  1. The scripture reading comes from Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  4. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,

  5. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,

  6. which is your spiritual worship.

  7. Do not be conformed to this world.

  8. But be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

  9. that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,

  10. what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  11. This is the word of God.

  12. Great. Thank you so much, Janet.

  13. Well, once again, good morning.

  14. It is wonderful to be back with you again.

  15. And if you are new to Watermark, sorry, I didn't introduce myself earlier.

  16. My name is Kevin, one of the elder pastors here.

  17. It's great to be with you again today.

  18. I wonder if you have ever had a big decision to make,

  19. and you've been grappling with what is God's will in this decision.

  20. If only God could give me a sign.

  21. I've got two job offers on the table, A and B.

  22. Or maybe you've got a job offer to move overseas.

  23. And I just need a sign from God.

  24. What is God's will?

  25. If God will just give me a sign, I'll do it.

  26. That sound familiar to anyone?

  27. In the passage we're going to look at today,

  28. it's going to tell us many things.

  29. One of the things we're going to find out is why God so often

  30. doesn't give us the signs that we want

  31. and doesn't tell us what to do in moments like that.

  32. First, we're working through one chapter of the Bible at the moment,

  33. Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  34. Recently we preached through the book of Daniel,

  35. and each Sunday we looked at these long chapters.

  36. Well, at the moment we're spending six weeks on this one chapter, Romans 12,

  37. a couple of verses at a time.

  38. Today we're just looking at one verse.

  39. And the reason is because Romans chapter 12 is one of the best chapters in the Bible

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  40. to describe and explain what the gospel-centered life is all about and looks like.

  41. If you've been at Watermark for a little while,

  42. you would have heard this phrase, gospel-centered or gospel-shaped life.

  43. But what does that actually mean?

  44. Well, what it means is that the incredibly wonderful good news of the gospel,

  45. that though the world was fallen and cut off from God,

  46. God in His abundant mercy and grace,

  47. because of His profound love for the world,

  48. has made a way to reconcile and to redeem the world

  49. by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for us.

  50. So that sinners and sufferers like us,

  51. who put our faith in Christ,

  52. can be reconciled, can be redeemed, can be restored.

  53. But the gospel actually has a storyline that has a shape to it.

  54. Remember Philippians chapter 2 talks about how Jesus laid aside His glory,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  55. took on the nature of a servant,

  56. humbled Himself to the cross before He was exalted to glory.

  57. And so the gospel, something we're discovering,

  58. is not just a portion of the story Bible,

  59. it is the story Bible.

  60. The gospel is not just a way into the entrance into Christianity,

  61. it is the Christian life.

  62. And so the gospel shaped life is the life where every area of our life,

  63. from our money to our sexuality to marriage to parenting,

  64. work success and work failure,

  65. COVID and cancer, political unrest,

  66. every area of life is shaped and informed by the shape of the gospel.

  67. And Romans chapter 12 is one of the best chapters in the Bible

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  68. to explain that and to describe that and to show what that looks like.

  69. And so we're spending six weeks in this chapter.

  70. And so Romans chapter 12 starts off like this,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  71. by the mercies of God.

  72. In view of God's incredible mercies,

  73. this is how you are to live your life.

  74. And last week Chris showed us that in view of God's mercy,

  75. one of the things that God calls us to is,

  76. the way that we don't waste our lives,

  77. is by bringing our whole lives,

  78. all that we are,

  79. all that we have,

  80. all that we do.

  81. And so here it is,

  82. God,

  83. you are God and I am not,

  84. you are glorious.

  85. I am not,

  86. you are infinite.

  87. Here's my life.

  88. Take it and have your way.

  89. Now,

  90. today,

  91. we're going to look at the second part of that verse two,

  92. and continue to look at what is this gospel shaped life all about.

  93. And so Paul continues with Romans chapter 12 verse two.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  94. What does it look like for us in 21st century Hong Kong,

  95. with everything that's going on,

  96. what does it look like for us not to waste our lives,

  97. but to bring every area of our lives before God and say,

  98. here it is,

  99. have your way.

  100. Well,

  101. look at what Paul says in verse two.

  102. Do not be conformed to this world,

  103. but be transformed into the image and the likeness of Jesus.

  104. Okay,

  105. that's what he means when he says be transformed.

  106. And that's the big idea of this verse.

  107. That's the big idea of the sermon today.

  108. There it is.

  109. It's not very complicated.

  110. Do not be conformed to the patterns and the thinking and the ethos of this

  111. world,

  112. but be transformed into the image and the likeness of Christ Jesus.

  113. The life that God calls us to,

  114. for those of us that are Christians,

  115. is one that is not shaped by the worldview,

  116. the ethos,

  117. or the thinking of our culture,

  118. but one that is shaped and informed by the mercies of God and by the gospel into the likeness of Jesus.

  119. By the mercies of God,

  120. present your bodies as living sacrifices,

  121. holy and acceptable to him.

  122. This is your spiritual act of worship.

  123. Therefore,

  124. do not be conformed to the patterns of this world,

  125. but be transformed into the likeness and the image of Jesus.

  126. Now,

  127. straight away,

  128. we need to think about this a little bit more.

  129. Okay.

  130. There's a couple of things we need to clarify.

  131. The first one is this.

  132. It is a Christian historian by the name of Andrew Walls from Liverpool Hope University.

  133. He wrote a book in the 1990s called The Missionary Spirit,

  134. I think.

  135. And in it,

  136. he describes the difference between what he calls the indigenous principle and the pilgrim principle.

  137. Okay.

  138. And this is what he says.

  139. He says,

  140. as Christians,

  141. we are called to both simultaneously be both indigenous in our culture,

  142. to make our home in our culture and the cities in which we live,

  143. and at the same time,

  144. see ourselves as pilgrims passing through the culture.

  145. So remember Jeremiah 29?

  146. We spoke about it a few weeks ago.

  147. Jeremiah writes to the exiles in Babylon.

  148. He says,

  149. build houses,

  150. plant roots,

  151. make families,

  152. have children,

  153. engage in the city in which you live.

  154. Don't see yourselves as foreigners.

  155. Engage.

  156. Make yourself as a home there.

  157. But at the same time,

  158. there's something that the Bible calls us to,

  159. to be distinctive from the cities in which we live.

  160. To not be so engaged that there's nothing distinctive about us.

  161. Or in the language of Jesus in John 17,

  162. Jesus says,

  163. be in the world,

  164. but not of the world.

  165. Be engaged in the culture,

  166. serving the culture,

  167. rooted in the culture,

  168. loving and serving your city,

  169. and yet something separate or something distinctive about your engagement.

  170. And Paul says the same thing here.

  171. He says in 1 Corinthians,

  172. we are to become all things to all men,

  173. so that by all means we can win some.

  174. And at the same time here,

  175. he says,

  176. do not conform to the patterns of the world.

  177. And so there's this paradox at play in the Christian life.

  178. We are both indigenous in our city,

  179. making a home here,

  180. loving and serving our city,

  181. and yet there's something distinctive,

  182. something pilgrim about the way that we engage in life here.

  183. I think the greatest example of this is Daniel, right?

  184. We just spent eight weeks looking at the life of Daniel.

  185. He has this man who thoroughly engages in pagan Babylon,

  186. serving in the palace,

  187. serving their kings,

  188. really involved in serving the city of Babylon,

  189. and yet there's something so distinctive about him,

  190. that at times it almost costs him his life.

  191. And so when Paul says,

  192. do not be conformed to the patterns of this world,

  193. Paul is not saying,

  194. let's just retreat from society,

  195. and go build this Christian commune on Lama Island,

  196. and we all just live in this nice Christian bubble.

  197. No, no, engage in the world,

  198. and yet as you do so,

  199. be distinctive.

  200. Here's a second clarification.

  201. When Paul says,

  202. don't be conformed to the patterns of this world,

  203. but be transformed,

  204. he's not talking about a new moral list of behaviors,

  205. things to do.

  206. So Paul isn't saying,

  207. stop stealing,

  208. go to church.

  209. Stop gambling,

  210. read your Bible.

  211. Stop swearing,

  212. talk nicely.

  213. Okay?

  214. When Paul talks about this,

  215. he's not just talking about outward behavior,

  216. even though it will include that,

  217. he's talking about an inner transformation of our hearts.

  218. Listen to how John Piper describes this.

  219. He says,

  220. non-conformity to the world

  221. does not primarily mean

  222. the avoidance of external behaviors.

  223. It will include that, of course.

  224. But you can avoid all kinds of immoral behavior

  225. and still not be transformed in your hearts.

  226. Transformation by the mercy of God

  227. is not switching from the behavior of the world

  228. to the behavior of religion.

  229. The Christian alternative to immoral behavior

  230. is not suddenly a new list of new moral behaviors.

  231. It is the triumphant power

  232. and the transformation of the Holy Spirit

  233. through faith in Christ,

  234. by God's mercy,

  235. which transforms our inner being.

  236. Do you see what he's saying?

  237. When Paul describes the gospel-shaped,

  238. mercy-informed life

  239. and the transformation,

  240. he's not saying,

  241. stop that stuff

  242. and now do a whole lot of these things,

  243. A, B, C, D.

  244. He's saying,

  245. let your inner world,

  246. your heart,

  247. be transformed by who God is

  248. and by the grace and the mercy of God.

  249. And that's why when Scripture talks about

  250. the evidence of a transformed life,

  251. it's not go to church,

  252. put money in the offering,

  253. stop swearing.

  254. It's Jesus is this,

  255. by this will all men know

  256. that you are my disciples,

  257. that you have love for one another.

  258. Well, think of the fruit of the Spirit

  259. that Paul describes about.

  260. Unbelievable patience,

  261. kindness,

  262. faithfulness,

  263. tenderness,

  264. gentleness.

  265. This is the mark of the transformed life.

  266. Now, here's one other clarification.

  267. Here's a question for us.

  268. This radical gospel-shaped,

  269. mercy-empowered,

  270. transformed life of the heart,

  271. who do you think this is for?

  272. Is this for Christians

  273. or is this for non-Christians?

  274. Okay?

  275. Is this,

  276. is Paul talking about

  277. the transformation

  278. for those who are dead in their sin

  279. or those who are alive in Christ?

  280. Because no doubt,

  281. we have both with us this morning.

  282. Many of us here

  283. would be followers of Jesus.

  284. We've put our faith and trust in Him.

  285. He's changed us.

  286. You're born again.

  287. Some of us may be here this morning

  288. and no doubt,

  289. still on a spiritual journey.

  290. You're not yet a follower of Jesus.

  291. So who's Paul talking to?

  292. The answer is both.

  293. If you're here this morning

  294. and you're not a follower of Jesus,

  295. friends, can I tell you,

  296. the God who made you,

  297. who knit you together

  298. in your mother's womb,

  299. loves you infinitely more

  300. than you could possibly imagine

  301. or hope.

  302. But the God who made you

  303. and who loves you so much

  304. is also the God

  305. to whom you're one day

  306. going to give an account

  307. for the way that you've lived your life.

  308. Have you loved and honored Him

  309. or have you loved and honored yourself?

  310. Have you treasured and served Him

  311. or have you treasured and served yourself?

  312. Have you lived for His glory

  313. or have you lived for your own glory?

  314. This God longs to break into your life

  315. and to so transform your life

  316. to cause you to be new from the inside out.

  317. This God longs to transform you

  318. to give you a new identity

  319. and a new security.

  320. One that's not built on your performance

  321. or how people think about you,

  322. but built on the fact

  323. that you're a son or a daughter

  324. of the living God.

  325. And so if you're not a follower

  326. of Jesus this morning,

  327. God wants to transform you.

  328. But at the same time,

  329. for those of us

  330. that are followers of Jesus,

  331. Paul says that even the Christian life

  332. is not one which has merely

  333. put my faith in Jesus 30 years ago

  334. and now I just ride it out to heaven.

  335. The life of a follower of Jesus

  336. is one of constant reformation,

  337. transformation, and renewal.

  338. 500 years ago,

  339. in the time of the Reformation,

  340. remember Martin Luther,

  341. John Calvin, Zwickley, those guys,

  342. they had a Latin phrase.

  343. It was this,

  344. Sempe Reformanda.

  345. Is that right?

  346. Something like that, okay?

  347. Do you appreciate my Latin?

  348. That's about as far as it goes, right?

  349. Sempe Reformanda.

  350. And what it meant is this,

  351. always being reformed.

  352. And their concern was that

  353. the church went through

  354. this massive reformation

  355. as it changed from Catholicism

  356. and honoring the Pope

  357. to honoring Jesus.

  358. But their concern was this,

  359. that people would think,

  360. oh yeah, we reformed back then

  361. in 1519 or 1526

  362. or whenever it was

  363. and thought that was a done deal.

  364. And they said,

  365. no, the life of a Christian

  366. is always being transformed

  367. into the newness

  368. and the likeness of Jesus.

  369. Friends, if you're a follower

  370. of Jesus this morning,

  371. Jesus looks at each one of us

  372. in the eye and says,

  373. do not conform to the patterns

  374. of this world,

  375. but be transformed

  376. by the renewing of your mind.

  377. Just this week,

  378. on Tuesday evening,

  379. Oscar and I had a really good

  380. heart-to-heart conversation.

  381. I was grappling and struggling

  382. with a couple of things

  383. and Oscar came around

  384. and chatted

  385. and we protested,

  386. protested, not protested,

  387. processed,

  388. some of the ministry idolatries

  389. in my heart.

  390. Some of the things that I'm grappling,

  391. my own insecurities,

  392. and my fears.

  393. Some of the rubbish

  394. that's in my heart.

  395. And we got to pray together

  396. and talk through that.

  397. Friends, you and I

  398. need the transformative work

  399. of the power of the Holy Spirit

  400. by the mercy of God

  401. in our hearts

  402. and in our lives.

  403. This is what God calls us to

  404. by His mercy.

  405. By the mercies of God.

  406. Don't be conformed

  407. to the patterns of this world,

  408. but be transformed

  409. into the image

  410. and the likeness of Jesus.

  411. Maybe a question

  412. for those of us

  413. that are followers of Jesus

  414. this morning

  415. to stop and think about.

  416. Is our inner world,

  417. the motivations of our hearts,

  418. the deepest longings and fears,

  419. or maybe our deepest fantasies,

  420. do these look like

  421. the inner world of Jesus Christ?

  422. Or are they more shaped

  423. by the longings,

  424. the desires,

  425. the fears,

  426. and the ambitions

  427. of our culture

  428. and our world around us?

  429. By the mercies of God,

  430. do not be conformed

  431. to the patterns of this world,

  432. but be transformed

  433. into the image

  434. and the likeness of Jesus.

  435. Okay, so that's the big idea.

  436. Now the question is this,

  437. how does that actually happen?

  438. How do we go about that?

  439. And there's lots of answers,

  440. but today I want to look

  441. at just three of them.

  442. And they're three things

  443. that all kind of happen

  444. simultaneously

  445. at the same time.

  446. It happens by the mercy of God,

  447. by the renewal of our minds,

  448. and thirdly,

  449. by seeing and savoring Jesus.

  450. Okay, so let's dive into that.

  451. Firstly,

  452. by the mercies of God.

  453. I don't know if you noticed this,

  454. but look at the way

  455. that Paul writes the sentence.

  456. Paul doesn't say,

  457. don't conform to this world,

  458. but transform yourself

  459. to look like Jesus.

  460. Okay, he almost says that,

  461. but he doesn't quite.

  462. He says,

  463. don't be conformed,

  464. rather,

  465. be transformed

  466. into the image

  467. and the likeness of Christ.

  468. What's Paul saying here?

  469. He's saying,

  470. this radical transformation

  471. that takes place

  472. as a result of the gospel

  473. is not something

  474. that is done by us,

  475. it's primarily something

  476. that is done to us.

  477. Okay,

  478. do you see the distinction there?

  479. Do not be conformed,

  480. but be transformed

  481. outside of yourself

  482. by the mercy

  483. and the grace of God.

  484. This is one of the key distinctions

  485. between the gospel

  486. and formal religion.

  487. Every religion of the world

  488. will tell you,

  489. you need to change,

  490. you need to transform,

  491. you need to improve yourself.

  492. I remember a few years ago,

  493. someone came to our community group

  494. and she was in the process

  495. of becoming a Christian

  496. and her friends couldn't believe

  497. that she'd go to a Bible study

  498. on a Thursday night.

  499. And so I said,

  500. what on earth are you doing

  501. going to a Bible study

  502. on a Thursday night?

  503. And she said to them,

  504. well, you know,

  505. kind of see it as a self-improvement project.

  506. She was early on

  507. in the process

  508. of understanding the gospel.

  509. But friends,

  510. that's not what the gospel is.

  511. The gospel is not

  512. a self-improvement project.

  513. Paul doesn't say,

  514. don't conform,

  515. but improve yourself,

  516. transform yourself.

  517. Paul says,

  518. by the mercies of God,

  519. let your own heart

  520. be transformed.

  521. Every religion will tell you,

  522. seek to improve yourself,

  523. to transform yourself,

  524. to fix yourself.

  525. Moral religion will tell us,

  526. see Jesus as an example

  527. and then sort yourself out

  528. until you can be like him.

  529. The gospel tells us

  530. that transformation

  531. is not something you achieve,

  532. it's a gift that you receive

  533. by the mercies of God.

  534. Transformation of our hearts

  535. and our minds,

  536. our identities

  537. and our joys

  538. is not something

  539. that comes from within us,

  540. it's something that comes

  541. from outside of us

  542. and changes us

  543. on the inside out.

  544. And so listen to how

  545. Paul says the same thing

  546. in 2 Corinthians.

  547. He says,

  548. we all,

  549. those of us

  550. that are followers of Jesus,

  551. beholding the glory

  552. of the Lord Jesus

  553. are being transformed

  554. by him

  555. into the image of Christ

  556. by one degree of glory

  557. to the next.

  558. This comes from the Lord

  559. who is the Spirit.

  560. This happens

  561. as we yield ourselves

  562. and give ourselves

  563. to God.

  564. So here is my life

  565. and offering of worship.

  566. Friends,

  567. every religion of the world

  568. will give you instructions

  569. how to save yourself,

  570. improve yourself,

  571. fix yourself.

  572. Jesus says,

  573. come to me

  574. and let me change you,

  575. let me transform you,

  576. let me fix you.

  577. Jesus says,

  578. the problem is far more fundamental

  579. than self-improvement.

  580. Jesus says,

  581. you need to be rescued,

  582. saved,

  583. transformed and renewed.

  584. And that's what

  585. the gospel does.

  586. Okay,

  587. so the first thing is this,

  588. by the mercies of God.

  589. Second thing is this,

  590. by the renewal

  591. of our minds.

  592. Now we're going to spend

  593. the most time on this.

  594. This is a little theological,

  595. so you're going to need

  596. to follow with me,

  597. okay?

  598. So,

  599. look at what Paul says

  600. in our passage here.

  601. He says,

  602. do not be conformed

  603. to the patterns

  604. of this world,

  605. but be transformed

  606. by the renewal

  607. of your minds.

  608. By the renewal

  609. of your minds.

  610. Now why does Paul say that?

  611. What's wrong with our minds

  612. that our minds

  613. need to be renewed?

  614. Well,

  615. we tend to think

  616. that the problem

  617. with our world

  618. and the problem

  619. with ourselves

  620. is generally

  621. that we don't

  622. understand enough.

  623. We don't have enough

  624. education

  625. or enough information.

  626. And that if we can

  627. just fill our minds

  628. with the right information

  629. or the right education,

  630. we will be able

  631. to solve the problems

  632. of the world.

  633. When we were living

  634. in South Africa

  635. before Hong Kong,

  636. this was the great argument

  637. to be the problem

  638. to racism.

  639. Everyone said,

  640. listen,

  641. South Africa,

  642. we are a racist society.

  643. The problem is

  644. we don't have enough education.

  645. We don't know enough.

  646. But friends,

  647. you and I know

  648. that education

  649. is not going to solve

  650. the racism of our hearts,

  651. right?

  652. The Bible says,

  653. the Bible has a far

  654. deeper analysis

  655. of the problem

  656. of our minds.

  657. Scripture says

  658. the problem

  659. with our minds

  660. is not just

  661. that they're finite,

  662. it's that they are fallen.

  663. Okay?

  664. It's not just

  665. that our minds

  666. are dull,

  667. it's that they have

  668. been darkened

  669. as a consequence

  670. of sin

  671. in our heart

  672. and in our world.

  673. Our minds

  674. don't see the world

  675. as God has designed them.

  676. We don't think accurately.

  677. Okay?

  678. So,

  679. listen to how Paul

  680. describes it

  681. in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  682. Paul says this,

  683. Now I say to you

  684. and I testify on the Lord

  685. that you must no longer walk

  686. as the Gentiles do.

  687. So that's another way

  688. of saying

  689. don't be conformed

  690. to the patterns

  691. of this world.

  692. In the futility

  693. of their minds,

  694. they are darkened

  695. in their understanding,

  696. alienated from the life

  697. of God

  698. because of the ignorance

  699. that is in them

  700. due to the hardness

  701. of their hearts.

  702. So look at what

  703. Paul says there.

  704. He describes our thinking

  705. as becoming futile,

  706. darkened,

  707. ignorant,

  708. not just because

  709. of lack of education

  710. but because of the

  711. fallen world,

  712. the state of our hearts

  713. has corrupted our thinking.

  714. We don't see the world

  715. as God wants us

  716. to see it.

  717. Rather,

  718. he says,

  719. verse 21,

  720. be renewed

  721. in the spirit

  722. of your minds.

  723. Now that's almost

  724. identical to Romans 12.

  725. Be transformed

  726. by the renewal

  727. of your mind.

  728. Paul says in Ephesians,

  729. be renewed

  730. in the spirit

  731. of your minds.

  732. Now what does Paul mean

  733. by the spirit

  734. of our minds?

  735. What he means is this,

  736. that our minds,

  737. our thinking,

  738. has a worldview.

  739. It has a posture.

  740. It has a mindset

  741. or an attitude

  742. about it

  743. which conforms

  744. to the way

  745. of our hearts.

  746. Romans 1

  747. says the same thing,

  748. that our minds

  749. as a result

  750. of our fallen nature

  751. has become darkened,

  752. foolish,

  753. and futile.

  754. And Romans 1

  755. says this,

  756. one of the consequences

  757. of this

  758. is that we have

  759. exchanged

  760. what is true

  761. for what is false.

  762. We honor

  763. and exalt

  764. things that are false

  765. and we diminish

  766. things that are true.

  767. We are confused

  768. about the way

  769. that the world works.

  770. And Paul says

  771. the same things here.

  772. Our minds

  773. aren't just computers

  774. processing information.

  775. They have a worldview,

  776. an attitude,

  777. a posture

  778. that needs to be renewed

  779. and redeemed,

  780. that needs to be transformed

  781. and come into line

  782. with what is true.

  783. Okay,

  784. are you tracking with me?

  785. I said this was

  786. a little complicated.

  787. Are you following it?

  788. Okay.

  789. Do not be conformed,

  790. be transformed.

  791. How does this happen?

  792. One way

  793. is through the renewal

  794. of our minds.

  795. Now,

  796. we're going to go

  797. one step deeper,

  798. okay?

  799. You're going to have

  800. to follow here.

  801. How does that happen?

  802. Well,

  803. there's two ways,

  804. two things

  805. that happen simultaneously.

  806. Look at what Paul

  807. says here.

  808. Do not be conformed

  809. to this world,

  810. be transformed

  811. by the renewal

  812. of your mind

  813. so that

  814. by testing

  815. or discovering

  816. you may discern

  817. or know for yourself

  818. what is the will of God

  819. is good,

  820. acceptable,

  821. and perfect will.

  822. Okay?

  823. So let's come back

  824. to the question

  825. we said in the beginning.

  826. How many of us here

  827. have faced a situation

  828. where you've got

  829. a decision to make?

  830. Job A or job B,

  831. job C?

  832. God,

  833. what is your will?

  834. If only you'll tell me

  835. your will.

  836. How do we know

  837. what God's will is?

  838. As a pastor,

  839. that's one of the

  840. most frequent requests

  841. I get,

  842. okay?

  843. Please come and pray for me.

  844. I need to know God's will.

  845. Give me a sign,

  846. okay?

  847. Look at what Paul says here.

  848. Paul says,

  849. the normal way

  850. that the Christian

  851. discovers God's will

  852. is not normally

  853. through a supernatural sign,

  854. writing on the wall,

  855. a prophecy,

  856. a dream,

  857. a vision,

  858. or a revelation,

  859. even though

  860. all those things

  861. do happen,

  862. and they do happen,

  863. and I've had them happen.

  864. Okay,

  865. not the writing on the wall.

  866. That hasn't happened to me.

  867. But those other things

  868. have happened.

  869. Those are good.

  870. But the way,

  871. the main way

  872. that we know God's will

  873. is not through

  874. some supernatural revelation,

  875. but rather,

  876. the usual way

  877. we know God's will

  878. is having our minds

  879. and our thinking

  880. and our worldview

  881. renewed by the gospel,

  882. and then as we live that out

  883. and act it out,

  884. we discover God's will

  885. in the process.

  886. Okay?

  887. So this is actually

  888. how we discover

  889. and walk in God's will.

  890. Not by supernatural revelation

  891. primarily,

  892. but through testing

  893. or discovering God's will

  894. as we allow our thinking

  895. and our worldview

  896. to be renewed

  897. and shaped by Him

  898. and the gospel,

  899. and as we live that out

  900. and take a step of faith

  901. trying to live

  902. the gospel-centered life.

  903. Okay?

  904. So,

  905. hopefully this will make sense

  906. in a few minutes.

  907. Now, just by the way,

  908. I am a charismatic.

  909. I do pray in tongues.

  910. I do believe in prophecy

  911. and visions and dreams

  912. and all those things.

  913. Those are good things.

  914. They're in the Bible

  915. and we should pursue them.

  916. But here's the key.

  917. Many Christians

  918. want a crystal ball.

  919. And God often,

  920. we want a Christian ball

  921. so that God will tell us

  922. what to do.

  923. Take path A,

  924. not path B.

  925. But God wants to give us

  926. a renewed mind

  927. and a transformed heart,

  928. not just a crystal ball answer.

  929. Does that make sense?

  930. And so we come and say,

  931. God, I've got a job A, job B.

  932. You just tell me

  933. and I'll know your will

  934. and then I'll walk in it.

  935. Your good, pleasing,

  936. and perfect will.

  937. But God doesn't want to give us

  938. a crystal ball answer.

  939. He wants to give us

  940. a renewed mind

  941. and a transformed heart.

  942. And so that's why he says,

  943. I want you to trust me.

  944. And here's the reason why.

  945. If God gave us

  946. a crystal ball,

  947. something that would just

  948. magically tell us

  949. His will in each

  950. and every situation,

  951. that wouldn't require

  952. a transformed heart at all.

  953. In fact,

  954. so deceitful is the human heart

  955. that what we would end up doing

  956. is we would use God

  957. for our own glory.

  958. Say, okay, God,

  959. what is the answer?

  960. Take path A.

  961. Great.

  962. Now I can take this job

  963. and I'll be more happy,

  964. more comfortable for my glory.

  965. We will use God

  966. rather than serve Him.

  967. But God wants a transformed heart

  968. and a renewed mind.

  969. God wants us to know His will.

  970. He's not trying to hide it from us,

  971. but He wants us to discover it

  972. as our hearts and minds

  973. are renewed

  974. according to the gospel

  975. as we come to Him

  976. and trust Him.

  977. So let's look at this verse

  978. once again.

  979. Do not be conformed

  980. to the patterns of this world.

  981. Be transformed

  982. in the image

  983. and the likeness of Jesus

  984. by the renewal of your mind

  985. so that by testing

  986. or discovering

  987. you may discern for yourself

  988. what is the will of God,

  989. His good, acceptable,

  990. and pleasing will.

  991. So,

  992. here's one more question

  993. and I'm going to give us an example.

  994. The transformed life,

  995. does it primarily happen

  996. through theology

  997. or pragmatics?

  998. Some of us,

  999. and I'm one of these people,

1000. I just want the theology, right?

1001. Just tell me what to believe

  1002. and I'll sort out

  1003. the practicalities.

  1004. Some of us

  1005. don't really care

  1006. about the theology,

1007. just tell me what to do, right?

1008. Tell me what God's will is

1009. so I can walk in it.

  1010. The answer is

  1011. it happens through both.

1012. As our minds are renewed

  1013. according to the gospel

  1014. and as we practically

  1015. live that out,

  1016. we discover God's will,

  1017. our minds get renewed

  1018. and our hearts

  1019. get transformed.

1020. It's kind of like a bicycle, right?

1021. You've got these two things

  1022. at the same time.

  1023. Renewed theology,

  1024. renewed mind,

1025. living according to God's will.

  1026. Renewed mind,

1027. living according to God's will.

1028. So let me give you

  1029. a practical example

  1030. of how I think

  1031. this works out.

  1032. Let's say,

  1033. for instance,

  1034. my marriage to Claire

  1035. is characterized

  1036. by defensiveness,

  1037. outbursts of anger,

  1038. and frustration

  1039. on my behalf, okay?

  1040. So I'm a husband

  1041. that Claire's always

  1042. walking on eggshells

  1043. because whenever

  1044. something happens,

  1045. I freak out

  1046. and I'm defensive

  1047. and I'm always angry

  1048. with her

  1049. and I'm always convinced

  1050. it's her fault, right?

  1051. I have a friend like this.

1052. This week he told me

  1053. I've been married twice,

1054. both to the same person.

1055. The first half of our marriage

  1056. was horrible.

  1057. God changed my life.

1058. The second half of the marriage

  1059. has been glorious, right?

1060. The first half of my marriage,

  1061. he said,

1062. well, I was always angry,

  1063. I was always defensive,

  1064. always frustrated,

  1065. and I was convinced

1066. it was always my wife's fault.

  1067. So let's imagine

  1068. that's our situation.

  1069. Now, hopefully,

1070. you can ask Claire later.

1071. Hopefully that's not the case

  1072. in our home.

  1073. If it is,

  1074. Jesus changed me, okay?

1075. So let's say my home

  1076. characterized by anger,

  1077. outbursts of frustration,

  1078. defensiveness,

  1079. and I'm convinced

  1080. it's her fault.

1081. And one day I'm reading

  1082. my Bible

  1083. and I read Ephesians chapter 5

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1084. and the penny drops.

  1085. Husbands,

  1086. love your wives

1087. as Christ loved the church.

  1088. And suddenly I realize,

  1089. oh my goodness,

  1090. Christ's love for me

  1091. is so tender

  1092. He's so patient.

  1093. He's so gentle.

  1094. Jesus is so long-suffering

  1095. with all the rubbish

  1096. in my heart.

  1097. Jesus doesn't point

  1098. His finger at me

  1099. and tell me

  1100. I'm a dirty,

  1101. rotten scoundrel.

  1102. He welcomes me

  1103. with arms.

  1104. Jesus floods me

  1105. with unbelievable grace.

  1106. How selfless

  1107. and tender

1108. is His love for me.

  1109. How great

1110. is the mercy of Jesus.

  1111. And then I think

  1112. about how selfish

  1113. and self-centered

  1114. I've been

  1115. in my relationship

  1116. to Claire.

  1117. And so my thinking,

  1118. my worldview

  1119. gets renewed

  1120. according to the gospel.

  1121. And I realize

  1122. I've been a rubbish husband.

  1123. And I say,

  1124. I don't want to be

  1125. that kind of husband.

  1126. And so

  1127. some kind of transformation

  1128. takes place

  1129. in my heart

  1130. according to the renewal

  1131. of my mind

1132. by the mercies of God.

  1133. And so then

  1134. the next time

  1135. I mess up

  1136. and Claire says,

  1137. hey,

  1138. you said you were

  1139. going to do this

  1140. rather than saying,

  1141. well,

  1142. do you know

  1143. what you did wrong?

  1144. Because I've been transformed,

  1145. I catch myself

  1146. and I say,

  1147. Jesus help me.

  1148. And I say,

  1149. you know what,

  1150. love,

  1151. you're right.

  1152. I said I was going

  1153. to do that

  1154. and I didn't.

  1155. I'm sorry.

  1156. Please forgive me.

  1157. And Claire falls off

  1158. her chair

  1159. because she's never

  1160. experienced a husband

  1161. like this.

  1162. And suddenly

1163. over the next few weeks

  1164. and months

1165. my heart starts to change

  1166. because actually

  1167. it's nicer living

1168. in a home like that.

  1169. And Claire starts

  1170. to transform

  1171. because she's not

  1172. so defensive

  1173. wondering about her

  1174. husband that's always

1175. going to lash out at her.

  1176. And suddenly

  1177. I actually realize

  1178. it's quite nice

1179. to be a nice husband.

  1180. And actually

  1181. sometimes

  1182. we learn to laugh

  1183. about the mistakes

  1184. that I make

  1185. rather than accusing her.

  1186. What's happened

  1187. there?

  1188. By the mercies

  1189. of God

  1190. my thinking

  1191. has been renewed

  1192. my heart

  1193. has been transformed

  1194. okay it's the bicycle

  1195. as I start

  1196. to live that out

  1197. my thinking

  1198. gets renewed

  1199. I start to live

  1200. that out more

  1201. my thinking

  1202. gets renewed

  1203. and my heart

  1204. gets transformed

  1205. by the gospel.

  1206. Does that make sense?

  1207. So here's what

  1208. Paul's saying

  1209. as our thinking

  1210. is renewed

  1211. by the gospel

  1212. by the mercy

  1213. of God

  1214. we start to believe

  1215. that

  1216. we live it out

  1217. we walk it out

  1218. we test it

  1219. we discern

  1220. for ourselves

  1221. what is God's will

  1222. we discover

  1223. the beauty

  1224. and the pleasure

  1225. of God's will

  1226. which then renews

  1227. and revitalizes

  1228. our mind

  1229. and our thinking

  1230. we walk that out

  1231. we discover

  1232. the beauty

  1233. and the pleasure

  1234. of God's will

  1235. that renews

  1236. our thinking

1237. we then walk it out

  1238. and our hearts

  1239. get transformed.

  1240. Friends

  1241. God's will

  1242. for our marriages

  1243. and our parenting

  1244. for the way

  1245. we handle money

  1246. and sexuality

  1247. and work

  1248. for our attitude

  1249. to the poor

  1250. and the way

  1251. we handle

  1252. and steward

  1253. the environment

  1254. every aspect

  1255. of our life

  1256. God wants

  1257. our thinking

  1258. renewed

  1259. according to

  1260. his will

  1261. to be shaped

  1262. by the gospel

  1263. by the mercies

  1264. of God

  1265. do not be conformed

  1266. be transformed

  1267. by the renewal

  1268. of your mind.

  1269. Okay

  1270. practically

  1271. let me give us

  1272. two very practical

  1273. applications of this

  1274. okay

  1275. the first one

  1276. is this

  1277. if you're a Christian

  1278. this morning

  1279. even if you're not

  1280. a Christian

  1281. okay

  1282. you must

  1283. get into scripture

  1284. every single day

  1285. don't let a day

  1286. go by

  1287. without getting

  1288. into memorizing

  1289. knowing

  1290. feasting

  1291. on God's word

  1292. and here's why

  1293. because every day

  1294. our minds

  1295. are being renewed

  1296. according to the

  1297. worldview

  1298. of our culture

1299. you go to the office

  1300. your colleagues

  1301. the news

  1302. Bloomberg

  1303. the boss

  1304. they are all

  1305. conforming

  1306. our thinking

  1307. to our culture

  1308. saying invest

  1309. in this fund

  1310. more money

  1311. you'll be happier

  1312. rah rah rah rah

  1313. and unless

1314. we are day by day

  1315. being transformed

  1316. by the truth

  1317. of God's word

  1318. we'll be conformed

  1319. by the patterns

  1320. of this world

  1321. friends

  1322. can I say this

  1323. if we think

  1324. that one hour

  1325. a week

  1326. on a Sunday morning

  1327. coming to church

1328. is going to be enough

  1329. to transform

  1330. our minds

  1331. and to transform

  1332. our hearts

  1333. we've lost

  1334. the battle

  1335. there's no way

  1336. that one hour

  1337. a week

  1338. on a Sunday

  1339. morning

  1340. is going to

  1341. stand up

  1342. to 80 hours

  1343. a week

  1344. in the marketplace

  1345. friends

  1346. every day

  1347. get into

  1348. God's word

  1349. let God's word

  1350. renew your thinking

  1351. according to the

  1352. mercies of God

  1353. and transform

  1354. your heart

  1355. so that we're not

  1356. conformed to the

  1357. patterns of this

  1358. world

  1359. but transformed

  1360. to the likeness

  1361. of Jesus

  1362. I had a whole

  1363. lot of examples

  1364. of that

  1365. but I'm going

  1366. to leave that

  1367. here's the second

  1368. one

  1369. parents

  1370. and especially

  1371. Chris and Sam

  1372. and Nando

  1373. and Emmanuel

  1374. and who else

  1375. am I leaving out

  1376. Peter

  1377. parents

  1378. don't just focus

  1379. on your kids

  1380. education

  1381. education

  1382. is a wonderful

  1383. thing

  1384. it's a great

  1385. gift from God

  1386. I'm busy

  1387. trying to grind

  1388. out

  1389. theology

  1390. degree

  1391. at the moment

  1392. education

  1393. is a good

  1394. thing

  1395. but what Paul

  1396. is telling us

  1397. here

  1398. is education

  1399. is not going

  1400. to be the tool

  1401. to redeem

  1402. our world

  1403. we don't just

  1404. need

  1405. our minds

  1406. aren't just

  1407. computers

  1408. that need

  1409. more information

  1410. our minds

  1411. need to be

  1412. renewed

  1413. according

  1414. to the gospel

  1415. and so parents

  1416. can I plead

  1417. with you

  1418. teach your

  1419. children

  1420. the gospel

  1421. make sure

  1422. that you're

  1423. praying the gospel

  1424. for them

  1425. that you're

  1426. washing them

  1427. with the gospel

  1428. you're flooding

  1429. them with the gospel

  1430. parents

  1431. demonstrate the gospel

  1432. live out the gospel

  1433. let your kids

  1434. see

  1435. and experience

  1436. and taste

  1437. what it lives

  1438. what it feels

  1439. like

1440. to live in a home

  1441. that is shaped

  1442. by the mercy

  1443. of God

  1444. let them see

  1445. you confessing

  1446. your sin

  1447. and saying sorry

  1448. to your wife

  1449. or your husband

  1450. or to your kids

  1451. and can I just

  1452. say

  1453. while I'm on this

  1454. men

  1455. especially you

  1456. men

  1457. you the head

  1458. of your home

  1459. you the leader

  1460. of your family

  1461. you take the

  1462. initiative

  1463. to shape

  1464. your home

  1465. and your family

  1466. according to the gospel

  1467. and the mercy

  1468. of God

  1469. make sure your kids

1470. don't just fill their minds

  1471. with a great education

  1472. let their minds

  1473. be renewed

  1474. according

  1475. to the mercies

  1476. of God

  1477. so that our kids

  1478. will want to see

  1479. and know

  1480. and taste

  1481. the will of God

  1482. his good pleasing

  1483. and perfect will

  1484. all the days

  1485. of their lives

  1486. okay

  1487. is that alright

  1488. okay

  1489. so

  1490. how

  1491. our hearts

  1492. transformed

  1493. by the mercies

  1494. of God

  1495. by a renewed

  1496. mind

  1497. thirdly

  1498. by seeing

  1499. and savoring

  1500. Jesus

  1501. and this is

  1502. really quick

1503. we write at the end

  1504. look again

  1505. at 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1506. chapter 3

  1507. with me

  1508. this is the

  1509. corollary verse

  1510. to Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1511. Paul writes this

  1512. and says

  1513. we

  1514. beholding

  1515. the glory

  1516. of the Lord Jesus

  1517. beholding means

  1518. to see

  1519. and to savor

  1520. to see

  1521. with the eyes

  1522. of our heart

  1523. we

  1524. beholding

  1525. Jesus

  1526. are being

  1527. transformed

  1528. into the same

  1529. image

  1530. from one degree

  1531. of glory

  1532. to the next

  1533. so how does

  1534. transformation

  1535. happen

  1536. by seeing

  1537. and savoring

  1538. Jesus

  1539. friends

  1540. can I ask you

  1541. are you

  1542. beholding

  1543. are you

  1544. beholding

  1545. the wonder

  1546. of Jesus

  1547. friends

  1548. are we

  1549. as a church

  1550. shaped

  1551. are we

  1552. a church

  1553. that is

  1554. seeing

  1555. the

  1556. infinite

  1557. glory

  1558. of who

  1559. Jesus

  1560. is

  1561. are we

  1562. beholding

  1563. how wonderful

  1564. he is

  1565. are we

  1566. delighting

  1567. and rejoicing

  1568. in the mercy

  1569. of God

  1570. in the work

  1571. of Christ

  1572. are we

  1573. day by day

  1574. morning by

  1575. morning

  1576. in the

  1577. busyness

  1578. of life

  1579. in the rush

  1580. of life

  1581. in the

  1582. pressures

  1583. of life

  1584. are we

  1585. beholding

  1586. and being

  1587. mesmerized

  1588. by the

  1589. wonder

  1590. of Jesus

  1591. Paul says

  1592. that as we

  1593. see Jesus

  1594. and what he

  1595. did on the

  1596. cross

  1597. as we

  1598. understand

  1599. the mercies

  1600. and the grace

  1601. of God

  1602. Christ will

  1603. transform our

  1604. hearts

  1605. more and more

  1606. to become

  1607. more and more

  1608. like Jesus

  1609. friends in view

  1610. of his mercies

  1611. in view of

  1612. Christ's

  1613. unceasing

  1614. grace

  1615. in view

  1616. of his

  1617. never

  1618. ending

  1619. mercy

  1620. to us

  1621. in view

  1622. of his

  1623. unfathomable

  1624. tenderness

  1625. and his

  1626. astounding

  1627. sacrifice

  1628. on the

  1629. cross

  1630. do not

  1631. be conformed

  1632. to the

  1633. patterns

  1634. of this

  1635. world

  1636. to the

  1637. decaying

  1638. suicidal

  1639. death

  1640. patterns

  1641. of this

  1642. world

  1643. no friends

  1644. be transformed

  1645. into the

  1646. image of

  1647. Jesus

  1648. by the

  1649. renewing

  1650. of your

  1651. minds

  1652. by the

  1653. spirit

  1654. so that

  1655. by testing

  1656. and living

  1657. the gospel

  1658. shaped life

  1659. you may

  1660. discover

  1661. for yourself

  1662. what is

  1663. the will

  1664. of God

  1665. his good

  1666. pleasing

  1667. and perfect

  1668. will

  1669. let's pray

  1670. together

  1671. in fact

  1672. maybe we can

  1673. just take a few

  1674. moments

  1675. just to

  1676. respond

  1677. in our own

  1678. hearts

  1679. in prayer

  1680. what does it

  1681. look like

  1682. for us to

  1683. respond to

  1684. God's word

  1685. this morning

  1686. for some

  1687. of us

  1688. it might be

  1689. praise

  1690. and adoration

  1691. God

  1692. thank you

  1693. for your

  1694. incredible

  1695. mercy

  1696. I can't

  1697. believe it

  1698. a sinner

  1699. like me

  1700. that you

  1701. would die

  1702. for me

  1703. Jesus

  1704. your mercy

  1705. is amazing

  1706. praise you

  1707. God

  1708. for some

  1709. of us

  1710. it's going

  1711. to be

  1712. reflection

  1713. confession

  1714. repentance

  1715. for some

  1716. of us

  1717. we need

  1718. to say

  1719. God

  1720. actually

  1721. my life

  1722. looks more

  1723. like the

  1724. world

  1725. than you

  1726. my thinking

  1727. my world

  1728. view

  1729. is conformed

  1730. to the

  1731. ethos

  1732. of this

  1733. world

  1734. more

  1735. than the

  1736. gospel

  1737. Jesus

  1738. I'm

  1739. sorry

  1740. come and

  1741. change

  1742. me

  1743. come and

  1744. transform

  1745. me

  1746. from the

  1747. inside

  1748. out

  1749. for some

  1750. of us

  1751. friends

  1752. it's

  1753. trust

  1754. and

  1755. obedience

  1756. we just

  1757. need to

  1758. live out

  1759. what he's

  1760. told us

  1761. to do

  1762. we need

  1763. to say

  1764. no to

  1765. that sin

  1766. and yes

  1767. to Christ

  1768. what does

  1769. response

  1770. look like

  1771. for you

  1772. Lord

  1773. Jesus

  1774. Christ

  1775. Lord

  1776. Jesus

  1777. Christ

  1778. heavenly

  1779. father

  1780. holy

  1781. spirit

  1782. three

  1783. in

  1784. one

  1785. God

  1786. we

  1787. are

  1788. astounded

  1789. at who

  1790. you are

  1791. and your

  1792. incredible

  1793. mercy

  1794. thank you

  1795. for your

  1796. unceasing

  1797. grace

  1798. love

  1799. your

  1800. indescribable

  1801. love

  1802. for us

  1803. God

  1804. thank you

  1805. for the

  1806. gospel

  1807. Jesus

  1808. thank you

  1809. that you

  1810. don't just

  1811. save us

  1812. and then you

  1813. leave us

  1814. to our

  1815. own

  1816. devices

  1817. you

  1818. continually

  1819. work on

  1820. us

  1821. reforming

  1822. us

  1823. shaping

  1824. us

  1825. helping

  1826. us

  1827. renewing

  1828. us

  1829. ransomed

  1830. healed

  1831. restored

  1832. forgiven

  1833. thank you

  1834. Jesus

  1835. come and

  1836. continue

  1837. to transform

  1838. our hearts

  1839. God

  1840. won't you

  1841. shape us

  1842. individually

  1843. and as a

  1844. church

  1845. to be more

  1846. like you

  1847. Jesus

  1848. may we

  1849. be transformed

  1850. more and

  1851. more to the

  1852. image and

  1853. the likeness

  1854. of Christ

  1855. Holy Spirit

  1856. I pray

  1857. come and

  1858. work on

  1859. our hearts

  1860. now

  1861. lead us

  1862. to repentance

  1863. lead us

  1864. to faith

  1865. in you

  1866. help us

  1867. to trust

  1868. you

  1869. to love

  1870. you

  1871. to obey

  1872. you

  1873. to have

  1874. our lives

  1875. shaped by

  1876. you

  1877. and by

  1878. the mercies

  1879. of God

  1880. we pray

  1881. in your

  1882. awesome

  1883. and your

  1884. wonderful

  1885. name

  1886. amen
