  1. Today the scripture reading comes from Romans chapter 11 and 12.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. Starting in chapter 11, verse 33, we read,

  4. O the death of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!

  5. How unsearchable are his judgments, and how incruitable in his ways!

  6. For who has known the might of the Lord, or who has been his counselor,

  7. or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?

  8. For from him, and through him, and to him are all things.

  9. To him be glory forever. Amen.

  10. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,

  11. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  12. holy and acceptable to God,

  13. which is your spiritual worship.

  14. This is the word of God.

  15. Great.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you, Sherman.

  18. We've got a short passage today compared to Daniel,

  19. so well done for reading that.

  20. Let me just pray for us as we get into God's word this morning.

  21. Father, I just thank you that actually as we come before you

  22. and we get in your word this morning,

  23. this is such an incredible passage,

  24. and I know it's a passage where many of us who've been in church

  25. have heard this before,

  26. but, Lord, we want our hearts not just to check out

  27. because we've heard something before,

  28. but we want you to warm our hearts.

  29. We want you to melt our hearts.

  30. We want you to change our hearts

  31. so that actually as we go out this week into the rest of our lives,

  32. Lord, that we live our lives as an offering of worship to you.

  33. Lord, I pray even as I speak, Lord,

  34. would my lips be worshiped to you?

  35. Nothing about me, Lord, but about you.

  36. Would as we listen, Lord,

  37. would it be worshiped to you?

  38. Would you open our ears so that we want to honor you

  39. in the way that we hear and respond?

  40. And I pray, Lord,

  41. that you would just be with us right now.

  42. By your Holy Spirit, we pray.

  43. In Jesus' name.

  44. Amen.

  45. Great.

  46. Welcome, everyone.

  47. My name's Chris.

  48. If you don't know me,

  49. I'm one of the leaders at Watermark.

  50. Today, Kevin's actually preaching at another church,

  51. Faith Community Church,

  52. so you can check out with him.

  53. Actually, that's one of the things we really believe God has us here as a church,

  54. is not just to be here for ourselves,

  55. but also to be a blessing in the city.

  56. And so that's why Kevin's going and speaking at another place this morning.

  57. We're starting a new series in the book of Romans.

  58. Let me start off by saying I was talking actually just last week to a cafe owner,

  59. and she said to me,

  60. you know, all religions are basically the same, aren't they?

  61. You know, it's just about,

  62. it doesn't kind of matter what you believe,

  63. it's really all about just being good, isn't it?

  64. So as long as you're a nice person and kind of help grannies across the road,

  65. it's great.

  66. It doesn't matter what you believe.

  67. And it sounded plausible,

  68. except for the fact that she had missed the crucial fact that,

  69. though what you do is really important,

  70. the why behind the what is also crucial,

  71. in fact, even more important.

  72. Because I can be nice to you just to manipulate you.

  73. I can be nice to you to feel better about myself.

  74. But the passage in Romans 12 that we're going to be looking at,

  75. and we're going to spend a few weeks just going through this extraordinary passage in Scripture,

  76. it's amazing.

  77. I encourage you all to be reading it in between.

  78. It's a passage which calls us not just to be nice people,

  79. it calls us to be people of radical love and sacrifice.

  80. It calls us to be a community,

  81. which is so beautiful because it's shaped entirely by Jesus and his love for us.

  82. And we're going to focus,

  83. really zoom down into the first verse of this passage today,

  84. which is really the foundation for everything else that Paul is going to say in Romans 12.

  85. Because if you don't get this part of the verse,

  86. everything else that he's going to call us to is going to be useless,

  87. because it's going to be a what without a why.

  88. It's going to be morality without the motivating power to sustain it.

  89. You know, I remember when I was a teenager,

  90. I mean, my friend, we went to climb the tallest mountain in the UK called Ben Nevis.

  91. And we wanted to do it because it was the tallest mountain.

  92. And so we got halfway up,

  93. but we realized that actually it's eight hours of just monotony.

  94. It's the most boring mountain ever in the world.

  95. And halfway up, my friend and I, we were just exhausted.

  96. We were kind of like, I can't bother to do this any longer.

  97. We just sat down, we stopped, we looked at each other and go,

  98. I can't be bothered.

  99. And then, this really hot girl walked past us racing up the mountain.

  100. And do you know what happened?

  101. You have never seen two 16-year-olds climb Ben Nevis as quickly as we did.

  102. Because we found our why.

  103. Before, we thought we had a why, but it was just in our heads.

  104. But then we had a why which captured our hearts at that moment.

  105. And though that's a stupid story,

  106. if we're going to live radical lives,

  107. loving Jesus as he calls us to,

  108. it's tough work.

  109. It's like climbing a mountain.

  110. And we're going to need a greater why

  111. than all the other whys that the society around us preaches to us.

  112. We're going to need heart-motivating rocket fuel.

  113. There we go, the spirit is working.

  114. Excuse me.

  115. We're going to need heart-motivating rocket fuel

  116. to really enable us to live this kind of life.

  117. Excuse me, I'm going to put this down here.

  118. So we're going to look through this passage,

  119. this verse,

  120. and I've just got two things that I'm going to say.

  121. One is about give me your why.

  122. And the second is give me your all.

  123. Okay?

  124. So just have the bulletin open in front of you.

  125. And we're going to look through this.

  126. Because here is the verse.

  127. It says,

  128. I appeal to you,

  129. therefore, brothers,

  130. by the mercies of God,

  131. present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  132. holy and acceptable to God.

  133. He says,

  134. therefore,

  135. which is actually,

  136. he means in the light of everything that I've said

  137. in chapters 1 through to 11.

  138. And then he summarizes

  139. the why behind the what

  140. that he's going to go into.

  141. And he says,

  142. well, the NIV translation says,

  143. in view,

  144. and actually our title says,

  145. in view of God's mercy.

  146. But that's actually only half right.

  147. Because in view of means kind of think about it

  148. and then go ahead and do it.

  149. Maybe out of obligation,

  150. maybe out of guilt,

  151. but just do it.

  152. That's not what he's saying here.

  153. The actual Greek says,

  154. by the mercies of God.

  155. Because what by means is,

  156. it means having thought about it,

  157. having allowed it to marinate

  158. and soak in your heart,

  159. and allowing it to empower

  160. and energize you.

  161. These mercies of God

  162. then live radical lives after that.

  163. And do you notice,

  164. it's actually not the mercy of God,

  165. it's the mercies of God in Greek,

  166. which means you try counting how many mercies there are.

  167. They're innumerable.

  168. And so what I'm going to do is,

  169. I'm going to just go through a few

  170. from the book of Romans,

  171. from chapters 1 to 11,

  172. of some of the mercies of God.

  173. You see, chapter 1,

  174. Paul says,

  175. I'm not ashamed of the gospel,

  176. because it's the power of God for salvation,

  177. for everyone who believes.

  178. And in it,

  179. the righteousness of God is revealed.

  180. The restoring,

  181. the saving,

  182. the healing,

  183. the renewing power of God is revealed.

  184. The gospel,

  185. the mercies of God,

  186. are not about what we do for God,

  187. it's about what God has done for us.

  188. It's about God's solution to our problem.

  189. And so as the Romans carries on,

  190. he says,

  191. our problem is that though we knew God,

  192. we didn't glorify Him,

  193. or honor Him in our lives.

  194. We walked out on Him.

  195. We took the glorious symphony of God's creation,

  196. in all its complexity,

  197. all its beauty and wonder,

  198. and we scrubbed out the name of the composer,

  199. which was God,

  200. and we tried to put our own names in there.

  201. And then maybe we ended up worshipping the music stand,

  202. or something we'd created,

  203. an idol,

  204. instead of the one who deserved all the honor.

  205. And it says we became jealous,

  206. selfish,

  207. unkind,

  208. judgmental,

  209. and we justified it all.

  210. Anybody like that?

  211. One or two.

  212. And he says,

  213. religion couldn't help us,

  214. morality couldn't help us,

  215. because we failed even our own standards.

  216. And he says,

  217. all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  218. And he says,

  219. because of that,

  220. the wages of sin is death.

  221. We were under God's judgment,

  222. under His wrath,

  223. condemned.

  224. No defense at all.

  225. And then he says,

  226. but.

  227. But God showed His great love for us,

  228. in that while we were still sinners,

  229. while we were powerless,

  230. while we had nothing in our hands,

  231. Christ died and rose for us.

  232. He took our punishment on the cross.

  233. He freed us from the penalty of sin.

  234. Instead of being His enemies through Jesus,

  235. we're reconciled.

  236. We've got peace with the Creator of the universe.

  237. He said,

  238. there's now no condemnation for any of us in Christ.

  239. He says,

  240. He doesn't just forgive us,

  241. doesn't just wipe the slate clean.

  242. He credits us with the gift of righteousness.

  243. We have right standing before God.

  244. And we can reign in the new life that He gives to us today.

  245. And He says,

  246. we have access into the very presence of this holy, awesome God.

  247. And He calls us His adopted, beloved children.

  248. And by Him we can cry,

  249. Abba, Father.

  250. Have you thought how amazing that is?

  251. There's no other religion which says,

  252. the God who created everything,

  253. the galaxies,

  254. the Milky Way,

  255. you can call Him Dad.

  256. And He loves to hear your voice.

  257. And He says,

  258. there is nothing in all creation

  259. that will ever separate you,

  260. if you're in Christ,

  261. from the ever doting,

  262. ever watching,

  263. ever caring,

  264. ever passionate love of God for you.

  265. Nothing.

  266. Because we're united to Him.

  267. The mercies of God.

  268. But then He says,

  269. there's more.

  270. He says,

  271. God works through every circumstance,

  272. you go through for your good.

  273. He's going to conform us to be more like Jesus,

  274. to be glorious image bearers,

  275. the beautiful people we were made to be.

  276. He is restoring us.

  277. And He says,

  278. even though we groan in this world,

  279. He will,

  280. He's not just setting us free from the penalty of sin,

  281. but also the power of sin.

  282. He fills us with the Holy Spirit's presence within us.

  283. He doesn't leave us slaves to fear and anxiety.

  284. But the Spirit reminds you,

  285. you are a child of God.

  286. Remember that.

  287. He lifts up when we just don't,

  288. we feel so weak,

  289. and we don't even know how to pray.

  290. He says,

  291. He helps us in our weakness,

  292. and He intercedes for us,

  293. and He lifts our prayers to the throne of heaven.

  294. And because of Him,

  295. you have resurrection power inside of you

  296. to say no to your selfish desires,

  297. and to choose to live lovingly,

  298. obediently,

  299. and courageously with His power.

  300. And in the groaning of the world,

  301. He will not just move the penalty of sin,

  302. not just the power of sin,

  303. but also He removed the presence of sin.

  304. Because He's giving you an unshakable future,

  305. a hope that's never going to disappoint you.

  306. You become heirs of the estate of heaven and earth.

  307. You're co-heirs with Jesus,

  308. will reign with Him.

  309. You're more than a conqueror

  310. through Him who's loved you.

  311. And your body,

  312. which right now may get allergies,

  313. and asthma,

  314. and high blood pressure,

  315. will be healed and transformed

  316. to a place where we'll go,

  317. well, what do we call that back then?

  318. Was it cancer?

  319. Because He will have brought

  320. this abundant new creation in life,

  321. and you and I will be there

  322. if you've trusted in Christ.

  323. And we did nothing to deserve it.

  324. Nothing in our hands.

  325. It's purely the gracious generosity of a God

  326. that we go,

  327. why on earth would you do that?

  328. And He says,

  329. because I love you.

  330. And we receive it all as an open gift

  331. with empty hands,

  332. the empty hands of faith.

  333. And I've only just begun to start talking about

  334. the mercies of God.

  335. Because I could talk about the fact

  336. that His mercies are new every single day.

  337. And that even though I so often forget about His mercies,

  338. He still continues to be merciful to me.

  339. Even today.

  340. How often do we rehearse the mercies of God?

  341. And you know,

  342. the amazing thing of this is that

  343. Paul,

  344. he's a brain.

  345. He knows all this doctrine.

  346. And you know,

  347. people who have real intelligence,

  348. often they're great at academics,

  349. but they're cold a little bit

  350. in the way that they're just clinical.

  351. But actually,

  352. he doesn't get tired of this

  353. because in chapter 11,

  354. he ends the whole of chapters 1 to 11

  355. with this splurge of uncontrolled praise.

  356. He goes,

  357. oh, the depths of the riches of the wisdom

  358. and the knowledge of God.

  359. How unsearchable and how inscrutable

  360. are His ways and His judgments.

  361. He's going,

  362. wow,

  363. I can't get my head around this.

  364. I don't even have the words to say.

  365. Why is Paul so excited about this?

  366. This isn't theory for Paul.

  367. For some of us,

  368. that can be nice.

  369. That's nice theory.

  370. This is not theory

  371. because his life is the testimony

  372. to these mercies.

  373. You know,

  374. 1 Timothy 1,

  375. he says,

  376. formerly I was a blasphemer,

  377. a persecutor,

  378. an insolent opponent.

  379. But I received mercy

  380. and the grace of our Lord

  381. overflowed to me,

  382. he says.

  383. You know,

  384. this is personal.

  385. And you know,

  386. actually,

  387. this will only make you sing

  388. when you realize

  389. how much you need it.

  390. Until God runs a 10-ton truck

  391. over your life

  392. to the place where you go,

  393. wow,

  394. I need mercy,

  395. you will not realize

  396. that the power and the joy

  397. that there is

  398. in the mercies of God.

  399. You know,

  400. I knew a guy,

  401. I knew of a guy who,

  402. his dad

  403. was always working

  404. for the family.

  405. And as a son,

  406. he was grateful

  407. that he paid his college fees

  408. and he was dutiful,

  409. he was there on birthdays

  410. and Father's Day

  411. doing the kind of right thing.

  412. But emotionally,

  413. he was not really invested.

  414. He was,

  415. he was just,

  416. you know,

  417. he invested in a whole

  418. load of other stuff.

  419. He took his dad

  420. quite for granted.

  421. And you know,

  422. they had a,

  423. just a dutiful relationship.

  424. But then one day,

  425. his mom came to him

  426. and said to him,

  427. do you realize

  428. why your dad

  429. took so many multiple jobs

  430. and was busy all the time?

  431. It's because he had to pay off

  432. the debts

  433. for the treatment

  434. that saved your life

  435. when you were a kid.

  436. And actually,

  437. you meant the time

  438. that he's actually spent with you,

  439. do you realize

  440. he was actually sacrificing

  441. the sleep

  442. that he should have gotten.

  443. Actually,

  444. it's affected his health massively.

  445. And he didn't want you

  446. to know about this

  447. because

  448. he didn't want you

  449. to feel guilty.

  450. And when the son,

  451. the son heard this,

  452. do you know what it did?

  453. It melted his heart.

  454. He broke down.

  455. He wept at how cold

  456. he could have been

  457. towards his father.

  458. And it changed him

  459. to determine

  460. to invest his life

  461. in rebuilding

  462. his relationship

  463. with his dad.

  464. You know,

  465. Jesus isn't just

  466. a busy, absent father.

  467. He's an ever-present father.

  468. But if you think

  469. that Jesus is just,

  470. you know,

  471. the greatest mercy

  472. that you have from him

  473. is he gave you a good job.

  474. Or he, you know,

  475. helped you to get,

  476. I answer a prayer

  477. that you had.

  478. If that's the extent

  479. that you think

  480. his mercies go to,

  481. then you'll be grateful.

  482. You'll go,

  483. well, thanks, Jesus.

  484. That's nice.

  485. I'm forgiven.

  486. Maybe here's $10

  487. in the offering for you.

  488. Thank you for dying for me.

  489. Now, what price

  490. were the Tesla stocks

  491. at the moment?

  492. Because you might give

  493. your duty,

  494. but you won't give

  495. your heart

  496. until you realize

  497. the depth

  498. of the sacrifice

  499. for you

  500. that he went to.

  501. In fact,

  502. to just give him

  503. your duty

  504. is actually quite offensive,

  505. right?

  506. After all he's done.

  507. But if you know

  508. that he sacrificed

  509. everything for you,

  510. the very breath

  511. that you have right now

  512. is a gift from him.

  513. That if it wasn't

  514. for his mercy,

  515. you would be

  516. in a way worse place

  517. than you are right now.

  518. And I know that

  519. for myself.

  520. Then that changes

  521. everything.

  522. You found your why.

  523. You found

  524. the way

  525. that you can be

  526. propelled

  527. to really love

  528. and to live for him.

  529. Do you know

  530. your need

  531. for his mercies?

  532. Do you know

  533. just how incredible

  534. much he loves you?

  535. Because if you do,

  536. Paul then appeals

  537. to you

  538. and to us

  539. with this why

  540. to respond.

  541. And he says,

  542. respond

  543. with spiritual worship.

  544. And that word

  545. spiritual

  546. means

  547. the only

  548. logical,

  549. reasonable,

  550. not external duty,

  551. but internally

  552. motivated

  553. and fueled

  554. from the inside

  555. response

  556. is worship

  557. which says,

  558. I give you

  559. my all,

  560. Jesus.

  561. He's given you

  562. his why

  563. and now he tells you,

  564. give me

  565. your all.

  566. That's the second point.

  567. And this music stand

  568. is getting lower

  569. and lower.

  570. Or I'm getting

  571. shorter and shorter,

  572. I'm not sure.

  573. Paul says,

  574. by the mercies

  575. of God,

  576. what should you do?

  577. Present

  578. your bodies

  579. as a living

  580. sacrifice,

  581. holy

  582. and acceptable

  583. to God,

  584. which is,

  585. this is,

  586. your spiritual

  587. worship.

  588. worship.

  589. You see,

  590. this is the language

  591. of the Old Testament,

  592. of Old Testament

  593. worship,

  594. where you take a bull

  595. or a lamb

  596. or some animal

  597. and you'd offer it

  598. on the altar

  599. and you'd slit

  600. its throat

  601. and it would die

  602. as a substitute

  603. for the worshipers.

  604. And it was a costly

  605. sacrifice.

  606. It was brought

  607. before God

  608. to bring

  609. that offering

  610. but actually

  611. you would only

  612. bring the best.

  613. Your animals

  614. were your possessions,

  615. your wealth.

  616. You know,

  617. you didn't bring

  618. a sheep with acne.

  619. You had to be

  620. spotless.

  621. And there were

  622. three types

  623. of animal sacrifice.

  624. There were sin offering,

  625. sin and guilt offerings,

  626. there were burnt offerings

  627. and there were

  628. fellowship offerings.

  629. But the guilt

  630. and the sin offerings

  631. and the fellowship offerings,

  632. the priest could eat

  633. some of it.

  634. But the burnt offering,

  635. you brought it all

  636. and you burnt it all

  637. in front of you.

  638. There was nothing left.

  639. You didn't say,

  640. oh,

  641. I'll just take a thigh

  642. from that afterwards

  643. once it's cooked.

  644. You didn't do that.

  645. It was totally consumed

  646. in front of you.

  647. Why?

  648. Because what you are saying

  649. is,

  650. this is my total,

  651. utter,

  652. no holds barred,

  653. consecration

  654. and devotion

  655. to you, God.

  656. This is my worship

  657. for you.

  658. And what Paul

  659. is saying here,

  660. he says,

  661. Jesus has done away

  662. with the animal sacrifice,

  663. but do you know

  664. where is the sacrifice now?

  665. You're the sacrifice.

  666. But you're not

  667. a dead one.

  668. You're a living one.

  669. You're not a sacrifice

  670. for the sin offering.

  671. This is the burnt offering

  672. of saying,

  673. where my day-to-day life is,

  674. thank you,

  675. we need a repair man.

  676. My day-to-day,

  677. moment-by-moment life

  678. is an offering

  679. of responsive worship

  680. to the God

  681. who's given everything for me.

  682. It's a heart

  683. that's captivated

  684. by his mercies.

  685. Because you know

  686. what worship is?

  687. His worship

  688. is giving

  689. the highest value,

  690. the highest worth,

  691. the highest priority

  692. to what you think

  693. is most valuable,

  694. is worth the most.

  695. And so he's saying,

  696. is Jesus

  697. the most precious thing

  698. to you?

  699. Is he?

  700. Can you say,

  701. Jesus,

  702. I want to surrender

  703. my all to you?

  704. And notice he doesn't say

  705. actually just,

  706. bring your spiritual life,

  707. bring your church life,

  708. bring your Bible studies

  709. to me.

  710. He doesn't say that.

  711. He says,

  712. present your bodies,

  713. your lips,

  714. your arms,

  715. your mouth,

  716. your tongue,

  717. your every part of you,

  718. your sexuality

  719. to God.

  720. Verse 2

  721. is going to talk

  722. about the mind.

  723. And we'll look at that

  724. next week.

  725. But here he's saying,

  726. true worship

  727. is not just singing

  728. some songs on a Sunday.

  729. It's not even just

  730. confessing some sins

  731. from your heart,

  732. although those are worship.

  733. It's every single aspect

  734. of your life.

  735. Everything.

  736. One guy,

  737. commentator,

  738. William Barclay,

  739. said this,

  740. we might say,

  741. I'm going to church

  742. to worship God.

  743. But we should also

  744. be able to say,

  745. I'm going to the factory,

  746. the shop,

  747. the office,

  748. the school,

  749. the garage,

  750. the mine,

  751. not many mines in Hong Kong,

  752. the shipyard,

  753. the field,

  754. the cow ship,

  755. definitely not many of those,

  756. the garden,

  757. to worship God.

  758. You're going,

  759. I'm going to change nappies

  760. and send emails

  761. and have conversations

  762. and plan vacations

  763. and have sex

  764. with my spouse,

  765. all for the glory

  766. and honour of God.

  767. Every part.

  768. Because he says,

  769. if you've got your why,

  770. and if your why

  771. is not just here,

  772. it's come down here,

  773. then this offering

  774. of what you present

  775. to God,

  776. it's holy

  777. and acceptable.

  778. You know,

  779. in the Old Testament,

  780. God doesn't accept

  781. any old sacrifice.

  782. It had to be perfect.

  783. He won't accept

  784. an imperfect sacrifice.

  785. You know,

  786. he won't accept

  787. a sacrifice

  788. from somebody

  789. who isn't a believer

  790. in him.

  791. But the gospel says

  792. that imperfect people

  793. like you and me

  794. are made acceptable

  795. and holy sacrifices.

  796. Because in Jesus,

  797. God doesn't look at you

  798. like we look at us

  799. or like other people

  800. look at us.

  801. We go,

  802. but can't you see

  803. all the kind of things

  804. I do wrong?

  805. And God says,

  806. yeah, I know.

  807. But in Christ,

  808. I have cleansed you.

  809. I see you

  810. with my righteousness,

  811. holy,

  812. spotless,

  813. acceptable,

  814. pleasing.

  815. Your sacrifice

  816. delights his heart.

  817. Isn't that amazing?

  818. Some of you

  819. are not amazed,

  820. but I think

  821. it's amazing.

  822. So what does it mean

  823. for all of your life

  824. to be worshipped?

  825. Well,

  826. there's a parallel passage

  827. in Romans 6

  828. which says this.

  829. It says,

  830. don't present

  831. your members,

  832. that means

  833. your body parts,

  834. your arms,

  835. your legs,

  836. all those things,

  837. to sin

  838. as instruments

  839. for unrighteousness.

  840. But present yourselves

  841. to God

  842. as those who have been

  843. brought from death

  844. to life.

  845. You're alive,

  846. you're living.

  847. That's what he's saying,

  848. a living sacrifice.

  849. And you're members

  850. to God

  851. as instruments

  852. for righteousness.

  853. What is he saying?

  854. He's actually saying

  855. you are always

  856. presenting your body

  857. to something.

  858. You are always

  859. worshipping something

  860. every day.

  861. It's not a matter,

  862. a choice of

  863. whether you worship

  864. or not,

  865. but who or what

  866. you will worship.

  867. And so,

  868. what you will do

  869. with your lips

  870. and where you are

  871. focused with your eyes

  872. and your ears

  873. is where you will

  874. lay those down

  875. on the altar

  876. of worship

  877. to that thing.

  878. You know,

  879. the reason we present

  880. our bodies

  881. to pornography,

  882. the reason we present

  883. our bodies

  884. to anger

  885. and shouting

  886. and all the other things

  887. is because

  888. we are worshipping

  889. something other than God

  890. and we've lost sight

  891. of the mercies

  892. of God towards us.

  893. You know,

  894. every morning

  895. the first thing

  896. some of us do

  897. is present

  898. our bodies

  899. to our phones,

  900. to Facebook,

  901. to the news,

  902. to WhatsApp

  903. because we worship

  904. being up to date.

  905. We fear

  906. missing out.

  907. But you know,

  908. one of the things

  909. I've started trying

  910. to do

  911. as a habit

  912. in my heart

  913. and my life

  914. is to start

  915. my day

  916. praying a prayer

  917. that author

  918. Elizabeth Elliot

  919. prays

  920. to actually offer

  921. every single day

  922. and here's

  923. what she says

  924. her prayers

  925. loving Lord

  926. and heavenly Father

  927. I offer today

  928. all that I am

  929. that means I'm a father

  930. I'm a son

  931. I'm a colleague

  932. I'm a friend

  933. whatever you are

  934. all that I have

  935. my phone

  936. my laptop

  937. all the things

  938. that you have given me

  939. my flat

  940. that all that I do

  941. that project

  942. that I've got

  943. right now

  944. this sermon

  945. that I'm writing

  946. whatever email

  947. you're sending

  948. and all that I suffer

  949. my struggles

  950. the pains

  951. that I'm going to

  952. go through today

  953. to be yours today

  954. and yours forever

  955. isn't that an amazing prayer?

  956. I want to be

  957. a living sacrifice

  958. to you

  959. but you see

  960. there's a choice

  961. because you'll not

  962. find your why

  963. to change

  964. and do these kind of things

  965. by me just telling you

  966. okay

  967. just pray

  968. before you

  969. first thing you do

  970. in the morning

  971. before you're looking

  972. at the phone

  973. okay

  974. if I say that

  975. I can guarantee

  976. tomorrow morning

  977. none of you

  978. will be praying

  979. that prayer

  980. but what do we need

  981. to do

  982. we need to rehearse

  983. the mercies of God

  984. towards us

  985. personally

  986. so that actually

  987. it begins to melt

  988. your heart

  989. so you make decisions

  990. and go

  991. God I want to

  992. put that in my diary

  993. I want to put that

  994. in my calendar

  995. I want to change

  996. my life

  997. and you're saying

  998. God

  999. change my heart

  1000. so that actually

  1001. these mercies

  1002. are not just here

  1003. but are down here

  1004. because sometimes

  1005. we forget

  1006. right

  1007. and so here's

  1008. what's at stake

  1009. you know

  1010. it's possible

  1011. to have been

  1012. a Christian

  1013. at one point

  1014. in your life

  1015. and at one point

  1016. said I'm going

  1017. I'm putting my life

  1018. down on the altar

  1019. but it's possible

  1020. over time

  1021. to be a Christian

  1022. and not enjoy Jesus

  1023. you know that

  1024. because you remember

  1025. that sin and guilt

  1026. offering was about

  1027. atonement

  1028. Jesus has paid

  1029. the price

  1030. there is no more

  1031. sin and guilt

  1032. offering

  1033. you know

  1034. but there was also

  1035. that fellowship

  1036. offering

  1037. which was about

  1038. enjoyment of God

  1039. and communion

  1040. with him

  1041. but you know

1042. the way that you get

  1043. from the atoning

  1044. sacrifice

  1045. to the enjoyment

  1046. comes through

  1047. the burnt offering

  1048. it comes

  1049. through that place

  1050. of sacrifice

1051. of getting on the altar

  1052. and willing to stay

  1053. on the altar

  1054. and saying

  1055. God take me

  1056. I don't know

  1057. where this is going

  1058. but take me

  1059. and it's only there

  1060. that actually

  1061. you'll really see

  1062. that the joy

  1063. and the mercies

  1064. of God

  1065. will become

  1066. not just a theory

  1067. but actually

  1068. they'll become

  1069. even richer

  1070. in your life

  1071. and you'll experience

  1072. them more deeply

  1073. which will then

  1074. motivate you more

  1075. to want to offer

  1076. more of your life

  1077. to him

  1078. let me make this

  1079. practical

  1080. by giving you

  1081. four characters

  1082. I could do

  1083. many many more

  1084. but these are

  1085. characters that

  1086. over my time

  1087. in church

  1088. I've just

  1089. seen

  1090. different people

  1091. in these categories

  1092. and for what it

  1093. has meant

  1094. for them

1095. to get on the altar

  1096. so I'm going to

  1097. give you

  1098. four different people

  1099. I'm going to

  1100. give you

  1101. feelings

  1102. Felicia

  1103. feelings

  1104. Felicia

  1105. her whole life

  1106. is presented

  1107. as an act

  1108. of worship

  1109. to her feelings

  1110. if she feels

  1111. a little tired

  1112. she cancels

  1113. on CG

  1114. sundial service

  1115. or any of her

  1116. commitments

  1117. if something else

  1118. comes up

  1119. that makes her

  1120. feel better

  1121. she serves

  1122. when she feels

  1123. in the mood

  1124. but not when

  1125. she doesn't

  1126. she lives

  1127. for the instant

  1128. gratification

  1129. of her feelings

  1130. whether that's

  1131. food

  1132. or YouTube

  1133. or other

  1134. things

  1135. and the

  1136. mercies

  1137. of God

  1138. come to

  1139. feelings

  1140. Felicia

  1141. and say

  1142. Jesus

  1143. didn't lay

  1144. down his

  1145. life

  1146. because he

  1147. felt like

  1148. it

  1149. he laid

  1150. down his

  1151. life

  1152. because he

  1153. loved

  1154. you

  1155. and so

  1156. he calls

  1157. you

  1158. as an

  1159. act of

  1160. worship

  1161. to lay

  1162. your feelings

  1163. on the

  1164. altar

  1165. to surrender

  1166. them

  1167. and to

  1168. find

  1169. that as

  1170. you keep

  1171. your

  1172. commitments

  1173. as you

  1174. persevere

  1175. in things

  1176. you find

  1177. difficult

  1178. to do

  1179. you'll

  1180. discover

  1181. that his

  1182. mercies

  1183. lead to

  1184. way more

  1185. joy

  1186. than

  1187. binging

  1188. on YouTube

  1189. ever does

  1190. because his

  1191. mercies

  1192. are for

  1193. your good

  1194. even when

  1195. in the

  1196. short term

  1197. it doesn't

  1198. feel like

  1199. it

  1200. feelings

  1201. Felicia

  1202. then there's

  1203. Burden Barry

  1204. okay

  1205. Burden Barry

  1206. used to be

  1207. on fire

  1208. for God

  1209. back in

  1210. uni

  1211. but he's

  1212. grown jaded

  1213. disillusioned

  1214. distracted

  1215. and he's

  1216. taken his

  1217. life off

  1218. the altar

  1219. you're here

  1220. in body

  1221. but your

  1222. mind is on

  1223. your deadlines

  1224. is on your

  1225. kids education

  1226. is on a

  1227. whole lot

  1228. of other

  1229. things

  1230. even on

  1231. the grievances

  1232. and the

  1233. pains that

  1234. you have

  1235. in your

  1236. life

  1237. grievances

  1238. with God

  1239. grievances

  1240. with your

  1241. spouse

  1242. grievances

  1243. with

  1244. everybody

  1245. else

  1246. and God's

  1247. going to

  1248. call you

  1249. today

  1250. if you

  1251. are like

  1252. Burden Barry

  1253. to stop

  1254. worshipping

  1255. your distractions

  1256. to stop

  1257. even worshipping

  1258. your pains

  1259. and to

  1260. come into

  1261. the loving

  1262. arms of a

  1263. God who

  1264. loves you

  1265. way more

  1266. than you

  1267. realize

  1268. and to

  1269. lay your

  1270. distractions

  1271. to lay

  1272. your burdens

  1273. to lay

  1274. your regrets

  1275. and your

  1276. hurts

  1277. on the

  1278. altar

  1279. and find

  1280. that his

  1281. arms of

  1282. love

  1283. are big

  1284. enough

  1285. for you

  1286. and let

  1287. him free

  1288. you

  1289. to come

  1290. back to

  1291. your first

  1292. love

  1293. some of

  1294. you need

  1295. to pray

  1296. and ask

  1297. for God

  1298. to change

  1299. you in

  1300. that

  1301. feelings

  1302. felicia

  1303. and

  1304. and

  1305. then

  1306. this

  1307. insecure

  1308. Ian

  1309. you

  1310. worship

  1311. your

  1312. insecurities

  1313. you know

  1314. that actually

  1315. God is

  1316. calling you

  1317. maybe he's

  1318. calling you

  1319. to quit

  1320. your job

  1321. and actually

  1322. go into

  1323. full-time

  1324. ministry

  1325. or maybe

  1326. into

  1327. missions

  1328. or maybe

  1329. he's actually

  1330. calling you

  1331. to join in

  1332. with the

  1333. core team

  1334. of this

  1335. second

  1336. service

  1337. that we're

  1338. starting

  1339. or he's

  1340. calling you

  1341. to give

  1342. away

  1343. or to

  1344. serve

  1345. in a

  1346. whole

  1347. load

  1348. of areas

  1349. which you

  1350. just don't

  1351. really want

  1352. to because

  1353. you're feeling

  1354. inadequate

  1355. in things

  1356. and you

  1357. want to

  1358. put a

  1359. little

  1360. toe

  1361. on the

  1362. altar

  1363. or maybe

  1364. an arm

  1365. but you

  1366. don't want

  1367. to put

  1368. your whole

  1369. thing

  1370. because it

  1371. feels

  1372. scary

  1373. and you

  1374. don't know

  1375. what's

  1376. going to

  1377. happen

  1378. and God

  1379. says I

  1380. want it

  1381. all or I

  1382. don't want

  1383. it at

  1384. all

  1385. present

  1386. your fears

  1387. to me

  1388. rehearse

  1389. how much

  1390. I've been

  1391. faithful to

  1392. you so

  1393. you know

  1394. that I'm

  1395. going to

  1396. carry you

  1397. all the

  1398. way

  1399. through

  1400. don't

  1401. live and

  1402. worship

  1403. your

  1404. insecurities

  1405. let me

  1406. be your

  1407. security

  1408. step out

  1409. and trust

  1410. me

  1411. with what

  1412. I'm

  1413. calling

  1414. you

  1415. to

  1416. do

  1417. feelings

  1418. Felicia

  1419. burden

  1420. Barry

  1421. insecure

  1422. Ian

  1423. final

  1424. one

  1425. committed

  1426. Carol

  1427. you

  1428. see

  1429. for

  1430. committed

  1431. Carol

  1432. everyone

  1433. looks at

  1434. you

  1435. because

  1436. you

  1437. look

  1438. like

  1439. a

  1440. living

  1441. sacrifice

  1442. you

  1443. invest

  1444. all

  1445. your

  1446. time

  1447. in

  1448. serving

  1449. other

  1450. people

  1451. in

  1452. missional

  1453. justice

  1454. and

  1455. in

  1456. a

  1457. whole

  1458. load

  1459. of

  1460. activities

  1461. and

  1462. a lot

  1463. of

  1464. people

  1465. think

  1466. you're

  1467. the

  1468. perfect

  1469. Christian

  1470. but

  1471. deep

  1472. down

  1473. you know

  1474. you've

  1475. lost

  1476. your

  1477. why

  1478. it's

  1479. become

  1480. dutiful

  1481. you

  1482. maybe

  1483. find it

  1484. hard

  1485. to

  1486. say

  1487. no

  1488. because

  1489. a lot

  1490. of your

  1491. serving

  1492. is

  1493. driven

  1494. maybe

  1495. from

  1496. childhood

  1497. things

  1498. but

  1499. it's

  1500. driven

  1501. by the

  1502. sense

  1503. that

  1504. you're

  1505. never

  1506. doing

  1507. enough

  1508. you

  1509. need

  1510. to

  1511. perform

  1512. to

  1513. be

  1514. accepted

  1515. and

  1516. to

  1517. be

  1518. valued

  1519. and

  1520. to

  1521. be

  1522. loved

  1523. and

  1524. if

  1525. you

  1526. stopped

  1527. you

  1528. just

  1529. wonder

  1530. whether

  1531. you'd

  1532. have

  1533. any

  1534. significance

  1535. and

  1536. actually

  1537. that's

  1538. a

  1539. really

  1540. heavy

  1541. yoke

  1542. for

  1543. some

  1544. of

  1545. you

  1546. and

  1547. the

  1548. mercies

  1549. of

  1550. God

  1551. come

  1552. to

  1553. you

  1554. today

  1555. and

  1556. say

  1557. surrender

  1558. your

  1559. desire

  1560. for

  1561. acceptance

  1562. and

  1563. value

  1564. on

  1565. the

  1566. altar

  1567. and

  1568. allow

  1569. my

  1570. acceptance

  1571. of

  1572. you

  1573. to

  1574. be

  1575. enough

  1576. for

  1577. you

  1578. because

  1579. my

  1580. mercies

  1581. are

  1582. way

  1583. more

  1584. way

  1585. more

  1586. way

  1587. more

  1588. satisfying

  1589. securing

  1590. and

  1591. delighting

  1592. in your

  1593. heart

  1594. than

  1595. trying to

  1596. gain it

  1597. from

  1598. anybody

  1599. else

  1600. or even

  1601. from

  1602. yourself

  1603. I don't

  1604. know where

  1605. you're up

  1606. to

  1607. I don't

  1608. know whether

  1609. you fit

  1610. into any

  1611. of those

  1612. or actually

  1613. God is

  1614. speaking to

  1615. you in

  1616. another

  1617. way

  1618. but

  1619. you

  1620. realize

  1621. you

  1622. can

  1623. have

  1624. the

  1625. most

  1626. amazing

  1627. attractive

  1628. spouse

  1629. in the

  1630. world

  1631. and

  1632. over

  1633. time

  1634. you

  1635. can

  1636. grow

  1637. familiar

  1638. and

  1639. just

  1640. take

  1641. them

  1642. for

  1643. granted

  1644. and

  1645. sometimes

  1646. you

  1647. need

  1648. somebody

  1649. else

  1650. to

  1651. remind

  1652. you

  1653. wow

  1654. your

  1655. spouse

  1656. is

  1657. amazing

  1658. in

  1659. the

  1660. church

  1661. we

  1662. need

  1663. each

  1664. other

  1665. to

  1666. remind

  1667. us

  1668. of

  1669. just

  1670. how

  1671. amazing

  1672. the

  1673. gospel

  1674. message

  1675. is

  1676. that's

  1677. why

  1678. we

  1679. talk

  1680. about

  1681. Jesus

  1682. every

  1683. Sunday

  1684. but

  1685. we

  1686. need

  1687. that

  1688. to

  1689. go

  1690. from

  1691. just

  1692. I

  1693. know

  1694. this

  1695. to

  1696. going

  1697. I

  1698. know

  1699. this

  1700. and

  1701. my

  1702. appeal

  1703. to

  1704. you

  1705. this

  1706. morning

  1707. as

  1708. Paul

  1709. appeals

  1710. is

  1711. don't

  1712. go

  1713. away

  1714. from

  1715. here

  1716. just

  1717. going

  1718. that

  1719. was

  1720. nice

  1721. God

  1722. is

  1723. calling

  1724. you

  1725. he

  1726. is

  1727. saying

  1728. I

  1729. want

  1730. it

  1731. all

  1732. but

  1733. I

  1734. am

  1735. not

  1736. calling

  1737. you

  1738. to

  1739. just

  1740. a

  1741. burdensome

  1742. duty

  1743. I

  1744. am

  1745. calling

  1746. you

  1747. to

  1748. delight

  1749. in

  1750. me

  1751. because

  1752. you

  1753. see

  1754. how

  1755. much

  1756. I

  1757. have

  1758. done

  1759. for

  1760. you

  1761. and

  1762. if

  1763. you

  1764. are

  1765. not

  1766. in

  1767. that

  1768. place

  1769. he

  1770. says

  1771. run

  1772. to

  1773. me

  1774. and

  1775. ask

  1776. for

  1777. me

  1778. to

  1779. change

  1780. your

  1781. heart

  1782. because

  1783. I

  1784. love

  1785. answering

  1786. that

  1787. kind

  1788. of

  1789. prayer

  1790. here

  1791. is

  1792. a

  1793. why

  1794. big

  1795. enough

  1796. for

  1797. when

  1798. you're

  1799. tired

  1800. when

  1801. you're

  1802. bored

  1803. when

  1804. you're

  1805. struggling

  1806. in

  1807. whatever

  1808. area

  1809. you're

  1810. up

  1811. to

  1812. to

  1813. propel

  1814. us

  1815. to

  1816. see

  1817. our

  1818. bank

  1819. balances

  1820. our

  1821. sex

  1822. life

  1823. our

  1824. careers

  1825. our

  1826. schedule

  1827. as an

  1828. offering

  1829. of

  1830. worship

  1831. not

  1832. for

  1833. ourselves

  1834. but

  1835. for

  1836. his

  1837. glory

  1838. and

  1839. his

  1840. praise

  1841. I'm

  1842. going

  1843. to

  1844. stop

  1845. there

  1846. there's

  1847. three

  1848. kinds

  1849. of

  1850. responses

  1851. that

  1852. we

  1853. started

  1854. talking

  1855. about

  1856. last

  1857. week

  1858. and

  1859. I'd

  1860. like

  1861. you

  1862. to

  1863. actually

  1864. think

  1865. how

  1866. should

  1867. you

  1868. respond

  1869. now

  1870. if

  1871. you're

  1872. a

  1873. Christian

  1874. you're

  1875. a

  1876. prince

  1877. and

  1878. a

  1879. princess

  1880. in

  1881. the

  1882. kingdom

  1883. of

  1884. God

  1885. some

  1886. of

  1887. you

  1888. may

  1889. just

  1890. actually

  1891. need

  1892. to

  1893. respond

  1894. in

  1895. praising

  1896. or

  1897. thanking

  1898. him

  1899. because

  1900. you

  1901. don't

  1902. take

  1903. time

  1904. to

  1905. thank

  1906. him

  1907. you

  1908. know

  1909. this

  1910. week

  1911. I

  1912. spent

  1913. I

  1914. took

  1915. about

  1916. 30

  1917. minutes

  1918. to

  1919. just

  1920. go

  1921. over

  1922. the

  1923. mercies

  1924. of

  1925. God

  1926. that

  1927. I've

  1928. actually

  1929. seen

  1930. in

  1931. my

  1932. life

  1933. it's

  1934. an

  1935. amazing

  1936. thing

  1937. to

  1938. do

  1939. some

  1940. of

  1941. you

  1942. right

  1943. now

  1944. you

  1945. actually

  1946. just

  1947. need

  1948. to

  1949. take

  1950. a

  1951. minute

  1952. or

  1953. two

  1954. and

  1955. just

  1956. go

  1957. God

  1958. how

  1959. have

  1960. you

  1961. been

  1962. merciful

  1963. to

  1964. me

  1965. in

  1966. fact

  1967. don't

  1968. just

  1969. do

  1970. it

  1971. now

  1972. I

  1973. encourage

  1974. you

  1975. to

  1976. do

  1977. it

  1978. every

  1979. day

  1980. this

  1981. week

  1982. some

  1983. of

  1984. you

  1985. actually

  1986. just

  1987. need

  1988. to

  1989. confess

  1990. that

  1991. you

  1992. have

  1993. treated

  1994. Jesus

  1995. so

  1996. lightly

  1997. you

  1998. put

  1999. a

  2000. toe

  2001. on

  2002. the

  2003. altar

  2004. maybe

  2005. not

  2006. even

  2007. a

  2008. toe

  2009. and

  2010. he

  2011. wants

  2012. it

  2013. all

  2014. and

  2015. you

  2016. need

  2017. to

  2018. run

  2019. to

  2020. him

  2021. and

  2022. just

  2023. be

  2024. honest

  2025. with

  2026. him

  2027. and

  2028. some

  2029. of

  2030. us

  2031. as

  2032. we

  2033. think

  2034. about

  2035. what

  2036. he's

  2037. calling

  2038. you

  2039. to

  2040. do

  2041. you've

  2042. got

  2043. to

  2044. make

  2045. a

  2046. decision

  2047. to

  2048. choose

  2049. to

  2050. follow

  2051. what

  2052. he's

  2053. calling

  2054. you

  2055. to

  2056. do

  2057. and

  2058. tell

  2059. someone

  2060. about

  2061. it

  2062. so

  2063. I'm

  2064. going

  2065. to

  2066. give

  2067. you

  2068. a

  2069. minute

  2070. or

  2071. two

  2072. just

  2073. to

  2074. actually

  2075. respond

  2076. right

  2077. now

  2078. with

  2079. any

  2080. of

  2081. those

  2082. three

  2083. things

  2084. we're

  2085. going

  2086. to

  2087. come

  2088. up

  2089. in

  2090. a

  2091. minute

  2092. to

  2093. take

  2094. communion

  2095. but

  2096. I

  2097. want

  2098. you

  2099. to

  2100. let's

  2101. not

  2102. take

  2103. communion

  2104. lightly

  2105. let's

  2106. not

  2107. take

  2108. communion

  2109. until

  2110. we've

  2111. really

  2112. rethought

  2113. and rehearsed

  2114. the

  2115. mercies

  2116. of

  2117. God

  2118. so

  2119. this

  2120. is

  2121. no

  2122. longer

  2123. an

  2124. external

  2125. ritual

  2126. but

  2127. it's

  2128. spiritual

  2129. worship

  2130. from

  2131. the

  2132. inside

  2133. so

  2134. let's

  2135. as

  2136. I

  2137. want

  2138. to

  2139. invite

  2140. the

  2141. band

  2142. to

  2143. come

  2144. up

  2145. maybe

  2146. the

  2147. communion

  2148. stewards

  2149. want

  2150. to

  2151. come

  2152. up

  2153. as

  2154. well

  2155. but

  2156. I

  2157. want

  2158. you

  2159. to

  2160. take

  2161. a

  2162. minute

  2163. where

  2164. are

  2165. you

  2166. with

  2167. Christ

  2168. how

  2169. precious

  2170. is

  2171. he

  2172. to

  2173. you
