  1. The scripture reading this morning comes from Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or on your Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 25, we read,

  4. At that time, Jesus declared,

  5. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  6. that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding

  7. and revealed them to little children.

  8. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  9. All things have been handed over to me by my Father,

  10. and no one knows the Son except the Father,

  11. and no one knows the Father except the Son

  12. and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

  13. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

  14. and I will give you rest.

  15. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  16. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  17. and you will find rest for your souls.

  18. For my yoke is easy,

  19. and my burden is light.

  20. This is the word of God.

  21. Amen.

  22. Okay, I think there we go.

  23. Thank you, Angie, for reading that,

  24. and thank you to the musicians for leading us in worship.

  25. It was, man, what a wonderful time.

  26. Welcome to those of you who don't know me.

  27. My name is Kevin.

  28. I'm one of the elder pastors here,

  29. and it's great to be with you this morning.

  30. To those of you in the community center

  31. or at home watching on YouTube,

  32. welcome to you as well.

  33. A very warm welcome to our church family.

  34. We are working our way through Matthew's gospel.

  35. We've been doing that slowly over a fair while.

  36. Two years ago we started it,

  37. and we took a break for two years or so.

  38. In the last eight weeks,

  39. we've been working from chapter 8 to chapter 11.

  40. And today's our last section in Matthew's gospel

  41. for a little while,

  42. then we'll take a break and pick it up again.

  43. And we come to this amazing, amazing passage,

  44. very famous passage in chapter 11.

  45. But in order to understand this,

  46. let's just remind ourselves

  47. what's been happening in chapter 11.

  48. You'll remember earlier on, chapter 9,

  49. there's this kind of famous summary

  50. of what's been going on in Matthew's gospel,

  51. where Matthew says,

  52. Jesus went around in all the cities of Galilee,

  53. proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

  54. and healing every disease and affliction.

  55. And Jesus is doing this amazing work and ministry,

  56. and it elicits a response from various people.

  57. Some people, as Chris explained to us last week,

  58. are confused and full of doubt about who Jesus is.

  59. One of these people is John the Baptist.

  60. You remember, John the Baptist came with this fiery message.

  61. He says to the religious leaders of his day,

  62. you brood of vipers,

  63. you bunch of snakes.

  64. He says,

  65. the axe is at the tree

  66. waiting to cut you guys down.

  67. And John the Baptist expected

  68. that when the Messiah came,

  69. he was going to reform the whole Jewish system.

  70. He was going to wipe out all the corruption

  71. and overhaul the system and start again.

  72. And then when Jesus came,

  73. he wasn't anything like what John the Baptist expected.

  74. And so John is confused,

  75. and he sends this message to Jesus saying,

  76. hey, did I get something wrong?

  77. Did I miss the memo here?

  78. You and me are going to come and sort us all out,

  79. and you just are doing all sorts of good.

  80. And John is confused,

  81. and he's full of doubts.

  82. Other people are confounded by Jesus

  83. because he doesn't dance to their tune.

  84. Do you remember there's that amazing little line

  85. where Jesus says,

  86. the people of this generation

  87. are like children who play in the marketplace,

  88. and they say,

  89. hey, we played a dance song for you,

  90. and you didn't dance.

  91. We played a dirge,

  92. like a mourning song,

  93. and you didn't mourn.

  94. What's up with you, Jesus?

  95. And Jesus says,

  96. I don't dance to your tune.

  97. I don't march to your drumbeat.

  98. And this irritates them and frustrates them.

  99. And so they write them off as a heretic

  100. and as a lunatic.

  101. And what Jesus is saying here

  102. is that if you want to experience his grace,

  103. if you want to encounter

  104. the life-transforming power of Jesus,

  105. you've got to come to him on his terms.

  106. You've got to come to him as he reveals himself.

  107. You can't come to him with your preconceived ideas.

  108. You can't try and put Jesus in a box

  109. and say, well, this is what I need from a Messiah.

  110. You come to Jesus like that,

  111. and you're going to be a bitly disappointed.

  112. But if you come to him and say,

  113. Jesus, I'm willing to learn from you.

  114. Who are you?

  115. If we come to him on his terms,

  116. in that place,

  117. we find the life-transforming power,

  118. life-transforming grace of Jesus.

  119. And so that's what's happening.

  120. And so at the end of that passage,

  121. we get to this very famous passage in chapter 11.

  122. And look at this passage with me.

  123. Jesus says this from verse 28.

  124. We're going to focus on verse 28 to 30.

  125. Jesus says,

  126. Come to me,

  127. all you who labor,

  128. who are weary,

  129. heavy laden.

  130. I will give you rest.

  131. Take my yoke upon you.

  132. Learn from me,

  133. for I am gentle and lowly in heart.

  134. You will find rest for your souls.

  135. For my yoke is easy,

  136. and my burden is light.

  137. Friends,

  138. if there's one thing that every human heart longs for,

  139. no matter what your culture,

  140. your background,

  141. your ethnicity,

  142. your language,

  143. or your social status,

  144. every human being longs for that rest,

  145. that deep soul rest.

  146. All of us long to rest in peace,

  147. not only one day when we die,

  148. but even in this lifetime.

  149. And if you've ever been in a difficult relationship,

  150. or you've ever been in a relationship that's under strain,

  151. you'll know that is the least restful state of being.

  152. That is the most stressful position anyone could be in,

  153. a relationship where there's conflict.

  154. But a right relationship brings rest.

  155. And Jesus claimed there that ultimate rest,

  156. true lasting rest,

  157. peace,

  158. the longing that every human heart has,

  159. comes only through being in relationship with Him.

  160. Jesus, in a sense,

  161. is saying,

  162. I am the true rest maker.

  163. You want real rest?

  164. I'm the one that you must embrace.

  165. Jesus here is actually quoting from a very famous passage

  166. in the Old Testament book of Jeremiah,

    Jeremiah 6 chapter mention

  167. chapter 6.

  168. The nation of Israel is in a relationship with God,

  169. but the relationship is very strained.

  170. And God says to Israel,

  171. He says,

  172. Stand at the crossroads.

  173. Stand at the ancient roads, paths,

  174. and ask for the good way,

  175. and walk in it.

  176. And when you walk in it,

  177. you will find rest for your souls.

  178. Everybody wants modern solutions to our ancient problems, right?

  179. You want to try Google it,

  180. or new piece of technology.

  181. We're all looking for modern solutions

  182. to our ancient problems.

  183. Jesus says that our ancient problems

  184. can only be fixed by ancient solutions.

  185. God says to the nation of Israel,

  186. Go to the crossroads,

  187. and go ask for the ancient paths,

  188. and walk in them,

  189. and you'll find rest for your souls.

  190. And what Jesus is saying here is,

  191. that ancient path,

  192. that for thousands of years,

  193. people from every culture

  194. have found that has led to peace,

  195. is actually the path it leads to me.

  196. Look at all the personal pronouns in this passage.

  197. Look at what Jesus says here.

  198. He says,

  199. Come to me,

  200. and I will give you rest.

  201. Take my yoke upon you.

  202. Learn from me,

  203. for I am gentle in heart.

  204. I am lowly in heart.

  205. My yoke is easy.

  206. My burden is light.

  207. Eight or nine times there,

  208. Jesus is calling attention to himself.

  209. Jesus doesn't say,

  210. Go to God,

  211. and he will give you rest.

  212. That's what you'd expect from a prophet

  213. or a religious guru.

  214. Jesus doesn't say,

  215. Look within yourself,

  216. deal with your issues,

  217. and that will find you rest.

  218. Almost every modern philosophy

  219. will tell you to look within yourself.

  220. Jesus doesn't call us to join a religion,

  221. to sign up to an institution,

  222. or to go on a religious pilgrimage.

  223. Jesus tells us that the kind of soul rest

  224. that every human being is desperately looking for

  225. is not found in a daily practice

  226. or a great beach vacation,

  227. as wonderful as that is.

  228. It's found in coming to the person of Jesus himself.

  229. Jesus is always saying things like this.

  230. Jesus says things like,

  231. I am the bread of life.

  232. If you want to satisfy your soul,

  233. you've got to come to me.

  234. Jesus says,

  235. I am the light of the world.

  236. Unless you come to me,

  237. you'll always grope around in the dark.

  238. Jesus says,

  239. I am the great physician.

  240. Only by coming to me

  241. can you be truly healed

  242. of your cancer of sin

  243. and be made whole.

  244. Jesus says in John 7,

  245. If anyone is thirsty,

  246. let him come to me and drink.

  247. Jesus is forever talking like this.

  248. Now do you know what that means?

  249. It doesn't mean that if you come to Jesus,

  250. all your problems will be solved

  251. and life will just be rosy, right?

  252. Just ask our friends,

  253. Gloria and Wilson in Australia.

  254. Their five-year-old son

  255. going through chemo at the moment.

  256. Following Jesus doesn't mean

  257. that life is just

  258. walking on cloud nine

  259. or a bed of roses.

  260. But

  261. Jesus is saying here

  262. that if you have Christ,

  263. if you're in Christ,

  264. the deepest longing of our hearts

  265. and our souls

  266. are met.

  267. And that apart from Christ,

  268. you can have all the treasures

  269. in the world,

  270. all the money in the world,

  271. but there'll still be

  272. an empty gnawing

  273. in your heart.

  274. Augustine famously said,

  275. you made us for yourself,

  276. oh Lord,

  277. and our hearts

  278. will forever be restless

  279. until they find

  280. their rest in you.

  281. It's amazing.

  282. Our hearts will forever be restless

  283. until they find

  284. their rest in you.

  285. Now, of course,

  286. all this talk about

  287. how Jesus is the one

  288. is kind of what you'd expect

  289. from a Sunday sermon

  290. at church, right?

  291. I hope that's what you'd expect,

  292. not something else.

  293. But

  294. Jesus is not just

  295. talking about Sundays here.

  296. Jesus is not just saying,

  297. listen, on Sunday,

  298. don't go and play golf,

  299. don't go to the beach,

  300. come to church

  301. and you'll find rest

  302. for your souls.

  303. What about Monday to Friday?

  304. What about the rest

  305. of our lives?

  306. What Jesus is saying here

  307. is what we sang earlier,

  308. Lord, I need you.

  309. Every hour,

  310. I need you.

  311. Monday to Friday,

  312. every day of the week

  313. in the places of our lives

  314. that are most exhausting,

  315. most wearisome,

  316. most draining

  317. in our work life,

  318. in our relationships,

  319. in our finances,

  320. maybe at home,

  321. in those relationships

  322. that are tough,

  323. with our children,

  324. in those places,

  325. come and find your rest

  326. in Him

  327. and He will give us

  328. what we so desperately need

  329. and long for

  330. to come and give us

  331. the rest of our hearts.

  332. We spoke about Augustine

  333. a minute ago.

  334. Augustine,

  335. if you don't know him,

  336. he was a philosopher,

  337. theologian,

  338. hundreds of years ago

  339. in the fourth century.

  340. And Augustine was raised

  341. by his mother

  342. to believe and trust in Jesus.

  343. But when he grew up,

  344. he wanted nothing

  345. to do with Jesus.

  346. And so he ran as far as he could

  347. in the opposite direction.

  348. And he was born in,

  349. I think, Algeria, Africa.

  350. He went to Alexander

  351. and Egypt

  352. and then to Rome.

  353. And he ran as far away

  354. from Jesus as he could

  355. because he thought

  356. Jesus is going to restrain

  357. his joy and his pleasure.

  358. And so he was on a mission

  359. to maximize his pleasure.

  360. And he did that primarily

  361. through as many relationships

  362. as he could.

  363. He was famous in his town

  364. for being a real playboy.

  365. And then sometime

  366. in the middle of his adult life,

  367. he hits a crisis,

  368. he picks up a Bible

  369. and he reads Romans 13.

  370. And God's word pierces his heart,

  371. arrests him on the spot

  372. and he gives his life to Christ.

  373. He surrenders to Jesus

  374. and becomes a follower of Jesus.

  375. But listen to what Augustine wrote

  376. in his autobiography.

  377. It's a little bit wordy,

  378. so I apologize,

  379. but see if you can follow on with me.

  380. He says this,

  381. Late have I come to you,

  382. beauty so old and yet so new.

  383. And yet you were within me all along.

  384. I was in the external world

  385. and I sought for you out there.

  386. And in my unlovely state,

  387. I plunged deep into those lovely created things,

  388. things which you made.

  389. But those lovely things

  390. kept me far from you,

  391. even though apart from you

  392. they have no existence at all.

  393. You called and cried out loud.

  394. You shattered my deafness.

  395. You were radiant and resplendent.

  396. Resplendent means exceedingly beautiful.

  397. You were radiant and resplendent.

  398. You put to flight my blindness.

  399. You were fragrant

  400. and I drew in my breath

  401. and now I pant after you.

  402. I tasted you once

  403. and now I hunger and I thirst for you.

  404. You touched me

  405. and now I burn like fire

  406. to attain the peace

  407. which is found in you.

  408. You see what Augustine's saying there?

  409. He's saying,

  410. I ran all over the place looking for you.

  411. I searched in all the lovely things of this world.

  412. I looked for sex,

  413. I looked for romance,

  414. I looked for knowledge,

  415. I studied in Alexander,

  416. the leading institutions of the age.

  417. I looked for you everywhere

  418. but those things kept me

  419. from the peace I actually needed

  420. which is found in you.

  421. And I tasted you once

  422. and now I burn like fire

  423. for the peace that is found within you.

  424. Friends, is that you?

  425. Are you weary and hungry for rest?

  426. Jesus says,

  427. come to me.

  428. I am the rest maker.

  429. I give you peace.

  430. And notice,

  431. who is it that Jesus is inviting here?

  432. Jesus doesn't invite those

  433. who have found their self-worth

  434. or self-satisfied or self-sufficient.

  435. Jesus does not promise rest

  436. to those that have earned it

  437. through hard work and striving.

  438. Jesus promises his life-giving rest

  439. not as a reward to the faithful

  440. but as a gift to those who need it.

  441. All those who are weary and heavy laden,

  442. come to me, says Jesus.

  443. Friends, Jesus invites the exhausted,

  444. the storm-tossed,

  445. the poor in spirit,

  446. the anxious,

  447. the abused,

  448. those who carry baggage,

  449. those who carry guilt,

  450. those who carry scars in life.

  451. Anyone who is wearied by life's burdens,

  452. Jesus says,

  453. come to me

  454. and I will give you rest.

  455. Now,

  456. what does it actually mean

  457. to come to Jesus?

  458. Jesus says,

  459. come to me,

  460. but what does that actually mean?

  461. Well,

  462. look at our passage here.

  463. In this passage,

  464. Jesus gives us two instructions.

  465. The first one is he says,

  466. come to me,

  467. verse 28.

  468. But the second one,

  469. verse 29,

  470. Jesus says,

  471. take my yoke upon you.

  472. And that's actually what it means

  473. to come to Jesus.

  474. Now,

  475. you may be familiar

  476. with the language of yoke,

  477. but if you're not,

  478. a yoke is the wooden bar

  479. that farmers would put

  480. across the soldiers

  481. of their oxen

  482. or their horses

  483. or something

  484. to join two oxen together

  485. so that they could pull

  486. a cart

  487. or plow a field

  488. that they could work

  489. in tandem together

  490. and be effective.

  491. And so,

  492. they would get these two oxen,

  493. put this wooden yoke,

  494. this bar across their shoulders

  495. with a collar around

  496. so that they wouldn't

  497. drift off separately.

  498. And together,

  499. these oxen could do

  500. what the farmer

  501. was needing them to do.

  502. Now,

  503. what would happen

  504. in the ancient world,

  505. apparently,

  506. maybe still in some countries

  507. in the world,

  508. is that if you had

  509. a new oxen

  510. and an older oxen,

  511. you would put the new oxen,

  512. yoke them together

  513. with the older,

  514. bigger,

  515. stronger oxen

  516. to teach them

  517. and to train them.

  518. And so,

  519. a new cow

  520. would be yoked together

  521. with an older,

  522. stronger,

  523. bigger one

  524. so that he could be broken

  525. and learn the way

  526. of the farming.

  527. But the other thing

  528. that I learned recently,

  529. Chris actually taught me this,

  530. I didn't know this,

  531. I didn't know Chris

  532. was a farmer,

  533. but apparently,

  534. that if you've got,

  535. that sometimes farmers

  536. would have a bigger collar

  537. and a smaller collar.

  538. And you'd think

  539. that the bigger collar

  540. would go on the bigger oxen,

  541. the stronger one,

  542. the older one,

  543. and the smaller collar

  544. would go on the younger,

  545. smaller oxen.

  546. But actually,

  547. farmers would often put

  548. the smaller collar

  549. on the bigger,

  550. older oxen

  551. because that ox

  552. could then carry

  553. the weight,

  554. the burden,

  555. and the young ox or cow

  556. that is still being broken in

  557. could still find its way

  558. and didn't have to carry

  559. the full weight

  560. of the burden

  561. on its shoulders.

  562. Friends,

  563. you see what Jesus

  564. is saying here?

  565. Jesus says,

  566. you anxious,

  567. you weary,

  568. come and take

  569. my yoke upon you.

  570. Jesus is saying,

  571. ironically,

  572. that the only way

  573. to be truly free,

  574. the only way

  575. to really find

  576. the rest that we long for,

  577. that we so desperately want,

  578. the kind of rest

  579. that lasts longer

  580. than a week

  581. or a month

  582. or longer than

  583. a good holiday,

  584. is not found

  585. in extended beach holidays,

  586. is not found

  587. in more leisure activities,

  588. it's actually found

  589. in being yoked to him

  590. and what that means is

  591. by surrendering

  592. our autonomy,

  593. actually coming

  594. and submitting

  595. ourselves to him,

  596. coming under his authority

  597. and allowing ourselves

  598. to be mastered by him.

  599. And that's completely

  600. counterintuitive

  601. and countercultural.

  602. Jesus says that

  603. only as we come to him

  604. and allow ourselves

  605. to be mastered by him,

  606. submit to him,

  607. do we actually find

  608. the freedom

  609. that we want.

  610. Now Jesus was not

  611. the first one

  612. to come up with this analogy.

  613. In the first century,

  614. all rabbis spoke about

  615. the yoke of their teaching.

  616. And what they meant by that

  617. was come under my doctrine,

  618. my teaching,

  619. and you'll take my yoke.

  620. But Jesus points out

  621. what everybody knew

  622. but was too scared to say.

  623. In Matthew 23,

  624. Jesus says this,

  625. he's speaking about

  626. the religious leaders

  627. and he says,

  628. these religious leaders,

  629. they preach

  630. but they cannot practice

  631. what they preach.

  632. They tie up heavy burdens,

  633. hard to bear,

  634. and they lay them

  635. on people's shoulders

  636. but they themselves

  637. cannot even bear

  638. those burdens

  639. that they put on others.

  640. He says,

  641. they do all their deeds

  642. merely to be seen

  643. by others.

  644. And what Jesus is saying

  645. is that every religious system

  646. in the world,

  647. every moral philosophy

  648. in the world

  649. that is divorced

  650. from a relationship

  651. with Christ himself

  652. is ultimately

  653. going to become a burden

  654. because it necessarily

  655. becomes reduced

  656. to rituals,

  657. to performance,

  658. to practices,

  659. to duty.

  660. Jesus says,

  661. only as you marry me,

  662. as you come into

  663. a relationship with me,

  664. do the things

  665. I call you to

  666. not become a heavy burden

  667. but actually become

  668. life-giving.

  669. Friends,

  670. is your Christianity

  671. exhausting?

  672. Does it wear you out?

  673. Does being a Christian

  674. feel like a burden

  675. on your shoulders?

  676. It means that,

  677. if that's the case,

  678. it means you've divorced it

  679. from the person of Jesus.

  680. Your faith in Christ

  681. has merely become

  682. a religion

  683. and that is forever

  684. going to be exhausting.

  685. Jesus says,

  686. come to me.

  687. But do you know what?

  688. The secular worldview

  689. of our day

  690. which promises rest

  691. and hope and peace

  692. is just as exhausting.

  693. It's the ultimate

  694. bait and switch.

  695. Do you know that phrase,

  696. bait and switch?

  697. It's like,

  698. when somebody baits you

  699. with something,

  700. they offer you something,

  701. this golden carrot

  702. and then as you take it,

  703. they switch it

  704. with something else,

  705. right?

  706. They say,

  707. buy this house

  708. and,

  709. or they advertise

  710. like this beach holiday

  711. and all food and beverages

  712. are included

  713. and you go on the beach holiday

  714. and you find

  715. it's like half a star restaurant,

  716. the food is off,

  717. it's the ultimate

  718. bait and switch.

  719. They seduce you

  720. with a bait

  721. and then they switch

  722. it with something else.

  723. Friends,

  724. every,

  725. our culture,

  726. the secular cultures

  727. of our age

  728. promise us rest

  729. in a thousand ways

  730. but in the end

  731. they're exhausting,

  732. they're wearisome.

  733. Friends,

  734. how many of us

  735. are weighed down

  736. with exhaustion

  737. trying to prove ourselves,

  738. trying to be someone great,

  739. trying to prove

  740. whether to our parents

  741. or ourselves

  742. that we're not a failure,

  743. that we're somebody,

  744. that we've got the goods,

  745. that we can make the great.

  746. I plunged myself

  747. into those lovely

  748. created things

  749. which you made

  750. but those lovely things

  751. kept me far from you.

  752. Tim Keller said it like this,

  753. in ancient times

  754. the gods were bloodthirsty

  755. and hard to please.

  756. Even today

  757. they still are.

  758. Friends,

  759. isn't that why

  760. in Hong Kong

  761. we all work

  762. such exceedingly long hours,

  763. always taking on

  764. more projects,

  765. always taking on

  766. more assignments,

  767. always taking on

  768. more work?

  769. Friends,

  770. isn't that why

  771. how many of us

  772. live under the constant

  773. yoke of people's expectations,

  774. whether it's our boss

  775. or our parents

  776. or Facebook

  777. or Instagram?

  778. Friends,

  779. how many of us

  780. work harder and harder

  781. at school projects

  782. and assignments

  783. and we're so overwhelmed

  784. we carry this burden

  785. trying to prove ourselves,

  786. whether to our parents

  787. or our peers

  788. or to ourselves,

  789. that we're somebody,

  790. that we've got the goods?

  791. Friends,

  792. isn't that why

  793. we find it so hard

  794. to say no?

  795. In ancient times

  796. the gods were bloodthirsty

  797. and hard to please.

  798. Even today

  799. they still are.

  800. And Jesus says

  801. that if you want

  802. to find life,

  803. if you want to find

  804. the rest that He promises,

  805. the way to do it

  806. is to actually

  807. give up your life.

  808. You've got to abandon

  809. all those other things

  810. that you've yoked yourself to.

  811. You've got to abandon

  812. those other things

  813. that you've surrendered

  814. yourself to.

  815. If you truly want

  816. to be free,

  817. you have to surrender

  818. your autonomy

  819. to His authority.

  820. You've got to join yourself,

  821. so join yourself

  822. that you're actually

  823. at His mercy.

  824. And that's a remarkable

  825. claim.

  826. Now here's the question.

  827. Why should we trust Him?

  828. Why should we trust Him?

  829. What Jesus is calling us

  830. to here is radically

  831. significant.

  832. He says the only way

  833. you're going to find

  834. the rest that you long for

  835. is to actually die

  836. to yourself

  837. and to come to Him,

  838. to surrender yourself

  839. to His yoke,

  840. to His experience.

  841. If you really want

  842. to find the life-transforming

  843. grace that He promises,

  844. Jesus doesn't say

  845. come and drop coins

  846. in the offering

  847. or go on a homely

  848. pilgrimage to Israel

  849. or join a siege.

  850. He says you've got

  851. to abandon yourself

  852. to those things

  853. that you've yoked

  854. yourself to

  855. and you've got

  856. to come to Me.

  857. Why should we trust Him?

  858. Why should we do that?

  859. Well, as we come to close,

  860. I want to give us

  861. three simple reasons.

  862. Three reasons

  863. why you can trust Jesus.

  864. The first is this,

  865. because He knows you

  866. the best.

  867. Look at what He says here

  868. in verse 27.

  869. Jesus says,

  870. All things have been

  871. handed over to Me

  872. by My Father.

  873. Another way of saying

  874. that is all authority

  875. in all the world

  876. belongs to Me.

  877. And Jesus says,

  878. Nobody knows the Father

  879. like Me

  880. and nobody knows Me

  881. like the Father.

  882. What's Jesus saying there?

  883. Jesus is saying

  884. that I have existed

  885. from eternity past

  886. to eternity in the future.

  887. I know you better

  888. than yourself.

  889. I know everything about you.

  890. If there's one person

  891. you can trust,

  892. you can trust Me.

  893. Friends,

  894. have you ever bought

  895. a new gadget

  896. or appliance?

  897. What does it always

  898. come with?

  899. It comes with instructions,

  900. right?

  901. And there's always

  902. a little line that says,

  903. For best results,

  904. follow the maker's instructions.

  905. Is that right?

  906. Okay.

  907. Maybe not your appliances.

  908. And what is the problem

  909. with most guys?

  910. We throw the instructions away

  911. and say,

  912. I know how this thing works.

  913. And our wives

  914. are always looking

  915. off the instructions

  916. and helping us

  917. when we get it wrong,

  918. right?

  919. How many have ever

  920. tried to build

  921. an Ikea cabinet

  922. or cupboard

  923. and you say,

  924. There it is, love.

  925. It looks great.

  926. And she opens the door

  927. and you realize

  928. you put the door

  929. in the wrong way

  930. or something like that,

  931. right?

  932. For best results,

  933. follow the maker's instructions.

  934. Jesus is saying here,

  935. I am the maker.

  936. I'm the one who made you.

  937. I know you the best.

  938. If you really want

  939. to find life,

  940. you've got to come to me.

  941. I don't know

  942. if you've ever been

  943. in a situation

  944. where you've heard kids,

  945. little kids,

  946. having a conversation.

  947. It's very funny,

  948. right?

  949. And sometimes you'll hear

  950. a kid, let's say,

  951. four years old

  952. and one kid will say,

  953. My dad's car

  954. can drive

  955. the speed of light.

  956. And another kid says,

  957. My dad's car

  958. can drive

  959. as fast as lightning.

  960. And this kid will say,

  961. My dad's car

  962. can fly to America.

  963. And the next kid will say,

  964. Well, my dad's car

  965. can fly to the moon,

  966. right?

  967. And they're kind of like

  968. all these exaggerated things.

  969. And some of them

  970. even believe it.

  971. I remember when I was a kid,

  972. I had a friend

  973. in kindergarten

  974. that pointed to a car

  975. and said,

  976. You see that car?

  977. It's called a ninja car.

  978. It can fly.

  979. And I totally believed him.

  980. Friends,

  981. every system of the world

  982. is making radical claims

  983. like that.

  984. You want true rest?

  985. Buy that holiday home.

  986. You want true rest?

  987. Put your kids

  988. in this university.

  989. You want true rest?

  990. Invest in this vehicle.

  991. You want true rest?

  992. The rest that your heart

  993. is longing for?

  994. Buy this gadget.

  995. Friends,

  996. all of it is like

  997. kids in the dark.

  998. They don't know

  999. what they're talking about.

  1000. But Jesus comes along

  1001. and he says,

1002. I know you the best

1003. and I love you the most.

1004. And I was there at creation

1005. and I know what's good for you.

  1006. You can trust me.

  1007. Remember what Augustine said?

1008. Our hearts were made for you

1009. and will always be restless

1010. until they find their rest in you.

  1011. Friends,

1012. how can you trust him?

1013. Jesus is not just one

1014. of a plethora of kids

  1015. in the car

  1016. making these radical,

  1017. ridiculous claims.

  1018. Jesus is the one

1019. who knows you the best

1020. and he knows what your heart

1021. is made to function on.

  1022. Here's another reason

1023. why I can trust him.

  1024. Because of the cross.

  1025. Jesus comes to us

  1026. and he says,

1027. take my yoke upon you

  1028. and you'll find rest

  1029. for your souls.

1030. And sometimes that can feel

  1031. like we're dying inside.

  1032. But friends,

  1033. Jesus doesn't ask us

  1034. to die ultimately.

1035. He asks us to die

  1036. to ourselves

  1037. because he says,

  1038. in that place

  1039. you'll find true life.

  1040. How do we know

  1041. that he's true?

  1042. Because Jesus

1043. really did die for us.

  1044. Jesus didn't just

  1045. put on his shoulders

  1046. a yoke,

  1047. a work instrument.

1048. Jesus put on his shoulders

  1049. an instrument of death.

  1050. The yoke that oxen

  1051. put on his shoulders

1052. is an instrument of work.

  1053. Jesus put on himself

  1054. the instrument of death.

  1055. He put on himself

  1056. the rugged cross.

  1057. And he said,

1058. I'll go to the cross.

  1059. I'll die for you

1060. so that when I say

1061. you come and follow me,

1062. it might feel like death

  1063. but actually

1064. it's the way to life.

  1065. Jesus died,

  1066. friends,

  1067. that we can experience

  1068. true life.

  1069. Martin O'Jones

1070. used to say it like this.

  1071. He said,

  1072. you'll never experience

  1073. peace of God

  1074. until you're at peace

  1075. with God.

  1076. You'll never experience

  1077. the peace,

  1078. the rest that God

  1079. promises you

  1080. until you've come

  1081. to peace with God.

  1082. In other words,

1083. until you die to yourself

  1084. and you experience

  1085. the life that Jesus

  1086. wants for you.

1087. But here's the final thing.

  1088. And this is

  1089. a couple of minutes.

1090. Why should we trust Jesus?

  1091. Jesus

1092. because of who he is.

1093. Look at what he says here

  1094. in verse,

  1095. actually I'll read

  1096. the whole thing.

  1097. Jesus says,

  1098. come to me

  1099. you who are weary

  1100. and heavy laden,

1101. I will give you rest.

1102. Take my yoke upon you

  1103. and learn from me

1104. and then he has to keep it.

  1105. For I am gentle

  1106. and lowly in heart

1107. and you will find rest

  1108. for your souls.

  1109. Many Bible commentators

  1110. have noted

1111. that this is the only verse

  1112. in the Bible

  1113. where Jesus tells us

1114. what his heart is like.

1115. Only verse in the Bible

  1116. where Jesus reveals

  1117. his own heart.

  1118. He says,

1119. this is what my heart is like.

  1120. Dane Autlan says

  1121. that the one place

  1122. in scripture

1123. where the Son of God

  1124. peels back the veil

1125. and lets us peer down

  1126. into the deepest recesses

  1127. of his heart,

  1128. what we find

  1129. is that Jesus

  1130. is not austere

  1131. and severe in heart.

  1132. Jesus is not high

  1133. and dignified in heart.

  1134. The one place

  1135. where Jesus

  1136. peers back the veil

  1137. and invites us

  1138. to peer into

  1139. his very heart,

1140. the depths of his heart,

  1141. what we discover

  1142. is that Jesus

  1143. is gentle

  1144. and lowly

  1145. in heart.

  1146. The word gentle

  1147. means meek

  1148. and meekness

  1149. means constrained strength.

  1150. Strength

  1151. that has been constrained

  1152. that you experience

  1153. gentleness.

  1154. When Jesus says

  1155. he is lowly,

  1156. lowly means

  1157. of humble origins,

  1158. of humble,

  1159. of low social status.

1160. What Jesus is saying here

1161. is that there is nobody

1162. who is not good enough,

  1163. not rich enough,

  1164. not strong enough,

  1165. not educated enough,

  1166. not religious enough

  1167. to come to me.

  1168. Jesus says,

  1169. I'm not one step

  1170. above anybody else.

1171. I have so lowed myself,

  1172. so humbled myself,

  1173. so taken on

1174. the nature of a servant

  1175. that anybody,

1176. no matter what your status,

  1177. your bank account,

  1178. your ethnicity,

  1179. no matter what anybody

  1180. in culture or society

  1181. says about you,

1182. you can come to me

1183. and I will not reject you.

  1184. You come to me

  1185. with your sin,

  1186. I won't reject you.

  1187. You come to me

  1188. broken and weary,

  1189. I'm here for you.

  1190. You come to me

  1191. exhausted and worn out,

  1192. I'm here for you.

  1193. I'm lowly

  1194. and gentle in heart.

  1195. Now friends,

  1196. of course,

  1197. that doesn't mean

  1198. that Jesus is weak.

1199. Look at what he says

  1200. in verse 27.

  1201. All authority

1202. has been given to me.

  1203. Jesus Christ,

  1204. the Son of God,

  1205. the one who is

1206. seated on the right hand

  1207. to God the Father

1208. in the glory of heaven,

  1209. clothed with glory,

  1210. the one who Revelation

  1211. says his eyes

  1212. are like fire,

1213. they pierce to our hearts.

  1214. Revelation says

  1215. out of his sword

  1216. comes a mouth,

1217. his word cuts to our hearts.

  1218. Revelation says

1219. that Jesus is the captain

1220. of the armies of heaven

  1221. and one day

  1222. he will come

  1223. and he will vanquish

  1224. and destroy his enemies.

  1225. Psalm 18 says this,

  1226. to the merciful

  1227. you are merciful,

  1228. but to the crooked

  1229. you seem torturous.

  1230. Jesus is not weak

  1231. by any stretch

  1232. of the imagination.

  1233. As tender

  1234. as his mercy

  1235. is towards those

  1236. who come to him,

  1237. so severe

  1238. will his judgment

  1239. be to those

  1240. who reject him.

  1241. So when Jesus says

  1242. I am gentle

  1243. and lowly,

  1244. he doesn't mean

  1245. weak and frothy

  1246. or light and weak.

  1247. But for those

  1248. who come to him,

1249. to those who do not

  1250. refuse him,

  1251. to those who yield

  1252. to him and surrender

  1253. to him,

  1254. friends,

  1255. we will find

1256. that even our worst sins,

  1257. even our greatest failings,

  1258. even our moment

  1259. of greatest insecurity,

  1260. even our supreme

  1261. weakness

  1262. and doubts

  1263. and anxiety

  1264. will never drain

  1265. or deplete

  1266. or limit

  1267. or exhaust

  1268. his tenderness,

  1269. his gentleness,

  1270. his mercy

  1271. and his rest

  1272. for those

  1273. who come to him.

  1274. Friends,

1275. when you think of Jesus,

  1276. what comes to mind?

  1277. Dane Orton

  1278. says it like this,

1279. Jesus is not trigger happy.

  1280. He's not harsh

  1281. and reactionary.

  1282. He's not easily

  1283. exasperated.

1284. I was thinking about it

  1285. this way,

  1286. this week.

  1287. Can I make a confession?

  1288. I get easily

  1289. exasperated.

  1290. Jesus does not

  1291. get easily

  1292. exasperated.

  1293. The posture

  1294. most natural

  1295. to Jesus

1296. is not a pointed finger

  1297. pointing out

  1298. your faults,

  1299. but open arms

  1300. saying,

  1301. come to me.

  1302. Gentleness

  1303. is not one way

  1304. Jesus occasionally

  1305. acts towards people,

  1306. towards those

1307. that have got it together.

  1308. Gentleness

  1309. is who he is.

1310. It is his very heart.

  1311. Friends,

1312. when we come to Jesus

  1313. exhausted

  1314. and worn out,

  1315. weary and anxious,

  1316. Jesus doesn't hold

  1317. his nose at us.

  1318. Jesus doesn't say,

1319. let me put on the latex gloves

1320. and I'll deal with you.

1321. Jesus doesn't sanitize his hands

1322. or ask us to sanitize our hands.

  1323. Jesus comes

  1324. with the most

  1325. welcoming of open braces

  1326. and says,

  1327. come to me,

  1328. you who are weary

  1329. and heavy laden

1330. and I will give you rest.

  1331. Friends,

1332. can you take him up on it?

1333. Let me ask you finally,

1334. how heavy is the junk

  1335. that you're carrying

  1336. on your back?

  1337. Seriously,

1338. the things that we look to

  1339. and trust

  1340. and how heavy

  1341. are those things?

1342. Have any of those things

  1343. given us rest?

  1344. Friends,

  1345. have sexual relations

  1346. given us rest?

  1347. Friends,

1348. have all sorts of relationships

  1349. that kill a boyfriend,

  1350. that kill a girlfriend.

  1351. Have those things

1352. really given our heart rest?

  1353. What about the things

  1354. that we buy?

  1355. That holiday home,

  1356. that home entertainment system,

  1357. that new watch.

  1358. Have those things

  1359. really given us rest?

  1360. Friends,

  1361. what about that

  1362. first class honors?

  1363. That straight A grade?

  1364. 100%.

  1365. Have those things

  1366. given your heart rest?

  1367. Friends,

  1368. Jesus Christ,

  1369. the sovereign God

  1370. of all creation,

1371. he makes a radical claim.

1372. He asks you to come

  1373. and take his burden.

  1374. Following Jesus

  1375. is the hardest thing

  1376. you'll ever do.

  1377. There's a yoke to embrace.

  1378. You must submit

  1379. to his authority.

  1380. You must surrender

  1381. to his ways.

1382. But I'll tell you this,

  1383. it works.

  1384. Jesus gives you rest

1385. that nothing in this world

  1386. will give you.

  1387. He brings rest

  1388. to every human being.

1389. The rest that only comes

1390. by being in right relationship

  1391. with him.

  1392. Let's pray together.

  1393. Oh, sovereign Lord,

  1394. wonderful maker,

  1395. magnificent God,

  1396. gentle and lowly king.

1397. God, we come to you

  1398. this morning

  1399. because we know

  1400. that in you

1401. our hearts truly find rest.

  1402. We come to you

  1403. this morning

1404. because as we sang earlier,

  1405. God, we need you.

  1406. Every hour,

  1407. we need you.

  1408. Father God,

  1409. so many of us

  1410. have,

  1411. like Augustine,

1412. God looked in a thousand places

1413. to all the lovely things

  1414. that you've created

  1415. for the rest

1416. that can only be found in you.

  1417. And God,

  1418. our souls are

  1419. exhausted.

  1420. Our souls are depleted.

  1421. Jesus,

  1422. we come to you

  1423. this morning.

1424. Come and give us your rest,

  1425. we pray.

  1426. Father God,

1427. as we come to you

  1428. in confession

  1429. and repentance,

1430. as we come to you

  1431. in faith,

  1432. won't you match

  1433. our simple faith

  1434. with your magnificent

  1435. bounding leaps of grace.

1436. Come and have your way,

  1437. we pray.

  1438. Amen.
