  1. Father, we give you thanks and praise that you are good, that you are only good, that

  2. you have ever been good and will always be good.

  3. And we give you thanks and praise that you are an ever-giving God, a generous God that

  4. we can never outgive you, that you are never in our debt.

  5. And we thank and praise you, Father, for that all of the good in the world and whatever

  6. good there is within us has ultimately come as a gift from you.

  7. And we acknowledge before you, Father, that we often doubt your goodness and are presumptuous

  8. about your generosity towards us.

  9. We ask, Father, that you would do a gentle but wonderful work in our hearts this morning

  10. to bring home to us the truth of who you are and the truth of what you have done in your

  11. Son.

  12. And as we are gripped by this, help us to understand better the truth, the true truth about ourselves,

  13. that we might be filled with life and freedom and live to praise you.

  14. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  15. Amen.

  16. Please be seated.

  17. So those of you who have known me for a while know that I have a, well, I have sort of a

  18. bit of a right-handedness when it comes to the Bible and when it comes to, I guess, Christian

  19. teaching.

  20. And I don't always, like in some ways I wish that I could change it.

  21. It's just my right, so I had trouble trying to figure out how to start this sermon today

  22. because my right-handedness is to be a Christian apologist.

  23. That's my right-handedness, to try to hear and understand the objections to the Christian faith and to address them.

  24. And so as an apologist, and that sort of goes at war with an evangelist.

  25. An evangelist is a person, or more of a, I guess, a more pastor type, in a sense,

  26. would also be, they want to try to woo people.

  27. They want to woo the lost sheep to come home.

  28. They want to woo the sheep to eat and to be fed.

  29. That type of nurturing aspect of a pastor, a shepherd, a nurturing aspect of an evangelist.

  30. And they war within me at some different times.

  31. So the way my mind normally works when it comes to pick a sermon thing is I look at a text like today.

  32. We're going to look at James 1, 12 to 25.

  33. And the first thing that goes through my mind is, oh, that's very interesting.

  34. There are many people who think that God,

  35. one of the reasons that many people in our culture have rejected the idea of God

  36. is because they believe that God promotes violence.

  37. In fact, it would be a commonplace to many people.

  38. Oh, yeah, the God in the Bible tells people to kill people.

  39. Like, if I was to go and say that, you know, for actually being able to have, like, in a bar,

  40. and just say, oh, you know, by the way, I was just reading today about how the God of the Bible

  41. tells people to kill people.

  42. Like, people just nod.

  43. Yeah, yeah.

  44. Like, it's just like talking about COVID-19 or the weather.

  45. Like, everybody knows that.

  46. And that's one of the reasons people don't like God.

  47. And that's the normal way my mind would work when I look at a text like this

  48. because actually the text says something about that belief about people.

  49. On the other hand, if I was more of an evangelist, more of a pastor,

  50. I would do something to try to woo you, to entice you into it

  51. because maybe those of you who are here are particularly worried about that particular question.

  52. But I could woo you and say something like there was a non-Christian,

  53. this is about 20, 25 years ago,

  54. there was a non-Christian who studied as part of his PhD

  55. all of the self-help and all of the self-improvement literature for the previous 100 years.

  56. And he tried to synthesize to see if there was some common teaching

  57. for the self-help improvement literature for the previous 100 years.

  58. And he came up with seven things which seemed to be common

  59. to all of the self-help literature that had been written in the previous 100 years.

  60. And interestingly enough, once again, remember this is a person who's not a Christian.

  61. And interestingly enough, one of the things that he came up,

  62. one of the seven things that was common of all self-help literature

  63. over the previous 100 years was something that James wrote in the year 40

  64. because it's actually here in the text.

  65. And so anyway, I've done both.

  66. I just share you.

  67. You can pray for me because sometimes my apologist side of me

  68. just automatically thinks of questions and objections.

  69. And I should also think more of that which woos.

  70. So we'll look at both.

  71. And so if you have your Bibles, look at James 1, verses 12 to 25,

    James 1:12–25

  72. which is where we are, second of our sermons in the book of James,

  73. James 1, verses 12 to 25.

    James 1:12–25

  74. And it begins like this.

  75. And actually, those of you who remember my sermon from last week,

  76. heard and remember it, will know that last week we went right up to verse 12,

  77. and yet I'm reading verse 12 again.

  78. And there's a literary reason for this.

  79. Sorry here.

  80. Grammar geek moment.

  81. Just those of the rest of you, try not to fall asleep.

  82. This is a text that at a literary level is sometimes can be referred to as a Janus text.

  83. In other words, if you look at it from a literary point of view,

  84. it sort of summarizes verses 2 to 12,

  85. and it sort of summarizes the stuff that went on before or sort of clarifies it.

  86. But it's a Janus text because it also actually introduces what's going to happen next.

  87. So it's one of those texts that James wrote it so it looks two ways at the same time,

  88. helps to clarify what just went on,

  89. and actually helps to introduce what comes next in a very important, powerful way.

  90. So we're going to read verse 12, and it goes like this.

  91. Blessed is the man or the woman who remains steadfast under trial,

  92. for when he or she has stood the test,

  93. he or she, he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.

  94. Now, we didn't talk about this text very much last week,

  95. but it actually has something which is several things.

  96. So first of all, I mean, I'll just be honest,

  97. I have no particular interest in wearing a crown.

  98. So if this text was to try to grab me, it doesn't grab me at all.

  99. Like, I mean, the only time I wear something like a crown

  100. is when I go to a kid's birthday party and they have crowns.

  101. And I, of course, put on the crown and I wear it as long as the kids wear it,

  102. and it's all good fun.

  103. But beyond that, it doesn't do anything whatsoever to motivate me.

  104. Maybe for some of you who love the crown and love the monarchy,

  105. you know, the idea that maybe you could go to Buckingham Palace and have tea with the queen,

  106. and at the end of it, she'd say,

  107. by the way, would you like to wear my crown?

  108. And you'd think you'd died and gone to heaven.

  109. So then maybe that's a good analogy for some of you.

  110. However, actually, the type of crown which is being mentioned here isn't that type of crown,

  111. so you'd be disappointed.

  112. In the ancient world, when you won the marathon race or you won the athletic event,

  113. you were given a crown to show that you'd won.

  114. And that's the type of crown which is referred to here.

  115. So you've been, you know, God in his goodness and love

  116. sends you different types of trials and tests.

  117. That's part of the normal Christian life.

  118. And at the end of all things, this is how it summarized the last thing.

  119. The way you understand it is if you're in Christ,

  120. the end of your walk with Christ is to, in a sense, be crowned by God,

  121. congratulated for having run the race well.

  122. But it's even more important than that.

  123. It's actually an image that at the end,

  124. you are engulfed in a greater life than you have ever known right now.

  125. It's a very, very powerful image.

  126. And when you understand that the image is sort of implying something that you see throughout all of the Bible,

  127. that if you take, I mean, it's sort of, on one hand,

  128. if you have, if there is the world's greatest athlete

  129. and they die in a helicopter accident or a car accident,

  130. but they're in Christ,

  131. on the other side of death, their death,

  132. which means the end and the breaking of the end of their body,

  133. they'd actually, if they're in Christ,

  134. they'd get swallowed with a greater life than they ever knew

  135. or experienced on this side of the grave.

  136. But it's also really hopeful because those of us who have loved ones

  137. who are now very, very, very frail, very, very broken,

  138. their body is becoming next to nothing,

  139. and then they die,

  140. if they're in Christ,

  141. what happens in the moment of their death

  142. is that they are engulfed,

  143. they are swallowed,

  144. they are clothed in life.

  145. And that's the telos,

  146. that's the end that God has for those of us who are in him.

  147. And as I like to say over the last little while,

  148. the end of the story makes the story completely and utterly different.

  149. I mean, this is one of the problems that we have actually right now in Canada

  150. because, as you know, all of the smart people,

  151. many of the, not all of the smart people,

  152. many of the smart people want to have doctors be able to kill more people.

  153. That's actually, it's going on right now in the Senate and everything like that.

  154. And if you read newspapers,

  155. there's many, many arguments to give doctors more freedom

  156. and to encourage more doctors to actually be able to do this,

  157. to be able to kill people.

  158. But of course, it actually,

  159. it's so fascinating that this is going on in our culture

  160. at the same time that we're having COVID-19

  161. because there's a lot of fear

  162. right now in our culture.

  163. I think there's lots of fear.

  164. And it's interesting because we live in a culture that wants to kill.

  165. I know I'm being very blunt,

  166. but that's what the doctor does.

  167. He kills or she kills.

  168. And we want to have that doctor have more power to kill

  169. and to be able to kill more people

  170. and to be able to qualify more people

  171. and have less bureaucracy to be able to kill people.

  172. And that's what we want.

  173. And at the same time,

  174. we live in a culture which is in denial about death.

  175. And COVID-19 is partially revealing

  176. that we live in a culture that's terrified of death.

  177. And at the same time that we desire death,

  178. are in denial of death,

  179. are terrified of death,

  180. we are also completely and utterly

  181. able to see that about our culture.

  182. And that's, I think,

  183. a little bit why there's both

  184. the acquiescence

  185. to very, very

  186. major government interventions

  187. in freedoms and all in Canada

  188. and also a lot of the hysteria.

  189. I'm not a COVID-19 denier

  190. or anything like that.

  191. I'm not that.

  192. But

  193. it is something about our culture

  194. that's going on

  195. right now

  196. and that our culture is blind to it.

  197. And it's hard for us to know how to pray into it.

  198. And that's a bit of an aside

  199. and maybe I shouldn't have gone into that.

  200. Maybe I will.

  201. Who knows?

  202. Maybe I'll get some angry letters

  203. or emails or whatever.

  204. I don't know.

  205. But what we need to see here

  206. is that the telos,

  207. the end,

  208. the goal

  209. that God has for every person who,

  210. he desires that every person

  211. would come to be in Christ.

  212. And for those of us in Christ,

  213. the end

  214. is to be swallowed up by life.

  215. And that means it's a,

  216. it's,

  217. it's unlike the athletic crown,

  218. which is a zero-sum game.

  219. If all of us enter the marathon,

  220. only one of us would be the best person for Messiah.

  221. You know,

  222. maybe in our case,

  223. I don't know,

  224. maybe some of you are unbelievably fit.

  225. You know,

  226. the best finishing time would be four hours

  227. or something like that.

  228. If you're maybe in some places in Kenya,

  229. the best finishing time would be two hours and ten minutes.

  230. But,

  231. but only one of us can be the first to cross the line.

  232. But this is not a zero-sum game.

  233. The more who are in Christ,

  234. the more everyone receives this telos,

  235. this end of life.

  236. And,

  237. then the Bible actually says,

  238. talks a little bit about death next.

  239. Like,

  240. it doesn't just talk about life,

  241. as if it just talks about life,

  242. life,

  243. life,

  244. life,

  245. life,

  246. life,

  247. and,

  248. and,

  249. and just doesn't look at what's going on in our culture,

  250. what goes on in our own life,

  251. the fact that many,

  252. that all of us will die,

  253. and,

  254. it's,

  255. well,

  256. the Bible actually now talks about death.

  257. It goes from life to death.

  258. And if you look at it,

  259. it's verses 13 to 15.

  260. It goes like this.

  261. Let no one say when he is tempted,

  262. I am being tempted by God.

  263. For God cannot be tempted with evil,

  264. and he himself tempts no one.

  265. But each person is tempted

  266. when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

  267. Verse 15,

  268. then desire,

  269. when it has conceived,

  270. gives birth to sin,

  271. and sin,

  272. when it is fully grown,

  273. brings forth death.

  274. So,

  275. one of the things that the Bible is doing here,

  276. which is very shocking,

  277. is it's saying that death isn't a merely biological category.

  278. Like,

  279. actually,

  280. if you think about it,

  281. one of the things which is going on in our culture as well,

  282. is that there's a crisis of meaning.

  283. Because,

  284. basically,

  285. if we've grown up in a culture

  286. that basically teaches us that God doesn't exist,

  287. or if he,

  288. then it really,

  289. you're caught with it.

  290. Was it Stephen Crane,

  291. who over a hundred years ago

  292. made some comment about,

  293. we say to the universe

  294. how we're feeling,

  295. and basically,

  296. of course,

  297. the universe doesn't really care.

  298. The universe is completely and utterly impersonal.

  299. It's just stuff.

  300. It's just matter.

  301. It's just energy.

  302. And if we live in a universe

  303. which is just stuff,

  304. it's just matter and energy and physical laws,

  305. and that's all there is.

  306. And life is merely a biological curiosity,

  307. and death is merely a biological curiosity,

  308. and nature cares no more

  309. whether things come to life

  310. or whether things die.

  311. They're all just natural processes,

  312. biological processes,

  313. that just happen.

  314. And yet,

  315. at the same time,

  316. we know that there must be meaning.

  317. And the Bible says that,

  318. in fact,

  319. there is meaning,

  320. and that death isn't just a biological thing.

  321. There's actually something

  322. which brings death about

  323. and is intimately connected with death.

  324. And what is intimately connected with death

  325. is the desire for us to be like God,

  326. the desire that we have to sin.

  327. And what the Bible is saying here

  328. is very,

  329. very powerful,

  330. is that nobody can ever say,

  331. remember one of my early apologetic things,

  332. that many people,

  333. they look at the world,

  334. and they see that suicide bombers,

  335. the suicide bombers believe that,

  336. in a sense,

  337. God commands people to kill,

  338. and that they'll be rewarded for killing.

  339. And they don't make distinctions.

  340. Many people in our culture

  341. between,

  342. you know,

  343. that holy book

  344. and the Christian holy book

  345. or other types.

  346. It's just a general,

  347. all religious people are like that.

  348. But we actually see that

  349. in this particular book,

  350. the Bible,

  351. that in fact,

  352. the Bible actually says

  353. that God is only good,

  354. and he never puts into your mind

  355. to do something evil.

  356. Like,

  357. he never does that.

  358. We can never say,

  359. if somebody comes to you

  360. or your accounts,

  361. and I think God is telling me

  362. to kill somebody,

  363. you can say,

  364. well,

  365. no,

  366. God's not telling you to kill them.

  367. I mean,

  368. he's just not.

  369. Not the true God.

  370. I mean,

  371. a demon might be doing that,

  372. but it's more likely

  373. just something that's coming

  374. from within you.

  375. So that the world that we live in

  376. is a world where there is real evil,

  377. but the source of real evil

  378. actually comes,

  379. and here's where,

  380. you see,

  381. at a first reading this text,

  382. our Buddhist friends

  383. would actually say,

  384. my,

  385. this sounds like a very Buddhist

  386. type of text,

  387. but it's not a Buddhist text.

  388. It doesn't say that the problem

  389. is desire.

  390. In fact,

  391. the opposite of it,

  392. I mean,

  393. the reason that in verse 12,

  394. the Bible tells us

  395. that the God's telos,

  396. his end for you,

  397. is more life,

  398. that that's your destiny

  399. in Christ,

  400. is to be engulfed

  401. with more life.

  402. That's your destiny.

  403. He tells,

  404. the Bible tells us that,

  405. so we'll desire it.

  406. That's,

  407. he tells it,

  408. so we'll desire it.

  409. So the Bible doesn't say

  410. that the problem is desire.

  411. The problem comes

  412. from desires within us,

  413. but it isn't a desire per se.

  414. You know,

  415. I was just thinking about it.

  416. I bought a coffee

  417. between the services.

  418. It's water in here right now

  419. in case I need to have

  420. a bit of a sip.

  421. But I was just thinking

  422. on the way

  423. between getting the coffee

  424. and coming back,

  425. what a great invention

  426. money is.

  427. Like,

  428. money is a great,

  429. great,

  430. great,

  431. great,

  432. brilliant invention.

  433. I know there's at least

  434. one economist

  435. in the congregation.

  436. Talk to the economist

  437. about how great

  438. an invention money is.

  439. If we didn't have money,

  440. I don't know,

  441. I'd have to bring like,

  442. I don't know,

  443. like a live rabbit

  444. or something

  445. and I'd give them

  446. the live rabbit

  447. that they could kill

  448. later on

  449. and they'd give me

  450. a cup of coffee

  451. and,

  452. you know,

  453. one of you come up

  454. with a brilliant device

  455. that you can sell

  456. and you sell it online

  457. through your own webpage

  458. and somebody in Vancouver

  459. wants it.

  460. I mean,

  461. they just wire you money

  462. and you wire them

  463. and you send them the thing.

  464. They don't have to send you,

  465. you don't have to say,

  466. well,

  467. I'll give you this widget

  468. if you give me,

  469. I don't know,

  470. like a pound of flour,

  471. three pounds of butter

  472. and a bottle of wine.

  473. Like,

  474. no,

  475. you know,

  476. they just send you money

  477. and you can buy that stuff.

  478. It's a great invention

  479. and so the problem

  480. isn't money.

  481. But we all know

  482. that money

  483. and the misuse of money

  484. and the allure of money

  485. causes all sorts

  486. of problems

  487. and heartache.

  488. People who study

  489. marital counseling

  490. say that one of the issues

  491. that brings,

  492. that's connected

  493. to a lot of marital problems

  494. is in fact

  495. arguments over money.

  496. One of the things

  497. that you'll get surprised

  498. at in marriage

  499. is your maybe

  500. right-handedness

  501. is to save

  502. and another person's

  503. right-handedness

  504. is if you have the paycheck,

  505. you spend the whole paycheck.

  506. Actually,

  507. if you get a paycheck,

  508. you spend all the whole paycheck

  509. and maybe 5% more

  510. because that's the wonderful thing

  511. about credit cards,

  512. isn't it?

  513. I mean,

  514. you just pay it back

  515. in the next credit card

  516. and all of a sudden

  517. you think you love this person.

  518. You go,

  519. what?

  520. You're going to do that

  521. with the money?

  522. And they say,

  523. what?

  524. You're going to do that

  525. with the money?

  526. Come on,

  527. live a bit.

  528. Don't be so tight.

  529. Come on,

  530. don't be so,

  531. you know,

  532. just spend all your money

  533. on stuff.

  534. Like,

  535. what about rainy days?

  536. And then you start

  537. to have conflicts

  538. and both of you

  539. just think it's natural.

  540. And that's separate

  541. from the fact

  542. that people can be

  543. consumed with money,

  544. that have money rule them,

  545. that they make their basement,

  546. their decisions about things

  547. based on money.

  548. And it's also connected

  549. to the fact

  550. that you get lots of money

  551. and you don't say to yourself,

  552. you know,

  553. I have lots of money

  554. and, you know,

  555. gosh,

  556. there's this,

  557. you know,

  558. young couple in the church

  559. and, you know,

  560. maybe I should just bless them

  561. by giving them

  562. a couple of dollars

  563. or, you know,

  564. there's this opportunity,

  565. you know,

  566. we're supporting

  567. a missionary in Angola,

  568. we're supporting

  569. a missionary here,

  570. we're supporting

  571. a missionary there,

  572. you know,

  573. they need to eat

  574. and I should be

  575. generous towards them

  576. and there's the needs

  577. of the church,

  578. I should be generous.

  579. But, gosh,

  580. you know,

  581. there's an old joke,

  582. maybe some of you

  583. have heard it,

  584. there's an old joke,

  585. there's a young man

  586. who was starting up

  587. a business

  588. and he went to his mom

  589. about what he should do

  590. and his mom said,

  591. you know,

  592. listen,

  593. the Bible says

  594. that if you bless,

  595. you know,

  596. if you're faithful,

  597. God will,

  598. you know,

  599. bless you

  600. and all that type of stuff

  601. so I suggest

  602. that what you should do

  603. is you should make

  604. a commitment before God

  605. that you tithe,

  606. you know,

  607. whatever money comes in.

  608. So, you know,

  609. he has his business,

  610. the first week he makes,

  611. first couple months

  612. he makes $500 a week

  613. and at the end of every week

  614. he writes a check to $50

  615. and, you know,

  616. puts it in the offering plate

  617. and then, you know,

  618. before you know it

  619. he's making $1,000 a week,

  620. $1,500 a week,

  621. $2,000 a week

  622. and every time

  623. he writes a tithe

  624. but all of a sudden

  625. his business takes off,

  626. like really takes off,

  627. he's making $10,000 a week

  628. and he can't write

  629. $1,000 check

  630. to the church,

  631. like he just can't,

  632. like that's a lot of money

  633. and so he's wondering

  634. what to do about it

  635. and he says,

  636. and the mom says,

  637. I don't know,

  638. I think you should just

  639. keep tithing

  640. but I don't know,

  641. talk to the pastor,

  642. he knows all about

  643. this type of stuff,

  644. this isn't me

  645. so the young guy

  646. goes to the pastor

  647. and the pastor

  648. listens to the problem

  649. and he says,

  650. yeah,

  651. I know exactly what to do,

  652. I can pray about it

  653. and it'll be alright with God,

  654. I know exactly

  655. how to pray

  656. into this situation

  657. and you'll be really happy

  658. at the end of it

  659. and so the young man says,

  660. oh I'm so thankful,

  661. pastor,

  662. let's do that

  663. and so the young,

  664. the guy says,

  665. can I hold your hands?

  666. He says,

  667. yeah,

  668. you can hold my hands,

  669. we hold hands,

  670. he prays

  671. and God says,

  672. dear Lord,

  673. please reduce this man's income

  674. to $500 a week again

  675. so that he can tithe

  676. and that's not what the young,

  677. that's not what the young man

  678. wanted at all,

  679. he wanted a bit of a pass

  680. but the point of it all

  681. is this,

  682. that in fact,

  683. it's very,

  684. very hard,

  685. money isn't a bad thing,

  686. money's a brilliant invention,

  687. it's a good thing

  688. and for those of you

  689. who are just starting out

  690. and you need more money

  691. and the other,

  692. you can work hard,

  693. be creative,

  694. come up with businesses,

  695. work for promotions,

  696. that's all good things per se

  697. but we all know

  698. that the problem comes

  699. for desires

  700. that start to bend that,

  701. that we start to desire

  702. things too much,

  703. we desire money

  704. more than we desire

  705. maybe our kids

  706. or our wife

  707. or we desire,

  708. you know,

  709. power too much

  710. or whatever it is,

  711. there's nothing wrong

  712. with power per se

  713. or authority per se

  714. but that there's something

  715. and the Bible is saying

  716. that whatever evil there is

  717. is going on in the world,

  718. none of it comes from God,

  719. it comes from within us

  720. and what happens

  721. is that it comes from within us

  722. and it's as if there's

  723. a little voice,

  724. good grief here,

  725. I just got out of the blue,

  726. distant relative

  727. from Australia

  728. left me $200,000

  729. tax free

  730. and while some of us

  731. are not even tempted anymore,

  732. we just spend it all

  733. on ourselves,

  734. not thinking that maybe

  735. part of the reason

  736. that that blessing

  737. has come

  738. is to be actually generous

  739. and some of us

  740. might struggle with it,

  741. others don't even struggle

  742. with it

  743. because we're no longer

  744. even tempted,

  745. we just give in

  746. to having money control us,

  747. it can be the same

  748. with the beauty of a man

  749. or the beauty of a woman,

  750. it can be with all sorts

  751. of things,

  752. you just go on and on and on

  753. is that this,

  754. first there's the desire,

  755. we're tempted,

  756. some people don't have

  757. the tempted anymore

  758. because we just give in,

  759. give in,

  760. give in,

  761. give in,

  762. give in,

  763. and it's maybe like

  764. as I said,

  765. maybe with the marriage

  766. and a couple,

  767. they don't realize

  768. that one of the people

  769. is actually really,

  770. really consumed with money,

  771. they don't realize

  772. that because they're just,

  773. you know,

  774. their parents were

  775. consumed with money,

  776. their program was

  777. consumed with money,

  778. their friends were

  779. consumed with money

  780. and they marry a woman

  781. and all of a sudden

  782. a woman's not

  783. consumed with money

  784. and they go,

  785. whoa,

  786. woman,

  787. like maybe there's

  788. a different way

  789. I should handle money,

  790. but we have a desire

  791. and it leads to temptation

  792. and we give in

  793. to the temptation,

  794. giving in

  795. to the temptation,

  796. refusing to be generous,

  797. making an idol of money,

  798. lusting after a woman,

  799. you know,

  800. acting out of that lust

  801. in some particular way,

  802. being filled with anger

  803. at something which has

  804. happened a slight

  805. and so we have the desire,

  806. we give in to it

  807. and it's sin

  808. and sin always leads to death.

  809. In a sense,

  810. death is a sign

  811. that we are under

  812. God's judgment,

  813. which is one of the reasons

  814. why we feel

  815. no matter how much

  816. biologists tell us

  817. it's a natural process,

  818. we all know that

  819. it's not a natural process.

  820. There's something wrong

  821. and offensive

  822. and broken about it.

  823. We know the world

  824. should be mended

  825. in a different way

  826. and we sense

  827. there's something wrong

  828. about it

  829. and the Bible is saying

  830. there is something wrong

  831. about it.

  832. It is a sign

  833. of the judgment of God.

  834. It is a sign

  835. of that aspect

  836. that comes from within us

  837. that wants to be like God,

  838. which means

  839. that we have to be

  840. over others,

  841. that we have to be

  842. the center,

  843. that we have to have it

  844. be our way

  845. or the highway

  846. and on and on.

  847. So some of you

  848. might say,

  849. George,

  850. thank you for that.

  851. That's a very depressing

  852. whole thing.

  853. We're all going to die.

  854. It's a sign

  855. of the judgment of God.

  856. You know,

  857. thank you for that.

  858. That's very,

  859. very helpful.

  860. The news sucks.

  861. Desire taints

  862. all human beings.

  863. But the Bible

  864. doesn't just stop

  865. with that

  866. because some of us

  867. might say,

  868. George,

  869. there's lots of good

  870. in the world

  871. and in fact,

  872. I actually sort of

  873. talked about it

  874. and I say money

  875. is a brilliant

  876. invention.

  877. It's a brilliant

  878. invention

  879. and it's a good.

  880. It makes many things

  881. in life far more easy.

  882. It allows

  883. there to be

  884. business

  885. and enterprise

  886. and people

  887. to work really hard

  888. and to be reimbursed.

  889. It's a brilliant thing

  890. and in fact,

  891. you see,

  892. the Bible

  893. doesn't just talk

  894. about evil

  895. and death.

  896. It talks about life.

  897. Remember,

  898. that's how it began.

  899. Look what happens

  900. right after

  901. verses 13 to 15.

  902. It goes like this,

  903. verses 16 to 18.

  904. Do not be deceived,

  905. my beloved brothers

  906. and sisters.

  907. Every good gift

  908. and every perfect gift

  909. is from above,

  910. coming down

  911. from the Father

  912. of lights

  913. with whom

  914. there is no variation

  915. or shadow

  916. due to change.

  917. Of his own will,

  918. he brought us forth

  919. by the word of truth

  920. that we should be

  921. a kind of first fruits

  922. of his creatures.

  923. So the Bible actually

  924. says that there is good.

  925. There's an unending

  926. amount of good

  927. in the created world

  928. and there's good

  929. within every one of us.

  930. But that good

  931. is always a gift.

  932. It's a gift

  933. that comes from God.

  934. And in a sense,

  935. me,

  936. when,

  937. if people see goodness

  938. in me

  939. or see goodness in you,

  940. what they're really seeing

  941. is something that God

  942. has done in me

  943. and through me

  944. or it's a reflection

  945. of God's goodness

  946. which you're able to see.

  947. But in fact,

  948. there is good in the world.

  949. It isn't the case

  950. that the world

  951. is all evil

  952. or that the world

  953. is all good.

  954. There is real evil

  955. in the world

  956. and it comes from human beings.

  957. It comes from desires

  958. that we have

  959. that are disordered.

  960. But there is good goodness

  961. in the world.

  962. And in fact,

  963. all goodness is a gift

  964. and the greatest gift

  965. that God gives

  966. of goodness

  967. is that God's greatest gift

  968. is that he does something

  969. for us

  970. that we cannot do

  971. for us ourselves

  972. which is to make us

  973. right with him.

  974. You see,

  975. you know,

  976. if you think about it

  977. for a second,

  978. if you're good

  979. thinking that that means

  980. that God will reward you

  981. in some way,

  982. like why won't God

  983. reward me

  984. with eternal life

  985. for all the good things

  986. that I've done?

  987. Like why wouldn't he do that?

  988. Isn't that a good question?

  989. Like I do good things,

  990. why doesn't God reward me

  991. for those good things

  992. or honor me

  993. for those good things?

  994. And honor is just another way

  995. of saying reward

  996. or recognize

  997. and recognize

  998. is just another way

  999. of saying reward.

1000. Like if I do these good things,

  1001. why don't I get recognized

1002. by God in some way

1003. and get some type of reward?

1004. And if you think about that,

1005. if you think about that,

1006. there's two things with it.

  1007. First of all,

  1008. that means you're actually

  1009. motivated by the reward,

  1010. not by God.

  1011. You're motivated

  1012. by the reward,

  1013. not by God.

  1014. But the second thing

  1015. about it is,

  1016. well,

  1017. and that,

  1018. well,

  1019. that's the first thing.

1020. You're not motivated by God.

  1021. You're not motivated

  1022. by the greatest good,

1023. the source of all good.

  1024. You're motivated by something

1025. that that good can give me.

1026. And snuggled into the humility,

  1027. the apparent humility,

1028. is actually a type of pride.

1029. Because we don't desire God.

  1030. We desire something

1031. that God would give us

  1032. in recognition

  1033. for something

  1034. that I have done.

1035. And the fact of the matter

1036. is that if we understand

  1037. that there's something

1038. in us as human beings,

1039. it means at different times

  1040. we just,

1041. and we can't stop doing it.

1042. If you meet a parent

  1043. and they say

  1044. they have a five-year-old

  1045. and their five-year-old

  1046. is perfect,

  1047. you know that's just

  1048. the parents are deluded.

  1049. They're delusional parents

  1050. because you just know

  1051. that they haven't actually

  1052. produced the perfect

  1053. five-year-old.

  1054. I mean,

  1055. we know that,

  1056. right?

  1057. And yet,

  1058. at the same,

  1059. because there's something

  1060. in us

  1061. that just keeps,

  1062. we can't save ourselves.

  1063. So unless God

  1064. does something

  1065. to save us,

  1066. we're completely

  1067. and utterly

  1068. incapable

  1069. of being made right

  1070. with them.

1071. And that's what this text

  1072. says,

  1073. verse 18,

  1074. of his own will,

  1075. he brought us forth

1076. by the word of truth

1077. that we should be kind

  1078. of first fruits

  1079. of his creatures.

  1080. And this is another

1081. one of those wonderful images

1082. like the crown of life.

  1083. The first fruits

  1084. is an image

  1085. of something special

  1086. and precious.

  1087. And just like

  1088. no baby chooses

  1089. to be born,

  1090. fundamentally,

  1091. we don't choose

  1092. to be reborn.

  1093. That prior choice

  1094. is made by God.

  1095. And when we receive

  1096. the word of truth,

  1097. we're receiving something

  1098. that God had already

  1099. decided to give us.

  1100. And he's already done

1101. all that has to be done

  1102. about it.

  1103. And it's a very

  1104. interesting thing

  1105. that it describes us,

  1106. what it means

  1107. is that we receive

  1108. the news about Jesus

  1109. and what he's done

  1110. for us.

  1111. And when we receive

  1112. that news about

  1113. who Jesus is

  1114. and what he's done

  1115. for us,

  1116. we receive him

  1117. and the benefits

  1118. of what he's done

  1119. for us.

  1120. And it's talked about

1121. as a type of word

  1122. of truth.

1123. Truth is a meaning word

  1124. that comes into us

1125. and it's as that word

  1126. comes into us,

  1127. the truth

  1128. comes into us.

  1129. The goodness

  1130. of God,

  1131. a good gift

  1132. of God

  1133. is that his word

  1134. of truth

  1135. comes into us,

1136. that we can receive it

1137. and that when we receive

  1138. this good gift

  1139. of who Jesus is,

  1140. that the fact that,

  1141. remember how I said

  1142. last week,

  1143. some of you might

  1144. remember this,

1145. that James is a very

  1146. interesting thing

1147. about the way he begins.

1148. If you look at the

  1149. historical biographies

  1150. of Jesus,

  1151. the historical records

  1152. of him,

  1153. you'll see that James

  1154. was the younger brother

  1155. of Jesus,

  1156. same mother,

  1157. different father,

  1158. and that James

  1159. thought that Jesus

  1160. was crazy,

  1161. he didn't believe him,

  1162. he mocked him

  1163. and he wasn't around

  1164. when he was dying.

  1165. And what changes him

  1166. is that he knows

  1167. the grave,

  1168. he knows that Jesus

  1169. died and he knows

  1170. the grave is empty

  1171. and Jesus appears

  1172. to him alive,

  1173. resurrected,

  1174. and completely

  1175. changes his life.

  1176. And he understands

  1177. that this message

  1178. of the truth is

  1179. that when Jesus

1180. was dying upon the cross,

  1181. in a sense,

  1182. all of those things

  1183. within me

  1184. that have ever

  1185. desired wrong,

  1186. and everything

1187. that I still will do

  1188. that had been

  1189. desired with wrong,

  1190. in a sense,

  1191. that was laid upon

  1192. Jesus when he died.

  1193. And that everything

  1194. that Jesus did,

  1195. which was just right,

  1196. that he never acted

  1197. in any way

  1198. that wasn't right

  1199. with God,

  1200. and that is offered

  1201. to me.

  1202. And that's what

  1203. the meaning of sacrifice

  1204. is.

  1205. And that this whole

  1206. thing that Jesus

  1207. accomplishes is something

  1208. that God desired

  1209. for us to have

  1210. because he loves us

  1211. and because he's good

  1212. and it's a gift.

1213. And when we receive it,

  1214. we receive something

  1215. vastly more.

  1216. It just,

  1217. we can never have

  1218. earned it.

  1219. We could never have

  1220. accomplished it.

  1221. We don't deserve it.

  1222. And even the word

  1223. truth is so powerful

  1224. because it means

  1225. that God knew

  1226. the truth of George.

  1227. He knew the truth

  1228. about how George

  1229. doesn't have these desires.

  1230. I've never been tempted

  1231. by gambling,

  1232. for instance.

  1233. Just not in me.

  1234. I've never been really

  1235. tempted to be drunk.

  1236. I'm not boasting

  1237. because it's just not

  1238. been a temptation

  1239. of mine.

  1240. And that lives you

1241. a long list of things

1242. I have been tempted to.

  1243. By telling you

1244. I can maybe add one more

  1245. and everything else

  1246. are things

  1247. I've been tempted to.

  1248. And God knew

  1249. the truth

  1250. about all of that

  1251. and still Jesus

  1252. died for me.

  1253. Still Jesus

  1254. died for me.

  1255. And that's the gift

  1256. of life.

  1257. And so the question

  1258. then might be

  1259. how do we grow?

  1260. But God

  1261. the question isn't

  1262. everything comes

1263. from God as a gift.

  1264. So the question isn't

  1265. how do I grow?

  1266. The question is

1267. how does God grow me?

  1268. And that's what

  1269. the last little bit

  1270. comes in.

1271. And that's where we get

  1272. to Stephen Covey

  1273. actually.

  1274. And in fact

  1275. the next verse

  1276. that we look at

  1277. for many of us

1278. I know it is for me

  1279. is a prayer

1280. that I need to pray

  1281. every day

1282. for the rest of my life.

  1283. What does it say?

1284. Look at what it says.

  1285. Verses 19 to 21.

  1286. Know this my beloved

  1287. brothers and sisters.

  1288. Let every person

  1289. be quick to hear

  1290. slow to speak

  1291. slow to anger.

  1292. I don't know about you

  1293. but that's something

1294. that I need to pray

  1295. just about every day

  1296. of my life.

1297. This is what made it

  1298. into Stephen Covey's

1299. list of the seven habits

  1300. of highly effective people.

  1301. Because the fundamental

  1302. problem is that

  1303. most of us

  1304. are far more

  1305. desirous to be

  1306. understood

  1307. than we are

  1308. to understand.

  1309. Most of us

  1310. go into meetings

  1311. wanting to be

  1312. understood

  1313. not to understand.

  1314. Often in

  1315. our marriages

  1316. we want to be

  1317. understood

  1318. not to understand.

  1319. Often divorces

  1320. are connected

  1321. because the other

  1322. person

  1323. one person

  1324. will say

  1325. my husband

  1326. or my wife

  1327. never listened

  1328. to me.

  1329. They stopped

  1330. listening.

  1331. they don't

  1332. know me

  1333. they don't

  1334. care.

  1335. And not only

  1336. is there

  1337. this problem

  1338. that we don't

  1339. understand or

  1340. listen

  1341. but we know

  1342. for a fact

  1343. that when you're

  1344. angry

  1345. you stop

  1346. listening

  1347. altogether.

  1348. I've shared

  1349. with you

  1350. that there

  1351. was a bit

  1352. of a

  1353. Twitter

  1354. storm

  1355. around

  1356. something

  1357. that I

  1358. helped

  1359. organize

  1360. and I

  1361. can tell

  1362. you for

  1363. those

  1364. bleepity bleeps

  1365. involved in the

  1366. media storm

  1367. and proudly

  1368. trying to

  1369. damage

  1370. incomes

  1371. of people

  1372. they didn't

  1373. listen.

  1374. Didn't listen

  1375. in the beginning

  1376. didn't listen

  1377. to go on

  1378. and they

  1379. just

  1380. consumed

  1381. with

  1382. people

  1383. who are

  1384. angry

  1385. we all

  1386. know

  1387. they

  1388. don't

  1389. listen.

  1390. So right

  1391. here

  1392. we'll

  1393. continue

  1394. we know

  1395. this my

  1396. beloved

  1397. brothers

  1398. and

  1399. sisters

  1400. let

  1401. every

  1402. person

  1403. be

  1404. quick

  1405. to

  1406. hear

  1407. slow

  1408. to

  1409. speak

  1410. slow

  1411. to

  1412. anger

  1413. for

  1414. the

  1415. anger

  1416. of man

  1417. does

  1418. not

  1419. produce

  1420. the

  1421. righteousness

  1422. of

  1423. God

  1424. therefore

  1425. put

  1426. away

  1427. all

  1428. filthiness

  1429. and

  1430. rampant

  1431. wickedness

  1432. and

  1433. receive

  1434. with

  1435. meekness

  1436. the

  1437. implanted

  1438. word

  1439. which

  1440. is able

  1441. to

  1442. save

  1443. your

  1444. soul.

  1445. And so

  1446. it's

  1447. saying

  1448. this

  1449. wonderful

  1450. thing

  1451. that

  1452. there's

  1453. a

  1454. wonderful

  1455. line

  1456. and

  1457. I

  1458. think

  1459. it's

  1460. 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  1461. chapter

  1462. 4

  1463. that

  1464. says

  1465. how

  1466. can

  1467. you

  1468. say

  1469. that

  1470. you

  1471. love

  1472. God

  1473. whom

  1474. you

  1475. can't

  1476. see

  1477. if

  1478. you

  1479. don't

  1480. love

  1481. the

  1482. people

  1483. you

  1484. can

  1485. see

  1486. like

  1487. that's

  1488. a

  1489. really

  1490. good

  1491. examination

  1492. of

  1493. conscience

  1494. why

  1495. do

  1496. I

  1497. believe

  1498. I

  1499. love

  1500. God

  1501. when

  1502. I

  1503. actually

  1504. don't

  1505. love

  1506. my

  1507. neighbor

  1508. my

  1509. boss

  1510. my

  1511. kids

  1512. I

  1513. don't

  1514. know

  1515. people

  1516. here

  1517. I

  1518. don't

  1519. know

  1520. and

  1521. it's

  1522. the

  1523. same

  1524. type

  1525. of

  1526. thing

  1527. why

  1528. do

  1529. you

  1530. think

  1531. you

  1532. actually

  1533. are

  1534. good

  1535. at

  1536. listening

  1537. to

  1538. God

  1539. if

  1540. you're

  1541. not

  1542. good

  1543. at

  1544. listening

  1545. to

  1546. people

  1547. like

  1548. that's

  1549. a

  1550. good

  1551. question

  1552. so

  1553. there's

  1554. this

  1555. interesting

  1556. dynamic

  1557. that

  1558. to learn

  1559. to listen

  1560. to

  1561. God

  1562. will

  1563. also

  1564. mean

  1565. that

  1566. I

  1567. learn

  1568. to

  1569. listen

  1570. to

  1571. others

  1572. and

  1573. to

  1574. learn

  1575. to

  1576. listen

  1577. to

  1578. others

  1579. will

  1580. also

  1581. mean

  1582. I'm

  1583. learning

  1584. how

  1585. to

  1586. listen

  1587. to

  1588. God

  1589. it's

  1590. not

  1591. an

  1592. either

  1593. or

  1594. it's

  1595. a

  1596. both

  1597. and

  1598. so

  1599. once

  1600. again

  1601. for

  1602. many

  1603. of

  1604. us

  1605. a

  1606. prayer

  1607. that

  1608. we

  1609. could

  1610. pray

  1611. for

  1612. the

  1613. rest

  1614. of

  1615. our

  1616. lives

  1617. is

  1618. Lord

  1619. today

  1620. help

  1621. me

  1622. to

  1623. be

  1624. very

  1625. quick

  1626. to

  1627. hear

  1628. quick

  1629. to

  1630. understand

  1631. help

  1632. me

  1633. to

  1634. be

  1635. slow

  1636. to

  1637. speak

  1638. and

  1639. slow

  1640. to

  1641. anger

  1642. help

  1643. me

  1644. to

  1645. listen

  1646. well

  1647. Lord

  1648. help

  1649. me

  1650. to

  1651. listen

  1652. well

  1653. and

  1654. Stephen

  1655. Covey

  1656. said

  1657. it's

  1658. actually

  1659. a

  1660. key

  1661. to

  1662. success

  1663. successful

  1664. people

  1665. listen

  1666. well

  1667. understand

  1668. well

  1669. and

  1670. are

  1671. far

  1672. quicker

  1673. to

  1674. understand

  1675. than

  1676. they

  1677. are

  1678. to

  1679. express

  1680. their

  1681. opinions

  1682. or

  1683. to

  1684. get

  1685. angry

  1686. but

  1687. the

  1688. Bible

  1689. goes

  1690. a

  1691. little

  1692. bit

  1693. further

  1694. into

  1695. one

  1696. of

  1697. our

  1698. problems

  1699. and

  1700. it

  1701. talks

  1702. about

  1703. the

  1704. fact

  1705. that

  1706. we

  1707. can't

  1708. just

  1709. listen

  1710. but

  1711. we

  1712. actually

  1713. have

  1714. to

  1715. put

  1716. it

  1717. into

  1718. practice

  1719. in

  1720. some

  1721. way

  1722. to

  1723. really

  1724. be

  1725. able

  1726. to

  1727. listen

  1728. you

  1729. see

  1730. and

  1731. that's

  1732. because

  1733. we'll

  1734. use it

  1735. the other

  1736. way

  1737. around

  1738. my

  1739. wife

  1740. can

  1741. listen

  1742. to

  1743. me

  1744. very

  1745. very

  1746. very

  1747. well

  1748. and

  1749. it

  1750. might

  1751. very

  1752. well

  1753. be

  1754. that

  1755. after

  1756. she's

  1757. listened

  1758. to

  1759. me

  1760. very

  1761. very

  1762. very

  1763. well

  1764. she'll

  1765. say

  1766. George

  1767. you're

  1768. wrong

  1769. and

  1770. that's

  1771. completely

  1772. fair game

  1773. like

  1774. she's

  1775. really

  1776. listened

  1777. and

  1778. after

  1779. listening

  1780. she says

  1781. George

  1782. you're

  1783. wrong

  1784. or

  1785. George

  1786. you're

  1787. selfish

  1788. you

  1789. know

  1790. or

  1791. George

  1792. you're

  1793. unforgiving

  1794. you

  1795. know

  1796. or

  1797. George

  1798. that's

  1799. not

  1800. godly

  1801. you

  1802. know

  1803. George

  1804. that's

  1805. envy

  1806. but we

  1807. can't

  1808. say that

  1809. to

  1810. God

  1811. because

  1812. God's

  1813. only

  1814. good

  1815. so

  1816. what

  1817. it

  1818. says

  1819. here

  1820. is

  1821. very

  1822. very

  1823. interesting

  1824. verses

  1825. 22

  1826. to

  1827. 25

  1828. but

  1829. be

  1830. doers

  1831. of

  1832. the

  1833. word

  1834. and

  1835. not

  1836. hearers

  1837. only

  1838. deceiving

  1839. yourselves

  1840. for

  1841. if

  1842. anyone

  1843. is

  1844. a

  1845. hearer

  1846. of

  1847. the

  1848. word

  1849. and

  1850. not

  1851. a

  1852. doer

  1853. he

  1854. is

  1855. like

  1856. a

  1857. man

  1858. or

  1859. woman

  1860. who

  1861. looks

  1862. intently

  1863. at

  1864. his

  1865. natural

  1866. face

  1867. in

  1868. a

  1869. mirror

  1870. for

  1871. he

  1872. looks

  1873. at

  1874. himself

  1875. and

  1876. goes

  1877. away

  1878. and

  1879. at

  1880. once

  1881. forgets

  1882. what

  1883. he

  1884. was

  1885. like

  1886. but

  1887. the

  1888. one

  1889. who

  1890. looks

  1891. into

  1892. the

  1893. perfect

  1894. law

  1895. of

  1896. liberty

  1897. and

  1898. perseveres

  1899. be

  1900. no

  1901. hearer

  1902. who

  1903. forgets

  1904. but

  1905. a

  1906. doer

  1907. who

  1908. acts

  1909. he

  1910. will

  1911. be

  1912. blessed

  1913. in

  1914. his

  1915. doing

  1916. so

  1917. one

  1918. of

  1919. the

  1920. tragic

  1921. things

  1922. for

  1923. some

  1924. people

  1925. with

  1926. dementia

  1927. and

  1928. it's

  1929. a

  1930. very

  1931. sad

  1932. moment

  1933. when

  1934. you're

  1935. dealing

  1936. with

  1937. a

  1938. loved

  1939. one

  1940. with

  1941. dementia

  1942. is

  1943. when

  1944. they

  1945. no

  1946. longer

  1947. recognize

  1948. you

  1949. but

  1950. there

  1951. can

  1952. be

  1953. people

  1954. with

  1955. dementia

  1956. who

  1957. no

  1958. longer

  1959. recognize

  1960. themselves

  1961. you

  1962. show

  1963. them

  1964. a

  1965. picture

  1966. of

  1967. a

  1968. birthday

  1969. party

  1970. from

  1971. a

  1972. couple

  1973. of

  1974. years

  1975. ago

  1976. and

  1977. you

  1978. can

  1979. tell

  1980. that

  1981. they

  1982. don't

  1983. actually

  1984. recognize

  1985. themselves

  1986. anymore

  1987. and

  1988. the

  1989. Bible

  1990. says

  1991. that's

  1992. the

  1993. human

  1994. condition

  1995. apart

  1996. from

  1997. the

  1998. gospel

  1999. and

  2000. the

  2001. word

  2002. of

  2003. God

  2004. that

  2005. we

  2006. don't

  2007. actually

  2008. recognize

  2009. ourselves

  2010. we

  2011. don't

  2012. actually

  2013. see

  2014. ourselves

  2015. and

  2016. the

  2017. way

  2018. we

  2019. begin

  2020. to

  2021. see

  2022. ourselves

  2023. is

  2024. not

  2025. just

  2026. by

  2027. listening

  2028. to

  2029. the

  2030. word

  2031. but

  2032. doing

  2033. the

  2034. word

  2035. means

  2036. that

  2037. if

  2038. you

  2039. think

  2040. you

  2041. can

  2042. sort

  2043. out

  2044. moral

  2045. dilemmas

  2046. and

  2047. temptations

  2048. just

  2049. by

  2050. thinking

  2051. you're

  2052. deceiving

  2053. yourself

  2054. that

  2055. we

  2056. need

  2057. to

  2058. obey

  2059. our

  2060. way

  2061. to

  2062. clarity

  2063. not

  2064. merely

  2065. think

  2066. our

  2067. way

  2068. to

  2069. clarity

  2070. if

  2071. we

  2072. want

  2073. to

  2074. have

  2075. clarity

  2076. about

  2077. a

  2078. great

  2079. moral

  2080. issue

  2081. but

  2082. aren't

  2083. actually

  2084. willing

  2085. to

  2086. take

  2087. a

  2088. stand

  2089. on

  2090. the

  2091. moral

  2092. issue

  2093. we

  2094. will

  2095. never

  2096. actually

  2097. understand

  2098. the

  2099. moral

  2100. issue

  2101. but

  2102. that's

  2103. not

  2104. kissing

  2105. your

  2106. brain

  2107. goodbye

  2108. because

  2109. as

  2110. I

  2111. said

  2112. to

  2113. listen

  2114. well

  2115. to

  2116. understand

  2117. well

  2118. to

  2119. read

  2120. well

  2121. involves

  2122. the

  2123. mind

  2124. it

  2125. involves

  2126. patience

  2127. it

  2128. involves

  2129. the

  2130. imagination

  2131. it

  2132. involves

  2133. compassion

  2134. and

  2135. entering

  2136. into

  2137. the

  2138. other

  2139. world

  2140. it

  2141. involves

  2142. self

  2143. effacing

  2144. and

  2145. the

  2146. full

  2147. aspect

  2148. of

  2149. the

  2150. person

  2151. to

  2152. really

  2153. listen

  2154. well

  2155. but

  2156. as

  2157. we

  2158. listen

  2159. well

  2160. to

  2161. even

  2162. listen

  2163. more

  2164. deeply

  2165. we

  2166. need

  2167. to

  2168. begin

  2169. to

  2170. obey

  2171. that

  2172. which

  2173. we

  2174. begin

  2175. to

  2176. understand

  2177. you'll

  2178. never

  2179. understand

  2180. the

  2181. biblical

  2182. teaching

  2183. on the

  2184. hold

  2185. of

  2186. money

  2187. unless

  2188. you

  2189. begin

  2190. to

  2191. give

  2192. money

  2193. away

  2194. won't

  2195. happen

  2196. won't

  2197. happen

  2198. you'll

  2199. never

  2200. begin

  2201. to

  2202. understand

  2203. you know

  2204. the dignity

  2205. of a

  2206. human being

  2207. without treating

  2208. human beings

  2209. well

  2210. you'll never

  2211. understand

  2212. marriage

  2213. without trying

  2214. to be

  2215. faithful

  2216. in your

  2217. marriage

  2218. you'll

  2219. never

  2220. understand

  2221. the sweetness

  2222. of the

  2223. word

  2224. without

  2225. reading

  2226. the

  2227. word

  2228. and putting

  2229. into

  2230. practice

  2231. I'm

  2232. saying

  2233. you

  2234. but it's

  2235. all me

  2236. too

  2237. I will

  2238. never

  2239. do

  2240. those

  2241. things

  2242. as well

  2243. I'm

  2244. not

  2245. above

  2246. you

  2247. in that

  2248. type

  2249. of

  2250. sense

  2251. and so

  2252. the

  2253. Bible

  2254. says

  2255. that

  2256. actually

  2257. as we

  2258. read

  2259. the

  2260. Bible

  2261. and

  2262. this

  2263. is

  2264. where

  2265. the

  2266. gospel

  2267. is

  2268. so

  2269. important

  2270. you

  2271. see

  2272. if

  2273. we

  2274. just

  2275. read

  2276. the

  2277. Bible

  2278. and

  2279. we

  2280. understand

  2281. we

  2282. have

  2283. to

  2284. read

  2285. the

  2286. Bible

  2287. to

  2288. understand

  2289. ourselves

  2290. and

  2291. we

  2292. start

  2293. to

  2294. see

  2295. really

  2296. terrible

  2297. things

  2298. about

  2299. ourselves

  2300. like

  2301. it

  2302. can

  2303. start

  2304. to

  2305. make

  2306. you

  2307. realize

  2308. I

  2309. didn't

  2310. realize

  2311. I

  2312. was

  2313. such

  2314. a

  2315. jerk

  2316. I

  2317. didn't

  2318. realize

  2319. that

  2320. money

  2321. had

  2322. such

  2323. a

  2324. control

  2325. in

  2326. my

  2327. life

  2328. I

  2329. didn't

  2330. realize

  2331. I

  2332. was

  2333. so

  2334. consumed

  2335. by

  2336. vanity

  2337. I

  2338. didn't

  2339. realize

  2340. I

  2341. was

  2342. so

  2343. narcissistic

  2344. I

  2345. didn't

  2346. realize

  2347. I

  2348. was

  2349. so

  2350. bad

  2351. at

  2352. keeping

  2353. my

  2354. word

  2355. I

  2356. didn't

  2357. realize

  2358. I

  2359. was

  2360. so

  2361. bad

  2362. at

  2363. being

  2364. just

  2365. preoccupied

  2366. with

  2367. my

  2368. own

  2369. needs

  2370. and

  2371. ignoring

  2372. everybody

  2373. like

  2374. I

  2375. didn't

  2376. realize

  2377. I

  2378. was

  2379. so

  2380. bad

  2381. at

  2382. these

  2383. sins

  2384. of

  2385. omission

  2386. and

  2387. that

  2388. can

  2389. be

  2390. terrifying

  2391. and

  2392. we

  2393. turn

  2394. away

  2395. from

  2396. it

  2397. but

  2398. it's

  2399. only

  2400. as

  2401. the

  2402. gospel

  2403. grips

  2404. us

  2405. and

  2406. we

  2407. understand

  2408. that

  2409. made

  2410. right

  2411. with

  2412. God

  2413. is

  2414. something

  2415. Jesus

  2416. did

  2417. for

  2418. us

  2419. and

  2420. he

  2421. knew

  2422. everything

  2423. there

  2424. was

  2425. to

  2426. know

  2427. about

  2428. us

  2429. when

  2430. he

  2431. made

  2432. us

  2433. right

  2434. with

  2435. him

  2436. that

  2437. as

  2438. that

  2439. truth

  2440. becomes

  2441. more

  2442. precious

  2443. and

  2444. deep

  2445. to

  2446. our

  2447. hearts

  2448. that

  2449. it

  2450. can

  2451. begin

  2452. to

  2453. give

  2454. us

  2455. the

  2456. liberty

  2457. to

  2458. see

  2459. ourselves

  2460. in

  2461. the

  2462. word

  2463. and

  2464. say

  2465. gosh

  2466. I

  2467. do

  2468. have

  2469. an

  2470. anger

  2471. problem

  2472. gosh

  2473. I

  2474. do

  2475. have

  2476. a

  2477. greed

  2478. problem

  2479. gosh

  2480. I

  2481. do

  2482. have

  2483. a

  2484. lack

  2485. of

  2486. compassion

  2487. problem

  2488. for

  2489. the

  2490. poor

  2491. gosh

  2492. I

  2493. I

  2494. do

  2495. have

  2496. a

  2497. hatred

  2498. problem

  2499. of

  2500. those

  2501. who

  2502. vote

  2503. different

  2504. ways

  2505. on

  2506. politics

  2507. than

  2508. me

  2509. gosh

  2510. I

  2511. do

  2512. have

  2513. a

  2514. listening

  2515. problem

  2516. it's

  2517. only

  2518. as

  2519. the

  2520. gospel

  2521. grips

  2522. us

  2523. that

  2524. we

  2525. can

  2526. then

  2527. enter

  2528. into

  2529. the

  2530. word

  2531. and

  2532. the

  2533. word

  2534. starts

  2535. to

  2536. reveal

  2537. who

  2538. we

  2539. are

  2540. so

  2541. we

  2542. can

  2543. see

  2544. ourselves

  2545. and

  2546. begin

  2547. to

  2548. work

  2549. on

  2550. it

  2551. with

  2552. others

  2553. let's

  2554. please

  2555. stand

  2556. stand

  2557. let's

  2558. bow our

  2559. heads

  2560. in

  2561. prayer

  2562. father

  2563. we give

  2564. you

  2565. thanks

  2566. and

  2567. praise

  2568. that

  2569. you

  2570. desire

  2571. for

  2572. your

  2573. children

  2574. liberty

  2575. you

  2576. desire

  2577. for

  2578. us

  2579. to

  2580. be

  2581. free

  2582. you

  2583. desire

  2584. us

  2585. to

  2586. have

  2587. more

  2588. life

  2589. you

  2590. desire

  2591. us

  2592. to

  2593. have

  2594. a

  2595. good

  2596. relationship

  2597. with

  2598. you

  2599. you

  2600. desire

  2601. us

  2602. father

  2603. to

  2604. be

  2605. filled

  2606. with

  2607. gratitude

  2608. and

  2609. generosity

  2610. to

  2611. love

  2612. the

  2613. truth

  2614. to

  2615. hate

  2616. lies

  2617. we

  2618. give

  2619. you

  2620. thanks

  2621. and

  2622. praise

  2623. your

  2624. desire

  2625. for

  2626. us

  2627. is

  2628. that

  2629. we

  2630. will

  2631. leave

  2632. self

  2633. deception

  2634. and

  2635. deceiving

  2636. of

  2637. others

  2638. and

  2639. false

  2640. fronts

  2641. that

  2642. we

  2643. will

  2644. know

  2645. the

  2646. truth

  2647. about

  2648. ourselves

  2649. and

  2650. not

  2651. be

  2652. deceived

  2653. and

  2654. know

  2655. the

  2656. truth

  2657. about

  2658. others

  2659. and

  2660. not

  2661. be

  2662. despairing

  2663. or

  2664. deceived

  2665. we

  2666. give

  2667. you

  2668. thanks

  2669. and

  2670. praise

  2671. you

  2672. desire

  2673. these

  2674. things

  2675. for

  2676. us

  2677. in

  2678. the

  2679. security

  2680. of

  2681. the

  2682. gospel

  2683. and

  2684. in

  2685. the

  2686. truth

  2687. of

  2688. your

  2689. word

  2690. and

  2691. we

  2692. ask

  2693. father

  2694. that

  2695. you

  2696. would

  2697. make

  2698. us

  2699. disciples

  2700. of

  2701. Jesus

  2702. who

  2703. are

  2704. gripped
