

  996. And so, Lord,

  997. we ask for your grace.

  998. May it abound in us.

  999. May we desire it richly

  1000. in our lives

  1001. to experience

1002. and to share with others.

1003. May we take these commands

  1004. of Paul to heart,

  1005. to desire to entrust

  1006. the gospel

  1007. to others,

  1008. to see your kingdom

  1009. expand

  1010. and the gospel

  1011. multiplied.

  1012. And God,

  1013. may we be willing

  1014. to suffer

  1015. to see this happen.

1016. To put our comforts aside

  1017. that we may follow

  1018. wholeheartedly

  1019. after you.

  1020. God, we know

  1021. that there is

  1022. a extreme calling

  1023. that looks very different

  1024. from those

  1025. in our secular world.

  1026. And so,

1027. we ask for your help

  1028. and your guidance.

  1029. We ask,

  1030. Lord,

  1031. first and foremost,

  1032. that you draw us

  1033. close to yourself,

  1034. that you give us

  1035. a hunger for you,

  1036. that we may follow

  1037. after you

  1038. and abide in you.

1039. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1040. Amen.

1041. Now we're going to sing

  1042. our last hymn.
