  1. right so right towards the the back of our bibles the letter of first peter chapter 1

    1 Peter 1:13–21

  2. verses 13 to 21 so we've been thinking together as a church for the last number of weeks

  3. about what is the gospel what do we believe about the gospel and then what kind of life

  4. should that create in an individual and in a church last week we thought about humility

  5. that as we think about all that jesus has done for us that it should humble us and cause us to

  6. humbly seek to serve others this week the gospel creates holiness so we're going to read first

    1 Peter 1:13–21

  7. peter 1 verse 13 to 21 and let's again hear god's word therefore with minds that are alert and fully

  8. sober set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when jesus christ is revealed at his coming

  9. as obedient children do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance

  10. but just as he who called you is holy so be holy in all you do for it is written be holy because i

  11. am holy since you call on a father who judges each person's work impartially live out your time as

  12. foreigners here in reverent fear for you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or

  13. gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors

  14. but with the precious blood of christ a lamb without blemish or defect he was chosen before the

  15. creation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake through him you believe in god

  16. who raised him from the dead and glorified him and so your faith and hope are in god amen

  17. so as we begin i want us to think about the life of an exile some of you will be very familiar with

  18. the highland clearances a very dark period in scottish history in the mid 19th century when people who had

  19. worked the land for generations were forcibly removed to make way for sheep that were more profitable and so

  20. they were sent off on ships off to the new world to america and places like that and as they went

  21. they sang songs and they wrote poetry and those songs and that poetry spoke of lament and it spoke of loss

  22. the loss of a home that the vast majority of them would never ever see again but one of the interesting

  23. things to know about these highlanders who who were forced to leave is that they kept preserved their

  24. culture and their identity they retained their language they retained their practices they lived as

  25. exiled highlanders and and pushing 200 years later you can still find communities of exiled highlanders

  26. around the world and they will still be engaged in highland games and the light peter is writing to the

  27. christian church here and he says to them in chapter 1 in verse 1 you are god's elect you are exiles

  28. so the church are told you are exiles of heaven heaven is your true home he was writing to a group of

  29. christians who were because of their faith living on the margins of society beginning to feel the squeeze

  30. of opposition and so he writes this letter to encourage them to say keep your culture and your identity

  31. identity the culture of heaven the identity that you have because you've been saved by jesus set your

  32. hearts on him and live holy lives in ephesians chapter 1 and verse 4 when paul writes paul writes a letter

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  33. to a different church he reminds them in his introduction that one of the reasons jesus came and died to save

  34. people was to save people was to save people holy and that's what we're going to think about today

  35. this reality that if we are a people who treasure god's saving grace

  36. then we will care deeply to pursue holiness knowing that without holiness it's impossible to see god

  37. and just as peter writes this letter to encourage these exiles of heaven in the backdrop of their

  38. cultural chaos so we find ourselves in the 21st century still surrounded by cultural chaos but being

  39. called to live out our identity as citizens of heaven to live a culture of faith and hope and love

  40. to live in god's grace and to live out of god's truth as we find it in god's word

  41. and so we're going to think about this reality that one of the goals for which jesus came and died

  42. is so that churches and christians would be committed to the gospel of god's grace and committed to pursuing

  43. godliness and holiness and holiness and we're going to think about what that means this idea of being

  44. set apart for god and set apart to live in obedience to him there are three things from our reading in

  45. verses 13 to 21 i want to draw your attention to in thinking about um being holy the first is this to be

  46. holy we need to fix our hope on jesus so look with me again at verse 13 where we're told therefore

  47. with minds that are alert and fully sober set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when jesus

  48. christ is revealed at his coming so the verse begins with a therefore and whenever there's a therefore we

  49. ask what's the there for therefore and it's there to connect us to this great section of thanksgiving

  50. that we didn't read in verses 3 to 12 but if you look with me at verse 3 begins with praise praise

  51. be to the god and father of our lord jesus christ and then it goes on in his great mercy he has given

  52. us new birth into a living hope and that living hope comes through the resurrection of jesus christ from

  53. the dead so because jesus is alive christians have a living hope and the rest of this thanksgiving

  54. it speaks about the promise of eternal rewards the promise of future salvation the reality of life

  55. with christ this is our living hope and peter then says therefore because these things are true because

  56. this hope is is real therefore set your hope fully on grace still to come set your hope on future grace

  57. set your hope on the return of christ make the goal of your life be the desire to see jesus and to be with

  58. jesus and to enjoy jesus forever and he says then because of the resurrection

  59. you can bank on this hope this future hope this isn't wishful thinking this is certain hope based on

  60. the historic event of the resurrection because jesus is alive we have living hope and so the

  61. question then becomes well what does this future hope have to do with how i live today how does this

  62. future hope of of the return of jesus make a difference to my life of obedience and holiness

  63. let's go back to verse 13 where peter in a sense reminds us that holiness is a battle for the mind and for

  64. the will our holiness will involve right thinking so peter says to them you know therefore wait with hope

  65. but he also tells them to wait with minds that are alert and fully sober wait with hope wait with holiness

  66. the idea of alerts is the idea of being ready for action being ready for battle

  67. the idea of being fully sober the idea of thinking clearly living self-controlled lives

  68. recognizing the battle for holiness

  69. is a battle for our minds

  70. thinking about this first i started thinking about those images that we see in the news from time to time

  71. of when maybe a reporter goes

  72. um on a tour with with let's say un peacekeepers you know so they're in hostile territory

  73. um and they're they're maybe in the armored convoy and what do you see there you see

  74. soldiers who've got their bulletproof vests on they've got their helmets on and you see them

  75. constantly scanning the horizon they are fully alert because they know an attack could come from any

  76. corner from anywhere

  77. and so for us in the battle with holiness we need to be alert and fully sober

  78. jesus told a whole range of parables on that theme of be ready be watchful be serving

  79. always in light of the fact that he is the king he is the master

  80. who will one day return

  81. and he wants to find

  82. his servants doing his will

  83. so because we know jesus is coming back

  84. we are to choose the way of obedience

  85. so as christians we put on the full armor of god

  86. as christians we are to stay alert to temptation and spiritual attack some of that comes from within

  87. that battle that rages because of our sinful nature

  88. but also those temptations that come from outside of us

  89. temptations that we see in the world temptation that comes from the devil

  90. we wait with hope and we wait with holiness

  91. our future hope our future home in heaven what's that going to be like

  92. it's going to be a holy place heaven is a holy place there is no sin in heaven

  93. there is no anger in heaven there is no jealousy in heaven there is no pride in heaven

  94. so if our hope is a holy place then we're being asked to live holy lives in preparation for that

  95. that's what jesus has secured for us

  96. that's what we're being prepared for

  97. and so we're called to live holy lives

  98. and bearing in mind that this is a battle for our mind and for our will

  99. one of the things that we need to learn as christians

  100. is constantly to be talking to ourselves

  101. in the sense of preaching the gospel to ourselves

  102. when we find ourselves in a moment of temptation

  103. in a moment of trial we need to talk to ourselves

  104. to remind ourselves jesus is better and his reward is greater than what this temptation is offering me

  105. when we are going through trials we need to remember following jesus and his reward is absolutely worth it

  106. we need to let the word of christ dwell in us richly so that when we are faced with a decision

  107. we're asking the question how am i going to obey jesus and his word in this moment

  108. so we need to talk to ourselves if we are to pursue holiness

  109. there's one image and if our projectors were working we would we would have sung about christ our sure and steady anchor

  110. but but think about this if our hope anchors on something

  111. you know we all want our life to to be governed by something we're all living for something

  112. so if our hope is anchored and that anchor connects us to what we love most

  113. if it ties us to that sets the pattern for our life

  114. one question that we always need to be asking and reflecting

  115. where is my hope today

  116. where is my hope anchored today what's the focus for my life

  117. and peter is saying to us to be holy

  118. is to have our hope fully anchored in jesus and his grace

  119. there'd be that gravitational pull towards him

  120. that he would be directing the course of our lives towards love and holiness

  121. motivated by the reality of future hope and future reward

  122. so to be holy we are to fix our hope on jesus

  123. he's thinking about our minds

  124. to be holy secondly we are to fix our identity

  125. on jesus this is verses 14 to 17

  126. so again just to think big picture for a moment

  127. to ask the question why did if you're a christian why did god save you

  128. if you're not a christian why would god save you what would be his purpose in saving you

  129. why does god in the gospel take an enemy of god

  130. somebody deserving of god's wrath

  131. why does god send his son jesus to die for us

  132. to take god's wrath for us

  133. to reconcile us to himself

  134. to justify us to adopt us into his family

  135. why does he do it

  136. again to go back to the book of ephesians

  137. in part to make us holy

  138. we have a new life

  139. and we have a new identity

  140. first peter chapter 2 verse 9 if you turn over a page

    1 Peter 2:9

  141. you will find this wonderful description

  142. used of the old testament believer

  143. used of the new testament believer

  144. you are a chosen people

  145. a royal priesthood

  146. a holy nation

  147. god's special possession

  148. that you may declare the praises of him

  149. who called you out of darkness

  150. into his wonderful light

  151. totally transformed identity

  152. to reflect to display the glory of god

  153. to draw others to him

  154. so think about this for a first century christian

  155. so all of the folks that peter is writing to

  156. so if he's writing to

  157. people who've recently become followers of jesus

  158. from a jewish background

  159. they are absolutely outsiders in their community

  160. they're not believing that the law saves them

  161. they're not doing the same rituals

  162. they're not using the food laws in the same way perhaps

  163. but if he's writing to people who've been saved

  164. and they're from a roman background

  165. they're also outsiders in roman culture

  166. because they're not saying caesar's lord

  167. they're saying jesus is lord

  168. they're not worshipping a whole bunch of different idols

  169. they're worshipping the one true and living god

  170. through jesus his son

  171. and so they are beginning to feel the weight

  172. of being outsiders

  173. to be pushed to the margins

  174. this is part of the cost of discipleship

  175. and some of us know this

  176. perhaps if we're the only christian in our family

  177. perhaps we're christians from a part of the world

  178. where it's very difficult

  179. to be a follower of jesus

  180. and so we feel the weight of this

  181. so the question then is this

  182. well why

  183. why be holy

  184. if it's going to mean things like

  185. mockery

  186. if it's going to mean that

  187. the faith that we have is going to be misunderstood

  188. if perhaps it's going to be missing out on certain things

  189. missing out on certain friendships

  190. missing out on certain promotions perhaps

  191. or

  192. to go even more extreme

  193. and to think about

  194. people all around the world

  195. why be holy if it means

  196. being sent to prison

  197. why be holy if it means

  198. your whole family and community

  199. want nothing to do with you

  200. and in fact would like to kill you

  201. why be holy

  202. and so peter wants to encourage

  203. a group of believers

  204. who are feeling the weight of that

  205. and what he wants to encourage them with

  206. is to remember their true identity

  207. saying to them

  208. be who you truly are in christ

  209. so let's see how he says that

  210. what is our identity

  211. as christians

  212. peter says in verse 14

  213. you are obedient children

  214. as obedient children

  215. do not conform to the evil desires

  216. you had when you lived in ignorance

  217. but just as he has called you as holy

  218. so be holy

  219. in all you do

  220. that's who we're called to be

  221. obedient children

  222. living holy lives

  223. because the father who called us is holy

  224. so we read earlier in leviticus

  225. and leviticus

  226. in 19 verse 2

  227. be holy because i am holy

  228. is something of a motto verse

  229. in the book of leviticus

  230. so the old testament israelites

  231. they were chosen by god's grace

  232. and they were set apart

  233. among the nations

  234. to be his people

  235. to live lives of worship

  236. and obedience

  237. and because they were god's people

  238. and because god is holy

  239. they were told to be holy

  240. and the same is absolutely true

  241. of the church in every age and generation

  242. it's made plain in first peter 2 verse 9

    1 Peter 2:9

  243. and so because that's true

  244. that peter says in verse 14

  245. we are no longer

  246. to conform to our evil desires

  247. why

  248. because that's no longer who we truly are

  249. so so we don't

  250. get comfortable with sin anymore

  251. and we don't let the world

  252. squeeze us into its mold

  253. rather we show sin

  254. no mercy

  255. and we determine to live in faith

  256. and obedience

  257. so peter says to them

  258. you know just as

  259. as children physically

  260. share the characteristics

  261. of their parents

  262. for better or for worse

  263. just as children learn by copying

  264. and just as we expect children

  265. to take on the family values

  266. that they've been brought up in

  267. so it is in god's family

  268. our god is a holy father

  269. his children must be holy

  270. that is an essential family value

  271. within god's church

  272. sometimes we ask the question

  273. and it's an important question

  274. what's the will of god for my life

  275. well again

  276. paul cuts through a lot of that confusion

  277. in first thessalonians 4 verse 3

    1 Thessalonians 4:3

  278. when he says

  279. it is god's will

  280. that you be sanctified

  281. that you be set apart

  282. and that you live holy lives

  283. it's god's desire

  284. for his children

  285. verse 17

  286. since you call on a father

  287. who judges each person's work impartially

  288. live out your time as foreigners here

  289. in reverent fear

  290. so just as jesus our elder brother

  291. lived his life determined at every point

  292. to honour his father

  293. and to obey his commands

  294. and to fear god

  295. rather than live with the fear of man

  296. and to follow the law of love at every turn

  297. so he sets a pattern for us

  298. as his brothers and sisters in the church

  299. so we understand that when my identity

  300. it is shaped by jesus

  301. that has implications for how i live and act and speak

  302. i want to please my father in heaven

  303. i want to follow in the footsteps of jesus

  304. remembering jesus is our saviour

  305. but not just our saviour

  306. he is also our role model

  307. he shows us what holiness looks like

  308. and we're reminded in verses 17

  309. in verse 17

  310. that when i fear and honour

  311. my father in heaven

  312. it's his judgment of me that counts

  313. it's his opinion of me that counts

  314. he is the one whose approval i want to live for

  315. and by extension that means living as a foreigner in the world

  316. because this world is not our true home

  317. so to be holy we need to fix our identity

  318. on who we truly are

  319. and so we need to again

  320. learn to talk to ourselves

  321. who am i

  322. you know there are so many voices in our culture

  323. that want to tell us who we are

  324. as christians we need to hear

  325. god speak in his word

  326. saying to us

  327. if you are in christ

  328. you're a new creation

  329. if you are in christ

  330. you're a child of god

  331. if you are in christ

  332. you are saved

  333. to be holy

  334. and don't we see how this matters then

  335. for our everyday life

  336. so leviticus 19

  337. see how comprehensive

  338. god's view of holiness is

  339. our words

  340. our actions

  341. our relationships

  342. our workplace

  343. our sense of justice

  344. and mercy

  345. and care for the poor

  346. all wrapped up in

  347. the reality that i'm an obedient child of god

  348. and so i want to live

  349. his way

  350. so we pursue holiness

  351. peter says

  352. so that we can honor

  353. our holy father

  354. but we also

  355. choose holiness

  356. for the sake of our mission

  357. we could go back to first peter 2

    1 Peter 2:9

  358. verse 9

  359. for a moment

  360. where he tells

  361. tells him

  362. this is who you are

  363. this is how you are to live

  364. so that you may declare

  365. god's praises

  366. for the sake of the world

  367. who is watching

  368. we need to show people

  369. truly

  370. what is god like

  371. is jesus good

  372. and true

  373. we also remember

  374. the words of the great commission

  375. matthew 28

  376. jesus said

  377. go and make disciples

  378. of all nations

  379. and after talking about

  380. baptizing people

  381. he said

  382. teaching them to observe

  383. and to obey

  384. all that i have commanded

  385. so obedience

  386. and holiness

  387. is built into

  388. our life as disciples

  389. god wants the world

  390. to know

  391. jesus

  392. and to believe

  393. in jesus

  394. and to obey

  395. jesus

  396. and so we have to

  397. encourage one another

  398. to obey

  399. jesus

  400. and we have to show

  401. others

  402. in our obedience

  403. in our love

  404. the goodness

  405. and the beauty

  406. of our god

  407. we are

  408. in a very real way

  409. i think

  410. the lens

  411. through which the gospel

  412. is going to be read

  413. people are going to look

  414. at jesus

  415. through the lens

  416. of our character

  417. our lives

  418. and that's something

  419. we need to think about

  420. when it comes to

  421. our holiness

  422. as a church

  423. and as christians

  424. finally

  425. to be holy

  426. having fixed our hope

  427. on jesus

  428. and fixed our identity

  429. on jesus

  430. to be holy

  431. we need to fix our heart

  432. on jesus

  433. so here's a question

  434. whenever we're thinking

  435. about holiness

  436. it's really important

  437. to think

  438. how am i going to avoid

  439. that stereotype

  440. of holiness

  441. that really puts people off

  442. that comes across

  443. as really critical

  444. and judgmental

  445. where it's all about

  446. a long list of do's

  447. and don'ts

  448. or where it just seems

  449. like dull duty

  450. how can we

  451. actually love

  452. the idea of holiness

  453. how can we see

  454. that it's good news

  455. for us

  456. how can we make it

  457. seem beautiful

  458. to others

  459. it's a really

  460. important question

  461. and the answer

  462. is only

  463. by the power

  464. of the gospel

  465. it's only because

  466. jesus has come

  467. to bring this

  468. wonderful redemption

  469. and it's only

  470. as we fix

  471. our hearts

  472. on what jesus

  473. has done for us

  474. and continues

  475. to do for us

  476. that will be

  477. empowered

  478. and motivated

  479. towards holiness

  480. and obedience

  481. so let's look

  482. at verse 18

  483. first of all

  484. to notice something

  485. that we are redeemed

  486. from

  487. what does jesus

  488. redeem us from

  489. for you know

  490. it was not

  491. with perishable

  492. things such as

  493. silver or gold

  494. that you were

  495. redeemed

  496. from the empty

  497. way of life

  498. handed down to you

  499. from your ancestors

  500. you've been

  501. redeemed

  502. from an empty

  503. way of life

  504. so that's either

  505. so thinking about

  506. this background

  507. here

  508. that's either

  509. a group of christians

  510. who've been saved

  511. out of a roman

  512. background

  513. and they've been

  514. saved from the

  515. false worship

  516. of idols

  517. and empty

  518. sacrifices

  519. or

  520. there's folks

  521. from a jewish

  522. background

  523. and they've been

  524. saved from

  525. a religion

  526. based entirely

  527. on law

  528. do this

  529. do that

  530. and if you do

  531. well enough

  532. maybe god

  533. will be pleased

  534. and what peter

  535. says is he cuts

  536. through

  537. either of those

  538. and says that

  539. they're both

  540. empty

  541. any attempt

  542. to be holy

  543. and good enough

  544. by ourselves

  545. for a holy god

  546. will never

  547. be

  548. enough

  549. and so he's

  550. rescuing us here

  551. from a temptation

  552. so we hear

  553. we need

  554. we need to be

  555. more holy

  556. he's saving us

  557. simply from saying

  558. okay what i need

  559. to do is i need

  560. to roll my sleeves

  561. up i need more

  562. willpower

  563. i need more

  564. resolution

  565. that the reality

  566. is what we need

  567. to be holy

  568. is we need

  569. spiritual resurrection

  570. nothing short

  571. of that will empower

  572. or lead

  573. to holiness

  574. so we're redeemed

  575. from an empty

  576. way of life

  577. and we are

  578. redeemed

  579. by something

  580. first of all

  581. i want us to

  582. notice that we're

  583. redeemed

  584. by or in line

  585. with the eternal

  586. plan of god

  587. look at verse 20

  588. having spoken

  589. having spoken

  590. about jesus

  591. as the lamb

  592. without blemish

  593. or defect

  594. we're told he

  595. was chosen

  596. before the

  597. creation of

  598. the world

  599. but was revealed

  600. in these last

  601. times for your

  602. sake

  603. so just to

  604. remind us

  605. that in the

  606. eternal plan

  607. the eternal

  608. will of god

  609. jesus

  610. jesus

  611. the sinless

  612. son of god

  613. was chosen

  614. to be a

  615. savior

  616. for unholy

  617. unfaithful

  618. unwilling

  619. sinners

  620. like us

  621. and then

  622. in the fullness

  623. of god's time

  624. he was revealed

  625. in the last

  626. times

  627. he was revealed

  628. in verse 21

  629. as the savior

  630. to believe in

  631. that because

  632. he has died

  633. and he has been

  634. raised again

  635. and god has glorified

  636. him

  637. and we believe

  638. in him

  639. and our faith

  640. and our hope

  641. are in god

  642. so we're redeemed

  643. by or according

  644. to god's eternal

  645. plan of salvation

  646. that's a wonderful

  647. privilege

  648. and we've been

  649. redeemed

  650. verse 19

  651. with the precious

  652. blood

  653. of christ

  654. in the evenings

  655. we've been thinking

  656. about the book

  657. of exodus

  658. and we get to the

  659. passover

  660. we'll be there

  661. in a couple of

  662. weeks

  663. that's a powerful

  664. picture

  665. so so god

  666. announces

  667. that judgment

  668. is going to

  669. come

  670. upon

  671. egypt

  672. but there is

  673. a way

  674. for israel

  675. to be spared

  676. the judgment

  677. and that's

  678. through this

  679. passover lamb

  680. this pure

  681. lamb that is

  682. to be looked

  683. after

  684. and then it is

  685. to be killed

  686. and the blood

  687. is to be sprinkled

  688. so that

  689. on the night

  690. when the judgment

  691. of god

  692. passes

  693. through

  694. egypt

  695. and falls

  696. on egypt

  697. it will pass

  698. over

  699. the houses

  700. of israel

  701. why

  702. not because

  703. they were

  704. sinless

  705. and perfect

  706. but because

  707. the judgment

  708. has fallen

  709. on the

  710. passover

  711. lamb

  712. the lamb

  713. has died

  714. so they

  715. might be

  716. redeemed

  717. the lamb

  718. has been

  719. the sacrifice

  720. who has

  721. taken sin

  722. who has

  723. turned away

  724. the anger

  725. of god

  726. so that

  727. god's people

  728. might go free

  729. that's a

  730. wonderful

  731. picture

  732. of what

  733. jesus does

  734. for us

  735. on the

  736. cross

  737. jesus

  738. takes

  739. the judgment

  740. of god

  741. so we

  742. might be

  743. forgiven

  744. and set

  745. free

  746. and set

  747. free

  748. to become

  749. that kingdom

  750. of priests

  751. to become

  752. that holy

  753. nation

  754. to become

  755. that people

  756. who don't

  757. live for

  758. ourselves

  759. rather we

  760. live for

  761. the glory

  762. of god

  763. the one

  764. who loved

  765. us and

  766. gave his

  767. son

  768. for us

  769. and so it

  770. becomes clear

  771. then that

  772. to be

  773. holy we

  774. must first

  775. be born

  776. again

  777. we need

  778. the saving

  779. work of god

  780. through jesus

  781. in our hearts

  782. and lives

  783. so we need

  784. to come

  785. to jesus

  786. and then to

  787. live these

  788. holy lives we

  789. must fix our

  790. hearts

  791. on jesus

  792. again to

  793. preach the

  794. gospel

  795. into our

  796. hearts

  797. every day

  798. so that we

  799. be pursuing

  800. holiness

  801. and obedience

  802. not as a

  803. sense of

  804. dull duty

  805. not thinking

  806. we need to

  807. work hard

  808. enough to

  809. earn it

  810. but because

  811. we are

  812. children of

  813. grace

  814. and because

  815. of a profound

  816. sense of

  817. gratitude

  818. for what god

  819. has done

  820. in sending

  821. jesus to be

  822. our savior

  823. so as we

  824. draw this

  825. to conclusion

  826. let's ask

  827. ourselves

  828. the question

  829. am i

  830. ready

  831. to live

  832. as an

  833. exile

  834. am i

  835. ready

  836. to choose

  837. the way

  838. of holiness

  839. so i was

  840. thinking about

  841. this week

  842. you know

  843. thinking about

  844. those highlanders

  845. setting sail

  846. in their

  847. boats

  848. you know

  849. having

  850. bidden a

  851. tearful farewell

  852. to those few

  853. who remain

  854. behind

  855. and seeing

  856. the land

  857. pass on

  858. the horizon

  859. they would

  860. all have

  861. been faced

  862. with a

  863. choice

  864. knowing

  865. you're

  866. heading

  867. to the

  868. new

  869. world

  870. you've

  871. got a

  872. choice

  873. you can

  874. move on

  875. you can

  876. forget the

  877. old ways

  878. maybe the

  879. new ways

  880. are better

  881. or

  882. that's what

  883. so many

  884. of them

  885. did

  886. they can

  887. constantly

  888. hear the

  889. call of

  890. home

  891. and they'll

  892. protect

  893. their

  894. culture

  895. and they'll

  896. treasure their

  897. sense of

  898. identity

  899. even as

  900. they live

  901. as exiles

  902. you and i

  903. are called

  904. to our own

  905. choice

  906. today and

  907. every day

  908. first of all

  909. to hear the

  910. call of the

  911. gospel

  912. to hear the

  913. voice of

  914. jesus

  915. calling us

  916. away

  917. calling us

  918. out of

  919. empty ways

  920. calling us

  921. out of

  922. those evil

  923. desires

  924. so that we

  925. would receive

  926. his redemption

  927. would receive

  928. his rescue

  929. from our

  930. slavery from

  931. sin

  932. that we be

  933. changed from

  934. the inside

  935. out

  936. so that we

  937. would live

  938. as a child

  939. of god

  940. and a citizen

  941. of heaven

  942. and then

  943. we're called

  944. then to

  945. live out

  946. the culture

  947. of the

  948. gospel

  949. to take

  950. seriously

  951. our call

  952. to be

  953. obedient

  954. children

  955. not just

  956. in some

  957. of life

  958. but in all

  959. of life

  960. not just

  961. when it's

  962. easy

  963. but when

  964. it's

  965. hard

  966. following

  967. jesus

  968. pattern

  969. of love

  970. walking

  971. in the

  972. footsteps

  973. of jesus

  974. our elder

  975. brother

  976. guided

  977. by god's

  978. word

  979. to

  980. recognize

  981. how

  982. to

  983. obey

  984. so let's

  985. fix

  986. our eyes

  987. on jesus

  988. let him

  989. be

  990. our hope

  991. let him

  992. be the

  993. one our

  994. life is

  995. centered

  996. on

  997. let our

  998. hearts

  999. be fixed

  1000. on him

  1001. so that

  1002. we

  1003. would

  1004. truly

  1005. live

  1006. as

  1007. exiles

  1008. of

  1009. heaven

  1010. let's

  1011. pray

  1012. together

  1013. once

  1014. again

  1015. father

  1016. god

  1017. we thank

  1018. you for

  1019. this wonderful

  1020. privilege that

  1021. by faith

  1022. in jesus

  1023. we can

  1024. live

  1025. we can live

  1026. as obedient

  1027. children

  1028. that we can

  1029. dare to call

  1030. you father

  1031. lord thank you for

  1032. reminding us that your

1033. call to save us also comes with a call to live holy and obedient lives

1034. lord we recognize how often we are inconsistent we recognize how easy we can find it to to ignore those parts of your word that challenge us or make us feel uncomfortable

1035. lord we pray that you would fix our eyes on jesus that he would be our savior he would be our pattern that we be reading your word that the spirit would be guiding us to know what obedience looks like day by day

1036. lord that we would want to honor and fear you as our father that we want to display your glory and your goodness in our lives that we want our church to be a place marked by genuine holiness

1037. not by a legalistic set of rules and regulations or a sense of dull duty but a sense of living joy because we have a living hope that our holiness would be a living one following the way of jesus and his way of love

1038. and we pray in jesus name that you would help us so that we might glorify you

  1039. amen
