  1. And while the boys and girls are going out to their Sunday school, we will read just a few

  2. verses in John chapter 4. This is the chapter we're going to focus on together. I want to read

    John 4 chapter mention

  3. for us from John chapter 4 verses 28 to 30 and then verses 39 to 42. I will be reading in English

    John 4:28–30

  4. and the words are up on the screen in Korean. And again, let's hear the word of God together.

  5. Then leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,

  6. come, see a man who told me everything I've ever done. Could this be the Messiah? They came out of

  7. the town and made their way towards him. And then down at verse 39, many of the Samaritans from that

  8. town believed in him because of the women's testimony. He told me everything I've ever done.

  9. So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them and he stayed two days. And because

  10. of his words, many more became believers. They said to the women, we no longer believe just because

  11. of what you said. Now we have heard for ourselves and we know that this man really is the savior of

  12. the world. Amen. This is God's word. So tonight, as we join together in worship, we are going to

  13. do something that I hope will be helpful. So we as a church have been looking at what we've been calling

  14. habits of a healthy church. And in God's providence, very appropriately, tonight we're thinking about

  15. worship. And so thinking about the fact that a healthy church is one that worships God in spirit

  16. and in truth. Now let me begin with the statement that all of us and all people everywhere are

  17. worshipers. I was reminded of this this week. I heard about the story of a former football player in

  18. England called Gavin Peacock, who has become a minister in the United States. He came back to

  19. Newcastle. So Newcastle, the north of England. And he was invited to a high school to talk about his faith.

  20. And he began using words borrowed from Paul from Acts chapter 17. He said,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  21. young men and women from Newcastle, I can see that you are very religious. For as I walked along your

  22. streets, I saw a t-shirt bearing this inscription, football is my religion. Newcastle United Football

  23. Club is my God. Great way to start. It's both funny and profoundly sad, isn't it? But it identifies the

  24. fact that we all the fact that we all worship. What do we mean by worship. Well, worship is anything we

  25. build our life around. That could be a video game. That could be technology. That could be our money.

  26. That could be achievement. We worship any person or object or thing when it drives our emotions.

  27. When it shapes our thoughts. When it directs our behavior. When we find ourselves saying,

  28. I couldn't imagine living without. Fill in the blank. We are all worshippers. In Scotland, we have been

  29. invited as a nation to complete a census so that the government has lots of statistics. Whether a person

  30. ticks the faith box or whether people tick the no religion box, we are all still worshippers. But the

  31. vital question then is, who should we worship and how should we worship? And John chapter 4 helps us to

    John 4 chapter mention

  32. answer these vital questions. It's an amazing chapter in the Bible and it presents us with an amazing

  33. Savior. Here we have the Lord Jesus. And this is probably the longest conversation that's recorded in the

  34. Gospels. But it's a conversation not with a Jewish person. It's with a Samaritan, typically an enemy.

  35. Not with a man, but with a woman. And not just a woman, but an immoral woman. And what does Jesus do?

  36. Jesus brings really deep truth, really deep theology, leading this woman to trust in him as the Savior of the

  37. world. So I hope through this chapter we will discover that true worship is to Jesus because he is truly God.

  38. And true worship is through Jesus because he is the way to God. So let's begin by thinking about the

  39. worship question. If you have your Bibles, you'll see that in verses 19 and 20 of John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  40. we have the worship question. Here is one of the hot topics in their religious society.

  41. What is the proper location to truly worship God? So you have the Samaritans. They had just the first

  42. five books of the Bible. And so for them, the place to worship was Mount Gerasene in Deuteronomy 11.

  43. That was where the blessings of God were called out over the people. In Deuteronomy 27, it became a place

  44. where worship happened. But if you were a Jew, then Jerusalem was the center of worship. Since the time

  45. of King David, there was that desire to connect the throne with worship. And then Solomon, of course,

  46. built the temple in Jerusalem. So this was a really hot topic. Well, look at verse 21 and see the bold,

  47. dramatic answer of Jesus to the question of where should they worship. Women, believe me,

  48. a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

  49. Jesus is bringing the news that he is about to replace it with something new. Where is this new

  50. worship center? Where is this new place where we can have access to God? We've already discovered in

  51. John's gospel, Jesus saying, it's through me. John chapter 2 verse 19. Jesus said to them,

    John 2:19

  52. destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days. And he explains in verse 21,

  53. the temple he had spoken of was his body. Jesus has come to replace the temple to fulfill what the

  54. temple stands for. Here is the place where we meet with God. Not in a building, but in the person of

  55. Jesus. Jesus as Messiah has taken the place of the temple. When is this going to happen?

  56. It's here as well. Verse 21, Jesus says, a time is coming or the hour is coming. Now, if you were to

  57. read through John's gospel, you would see that phrase many times. And in John's gospel, when Jesus

  58. speaks about the time or the hour, he's speaking about his death and his resurrection and his return

  59. to glory, taking the throne as king. And Jesus is saying, in those saving events, that is how we can have

  60. access to God. That is how we can know God. Because of what Jesus has done.

  61. We can probe the worship question deeper still. There's a question that Jesus asks. Let's call it

  62. the husband question. Verse 16. He told her, go, call your husband and come back. And so we need to ask

  63. ourselves, why does Jesus ask that question? What is he hoping to reveal as he asks that question?

  64. And I think here Jesus is probing to help the women to see her longing.

  65. She seems to be someone who is longing for security. She has had five husbands. Now she's living with

  66. another man. It could be that she is longing to find her meaning and her identity in a particular

  67. relationship. So we can say this woman clearly is a worshiper, but she has chosen the wrong object of

  68. worship. Choosing another person rather than the living God. Now there's a wonderful little phrase

  69. in John chapter 4 verse 4, where we read, now Jesus had to go through Samaria, or Jesus must go through

    John 4:4

  70. Samaria. And that's not John saying there was only one road, there was only one way that Jesus had to go.

  71. He had to go through Samaria. This is God's plan for Jesus. That he would come to this well at this

  72. point to meet this woman, to show her her sin, to reveal her need, and to bring her the love of God and

  73. the hope of God. That was his plan. The Father's plan, the Father's timing. To show her the longing in her

  74. heart that just wasn't being met. And to show that he can meet it. Now how does he do that? He does that,

  75. we can talk about the water question. So we've had the location question, the husband question. There's a

  76. water question that begins in verse 7. Here is Jesus, fully God and fully human, sitting at a well in the

  77. heat of the heat of the day, and he asks because he is thirsty, will you give me a drink? But as the

  78. conversation moves on, he goes from his own thirst, to her thirst and her longing, to then show that

  79. Jesus is the answer to that longing. And he does that, because he speaks of himself as the one who brings

  80. living water. Verse 10. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink,

  81. you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. That's a wonderful phrase.

  82. The Old Testament prophets spoke about living water. In Jeremiah 2, God uses that image of himself

  83. to speak of the goodness and the grace that he would have provided for his people, but his people chose to

  84. follow idols, broken cisterns. Ezekiel chapter 36, there is the image of this water that washes sin.

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  85. In Ezekiel 47, there's this wonderful picture of water flowing out from the temple and bringing life as it goes.

  86. Jesus comes bringing life from God. And so this whole conversation is in one sense Jesus saying to the

  87. women, you are worshipping, but your God is too small. You have been and you will be disappointed.

  88. Come to me. Come to me. Come to me and be satisfied. Come to me and find eternal life.

  89. This conversation reminds us that true worship is to Jesus because he is God and he gives eternal life.

  90. And true worship is through Jesus because he gives access to God and he sends the Spirit.

  91. Just before we move on, it's really good for us to be able to learn from Jesus here in the sense that we have

  92. a model in this conversation. What do we see Jesus doing? We see Jesus pulling down cultural barriers.

  93. speaking to a Samaritan, speaking to a Samaritan, speaking to a woman, speaking to someone known

  94. for being a sinner. Why? Because of his desire to share good news. Because he wanted to show the love

  95. of God to this woman. And isn't that something that we have so many opportunities to do here in our city?

  96. 21st century Edinburgh, as Keith was already praying, we're a multicultural city.

  97. And we too have this invitation to cross barriers to share good news.

  98. But you know, it's good for us as well to learn from this woman.

  99. To learn to put God first.

  100. Maybe especially for young people, it's important to learn to put God first.

  101. Not sport, not our achievements, not our hobbies.

  102. All of those things, they come and they go.

  103. We're invited to aim for eternal joy to worship the God of the universe.

  104. I think there are lessons for us in our families as well.

  105. For us as parents perhaps.

  106. To reflect,

  107. is worship

  108. a key value in my house?

  109. Is the legacy that I want to pass on to my children

  110. the legacy of faith?

  111. As much as we want them to be happy and successful,

  112. to have a good education,

  113. do we want them to know and to worship and to love the living God?

  114. Through knowing Jesus.

  115. And there is certainly lessons for us from this woman

  116. as local churches.

  117. As we gather as two different churches,

  118. where is our joy found?

  119. Where is our satisfaction found?

  120. We're invited as the people of God

  121. to find it in the worth of Jesus.

  122. Worship is about worth.

  123. To recognize he is the son of God.

  124. He is the savior of the world.

  125. He is our mediator.

  126. He pleads our cause.

  127. He prays for us.

  128. He is our friend who's always with us.

  129. And to find our joy in the work of Jesus.

  130. To never move away from the cross.

  131. To realize our forgiveness,

  132. our eternal life,

  133. our adoption,

  134. our justification.

  135. All of those found in his work for us

  136. in dying and then rising

  137. to forgive us and give us new life.

  138. So that's the worship question.

  139. What I want us to do now

  140. is to spend a few minutes

  141. looking at verses 23 and 24

  142. and this phrase that comes up

  143. two times

  144. about worshipping

  145. in spirit and in truth.

  146. Let me read

  147. verse 24 for us.

  148. God is spirit

  149. and his worshippers

  150. must worship

  151. in the spirit

  152. and in truth.

  153. Now,

  154. there is an important question

  155. we need to ask ourselves

  156. and it's this one.

  157. Which spirit

  158. is John's gospel talking about?

  159. Is this

  160. spirit with a capital S,

  161. the Holy Spirit?

  162. Or is this spirit

  163. with a little s?

  164. Meaning our heart,

  165. our inner self.

  166. And you will find,

  167. so we read from the

  168. newest version of the NIV

  169. and it speaks about

  170. the Holy Spirit.

  171. But you will find

  172. other versions of the Bible

  173. and they will speak about

  174. our inner self,

  175. the spirit.

  176. Now,

  177. I would suggest

  178. that as we read

  179. John's gospel

  180. and as we hear

  181. Jesus,

  182. those two are linked.

  183. They cannot be separated.

  184. Let me take you

  185. to one place.

  186. John chapter 3

    John 3:5–8

  187. verses 5 to 8.

  188. Here's a previous conversation

  189. Jesus has with a man

  190. called Nicodemus.

  191. And there he says

  192. to Nicodemus,

  193. no one can enter

  194. the kingdom of God

  195. unless they are born

  196. of water

  197. and the spirit.

  198. There,

  199. the Holy Spirit.

  200. And then in verse 8,

  201. the wind blows

  202. wherever it pleases,

  203. you hear its sound

  204. but you cannot tell

  205. where it comes from

  206. or where it is going.

  207. So it is

  208. with everyone born

  209. of the Spirit,

  210. the Holy Spirit.

  211. So that's a great image.

  212. Edinburgh has many things.

  213. One thing it certainly is,

  214. it's a windy place.

  215. We feel its effects

  216. but we don't see it.

  217. And Jesus uses that image

  218. to say,

  219. that's how the Spirit works.

  220. It works in our hearts.

  221. You can't see the Spirit

  222. but you see his effects

  223. as he transforms lives,

  224. giving life in the kingdom of God.

  225. And so,

  226. in a very real sense,

  227. true worship

  228. is only possible

  229. with the Holy Spirit.

  230. In John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  231. back to our chapter,

  232. in verse 10,

  233. Jesus speaks about

  234. the gift of God.

  235. And it's really interesting then

  236. to look at the book of Acts

  237. and to discover

  238. that both Jesus

  239. and the church

  240. use that phrase

  241. to speak of the coming

  242. of the Holy Spirit.

  243. Acts chapter 1 and 2,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  244. Acts chapter 8 and 10,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  245. the gift of God

  246. refers there

  247. to the Holy Spirit

  248. who will come

  249. to live in the hearts

  250. of his people.

  251. So when God is living

  252. in our hearts,

  253. that's when we can

  254. and we will

  255. truly worship.

  256. So,

  257. worship in the Spirit

  258. and truth

  259. absolutely makes sense

  260. because we cannot

  261. truly worship

  262. without God

  263. transforming our hearts.

  264. But it's also true

  265. to say

  266. that worship

  267. in Spirit

  268. and truth works.

  269. Makes sense.

  270. Talks about

  271. our real self,

  272. our inner self.

  273. In other words,

  274. to truly worship God,

  275. we cannot just go

  276. through the motions.

  277. and we know that

  278. from how Jesus talks

  279. because we often see

  280. Jesus in the Gospels

  281. being so critical

  282. of the people

  283. that were acting

  284. as if they were

  285. really religious,

  286. but their hearts,

  287. Jesus said,

  288. are far from me.

  289. Being religious,

  290. but no real love

  291. for the one true God.

  292. Jesus has some

  293. of his strongest words

  294. of criticism

  295. for those.

  296. Now,

  297. there's a Puritan

  298. by the name of Stephen Charnick

  299. and he had two images

  300. to speak about this,

  301. this worship

  302. that's just

  303. going through the motions.

  304. He said,

  305. it's like actors

  306. in a stage play.

  307. Perhaps we haven't

  308. been to the theater,

  309. but we can think about

  310. television

  311. or movies.

  312. We watch

  313. an actor

  314. play a role

  315. and we know

  316. that's just a performance.

  317. That's not the real them.

  318. And so it is

  319. if we're singing

  320. the songs,

  321. if we're turning up

  322. in church,

  323. but our hearts

  324. are not really in it.

  325. Charnick had another image.

  326. He said,

  327. imagine a graveyard

  328. and imagine

  329. a beautiful statue

  330. at the head

  331. of a grave.

  332. So much skill

  333. and so much beauty,

  334. but under the surface

  335. there is death.

  336. And the point is

  337. there is no

  338. faking it

  339. with God.

  340. It becomes clear

  341. in Scripture

  342. that God hates

  343. false worship.

  344. And he sees our heart,

  345. so he sees

  346. false worship.

  347. And what he wants

  348. is worship

  349. in spirit

  350. and in truth.

  351. So where does this

  352. kind of true worship

  353. come from?

  354. Well,

  355. it comes,

  356. first of all,

  357. as a gift of God

  358. because it comes

  359. from the Holy Spirit.

  360. So we are to ask

  361. God

  362. for the spirit

  363. of worship.

  364. We are to ask

  365. God

  366. for the Holy Spirit

  367. to change

  368. our hearts.

  369. To ask the Spirit

  370. to show us

  371. and to show us

  372. again

  373. the wonder,

  374. the glory

  375. of the Lord Jesus.

  376. So it comes

  377. from God's gift.

  378. But this true worship

  379. also comes

  380. from our gaze.

  381. It comes from us

  382. choosing to look

  383. to Jesus.

  384. To look to Jesus

  385. to see

  386. his glory.

  387. Here is God

  388. in the flesh.

  389. Here is Jesus,

  390. the Son of God,

  391. displaying

  392. his great love,

  393. God's great love

  394. to the world.

  395. Here is Jesus

  396. bringing us

  397. the grace

  398. of God.

  399. God's great love.

  400. Because one thing

  401. that the Bible

  402. always invites us

  403. to do

  404. is to identify

  405. with,

  406. not the hero

  407. in the story,

  408. but in this case

  409. the woman

  410. in this story.

  411. Because when we

  412. are honest,

  413. all of us

  414. are guilty

  415. of false worship.

  416. All of us

  417. have that habit

  418. to make idols

  419. that we set up

  420. in our hearts.

  421. All of us

  422. stand deserving

  423. of the judgment

  424. of God.

  425. All of us

  426. stand in need

  427. of God's grace

  428. to understand

  429. that for us

  430. to enjoy

  431. living water,

  432. Jesus

  433. must drink

  434. the cup

  435. of God's wrath

  436. for us

  437. at the cross.

  438. So that's

  439. worship

  440. in the spirit

  441. or worship

  442. in spirit,

  443. but the full phrase

  444. worship in spirit

  445. and in truth.

  446. So let's think

  447. about that.

  448. What does that

  449. talk to us about?

  450. Well,

  451. there was a leading

  452. tech CEO,

  453. a chief executive,

  454. who said

  455. a couple of years

  456. ago,

  457. I believe in God,

  458. but each person

  459. has to define

  460. that

  461. on their own.

  462. Now I wonder

  463. if we recognize

  464. that attitude

  465. in our society.

  466. Everybody is free

  467. to make up

  468. their own truth,

  469. including

  470. the freedom

  471. to make up

  472. our truth

  473. about God.

  474. Again,

  475. let me speak

  476. to the boys

  477. and girls

  478. for just

  479. a moment.

  480. Thinking about

  481. your life

  482. compared to

  483. somebody old

  484. like me,

  485. one of the things

  486. that's very different

  487. is you have

  488. so much choice.

  489. So I grew up

  490. in the days

  491. when television

  492. had four channels

  493. and then there was

  494. five,

  495. whereas you live

  496. in the day

  497. of Netflix

  498. and Amazon Prime

  499. and Disney Plus.

  500. I remember

  501. having a range

  502. of cereal

  503. to choose from

  504. in our local

  505. supermarket

  506. that probably

  507. ran to

  508. 12,

  509. 15 boxes.

  510. You have

  511. a whole aisle.

  512. We had

  513. Lego sets

  514. that were just

  515. bricks.

  516. Until the

  517. early 90s

  518. when Space

  519. Lego came

  520. and changed

  521. the world,

  522. you have

  523. every kind

  524. of Lego

  525. imaginable.

  526. Choice is nice.

  527. Choice is good.

  528. But here's one

  529. thing from God's

  530. Word.

  531. We are not

  532. free

  533. to choose

  534. what we think

  535. God is like.

  536. We do not

  537. get to make up

  538. what God is like.

  539. We need

  540. the Bible

  541. to teach us.

  542. We need

  543. God

  544. to reveal

  545. himself

  546. and that's

  547. what he's

  548. done

  549. in the Word

  550. of God

  551. and through

  552. his Son.

  553. But what happens

  554. when people try

  555. and worship

  556. without God's

  557. Word?

  558. Well,

  559. one thing

  560. that certainly

  561. happens is that

  562. people invent

  563. God in our

  564. image.

  565. Let me have

  566. a God

  567. that suits

  568. our times.

  569. Let me have

  570. a God

  571. that suits

  572. my feelings

  573. or

  574. instead of

  575. worship being

  576. all about

  577. God and

  578. his glory,

  579. it becomes

  580. all about

  581. me.

  582. There needs

  583. to be

  584. worship

  585. in truth,

  586. by which we

  587. mean worship

  588. that lines up

  589. with God's

  590. revelation

  591. of himself.

  592. We find

  593. that in

  594. the Bible

  595. and we

  596. find that

  597. in his

  598. Son,

  599. the Lord

  600. Jesus.

  601. And John's

  602. Gospel has

  603. already told

  604. us that.

  605. John chapter

    John 1:18

  606. 1,

  607. verse 18,

  608. no one has

  609. ever seen

  610. God,

  611. but the

  612. one and only

  613. Son who

  614. is himself

  615. God,

  616. and is in

  617. the closest

  618. relationship

  619. with the

  620. Father,

  621. has made

  622. him

  623. known.

  624. And then

  625. we saw

  626. in John

    John 2 chapter mention

  627. chapter 2,

  628. Jesus is

  629. how we

  630. come to

  631. truly meet

  632. with God.

  633. And then

  634. here in

  635. chapter 4,

  636. we find so

  637. many indicators

  638. that Jesus

  639. is God

  640. because only

  641. God can

  642. give the

  643. gift of

  644. eternal life,

  645. and that's

  646. what Jesus

  647. says he

  648. has come

  649. to do.

  650. And look

  651. at the very

  652. end of this

  653. conversation,

  654. look at

  655. verse 25

  656. and verse

  657. 26.

  658. The women

  659. said,

  660. I know

  661. that Messiah

  662. called Christ

  663. is coming,

  664. when he

  665. comes,

  666. he will

  667. explain

  668. everything

  669. to us.

  670. Then

  671. Jesus

  672. declared,

  673. I,

  674. the one

  675. speaking

  676. to you,

  677. I am

  678. he.

  679. Two things

  680. to notice.

  681. There is

  682. Jesus

  683. explicitly

  684. saying,

  685. I am

  686. Messiah.

  687. I am

  688. the king

  689. God

  690. promised

  691. to send.

  692. One who

  693. would rule

  694. forever,

  695. one who

  696. would save

  697. his people.

  698. But Jesus

  699. does more

  700. than that.

  701. when Jesus

  702. says,

  703. I am

  704. he,

  705. he is

  706. deliberately

  707. claiming

  708. the Old

  709. Testament

  710. name of

  711. God.

  712. He is

  713. saying,

  714. I am

  715. your God

  716. and I

  717. am

  718. your

  719. savior.

  720. And so

  721. any

  722. worship

  723. that is

  724. in truth

  725. must

  726. understand

  727. that

  728. about

  729. Jesus.

  730. So

  731. worship

  732. in truth

  733. is worship

  734. to

  735. Jesus

  736. because he

  737. is truly

  738. God.

  739. and it

  740. is worship

  741. through

  742. Jesus

  743. because he

  744. is the

  745. only way

  746. to God.

  747. And so

  748. there is a

  749. challenge

  750. for us

  751. individually,

  752. there is a

  753. challenge for

  754. us as

  755. churches

  756. to worship

  757. by the book,

  758. to worship

  759. according to

  760. the Bible

  761. and to

  762. worship

  763. the God

  764. who is

  765. revealed

  766. in the

  767. Bible

  768. at a time

  769. when truth

  770. is relative

  771. for so

  772. many,

  773. when truth

  774. is disliked

  775. by so

  776. many.

  777. We must

  778. stay

  779. faithful.

  780. So to put

  781. this whole

  782. phrase together

  783. as we're

  784. called to

  785. worship in

  786. spirit and

  787. truth,

  788. for true

  789. and not

  790. false

  791. worship,

  792. we need

  793. both a

  794. true vision

  795. of God,

  796. revelation,

  797. and a

  798. true love

  799. for God.

  800. New heart

  801. as the

  802. Spirit's

  803. working in

  804. us.

  805. We need

  806. the truth

  807. of the

  808. Bible

  809. and we

  810. need to

  811. treasure

  812. the God

  813. of the

  814. Bible.

  815. We need

  816. to know

  817. Jesus as

  818. Lord and

  819. to love

  820. him.

  821. as

  822. Lord.

  823. And in

  824. this we

  825. need to

  826. pray.

  827. We need

  828. to pray

  829. for ourselves.

  830. We need

  831. to pray

  832. for our

  833. churches.

  834. We need

  835. to pray

  836. for our

  837. preachers.

  838. And

  839. we need

  840. to pray

  841. for our

  842. city and

  843. for the

  844. nations of

  845. the world

  846. that we

  847. would see

  848. worship in

  849. spirit and

  850. in truth.

  851. One last

  852. thing to

  853. say.

  854. as the

  855. story moves

  856. from

  857. conversation

  858. back to

  859. the town

  860. and then

  861. back to

  862. Jesus.

  863. One last

  864. lesson.

  865. Worship

  866. involves

  867. head,

  868. heart and

  869. hands.

  870. It involves

  871. truth,

  872. it involves

  873. love and

  874. it involves

  875. action.

  876. One of the

  877. things the

  878. Bible says,

  879. all of life

  880. is worship.

  881. It's not

  882. just what we

  883. do here,

  884. it's what we

  885. do out

  886. there.

  887. It's how we

  888. live our

  889. lives.

  890. And look

  891. with me

  892. very briefly

  893. at this

  894. woman's

  895. story.

  896. Verse 28.

  897. Amazing.

  898. Having gone

  899. to the

  900. effort in

  901. the heat

  902. of the

  903. day to

  904. go and

  905. get water.

  906. Verse 28.

  907. Then leaving

  908. her water

  909. jar, the

  910. woman went

  911. back to

  912. the town.

  913. She'd

  914. found better

  915. water.

  916. She'd

  917. found living

  918. water.

  919. What does

  920. she do?

  921. She comes

  922. back to

  923. the town.

  924. She freely

  925. confesses

  926. her sin.

  927. Come see

  928. me, a man

  929. who told

  930. me everything

  931. I've ever

  932. done.

  933. She points

  934. her town to

  935. Jesus.

  936. Could this

  937. be the

  938. Messiah?

  939. And so

  940. because of

  941. her, the

  942. town began

  943. to go out

  944. to meet

  945. with Jesus.

  946. And look

  947. at the

  948. impact of

  949. her worship.

  950. Verse 39.

  951. Many of

  952. the Samaritans

  953. from that

  954. town believed

  955. in him because

  956. of the

  957. woman's

  958. testimony.

  959. He told

  960. me everything

  961. I've ever

  962. done.

  963. Look at

  964. verse 42.

  965. They said

  966. to the

  967. woman,

  968. we no

  969. longer

  970. believe just

  971. because of

  972. what you

  973. said.

  974. Now we've

  975. heard for

  976. ourselves and

  977. we know

  978. that this

  979. man really

  980. is the

  981. saviour of

  982. the world.

  983. So because

  984. she testifies

  985. that Jesus

  986. is the

  987. saviour,

  988. many more

  989. come to

  990. trust in

  991. Jesus too.

  992. Here's a

  993. woman who's

  994. doing Romans

  995. 12.

  996. She's presenting

  997. her body as a

  998. living sacrifice.

  999. This is her

  1000. spiritual worship.

  1001. She shares

  1002. what she knows

  1003. of Jesus so

  1004. others might

  1005. come to

  1006. hear and

  1007. believe.

  1008. Friends,

  1009. this is a

  1010. wonderful

  1011. chapter from

  1012. God's word

  1013. reminding us

  1014. that Jesus

  1015. has come as

  1016. saviour of

  1017. the world.

  1018. And we will

  1019. shortly share

  1020. the Lord's

  1021. supper to

  1022. remind us of

  1023. the cost of

  1024. our salvation.

  1025. Jesus has

  1026. come so we

  1027. would know

  1028. the truth and

  1029. that truth

  1030. would set

  1031. us free.

  1032. Jesus has

  1033. come to

  1034. give the

  1035. spirit that

  1036. spirit might

  1037. live inside

  1038. us, fill us

  1039. with love

  1040. and joy in

  1041. for Jesus

  1042. that we

  1043. would share

  1044. with others

  1045. so that all

  1046. of our life

  1047. would be

  1048. worship,

  1049. that we

  1050. would recognise

  1051. truly Jesus

  1052. is worthy

  1053. of all glory

  1054. and that we

  1055. want others

  1056. to know the

  1057. same.

  1058. May that be

  1059. true of you,

  1060. may that be

  1061. true of me,

  1062. may that be

  1063. true of the

  1064. churches that

  1065. we represent

  1066. as we come

  1067. to recognise

  1068. that a

  1069. healthy church

  1070. must always

  1071. worship in

  1072. spirit and

  1073. in truth.

  1074. Now let me

  1075. close with a

  1076. brief word of

  1077. prayer before

  1078. we come to

  1079. the Lord's

  1080. supper.

  1081. Lord, our

  1082. God, we

  1083. thank you for

  1084. this wonderful

  1085. chapter of the

  1086. Bible and for

  1087. the way it

  1088. reveals to us

  1089. the heart of

  1090. the Lord

  1091. Jesus.

  1092. Thank you that

  1093. he was willing

  1094. to spend time

  1095. with this

  1096. woman that

  1097. everybody else

  1098. was happy to

  1099. ignore.

  1100. Thank you that

  1101. her country

  1102. and culture,

  1103. that her

  1104. lifestyle was

  1105. no barrier

  1106. to her

  1107. receiving good

  1108. news and

  1109. living water.

  1110. Lord, we

  1111. pray that

  1112. you would

  1113. help us

  1114. to value

  1115. Jesus so

  1116. much that

  1117. we would be

  1118. looking for

  1119. opportunities to

  1120. take that good

  1121. news to

  1122. others.

  1123. Lord, we

  1124. pray that your

  1125. spirit would be

  1126. at work in

  1127. our hearts,

  1128. constantly

  1129. changing it,

  1130. filling our

  1131. hearts with

  1132. more and more

  1133. love for

  1134. Jesus.

  1135. us.

  1136. We pray

  1137. that you

  1138. would give

  1139. us that

  1140. desire to

  1141. read and

  1142. to study and

  1143. to hear your

  1144. word being

  1145. preached so

  1146. that our

  1147. worship would

  1148. be in line

  1149. with your

  1150. revelation,

  1151. with your

  1152. truth.

  1153. Lord, we

  1154. pray that you

  1155. would give to

  1156. our churches

  1157. this true

  1158. worship.

  1159. Protect us

  1160. from false

  1161. worship that's

  1162. just going

  1163. through the

  1164. motions and

  1165. doing our

  1166. duty.

  1167. Protect us

  1168. from false

  1169. worship and

  1170. not truly

  1171. teach what

  1172. the Bible

  1173. says.

  1174. Help us,

  1175. we pray,

  1176. for our own

  1177. sake and for

  1178. the sake of

  1179. the city

  1180. around us and

  1181. for the nations

  1182. of the world.

  1183. We pray in

  1184. Jesus' name.

  1185. Amen.

  1186. Now, we

  1187. come to

  1188. share together

  1189. the Lord's

  1190. Supper.

  1191. The Lord's

  1192. Supper is

  1193. for all those

  1194. who have put

  1195. their trust in

  1196. Jesus as

  1197. Lord and

  1198. Saviour,

  1199. those who are

  1200. members of

  1201. God's church,

  1202. and those who

  1203. are aware of

  1204. their constant

  1205. need of

  1206. God's grace.

  1207. Before we

  1208. share, I

  1209. want to

  1210. read together

  1211. words that

  1212. you'll see up

  1213. on the screen

  1214. from Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  1215. chapter 36.

  1216. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  1217. chapter 36,

  1218. and we'll

  1219. read verse

  1220. 25 to

  1221. 27,

  1222. where we

  1223. read,

  1224. I will

  1225. sprinkle clean

  1226. water on

  1227. you, and

  1228. you will be

  1229. clean.

  1230. I will

  1231. cleanse you

  1232. from all

  1233. your impurities

  1234. and from

  1235. all your

  1236. idols.

  1237. I will

  1238. give you a

  1239. new heart

  1240. and put a

  1241. new spirit

  1242. in you.

  1243. I will

  1244. remove from

  1245. you your

  1246. heart of

  1247. stone and

  1248. give you a

  1249. heart of

  1250. flesh, and

  1251. I will put

  1252. my spirit

  1253. in you and

  1254. move you to

  1255. follow my

  1256. decrees and

  1257. be careful to

  1258. keep my

  1259. laws.

  1260. Jesus came

  1261. to establish

  1262. the new

  1263. covenant.

  1264. Through his

  1265. life,

  1266. death,

  1267. and

  1268. resurrection,

  1269. and by

  1270. sending the

  1271. Holy Spirit.

  1272. And now

  1273. for those of

  1274. us who are

  1275. in Christ,

  1276. we have the

  1277. spirit living

  1278. in us,

  1279. so that we

  1280. have a

  1281. new heart

  1282. and a

  1283. new power

  1284. to obey

  1285. the commands

  1286. of God.

  1287. Now

  1288. through this

  1289. new covenant,

  1290. our sins

  1291. are forgiven,

  1292. and the

  1293. spirit of

  1294. God is

  1295. given to

  1296. us to

  1297. help us

  1298. live in

  1299. trust and

  1300. obedience.

  1301. As we

  1302. share the

  1303. Lord's

  1304. Supper,

  1305. it is a

  1306. reminder of

  1307. the cross

  1308. of Jesus

  1309. that secures

  1310. for us all

  1311. the benefits

  1312. of the

  1313. new covenant.

  1314. covenant.

  1315. And also,

  1316. the Lord's

  1317. Supper is a

  1318. beautiful

  1319. reminder of

  1320. our unity

  1321. as the

  1322. body of

  1323. Christ.

  1324. That as we

  1325. share the

  1326. Lord's

  1327. Supper

  1328. today,

  1329. let's

  1330. remember that

  1331. this is a

  1332. taste,

  1333. a first

  1334. taste of

  1335. the feast

  1336. to come

  1337. in eternal

  1338. glory.

  1339. So let

  1340. me explain

  1341. for the

  1342. sake of

  1343. our

  1344. visitors

  1345. how we

  1346. have been

  1347. receiving

  1348. Lord's

  1349. Supper

  1350. recently.

  1351. So you'll

  1352. be directed

  1353. to come

  1354. down from

  1355. the back

  1356. row by

  1357. row,

  1358. and you'll

  1359. see there

  1360. are bread,

  1361. there's bread

  1362. and wine

  1363. and little

  1364. cups on

  1365. either side.

  1366. If you

  1367. can take

  1368. one of

  1369. each,

  1370. take them

  1371. back to

  1372. your seat,

  1373. hold on

  1374. to them,

  1375. and we'll

  1376. eat and

  1377. we'll drink

  1378. together,

  1379. and then

  1380. when we're

  1381. finished you

  1382. can just

  1383. leave your

  1384. little cups

  1385. on the

  1386. pews and

  1387. we will

  1388. collect them.

  1389. So again,

  1390. as we

  1391. prepare to

  1392. do that,

  1393. we will

  1394. sing.

  1395. We have

  1396. a hymn

  1397. to help

  1398. us to

  1399. reflect

  1400. as we

  1401. come to

  1402. collect the

  1403. elements of

  1404. the Lord's

  1405. Supper,

  1406. when I

  1407. survey the

  1408. wondrous

  1409. cross,

  1410. and as

  1411. we begin

  1412. to sing,

  1413. you'll

  1414. be

  1415. directed

  1416. to

  1417. come

  1418. down

  1419. if

  1420. you're

  1421. sharing

  1422. the

  1423. Lord's

  1424. Supper

  1425. with

  1426. us.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. When I

  1429. surveyed

  1430. the

  1431. wondrous

  1432. cross,

  1433. on which

  1434. the

  1435. Prince

  1436. of

  1437. glory

  1438. died,

  1439. my

  1440. riches

  1441. gained,

  1442. I count

  1443. love,

  1444. and

  1445. poor

  1446. contempt,

  1447. all

  1448. know

  1449. my

  1450. pride.

  1451. Forbidden,

  1452. Lord,

  1453. that I

  1454. should

  1455. boast,

  1456. save

  1457. in the

  1458. death

  1459. of

  1460. Christ

  1461. my

  1462. God.

  1463. Oh,

  1464. the

  1465. vain

  1466. things

  1467. that

  1468. charm

  1469. emuls,

  1470. I

  1471. sacrifice

  1472. them

  1473. to

  1474. His

  1475. blood.

  1476. See

  1477. from

  1478. His

  1479. head,

  1480. His

  1481. hands,

  1482. His

  1483. feet,

  1484. sorrow

  1485. and

  1486. love

  1487. flow

  1488. mingled

  1489. out.

  1490. Did

  1491. earth

  1492. such

  1493. love

  1494. and

  1495. sorrow

  1496. made

  1497. or

  1498. thorns

  1499. composed

  1500. so

  1501. rich

  1502. a

  1503. crown?

  1504. Were

  1505. the

  1506. whole

  1507. realm

  1508. of

  1509. nature

  1510. mine,

  1511. there

  1512. were

  1513. a

  1514. present

  1515. far

  1516. too

  1517. small.

  1518. Love

  1519. so

  1520. amazing,

  1521. so

  1522. divine,

  1523. demands

  1524. my

  1525. soul,

  1526. my

  1527. life,

  1528. my

  1529. all.

  1530. Amen.

  1531. j

  1532. oh

  1533. I

  1534. thank you

  1535. here,

  1536. bye.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

1539. Let me read for us from 1 Corinthians chapter 11, verse 23.

    1 Corinthians 11:23

  1540. These words of institution.

1541. For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you.

1542. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread and gave thanks.

1543. Let's take a moment to pray together.

1544. Lord, it is true that we're the whole realm of nature ours.

1545. That would be an offering far too small.

1546. As we consider the work of Jesus, your Son, the Holy One, on the cross.

1547. Taking our sin on himself.

1548. Suffering spiritual agony as he felt forsaken by his Father.

1549. Taking on himself the just judgment of God for our sin.

1550. Though he knew no sin.

1551. That we might be declared righteous.

1552. That we might be forgiven.

1553. That we might have new life.

1554. That we might be adopted into the family of God.

1555. Lord, we are so thankful for what this bread and wine represents to us.

1556. The life-giving, sacrificial love of the Lord Jesus.

1557. And may we be conscious of his help and his presence and his grace.

1558. As we gather at his table.

1559. We pray in Jesus' name.

  1560. Amen.

1561. So the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread.

1562. And when he'd given thanks, he broke it and said,

1563. This is my body, which is for you.

1564. Do this in remembrance of me.

1565. So let's eat together to remember.

  1566. Amen.

1567. And in the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying,

1568. This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

1569. Do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me.

1570. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,

1571. you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

1572. So let's drink to remember and to proclaim.

1573. And now our closing hymn is the hymn,

  1574. In Christ Alone.

1575. And then afterwards, Jacob will come and we will receive the benediction from him.

1576. So let's stand and let's sing God and Saviour.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. In Christ alone.

1579. In Christ alone my hope is found.

1580. He is my life, my strength, my soul.

1581. This cornerstone, this solid ground

1582. From through the fiercest rod and store

1583. What high so low, what best so peace

1584. When fears are still, when striving cease

1585. My Comforter, my all in all

1586. Here in the love of Christ I stand

1587. In Christ alone, who took on flesh

1588. Fullness of God in helpless pain

1589. This gift of love, this righteousness

1590. Scorned by the ones He came to save

1591. Till on the cross as Jesus died

1592. The rest of God was satisfied

1593. For every sin on Him was laid

1594. Here in the death of Christ I live

1595. There in the ground His body lay

1596. Light of the world by darkness sway

1597. Then burning forth in glorious day

1598. Off from the grave He rose again

1599. And as He stands in victory

1600. Sin curse has lost His grave on me

1601. For I am His and He is mine

1602. Bought with the precious blood of Christ

1603. No guilt in life, no fear in death

1604. This is the power of Christ in me

1605. From life's first Christ in final breath

  1606. Jesus commands my destiny

1607. No power of land, no scheme of man

1608. Can ever pluck me from His hand

1609. Till He returns or calls me home

1610. Till He returns or calls me home

1611. Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

1612. No power of hell, no scheme of man

1613. Can ever pluck me from His hand

1614. Till He returns or calls me home

1615. Here in the power of Christ I stand

1616. This is the word of God

  1617. In 2 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 13

    2 Corinthians 13:13

1618. 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 하나님의 사랑과

1619. 성령의 교통하심이 너희 무리와 함께 있을지어다

  1620. 아멘

1621. Again, everybody for gathering together to worship

  1622. So encouraging two invitations

  1623. One that was planned

1624. Come and share some food with us

1625. We're looking forward to that

  1626. But also

  1627. Wednesday

  1628. From 6 o'clock till 7 o'clock

1629. We have a praise and prayer event

1630. We love to have people gather

1631. To worship and to pray with us

1632. For one another and for our city

1633. So if you have an hour on Wednesday

  1634. Please join us

  1635. Thank you

  1636. Thank you

  1637. Thank you

  1638. .

  1639. Thank you.

  1640. Thank you.

  1641. Thank you.

  1642. Thank you.

  1643. Thank you.
