  1. The scripture reading comes from Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  4. In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed.

  5. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter.

  6. Daniel declared,

  7. I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea,

  8. and the four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.

  9. The first was like a lion and had eagle's wings.

  10. Then, as I looked, its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man,

  11. and the mind of a man was given to it.

  12. And behold, another beast, a second one like a bear.

  13. It was raised up on one side.

  14. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth, and it was told,

  15. Arise, devour much flesh.

  16. After this, I looked, and behold, another like a leopard with four wings of a bird on its back.

  17. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it.

  18. After this, I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong.

  19. It had great iron teeth.

  20. It devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet.

  21. It was different from all the beasts that were before it.

  22. And it had ten horns.

  23. I considered the horns.

  24. And behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots.

  25. And behold, in this horn were the eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth speaking great things.

  26. As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat.

  27. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool.

  28. His throne was fiery flames.

  29. Its wheels were burning fire.

  30. A stream of fire issued and came out before him.

  31. A thousand thousand served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

  32. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.

  33. I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking.

  34. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire.

  35. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

  36. I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven, there came one like a son of man.

  37. And he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.

  38. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him.

  39. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

  40. As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me.

  41. I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this.

  42. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things.

  43. These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth, but the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.

  44. Then I desired to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying with the horn that had eyes.

  45. As I looked, this horn made war with the saints and prevailed over them until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom.

  46. Thus he said,

  47. He said,

  48. Here is the end of the matter.

  49. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly alarmed me, and my color changed, but I kept the matter in my heart.

  50. This is the word of God.

  51. Thank you, Celeste.

  52. Oh, feels a bit loud.

  53. Thank you, Celeste.

  54. That was great.

  55. Those of you who don't know me, welcome.

  56. My name's Chris.

  57. I'm one of the leaders here.

  58. And we're going through this series in Daniel.

  59. Today we're going to come to the last of our series.

  60. We're going to stop in chapter 7.

  61. But before we do that, what I'd love to do is just pray, because we need Jesus, right?

  62. So let me just pray for us as we engage with God's word.

  63. Father, I thank you that when you speak, we need to listen.

  64. And thank you that you are a God who wants to speak to us.

  65. Thank you you're a God who doesn't just speak abstract things which bear zero relation to our lives,

  66. but you know each one of us.

  67. You know where we're up to.

  68. You know our thoughts, our dreams, our desires, our fears.

  69. And you want to speak to each one of us this morning.

  70. And I pray, Lord, that you give us hearts which are open.

  71. I pray that you give us hearts which don't just go through the motions,

  72. but really want you to open up our hearts and our lives so that we're changed by you through your word.

  73. So, Father, we just please speak through my word.

  74. So, Lord, remove anything that is not from you, but let your name be honored this morning, we pray.

  75. In Jesus' name.

  76. Amen.

  77. Great.

  78. So, as I said, we're coming to the end of our series in Daniel.

  79. And we're finishing at Daniel 7.

  80. And Daniel 7 is a bit of like a mountain peak.

  81. You know when you climb up a mountain, there are many different paths which get there.

  82. And through Daniel, through chapters 1 to 6, we've seen lots of different themes of the sovereignty and the faithfulness and the deliverance of God throughout there.

  83. But actually, as we come to chapter 7, it's going to draw those themes together in one peak of this book.

  84. And this is a little bit of a crazy chapter in many ways.

  85. And so, we're going to kind of get through into some of what's going on here.

  86. But to start with, on Monday, I was actually walking home near where I lived.

  87. And I just looked over and there was a big guy with his girlfriend in the middle of the road.

  88. And kind of crossing the road.

  89. And he was pushing her into the road.

  90. And he kind of, she stood up and he kind of manhandled her across.

  91. And I was so mad, I went over and confronted him.

  92. But at that moment, the lady, she was clearly under his spell and just intimidated by this guy.

  93. And she kind of didn't want any help.

  94. And the guy kind of calmed down for a little bit.

  95. And the last thing I saw was him walking off, him roughly holding her arm.

  96. And inside of me, I just felt powerless.

  97. I felt angry and I felt powerless that there was nothing I could do.

  98. And before we start actually getting into this passage,

  99. if any of you actually have experienced any kind of abuse,

  100. whether it's spiritual, emotional, verbal, physical, whatever it is,

  101. we want you to know that in Watermark,

  102. this needs to be a place where you can just come and tell,

  103. whether it's an elder, a staff, anybody, a CG leader,

  104. because don't stay silent.

  105. Start today.

  106. But I tell you that story because that is exactly what this passage is doing.

  107. It is telling us, it is trying to get into your heart and your soul and your emotion.

  108. And it's meant to show you that this is what ungodly power is like.

  109. This passage is going to contrast two kingdoms, two operating systems in the world.

  110. One is an abusive, intimidating, beast-like power of ungodly kingdoms.

  111. The other is a humanizing, true, faithful kingdom of God.

  112. There is beasts and there is the Son of Man.

  113. And that is what this passage is going to be talking about.

  114. And through the book of Daniel, we've seen some of the beasts in the fiery furnace.

  115. We've seen it in the lion's den.

  116. But today, Daniel's going to give you some visual imagery.

  117. It's what's called apocalyptic literature.

  118. Literally, you know, like the book of Revelation is written in this.

  119. And actually, Revelation uses some of the imagery from Daniel.

  120. And we get a bit weirded out by it.

  121. But actually, it's meant to be like this visual CGI feast for your eyes, which is not just trying to get into your logical mind.

  122. It's actually trying to capture your imagination and your emotions to both feel the fear of what's going on,

  123. but also to see the glory of who Jesus is and what he's doing.

  124. That's what Daniel's trying to do in this passage, okay?

  125. So if you've got your bulletin with you, we're going to kind of walk through this passage together.

  126. And we're going to look in three aspects.

  127. We're going to look at the terror of the beasts.

  128. We're going to look at the justice of the judge.

  129. And we're going to look at the crowning of the king, okay?

  130. So the terror of the beasts.

  131. You know, Genesis 1 tells us that humans were made in God's image to rule over beasts of the earth.

  132. But in this passage, powerful human kings and kingdoms have become beasts.

  133. And Daniel goes back into the reign of Belshazzar.

  134. Remember, he's the guy with the writing on the wall.

  135. Remember that?

  136. And he has this dream where he's on the beach.

  137. And he sees the sea is chaotic and churning like in a typhoon.

  138. And out of this sea, four beasts arise.

  139. Each one is representing a self-exalting, abusive kingdom or dynasty or king which rejects God's rule.

  140. You see, there's this lion with eagle's wings.

  141. There's a bear which has got three rib bones in its mouth.

  142. It's just eaten from the kill.

  143. And then it's going back for more flesh.

  144. It's been invading places.

  145. Then there's a leopard which is fast.

  146. And it's got four wings.

  147. And it heads to sea and move wherever it goes.

  148. It's got the power to extend over huge territory.

  149. And then there's a fourth beast.

  150. And this fourth beast is different from the others.

  151. This fourth beast is more powerful.

  152. It's ferocious.

  153. It's intimidating more than all the others.

  154. And it's got ten horns, which are actually ten kings.

  155. And ten is a complete number.

  156. So it's showing their total power.

  157. And then there's this little yapping king, a little yapping horn with a big mouth there.

  158. And it's this beast, number four, that Daniel focuses on.

  159. And I don't know about you, but that's a little bit weird.

  160. But actually, my wife and I, we watched this documentary called The Grizzly Man the other day.

  161. It's a very old documentary.

  162. I don't know if you've seen it.

  163. It's about this guy who lived in Alaska for 13 years with grizzly bears.

  164. And there's one point in this, it's real footage of this guy.

  165. And he's standing next to this bear beside him.

  166. And he's filming.

  167. And suddenly you see the bear stand up on his hind legs and tower over him.

  168. And with just one claw, he could just rip him to pieces.

  169. And your heart is in your mouth.

  170. It's like terrifying.

  171. This is what Daniel is trying to do with this image.

  172. This beast that he's talking about isn't friendly.

  173. That's the point, okay?

  174. And so, who is he talking about?

  175. Well, there's lots of speculation about the different kingdoms.

  176. But in the book of Daniel, we've had and we know that he talks about Babylon,

  177. the Medes and the Persians as kingdoms and Greece.

  178. These are all clearly represented here.

  179. Just as in the statue of chapter 2,

  180. They're the same kind of kingdoms that are matched on there.

  181. But this fourth beast is kind of intentionally vague.

  182. You know, you don't actually know what it looks like.

  183. And I think that is the reason why Daniel is doing this.

  184. The reason why he's different from all the others is he's trying to resonate with the readers in their current circumstances.

  185. And he's trying to show us that actually human rule,

  186. that beast also stands for human rule in every single generation,

  187. which rejects God,

  188. is both frightening and powerful and abusively destructive.

  189. Now, verse 21 tells us that little big mouth horn,

  190. he goes and makes war with the saints and he prevails over them.

  191. Now, what's he talking about?

  192. Well, actually, throughout history, you'll see this has occurred multiple times.

  193. In the second century BC, there was a guy called Antiochus.

  194. He was the king over an area including Judea, Palestine.

  195. And he called himself God Manifest.

  196. He had a bit of an ego complex.

  197. And he got angry at some Jews who opposed his regime.

  198. And he took revenge by mercilessly killing Jewish men, women, and children

  199. and forcing those who didn't submit to his rule to either eat unclean pork or be killed.

  200. He's not a nice guy.

  201. In the first century AD, Revelation 13 describes the imagery from all the four beasts in Daniel.

  202. And he's referring to a Roman emperor called Nero,

  203. who actually persecuted Christians and set them alight just to assert his power.

  204. And we could go on throughout the whole of history to show how beastly kingdoms work.

  205. Even today, you see across the world, governments are clamping down on churches and believers.

  206. And we don't know how long before that's here.

  207. In the UK, where I was just talking to my parents,

  208. they were saying that the cultural pressure regarding a fluid sense of identity and gender

  209. and all these kind of things is so strong that anyone who disagrees

  210. is labeled a bigot and is shunned and can have even worse consequences.

  211. The media bombards us with sexual imagery, with pornography,

  212. with ideas of a perfect body image that you've got to fit in,

  213. and it oppresses and it intimidates and it enslaves us if we don't fit in.

  214. There's pressure to live a consumer lifestyle where you are defined by what you eat,

  215. what you live, what you wear, where you go to work, the car you drive, the schools you go to.

  216. In our workplaces, I speak to many of you who feel intimidated by demanding bosses

  217. whose thirst for power and success can just drive you into the ground.

  218. We could go on, but all of these are examples of when human power rejects God's rule,

  219. we become beastly.

  220. You know, an author, Aime Cesare, or César, actually,

  221. who was writing about colonialism, he said this.

  222. He said,

  223. The colonizer, who in order to ease his conscience,

  224. gets into the habit of seeing the other man as an animal,

  225. accustoms himself to treating him like an animal,

  226. and tends objectively to transform himself into an animal.

  227. Do you see what he's saying here?

  228. He's saying when human beings seek power apart from God,

  229. we end up using our power and justifying our power

  230. to dehumanize other people.

  231. And as we do that, we actually end up dehumanizing ourselves

  232. and become like animals.

  233. That's what Daniel is trying to show us.

  234. And, you know, I hear many Christians saying nowadays,

  235. you know, that Christianity and Christian values are under threat like never before.

  236. Some of us feel the intimidation.

  237. But actually, Daniel would say,

  238. actually, every generation, there's been many generations in history

  239. that have felt this.

  240. And do you know why?

  241. It's because there's a war up.

  242. There's a war between kingdoms.

  243. That is why.

  244. The beast is at work in every culture, in every period.

  245. Sometimes there's a lull.

  246. But actually, Daniel's trying to say,

  247. wake up and see,

  248. behind the beauty of what's there,

  249. that actually there is a beast.

  250. And actually, Daniel's also showing something else.

  251. He's also pointing out the beast is not just out there.

  252. The beast is also in here.

  253. Because, you know, King Nebuchadnezzar,

  254. Belshazzar, Darius,

  255. all the guys we've seen,

  256. what characterizes their rule?

  257. Well, it's pride.

  258. It's trying to be in control of life.

  259. It's jealousy.

  260. It's contempt for God.

  261. It's all those things which actually,

  262. if you're anything like me,

  263. don't they just characterize us at times?

  264. And so, what Daniel is trying to show us

  265. is that the beast is not a lovely kitten.

  266. You know, when Nebuchadnezzar sees in chapter 2

  267. the four kingdoms as four statues

  268. with gold and silver and bronze and clay,

  269. those are beautiful metals.

  270. But Daniel, who is a believer,

  271. sees the opposite side

  272. and he sees the same things

  273. and he sees the beastly nature of them.

  274. If you don't see at any point in your life

  275. the pressure to live following Christ in this city,

  276. then it may be because you've already been taken by the beast.

  277. Because the beast wants you to submit to it.

  278. But Daniel's going to say something.

  279. Because the beast is not just chaotic,

  280. it's not just beastly,

  281. it's also temporary.

  282. Because he shows you every kingdom comes and goes.

  283. None of these kingdoms,

  284. none of these beasts lasts.

  285. And you know,

  286. just when you think this beast is so powerful

  287. and so strong that you feel so frightened,

  288. Daniel calls you to keep looking.

  289. And here's the second point.

  290. The justice of the judge.

  291. So, this is looking through

  292. into verses 9 through to 12.

  293. You see, as he keeps looking at this vision,

  294. do you know what he sees?

  295. It's kind of like the matrix

  296. where he kind of goes behind the scenes

  297. to what is actually going on

  298. into the courtroom of heaven.

  299. And I don't know if you've ever been into a court,

  300. but they say,

  301. would you all stand and all rise

  302. and the judge walks in.

  303. And then when the judge sits down,

  304. the trial's about to begin.

  305. And here what you see is

  306. the thrones are wheeled out

  307. and the Ancient of Days,

  308. God himself,

  309. comes and he sits down

  310. and books of judgment are open.

  311. But you see,

  312. this judge,

  313. his authority is not temporary like the beast's.

  314. It is eternal because he's ancient.

  315. He's the source and the sustainer

  316. and the beginning of history

  317. and the end of all history.

  318. He has holy fire coming from his throne,

  319. which can consume any beastly rule

  320. with a click of his fingers.

  321. The armies of heaven

  322. fill the place in front of him.

  323. His hair is white like wool

  324. of the wisdom that he has.

  325. And his clothes are white,

  326. showing that his judgments are not beastly,

  327. but they are pure

  328. and they are perfect

  329. and they are good.

  330. He is majestic.

  331. He's the one who's on the throne.

  332. He's in control of everything.

  333. And behind all the powerful corporations,

  334. all the powerful governments,

  335. all the powerful bosses,

  336. all the things that sometimes intimidate us in this life,

  337. he says there is a true seat of power

  338. and the one who's sitting on it

  339. is the Ancient of Days.

  340. You know,

  341. when Jesus was going to the cross

  342. and he comes before the pilot,

  343. and pilot is the epitome

  344. of ruthless Roman power.

  345. His life is at stake.

  346. And do you know what Jesus says?

  347. What he does?

  348. You know,

  349. he could kind of bargain for his life with pilot,

  350. say,

  351. hey,

  352. like,

  353. get me out of jail free here,

  354. please.

  355. But he doesn't.

  356. You know what he says?

  357. He says,

  358. you've got no authority over me

  359. except that which has been given to you.

  360. That's courage.

  361. And he says,

  362. I could call down legions of angels right now

  363. if I wanted to.

  364. You're not in charge here,

  365. pilot,

  366. because there is a higher judge

  367. who's in control at this moment.

  368. And you see,

  369. what happens here

  370. in the vision

  371. is the judge

  372. then pronounces this verdict on the beast

  373. and it's a death sentence.

  374. His rule is over.

  375. Finished.

  376. There is freedom

  377. and liberation.

  378. You know when,

  379. do you know when Harvey Weinstein,

  380. who was that once all-powerful mover

  381. and shaker in Hollywood,

  382. who his word

  383. either made or broke careers.

  384. I don't know if you saw,

  385. but when he came into court

  386. to be convicted

  387. of sexual abuse and rape,

  388. he looked just a pathetic sight.

  389. He was sick.

  390. He was a shadow of his former self.

  391. And every person

  392. who had lived under that shadow

  393. of intimidation

  394. and being bullied

  395. and all the other things abused by him,

  396. if they had known

  397. where he would end it up,

  398. would that have encouraged them

  399. to persevere

  400. when it seemed like he was strong?

  401. I think it would.

  402. Because they would have hope

  403. that justice was going to be done.

  404. And God,

  405. as the supreme judge,

  406. even in the places

  407. where we feel injustice,

  408. where we feel the pressure,

  409. where we feel the intimidation,

  410. he says he will bring justice to bear

  411. in the same way

  412. and it will be a liberation.

  413. It will be a freedom.

  414. It will be a place

  415. where there is true justice.

  416. And so for us as God's people,

  417. he calls us to stay faithful to him.

  418. That even though

  419. other people may ridicule you

  420. when you speak of Jesus,

  421. even though

  422. if you draw boundaries

  423. around your work

  424. that actually

  425. mean that when you have

  426. unreasonable bosses

  427. who try and force you to work

  428. even when you don't actually have to

  429. so that you feel like

  430. you can't even engage

  431. on church on Sundays

  432. or in CG,

  433. but actually

  434. you are called to say

  435. I'm going to draw those boundaries

  436. because I'm going to

  437. keep my eyes fixed

  438. on a higher judge

  439. regardless of the consequences.

  440. When you feel the cost,

  441. Daniel tells you

  442. to keep looking.

  443. Keep looking behind

  444. the bear that seems

  445. in front of you

  446. and to see the one

  447. who is on the throne

  448. because he's the one

  449. who will bring judgment

  450. and he's the one

  451. who will bring justice.

  452. Can you trust his timing

  453. wherever you are today?

  454. You see,

  455. beastly rule is intimidating

  456. but it's temporary.

  457. God's rule

  458. is eternal,

  459. authoritative

  460. and liberating.

  461. And you think,

  462. that's great.

  463. But that's not the end

  464. of the vision

  465. because Daniel says

  466. you've got to keep looking

  467. because he says

  468. I then saw

  469. and it's the word

  470. actually I kept looking

  471. because we don't just see

  472. the terror of the beast,

  473. we don't just see

  474. the justice of the judge,

  475. but actually you've got to see

  476. the crowning of the king.

  477. And here we see

  478. verse 13 and 14.

  479. Because as Daniel

  480. keeps looking,

  481. he sees a human

  482. and divine figure.

  483. He's divine

  484. because he's coming

  485. with the clouds of heaven.

  486. He's not taking Uber.

  487. He's,

  488. the divine figures,

  489. they come on clouds.

  490. That's how divine figures move.

  491. You see,

  492. it stands for the presence of God

  493. like at Mount Sinai.

  494. You see,

  495. this divine figure,

  496. he's also called

  497. one like a son of man.

  498. And in scripture,

  499. when you say

  500. the son of someone,

  501. you're actually talking about,

  502. the next word

  503. is actually about

  504. their character.

  505. So do you remember

  506. like James and John

  507. in the Bible?

  508. Jesus calls them

  509. sons of thunder.

  510. Now he's not talking

  511. about their bowel movements.

  512. He's talking

  513. about their fiery personality

  514. and character.

  515. And so when he says

  516. he's one like the son of man,

  517. what is he saying?

  518. He's saying

  519. this is the truly human one.

  520. This is the one

  521. that all humanity

  522. was supposed to be like.

  523. This is what you and I

  524. were created

  525. to image

  526. in our humanity.

  527. It's what we're supposed to be.

  528. And what's going on here?

  529. He says

  530. with the clouds of heaven,

  531. he is presented

  532. before the ancient of days.

  533. What's going on?

  534. This is a coronation ceremony.

  535. You know,

  536. my dad,

  537. he still remembers

  538. the coronation

  539. of Queen Elizabeth

  540. of England.

  541. And on that day,

  542. yeah, I know.

  543. It's a long time.

  544. But on that day,

  545. crowds line the street

  546. and she goes

  547. into Westminster Abbey

  548. in London

  549. and the Archbishop

  550. of Canterbury.

  551. She kneels before him

  552. and he puts a crown

  553. on her head

  554. and invests her

  555. with authority.

  556. Although the Queen

  557. of England

  558. doesn't have much authority.

  559. But that's the idea.

  560. It happened to King

  561. Nebuchadnezzar,

  562. Belshazzar,

  563. Darius.

  564. It's the same ceremony.

  565. But here,

  566. what's happening?

  567. The Son of Man

  568. is being crowned

  569. the king

  570. and he's not

  571. a temporary reign.

  572. It's not a reign

  573. like King Nebuchadnezzar.

  574. It's not a reign

  575. which finished

  576. like Darius

  577. or Belshazzar.

  578. It's not a reign

  579. like Queen Elizabeth

  580. who will at some point

  581. soon die

  582. and be replaced

  583. by somebody else.

  584. This king

  585. will never be replaced

  586. because he says

  587. he has an everlasting dominion.

  588. His dominion

  589. is everlasting.

  590. Shall not pass away.

  591. His kingdom

  592. is one that

  593. shall not be destroyed.

  594. He's always there

  595. no matter how strong

  596. the beast seems.

  597. And the question

  598. that comes out is

  599. who is this

  600. Son of Man?

  601. And you know

  602. we're kind of Christians

  603. so we kind of know Jesus.

  604. But actually

  605. this exalted

  606. divine king

  607. who is also

  608. the truly human one

  609. is actually

  610. an individual figure

  611. who also stands

  612. and represents

  613. a whole community

  614. of God's people.

  615. Do you notice

  616. in the interpretation

  617. it says

  618. the saints

  619. will receive the kingdom.

  620. Do you notice that?

  621. and that actually

  622. sounds like

  623. a kind of priest

  624. someone who stands

  625. on behalf

  626. of the people.

  627. Well Jesus

  628. after his arrest

  629. he stands

  630. before the high priest

  631. that individual

  632. who's supposed

  633. to stand before God

  634. and represent

  635. the people.

  636. And Jesus

  637. comes before him

  638. and as you

  639. see him

  640. coming before him

  641. you realize

  642. that this high priest

  643. is not a son of man

  644. but is actually

  645. more like a beast.

  646. By the way

  647. you know

  648. religious people

  649. can be beasts.

  650. So that's why

  651. actually

  652. don't put

  653. don't exalt

  654. any church leaders

  655. above what is due

  656. to them

  657. because they are not

  658. God.

  659. but as Jesus

  660. comes before

  661. the high priest

  662. who is seeking

  663. to crush him

  664. seeking to oppress him

  665. seeking to intimidate

  666. the innocent

  667. holy one

  668. he asks Jesus

  669. are you the son

  670. of God

  671. and Jesus says

  672. yeah

  673. yeah

  674. you can say that

  675. and then he goes

  676. this

  677. he says

  678. but I tell you

  679. from now on

  680. you will see

  681. the son of man

  682. seated at the right

  683. hand of power

  684. and coming

  685. on the clouds

  686. of heaven

  687. where's he got

  688. that from

  689. Daniel

  690. you see

  691. do you know

  692. what Jesus

  693. favorite title

  694. for himself is

  695. it's not

  696. son of God

  697. it's not

  698. Messiah

  699. it's the son

  700. of man

  701. it's everywhere

  702. and what is he

  703. saying

  704. he's saying

  705. my coronation

  706. is about

  707. to take place

  708. and how does

  709. the high priest

  710. respond

  711. he goes

  712. kill him

  713. and Jesus

  714. dies

  715. slain

  716. by the beast

  717. in fact

  718. it's a collaboration

  719. of human beasts

  720. all of us

  721. who are trying

  722. to assert our rule

  723. who try and keep

  724. our status

  725. who are out of

  726. jealousy

  727. out of pride

  728. out of fear

  729. of losing

  730. our own reputation

  731. turn and resist

  732. Jesus' rule

  733. that's what nails

  734. Jesus to the cross

  735. and it puts a crown

  736. of thorns

  737. on him

  738. we didn't expect

  739. that kind of

  740. coronation

  741. but right at that

  742. moment in the

  743. darkest hour

  744. who was truly

  745. on the throne

  746. God was

  747. the ancient of

  748. days was

  749. because he was

  750. executing his

  751. plan

  752. to destroy

  753. the power

  754. of beastly

  755. rule

  756. but also

  757. Jesus was

  758. dying for the

  759. very beasts

  760. who would

  761. execute him

  762. those people

  763. like you

  764. and me

  765. who reject

  766. his rule

  767. and he rises

  768. again and ascends

  769. and is seated

  770. at the right

  771. hand of God

  772. do you know

  773. why

  774. for many reasons

  775. but Daniel's

  776. going to tell you

  777. he died

  778. to give beasts

  779. back their

  780. humanity

  781. do you remember

  782. that first beast

  783. the lion

  784. with the wings

  785. who actually

  786. historically

  787. we think it's

  788. actually Nebuchadnezzar

  789. and what happens

  790. to him

  791. his wings get

  792. clipped

  793. he gets humbled

  794. and at the point

  795. of his humbling

  796. do you see what

  797. happens to him

  798. he's then

  799. given back

  800. his humanity

  801. you see this is

  802. what the gospel

  803. is all about

  804. this is why

  805. God calls us

  806. to repent

  807. and confess

  808. and to come

  809. before him

  810. from all of our

  811. beastliness

  812. it's not to try

  813. and be miserable

  814. repentance and

  815. confession is a way

  816. to learn how to be

  817. truly human

  818. because when

  819. Jesus is on the

  820. throne

  821. and we're

  822. worshipping him

  823. at the centre

  824. that's when we

  825. become fully

  826. who we were

  827. created to be

  828. and that's why

  829. God wants

  830. to create

  831. out of him

  832. that this new

  833. community of

  834. saints

  835. who receive

  836. his kingdom

  837. that in the

  838. midst of

  839. intimidation

  840. of fear

  841. we respond

  842. to beastliness

  843. not by being

  844. beasts ourselves

  845. you know actually

  846. how beasts

  847. respond to

  848. beasts

  849. we just end up

  850. trying to fight

  851. and being

  852. passive aggressive

  853. and doing all

  854. that other kind

  855. of stuff

  856. we try and

  857. force our way

  858. we get bitter

  859. or we just

  860. cower in fear

  861. but actually

  862. when you know

  863. that the son

  864. of man

  865. is the one

  866. who is giving

  867. us back our

  868. humanity

  869. what that does

  870. it fills us

  871. with love

  872. with kindness

  873. and truth

  874. that we're called

  875. to have godly

  876. courage to forgive

  877. to bless those

  878. who persecute us

  879. and to do

  880. what Jesus

  881. does

  882. because when we

  883. submit to him

  884. and surrender

  885. to him

  886. do you know

  887. what happens

  888. he begins to

  889. make us look

  890. more like him

  891. which makes

  892. us more

  893. human

  894. you know

  895. what the beast

  896. says

  897. he says

  898. I deserve

  899. better in life

  900. I'm entitled

  901. to some respect

  902. I should get

  903. my own way

  904. the beast

  905. says

  906. I came

  907. to be served

  908. not to serve

  909. but Jesus

  910. says

  911. the son of man

  912. did not come

  913. to be served

  914. but to serve

  915. and to give

  916. his life

  917. as a ransom

  918. for many

  919. including us

  920. here

  921. every one

  922. of us

  923. that is

  924. true humility

  925. that is

  926. true humanity

  927. a life

  928. laid down

  929. for God's

  930. kingdom

  931. to love

  932. and serve

  933. God

  934. and others

  935. but in a world

  936. that is

  937. filled with

  938. darkness

  939. and challenge

  940. where do you

  941. get the courage

  942. to be like

  943. that from

  944. where do you

  945. get that courage

  946. you know

  947. Nelson Mandela

  948. the famous

  949. South African

  950. activist

  951. he said this

  952. he said

  953. I learned

  954. that courage

  955. is not

  956. the absence

  957. of fear

  958. but the triumph

  959. over it

  960. the brave man

  961. is not he

  962. who does not

  963. feel afraid

  964. but he who

  965. conquers that

  966. fear

  967. that's absolutely

  968. right

  969. so just be like

  970. Daniel

  971. right

  972. you know

  973. he is the

  974. ultimate courageous

  975. guy

  976. goes into

  977. lion's den

  978. right

  979. but do you

  980. notice

  981. in verse 15

  982. and verse 28

  983. even this

  984. amazing

  985. courageous

  986. Daniel

  987. he is

  988. frightened

  989. he is

  990. alarmed

  991. he is

  992. anxious

  993. his courage

  994. has failed

  995. him

  996. why

  997. because Daniel

  998. doesn't know

  999. who this

  1000. son of man

  1001. is

  1002. godly courage

  1003. isn't the

  1004. loudest voice

  1005. in the room

  1006. it's not the most

  1007. confident personality

  1008. you can be brave

  1009. just to prove

  1010. yourself

  1011. godly courage

  1012. sees Jesus

  1013. as bigger

  1014. than whatever

  1015. beast you're

  1016. facing in your

  1017. life right now

  1018. he fills

  1019. your windscreen

  1020. why do we

  1021. get intimidated

  1022. and fear

  1023. people

  1024. or circumstances

  1025. around us

  1026. because it

  1027. feels like

  1028. our life

  1029. is in their

  1030. hands

  1031. it feels like

  1032. your boss

  1033. holds the key

  1034. to your career

  1035. it feels like

  1036. your kids

  1037. lives

  1038. are in the

  1039. hands of a

  1040. culture

  1041. that you

  1042. don't know

  1043. how to

  1044. fight against

  1045. sharing the

  1046. gospel

  1047. could lead to

  1048. rejection

  1049. and we feel

  1050. afraid

  1051. that that

  1052. might ruin

  1053. our lives

  1054. but whatever

  1055. the beast

  1056. tries to take

  1057. Jesus says

  1058. they can never

  1059. take

  1060. your soul

  1061. because he

  1062. says in this

  1063. world you'll have

  1064. trouble

  1065. but take

  1066. heart

  1067. I have

  1068. overcome

  1069. the world

  1070. why

  1071. because at

  1072. the moment

  1073. when it

  1074. looks like

  1075. death is

  1076. hardest

  1077. is the

  1078. moment

  1079. when Jesus

  1080. is bringing

  1081. resurrection

  1082. life

  1083. the moment

  1084. when you

  1085. feel the

  1086. pressure

  1087. of the world

  1088. against you

  1089. and you don't

  1090. know where to

  1091. look

  1092. is the moment

  1093. that when you

  1094. look up you

  1095. see the one

  1096. who is already

  1097. overcome

  1098. who has already

  1099. got the victory

  1100. and he's

  1101. taking you

  1102. through to

  1103. resurrection

  1104. glory

  1105. you know

  1106. someone

  1107. I chatted

  1108. with someone

  1109. in watermark

  1110. a little while

  1111. ago

  1112. and they had

  1113. their name

  1114. put forward

  1115. to lead the

  1116. the LGBT

  1117. initiative for

  1118. their company

  1119. and there was a

  1120. lot of pressure

  1121. on

  1122. boss said

  1123. this is a

  1124. great career

  1125. opportunity for

  1126. you

  1127. and there's

  1128. that pressure

  1129. between the

  1130. values of what

  1131. they felt like

  1132. God was calling

  1133. them to do

  1134. but also

  1135. the fear of

  1136. what's going to

  1137. happen

  1138. if I resist

  1139. saying no

  1140. could mean

  1141. they get fired

  1142. and they knew

  1143. that

  1144. and they felt

  1145. that

  1146. and they talked

  1147. to people in

  1148. the community

  1149. who prayed

  1150. who encouraged

  1151. them and they

  1152. went to their

  1153. boss and said

  1154. hey no I've

  1155. got other church

  1156. responsibilities

  1157. I can't do

  1158. it

  1159. and the boss

  1160. said

  1161. that's fine

  1162. that's fine

  1163. that's okay

  1164. you see God

  1165. shut the lion's

  1166. mouth at that

  1167. moment

  1168. but actually

  1169. what helped

  1170. them because

  1171. they said to

  1172. me you know

  1173. this is where

  1174. I know God

  1175. will provide

  1176. for me because

  1177. I know that

  1178. he's where my

  1179. life is found

  1180. that's how

  1181. you can stand

  1182. I have another

  1183. friend who was

  1184. constantly battered

  1185. by their family

  1186. members just

  1187. always commenting

  1188. on their

  1189. appearance and

  1190. weight

  1191. and it was

  1192. crushing to

  1193. them

  1194. they lived under

  1195. this fearing

  1196. feeling of

  1197. will I ever

  1198. be loved

  1199. will I ever

  1200. find value

  1201. and so they

  1202. were tempted

  1203. to look

  1204. anywhere

  1205. for somebody

  1206. who would

  1207. just validate

  1208. them

  1209. but as

  1210. they began

  1211. to share

  1212. in community

  1213. and as

  1214. they learned

  1215. the gospel

  1216. which tells

  1217. them that

  1218. their identity

  1219. is not found

  1220. in their

  1221. appearance

  1222. or what

  1223. anybody else

  1224. tells you

  1225. but it's

  1226. found in

  1227. what the

  1228. son of

  1229. God

  1230. the son

  1231. of man

  1232. has done

  1233. for you

  1234. that you

  1235. are loved

  1236. that you

  1237. are saved

  1238. that you

  1239. are forgiven

  1240. that you

  1241. are secure

  1242. that you

  1243. belong

  1244. that the

  1245. risen

  1246. crushed

  1247. ascended

  1248. Christ

  1249. has done

  1250. everything

  1251. so that

  1252. you can

  1253. be his

  1254. and his

  1255. love will

  1256. never be

  1257. taken away

  1258. that he

  1259. says to us

  1260. do not fear

  1261. little flock

  1262. because he's

  1263. been pleased

  1264. to give you

  1265. the kingdom

  1266. do you know

  1267. what it

  1268. meant

  1269. for them

  1270. they still

  1271. wrestled

  1272. and battled

  1273. whenever they

  1274. met family

  1275. members

  1276. but they

  1277. had this

  1278. new

  1279. courage

  1280. and confidence

  1281. to not let

  1282. it crush

  1283. them

  1284. because Jesus

  1285. became bigger

  1286. in their

  1287. windscreen

  1288. than any

  1289. other

  1290. beasts

  1291. and they

  1292. experienced

  1293. the resurrection

  1294. life of

  1295. Jesus

  1296. giving them

  1297. a new

  1298. confidence

  1299. to walk

  1300. into the

  1301. world

  1302. knowing

  1303. that he

  1304. is both

  1305. the judge

  1306. on the

  1307. throne

  1308. but he's

  1309. also the

  1310. savior

  1311. who's

  1312. with us

  1313. and the

  1314. one

  1315. who's

  1316. risen

  1317. from the

  1318. grave

  1319. that

  1320. is what

  1321. Daniel

  1322. is about

  1323. I'm going

  1324. to stop

  1325. here

  1326. but I

  1327. don't

  1328. know

  1329. if you

  1330. realize

  1331. this

  1332. but actually

  1333. Daniel

  1334. 12

  1335. which we're

  1336. not going

  1337. to talk

  1338. about

  1339. it ends

  1340. with

  1341. resurrection

  1342. let me

  1343. just read

  1344. this to

  1345. you

  1346. and many

  1347. who sleep

  1348. in the

  1349. dust

  1350. of the

  1351. earth

  1352. shall

  1353. awake

  1354. some

  1355. to

  1356. everlasting

  1357. life

  1358. and some

  1359. to shame

  1360. and everlasting

  1361. contempt

  1362. that's about

  1363. which kingdom

  1364. you're going to

  1365. be part of

1366. and those who are wise who choose to submit to the son of man

1367. shall shine like the brightness of the sky above

1368. and those who turn many to righteousness

  1369. like the stars forever.

1370. That's the promise of everyone who puts their trust

1371. and who is in the son of man

1372. and refuses to submit to the beast.

1373. I want us to just close by thinking

1374. how are you going to respond right now, right today?

1375. Where's the beast in your life?

1376. Where's the things where you feel intimidated and afraid?

1377. Where are the areas where,

1378. how big is Jesus in your windscreen right now?

1379. And I have on the screen just three ways

1380. that actually you can respond in this moment.

1381. We're going to take communion in a few minutes.

1382. But I want you to respond in one of three ways.

1383. Sometimes some of you may just have to praise God

1384. and thank him that he truly is on the throne.

1385. When you look at the news,

1386. when you look at the things that are going on,

1387. you realize you can praise and thank him.

1388. That we don't have to stand in fear.

1389. Some of us have to actually repent and confess

1390. because there are areas where maybe we have actually,

1391. we don't realize the beastliness in us

1392. or we've actually lived under that intimidation and fear

1393. and we've just given in

1394. because we fail to see who Jesus truly is in our life.

1395. Some of us, God is calling you,

1396. you're in situations where you know God is calling you to respond

1397. and you're struggling to trust him

  1398. because you feel afraid.

1399. And God is going to call you right now

1400. to respond in obedience and trust.

1401. So I want you just to take a minute by yourself

  1402. and just to respond,

1403. which of those three ways is God calling you to respond right now?

  1404. God bless you.
