  1. Scripture reading comes from Matthew chapter 4. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  2. or your own Bible. In Matthew 4 verse 13 we read,

    Matthew 4:13

  3. And leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capnum by the sea in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.

  4. Then in verse 17 we read, From that time Jesus began to preach, saying,

  5. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  6. While walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother,

  7. casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them,

  8. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

  9. Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there, he saw two other brothers,

  10. James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in the boat with Zebedee, their father,

  11. mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

  12. And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,

  13. and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

  14. Amen. This is the word of God.

  15. Great. Well, good morning, Watermark. It is wonderful to be with you again.

  16. If you are new to the Watermark family or the church, my name is Kevin,

  17. and it is wonderful to be with you this morning and for us to be able to look at the scriptures together.

  18. Thank you, Gary and Kathy, for reading from Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  19. The scripture we read this morning, it says this,

  20. that when Jesus is walking along the Sea of Galilee,

  21. he sees these two brothers, Peter and Andrew,

  22. casting the net into the sea for their fishermen,

  23. and he says to them,

  24. Follow me.

  25. Follow me.

  26. One of the most fundamental descriptions of what it means to be a Christian is to be a follower of Jesus.

  27. In fact, right in the beginning, when the church was started,

  28. the disciples were not called Christians.

  29. They were called followers of Jesus.

  30. Some believe that the word Christian, which only came about a couple of decades later,

  31. was actually meant to be an insult.

  32. It was used by those that were mocking these followers of Jesus to say,

  33. Hey, you guys are talking about Christ.

  34. You are like mini Christ.

  35. You are Christians.

  36. And so they came up with this word, the Christians,

  37. as an insult, an offense to these followers of Jesus.

  38. But in the early days, the disciples were known as followers of Jesus.

  39. This morning, I want us to look at this question.

  40. What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus?

  41. When we think of followers of Jesus,

  42. we might think of people that walk the dusty roads of Jerusalem or Palestine,

  43. or those that walked with Jesus on the hilltops of Galilee,

  44. or maybe those that listened to Jesus' teaching in the synagogues and the temple courts.

  45. But what does it mean to follow Jesus today in 21st century Hong Kong?

  46. What does it look like to be a follower of Jesus?

  47. Not just for one hour on a Sunday morning,

  48. but as you're riding on the MTR on the way to work,

  49. when you're out having a meal with a friend,

  50. when you're on your way to work or to school.

  51. And most importantly, what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus

  52. when you're at home with your parents,

  53. with your spouse, with your children?

  54. Maybe if you stay at home on your own,

  55. what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus in those times and those moments?

  56. To answer that question,

  57. we're going to go back to the very first century,

  58. and we're going to look at what did it mean when Jesus called a bunch of men to follow Him.

  59. We're going to look at what did it mean for them,

  60. and then we're going to come back to 21st century Hong Kong

  61. and ask the question,

  62. what does it mean for us?

  63. So that's where we're going today.

  64. Now, when Jesus said to these very first disciples,

  65. these fishermen,

  66. follow me,

  67. Jesus wasn't the first or the only man to say,

  68. follow me.

  69. In fact,

  70. that phrase was a very common phrase.

  71. It was something that was used regularly.

  72. It was a well-known phrase.

  73. Everyone would have known what it meant.

  74. And the reason is because this is the way that the culture or society worked in first century Israel.

  75. In first century Israel,

  76. children at the age of four or five would go off to school,

  77. a school called Beth Sefer,

  78. which meant the house of the book.

  79. And they would typically go there for six, seven years.

  80. They would learn things like basic writing,

  81. reading,

  82. basic maths.

  83. And at the house of the book,

  84. all children from four or five up to the ages of 12 or so

  85. would spend a couple of years studying the book.

  86. And what they mean by the book is the Torah,

  87. the first five books of the Old Testament,

  88. Genesis through to Deuteronomy.

  89. And so children would all go to Beth Sefer,

  90. the house of the book,

  91. and learn how to read,

  92. learn how to write,

  93. learn basic maths from the book of the law.

  94. But one of the things is that by the time children reach this age of around 12 years old,

  95. almost all children would have memorized almost the first five books of the Old Testament,

  96. the Torah,

  97. learned it off by heart.

  98. By that stage,

  99. the age of 12,

  100. most of the education was finished.

  101. A lot of children would then leave school.

  102. Young girls would go and follow their mother,

  103. learn how to be a young woman in society.

  104. Some of them would go off and get married.

  105. The men would join their fathers as apprentices to their fathers,

  106. learn the family trade,

  107. and would follow their father in the family business.

  108. For the very best and brightest students,

  109. those who had really done well or shown great promise,

  110. they would be admitted to secondary school called Beth Talmud or Beth Midrash,

  111. which means the house of learning.

  112. And for the next four or five years,

  113. from the age of 12,

  114. 13,

  115. up to 16,

  116. 17,

  117. the best and the brightest students would go to the synagogue every day.

  118. They would have a hired rabbi,

  119. a tutor,

  120. that would come for the best students of the town,

  121. and they would learn the rest of the Old Testament scriptures.

  122. They would study the prophets,

  123. the writings,

  124. the wisdom,

  125. the history books.

  126. And by the age of 16,

  127. 17,

  128. 18,

  129. almost all of these students that were considered the best and the brightest of the town,

  130. would memorize almost the entire Old Testament scriptures.

  131. They would not only know what it said,

  132. but they'd understand the meaning and the depth and the interplay between the various scriptures.

  133. And so for many of those students,

  134. by the time they get to 17 or so,

  135. they know the whole Old Testament,

  136. and they would then graduate from Beth Talmud,

  137. join the family practice,

  138. join the family business as apprentices to their dad.

  139. Some of them would then get married,

  140. and life would begin.

  141. Now,

  142. for some students,

  143. for the very best and the brightest of those that had graduated from Beth Talmud,

  144. those that the rabbi thought had what it took,

  145. had the goods to become a real leader in society,

  146. a religious leader,

  147. the rabbi would approach them and say,

  148. I think you have what it takes to become a religious leader yourself,

  149. a rabbi yourself.

  150. And they would encourage them to go and find a rabbi in society,

  151. another leader,

  152. one who they respected,

  153. one that they looked up to,

  154. one who they thought that they could emulate and become like.

  155. And those students,

  156. those 16,

  157. 17 year old boys would go and find a rabbi that they really respected,

  158. and attach themselves to the rabbi,

  159. to become his apprentice,

  160. his Talmudin,

  161. or his disciple.

  162. And so what they'd do is,

  163. having looked at all the various rabbis,

  164. think,

  165. who do I really respect?

  166. Who can I become like?

  167. They would go to a rabbi and ask if they could be his apprentice,

  168. his disciple.

  169. The rabbi would then grill them,

  170. give them one of the most intensive job interview processes you can imagine.

  171. They'd ask him all sorts of questions.

  172. What do you understand about this?

  173. What do you think of this rabbi's teaching?

  174. What did Jeremiah say,

  175. mean when he said this?

  176. What about Moses here?

  177. And you'd go through a rigorous job interview process.

  178. And if that rabbi thought that you had the goods,

  179. if he thought you were good enough to become like him,

  180. if he thought that you had the potential to grow to the place where you could emulate him

  181. and become as good as he was,

  182. he would turn around and say these famous words,

  183. come and follow me.

  184. Come and follow me.

  185. And so these apprentices,

  186. these Talmudin,

  187. these disciples,

  188. would then dedicate the next 10 years of their life

  189. following in the footsteps of their rabbi leader.

  190. And their job wasn't just to know what the rabbi knows.

  191. A student just wants to know what his teacher knows to pass the exam.

  192. An apprentice,

  193. a Talmudin,

  194. a disciple,

  195. wants to learn everything he can.

  196. He would live with his rabbi.

  197. He would sleep in the same room as his rabbi.

  198. He would eat with him.

  199. He would even learn to speak like his rabbi.

  200. His mannerisms would be the same as the rabbi.

  201. The job of a disciple,

  202. of an apprentice,

  203. was to become a carbon copy version of your rabbi,

  204. of your leader.

  205. And so the essence of what it meant to be a disciple

  206. is to be so close to your teacher,

  207. to spend so much time with him,

  208. learning from him,

  209. that ultimately you became like him.

  210. And so as a Talmudin,

  211. as a disciple,

  212. your life revolved around these three things.

  213. To be with your teacher,

  214. to become like your teacher,

  215. and then ultimately to do the things that your teacher did.

  216. And so after years of following your teacher,

  217. eventually your teacher might think that you have grown enough

  218. where there's no more that you can do to become like him.

  219. You speak like him.

  220. You act like him.

  221. Your mannerisms are the same as him.

  222. There's nothing more that you can do to grow in your emulation of him.

  223. Eventually your rabbi would turn to you

  224. and commission you and send you out

  225. to go and find your own disciples

  226. and to train them and disciple them

  227. and teach them in the manner

  228. in which you had been taught.

  229. This is what first century discipleship was all about.

  230. Now, we don't live in first century Palestine,

  231. but what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus

  232. in 21st century Hong Kong?

  233. Dallas Willard,

  234. who's one of the most brilliant thinkers,

  235. Christian thinkers of the last generation,

  236. said this,

  237. The New Testament defines a disciple as someone

  238. who is with Jesus,

  239. learning from Jesus how to live their life

  240. as if Jesus would live their life,

  241. as if he were in their place.

  242. In other words,

  243. a disciple of Jesus is someone who's saying

  244. if Jesus lived in my life,

  245. in my place,

  246. in 21st century Hong Kong,

  247. if Jesus was doing homeschooling with the kids,

  248. if Jesus was on the way to this board meeting,

  249. if Jesus was studying

  250. or having this conversation

  251. or having this relational difficulty with this person,

  252. how would Jesus do it?

  253. And learning from Jesus to live their life

  254. as if Jesus would,

  255. living my life in my place.

  256. What Dallas Willard is saying

  257. is even today,

  258. in 21st century Hong Kong,

  259. followers of Jesus are those

  260. who are to be with Jesus

  261. in order to learn

  262. how to become like Jesus,

  263. in order to learn,

  264. what does it mean

  265. to do what Jesus did?

  266. Over the next few weeks,

  267. we're going to look at these three things.

  268. Being with Jesus,

  269. becoming like Jesus,

  270. doing the things that Jesus did.

  271. And today,

  272. I want us just to think about the first one.

  273. What does it mean

  274. when Jesus calls us to follow Him

  275. to be with Jesus?

  276. Now,

  277. one last thing before we dive in

  278. to what that looks like.

  279. In Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  280. when Jesus arrives in Galilee

  281. and begins His ministry,

  282. in many ways,

  283. He's doing this exact thing.

  284. He's doing so in line

  285. with traditional Jewish practice.

  286. He's gaining disciples

  287. to come and follow Him,

  288. to be with Him,

  289. and to become like Him.

  290. And so when Jesus says

  291. to Peter and Andrew,

  292. follow me,

  293. this is exactly what they would have

  294. understood Jesus to men.

  295. Jesus wasn't just

  296. some random person.

  297. This is why they can follow

  298. everything.

  299. They can leave everything

  300. and follow Him.

  301. Jesus wasn't just some stranger

  302. walking along the street

  303. saying,

  304. hey, follow me,

  305. and they say,

  306. okay,

  307. and they leave the family business.

  308. They would have understood

  309. the context

  310. that this was a rabbi

  311. calling them

  312. to be His disciples.

  313. But there's two distinct,

  314. two radical differences

  315. between the way Jesus does it

  316. and the ordinary practice

  317. of His day.

  318. The first one is this.

  319. Look at what Jesus says

  320. in verse 17.

  321. Gary read it to us earlier.

  322. Jesus says,

  323. repent,

  324. for the kingdom of heaven

  325. is at hand.

  326. Jesus comes

  327. and He arrives on the scene

  328. as a religious leader,

  329. a rabbi.

  330. He's calling these disciples

  331. to follow.

  332. But at the same time,

  333. He's not just a rabbi.

  334. He's not just a religious leader.

  335. He's coming

  336. as heaven and earth's true king.

  337. He's calling people

  338. to follow Him,

  339. to join His ranks,

  340. not just as a rabbi,

  341. not just with some new brand

  342. of spiritual teaching.

  343. He's coming as one,

  344. not just who has come

  345. to shake things up.

  346. Jesus Christ comes

  347. as heaven and earth's true king

  348. and He's inviting

  349. all sorts of people,

  350. not merely to learn from Him,

  351. but to experience life

  352. in His kingdom

  353. with Jesus as king.

  354. All the other rabbis

  355. of the day would have,

  356. part of their discipleship

  357. would have said,

  358. well, you know,

  359. let's look at the scripture.

  360. Moses says this

  361. and Rabbi Hillel says this

  362. and Rabbi Akhtar says this,

  363. but what do you guys think?

  364. Jesus says,

  365. you've heard that

  366. it has said

  367. this and this and this,

  368. but I say to you,

  369. this is what God says.

  370. Jesus comes with

  371. unique authority

  372. because He's not

  373. merely a religious leader.

  374. He's heaven and earth's

  375. true king.

  376. Jesus comes to invite

  377. His followers

  378. into His kingdom.

  379. But notice the second thing.

  380. Remember what I said

  381. is that who are the kinds

  382. of people

  383. that were eligible

  384. to be disciples,

  385. apprentices,

  386. of the rabbis?

  387. It was those

  388. who were top of the class,

  389. those who excelled,

  390. those that were

  391. A-grade students

  392. that had beaten

  393. everybody else.

  394. It was those

  395. who had sought out

  396. the very best teachers

  397. of their day

  398. and had gone through

  399. this grueling interview process,

  400. past interview process,

  401. answered all the questions

  402. perfectly,

  403. those that the rabbi

  404. thought they had the goods,

  405. what it took

  406. to become their follower.

  407. Having passed

  408. this rigorous process,

  409. being considered good enough

  410. and having what it takes,

  411. finally the top of the top,

  412. the very best of the best

  413. are admitted

  414. to be disciples.

  415. or apprentices

  416. of the rabbi.

  417. It's kind of like

  418. the Hong Kong

  419. schooling system,

  420. right?

  421. Anyone,

  422. any parent

  423. that has high school students,

  424. you know what it's like.

  425. No place for third,

  426. fourth place

  427. in the Hong Kong

  428. schooling system.

  429. You're either top

  430. of the class

  431. or you know one.

  432. That's the way it feels.

  433. But notice

  434. who are the people

  435. that Jesus calls

  436. to be his disciples?

  437. It's the fishermen.

  438. Later on,

  439. as Alan reminded us,

  440. it's the tax collectors.

  441. It's political writers.

  442. It's insurrectionists.

  443. Those who would

  444. never,

  445. ever,

  446. ever be considered

  447. good enough,

  448. anywhere near

  449. worthy enough,

  450. Jesus comes to them

  451. and says,

  452. hey you,

  453. come and follow me.

  454. Jesus doesn't wait

  455. for the top of the class

  456. to come to him.

  457. Jesus goes and finds

  458. those that have been

  459. overlooked in society,

  460. those that nobody else

  461. would consider good enough

  462. and he says,

  463. I want you

  464. to come and be with me

  465. and follow me.

  466. Being fishermen

  467. with their father,

  468. it probably meant

  469. that Peter and Andrew,

  470. James and John

  471. were those that

  472. maybe they went to

  473. Bethsefer Primary School

  474. at 12 years old.

  475. They probably would have

  476. finished their education

  477. and joined the ranks

  478. of being apprentices

  479. to their father,

  480. learning the family trade.

  481. Jesus comes to them

  482. and none of them

  483. engage in this

  484. rigorous interview process.

  485. None of them

  486. send in their applications.

  487. Jesus is the one

  488. who goes to them

  489. and he finds them

  490. and he says,

  491. I want you

  492. to be part of my team.

  493. I want you

  494. to be my followers.

  495. Friends,

  496. you know what this means?

  497. Jesus calls those

  498. that others

  499. would never have considered

  500. in a million years

  501. to be his followers.

  502. And what this means

  503. is that being a follower

  504. of Jesus

  505. is entirely,

  506. absolutely

  507. by grace.

  508. It's all by grace.

  509. Being a follower

  510. of Jesus

  511. is all by grace.

  512. Right from the beginning,

  513. Jesus doesn't pick

  514. the biggest

  515. or the brightest

  516. or the smartest.

  517. Jesus doesn't pick

  518. those with the credentials.

  519. Jesus chooses

  520. those that are overlooked,

  521. those that are despised,

  522. those that dropped

  523. out of school.

  524. Jesus chooses those

  525. that nobody considers

  526. are good enough

  527. and he says,

  528. I want you to come

  529. and follow me.

  530. Friends,

  531. we live in one

  532. of the most

  533. performance-orientated

  534. societies and cultures

  535. in the world

  536. where your value

  537. and your worth

  538. and your identity

  539. are all tied

  540. to how well you perform

  541. but not so with Jesus.

  542. Right from the very beginning,

  543. Jesus comes and he says,

  544. the way into the kingdom

  545. of God is all by grace.

  546. It's not by merit.

  547. It's not to be earned.

  548. It's not for those

  549. that are most dedicated,

  550. the smartest,

  551. the brightest.

  552. It's by grace.

  553. It's all by grace.

  554. And if you don't get that,

  555. you'll always feel insecure.

  556. You'll always feel like

  557. you haven't done enough

  558. or you're not good enough

  559. or you haven't performed

  560. well enough.

  561. Friends,

  562. every one of us

  563. need to realize

  564. Jesus calls us

  565. into his kingdom

  566. but it's all by grace.

  567. Now,

  568. what does that all mean?

  569. It means when Jesus says,

  570. come and follow me,

  571. he's inviting us in grace

  572. to come and learn

  573. what life looks like

  574. under his ever-present reign

  575. as king.

  576. He's inviting us

  577. to be with him,

  578. to learn with him,

  579. to become like him

  580. but not just as a sage,

  581. as a rabbi.

  582. Jesus is inviting us

  583. as heaven and earth

  584. true king

  585. to learn to live our lives

  586. as apprentices of Jesus,

  587. disciples of Jesus

  588. under the rule

  589. and the reign

  590. of the ever-present rule

  591. of King Jesus.

  592. Now,

  593. I know that

  594. that sounds very

  595. philosophical and ethereal

  596. and as Hong Kongers

  597. we like things

  598. that are practical

  599. and pragmatic.

  600. We like to be told

  601. what are the ten steps

  602. that I must do

  603. to be a follower of Jesus.

  604. Jesus has a lot to say

  605. about the way

  606. that we should live our lives.

  607. In fact,

  608. the next three chapters

  609. of Matthew's Gospel

  610. after this passage

  611. that we read

  612. is the Sermon on the Mount

  613. and the Sermon on the Mount

  614. is kind of like

  615. Jesus' kingdom manifesto.

  616. It describes

  617. what life in the kingdom

  618. looks like

  619. for followers of Jesus.

  620. And as you read

  621. the Sermon on the Mount

  622. you're going to see

  623. that Jesus says

  624. that life in the kingdom

  625. looks like holiness.

  626. It looks like purity.

  627. It looks like compassion.

  628. It looks like generosity.

  629. But the point

  630. that Jesus is making

  631. is this.

  632. The life of a follower

  633. of Jesus

  634. is not simply

  635. a list of do's and don'ts.

  636. Rather,

  637. it is a life

  638. that lived in fellowship

  639. or maybe followership

  640. with Jesus as king.

  641. And so this is the big idea

  642. for today.

  643. If you only get one thing

  644. this is it.

  645. When Jesus calls

  646. men and women

  647. to follow him

  648. the very first thing

  649. that that means

  650. is to come and be with him.

  651. To orientate our lives

  652. around him.

  653. And out of that relationship

  654. to learn to become

  655. the kinds of people

  656. that he's calling us to be.

  657. Jesus is not primarily saying

  658. come and do a bunch of things.

  659. His primary calling is this.

  660. Come and be with me.

  661. In Mark's gospel

  662. when Jesus calls

  663. the disciples

  664. or the apostles

  665. this is what it says.

  666. Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  667. He appointed the twelve

  668. those whom he also

  669. named apostles

  670. that they might

  671. be with him

  672. and that he might

  673. send them out to preach.

  674. The first thing

  675. Jesus says to the apostles

  676. is come

  677. and be with me.

  678. In the book of Acts

  679. which Luke writes

  680. the apostles

  681. are arrested in Jerusalem

  682. because they do

  683. the very thing

  684. that Jesus

  685. has asked them to do.

  686. They go out

  687. and they preach

  688. and they're turning

  689. the city upside down.

  690. They fill in Jerusalem

  691. with the message of Jesus.

  692. The religious leaders

  693. aren't so happy about this

  694. so they arrest the apostles

  695. and throw them in jail.

  696. And Luke records this.

  697. It says

  698. when they

  699. that's the religious leaders

  700. when they saw

  701. the boldness

  702. of Peter and John

  703. and they perceived

  704. that they were

  705. uneducated

  706. common men

  707. they were astonished

  708. and they recognized

  709. that they had been

  710. with Jesus.

  711. Friends,

  712. I wonder

  713. for how many of us

  714. that would be

  715. the distinctive

  716. defining mark

  717. of our lives.

  718. For how many people

  719. when people think of us

  720. the defining mark

  721. of our life

  722. is not our education

  723. it's not how well

  724. we've done in our careers

  725. it's not where we live

  726. or our dresses

  727. it's not our natural

  728. brilliance

  729. or our gifting

  730. that the distinctive

  731. feature of our lives

  732. is that we are those

  733. who though ordinary

  734. are those who

  735. there's a marked

  736. consistency

  737. we're those

  738. who've been with Jesus.

  739. Jesus calls us

  740. as followers of Jesus

  741. to come and be with Him

  742. to live

  743. in communion with Him

  744. day by day

  745. hour by hour.

  746. There's a very famous

  747. example of this

  748. in the 17th century

  749. there was a man

  750. by the name of

  751. Nicholas Hermann

  752. he was a Parisian

  753. a Frenchman

  754. he joined the army

  755. as a young man

  756. and he fought

  757. in a number of battles

  758. he was captured

  759. as a spy

  760. at one stage

  761. and released

  762. he fought some more battles

  763. he got badly injured

  764. and so he was dismissed

  765. from the French army

  766. and he went to go work

  767. as a footman

  768. a valet

  769. a servant

  770. in a big aristocrat's house

  771. but he wasn't very good

  772. at that

  773. and so he was dismissed

  774. from that

  775. after a couple of years

  776. and eventually decides

  777. I'm going to go work

  778. in a monastery

  779. and so he signs up

  780. in this monastery

  781. and he becomes

  782. a lay monk

  783. which means he's a monk

  784. but he's not

  785. an ordained monk

  786. he can't participate

  787. in many of the things

  788. and so he's assigned

  789. the job

  790. as to being cook

  791. in the kitchen

  792. in the monastery

  793. he takes this name

  794. Brother Lawrence

  795. he's now known

  796. famously as

  797. Brother Lawrence

  798. and so Brother Lawrence

  799. is the chef

  800. in the monastery

  801. but one of the things

  802. that Brother Lawrence does

  803. is he says

  804. maybe I can't preach

  805. maybe I can't do other things

  806. but one thing I can do

  807. is I can live my life

  808. consistency

  809. in the presence of Jesus

  810. he called it

  811. practicing the presence of God

  812. and so this is what he says

  813. this is one of his famous quotes

  814. he says

  815. the time of business

  816. does not differ

  817. for me

  818. or with me

  819. from the time of prayer

  820. in the noise

  821. and the clatter

  822. of my kitchen

  823. while several persons

  824. are at the same time

  825. calling for different things

  826. I possess God

  827. in as great tranquility

  828. as if I were knees

  829. before the blessed sacraments

  830. my friends

  831. as a Catholic monk

  832. in the 17th century

  833. that's an incredible thing

  834. to say

  835. you know how

  836. highly valid

  837. the sacrament was

  838. the body

  839. and the blood of Jesus

  840. the communion

  841. was considered

  842. to be the actual body

  843. and the blood of Jesus

  844. and he has this man

  845. who says

  846. as I'm going about

  847. my day to day duties

  848. I'm as aware

  849. of the presence of God

  850. and the closeness of Jesus

  851. as if I'm on my knees

  852. in the cathedral

  853. at the time of worship

  854. when Jesus Christ

  855. was on the way

  856. to the cross

  857. in John's gospel

  858. he's giving his disciples

  859. one of his final teachings

  860. and he's teaching them

  861. about the fact

  862. that he's going to die

  863. on the cross

  864. after he's going to

  865. ascend to heaven

  866. and he says

  867. I'm going to leave you

  868. but I won't leave you

  869. as orphans

  870. I'm going to send

  871. the Holy Spirit

  872. to be with you

  873. so John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  874. and John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  875. are these amazing teachings

  876. about the person

  877. and the work

  878. of the Holy Spirit

  879. wonderful

  880. wonderful

  881. rich teachings

  882. but standing in between

  883. John 14

  884. and John 16

  885. is this incredible teaching

  886. very famous teaching

  887. of John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  888. look at what Jesus

  889. says here

  890. Jesus says this

  891. remain in me

  892. even as I remained

  893. in you

  894. I'm like a vine

  895. and you are like branches

  896. whoever remains in me

  897. and I am him

  898. they will bear much fruit

  899. but apart from me

  900. you can do nothing

  901. if anyone does not

  902. remain in me

  903. he's like a branch

  904. that is thrown away

  905. and withers

  906. it does

  907. but if you remain in me

  908. and my words remain in you

  909. ask whatever you wish

  910. and it will be done for you

  911. that's an incredible promise

  912. right

  913. by this

  914. my father is honored

  915. is glorified

  916. that you bear much fruit

  917. and so prove

  918. to be my disciples

  919. my apprentices

  920. my tilmudim

  921. as the father

  922. has loved me

  923. so I have loved you

  924. friends just think about that

  925. for a second

  926. Jesus the son of God

  927. says as the father

  928. has loved me

  929. so have I

  930. loved you

  931. with all your failures

  932. with all your sin

  933. with all your brokenness

  934. with all the things

  935. that you get wrong

  936. as the father

  937. has loved me

  938. so I have loved you

  939. oh my goodness

  940. what an incredible promise

  941. Jesus

  942. remain in my love

  943. stay in my love

  944. dwell in my love

  945. as Chris has told us before

  946. don't air be and be

  947. in my love

  948. dwell there

  949. abide there

  950. remain there

  951. put down your roots

  952. live in this place

  953. in constant

  954. communion

  955. in fellowship

  956. with me

  957. let my love

  958. and my grace

  959. wash over you

  960. day by day

  961. Andrew Murray

  962. was the great

  963. Scottish preacher

  964. commenting on this

  965. he says this

  966. when Jesus said

  967. come to me

  968. what he meant was

  969. come

  970. and remain

  971. in me

  972. Jesus did not

  973. call you

  974. to refresh you

  975. for a few short

  976. hours

  977. after your conversion

  978. with the joy

  979. of his love

  980. and then send you

  981. out to wander

  982. alone

  983. no he destined you

  984. for something greater

  985. than just a short

  986. lived blessedness

  987. rather he called us

  988. to

  989. a short time

  990. to be enjoyed

  991. only in times

  992. a special earnestness

  993. or prayer

  994. and then pass away

  995. that's not what

  996. Jesus called us to

  997. as if we had to

  998. as we return

  999. to the ordinary

  1000. duties of life

  1001. no friends

  1002. Jesus called you

  1003. to abide in him

  1004. to remain with him

  1005. where your whole life

  1006. and every moment

1007. of it might be spent

  1008. with him

  1009. and in him

  1010. when Jesus calls us

  1011. to follow him

  1012. he means for us

  1013. to bring our lives

  1014. to be deeply

  1015. infused with him

  1016. like a branch

  1017. is infused

  1018. into a tree

1019. so that day by day

  1020. hour by hour

  1021. as you're at work

  1022. and at home

  1023. and as you're going

  1024. like the ordinary

  1025. duties of life

  1026. there in that place

  1027. we get to experience

  1028. the closeness

  1029. and the presence

  1030. and the wonder

  1031. of Jesus

  1032. this is what Jesus

  1033. meant when he said

  1034. remain in me

  1035. come and follow me

  1036. Jesus calls his followers

  1037. to be with him

  1038. to remain in him

  1039. Dallas Willard

  1040. said this

  1041. are we disciples

  1042. of Jesus

  1043. or merely Christians

  1044. by some modern notion

  1045. of what that means

  1046. Christians do devotions

  1047. that's good

  1048. but do we live

  1049. a life of devotion

  1050. Christians pray

  1051. that's good

  1052. we most certainly

  1053. should pray

  1054. but do we know

1055. how to have a life

  1056. of prayer

  1057. friends Jesus calls us

  1058. to come and live

  1059. with him

  1060. to be with him

  1061. when Claire and I

  1062. first got married

  1063. living in Cape Town

  1064. South Africa

  1065. there was a very

  1066. clever system

  1067. where the health

  1068. insurance

  1069. and the life

  1070. insurance company

  1071. that we were

  1072. signed up to

  1073. said that if you

  1074. attend the gym

  1075. a certain number

  1076. of times each month

  1077. they would pay

  1078. 90% of your gym

  1079. fees

  1080. your subscription fees

  1081. and also your health

  1082. and life insurance

  1083. premiums would drop

  1084. and it's a clever

  1085. business model

  1086. because they say

1087. if we can keep you

  1088. healthy and fit

  1089. that'll be cheaper

  1090. for us than paying

  1091. your medical bills

  1092. and so they want

  1093. to encourage everyone

1094. to go to the gym

  1095. regularly

  1096. and as everybody

  1097. pretty quickly

  1098. worked out

  1099. in the first year

  1100. you go to gym

  1101. you do your

  1102. five or six

  1103. or eight times

1104. a month in the gym

  1105. but after a while

  1106. you start getting

  1107. a little lazy

  1108. and you don't go

  1109. that often

  1110. and so everyone

  1111. in the last few

  1112. days of the month

  1113. drives up the gym

  1114. walks into the gym

  1115. taps the membership

  1116. card

  1117. and walks out again

  1118. and the next day

1119. would drive up the gym

  1120. taps the membership

  1121. card

  1122. and walks out again

  1123. just to go

  1124. and to maintain

  1125. their membership

  1126. friends

  1127. Jesus doesn't

  1128. call us

  1129. Christianity

  1130. is not about

  1131. going and tapping

  1132. your membership

  1133. card to maintain

  1134. your membership

  1135. Jesus calls us

  1136. to live a life

  1137. of walking

  1138. with him

  1139. day by day

  1140. when Jesus calls

  1141. people from

  1142. first century fishermen

  1143. to 17th century

  1144. soldiers

  1145. to 21st century

  1146. Hong Kongers

  1147. to follow him

  1148. Jesus is not

  1149. asking us

  1150. to add him

  1151. to our really

  1152. busy schedule

  1153. of life

  1154. Jesus is not

  1155. asking to be

  1156. an addendum

  1157. to squeeze

  1158. him into

  1159. our lives

  1160. he's calling us

  1161. to a life of

  1162. constant communion

  1163. with him

  1164. to live aware

  1165. of his presence

  1166. to be secure

  1167. in his grace

  1168. to be anchored

  1169. in his love

  1170. to center our lives

  1171. around who he is

  1172. and so what that

  1173. means is

  1174. whether you're

  1175. leading worship

  1176. at our family

  1177. worship service

  1178. like Alan

  1179. led us so well

  1180. this morning

  1181. whether you're

  1182. serving food

  1183. to families

  1184. that don't have

  1185. much food

  1186. in a part of

  1187. Hong Kong

  1188. whether you're

  1189. on the MTR

1190. on the way to work

  1191. or you're doing

  1192. classes online

  1193. at HKU

  1194. or some university

  1195. friends

  1196. whether you're

  1197. playing basketball

  1198. with friends

  1199. in the neighborhood

  1200. or whether you're

  1201. going to a board

  1202. meeting

  1203. or whether you're

  1204. reading documents

  1205. in your legal

  1206. chambers

  1207. friends

  1208. whether you're

  1209. pitching for

  1210. new business

  1211. or asking

  1212. for seed capital

  1213. whether you're

  1214. changing your

  1215. children's diapers

  1216. at night

  1217. friends

  1218. whether you're

  1219. catching up

  1220. with a friend

  1221. in a coffee

  1222. shop

  1223. or you're

  1224. visiting family

  1225. over new

  1226. year's reunion

  1227. meals

  1228. friends

  1229. whether you're

  1230. having dinner

  1231. with your family

  1232. or you're

  1233. tucking your

  1234. children in

  1235. at night

  1236. in that very

  1237. place

  1238. Jesus

  1239. wants us

  1240. to be walking

  1241. with him

  1242. to be aware

  1243. of his presence

  1244. to be drawing

  1245. on his grace

  1246. to be anchored

  1247. in his love

  1248. Jesus wants us

  1249. to know

  1250. that those places

  1251. are no less

  1252. sacred

  1253. no less

  1254. important

  1255. no less

  1256. an opportunity

  1257. to encounter

  1258. his grace

  1259. and to experience

  1260. the reality

  1261. of Christ

  1262. in our lives

  1263. than whether

  1264. we're in CG

  1265. or prayer meeting

  1266. or some

  1267. regular activity

  1268. because for Jesus

  1269. when he said

  1270. follow me

  1271. he designed

  1272. that all of life

  1273. to be lived

  1274. quorum Deo

  1275. in the very

  1276. presence

  1277. of God

  1278. listen to how

  1279. King David

  1280. put it

  1281. David said

  1282. this is Psalm

  1283. 16

  1284. I have set

  1285. the Lord

  1286. always before

  1287. me

  1288. when I'm on

  1289. the MTR

  1290. when I'm at

  1291. school

  1292. when I'm with

  1293. my children

  1294. when I'm on

  1295. a date

  1296. I've set the

  1297. Lord always

  1298. before me

  1299. God is at

  1300. my right hand

  1301. I will not

  1302. be shaken

  1303. my heart

  1304. is glad

  1305. my whole

  1306. being rejoices

  1307. my flesh

  1308. dwells secure

  1309. you God

  1310. make known

  1311. to me

  1312. the paths

  1313. of life

  1314. in your

  1315. presence

  1316. there is

  1317. fullness

  1318. of joy

  1319. at your

  1320. right hand

  1321. are pleasures

  1322. forevermore

  1323. friends

  1324. for so many

  1325. people

  1326. not understanding

  1327. that the

  1328. call of Jesus

  1329. to come

  1330. and be his

  1331. follower

  1332. is a call

  1333. to be with

  1334. him

  1335. to remain

  1336. in him

  1337. to remain

  1338. in his love

  1339. means that

  1340. for many

  1341. people

  1342. being a

  1343. follower

  1344. of Jesus

  1345. gets reduced

  1346. to

  1347. religious

  1348. duties

  1349. attending

  1350. church

  1351. on Sunday

  1352. reading

  1353. our

  1354. bible

  1355. once

  1356. or twice

  1357. a week

  1358. friends

  1359. for many

  1360. people

  1361. following

  1362. Jesus

  1363. gets reduced

  1364. to tapping

  1365. our membership

  1366. card

  1367. once a week

  1368. in order

  1369. to retain

  1370. our membership

  1371. but friends

  1372. that's about

  1373. as far

  1374. away

  1375. from

  1376. following

  1377. Jesus

  1378. as any

  1379. other

  1380. pagan

  1381. religion

  1382. you can

  1383. call that

  1384. uber

  1385. uber

  1386. religion

  1387. you can

  1388. call it

  1389. anything

  1390. you want

  1391. but don't

  1392. call it

  1393. christianity

  1394. don't

  1395. call it

  1396. the gospel

  1397. because that

  1398. has got

  1399. nothing to

  1400. do with

  1401. following

  1402. Jesus

  1403. new testament

  1404. christianity

  1405. knows nothing

  1406. of once a

  1407. week going

  1408. and tapping

  1409. our membership

  1410. card to

  1411. retain our

  1412. membership

  1413. new testament

  1414. christianity

  1415. is a life

  1416. that's orientated

  1417. around the

  1418. beauty and the

  1419. wonder of who

  1420. Jesus is

  1421. living

  1422. remaining in

  1423. him

  1424. abiding

  1425. with him

  1426. following him

  1427. walking

  1428. with him

  1429. Jesus

  1430. never called

  1431. anyone to

  1432. simply tap

  1433. their membership

  1434. card

  1435. he called

  1436. us to

  1437. be with

  1438. him

  1439. to follow

  1440. him

  1441. and so

  1442. even the

  1443. last couple

  1444. of weeks

  1445. as we've

  1446. looked at

  1447. stuff like

  1448. gospel

  1449. orthodoxy

  1450. all that

  1451. stuff

  1452. if that's

  1453. just a

  1454. theory

  1455. is nothing

  1456. if it

  1457. doesn't

  1458. lead us

  1459. to

  1460. relationship

  1461. with

  1462. christ

  1463. our

  1464. justification

  1465. is not

  1466. so that

  1467. we can

  1468. pass

  1469. some

  1470. theology

  1471. exam

  1472. justification

  1473. by grace

  1474. alone

  1475. is that

  1476. we can

  1477. walk with

  1478. christ

  1479. and know

  1480. him

  1481. adoption

  1482. doesn't

  1483. just

  1484. mean

  1485. yes

  1486. i know

  1487. that

  1488. i'm

  1489. god's

  1490. son

  1491. it

  1492. means

  1493. we get

  1494. to

  1495. experience

  1496. the

  1497. reality

  1498. of god's

  1499. love

  1500. in our

  1501. life

  1502. redemption

  1503. means

  1504. that we

  1505. get to

  1506. be

  1507. redeemed

  1508. out of

  1509. our

  1510. old

  1511. life

  1512. and walk

  1513. with

  1514. jesus

  1515. in the

  1516. reality

  1517. of life

  1518. 24 7

  1519. 7 days

  1520. a week

  1521. friends

  1522. gospel

  1523. orthodoxy

  1524. is nothing

  1525. if it

  1526. doesn't

  1527. lead you

  1528. to

  1529. loving

  1530. and

  1531. trusting

  1532. and

  1533. obeying

  1534. and

  1535. walking

  1536. with

  1537. jesus

  1538. that's

  1539. what

  1540. christianity

  1541. is about

  1542. that's

  1543. what the

  1544. god is

  1545. the

  1546. gospel

  1547. and

  1548. what he

  1549. said

  1550. is that

  1551. justification

  1552. is true

  1553. but it's

  1554. going to

  1555. lead us

  1556. to

  1557. relationship

  1558. with

  1559. jesus

  1560. the

  1561. gospel

  1562. is not

  1563. just a

  1564. theory

  1565. it's

  1566. a

  1567. person

  1568. it's

  1569. the

  1570. person

  1571. of

  1572. the

  1573. lord

  1574. jesus

  1575. christ

  1576. it's

  1577. the

  1578. person

  1579. of

  1580. jesus

  1581. who's

  1582. full

  1583. of

  1584. grace

  1585. and

  1586. full

  1587. of

  1588. love

  1589. the

  1590. one

  1591. who

  1592. made

  1593. the

  1594. starry

  1595. hosts

  1596. and

  1597. everything

  1598. calling

  1599. us

  1600. to

  1601. walk

  1602. with

  1603. him

  1604. friends

  1605. are you

  1606. walking

  1607. with

  1608. jesus

  1609. are you

  1610. walking

  1611. with

  1612. jesus

  1613. friends

  1614. if your

  1615. christianity

  1616. is simply

  1617. a matter

  1618. of going

  1619. through

  1620. the

  1621. motions

  1622. you

  1623. might

  1624. not

  1625. be

  1626. a

  1627. follower

  1628. of

  1629. jesus

  1630. at

  1631. all

  1632. jesus

  1633. didn't

  1634. call us

  1635. to go

  1636. through

  1637. the

  1638. motions

  1639. he

  1640. called

  1641. us

  1642. to

  1643. come

  1644. and

  1645. be

  1646. with

  1647. him

  1648. to

  1649. be

  1650. with

  1651. him

  1652. now

  1653. as

  1654. we

  1655. come

  1656. to

  1657. a

  1658. close

  1659. what

  1660. does

  1661. that

  1662. actually

  1663. mean

  1664. so

  1665. what

  1666. does

  1667. this

  1668. actually

  1669. mean

  1670. for

  1671. our

  1672. lives

  1673. what

  1674. should

  1675. we

  1676. do

  1677. one

  1678. of

  1679. us

  1680. two

  1681. very

  1682. simple

  1683. things

  1684. very

  1685. very

  1686. simple

  1687. the

  1688. first

  1689. one

  1690. is

  1691. this

  1692. seek

  1693. to

  1694. center

  1695. your

  1696. life

  1697. on

  1698. jesus

  1699. intentionally

  1700. when

  1701. we

  1702. read

  1703. the

  1704. gospels

  1705. one

  1706. of

  1707. the

  1708. things

  1709. that's

  1710. amazing

  1711. to

  1712. see

  1713. is

  1714. that

  1715. jesus

  1716. christ

  1717. god's

  1718. own

  1719. son

  1720. the

  1721. second

  1722. person

  1723. of

  1724. the

  1725. trinity

  1726. constantly

  1727. withdrew

  1728. himself

  1729. from

  1730. the

  1731. ordinary

  1732. duties

  1733. of

  1734. life

  1735. to

  1736. spend

  1737. time

  1738. and

  1739. pray

  1740. and

  1741. that's

  1742. an

  1743. incredible

  1744. thing

  1745. you'd

  1746. think

  1747. if

  1748. jesus

  1749. is

  1750. god

  1751. why

  1752. does

  1753. he

  1754. need

  1755. to

  1756. pray

  1757. but

  1758. jesus

  1759. regularly

  1760. withdrew

  1761. from

  1762. the

  1763. busyness

  1764. of

  1765. life

  1766. to

  1767. times

  1768. of

  1769. silence

  1770. solitude

  1771. sabbath

  1772. to

  1773. spend

  1774. time

  1775. with

  1776. his

  1777. father

  1778. and

  1779. pray

  1780. friends

  1781. if

  1782. jesus

  1783. needed

  1784. to

  1785. withdraw

  1786. to

  1787. spend

  1788. time

  1789. and

  1790. pray

  1791. you

  1792. better

  1793. believe

  1794. you

  1795. and

  1796. i

  1797. do

  1798. as

  1799. well

  1800. look at

  1801. some of

  1802. these

  1803. scriptures

  1804. mark

  1805. chapter

  1806. one

  1807. after

  1808. busy

  1809. day

  1810. of

  1811. ministry

  1812. says

  1813. this

  1814. rising

  1815. very

  1816. early

  1817. in

  1818. the

  1819. morning

  1820. while

  1821. it

  1822. was

  1823. still

  1824. dark

  1825. he

  1826. departed

  1827. and

  1828. went

  1829. out

  1830. to

  1831. a

  1832. desolate

  1833. place

  1834. and

  1835. there

  1836. he

  1837. spent

  1838. time

  1839. and

  1840. pray

  1841. after

  1842. busy

  1843. day

  1844. of

  1845. ministering

  1846. healing

  1847. a bunch

  1848. of

  1849. people

  1850. even

  1851. more

  1852. the

  1853. report

  1854. about

  1855. him

  1856. went

  1857. abroad

  1858. and

  1859. great

  1860. crowds

  1861. gathered

  1862. to

  1863. hear

  1864. him

  1865. and

  1866. to

  1867. be

  1868. healed

  1869. of

  1870. the

  1871. infirmities

  1872. the

  1873. crowds

  1874. are

  1875. gathering

  1876. around

  1877. Jesus

  1878. pressing

  1879. him

  1880. there's

  1881. so

  1882. much

  1883. stuff

  1884. to

  1885. do

  1886. there's

  1887. not

  1888. enough

  1889. hours

  1890. in

  1891. the

  1892. day

  1893. so

  1894. what

  1895. does

  1896. Jesus

  1897. do

  1898. he

  1899. would

  1900. withdraw

  1901. to

  1902. a

  1903. desert

  1904. place

  1905. and

  1906. spend

  1907. time

  1908. in

  1909. prayer

  1910. Luke

  1911. 6

  1912. says

  1913. the

  1914. same

  1915. thing

  1916. he

  1917. says

  1918. in

  1919. those

  1920. days

  1921. he

  1922. went

  1923. out

  1924. to

  1925. the

  1926. mountain

  1927. to

  1928. pray

  1929. all

  1930. night

  1931. he

  1932. continues

  1933. in

  1934. prayer

  1935. to

  1936. God

  1937. the

  1938. father

  1939. and

  1940. when

  1941. the

  1942. day

  1943. comes

  1944. he

  1945. then

  1946. calls

  1947. his

  1948. disciples

  1949. and

  1950. he

  1951. chooses

  1952. from

  1953. them

  1954. twelve

  1955. that

  1956. he

  1957. names

  1958. apostles

  1959. before

  1960. Jesus

  1961. called

  1962. the

  1963. apostles

  1964. he

  1965. spends

  1966. all

  1967. night

  1968. in

  1969. prayer

  1970. friends

  1971. can I

  1972. ask

  1973. you

  1974. are

  1975. you

  1976. spending

  1977. your

  1978. day

  1979. are

  1980. you

  1981. starting

  1982. off

  1983. your

  1984. day

  1985. in

  1986. God's

  1987. words

  1988. seeking

  1989. his

  1990. face

  1991. and

  1992. in

  1993. prayer

  1994. are

  1995. you

  1996. starting

  1997. out

  1998. the

  1999. day

  2000. reflecting

  2001. meditating

  2002. reading

  2003. God's

  2004. word

  2005. but most

  2006. importantly

  2007. are you

  2008. encountering

  2009. God

  2010. in

  2011. his

  2012. word

  2013. friends

  2014. are you

  2015. coming

  2016. to

  2017. a

  2018. passage

  2019. and

  2020. saying

  2021. God

  2022. what

  2023. are you

  2024. saying

  2025. to

  2026. me

  2027. here

  2028. what

  2029. does

  2030. this

  2031. teach

  2032. me

  2033. about

  2034. who

  2035. Jesus

  2036. is

  2037. what

  2038. does

  2039. this

  2040. teach

  2041. me

  2042. about

  2043. God's

  2044. profound

  2045. love

  2046. for me

  2047. in

  2048. the

  2049. gospel

  2050. how

  2051. does

  2052. this

  2053. secure

  2054. me

  2055. anchor

  2056. me

  2057. in

  2058. his

  2059. love

  2060. friends

  2061. if

  2062. we

  2063. want

  2064. to

  2065. follow

  2066. Jesus

  2067. we

  2068. have

  2069. to

  2070. intentionally

  2071. seek

  2072. our

  2073. times

  2074. when

  2075. we

  2076. set

  2077. aside

  2078. portions

  2079. of

  2080. the

  2081. day

  2082. to

  2083. see

  2084. Christ's

  2085. face

  2086. and

  2087. to

  2088. be

  2089. with

  2090. him

  2091. second

  2092. thing

  2093. is

  2094. this

  2095. seek

  2096. to

  2097. center

  2098. your

  2099. life

  2100. on

  2101. Jesus

  2102. in

  2103. all

  2104. of

  2105. life

  2106. there's

  2107. intentionality

  2108. certain

  2109. times

  2110. of the

  2111. day

  2112. early

  2113. in

  2114. the

  2115. morning

  2116. is

  2117. the

  2118. best

  2119. set

  2120. aside

  2121. 15

  2122. minutes

  2123. half

  2124. an

  2125. hour

  2126. to

  2127. seek

  2128. God's

  2129. face

  2130. and

  2131. center

  2132. your

  2133. life

  2134. on

  2135. him

  2136. but

  2137. then

  2138. at

  2139. the

  2140. same

  2141. time

  2142. live

  2143. all

  2144. of

  2145. life

  2146. in

  2147. the

  2148. presence

  2149. of

  2150. Jesus

  2151. throughout

  2152. the

  2153. gospel

  2154. Jesus

  2155. is

  2156. constantly

  2157. getting

  2158. in trouble

  2159. with

  2160. religious

  2161. leaders

  2162. because

  2163. he

  2164. doesn't

  2165. behave

  2166. like

  2167. the

  2168. regular

  2169. rabbis

  2170. and

  2171. they

  2172. always

  2173. saying

  2174. where

  2175. do

  2176. you

  2177. get

  2178. this

  2179. authority

  2180. from

  2181. how

  2182. can

  2183. you

  2184. say

  2185. those

  2186. things

  2187. and

  2188. Jesus

  2189. often

  2190. says

  2191. this

  2192. he

  2193. says

  2194. I

  2195. only

  2196. do

  2197. what

  2198. my

  2199. father

  2200. has

  2201. told

  2202. me

  2203. to

  2204. do

  2205. I

  2206. speak

  2207. not

  2208. my

  2209. own

  2210. authority

  2211. but

  2212. I

  2213. only

  2214. say

  2215. what

  2216. the

  2217. father

  2218. has

  2219. asked

  2220. me

  2221. yes

  2222. lord

  2223. and

  2224. then

  2225. speak

  2226. Jesus

  2227. doesn't

  2228. he

  2229. is

  2230. not

  2231. mechanical

  2232. or

  2233. robotic

  2234. about

  2235. it

  2236. Jesus

  2237. out

  2238. of

  2239. the

  2241. of

  2242. his

  2243. relationship

  2244. with

  2245. the

  2247. he

  2248. lives

  2249. all

  2250. of

  2251. his

  2252. life

  2253. just

  2254. saying

  2255. what

  2256. the

  2258. wants

  2259. Jesus

  2419. we

  2421. have

  2422. silence

  2474. at

  2475. certain

  2476. times

  2477. of the

  2479. but

  2480. throughout

  2482. I

  2483. want to

  2484. end

  2485. with

  2486. two

  2487. very

  2488. brief

  2489. stories

  2490. as a

  2491. staff

  2492. team

  2493. we've

  2494. been

  2495. recently

  2496. reading

  2497. a

  2498. book

  2499. called

  2500. gospel

  2501. fluency

  2502. by

  2503. Jeff

  2504. van der

  2505. stelt

  2506. and

  2507. he

  2508. tells

  2509. this

  2510. amazing

  2511. story

  2512. in

  2513. that

  2514. book

  2515. one

  2516. day

  2517. he

  2518. was

  2519. flying

  2520. somewhere

  2521. he was

  2522. leaving

  2523. Seattle

  2524. to go

  2525. to

  2526. fly

  2527. to

  2528. another

  2529. part

  2530. of

  2531. the

  2532. US

  2533. and

  2534. every

  2535. time

  2536. he

  2537. boards

  2538. a

  2539. plane

  2540. he

  2541. just

  2542. prays

  2543. a

  2544. simple

  2545. prayer

  2546. says

  2547. Jesus

  2548. I

  2549. give

  2550. you

  2551. the

  2552. next

  2553. few

  2554. hours

  2555. if

  2556. you

  2557. want

  2558. me

  2559. to

  2560. just

  2561. rest

  2562. if

  2563. you

  2564. want

  2565. me

  2566. to

  2567. work

  2568. or

  2569. you

  2570. want

  2571. me

  2572. to

  2573. have

  2574. a

  2575. conversation

  2576. with

  2577. the

  2578. person

  2579. next

  2580. dressed

  2581. very

  2582. prim

  2583. and

  2584. proper

  2585. and

  2586. she

  2587. seemed

  2588. very

  2589. pleasant

  2590. and

  2591. so

  2592. he

  2593. says

  2594. to

  2595. her

  2596. are

  2597. you

  2598. leaving

  2599. home

  2600. or

  2601. are

  2602. you

  2603. coming

  2604. back

  2605. home

  2606. on

  2607. this

  2608. flight

  2609. and

  2610. she

  2611. replies

  2612. and

  2613. says

  2614. well

  2615. both

  2616. I

  2617. guess

  2618. he

  2619. says

  2620. oh

  2621. what

  2622. do

  2623. you

  2624. mean

  2625. she

  2626. says

  2627. I

  2628. live

  2629. in

  2630. Seattle

  2631. but

  2632. my

  2633. family

  2634. was

  2635. moving

  2636. to

  2637. this

  2638. new

  2639. part

  2640. of

  2641. the

  2642. country

  2643. we

  2644. were

  2645. meant

  2646. to

  2647. live

  2648. there

  2649. and

  2650. she

  2651. says

  2652. I'm

  2653. going

  2654. to

  2655. what

  2656. is

  2657. supposed

  2658. to

  2659. be

  2660. my

  2661. new

  2662. home

  2663. my

  2664. husband

  2665. and

  2666. my

  2667. boys

  2668. are

  2669. waiting

  2670. for

  2671. me

  2672. there

  2673. but

  2674. it's

  2675. a

  2676. complicated

  2677. story

  2678. and

  2679. Jeff

  2680. says

  2681. he

  2682. sits

  2683. in

  2684. the

  2685. seat

  2686. and

  2687. just

  2688. quietly

  2689. prays

  2690. his

  2691. prayers

  2692. his

  2693. Holy

  2694. Spirit

  2695. helped

  2696. me

  2697. to

  2698. listen

  2699. well

  2700. he

  2701. says

  2702. oh

  2703. I'm

  2704. sorry

  2705. to

  2706. hear

  2707. that

  2708. and

  2709. she

  2710. says

  2711. yeah

  2712. well

  2713. it's

  2714. a

  2715. long

  2716. story

  2717. my

  2718. family

  2719. moved

  2720. ahead

  2721. of

  2722. me

  2723. but

  2724. I

  2725. had to

  2726. stay

  2727. behind

  2728. in

  2729. Seattle

  2730. for

  2731. an

  2732. extra

  2733. year

  2734. and

  2735. in

  2736. that

  2737. year

  2738. things

  2739. happened

  2740. I

  2741. developed

  2742. another

  2743. relationship

  2744. and

  2745. I

  2746. ended

  2747. up

  2748. having

  2749. an

  2750. affair

  2751. and

  2752. my

  2753. husband

  2754. was

  2755. so

  2756. angry

  2757. he

  2758. determined

  2759. to

  2760. destroy

  2761. my

  2762. life

  2763. and

  2764. so

  2765. he

  2766. has

  2767. absolutely

  2768. destroyed

  2769. my

  2770. reputation

  2771. on

  2772. Facebook

  2773. and

  2774. she

  2775. says

  2776. I'm

  2777. going

  2778. out

  2779. to

  2780. Seattle

  2781. to

  2782. see

  2783. my

  2784. boys

  2785. and

  2786. sign

  2787. the

  2788. divorce

  2789. papers

  2790. and

  2791. then

  2792. I guess

  2793. I'm

  2794. coming

  2795. back

  2796. alone

  2797. and

  2798. Jeff

  2799. just

  2800. listens

  2801. and

  2802. the

  2803. whole

  2804. time

  2805. he's

  2806. just

  2807. praying

  2808. and

  2809. eventually

  2810. after

  2811. about

  2812. an

  2813. hour

  2814. this

  2815. lady

  2816. says

  2817. to

  2818. him

  2819. wow

  2820. you're

  2821. a

  2822. really

  2823. nice

  2824. guy

  2825. you've

  2826. been

  2827. listening

  2828. to

  2829. me

  2830. going

  2831. on

  2832. and

  2833. on

  2834. about

  2835. my

  2836. life

  2837. and

  2838. I

  2839. haven't

  2840. asked

  2841. you

  2842. any

  2843. questions

  2844. who

  2845. are

  2846. you

  2847. and

  2848. Jeff

  2849. turns

  2850. to her

  2851. and

  2852. says

  2853. this

  2854. he

  2855. says

  2856. I

  2857. explained

  2858. to

  2859. her

  2860. who

  2861. I

  2862. was

  2863. but

  2864. most

  2865. importantly

  2866. who

  2867. I

  2868. knew

  2869. I

  2870. let

  2871. her

  2872. know

  2873. that

  2874. I

  2875. know

  2876. and

  2877. I

  2878. love

  2879. Jesus

  2880. and

  2881. that

  2882. Jesus

  2883. knows

  2884. her

  2885. and

  2886. loves

  2887. her

  2888. too

  2889. and

  2890. that

  2891. Jesus

  2892. cared

  2893. for

  2894. her

  2895. and

  2896. was

  2897. listening

  2898. to

  2899. her

  2900. story

  2901. sitting

  2902. in

  2903. the

  2904. airplane

  2905. all

  2906. it

  2907. took

  2908. was

  2909. a

  2910. man

  2911. just

  2912. to

  2913. say

  2914. Jesus

  2915. I'm

  2916. here

  2917. I'm

  2918. available

  2919. Holy

  2920. Spirit

  2921. help

  2922. me

  2923. to

  2924. listen

  2925. well

  2926. and

  2927. in

  2928. that

  2929. moment

  2930. has

  2931. an

  2932. encounter

  2933. with

  2934. God

  2935. and

  2936. ministers

  2937. to

  2938. this

  2939. lady

  2940. who

  2941. needed

  2942. him

  2943. but

  2944. more

  2945. than

  2946. that

  2947. needed

  2948. Jesus

  2949. a

  2950. few

  2951. weeks

  2952. ago

  2953. I

  2954. was

  2955. sitting

  2956. in

  2957. a

  2958. coffee

  2959. shop

  2960. just

  2961. down

  2962. the

  2963. road

  2964. having

  2965. coffee

  2966. with

  2967. another

  2968. pastor

  2969. a

  2970. new

  2971. friend

  2972. of

  2973. mine

  2974. and

  2975. we're

  2976. talking

  2977. about

  2978. church

  2979. planting

  2980. and

  2981. churches

  2982. in

  2983. Hong

  2984. Kong

  2985. and

  2986. exciting

  2987. stuff

  2988. that

  2989. could

  2990. be

  2991. happening

  2992. into

  2993. the

  2994. future

  2995. and

  2996. the

  2997. whole

  2998. time

  2999. I'm

  3000. talking

  3001. to

  3002. my

  3003. friend

  3004. I'm

  3005. aware

  3006. of

  3007. this

  3008. lady

  3009. that's

  3010. sitting

  3011. next

  3012. to

  3013. me

  3014. I'm

  3015. talking

  3016. with

  3017. Seth

  3018. but

  3019. the

  3020. whole

  3021. time

  3022. I'm

  3023. just

  3024. aware

  3025. of

  3026. her

  3027. and

  3028. I'm

  3029. busy

  3030. praying

  3031. I'm

  3032. talking

  3033. with

  3034. Seth

  3035. but

  3036. quietly

  3037. I'm

  3038. praying

  3039. I'm

  3040. saying

  3041. God

  3042. what are

  3043. you

  3044. saying

  3045. what's

  3046. going

  3047. on

  3048. why

  3049. have

  3050. you

  3051. brought

  3052. this

  3053. person

  3054. to

  3055. my

  3056. attention

  3057. at

  3058. the

  3059. end

  3060. of

  3061. time

  3062. with

  3063. my

  3064. conversation

  3065. with

  3066. Seth

  3067. I say

  3068. hey

  3069. great

  3070. to

  3071. see

  3072. you

  3073. let's

  3074. catch

  3075. up

  3076. soon

  3077. I'm

  3078. going

  3079. to

  3080. stay

  3081. here

  3082. for

  3083. a

  3084. few

  3085. more

  3086. minutes

  3087. and

  3088. I

  3089. stay

  3090. behind

  3091. and

  3092. I

  3093. turn

  3094. to

  3095. this

  3096. lady

  3097. and

  3098. I

  3099. say

  3100. hey

  3101. I

  3102. know

  3103. this

  3104. is

  3105. unusual

  3106. my

  3107. name

  3108. is

  3109. Kevin

  3110. I

  3111. just

  3112. want

  3113. you

  3114. to

  3115. know

  3116. that

  3117. I

  3118. am

  3119. a

  3120. follower

  3121. of

  3122. Jesus

  3123. and

  3124. I

  3125. really

  3126. feel

  3127. like

  3128. Jesus

  3129. wants

  3130. you

  3131. to

  3132. know

  3133. that

  3134. he

  3135. knows

  3136. about

  3137. you

  3138. he

  3139. loves

  3140. you

  3141. and

  3142. he

  3143. wants

  3144. you

  3145. to

  3146. come

  3147. to

  3148. know

  3149. him

  3150. and

  3151. the

  3152. lady

  3153. was

  3154. a

  3155. little

  3156. confused

  3157. at

  3158. a

  3159. simple

  3160. time

  3161. of

  3162. sitting

  3163. in

  3164. a

  3165. coffee

  3166. shop

  3167. in

  3172. miss

  3173. all

  3174. the

  3179. and

  3180. the

  3181. activity

  3182. of

  3183. our

  3184. city

  3185. there

  3186. he

  3187. was

  3188. able

  3189. to

  3190. encounter

  3191. Christ

  3192. and

  3193. to

  3194. be

  3195. an

  3196. agent

  3197. of

  3198. his

  3199. grace

  3200. friends

  3201. Jesus

  3202. 2000

  3203. years

  3204. ago

  3205. came

  3206. to

  3207. some

  3208. disciples

  3209. walk

  3210. in

  3211. the

  3212. sea

  3213. of

  3214. Galilee

  3215. and

  3216. he

  3217. said

  3218. come

  3219. and

  3220. follow

  3221. me

  3222. come

  3223. and

  3224. be

  3225. with

  3226. me

  3227. come

  3228. and

  3229. learn

  3230. from

  3231. friends

  3232. even

  3233. today

  3234. Jesus

  3235. looks

  3236. us

  3237. in

  3238. the

  3239. eye

  3240. and

  3241. he

  3242. says

  3243. to

  3244. 21st

  3245. century

  3246. Hong

  3247. Kong

  3248. come

  3249. and

  3250. follow

  3251. me

  3252. come

  3253. and

  3254. be

  3255. with

  3256. me

  3257. come

  3258. and

  3259. abide

  3260. with

  3261. me

  3262. come

  3263. and

  3264. remain

  3265. in

  3266. my

  3267. love

  3268. and

  3269. let

  3270. me

  3271. teach

  3272. you

  3273. what

  3274. it

  3275. means

  3276. to

  3277. be

  3278. my

  3279. disciple

  3280. let's

  3281. pray

  3282. let's

  3283. pray

  3284. Lord

  3285. Jesus

  3286. Christ

  3287. we

  3288. confess

  3289. God

  3290. that

  3291. so

  3292. often

  3293. we

  3294. reduce

  3295. our

  3296. discipleship

  3297. of

  3298. you

  3299. our

  3300. followership

  3301. of

  3302. to

  3303. a

  3304. bunch

  3305. of

  3306. rules

  3307. and

  3308. regulations

  3309. to

  3310. 10

  3311. steps

  3312. a

  3313. couple

  3314. of

  3315. programs

  3316. things

  3317. that

  3318. we

  3319. need

  3320. to

  3321. do

  3322. in

  3323. order

  3324. to

  3325. tick

  3326. a

  3327. box

  3328. or

  3329. feel

  3330. like

  3331. we've

  3332. done

  3333. what

  3334. we

  3335. needed

  3336. Christ

  3337. this

  3338. morning

  3339. you

  3340. ask

  3341. us

  3342. to

  3343. come

  3344. to

  3345. you

  3346. to

  3347. be

  3348. with

  3349. you

  3350. God

  3351. want

  3352. you

  3353. remind

  3354. us

  3355. of

  3356. that

  3357. and

  3358. you

  3359. Holy

  3360. Spirit

  3361. come

  3362. and

  3363. draw

  3364. us

  3365. close

  3366. God

  3367. I

  3368. want

  3369. to

  3370. pray

  3371. especially

  3372. maybe

  3373. just

  3374. for

  3375. those

  3376. of

  3377. us

  3378. who

  3379. feel

  3380. unworthy

  3381. who

  3382. feel

  3383. like

  3384. we're

  3385. not

  3386. good

  3387. enough

  3388. Christ

  3389. want

  3390. you

  3391. remind

  3392. us

  3393. that

  3394. it's

  3395. all

  3396. by

  3397. grace

  3398. God

  3399. I

  3400. want

  3401. you

  3402. help

  3403. us

  3404. as

  3405. watermark

  3406. to

  3407. be a

  3408. church

  3409. that

  3410. walks

  3411. deeply

  3412. with you

  3413. in

  3414. in

  3415. the

  3416. day

  3417. to

  3418. day

  3419. to

  3420. day

  3421. realities

  3422. in

  3423. the

  3424. trenches

  3425. of

  3426. life

  3427. whether

  3428. we

  3429. are

  3430. at

  3431. work

  3432. at

  3433. university

  3434. at

  3435. home

  3436. with

  3437. the

  3438. family

  3439. when

  3440. we

  3441. on

  3442. the

  3443. bus

  3444. or

  3445. at

  3446. our

  3447. computer

  3448. to

  3449. be

  3450. those

  3451. that

  3452. are

  3453. centering

  3454. orientating

  3455. our

  3456. lives

  3457. around

  3458. you

  3459. Christ

  3460. to

  3461. pray

  3462. maybe

  3463. especially

  3464. for

  3465. those

  3466. that

  3467. are

  3468. not

  3469. followers

  3470. of

  3471. Jesus

  3472. maybe

  3473. for

  3474. 10

  3475. years

  3476. we've

  3477. gone

  3478. to

  3479. church

  3480. we've

  3481. ticked

  3482. the

  3483. box

  3484. we've

  3485. never

  3486. encountered

  3487. you

  3488. in

  3489. a

  3490. life

  3491. transforming

  3492. real

  3493. way

  3494. Jesus

  3495. I

  3496. pray

  3497. this

  3498. morning

  3499. would

  3500. you

  3501. speak

  3502. into

  3503. us

  3504. call

  3505. us

  3506. to

  3507. follow

  3508. you

  3509. God

  3510. I

  3511. want

  3512. you

  3513. open

  3514. our

  3515. eyes

  3516. to

  3517. see

  3518. for

  3519. who

  3520. you

  3521. are

  3522. help

  3523. us

  3524. to

  3525. repent

  3526. of

  3527. our

  3528. sin

  3529. to

  3530. confess

  3531. our

  3532. need

  3533. for

  3534. you

  3535. and

  3536. to

  3537. come

  3538. and

  3539. to

  3540. follow

  3541. you

  3542. Jesus

  3543. we

  3544. pray

  3545. come

  3546. and

  3547. have

  3548. your

  3549. way

  3550. God

  3551. I

  3552. pray

  3553. that

  3554. even

  3555. this

  3556. week

  3557. as

  3558. we

  3559. go

  3560. into

  3561. the

  3562. city

  3563. of

  3564. Hong

  3565. Kong

  3566. as

  3567. we

  3568. go

  3569. about

  3570. our

  3571. lives

  3572. won't

  3573. we

  3574. go

  3575. not

  3576. just

  3577. as

  3578. Christians

  3579. in a

  3580. modern

  3581. sense

  3582. but

  3583. as

  3584. followers

  3585. of

  3586. Jesus

  3587. not

  3588. just

  3589. those

  3590. who

  3591. would

  3592. tick

  3593. the

  3595. of

  3596. Christianity

  3597. on a

  3619. those

  3625. pray

  3626. come

  3627. and

  3628. help

  3629. us

  3630. God

  3631. we

  3632. pray

  3633. these
