  1. I invite you to turn back again to Isaiah chapter 43.

    Isaiah 43 chapter mention

  2. Several years ago, I was working at a church in Jackson, Mississippi.

  3. And on Wednesday nights, we would go through various series on different topics.

  4. And one time, we announced that the next series would be on the topic of anxiety and fear.

  5. And the first Wednesday that we began that series, the attendance to our Wednesday night services somewhere between doubled and tripled.

  6. And I don't know what single message to draw from that is.

  7. Maybe it's that our society is so desperate for a word about fear and anxiety that they would even go to church to find some resolution to it.

  8. It's about Israelites and the fear that they dealt with at one particular moment in their history, in one particular season.

  9. And what God does is not only tell them not to fear, but he gives them a tool to kill their fears with.

  10. And that's what I want to talk about tonight is I think in this passage, we see this principle that God doesn't just tell us not to fear.

  11. He teaches us how to kill our fears with a word.

  12. And the first thing I'll say about that is I'm making an assumption here, which is that our fears can be killed with a word.

  13. And what I don't want to do and what this passage doesn't do if you read it closely is this passage does not trivialize fear.

  14. It doesn't say that the problem with your fears is that you have silly fears that you just need to to ignore.

  15. And one way that we know this is because.

  16. Verse one, the first two words, did you see what they were?

  17. It says, but now.

  18. So this is words spoken in a context.

  19. And the context is the people of God are going through one of the worst seasons in all of the Old Testament.

  20. This may be the lowest point in the Old Testament where this is a nation.

  21. It's really two nations, Israel and Judah.

  22. In the past 200 years, Israel has been virtually wiped off the face of the earth.

  23. They were conquered by this vicious nation called the Assyrians.

  24. And then maybe 150 years later, Judah, another nation of God's people, is conquered by the Babylonians.

  25. And the place where the temple of God was, where people would go and worship God, that city was brought to its knees.

  26. It was destroyed.

  27. The temple of God, where people would go worship God, was destroyed.

  28. The last king of Judah was taken outside of the city walls.

  29. And he had to watch his own son be executed.

  30. And that was a way, from the perspective of the Babylonians, of completely destroying any hope that God's people had for a future.

  31. So these are people who are not fearing for no reason.

  32. They have reason to be unhappy with the situation that they're in.

  33. They're people who live in exile, who have no hope.

  34. If you look just before the passage that we read, in chapter 43, one way that Isaiah describes how hopeless their situation was, was in verse 22.

  35. He says,

  36. This is a people who have been plundered and looted.

  37. All of them are trapped in pits or hidden away in prisons.

  38. They have become plunder with no one to rescue them.

  39. They have been made loot with no one to say, send them back.

  40. Isaiah is saying, there's not even a person among these people who has the hope to say, send them back.

  41. And if you were to ask God's people in this season, if you were to ask them, what is your problem?

  42. What do you need fixed about your situation?

  43. What they would not say is, our problem is that we're afraid.

  44. Our problem is fear.

  45. What they would say is, our problem is the objects of our fear.

  46. We're afraid because there are things in our world to be afraid of.

  47. We are a conquered people.

  48. We are living in exile.

  49. We have no hope for a future.

  50. We have good reason to be afraid.

  51. And we can all in our lives point to fears that we have that, on our best moments, we would say are not legitimate.

  52. When a child, one of my children, come to me in the middle of the night and they say, I'm scared of the monsters.

  53. One way that I can handle that, one way that I do handle it, is I convince them how silly that fear is.

  54. I convince them that there are no such thing as monsters.

  55. And to even fear them would be a foolish thing to do.

  56. But then there are fears that adults can have.

  57. I'm worried about what happens if I'm late to that meeting tomorrow.

  58. And if you think about it, and if you really think about it, you might convince yourself, well, actually, if I'm late tomorrow, nothing's going to happen.

  59. And I can remember how many times my dad used to tell me, he used to reassure me by giving me this thought experiment.

  60. He would say, Hunter, what's the worst thing that could happen?

  61. You know, this thing that you keep talking about, how afraid you are, being late to school tomorrow, what's the worst thing that could come of it?

  62. And if I really thought about it, not much could happen.

  63. But there are some fears in all of our lives that give us good reason to be afraid.

  64. It could be fears that we have about future suffering, perhaps that we know are coming.

  65. It could be suffering that we're in the midst of right now.

  66. It could be mistakes that we know that we've made in the past.

  67. And we fear how those mistakes will play themselves out in the future.

  68. We fear that we've made, we've messed up in such a way that we cannot fix our situation.

  69. All human beings in their best moments have times where we realize the gravity of death.

  70. And that can give us a sense of fear.

  71. And if you think about it, the fear that the Israelites have is a combination of all those things.

  72. Because they're worried about death.

  73. They're worried about suffering.

  74. And what makes it even more painful is they know that the situation that they're in is their own making.

  75. So if you look at the very last verse before the passage that we just read in chapter 43, God has this really terrible message for them.

  76. Verse 24.

  77. Verse 24 says,

  78. Who handed Jacob over to become loot and Israel to the plunderers?

  79. Who did this awful thing to the Israelites?

  80. Was it not the Lord against whom we have sinned?

  81. For they would not follow his ways.

  82. They did not obey his law.

  83. So he, God, poured on them his burning anger, the violence of war.

  84. It enveloped them in flames, yet they did not understand.

  85. It consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.

  86. One of the most terrible anxieties that a person can probably go through is to know that part of the reason that you're suffering is something that you had to do with.

  87. It was actually a mistake that you made.

  88. So these people have reason to fear, and they're facing the worst kind of fear a person could face.

  89. And in a fear like that, the answer can't be merely something like breathing exercises or going for a walk.

  90. Those things can have short-term help.

  91. But the kind of fear Israel is working with, dealing with, is something that needs something stronger than just forgetting about it.

  92. And the assumption of my premise tonight is that what a fear like this needs, what our deepest fears in life needs, is a word.

  93. Something that we can speak to those fears, that can actually, we can face those fears and how grave they actually are.

  94. But we can put those fears to death.

  95. And if you notice, when you read Isaiah, and when you read all of Scripture, actually,

  96. I spent time trying to actually figure out if this is true, and it is true.

  97. Every single time in Scripture that God tells His people, do not fear, He never just says, do not fear.

  98. He always gives them a reason not to fear.

  99. And even if you just look in the book of Isaiah, God tells His people, or Isaiah, God through Isaiah tells His people,

  100. 14 times, either do not fear or do not be afraid.

  101. And every single time, He attaches to it a reason not to fear.

  102. And what that must mean is, the only way for us to conquer our deepest fears is not just by telling ourselves not to fear.

  103. But it's by finding a word that we can bring to our fears that can quiet them.

  104. And I think this is important to hear, because so often we can carry around a fact like this,

  105. a fact that we know that Christians should not fear.

  106. And you can walk in a place like this, and you can say,

  107. I know that because I'm a Christian, I'm not supposed to fear.

  108. But if that's the only thing that we remember,

  109. what we end up doing is, we feel guilty for the fear that we have,

  110. and we never actually think about the resolution that the Gospel offers to it.

  111. So perhaps the worst thing that we can do is only remember that Christians are called not to fear.

  112. Christians are called not to fear, and to not fear because we have a reason not to fear.

  113. God teaches us to kill our fears with a word.

  114. And the word is, redemption.

  115. And you see this in verse 2.

  116. Excuse me, at the end of verse 1.

  117. This is what God tells his people.

  118. At a given point in time, in a certain circumstance.

  119. He says, do not fear, for I have redeemed you.

  120. God says, take that word.

  121. He says, do not fear, I have redeemed you.

  122. And he says, take that word, I have redeemed you.

  123. And Mr. Sladek here could tell you,

  124. I have redeemed you in Hebrew is just one word.

  125. Take that word, I have redeemed you.

  126. And use that as the tool, as the means that I have given you to put to death the fears that you have about your situation, the situation that you're in.

  127. Use this single fact that God has redeemed you to kill your fears.

  128. And there's a lot of reasons why that's actually really hard to do.

  129. One of the reasons is, if you don't actually think about what that word redeemed is, that tool that God has given you becomes blunted.

  130. And part of the problem is that in our society today, we use the word redeemed in a lot of different contexts.

  131. We love movies that are about redemption.

  132. Usually, when we talk about movies that are about redemption, it's usually the story of a man or a woman who has made mistakes in their past.

  133. But somewhere along the lines in their life, they figure out how to do better in life.

  134. And what we say is that it's a story of redemption.

  135. They've figured out how to redeem their past.

  136. Or, you know, you're at a job.

  137. It can be much more simple than that.

  138. You're at a job.

  139. You have a bad day.

  140. And the next day, you do better.

  141. And the boss comes in and says, good job, son.

  142. You redeemed yourself.

  143. What all those kinds of redemption have in common is, it assumes that the bad things in your life are things that you can fix.

  144. And what the Bible is saying, and what the Israelites would have said about their situation is,

  145. there are some situations that you can find yourself in.

  146. There are some realities about this world that you can accept.

  147. And if you accept them, you realize you cannot redeem yourself.

  148. You know, for the most obvious example being death.

  149. No matter how much you want to avoid death, you cannot, of your own will, avoid that.

  150. There's no amount of work you can put into it.

  151. Even if you try to be, even if you try it to help, be the healthiest person you can, you cannot redeem yourself from death.

  152. When God says, I have redeemed you, when he says it in the Old Testament, when he says it here in verse 1,

  153. it has a specific meaning.

  154. And you have to know that meaning before you can realize why that would even matter,

  155. why that would be an encouragement to someone.

  156. Redemption in the Old Testament, generally speaking, has this idea that a person can be bought back.

  157. So, for instance, in Leviticus, one of the laws gives an example of a man who becomes impoverished.

  158. And he becomes so impoverished, the way that he tries to sustain himself is he sells his own life into slavery.

  159. And the Jewish laws were such that one of his family members can come along,

  160. and he can pay a price to set his family member free.

  161. It's called the redemption price.

  162. And he's called the redeemer, the one that redeems.

  163. And the very same idea is being pointed to here in this passage.

  164. And you know it because when you look at verses 3 and 4, this is what God says.

  165. He says, excuse me, in verse 3.

  166. He says, I have redeemed you.

  167. And in verse 3 he says,

  168. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

  169. And then this is how he explains himself.

  170. He says, I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.

  171. And then halfway down the next verse he says,

  172. I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.

  173. So what God is doing is he's saying,

  174. the way that I am going to tell you that you don't need to fear

  175. is by telling you what's about to happen to you,

  176. which is that I have redeemed you.

  177. And what God is saying is, he's saying,

  178. you are so precious to me.

  179. You, my children, are so precious to me

  180. that I am willing to give Egypt and Cush and Seba

  181. in exchange for your life

  182. to free you from the situation that you have found yourselves in.

  183. And there's a historical truth to this

  184. because in 539 B.C.,

  185. the Persians come into power.

  186. And one of the first things that the Persians do

  187. is they allow all the Israelites,

  188. all the people of Judah,

  189. to go back home and to rebuild their temple

  190. and to worship God again.

  191. That's the moment where they find redemption.

  192. And around the same period in history,

  193. the Persians also conquer Cush and Seba in Egypt,

  194. which is, these places are another way of talking about

  195. basically all of known Africa in the time period.

  196. So the Persians come into power

  197. and they set the Israelites free

  198. and they also conquer modern Africa,

  199. excuse me, what was known of Africa at the time.

  200. And one of the themes in the book of Isaiah

  201. that comes up over and over again in lots of different ways

  202. is God keeps trying to show his people

  203. that the circumstances that they find themselves in

  204. in this world are not just by chance

  205. and they can't be explained merely by military power

  206. or by geopolitical power.

  207. Cyrus, who helped the Persians rise to power,

  208. and if you go read Isaiah chapter 45,

    Isaiah 45 chapter mention

  209. one of the things that God says is,

  210. he's not just there by chance.

  211. He is my servant and he's doing what I want for you,

  212. to save you, to redeem you.

  213. And do you see how this kills fear?

  214. How this one word, I have redeemed you,

  215. kills fear for the Israelites?

  216. Because it helps them see that the God of the universe

  217. has come down and he has guaranteed,

  218. you know, in their own language through this idea of redemption.

  219. He says, you are so precious to me that I have purchased you back

  220. and I've given you some of the most rich,

  221. I've given some of the most rich nations in the world

  222. in exchange for you.

  223. That's how precious you are to me.

  224. And this is the kind of idea that if you actually let it sit inside your mind,

  225. if you're an Israelite in 550 BC,

  226. you allow this to sit inside your mind

  227. and you follow the idea to its natural conclusion,

  228. which this passage does.

  229. Why would God redeem a people?

  230. Why would anyone ever redeem someone?

  231. And, you know, if you're a Hebrew

  232. and you redeem your brother from slavery,

  233. maybe you do it out of a sense of obligation.

  234. Maybe you do it because you're wealthy

  235. and if you didn't redeem your brother,

  236. you'd be frowned on in your society.

  237. But that's not the reason that God gives

  238. for why he redeemed his people.

  239. What does he say?

  240. He says,

  241. I redeemed, you are,

  242. verse four,

  243. you are precious and honored in my sight

  244. and because I love you.

  245. That's why I redeemed you.

  246. And what I love about this

  247. is this idea of God's love

  248. and this idea of redemption,

  249. they interpret one another.

  250. So you could say,

  251. what does it mean that God redeemed us?

  252. Why does he redeem us?

  253. It's because he loves us.

  254. And then if you ever were to doubt God's love

  255. if you were an Israelite,

  256. you would say,

  257. well, how do I know that God loves me?

  258. Well, you look back at the redemption.

  259. He was willing to give Seba in Africa,

  260. all these places he said,

  261. I was more precious than these nations.

  262. And what an Israelite was called to do

  263. is to look at their fears in that present moment

  264. and put those fears to death,

  265. not because those fears weren't legitimate,

  266. but because God had offered them a hope

  267. that was greater than their fears.

  268. Now, it can be a cheap trick

  269. for a minister preaching through the Old Testament

  270. to look at a word like redemption

  271. and say,

  272. you see, we're all redeemed.

  273. And part of the cheapness of that trick

  274. is that this is talking about

  275. a specific moment in history.

  276. But there's two reasons

  277. why this has something to say to us.

  278. And one of them is passages like this

  279. that talk about a God

  280. who would redeem Israel.

  281. They're telling us about who God is.

  282. God never changes.

  283. And the God of 2,500 years ago

  284. is the same God today

  285. so that we can look at a passage like Isaiah 43

  286. and we can say,

  287. what I know about my God

  288. is that it is in his character

  289. to look at a situation,

  290. to look at a people

  291. who have gone so far away from him

  292. and as far away as they can get,

  293. he can still redeem them

  294. and he can still bring them back to himself.

  295. And he can still look at someone

  296. who goes as far away as they can,

  297. a prodigal son and a prodigal nation,

  298. and God can still say,

  299. they are precious in my eyes

  300. and I will do whatever it takes

  301. to bring them back to myself.

  302. That's one reason why we can look at a passage like this.

  303. But another one is,

  304. moments like this

  305. in the history of God's people

  306. prepared God's people

  307. to see Jesus.

  308. And this is when my imagination

  309. begins to run wild

  310. and I admit that I'm speculating here.

  311. But I imagine those,

  312. you know,

  313. I imagine the disciples

  314. after Jesus had ascended into heaven

  315. and they're sitting around a campfire at nighttime.

  316. They're having dinner together.

  317. And they're trying to think,

  318. how can we communicate

  319. what Jesus has done for us

  320. to our Jewish brothers and sisters?

  321. How can we explain to them

  322. that Jesus Christ has died for their sins?

  323. And you imagine them going,

  324. thinking in their minds,

  325. going Genesis,

  326. Exodus,

  327. Leviticus,

  328. Numbers,

  329. Deuteronomy,

  330. going through all of the Old Testament

  331. and saying,

  332. how does this,

  333. how was this all along

  334. preparing us to see who Jesus was?

  335. And then they get to a passage like

  336. Isaiah 43.

  337. And this had to have been

  338. one of the most obvious passages for them

  339. because

  340. the story of God's people

  341. in this moment in time

  342. is in so many ways

  343. the story of the gospel.

  344. It's a preview of the gospel

  345. because in it

  346. you have a people

  347. who have gone

  348. as far as they can from God,

  349. who have no hope

  350. and who are looking around in fear.

  351. And then

  352. Jesus,

  353. excuse me,

  354. and then God steps in.

  355. Jesus steps in

  356. and he offers

  357. a way out.

  358. He offers them a redemption.

  359. It's even the same word.

  360. The New Testament

  361. over and over again

  362. describes what Jesus did

  363. as redemption.

  364. Jesus goes to the cross

  365. and he redeems his people

  366. from their sins.

  367. Just like God

  368. redeemed

  369. the Israelites

  370. from the consequences

  371. of what they had to go through.

  372. It's like

  373. the whole story

  374. of Jesus Christ

  375. and his redemption

  376. is everything that happens

  377. in Isaiah 43

  378. but greater.

  379. fear.

  380. And because of that

  381. we can look at a passage

  382. like this

  383. and we can say

  384. when God tells us

  385. not to fear

  386. he even gives us

  387. a word

  388. to apply to our fears

  389. to kill them.

  390. And it's the same word

  391. it's redemption.

  392. And what we have to realize

  393. is that

  394. when God gives us

  395. a word

  396. to kill our fears

  397. he hasn't just

  398. changed our psychology.

  399. He hasn't just said

  400. you need to think

  401. more positively.

  402. What he has done

  403. is he's changed

  404. our objective situation.

  405. He's saying

  406. I'm telling you

  407. not to fear

  408. not just because

  409. I want you to be

  410. more positive

  411. but because

  412. your objective situation

  413. has changed.

  414. you were hopeless.

  415. You were living

  416. in your sins

  417. and you had no hope

  418. and the fears

  419. the fears that you

  420. dealt with in life

  421. the same fears

  422. that everyone deals

  423. with in life

  424. about death

  425. and what comes after

  426. these were things

  427. that you had no answer to

  428. and so you were right

  429. to fear.

  430. And then God says

  431. I have given you

  432. an answer

  433. which is that

  434. you have been redeemed

  435. and that you are

  436. precious to me

  437. in your sight

  438. in my sight.

  439. So God teaches us

  440. to kill our fears

  441. with a word

  442. and that word

  443. is redemption

  444. but

  445. in some ways

  446. that's the easy part

  447. isn't it?

  448. Just recognizing

  449. what is true

  450. especially if you're

  451. already a Christian

  452. it's easy to say

  453. I know that God

  454. calls me not to fear

  455. because he has redeemed me

  456. but then the next challenge

  457. is and the challenge

  458. of every day

  459. of our lives

  460. is how do you

  461. take that truth?

  462. How do you take

  463. that one word

  464. that God gives us

  465. and make it a habit?

  466. Make it a habit

  467. of applying the gospel

  468. applying redemption

  469. to our lives

  470. so that every day

  471. we're putting our fears

  472. to death.

  473. Because isn't it true

  474. that you can worship you

  475. and you can say

  476. I know God calls me

  477. not to fear

  478. I know he's redeemed me

  479. and yet even as you're

  480. sitting in this pew

  481. you could be thinking

  482. about what tomorrow

  483. might bring

  484. that stressful meeting

  485. that you know

  486. you're going to have

  487. all kinds of anxieties

  488. things that keep us

  489. awake at night

  490. things that we can't sleep

  491. and we don't know

  492. how to get over it

  493. and what we have to do

  494. is we have to become

  495. midnight theologians

  496. people who

  497. when we wake up

  498. in the middle of the night

  499. and we find that

  500. we have anxieties

  501. that we don't know

  502. how to deal with

  503. we have to

  504. begin the process

  505. of saying

  506. if I really am

  507. redeemed

  508. as the gospel

  509. tells me that I am

  510. what does

  511. what does my

  512. redemption have

  513. to say to this fear

  514. because my conviction

  515. is

  516. and I hope this is

  517. your conviction

  518. as well

  519. that there is no

  520. fear

  521. in our lives

  522. there's literally

  523. no fear

  524. in our lives

  525. that we can face

  526. that redemption

  527. doesn't touch

  528. if we're in Christ

  529. and

  530. part of the challenge

  531. is realizing

  532. sometimes I think

  533. we fear

  534. and we don't even

  535. stop to think

  536. that the gospel

  537. might have something

  538. to say to this fear

  539. and part of our challenge

  540. is to think of all

  541. the fears that we face

  542. and say

  543. what does the gospel

  544. have to say to this

  545. just to give one

  546. example

  547. of a new challenge

  548. that part of our

  549. society is facing

  550. there's a

  551. New York

  552. University psychologist

  553. named Jonathan Haidt

  554. and he

  555. he studies a lot

  556. of teenage development

  557. and he wrote

  558. in an American

  559. journal called

  560. The Atlantic

  561. last year

  562. an article

  563. that he called

  564. The Dangerous

  565. Experiment

  566. The Dangerous

  567. Experiment

  568. on Teen Girls

  569. The Dangerous

  570. Experiment

  571. on Teen Girls

  572. and what his

  573. article was about

  574. was

  575. as a psychologist

  576. he's noticed

  577. that

  578. when you study

  579. teen girls

  580. and their experiences

  581. of depression

  582. over the past

  583. 15 years

  584. teenage girls

  585. are reporting

  586. about a 66%

  587. increase

  588. in

  589. self-identified

  590. depression

  591. sorry let me put

  592. that a little bit

  593. more clearly

  594. if you compare

  595. a teenage girl

  596. 15 years ago

  597. to a teenage girl

  598. in 2021

  599. there's 66%

  600. more likely

  601. in 2021

  602. to report

  603. having had

  604. a depressive

  605. episode

  606. in the past

  607. month

  608. and Haidt's

  609. argument

  610. this psychologist

  611. is that

  612. the only reason

  613. that we can give

  614. to explain this

  615. and the only reason

  616. we can give to explain

  617. why this is happening

  618. not just in America

  619. but in UK

  620. and in all western

  621. countries

  622. is the rise of

  623. social media

  624. and so his argument

  625. is

  626. our young women

  627. are facing

  628. depression

  629. at a scale

  630. they've never faced

  631. before

  632. because they're

  633. using social media

  634. more than they

  635. ever have before

  636. and you know

  637. maybe part of the

  638. solution is to think

  639. about how much

  640. we actually use

  641. social media

  642. but there is

  643. there is an issue

  644. there of something

  645. that's happening

  646. to the teenage girls

  647. among us

  648. our daughters

  649. and our granddaughters

  650. and the people

  651. that we know

  652. and love

  653. where because

  654. they're using

  655. social media

  656. more and more

  657. they're having

  658. their sense of

  659. identity challenged

  660. every single day

  661. where they're

  662. looking at pictures

  663. of beautiful people

  664. online

  665. beautiful peers

  666. who are using

  667. technology to make

  668. themselves look

  669. more beautiful

  670. and then they look

  671. at themselves

  672. and they might say

  673. I am nowhere near

  674. as pretty as that

  675. I am worthless

  676. and that kind of fear

  677. when it begins to

  678. settle into a young

  679. mind

  680. that I am

  681. I am not beautiful

  682. I am not

  683. I'm not precious

  684. that fear can expand

  685. into a person's life

  686. I am not lovable

  687. and you can begin

  688. to look to answers

  689. for that fear

  690. in all sorts

  691. of places

  692. and my question

  693. tonight is

  694. is it not possible

  695. that even in

  696. something like that

  697. that has come around

  698. so recently

  699. can we not look

  700. at a problem

  701. like that

  702. and say

  703. even there

  704. the gospel

  705. has something

  706. to say

  707. to that fear

  708. that we can teach

  709. our young women

  710. that the word

  711. redemption

  712. says something

  713. about who they are

  714. and about their identity

  715. and hope

  716. maybe

  717. maybe if we can

  718. if we can tell them

  719. in a thousand different ways

  720. that God looks at them

  721. and he says

  722. that they are precious

  723. so precious

  724. that he has

  725. died for them

  726. that he has sent his son

  727. to die for them

  728. on the cross

  729. maybe when they look

  730. at those images

  731. on the internet

  732. they're not thrown

  733. so off kilter

  734. because they have

  735. this anchor

  736. in their soul

  737. that says

  738. I need not fear

  739. whether I am

  740. beautiful or not

  741. because my God

  742. has told me

  743. that I'm precious

  744. now

  745. that's not my fear

  746. that's

  747. that's a fear

  748. of someone else

  749. but all of us

  750. have the responsibility

  751. to look into our lives

  752. and say

  753. what am I fearing

  754. that I haven't even

  755. put a name on

  756. and say

  757. what does the gospel

  758. have to say to this

  759. what does the fact

  760. that God has redeemed me

  761. have to say to this

  762. and one of

  763. one of the takeaways

  764. from an example

  765. like I just gave

  766. where you talk about

  767. a teenage girl

  768. and the hope that

  769. you know

  770. we can teach

  771. our daughters

  772. and teach our friends

  773. that these are truths

  774. is that

  775. the redemption

  776. that's talked about

  777. in a passage

  778. like Isaiah 43

  779. is not

  780. merely individualistic

  781. God talks

  782. to the nation

  783. of Israel

  784. and he talks

  785. to the nation

  786. of Jacob

  787. and yes

  788. he talks about

  789. bringing sons

  790. and daughters

  791. individually

  792. from the far

  793. sides of the world

  794. back together

  795. but this is a redemption

  796. that if we really

  797. understand it

  798. we understand

  799. it's a redemption

  800. that we all share

  801. now the sins

  802. that I have been

  803. redeemed from

  804. and the sins

  805. that you have been

  806. redeemed from

  807. may not be the same

  808. but we can look

  809. at each other

  810. and say

  811. we were in the same

  812. spot

  813. and we needed

  814. we needed hope

  815. and we needed

  816. something to kill

  817. our fears

  818. and the same God

  819. died for both of us

  820. and killed our fears

  821. and that gives us

  822. a reason to celebrate

  823. together

  824. I'll give one more

  825. caveat with this

  826. and then

  827. I'll close

  828. with a

  829. with a brief story

  830. the caveat

  831. is this

  832. anytime we talk

  833. about things

  834. like fear

  835. grief

  836. it can be easy

  837. to hear

  838. that God

  839. tells us

  840. not to fear

  841. and that we should

  842. just be happy

  843. all the time

  844. and that we should

  845. never do something

  846. like grieve

  847. that we are not

  848. people who should

  849. ever admit

  850. to suffering

  851. or to sorrow

  852. but if you were

  853. to

  854. if you think

  855. about the Israelites

  856. the day they

  857. received this message

  858. or the day they

  859. realized this message

  860. was about them

  861. what was the difference

  862. between the day

  863. before they heard

  864. this message

  865. and the day

  866. after they heard

  867. this message

  868. the difference

  869. wasn't

  870. their physical

  871. situation

  872. they were still

  873. as oppressed

  874. the day before

  875. they heard this prophecy

  876. as the day after

  877. they heard this prophecy

  878. but the difference

  879. was

  880. they finally knew

  881. there was a hope

  882. and what God

  883. does sometimes

  884. is he comes to us

  885. in the moments

  886. when we are

  887. the most grieved

  888. and when we have

  889. the most reason

  890. to objectively

  891. have fears

  892. and he doesn't say

  893. just ignore

  894. what's going on

  895. around you

  896. what he does

  897. is he says

  898. as grave

  899. as you realize

  900. that these fears

  901. are

  902. know that even here

  903. I have provided

  904. an answer

  905. and I haven't

  906. been in Becli

  907. very often

  908. but just before

  909. I came into

  910. the service

  911. I realized

  912. I read all

  913. those plaques

  914. that are just

  915. by the entrance

  916. and the one

  917. right in the corner

  918. to I think it was

  919. John Simm

  920. I believe

  921. talked about

  922. how he died

  923. on the Sabbath

  924. and at the bottom

  925. one of the passages

  926. that it quotes

  927. about his death

  928. is

  929. well now I've

  930. just challenged

  931. myself

  932. I've embarrassed

  933. myself

  934. it's either

  935. I think it's

  936. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  937. chapter 4

  938. either 1 or 2

  939. Thessalonians

  940. chapter 4

  941. but it's the passage

  942. where

  943. Paul says

  944. do not grieve

  945. as

  946. we as Christians

  947. do not grieve

  948. as those who are

  949. without hope

  950. and I don't think

  951. he was saying

  952. don't grieve

  953. but he's saying

  954. our grief

  955. looks different

  956. our grief

  957. is the kind of grief

  958. that even though

  959. it is sad

  960. and it recognizes

  961. that this world

  962. is

  963. immensely

  964. not as it should be

  965. we have hope

  966. and we have something

  967. to look forward to

  968. and that allows us

  969. to live

  970. when we are in the pit

  971. and I'll finish

  972. with a story

  973. which may seem

  974. trivial to you

  975. but I've thought

  976. about a lot

  977. over the years

  978. I had a friend

  979. come visit me

  980. once when I was

  981. in Washington D.C.

  982. and I lived

  983. in a small

  984. one bedroom flat

  985. where the kitchen

  986. was right next

  987. to the shower

  988. and so

  989. I was cooking breakfast

  990. and my friend

  991. was in the shower

  992. right next to me

  993. in a manner of speaking

  994. and I could hear him

  995. talking to himself

  996. and he began

  997. talking to himself

  998. very loudly

  999. and when he came

  1000. out of the shower

  1001. I said

  1002. just so you know

  1003. I heard you

  1004. talking to yourself

  1005. in the shower

  1006. but I couldn't

1007. make out what he was saying

  1008. so I asked

  1009. what he was doing

  1010. because

1011. if you're going to talk

  1012. at least sing

  1013. right

  1014. and he said

  1015. he said

  1016. every morning

  1017. when I wake up

  1018. and I take a shower

  1019. I repeat

  1020. the whole gospel

  1021. to myself

  1022. so that every morning

  1023. I hear the gospel

  1024. and that may seem

  1025. trivial to you

1026. but let me tell you

1027. if that's what it takes

  1028. that's what it takes

1029. all of us need to

  1030. be reminded

  1031. that the fears

  1032. that we experience

  1033. in this life

  1034. have an answer

  1035. and we need to

  1036. tell ourselves

  1037. the gospel

1038. as often as we can

  1039. let's pray

  1040. heavenly father

  1041. we praise you

  1042. that you have not

  1043. left us

  1044. without hope

  1045. and you've not

  1046. just told us

  1047. to change our minds

  1048. but you've actually

  1049. changed our

  1050. objective situation

  1051. you have redeemed us

  1052. from the pit

  1053. and even when we

  1054. walk through darkness

  1055. we know that you're

  1056. with us

  1057. and we pray

  1058. that as we look

  1059. to tomorrow

  1060. and the fears

  1061. that are trivial

  1062. and the fears

  1063. that are real

  1064. and that hurt us

  1065. would you give us

  1066. hope

  1067. in your gospel

  1068. not in ourselves

  1069. but in what you

  1070. can do for us

  1071. and what you have

  1072. done for us

  1073. in Jesus Christ

  1074. and we ask this

  1075. in his name

  1076. amen

1077. if you would join me

  1078. our final hymn

  1079. this evening

  1080. is

  1081. there is a redeemer

  1082. let's stand

  1083. this evening

  1084. please

  1085. hear me

  1086. this evening

  1087. oh

  1088. you

  1089. have a hard

  1090. to do

  1091. with calling

  1092. you

  1093. I saw

  1094. I
