  1. The scripture reading comes from Matthew chapter 4 and Luke chapter 6.

Matthew 4 chapter mention Luke 6 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. In Matthew 4 verse 13 we read,

    Matthew 4:13

  4. And leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea,

  5. in the territory of Zabulon and Naphtali.

  6. Then in verse 17 we read,

  7. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying,

  8. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  9. While walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,

  10. Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother,

  11. casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

  12. And he said to them,

  13. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

  14. Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  15. And he went throughout all Galilee.

  16. And going on from there, he saw two other brothers,

  17. James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother,

  18. in the boat with Zebedee, their father, mending their nets,

  19. and he caught them.

  20. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

  21. And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,

  22. and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,

  23. and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

  24. And in Luke 6, verse 39, we read,

    Luke 6:39

  25. He also told them a parable.

  26. Can a blind man lead a blind man?

  27. Will they not both fall into a pit?

  28. A disciple is not above his teacher,

  29. but everyone, when he is fully trained,

  30. will be like his teacher.

  31. Amen.

  32. This is the word of God.

  33. Amen.

  34. Great.

  35. Thank you so much, Angeline.

  36. Just such a great privilege and pleasure to be with you this morning.

  37. Let me just pray for us as we dive into God's word together.

  38. Father, I just want to thank you that your word is powerful,

  39. that you call us to follow you.

  40. And I pray this morning that even as I speak and we listen,

  41. Lord, I pray that you'd remove the distractions from our hearts.

  42. And I pray that you would open our eyes to see you in a fresh way,

  43. and to see in a fresh way what it means to become like you as followers,

  44. to have a new goal,

  45. to be people who are transformed into your image.

  46. And I pray this in Jesus' wonderful name.

  47. Amen.

  48. Amen.

  49. Great.

  50. It's such a privilege to be with you guys this morning.

  51. We're continuing, again, in our series looking at what it means to follow Jesus.

  52. And if I was to ask you a quick trivia quiz question,

  53. what is Watermark's mission statement?

  54. I don't know how many of you would be able to answer that.

  55. But our mission statement is all about we're here to make mature disciples of Jesus,

  56. who then make more disciples of Jesus and more disciples of Jesus,

  57. and fill this city and transform this city to the glory of God with people who are followers,

  58. disciples of Jesus.

  59. And so we're looking at this idea of what does it mean to follow Jesus in everyday life?

  60. That following him is not just something which is a Sunday thing,

  61. but actually in all of your life,

  62. from your social media to your dating choices, your parenting,

  63. every aspect of life is shaped by what it means to follow Jesus.

  64. And so last week, Kevin looked at what it means to be a Talmudim,

  65. a first century disciple of Jesus.

  66. And he showed us that an apprentice in the first century to a rabbi

  67. would be someone who has gone through a whole load of education,

  68. and they qualify to be a disciple of a rabbi

  69. by having passed basically a disciple job interview,

  70. where they show their performance.

  71. And he showed us how Jesus was so different,

  72. that Jesus didn't require a performance grade to get in,

  73. that he chose a random bunch of people out of pure grace.

  74. It was his initiative.

  75. And then he showed us that he was not just the normal rabbi like everyone else,

  76. he's the king of heaven who is inviting us,

  77. not just to follow him as an ordinary teacher,

  78. but as the king of heaven who is bringing in the kingdom of heaven.

  79. And he showed us that the goal of a disciple was three things.

  80. To be with Jesus, which we looked at last week,

  81. to become like Jesus,

  82. and to do what Jesus did, what your rabbi does.

  83. And so he showed us last week,

  84. everything that we do comes out of,

  85. and everything we're going to carry on in the rest of this series

  86. comes out of that sense of abiding with,

  87. of being with Jesus in relationship with him.

  88. Everything else is not kind of,

  89. we've moved on from that.

  90. Everything else flows out of this relationship with Jesus.

  91. We don't just do a Bible study or a quiet time in the morning

  92. and then forget about Jesus.

  93. The whole of our lives are to be lived in the presence of Jesus.

  94. And so we've talked about that last week,

  95. and today we're going to move on to what it looks like as a disciple

  96. to become like Jesus.

  97. And I'm going to read to you that verse again in a second.

  98. Well, that verse which says,

  99. Can a blind man lead a blind man?

  100. Will they not both fall into a pit?

  101. A disciple is not above his teacher,

  102. but everyone, when he's fully trained,

  103. will become like his teacher.

  104. Now, Don Whitney, who's an author,

  105. he illustrates this principle by saying,

  106. imagine if you are a six-year-old kid

  107. who has been forced by your mom or your dad

  108. to do piano practice.

  109. And it's death.

  110. Like, you're just dying.

  111. You hate it.

  112. And then suddenly an angel comes down from heaven

  113. and whisks you away during your piano practice,

  114. takes you away to this incredible concert hall,

  115. maybe Asia World Expo,

  116. and there is this piano genius,

  117. a virtuoso,

  118. playing the hardest Mozart piece,

  119. his sonata number 18,

  120. and it's breathtaking.

  121. It is effortless.

  122. It's incredible.

  123. And the angel turns to you and says,

  124. what do you think?

  125. And you go, wow.

  126. And then the angel turns and says,

  127. that's you in 20 years' time.

  128. Then he turns to your piano and says,

  129. but you must practice.

  130. And the angel disappears,

  131. and you're left there with your piano.

  132. Now, what's just happened?

  133. If he remembers who he's going to become like,

  134. his day-to-day practice

  135. has just got a totally new vision.

  136. He's just got a whole new direction,

  137. a whole new goal,

  138. which is going to move him into his future.

  139. His practice will not look the same again.

  140. And that's what Jesus is saying in this parable.

  141. He's saying,

  142. who you want to become like,

  143. the vision that you have of your life,

  144. and your teacher,

  145. who you want to be like,

  146. that is going to change and shape everything

  147. that you do in your life.

  148. Everyone, when he's fully trained,

  149. will be like his teacher.

  150. So what Jesus is doing,

  151. he's trying to give us a vision

  152. for where he's going,

  153. to be like Jesus.

  154. Here's how Paul says the same thing.

  155. He says, 2 Corinthians 3 verse 18,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  156. he says,

  157. and we all with unveiled face,

  158. beholding the glory of the Lord,

  159. are being transformed.

  160. That is a present continuous,

  161. that's an ongoing process,

  162. into the same image of Jesus,

  163. from one degree of glory to another.

  164. You see what he's saying?

  165. That word transformed

  166. is the word metamorphosis.

  167. It's the word,

  168. it's that process of transformation,

  169. when you go from a caterpillar,

  170. all the way,

  171. changing stage by stage,

  172. to become this beautiful butterfly.

  173. And he's saying,

  174. that this is what,

  175. some people call spiritual transformation,

  176. or sanctification.

  177. This is what the goal,

  178. of the Christian life is.

  179. Author Dallas Willard,

  180. said it like this,

  181. spiritual formation,

  182. in the Christian tradition,

  183. is a process,

  184. of being increasingly possessed,

  185. and permeated,

  186. by the character traits of Jesus,

  187. as we walk,

  188. in the easy yoke of discipleship,

  189. with Jesus as our teacher.

  190. Do you see what he's saying?

  191. The goal that Jesus saved you for,

  192. was not simply to go to church.

  193. It was not simply,

  194. just to get into heaven.

  195. It's not simply so you read your Bible,

  196. and become a nice moral person.

  197. The reason,

  198. that Jesus saved you,

  199. is so that you,

  200. and I,

  201. and we as a church,

  202. will be conformed,

  203. will be transformed,

  204. will be metamorphosized,

  205. into,

  206. the image,

  207. of Jesus,

  208. that we become,

  209. like him.

  210. He is God,

  211. we are not.

  212. But our character,

  213. can look ever more,

  214. like his,

  215. incredible,

  216. all glorious character.

  217. And for first century disciples,

  218. this was not theory.

  219. I read about,

  220. a,

  221. someone who,

  222. a group of rabbi,

  223. a group of disciples,

  224. who in imitating their rabbi,

  225. their rabbi had a stoop.

  226. And so,

  227. he would walk behind,

  228. his disciples would walk behind,

  229. and everyone else,

  230. would have this stoop,

  231. as his disciple.

  232. I heard other,

  233. there's another story,

  234. where,

  235. disciples so wanted,

  236. to be like their teacher,

  237. that they would hide,

  238. in the bedroom,

  239. of the rabbi,

  240. to see how,

  241. he made love to his wife,

  242. so they knew how to do it.

  243. This is,

  244. serious business.

  245. You know,

  246. I don't know if you've ever seen,

  247. that Japanese TV,

  248. game show,

  249. called Human Tetris.

  250. It's,

  251. it's very funny.

  252. It's,

  253. they have this moving wall,

  254. with a hole,

  255. cut out in different shapes.

  256. And,

  257. and there are contestants,

  258. and what they have to do,

  259. they have to,

  260. as the,

  261. the wall moves towards them,

  262. they have to make,

  263. the shape,

  264. of the hole,

  265. otherwise they get knocked,

  266. into the water,

  267. a pool of water,

  268. behind them.

  269. And this is actually,

  270. what Christian discipleship,

  271. is.

  272. It is human Tetris,

  273. of a different time.

  274. Jesus,

  275. he's not just our saviour,

  276. he's our lord,

  277. and he's shaping us,

  278. so that our lives,

  279. begin to bend,

  280. and conform,

  281. and to flex,

  282. into his,

  283. cross shaped,

  284. life.

  285. That we look,

  286. more like him.

  287. That's the goal,

  288. of discipleship.

  289. But then the question is,

  290. if we are meant to,

  291. shape and flex,

  292. into him,

  293. why should we,

  294. even do that?

  295. Why should we,

  296. follow Jesus?

  297. Well firstly,

  298. recognize,

  299. every one of us,

  300. is following someone.

  301. You know,

  302. Taylor Swift,

  303. has 88 million followers,

  304. on Twitter.

  305. Justin Bieber,

  306. has 113 million,

  307. I just found out.

  308. What do followers,

  309. do?

  310. Followers,

  311. get shaped,

  312. and influenced,

  313. by who they follow.

  314. My brother-in-law,

  315. is what you might call,

  316. a key opinion leader,

  317. in food,

  318. and restaurants,

  319. and staycations.

  320. His YouTube channel,

  321. has hundreds,

  322. thousands of subscribers.

  323. And what do they do?

  324. What he recommends,

  325. people follow.

  326. That's why advertisers,

  327. pay him money.

  328. But when Jesus says,

  329. can a blind man,

  330. lead a blind man,

  331. will they not,

  332. both fall into a pit?

  333. He's referring,

  334. to the religious leaders,

  335. the Pharisees.

  336. And he's saying,

  337. who you follow,

  338. really matters.

  339. Because,

  340. if they are blind,

  341. your teacher is blind,

  342. you are going to fall,

  343. into a pit in your life.

  344. And so the reality,

  345. he's saying is,

  346. follow someone,

  347. who is going to give you,

  348. a beautiful future,

  349. not someone,

  350. who's going to lead you,

  351. into a pit.

  352. And there's a question,

  353. and here's the reality.

  354. You're not autonomous.

  355. You are being discipled.

  356. Who is discipling you?

  357. Well,

  358. if you do nothing about that,

  359. let me tell you,

  360. here's one thing,

  361. that's discipling you,

  362. this city,

  363. is discipling you.

  364. You know,

  365. when I first came to Hong Kong,

  366. I didn't,

  367. need to feel,

  368. any moments of kind of,

  369. you know,

  370. when you're waiting for the MTR,

  371. you're waiting for something.

  372. And I was so relaxed,

  373. I was fine,

  374. and I would laugh,

  375. at everybody else,

  376. who was just kind of,

  377. rushing around,

  378. restfully,

  379. trying to get into the lift,

  380. trying to kind of,

  381. all the time on their phone,

  382. any spare minute,

  383. like,

  384. like they were an addict,

  385. or something.

  386. And I would laugh at it.

  387. I thought,

  388. well,

  389. that's ridiculous.

  390. And then I got sucked in.

  391. And two years ago,

  392. I suddenly realised,

  393. I was just like them.

  394. I couldn't get into a lift,

  395. for 30 seconds,

  396. without pulling out my phone,

  397. and kind of looking,

  398. at a WhatsApp message,

  399. that I'd already looked at,

  400. like a minute before.

  401. And I got FOMO,

  402. fear of missing out,

  403. if I didn't check,

  404. when the notification ding went off.

  405. My heart,

  406. had been captured.

  407. This city,

  408. is discipling,

  409. what you love,

  410. and what you fear,

  411. and to desire,

  412. certain things,

  413. through your habits.

  414. Your parents,

  415. have discipled you,

  416. more than anybody else.

  417. They've influenced you,

  418. and your responses today,

  419. are much,

  420. much shaped,

  421. by what they,

  422. have shaped,

  423. in your life.

  424. You don't need to do anything,

  425. except wake up tomorrow,

  426. and you're already being discipled,

  427. by someone.

  428. And conformed,

  429. into their image,

  430. which is why,

  431. James Smith,

  432. says this,

  433. discipleship,

  434. with Jesus,

  435. is a way,

  436. to curate your heart,

  437. to be attentive,

  438. to,

  439. and intentional,

  440. about,

  441. what,

  442. and who,

  443. you love.

  444. He's saying,

  445. we've got to be intentional,

  446. about,

  447. what it means,

  448. to follow Jesus.

  449. But you think,

  450. well,

  451. why Jesus?

  452. Why not Elon Musk,

  453. or Li Kao Xing,

  454. or your boss?

  455. Here's why.

  456. Anyone else,

  457. you follow,

  458. will weigh you down,

  459. with expectations,

  460. you can't live up to.

  461. But Jesus wants to free you,

  462. from the burdens,

  463. that people put on you.

  464. Matthew 23,

  465. describes the religious leaders,

  466. of the time.

  467. Here's what he says about them.

  468. These other teachers,

  469. he says,

  470. they tie up heavy burdens,

  471. hard to bear,

  472. and they lay them,

  473. on people's shoulders,

  474. but they themselves,

  475. are not willing,

  476. to move them,

  477. with their finger.

  478. Do you know what he's saying?

  479. He's saying,

  480. any other teacher,

  481. self-help books,

  482. religion,

  483. devoid of relationship,

  484. with Jesus,

  485. Hong Kong culture,

  486. this city,

  487. what does it do?

  488. It lays expectations,

  489. on you.

  490. It lays standards,

  491. for you to have to live up to.

  492. And if you manage,

  493. to reach them,

  494. you are filled,

  495. with self-righteous pride,

  496. and if you don't,

  497. you get crushed,

  498. in shame,

  499. in guilt,

  500. in just this sense,

  501. of burden on your back,

  502. that you're a failure,

  503. never good enough.

  504. And no one comes,

  505. and lifts those burdens,

  506. off you.

  507. Here's what Jesus says.

  508. Come to me,

  509. all,

  510. all,

  511. who are weary,

  512. and heavy laden,

  513. and I will give you rest.

  514. Take my yoke upon you,

  515. and learn from me,

  516. for I am gentle,

  517. and lowly,

  518. and you will find rest,

  519. for your souls.

  520. Isn't that an amazing promise?

  521. You see,

  522. that yoke,

  523. was a rabbi's term,

  524. actually,

  525. for someone's teaching.

  526. They talked about the yoke of the law,

  527. and things like that.

  528. But,

  529. but literally,

  530. it was a wooden weight,

  531. that you put,

  532. on an oxen,

  533. to,

  534. around their neck,

  535. to train them,

  536. to plow,

  537. a field straight.

  538. And Jesus here says,

  539. I have a yoke of training,

  540. but it's not a weighty yoke.

  541. It's an easy yoke.

  542. He's not saying,

  543. it's easy for life,

  544. as a Christian.

  545. It's not.

  546. But he's saying,

  547. I don't load you,

  548. with all the other burdens,

  549. all the other expectations,

  550. all the guilt,

  551. all the shame,

  552. all those other things,

  553. that even in religion,

  554. even in church,

  555. you can feel that,

  556. when we're not walking with Jesus.

  557. But Jesus says,

  558. on the cross,

  559. I've taken them.

  560. I've taken them.

  561. My yoke is easy.

  562. My burden is light.

  563. Your guilt,

  564. your shame,

  565. those unmet expectations,

  566. that you can't lift by yourself,

  567. and you can't carry,

  568. your own sinfulness,

  569. I lift that off you.

  570. I'm not harsh,

  571. and punishing.

  572. I'm gentle,

  573. and lowly.

  574. I'm accessible.

  575. I'm with you.

  576. And if you're trying to,

  577. if you're starting to take those burdens,

  578. on your back,

  579. those expectations,

  580. of all the things that you've got to be,

  581. but you know you can't be,

  582. that's because you're trying to take another yoke,

  583. not mine.

  584. Your training with Jesus,

  585. is not about meeting a standard.

  586. Jesus has met the standard for you.

  587. This yoke is a yoke of grace.

  588. But here's the key thing.

  589. Grace is not opposed to effort.

  590. It is opposed to earning.

  591. Earning is an attitude,

  592. where you never feel you've done enough,

  593. but effort is an action that you have to do.

  594. Jesus,

  595. when calling us to become like him,

  596. he's not calling us to try harder,

  597. but he's calling us to train.

  598. You know,

  599. I love my son.

  600. When he wasn't walking,

  601. I loved him.

  602. Now he's walking,

  603. I still love him,

  604. okay?

  605. My love for him is not determined

  606. whether he walks or not.

  607. But,

  608. I have still spent ages

  609. encouraging him how to walk.

  610. I've held his hands.

  611. I've walked with him step by step.

  612. I've encouraged him

  613. as he's kind of fallen over again

  614. and he's come back up again

  615. and we've gone on this journey

  616. again and again and again

  617. and again and again.

  618. Why?

  619. He wasn't earning my love.

  620. He already had that.

  621. But what was he doing?

  622. He was training to become

  623. the person he was made to be.

  624. Someone who can walk.

  625. Someone who is going to flourish.

  626. That as a father

  627. who loves his child

  628. is what I want.

  629. That when God looks at us

  630. and he calls us to train

  631. is what he wants for us.

  632. He is conforming us

  633. into the image of his son

  634. because that's where we flourish.

  635. That's where we find rest.

  636. To be like Jesus.

  637. Follow me, he says.

  638. That's where we're going.

  639. But you know,

  640. sometimes I think as Christians,

  641. don't we often look at our lust

  642. or our lack of self-control

  643. or our complaining

  644. and all the things

  645. that we see that we do wrong

  646. and then we look at Jesus'

  647. perfect responses

  648. and we go,

  649. yeah, but that's Jesus, isn't it?

  650. I'm not Jesus.

  651. I can't do that.

  652. And we just kind of carry on

  653. living our own way.

  654. And in one sense, it's true.

  655. You can't do that now.

  656. But if my son had looked

  657. at someone running

  658. while he still couldn't walk

  659. and said,

  660. I can't do that.

  661. It's true.

  662. He couldn't at that moment.

  663. At least not yet.

  664. But with practice,

  665. he will.

  666. And he is.

  667. Jesus says,

  668. everyone when he is fully trained

  669. becomes like his teacher.

  670. That means you can be partially trained.

  671. We're not fully trained yet.

  672. But we're in that training process

  673. which will continue

  674. for the rest of our lives.

  675. And he's saying,

  676. I'm leading you

  677. to become more like me.

  678. Will you trust me?

  679. Some people think

  680. that that just should happen

  681. miraculously.

  682. We say things like,

  683. let go and let God.

  684. Which is actually

  685. terrible theology.

  686. You see,

  687. it's like God will do

  688. everything for you.

  689. No, it's a partnership.

  690. If I say to my son,

  691. we're just going to lay hands on you

  692. and pray that you're going to walk

  693. without any effort.

  694. That's a miracle.

  695. God does that in our lives.

  696. But if that happens

  697. every single time,

  698. he's going to need a miracle

  699. every time he tries to stand up.

  700. But God says,

  701. no, I want to partner with you.

  702. I'm going to take the weight

  703. of the yoke

  704. so you don't have to earn my love.

  705. You've got it.

  706. It's a light yoke.

  707. And I'm giving my spirit in you

  708. to empower you.

  709. You just need to walk with me,

  710. to be with me,

  711. as Kevin was saying last week.

  712. And I'm going to lead you there.

  713. I'm going to lead you there.

  714. And I know often in my life,

  715. I've wanted to change.

  716. Don't we want to change?

  717. I've wanted to change.

  718. But I've just not known how to change.

  719. And so here's what I want to spend

  720. the rest of our time looking at.

  721. We've talked about what it means

  722. that the goal is to be like Jesus.

  723. It's by grace.

  724. But let's see,

  725. how do we get chained by Jesus?

  726. I've got four things here,

  727. how Jesus trains us.

  728. The first is through his word.

  729. You know,

  730. the world around is discipling us

  731. to believe a certain story about life,

  732. a vision of the good life.

  733. You know,

  734. what's the Hong Kong story?

  735. It's like life is a competition.

  736. You,

  737. your value is based

  738. on how you perform

  739. in this competition.

  740. So,

  741. for you to be a success,

  742. for you to be worth anything,

  743. what have you got to do?

  744. Well,

  745. you've got to

  746. get in the best schools,

  747. you've got to study hard,

  748. you've got to get the best jobs,

  749. you've got to get promotion,

  750. you've got to then buy a flat,

  751. get married,

  752. buy a bigger flat,

  753. earn enough money

  754. so that you can retire early,

  755. so that then your kids

  756. can get into the best schools,

  757. can study hard,

  758. can get the best jobs,

  759. and it just goes on and on and on and on and on,

  760. and that's the cycle.

  761. And anyone who's not in that race,

  762. or anyone who's like a loser

  763. down in last place,

  764. they're just,

  765. they're just a loser,

  766. a failure.

  767. And we can look down on them.

  768. So just get working,

  769. get harder.

  770. How much does that burden us?

  771. Parents,

  772. students,

  773. workers,

  774. the poor,

  775. how much do we feel

  776. the heaviness of that yoke?

  777. And yet that's a vision

  778. that many of us,

  779. all of us are saturated with

  780. every single day

  781. as we go out into Hong Kong.

  782. Jesus comes and he says,

  783. learn from me.

  784. I want to give you a new story.

  785. I want you to see who I am.

  786. And this is why teaching

  787. and scripture is so important.

  788. It's why Sundays are so important

  789. to get your mind.

  790. Here's what Romans says,

  791. don't be conformed to this world,

  792. but be transformed.

  793. So the renewal of your mind,

  794. there's the same metamorphosis word.

  795. Your mind needs to get changed

  796. and transformed by God's word

  797. as you're reading scripture,

  798. as you're listening to sermons,

  799. as you're discussing it together.

  800. God's word,

  801. worship music,

  802. needs to flood your heart

  803. so you have a new

  804. and a better story,

  805. a new and a better goal,

  806. a new and a better teacher

  807. to have your eyes fixed upon.

  808. And this is not just about

  809. getting information,

  810. it's about getting a new set of lenses

  811. and desires

  812. and loves to shape you

  813. in all of life.

  814. You know,

  815. when Etienne was five months old,

  816. Fiona downloaded an app

  817. for baby activities.

  818. And before you could get on the app,

  819. there was this survey to fill in.

  820. And at the end of it,

  821. suddenly it pulled up

  822. all these statistics.

  823. And it said,

  824. your baby is 19th percentile,

  825. 19% percentile for communication,

  826. 14% for movement.

  827. And by this I'm going,

  828. oh my goodness,

  829. 12% for brain development.

  830. And I'm going,

  831. he's going to be a failure

  832. for all of his life.

  833. 49% for something else,

  834. I don't know.

  835. And I went,

  836. at least he's normal in that one.

  837. And then suddenly,

  838. I stopped.

  839. And I thought,

  840. that's ridiculous.

  841. My son's life is in God's hands.

  842. He loves us.

  843. He cares for us.

  844. He's got our future

  845. in his hands.

  846. Why am I so worried

  847. about this little stupid thing

  848. at five months old?

  849. But isn't that exactly

  850. what social media,

  851. what the rest of Hong Kong

  852. does to us every single day

  853. and how we respond?

  854. But scripture

  855. is what will recalibrate you

  856. to see life

  857. through a different lens.

  858. And it gets you out

  859. of that performance insanity

  860. that we're just soaked in.

  861. But many Christians in Hong Kong,

  862. we think transformation

  863. is about just information.

  864. And so we think

  865. more Bible knowledge

  866. equals more godliness.

  867. That's why we do

  868. tons of courses.

  869. We do whether it's BSF

  870. or Bible story course

  871. or Bible studies.

  872. We listen to famous preachers.

  873. And it's all great stuff

  874. we need to learn.

  875. We're all about the Bible

  876. here at Watermark.

  877. But I think many of us,

  878. our view

  879. of how we learn Jesus

  880. is shaped more

  881. by the city's view

  882. of education

  883. rather than Jesus' view

  884. of discipleship.

  885. Because, you know,

  886. you could study this passage

  887. about come to me

  888. and I will give you rest.

  889. You could listen

  890. to sermons about it

  891. and listen all year

  892. and you never actually

  893. experience the rest

  894. that Jesus wants to give you.

  895. Do you know why?

  896. Because you're not learning

  897. to be with Jesus

  898. as you're reading.

  899. You're just doing it

  900. for information.

  901. He wants you to listen

  902. to this sermon.

  903. He wants you to read scripture

  904. saying,

  905. God, I want you to speak to me.

  906. I want to know you.

  907. And it's not just

  908. you're not learning

  909. to be with Jesus,

  910. but actually

  911. there are habits

  912. in our life

  913. which directly

  914. counter

  915. everything we're reading

  916. and start to shape us

  917. so they offset

  918. everything that God

  919. is trying to form us into.

  920. Which is why

  921. learning scripture

  922. is not enough.

  923. It's important.

  924. But we also need

  925. the second thing,

  926. which is

  927. we need to practice

  928. his godly habits.

  929. Do you know your,

  930. this is what

  931. James Smith says.

  932. Your deepest desire

  933. is the one manifested

  934. by your daily life

  935. and habits.

  936. Just stop there

  937. for a minute.

  938. Just think about that.

  939. Your deepest desire

  940. is the one manifested

  941. by your daily life

  942. and habits.

  943. This is because

  944. our action,

  945. our doing,

  946. bubbles up

  947. from our loves

  948. which are habits

  949. we've acquired

  950. through the practices

  951. we're immersed in.

  952. And here's what he says.

  953. I might be learning

  954. to love a goal

  955. that I'm not even aware of

  956. and that nonetheless

  957. governs my life

  958. in unconscious ways.

  959. This is what Jesus,

  960. you know,

  961. the Bible says,

  962. sow to the spirit.

  963. Because what you sow,

  964. you'll reap.

  965. How easy

  966. is it to get into habits?

  967. Bad ones,

  968. really easy.

  969. Good ones,

  970. really hard.

  971. Sin is a bad habit

  972. hardwired into our hearts.

  973. Good godliness

  974. is a good habit

  975. that the spirit

  976. is wanting to work

  977. and change our hearts

  978. to desire and practice

  979. inside.

  980. My son will not let us

  981. brush his teeth.

  982. He hates it.

  983. He shuts his mouth.

  984. He turns his head away.

  985. But I can guarantee

  986. if he's anything like me

  987. in 20 years' time,

  988. if he goes one day

  989. without brushing his teeth,

  990. he's going to go,

  991. man,

  992. there's something wrong.

  993. I just don't like this.

  994. How do you get

  995. from hating something

  996. to loving it?

  997. One of the key ways

  998. is you just practice it.

  999. Your habits,

  1000. your desires

  1001. just get shaped

  1002. by these habits

  1003. so your responses

  1004. become automatic.

  1005. I don't even think

1006. about brushing my teeth now.

  1007. But the habits

  1008. you have today

  1009. are forming

  1010. your future.

  1011. This is what

  1012. scripture's saying.

  1013. What you reap

  1014. is what you sow

  1015. is what you reap.

  1016. What the first thing,

  1017. just think,

  1018. when the first thing

1019. you do in the morning

  1020. and the last thing

  1021. you do at night

1022. is look at your phone,

  1023. don't think

  1024. that isn't shaping you,

  1025. it is.

  1026. Don't think,

  1027. if you have nothing

1028. to do for four minutes

  1029. without,

  1030. and you have to

  1031. reach for your phone

  1032. and mindlessly look

  1033. through Facebook

  1034. or YouTube

  1035. or something,

  1036. you're going to enjoy

  1037. rest with God

  1038. in the present.

  1039. Don't think you will.

  1040. That habit is countering

  1041. everything Jesus

1042. wants to do in you.

  1043. Our culture's discipling us

  1044. into restless mediocrity

  1045. where we struggle

1046. to relate to anyone else

  1047. when Jesus wants

  1048. to bring us

  1049. into flourishing.

1050. What if we as a church

  1051. started a gospel rebellion

  1052. against our restless culture?

1053. What if the first thing

1054. that you did in the morning

  1055. was to train yourself

  1056. to say,

  1057. thank you, Father,

  1058. that I'm a dearly loved child

  1059. of God today.

  1060. Today's your day.

1061. I am living for you.

  1062. I need your grace.

1063. What if the last thing

  1064. you did every day

  1065. was to look back

  1066. over your day

  1067. and say,

  1068. God,

  1069. search my heart.

  1070. Show me

1071. where there is any sin

  1072. and you confess it

  1073. and you thank God

  1074. for his grace.

  1075. What if you made

  1076. scripture

  1077. a daily habit?

  1078. You set a time,

  1079. you set a place,

  1080. 15 minutes

  1081. every single day

  1082. in God's word.

  1083. That is going to

  1084. shape your life.

  1085. That is going to

  1086. metamorphosize you.

  1087. Here's what's going to happen.

1088. Let me just kind of

  1089. flesh this out.

  1090. Let's say you've got

  1091. a habit of grumbling

  1092. and complaining.

  1093. When life goes wrong,

  1094. you just get miserable

  1095. and grumpy.

  1096. Anyone like that?

  1097. Okay.

  1098. And you read

  1099. Hebrews 12

  1100. that says,

  1101. Jesus,

  1102. for the joy

  1103. that was set

  1104. before him,

  1105. endured the cross.

  1106. and you go,

  1107. Jesus,

  1108. in the hardest

  1109. situation,

  1110. what is he?

  1111. He's got this joy

  1112. that is sustaining him

  1113. through this

  1114. most agony.

1115. And there's this new vision

1116. of how we can live life.

1117. And what we go is,

  1118. oh, well,

1119. that was just Jesus, right?

  1120. I can't do that.

  1121. Because we've forgotten

1122. that Jesus gave his spirit

  1123. in us

1124. to make us like him.

  1125. And then

1126. we read in James 1

  1127. where it says,

  1128. consider it pure joy,

  1129. my brothers and sisters.

  1130. Whenever you face trials

  1131. of many kinds

  1132. because this is testing

  1133. your faith

1134. and it's growing you mature

  1135. and we read that

1136. and we hate that verse,

  1137. don't we?

  1138. Because we realize

  1139. that that's commanding us

  1140. not to be grumpy

  1141. all the time

  1142. but actually to rejoice

  1143. and we go,

  1144. yeah, I know that

  1145. but I can't do it.

  1146. And Jesus says,

  1147. yes,

  1148. not yet.

  1149. But you will

1150. if you let me train you.

  1151. And so you go,

  1152. you grit your teeth

  1153. and you go,

  1154. okay,

1155. I'm going to be joyful today.

  1156. Good luck.

  1157. That's going to last

  1158. about five minutes.

  1159. Because Jesus' yoke

  1160. is not a self-reliant yoke.

  1161. It's a yoke

  1162. of dependent prayer.

  1163. God,

  1164. that's where I want to be

1165. but I'm not there right now.

  1166. Change my heart.

  1167. Forgive me.

  1168. Make me new, Lord.

  1169. I need you.

  1170. Spirit, fill me.

  1171. What are you doing?

  1172. That's a new habit

  1173. of the heart

  1174. of Jesus' reliance

  1175. not self-reliance.

1176. And so you fill your soul

  1177. with Jesus.

  1178. You put other scriptures

  1179. about joy and thankfulness

  1180. on your screensaver.

  1181. You listen and read

  1182. Christian biographies

  1183. of videos

  1184. of joyful believers

  1185. who are just

  1186. imitating Jesus.

  1187. You start praising God

1188. when you don't feel like it.

  1189. You keep praying

1190. for God to change you

  1191. through that process.

  1192. And then

  1193. God gives you opportunities

  1194. to get grumpy.

  1195. That annoying colleague.

1196. Your kid's just playing up.

  1197. Everything going wrong.

  1198. And you go,

  1199. okay,

  1200. this is an opportunity

  1201. for Jesus

  1202. to change me.

  1203. And you thank God

  1204. and it works

  1205. for a few minutes.

  1206. And then something else

  1207. hits you

1208. and then you just spiral down

  1209. into complaining

  1210. and you go,

  1211. oh, there you go,

  1212. it didn't work.

  1213. And you give up.

  1214. That's just like people

1215. who go to the gym

  1216. once

  1217. and then afterwards

1218. they look in the mirror

1219. and they look at themselves

1220. and what do they see?

  1221. Nothing.

  1222. No change.

  1223. So they go for

  1224. maybe two weeks,

  1225. three times a week,

  1226. look in the mirror,

  1227. what do they see?

  1228. Nothing.

  1229. But do that

  1230. for six months,

  1231. for nine months,

  1232. for a year,

  1233. what will you see?

  1234. Change.

  1235. Change.

  1236. You see,

  1237. spiritual transformation

  1238. is this partnership

1239. with the Spirit of God,

  1240. getting in His Word,

  1241. allowing Him

  1242. to bring us

  1243. to our knees,

  1244. requiring Him

  1245. filling our soul

  1246. with Jesus

1247. in whatever way we can

  1248. in the long haul,

1249. not just the short term.

  1250. But what helps you

  1251. to not give up?

  1252. What helps us

  1253. to persevere

  1254. in this?

  1255. Well,

  1256. we need training partners.

  1257. That's Christian community

  1258. that's coming around us.

  1259. How much easier

1260. is it to go to the gym

  1261. if you've got somebody

  1262. to go with?

  1263. This is why

1264. community is such a big value

1265. for us as a church.

  1266. Because you know

1267. who you hang around with

  1268. shapes

  1269. who you become

  1270. and what you love.

  1271. Make your non-believing

  1272. family or friends

  1273. your primary community

  1274. and unless you are

  1275. really alert,

  1276. their loves,

  1277. their desires

  1278. rub off on you.

  1279. Guaranteed.

1280. So if you are not

  1281. in Christian community

  1282. right now

  1283. during COVID,

1284. if you're just doing this

  1285. by yourself,

  1286. let me tell you,

  1287. you are being discipled

  1288. by everyone else,

  1289. but Jesus has probably

1290. got a whole lot of stuff

1291. he wants you to grow in,

1292. but you won't be hearing him

  1293. because you need

  1294. community in that.

  1295. You know,

  1296. what community does,

  1297. it exposes

  1298. and encourages you.

  1299. When I'm feeling

  1300. restless,

  1301. burdened,

  1302. and someone shares

1303. how Jesus and his word

  1304. is filling them

  1305. with joy

  1306. in the midst

  1307. of tough circumstances,

  1308. do you know

  1309. what that does?

  1310. It exposes me again

  1311. and goes,

  1312. hey,

  1313. I'm not there,

1314. but I want to be like that.

  1315. And it shows you

1316. you come back to God again

  1317. and go,

  1318. God,

  1319. forgive me.

1320. And it just encourages you,

  1321. it spurs you on

  1322. as Hebrews tells us.

  1323. It's like,

  1324. let's keep gathering,

  1325. Hebrews says,

1326. so that we urge each other,

  1327. spur each other on

1328. to love and good deeds.

  1329. And you go,

  1330. Jesus,

  1331. I want that,

  1332. change me.

  1333. And there is just

  1334. this new vital hope.

  1335. That's why we're starting

  1336. something called

  1337. Transformation Groups,

  1338. TGs,

1339. which are two to four people

1340. who meet a couple of times

  1341. a month.

1342. And the goal of that

1343. is that they're going to

  1344. encourage us

  1345. and expose us

  1346. to help pursue

  1347. Christ-likeness

  1348. together.

1349. And if you are not

  1350. in a community group,

  1351. because in community groups

1352. we're going to be doing this,

1353. if you're not in one of those,

  1354. but you know

1355. you need to be in a TG,

  1356. then like,

  1357. let me know

  1358. or let Kevin know

1359. or one of the staff,

  1360. because we want to

  1361. just gather you

1362. together with one of those

1363. because this is so crucial

  1364. for your health

  1365. and the health

  1366. of those around you

  1367. and the health

  1368. of the church.

1369. So we get God's word,

  1370. learning Jesus,

  1371. and that reshapes us,

  1372. it reshapes our desires,

1373. that we desire him more.

  1374. We learn new habits

  1375. in community.

  1376. The final thing

  1377. is Jesus trains us

  1378. through the hard knocks

  1379. of life.

1380. You know what 1 Peter

  1381. tells us?

  1382. It's through trials

  1383. and testing

  1384. that we get refined

  1385. like gold.

  1386. You know,

  1387. nothing in life

  1388. that's worthwhile

  1389. ever happens

  1390. without pain.

1391. We're about to give birth

  1392. to our second child.

  1393. That's painful.

  1394. If you get a master's,

  1395. that's painful.

  1396. If you're a great athlete,

  1397. there's a pain

  1398. in training

1399. that you have to go through.

1400. But how does the yoke

1401. be easy in your life?

1402. It's not that the pain

  1403. is not real.

  1404. It's not that there's

  1405. not real effort involved.

1406. But as Jesus is using

  1407. those trials,

  1408. the challenges

1409. that you may go through

  1410. to sculpt you

1411. to become more like Jesus,

  1412. your eyes,

1413. if your eyes are fixed

  1414. on that prize,

1415. I want to be like Jesus,

  1416. then anything that happens

  1417. to you

1418. is a place to rejoice

  1419. because Jesus is going

  1420. to use that

1421. to make you more like him.

1422. and we do that together

  1423. in community.

  1424. Hong Kong's story

1425. tells you live for comfort,

  1426. avoid suffering.

  1427. That's why we get

  1428. so grumpy at hardship.

1429. But if you see this pain

  1430. as an opportunity

1431. to be trained by him,

1432. to become more like him,

  1433. in God's word,

  1434. in community,

1435. man, you're going to see

  1436. Jesus displayed

  1437. more and more

1438. and more in our lives.

  1439. I heard a podcast

  1440. of a man recently

  1441. who'd just been struggling

  1442. with cancer

  1443. for quite a while.

  1444. It's just a really tough situation.

  1445. But he said this,

  1446. and I'll paraphrase him.

  1447. I wouldn't trade this

  1448. for anything else

  1449. because I've discovered

1450. Jesus in a new way.

  1451. I've learned to rejoice

  1452. in a new way.

  1453. I realized how shallow

  1454. my life was before.

1455. I always used to sing

  1456. Jesus enough for me,

  1457. but I actually thought

1458. that him and something else

  1459. was enough.

  1460. That really Jesus

  1461. wasn't totally enough.

  1462. But he said,

  1463. now, when everything

  1464. is stripped away,

  1465. now I know that it's true.

  1466. Jesus says,

  1467. follow me.

  1468. Be with me.

  1469. Get in my word.

  1470. Learn new habits.

  1471. Be in Christian community.

1472. And you'll walk through life,

  1473. and there'll be ups

  1474. and there'll be downs.

1475. But as you rely on my spirit

  1476. to change you,

  1477. we,

  1478. and as a church,

1479. will look more and more

  1480. like Jesus.

1481. The question for us is,

  1482. do you want that?

1483. Do you want to follow Jesus?

  1484. Because this is where

  1485. he's leading us.

  1486. This is the call.

1487. And this is the journey

  1488. that we're on together.

  1489. Let me pray.

  1490. Father,

1491. I know there are some,

  1492. some of us who,

  1493. you know,

  1494. we look at Jesus,

  1495. and we,

  1496. it's,

  1497. your character seems

  1498. so far off.

1499. And we look at our lives,

1500. and we see the areas

  1501. where we struggle.

  1502. And we,

  1503. we almost give up

1504. the goal that you have

  1505. called us to,

  1506. to be conformed,

  1507. to be transformed

  1508. into your image.

  1509. Because we often think

1510. it all relies on ourselves.

  1511. Or we're more captivated

  1512. by other stories.

1513. Or we've built so many

  1514. habits in our lives

1515. that we have failed to see

  1516. that actually

  1517. those are shaping us

  1518. away from you

  1519. rather than drawing us

  1520. to you.

  1521. Lord, I pray,

1522. change us as a church.

  1523. Open our eyes

1524. to see that you are

  1525. the great shepherd.

1526. You are a great rabbi,

  1527. a great king.

  1528. You're the one

  1529. who is leading us.

  1530. Not to just wait

  1531. and sit and wait

  1532. for heaven,

  1533. but you today

  1534. want to begin

  1535. and want to continue

  1536. this transformation work.

  1537. I pray as a community,

  1538. we will be more

  1539. centered

  1540. on that goal

  1541. than any other goal.

  1542. Lord, I pray

  1543. that we would

  1544. earning more money,

  1545. getting a great job,

  1546. getting a spouse,

  1547. having kids,

1548. having all the other things

  1549. would be way down

  1550. the list of goals

  1551. compared to that goal

  1552. in our lives, Lord.

  1553. I pray reorient us

  1554. to see that you

  1555. are the place

  1556. of flourishing,

1557. that you want to give us

  1558. rest in our souls.

  1559. And Lord,

1560. let us walk with you

  1561. together today

  1562. with effort,

  1563. with struggling,

  1564. but knowing

  1565. that you're the one

  1566. who has already

  1567. gone before us.

  1568. You're the one

  1569. who suffered for us.

  1570. You died for us

  1571. so that you could

  1572. make us like you.

  1573. Work this in us,

  1574. I pray.

  1575. In Jesus' name.

  1576. Amen.
