  1. God.

  2. Please have seats.

  3. So if you turn with me and you're my host, I have to ask chapter 11.

  4. I'm going to think about another lesson from the life of Barnabas.

  5. We're going to see Jesus' good news mission, which is unstoppable.

  6. Chapter 11 is going to remind us that the true God is a missionary God.

  7. In the year 2023, the year in which we love, here is the statistic, 360 million believers

  8. in the Lord Jesus will face intense persecution and discrimination.

  9. So that's one in seven of every follower of Jesus will face some form of discrimination

  10. as governments, as other religions, as communities look to stamp out the message of Jesus.

  11. But wonderfully, what we're seeing at the same time is that Christianity continues to grow

  12. and often is growing most quickly in places where there is the greatest opposition.

  13. This year also, here's another statistic, 47% of all Christians in the world are now living

  14. in countries that would be described as non-Christian majority.

  15. So about 100 years ago, 95% of the world that was Christian lived in what we would call Christian

  16. countries.

  17. That's changing because the church of Jesus is spreading and the good news is spreading.

  18. People are more likely than ever before to meet someone in their lifetime who is a Christian.

  19. So there's more opportunities for people to hear the good news.

  20. Now, why is that?

  21. We can think about global trends and phenomena, but we need to understand that behind all that

  22. lies God's desire to reach the lost, God's desire that men and women and boys and girls

  23. be reconciled to Him.

  24. What we're seeing in chapter 11, and especially when you think about the life of Barnabas and

  25. these early Christians in Antioch, is that Jesus' mission is going to keep on growing,

  26. and that this is profoundly good news for us and for our world.

  27. Because Jesus is on a mission to rescue and to restore, to pour out the love of God, to

  28. bring grace that would heal great divisions in society.

  29. So there's two things that we're going to think about today.

  30. One that's going to take up the majority of our time, and it's this.

  31. Jesus is good news for the world.

  32. Okay, so before we get that to there, we'll go back to the beginning of the book of Acts.

  33. Acts chapter 1, verse 8, Jesus says to His disciples, just before going back to heaven,

    Acts 1:8

  34. you will be my witnesses in Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  35. And then the story of Acts, as Luke tells it, is the story of that mission of Jesus being

  36. accomplished.

  37. And you can trace out chapters 1 to 7, the message of Jesus spreads through the region of

  38. Judea.

  39. Then we get to chapter 7, and Stephen is the first martyr, the first follower of Jesus

  40. who's killed for his faith.

  41. That leads to persecution in Judea.

  42. That leads to the church spreading.

  43. Chapters 8 and 9, persecution spreads good news to Samaria.

  44. And then chapters 10 and 11, persecution spreads good news to the Greeks, to the Gentiles, to

  45. the non-Jewish world.

  46. First, as Peter is led to the house of Cornelius.

  47. And then, from verse 19 onwards in chapter 11, we discover what happens in Antioch.

  48. So Antioch is in modern-day Turkey.

  49. So three things to notice from verses 19 to 21 that we've just read.

  50. The first is to notice Jesus' growing mission.

  51. Verse 19, those who'd been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was

  52. killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews.

  53. Some of them, however, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the

  54. good news about the Lord Jesus.

  55. So some things to notice.

  56. First of all, notice that the killing of Stephen doesn't stop the church from spreading and

  57. from spreading good news.

  58. Fear doesn't stop them.

  59. Notice as well that the slowness of some of the Jewish believers doesn't stop the message

  60. of Jesus from spreading.

  61. So there's obviously some Jewish Christians who are thinking, well, why would someone who's

  62. not from our country need to hear about Jesus?

  63. Isn't he just our Savior?

  64. But despite their slowness, it doesn't stop.

  65. The church continues to spread.

  66. And notice that now it spreads to reach the Greeks.

  67. So now the good news from God through Jesus has crossed languages, has crossed cultures.

  68. And it's come to this place called Antioch.

  69. So Antioch was a big city.

  70. Actually, it was probably about the same size as Edinburgh, about half a million people.

  71. It was the third city in the Roman Empire.

  72. So you had Rome, then you had Alexandria, and then you had Antioch.

  73. It was significant because it was a port city.

  74. So it was a very busy commercial center.

  75. It was known for being very diverse.

  76. People from all nations setting up trade there, setting up home there, very cosmopolitan.

  77. It was also known for the worship of Roman gods, especially Diana.

  78. Her big temple shrine was just five miles away.

  79. And it was known in its day for being a very immoral city.

  80. So there's a little bit of background to remind us and to encourage us that the good news of Jesus

  81. is believed by many in that city and into that culture, that hearts were won over, that ways of worship, ways of life were being changed.

  82. People were worshiping.

  83. Lots of people were worshiping pagan gods in Antioch.

  84. And to worship a pagan god, what were you doing?

  85. You were looking for someone who is the Lord, someone who would give you the good life.

  86. And to get that good life, what you had to do was to offer sacrifices.

  87. So you had a whole system of religion that was based on this.

  88. But then the good news, the gospel of Jesus comes, and it's different.

  89. Because these Christians will talk about the true Lord, who's not just Lord over some of the world,

  90. but over all the world.

  91. The good life that Jesus offers is eternal life.

  92. It's the promise of knowing life with God.

  93. And it's not on the basis of a sacrifice that a worshiper would make.

  94. Life with God comes because of the sacrifice Jesus, the Son of God, makes.

  95. And so the message found a good hearing,

  96. because Jesus is what every heart is longing for.

  97. However, they didn't know it, but when they heard about Jesus,

  98. then they understood.

  99. He's the one that we need.

  100. He's the one we should worship.

  101. So Jesus' growing mission.

  102. The second thing to notice is that Jesus is the goal of mission.

  103. I'm going to see this in verse 20 and 21.

  104. And I think it's important for us to notice this,

  105. because there could be a negative view of world mission today.

  106. Sometimes you'll hear people negatively speaking about the spread of Christianity.

  107. They'll have this false idea that it's a Western religion.

  108. So how can the West impose their religion or impose their cultural values?

  109. Let's not spread the Christian message,

  110. because isn't it true that religion just causes war and it divides?

  111. We'll set against that.

  112. There's a very positive view of mission in these verses,

  113. because the mission is focused entirely on the Lord Jesus.

  114. Let's see that together.

  115. Verse 20 and 21.

  116. They began to tell them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

  117. The Lord's hand was with them,

  118. and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

  119. You see how central the Lord is there?

  120. He's the source of their mission.

  121. When it talks about the Lord's hand was with them,

  122. that means that it's the Lord Jesus who's giving power for mission.

  123. He's motivating their mission, and he gives the success.

  124. He's also the content of the mission.

  125. Who do they go and talk about?

  126. They go and talk about the good news that Jesus,

  127. the Son of God, has come to be the Savior.

  128. They're not saying convert to a set of practices,

  129. to a set of cultural values.

  130. People are being invited to know their Lord,

  131. their Maker, their Savior.

  132. And notice, too, that Jesus is the goal of the mission.

  133. Success comes, end of verse 21,

  134. when people turn to the Lord.

  135. So instead of turning to an idol,

  136. instead of turning to a statue or some created thing,

  137. now they're giving their heart,

  138. they're giving their loyalty and love and worship

  139. to the Lord Jesus.

  140. And as this happens,

  141. one of the great barriers of the ancient world

  142. is being broken down.

  143. The barrier between Jewish people and Gentile people

  144. is torn down by Jesus.

  145. Because we are all one in Christ Jesus.

  146. It's a message of good news for all people.

  147. Why is it that the people in Antioch

  148. are willing to believe?

  149. Why are they willing to leave behind

  150. their old way of life,

  151. their old religious practices?

  152. Why are they willing to count the cost

  153. to become a follower of Jesus,

  154. knowing it will likely mean opposition,

  155. exclusion, hostility?

  156. It's because they hear the call of Jesus

  157. and God gives them the gift of faith.

  158. They see the glory of Jesus

  159. and they understand that Jesus is better.

  160. So Jesus is the goal of mission.

  161. Another thing we need to see

  162. is that Jesus is the good news of mission.

  163. So he's the content

  164. and that content is good news.

  165. And good news is meant to be shared.

  166. So before we get to our text,

  167. boys and girls especially,

  168. let me just talk to you for a moment.

  169. We got a new puppy this week.

  170. Some of us know that.

  171. It was a big surprise.

  172. Actually, it was a bit of a surprise.

  173. But it was a surprise to our boys.

  174. So we got Teddy.

  175. He's a little labradoodle.

  176. And we had,

  177. we knew on Monday that we were going to get him,

  178. but we didn't tell the boys

  179. until Tuesday afternoon.

  180. That was so difficult for me

  181. because I was with them all morning

  182. and I desperately wanted to share

  183. that good news

  184. because I knew it would make them really happy.

  185. And we all are.

  186. But you know,

  187. my question since then has been,

  188. why don't I always feel like that

  189. when it comes to sharing

  190. the far, far better good news about Jesus?

  191. I wonder if you can relate to that.

  192. We gladly, readily share good news,

  193. but sometimes we struggle

  194. to share the good news of Jesus.

  195. Think about what's happening in chapter 11.

  196. Sometimes it's because the fear of opposition.

  197. Maybe we're not sure

  198. how the other person's going to respond.

  199. Sometimes, perhaps,

  200. it's because we're slow to see

  201. that everybody needs Jesus.

  202. By and large,

  203. we live perhaps surrounded by people

  204. who have plenty money.

  205. They seem pretty content.

  206. Maybe we can find it hard to see beyond that

  207. to see people's spiritual need.

  208. But sometimes,

  209. I think perhaps it's because

  210. maybe in our busyness,

  211. we lose focus,

  212. even as believers,

  213. on the goodness of the gospel.

  214. On how good Jesus is.

  215. On the cost that he was willing to pay

  216. for our rescue.

  217. On the wonderful treasure

  218. that we have for now and for eternity.

  219. But that wasn't the case,

  220. was it,

  221. for these unnamed Christians

  222. who boldly, courageously shared in Antioch.

  223. So they've come to discover

  224. Jesus was on a search and rescue mission

  225. for the whole world

  226. to bring people to God.

  227. He knew Jesus was Savior

  228. for all people in all nations.

  229. They knew the story of Cornelius.

  230. So they know this is too good

  231. to keep quiet.

  232. So what we're going to do

  233. is we're going to use Acts chapter 11

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  234. as a window for us

  235. to remind us or to show us

  236. that Jesus is really good news for us,

  237. really good news for our world.

  238. Whoever we are today,

  239. Jesus is good news for us.

  240. One aspect of the good news

  241. that we need to recognize

  242. is that in Jesus,

  243. God saves.

  244. This was actually the message

  245. that Cornelius received.

  246. So in chapter 11, verse 14,

  247. he was told that Peter would come,

  248. follower of Jesus,

  249. and he will bring you a message

  250. through which you

  251. and all your household

  252. will be saved.

  253. So if you're new to Christianity,

  254. maybe you wonder,

  255. why do Christians talk about

  256. being saved and salvation?

  257. To make sense of it,

  258. I think it's helpful for us

  259. to go back

  260. and to consider the big story

  261. of the human race,

  262. maybe especially to think back

  263. to how our Bible begins,

  264. Genesis 1 to 3.

  265. We discover there

  266. in the early chapters

  267. of the book of Genesis

  268. that God made

  269. the first two people,

  270. Adam and Eve,

  271. they were made in His image,

  272. and they were made to know God.

  273. Indeed, the first people

  274. were made to enjoy

  275. perfect relationships

  276. with one another,

  277. with the world that God had made,

  278. and with their God.

  279. When we read about life

  280. in the beginning,

  281. we can understand

  282. it's the world we all long for,

  283. a world of perfect peace

  284. and life and love.

  285. But then,

  286. something went wrong.

  287. In Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  288. we discover Adam and Eve,

  289. these first people

  290. turning their backs on God.

  291. And that explains to us

  292. what we need to be saved from.

  293. To understand salvation,

  294. we need to understand

  295. what's the danger,

  296. what do we need to be saved from?

  297. We need to be saved from sin.

  298. Sin, as we see it from Adam and Eve

  299. and in our own hearts,

  300. is whenever we break

  301. one of God's commands.

  302. Sin is whenever we believe

  303. the false promises of sin.

  304. This says,

  305. rejecting God is good,

  306. following our own way is better.

  307. Sin is rejecting the rule of God

  308. to choose to live for,

  309. to find our happiness,

  310. to base our identity

  311. and purpose in life

  312. on something other,

  313. someone other,

  314. than the one true God.

  315. And we need to be saved from sin

  316. because the effect of sin

  317. is separation.

  318. So in the story of Adam and Eve,

  319. as soon as they sin,

  320. we find them hiding.

  321. We find their shame.

  322. We were made for life with God.

  323. But our sin and our guilt

  324. cuts us off from our God.

  325. We were made to know God

  326. living within us,

  327. but now because of sin,

  328. we only have self at the center.

  329. And that's bad news

  330. because it tends to make us selfish.

  331. We need our God,

  332. but by ourselves,

  333. we cannot get back into the garden.

  334. We cannot get our way back

  335. to life with God.

  336. So sin separates.

  337. And sin and separation,

  338. in the end,

  339. leads to spiritual death.

  340. Adam and Eve were told

  341. that if you sin,

  342. you'll die.

  343. The Bible says

  344. the wages of sin is death.

  345. Because of sin,

  346. physical death comes,

  347. but so too

  348. does spiritual judgment,

  349. spiritual death,

  350. the reality of hell.

  351. And this is not the way

  352. it's supposed to be.

  353. We were made for life.

  354. We were made for eternal life,

  355. made for life with God.

  356. But we have turned our back on that,

  357. and that's what we need

  358. to be saved from.

  359. We need to be saved

  360. from the power of sin.

  361. Sin functions

  362. like a drug addiction.

  363. It kills us,

  364. and it has a hold on us,

  365. and we cannot break free from it.

  366. Or it's like a snake bite,

  367. and its poison is in our system,

  368. and in the end,

  369. it will destroy us.

  370. And so as we understand

  371. what the Bible says

  372. about what do we need

  373. to be saved from,

  374. the question then becomes,

  375. well, how can anyone be saved?

  376. How can I be saved?

  377. Where does freedom come from?

  378. What's the cure?

  379. Where's the good news?

  380. And in Genesis 3,

  381. we discover there's good news.

  382. There's a promise

  383. that Adam and Eve,

  384. in their sin,

  385. God promised

  386. one from their family,

  387. a seed

  388. who would defeat their enemy,

  389. who would crush

  390. the head of the serpent,

  391. who would bring good news.

  392. And that promise is fulfilled.

  393. Jesus,

  394. he's the Savior.

  395. And it's this good news

  396. that comes to Antioch.

  397. These Christians can say,

  398. listen,

  399. you cannot save yourself.

  400. Your idols cannot save,

  401. and they cannot give you

  402. lasting happiness,

  403. but Jesus can.

  404. That problem of sin

  405. that we all have,

  406. the answer is found

  407. in Jesus.

  408. Jesus,

  409. the substitute.

  410. So Jesus comes,

  411. the Son of God

  412. becomes truly human.

  413. And in his life,

  414. he always obeys his Father.

  415. He always pleases his Father.

  416. He fulfills the demands

  417. of the law,

  418. the law that we break,

  419. and he does that

  420. on our behalf.

  421. And then Jesus,

  422. the substitute,

  423. not only does he live for us,

  424. he also dies for us.

  425. He dies as a sacrifice,

  426. and as he dies on the cross,

  427. he is carrying

  428. your sin

  429. and my sin.

  430. The Bible says

  431. he is crushed

  432. for our sin.

  433. And in his sacrificial death,

  434. he completely covers

  435. over our sin

  436. so that we can be declared

  437. righteous.

  438. The problem of separation

  439. from our God,

  440. the answer is found

  441. in Jesus.

  442. One thing we discover

  443. as Jesus dies

  444. on the cross,

  445. as he has been

  446. abandoned by his friends,

  447. as he's been whipped

  448. and beaten,

  449. as a crown of thorns

  450. has been pulled

  451. onto his head,

  452. as he's been nailed

  453. to the cross,

  454. the greatest pain

  455. for Jesus

  456. is that sense

  457. of feeling

  458. forsaken

  459. or abandoned

  460. by his Father.

  461. My God,

  462. my God,

  463. why have you forsaken me?

  464. Why does Jesus

  465. go to that dark place?

  466. Jesus feels abandoned

  467. so that you and I

  468. might be welcomed

  469. as we trust in Jesus.

  470. And then Jesus

  471. sends from heaven

  472. the Holy Spirit.

  473. So now we're not

  474. separate from God,

  475. rather God

  476. comes to live

  477. in our hearts.

  478. That God is here

  479. right now

  480. by his Spirit.

  481. And the problem

  482. of spiritual death,

  483. that's also answered

  484. through Jesus,

  485. through his death

  486. and his resurrection.

  487. As Jesus goes

  488. under the judgment

  489. of God,

  490. he experiences

  491. hell on earth

  492. for us

  493. so that we can

  494. enjoy heaven

  495. by trusting in him

  496. and his work.

  497. He defeated death.

  498. And having defeated death,

  499. he gives the gift

  500. of eternal life

  501. and he promises

  502. an eternal home

  503. with him,

  504. with our God

  505. and King

  506. in the new world

  507. he will bring in.

  508. In Jesus,

  509. God saves.

  510. That's good news

  511. for the world.

  512. And in Jesus,

  513. secondly,

  514. God blesses.

  515. So there's this

  516. really interesting

  517. discussion

  518. back in chapter 11

  519. verses 15 to 17

  520. between Peter

  521. and some people

  522. who are wondering

  523. how could you go

  524. to Gentiles

  525. and speak to them

  526. about Jesus?

  527. And he says to them,

  528. listen,

  529. they have the same

  530. Holy Spirit

  531. as we do.

  532. God has given

  533. the same gift.

  534. They share the same

  535. Savior.

  536. The church is one.

  537. And again,

  538. if we step back

  539. to the beginning

  540. of the Bible,

  541. we discover,

  542. just as in Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  543. chapter 3,

  544. there was a promise,

  545. here is a seed

  546. to be sent

  547. and he'll save.

  548. In Genesis 12,

  549. a promise comes

  550. to Abraham

  551. that is a seed,

  552. there's someone

  553. from your family

  554. who will bless

  555. the nations

  556. of the world.

  557. And this is the good news

  558. that Antioch hears.

  559. Jesus isn't just

  560. for people over there.

  561. He's not just

  562. for some kind of,

  563. he's for all people.

  564. Jesus is God's way

  565. to extend blessing

  566. and peace

  567. and life

  568. to all nations

  569. and all kinds

  570. of people.

  571. That's still

  572. the good news today.

  573. It's good news for us.

  574. Whatever nation

  575. we are from,

  576. whatever country

  577. we come from,

  578. whatever region

  579. we're from,

  580. Jesus would be good news

  581. for us today.

  582. There is one gift,

  583. the Holy Spirit

  584. for Jew and for Gentile.

  585. So any believer

  586. knows life

  587. from God

  588. and knows life

  589. with God.

  590. The power of God,

  591. the love of God,

  592. the friendship of God,

  593. we have it

  594. through Jesus

  595. and by the Holy Spirit.

  596. And again,

  597. this blessing

  598. that extends

  599. to all nations,

  600. again,

  601. it means that Jesus

  602. is tearing down

  603. those dividing lines

  604. that we often set up.

  605. The lines that divide

  606. different people

  607. and different cultures.

  608. When the message

  609. of Christianity

  610. is truly understood

  611. and practiced,

  612. it doesn't create war.

  613. It doesn't bring division.

  614. Rather,

  615. it brings peace

  616. and it brings healing

  617. because Jesus forgives

  618. and Jesus reconciles.

  619. And so we see

  620. this wonderful promise

  621. being fulfilled

  622. that Jesus will bless

  623. the nations.

  624. And we can look ahead,

  625. Revelation chapter 7,

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  626. we have this promise

  627. of what it will look like

  628. when it's fulfilled.

  629. In heaven,

  630. there's this image

  631. of Jesus on his throne

  632. and he's being worshipped

  633. by people

  634. from every language

  635. and every nation

  636. and every people group.

  637. We're all one

  638. in Christ Jesus.

  639. And when we understand that,

  640. we understand

  641. why these first Christians

  642. were so excited

  643. to share good news.

  644. This is why we call

  645. the message

  646. of the Christian faith

  647. good news

  648. because it answers

  649. the deepest human need

  650. of our heart,

  651. our sin,

  652. and our guilt,

  653. and our need

  654. to be right with God.

  655. We call it good news

  656. because it's the way

  657. into God's blessing.

  658. God has sent Jesus

  659. in order to fix

  660. what is broken,

  661. to give us entry

  662. into the relationship

  663. and the life

  664. that we were made for.

  665. We call Jesus good news

  666. because his forgiveness,

  667. his peace,

  668. promises a better way

  669. than division

  670. and hostility

  671. in the Savior

  672. who reconciles

  673. and brings peace.

  674. And it's good news

  675. because to receive it,

  676. we don't say,

  677. well, you have to become

  678. a certain type of person

  679. or you don't have to act

  680. a certain kind of way.

  681. You don't need to

  682. make great sacrifices

  683. or go on some

  684. special journey.

  685. No, you must believe

  686. in the Lord Jesus

  687. and you will be saved.

  688. We must put our faith

  689. in the Lord Jesus.

  690. We must turn away

  691. from whatever we trusted

  692. in before

  693. in order to trust

  694. in him as our Lord,

  695. to receive him

  696. as God's wonderful gift.

  697. So that's our first point.

  698. Jesus is good news

  699. to the world.

  700. Our second point,

  701. super, super brief,

  702. but it's also really important

  703. is that Jesus continues

  704. his mission

  705. through his church.

  706. So we've emphasized

  707. that vital truth

  708. that it's Jesus

  709. who gives the power

  710. for mission.

  711. It's Jesus

  712. who is the content

  713. of mission.

  714. Jesus is the goal

  715. of mission.

  716. So truly and really,

  717. it is all about Jesus,

  718. but we also need

  719. this other vital truth.

  720. Jesus uses his people,

  721. his church,

  722. to achieve

  723. his purposes

  724. to carry out

  725. his mission.

  726. So our response

  727. as the people of God

  728. is not to sit back

  729. and say,

  730. well, Jesus has got this,

  731. so I don't need

  732. to do anything.

  733. It's also not

  734. to stress out

  735. and say,

  736. I need to save the world.

  737. Our response

  738. is to serve

  739. our Savior,

  740. Lord, and Master

  741. with his help

  742. motivated by his love

  743. and grace.

  744. We've already seen it

  745. as these unnamed believers

  746. continue the mission

  747. of Jesus in Antioch.

  748. It's not just apostles

  749. who bring the good news,

  750. who begin to cause

  751. the church to grow.

  752. Christianity grows

  753. as these unnamed believers

  754. boldly share.

  755. And what happens next,

  756. this is in verse 22

  757. to 24,

  758. the Jerusalem church

  759. hears what's going on.

  760. Verse 22,

  761. news of this

  762. reached the church

  763. in Jerusalem

  764. and they sent Barnabas

  765. to Antioch.

  766. So they want to validate,

  767. find out what's going on

  768. and they send

  769. the perfect guy

  770. for the job.

  771. So we know that

  772. Barnabas' real name

  773. is Joseph,

  774. but this is his nickname,

  775. Son of Encouragement.

  776. So we've been thinking

  777. about how Barnabas

  778. is an encouragement

  779. and we're going to see

  780. it again here.

  781. Three very brief points

  782. to notice

  783. and some questions

  784. to ask

  785. about how Barnabas

  786. helps to continue

  787. the mission of Jesus.

  788. First,

  789. verse 23,

  790. Barnabas encourages

  791. new believers.

  792. So look with me

  793. at verse 23.

  794. When Barnabas arrived

  795. and saw what the grace

  796. of God had done,

  797. he was glad

  798. and encouraged them all

  799. to remain true

  800. to the Lord.

  801. He was glad.

  802. Here is the power

  803. of encouragement.

  804. Again,

  805. boys and girls,

  806. I'm going to stick

  807. with the puppy theme

  808. for a moment.

  809. if you've ever had

  810. to help to train a puppy,

  811. you will know

  812. that what you need to do

  813. is to encourage

  814. and praise

  815. and reward

  816. good behavior

  817. when and if you see it,

  818. which with a puppy

  819. doesn't always come

  820. that often.

  821. But the power

  822. of encouragement

  823. is what helps

  824. a puppy be trained

  825. towards obedience.

  826. But you probably

  827. also know,

  828. and all of us,

  829. I think,

  830. know,

  831. the power

  832. and the beauty

  833. of encouragement

  834. in our lives.

  835. Someone who's got

  836. our backs,

  837. someone who says,

  838. you can do this,

  839. someone who says,

  840. I can see

  841. that you're making progress.

  842. The power of encouragement

  843. is real.

  844. Think about what Barnabas does

  845. for these new Christians

  846. in Antioch,

  847. far away from the center

  848. in Jerusalem.

  849. He says to them,

  850. I can see

  851. that Jesus

  852. has really changed you.

  853. I can see

  854. that God

  855. has worked

  856. powerfully in you.

  857. I can say

  858. that you belong

  859. to Jesus,

  860. you belong

  861. to his church.

  862. I can see

  863. and I'm glad

  864. that you're living

  865. with faith

  866. and obedience.

  867. Now imagine

  868. the difference

  869. that that's going

  870. to make

  871. to these new believers,

  872. to be encouraged

  873. by an encourager.

  874. So my question,

  875. my challenge,

  876. my invitation

  877. to myself

  878. and to all of us

  879. is this,

  880. who can you

  881. and I

  882. encourage

  883. spiritually

  884. this week?

  885. Who can you say,

  886. I'm so glad

  887. to see your faith

  888. and obedience

  889. at work?

  890. How can you

  891. and I

  892. do that

  893. so that we

  894. would follow

  895. Barnabas

  896. in encouraging

  897. believers

  898. in the mission

  899. of God?

  900. Second thing,

  901. Barnabas encourages

  902. perseverance.

  903. Again,

  904. verse 23,

  905. he encouraged

  906. them all

  907. to remain

  908. true to the Lord

  909. with all

  910. their hearts.

  911. Faith,

  912. as has often

  913. been said,

  914. is a marathon

  915. and not a sprint.

  916. It's not how

  917. we begin

  918. that matters,

  919. it's how we run

  920. the race,

  921. it's how we finish.

  922. Barnabas encourages

  923. them to persevere.

  924. Keep going

  925. when trials come.

  926. Persevere

  927. by being

  928. wholehearted

  929. in your commitment

  930. to Jesus.

  931. Show your loyalty

  932. to him

  933. and not

  934. to those

  935. idols

  936. that you

  937. used to

  938. trust in.

  939. You may

  940. have seen

  941. on the news,

  942. you may actually

  943. have seen

  944. on the streets

  945. that there

  946. is all kinds

  947. of road

  948. cycling world

  949. championships

  950. happening.

  951. Perth,

  952. Stirling,

  953. Edinburgh,

  954. Glasgow,

  955. those big

  956. long distance

  957. races.

  958. I don't know

  959. if they need

  960. water stations,

  961. but they definitely

  962. have water stations

  963. at a marathon.

  964. Think of a marathon,

  965. think of those

  966. water stations,

  967. tired runners

  968. come for a break,

  969. think of those

  970. water bottle

  971. passers.

  972. How refreshing

  973. for that exhausting

  974. journey to get

  975. a drink of water.

  976. Who can you

  977. and I

  978. refresh

  979. this week

  980. in faith

  981. to encourage

  982. someone to

  983. persevere,

  984. to keep their

  985. eyes fixed

  986. on Jesus,

  987. to focus

  988. on the

  989. eternal

  990. prize.

  991. The last

  992. way that

  993. Jesus continues

  994. his mission

  995. through Barnabas,

  996. verse 24,

  997. Barnabas encourages

  998. faith by

  999. his witness.

  1000. Listen to this

  1001. wonderful testimony

  1002. from Luke

  1003. as to the

  1004. character of

  1005. Barnabas.

  1006. I imagine

  1007. for all of us

  1008. this is something

  1009. that we would

  1010. love people

  1011. to say of us.

  1012. He was a good

  1013. man,

  1014. full of the

  1015. Holy Spirit

  1016. and faith,

  1017. and a great

  1018. number of people

  1019. were brought

  1020. to the Lord.

  1021. So here's this

  1022. wonderful thing,

  1023. so Barnabas is

  1024. living out his

  1025. faith day by day

  1026. in Antioch.

  1027. He's speaking

  1028. and he's sharing

  1029. and he's encouraging

  1030. and the impact

  1031. is there's more

  1032. followers of Jesus.

  1033. Let's never

  1034. underestimate the

  1035. power of

  1036. lifestyle evangelism.

  1037. Let's not

  1038. underestimate the

  1039. power of every

  1040. day resolving

  1041. to live for

  1042. Jesus in our

  1043. family, our

  1044. workplace.

  1045. We go back to

  1046. school to work

  1047. hard and to

  1048. work well, to

  1049. be good

  1050. neighbors, to

  1051. be kind, to

  1052. be honest, and

  1053. to be ready to

  1054. speak about Jesus

  1055. when we get a

  1056. chance.

  1057. Robert Murray

  1058. McShane, who

  1059. was ministering

  1060. St. Peter's in

  1061. Dundee in the

  1062. 19th century,

  1063. said this, he

  1064. said, a

  1065. Christian, love

  1066. this definition,

  1067. a Christian is a

  1068. person who makes

  1069. it easy for

  1070. others to

  1071. believe in

  1072. God.

  1073. A Christian is a

  1074. person who makes

  1075. it easy for

  1076. others to

  1077. believe in

  1078. God.

  1079. In that, Barnabas

  1080. is a wonderful

  1081. ambassador, isn't

  1082. he?

  1083. Is that what

  1084. people would say

  1085. of us as a

  1086. church?

  1087. That this church

  1088. makes it easy for

  1089. others to believe

  1090. in God and that

  1091. he's good news?

  1092. Is that what

  1093. people would say

  1094. of our lives?

  1095. Let's ask the

  1096. Spirit to be

  1097. convicting us, to

  1098. be showing us, if

  1099. there are areas

  1100. where perhaps we

  1101. make it difficult for

  1102. others to believe

  1103. in God.

  1104. That's because we'd

  1105. want others to be

  1106. seeing the goodness

  1107. of Jesus.

  1108. Acts 11 is a

  1109. wonderful lesson

1110. that our God is a

  1111. missionary God, that

  1112. Jesus continues his

  1113. mission in the world,

  1114. and he does that

  1115. through people and

  1116. through churches like

  1117. us.

  1118. Through Christians

  1119. sharing the good

  1120. news of Jesus the

  1121. Savior.

1122. As the grace of God

  1123. transforms lives and

  1124. works itself into

  1125. cultures, as the

  1126. words and lives of

  1127. everyday Christians

  1128. like us can be

  1129. used by God to

  1130. accomplish Jesus'

  1131. goal.

  1132. Because wonderfully,

  1133. our God is a

  1134. missionary God.

  1135. Let's pray to our

  1136. God briefly now.

  1137. Lord God, we thank

  1138. you that we have

  1139. good news.

  1140. We have good news

  1141. from you of Jesus,

  1142. the Savior for the

  1143. world.

  1144. Lord.
