  1. Father, we give you thanks and praise that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  2. And we give you thanks and praise that your grace grows us, and only your grace will truly grow us,

  3. so that we are fit for heaven, that we are fit for the new heaven and the new earth.

  4. We ask, Father, that you help us to pay deep attention to your word,

  5. that, in fact, your word may enter deeply into our lives to form us,

  6. so that we, Father, might put ourselves in those postures of obedience,

  7. that your grace might work in us most deeply and flower most beautifully for your glory,

  8. for the good of ourselves and the good of others.

  9. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. So, I have a bit of an embarrassing type of way to open the sermon today.

  12. And the reason it's embarrassing is I was sharing with my wife last night about how this week,

  13. I had an insight about the text that just sort of like it hit me like this.

  14. It just completely knocked me and helped me to see and understand and realize things in a very, very new way.

  15. So, in fact, part of my worry about the sermon, actually, is because it's really helped me to see things in a very, very new way.

  16. I hope I'm not too in...

  17. I hope I'm actually...

  18. You can understand me.

  19. I'm not too all over the place, a little bit like a balloon letting the air out,

  20. and it goes all over the place.

  21. I hope I'm clear.

  22. But the reason it's a bit embarrassing, potentially embarrassing, is I share this insight, and you all just go,

  23. really, George?

  24. That's a sign of you having a big insight?

  25. That's pretty pathetic.

  26. Like, when I have an insight, it's like this.

  27. But it's not an insight.

  28. It was just as if God brought something home to me that has changed.

  29. It's helped to solidify or crystallize different things I've been saying and trying to understand the Bible.

  30. And when I share it with you, I can guarantee you that you're going to just go,

  31. uh, like that doesn't sound much, and I'll just try to explain it.

  32. And part of the thing is, it's an analogy that I've heard used before over the years.

  33. And I think it's partially just that God finally wanted to get something through my unbelievably thick skull.

  34. I have a very, very thick skull.

  35. I can be very, duh.

  36. And part of it is, I think, that I've been meditating so much upon Colossians 2, verses 15 to 23,

    Colossians 2:15–23

  37. which we looked at last week, and Colossians 3, verses 1 to 4,

    Colossians 3:1–4

  38. which is what I've been meditating upon and studying all this week.

  39. And I think it was just the combination of God being gracious to me.

  40. And this analogy actually sort of clicking and making sense in a remarkable way.

  41. So now after this buildup, here's your letdown moment.

  42. What effort is required for an apple to become an orange?

  43. What effort by an apple is required for it to be turned into an orange, or to turn itself into an orange?

  44. Well, of course, the correct answer is that no amount of effort by an apple will ever turn it into an orange.

  45. And no amount of effort by an apple will ever do something that makes it worthy of somehow or another being turned into an orange by some other person,

  46. that it can't be forced.

  47. So why is this actually quite a profound statement, even though you all are now profoundly disappointed,

  48. thinking that, George, was your great insight?

  49. We are going to pray far harder for you, George, in the weeks to come, that you have better insights than that.

  50. Well, let's look at the text.

  51. We're preaching through the book of Colossians,

  52. and we're looking today at Colossians 3, chapter 3, verses 1 to 4.

  53. And as part of the context, just before we read this text,

  54. the part that just went on immediately before this,

  55. one of the ways that I summarized that text was it sets before us Christians a question.

  56. Will I grow me, or will the Lord grow me?

  57. Like a fundamental question.

  58. Will I grow me, or will the Lord grow me?

  59. And one of the things that that text looked at in that question is it talked about different types of religious rituals,

  60. different ways to be in tune with nature.

  61. It talked about different ways to try to develop the mind,

  62. different ways to show that the mind has control over the body,

  63. different ways to try to have visions,

  64. basically almost like a bit of a list, a laundry list,

  65. or a shopping list of the different ways that people try to grow themselves.

  66. And the shocking end of all of that was verse 23 of chapter 2,

  67. where it says,

  68. These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion,

  69. in other words, religion that comes ultimately from the self,

  70. and asceticism and severity to the body.

  71. In other words, it seems to be good,

  72. because it seems to talk about you having a very, very deep commitment that you're very, very devoted to.

  73. And it seems to have an ability to show that you have this control in general,

  74. and you're willing to do without,

  75. and general.

  76. So it's all about control.

  77. It's all about your devotion.

  78. And it seems to be very, very wise.

  79. But, the end of verse 23,

  80. they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  81. That in fact, this laundry list,

  82. this shopping list of ways that the religions and spiritualities

  83. and self-help technologies of the world throughout history,

  84. and even today,

  85. have attended to try to direct us so that we can grow,

  86. and that we can change,

  87. and that we can develop.

  88. In fact, at the end of the day,

  89. it doesn't stop the fact that there is a deep part in every single human being

  90. that still desires to be God.

  91. It still desires their God project.

  92. And that these things, in fact, don't work.

  93. And then, in chapter 3,

  94. there's a therefore,

  95. which isn't translated in most versions.

  96. It begins like this.

  97. And I'm just going to read the four verses.

  98. It's only four verses.

  99. It's very short and very brief.

  100. And then we're going to return to it and sort of unpack it.

  101. But this contrast, then,

  102. of these things actually don't work,

  103. therefore, or if, or since,

  104. then,

  105. you have been raised with Christ.

  106. Christ.

  107. Seek the things that are above,

  108. where Christ is,

  109. seated at the right hand of God.

  110. Just pause,

  111. and I'll read it again.

  112. You know,

  113. one of the very interesting things about this

  114. is that the very, very first words of Jesus' ministry,

  115. like,

  116. what are the very, very first words that Jesus says in his public ministry?

  117. His first words that are recorded,

  118. of course,

  119. in Luke,

  120. when he's behind in the temple,

  121. but that's sort of,

  122. in a sense,

  123. a little bit of a coming up for air type of moment,

  124. but fundamentally,

  125. Jesus disappears.

  126. He stays working with Joseph and his family.

  127. Sometime along that,

  128. Joseph dies,

  129. and Jesus is a carpenter for some 30,

  130. well,

  131. another 20 some odd years after that event in the temple.

  132. And then the very,

  133. very first words of Jesus' ministry

  134. are recorded in John's Gospel,

  135. and it's a question.

  136. And the question is,

  137. what are you seeking?

  138. It's interesting that Jesus begins his public ministry

  139. with a question.

  140. Not with a declaration,

  141. but with a question.

  142. What are you seeking?

  143. I mean,

  144. that's a very good question for every human being.

  145. What are you seeking?

  146. And Paul actually then develops this thing here a little bit by,

  147. he says,

  148. if then,

  149. in verse one again,

  150. you have been raised with Christ,

  151. seek the things that are above,

  152. where Christ is,

  153. seated at the right hand of God.

  154. And then he sort of doubles down on the idea,

  155. because set,

  156. this next part,

  157. set your mind,

  158. is a different,

  159. it's a deeper type of commitment,

  160. it's a different type of project than seeking,

  161. it's setting.

  162. Set your minds on things that are above,

  163. not on things that are on earth.

  164. For you have died,

  165. and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  166. When Christ,

  167. who is your life,

  168. appears,

  169. then you also will appear with him in glory.

  170. And I'm going to actually,

  171. I think Andrew has up on the stage,

  172. on the screen,

  173. a more literal translation of verse four.

  174. So I've been using the ESV,

  175. but from the academic commentary research,

  176. a more literal way,

  177. the most literal way of translating verse four,

  178. is when Christ,

  179. your life,

  180. is revealed,

  181. then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

  182. And I'll say that again.

  183. When Christ,

  184. your life,

  185. is revealed,

  186. then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

  187. And this,

  188. of course,

  189. is the Christian hope.

  190. You put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  191. and when you put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  192. he receives you.

  193. And Paul has used a variety of images

  194. to try to communicate what this is,

  195. but it really quite literally means,

  196. and I'm using,

  197. I mean literally,

  198. literally,

  199. not like as a sign for heightened,

  200. like literally,

  201. that what the Bible reveals

  202. is that this profound mystery

  203. that when I am mere mortal,

  204. with all my sins

  205. and all my failings,

  206. all my strengths,

  207. all my weaknesses,

  208. all my genetic predispositions

  209. towards certain things

  210. and away from other types of things,

  211. when I call out to God

  212. and say,

  213. Jesus,

  214. will you be my Savior and my Lord?

  215. Or when I recognize

  216. that that has happened in my life

  217. from my very,

  218. very early age,

  219. because of course,

  220. it's the desire of every Christian parent

  221. that their child never have a moment

  222. that they don't trust in Jesus.

  223. So this giving of yourself to Jesus

  224. can be something that can happen

  225. very,

  226. very,

  227. very young

  228. that just grows and develops

  229. so that a person might say,

  230. I literally,

  231. I've never known a time

  232. when I haven't trusted Jesus

  233. as my Savior and my Lord.

  234. Isn't that the prayer

  235. and the work and labor

  236. of every Christian parent

  237. that that would be the case?

  238. But for those of us

  239. that that wasn't the case,

  240. we say that to Jesus,

  241. and Jesus actually,

  242. we actually,

  243. in a sense,

  244. it's not just that we put our hands in Jesus

  245. and Jesus stays completely,

  246. he is always separate

  247. and he's always different,

  248. but we actually enter into him.

  249. And the Bible earlier used the analogy

  250. in some ways that you can understand

  251. when you see somebody,

  252. whether an adult or a child being baptized,

  253. what you are to understand

  254. is that in a sense

  255. they are plunging into Christ

  256. they plunge into his sinless life,

  257. they plunge into his death upon the cross,

  258. they plunge into him

  259. tasting all there is to taste

  260. of nothing left,

  261. with nothing left,

  262. all there is to taste of death

  263. with nothing that's not tasted,

  264. they plunge into his resurrection.

  265. And in a sense which is true,

  266. but we don't know it in its fullness,

  267. we actually are also,

  268. in a sense,

  269. glorified with him

  270. and that won't be revealed

  271. until,

  272. and this is what it's being talked about.

  273. And because of the way

  274. we human beings are,

  275. when we,

  276. in a sense,

  277. are immersed in Christ,

  278. and this is something

  279. that baptism can't symbolize,

  280. but it's proclaimed

  281. as part of the teaching,

  282. but by the way,

  283. baptism doesn't do it in itself,

  284. right?

  285. That baptism is an outward act

  286. to signify

  287. what's something that,

  288. that's something

  289. that only God can do,

  290. right?

  291. And because of the way

  292. human beings are,

  293. that when we plunge

  294. into Christ

  295. and are immersed in him,

  296. he comes into us.

  297. That human beings,

  298. in a sense,

  299. are like sponges.

  300. If you put a sponge

  301. and immerse it in water,

  302. the water goes in the sponge.

  303. And in the same way,

  304. Christ enters into us.

  305. And this is the profound

  306. and wonderful teaching

  307. of the Bible

  308. about what happens

  309. to us

  310. when we are in Christ.

  311. But then the question is,

  312. how do we grow?

  313. Like,

  314. how is it that we grow?

  315. And what is it

  316. that we're going to become?

  317. And this is

  318. where we go back

  319. to my very, very

  320. mind-bogglingly

  321. unprofound question,

  322. how does an apple

  323. become an orange?

  324. And the fact is,

  325. an apple can never

  326. become an orange.

  327. But look again

  328. at verse 4.

  329. Here's the

  330. apple-orange analogy

  331. coming to completion.

  332. When Christ,

  333. your life,

  334. is revealed,

  335. then you also

  336. will be revealed

  337. with him

  338. in glory.

  339. C.S. Lewis

  340. has a very, very

  341. wonderful analogy

  342. where he talks about

  343. the eternal weight

  344. of glory.

  345. He's really looking

  346. at that wonderful part

  347. in 2 Corinthians

  348. where it talks about

  349. how God is preparing

  350. ordinary people

  351. like you and me

  352. for an eternal

  353. weight of glory.

  354. And C.S. Lewis

  355. has this wonderful

  356. analogy that if we

  357. were to see now,

  358. and I'll just pick

  359. Andrew.

  360. He's a good guy.

  361. Maybe there's lots

  362. of different ways

  363. we'd like to be

  364. more like Andrew.

  365. But if we were to see

  366. Andrew,

  367. if all of a sudden

  368. we were to see

  369. Andrew the way

  370. he will be

  371. when verse 4

  372. is actually true

  373. in history,

  374. there will be a time

  375. when Andrew

  376. will see Jesus

  377. face to face.

  378. And then Andrew

  379. will be revealed

  380. with Jesus in glory.

  381. And we'll know

  382. it's Andrew.

  383. But if we were

  384. to see Andrew

  385. like this

  386. in the future

  387. right now,

  388. all of us

  389. would in fact

  390. have to shield

  391. our eyes

  392. from his glory

  393. and we'd all

  394. be tempted

  395. to fall down

  396. and worship him.

  397. On one hand,

  398. Andrew is still Andrew.

  399. I mean,

  400. the Bible has

  401. this very precious

  402. promise

  403. that in heaven

  404. we'll recognize

  405. each other.

  406. You know,

  407. in the story

  408. of Jesus

  409. at the Transfiguration,

  410. people could recognize

  411. Moses and Elijah.

  412. You don't lose

  413. your identity.

  414. But what happens

  415. when verse 4

  416. becomes true,

  417. the title of this sermon

  418. is The True

  419. and Better

  420. Authentic You.

  421. The True

  422. and Better

  423. Authentic You.

  424. And in some way then,

  425. sorry Andrew,

  426. I'm going to keep using you.

  427. I'm saying your name

  428. too much to take out

  429. of the audio

  430. and it'll also be,

  431. of course,

  432. on this.

  433. So I'm just using you

  434. as an example

  435. just because you're

  436. sort of over there

  437. when I look towards

  438. the camera,

  439. I can see you

  440. and I know you can

  441. handle it.

  442. But, you know,

  443. if you had Andrew's kids

  444. on a separate thing,

  445. Andrew wasn't around,

  446. I bet Andrew's kids

  447. could imitate Andrew.

  448. I mean,

  449. my kids do that to me.

  450. Sometimes a bit embarrassing

  451. to see how my kids

  452. imitate me

  453. and I think,

  454. I do that?

  455. Really?

  456. I don't do that

  457. and then they imitate me.

  458. Really?

  459. I do that?

  460. And the quirks

  461. of Andrew

  462. will be revealed

  463. and you'll know

  464. it's Andrew

  465. but it is a very

  466. different Andrew.

  467. He is a very

  468. different Andrew

  469. to be revealed

  470. with Christ in glory

  471. and that's the destiny

  472. of every person

  473. who puts their faith

  474. in Christ.

  475. And now you get

  476. a bit of a sense.

  477. You see,

  478. if all of the different

  479. texts in the Bible

  480. that call us

  481. to holiness,

  482. to call us

  483. to be more like Christ,

  484. Christ,

  485. well what's that

  486. telling us to do?

  487. It's telling us

  488. to do certain things

  489. and stop doing

  490. other things

  491. so we can become,

  492. it's actually part

  493. of the steps

  494. on this journey

  495. that will culminate

  496. with us being revealed

  497. with Jesus.

  498. And you realize

  499. that God

  500. isn't making you

  501. a better apple,

  502. he's making you

  503. into something

  504. very different.

  505. In fact,

  506. here's where the analogy

  507. breaks down

  508. and I'm going to give you

  509. a true and better analogy

  510. than the one I heard.

  511. A couple of weeks ago

  512. when I was trying

  513. to illustrate something

  514. in the book of Colossians

  515. that happened to also

  516. be Thanksgiving Sunday,

  517. those online saw it

  518. in a different week

  519. but those who are

  520. watching the service

  521. or entering into the service

  522. I should say,

  523. not watching but entering

  524. into the worship

  525. through the online,

  526. hopefully you're able

  527. to see that there were

  528. cut roses across

  529. the front of the stage.

  530. And I use the analogy

  531. that the Bible,

  532. what the Bible says

  533. about human beings

  534. is that every human being

  535. is in a sense

  536. a cut rose.

  537. Cut roses are dying.

  538. They look beautiful.

  539. They smell nice

  540. and they look beautiful.

  541. And you can do

  542. certain types of things

  543. like put them in water,

  544. keep them in the right temperature,

  545. give them a little bit

  546. of cut flower food

  547. that will keep them

  548. looking nice

  549. a little bit longer

  550. and fresh

  551. a little bit longer.

  552. But at the end of the day,

  553. they're separated

  554. from the ground.

  555. They're separated

  556. from the rest of the roots

  557. and they're dying.

  558. They look beautiful

  559. but they're dying.

  560. And so what happens

  561. in grace

  562. when you put your faith

  563. and trust in Christ

  564. is you're connected

  565. to your creator.

  566. I looked it up in Google

  567. so it must be true

  568. because of course

  569. nothing in social media

  570. as we've discovered

  571. from Facebook and Twitter

  572. over the last week

  573. ever misdirects you.

  574. It only gives you

  575. the truth.

  576. But according to YouTube,

  577. you can't take cut roses

  578. and graft them back

  579. onto a rose bush.

  580. It's just impossible.

  581. So it points actually

  582. to the miracle of grace

  583. that God makes you alive.

  584. That God takes you

  585. a cut rose

  586. and by faith

  587. and trust in Jesus,

  588. God connects you

  589. back to the source of life.

  590. But here we see

  591. something very,

  592. very different.

  593. It isn't just that God

  594. is making better cut roses.

  595. If every human being

  596. outside of Christ

  597. is a cut rose,

  598. in Colossians 3,

    Colossians 3:4

  599. verse 4,

  600. you're a sequoia.

  601. You're a full-grown sequoia.

  602. One of those trees

  603. that are so old

  604. and so big,

  605. you can cut a hole

  606. in the bottom

  607. and drive a car through.

  608. So how can I cut rose?

  609. You see,

  610. so here's the thing,

  611. and this is the big

  612. shocking thing to me

  613. that really just brought

  614. things home to me

  615. in a very,

  616. very different way.

  617. And actually,

  618. if you could just put up

  619. the first point,

  620. Andrew,

  621. there's actually,

  622. there's only one point.

  623. There's only one thing

  624. that I want you

  625. to try to remember.

  626. The best thing of all

  627. would be if you memorized

  628. verses 1 to 4.

  629. But I've tried to summarize

  630. verses 1 to 4

  631. and the message of it is,

  632. in light of his death

  633. upon the cross for you,

  634. set your mind on Christ

  635. in all his risen,

  636. sovereign,

  637. Trinitarian glory.

  638. It's as if you've been

  639. raised with Christ

  640. and Christ is seated

  641. at the right hand

  642. of God the Father.

  643. There's the resurrection,

  644. there's the death,

  645. you've died with Christ.

  646. That's also in that text.

  647. It's in verse 3,

  648. for you have died

  649. with Christ

  650. and your life

  651. is hidden with Christ

  652. and God.

  653. When Christ,

  654. who is your life,

  655. appears and you will

  656. also appear with him

  657. in glory.

  658. And verse 2 is the command,

  659. set your mind,

  660. not on things that are above,

  661. not on wispy things,

  662. like not on just

  663. little visions

  664. about what rivers

  665. will look in heaven.

  666. No,

  667. you set your mind

  668. on Jesus,

  669. on Christ.

  670. And you set your mind

  671. on Christ

  672. where he's seated,

  673. which means he's ruling,

  674. he's conquered,

  675. it's accomplished.

  676. It's a picture

  677. of sovereignty

  678. and it's a picture

  679. of him at union

  680. with the Father,

  681. his Trinitarian glory.

  682. And so the command is,

  683. in light of his death

  684. upon the cross for you,

  685. set your mind

  686. on Christ

  687. and all his risen,

  688. sovereign Trinitarian glory.

  689. But here's the thing,

  690. I'm going to unpack

  691. this idea a little bit more

  692. in the next couple

  693. of moments.

  694. If you understand

  695. that the end

  696. of the story

  697. isn't that you will be

  698. a far better cut rose

  699. than you are today,

  700. but you're going

  701. to be a sequoia,

  702. then you realize

  703. that only God

  704. can do that.

  705. So all of the texts

  706. in the Bible

  707. that talk about you

  708. becoming more like Jesus

  709. or more Christ-like

  710. or more holy,

  711. what are those doing?

  712. They're all talking

  713. about the day

  714. when you were

  715. with Jesus

  716. and you were in

  717. the new heaven

  718. and the new earth

  719. and were the life

  720. of the Father

  721. to the Son

  722. and the Holy Spirit.

  723. That life

  724. is the life

  725. that makes you alive

  726. and their love

  727. is the love

  728. that inflames your heart

  729. that you just long

  730. to enter into

  731. more and more

  732. and more and more

  733. for all eternity,

  734. not only by yourself

  735. with others.

  736. And that holiness

  737. is becoming

  738. more like Christ,

  739. more fit for that.

  740. And then you realize

  741. it's describing

  742. a sequoia

  743. and you're a cut flower

  744. and that sequoia

  745. is your final destiny.

  746. And so much

  747. of what self-help is

  748. and so all of the things

  749. that were being talked about

  750. in chapter 2,

  751. verses 15 to 23,

  752. 16 to 23,

  753. about asceticism

  754. and devotion

  755. and control

  756. and in tune with nature,

  757. all of those things

  758. are just better ways

  759. to be a better cut flower.

  760. And God wants

  761. to turn you into sequoia.

  762. And that means

  763. all you can do

  764. is place yourself

  765. in a posture of obedience

  766. where God can do the work

  767. that only he can do,

  768. that grace can do the work

  769. that only grace can do.

  770. Give you a bit of an analogy for it.

  771. It's not an analogy,

  772. it's a story.

  773. You know the very first miracle

  774. that Jesus performed

  775. and the very first miracle

  776. that Jesus performed

  777. is the story of Jesus

  778. turning water into wine.

  779. And in that story,

  780. you can go back

  781. and read it in John 2

  782. if you want to read it

  783. later on for yourself.

  784. But it's a very simple,

  785. very simple story.

  786. Jesus and his disciples

  787. had been invited to a wedding

  788. and a wedding feast

  789. in those days

  790. would go for seven days

  791. and it was a great faux pas,

  792. an unbelievably terrible faux pas

  793. to run out of wine.

  794. And so Jesus' mother

  795. must have been related

  796. or had some connection

  797. to the people

  798. putting on the wedding reception.

  799. And she's worried

  800. about what's going on

  801. and all frustrated

  802. with what's going on

  803. and in the midst

  804. of her worry

  805. and frustration,

  806. she has a couple

  807. of sharp words to Jesus

  808. and say,

  809. Jesus, do something.

  810. And then Jesus says,

  811. and there's a whole other bit

  812. of the sermon about

  813. it's not my time,

  814. and then she just says

  815. to the servants,

  816. whatever Jesus tells you

  817. to do, do it.

  818. And so Jesus,

  819. when his mother is left,

  820. says, okay,

  821. take these big stone water jars

  822. that will hold literally,

  823. you know,

  824. hundreds and hundreds

  825. and hundreds

  826. of liters of water,

  827. fill them with water,

  828. and take them

  829. to the director

  830. of the feast.

  831. And they do

  832. what Jesus says

  833. and by the time

  834. they put in the water,

  835. water,

  836. water,

  837. water,

  838. water,

  839. look at it,

  840. water,

  841. well,

  842. Jesus said to fill it

  843. with water,

  844. I filled it with water,

  845. trudge it over,

  846. and by the time

  847. it gets to the master

  848. of the feast,

  849. it's the best wine

  850. that they've ever had.

  851. Now let me tell you this,

  852. I can tell you all week

  853. to fill stone jars

  854. with water,

  855. it'll never turn into wine.

  856. I can tell you that all week,

  857. it doesn't do it.

  858. But what happened?

  859. Only God can turn

  860. the water into wine.

  861. That's one of the very

  862. first proofs

  863. of Jesus' divinity,

  864. that Jesus turns

  865. the water into wine.

  866. It's one of the story-picture ways

  867. whereby his divinity

  868. is portrayed.

  869. But it's an act of grace

  870. that only God can do.

  871. But what's the posture

  872. that's needed

  873. for God to do

  874. what only God can do

  875. is to be obedient

  876. to something

  877. that he's provided

  878. and asked you to do.

  879. And when you put yourself

  880. in a posture of obedience

  881. to something

  882. that God has asked you to do,

  883. you don't really know

  884. what he's going to do.

  885. And part of that is

  886. because I'm completely

  887. and utterly addicted

  888. to being a better-cut flower.

  889. I am deeply addicted

  890. to being a better-cut flower.

  891. And so God keeps

  892. surprising me in my life

  893. because he has no interest

  894. in making me

  895. a better-cut flower.

  896. He's making me

  897. into sequoia.

  898. He's making me

  899. into a being

  900. that will one day

  901. be revealed

  902. in the presence of Jesus,

  903. in all of Jesus'

  904. risen,

  905. sovereign,

  906. trinitarian glory.

  907. So it is

  908. with this very,

  909. very simple command.

  910. If you could now put up,

  911. here's in a sense

  912. what the big picture is

  913. to how Paul

  914. is going to begin

  915. to describe this.

  916. And every week

  917. it's the same type

  918. of an idea

  919. that we're looking

  920. at the means of grace.

  921. It's not the complete

  922. means of grace.

  923. It's like one of the means

  924. of grace is Bible reading.

  925. Like reading doesn't

  926. actually change

  927. or transform you,

  928. but the Bible,

  929. God wants us

  930. to read his word.

  931. And when we read his word,

  932. it's like filling

  933. the jars of water

  934. with water

  935. so that God

  936. can turn

  937. the water

  938. into wine.

  939. Like another means

  940. of grace

  941. is actually

  942. being part

  943. of an online service

  944. or part of a local church.

  945. We all know,

  946. like going to a hockey game

  947. doesn't change you.

  948. Going to a reading group

  949. doesn't change you.

  950. Just hanging out

  951. with other people

  952. doesn't change you.

  953. But God has said

  954. that one of the means

  955. of grace

  956. is that Christians

  957. gather together

  958. in public worship

  959. and when you do that

  960. out of obedience,

  961. it's filling the water pots

  962. with water.

  963. And what is communion?

  964. You can snack

  965. on crackers

  966. and juice

  967. or wine

  968. all day

  969. and if you did,

  970. all it would do

  971. is give you probably

  972. diabetes

  973. and extra weight

  974. and an alcohol problem.

  975. Drinking wine

  976. doesn't do anything

  977. for you.

  978. nor does eating

  979. unleavened bread.

  980. But Jesus told us

  981. to regularly

  982. gather

  983. and have the bread

  984. and have the wine

  985. and that's

  986. filling the pots

  987. with water

  988. so Jesus

  989. can turn the water

  990. into wine.

  991. And Paul

  992. sets before us

  993. another set

  994. of means of grace,

  995. different aspects

  996. of postures

  997. that we enter

  998. into

  999. out of obedience

  1000. because Christ

1001. has said to do it.

1002. And one of the things

  1003. we're going to say,

  1004. there's a bit of effort

  1005. in it,

1006. but one of the things

  1007. we're going to see

  1008. and the reason

  1009. and well,

  1010. here's the big picture.

1011. The first one is this.

  1012. It was what happened

  1013. in chapter two

  1014. and it's a question.

  1015. Will I grow me

  1016. or will the Lord

  1017. grow me?

  1018. That's the first thing.

  1019. That was the first,

  1020. that's the big question.

  1021. In a sense,

  1022. when I wake up,

  1023. well,

1024. not when I first wake up

1025. because when I first wake up

  1026. I can barely function.

  1027. After I've started

  1028. to have some caffeine

  1029. in my system

  1030. and some toast

  1031. and I can start

  1032. to function,

  1033. the question before me

1034. for the rest of the day

1035. is will I grow me

  1036. or will the Lord

  1037. grow me?

1038. Will I commit this day?

  1039. Will I double down

  1040. this day

  1041. and set my mind

1042. on my cut flower project?

  1043. Or will I

  1044. let the Lord

  1045. grow me?

  1046. And this isn't

  1047. a couch potato

  1048. approach to growth

  1049. by the way

  1050. because there's going

  1051. to be next things

  1052. that happen

  1053. but that's the fundamental

  1054. question.

  1055. Will I grow me

  1056. or will I let

  1057. the Lord grow me?

1058. And then the second thing

  1059. which is we're looking

  1060. at today is this.

  1061. Set your mind

  1062. on Christ

  1063. crucified and risen

1064. or as I've put it

1065. in light of his death

  1066. upon the cross

  1067. for you

  1068. set your mind

  1069. on Christ

  1070. in all his risen

  1071. sovereign

  1072. Trinitarian glory.

1073. In light of his death

  1074. upon the cross

  1075. for you

  1076. set your mind

  1077. on Christ

  1078. in all his risen

  1079. sovereign

  1080. Trinitarian glory.

1081. And then the third thing

  1082. which is what we're

  1083. going to look at

  1084. next week

  1085. which is verses

  1086. five to nine

  1087. is put off

  1088. sin.

  1089. These are all

  1090. aspects of the same

  1091. type of

  1092. the same

  1093. it's an aspect

  1094. of the means

  1095. of grace.

  1096. Put off

  1097. sin.

  1098. I'll talk a little bit

  1099. more about that

  1100. but we'll talk

  1101. in a moment

  1102. but we're going to

  1103. talk about more

  1104. next week.

  1105. And then the fourth

  1106. thing

  1107. which is verses

  1108. ten to fourteen

  1109. is put on

  1110. virtue.

  1111. For those of you

  1112. who are very

  1113. very concrete

  1114. in your thinking

  1115. it's really

  1116. as a matter

  1117. of in a sense

  1118. you know

  1119. the question

  1120. is posed

  1121. to me

1122. not just in the morning

  1123. but as the day

  1124. goes through

  1125. and as the week

  1126. goes through

  1127. am I going to

  1128. pursue

  1129. a cut flower

  1130. project

  1131. or am I going

  1132. to let God

  1133. grow me

  1134. into sequoia?

  1135. Will I

  1136. grow me

  1137. or will I

  1138. let the Lord

  1139. grow me?

  1140. Okay well the first

  1141. thing that he's

  1142. asked me to do

  1143. is to set my

  1144. mind in light

  1145. of the crucifixion

  1146. this death

  1147. upon the cross

  1148. to set my

  1149. mind on Jesus

  1150. in all his

  1151. risen sovereign

  1152. Trinitarian glory.

  1153. And the other

  1154. thing he's going

1155. to want me to do

  1156. is to like

  1157. I'm not going

  1158. to take my

  1159. shirt off

  1160. but take off

  1161. these pieces

  1162. of clothing

  1163. that I have

  1164. that are really

  1165. sin.

  1166. And then

  1167. the other thing

  1168. he wants me

  1169. to do

  1170. is to put

  1171. on

  1172. virtue

  1173. as defined

  1174. by the

  1175. Bible.

  1176. That's what

  1177. we're going

  1178. to look at

  1179. the following

  1180. week in

  1181. verses 10

  1182. to 14.

  1183. And then

  1184. the next

  1185. two steps

  1186. we're going

  1187. to look

  1188. at in

  1189. one sermon

  1190. and then

  1191. the next

  1192. step is

  1193. to let

  1194. the peace

  1195. of Christ

  1196. rule in

  1197. my heart

  1198. to let

  1199. Christ's

  1200. word

  1201. rule

  1202. in my

  1203. heart

  1204. and my

  1205. life

  1206. to let

  1207. it

  1208. to let

  1209. it happen.

  1210. And then

  1211. the final

  1212. thing

  1213. is to do

  1214. everything

  1215. and anything.

  1216. It isn't

  1217. saying just

  1218. do religious

  1219. things.

  1220. It says

  1221. do everything

  1222. and everything.

  1223. Do those

  1224. of you who

  1225. work in

  1226. the civil

  1227. service

  1228. do your

  1229. day.

  1230. Those of

  1231. you who

  1232. are in

  1233. politics

  1234. do your

  1235. day in

  1236. politics.

  1237. Those in

  1238. business

  1239. those stay

  1240. at home

  1241. moms or

  1242. stay at home

  1243. dads or

  1244. retired

  1245. people do

  1246. everything

  1247. that has

  1248. to be done

  1249. today

  1250. to the

  1251. honor and

  1252. glory of

  1253. God giving

  1254. thanks

  1255. to him.

  1256. And that's

  1257. what Paul

  1258. sets out

  1259. between

  1260. chapter 2

  1261. verse 16

  1262. and chapter

  1263. 3

  1264. verse 17.

  1265. And we're

  1266. going to look

  1267. at a bit

  1268. of them.

  1269. Every week

  1270. this is going

  1271. to be up

  1272. here so we

  1273. can remember

  1274. the whole

  1275. picture.

  1276. So the

  1277. first question

  1278. is will I

  1279. grow me

  1280. or will

  1281. the Lord

  1282. grow me?

  1283. Will I

  1284. pursue my

  1285. cut flower

  1286. project being

  1287. the best

  1288. cut flower

  1289. I can

  1290. possibly be?

  1291. I'm going

  1292. to be the

  1293. fittest

  1294. cut flower,

  1295. the richest

  1296. cut flower.

  1297. I'm going

  1298. to be the

  1299. longest lasting

  1300. cut flower

  1301. I can

  1302. possibly be.

  1303. Will I

  1304. let the

  1305. Lord

  1306. grow me?

  1307. And the

  1308. first step

  1309. in this

  1310. little model

  1311. of letting

  1312. the Lord

  1313. grow me

  1314. is to

  1315. set my

  1316. mind.

  1317. In light

  1318. of Christ

  1319. and his

  1320. death upon

  1321. the cross

  1322. for me

  1323. to set

  1324. my mind

  1325. on Jesus

  1326. on Christ

  1327. in all

  1328. his risen

  1329. sovereign

  1330. trinitarian

  1331. glory.

  1332. Now here's

  1333. one of the

  1334. interesting

  1335. things about

  1336. this is

  1337. that setting

  1338. all can set

  1339. their minds

  1340. on things

  1341. because all

  1342. of us do.

  1343. A couple

  1344. of weeks

  1345. ago one

  1346. of our

  1347. youngest

  1348. grandchildren

  1349. we got

  1350. a little

  1351. video

  1352. of him

  1353. and he's

  1354. just learned

  1355. how to

  1356. stand.

  1357. He can't

  1358. do anything

  1359. other than

  1360. stand.

  1361. But he had

  1362. this huge

  1363. desire to

  1364. pick,

  1365. I can't

  1366. remember what

  1367. the object,

  1368. it was to

  1369. pick this

  1370. object up.

  1371. Here he is,

  1372. a little

  1373. tiny six

  1374. month old

  1375. kid and

  1376. his mind

  1377. was set

  1378. on this.

  1379. And all

  1380. of us who

  1381. have young

  1382. kids or

  1383. who've seen

  1384. young kids,

  1385. young kids

  1386. can get

  1387. their mind

  1388. set on

  1389. something.

  1390. In fact,

  1391. we've had

  1392. some times

  1393. when the

  1394. kids,

  1395. by the way,

  1396. today,

  1397. every kid

  1398. here should

  1399. get a

  1400. chocolate bar

  1401. afterwards.

  1402. They've been

  1403. so fantastically

  1404. behaved and

  1405. parents are

  1406. saying,

  1407. no, don't

  1408. give them

  1409. chocolate bars

  1410. and I have

  1411. to live

  1412. with them

  1413. on chocolate

  1414. highs for

  1415. the rest

  1416. of the day.

  1417. But they've

  1418. been very,

  1419. very well

  1420. behaved.

  1421. But we all

  1422. know that a

  1423. kid can all

  1424. of a sudden

  1425. go into a

  1426. complete screaming

  1427. fit in church.

  1428. Why?

  1429. They have

  1430. their mind

  1431. set on

  1432. something and

  1433. their mom

  1434. or their dad

  1435. doesn't give

  1436. it.

  1437. And their

  1438. response is

  1439. to explode.

  1440. And one of

  1441. the reasons

  1442. that all of

  1443. this is so

  1444. that it's in

  1445. fact a normal

  1446. human thing

  1447. that we set

  1448. our minds.

  1449. And here's

  1450. one of the

  1451. things that

  1452. we discover.

  1453. This is why

  1454. I say it's

  1455. not that we

  1456. don't do any

  1457. effort.

  1458. It's not a

  1459. couch potato

  1460. thing.

  1461. I'm just going

  1462. to be here

  1463. like this is

  1464. so nice.

  1465. This is

  1466. spiritual growth.

  1467. I just sit

  1468. on a couch.

  1469. I do nothing

  1470. except eat

  1471. potato chips

  1472. all day and

  1473. God grows me

  1474. into sequoia.

  1475. No,

  1476. no,

  1477. no,

  1478. no.

  1479. There is

  1480. some effort

  1481. because the

  1482. effort is if

  1483. you start to

  1484. set your

  1485. mind on

  1486. Christ,

  1487. if I come

  1488. before God

  1489. and say I

  1490. want to set

  1491. my mind on

  1492. Christ,

  1493. I start to

  1494. realize there's

  1495. a bit of a

  1496. struggle because

  1497. the fact of

  1498. the matter is I

  1499. already have my

  1500. mind set on

  1501. different things.

  1502. So do you.

  1503. Your mind can

  1504. be set on

  1505. lust,

  1506. can be set on

  1507. anger,

  1508. can be set on

  1509. revenge,

  1510. it could be set

  1511. on your God

  1512. project,

  1513. it could be set

  1514. upon being

  1515. rich,

  1516. it can be

  1517. set upon

  1518. fears,

  1519. it can be

  1520. set upon

  1521. your profound

  1522. insecurity,

  1523. younger people

  1524. seem to be

  1525. getting smarter

  1526. and better

  1527. than me and

  1528. it's set on

  1529. my insecurity,

  1530. it's set on

  1531. my failure,

  1532. it's set on

  1533. my doom,

  1534. it's set on

  1535. getting that

  1536. girl,

  1537. getting that

  1538. job,

  1539. getting that

  1540. loan,

  1541. getting that

  1542. house,

  1543. getting that

  1544. car.

  1545. It's only

  1546. when we want

  1547. to set our

  1548. minds in

  1549. Christ that we

  1550. discover that

  1551. that mind is

  1552. already set on

  1553. all sorts of

  1554. things.

  1555. And that's

  1556. one of the

  1557. reasons we

  1558. have to put

  1559. off.

  1560. It's because

  1561. my mind is

  1562. set on that

  1563. lust,

  1564. that anger,

  1565. that greed.

  1566. And I say,

  1567. oh Lord,

  1568. that's part of

  1569. my cut flower

  1570. project.

  1571. Lord,

  1572. help me set

  1573. my mind on

  1574. you,

  1575. in all your

  1576. risen

  1577. Trinitarian

  1578. glory and

  1579. sovereignty,

  1580. and help me

  1581. to put off

  1582. that anger,

  1583. put off

  1584. that boasting,

  1585. put off

  1586. that pride,

  1587. put off

  1588. that greed.

  1589. Just one

  1590. other little

  1591. bit of an

  1592. analogy.

  1593. You see,

  1594. this,

  1595. by the way,

  1596. helps us to

  1597. understand a

  1598. little bit

  1599. about the

  1600. weird way

  1601. that God

  1602. seems to

  1603. work with

  1604. us.

  1605. You see,

  1606. and it's

  1607. one of the

  1608. mistakes

  1609. churches make

  1610. when they

  1611. say five

  1612. steps to

  1613. financial health

  1614. according to

  1615. the wisdom

  1616. of the

  1617. Bible.

  1618. Well,

  1619. that implies

  1620. that God

  1621. wants you

  1622. to be a

  1623. better cut

  1624. flower.

  1625. But if God

  1626. doesn't want

  1627. you to be a

  1628. cut flower,

  1629. well,

  1630. he's going to

  1631. sort money out

  1632. in your life,

  1633. but it's going

  1634. to be like

  1635. in a weird

  1636. way.

  1637. And maybe

  1638. he'll make

  1639. you very rich,

  1640. by the way.

  1641. I mean,

  1642. God has

  1643. different things.

  1644. He knows

  1645. how we're all

  1646. wired and

  1647. will be wired

  1648. in different

  1649. types of

  1650. ways.

  1651. But at the

  1652. end of the

  1653. day,

  1654. as we all

  1655. know,

  1656. we make

  1657. money thinking

  1658. money will

  1659. serve us,

  1660. but what

  1661. always happens

  1662. is that we

  1663. serve money.

  1664. And God

  1665. doesn't want

  1666. to make us

  1667. a better

  1668. cut flower

  1669. where we're

  1670. way better

  1671. at serving

  1672. money than

  1673. other people.

  1674. He wants

  1675. us to be

  1676. a completely

  1677. different type

  1678. of person

  1679. where money

  1680. isn't what

  1681. our minds

  1682. are set on.

  1683. It doesn't

  1684. mean we

  1685. don't,

  1686. you know,

  1687. count our

  1688. change or

  1689. look at our

  1690. bank statements,

  1691. but actually

  1692. what he wants

  1693. to do is

  1694. to make us

  1695. into the

  1696. type of

  1697. person that

  1698. generosity

  1699. is what

  1700. drives us

  1701. and governs

  1702. us.

  1703. Like what

  1704. drives us

  1705. and governs

  1706. us is a

  1707. profound

  1708. sense of

  1709. trust and

  1710. confidence in

  1711. him.

  1712. And that

  1713. profound

  1714. trust and

  1715. confidence at

  1716. the end of

  1717. our story

  1718. isn't being a

  1719. better cut

  1720. flower,

  1721. but the

  1722. end of

  1723. our story

  1724. is that we

  1725. will die

  1726. and appear

  1727. before Jesus

  1728. and that we

  1729. will be

  1730. revealed

  1731. in glory,

  1732. participating

  1733. and drinking

  1734. and breathing

  1735. the love

  1736. of the

  1737. father for

  1738. the son

  1739. and the

  1740. son of

  1741. the father,

  1742. consuming

  1743. their goodness,

  1744. their beauty,

  1745. and as we

  1746. consume their

  1747. beauty and

  1748. their truth

  1749. and their

  1750. goodness and

  1751. their justice

  1752. and their

  1753. mercy and

  1754. their kindness,

  1755. we are

  1756. changed from

  1757. one degree

  1758. of glory to

  1759. another.

  1760. And just

  1761. as the

  1762. father and

  1763. the son

  1764. don't think

  1765. they have

  1766. to grasp

  1767. on anything,

  1768. but that what

  1769. fundamentally

  1770. characterizes them

  1771. as a

  1772. confidence in

  1773. their giving

  1774. and receiving

  1775. and a

  1776. confidence then

  1777. to be

  1778. unendingly

  1779. generous,

  1780. that's what

  1781. God wants

  1782. to form us

  1783. into.

  1784. Where

  1785. generosity

  1786. and confidence

  1787. is the air

  1788. we begin to

  1789. breathe as

  1790. we prepare

  1791. to be a

  1792. sequoia for

  1793. all eternity.

  1794. So it's a

  1795. very interesting

  1796. thing,

  1797. a mentally

  1798. handicapped

  1799. person can

  1800. set their

  1801. minds on

  1802. things,

  1803. little babies

  1804. can,

  1805. and all of

  1806. us are

  1807. doing it

  1808. all the

  1809. time.

  1810. And God

  1811. is saying,

  1812. lay down

  1813. what your

  1814. mind is

  1815. set on.

  1816. In light

  1817. of Jesus

  1818. and his

  1819. death upon

  1820. the cross

  1821. for you,

  1822. set your

  1823. mind on

  1824. Christ in

  1825. all his

  1826. risen,

  1827. sovereign,

  1828. Trinitarian

  1829. glory.

  1830. glory.

  1831. You're

  1832. going to

  1833. come to

  1834. realize that

  1835. you keep

  1836. forgetting,

  1837. and you're

  1838. going to

  1839. come and

  1840. realize that

  1841. you already

  1842. have your

  1843. mind on

  1844. a whole lot

  1845. of other

  1846. things,

  1847. but,

  1848. and there's

  1849. nothing,

  1850. you know,

  1851. the mere fact

  1852. that we all

  1853. set our

  1854. minds on

  1855. things show

  1856. that there

  1857. is nothing

  1858. magical about

  1859. setting your

  1860. mind on

  1861. something.

  1862. The heart

  1863. of all of

  1864. this is that

  1865. Jesus has

  1866. told us to

  1867. do it,

  1868. so that when

  1869. we begin to

  1870. develop the

  1871. habits through

  1872. the day,

  1873. and at

  1874. different times

  1875. in the day,

  1876. to say,

  1877. Lord,

  1878. help me to

  1879. set my

  1880. mind on

  1881. Christ right

  1882. now,

  1883. in all his

  1884. risen,

  1885. sovereign,

  1886. Trinitarian

  1887. glory.

  1888. What are you

  1889. doing?

  1890. You're putting

  1891. water in the

  1892. stone pots.

  1893. That's all

  1894. you're doing.

  1895. You're putting

  1896. water into the

  1897. stone pots.

  1898. It's a means

  1899. of grace.

  1900. It's a means

  1901. of grace.

  1902. The wonderful

  1903. thing about

  1904. all of this

  1905. is that we're

  1906. going to

  1907. fail.

  1908. I fail,

  1909. you fail.

  1910. We all

  1911. have to

  1912. pray for

  1913. each other.

  1914. That's part

  1915. of why

  1916. church is

  1917. so important.

  1918. But God

  1919. sets before

  1920. us these

  1921. wonderful

  1922. means of

  1923. grace.

  1924. Set your

  1925. minds in

  1926. light of

  1927. Jesus and

  1928. his death

  1929. upon the

  1930. cross and

  1931. his for

  1932. you.

  1933. Set your

  1934. mind on

  1935. Christ in

  1936. all his

  1937. risen,

  1938. sovereign,

  1939. Trinitarian

  1940. glory.

  1941. And as

  1942. you face

  1943. the challenges

  1944. of the

  1945. day, as

  1946. you face

  1947. your insecurities,

  1948. your fears,

  1949. your successes,

  1950. your failures,

  1951. remember this.

  1952. You are now

  1953. walking, when

  1954. you put your

  1955. faith and

  1956. trust in

  1957. Christ, you

  1958. are now

  1959. walking on a,

  1960. you are now

  1961. in a new

  1962. story.

  1963. And the

  1964. end of your

  1965. story, the

  1966. end of your

  1967. story, not

  1968. because of

  1969. your excellencies

  1970. or your

  1971. successes, the

  1972. end of your

  1973. story,

  1974. is you

  1975. are revealed

  1976. in the

  1977. presence of

  1978. Jesus,

  1979. completely and

  1980. utterly transformed

  1981. for all

  1982. eternity.

  1983. That is the

  1984. end of your

  1985. story.

  1986. I invite you

  1987. to stand.

  1988. I think I

  1989. forgot to ask

  1990. you to put

  1991. the means of

  1992. the general

  1993. thanksgiving up,

  1994. but that's

  1995. fine.

  1996. We'll just

  1997. pray.

  1998. Oh, no, you

  1999. do.

  2000. You do have

  2001. it.

  2002. Good for you,

  2003. Andrew.

  2004. Way to go.

  2005. Let's say

  2006. this.

  2007. You'll

  2008. notice, by

  2009. the way,

  2010. this phrase

  2011. means of

  2012. grace is

  2013. actually in

  2014. this very

  2015. ancient product

  2016. of the

  2017. English

  2018. Reformation.

  2019. So I

  2020. invite you

  2021. to pray

  2022. this with

  2023. me, and

  2024. then I'll

  2025. just say a

  2026. very brief

  2027. prayer in

  2028. closing.

  2029. Let's

  2030. pray.

  2031. Almighty

  2032. God,

  2033. Father of

  2034. all mercies,

  2035. we are

  2036. unworthy

  2037. servants to

  2038. give you

  2039. most humble

  2040. and hearty

  2041. thanks for

  2042. all your

  2043. goodness and

  2044. loving kindness

  2045. to us and

  2046. to all

  2047. people.

  2048. We bless

  2049. you for

  2050. our creation,

  2051. preservation,

  2052. and all the

  2053. blessings of

  2054. this life,

  2055. but above all

  2056. for your

  2057. inestimable love

  2058. in the

  2059. redemption of

  2060. the world by

  2061. our Lord

  2062. Jesus Christ,

  2063. for the means

  2064. of grace and

  2065. for the hope

  2066. of glory.

  2067. and we

  2068. beseech you,

  2069. give us that

  2070. due sense of

  2071. all your

  2072. mercies,

  2073. that our

  2074. hearts may be

  2075. unfeignedly

  2076. thankful,

  2077. and that we

  2078. show forth

  2079. your praise

  2080. not only with

  2081. our lips,

  2082. but in our

  2083. lives,

  2084. by giving up

  2085. ourselves to

  2086. your service,

  2087. and by walking

  2088. before you in

  2089. holiness and

  2090. righteousness all

  2091. our days,

  2092. through Jesus

  2093. Christ our

  2094. Lord,

  2095. to whom with

  2096. you and the

  2097. Holy Spirit be

  2098. all honor and

  2099. glory,

  2100. world without

  2101. end.

  2102. Amen.

  2103. Father,

  2104. help us to

  2105. grasp the

  2106. significance of

  2107. the means of

  2108. grace.

  2109. Help us to

  2110. die to our

  2111. cut rose

  2112. project,

  2113. and Father,

  2114. to put

  2115. ourselves in

  2116. postures of

  2117. obedience as

  2118. you prepare us

  2119. for glory.

  2120. And we ask,

  2121. Father, that you

  2122. would help us to

  2123. set our minds on

  2124. Christ.

  2125. In light of the

  2126. cross, set our

  2127. minds on Christ

  2128. and all his

  2129. risen sovereign

  2130. trinitarian

  2131. glory.

  2132. Help us to

  2133. do it today,

  2134. this afternoon,

  2135. tomorrow, and

  2136. the next every

  2137. day until we

  2138. meet together

  2139. once again, to

  2140. gather as part

  2141. of your people

  2142. yet another one

  2143. of your means

  2144. of grace.

  2145. And we ask

  2146. this in the

  2147. name of Jesus

  2148. and all God's

  2149. people said,

  2150. Amen.

  2151. Amen.

  2152. Amen.

  2153. Amen.

  2154. Amen.

  2155. Amen.

  2156. Amen.

  2157. Amen.

  2158. Amen.

  2159. Amen.

  2160. Amen.

  2161. Amen.

  2162. Amen.

  2163. Amen.

  2164. Amen.

  2165. Amen.

  2166. Amen.

  2167. Amen.

  2168. Amen.

  2169. Amen.

  2170. Amen.

  2171. Amen.

  2172. Amen.

  2173. Amen.
