  1. Father, once again, we come to you acknowledging that sometimes your word is shocking and confuses us very deeply.

  2. And sometimes, Father, if we're honest, when we come to your word, we actually find it not something that gives us hope, but something that we almost find repulsive.

  3. And, Father, we're going to be looking at a text like this today.

  4. And so we ask that the Holy Spirit would move with gentle power in each of us, that we might walk towards these fears at the center of our heart as we walk towards you.

  5. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  6. I have to give you a bit of a almost like a trigger alert or a spoiler alert at the beginning.

  7. We're going to be looking at Lamentations chapter 4.

    Lamentations 4 chapter mention

  8. Those of you who don't have Bibles or aren't familiar with this, the words to the text are going to show up on the screen underneath.

  9. But you know what? It's really good to have your own Bibles as well.

  10. So you can just sort of check things out and maybe make marks or notes in them if you're that type of a person.

  11. And I should let you know that the text is going to talk about a mother who kills her.

  12. Okay. Sorry.

  13. There's no sort of way to just sort of bring this up in polite conversation or something like this.

  14. This text, once again, talks about some very dark issues, some very, very hard issues, which are issues that happen in the world all of the time but seem to be in the Bible.

  15. And not seem to be in the Bible, are in the Bible and are in the Bible in a way which we find very, very hard to understand.

  16. The text is going to make reference to a woman who kills her child and then cooks it to eat it.

  17. There's no way that I can sort of sugarcoat that.

  18. And the text is also going to talk about Sodom.

  19. And it's going to talk about the Lord causing pain amongst other things.

  20. And so this is what I – when I said this is not the type of text that Christians or non-Christians, I mean, would normally look at.

  21. Non-Christians, I guess, probably wouldn't even know that it's there.

  22. But it's a very, very hard text.

  23. And just a couple of other things before we look at it because we're going to look at the text.

  24. We're going to read it from the beginning to the end.

  25. And the first thing is, and I hope there's an image here that can go on the screen at this particular time, just to help to understand the context of the text, that the Book of Lamentations are five linked poems.

  26. And each poem, in a sense, is separate, but the poems are all linked.

  27. And they're linked in a very sort of very clever way and an important way.

  28. For instance, each poem has separate subpoems, but because the poem is an acrostic, you know that the poems have to be held together.

  29. It's exploring a sets of ideas together.

  30. And then the way the whole five poems are sort of structured, there's other significance, and I'll mention something about that at the end.

  31. But these five poems are written after the destruction of Jerusalem.

  32. And the destruction of Jerusalem was, we would now call it, close to ethnic cleansing.

  33. Many, many, many people were killed by the Babylonians.

  34. Most of those who weren't killed were carried away into exile.

  35. The city is in rubbles.

  36. And so when you read this text, really the image, which I think is still up on the screen, that should, in a sense, be in the background of your mind.

  37. You might want to, you know, if you're doing this on your own, find some type of image of such ruins and understand the poet is pouring out his pain to God in the context of sitting amongst the rubble, sitting amongst the ruins.

  38. And so that's one of the things that you have to understand about this text as you're going through it.

  39. And the second thing is, and maybe here we just want to jump ahead to chapter 4, verse 11.

  40. This I wanted to be especially helpful for those of you who might be looking at this for the very first time and aren't that familiar with some of the things that I've been wrestling with and we've been talking about in the previous three weeks.

  41. And if you see here in verse 11, the Lord gave full vent to his wrath.

  42. He poured out his hot anger and he kindled a fire in Zion that consumed its foundations.

  43. And Zion sort of is, anyway, it's talking about the rubble.

  44. And as we'll see it in verse 17, I think it is as well, or 16.

  45. And it's been something that's been in the previous three chapters.

  46. It's very, very clear that the destruction was something that the Lord brought about.

  47. And so you need to be aware of that as part of the struggling of the text as we read it.

  48. And we're going to go back to the beginning.

  49. We're going to go to verse 1.

  50. We're going to look at all the text and I'll comment about it a bit as we go along.

  51. And then a few things at the end as well.

  52. And I just want to say something to those of you who might be watching this who definitely wouldn't call yourself Christians or maybe you're ex-Christians or post-Christians.

  53. But you consider yourself somebody who's a bit of a seeker, trying to get a better handle on the meaning of life and the meaning of what it means to be human.

  54. And one of the things, by the way, you're going to get in this text, and I think it's one of the things which makes it hard for us when we read the book of Lamentations,

  55. is a lot of us don't realize that the Bible actually reveals that to understand God we need to also understand ourselves.

  56. And that as we understand ourselves, it also is a way to help us understand the mystery of the triune God.

  57. And that's one of the things which is going to happen as we look at this text, is it's going to actually show a bit of a searchlight into what it means to be human.

  58. But what I want to say is, some of you might be wondering, in fact, one of the things we're going to look at,

  59. this book of Lamentations looks more like something that's written by one of God's enemies rather than his friends.

  60. It looks more like a chapter that's written by a deconversion blog, or a I gave up religion blog, or why I am an atheist blog.

  61. And it looks as if it's evidence against the Christian faith.

  62. And so you might wonder why we're even looking at, like, first of all, it's a bit of a shock that it's in the Bible, and why are we even looking at it?

  63. One of the things we do at Church of the Messiah is, we want to address the important questions, both emotional, existential, and intellectual, that human beings face.

  64. And we don't ever want to try to present Jesus as Lord in a way where, I don't know, God has this wonderful plan for your life,

  65. and we say all this, and there's all this glittery stuff, and we sort of hide and cover up the stuff which seems to go against it,

  66. or the stuff which is going to be very difficult.

  67. That's one of the reasons why we preach through whole books of the Bible, as a general rule.

  68. There's no fine print. There's nothing hidden.

  69. And if you are at all involved in a bit of a spiritual quest, we'd love it if you connected with us.

  70. We'd love to have conversations with you to see what we can do to help you with that, to be challenged by your questions.

  71. If you have questions about the sermon, I can't promise to answer all of them, but feel free to email the Church,

  72. and I will take that into account as I preach.

  73. We don't want to walk away from problems or questions.

  74. We want to listen to good questions.

  75. We want to look at good problems.

  76. We want to walk towards them.

  77. And so if you're at all a seeker, please feel free to connect with us.

  78. But let's get into the text.

  79. Cannibalism, Sodom, God-causing pain.

  80. Let's look.

  81. Chapter 4, verse 1.

  82. And here's how it begins.

  83. And we'll just sort of pause there for a second.

  84. And the text begins, the word how is part of this whole thing of lament, like how could this happen,

  85. usually said in the context of a terrible catastrophe.

  86. And that's how this poem is introduced with this word.

  87. In fact, actually to show how important it is, it actually says it three times.

  88. If you'll notice in the first two verses, this will be the last one of the five poems where this is worded,

  89. but it's sort of highlighted how, how, how.

  90. And the image of the gold and the pure gold and the holy stones or the precious stones being scattered everywhere,

  91. that's just talking about the fact that human beings are very precious.

  92. It's an imagery to try to communicate that human beings have a great worth.

  93. And yet, even though that human beings have a great worth, they're being treated as if, you know,

  94. if you just took the cheap type of pottery, maybe you're going to get your kid or your grandkid or your best friend,

  95. excuse me, a bit of a frog in my throat, and you're going to maybe get them into pottery.

  96. And you get the cheapest clay and you get them their pottery thing and they try their little experiment

  97. and then it's, you know, it dries, but it's a complete and utter disaster,

  98. and a disaster in a way that isn't even cute.

  99. You know, if it's a kid and you want to keep it, and it just gets shattered and the shards.

  100. And so what's being talked about here at the very, very beginning is how, how, how,

  101. that human beings who are of very, very precious should be understood as if they're gold,

  102. as if they're precious and holy stones are being treated the same way that you would treat the shards

  103. of the cheapest pottery clay after it's been broken.

  104. That's the imagery here, which launches this first section, which is the first 10 verses.

  105. And it's going to culminate with this terrible image of a mom having killed her child,

  106. cooking the child to eat it.

  107. The first 10 verses are one literary unit in the original language.

  108. Let's look at verse 3.

  109. And when it says here, the daughter of my people, it's not just saying as if women have become cruel.

  110. One of the things all the way through this is that God's people are always,

  111. there's feminine imagery to refer to God's people, to the human race.

  112. And so when it says the daughter of my people, it's not saying, oh, I like how evil women are.

  113. It's not like that at all.

  114. It's, in fact, the way, the, the way to picture humanity is feminine.

  115. And the way to picture, in a sense, redeemed humanity is, is feminine.

  116. So that's what's going on here.

  117. But notice that the part of it is that the people have become cruel.

  118. Verse 4, the tongue of the nursing infant sticks to the roof of its mouth for thirst.

  119. The children beg for food, but no one gives to them.

  120. In fact, part of the way that you see the deep cruelty of the people and the self-centeredness of the people

  121. is the way they handle the most weak and the most vulnerable, the way they handle children.

  122. Verse 5, those who once feasted on delicacies perish in the street.

  123. Those who were brought up in purple embrace ash heaps.

  124. And the significance of purple is in the ancient world when this was written,

  125. only the very rich could afford things which were dyed in the color purple.

  126. And so it's, that's the sign, it's just one of those little type of images that archaeologists and anthropologists,

  127. et cetera, now know.

  128. So that's the imagery there of those who were brought up in very, very, very poor places are now also,

  129. I mean, rich places are now reduced to great poverty.

  130. Verse 6, and here there's a bit of a, if you have a good Bible,

  131. you'll notice a little note with two of the words, and I'll explain the significance of it for you.

  132. The chest, for this chastisement of the daughter of my people has been greater than the punishment of Sodom,

  133. which was overthrown in a moment and no hands were wrung for her.

  134. And the word chastisement, it's one of just things in the original language,

  135. the word chastisement can also mean evil or sin or iniquity.

  136. And the word punishment can also mean evil or sin or iniquity.

  137. And so what the thing is that the author is doing, it's a very, very clever thing.

  138. Just as in English, we have ways, usually it's used with sexual things and jokes,

  139. double entendres where they're making a comment on one level and others understand

  140. that it's probably making a reference to another level.

  141. Often in children's movies, not that they'll have these sexual entendres,

  142. but there'll be some joke that kids will laugh at.

  143. But there's another sense of the words that the adults will get, and they'll also laugh at that.

  144. And that's what's going on here, but not in a way to make a joke,

  145. is that there's this connection between both the punishment, the sin or the evil that the people have done,

  146. and the punishment that the people have received.

  147. And for the writers, Sodom is the example of the worst possible city.

  148. Not just in sexual matters, which I'm not going to get into in this sermon.

  149. You can look at some of my other sermons on that.

  150. In fact, I think one of my sermons in Colossians, I dealt with it just recently.

  151. But it's also in terms of how the bloodthirtiness, if you look at other texts,

  152. it's also to do with the cruelty of the people, the way they treated the weak and the helpless,

  153. the sheer lust for power and conquest, which was of such an evil matter that the city was destroyed by God.

  154. And so we see here, look at verse 6 again.

  155. By the way, this isn't an anti-Semitic text, because it's a part of our Jewish friends call this the Torah or the Tanakh,

  156. and we Christians call it the Old Testament, and the poet is Jewish.

  157. And so it's part of the Jewish scriptures.

  158. So this isn't an anti-Semitic text, if you're sort of puzzled by it.

  159. Verse 7 again.

  160. Her princes were purer than snow, whiter than milk.

  161. Their bodies were more ruddy than coral.

  162. The beauty of their form was like sapphire.

  163. Now their face is blacker than soot.

  164. If you've ever been to Israel and you've been there in the sunny weather,

  165. it's picturing people who have no shade.

  166. And because they're reduced to living under the elements,

  167. their skin has just become unbelievably darkened and blackened from the sun.

  168. And of course, with the starvation and the lack of being able to wash, that's befallen them.

  169. Now their face is blacker than soot.

  170. They are not recognized in the streets.

  171. Their skin has shriveled on their bones.

  172. It has become as dry as wood.

  173. Happier were the victims of the sword than the victims of hunger who wasted away,

  174. pierced by lack of the fruits of the field.

  175. The hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children.

  176. They became their food during the destruction of the daughter of my people.

  177. Now that's just a horrific image.

  178. And it's a horrific image which could come from the news.

  179. Although I think even news outlets, if that happens in different places of the world,

  180. they probably wouldn't show it.

  181. It would be too horrific for the news.

  182. It might even be too horrific for YouTube and social media.

  183. And you can see how reading these first 10 verses,

  184. it sounds more like something that's been written to provide evidence against the Lord's existence.

  185. But you have to think about this most horrific detail is also the most telling.

  186. Because you have to ask yourself,

  187. who or what caused that woman to kill her own child to eat it?

  188. It's very clear within the text that the Lord didn't do that.

  189. In fact, as we're going to see as the text goes on,

  190. one of the things which actually makes it very, very hard for post-modern and modern

  191. or post-truth people like us to get our minds around the Bible,

  192. is the Bible is actually,

  193. even when it talks about the sovereignty of God,

  194. which the Book of Lamentations does,

  195. there is no system of thought,

  196. no spirituality,

  197. no religion

  198. that so maintains the importance

  199. and the centrality of human freedom

  200. as the scriptures.

  201. And while it's clear

  202. that the destruction of the nation

  203. is part of God's judgment,

  204. which we're going to look at in the next few verses,

  205. God doesn't

  206. sort of just overwhelm

  207. random women

  208. and while they kick and struggle

  209. and resist against God

  210. forces them to do something horrific and evil.

  211. These women chose that.

  212. And earlier,

  213. the cruelty towards children

  214. were chosen by the people.

  215. I can tell you this right now,

  216. and I'm not going to use myself as an example

  217. because that would be self-righteous.

  218. I can tell you this right now about my wife, Louise.

  219. There is absolutely no way

  220. in a gazillion, billion, hundred million years,

  221. even at the threat of the greatest torture,

  222. that she would do something like this.

  223. Like, absolutely no way.

  224. She would give every last bit of water,

  225. every last bit of food

  226. to care for her child

  227. or her grandchild

  228. or other people's children.

  229. You see,

  230. the judgment of God

  231. also reveals.

  232. And that becomes scary

  233. because all of a sudden,

  234. you see,

  235. we've been looking at this text

  236. as an indictment of God.

  237. But if you understand

  238. that this is talking about

  239. what human beings do,

  240. the cruelty

  241. that we human beings can do,

  242. you realize that all of a sudden,

  243. it's inviting us

  244. to have a searchlight look

  245. at our own hearts

  246. and the hearts of the human condition.

  247. This woman's selfishness

  248. and callousness

  249. and evil,

  250. these women,

  251. and not just the women,

  252. but the whole city.

  253. Nobody,

  254. no man,

  255. nobody stepped in

  256. to intervene.

  257. And we all know

  258. that human beings

  259. are possible

  260. of such great evil.

  261. And some of us

  262. might say,

  263. well,

  264. I would never do that.

  265. And as I said,

  266. my wife would never do that.

  267. That's why we have to look

  268. at this text and say,

  269. whoa, whoa, whoa,

  270. what's going on?

  271. See,

  272. the judgment of God

  273. always reveals.

  274. And when it reveals,

  275. it reveals

  276. to our great surprise

  277. the wisdom of God.

  278. and his mercy.

  279. Because we're going to talk

  280. at the end about hope

  281. and how this text

  282. all points

  283. towards our need

  284. for a very great deliverance.

  285. But the Lord's judgment

  286. reveals.

  287. And if we look at our own hearts

  288. and our own minds,

  289. if we look at what we do

  290. in our minds,

  291. how we talk about

  292. other people

  293. at different times,

  294. what we would do

  295. to other people

  296. in our own minds,

  297. how maybe

  298. if you're in a social group

  299. at work

  300. or curling club

  301. or the golf club

  302. or something like that

  303. and how you deal

  304. with the person

  305. who's definitely

  306. not cool,

  307. not hip,

  308. how you deal with that.

  309. Maybe if you're

  310. a whole pile of Canadians,

  311. you find out

  312. that somebody

  313. would have voted

  314. for Trump

  315. and how you would

  316. deal with them.

  317. Or if you're a whole pile

  318. of Trump supporters

  319. and you found out

  320. somebody who wanted

  321. the tattoo

  322. I love Hillary Clinton

  323. on their bicep

  324. and how you would

  325. deal with them,

  326. how we deal

  327. with the weak

  328. and the vulnerable,

  329. what we do

  330. in our own mind,

  331. we have to acknowledge

  332. the truth of the Bible

  333. for all have sinned

  334. and fall short

  335. of the glory of God.

  336. We have to acknowledge

  337. that there's something

  338. profoundly mysterious

  339. about human beings

  340. that at the beginning

  341. of this,

  342. when I say the text

  343. compares human beings

  344. as being like

  345. precious gold

  346. and precious

  347. and holy stones

  348. and we can all nod

  349. and acknowledge

  350. that there's something

  351. true about that

  352. but we also have

  353. to acknowledge

  354. that when we look

  355. at it

  356. that there's something

  357. about human beings

  358. that makes great

  359. horrific evil

  360. also equally possible

  361. and how can we square

  362. those two things?

  363. Is a human being

  364. like trying to,

  365. is having a true,

  366. good,

  367. redeemed human being

  368. like trying to have

  369. a square circle?

  370. How do we put

  371. these two truths

  372. together

  373. and put these two truths

  374. together in a way

  375. that causes

  376. and brings about

  377. and is consistent

  378. with hope

  379. and not despair?

  380. Well, the text

  381. is going to go

  382. deeper into this

  383. whole thing.

  384. In fact,

  385. once again,

  386. it's going to be

  387. something that at first

  388. it looks like an

  389. indictment of the Lord

  390. but actually reveals

  391. something about

  392. human beings.

  393. Look at verse 11.

  394. The next little

  395. literary unit

  396. in the text

  397. and this is in

  398. the original language

  399. is verses 11 to 16

  400. and because it's

  401. an acrostic

  402. the 22 verses

  403. you realize

  404. that this series

  405. of examinations

  406. of mysteries

  407. and riddles

  408. and paradoxes

  409. and horrors

  410. and glories

  411. are all held

  412. together at a

  413. literary level

  414. by being an

  415. acrostic poem.

  416. But look at

  417. verses 11 to 16.

  418. The Lord gave

  419. full vent

  420. to his wrath.

  421. He poured out

  422. his hot anger

  423. and he kindled

  424. the fire in Zion

  425. that consumed

  426. its foundations.

  427. The kings of the earth

  428. did not believe

  429. nor any of the

  430. inhabitants of the world

  431. that foe or enemy

  432. could enter the gates

  433. of Jerusalem.

  434. This was for the sins

  435. of her prophets

  436. and the iniquities

  437. of her priests

  438. who shed in the midst

  439. of her

  440. the blood

  441. of the righteous.

  442. They wandered blind.

  443. This is now talking

  444. about the prophets

  445. and the priests.

  446. They wandered blind

  447. through the streets.

  448. They were so defiled

  449. with blood

  450. that no one was able

  451. to touch their garments.

  452. Away, unclean,

  453. people cried at them.

  454. Away, away,

  455. do not touch.

  456. So they became

  457. fugitives and wanderers.

  458. People said

  459. among the peoples

  460. they shall no longer

  461. with,

  462. they shall stay

  463. with us no longer.

  464. The Lord himself

  465. has scattered them.

  466. He will regard

  467. them no more.

  468. No honor was shown

  469. to the priests,

  470. no favor

  471. to the elders.

  472. Now,

  473. once again,

  474. it's making it clear

  475. that the judgment

  476. upon the people

  477. was something

  478. that God does.

  479. And here we have

  480. to just,

  481. I've mentioned this

  482. before,

  483. I'm just going to

  484. mention it again

  485. very briefly.

  486. One of the things

  487. that we don't realize

  488. when we look

  489. at the Christian God,

  490. the triune God,

  491. and when we look

  492. at the scriptures,

  493. is that often

  494. people have

  495. two different types

  496. of complaints

  497. about the triune God,

  498. about Christianity.

  499. And people rarely

  500. stop to ask themselves

  501. how they can hold

  502. both criticisms

  503. at the same time

  504. because they can't.

  505. They have to choose

  506. and there's problems

  507. with even choosing one.

  508. On one hand,

  509. one of the reasons

  510. that the most common reason

  511. for the last several

  512. hundred years

  513. why people wouldn't believe

  514. in the God

  515. described by Jesus,

  516. the Trinity,

  517. is that he doesn't,

  518. he allows evil

  519. to happen.

  520. At the same time,

  521. and I can tell you this

  522. with very,

  523. very great certainty

  524. that two of the main reasons

  525. why many people today

  526. will also not believe

  527. in the God of the Bible

  528. is one that's teaching

  529. on sexuality,

  530. which we're not going

  531. to look at today,

  532. but also,

  533. of course,

  534. it's teaching in hell,

  535. which is actually

  536. the teaching of God's judgment.

  537. So which one is it?

  538. You don't believe in God

  539. because he doesn't judge evil

  540. or you don't believe in God

  541. because he does judge evil?

  542. You can't have both.

  543. Like the incoherence

  544. isn't in the Bible.

  545. I don't mean to insult you,

  546. but the incoherence

  547. isn't in the Bible.

  548. And you see,

  549. here's this great mystery

  550. the Bible would say

  551. that the God that does exist

  552. is perfectly good

  553. and perfectly just

  554. and perfectly merciful

  555. and perfectly true.

  556. And both justice

  557. and evil hurts.

  558. There's no way around it.

  559. Both justice

  560. and evil

  561. causes hurt.

  562. If I robbed a bank,

  563. a series of banks,

  564. or I was able to figure out

  565. some way to embezzle

  566. lots of money

  567. or to do something else

  568. which was quite wrong,

  569. and the police capture me

  570. and put me in handcuffs,

  571. that would hurt.

  572. They throw me in jail

  573. and that would cause me

  574. lots of hurt.

  575. Do you think

  576. I should be put in jail

  577. because I've caused damage?

  578. Because maybe I've beat somebody up

  579. or killed somebody

  580. or robbed a bank

  581. or threatened people with guns?

  582. Of course you would.

  583. justice causes hurt.

  584. Evil causes hurt.

  585. The difference is,

  586. and that's what we're going to see

  587. as the poem continues,

  588. is that in true justice,

  589. and that's what we long for,

  590. isn't it?

  591. We might feel sometimes

  592. very cynical

  593. about the possibility of justice,

  594. and it's actually

  595. a very Christian idea.

  596. If you go back,

  597. one of the great profound works

  598. which have shaped

  599. how basically

  600. the whole world,

  601. almost the whole world thinks,

  602. was a profound meditation

  603. called The City of God

  604. by St. Augustine,

  605. Augustine,

  606. 1600 some odd years ago,

  607. where he contrasts

  608. the city of human beings

  609. and the city of God,

  610. and he makes very clear

  611. that on this side of the grave

  612. there's imperfect,

  613. at best,

  614. justice in the world,

  615. and our deep longing

  616. for something

  617. where there is perfect justice

  618. that's only going to actually

  619. be satisfied ultimately

  620. in the gospel,

  621. the biblical gospel.

  622. But what we see here

  623. is if you understand

  624. the profound difference

  625. is that if there is true justice,

  626. true justice will cause hurt

  627. as part of punishment

  628. for that which is truly evil.

  629. But in true justice,

  630. there is the mixture there

  631. of mercy,

  632. the hope that after the punishment

  633. is inflicted,

  634. that there will be

  635. an amendment of life

  636. and a restoration

  637. and a mending of things,

  638. and that the justice

  639. and the hurt,

  640. that there's something

  641. ordered about it,

  642. that it's the right amount,

  643. not enough to dehumanize you

  644. or to make it

  645. that there can be

  646. no mending or restoration,

  647. but evil just loves to hurt.

  648. Evil hurts until it's bored.

  649. Evil hurts until it's bored.

  650. And what we see here

  651. is justice.

  652. This is going to become

  653. a little bit more clear

  654. even with the next bit,

  655. which on one hand

  656. just seems to be,

  657. especially if you understand

  658. what's going on,

  659. is something which is

  660. profoundly anti,

  661. seems to be very,

  662. very anti-Canadian

  663. with our love of,

  664. you know,

  665. in a sense of pluralism

  666. and boutique spiritualities.

  667. I'm not saying that

  668. as a put-down.

  669. I'm not saying that

  670. as a put-down.

  671. I'm just trying to point out

  672. that once you understand

  673. the next bit,

  674. it might be,

  675. George,

  676. you've made matters worse,

  677. but it actually makes matters

  678. clearer and better.

  679. The next literary unit

  680. is verses 17 to 20.

  681. And it goes like this.

  682. Now just sort of pause

  683. because it's going to be

  684. very, very important.

  685. Our eyes failed

  686. ever watching

  687. vainly for help.

  688. They were completely

  689. and utterly committed.

  690. They were coming

  691. under the judgment of God.

  692. They had been warned.

  693. I talked about this

  694. in other things,

  695. is that it's not as if

  696. one day God just sort of,

  697. you know,

  698. thought,

  699. you know,

  700. I'm in a bad mood.

  701. I'm going to punish

  702. these people.

  703. In fact,

  704. at a literary level,

  705. one of the things

  706. which is very fascinating

  707. about this book

  708. at a literary level

  709. is the constant allusions

  710. to what our Jewish friends

  711. call the Torah Torah,

  712. the first five books

  713. of Moses.

  714. But Leviticus

  715. and Deuteronomy,

  716. the constant literary references

  717. and allusions

  718. to the book of Jeremiah,

  719. the book of Isaiah,

  720. the book of Ezekiel,

  721. and other parts

  722. of the scripture,

  723. the Psalms as well.

  724. Constant allusions

  725. to this,

  726. and they're all allusions

  727. to this warning

  728. that the Lord has made,

  729. that there is a day

  730. of the Lord,

  731. a day of judgment,

  732. a warning of what God desires

  733. and how God desires us

  734. to live

  735. in his offer

  736. of covenant and mercy

  737. and warning the people

  738. that if they turn away

  739. from this offer

  740. of a covenant,

  741. of a love relationship,

  742. because that's in fact

  743. what the constant warning is.

  744. It's,

  745. you see,

  746. the book of Lamentations,

  747. we're going to look at it again

  748. in a moment,

  749. I hope I remember to do it,

  750. is that it's part

  751. of a larger story.

  752. And in this part

  753. of a larger story,

  754. the only way to understand

  755. this larger story

  756. is that it's a love story.

  757. It's a love story

  758. where the desire is

  759. that at the end

  760. that evil and injustice

  761. and all

  762. has been really dealt with.

  763. Freedom has been respected,

  764. but justice has been dealt with.

  765. And there's a marriage,

  766. and there's a party,

  767. and there's a celebration.

  768. And the marriage is between

  769. human beings and God.

  770. That's the end

  771. of this overarching story

  772. of which Lamentations

  773. is just part

  774. of this overarching story.

  775. If you think of the Bible

  776. like the way a lot of,

  777. think of a very,

  778. very good novel

  779. called World War Z,

  780. where you have

  781. all these different

  782. literary genres

  783. all knit together

  784. in one book.

  785. It's regular now

  786. for me to read books

  787. where you have

  788. in the same novel

  789. both the narrative

  790. which is going on,

  791. but you might have

  792. newspaper reports,

  793. you might have interviews,

  794. you might have

  795. email correspondence,

  796. all woven into

  797. one overarching story.

  798. And if you understand

  799. that the book of Genesis

  800. to the book of Revelation,

  801. that from a Christian

  802. understanding,

  803. which we learn

  804. from Jesus,

  805. by the way,

  806. we didn't make this up,

  807. we learned it from Jesus.

  808. He was the one

  809. who told us

  810. that there's this

  811. overarching story

  812. that God has written,

  813. caused to be written,

  814. that uses myth,

  815. uses law,

  816. uses poetry,

  817. uses proverbs,

  818. uses irony,

  819. paradox,

  820. history,

  821. prophecy,

  822. historical narrative,

  823. philosophical argument,

  824. and he's woven this,

  825. all these different

  826. literary genres together

  827. into one overarching story

  828. and at the heart of this,

  829. it's a love story.

  830. Like it's a true love story.

  831. The overarching narrative

  832. of the world

  833. is a love story

  834. that desires

  835. to have you included in it.

  836. And so if you go back here

  837. to verse 17,

  838. which I have to read

  839. the 17 to 20,

  840. our eyes failed

  841. ever watching vainly

  842. for help.

  843. Vain,

  844. the image of vain

  845. is a perfect image

  846. right now

  847. in the original language.

  848. It's actually vapor.

  849. So actually,

  850. if you go outside

  851. and you can see your breath

  852. and you can only see your breath

  853. for the briefest of moment,

  854. that's in a sense

  855. the image

  856. which is being used here.

  857. They're looking for help

  858. but it's,

  859. what they get

  860. is just,

  861. it has the substance,

  862. the solidity,

  863. the helpfulness

  864. of the breath

  865. that you see

  866. on a cold winter's day

  867. which is no help at all.

  868. That's not,

  869. you can't build a house on that,

  870. you can't build your life on it.

  871. It lasts the briefest of seconds.

  872. And they were completely

  873. and utterly,

  874. notice in our watching

  875. we watched

  876. in the original language

  877. it just,

  878. it's an intensification

  879. of this,

  880. it's showing that

  881. no matter what starts

  882. to happen to them,

  883. no matter how the warnings

  884. that God has given

  885. for generations and generations

  886. through all sorts

  887. of different means,

  888. through law

  889. and through prophets

  890. and through miracles,

  891. through story,

  892. through all of these things

  893. that no matter

  894. how strong they've been,

  895. no matter how present

  896. they've been,

  897. what is their response

  898. is not to go back

  899. to the Lord

  900. but to in fact

  901. to be completely

  902. and utterly committed

  903. to looking everywhere else.

  904. and the thing,

  905. and here's the anti-Canadian,

  906. not anti-Canadian,

  907. it's just a challenge,

  908. is it's not just

  909. that they're looking,

  910. you know,

  911. it's not like in our days

  912. we're trying to get

  913. the United States

  914. to come in and save us

  915. or maybe Britain

  916. to come in and save us

  917. or Australia

  918. or Belgium

  919. or something like that

  920. or Nigeria.

  921. It's the nations,

  922. in the ancient world

  923. there's no distinction

  924. between the gods

  925. and the nation.

  926. It's not just the people,

  927. it's their gods.

  928. They are looking

  929. to every other

  930. God-created nation.

  931. God ruled,

  932. God suffused,

  933. God infested,

  934. God grounded,

  935. God permeated,

  936. God and goddess

  937. permeated people group.

  938. They've been completely

  939. and utterly committed

  940. to finding it there

  941. somewhere else.

  942. And here's where,

  943. before I read the rest

  944. of the other verses,

  945. here's the big question.

  946. You see,

  947. if you understand

  948. that the living God

  949. is actually inviting you

  950. into a love relationship

  951. with himself

  952. that will go into

  953. all eternity.

  954. Well,

  955. here's maybe a way

  956. to get what the significance

  957. of it is here.

  958. This would be a question

  959. for George.

  960. I'm George,

  961. if you've forgotten my name.

  962. George,

  963. would you rather

  964. have Louise

  965. and be poor

  966. or lose Louise

  967. and be rich?

  968. maybe you're

  969. in a troubled marriage

  970. or in no marriage

  971. and you can't relate

  972. to that.

  973. You have a little baby.

  974. Would you rather

  975. have that baby

  976. and be poor

  977. or lose the baby

  978. and be rich?

  979. Now,

  980. if you even think

  981. about that,

  982. that says something

  983. very,

  984. very,

  985. very,

  986. very,

  987. if you even pause

  988. for an instant

  989. to question it

  990. or wonder about it,

  991. that shows

  992. something

  993. about your heart.

  994. And what's going

  995. to happen

  996. throughout these laments?

  997. You see,

  998. lament is a way

  999. of expressing pain

  1000. and incoherence

  1001. and sorrow

  1002. and questions

  1003. to the living God

  1004. in a way

  1005. that ends up

  1006. restoring relationship.

  1007. And that's what's happening

  1008. in the book

  1009. of Lamentations.

  1010. It's going to happen

  1011. at the end.

  1012. Imagine,

  1013. you know,

  1014. a couple

1015. and you're on the couch

  1016. and one of you

  1017. gets this question

  1018. and you think yourself,

  1019. you know,

1020. Bob is on the couch

  1021. and Sue's beside him

  1022. and Bob thinks,

  1023. well,

  1024. you know,

  1025. maybe I would choose

  1026. riches

  1027. if I had to,

  1028. you know,

  1029. if there's a choice

  1030. between Sue

  1031. and riches,

  1032. I would choose riches.

  1033. And Sue's thinking,

  1034. oh,

1035. I would never choose riches.

  1036. I would choose Bob.

  1037. And afterwards,

  1038. you get talking

  1039. and Bob says,

  1040. well,

  1041. actually,

  1042. I think I would choose riches.

  1043. Do you think Bob

  1044. would come under judgment

  1045. from Sue?

1046. Not just for a moment,

1047. but for a long time?

  1048. And whose side

  1049. would you be on?

1050. Nobody is going to be

  1051. on Bob's side.

1052. You're all going to be

  1053. on Sue's side.

  1054. Listen to this.

  1055. Our eyes failed,

  1056. ever watching vainly

  1057. for help.

  1058. In our watching,

1059. we watch for a nation,

1060. and a God who could not save.

  1061. That's why it's vapor.

  1062. In fact,

1063. the nations dogged our steps

1064. so that we could not walk

  1065. in our streets.

  1066. Our end drew near.

  1067. Our days were numbered

1068. for our end had come.

  1069. Our pursuers were swifter

  1070. than the eagles

  1071. in the heavens.

  1072. They chased us

  1073. on the mountains.

  1074. They laid in wait

1075. for us in the wildernesses.

1076. The breath of our nostrils,

  1077. the Lord's anointed,

1078. was captured in their pits

  1079. of whom we said,

  1080. under his shadow,

1081. we shall live among the nations.

  1082. And he was pursuing

  1083. other gods.

  1084. See,

1085. you begin with this poem

  1086. of great horror,

  1087. and it takes us

  1088. into unexpected places,

  1089. doesn't it?

1090. That if you don't just

  1091. read it shallowly

  1092. and dismiss it,

  1093. thinking,

  1094. yeah, yeah,

  1095. check off a box,

  1096. more reasons to dislike

  1097. the triune God,

1098. but actually start to realize

  1099. it's saying something

  1100. very profound

  1101. about what it means

1102. to be a human being

1103. and the nature of reality.

  1104. And this comes out

  1105. at the end

1106. with the final literary unit,

  1107. which is verses 21 and 22.

  1108. And the first part

  1109. of verse 21,

  1110. it's not as obvious

  1111. in English,

  1112. but it's irony.

  1113. Okay,

  1114. it's irony.

  1115. You know,

1116. it's as if you say

  1117. to your best friend

  1118. who thinks

  1119. that it's a really smart way

  1120. of dealing with

  1121. their problems

  1122. to drink a 2-4

  1123. and go driving

  1124. or drink a 2-4

1125. and play with a loaded gun.

1126. And you give up on them.

  1127. Say,

  1128. yeah,

  1129. yeah,

  1130. sure,

  1131. go ahead.

  1132. That's going to work

  1133. real well.

  1134. Okay,

  1135. you have to understand

  1136. that's what's going on here

1137. with the first little part of it.

  1138. Rejoice and be glad,

  1139. O daughter of Edom,

  1140. who dwell,

  1141. and you who dwell

1142. in the land of Uz,

  1143. but to you also

  1144. the cup shall pass.

  1145. Now it's not irony.

  1146. And by the way,

  1147. Edom is a,

  1148. it's a,

  1149. see,

  1150. one of the things

  1151. that God,

  1152. I believe that God

  1153. designed the Bible

  1154. to,

  1155. it's God's word written,

  1156. but it's designed

1157. to be read in company

  1158. with others,

  1159. where there are people

  1160. who are called

  1161. by the congregation,

  1162. recognized as being called

  1163. by God to study.

1164. So one of the things

  1165. about Edom is,

1166. Edom is in a sense,

1167. a symbol all the way

  1168. through the Old Testament,

  1169. what our Jewish friends

  1170. call the Tanakh.

  1171. It's those who hate

1172. those who belong to God,

1173. who want to belong to God.

1174. The Edom is like a symbol.

1175. It's like one of those

  1176. 50s westerns

1177. where you have the black hats

  1178. and the white hats.

  1179. You know,

1180. the black hats are the bad guys.

  1181. We see Edom generally

  1182. in the Old Testament.

  1183. It's a,

  1184. not just describing

  1185. a people group,

  1186. it's a symbolic word as well.

  1187. It's a black hat.

  1188. It's,

  1189. it's in a sense,

1190. like if we say Wall Street,

  1191. and Wall Street

  1192. isn't just mean a street.

1193. We know that it means

  1194. capitalism,

  1195. it means big business,

  1196. it means finance,

1197. it means all these other things,

1198. and that's the same thing here

  1199. captured by Edom.

  1200. Okay,

  1201. the nations.

  1202. Now,

  1203. this is the end.

  1204. This is,

1205. this is where we actually see

  1206. something like hope

  1207. emerging at the end

  1208. of these reflections.

1209. It's not the full hope

  1210. that it,

  1211. anyway,

  1212. let's read it again.

  1213. Rejoice and be glad,

  1214. O daughter of Edom,

1215. you who dwell in the land of Uz.

  1216. Now the irony ends.

  1217. But to you also

  1218. the cup shall pass.

  1219. You shall become drunk

  1220. and strip yourself bare.

1221. The cup is an image

  1222. of God's judgment.

  1223. You know,

  1224. I've shared this before

  1225. in other contexts.

1226. Those of you who really

  1227. love fantasy movies,

  1228. this is,

1229. you have the type of image.

  1230. And you,

  1231. you know,

1232. if you watch fantasy movies,

  1233. you might see

  1234. somebody trying to capture

1235. all of the power of demons

1236. or all of the power of evil

  1237. in it.

  1238. And,

  1239. and the,

  1240. the magician or whatever,

  1241. the evil magician

  1242. has this power

1243. that all of the evil,

  1244. all the demons,

  1245. it becomes usually

  1246. something black

  1247. and terrible

  1248. and they're able

  1249. to put it in,

  1250. into some cup

  1251. that can be drunk.

  1252. And that,

  1253. that's the image

  1254. which is coming here.

  1255. By the way,

  1256. it's,

  1257. it's an image

1258. and this is going to be

  1259. really important

  1260. in a moment

  1261. because it's the image

1262. if you go to the Gospels

  1263. and read

1264. that one of the images

  1265. that Jesus uses

  1266. just before his death

  1267. is whether he will

  1268. drink the cup.

  1269. It's a case

  1270. where Jesus' prayer,

  1271. God says no

  1272. to Jesus' prayer.

  1273. Jesus says,

  1274. Father,

  1275. if it is possible,

  1276. take this cup

  1277. far from me.

  1278. And we know

1279. that that does not happen.

1280. God does not say yes

  1281. to Jesus' prayer.

  1282. God says no

  1283. to Jesus' prayer.

  1284. And how you understand

  1285. the crucifixion

1286. is that in Jesus' death

  1287. upon the cross,

  1288. he is drinking

  1289. this cup

  1290. of the evil

  1291. of the world.

  1292. He is consuming it

  1293. and being consumed

  1294. by it,

  1295. the innocent one.

  1296. None of the substance

  1297. of that cup

  1298. comes from him.

  1299. It all comes

  1300. from you

  1301. and me.

  1302. And it is

  1303. that cup

  1304. that he drinks

  1305. because for you

  1306. and me

  1307. to drink that cup,

  1308. the punishment

  1309. that befalls

  1310. Israel

  1311. depicted in this book

  1312. would not be

  1313. it's too light.

  1314. Rejoice

  1315. and be glad.

  1316. Verse 21,

  1317. O daughter of Edom,

  1318. you who dwell

1319. in the land of Uz,

  1320. but you also

  1321. the cup shall pass.

  1322. You shall become drunk

  1323. and strip yourself bare.

  1324. In other words,

  1325. completely ashamed,

  1326. unmade.

  1327. The punishment

  1328. of your iniquity,

  1329. O daughter of Zion,

  1330. is accomplished.

  1331. He will keep you

  1332. in exile no longer,

  1333. but your iniquity,

  1334. O daughter of Edom,

  1335. he will punish,

  1336. he will uncover

  1337. your sins.

1338. It's the dawn of hope

  1339. to understand

  1340. they're making

  1341. this historical claim

1342. that part of the punishment

  1343. that God is visiting

  1344. upon them,

  1345. remember I said

  1346. just punishment

  1347. has an end

  1348. with the hope

  1349. of amendment,

  1350. that that's coming

  1351. to the end,

  1352. but it's a recognition

  1353. that the people

  1354. who have destroyed

  1355. Israel,

  1356. have destroyed the people,

  1357. have caused that thing,

  1358. they did that

1359. of their own free will.

  1360. It was both something

  1361. that God,

  1362. in a sense,

  1363. did,

  1364. but they did it

1365. of their own free will.

  1366. We might talk about

  1367. this a little bit

  1368. in the next talk,

1369. but it's of their own

  1370. free will,

  1371. and that punishment

  1372. will fall upon them.

1373. But there's two or three

  1374. final things here,

  1375. I know my time,

1376. and I need to draw

  1377. it to a close.

  1378. The first thing here

  1379. is this line,

  1380. in verse 22,

  1381. the punishment

  1382. of your iniquity,

  1383. O daughter of Zion,

  1384. is accomplished.

  1385. What does Jesus say

  1386. on the cross?

  1387. It's either the last

  1388. or the second last

1389. very words that he speaks.

  1390. It is,

  1391. it is finished.

  1392. In Greek,

  1393. it is,

  1394. also can be translated

  1395. as,

  1396. it is accomplished.

  1397. You see,

  1398. this story

  1399. is preparing you

  1400. for this

  1401. great,

  1402. true and greater

  1403. judgment,

  1404. and true

  1405. and greater

  1406. punishment,

  1407. and true

  1408. and greater

  1409. salvation

  1410. for punishment

  1411. that is going

  1412. to come.

  1413. You see,

  1414. the book

  1415. sets before you

  1416. riddles.

  1417. It's depicted

  1418. how on earth

  1419. is it,

  1420. how deeply evil

  1421. that human beings

  1422. can be.

  1423. It's pointed an image

  1424. to how deeply evil

  1425. we can be,

1426. yet at the same time

1427. it points to this fact

  1428. that there's something

  1429. deeply precious

  1430. about us,

1431. and it points to the fact

  1432. that justice means

1433. that harm has to be done.

  1434. But how can,

  1435. how can this happen?

  1436. How can God

  1437. do justice

  1438. at the same time

  1439. rescuing people

  1440. who are precious

  1441. and yet properly

  1442. dealing with evil?

1443. And how can he do that

  1444. when there are still

  1445. people doing this

  1446. to their children

  1447. and are still doing

  1448. things which are evil?

  1449. Because you see,

1450. the fact of the matter

  1451. is,

  1452. it could have been,

  1453. this isn't,

  1454. Christians aren't ones,

  1455. at least not a well-instructed

  1456. Christian,

1457. never say that we sort

  1458. of have arrived,

  1459. that we're the elite,

1460. that we don't do those

  1461. things,

1462. that we're better than others.

  1463. No!

  1464. Mel Gibson,

  1465. I'm sure,

  1466. is a very,

  1467. very,

  1468. very bad man,

1469. but he did one thing

  1470. which was very,

  1471. very deeply Christian,

1472. is that when he filmed

  1473. that movie,

1474. The Passion of the Christ,

  1475. there's only one time

1476. he appears in the movie

  1477. and it's not known

  1478. unless you read

1479. some of the other notes

  1480. about it.

  1481. And the one place

  1482. he appears

1483. is that when you see

  1484. in that movie,

1485. The Passion of the Christ,

  1486. Jesus being nailed

  1487. to the cross,

1488. those are Mel Gibson's hands

  1489. nailing Jesus

  1490. to the cross

  1491. and every Christian

  1492. should say,

  1493. it could have been

  1494. my hands

  1495. that nailed Jesus

  1496. to the cross.

  1497. But God does not

  1498. weigh my merits,

  1499. he pardons my offenses.

  1500. And this is pointing

1501. to a true and greater thing

1502. and a true and just as this

  1503. judgment happens in history,

  1504. this mighty thing

  1505. that God does

  1506. happens in history,

1507. it happens in real life,

  1508. that's why what Jesus

  1509. does on the cross,

  1510. he who is blameless

  1511. and perfect,

  1512. he who contributes

  1513. nothing to the cup

  1514. of God's wrath,

  1515. he drinks this cup

  1516. of God's wrath

  1517. and while he's,

1518. just as before he dies,

1519. he says it is accomplished,

  1520. the judgment

  1521. that you deserve

  1522. falls on him,

  1523. the judgment

  1524. that I deserve

  1525. falls on him

  1526. and the relationship

  1527. with God

  1528. that I don't,

  1529. that he deserved

  1530. but I don't

  1531. is offered to me

  1532. because he dies

  1533. in my place

  1534. as my substitute,

  1535. as my sacrifice.

  1536. You see,

  1537. it's pointing

  1538. to a true

  1539. and greater sacrifice,

  1540. a true

  1541. and greater grace,

  1542. a true

  1543. and greater justice,

  1544. a true

  1545. and greater mercy,

  1546. that as you begin

  1547. to understand it,

  1548. you recognize

  1549. that it's true

  1550. as true

  1551. as the deepest beauty,

  1552. true as the truth

  1553. of the best music,

1554. true as the best math,

1555. true as the best history,

1556. true as the best thing

  1557. that happened

  1558. in the real world,

  1559. true as happens

1560. in the best emotional truth,

  1561. that it's true

  1562. in the deepest way

  1563. that satisfies

  1564. our longings

  1565. and our yearnings

  1566. and it points

  1567. to that great end.

  1568. There's one other thing

  1569. just really in closing

  1570. for those of us

  1571. who are in Christ

1572. that I hope you get

1573. from watching all of this,

  1574. from reading this book.

  1575. Some of you,

  1576. lovers of Jesus,

  1577. are in the midst

  1578. of ruins

1579. and one of the things

  1580. which is so powerful

  1581. about this book

  1582. is you have this

  1583. high point

  1584. of the steadfast love

  1585. of the Lord

  1586. never faileth,

  1587. his mercies

1588. never come to an end,

  1589. they are new

  1590. every morning.

  1591. Like,

1592. it comes in the middle

  1593. but afterwards

  1594. you're sort of

  1595. expecting that

1596. there won't be any pain

  1597. or anything like that

  1598. but we all know

  1599. that pain just doesn't

  1600. go away quickly

  1601. and this whole thing

  1602. of lamentations

  1603. is there's this

  1604. in the heart-filled pain

1605. has this seed of hope

  1606. that somehow

  1607. God will accomplish

  1608. this dealing

  1609. with iniquity

  1610. and they could only

1611. hope that it would happen.

  1612. We now know

  1613. that it happened

  1614. but we get this

  1615. profound invitation

  1616. that when you understand

  1617. that Jesus has died

  1618. for you,

  1619. that he has dealt

  1620. with all that separates

  1621. from you,

  1622. from God,

  1623. that when you put

  1624. your faith in him

  1625. you become his child

  1626. by adoption of grace

  1627. you have the freedom

  1628. and permission

  1629. when in the midst

  1630. of your ruins

  1631. in the midst

  1632. of your pain

  1633. to express your pain

  1634. to him,

  1635. to point out

1636. the ruins of your life,

  1637. to pour out

  1638. your heart to him.

1639. You don't have to wait

  1640. until you've accomplished

  1641. some type of

  1642. dealing with your emotions

  1643. or some type

  1644. of spiritual breakthrough

  1645. or some type

  1646. of great peace.

  1647. You can pour out

  1648. your heart,

  1649. pour out your incoherence.

  1650. He's not waiting

1651. for you to be coherent,

  1652. he's just waiting

  1653. for you to talk

  1654. to him.

  1655. That his grace

  1656. will start

  1657. to shape your pain.

  1658. You see,

  1659. one of the things

  1660. about the text,

  1661. if the acrostic

  1662. in chapter 1

  1663. and chapter 2,

  1664. acrostic on steroids

  1665. in chapter 3,

  1666. in chapter 4

  1667. the acrostics

  1668. are one-third less

  1669. and by the end,

1670. which is a final prayer,

  1671. the acrostic structure

  1672. is broken down.

  1673. Pain doesn't just

  1674. go away right away.

  1675. You can pour out

  1676. your heart

  1677. to Jesus.

  1678. Friends,

  1679. if we're going

  1680. to close in prayer,

1681. I just want to put

  1682. out an invitation.

  1683. If you're curious

  1684. to know more

1685. about the way of Jesus,

  1686. give us a call.

1687. We'd love to connect you

  1688. with them by email.

1689. We'd love to connect you

  1690. with somebody

1691. who'd like to talk about it.

  1692. There's Bible study groups

  1693. where you can ask

  1694. your honest questions.

  1695. We're going to be

  1696. actually organizing

  1697. something very soon

  1698. called Christianity Explored,

  1699. hopefully within

1700. the next couple of weeks

  1701. where once again

  1702. you can bring

  1703. your honest questions

  1704. and meet with others.

  1705. And if this has

  1706. touched your heart,

1707. there's no better time now

  1708. than to call out

  1709. to Jesus and say,

  1710. Jesus,

  1711. I need someone

  1712. who understands

  1713. the mystery

  1714. and the paradox

  1715. of what it means
