  1. I'm wearing, it'll become obvious in a bit why I'm wearing, I put on two extra layers of clothing before I started to preach.

  2. So, you know, when I teach people how to speak, one of the things I tell them is that they have to have a nice snappy opening.

  3. And this week on one level it's easy, we're going to talk about sex, amongst other things.

  4. So that gets everybody's attention almost instantly.

  5. And as we all know, the biblical teaching on sexuality is unbelievably popular in Canada and is completely and utterly uncontroversial.

  6. So it's a very easy topic for me to address.

  7. And it's all part of a vice list, by the way.

  8. Those of you who might be watching online or one of our guests here this Sunday, we preach through books of the Bible.

  9. And one of the really good things, if you are a spiritual seeker, we're just curious about tuning into our churches.

  10. We don't hide the fine print since we go through a book from the beginning to the end.

  11. Everything which is in there, including stuff which is very awkward and difficult, we're going to look at.

  12. In fact, if you're curious, in a couple of weeks' time we're going to talk about the biblical advice to husbands and wives.

  13. Once again, another easily understood and highly popular topic in Canada.

  14. And we're also going to talk about slavery because this Bible text deals with slavery.

  15. So no controversial topics.

  16. Just all vanilla and Teflon Sunday in and Sunday out.

  17. No, I'm joking.

  18. And it's a very serious issue.

  19. And I really don't mean to joke because, of course, for some of the things that we're going to be talking about today,

  20. it's deeply, deeply, deeply personal and strikes at the very heart of some of our identities.

  21. So let's begin by looking at the text again.

  22. And I'm going to read through the text so you see it.

  23. What it is is that we're looking at what the Bible would call a sin list or a vice list is another way to understand it.

  24. And there's 11 sins or vices which are mentioned in the text of Scripture.

  25. And that's what we're going to look at.

  26. And so it's Colossians chapter 3, verses 5 to 11.

    Colossians 3:5–11

  27. And really, the vice list is chapter 3, verses 5 to 9.

    Isaiah 3:5–9

  28. But verses 10 and 11, which we're going to read next week as well,

  29. a couple of weeks ago I think I shared how sometimes in the Bible and in literary devices in general,

  30. you have what's called a Janus text.

  31. It's a text that looks in two directions at the same time.

  32. And that's what verses 10 and 11 are.

  33. It's a bit of a bridge text, or it helps on one hand to look back at what's just been talked about,

  34. and it opens the door looking to the next bit.

  35. So we'll read verses 10 and 11.

  36. And here's how it goes.

  37. Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you.

  38. And just before I go anything further with that,

  39. this text isn't saying that the earth is bad,

  40. and it's not saying that physical stuff is bad.

  41. Far from it.

  42. What it's doing, the verse which was just before this,

  43. is talking about the fact that when we see Jesus,

  44. and we're going to return to this in a couple of moments,

  45. when we see Jesus, we will be changed.

  46. We will become like him,

  47. fit to inhabit the new heaven and the new earth,

  48. where there is no evil, no prejudice, no racism,

  49. no sin, no death.

  50. And so what this is talking about here isn't physical stuff,

  51. because we're going to have bodies in the new heaven and the new earth.

  52. But it's, in a sense, all the stuff you leave behind

  53. when you go into the new heaven and the new earth.

  54. All the stuff that's left behind.

  55. And there's lots of stuff that's going to be left behind.

  56. Thanks be to God.

  57. And that's what it's referring to here.

  58. Okay, so put to death everything that's going to be left behind.

  59. If you think about the fact that from the Christian story,

  60. the Christian gospel is that when you put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  61. you change your story.

  62. You enter into a true and better story.

  63. And that true and better story has a far better end.

  64. The end isn't death.

  65. The end in Jesus is to see Jesus face to face

  66. and to become like him,

  67. to dwell in a new heaven and a new earth.

  68. So that's what the earth,

  69. we'll read verse 5 again.

  70. But put to death,

  71. put to death therefore what is earthly in you.

  72. Sexual immorality.

  73. And just to be clear here,

  74. before we go further,

  75. sexual immorality,

  76. it means,

  77. it's the pornea word group in the original language.

  78. And basically,

  79. the Bible teaches that sexual knowing

  80. and sexual stimulation

  81. is reserved

  82. for a biological male

  83. married to a biological female

  84. in marriage.

  85. And that that's what,

  86. anything apart from that

  87. is what pornea or sexual immorality

  88. is referring to.

  89. Just to be clear.

  90. So put to death therefore what is earthly in you,

  91. sexual immorality,

  92. impurity,

  93. passion,

  94. evil desire,

  95. and covetousness.

  96. Which is idolatry.

  97. On account of these things,

  98. the wrath of God is coming.

  99. And just pause there for a second in verse 6.

  100. This is a really important verse in the vice list

  101. because what it's telling us

  102. is that these aren't just boundary markers

  103. to separate Christians from non-Christians.

  104. So for instance,

  105. baptism is a boundary marker

  106. separating a Christian from a non-Christian.

  107. The fact that I'm wearing a collar

  108. is a bit of a boundary marker.

  109. But it's said that I've been ordained,

  110. set aside for the service of God in the church.

  111. And so what the Bible is saying here

  112. is that this isn't just a,

  113. you know,

  114. in a sense,

  115. the Sabbath keeping on one level

  116. is a boundary marker.

  117. Coming to church is a boundary marker.

  118. So the Bible here is saying that

  119. these things which he's just mentioned,

  120. the five sins which he's just mentioned,

  121. and the six sins which are going to come

  122. aren't boundary markers,

  123. that there's something

  124. which is objectively wrong in God's sight.

  125. I know for those Canadians

  126. who are present and those watching,

  127. I'm making the matter harder

  128. rather than easier,

  129. but it's just,

  130. it's far better to just understand

  131. what the text is actually saying.

  132. And so that's the significance of verse 6.

  133. And then verse 7,

  134. this is also very, very, very important

  135. in hearing the vice list.

  136. Let's look at what it says.

  137. It says,

  138. in these two,

  139. you once walked

  140. when you were living in them.

  141. So the reason this is very significant

  142. is that this is not an us versus them text.

  143. Quite a few years ago now,

  144. or 10 years or something like that,

  145. on my summer holidays,

  146. we went to a large evangelical church.

  147. And by coincidence,

  148. the large evangelical church,

  149. the sermon that Sunday was on

  150. Christian marriage and divorce,

  151. Christian marriage and divorce,

  152. mainly about Christian marriage.

  153. And as the sermon went on,

  154. I became more and more and more astounded,

  155. but not in a good way.

  156. Because, I don't know,

  157. there might have been like

  158. four or five, six hundred people in the room,

  159. and he talked as if not a single person

  160. in the room

  161. was ever divorced.

  162. And as the sermon went on,

  163. I thought,

  164. how on earth could anybody in Canada

  165. talk to a room full of people,

  166. like 500 people,

  167. as if none of them

  168. had been touched by divorce

  169. or living together.

  170. Like, it was just,

  171. it gobsmacked me.

  172. You see,

  173. what it reflected

  174. was his understanding

  175. that,

  176. you know,

  177. on purpose,

  178. I'm putting the Bible down

  179. because that's what they do.

  180. We are the pure.

  181. We are the sinless.

  182. We live by all of God's words.

  183. We know you all do.

  184. But when you go through that door,

  185. there's bad, sinful people.

  186. I'm using,

  187. this text

  188. knocks that completely out from under it.

  189. Paul isn't talking about

  190. the group of the pure

  191. in the midst of an impure world.

  192. he's saying,

  193. people here,

  194. these types of things,

  195. that's us.

  196. It's what we lived out of

  197. and what we're still tempted

  198. to live out of.

  199. That's why I'm talking about

  200. these particular things.

  201. So it's not us versus them.

  202. It's us.

  203. Read that again.

  204. Verse 7.

  205. In these two you once walked

  206. when you were living in them.

  207. But now,

  208. you must put them all away.

  209. Verse 8.

  210. Now here's a new list.

  211. Anger, wrath, malice,

  212. slander,

  213. and obscene talk

  214. from your mouth.

  215. Do not lie to one another,

  216. seeing that you have put off

  217. the old self,

  218. and that could also be translated

  219. as the old man

  220. or the old humanity,

  221. with its practices,

  222. and have put on the new self

  223. or the new man

  224. or the new humanity.

  225. Those are different ways

  226. you could validly translate

  227. this particular text,

  228. which is being renewed.

  229. So the new self,

  230. the new man,

  231. the new humanity,

  232. is being renewed

  233. in knowledge

  234. after the image

  235. of its creator.

  236. Here,

  237. there is not

  238. Greek and Jew,

  239. circumcised and uncircumcised,

  240. barbarian,

  241. Scythian,

  242. slave,

  243. free,

  244. but Christ

  245. is all in all.

  246. And what Paul is doing

  247. here at the end

  248. is he's saying

  249. how the gospel

  250. has relativized

  251. all of these different

  252. distinctions

  253. that human beings think

  254. are very,

  255. very important.

  256. And he's used

  257. the ones which have been

  258. very common back then,

  259. in other words,

  260. part of the Roman Empire,

  261. but not Jewish,

  262. that's Greek,

  263. Jewish,

  264. circumcised and uncircumcised,

  265. it has to do with

  266. religious background,

  267. barbarian,

  268. Scythian,

  269. and Scythians,

  270. actually,

  271. Scythian,

  272. United States and England

  273. aren't in the Bible,

  274. but Russia is.

  275. Scythian

  276. was the area

  277. we now call Russia.

  278. And it was

  279. where they considered

  280. to be the most barbaric

  281. of the barbaric barbarians.

  282. That's where they lived.

  283. In other words,

  284. the full extreme

  285. of barbarism,

  286. slave,

  287. free,

  288. but Christ

  289. is all in all.

  290. So all of the distinctions

  291. that we make

  292. that are very,

  293. very important

  294. to Canadians

  295. are all completely

  296. and utterly

  297. relativized

  298. by the gospel

  299. because

  300. when you receive Jesus,

  301. you become in Christ

  302. and Christ is in you

  303. and it means

  304. you get a new identity.

  305. It doesn't mean

  306. that you stop,

  307. in a sense,

  308. living in Scythia

  309. or, in fact,

  310. technically being a barbarian

  311. or Greek or Jewish,

  312. but it means

  313. it's relativized

  314. because you have

  315. a fundamental

  316. new identity

  317. based on a new destiny.

  318. So that's

  319. the particular list.

  320. Now,

  321. some of you,

  322. it's,

  323. for some people

  324. when you're looking

  325. at the list,

  326. it seems as if

  327. it focuses on sex

  328. an awful lot.

  329. I'm going to,

  330. here's the thing

  331. about this particular list

  332. which is really important

  333. for us to understand.

  334. For the average Canadian,

  335. this first list,

  336. this first sin,

  337. sexual immorality

  338. is very,

  339. very hard.

  340. And it's not just hard

  341. for those who identify

  342. as LGBTQ+,

  343. or those who would

  344. consider themselves

  345. to be very friendly

  346. and inclusive

  347. of LGBTQ+,

  348. LGBTQ+.

  349. But it's also

  350. just very,

  351. very hard

  352. for people

  353. who wouldn't

  354. necessarily say

  355. that they're,

  356. I mean,

  357. they're not hostile

  358. but not necessarily

  359. friendly to that,

  360. just living a

  361. heterosexual life.

  362. It's a very,

  363. very,

  364. very hard text

  365. and very controversial

  366. in Canada today.

  367. One of the things

  368. for us to understand

  369. is that

  370. in a sense

  371. that this list

  372. isn't focused

  373. on sex.

  374. It's really focused

  375. on God

  376. and how he designed

  377. human beings to be.

  378. And it means

  379. that if you were

  380. to go to different cultures,

  381. parts of this text

  382. might be very problematic.

  383. So for instance,

  384. if I went to a Muslim country,

  385. a Muslim majority country,

  386. and I happen to be able

  387. to preach to a bunch

  388. of Muslims,

  389. obviously there is

  390. some significant differences

  391. between the Christian

  392. sexual ethic

  393. and the Muslim sexual ethic.

  394. Depending on the

  395. Muslim majority country,

  396. I might have to say

  397. that the Bible

  398. doesn't allow polygamy.

  399. And I might have to say

  400. something about

  401. how some Muslim countries

  402. use the Muslim practice

  403. of divorce,

  404. Islamic practice

  405. of divorce,

  406. to allow prostitution

  407. to exist

  408. without being considered

  409. prostitution.

  410. I might have to do that,

  411. but fundamentally,

  412. if I just explained

  413. what the biblical teaching is,

  414. like,

  415. they would view it

  416. as fundamentally

  417. not very controversial.

  418. But,

  419. if not in the vice list,

  420. when it comes

  421. to the virtue list,

  422. when it comes

  423. to some other things,

  424. they might find it

  425. very, very,

  426. very, very problematic.

  427. In fact,

  428. it might be that

  429. I'd spend the majority

  430. of my sermon

  431. dealing with some other

  432. type of issue in it.

  433. You know,

  434. maybe it's around

  435. the biblical teaching

  436. of forgiveness

  437. which comes up,

  438. or maybe it's about

  439. the whole biblical teaching

  440. of anger

  441. which is in this text,

  442. which could be

  443. a very problematic thing

  444. for some Islamic cultures

  445. that would really go

  446. against the grain

  447. of how they understand

  448. the world to be.

  449. So,

  450. in one level,

  451. and in fact,

  452. if I was to,

  453. if we were all to go back

  454. in a time machine

  455. and I was to preach

  456. this text

  457. in a Canadian congregation

  458. in 1950,

  459. I would maybe spend

  460. no time at all

  461. on sexual immorality

  462. because it's not even

  463. viewed as a problematic thing.

  464. They would just expect

  465. that it's completely

  466. and utterly true.

  467. And once again,

  468. there'd be other things

  469. where the text

  470. goes against the grain.

  471. But,

  472. but for us,

  473. it is an issue.

  474. And I'm going to return to it,

  475. but I want to look

  476. at least briefly

  477. at each of the particular

  478. sins

  479. which is on the list.

  480. Let's look

  481. and let's look

  482. at the verses five

  483. and following again.

  484. But to put to death,

  485. therefore,

  486. what is earthly

  487. and new sexual immorality,

  488. impurity.

  489. Now,

  490. just before I start

  491. to try to help us

  492. to understand

  493. what these are,

  494. a few years ago,

  495. I had the great privilege

  496. to be able to go to Angola

  497. and with SIM

  498. and I got to speak

  499. in a variety of locations

  500. and one of the places

  501. I got to speak

  502. was at a church

  503. designed

  504. to reach out

  505. to a semi-nomadic

  506. people group

  507. who had just

  508. within the last few years

  509. started to have contact

  510. with Christians.

  511. And I got to preach

  512. a sermon

  513. to these semi-nomadic

  514. tribes people

  515. in Angola

  516. on the edge

  517. of the Kalahari Desert.

  518. And it was

  519. one of the

  520. really interesting

  521. experience

  522. because the colonial language

  523. was Portuguese.

  524. I would say

  525. a few words,

  526. like I tried to

  527. discipline myself

  528. to speak

  529. seven or eight words

  530. and then there were

  531. two translators

  532. beside me

  533. and so I would

  534. da-da-da

  535. and then the Portuguese

  536. speaker would

  537. da-da-da

  538. and then the person

  539. who spoke

  540. the semi-nomadic

  541. tribal language

  542. would go

  543. da-da-da-da

  544. and there was

  545. a couple of times

  546. when I would go

  547. da-da-da-da

  548. Portuguese

  549. da-da-da-da

  550. and then there'd be

  551. this conversation

  552. amongst Portuguese

  553. speakers who also

  554. knew the native language

  555. as to what on earth

  556. they were going to say

  557. and one of the things

  558. which caught them

  559. is that I used

  560. the word

  561. the Holy Spirit

  562. and that tribal language

  563. had,

  564. I might be slightly

  565. wrong on this

  566. but you get

  567. the basic ballpark,

  568. I think they had

  569. 27 different words

  570. for spirit

  571. because in that

  572. tribal group

  573. like there's

  574. the spirit

  575. of the tree,

  576. there's the spirit

  577. of this location,

  578. there's the spirit

  579. of a different plant,

  580. there's,

  581. you know,

  582. there's,

  583. but they had no

  584. general word for it.

  585. Like they literally

  586. they just didn't have

  587. one word

  588. like we did

  589. and I can't remember

  590. how they ended up

  591. solving it.

  592. They also didn't have

  593. a word for ice

  594. or snow actually

  595. which was another

  596. one of the funny things

  597. that caused this

  598. five minute breakup

  599. in the sermon.

  600. Anyway,

  601. the reason I'm sharing this

  602. is that for those of you

  603. who know several languages

  604. you know that there's

  605. sometimes,

  606. there's just not a simple

  607. way to translate

  608. one word into another

  609. language.

  610. So here's what

  611. these different vice lists

  612. to try to get you

  613. a bit of a sense

  614. as to what they're

  615. talking about.

  616. Impurity.

  617. This could mean

  618. anything that makes

  619. you religiously

  620. or ceremonially impure.

  621. It could be,

  622. of course,

  623. referring to sexual

  624. impurity.

  625. But it also could be

  626. referring to

  627. desperate housewives

  628. and the Kardashians

  629. to luxurious living.

  630. It could be describing

  631. how many of us

  632. want to live

  633. like rock stars,

  634. just profligate,

  635. no concern with money,

  636. just way,

  637. way,

  638. way,

  639. way,

  640. way overspending.

  641. And it also can refer

  642. to not having

  643. pure motives,

  644. having duplicitous

  645. motives.

  646. In other words,

  647. what some people do

  648. in terms of how

  649. they advance

  650. in business

  651. or how they advance

  652. in politics

  653. or how they advance

  654. in the public service

  655. is they act like

  656. they,

  657. you know,

  658. there's that old line,

  659. if you can fake sincerity,

  660. you've got it made,

  661. you know?

  662. And so they can fake

  663. sincerity,

  664. they can fake

  665. that they care,

  666. but they really don't.

  667. They're just trying

  668. to manipulate you.

  669. Their motives

  670. are impure.

  671. That's what's covered

  672. under the word

  673. impurity.

  674. And the next word

  675. is passion.

  676. And really,

  677. to understand

  678. the range of meaning

  679. there,

  680. it's depraved passion.

  681. And of course,

  682. within that,

  683. it could refer

  684. to something sexual,

  685. but as you know,

  686. if you think about it

  687. as an aspect

  688. of depravity

  689. and passion for it,

  690. it can also be,

  691. we would describe

  692. anything that wants

  693. to hurt,

  694. a passion to hurt,

  695. a passion to belittle,

  696. that would also be

  697. considered under

  698. this particular sin.

  699. Evil desire

  700. or also evil passion.

  701. In particular,

  702. this once again

  703. could refer,

  704. in the range of meaning

  705. for the word,

  706. it can refer to

  707. sexual practices,

  708. but its fundamental idea

  709. is desiring

  710. what is forbidden.

  711. And here,

  712. all of a sudden,

  713. you realize

  714. it touches on something

  715. very, very profound

  716. for Canadian culture

  717. and for science.

  718. Because in fact,

  719. there's large groups

  720. within Canadian society

  721. that they'd like

  722. to operate on.

  723. They'd like to take

  724. aborted fetuses

  725. and be able to

  726. do experiments on them.

  727. They'd like to try

  728. to develop things

  729. in biological warfare.

  730. They'd like to try

  731. to figure out

  732. if there's ways

  733. to splice animal genes

  734. into human genes

  735. to create new types

  736. of human beings.

  737. In other words,

  738. there's this profound desire

  739. for forbidden knowledge.

  740. And that's what's being

  741. talked about here as well.

  742. The desire to figure out

  743. different ways

  744. to manipulate germs

  745. to create biological warfare,

  746. something that most cultures

  747. would view as,

  748. it's a type of forbidden knowledge,

  749. but there's a hunger

  750. and a thirst

  751. and a passion for it.

  752. That is what is being

  753. described here

  754. as evil desire.

  755. Covetousness or greed,

  756. that sort of obvious,

  757. desiring what other people have,

  758. desiring to have too much,

  759. just being completely consumed

  760. with worldly possessions

  761. and idolatry,

  762. replacing,

  763. making something other

  764. than the triune God

  765. as God,

  766. that's what's covered under it.

  767. Anger,

  768. in verse 8,

  769. that here,

  770. and anger and wrath

  771. sound like they're similar

  772. and there's a big overlap

  773. between the two of them,

  774. but the difference is this.

  775. Anger is a settled part

  776. of the personality,

  777. a settled type of anger

  778. that's just there.

  779. I mean,

  780. this is actually

  781. a very, very, very

  782. important sin right now

  783. if you just think

  784. of how hard it is

  785. to try to have

  786. a civil conversation

  787. about the U.S. election.

  788. In fact,

  789. if you think about it,

  790. just to think of

  791. how big a problem

  792. this is in Canada,

  793. try having

  794. a civil conversation

  795. about lockdowns

  796. and masks

  797. with a large percentage

  798. of the conversation.

  799. And you might think

  800. that these are not angry people.

  801. They've been your neighbors

  802. for years.

  803. You know,

  804. you give them your key

  805. when you go on holiday

  806. so they can come in

  807. and water your plants

  808. or feed your cat

  809. and yet they seem

  810. like they're not,

  811. but all of a sudden

  812. you talk about something

  813. and you discover

  814. there is a settled anger

  815. which is very powerful there.

  816. And it might not be

  817. just a general angry disposition.

  818. It might be an anger

  819. towards a particular person

  820. or a particular set of beliefs

  821. or, you know,

  822. in a sense,

  823. this and the next one

  824. is also where things

  825. like racism and prejudice

  826. start to be revealed.

  827. Where in fact,

  828. they seem normal

  829. until you get into

  830. that right type of topic

  831. and you realize

  832. there's actually

  833. an anger issue

  834. in that person's life.

  835. And as we know,

  836. anger is a gateway sin.

  837. All of these are gateway sins,

  838. by the way,

  839. but it's a very powerful

  840. gateway sin

  841. towards hatred,

  842. towards violence.

  843. And this is specifically condemned

  844. racism.

  845. It's all there.

  846. And wrath is the anger explosions,

  847. the explosions of anger.

  848. Once again,

  849. I was just watching a video

  850. about a two or three year old video

  851. with Jonathan Haidt,

  852. an atheist Jew

  853. who's written a couple

  854. of really important books

  855. trying to analyze the culture,

  856. the righteous mind,

  857. and I can't remember

  858. what the other one is right now,

  859. NYU professor.

  860. And in that time,

  861. he's just very open.

  862. He can't say a whole,

  863. he censors himself

  864. all of the time

  865. because of Twitter mobs

  866. and social media

  867. and Facebook mobs.

  868. That's the explosion of anger,

  869. which is a profound problem

  870. in Canada,

  871. United States right now.

  872. Profound,

  873. profound,

  874. profound problem.

  875. And the Bible calls it out

  876. as a sin.

  877. Malice is,

  878. of course,

  879. basically always having

  880. harmful motives

  881. towards other people.

  882. slander,

  883. slander,

  884. of course,

  885. is telling lies

  886. about the other

  887. or yourself.

  888. Obscene talk

  889. is also to be understood

  890. as abusive talk.

  891. And it could just be everything

  892. from just being very

  893. far too loud,

  894. far too assertive

  895. when you talk.

  896. It can be obscene,

  897. it can just be abusive.

  898. The type of talk

  899. that we might not realize

  900. is really abusive talk

  901. if we're with our buddies

  902. in our silo

  903. or our echo chamber,

  904. but you realize

  905. how abusive it would seem

  906. if all of a sudden

  907. you had to say that

  908. in front of the other.

  909. And you realize

  910. it would come across

  911. as very, very abusive,

  912. just far, far too aggressive

  913. as a type of talking.

  914. And then the last one

  915. on the list is lies.

  916. So, for some,

  917. people in our culture,

  918. when you see that

  919. these are the types of things

  920. that are being talked about,

  921. it actually makes it

  922. even a little bit harder

  923. for some people

  924. to see sexual immorality

  925. on the list.

  926. They say,

  927. George,

  928. what's so wrong

  929. about a man

  930. who loves a man?

  931. Isn't that just natural?

  932. How could that be

  933. on a list like this?

  934. George,

  935. everything you've said

  936. have made it harder.

  937. Not easier.

  938. Like, what's...

  939. Isn't it just natural?

  940. Like, why...

  941. Why would the Bible

  942. put that

  943. with all those other things

  944. that you're just talking about?

  945. And that

  946. is a really good question.

  947. So here's

  948. how we have to understand

  949. both the hard things

  950. in the list

  951. and the others.

  952. The list is part of a book

  953. that we've been looking at

  954. that begins with chapter 1,

  955. verse 1,

  956. and goes through

  957. to the end of chapter 4.

  958. And one of the things

  959. which is very important

  960. at the very...

  961. to understand

  962. why this list

  963. would even be there at all

  964. and how it's connected

  965. to anything else

  966. is how the Bible

  967. describes what it is

  968. that Jesus does for us.

  969. That what the Bible

  970. is talking about

  971. is that God,

  972. the Son of God,

  973. would set aside

  974. His glory and prerogative

  975. and divine splendor

  976. and His appearance

  977. as God

  978. and that He would

  979. empty Himself

  980. and He would come

  981. and walk amongst us

  982. and He does this

  983. so that human beings

  984. can be reconciled to Him

  985. and that out of God's...

  986. the Son...

  987. out of God the Father,

  988. God the Son,

  989. God the Holy Spirit,

  990. out of their profound

  991. and deep love

  992. for human beings

  993. that are being bent

  994. out of shape

  995. and can't fix themselves,

  996. they can't leave themselves

  997. to fix themselves,

  998. that out of their great love

  999. Jesus comes

  1000. and suffers

  1001. the trials and temptations

  1002. that we do

  1003. only without sin

  1004. and His life

  1005. of unbroken fellowship

  1006. with God

  1007. and resisting temptation

  1008. and not being anger-driven,

  1009. not giving in

  1010. to these sins

  1011. even though He's tempted

  1012. by them,

  1013. in a sense,

  1014. His perfect record

  1015. and then His death

  1016. upon the cross

  1017. in our place

  1018. that when we put

  1019. our faith and trust

  1020. in Jesus,

  1021. then what happens is

  1022. like we say,

  1023. Jesus,

1024. I need you to be my Savior,

1025. I need you to be my Lord.

  1026. What the Bible

  1027. has just described

  1028. prior to this

1029. is that it's as if

  1030. when you take

  1031. the hands of Jesus,

  1032. it's as if you're

  1033. almost drowned in Him.

  1034. You are completely

  1035. immersed in Him

  1036. and entering Him.

  1037. You're immersed

  1038. in His life

1039. that you could never live.

  1040. You are immersed

  1041. in His death

  1042. on your behalf

  1043. and because human beings

  1044. are in a sense

  1045. like a little bit

  1046. of a sponge,

  1047. to be immersed

  1048. in Him

  1049. is also to mean

  1050. that He becomes

  1051. immersed in you.

1052. That it isn't so much,

  1053. although it's a very important

  1054. part of conversion,

  1055. it isn't so much

  1056. that Jesus came

  1057. so that you could

  1058. be forgiven,

  1059. but that Jesus came

  1060. so that you could

  1061. have communion

  1062. with the Triune God.

  1063. And the only way

  1064. for that to happen

  1065. was for Him

  1066. to live the life

  1067. He did

  1068. and die the death

  1069. He did

1070. and for you to be

  1071. immersed in Him.

  1072. And part of the

  1073. being immersed

  1074. in Him

  1075. is being forgiven

  1076. and is being given

  1077. new life,

  1078. but you are

  1079. immersed in Him

  1080. and He is immersed

  1081. in you

  1082. all for the purpose,

  1083. all for the purpose

  1084. of being able

  1085. to have,

  1086. begin to have now

  1087. a new communion

  1088. with the Triune God,

  1089. the living God

  1090. that will go on

  1091. into all eternity.

  1092. And that's why

1093. He did what He did

  1094. and that's what

  1095. the Christian life is.

  1096. And so the part,

  1097. this is,

  1098. Andrew,

1099. if you could put up

  1100. the little chart

  1101. of the six-fold aspect

  1102. of how the gospel

  1103. grows you,

1104. this is in a sense

  1105. just one step

  1106. or one aspect

  1107. of this whole process

  1108. by which,

  1109. if this is true,

  1110. if God,

  1111. the Son of God,

  1112. the Creator

  1113. and Sustainer

  1114. and Sovereign

1115. over all of the universe

  1116. actually entered

  1117. into His universe

  1118. out of love,

  1119. out of pure,

  1120. unrequited,

  1121. gift love

  1122. entered into His world

  1123. so that He

  1124. could do

1125. what we could not do

  1126. for ourselves

  1127. which is redeem

  1128. His fallen creatures.

  1129. Like,

  1130. behind this text,

  1131. if you understand this,

  1132. that from before

  1133. anything existed

  1134. there was love,

1135. the love of the Father

  1136. for the Son

  1137. and the Son

  1138. for the Father

  1139. and the Holy Spirit,

  1140. before anything existed

  1141. there was love

  1142. and everything

  1143. that came into existence

  1144. was created

  1145. by love

  1146. and we were made

  1147. to be in communion

  1148. and at home

  1149. living and breathing in

  1150. and inhabiting

  1151. and participating

  1152. and responding

  1153. and adding

  1154. and adding

  1155. to that love

  1156. and that is why

  1157. we were made

  1158. and if you understand

  1159. that this means

  1160. that no matter

  1161. how lonely

  1162. you are today

  1163. or how much

  1164. you might think

  1165. that you have

  1166. that there's no one

  1167. who loves you,

1168. the fact of the matter

  1169. is,

1170. is that for every human being

  1171. there has never been

  1172. a time that you

  1173. have been unloved.

  1174. Even right now

  1175. there has never been

  1176. a time that you

  1177. have been unloved

  1178. and it was purely

  1179. and utterly

  1180. out of love

  1181. that God,

  1182. the Son of God

1183. would come and do this

  1184. and so you receive

  1185. Christ Jesus as Lord

1186. and then there's the question

1187. well how do we live?

  1188. How do we live?

  1189. And the Bible here

  1190. from chapter 2 verse 16

  1191. right through

  1192. till the chapter 3 verse 17

  1193. and beyond that

  1194. just describes

  1195. how we live.

  1196. Twice now

  1197. I've talked a little bit

  1198. about how

  1199. the Bible talks about

  1200. Colossians talks about

  1201. how you're dead

  1202. in your sins

  1203. how you're dead

  1204. apart from Christ

  1205. you're dead

  1206. it's as if you're a cadaver

  1207. you're a corpse

  1208. you're a body

  1209. in a funeral home

1210. and how does the Bible

  1211. understand that

  1212. when it doesn't seem

  1213. like it's true

  1214. and the analogy

1215. I used a couple of weeks ago

1216. is I had vases up front

1217. with cut roses in them

  1218. and that's a way

  1219. to understand

  1220. what we are

  1221. apart from Christ

  1222. that we're a cut rose

  1223. cut rose is dead

1224. isn't it on one level

  1225. and it's decaying

  1226. but it looks beautiful

  1227. and that's what a human being

  1228. is on one level

  1229. every human being

1230. is like a cut rose

1231. and what the Bible does

  1232. is the Bible says

  1233. is that when you

  1234. become united with Christ

1235. when you have union with Christ

1236. and Christ has union with you

  1237. you now have

  1238. in a sense

  1239. his life

  1240. that death

1241. doesn't have the same sting

  1242. that death did before

  1243. because Jesus has already

1244. taken all of the sting

  1245. of death for you

1246. when he died upon the cross

  1247. and that in effect

  1248. you have actually

  1249. the eternal life

1250. the life of the Trinity

  1251. the life of eternity

  1252. already within you

1253. when you put your faith

  1254. and trust in Jesus

  1255. and so that dying

1256. is actually in a sense

1257. an opening of the door

  1258. to that time

  1259. when we're fully alive

  1260. that eternal life

  1261. in a sense

  1262. becomes full

1263. and so the question is

  1264. then

  1265. will I grow me

1266. or will the Lord grow me

1267. and that's the first question up here

  1268. will I grow me

1269. or will the Lord grow me

  1270. and last week

  1271. we looked at this

  1272. this remarkable text

  1273. about that

  1274. just before this

  1275. that when you put

1276. your faith and trust in Jesus

1277. at some point in time

1278. you're going to see Jesus

  1279. face to face

1280. and when you see Jesus

  1281. face to face

1282. you will become like him

1283. you will become like him

  1284. and so the way

1285. I tried to put it last week

  1286. which is all under

1287. will I let the grow

  1288. will I grow me

1289. or will the Lord grow me

  1290. is

  1291. in a sense

  1292. spiritual disciplines

1293. and a lot of the

  1294. and a lot of

1295. and I'm not saying anything

  1296. against worldly practical advice

  1297. it's very very important

  1298. but basically

1299. a lot of spiritual discipline talk

1300. and a lot of talk

1301. about how to get better

1302. is really just a cut rose project

1303. and a cut rose project

  1304. means is

  1305. you learn how to

1306. to maybe have the rose last longer

1307. you learn how to make

  1308. the light or whatever

1309. bring out the red of the rose

  1310. a little bit better

1311. and there's all these different ways

1312. that we make the cut rose better

1313. but as long as we look at

1314. everything from our earthly perspective

1315. the stuff that's left behind

1316. all we're really involved in

1317. is a cut rose project

  1318. but if you understand

  1319. that what happens

1320. when you see Jesus face to face

1321. is that you will be like him

  1322. then you understand

  1323. that God doesn't have

1324. a cut rose project for you

1325. he wants to turn you

  1326. into a giant sequoia

  1327. and there's no way

1328. that all of the disciplines

  1329. of a cut rose

  1330. could ever do something

1331. that could turn a cut rose

  1332. into a giant sequoia

  1333. that's a miracle

1334. that only God can do

  1335. and when the Bible

  1336. calls us to holiness

  1337. when it calls us

1338. to become more like Christ

  1339. when it calls us

  1340. to become more

  1341. to you know

  1342. in a sense

1343. filled with the Holy Spirit

  1344. it's all part of God's project

  1345. to prepare us

  1346. to take those steps

1347. whereby we will one day

1348. be like a giant sequoia

1349. not like a cut rose

  1350. and so that's why

  1351. this fundamental first question

  1352. will I grow me

1353. or will I let the Lord grow me

  1354. is very very important

  1355. because if I realize

  1356. that I can't grow me

  1357. all I'll do

1358. is try to make myself

1359. into a better cut rose

  1360. and I don't even know

  1361. how to begin

  1362. to turn myself

  1363. into a giant sequoia

  1364. like that's a complete

  1365. and utter mystery

1366. I have to put myself

1367. in a posture of obedience

  1368. in those places

1369. where God has told me

  1370. to be obedient

  1371. so that he does

  1372. that work within me

  1373. it's a matter of

  1374. a posture of obedience

  1375. to let God do

1376. what only God can do

  1377. because only God

1378. can turn a cut rose

  1379. into a giant sequoia

1380. and nobody else can do it

  1381. can't ever happen

  1382. and so these are

  1383. some of the postures

1384. it doesn't give all of them

1385. and then the very first one

1386. is set your mind on Christ

  1387. Andrew if you could

  1388. just maybe flip

1389. to the way I expressed

  1390. it last week

1391. in light of his death

  1392. upon the cross

  1393. for you

  1394. set your mind

  1395. on Christ

  1396. in all his risen

  1397. sovereign

  1398. trinitarian glory

  1399. so in a sense

  1400. what we understand

  1401. with these six steps

1402. is that you wake up

  1403. you had your coffee

  1404. you're going to go

  1405. to your day

  1406. and you say

  1407. Lord I know I have a choice

1408. as I go through my day

1409. will I follow a cut rose project

1410. or will I let you do

1411. what you want to do

  1412. that I might become

1413. that you might turn me

  1414. into a giant sequoia

  1415. the beginnings of that

  1416. right now

  1417. and so Lord

1418. I want to go through

  1419. this day

  1420. letting you grow me

  1421. not me

  1422. and then God says

1423. okay so one of the things

1424. I want you to do George

1425. is I want you to

1426. set your mind on Christ

1427. in light of his death

  1428. upon the cross

1429. set your mind on Christ

  1430. in all his risen

  1431. sovereign

  1432. trinitarian glory

  1433. and as we talked

  1434. about last week

  1435. you can go look

  1436. at last week's sermon

  1437. you know there's all

  1438. sorts of things

1439. we set our minds on

  1440. and I say

  1441. Lord help me today

  1442. or Lord help me

  1443. in this meeting

  1444. Lord help me

  1445. in this conversation

  1446. Lord help me

  1447. in this project

1448. help me in this week

  1449. to set my mind

  1450. on Christ

  1451. in all his risen

  1452. sovereign

  1453. trinitarian glory

  1454. help me not

  1455. to set my mind

  1456. on winning

  1457. or on revenge

  1458. or on lust

  1459. or on anger

  1460. or on hatred

1461. but to set my mind

  1462. on Christ

  1463. in all his risen

  1464. sovereign

  1465. trinitarian glory

  1466. and then the next

  1467. thing he says

  1468. is okay George

  1469. next you got to

  1470. put off

  1471. and it's literally

  1472. analogies for clothing

1473. I got to put off

  1474. the anger

  1475. and the rivalry

  1476. that is really

  1477. deep in my heart

  1478. into this instance

  1479. and Lord help me

  1480. to put off

  1481. my love

  1482. for sexual immorality

  1483. or my greed

  1484. or my love

  1485. of slander

  1486. because I'm going

  1487. to talk to somebody

  1488. and we both

  1489. have the same

  1490. echo chamber

  1491. and we're going

  1492. to get talking

  1493. about this group

  1494. or whatever

  1495. and it's easy

  1496. for the slander

  1497. to find

  1498. and Lord

  1499. I'm going

  1500. to go into it

  1501. I have to

  1502. throw that away

  1503. and for those

  1504. of you

  1505. who are very

  1506. visually minded

  1507. that might just

  1508. be a very

  1509. important exercise

  1510. for you

  1511. just to imagine

  1512. Lord I want

  1513. you to grow me

  1514. so I can't

  1515. grow myself

  1516. into a giant

  1517. sequoia

  1518. and Lord

  1519. I got to

  1520. put off

  1521. some of these

  1522. things

  1523. these are the

  1524. first things

  1525. I understand

  1526. I got to

  1527. put off

  1528. and Lord

  1529. help me

  1530. to put them

  1531. off

  1532. in a sense

  1533. Andrew

  1534. if you could

  1535. just jump ahead

  1536. to the point

  1537. and then go

  1538. back to this

  1539. this is what

  1540. the main thing

  1541. about this

  1542. putting off

  1543. given your

  1544. destiny in

  1545. Christ

  1546. put off

  1547. sin

  1548. sin is

  1549. defined by

  1550. the Bible

  1551. not the world

  1552. given your

  1553. destiny in

  1554. Christ

  1555. put off

  1556. sin

  1557. sin

  1558. as defined

  1559. by the Bible

  1560. not the

  1561. world

  1562. see one of

  1563. the primary

  1564. means of

  1565. grace actually

  1566. is reading

  1567. the Bible

  1568. and that's

  1569. going to be

  1570. talked about

  1571. if you sort

  1572. of flip back

  1573. so you know

  1574. who's going

  1575. to grow me

  1576. set my mind

  1577. on Christ

  1578. I put off

1579. but it's not as if

  1580. God just wants me

  1581. to become more

  1582. and more naked

  1583. he wants me

  1584. to be clothed

  1585. next week

  1586. I'll maybe

  1587. bring something

  1588. that I'll put

  1589. on at this

  1590. point in time

  1591. and we'll look

  1592. at that next

  1593. week

  1594. put on tender

  1595. hearted mercy

  1596. put on

  1597. compassion

  1598. put on

  1599. love

  1600. put on

  1601. truth

  1602. there's things

  1603. you got to

  1604. put on

  1605. and then

  1606. next

  1607. let

  1608. we're going

  1609. to have a

  1610. sermon about

  1611. that

  1612. the last

  1613. two ones

  1614. let

  1615. Christ

  1616. rule in

  1617. your heart

  1618. get out of

  1619. the way

  1620. and let him

  1621. rule

  1622. and let him

  1623. speak deeply

  1624. into your

  1625. heart

  1626. and then the

  1627. final one is

  1628. do

  1629. everything you

  1630. do

  1631. whether it's

  1632. cleaning toilets

  1633. whether it's

  1634. negotiating on

  1635. behalf of the

  1636. federal government

  1637. a major

  1638. international

  1639. treaty

  1640. whether it's

  1641. negotiating with

  1642. a three-year-old

  1643. to wear this

  1644. piece of clothing

  1645. not the other

  1646. whether it's

  1647. negotiating a

  1648. business deal

  1649. whether it's

  1650. writing a

  1651. symphony

  1652. whether it's

  1653. taking out the

  1654. garbage

  1655. do everything

  1656. in the name

  1657. of the Lord

  1658. Jesus Christ

  1659. giving thanks

  1660. to God

  1661. and these

  1662. are some

  1663. of the

  1664. means by

  1665. which God

  1666. grows us

  1667. so just

  1668. in

  1669. sort of

  1670. in

  1671. conclusion

  1672. is this

  1673. hard

  1674. yes

  1675. this is

  1676. hard

  1677. and some

  1678. of you

  1679. might say

  1680. George

  1681. I still

  1682. don't quite

  1683. know

  1684. why it

  1685. is

  1686. the

  1687. sexual

  1688. thing

  1689. is on

  1690. that list

  1691. George

  1692. it doesn't

  1693. sound

  1694. very

  1695. Canadian

  1696. and it

  1697. doesn't

  1698. really

  1699. make a

  1700. lot

  1701. just those

  1702. days of

  1703. marrying

  1704. are maybe

  1705. far behind

  1706. and George

  1707. were

  1708. you know

  1709. or you're

  1710. in a

  1711. marriage

  1712. and it's

  1713. sort of

  1714. loveless

  1715. and your

  1716. husband

  1717. doesn't

  1718. get you

  1719. or your

  1720. wife

  1721. doesn't

  1722. get you

  1723. like what

  1724. like what's

  1725. what's wrong

  1726. with you know

  1727. pornography

  1728. and you know

  1729. other things

  1730. like that

  1731. like George

  1732. what's so

  1733. wrong

  1734. like why

  1735. is the

  1736. Bible

  1737. like what's

  1738. so wrong

  1739. about that

  1740. you know

  1741. like it

  1742. it just

  1743. gives you

  1744. some pleasure

  1745. it gives

  1746. you a

  1747. fantasy

  1748. time

  1749. to maybe

  1750. think

  1751. that things

  1752. are going

  1753. to be

  1754. better

  1755. and George

  1756. if you're

  1757. you know

  1758. same-sex

  1759. attracted

  1760. it seems

  1761. as if

  1762. this whole

  1763. teaching

  1764. and you're

  1765. telling us

  1766. to put

  1767. all of

  1768. that off

  1769. it just

  1770. it just

  1771. George

  1772. seems to

  1773. go against

  1774. the grain

  1775. and it

  1776. seems just

  1777. very very

  1778. very hard

  1779. what we

  1780. have to

  1781. say is

  1782. you're

  1783. right

  1784. it is

  1785. very very

  1786. hard

  1787. like it's

  1788. very hard

  1789. and from

  1790. the outside

  1791. it sounds

  1792. completely

  1793. and utterly

  1794. impossible

  1795. and I

  1796. can't tell

  1797. you how

  1798. it's going

  1799. to work

  1800. out

  1801. but understand

  1802. what's going

  1803. on here

  1804. in this

  1805. particular

  1806. claim

  1807. the fact

  1808. of the

  1809. matter

  1810. is

  1811. is that

  1812. your deepest

  1813. longings

  1814. and yearnings

  1815. are for

  1816. in fact

  1817. things like

  1818. intimacy

  1819. and things

  1820. like love

  1821. and at the

  1822. very very

  1823. heart

  1824. and the

  1825. very very

  1826. center

  1827. of this

  1828. text

  1829. is this

  1830. story

  1831. which is

  1832. very different

  1833. than the

  1834. stories in

  1835. the world

  1836. are going

  1837. to give

  1838. you

  1839. I have

  1840. a friend

  1841. who a

  1842. couple

  1843. of years

  1844. ago

  1845. he told

  1846. me

  1847. that when

  1848. he gets

  1849. to this

  1850. point

  1851. in time

  1852. he's

  1853. been to

  1854. the

  1855. Grand

  1856. Canyon

  1857. he loves

  1858. the Grand

  1859. Canyon

  1860. and when

  1861. things have

  1862. gotten to

  1863. a particular

  1864. point in

  1865. time

  1866. he's going

  1867. to find

  1868. somebody

  1869. to take

  1870. him to

  1871. the Grand

  1872. Canyon

  1873. he's going

  1874. to tell

  1875. them to

  1876. go away

  1877. and come

  1878. back in a

  1879. couple of

  1880. hours

  1881. but once

  1882. they've

  1883. gone

  1884. he's going

  1885. to stand

  1886. by the

  1887. edge

  1888. because there's

  1889. no guard

  1890. rails for

  1891. lots of

  1892. he's going

  1893. to admire

  1894. the view

  1895. and then

  1896. after he's

  1897. admired

  1898. the view

  1899. for a few

  1900. minutes

  1901. he's going

  1902. to step

  1903. off the

  1904. edge

  1905. so he dies

  1906. so he

  1907. doesn't have

  1908. to deal

  1909. with aging

  1910. and for a

  1911. lot of people

  1912. in our culture

  1913. we think

  1914. there's ways

  1915. the aging

  1916. process

  1917. but the

  1918. end of

  1919. all of

  1920. this

  1921. all there

  1922. is is

  1923. death

  1924. but I

  1925. want to

  1926. tell people

  1927. that the

  1928. Christian story

  1929. tells us a

  1930. far truer

  1931. the true

  1932. story

  1933. that death

  1934. does not

  1935. have to be

  1936. the end

  1937. it does not

  1938. have to be

  1939. the final

  1940. word about

  1941. you

  1942. that diminishment

  1943. is not the

  1944. final word

  1945. about you

  1946. that the

  1947. true God

  1948. that does

  1949. exist

  1950. that who

  1951. has created

  1952. all things

  1953. is love

  1954. it's the

  1955. Father loving

  1956. the Son

  1957. and the Son

  1958. loving the Holy

  1959. the Son

  1960. loving the

  1961. Father

  1962. and the Holy

  1963. Spirit

  1964. it's love

  1965. it's beauty

  1966. it's goodness

  1967. it's truth

  1968. that is the

  1969. that is what

  1970. created all

  1971. things

  1972. and the evil

  1973. and the death

  1974. that's come

  1975. into the world

  1976. is not because

  1977. of God

  1978. but because

  1979. of what

  1980. we've done

  1981. that's what's

  1982. brought evil

  1983. into the world

  1984. and the final

  1985. end of the story

  1986. doesn't have to be

  1987. any of these

  1988. things

  1989. is that when

  1990. you understand

  1991. what Jesus

  1992. has done

  1993. for you

  1994. it's to

  1995. understand

  1996. that he is

  1997. going to begin

  1998. to not just

  1999. make you

  2000. into a giant

  2001. sequoia

  2002. but that only

  2003. is true

  2004. because

  2005. you can

  2006. enter into

  2007. and grow

  2008. into a deeper

  2009. communion

  2010. with love

  2011. itself

  2012. at your best

  2013. moments

  2014. when you sense

  2015. that the heart

  2016. of all things

  2017. there must be

  2018. something like

  2019. the strong

  2020. beating heart

  2021. of love

  2022. which doesn't

  2023. seem to make

  2024. any sense

  2025. given the way

  2026. the world

  2027. is

  2028. but sometimes

  2029. you have that

  2030. sense that

  2031. that has to be

  2032. the truest

  2033. and deepest

  2034. thing

  2035. and the Bible

  2036. is telling you

  2037. that when you

  2038. have that

  2039. sense

  2040. you are actually

  2041. sensing something

  2042. as true

  2043. and the only

  2044. one who makes

  2045. that clear

  2046. and can meet

  2047. the longings

  2048. and the yearnings

  2049. the deepest

  2050. longings

  2051. and yearnings

  2052. of your heart

  2053. is the one

  2054. who came

  2055. and died

  2056. for you

  2057. on the cross

  2058. and that when

  2059. you put your

  2060. faith and trust

  2061. in him

  2062. no matter

  2063. how faltering

  2064. it is

  2065. no matter

  2066. how hard

  2067. you think

  2068. it might

  2069. end up

  2070. being

  2071. that the

  2072. fact

  2073. the matter

  2074. is

  2075. is that

  2076. when you

  2077. put your

  2078. hands

  2079. in him

  2080. it doesn't

  2081. mean that

  2082. there's not

  2083. going to be

  2084. hard times

  2085. there's going

  2086. to be

  2087. hard times

  2088. but he

  2089. dies

  2090. for you

  2091. to have

  2092. communion

  2093. with the

  2094. true and

  2095. living God

  2096. with the

  2097. source of

  2098. all love

  2099. and the

  2100. end of

  2101. all love

  2102. that's

  2103. what is

  2104. the burning

  2105. heart

  2106. behind all

  2107. of these

  2108. things

  2109. that when

  2110. you see

  2111. the death

  2112. of Jesus

  2113. on the

  2114. cross

  2115. you are

  2116. seeing the

  2117. death

  2118. of death

  2119. upon the

  2120. cross

  2121. and you

  2122. are seeing

  2123. the death

  2124. of alienation

  2125. upon the

  2126. cross

  2127. and when

  2128. you see

  2129. the tomb

  2130. empty

  2131. and him

  2132. having

  2133. risen

  2134. you are

  2135. seeing

  2136. that those

  2137. longings

  2138. that you

  2139. have

  2140. that there

  2141. is a new

  2142. and better

  2143. hope

  2144. a new

  2145. and better

  2146. end

  2147. a true

  2148. and authentic

  2149. you

  2150. all of these

  2151. longings

  2152. and yearnings

  2153. find their

  2154. completion

  2155. and wholeness

  2156. in Christ

  2157. and it's

  2158. from within

  2159. that story

  2160. that it

  2161. starts to

  2162. make sense

  2163. and you

  2164. can begin

  2165. to have

  2166. the courage

  2167. to say

  2168. I'm going

  2169. to put

  2170. off

  2171. those things

  2172. that are not

  2173. part of

  2174. God's

  2175. design

  2176. for me

  2177. I am

  2178. going to

  2179. put off

  2180. the malice

  2181. the slander

  2182. the sexual

  2183. sin

  2184. the greed

  2185. my lust

  2186. for promotions

  2187. all my

  2188. cut rose

  2189. projects

  2190. I will

  2191. put off

  2192. in obedience

  2193. and trust

  2194. to the one

  2195. who loved

  2196. me

  2197. this plan

  2198. and the end

  2199. of the story

  2200. for me

  2201. isn't death

  2202. and diminishment

  2203. and decay

  2204. but well

  2205. done my

  2206. good and

  2207. faithful servant

  2208. I have

  2209. loved you

  2210. from before

  2211. you were

  2212. born

  2213. and have

  2214. longed and

  2215. looked forward

  2216. to this day

  2217. when you were

  2218. before me

  2219. face to face

  2220. in the new

  2221. creation

  2222. I have

  2223. looked forward

  2224. and longed

  2225. for that

  2226. welcome

  2227. welcome

  2228. and we

  2229. will look

  2230. at our

  2231. friends

  2232. and loved

  2233. ones

  2234. and laugh

  2235. and cry

  2236. with amazement

  2237. and joy

  2238. at how

  2239. they are

  2240. both the

  2241. same

  2242. and yet

  2243. completely

  2244. and utterly

  2245. transfigured

  2246. and transformed

  2247. and they

  2248. will look

  2249. at us

  2250. and laugh

  2251. and cry

  2252. with amazement

  2253. at what we

  2254. have become

  2255. in Christ

  2256. all by

  2257. God's grace

  2258. all by

  2259. God's mercy

  2260. nothing of

  2261. our deserving

  2262. and nothing

  2263. of our

  2264. accomplishment

  2265. that is the

  2266. end of the

  2267. story

  2268. invite you

  2269. to stand

  2270. let's just

  2271. bow our heads

  2272. in prayer

  2273. oh yeah

  2274. I forgot

  2275. the general

  2276. thanksgiving

  2277. didn't I

  2278. Andrew

  2279. well you know

  2280. we're just

  2281. going to leave

  2282. the general

  2283. thanksgiving

  2284. we're just

  2285. going to pray

  2286. Father

  2287. we ask

  2288. that

  2289. if there's

  2290. any who

  2291. are present

  2292. here who

  2293. have never

  2294. put their

  2295. trust in

  2296. Christ

  2297. that at

  2298. this point

  2299. in time

  2300. they turn

  2301. to him

  2302. they turn

  2303. to Jesus

  2304. and say

  2305. Jesus be my

  2306. savior and

  2307. my lord

  2308. take me

  2309. and

  2310. let me

  2311. enter into

  2312. your life

  2313. I thank you

  2314. that you

  2315. will say

  2316. yes

  2317. and come

  2318. into my

  2319. life

  2320. with nothing

  2321. held back

  2322. or barred

  2323. and for

  2324. those of

  2325. us who

  2326. have put

  2327. our faith

  2328. and trust

  2329. in Christ

  2330. Father

  2331. there are

  2332. things in

  2333. this text

  2334. for some

  2335. it's nothing

  2336. to do with

  2337. the sex

  2338. stuff

  2339. that's an

  2340. easy thing

  2341. for us

  2342. we're bent

  2343. or broken

  2344. in that area

  2345. of our lives

  2346. but it's

  2347. not a big

  2348. thing

  2349. but Father

  2350. for others

  2351. of us

  2352. anger is a

  2353. very powerful

  2354. thing

  2355. or believing

  2356. lies is a

  2357. very powerful

  2358. thing

  2359. false motives

  2360. to get what

  2361. we want

  2362. is a very

  2363. very powerful

  2364. thing

  2365. lack of

  2366. forgiveness

  2367. is a

  2368. powerful

  2369. thing

  2370. and Father

  2371. you know

  2372. the struggles

  2373. that we

  2374. have

  2375. and so

  2376. we ask

  2377. Father

  2378. that the

  2379. Holy Spirit

  2380. would do

  2381. a marvelous

  2382. and wonderful

  2383. work in

  2384. each of our

  2385. lives

  2386. that as we

  2387. have trusted

  2388. Christ to be

  2389. our Savior

  2390. that we

  2391. will trust

  2392. him to be

  2393. the one

  2394. who will

  2395. grow us

  2396. this day

  2397. that he

  2398. will help

  2399. us to set

  2400. our minds

  2401. on him

  2402. in all his

  2403. risen sovereign

  2404. Trinitarian

  2405. glory

  2406. and that you

  2407. Father will

  2408. help us

  2409. to take off

  2410. those things

  2411. and put them

  2412. away

  2413. and put on

  2414. those things

  2415. of compassion

  2416. and love

  2417. and tenderness

  2418. and mercy

  2419. justice

  2420. and of goodness

  2421. that are all

  2422. part of that

  2423. great

  2424. grand

  2425. giant

  2426. sequoia

  2427. project

  2428. that we

  2429. are launched

  2430. in when we

  2431. put our

  2432. faith and

  2433. trust in

  2434. Jesus

  2435. we ask all

  2436. these things

  2437. in the name

  2438. of Jesus

  2439. and all

  2440. God's people

  2441. said

  2442. Amen

  2443. Amen

  2444. Amen

  2445. Amen
