  1. And again, if you have your Bibles open, we will be in that section of 1 Peter chapter 2 that Steve read for us.

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  2. We are beginning a new series called Gospel Truths and Gospel Culture.

  3. And we're beginning with a theme of substitution.

  4. To borrow that line from Man of Sorrows,

  5. In my place condemned he, the Lord Jesus, stood.

  6. And so why this series on Gospel Truth and Gospel Culture?

  7. Well, let me begin by thinking about the largest diamond ever discovered in the world.

  8. Perhaps you know its name. It's the Cullinan diamond.

  9. It weighed in at some 3,106 carats.

  10. Discovered in a mine in South Africa in 1905.

  11. Since 1907 has been part of the Crown Jewels.

  12. If you ever want to see it, you can go to the Tower of London.

  13. If you ever want to touch it, you will not be allowed to.

  14. It's far too precious.

  15. But the wonderful thing about diamonds, so I'm told.

  16. I've never experienced this.

  17. But as you turn the diamond, you see its many facets.

  18. You see it refracting the light.

  19. However you turn it, you're going to see fresh glimpses of beauty.

  20. And so with that in our minds,

  21. let's think about the Gospel.

  22. Why are we doing a series on the Gospel

  23. and the culture that the Gospel produces?

  24. Because it's always good for us as the people of God

  25. to slow down and examine

  26. the good news at the heart of our faith,

  27. the person at the heart of our faith,

  28. the Lord Jesus,

  29. to let his beauty shine in our lives.

  30. There are, for a church in every age and generation,

  31. at least two dangers in this regard.

  32. One, we can assume the Gospel,

  33. in which case we will probably very quickly lose the Gospel.

  34. We can use Gospel speak without necessarily knowing

  35. what it is that we're talking about.

  36. So it's good for us to slow down

  37. so that we together understand

  38. the wonderful reality

  39. that is the good news of what God has done for us in Jesus.

  40. But the other danger for us

  41. is that there can be a disconnection

  42. between the truth that we believe

  43. and the lives that we live.

  44. There can be a great difference

  45. between what we affirm

  46. statements of faith

  47. with the way that we share our lives together.

  48. And so I want us to take time

  49. for the next few months

  50. to think about the Gospel

  51. and to see how that should shape

  52. our culture, our life,

  53. our family life together as a church.

  54. I didn't necessarily plan this,

  55. but during my sabbatical,

  56. that was definitely where God led me.

  57. Most of my thinking was about

  58. how should the people of God

  59. and our life together look different

  60. because we believe Jesus is Lord.

  61. So our aim every time that we meet

  62. is that as Christians,

  63. we would delight again and again

  64. in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus.

  65. And for those of us who are here

  66. who are not Christians,

  67. that you would be drawn to the Lord Jesus

  68. as you come to discover

  69. what God in Jesus has done.

  70. and that these Gospel truths

  71. would more and more shape

  72. how we share life together.

  73. That there would be a Gospel culture

  74. in our church.

  75. And for us to do that,

  76. let's go right to the heart of the Gospel.

  77. Let's think together about substitution.

  78. And our approach today

  79. is going to see this great theme

  80. largely through the eyes of Peter,

  81. the disciple.

  82. So Peter wrote this letter,

  83. but it was also Peter

  84. who provided the content

  85. for Mark's Gospel.

  86. So we'll dip into Mark's Gospel

  87. a little bit

  88. to get a sense of how Peter

  89. understands substitution.

  90. Our little section, I think,

  91. gave us an insight

  92. into why Peter is writing his letter.

  93. New followers of Jesus

  94. are now facing pressure from Rome.

  95. They're facing opposition.

  96. And so what Peter does time and again

  97. is he brings to them,

  98. here is what God has done for you in Jesus.

  99. Here is the good news

  100. that has saved you

  101. so that,

  102. in the case of this little section

  103. we just read,

  104. that as those believers

  105. are united to Christ by faith,

  106. they would then follow his example

  107. and be ready to suffer

  108. for the sake of the Lord God.

  109. So we're going to be in this section,

  110. 18 to 25,

  111. and I hope it will help us

  112. answer three questions.

  113. Three simple questions.

  114. One, what is substitution?

  115. Two, who is the substitute?

  116. And three, why do we call substitution

  117. good news?

  118. So first, what is substitution?

  119. And I think at this stage

  120. it would be helpful to clarify

  121. because I imagine most of us

  122. if we hear the word substitute,

  123. perhaps we will think

  124. in terms of sport.

  125. One player goes off,

  126. another player comes on.

  127. Or we might think of the classroom.

  128. A teacher is unavailable

  129. and so there is a substitute

  130. who is brought in.

  131. Or maybe you're just thinking

  132. of your online supermarket shop.

  133. Your product was not available

  134. so a substitute product

  135. is provided.

  136. Now that gets to part of the image

  137. but not the whole image.

  138. It's not simply one person

  139. taking the place of another.

  140. In the Bible,

  141. substitution is the idea

  142. of one person taking the place

  143. of another,

  144. bearing their pain

  145. and saving the other

  146. from that pain.

  147. So perhaps in modern day

  148. it might be a better image

  149. for us to think about

  150. a bodyguard

  151. jumping in front of a politician

  152. or a president

  153. to protect them from a bullet.

  154. Perhaps a parent

  155. giving their life

  156. to save a child

  157. from drowning.

  158. Those noble acts

  159. of loving self,

  160. giving sacrifice

  161. that we hear about.

  162. Well the idea in Peter's mind

  163. as he thinks about substitution

  164. is drawn from

  165. the Old Testament.

  166. And that system of sacrifices

  167. given by God

  168. always intended

  169. to point to something greater.

  170. To point to the reality

  171. that in God's perfect timing

  172. he would send

  173. his own son Jesus

  174. to be our substitute

  175. to die as a sacrifice

  176. so that you and I

  177. by trusting in him

  178. might know salvation.

  179. So we can see this

  180. if you look at your Bibles

  181. in for example

  182. verse 24

  183. Peter speaks of Jesus

  184. and he says

  185. he himself

  186. bore our sins

  187. in his body.

  188. A sacrifice language.

  189. We can also see

  190. it in the quotations

  191. from Isaiah 53.

  192. He committed no sin

  193. and no deceit

  194. was found in his mouth

  195. by his wounds

  196. you have been healed.

  197. We can also see it

  198. in 1 Peter chapter 1

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  199. and verse 18.

  200. For you know

  201. it was not with

  202. perishable things

  203. such as silver or gold

  204. that you were redeemed

  205. but with the precious

  206. blood of Christ.

  207. When Peter thinks

  208. about Jesus

  209. the substitute

  210. he thinks of that

  211. sacrificial work

  212. fulfilled by Jesus.

  213. So

  214. let's think about that

  215. together.

  216. So every time

  217. an Old Testament

  218. worshipper

  219. went to the temple

  220. with a guilt offering

  221. or a sin offering

  222. a few things would happen.

  223. They would bring

  224. an animal

  225. with them

  226. and that animal

  227. would then

  228. they would then

  229. lay their hand

  230. on the heads

  231. of the animal

  232. to say

  233. my guilt

  234. and my sin

  235. is now being transferred

  236. and then that animal

  237. would be killed

  238. and the blood

  239. would then be sprinkled.

  240. And so the message

  241. in the temple

  242. was clear.

  243. That substitute

  244. dies for my sin

  245. their blood

  246. covers my guilt

  247. so I can be

  248. in the presence

  249. of a holy God.

  250. Perhaps we can go

  251. since we're going

  252. in the book of Exodus

  253. in the evenings

  254. we can think about

  255. the Passover event

  256. when God's people

  257. Israel were slaves

  258. in Egypt

  259. and God announced

  260. that his judgment

  261. was going to pass

  262. right through

  263. the nation

  264. of Egypt.

  265. But in his mercy

  266. he said to his people

  267. there is a way

  268. for this judgment

  269. to pass over you

  270. and what was that way?

  271. They had to take

  272. a spotless animal

  273. and they had to kill it

  274. and they had to

  275. sprinkle the blood

  276. on the doorpost

  277. that they lived in

  278. and then

  279. the judgment

  280. would pass over.

  281. Why?

  282. Because a substitute

  283. has taken their place.

  284. And so every

  285. Old Testament worshipper

  286. understood this

  287. but then

  288. remarkably

  289. in Isaiah 53

  290. God reveals

  291. there would be

  292. a still greater substitute.

  293. It was never

  294. God's intention

  295. that an animal

  296. could be

  297. a proper substitute

  298. for a person.

  299. So Isaiah 53

  300. God reveals

  301. that a man

  302. would come

  303. the servant

  304. of the Lord

  305. would come

  306. the God man

  307. would come

  308. and he would be

  309. the substitute.

  310. And so we need to see

  311. that from beginning

  312. to end

  313. the message

  314. of the Christian faith

  315. is not

  316. Jesus is my example.

  317. Now sometimes

  318. where people go wrong

  319. they think

  320. well

  321. Jesus gives

  322. me a moral code

  323. and he gives me

  324. a set of rules

  325. and if I try really hard

  326. that's what Christianity

  327. is about.

  328. No it's not

  329. Jesus is my example.

  330. Christianity is

  331. Jesus is my

  332. substitute.

  333. I will never

  334. understand

  335. the Christian faith

  336. and its good news

  337. until we understand that.

  338. Now let's think

  339. of it another way.

  340. another way to think

  341. about substitution.

  342. Substitution in the Bible

  343. is presented

  344. as the answer

  345. to humanity's

  346. greatest problem.

  347. So naturally

  348. maybe especially

  349. as we watch

  350. the news

  351. we check our

  352. social media feeds

  353. we perhaps

  354. typically think

  355. our biggest problems

  356. lie outside of us.

  357. And there are many

  358. aren't they

  359. and they are real.

  360. The cost of living

  361. crisis

  362. environmental

  363. disasters

  364. global

  365. conflicts

  366. violence

  367. on our streets

  368. the ongoing

  369. impact of

  370. pandemic.

  371. So we typically

  372. think that the big

  373. problems are outside

  374. of us and the

  375. solutions

  376. again by nature

  377. we think

  378. the solutions

  379. are within.

  380. They're within us.

  381. We have the ability

  382. we have the resources

  383. we can fix these things

  384. we can find

  385. the answers.

  386. And what the Bible

  387. does

  388. is the Bible

  389. humbles us

  390. because it shows

  391. it's the other way

  392. around.

  393. Because the Bible

  394. says time and time

  395. again the biggest

  396. problem lies inside

  397. of us.

  398. It's the problem

  399. of our sin

  400. before God.

  401. It's our rebellion

  402. against Him.

  403. It's our law breaking.

  404. That's the problem.

  405. It's the guilt

  406. that we have

  407. in the eyes

  408. of a holy God.

  409. It's the fact

  410. that by nature

  411. because of our sin

  412. we stand separate

  413. from God.

  414. We are enemies

  415. of God

  416. and we are heading

  417. for a lost eternity

  418. in hell.

  419. That's the biggest

  420. problem

  421. we all face.

  422. And the solution

  423. wonderfully

  424. the solution

  425. doesn't lie

  426. inside of us

  427. it lies

  428. outside of us

  429. in God

  430. giving His Son

  431. Jesus

  432. to save

  433. and to forgive

  434. and to bring peace.

  435. So the Bible

  436. is clear

  437. and Peter

  438. is clear

  439. the heart

  440. of the problem

  441. is the problem

  442. of our human hearts

  443. and the sin

  444. that lies

  445. within.

  446. And it's so important

  447. for us to recognize

  448. these two realities

  449. if we are to understand

  450. why substitution

  451. is good news.

  452. It's important

  453. we understand

  454. first

  455. that we are more

  456. guilty

  457. and sinful

  458. than we realize

  459. and secondly

  460. that God

  461. is more holy

  462. and righteous

  463. than we realize.

  464. by way of

  465. a picture

  466. and by way

  467. of confession

  468. from time to time

  469. I find myself

  470. digging in the garden

  471. sometimes weeding

  472. sometimes planting

  473. but often

  474. maybe some of you

  475. can relate to this

  476. I find myself

  477. quite lazy

  478. when it comes time

  479. to come back inside

  480. forget to take the shoes off

  481. can't be bothered

  482. to clean my hands

  483. and what's the result?

  484. you find those

  485. telltale muddy

  486. footprints

  487. all through the kitchen

  488. you find the towel

  489. that's covered

  490. in dirt

  491. and grime

  492. there are smudges

  493. everywhere

  494. mud sticks

  495. mud affects

  496. everything

  497. and it's a picture

  498. of our own

  499. sin

  500. and we need to understand

  501. that our thoughts

  502. our words

  503. our actions

  504. our motives

  505. before a holy God

  506. are not pure and perfect

  507. and then because

  508. God is holy

  509. and God is righteous

  510. he cannot simply

  511. sweep our sin

  512. under the rug

  513. he cannot turn

  514. a blind eye to him

  515. he can't say

  516. never mind

  517. you'll do better

  518. next time

  519. because if God

  520. doesn't care about sin

  521. if God does not

  522. act righteously

  523. then he ceases

  524. to be who he is

  525. the Bible says

  526. he is a holy God

  527. he is a just God

  528. so he cannot be unjust

  529. so then the question

  530. becomes

  531. how can God

  532. be true to himself

  533. how can he be both

  534. just

  535. and

  536. loving

  537. how can he

  538. justly deal with sin

  539. and how can he love

  540. people like us

  541. who are sinners

  542. the answer

  543. is wonderful

  544. the answer is by

  545. God himself

  546. providing

  547. a perfect

  548. substitute

  549. by the son

  550. of God

  551. coming to receive

  552. the judgment

  553. that we deserve

  554. so that sinners

  555. might receive

  556. pardon

  557. that's the heart

  558. of the gospel

  559. that's the heart

  560. of the good news

  561. so that's what

  562. substitution

  563. is

  564. next

  565. let's think about

  566. who is

  567. this substitute

  568. so we sang

  569. in my place

  570. condemned

  571. he stood

  572. so let's

  573. think together

  574. who is

  575. he

  576. this one

  577. who stood

  578. condemned

  579. in the place

  580. of sinners

  581. and again

  582. this answer

  583. though we may be

  584. familiar with it

  585. should

  586. truly amaze

  587. us

  588. it's also

  589. a way to help us

  590. with the question

  591. is it fair

  592. so sometimes the question

  593. is that

  594. is it fair

  595. that one person

  596. should pay

  597. for the sins

  598. of another

  599. and hopefully

  600. as we think

  601. about who is

  602. the substitute

  603. we'll go some way

  604. to answering that

  605. so who is the

  606. substitute

  607. according to

  608. Peter

  609. well look at

  610. verse 21

  611. we're given a title

  612. there to this

  613. you were called

  614. because Christ

  615. suffered for you

  616. Christ is the one

  617. in verse 24

  618. he himself

  619. bore our sins

  620. so let's think

  621. who is this

  622. Christ

  623. that's a title

  624. that we find

  625. from the Old Testament

  626. God's promised

  627. king

  628. the one who

  629. would be

  630. anointed

  631. given a special

  632. role

  633. this role

  634. to be king

  635. and saviour

  636. and it's this

  637. king

  638. this perfect

  639. one

  640. who is loaded

  641. up

  642. with sin

  643. condemned

  644. at the cross

  645. and so remember

  646. we said at the

  647. beginning that

  648. Mark's gospel

  649. records

  650. Peter's testimony

  651. to the life

  652. of Jesus

  653. and when you

  654. read

  655. in Mark's

  656. gospel

  657. you discover

  658. so much

  659. of Peter

  660. telling us

  661. about the

  662. identity

  663. of Jesus

  664. so verse 1

  665. chapter 1

  666. verse 1

  667. it's the good

  668. news

  669. his gospel

  670. is the good

  671. news

  672. about Jesus

  673. Christ

  674. the son of

  675. God

  676. so who is

  677. this Christ

  678. he is

  679. none other

  680. than the

  681. eternal

  682. son of

  683. God

  684. the one

  685. who became

  686. truly human

  687. to be the

  688. king and the

  689. saviour

  690. the world

  691. was waiting

  692. for

  693. and you go

  694. through the

  695. gospel

  696. Mark

  697. really divides

  698. his testimony

  699. into two

  700. the first

  701. eight chapters

  702. are revealing

  703. the glory

  704. of Christ

  705. so we see

  706. his amazing

  707. miracles

  708. here's the

  709. one who

  710. heals the

  711. sick and

  712. stills the

  713. storm and

  714. even raises

  715. the dead

  716. he is the

  717. one with

  718. incredible

  719. authority

  720. Jesus says

  721. that he has

  722. the authority

  723. to forgive

  724. sins

  725. that he's

  726. lord of

  727. the sabbath

  728. the people

  729. are amazed

  730. that we never

  731. heard teaching

  732. like this

  733. before

  734. and so the

  735. first eight

  736. chapters

  737. he cries

  738. astonished

  739. by the glory

  740. of Jesus

  741. in his

  742. actions

  743. and in his

  744. words

  745. but then

  746. chapters nine

  747. to sixteen

  748. there's a

  749. turn

  750. and it's

  751. revealed that

  752. this same

  753. glorious king

  754. has come to

  755. be the

  756. suffering servant

  757. spoken of

  758. in Isaiah

  759. 53

  760. this wonderful

  761. king sent

  762. by God

  763. to be our

  764. saviour

  765. will die

  766. the death

  767. of a criminal

  768. back to

  769. first Peter

  770. and three

  771. truths about

  772. who is

  773. the substitute

  774. first of all

  775. in verse

  776. 22 and

  777. 23 we

  778. discover that

  779. Jesus is a

  780. sinless

  781. substitute

  782. so it

  783. begins there

  784. he committed

  785. no sin

  786. all of the

  787. actions of

  788. Jesus are

  789. righteous and

  790. holy and

  791. good

  792. he goes on

  793. no deceit

  794. was found

  795. in his

  796. mouth

  797. Jesus spoke

  798. truth

  799. every word

  800. that came

  801. from his

  802. mouth

  803. was

  804. righteous

  805. verse 23

  806. when they

  807. hurled their

  808. insults at

  809. him

  810. he did not

  811. retaliate

  812. when he

  813. suffered

  814. he made

  815. no threats

  816. his responses

  817. were always

  818. perfect and

  819. righteous

  820. even under

  821. the most

  822. intense

  823. suffering

  824. end of

  825. verse 23

  826. instead

  827. he entrusted

  828. himself to

  829. him who

  830. judges

  831. justly

  832. Jesus

  833. in all of

  834. his motives

  835. desires to

  836. do the

  837. will of

  838. his father

  839. his obedience

  840. is perfect

  841. and

  842. complete

  843. maybe you

  844. find yourself

  845. reading the

  846. old testament

  847. and ask

  848. yourself

  849. why is

  850. there the

  851. big emphasis

  852. on these

  853. animals that

  854. are sacrificed

  855. having to be

  856. pure

  857. the answer

  858. is because

  859. they're

  860. representing

  861. a perfect

  862. pure and

  863. holy

  864. savior

  865. so jesus

  866. is holy

  867. and jesus

  868. is sinless

  869. because he

  870. is the

  871. son of

  872. god

  873. we also

  874. discover that

  875. jesus

  876. is the

  877. sin

  878. bearing

  879. substitute

  880. verse 24

  881. can be

  882. described in

  883. terms of

  884. a great

  885. exchange

  886. so what

  887. happens

  888. there

  889. he himself

  890. bore our

  891. sins in

  892. his body

  893. on the

  894. tree

  895. on the

  896. cross

  897. so that

  898. we might

  899. die to

  900. sins

  901. and live

  902. for

  903. righteousness

  904. there on

  905. the cross

  906. jesus

  907. becomes

  908. sin

  909. with

  910. our

  911. sin

  912. so that

  913. we might

  914. become

  915. righteous

  916. with his

  917. righteousness

  918. peter

  919. uses

  920. an

  921. interesting

  922. phrase

  923. in verse

  924. 24

  925. in the

  926. newer

  927. version

  928. of the

  929. niv

  930. it

  931. doesn't

  932. necessarily

  933. pick it

  934. up

  935. when it

  936. says

  937. he himself

  938. bore our

  939. sins in

  940. his body

  941. on the

  942. cross

  943. literally

  944. he bore

  945. our sins

  946. in his

  947. body

  948. on the

  949. tree

  950. and so

  951. again

  952. maybe you

  953. have the

  954. question

  955. why is he

  956. talking about

  957. the cross

  958. as being

  959. like a

  960. tree

  961. it's

  962. because

  963. peter

  964. knows his

  965. old

  966. testament

  967. and he

  968. knows in

  969. the

  970. old

  971. testament

  972. that

  973. everyone

  974. who hung

  975. on a

  976. tree

  977. was

  978. recognized

  979. to be

  980. under

  981. the

  982. curse

  983. of

  984. God

  985. and so

  986. peter

  987. deliberately

  988. uses

  989. this

  990. language

  991. to show

  992. to you

  993. and to

  994. me

  995. that

  996. jesus

  997. the

  998. perfect

  999. sinless

  1000. son

  1001. of

  1002. god

  1003. was

  1004. willing

  1005. to go

  1006. under

  1007. god's

  1008. curse

  1009. so that

  1010. you and

  1011. i might

  1012. know

  1013. god's

  1014. blessing

  1015. what

  1016. what we

  1017. discover

  1018. happening

  1019. at the

  1020. cross

  1021. is that

  1022. jesus

  1023. experiences

  1024. holy

  1025. anger

  1026. against

  1027. sin

  1028. from

  1029. his

  1030. father

  1031. so that

  1032. his

  1033. people

  1034. those

  1035. who

  1036. trust

  1037. in

  1038. him

  1039. never

  1040. will

  1041. third

  1042. thing

  1043. to notice

  1044. about

  1045. who

  1046. our

  1047. substitute

  1048. is

  1049. he

  1050. is

  1051. a

  1052. reconciling

  1053. substitute

  1054. look at

  1055. verse 25

  1056. for you

  1057. are like

  1058. sheep

  1059. going

  1060. astray

  1061. but now

  1062. you have

  1063. returned

  1064. to the

  1065. shepherd

  1066. and the

  1067. overseer

  1068. of your

  1069. souls

  1070. the image

  1071. in isaiah

  1072. 53

  1073. god's

  1074. people

  1075. straying

  1076. into

  1077. sin

  1078. the lord

  1079. lays the

  1080. iniquity

  1081. on him

  1082. the image

  1083. of the

  1084. straying

  1085. sheep

  1086. that by

  1087. nature

  1088. left to

  1089. ourselves

  1090. we are

  1091. as people

  1092. separated

  1093. from god

  1094. we are

  1095. in

  1096. danger

  1097. we are

  1098. facing

  1099. death

  1100. in

  1101. our

  1102. sin

  1103. but

  1104. jesus

  1105. comes

  1106. as the

  1107. good

  1108. shepherd

  1109. the good

  1110. shepherd of

  1111. luke

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  1112. chapter 15

  1113. who searches

  1114. for lost

  1115. sheep

  1116. in his

  1117. love and

  1118. grace

  1119. who joyfully

  1120. brings them

  1121. home

  1122. to his

  1123. father

  1124. he's the

  1125. good shepherd

  1126. who in

  1127. john

    John 10 chapter mention

  1128. chapter 10

  1129. declares that

  1130. he knows

  1131. his sheep

  1132. and he

  1133. loves his

  1134. sheep

  1135. and he'll

  1136. lay down

  1137. his life

  1138. for his

  1139. sheep

  1140. so it's

  1141. through the

  1142. cross of

  1143. jesus and

  1144. it's through

  1145. the work of

  1146. jesus the

  1147. substitute

  1148. that you and

  1149. i as spiritual

  1150. strays

  1151. as spiritual

  1152. runaways

  1153. can be brought

  1154. home

  1155. because jesus

  1156. in his own

  1157. body takes

  1158. the sin

  1159. and guilt

  1160. that we

  1161. deserve

  1162. he pays

  1163. the price

  1164. we should

  1165. pay

  1166. and he

  1167. does that

  1168. so that

  1169. we might

  1170. be called

  1171. home

  1172. if we

  1173. will receive

  1174. him as

  1175. lord and

  1176. savior

  1177. the bible's

  1178. remarkable

  1179. message

  1180. is it's

  1181. none other

  1182. than

  1183. the god

  1184. man

  1185. who bore

  1186. the sins

  1187. and took

  1188. the place

  1189. and faced

  1190. the judgment

  1191. for his

  1192. people

  1193. romans 5

    Romans 5:8

  1194. verse 8

  1195. god demonstrates

  1196. his love

  1197. for us

  1198. in this

  1199. while we

  1200. were still

  1201. sinners

  1202. christ

  1203. this christ

  1204. died for

  1205. us

  1206. maybe we

  1207. find ourselves

  1208. wrestling with

  1209. this reality

  1210. peter

  1211. who wrote

  1212. our letter

  1213. he definitely

  1214. wrestled with

  1215. this reality

  1216. he couldn't

  1217. see any way

  1218. that the cross

  1219. could be jesus

  1220. destiny or jesus

  1221. mission or

  1222. good news

  1223. jesus if you're

  1224. the king why

  1225. would you suffer

  1226. in humiliation

  1227. but after the

  1228. resurrection

  1229. then peter

  1230. understands

  1231. and then

  1232. substitution

  1233. becomes the

  1234. heart of the

  1235. gospel

  1236. that he

  1237. loves and

  1238. proclaims

  1239. let me ask

  1240. you today

  1241. can you

  1242. say

  1243. and believe

  1244. and rest

  1245. your hope

  1246. on this

  1247. reality

  1248. he himself

  1249. bore my

  1250. sins

  1251. in his

  1252. body

  1253. on the

  1254. tree

  1255. so that

  1256. I

  1257. might die

  1258. to sins

  1259. and live

  1260. for righteousness

  1261. if that's

  1262. your reality

  1263. praise god

  1264. and if not

  1265. ask

  1266. for the

  1267. faith

  1268. to believe

  1269. it

  1270. here is

  1271. the one

  1272. who is

  1273. totally god

  1274. and totally

  1275. man

  1276. hanging

  1277. in the

  1278. place of

  1279. sinners

  1280. and that

  1281. reality

  1282. actually gives

  1283. the answer

  1284. to the

  1285. question

  1286. is the

  1287. cross

  1288. fair

  1289. can

  1290. someone

  1291. pay

  1292. for the

  1293. sin

  1294. of another

  1295. perhaps

  1296. we've had

  1297. that question

  1298. before

  1299. and when we

  1300. think about

  1301. it in terms

  1302. of human

  1303. justice

  1304. so if we

  1305. were in a

  1306. human law

  1307. court

  1308. and a

  1309. judge

  1310. decided to

  1311. punish

  1312. an innocent

  1313. person instead

  1314. of a guilty

  1315. one what

  1316. would we

  1317. call that

  1318. we'd call it

  1319. injustice

  1320. wouldn't we

  1321. but in

  1322. God's law

  1323. court by

  1324. God's design

  1325. what do we

  1326. call it

  1327. when the

  1328. innocent

  1329. dies in place

  1330. of the guilty

  1331. we call it a

  1332. miracle of

  1333. grace

  1334. we call it

  1335. the gospel

  1336. but maybe

  1337. you ask

  1338. how can

  1339. this be

  1340. and it's

  1341. because of

  1342. the identity

  1343. of Jesus

  1344. because Jesus

  1345. is fully

  1346. God

  1347. he is the

  1348. lawmaker

  1349. who gives

  1350. himself for

  1351. lawbreakers

  1352. and so we

  1353. understand in

  1354. the gospel

  1355. that substitution

  1356. and grace

  1357. are part of

  1358. God's eternal

  1359. law court

  1360. there is a

  1361. principle of

  1362. justice and

  1363. mercy

  1364. written

  1365. in eternity

  1366. that we

  1367. see at

  1368. the cross

  1369. as we

  1370. close

  1371. why is

  1372. substitution

  1373. good news

  1374. it's not

  1375. always good

  1376. news in a

  1377. world of

  1378. sports

  1379. nobody really

  1380. enjoys being

  1381. substituted

  1382. unless they

  1383. absolutely have

  1384. to be

  1385. you can

  1386. guarantee

  1387. if you

  1388. watch

  1389. football for

  1390. a season

  1391. you will

  1392. inevitably see

  1393. at least one

  1394. grown man

  1395. having a

  1396. tantrum

  1397. having been

  1398. substituted

  1399. in our

  1400. natural

  1401. pride

  1402. nobody

  1403. wants to

  1404. need

  1405. a substitute

  1406. the cultural

  1407. air that we

  1408. breathe

  1409. tells us to

  1410. achieve and

  1411. to perform

  1412. yet substitution

  1413. is God's

  1414. way

  1415. and it's a

  1416. precious way

  1417. when we see

  1418. it in the

  1419. right way

  1420. so let's

  1421. close briefly

  1422. with three

  1423. ways it's

  1424. good news

  1425. for us

  1426. all

  1427. in some

  1428. ways restating

  1429. where we've

  1430. been

  1431. it's good

  1432. news when

  1433. we think

  1434. about justice

  1435. when we

  1436. think about

  1437. the justice

  1438. of God

  1439. since God

  1440. is holy

  1441. and we

  1442. are sinners

  1443. there is a

  1444. price that

  1445. must be

  1446. paid

  1447. the bible

  1448. says the

  1449. wages of

  1450. sin is

  1451. death

  1452. so there

  1453. are two

  1454. options for

  1455. each one

  1456. of us

  1457. either Jesus

  1458. pays for

  1459. our sin

  1460. at the cross

  1461. or we

  1462. pay for

  1463. our sin

  1464. for all

  1465. eternity

  1466. in hell

  1467. it's our

  1468. choice

  1469. and when we

  1470. understand that

  1471. then the gospel

  1472. is good news

  1473. because Jesus

  1474. was willing to

  1475. take our

  1476. hell so that

  1477. we don't have

  1478. to

  1479. the gospel

  1480. says Jesus

  1481. bore sin

  1482. took death

  1483. satisfied the

  1484. demands of

  1485. holy justice

  1486. so that when

  1487. our faith is

  1488. in Jesus

  1489. we can know

  1490. forgiveness

  1491. and we can

  1492. have assurance

  1493. we can look at

  1494. the cross and

  1495. say the verdict

  1496. is already

  1497. in

  1498. so it's good

  1499. news when we

  1500. think about

  1501. justice

  1502. it's good

  1503. news when we

  1504. think about

  1505. salvation

  1506. do you know

  1507. that saving

  1508. grace is

  1509. unique to

  1510. Christianity

  1511. every other

  1512. religion

  1513. every other

  1514. world view

  1515. operates based

  1516. on natural

  1517. pride and

  1518. says either

  1519. I don't need

  1520. a savior

  1521. or I can

  1522. save myself

  1523. but the

  1524. reality is

  1525. that we can

  1526. never match

  1527. God's

  1528. standards

  1529. and that

  1530. has never

  1531. been

  1532. God's

  1533. way

  1534. Mark

  1535. remember

  1536. Mark

  1537. records

  1538. Peter's

  1539. view on

  1540. the life

  1541. of Jesus

  1542. Mark

  1543. records

  1544. a wonderful

  1545. detail at

  1546. the cross

  1547. of Christ

  1548. so remember

  1549. Jesus dies

  1550. outside of

  1551. the city

  1552. but Mark

  1553. records that

  1554. as Jesus

  1555. dies

  1556. something happens

  1557. within the

  1558. city in the

  1559. temple the

  1560. curtain is

  1561. torn in two

  1562. that barrier

  1563. separating the

  1564. holy God

  1565. from sinful

  1566. people has

  1567. been torn

  1568. in two

  1569. the message

  1570. is clear

  1571. the way

  1572. back to

  1573. God is

  1574. open

  1575. through Jesus

  1576. and what he's

  1577. just done

  1578. in dying

  1579. on the cross

  1580. Jesus on

  1581. the cross

  1582. declared

  1583. it is

  1584. finished

  1585. God's

  1586. plan of

  1587. salvation

  1588. has been

  1589. completed

  1590. all that we

  1591. bring

  1592. is our

  1593. need

  1594. and our

  1595. trust in

  1596. him

  1597. and lastly

  1598. substitution

  1599. is really

  1600. good news

  1601. when we

  1602. think about

  1603. the love

  1604. of God

  1605. because the

  1606. message of

  1607. the cross

  1608. speaks

  1609. powerfully

  1610. of the

  1611. love of

  1612. God

  1613. remember

  1614. Romans 5

  1615. 8

  1616. God

  1617. demonstrates

  1618. his love

  1619. and while

  1620. we were

  1621. still sinners

  1622. Christ died

  1623. for us

  1624. it speaks

  1625. of a

  1626. loving

  1627. father

  1628. who gives

  1629. his son

  1630. it speaks

  1631. of a

  1632. loving son

  1633. who willingly

  1634. gives his

  1635. life

  1636. so that

  1637. any of

  1638. us

  1639. by trusting

  1640. Christ as

  1641. savior

  1642. might receive

  1643. eternally

  1644. J.I.

  1645. Packer

  1646. a theologian

  1647. said the

  1648. measure of

  1649. love is

  1650. how much

  1651. it gives

  1652. and the

  1653. measure of

  1654. the love

  1655. of God

  1656. is the

  1657. gift of

  1658. his only

  1659. son

  1660. to be

  1661. made man

  1662. and to

  1663. die for

  1664. sins

  1665. and so

  1666. to become

  1667. the one

  1668. mediator

  1669. who can

  1670. bring us

  1671. to God

  1672. this week

  1673. I came

  1674. across a

  1675. story from

  1676. just after

  1677. the end

  1678. of the

  1679. American

  1680. Civil War

  1681. there was

  1682. a farmer

  1683. in Tennessee

  1684. who was

  1685. observed

  1686. kneeling

  1687. at a

  1688. grave

  1689. and he

  1690. was asked

  1691. is this

  1692. the grave

  1693. of your

  1694. son

  1695. and the

  1696. man

  1697. explained

  1698. no I

  1699. was due

  1700. to go

  1701. to war

  1702. but I

  1703. have a

  1704. wife

  1705. and I

  1706. have

  1707. seven

  1708. young

  1709. children

  1710. and so

  1711. the day

  1712. before I

  1713. was supposed

  1714. to go

  1715. my

  1716. neighbor's

  1717. son

  1718. came

  1719. and he

  1720. took my

  1721. place

  1722. and he

  1723. died

  1724. there

  1725. and so

  1726. the man

  1727. was then

  1728. asked

  1729. what is

  1730. it that

  1731. you're

  1732. writing

  1733. on the

  1734. tombstone

  1735. and this

  1736. Tennessee

  1737. farmer

  1738. wrote

  1739. he

  1740. died

  1741. for me

  1742. love

  1743. and

  1744. worship

  1745. in the

  1746. Christian

  1747. life

  1748. springs

  1749. from

  1750. knowing

  1751. this

  1752. reality

  1753. to be

  1754. true

  1755. in our

  1756. lives

  1757. the

  1758. son

  1759. of

  1760. God

  1761. loved

  1762. me

  1763. and

  1764. gave

  1765. himself

  1766. for

  1767. me

  1768. that's

  1769. why

  1770. substitution

  1771. is the

  1772. very

  1773. heart

  1774. of

  1775. the

  1776. gospel

  1777. let's

  1778. pray

  1779. and give

  1780. thanks

  1781. Lord

  1782. our

  1783. God

  1784. we

  1785. thank

  1786. you

  1787. that

  1788. woven

  1789. throughout

  1790. the

  1791. whole

  1792. Bible

  1793. is

  1794. this

  1795. testimony

  1796. to

  1797. your

  1798. eternal

  1799. people

  1800. by

  1801. sending

  1802. your

  1803. perfect

  1804. sinless

  1805. son

  1806. to be

  1807. the

  1808. substitute

  1809. that we

  1810. need

  1811. to

  1812. take

  1813. our

  1814. place

  1815. to

  1816. take

  1817. our

  1818. sin

  1819. to

  1820. take

  1821. the

  1822. penalty

  1823. sin

  1824. deserves

  1825. so that

  1826. by

  1827. your

  1828. grace

  1829. and by

  1830. faith

  1831. in

  1832. him

  1833. we

  1834. might

  1835. be

  1836. forgiven

  1837. and we

  1838. might

  1839. be

  1840. welcomed

  1841. into

  1842. your

  1843. family

  1844. we

  1845. might

  1846. have

  1847. peace

  1848. with

  1849. you

  1850. we

  1851. might

  1852. have

  1853. hope

  1854. in

  1855. life

  1856. and

  1857. death

  1858. may

  1859. you

  1860. give

  1861. to

  1862. all

  1863. of

  1864. us

  1865. a

  1866. growing

  1867. appreciation

  1868. of

  1869. the

  1870. message

  1871. of

  1872. substitution

  1873. that

  1874. it

  1875. would

  1876. fill

  1877. us

  1878. with

  1879. worship

  1880. and

  1881. fill

  1882. us

  1883. with

  1884. a

  1885. sense

  1886. of

  1887. grateful

  1888. joy

  1889. we

  1890. pray

  1891. in

  1892. Jesus

  1893. name

  1894. Amen

  1895. now

  1896. later
