  1. Reading comes from Matthew chapter 10. Please follow a line on the screen in your bulletin or

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  2. your own Bible. In Matthew 10 verse 16 we read, Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst

    Matthew 10:16

  3. of wolves, so be wise as serpent and innocent as those. Beware of men, for they will deliver you

  4. over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged over, you will be dragged

  5. before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.

  6. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say,

  7. for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour, for it is not you who speak,

  8. but the spirit of your father speaking through you. Brother will deliver brother over to death,

  9. and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death,

  10. and you will be hated by all for my name's sake, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.

  11. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly I say to you,

  12. you will not have gone through all of the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

  13. A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple

  14. to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have caught the master of the house

  15. with Ziba, how much more will they malay those of his household? So have no fear of them,

  16. for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.

  17. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

  18. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear him who can destroy

  19. both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for one penny? And not one of them will fall

  20. to the ground apart from your father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not,

  21. therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men,

  22. I also will acknowledge before my father who is in heaven. But whoever denies me before men,

  23. I also will deny before my father who is in heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the

  24. earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father,

  25. and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's

  26. enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of

  27. me. And whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his

  28. cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it.

  29. And whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Whoever receives you receives me. And whoever

  30. receives me receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he's a prophet will

  31. receive a prophet's reward. And the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person

  32. will receive a righteous person's reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold

  33. water because he's a disciple. Truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.

  34. This is the word of God.

  35. Thank you so much, Ellen, for reading that. Wow, this is a really tough passage that we're going to be

  36. looking at. But before I start, I just want to say just a really massive thank you to you as a

  37. congregation. We gave birth to our second child a few weeks ago, and you guys have just been awesome,

  38. just praying for us, supporting us, bringing food. We are just so grateful for the way that God is at

  39. work in our family, our Watermark family together. So I just want to thank you for your love and support.

  40. We've really sensed that during this time. Let me just pray for us as we look into God's word together.

  41. Father, let's pray. Father, I just want to thank you that you are a God of awesome, gracious, good,

  42. power, kindness, compassion. You're a God who knows us. You're a God who hears us. You're a God who sees us.

  43. And Father, right now it feels like even as a church family, there's just a lot of sickness going around.

  44. There's just a lot of challenges that people are facing. Lord, we keep praying for Wilson and Gloria

  45. and Jacob and the family there. We keep praying, Father, for Ed and Trish and the choice, for Maddie's

  46. in hospital, for Cecilia, whose dad is sick right now, and for many other people who I know are struggling,

  47. whether with health issues or other family issues. Lord, we just pray for them. We pray would you have

  48. your healing hand on them. We pray that you would show your power and your mercy and restore, Lord.

  49. Show us your grace and your kindness to each one of these families, we pray. And we pray, Lord, in this

  50. city where there's just so many things going on, whether it's with COVID, whether it's with politics,

  51. whether people are leaving, people are coming. Lord, just we pray in the midst of all the uncertainties,

  52. we pray that you'd help us as your people to keep your eyes fixed on you. We pray that even as we

  53. look into this tricky, challenging passage, Lord, that we would see the great hope that we have in

  54. you. We would see that you are worth giving everything for because you are the only thing,

  55. the only one who is rock solid in our lives and in this city and in our world. So, Lord, I pray that you'd

  56. speak to us. Give us hearts which are open. We love you. In Jesus' name, amen. Great. So, good morning

  57. again. If you don't know me, my name's Chris. I'm one of the leaders here at Watermark. And we're going

  58. to look into this tricky passage today, which, to be honest, I kind of wish Jesus hadn't said some of

  59. these things. But let me start by taking you back to the year 302. For 40 years, Christians had enjoyed

  60. a time of peace and there'd been a lot of growth in the churches. But then the Roman emperor, Diocletian,

  61. decided that he wanted to return to pagan ways and to persecute the Christians. And if you want to

  62. target and a movement, you hit the leaders. And so, what Diocletian did, he got to the pastors and the

  63. bishops who in every town were the guardian of the scriptures. There was just one Bible in the whole

  64. town for hundreds of people. And so, these pastors, these leaders, and some other members of the

  65. congregation were dragged in front of courts and the officials. And they were threatened to say,

  66. either you renounce Jesus, you burn those Bible, or we'll kill you. And many of the pastors,

  67. they refused and they were martyred. But some decided to take the easy way up. They renounced their faith.

  68. They burnt the scriptures so that hundreds of people were denied access to God's word.

  69. And they went free. Three or so years later, a new Roman emperor came into power. And just a few years

  70. later, Christianity was legalized. In fact, it wasn't just legal. It now actually became beneficial

  71. to be a Christian. You could get great career benefits. You could get networking opportunities.

  72. There was a huge advancement that could happen if you just became a Christian. It was a time of peace.

  73. And throughout the world, throughout church history, throughout the world today, and even in

  74. churches today, you see this whole spectrum of what it means to follow Jesus from persecution

  75. to times of peace. But do you know actually that the thing which has caused the most dishonor to Christ

  76. and has been the most dangerous for Christians, whether in persecution or in peacetime, has been

  77. when we have chosen our own ease and our own comfort above Christ, when we've chosen a kind of consumer

  78. Christianity. And so what happens when we are tempted to do those things, to put comfort above Christ,

  79. is that Jesus becomes a little bit more like your pet hamster. You keep him in a little box, confined,

  80. on your desk during the week so he doesn't disturb you too much, and then you bring him out on Sundays

  81. to feed him with some worship. And that just kind of suits us fine. But Matthew's gospel, which we've

  82. been going through over the last few weeks, Matthew has been painting a different picture of Jesus.

  83. He's been showing us that Jesus is the King, the divine Messiah who has come to bring in his kingdom.

  84. And he's been preaching and teaching this kingdom, but he's also been embodying this kingdom by bringing

  85. healing and restoration and forgiveness and deliverance to outcasts, to sinners, to the sick,

  86. to the marginalized, to every person from every background, race, tribe, and tongue, calling them

  87. to repent and believe and come into his kingdom. He's been calling people to follow him.

  88. And last week, Kevin took us to Matthew chapter 10, which marks a transition in the book of Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  89. from where Jesus has been teaching and doing and healing and doing all these signs of the kingdom

  90. to where now the focus now shifts off. He sends out his disciples to do the very things that he himself

  91. has been doing. And we've seen that disciples of Jesus are people who are with Jesus. They become

  92. like Jesus and they do what he does. And so as he sends them out on his mission to preach, to teach,

  93. to heal, to embody the kingdom of God into our city, just as he calls us to and sends us out into

  94. the neighborhoods and the areas of Hong Kong and Asia around us. So Jesus is going to up the ante a

  95. little bit today. He's going to say that if we're a disciple and a follower of Jesus, who's becoming

  96. like him and doing what he does, then there's going to be scars. There's going to be scars of mission,

  97. but he's going to give us, there's going to be courage for mission and there is a promise for

  98. mission. So that's where we're going today. There's three things, scars, courage, and a promise. So let me

  99. start with the scars of mission. Jesus verse 24, he says this, a disciple is not above his teacher, nor a

  100. servant above his master. It's enough for the disciple to be like his teacher. Okay. I mean, that, that, that's,

  101. that's great, isn't it? In fact, in Watermark, I've just seen so many times where the, the love that

  102. people are showing, the service that people are caring for one another, praying for another, I just

  103. see glimpses of Jesus at work in our community. It just looks something like him and it's beautiful.

  104. But Jesus goes on to say, if they have called the master of the household, Beelzebub, and the, the message

  105. translation says, calls that dung face. That, that's an insult. Okay. He says, if, if they call Jesus that,

  106. then how much more are they going to call those who are of his household, his followers, his family

  107. members? You see, what he's saying is, if you're going to be my followers on my mission, there's going to be

  108. scars. Just like me. Because my life was marked by deep love, but also deep suffering, which is where you

  109. see that love. Because when the kingdom of God breaks through, there is always pushback from the

  110. kingdom of darkness. You know, Jesus says it like this. He says about his own life, he says, unless a

  111. grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

  112. You see, what he's saying, just as grapes need to be crushed for the beautiful wine to come out. So

  113. Jesus was crushed in rejection, in insults, in, in betrayal, all the way to death. In order to bring us

  114. into his kingdom in order for this fruitfulness of many lives to be transformed. And he says,

  115. we as his followers should expect the same, that kingdom fruitfulness in our lives will also bear

  116. the same kind of scars. You know, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it like this. He said,

  117. when God calls a man or a woman, he bids him come and die. That's challenging, isn't it? Because

  118. many of our evangelism techniques, what we say is we say, come to Jesus, get love, peace, joy. And

  119. we forget the small print, which says, actually, there's a place where you've got to die to find

  120. life. And Jesus isn't, isn't covering over the small print. He's telling it like he is. Verse 16,

  121. let's kind of go back to where he says, he says, behold, I'm sending you out as sheep in the midst

  122. of wolves. So be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Now just think about that image for a

  123. moment. That's not particularly comforting, really, is it? I mean, because sheep, have you ever seen a

  124. sheep? In Hong Kong, probably not. But sheep are defenseless. Sheep have no claws. They have no sharp

  125. teeth. They can't run fast. They're a cloud on legs. But wolves are predators. They have sharp teeth.

  126. They have sharp claws. They can run fast. And they like eating sheep. What is Jesus saying here?

  127. What he's saying, he's saying there's a legitimate reason why many of us really find it difficult to

  128. go out on mission, out of our comfort zone, because it is scary and threatening. Why? Because we're not,

  129. Jesus isn't sending us out onto neutral territory. He's sending us into our neighborhoods and workplaces

  130. and families where there is a clash between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light.

  131. They are war zones. And so he says, be wise. Like, don't be naive. Don't be naive about this.

  132. Like, just think about it. You see on it, you're desperate to find somebody to date. And you look on

  133. that dating app and they put Christian on the label. And you think, wow, finally. And then when

  134. you meet the person, you see that they don't really go to church and they're pressurizing

  135. you to sleep with them. And you go, but it says Christian. And Jesus says, be wise. Be innocent.

  136. Be alert to Satan's tactics. There's a war on. And you know, you can feel the heat of the battle.

  137. Sometimes with outsiders. But Jesus focuses down and says, often it's with those who are closest

  138. and most precious to us that the challenge comes. He says this, people will betray, will deliver you

  139. over to the courts and flock you in their synagogues. But when they deliver you over, don't be anxious.

  140. And then he says, brother will deliver brother over to death. And he says a father and his child

  141. and a mother. And you see, this is really challenging. You see, but the word deliver is the same word

  142. that is used for betrayed when Jesus was betrayed by his close disciple Judas.

  143. You see, what he's saying is Jesus himself knew opposition from those closest to us.

  144. And for those who follow us, we may too.

  145. And then in verse 34, he gets even stronger. He says, don't think I've come to bring peace

  146. on the earth. And you go, what? He says, I have not come to bring peace on the earth,

  147. but a sword. And you think, really? But I thought you were the prince of peace.

  148. And it gets even stronger. He says, but I've come to set a man or divide a man against his father

  149. and a daughter against his mother. And a person's enemies will be those of his own household.

  150. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.

  151. For a Jewish listener, this is the equivalent of how the royal family would have received the recent interview

  152. with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

  153. This was shocking because every Jew at the time would agree with Michael J. Fox,

  154. who says, family is not an important thing. It's everything.

  155. And it's for many of us in Chinese culture, too, that's the same idea.

  156. And so what is Jesus saying in this?

  157. He's not saying, deliberately go against your family or just be a rebel.

  158. He's not saying, kind of, be an idiot and get some response, bad response back.

  159. He's not saying that because he's very strong with the religious leaders

  160. of calling them to uphold the commandment to honor your father and mother.

  161. Jesus is big into family.

  162. He's not saying either, I'm all about violence.

  163. This isn't justification for things like the Crusades.

  164. What is he saying?

  165. He's saying that when believers choose to follow Jesus,

  166. family members may reject your profession of faith and your new identity in him

  167. because they're rejecting Jesus himself.

  168. And if they do, his call is to choose me,

  169. even above your most precious family members.

  170. You know, in Western individualistic society, we say,

  171. hey, I want to do what I want to do.

  172. In traditional Eastern societies, it's I do what my parents want me to do.

  173. But for Jesus' disciples, it's we do what Jesus wants us to do.

  174. And often that's going to be compatible with your parents' wishes.

  175. But where it is not, where there are clashes,

  176. Jesus says, choose me.

  177. Will you follow me?

  178. You know, I went to Cambodia a couple of years ago

  179. and I met this church planter, a Cambodian church planter there,

  180. whose father had been killed by the Khmer Rouge.

  181. And he was the eldest son and he was expected to support and look after the family.

  182. And his family wanted him to study at college and to become a tour guide

  183. because that was a lucrative job.

  184. But he became a Christian and he felt God calling him to be a pastor and a church planter.

  185. And his family, his mother and the rest of his family could not believe this.

  186. They threatened him with disowning him.

  187. They said he dishonored the family.

  188. How could he be so selfish?

  189. All these things.

  190. There was an emotional blackmail.

  191. And he was just so torn in this time because he loved his family.

  192. But he really felt God calling him.

  193. And so he actually decided to leave to go to Bible college.

  194. And his family disowned him.

  195. Fast forward a few years' time when he'd actually been planting a number of churches.

  196. And he actually managed to, because of his church planting work,

  197. he actually got connected with working for an NGO,

  198. which actually paid him a really decent salary.

  199. And in that time, his family had seen the way that he had lived his life.

  200. And some of his family members started coming to Christ.

  201. And he was able to both support his family,

  202. but also see them one to Jesus because they'd seen how much Jesus meant.

  203. You see, Jesus loved his family more than even he did.

  204. He just couldn't understand it in the moment.

  205. And so that is what the call that Jesus is saying.

  206. He loves our families, but he wants us to place him first

  207. because placing him first is the best way to really love your family

  208. with eternal consequences.

  209. You know, some of us, we know just how challenging and how hard this really is.

  210. Some of us, our families, our parents, they have a lot of expectations on us,

  211. whether it's to do with marriage, whether it's to do with careers,

  212. whether it's to do with parenting choices or finances or lifestyle decisions.

  213. And there's often a clash of values between their values and Jesus' values.

  214. And it's hard.

  215. Many of us know that.

  216. Particularly when you know your parents have just invested so much in you.

  217. Some of us are being held back maybe from thinking about baptism

  218. because of family pressures.

  219. Some of us, as God is going to be calling some of our families

  220. to really engage in the fostering and adoption program

  221. that we're really trying to push as a church,

  222. some of you are going to get pushback from that from close members of your family.

  223. And Jesus says, don't be surprised.

  224. Don't be surprised.

  225. If you're in peacetime or if you're in persecution,

  226. there will be pushback.

  227. But will you follow me and trust me in this?

  228. And you've got to think,

  229. all this feels like a little heavy, doesn't it?

  230. How can you do that?

  231. That sounds scary.

  232. Which is why Jesus then moves on to his second point,

  233. which is the courage for mission.

  234. Because when you hear all of these different things,

  235. isn't often animal's natural response fear?

  236. And Jesus knows that

  237. because he expects it as normal.

  238. That's why four times in this passage he goes,

  239. don't be anxious.

  240. Don't be afraid.

  241. Have no fear of them.

  242. Don't fear those who kill the body.

  243. Fear not.

  244. Do you get the idea?

  245. He's telling us, don't fear.

  246. Why not?

  247. Why not?

  248. Well, because, he says, fear God, not people.

  249. Why?

  250. Because two things.

  251. One, your life and your future

  252. and everyone's, a whole of history,

  253. is in God's hands.

  254. Look at it.

  255. Verse 28.

  256. Don't fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.

  257. Rather, fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

  258. And then later on in verse 39, he goes,

  259. whoever finds his life will lose it.

  260. And that's the same word in Greek,

  261. just slightly different grammar,

  262. same word as destroy.

  263. And whoever loses, same word,

  264. his life for my sake will find it.

  265. What is he saying?

  266. He's saying human beings right now may make your life uncomfortable,

  267. can pressurize you, can intimidate you, can hurt you,

  268. can even in the most extreme circumstances kill you.

  269. But, they can't touch the inner core of who you are.

  270. Because that's in the hands of the source of life,

  271. in your creator, the God of the universe,

  272. our Father himself.

  273. Life itself and all of your future is held,

  274. not in your parents' hand, not in your boss' hand,

  275. not in anyone else's hands.

  276. It's held in his hands.

  277. And so he says,

  278. fear me,

  279. which means look to please me,

  280. honour me first,

  281. by being willing to proclaim me,

  282. go public with your faith,

  283. from the housetops.

  284. And if you lose your own comfort now,

  285. for the sake of making me known,

  286. you won't miss out,

  287. because I'm the one who holds your life itself.

  288. So look to please me first.

  289. But then, in the same time,

  290. there's also this warning,

  291. which he says,

  292. if you live for your own comfort now,

  293. be like a chameleon.

  294. Like, just wanting to blend in,

  295. just wanting a comfortable life,

  296. so just staying, like,

  297. Jesus light in your life.

  298. Jesus is your hamster kind of religion.

  299. You may avoid all the opposition from people right now.

  300. You may have comfort,

  301. you may not,

  302. but you may have comfort now.

  303. But you'll get opposition from God later on,

  304. on judgment day.

  305. And he says,

  306. God is the eternal judge,

  307. who has your entire life in his hands.

  308. He can both give you the whole of life,

  309. but he can also take it away.

  310. So look to him and please him,

  311. because he's the win-win situation.

  312. You know, there was a tennis player,

  313. Australian tennis player,

  314. Margaret Court,

  315. who's a pastor.

  316. She got mocked for some of her disagreement

  317. with gay marriage a few years ago.

  318. And in a tweet by a fellow tennis player,

  319. Martina Navratilova,

  320. she said to her,

  321. Margaret, hashtag,

  322. wrong side of history.

  323. Jesus is saying,

  324. history is not judged by the current cultural trends

  325. or what seems to be comfortable right now.

  326. The true hashtag,

  327. wrong side of history,

  328. occurs on judgment day

  329. when we stand before the king of the whole universe

  330. and we want to be on the right side.

  331. The side of those who are loved by him.

  332. So he says,

  333. don't fear,

  334. look to please him first.

  335. Your life is in his hands.

  336. Secondly,

  337. he says,

  338. don't fear

  339. because the sovereign God of the whole universe

  340. knows you

  341. and cares for you intimately.

  342. I love this.

  343. This is great.

  344. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?

  345. And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your father.

  346. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

  347. Fear not,

  348. therefore,

  349. you are more value than many sparrows.

  350. You see,

  351. in the first century,

  352. a sparrow was the cheapest thing that you could buy in the market.

  353. And so if one sparrow dropped dead,

  354. nobody cared.

  355. It's like,

  356. you know,

  357. if you walk past those vegetable stalls

  358. and you just see like a straight grape or a mushroom just in the gutter there.

  359. Like everyone walked past it.

  360. They trample on it.

  361. Nobody cares about it.

  362. At all.

  363. It's so insignificant.

  364. And then he goes,

  365. actually,

  366. your hair.

  367. How many of you have actually itemized how many hairs you have?

  368. I just had my hair cut,

  369. but I didn't look at how many I lost.

  370. Because I don't care that much about it.

  371. We care about our hair,

  372. but we don't care about the details of it in that intimate attention.

  373. But Jesus is saying,

  374. if he has itemized every hair on your head,

  375. if he knows even that grape,

  376. even that little mushroom there,

  377. then don't you think,

  378. if he cares and is attentive

  379. and has his hands watching over even that,

  380. that the very things which are far more significant in our lives,

  381. that we really care about,

  382. that our very life itself,

  383. don't you think that he cares way more than you do about it?

  384. Don't you think that you matter?

  385. He says,

  386. you are of more value to him

  387. than many grapes,

  388. many mushrooms,

  389. many hairs,

  390. many sparrows.

  391. This is awesome.

  392. It really is.

  393. He says,

  394. you know,

  395. my daughter,

  396. when she was born,

  397. she was just tiny,

  398. but she's precious.

  399. And how do you treat someone who is precious and valuable?

  400. Oh,

  401. with great care and attention.

  402. That's how Jesus,

  403. that's how God the Father,

  404. thinks of you.

  405. And it doesn't matter how insignificant

  406. or how inadequate

  407. or how ignored,

  408. how rejected,

  409. how hard your life is,

  410. he

  411. says you matter to him.

  412. That

  413. is an awesome truth.

  414. So he says,

  415. don't fear.

  416. But can I be honest?

  417. Like,

  418. just really honest for a moment.

  419. I actually know these two truths.

  420. And yet,

  421. sometimes I still fear.

  422. Right?

  423. Sometimes I still

  424. have fear

  425. in speaking about Jesus

  426. to people,

  427. in really facing the cost

  428. of living for his kingdom.

  429. You know,

  430. Tim Keller

  431. shared this story

  432. about a teenage girl

  433. that he met.

  434. And she came to him

  435. and said,

  436. you know,

  437. I know Jesus loves me.

  438. I know I'm his child.

  439. I know I'm valued

  440. by him immensely.

  441. But

  442. what's the use of that

  443. when none of the boys

  444. in my class

  445. like me?

  446. I love her honesty.

  447. Right?

  448. Because

  449. what she's saying is

  450. she fears

  451. the social rejection,

  452. the relational rejection

  453. of the boys

  454. more than she does

  455. fear God.

  456. she's actually saying

  457. she loves the acceptance

  458. of those boys around her

  459. more than she loves

  460. the acceptance

  461. of Jesus.

  462. And that's real.

  463. Because I think

  464. functionally

  465. that's where many of us live.

  466. Don't we?

  467. But

  468. we know these truths

  469. but they haven't sunk

  470. into our hearts.

  471. And so the call to die,

  472. the call to mission

  473. sounds like a call

  474. to suicide,

  475. sounds like a call

  476. to ruin your life

  477. rather than a call

  478. to finding life

  479. as Jesus says.

  480. But can I just share

  481. very personally?

  482. You know,

  483. when I've realized

  484. that actually

  485. that's what's going on

  486. in my heart

  487. with all of my fears

  488. and I've come before Jesus

  489. and just repented

  490. and asked God

  491. to restore

  492. a fear of him

  493. and a love for him

  494. and a delight in him

  495. to know that value

  496. in my heart.

  497. And then he's given me

  498. opportunities

  499. to step out in obedience

  500. and to share my faith

  501. or to make significant

  502. decisions for his kingdom

  503. which I know

  504. are going to cost

  505. which get pushed back

  506. where there is rejection

  507. where there is discomfort

  508. where I have felt

  509. the shame of others.

  510. Do you know

  511. two things have happened?

  512. One,

  513. I've really felt the pain

  514. and the wrestle

  515. and the struggle.

  516. It's real.

  517. It's uncomfortable.

  518. Dying to my own comfort

  519. and my own approval

  520. really is painful.

  521. And even at the same time

  522. as I've wrestled

  523. I've discovered actually

  524. increasingly

  525. the heart of Jesus

  526. that actually

  527. as we are rejected

  528. we see how incredible

  529. his love for us is

  530. that he was rejected

  531. even by us

  532. in so many ways

  533. and yet

  534. we just sense

  535. more of what he's done

  536. for us.

  537. But secondly

  538. I've also discovered

  539. the liberation

  540. from being freed

  541. from actually

  542. all these things

  543. that have enslaved me

  544. the fear of other

  545. people's opinions

  546. when suddenly

  547. you're able to be bold

  548. and actually

  549. it doesn't matter

  550. what people come back

  551. with you

  552. and you discover

  553. that Jesus

  554. is truly enough

  555. that there is

  556. this joy in Jesus

  557. that he is truly

  558. your life

  559. then

  560. the gospel penny

  561. just drops deeper

  562. into your heart

  563. and you realize

  564. that what he is saying

  565. is true.

  566. you will never

  567. understand

  568. brothers and sisters

  569. just how valued

  570. and how loved

  571. you are

  572. by the king

  573. of the universe

  574. by simply sitting

  575. and listening to sermons

  576. or simply doing

  577. bible studies

  578. though good

  579. though those are

  580. we've got to take

  581. our faith public

  582. and as we do

  583. we will experience

  584. all kinds of

  585. different things

  586. will happen

  587. rejection

  588. for some

  589. death

  590. even for others

  591. but we'll begin

  592. to taste

  593. life

  594. in him

  595. in a richer

  596. deeper way

  597. this is the courage

  598. we have

  599. as God calls us

  600. and sends us out

  601. on his mission

  602. but finally

  603. the promise

  604. of mission

  605. and again

  606. this is just amazing

  607. because Jesus

  608. though he promises

  609. suffering

  610. in his mission

  611. he doesn't

  612. leave it there

  613. he's got this

  614. extraordinary promise

  615. for us

  616. as we go out

  617. into loving

  618. the city

  619. the end of April

  620. as we go out

  621. into all the

  622. different things

  623. that God is calling

  624. us to

  625. in the neighbourhood

  626. in the love

  627. offering

  628. he gives us

  629. this promise

  630. verse 40

  631. whoever receives

  632. you

  633. watermark family

  634. receives me

  635. and whoever

  636. receives me

  637. receives him

  638. who sent me

  639. now think about

  640. this

  641. this is incredible

  642. it just blew me away

  643. when I read this

  644. you see what he's saying

  645. is do you know

  646. how the kingdom

  647. of God

  648. comes

  649. and spreads

  650. in Hong Kong

  651. and in Asia

  652. and around the world

  653. how Jesus the king

  654. the sovereign creator

  655. of all the galaxies

  656. the one who has

  657. all power in his hands

  658. the one who could

  659. who breathes

  660. and speaks

  661. and life happens

  662. that God

  663. has chosen

  664. to reveal

  665. his kingdom

  666. and to draw people

  667. to his kingdom

  668. to restore

  669. and to heal

  670. through

  671. ordinary

  672. broken

  673. individuals

  674. like you

  675. and me

  676. that as we go out

  677. and the people

  678. who do receive us

  679. they receive Jesus

  680. and they receive

  681. the father

  682. and they receive

  683. the kingdom

  684. that's awesome

  685. right

  686. you see

  687. marriages

  688. will be broken

  689. which will

  690. be restored

  691. as we go out

  692. self-centered

  693. individuals

  694. will become

  695. those who have

  696. compassion

  697. and serve

  698. other people

  699. divided families

  700. will find healing

  701. the sick

  702. will be restored

  703. there will be

  704. lives which

  705. will just

  706. crushed

  707. and hopeless

  708. which find

  709. a savior

  710. who restores

  711. and gives them

  712. a life

  713. to live

  714. and hope

  715. for the future

  716. you know

  717. above us

  718. where we live

  719. there's a

  720. there's a couple

  721. there's actually

  722. a couple

  723. of units

  724. but there's

  725. a couple

  726. with a young

  727. child

  728. that have

  729. just moved

  730. in

  731. and I got

  732. chatting to

  733. them the other

  734. day

  735. and they've

  736. actually just

  737. moved in

  738. to

  739. sorry

  740. they left

  741. some very

  742. successful careers

  743. they're still

  744. quite young

  745. to work

  746. and serve

  747. amongst some

  748. teenage girls

  749. who were

  750. school dropouts

  751. whose parents

  752. had abandoned

  753. them

  754. or just in

  755. a whole load

  756. of messy

  757. situations

  758. and they've got

  759. two or three

  760. of these girls

  761. living with

  762. them

  763. and they

  764. said at

  765. times it's

  766. just been

  767. a nightmare

  768. because troubled

  769. kids have

  770. issues right

  771. and when they're

  772. in your home

  773. that makes it

  774. even more

  775. real

  776. but they

  777. said each

  778. one of these

  779. girls has

  780. actually come

  781. to faith

  782. and they

  783. have experienced

  784. they're now

  785. getting back

  786. into the

  787. schooling

  788. system

  789. their lives

  790. are being

  791. turned around

  792. and these

  793. couple are

  794. not being

  795. hauled in

  796. front of the

  797. courts

  798. in fact the

  799. social security

  800. system are

  801. referring cases

  802. to them

  803. but they

  804. are looking

  805. like Jesus

  806. and they are

  807. learning to

  808. die to their

  809. own comfort

  810. and follow

  811. where Jesus

  812. takes them

  813. you see God

  814. is calling us

  815. out on his

  816. mission

  817. to follow him

  818. for every one

  819. of us it's

  820. going to look

  821. different

  822. it's going to

  823. look different

  824. but are we

  825. willing to

  826. say yes

  827. as Jesus

  828. sends us

  829. out

  830. because as

  831. we move out

  832. into our

  833. city even

  834. over these

  835. next few

  836. weeks

  837. this promise

  838. Jesus says

  839. if you

  840. acknowledge me

  841. if you go

  842. public about

  843. me

  844. do you know

  845. what I

  846. will go

  847. public about

  848. you before

  849. my father in

  850. heaven I love

  851. to imagine it

  852. like this and

  853. I'm going to

  854. close here

  855. but when we

  856. die we come

  857. before our

  858. father who in

  859. his dazzling

  860. glory we can

  861. hardly breathe

  862. but if we

  863. get a chance

  864. to

  865. what we

  866. would want

  867. to start

  868. saying when

  869. he says to

  870. us hey how

  871. did you follow

  872. me in life

  873. and we'll go

  874. hey I just

  875. think I didn't

  876. do a great

  877. job I was

  878. sometimes I was

  879. cowardly

  880. sometimes I just

  881. felt like things

  882. didn't work the

  883. way I wanted

  884. them to

  885. sometimes it's

  886. frustrating

  887. sometimes I

  888. fumbled over

  889. my words I

  890. tried to share

  891. with people

  892. didn't always

  893. work I tried

  894. to live for

  895. you but you

  896. know and just

  897. as we're kind

  898. of going through

  899. this Jesus will

  900. cut us off and

  901. he'll say turn

  902. around and behind

  903. us there will be

  904. this queue of

  905. hundreds and

  906. hundreds of

  907. people snaking

  908. around longer

  909. than a queue for

  910. an iPhone new

  911. iPhone launch and

  912. some of the people

  913. you'll recognize and

  914. some of the people

  915. you won't and

  916. each one of them

  917. will have a

  918. testimony to share

  919. of how God had

  920. used you to

  921. bring him into

  922. the kingdom and

  923. Jesus will say to

  924. the father look

  925. father this is

  926. what you did

  927. through your

  928. faithful servant

  929. Yidi Echo Greg

  930. Gary Margo Kathy

  931. Brian Henry Joe

  932. Chris carry on the

  933. list of water

  934. markers and the

  935. whole of heaven

  936. will stand on its

  937. feet in applause

  938. a resounding

  939. standing ovation

  940. not for you but

  941. for the father the

  942. son and the Holy

  943. Spirit for the work

  944. that they did in

  945. your lives that the

  946. fruit of Jesus

  947. death was that

  948. people ordinary

  949. broken people like

  950. you and me were

  951. willing to have

  952. scars on us but

  953. bore so much fruit

  954. in our lives and he

  955. will get the glory

  956. let's pray

  957. father I pray that

  958. even as we hear

  959. what is just a

  960. it's just really

  961. challenging Lord

  962. but Lord you

  963. promise that you

  964. are going to be with

  965. us

  966. and so I pray for

  967. us even as we

  968. hear this Lord I

  969. pray that in our

  970. hearts that

  971. actually we'd feel

  972. that sense of fear

  973. of what it really

  974. means to follow you

  975. but then we would

  976. look up and see

  977. what a kind of

  978. saviour you are

  979. what a kind of

  980. awesome but

  981. compassionate and

  982. gracious God you

  983. are and Lord that

  984. we would bank our

  985. lives on you and

  986. you would send us

  987. out this week you

  988. would send us out

  989. every single one of

  990. us into loving the

  991. city Lord every

  992. excuse that we put

  993. up Lord I pray that

  994. you would remove

  995. that because we see

  996. that in your hands is

  997. our life our lives are

  998. not in our busyness

  999. our lives are not in

1000. our exams our lives are

1001. not in our studies our

1002. lives are not in our

  1003. workplaces our lives are

  1004. not even in our

  1005. families good gifts

  1006. though all of these

  1007. are our lives are

1008. held in you and so I

  1009. pray that you'd make

1010. us a people of faith

1011. a people have so many

1012. stories to tell of how

  1013. you broke through and

  1014. used us insignificant

1015. though we are for your

  1016. glory and your kingdom

  1017. in Jesus name Amen
