  1. The scripture reading comes from Jeremiah chapter 29.

    Jeremiah 29 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  4. These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem

  5. to the surviving elders of the exiles,

  6. and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people,

  7. whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  8. This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs,

  9. the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen,

  10. and the metal workers had departed from Jerusalem.

  11. The letter was sent by the hand of Elisa, the son of Shaphan,

  12. and Gamariah, the son of Hilkiah,

  13. whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.

  14. It said,

  15. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

  16. to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  17. Build houses and live in them.

  18. Plant gardens and eat their produce.

  19. Take wives and have sons and daughters.

  20. Take wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage,

  21. that they may bear sons and daughters.

  22. Multiply there and do not decrease,

  23. but seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile,

  24. and pray to the Lord on its behalf,

  25. for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

  26. For thus says the Lord of hosts,

  27. The God of Israel,

  28. do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you,

  29. and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,

  30. for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name.

  31. I did not send them, declares the Lord.

  32. For thus says the Lord,

  33. When 70 years are completed for Babylon,

  34. I will visit you,

  35. and I will fulfill to you my promise,

  36. and bring you back to this place.

  37. For I know the plans I have for you,

  38. declares the Lord,

  39. plans for welfare and not for evil,

  40. to give you a future and a hope.

  41. Then you will call upon me,

  42. and come and pray to me,

  43. and I will hear you.

  44. You will seek me and find me,

  45. when you seek me with all your heart.

  46. I will be found by you,

  47. declares the Lord.

  48. And I will restore your fortunes,

  49. and gather you from all the nations,

  50. and all the places where I have driven you,

  51. declares the Lord.

  52. And I will bring you back to the place

  53. from which I sent you into exile.

  54. This is the word of God.

  55. Great.

  56. Thank you, Betty.

  57. Well, good morning, everybody.

  58. It is great to see you again.

  59. If you are at the community center or online,

  60. welcome.

  61. If you are visiting us for the first time,

  62. it's really great to have you.

  63. Thanks for joining us this morning.

  64. My name is Kevin,

  65. and I'm one of the elder pastors here

  66. with Watermark.

  67. Why don't we pray together?

  68. We'll just pray briefly,

  69. and then we'll dive into this passage together.

  70. Heavenly Father, as we come this morning,

  71. we haven't come just for a pep talk.

  72. We haven't come just to hear

  73. a little bit of advice for our lives.

  74. We've come to hear from you,

  75. the living God,

  76. the majestic and awesome and glorious one.

  77. God, as we look at this wonderful passage

  78. in Jeremiah 29,

  79. won't you speak to us?

  80. God, I pray you'll speak to every one of us

  81. here at Ebenezer,

  82. every one of us at the community center,

  83. those at home.

  84. God, won't you drive your word into our hearts

  85. and give us a vision for what you've called us to

  86. and the life you've called us to live in this city.

  87. Why you've placed us in Hong Kong for such a time as this.

  88. God, I pray that these won't just be the words

  89. of human ideas or thoughts.

  90. This will be your word, God, coming from your heart.

  91. Speak to us, we pray,

  92. in your wonderful and glorious name.

  93. Amen.

  94. I wonder if you have ever received an unexpected letter

  95. or maybe a surprising email.

  96. In 2011, I one day received a surprising email,

  97. out the blue,

  98. from a lady that,

  99. a real estate agent that had previously

  100. helped Claire and I buy a little apartment in Cape Town.

  101. And the email went like this.

  102. The subject line was in capital letters,

  103. said offended.

  104. And then this was the email.

  105. This is a screenshot of the actual email.

  106. It says,

  107. Hi, Kevin.

  108. You sent me a Twitter response

  109. from a photo you have found of me.

  110. I take great offense at what you've said

  111. on your Twitter post to me.

  112. You profess yourself to be the greatest follower of God.

  113. Well, I don't think so.

  114. After what you've posted on your Twitter wall,

  115. you're a false person.

  116. Erica, P.S., send regards to your wife and family.

  117. No, she didn't say that for us.

  118. There wasn't any regards being sent.

  119. And what had happened was that

  120. in my very short-lived Twitter account,

  121. someone had hacked my account

  122. and sent a message to a whole lot of contacts

  123. saying,

  124. I found this embarrassing photo of you

  125. and I'm going to post it online.

  126. Ha, ha, ha.

  127. And this person had received this

  128. and was very upset

  129. about this supposed picture I had found of her.

  130. Today we are starting this series

  131. looking at the book of Daniel.

  132. And we're not actually going to get into Daniel today.

  133. We're going to start Daniel 1 next week.

  134. We're going to look at this passage in Jeremiah 29

  135. because it kind of sets up the context

  136. of what's happening in the book of Daniel.

  137. And as far as surprising or bizarre letters go,

  138. Jeremiah 29 is one of the most bizarre letters

  139. that anyone would have received.

  140. Jeremiah 29 verse 11

    Jeremiah 29:11

  141. is a very, very famous verse in the Bible.

  142. And it's certainly a favorite for Christians

  143. who love making Christian merchandise.

  144. You know, T-shirts and coffee mugs

  145. and coasters and notebooks and pens

  146. and all sorts of other things.

  147. Because this verse is,

  148. I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.

  149. Plans for peace and not for evil.

  150. Plans to give you a hope and a future.

  151. And so Christians throughout the ages

  152. have loved this verse.

  153. It's one of those verses we attach to

  154. all sorts of things

  155. as a kind of promise of God's kindness to us.

  156. The only problem is that

  157. if those mug manufacturers or T-shirt manufacturers

  158. actually knew the context

  159. and the plans that God had for His people,

  160. they might start looking for another verse.

  161. Because what were the plans that God had for His people?

  162. Well, there was something like this.

  163. Israel's arch enemies, the Babylonians,

  164. are going to march into Judah,

  165. siege Jerusalem,

  166. destroy the city walls,

  167. burn down all the buildings,

  168. raise the temple to the ground,

  169. burn it flat,

  170. steal all the articles out of the temple,

  171. anything of gold or silver,

  172. and then march the people of Israel

  173. back to Babylon

  174. where they will serve their arch enemies

  175. as slaves for the next 70 years.

  176. For I know the plans that I have for you,

  177. says the Lord.

  178. These are not the kind of plans

  179. that Israel wanted.

  180. Now the reason why this is happening

  181. is because for hundreds of years,

  182. the nation of Israel,

  183. particularly the southern kingdom of Judah,

  184. has been in constant rebellion against God,

  185. constantly denying Him,

  186. rejecting Him,

  187. going their own way,

  188. and God has sent prophet after prophet

  189. warning them

  190. against their tolerance of sin

  191. and their lack of repentance,

  192. but to no avail.

  193. They don't want to listen.

  194. And so Isaiah 30 captures this.

  195. Look at what Isaiah 30 says.

  196. It says,

  197. Thus says the Lord God,

  198. the Holy One of Israel,

  199. In repentance and rest,

  200. you will be saved.

  201. In quietness and in trust

  202. will be your strength.

  203. But you were unwilling.

  204. You said,

  205. No, we will run away on horses.

  206. Therefore, you will run away as exiles.

  207. You said,

  208. We will ride on swift steeds.

  209. Therefore, your pursuers will be swift.

  210. God's calling His people back to Him

  211. and they say,

  212. No thanks.

  213. We think we'll look after ourselves.

  214. And the consequence of this

  215. is utterly disastrous.

  216. Friends, maybe just as a side note here,

  217. you may be here this morning

  218. and think,

  219. If only those Christians knew

  220. what is going on in my life.

  221. If only they really knew.

  222. I know how this game works.

  223. I arrive at church on Sunday.

  224. I speak the right language.

  225. I say the right things.

  226. And nobody has a clue.

  227. Friends, God says that

  228. He will not be mocked.

  229. You can't sow or invest in destruction

  230. without getting a return on that investment.

  231. You sow to destruction,

  232. you'll yield destructive patterns of life.

  233. And that's what's happening here.

  234. Having invested in destruction,

  235. they're getting a return on their investment.

  236. And as is always the case,

  237. it always is more than what they bargained for.

  238. And so,

  239. because of Judah's constant rejection of God,

  240. God has brought the Babylonians against him.

  241. And the Babylonians are his instrument

  242. for judgment and discipline.

  243. You may remember,

  244. this is what the whole book of Habakkuk is all about.

  245. We started preaching through it a few years ago.

  246. And so,

  247. the Babylonians come

  248. and they overthrow Judah

  249. and they take these people back to Babylon.

  250. And Nebuchadnezzar,

  251. the king of Babylon,

  252. does this in three stages.

  253. The first one is 605 BC.

  254. The second one,

  255. about nine years later,

  256. 598 BC.

  257. And then the second one,

  258. 10 years later,

  259. 586 BC.

  260. And in the second instance,

  261. what he does is he comes

  262. and he takes the king

  263. and the queen

  264. and all the cultural

  265. and political

  266. and economic elites.

  267. He removes them from Jerusalem

  268. and he takes them back to Babylon.

  269. And there he introduces them

  270. into a re-education program.

  271. He wants to re-educate them

  272. according to Babylonian values

  273. and customs and belief

  274. to indoctrinate them in their ways.

  275. And that's how Daniel,

  276. that we're going to look at next week,

  277. ends up in Babylon.

  278. He works in the kind of palace.

  279. And so Nebuchadnezzar takes him back to Babylon

  280. and there he starts working

  281. in Nebuchadnezzar's palace.

  282. But what happens is that

  283. Nebuchadnezzar installs

  284. his own puppet king

  285. on the throne in Jerusalem,

  286. a man by the name of Zedekiah.

  287. But soon Zedekiah rebels

  288. against Nebuchadnezzar

  289. and says,

  290. I'm going to do things my own way.

  291. And so Nebuchadnezzar comes

  292. a third time,

  293. 586 BC,

  294. and this time he finishes off the job

  295. once and for all.

  296. And the Bible tells us

  297. that when Nebuchadnezzar came

  298. and destroyed Jerusalem,

  299. this last,

  300. this third time,

  301. he was absolutely ruthless.

  302. And so what he does

  303. is Zedekiah,

  304. this king,

  305. feels like,

  306. let's run away.

  307. And so in the middle of the night,

  308. he and his bodyguards

  309. find a gap in the wall

  310. and they try and escape

  311. out of the city of Jerusalem

  312. when the Babylonians

  313. have besieged it.

  314. And Nebuchadnezzar catches this king

  315. and as punishment,

  316. what he does

  317. is he kills Zedekiah's children

  318. in front of his eyes

  319. and then he pokes out his eyes

  320. so that the last thing

  321. that he sees,

  322. his lasting memory,

  323. is that of his own children

  324. being killed in front of him.

  325. And then after that,

  326. Nebuchadnezzar destroys Jerusalem

  327. absolutely.

  328. He burns every building,

  329. he destroys the temple,

  330. he steals all the articles,

  331. everything religious and sacred

  332. to the people of Jerusalem,

  333. he steals and takes it back to Babylon

  334. and he marches the people of Jerusalem

  335. back to Babylon

  336. and makes them his slaves,

  337. his exiles.

  338. One pastor,

  339. a man by the name of Stephen Rain,

  340. said it like this,

  341. it is impossible to exaggerate

  342. the trauma of the events

  343. that unfolded

  344. with the overflow of Jerusalem.

  345. Everything of value to these people

  346. whether physical,

  347. emotional,

  348. spiritual

  349. had been ripped away from them.

  350. Psalm 137 captures

  351. some of the gravity

  352. of what they felt.

  353. Listen to what Psalm 137 says,

  354. the people of God

  355. are marched off to Babylon

  356. and this is what they write.

  357. By the waters of Babylon

  358. we sat down and wept

  359. when we remembered Zion.

  360. Zion is Jerusalem.

  361. On the willows there

  362. we hang up our liars and our harps.

  363. For there our captors

  364. required of us songs.

  365. Our tormentors mirthed

  366. and of its laughter.

  367. They said to us,

  368. sing us one of those songs of Zion.

  369. The Babylonians are laughing at Jerusalem

  370. and said,

  371. hey, don't you guys like singing

  372. those Hebrew songs?

  373. Sing us one of your songs

  374. about how great God is.

  375. How shall we sing

  376. the Lord's song

  377. in a foreign land?

  378. O daughter of Babylon

  379. doomed to be destroyed

  380. blessed shall he be

  381. who repays you

  382. for what you have done to us.

  383. Derek Kidner

  384. an Old Testament scholar

  385. says this,

  386. every line of this psalm

  387. is alive with pain.

  388. God's people

  389. are in a foreign land

  390. being ruled by some people

  391. that they don't love and respect

  392. and their hearts are alive

  393. with pain

  394. because they are away

  395. from their homeland

  396. and in foreign territory.

  397. They are living as exiles

  398. in Babylon.

  399. Babylon.

  400. What should God's people do

  401. when they address changes

  402. from Israel

  403. to the heart

  404. of the pagan district?

  405. Well,

  406. what we have before us

  407. is a letter

  408. that Jeremiah

  409. writes to the exiles

  410. in Babylon.

  411. When Nebuchadnezzar

  412. took the people

  413. to Babylon,

  414. he took all the cultural

  415. leaders who said,

  416. but he left behind

  417. the poorest of the poorest.

  418. He left behind those

  419. that he thought

  420. were insignificant.

  421. And one of those

  422. is Jeremiah the prophet.

  423. So Jeremiah is in Jerusalem.

  424. It's all been destroyed.

  425. There's just smoldering

  426. buildings around him.

  427. The cities are ruined.

  428. But he writes a letter

  429. to the exiles in Babylon.

  430. And what does God

  431. want to say to them?

  432. Well,

  433. that's what Jeremiah 29

  434. is all about.

  435. Now,

  436. throughout the Bible,

  437. Babylon is described

  438. as the symbol

  439. of all that is evil

  440. and pagan

  441. and wicked

  442. and wrong

  443. with the world.

  444. Remember Genesis 11,

  445. there's the Tower of Babel.

  446. That is the precursor

  447. to Babylon

  448. where the people said,

  449. who is God?

  450. We'll be our own gods.

  451. Let's make a monument

  452. to our own glory.

  453. In Daniel chapter 4,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  454. there's Nebuchadnezzar.

  455. One day he comes out

  456. on the balcony

  457. of his house.

  458. He looks over Babylon

  459. and this is what he says.

  460. Is this not great Babylon,

  461. which I have built

  462. by my mighty power

  463. as a testimony

  464. for the glory

  465. of my majesty?

  466. Everything about Babylon

  467. rings with power

  468. and arrogance

  469. and it's the very heart

  470. of the city of man.

  471. And so,

  472. what would God

  473. want to say?

  474. Well,

  475. in this letter,

  476. God says something

  477. very surprising

  478. because he tells

  479. the people of Israel

  480. to make themselves

  481. at home

  482. in Babylon

  483. because God

  484. in his sovereignty

  485. has sent them there

  486. so that God

  487. can build his city,

  488. the city of God,

  489. right in the heart

  490. of the city of man.

  491. In a sense,

  492. Nebuchadnezzar

  493. takes these people

  494. back to Babylon

  495. but in a far greater sense,

  496. actually God

  497. is the one

  498. who sent them there,

  499. not as exiles

  500. but as missionaries.

  501. God has sent

  502. his people there

  503. to build the city

  504. of God

  505. in the heart

  506. of the city of man.

  507. And that's the main point

  508. of Jeremiah's letter

  509. is that

  510. there being in Babylon

  511. is not some cosmic mistake.

  512. It's not because

  513. God fell asleep one day

  514. and Satan

  515. quickly overcame him.

  516. It's not because

  517. Satan overcame God.

  518. God's people

  519. are in Babylon

  520. by his sovereign will.

  521. God is under control

  522. and therefore

  523. God can be trusted.

  524. And that despite

  525. how things appear,

  526. God has plans

  527. for his people

  528. even in the midst

  529. of Babylon.

  530. I have plans

  531. for you

  532. in purposes

  533. says the Lord.

  534. Plans for your welfare.

  535. Plans for your prosper.

  536. Plans to give you

  537. a hope

  538. and a future.

  539. But as God's going to say

  540. this is only going to happen

  541. if you trust me

  542. if you live

  543. radically faithful lives

  544. to me

  545. in the heart of Babylon

  546. as you surrender

  547. and submit to me.

  548. And friends

  549. that's actually

  550. what the whole book

  551. of Daniel

  552. is all about.

  553. It shows us

  554. what does it look like

  555. to live

  556. as God's people

  557. in the midst

  558. of an ungodly world.

  559. Okay?

  560. Now

  561. let's dive into this passage

  562. and see

  563. what it says.

  564. Before we do that

  565. one last thing.

  566. God's letter

  567. to the people

  568. in Babylon

  569. says

  570. you might be here

  571. because of

  572. some other agenda

  573. but I've sent you here

  574. because I've got plans

  575. for your life.

  576. And friends

  577. that's actually

  578. the same for us today.

  579. You may be in Hong Kong

  580. because your company

  581. sent you here

  582. for a year or two.

  583. You may have come

  584. to Hong Kong

  585. on a two year contract.

  586. You may have come here

  587. to get some work experience

  588. or to travel the world

  589. for some other reason.

  590. But in another sense

  591. if you're a follower of Jesus

  592. God has sent you here

  593. because you've got a plan

  594. and a purpose for your life.

  595. God has sent you here

  596. to this great city

  597. the Pearl of the East

  598. this fragrant harbor

  599. as a missionary

  600. to build the city of God

  601. in the midst

  602. of the city of man.

  603. And so let's see

  604. what God says

  605. to his people here.

  606. Three things

  607. we're going to see today.

  608. The first one

  609. God says is

  610. put down your roots.

  611. Put down your roots.

  612. Look at what God says

  613. in verse 4 to 9.

  614. He says

  615. Thus says the Lord of hosts

  616. the God of Israel

  617. Build houses

  618. and live in them.

  619. Plant gardens

  620. and eat of their produce.

  621. Take wives

  622. and have sons and daughters.

  623. Take wives to your sons

  624. and give your daughters

  625. in marriage

  626. that they may bear

  627. sons and daughters.

  628. Multiply there

  629. and do not decrease.

  630. When the Israelites

  631. first went to Babylon

  632. a bunch of the religious leaders

  633. were saying

  634. just relax

  635. God's just letting off

  636. some steam

  637. he just needs to calm down

  638. we'll only be here

  639. a year or two

  640. and then we'll go back

  641. to Israel

  642. and everything will be fine.

  643. And what they were really saying

  644. was just sit on your hands

  645. sit tight

  646. don't get too involved

  647. in the city

  648. let's just stay

  649. in our Jewish bubble

  650. here on the waters of Babylon

  651. and pretty soon

  652. things will go back

  653. to the way

  654. that we've known them.

  655. But Jeremiah writes

  656. and he says

  657. no, no, no

  658. don't let those false prophets

  659. deceive you

  660. God is going to plant you here

  661. for 70 years

  662. and he's asking you

  663. to take root here

  664. and the reason is

  665. because God has got

  666. plants for you

  667. God wants you to know

  668. things about him

  669. and about yourselves

  670. that you'll only discover

  671. as you put down

  672. your roots

  673. and as you plant yourselves

  674. here in the city

  675. of Babylon.

  676. God wants you to discover

  677. who he is

  678. and who you are

  679. but you'll only find that out

  680. as you live lives

  681. of radical faithfulness

  682. to him

  683. even in this ungodly world.

  684. Look what he says

  685. in verse 12.

  686. He says

  687. then you will call upon me

  688. and come and pray to me

  689. and I will hear you

  690. then you will seek me

  691. and find me

  692. when you seek me

  693. with all your heart.

  694. The problem with Israel

  695. is that they have not

  696. been seeking God

  697. they've been seeking

  698. all sorts of other gods

  699. that's why they're in Babylon

  700. because they've gone

  701. their own way

  702. and God says

  703. as you put down

  704. your roots

  705. as you make yourself

  706. at home here

  707. then you will find out

  708. what it means

  709. to be my people

  710. in this broken world.

  711. Friends, it's one thing

  712. to be faithful

  713. to God in Jerusalem

  714. the epicenter of Jewishness.

  715. You've got the temple

  716. you've got the rabbis

  717. you've got the symbols

  718. you've got the Torah

  719. no, that's one thing

  720. but to be faithful

  721. to God

  722. in the heart

  723. of the city of man

  724. the heart of Babylon

  725. that's another thing

  726. altogether.

  727. But friends

  728. isn't that true

  729. for us as well?

  730. It's one thing

  731. to be faithful to God

  732. to sing of His covenant promises

  733. to say

  734. great is your name

  735. here on Sunday morning

  736. you've got the band

  737. you've got followers

  738. of Christ around you

  739. but what about

  740. in the office place?

  741. What about

  742. in the courts of law?

  743. What about

  744. in home?

  745. What about

  746. in the classrooms?

  747. That's where it really counts

  748. that's where God wants us

  749. to be the people of God

  750. even in the midst

  751. of an ungodly world

  752. that's where it really counts.

  753. And so look at what God says here

  754. He says

  755. put down your roots

  756. build houses

  757. how many know

  758. that if you buy a house

  759. and then 70 years time

  760. everyone's going to leave

  761. you're probably not going to get

  762. a good return

  763. on your house

  764. right?

  765. The Babylonians

  766. are not going to pay

  767. top dollar

  768. for those houses

  769. when suddenly

  770. the market is flooded

  771. there's plenty of houses

  772. on the market

  773. He says

  774. build houses

  775. plant gardens

  776. eat the produce

  777. be fruitful

  778. and multiply

  779. multiply

  780. and do not decrease

  781. Now quick question

  782. what does that remind you of?

  783. Where else in the Bible

  784. does God say

  785. be fruitful

  786. and multiply?

  787. In

  788. Genesis 1

  789. right?

  790. The Garden of Eden

  791. What's God saying here?

  792. He's saying in a sense

  793. I want you to bring

  794. Eden

  795. into Babylon

  796. I want you

  797. my people

  798. to bring the kingdom

  799. of heaven

  800. on here on earth

  801. God is saying

  802. I want you to build

  803. the city of God

  804. right here

  805. even in the midst

  806. of the city of man

  807. Now friends

  808. what does that mean

  809. for us here in Hong Kong?

  810. Well one of the phenomena

  811. of big cities

  812. is that

  813. so many people

  814. move into the city

  815. into a big city

  816. like Hong Kong

  817. in order to use the city

  818. for what we can get from it

  819. rather than invest

  820. in the long term

  821. good and health

  822. of the city

  823. and so many people

  824. we think

  825. hey I'm here

  826. it's

  827. my company sent me here

  828. it's an opportunity

  829. to grow personally

  830. or professionally

  831. it's an opportunity

  832. to make some money

  833. before I go home

  834. it's an opportunity

  835. to travel

  836. and see the world

  837. all that

  838. without contributing

  839. to the long term

  840. health of the city

  841. but what we see here

  842. is that

  843. what happens

  844. if we're to see ourselves

  845. not just as those

  846. who use the city

  847. but as missionaries

  848. sent into the city

  849. for its well being

  850. and for its good

  851. what happens

  852. if God wants

  853. to send us

  854. to Hong Kong

  855. not just for what

  856. we can get from it

  857. but actually how

  858. we can contribute

  859. towards it

  860. and what that means

  861. is that Christians

  862. actually we need to learn

  863. how to be a

  864. counter-cultural influence

  865. in the heart

  866. of the city

  867. where we're not just

  868. using the city

  869. for our own benefit

  870. we're not isolating

  871. from the city

  872. in our own little

  873. Christian bubbles

  874. but neither are we

  875. so part of the city

  876. that we adopt

  877. its values

  878. as part of our own

  879. rather what God

  880. wants us to do

  881. is to go into the cities

  882. and yet stay distinct

  883. from the city

  884. because we have

  885. our own Christian values

  886. even as we live

  887. in the city

  888. and live for its well being

  889. and its benefit

  890. Tim Keller says this

  891. Christians should demonstrate

  892. what an alternative

  893. human culture

  894. one that's based

  895. on the gospel

  896. can look like

  897. Christians should demonstrate

  898. in the heart of Hong Kong

  899. what does it look like

  900. to use money

  901. and sex

  902. and power

  903. not just

  904. for our own benefit

  905. not to use others

  906. how to prop ourselves up

  907. but how do we use

  908. our money

  909. how do we use

  910. our power

  911. for the well being

  912. and the blessing

  913. of others

  914. friends obviously

  915. our city Hong Kong

  916. has gone through

  917. massive changes

  918. everything's up in the air

  919. and there's so many

  920. questions that are

  921. on people's minds

  922. and one of the questions

  923. that as Hong Kong

  924. as many of us

  925. are asking is

  926. where is my future

  927. secure

  928. should I be

  929. should I stay here

  930. should I look

  931. to move

  932. now friends

  933. I want to say

  934. that's not

  935. the wrong question

  936. to ask

  937. that's not a bad

  938. question

  939. as Christians

  940. we should be responsible

  941. we've got to be responsible

  942. for our families

  943. we've got to be responsible

  944. for our aging parents

  945. and so that's not

  946. a bad question

  947. to ask

  948. but maybe one of the

  949. questions that God

  950. wants us to ask

  951. in addition to that

  952. is

  953. God are you possibly

  954. asking me to stay here

  955. for the long term

  956. well being

  957. and the blessing

  958. of the city

  959. God is it possible

  960. that you're asking

  961. me to be here

  962. and to contribute

  963. to the long term

  964. good of the city

  965. and you know what

  966. that's going to cost

  967. involve great sacrifice

  968. that's going to

  969. involve great cost

  970. but remember what

  971. John the apostle

  972. says about Jesus

  973. in John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  974. he says

  975. Jesus

  976. the word became

  977. flesh

  978. and dwelt

  979. amongst us

  980. the actual Greek

  981. this is

  982. Jesus pitched

  983. his tent

  984. amongst us

  985. Jesus didn't just

  986. helicopter

  987. into Jerusalem

  988. at age 30

  989. and say

  990. right

  991. let's get this

  992. show going

  993. right

  994. Jesus

  995. takes on

  996. our nature

  997. Jesus takes on

  998. flesh and blood

  999. and Jesus is born

  1000. into this world

  1001. as a human being

  1002. with all the brokenness

  1003. all the insecurity

  1004. all the fears

  1005. all the dangers

  1006. Jesus came

  1007. and pitched

  1008. his tent

  1009. as well

  1010. he laid down

  1011. his roots

  1012. he got involved

  1013. in the heart

1014. of what is going on

  1015. so that Jesus

  1016. could really bring

  1017. the kingdom of God

1018. to the kingdom of the world

  1019. that Jesus could bring

  1020. the city of God

1021. into the city of man

  1022. Jesus came

  1023. and dwelt amongst us

  1024. and Jesus says

  1025. as his disciples

  1026. he says

1027. come and be with me

  1028. come and follow me

1029. come and become like me

1030. come and do the things

  1031. that I did

  1032. put your roots down

  1033. in the city

  1034. for it's good

  1035. okay

1036. so put down your roots

  1037. second thing is this

  1038. Jesus says

  1039. Jeremiah says

  1040. seek the welfare

  1041. of the city

  1042. look at verse 7

  1043. with me

  1044. Jeremiah writes

  1045. to these exiles

  1046. in Babylon

  1047. and he says

  1048. seek the welfare

  1049. of the city

  1050. where I've sent you

  1051. into exile

  1052. for in its welfare

  1053. you will find

  1054. your own welfare

  1055. now the word welfare

1056. here is the Hebrew word

  1057. shalom

  1058. okay

  1059. and shalom

  1060. doesn't just mean

  1061. peace

  1062. it means a holistic

  1063. harmony

  1064. that is involved

  1065. that touches

  1066. every area

  1067. of our lives

  1068. so shalom

  1069. means this

  1070. harmonious flourishing

  1071. this well being

  1072. personally and psychologically

  1073. so harmony

  1074. within myself

  1075. spiritually

  1076. harmony with me

  1077. and God

  1078. relationally

  1079. harmony with

  1080. those in my life

  1081. even culturally

  1082. and socially

  1083. harmony in society

  1084. and it's where

  1085. all of life

  1086. is marked by

  1087. this fullness

  1088. this rest

  1089. this peace

  1090. this harmony

  1091. that every human being

  1092. longs for

  1093. it's the garden

  1094. of Eden

1095. now one of the main

  1096. points of scripture

  1097. is that the deep

  1098. harmony

  1099. the soul rest

  1100. that all of us

  1101. long for

  1102. that we spoke

  1103. about last week

  1104. this deep shalom

  1105. that our hearts

  1106. long for

  1107. is never found

  1108. apart from God

  1109. himself

  1110. remember our scripture

  1111. last week

  1112. Jesus says

  1113. come to me

  1114. all you who are

  1115. weary and heavy laden

1116. and I will give you rest

  1117. the grand narrative

  1118. of scripture

  1119. is that we are

  1120. created to be

  1121. at shalom

  1122. with God

  1123. but because of our

  1124. sin we've been

  1125. cut off from God

  1126. and we separated

  1127. from him

  1128. and now we live

  1129. with a state of

  1130. restlessness

  1131. in our hearts

  1132. remember Augustine's

  1133. great quote

  1134. we were made

  1135. for you oh God

  1136. and our hearts

  1137. will always be

  1138. restless

  1139. until they find

  1140. their rest

  1141. in you

  1142. and so

  1143. look at what God

  1144. says to the

  1145. exiles

  1146. who are living

  1147. in the heart

1148. of the city of man

  1149. in pagan Babylon

  1150. he says

  1151. I've sent you there

  1152. that you may seek

  1153. the shalom

  1154. the peace

  1155. the prosperity

  1156. of Babylon

  1157. now

  1158. what does that mean

  1159. what does that mean

1160. for us here in Hong Kong

  1161. God says to us

  1162. watermark

  1163. I've called you

  1164. to Hong Kong

  1165. not just to enrich

  1166. yourselves

  1167. not just to get

  1168. some experience

  1169. I've called you

  1170. to seek

  1171. the shalom

  1172. and the blessing

  1173. the welfare

  1174. of this city

  1175. while we live here

  1176. what does that mean

1177. well it means a couple

  1178. of things

1179. the first thing it means

  1180. is

  1181. on the one hand

  1182. it means proclaiming

  1183. the gospel

  1184. this is the essence

  1185. of who we are

  1186. we are a gospel

  1187. proclaiming community

  1188. friends if you're not

  1189. a Christian this morning

  1190. that might sound

  1191. bigoted

  1192. and judgmental

  1193. and arrogant

1194. that we go out there

  1195. telling everyone

  1196. that we're right

  1197. and that they're wrong

1198. but that's not the heart

  1199. of evangelism at all

  1200. the reason we want

  1201. to tell people

  1202. about the gospel

  1203. is because of what

  1204. Jeremiah says here

  1205. we want the shalom

  1206. we want the well-being

  1207. we want the peace

  1208. of our city

  1209. and we know

  1210. that there'll never

  1211. be true peace

  1212. apart from

  1213. reconciliation with God

  1214. remember what

  1215. Martin Lloyd-Jones says

  1216. you'll never have

  1217. the peace of God

  1218. without first being

  1219. at peace with God

  1220. the reason we go

  1221. and proclaim the gospel

  1222. is because our city

  1223. is so unrestful

  1224. our city is full

  1225. of restlessness

  1226. and we long

  1227. for our neighbors

  1228. and our family

  1229. and our colleagues

  1230. and our friends

  1231. to experience the deep

  1232. shalom that God

  1233. wants for them

1234. and so we are a gospel

  1235. proclaiming community

1236. the only way for everyone

  1237. or anyone

1238. to have real lasting peace

  1239. is through believing

  1240. what Jesus did

  1241. on the cross

  1242. confessing our need

  1243. for him

  1244. and coming to him

  1245. in faith and repentance

  1246. and so that's why

  1247. at Watermark Mission

1248. is at the very heart

  1249. of what we do

  1250. because we are gospel

  1251. proclaiming community

1252. but that's not the only

1253. thing God asks us to

1254. because he also asks us

1255. to live out the gospel

  1256. in other words

  1257. we proclaim the gospel

  1258. with word

  1259. but we also proclaim

  1260. the gospel with deed

  1261. we as Jesus did

  1262. we go out teaching

  1263. and proclaiming

  1264. who God is

1265. but we also go out

1266. doing good to our city

  1267. friends we are called

  1268. to proclaim the gospel

  1269. in word and deed

  1270. and that means

  1271. that Christians

1272. we work for the peace

  1273. and the security

  1274. and the justice

  1275. and the prosperity

  1276. of the entire city

  1277. not just Christian communities

  1278. it means that

  1279. as citizens of heaven

  1280. Christians should be

  1281. the very best citizens

  1282. of Hong Kong

  1283. the very best citizens

  1284. of Hong Kong

  1285. because we walk

  1286. in the footsteps

  1287. of the one

1288. who laid down his life

  1289. even for his enemies

  1290. think about that

  1291. for a second

  1292. God's called us here

  1293. as citizens of heaven

1294. to be the very best citizens

  1295. of Hong Kong

  1296. I don't know if you remember

  1297. a few weeks ago

  1298. we were preaching

  1299. through Matthew's gospel

1300. and we got to Matthew chapter 9

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

1301. and Jesus is having a meal

  1302. with some tax collectors

  1303. and some sex workers

1304. and a bunch of other people

  1305. and the religious leaders

  1306. come to Jesus' disciples

  1307. and they say

  1308. how can your rabbi

  1309. be having a meal

  1310. with those scumbags

  1311. with those people

  1312. surely

  1313. how can Jesus

  1314. associate with them

  1315. and Jesus says

1316. this is the very reason

  1317. I've come

1318. I've come to bring peace

  1319. to the city

  1320. I haven't come

  1321. just to hang out

1322. with those that have got it

  1323. all together

  1324. I've come to call

  1325. sinners to repentance

  1326. I've come to bring

  1327. wholeness and shalom

1328. to those that need it

  1329. Jesus says

  1330. the reason he came

  1331. is to bring shalom

  1332. his restorative

  1333. redemptive

  1334. healing shalom

  1335. to the pain

  1336. and the brokenness

  1337. of our world

  1338. and friends

1339. as challenging as it is

  1340. that's what God

1341. calls us to as well

1342. and so what does that

  1343. look like practically

  1344. well it means

  1345. that as Christians

  1346. we're always looking

  1347. for an opportunity

  1348. to tell people

  1349. about Jesus

1350. it means the Uber driver

  1351. he's stuck with you

  1352. you've got 10 minutes

  1353. with him

1354. he's not going to go anywhere

  1355. well I guess he's got

  1356. the steering wheel

1357. maybe he could go somewhere

1358. maybe he could hijack you

  1359. and take you somewhere

1360. but it means telling people

  1361. about Jesus

  1362. the driver

  1363. the taxi driver

  1364. our neighbours

  1365. it means giving out

  1366. Christian books to those

  1367. it means inviting people

  1368. to outreach opportunities

  1369. we're always looking out

1370. for ways to help people

1371. find true and lasting peace

1372. but you know what it also means

1373. it means paying a fair

  1374. and adequate wage

1375. to those that work for us

1376. whether those in our home

1377. or whether those in the office

  1378. it means paying

  1379. and treating people

  1380. with dignity and honour

1381. it means foreign domestic helpers

  1382. that work for Christians

1383. should be the most honoured

1384. and respected foreign domestic workers

  1385. in our city

  1386. friends it means

  1387. rather than spending

1388. our entire budget on ourselves

1389. maybe setting aside a portion

  1390. to support and finance

  1391. and underwrite

1392. those that are doing good work

  1393. in our city

  1394. and prospering

1395. and bringing back the peace

1396. and the shalom of our city

  1397. it means extending grace

  1398. and forgiveness

1399. to those that have hurt us

  1400. or wronged us

  1401. seeking reconciliation

  1402. friends it means

  1403. helping women

  1404. that have been abused

  1405. and used by men

  1406. for their bodies

1407. to get out of the slavery

  1408. of the sex industry

  1409. and to find work

  1410. and employment

1411. that is full of dignity

  1412. and honour

  1413. friends it means

  1414. opening up our lives

  1415. and our hearts

1416. and maybe even our homes

1417. to those that are considered outsiders

  1418. those that are part

  1419. of another ethnicity

  1420. or another race

  1421. those that are part

  1422. of a different

  1423. socio-economic bracket

  1424. it means maybe fostering

  1425. vulnerable children

  1426. in our city

  1427. maybe even adopting

  1428. a child

  1429. that doesn't have a family

  1430. it means coming alongside

  1431. single moms

  1432. and teenage moms

  1433. and saying

1434. I know your life is tough

1435. and we want to come inside

1436. and be there for you

  1437. and support you

  1438. and to love you

1439. and do what we can

  1440. to bring shalom

  1441. and peace

  1442. to your life

  1443. friends for some people

  1444. and Christians

1445. should be at the forefront

  1446. of this

  1447. it means maybe even

  1448. lobbying government

1449. or setting up a work tank

  1450. or an NGO

  1451. or some kind of

  1452. program

  1453. to ensure

  1454. there's just

  1455. and equitable laws

  1456. and policies

  1457. in Hong Kong

  1458. it means fighting

  1459. for the rights

  1460. of refugees

  1461. and asylum seekers

  1462. in our city

  1463. Tim Keller says this

1464. and this is really profound

1465. and I want us to think

  1466. about this

  1467. as Christians

  1468. we don't just use

  1469. the resources

  1470. of the city

  1471. to build

  1472. a great big church

  1473. actually Christians

  1474. use the resources

  1475. within the church

  1476. to build

  1477. a great city

1478. let me say that again

  1479. as Christians

  1480. we don't use

  1481. the resources

  1482. of the city

  1483. to build the church

1484. so that we can get

  1485. a bigger

  1486. and more powerful

  1487. and stronger

  1488. and more famous church

  1489. we're not trying

  1490. to build our name

  1491. actually as Christians

  1492. we use the resources

1493. that God has given us

  1494. to advance

  1495. and cultivate

  1496. the prosperity

  1497. and the blessing

  1498. and the shalom

  1499. of our city

  1500. the goal of Watermark

1501. is not just to have

  1502. a great church

  1503. it's to have a great city

  1504. and that's why

1505. God has planted us here

  1506. and so Jeremiah writes

  1507. and he says

  1508. seek the shalom

  1509. the welfare

  1510. of your city

  1511. for in its welfare

1512. you will find your own

  1513. and isn't that amazing

  1514. that God says

  1515. the shalom

1516. that so many of us

  1517. long for

  1518. isn't found

  1519. as we divorce ourselves

  1520. from the city

  1521. and live in our

  1522. Christian babbles

  1523. and just work for

  1524. a Christian organization

  1525. and only have

  1526. Christian friends

  1527. actually the shalom

  1528. and the blessing

  1529. that we long for

  1530. is found

  1531. as we work

  1532. with God

  1533. in the midst

  1534. of our city

  1535. and bring the kingdom

  1536. of God

  1537. to our world

  1538. as we join God

  1539. in bringing

  1540. the city of God

1541. to the city of man

  1542. in that very place

  1543. is where we find

  1544. the shalom

  1545. and the blessing

  1546. and the peace

  1547. that we long for

  1548. friends

  1549. you'll never find

  1550. the peace

  1551. that your heart

  1552. longs for

  1553. simply by going

  1554. on holidays

1555. and sitting on the beach

  1556. you'll find it

  1557. by joining God

  1558. in what he's doing

  1559. in this city

  1560. as we join him

  1561. seeking the blessing

  1562. of our city

  1563. is that okay

1564. does that make any sense

  1565. okay

1566. I've got one last point

1567. let's see if we can

  1568. revive it

  1569. okay

  1570. so

  1571. firstly

  1572. put down your roots

  1573. make this city home

  1574. ask God

  1575. is this

1576. God do you want me

  1577. to stay here

  1578. for the long haul

  1579. secondly

  1580. seek the shalom

  1581. the wholeness

  1582. the blessing

  1583. the city of God

  1584. in our city

  1585. third thing is this

  1586. look at what

  1587. Jeremiah says

  1588. pray for the city

  1589. pray for the city

  1590. look at the way

  1591. that Jeremiah

  1592. phrases it here

  1593. he says

  1594. pray to the Lord

  1595. on behalf

  1596. of the city

  1597. now that language

  1598. is almost priestly

  1599. Jeremiah isn't just saying

  1600. pray for the city

  1601. and he's certainly

  1602. not saying

  1603. do what

  1604. Jonah did

  1605. remember Jonah

  1606. he goes to Nineveh

  1607. and he tells them

  1608. about God

  1609. and the gospel

  1610. and then he retreats

  1611. and he sits up

  1612. on a hill

1613. and he kind of says

  1614. okay God

  1615. let's see you nail

  1616. these guys

  1617. and Jonah

  1618. if he prays

  1619. for the city

  1620. he's praying

  1621. that God

  1622. will smite them

  1623. right

  1624. but what does

  1625. God say to Jeremiah

  1626. he says

  1627. well Jeremiah

  1628. says to the exiles

  1629. pray on behalf

  1630. of the city

  1631. it's almost like

  1632. God is saying

  1633. these guys

  1634. need my mercy

  1635. and my grace

  1636. but they don't know

1637. how to call out to me

  1638. but you do

  1639. so why don't you

  1640. pray for them

  1641. on their behalf

  1642. to me

  1643. for my grace

  1644. and my mercy

  1645. isn't that incredible

  1646. remember friends

  1647. the Babylonians

  1648. are Israel's

  1649. arch enemies

  1650. they've just burnt

  1651. down their city

  1652. they've pulled down

  1653. the walls

  1654. they destroyed

  1655. the temple

  1656. they've stolen

  1657. all the goods

  1658. they've desecrated

  1659. the holy place

  1660. and God

  1661. you want us

  1662. to do what

  1663. for them

  1664. you've got to be

  1665. kidding

  1666. right

  1667. friends

  1668. I know

  1669. that some

  1670. of us here

  1671. are

  1672. extremely

  1673. frustrated

  1674. even angry

  1675. maybe

  1676. at what

  1677. has happened

  1678. in our city

  1679. and the changes

  1680. that have taken

  1681. place

  1682. over the last

  1683. two years

  1684. and I must

  1685. confess

  1686. that as a

  1687. foreigner

  1688. I don't

  1689. I carry the city

  1690. so deeply

  1691. in my heart

  1692. but I know

  1693. that I probably

  1694. don't understand

  1695. and feel it

  1696. to the depth

  1697. of many of us

  1698. here

  1699. friends

  1700. God

  1701. asks us

  1702. to pray

  1703. on behalf

  1704. of our city

  1705. and I know

  1706. that's an incredibly

  1707. difficult thing

  1708. for some of us

  1709. maybe

  1710. but I want to

  1711. ask you this

  1712. do you think

  1713. that you could

  1714. possibly find

  1715. it in your

  1716. heart

  1717. to

  1718. trust the one

  1719. who

  1720. when he was

  1721. being nailed

  1722. to the cross

  1723. by his own

  1724. enemies

  1725. and his enemies

  1726. looked upon them

  1727. with a smirk

  1728. on their face

  1729. Jesus cried out

  1730. Father

  1731. forgive them

  1732. they know

  1733. not what

  1734. they do

  1735. and when

  1736. Jesus prayed

  1737. that prayer

  1738. he wasn't

  1739. saying

  1740. he wasn't

  1741. just praying

  1742. for a

  1743. blanket

  1744. amnesty

  1745. he wasn't

  1746. just saying

  1747. God

  1748. let's just

  1749. pretend

  1750. this whole

  1751. thing

  1752. hasn't

  1753. happened

  1754. he wasn't

  1755. just saying

  1756. let's just

  1757. sweep

  1758. their sins

  1759. under the rug

  1760. Jesus

  1761. was saying

  1762. God

  1763. these people

  1764. need your

  1765. grace

  1766. and your

  1767. mercy

  1768. but they

  1769. don't know

  1770. how to

  1771. call out

  1772. to you

  1773. and so

  1774. I'm

  1775. going to

  1776. call out

  1777. to you

  1778. that you

  1779. by your

  1780. grace

  1781. will reveal

  1782. yourself

  1783. to them

  1784. so that

  1785. they will

  1786. find you

  1787. and call

  1788. out to you

  1789. for the

  1790. grace

  1791. and the

  1792. mercy

  1793. that they

  1794. need

  1795. God

  1796. if you

  1797. leave them

  1798. to their

  1799. own devices

  1800. they're in

  1801. deep trouble

  1802. but they

  1803. need your

  1804. mercy

  1805. and they

  1806. don't know

  1807. how to

  1808. find you

  1809. so God

  1810. I ask

  1811. you

  1812. won't you

  1813. in your

  1814. mercy

  1815. won't you

  1816. pour out

  1817. your grace

  1818. in them

  1819. so that

  1820. they can

  1821. find you

  1822. friends

  1823. could we

  1824. not pray

  1825. the same

  1826. thing

  1827. for our

  1828. city

  1829. Father

  1830. forgive

  1831. them

  1832. they know

  1833. not what

  1834. you do

  1835. pray

  1836. to the

  1837. city

  1838. on behalf

  1839. of it

  1840. now

  1841. why does

  1842. God

  1843. ask us

  1844. to pray

  1845. I want

  1846. to give

  1847. us three

  1848. quick

  1849. reasons

  1850. one reason

  1851. is this

  1852. because

  1853. prayer is

  1854. powerful

  1855. you'll know

  1856. this very

  1857. famous

  1858. I've

  1859. mentioned

  1860. many times

  1861. I think

  1862. the

  1863. 16th

  1864. century

  1865. John

  1866. Knox

  1867. is a

  1868. Presbyterian

  1869. pastor

  1870. in Scotland

  1871. and he

  1872. used to

  1873. pray

  1874. in Queen

  1875. Mary

  1876. the Queen

  1877. of England

  1878. she says

  1879. I fear

  1880. the prayers

  1881. of John

  1882. Knox

  1883. more than

  1884. all the

  1885. armies

  1886. of England

  1887. right

  1888. because

  1889. prayer is

  1890. powerful

  1891. and it

  1892. changes

  1893. things

  1894. and prayer

  1895. actually

  1896. works

  1897. and when

  1898. we pray

  1899. for our

  1900. city

  1901. God

  1902. hears

  1903. our

  1904. prayers

  1905. and he

  1906. does

  1907. things

  1908. prayer

  1909. is

  1910. powerful

  1911. the second

  1912. reason

  1913. is this

  1914. you pray

  1915. for what

  1916. you love

  1917. and you

  1918. love

  1919. what you

  1920. pray

  1921. for

  1922. it's

  1923. very

  1924. hard

  1925. to pray

  1926. for

  1927. someone

  1928. and despise

  1929. them

  1930. it's

  1931. very

  1932. hard

  1933. to pray

  1934. for

  1935. someone

  1936. and then

  1937. use

  1938. and abuse

  1939. them

  1940. you

  1941. pray

  1942. for

  1943. what

  1944. you

  1945. love

  1946. but also

  1947. as you

  1948. pray

  1949. for

  1950. someone

  1951. your

  1952. heart

  1953. grows

  1954. for

  1955. them

  1956. as

  1957. God

  1958. asks

  1959. us

  1960. to

  1961. pray

  1962. for

  1963. the

  1964. city

  1965. it'll

  1966. grow

  1967. our

  1968. own

  1969. heart

  1970. for

  1971. the

  1972. city

  1973. and even

  1974. the areas

  1975. of pain

  1976. and the areas

  1977. that we

  1978. find hard

  1979. but here's a third

  1980. reason

1981. because not only is God

1982. asking us to love and serve the city of Hong Kong

1983. he's asking us to serve the city of Hong Kong in his way

1984. Francis Schaeffer used to speak about doing the Lord's work

  1985. in the Lord's way

1986. in other words what he's saying is we can go out in the city of Hong Kong

1987. we can set up NGOs and start schools and plant churches and set up charities

1988. but if we do it without deep meditation on the gospel if we do it without the dependence

1989. that comes from prayer you know what will happen we'll do it self-righteously

1990. we'll do it with self-sufficiency we'll do it in our own strength and you know what

1991. we'll probably cause more harm than good Steve Corbett wrote a book 15 years ago

1992. called when helping hurts and he spoke about how so many NGOs go into the cities and try

1993. and do things but in the end they cause more damage than good because they do it in their

1994. own self-righteousness and their own strength

1995. and Steve Corbett says that when we do that we try to bring the kingdom of heaven to our

  1996. world without the king

1997. friends we need to be people that pray

1998. in this great city of ours that has gone through so much in the last two years

1999. friends it's easier to complain than to pray

2000. it's easier to mock and scoff and laugh and ridicule

2001. and criticize than it is to labor and pray

2002. it's easier to point with our finger than to get on our knees

2003. but friends what our city really needs is not just more charity

2004. and it's not just Christians that are going out and doing random acts of kindness

2005. it's not just Christians trying to be good people

2006. what this great city needs is the kingdom of God

2007. it needs the presence and the power of the once crucified but now resurrected Christ who sits in glory

2008. friends what this city needs is the life transforming power of the sovereign majestic glorious God

2009. the God who gives life to the dead

2010. and how's that going to happen?

2011. it's going to happen as his church presences itself in the city

2012. seeks the peace and the shalom of the city

2013. but as we give ourselves to pray

2014. Jeremiah writes this letter to the people of God

2015. in the heart of the city of man

2016. and he says go and put down your roots

2017. seek the shalom and the welfare and the peace of the city

2018. go and be people of prayer

2019. may we do the same

  2020. let's pray together

  2021. oh heavenly father

  2022. we

2023. God we come before you this morning

2024. and we hear your word Lord

2025. that you call us to this great city

2026. not just for our own welfare

2027. not just for our own good

2028. you call us here God

2029. not just to use the city

  2030. but to bless it

2031. oh heavenly father we pray

2032. come and stir our hearts God

2033. to love and serve the great city of Hong Kong

  2034. the fragrant harbor Lord

2035. the pearl of the east

2036. we pray God that this city

2037. will be infused with the fragrance of heaven Lord

2038. Jesus come and have your way

2039. but first we pray come and have your way in our own hearts God

2040. God won't you come and shape us Lord

2041. won't you come and form us

2042. God won't you come and make us more like you

2043. God we so need you here

2044. Lord I pray for every one of us this morning

  2045. whether we're at home

2046. whether we're at the community center

2047. whether we're here at Ebenezer

2048. won't you start to call us God

2049. God we're convinced that you've called us here

2050. for such a time as this

2051. it's no coincidence that we're in Hong Kong

2052. for this time this season

2053. God won't you lead us

  2054. won't you help us

2055. won't you speak to us God

2056. help us to love our city

2057. and to serve our city

2058. help us God to bring

  2059. the kingdom of God

2060. to the city of man

2061. Christ come and have your way we pray

  2062. Amen
