  1. Well, good evening, everyone. Thank you so much for your warm welcome, Willie. And let me bring

  2. the prayers and the greasings of your brothers and sisters in Grace Church Montrose. It's wonderful,

  3. really, really is wonderful to be with you. As we read from 1 Corinthians, would you please

  4. open up back up there if you'd close your Bibles? That's where we're going to be spending all our

  5. time together this evening. And let's pray, let's ask God in prayer one more time for his help

  6. as we open it up and dig into it together. God, our Father, we pray this evening, please

  7. speak clearly to us. Help us to understand how we as your people should live in a way that

  8. honors you and seeks the best for others. Pleased by your Spirit, the Spirit who inspired your

  9. words, illuminate it for us this evening, so that we would not just be hearers of your

  10. words, but doers of it as well. Work through us and in us this evening, we pray in Jesus'

  11. name. Amen. Amen.

  12. Now let me open up a time together, just asking you a question. I wonder if any of you know

  13. how many selfies somebody in their early 20s is predicted to take in a lifetime. I wonder if any

  14. of you have got a guess. How many selfies do you think somebody is predicted to take? We've got quite

  15. a quiet audience in here. For those who are online, there is no one speaking at all. The answer is, how

  16. many? A thousand. A thousand in a lifetime. No, the number is 25,700 selfies somebody in their early 20s is

  17. predicted to take in their lifetime. Or to put it into another metric, people are predicted to take,

  18. spend 53 hours per year taking selfies. 53 hours per year taking selfies. If that's you and you need to

  19. seek help, come and talk to one of the elders afterwards. I'm sure they'd like to pray for

  20. deliverance for you on that. One of my slight bugbears is I gave up social media a while ago,

  21. but every so often I look over my wife's shoulder and look at her pictures, whether that's on

  22. Instagram or Facebook or whatever it is. You know, historically what you would do if you had a camera,

  23. what you would have done is you would have looked in an event and you would have looked through a lens

  24. and taken a picture of something. But what happens now is instead you turn the picture against you,

  25. your phone against you, and now you become front and centre. And where my issue is, is when it comes

  26. to pictures of weddings. So often I see pictures of people going to weddings, but I never see a

  27. picture of the people actually getting married. Normally it's a picture of the selfie of the two

  28. people or the one person who's been, and you never find out who it was that got married or how they

  29. looked or how they dressed. What we're looking at this evening together is a passage in a letter that

  30. Paul wrote to the early church in Corinth. And what he wants them to do, what God wants us to do,

  31. as his people, is to decenter ourselves. Take ourselves out of the centre of the frame

  32. and seek to put God in his glory and others in their good right in the centre of it.

  33. And particularly the goods that Paul speaks about here, what he's doing in this section of 1 Corinthians

  34. that we've come to the end of here, I'll explain a little bit more about that as we go along,

  35. is he wants to make sure of the salvation of all his brothers and sisters and those who he meets in

  36. his community. And where we are here is at the end of a section in 1 Corinthians, 1 Corinthians chapter 8

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  37. through to 11 verse 1. And here is the culmination of his arguments. What Paul is doing is he's trying

  38. to help the church in Corinth think about what does it look like to live as God's people in a world

  39. that rejects and ignores God. What does it look like for those who have been transformed by the grace of God,

  40. whose lives have been turned upside down to live in a world that is the other way around to the way we now see the world?

  41. You see, what Paul says is that those who have believed in Jesus

  42. are now shaped by a wisdom that looks totally opposite to what the world pushes forward.

  43. A wisdom that is rooted in the fact that Jesus, the King of all creation,

  44. came to die on a cross, living in poverty amongst people whom he came to save and was rejected by.

  45. And so what Paul wants us to do is to de-centre ourselves and our chief consideration must be

  46. the salvation of others and the glory of God. And that shapes all that we do.

  47. This whole section is deeply helpful for you on that front. I'd really encourage you to read through it.

  48. But I've got two big points for you this evening. If you're those people who like to take notes,

  49. I've got two points for you. And the first point this evening is this. Eat and don't eat.

  50. Eat and don't eat. Now it's my fault I should have said that we should have read from verse 23.

  51. So let me just read it for completion's sake. Verse 23, Paul says this,

  52. I have the right to do anything, you say, but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything,

  53. but not everything is constructive. You see, this is kind of sums up what Paul is trying to do here.

  54. While the Christians have the ability to do certain things, while they have been freed by the grace of God,

  55. that is not what is to shape the decisions that they make.

  56. Their rights must be set aside when they're seeking the good for others.

  57. Responsibility over rights, we might say.

  58. And so here, what Paul is saying, and he kind of gives us a few case studies here,

  59. is he's saying this, eat and don't eat. Have a look at those two case studies with me.

  60. Verse 25,

  61. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

  62. for the earth is the Lord's and everything in it.

  63. So here, the first case is, imagine this, you're going to the local market and you are walking along

  64. and you're walking in your tweed jackets, one of those lovely kind of middle class markets,

  65. and you're walking along and you walk past and you see this venison in one corner

  66. and you see this lamb in another, you see this chicken in another place and pork in another.

  67. And what Paul is saying is, as you walk down and you're looking at these different meats,

  68. you're not to worry about where they've come from.

  69. You're not meant to pull aside the man or the woman who's manning the stall and say,

  70. where did this come from?

  71. What happened to it before it came here?

  72. Who touched it?

  73. How was it killed?

  74. Who was it sacrificed to?

  75. What Paul is saying here is, don't worry about that, it's all.

  76. Your conscience need not be panged on that front.

  77. Fear not, you can eat this food however you want.

  78. Or here's the other scenario that we get.

  79. Verse 27,

  80. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go,

  81. eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.

  82. What Paul is saying here is, imagining that you're invited around to a meal,

  83. you've sat down at a table, the food is put in front of you.

  84. Once more again, you don't need to stop and say,

  85. hey, where did this come from?

  86. Who touched it on the way?

  87. How was it killed?

  88. Who was it sacrificed to?

  89. No, instead, Paul says,

  90. you can eat it freely without your conscience panging,

  91. without any fear or anxiety.

  92. You can take that with joy and thanksgiving.

  93. The passage just before what we're reading now,

  94. Paul was telling them that they are in no way to eat food

  95. which have been sacrificed to idols.

  96. Yet here he's saying,

  97. you don't need to fear where the food comes from,

  98. even if it has been sacrificed to idols.

  99. What's the difference?

  100. In this scenario, back in this, earlier in the chapter,

  101. this is going into a temple where you are,

  102. people know what's going on,

  103. where the food is being given,

  104. obviously and openly in an act of worship.

  105. And what Paul is saying,

  106. by doing that,

  107. you are uniting yourself to the God

  108. whom that food has been eaten to.

  109. But here Paul is saying,

  110. you don't need to worry about that

  111. because, verse 26,

  112. for the earth is the Lord's

  113. and everything in it.

  114. And so what Paul is wanting

  115. the Christians here to know,

  116. and he wants us to remember is this,

  117. is we don't need to ask where it came from

  118. because as Christians,

  119. we know that everything

  120. comes from the hands of the good God

  121. whom we serve.

  122. He's saying we don't need to worry

  123. or be anxious.

  124. He said all we need to do

  125. when we receive food

  126. is to receive it with thanksgiving.

  127. Because we remember a good God

  128. who gives good gifts,

  129. seeking the good of his people

  130. to sustain us as we live in this world.

  131. The earth is the Lord's

  132. and everything in it.

  133. It's that reminder for us

  134. to whenever whatever God gives us

  135. is to thank you for us.

  136. I know so often

  137. when we gather together for meals,

  138. when we thank God for the food,

  139. it can be quite perfunctory.

  140. We've got a toddler

  141. who we're teaching the prayer for

  142. and at the moment

  143. it seems to be more of a password

  144. for him to get to the food quicker

  145. than having for us.

  146. So he tries to pray before I do.

  147. Thank you God for food.

  148. Amen.

  149. Let's eat.

  150. But it's a reminder here

  151. that wherever the food has come from,

  152. we don't need to be fearful.

  153. We can be joyful

  154. and thankful

  155. for what God has given us.

  156. And so what Paul is saying here

  157. to the church is eat.

  158. Eat without your conscience panging.

  159. Because you know there is one God

  160. who has given good gifts to his people.

  161. Yes, have a look at where he goes then

  162. in verse 28.

  163. But if someone says to you,

  164. this has been offered in sacrifice,

  165. then do not eat it,

  166. both for the sake of the one who told you

  167. and for the sake of conscience.

  168. Here the issue,

  169. what Paul is saying,

  170. is that our own conscience

  171. is freed and liberated.

  172. We trust and we know

  173. who God is

  174. and what he has given us.

  175. But the concern here,

  176. the way that the decision

  177. is made by a Christian

  178. is not primarily about

  179. what we can do

  180. or what benefits us,

  181. but what another thinks

  182. that they can do

  183. and what might benefit them.

  184. This kind of shifts.

  185. This is what we're saying

  186. about the shift

  187. and the worldly mentality,

  188. the worldly wisdom

  189. that shapes the whole

  190. of what Paul is trying to undo here,

  191. is that the worldly mentality,

  192. if it is lawful,

  193. then I can do it,

  194. no matter what.

  195. But the mentality of the kingdom of God says,

  196. wait a second,

  197. what can I do

  198. that serves others?

  199. de-centers ourselves

  200. and thinks,

  201. think to ourselves,

  202. what is the good,

  203. what is the benefit,

  204. what is the advantage

  205. for another?

  206. Who is it that is asking

  207. this question?

  208. Well,

  209. if you have a look down

  210. at verse

  211. 20,

  212. 30,

  213. verse 32,

  214. do not cause anyone

  215. to stumble,

  216. whether Jews,

  217. Greeks,

  218. or the church of God.

  219. This can be a question

  220. from a Jewish person,

  221. a Greek,

  222. these would have been

  223. the two dominant people

  224. that they would have encountered

  225. in Corinth,

  226. or a Christian as well.

  227. Someone whose conscience

  228. might be panged

  229. by what you are doing.

  230. So,

  231. let me put forward to you

  232. a few case studies

  233. that might help us

  234. to translate it to here.

  235. You see,

  236. what Paul is doing

  237. is he's thinking through

  238. one of the most prominent examples

  239. that is going on

  240. in the life of Corinth.

  241. But underneath this

  242. are principles

  243. which are meant to shape

  244. the life of Christians,

  245. not just

  246. 1900 years ago,

  247. but shape the way

  248. that we think

  249. our service

  250. here in Edinburgh

  251. and wherever it is

  252. that you are from.

  253. And so let me

  254. put a few

  255. forward of these.

  256. And I wonder if you want to,

  257. I'll give you some answers,

  258. but these are ones

  259. for you to think through

  260. and consider

  261. what does it look like

  262. for you

  263. as you seek to

  264. live out

  265. what Paul says here.

  266. So imagine

  267. you're at work

  268. and you've made

  269. the long walk

  270. this week,

  271. the temperatures

  272. have gone up

  273. and you've made

  274. that long walk

  275. to the Bacon Bussey shop.

  276. You've just been craving it.

  277. You get all the way

  278. there and back,

  279. it's taken 20 minutes

  280. to get there,

  281. 20 minutes to get back

  282. and your back

  283. is dripping with sweat

  284. but you think

  285. this is the best

  286. Bacon Bussey in town,

  287. this is wonderful.

  288. You sit down

  289. and you're just about

  290. to unwrap it

  291. and then one of your

  292. colleagues comes over,

  293. a devout Muslim.

  294. What do you do

  295. in that scenario?

  296. You're free to eat it.

  297. As a Christian,

  298. you are free

  299. to eat that food.

  300. As a citizen of Scotland,

  301. you are free

  302. to eat that sandwich.

  303. But here,

  304. the concern

  305. for the Christian

  306. is the salvation

  307. of another

  308. and by eating

  309. that food,

  310. are you stopping

  311. that colleague

  312. standing,

  313. sitting with you

  314. and talking with you

  315. over that remaining

  316. 20 minutes of lunch?

  317. These are the kind

  318. of questions

  319. that are being put

  320. for us.

  321. What about something

  322. like doing yoga?

  323. Now,

  324. I know there's probably

  325. lots of different

  326. opinions on this

  327. and some might not

  328. have opinions at all

  329. about what yoga is,

  330. where it's come from.

  331. Many people

  332. who practice yoga

  333. nowadays don't do it

  334. with any kind

  335. of spiritual impact.

  336. It's more about

  337. body and mental health.

  338. But some Christians

  339. really struggle

  340. with this,

  341. seeing it as

  342. an abandonment

  343. of worship of God.

  344. And so while you

  345. think that you

  346. might be free

  347. because the yoga

  348. that you go to

  349. has no kind

  350. of spiritual

  351. undertones,

  352. what happens

  353. if one of your

  354. friends says,

  355. do you know

  356. that that's

  357. worshipping

  358. another God?

  359. What do you do

  360. in that moment?

  361. You are free

  362. to do it.

  363. Maybe you can

  364. keep it silent

  365. and don't tell

  366. anyone else about it.

  367. Or finally,

  368. and here's one

  369. that I won't give

  370. an answer to you,

  371. but I wonder

  372. if it's this.

  373. I think it might

  374. not be as much

  375. as controversial

  376. as it would

  377. have been a year,

  378. 18 months ago.

  379. What happens

  380. if somebody

  381. you know,

  382. when it came

  383. to the COVID

  384. crisis,

  385. thought to

  386. themselves,

  387. I can't go,

  388. I can't be in

  389. the living room

  390. with you if you

  391. don't wear a mask.

  392. Yet you think

  393. to yourself,

  394. I don't want to

  395. do it.

  396. I don't have to

  397. do it.

  398. There's nothing

  399. in the law

  400. that says this.

  401. It makes life

  402. uncomfortable for me.

  403. What do I do

  404. in that moment?

  405. One of your

  406. neighbours comes

  407. around,

  408. wants to talk

  409. to you,

  410. but they demand

  411. that you wear

  412. a mask.

  413. What do you do

  414. in that moment?

  415. And what Paul

  416. is saying here

  417. is he's saying

  418. when you're

  419. making this

  420. decision,

  421. think about

  422. them.

  423. Think about

  424. their goods.

  425. Think about

  426. their benefits.

  427. Think about

  428. their salvation.

  429. because that's

  430. what Paul

  431. says here

  432. as we get

  433. to the final,

  434. our second

  435. point is this

  436. and if you're

  437. those note takers,

  438. here's your

  439. second point.

  440. What Paul

  441. says here

  442. is when

  443. you're making

  444. your decisions,

  445. do all for

  446. God and

  447. all for the

  448. good of

  449. others.

  450. Do all

  451. for God

  452. and all

  453. for the

  454. good of

  455. others.

  456. And what

  457. happens here

  458. is this is

  459. now Paul

  460. kind of zooming

  461. out right at

  462. the end of

  463. his arguments

  464. of this section

  465. of Paul's

  466. first letter

  467. to the

  468. Corinthians.

  469. Paul zooms

  470. right out

  471. here and

  472. he focuses

  473. on the

  474. driving

  475. principles

  476. for us

  477. as Christians

  478. as we

  479. seek to

  480. live in

  481. this world

  482. in a way

  483. that is

  484. honoring to

  485. Jesus

  486. and honoring

  487. to those

  488. whom we

  489. are around.

  490. And so

  491. Paul says

  492. the two

  493. driving

  494. principles

  495. are these.

  496. Glorify

  497. God

  498. and seek

  499. the good

  500. of others.

  501. Glorify

  502. God

  503. and seek

  504. the good

  505. of others.

  506. So this

  507. evening

  508. is

  509. good

  510. regular

  511. members

  512. of the

  513. free

  514. church.

  515. You'll

  516. remember

  517. the answer

  518. to the

  519. first

  520. question

  521. of the

  522. shorter

  523. catechism.

  524. What is

  525. the chief

  526. end of

  527. man?

  528. It's

  529. to glorify

  530. God

  531. and to

  532. enjoy

  533. him

  534. forever.

  535. You see

  536. this has

  537. kind of

  538. shaped

  539. all of

  540. Paul's

  541. arguments.

  542. If you

  543. just

  544. flick

  545. back

  546. with me

  547. a page

  548. or so

  549. you will

  550. see in

  551. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 8:5

  552. chapter 8

  553. verse 5.

  554. For even

  555. if there

  556. are so

  557. called

  558. gods

  559. whether

  560. in

  561. heaven

  562. or

  563. on

  564. earth

  565. as

  566. indeed

  567. there

  568. are

  569. many

  570. gods

  571. and

  572. many

  573. lords

  574. yet

  575. for us

  576. there

  577. is

  578. but

  579. one

  580. God

  581. the

  582. father

  583. through

  584. whom

  585. all

  586. things

  587. came

  588. and

  589. for

  590. whom

  591. we

  592. live

  593. and

  594. there

  595. is

  596. but

  597. one

  598. Lord

  599. Jesus

  600. Christ

  601. through

  602. whom

  603. all

  604. things

  605. came

  606. and

  607. through

  608. whom

  609. we

  610. live.

  611. This

  612. is the

  613. core

  614. confession

  615. this

  616. is the

  617. central

  618. truth

  619. that

  620. shapes

  621. everything

  622. that we

  623. do

  624. as a

  625. church

  626. that

  627. there

  628. is

  629. one

  630. God

  631. this

  632. is

  633. the

  634. central

  635. truth

  636. which

  637. shaped

  638. the

  639. worship

  640. and

  641. the

  642. life

  643. of

  644. Israel

  645. hero

  646. Israel

  647. there

  648. is

  649. one

  650. God

  651. there

  652. is

  653. one

  654. God

  655. alone

  656. and

  657. so

  658. this

  659. is

  660. what

  661. Paul

  662. is

  663. saying

  664. there

  665. is

  666. only

  667. one

  668. true

  669. God

  670. only

  671. one

  672. God

  673. worthy

  674. of

  675. all

  676. our

  677. worship

  678. the

  679. one

  680. God

  681. who

  682. shapes

  683. every

  684. decision

  685. that

  686. we

  687. are

  688. to

  689. make

  690. and

  691. so

  692. part

  693. of

  694. what

  695. that

  696. looks

  697. like

  698. is

  699. it

  700. means

  701. don't

  702. dine

  703. with

  704. other

  705. gods

  706. don't

  707. do

  708. something

  709. that

  710. would

  711. suggest

  712. any

  713. legitimacy

  714. to

  715. another

  716. god

  717. don't

  718. do

  719. anything

  720. which

  721. would

  722. bind

  723. you

  724. to

  725. another

  726. god

  727. because

  728. they are

  729. not

  730. true

  731. they

  732. are

  733. empty

  734. and

  735. there

  736. is

  737. just

  738. one

  739. lord

  740. who

  741. demands

  742. the

  743. full

  744. allegiance

  745. of

  746. his

  747. people

  748. and

  749. so

  750. what

  751. Paul

  752. is

  753. saying

  754. is

  755. that

  756. we

  757. must

  758. consider

  759. in

  760. everything

  761. that

  762. we

  763. do

  764. how

  765. can

  766. God

  767. be

  768. glorified

  769. look

  770. at

  771. their

  772. verse

  773. 31

  774. so

  775. wherever

  776. you

  777. eat

  778. or

  779. drink

  780. or

  781. whatever

  782. you

  783. do

  784. do

  785. it

  786. all

  787. for

  788. the

  789. glory

  790. of

  791. God

  792. this

  793. is

  794. the

  795. very

  796. first

  797. thing

  798. that

  799. we

  800. must

  801. think

  802. about

  803. as

  804. we

  805. wake

  806. up

  807. in

  808. the

  809. morning

  810. the

  811. very

  812. first

  813. thing

  814. as

  815. we

  816. consider

  817. what

  818. our

  819. weeks

  820. going

  821. to

  822. look

  823. like

  824. what

  825. our

  826. very

  827. first

  828. decision

  829. as

  830. we

  831. meet

  832. other

  833. people

  834. as

  835. we

  836. consider

  837. big

  838. life

  839. choices

  840. is

  841. saying

  842. how

  843. can

  844. we

  845. do

  846. whatever

  847. we

  848. do

  849. to

  850. the

  851. glory

  852. of

  853. God

  854. here

  855. for

  856. Paul

  857. he's

  858. saying

  859. for

  860. the

  861. people

  862. in

  863. Corinth

  864. they

  865. must

  866. look

  867. like

  868. a

  869. people

  870. whose

  871. lives

  872. are

  873. shaped

  874. solely

  875. by

  876. their

  877. concern

  878. to

  879. worship

  880. God

  881. in

  882. Christ

  883. their

  884. true

  885. distinctiveness

  886. as a

  887. church

  888. is

  889. seen

  890. in

  891. saying

  892. there

  893. is

  894. one

  895. God

  896. one

  897. God

  898. alone

  899. and

  900. he

  901. alone

  902. is

  903. who

  904. we

  905. worship

  906. and

  907. obey

  908. he

  909. alone

  910. is

  911. the

  912. one

  913. that

  914. is

  915. worthy

  916. of

  917. glory

  918. and

  919. praise

  920. and

  921. honor

  922. and

  923. so

  924. everything

  925. that

  926. we

  927. do

  928. will

  929. be

  930. shaped

  931. by

  932. that

  933. concern

  934. and

  935. seeking

  936. the

  937. good

  938. of

  939. others

  940. and

  941. so

  942. this

  943. is

  944. what

  945. Paul

  946. is

  947. saying

  948. then

  949. that

  950. we

  951. are

  952. called

  953. to

  954. seek

  955. the

  956. good

  957. of

  958. others

  959. and

  960. that's

  961. where

  962. he

  963. finishes

  964. this

  965. section

  966. that

  967. we're

  968. looking

  969. at

  970. here

  971. have a

  972. look

  973. at

  974. verse

  975. 32

  976. do

  977. not

  978. cause

  979. anyone

  980. to

  981. stumble

  982. whether

  983. Jews

  984. Greeks

  985. or the

  986. church

  987. of

  988. God

  989. even

  990. as

  991. I

  992. try

  993. to

  994. please

  995. everyone

  996. in

  997. every

  998. way

  999. for

  1000. I'm

  1001. not

  1002. seeking

  1003. my

  1004. own

  1005. goods

  1006. but

  1007. the

  1008. goods

  1009. of

  1010. many

  1011. so

  1012. they

  1013. may

  1014. be

  1015. saved

  1016. so

  1017. you

  1018. see

  1019. they

  1020. about

  1021. seeking

  1022. good

  1023. good

  1024. of

  1025. others

  1026. and

  1027. he

  1028. defines

  1029. for

  1030. us

  1031. then

  1032. what

  1033. is

  1034. the

  1035. good

  1036. of

  1037. others

  1038. it

  1039. means

  1040. to

  1041. be

  1042. saved

  1043. and

  1044. his

  1045. concern

  1046. is

  1047. if

  1048. he

  1049. wants

  1050. to

  1051. see

  1052. people

  1053. saved

  1054. the

  1055. danger

  1056. is

  1057. causing

  1058. a

  1059. stumbling

  1060. block

  1061. for

  1062. them

  1063. where

  1064. he

  1065. talks

  1066. there

  1067. about

  1068. do

  1069. not

  1070. cause

  1071. anyone

  1072. to

  1073. stumble

  1074. literally

  1075. it

  1076. means

  1077. putting

  1078. a

  1079. stumbling

  1080. block

  1081. before

1082. someone else. So it's like a toddler when they are playing with their toys and they leave a

1083. train in the way so often that can cause a stumbling block for parents. And that's his

1084. concern here. Anything that might protrude, anything that might hinder, anything that might

1085. block and turn people to turn around and walk away, that is what Paul wants to do. Except for

1086. the most important thing, and we'll think about that in a moment, only one thing should cause people

1087. to push away, but not the church seeking their own rights, their own benefits above others.

1088. So whether it's Jews or Greeks or the church of God, our concern must be how is this going to

1089. make sure that those who are maybe already in the church, how can we make sure they do not lose their

1090. salvation or walk away? How does this make sure that those who are considering Jesus don't walk

1091. away because of the foolish things that we do? And so when Paul then says here, he says,

1092. even as I try to please everyone in every way, Paul's not here talking about being people pleasers.

1093. I know for many of us, people pleaser is quite a negative and a kind of a derogatory way of calling

1094. someone. You never call yourself a people pleaser, or maybe you do sometimes. Normally you talk about

1095. it to someone else when they're making a decision that you don't like that they've made. But what

1096. Paul is saying here is when he's talking about pleasing everyone, he's talking about this idea of not

1097. putting stumbling blocks, but making sure that people can see Jesus. That is his grace concern.

1098. Because what Paul is saying here is the only thing that should offend, the only thing that should

1099. cause people to stumble, is the gospel itself. You see, what Paul has been driving at throughout

1100. this letter, where he begins is he talks about the nature of the gospel. How it upends our understanding

1101. of reality. What he says is earlier in this letter is that the gospel seems like foolishness and

1102. weakness to the watching world. Because it does. For a people who were concerned about wisdom and

1103. sophistry, for a people that were concerned about power and influence.

1104. What Paul was saying is that all the church does is preach a crucified savior. All the church does

1105. is put their trust in a man who was overwhelmed by the Roman Empire. You see, the gospel is rooted in this,

1106. is that Jesus, the one who was rich beyond measure, became poor. The one who was greater than all became

1107. weaker than all. So that whoever puts their trust in him can be saved. The very heart of the gospel is of a weak,

1108. vulnerable, vulnerable, rejected savior. This is a message that put many people off. People laughed at the

1109. Christians then and they still many times laugh at Christians now. But Paul says it is that and that

1110. alone that people should reject. Not the people who try to stand in front of it, who put in stumbling blocks in

1111. front of it, in front of that. I'm reading a book at the moment about a woman who went in the mid-noughties

1112. to do some mission work in Afghanistan. She worked in a small rural town and she talked about what life

1113. looked like for her. And she talked about the clothing that she would have to wear every time that she

1114. walked out of the house. And it was really interesting the way that she vindicated what she did. She said,

1115. those are the rules. That's what's demanded of a woman in this area and that's what I will do.

1116. As a Christian, she could have worn what she wanted, knowing she was loved and accepted by her God.

1117. But so that she could reach the women in that area, her concern was not to push any stumbling blocks

1118. which were getting the way. And so often for us, what we must remember is this, is that perception is key.

1119. We're quite a visual people, aren't we? And so often we will see something and make a judgment

1120. almost immediately. I don't know if you know this, people can make their first impression of someone

1121. within, I think it's two seconds. I don't know what my impression that I gave you this evening was like.

1122. Hopefully you have pulled back from whatever it was.

1123. But if you think of what it's like for these people who see us as Christians,

1124. what are the decisions that we make? Are we those who are known with a deep concern for others,

1125. who would lay down our rights so that we can seek the good and benefit of others,

1126. which is ultimately their salvation? And so this is what Paul is saying.

1127. Paul says this as he finishes. Verse 1,

1128. follow my example as I follow the example of Christ. Back in chapter 9, Paul talks about how

1129. as an apostle of Jesus, as one sent by God,

1130. he was due to be paid by the people, those who are Christians. They were to financially support him.

1131. Yet he said he laid aside that responsibility so that they could hear and know and trust the gospel

1132. and live in light of that gospel. And so Paul says, imitate me, follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.

1133. Because again, as we thought about that, Jesus set aside his own goods

1134. to be spat upon, to be rejected, to receive slander and false accusations,

1135. to be beaten, to be nailed to a cross,

1136. laying down all that belong to him, all his rights as the king of the universe,

1137. so that we might be saved.

1138. Jesus died on the cross, bearing the wrath of God in our place.

1139. He who knew no sin became sin so that we might become the righteousness of God.

1140. And what Paul is saying here is, there is the ultimate example for us.

1141. The one in whom we have found life

1142. was the one who laid down his life for us.

1143. And so what Paul is saying is, therefore, we must lay down ourselves

1144. so that we can seek the good of others.

1145. Now this evening, what I've been doing, and I've given you examples,

1146. but what Paul is giving here is principles which shape.

1147. I can't tell you what to do in every situation.

1148. But ultimately, what Paul is saying, and he's given us these driving principles,

1149. but most importantly is he gives us a picture.

1150. He points us to Jesus.

1151. And he says, look at him.

1152. Look at all he's done for you.

1153. And that's what the life that he calls us into as his followers.

1154. As we seek the good and the salvation of others.

1155. And we seek to glorify God in everything that we do.

1156. And we seek the good and the glow.

1157. And he says, the beautiful thing with the friend,

1158. and theidän of the family we make the two are,

  1159. for God's sake.

  1160. Thanks Hangody.

1161. Here there are three how it tells him who was the one who was the one

1162. who I am so is, and he tells him,

1163. and he's given us today.

1164. And that's what he means.

1165. And I think everybody can continue to you.

  1166. And he'sacts a lot of emotion.

1167. We can only do this i remember.

  1168. 다고, and of course,

1169. because one of the other words

  1170. most importantly,

  1171. on this LED network,

1172. did he give us 70 points.
