  1. Father, we ask that you would continue to show mercy upon us and pour out the Holy Spirit upon us,

  2. those gathered here in person, those gathering online, those who might watch this later.

  3. We ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit would fall with might and power and deep conviction,

  4. that we might not only hear your word well, that we would also do and live your word well.

  5. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  6. Amen. Please be seated.

  7. So I don't know if you, where everybody is with Jesus, who are here, and those watching online, where everyone is with Jesus.

  8. But one of the things which Christians don't really like talking about, and if you're not a Christian, you might not realize that this is the case,

  9. is that Christians often struggle with disappointment with God.

  10. We Christians often struggle with disappointment with God.

  11. And in fact, Christians often struggle with disappointment with God's word.

  12. We have a problem in our lives, and we go to read God's word, and it doesn't seem to do anything at all for us.

  13. It doesn't seem to give us any insight.

  14. It doesn't seem to give us any particular peace.

  15. And so we become a bit cynical about God's word.

  16. Some of us will continue reading through our cynicism.

  17. Others will just quietly go from reading the word on a regular basis, being every day, to once a week, to once a month, to once every six months,

  18. to we can't remember the last time we read God's word.

  19. And now that George is saying this up front, we feel a tiny bit guilty.

  20. But the fact of the matter is, is that Christians struggle often, without being able to share it with anybody, with disappointment about God's word.

  21. It doesn't seem to speak to them at all.

  22. In fact, it's a very common problem that Christians in small groups would rather not study the Bible,

  23. but they'd rather study something that's more interesting and more helpful.

  24. We'd rather study something by C.S. Lewis or, you know, Kyle Strobel or something like that,

  25. because that just seems to be far more helpful than reading God's word.

  26. This is going to really come to the fore for us a bit with this passage that we're looking at today,

  27. because the passage is talking about, on one level, a very, very, very contemporary problem,

  28. which is the control of the tongue, control of your speech, and the problems that go along with it.

  29. I mean, we live in an age...

  30. I think last week I said a couple of things off the cuff, and I think I shared with you that's how Amy Van Hemmen,

  31. when she was her admin person in staff meetings, about every second staff meeting,

  32. she'd say in the middle of the staff meeting after I'd said something that,

  33. George, is why we're not allowing you to have a Twitter account.

  34. But we live in an age where people are hypercritical about speech in social media.

  35. So to hear that the Bible is going to talk about the tongue, the text that Shane just read,

  36. in fact, now you're maybe going back and saying,

  37. wow, he read that and nothing jumped out at me as being particularly helpful.

  38. And if that's the case, aha!

  39. We start to have a little bit of a window into the problem that we Christians have with God's word,

  40. and the disappointment we have with it, and the disappointment we have with God.

  41. So let's walk towards that issue.

  42. Let's look at the text again, and also at the same time,

  43. look a little bit at our disappointment with God.

  44. So it's James chapter 3, verses 1 to 12.

    James 3:1–12

  45. Those of you who are watching online, we preach through books of the Bible,

  46. and that means that sometimes we have to talk about things which aren't very popular culturally,

  47. that are very counterculture in terms of today.

  48. In fact, I'm going to have to make a very profoundly countercultural reference

  49. in the process of doing this sermon.

  50. But just sort of try to extend a little bit of grace to me as we do that.

  51. But we read through books of the Bible.

  52. We don't hide anything.

  53. Everything in the Bible was written as a book,

  54. and so the best way to understand it is to read it like a book,

  55. to go from the beginning to the end.

  56. And today we're at James chapter 3, verses 1 to 12.

    James 3:1–12

  57. And it goes with this.

  58. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,

  59. for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

  60. Now, I'm just going to pause here for this.

  61. First of all, I take that very seriously.

  62. But one of the things I'd ask is that if you would have kindness towards me

  63. and pray that every time I have to open the Word of God to teach and preach,

  64. that I would take it very seriously,

  65. that I will be judged with greater strictness.

  66. And pray not just for me, but for those who lead small groups

  67. when they look at the Bible or talk about the Bible.

  68. When our Sunday school, I mean Messiah Kids Sunday school,

  69. just in general, when anybody is opening the Word,

  70. pray that this text will come to them

  71. and they will understand their responsibility under God

  72. as they teach, as we teach, as I teach.

  73. And especially in me, because in our polity,

  74. I have, in a sense, like the top teacher role.

  75. That's partly in Anglican polity, how they understand who the rector is,

  76. is that I have the primary responsibility

  77. for handling the Word of God well.

  78. So please pray for me

  79. and that I will be able to do that very well.

  80. Maybe by the end of the service,

  81. you'll say, boy, George, I need to pray for you more.

  82. And if that's the only thing you get out of a sermon,

  83. then I guess that's not a bad thing,

  84. that you'll pray for me more,

  85. that I can handle the Word of God better.

  86. I'll just read that text again,

  87. and then we'll look at verse 2.

  88. Not many of you should become teachers,

  89. my brothers and sisters,

  90. for you know that we who teach

  91. will be judged with greater strictness.

  92. For we all stumble in many ways.

  93. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says,

  94. he is a perfect man, a perfect person,

  95. able also to bridle his whole body.

  96. And here body is being used as a sort of a metaphor

  97. for the whole person, including the physical.

  98. So it says something which is very, very true.

  99. The word stumble here means sin.

  100. And so every single person sins at some time or another

  101. in terms of how they speak.

  102. In fact, actually, it makes the interesting observation,

  103. and this is sort of a key to what's going to go on

  104. with the rest of his little teaching

  105. about the use of our tongue or the use of speech,

  106. is that in fact, if you ever met a person

  107. who had perfect control of their speech all the time

  108. and used speech perfectly all the time,

  109. that could only be possible if the individual was perfect.

  110. And so given that there are no perfect people,

  111. Jesus being an exception,

  112. that means we're all going to say things which are wrong.

  113. We're going to stumble in terms of how we speak.

  114. And now it's interesting.

  115. James then doesn't go on to say,

  116. therefore, make sure that your preacher

  117. or your pastor is kind with himself.

  118. Or therefore, don't be too hard on him

  119. if he makes a mistake.

  120. Or for me just to say to myself,

  121. well, you know, I said five or six really stupid things,

  122. two heretical things,

  123. but what the heck, everybody stumbles.

  124. So it could be that James introduces that.

  125. It would be a very Canadian way, actually,

  126. a certain type of branch of Canadian thinking

  127. for him to go from that.

  128. We're going to be judged with greater strictness,

  129. but let's be kind.

  130. In fact, if you think about that,

  131. it's a very common refrain in our culture.

  132. You have to learn to be kind to yourself,

  133. be kinder to yourself, be kind to yourself.

  134. It's a very, it's in a sense,

  135. how we would understand the normal wisdom of the world

  136. about how it is to handle speech.

  137. But James doesn't go in that direction.

  138. He takes it in a very, very different direction.

  139. But he doesn't take it actually

  140. in the direction that we want.

  141. We would like him after saying something like,

  142. be kind to yourself

  143. or be kind with the other person.

  144. And we'd want him then to maybe say,

  145. and by the way,

  146. here are three simple points to control your speech.

  147. And so if, in fact,

  148. the Bible went from these two verses

  149. to say that, you know,

  150. verse three is be kind,

  151. and then verse four, five, and six

  152. are verses about how to have better control of your tongue,

  153. we would all probably say,

  154. well, no wonder we really want to study the Bible.

  155. It's just, it's really practical, really helpful.

  156. It really touches me.

  157. It really makes me feel good.

  158. But in fact, the Bible doesn't do any of those things.

  159. It goes in a very different direction.

  160. And when we go to the very different direction,

  161. that we start to, if we're conscious of it,

  162. see our disappointment with God and with his word.

  163. So what happens next?

  164. Well, let's look at verse three.

  165. James goes on to say,

  166. if we put bits into the mouths of horses

  167. so that they obey us,

  168. we guide their whole bodies as well.

  169. Look at the ships also,

  170. though they are so large

  171. and are driven by strong winds.

  172. They are guided by a very small rudder,

  173. wherever the will of the pilot directs.

  174. Just sort of pause here before I keep reading.

  175. So he's just making a very sort of a simple,

  176. commonplace observation

  177. that in many cases,

  178. there are cases in the world

  179. that we just see naturally

  180. that a very, very, very tiny thing

  181. can control the big thing.

  182. He's just sort of drawing that to our attention

  183. with how you work with really big horses

  184. and how you work with big ships.

  185. The very small thing can, in fact,

  186. be very powerful in controlling the big thing.

  187. And then he continues on,

  188. and now his analogy starts to get

  189. a little bit more telling here,

  190. where in verse five he goes also,

  191. so also the tongue is a small member.

  192. And member here is saying,

  193. if you think about the body,

  194. the tongue is a pretty small part of the body.

  195. Yet it boasts of great things.

  196. In other words, we use our speech

  197. as if it is like the bit in the horse.

  198. It is like the rudder in the ship.

  199. And the tongue,

  200. our speech, it readily accepts

  201. that type of role of control,

  202. of presenting the person,

  203. of being able to master situations,

  204. of being able to have

  205. just a greater power in situations.

  206. We understand that, we grasp that.

  207. So he's going from, okay, you know,

  208. our speech, it's very common for us

  209. to boast of this,

  210. that our speech has this power in the world.

  211. And of course, obviously,

  212. the more powerful you are,

  213. the more powerful that you think

  214. your speech has,

  215. that the prime minister thinks

  216. his speech is going to have

  217. far greater control

  218. than maybe one of you.

  219. But we all,

  220. even in our smaller roles,

  221. think that speech is going to have

  222. that type of power.

  223. So in a sense,

  224. we're setting ourselves up

  225. to think a little bit

  226. about what actually happens

  227. with our speech,

  228. which is what he does

  229. very next breath.

  230. The second part of verse 5,

  231. how great a forest is set ablaze

  232. by such a small fire.

  233. And the tongue is a fire,

  234. a world of unrighteousness.

  235. The tongue is set among our members,

  236. staining the whole body,

  237. sitting on fire the entire course of life,

  238. and set on fire by hell.

  239. Now, a lot of us have a problem

  240. with a text like this.

  241. It seems to be a little bit extreme.

  242. But if you think about it for a second,

  243. it's actually not very extreme at all.

  244. If we were doing this

  245. in a retreat context,

  246. praise God,

  247. the day will come

  248. when we can crowd into a living room

  249. or go off to a retreat location

  250. and we can sit without masks

  251. and see each other's faces.

  252. But we go to some type of a retreat

  253. and I said,

  254. you're going to have three pieces of paper

  255. in front of you,

  256. you have a pen.

  257. You're going to have

  258. a little cardboard thing

  259. so nobody can see it.

  260. I want to assure you

  261. before we go into this exercise

  262. that nobody is to see

  263. what you're going to write.

  264. I'm not going to ask to see it.

  265. You're not going to be asked

  266. to show anybody.

  267. And at the end of it,

  268. we're going to,

  269. there's a fire here

  270. and we're going to all throw

  271. the pieces of paper in the fire.

  272. So you can just be completely

  273. as honest as you possibly can.

  274. And I said,

  275. so the first thing

  276. I'd like you to do

  277. is we're going to take five minutes.

  278. I'm going to set my timer

  279. and take five minutes

  280. and write down

  281. times in your life

  282. where somebody has said

  283. something to you

  284. that was very hard

  285. and cutting.

  286. Go.

  287. Now my guess is

  288. we'd fill that five minutes

  289. quite effortlessly.

  290. Like if I was to ask you that,

  291. every single one of us

  292. would be able to think

  293. of different times

  294. that people have said

  295. something to us

  296. that's been very hard

  297. and very, very cutting.

  298. We wouldn't have problems.

  299. We wouldn't have to think,

  300. gosh, I got to go back.

  301. Like I'm really old.

  302. Gosh, I got to go back

  303. till I was like four

  304. or something like that.

  305. No, you know,

  306. there'd be all sorts of times.

  307. In fact,

  308. you'd almost want to do this

  309. with a retreat context

  310. that there's going to be

  311. some prayers for healing

  312. and forgiveness afterwards

  313. because it could be triggering

  314. some of the terrible things

  315. that your husband,

  316. your wife,

  317. you know,

  318. your ex-husband,

  319. your ex-wife,

  320. you know,

  321. your neighbor,

  322. your boss,

  323. your teacher

  324. have said to you

  325. that still have power

  326. into your life

  327. even today.

  328. But then I said,

  329. we get over that.

  330. I said,

  331. now we're going to take

  332. five minutes

  333. and I'd just like you

  334. to write down

  335. things that you've said

  336. to other people

  337. that have really hurt them

  338. and you wish

  339. you could take them back.

  340. Once again,

  341. I'd got $100.

  342. None of us would have

  343. problems thinking it.

  344. In fact,

  345. the fact of the matter is

  346. is that if one of you

  347. had problems

  348. coming up with anything

  349. that you'd said wrong,

  350. what would all of the rest

  351. of us say?

  352. You are so self-absorbed

  353. and narcissistic

  354. that you don't ever recognize

  355. having said anything hard?

  356. Like it wouldn't be,

  357. none of us,

  358. not a single one of us

  359. would take it as a sign

  360. of holiness

  361. that a person can't think

  362. of things that they've said

  363. that have hurt another person.

  364. None of us.

  365. And I'm not even just saying

  366. us because we're,

  367. you know,

  368. Christians here.

  369. If you went to a local

  370. Tim Hortons,

  371. you went to a local

  372. Starbucks,

  373. a bridgehead,

  374. you went to a bar,

  375. a restaurant,

  376. you took your people

  377. at workplace

  378. and you said,

  379. we're going to do this exercise

  380. and there was this one person

  381. who couldn't think of

  382. a single thing

  383. that they could say

  384. that they'd ever hurt

  385. another person

  386. and everybody would go,

  387. oh gosh,

  388. boy,

  389. that person must be

  390. really narcissistic

  391. and self-absorbed.

  392. That's what we would all say.

  393. Why?

  394. Because we can all think

  395. of things that we've said.

  396. And that actually

  397. would even get worse.

  398. I said,

  399. okay,

  400. now we're in our third

  401. five-minute period

  402. and you have a third

  403. piece of paper.

  404. Okay,

  405. we've dealt with things

  406. that people have said to you,

  407. things that you have said

  408. to other people.

  409. I want you to write down

  410. things that you've said

  411. in the car

  412. or in your mind

  413. but not to the other person.

  414. Write it down

  415. on a piece of paper.

  416. Well,

  417. if you're at all

  418. self-aware

  419. and not self-absorbed

  420. and narcissistic,

  421. there'd be smoke

  422. in the room.

  423. I mean,

  424. unless you guys

  425. and gals

  426. are all vastly

  427. more holy than I am,

  428. which is probably

  429. the case in most cases,

  430. but even if you're holy,

  431. you'd have all sorts

  432. of things that you say

  433. in your mind

  434. about people,

  435. your boss,

  436. your wife,

  437. your husband,

  438. your best friend,

  439. your kids.

  440. So,

  441. if that's in fact

  442. the case,

  443. why is it that we have

  444. such a hard time

  445. with verse six

  446. and verse five?

  447. Listen to it again

  448. where it says,

  449. the second half

  450. of verse five,

  451. how great a forest

  452. is set ablaze

  453. by such a small fire.

  454. How many of us

  455. have trouble

  456. in our marriages,

  457. in fact,

  458. have had friendships

  459. or relationships break,

  460. have lost promotions,

  461. have had deep trouble

  462. in our lives

  463. because of something

  464. that we've said?

  465. How many of us

  466. have a hard time

  467. relating to maybe

  468. a father or a mother

  469. even today,

  470. even if it's just

  471. the memory of them

  472. because of something

  473. that they've said?

  474. Isn't that true?

  475. Verse six,

  476. and the tongue is a fire,

  477. a world of unrighteousness.

  478. In other words,

  479. it reveals to us

  480. things about ourselves

  481. which are deeply wrong.

  482. It stains the whole body

  483. and sets on fire

  484. the course of our life

  485. and actually,

  486. when I hear set on fire

  487. by hell,

  488. I'm not going to talk

  489. about the reality of hell

  490. but Christians,

  491. Orthodox Christians

  492. believe that hell exists.

  493. But the other thing

  494. which is just true

  495. about that,

  496. about all of this thing

  497. is this,

  498. that there is a profound

  499. mystery to evil,

  500. that there is something

  501. about evil

  502. which is irreducible,

  503. that if we once again

  504. we are not so self-absorbed

  505. that we can't be self-aware,

  506. that we are so addicted

  507. to narcissism,

  508. there are times

  509. in our life,

  510. I mean there's times

  511. in my life I might say,

  512. well you know,

  513. I said that bad thing

  514. to my wife,

  515. you know,

  516. but the fact is,

  517. you know,

  518. I was under a lot of stress,

  519. the fact of the matter is

  520. you'd said a couple of,

  521. you know,

  522. you said two or three things

  523. to me that,

  524. you know,

  525. sort of put me off,

  526. I'm tired,

  527. you know,

  528. I'm hangry,

  529. like,

  530. you know,

  531. I can come up with,

  532. but you know,

  533. the fact of the matter is

  534. there's some times

  535. where it just comes out.

  536. It just is there.

  537. You could tell a truth

  538. and the truth

  539. wouldn't even cost you anything,

  540. like the person

  541. might even be happy

  542. that you say the truth,

  543. but you say a lie.

  544. You could just make

  545. a compliment,

  546. it would be easy,

  547. but instead you make

  548. an insult

  549. and it's just there,

  550. it just springs out.

  551. You can't blame it

  552. on your upbringing,

  553. you can't blame it

  554. on anything,

  555. you can't give any type,

  556. it's just there.

  557. And so,

  558. all of a sudden

  559. we see that this

  560. which looks a little bit

  561. as if it's a bit extreme,

  562. is actually

  563. describing

  564. what we are like

  565. as human beings.

  566. And in fact,

  567. actually,

  568. remember I said

  569. at the beginning

  570. that one of the things,

  571. the wisdom of the world

  572. is that what we have to do

  573. is to be kind

  574. with ourselves,

  575. but the fact of the matter

  576. is that we see

  577. that if we understand

  578. what really goes on

  579. in our lives,

  580. that that's actually

  581. often very terrible advice.

  582. I mean,

  583. just imagine for a moment

  584. that if I had said

  585. something very,

  586. very,

  587. very cutting and bad,

  588. a couple of very,

  589. very cutting things

  590. to one of my daughters,

  591. and this still bothers them

  592. to this day,

  593. and then here I get up

  594. and I stand up

  595. on my hind legs

  596. and say,

  597. you know,

  598. sometimes I've said

  599. some things

  600. that are pretty hard,

  601. but I'm trying

  602. to be kind to myself.

  603. Well,

  604. the people

  605. who've been hurt

  606. by what I've said

  607. would say,

  608. no,

  609. no,

  610. no,

  611. time out.

  612. I don't want you

  613. to be kind

  614. to yourself.

  615. Like,

  616. own up to it.

  617. Like,

  618. I'm glad you have anxiety

  619. and are sleepless.

  620. Like,

  621. good.

  622. If you hear somebody

  623. saying racist things

  624. which are very,

  625. very helpful,

  626. and then you hear them say,

  627. by the way,

  628. I'm learning to be kind

  629. with myself,

  630. say,

  631. no,

  632. don't be kind

  633. with yourself.

  634. Like,

  635. what you need

  636. is repentance,

  637. like amendment

  638. of life,

  639. like taking responsibility

  640. for what you did.

  641. In some ways,

  642. what James is doing here

  643. before he continues,

  644. he's sitting a little bit

  645. of a puzzle

  646. and a riddle for us,

  647. a bit of a riddle

  648. about human experience.

  649. And the riddle

  650. of the human experience

  651. is that we both expect

  652. of ourselves

  653. and others

  654. is that they should

  655. always control

  656. their speech.

  657. Yet at the same time,

  658. he's sitting before us

  659. that we cannot

  660. control our speech

  661. all the time.

  662. And so,

  663. what's the third sentence there?

  664. I should control

  665. my speech all the time.

  666. I can't control

  667. my speech all the time.

  668. Therefore,

  669. maybe I should pretend

  670. that I'm holy

  671. and righteous

  672. and better than you.

  673. Maybe I should do,

  674. which is a lot

  675. of what goes on

  676. in our culture right now,

  677. which is,

  678. sorry,

  679. I almost said something.

  680. Thank you for whoever

  681. is praying for me right now.

  682. I almost said something

  683. that, you know,

  684. anyway,

  685. but a lot of times

  686. what we do

  687. is we get on the attack

  688. to make it look

  689. like we've arrived,

  690. but to hide

  691. our own problems.

  692. We attack,

  693. we attack,

  694. we attack

  695. and try to make

  696. other people feel guilty.

  697. Do we pretend

  698. that there's some,

  699. like,

  700. what do we do with that?

  701. And so,

  702. James is sitting before us

  703. a bit of a riddle,

  704. something to ponder.

  705. And then he goes on

  706. a little bit

  707. and he tries to make it

  708. a little bit deeper

  709. for us.

  710. Verse 7,

  711. for every kind

  712. of beast and bird

  713. of reptile

  714. and sea creature

  715. and just pause,

  716. it's going to be,

  717. for those of you

  718. who know your Bible

  719. very well,

  720. it's obvious here

  721. that James is making

  722. an allusion

  723. to Genesis chapter,

  724. the sixth day of creation.

  725. And he uses

  726. these four categories

  727. from the sixth day

  728. of creation

  729. and he's saying

  730. basically

  731. all of

  732. every animal,

  733. every creature,

  734. because he's taking

  735. the four categories

  736. that the book

  737. of Genesis

  738. and the sixth day

  739. of creation

  740. uses to talk about

  741. every type

  742. of creature,

  743. animal.

  744. And so,

  745. I'll read it again.

  746. For every kind

  747. of beast

  748. and bird

  749. of reptile

  750. and sea creature

  751. can be tamed

  752. and has been tamed

  753. by human beings.

  754. But no human being

  755. can tame the tongue.

  756. It is a restless evil

  757. full of deadly poison.

  758. Now, once again,

  759. it sounds a bit extreme,

  760. but there is something

  761. restlessness.

  762. There's a restlessness

  763. to our speech.

  764. That we,

  765. if we're at all

  766. self-aware,

  767. we know that there are times

  768. when we just say something,

  769. we exaggerate,

  770. we under things,

  771. we flatter

  772. when we know

  773. we're doing the wrong thing,

  774. we insult,

  775. we put down.

  776. There's something

  777. unstoppable

  778. and unsettled

  779. about our speech,

  780. even amongst

  781. the most controlled.

  782. And how is it?

  783. Like,

  784. if you think about it

  785. for a second,

  786. now this is like

  787. James,

  788. James,

  789. Jim,

  790. yes,

  791. but probably what

  792. Jesus called him,

  793. Jimmy,

  794. but James,

  795. he's setting this riddle.

  796. Like,

  797. why is it?

  798. Why is it

  799. that human beings

  800. can,

  801. in a sense,

  802. master or control

  803. every single type

  804. of animal

  805. in some way or another?

  806. I mean,

  807. whether it's through our,

  808. you know,

  809. not a particular individual,

  810. but human beings

  811. in general,

  812. doing something

  813. that makes an animal

  814. to go extinct

  815. or causes others

  816. to flourish

  817. or kills

  818. or poisons

  819. or whatever,

  820. but there's this

  821. general power

  822. that we have.

  823. But why is it

  824. that we can do that?

  825. Like,

  826. why is it

  827. that you can,

  828. you know,

  829. you can have somebody

  830. who can tame a,

  831. you know,

  832. a snake charmer

  833. or an elephant trainer

  834. or a dog

  835. or whatever.

  836. We can actually do that

  837. to ourselves

  838. with what we say.

  839. Like,

  840. why is that?

  841. How come that is?

  842. How come that is?

  843. But,

  844. by the way,

  845. what,

  846. what James is doing here,

  847. remember I said

  848. that this text

  849. reveals a little bit

  850. at first about

  851. our disappointment

  852. with God

  853. because what we want

  854. is we want something

  855. like be kind

  856. to yourselves,

  857. and then we want

  858. a couple of techniques

  859. about how to use

  860. our tongue better,

  861. but the fact of the matter

  862. is,

  863. is that what often

  864. happens with techniques

  865. is they don't,

  866. if you don't understand

  867. the way the world is,

  868. you can't provide wisdom.

  869. There's a fellow

  870. who comes to the clock

  871. and for many years

  872. he had a very,

  873. very high level job

  874. in the government

  875. and he was an expert

  876. on federal,

  877. the relationship

  878. of the federal government

  879. to the provinces.

  880. He had risen

  881. to the top

  882. of the Privy Council,

  883. a very high position

  884. in the Privy Council

  885. and he knew the history,

  886. he knew the laws

  887. and I'm sure

  888. that if one of you

  889. one day went and said,

  890. by the way,

  891. I figured out

  892. this wonderful thing

  893. with COVID and masks

  894. and this is my wisdom,

  895. they should do this

  896. and this and this and this

  897. and after one minute

  898. of you talking to him,

  899. he'd know that you

  900. have no idea

  901. about how provincial

  902. and interprovincial,

  903. you know,

  904. federal and interprovincial

  905. things work.

  906. Like you were

  907. as clueless

  908. as that door

  909. over there

  910. and the more you talk,

  911. the more he'd realize

  912. that you actually

  913. know nothing

  914. and so any advice

  915. you give

  916. is worse than useless

  917. because you're not

  918. talking about

  919. the real world.

  920. There are some of you

  921. here who are engineers

  922. and within your sphere

  923. of engineering,

  924. if I said,

  925. oh, you know,

  926. there's this technological

  927. problem and I figure

  928. out a way to solve it

  929. and then within 10 seconds

  930. they realize you don't

  931. know the vaguest thing

  932. in the world

  933. about that engineering

  934. problem

  935. and every extra

  936. five seconds of conversation

  937. just cements the depth

  938. of your ignorance.

  939. Your technique will not

  940. be of any use.

  941. You need often

  942. in self-help books

  943. which provide techniques.

  944. It does not emerge

  945. out of one

  946. who has thought

  947. about the nature

  948. of human beings.

  949. not always obviously.

  950. There can be

  951. some good advice

  952. that comes

  953. but often it comes

  954. out of a lack

  955. of awareness,

  956. a lack of real pondering

  957. the riddle

  958. and the mystery

  959. and the enigma

  960. of human beings

  961. in speech.

  962. And he's going to

  963. press into the mystery

  964. of what it means

  965. to be human

  966. and how we use speech

  967. in verses 9 and 10.

  968. Look at what he says.

  969. With it,

  970. this is our speech,

  971. we bless our Lord

  972. and Father

  973. and with it

  974. we curse people

  975. who are made

  976. in the likeness

  977. of God.

  978. From the same mouth

  979. come blessing

  980. and cursing.

  981. My brothers and sisters,

  982. these things

  983. ought not to be so.

  984. If this week

  985. one of you

  986. who's in a small group

  987. and I encourage you

  988. to be in small groups,

  989. if one of you

  990. is in a small group

  991. said,

  992. you know,

  993. so I just need

  994. to get something

  995. off my chest.

  996. No,

  997. so blessing God

  998. means that

  999. when you bless God

  1000. you get to know

  1001. who God is

  1002. in terms of

  1003. his attributes

  1004. and his excellencies

  1005. and his glory

  1006. and you're able

  1007. to express it

  1008. and give thanks

  1009. and gratitude

  1010. and in a sense

  1011. if you believe

  1012. that God

  1013. is the highest being

  1014. you're talking

  1015. about the very

  1016. highest things

  1017. and if you understand

  1018. cursing partially

  1019. as not necessarily

  1020. casting a spell

  1021. but as wishing,

  1022. doing something

  1023. so that the person

  1024. withers,

  1025. that they're diminished,

  1026. that they are shamed,

  1027. that if you understand

  1028. that that is what

  1029. cursing is,

  1030. if one of you

  1031. in a small group

  1032. this week

  1033. said,

  1034. you know,

  1035. I had this

  1036. really great time

  1037. of worship

  1038. on Sunday,

  1039. the scripture text,

  1040. the singing,

  1041. everything was just

  1042. so good

  1043. and yet,

  1044. you know,

  1045. I got home

  1046. and I just did

  1047. this to my wife.

  1048. I just said this

  1049. or I said this

  1050. to my kids

  1051. or I went out

  1052. for coffee

1053. or I saw my mom

  1054. or I talked

  1055. to my dad

1056. and I just did this.

  1057. You know what?

  1058. None of us

  1059. would be surprised.

  1060. Like every single

  1061. one of us

  1062. would say,

  1063. I've been there.

  1064. I've been there.

  1065. I've been there.

1066. And at a deeper level,

  1067. how is it

  1068. that the German people

  1069. could produce

  1070. Bach and Auschwitz?

  1071. How is it

  1072. that the German people

  1073. could produce

  1074. Bach and Mozart

  1075. and Auschwitz?

  1076. And we know

  1077. that this ought

  1078. not to be.

  1079. That in the world

  1080. of is and is

  1081. and is and is

  1082. that there's an ought

  1083. that's there,

  1084. that it ought

  1085. not to be.

1086. And then he brings it

  1087. to a bit of a close

  1088. before he moves

  1089. into other things

  1090. in verses 11 and 12.

  1091. And actually,

1092. what he does here now

  1093. is he said

  1094. because we all

  1095. understand,

  1096. look what he does,

  1097. it's a very,

  1098. very clever type

  1099. of thing

  1100. to try to communicate

  1101. how human beings

  1102. are both natural

  1103. and unnatural,

  1104. that we are both

  1105. glorious and monstrous,

  1106. that we are both

  1107. good and evil.

  1108. And now he's done

  1109. some of that things.

1110. He wants to bring home

1111. the fact that we are

1112. natural in the natural world

  1113. and yet there's something

  1114. profoundly unnatural

  1115. about human beings.

1116. How does he put it

  1117. in verses 11 and 12?

  1118. Does a spring

1119. pour forth from the same

  1120. opening both fresh

  1121. and salt water?

  1122. Can a fig tree,

  1123. my brothers or sisters,

  1124. bear olives?

  1125. Or a grapevine

  1126. produce figs?

1127. Neither can a salt pond

  1128. yield fresh water.

  1129. So why is it

  1130. that there's something

  1131. about human beings?

1132. We all know we're natural

  1133. and yet there's something

  1134. profoundly unnatural

  1135. about us.

  1136. In fact,

1137. if you could put up

  1138. the first point,

  1139. what James is doing

  1140. is saying,

  1141. a human being

  1142. is a riddle

  1143. wrapped in a mystery

  1144. inside an enigma.

1145. How can you be both

  1146. natural and unnatural,

  1147. good and evil,

  1148. glorious and monstrous?

  1149. A human being

  1150. is a riddle

  1151. wrapped in a mystery

  1152. inside an enigma.

  1153. That's a phrase

  1154. from Winston Churchill

  1155. used to describe Russia.

  1156. How can you be

  1157. both natural

  1158. and unnatural,

  1159. good and evil,

  1160. glorious and monstrous?

  1161. Now,

  1162. it's even harder

1163. for us in our day and age

1164. to try to get our minds

  1165. around this problem.

  1166. But,

  1167. you see,

1168. we wanted a few words

  1169. to easily calm

  1170. our conscience

  1171. in a couple of

  1172. simple techniques.

  1173. techniques.

  1174. But,

  1175. James

  1176. is saying,

  1177. under the

  1178. renewing power

  1179. of the Holy Spirit

  1180. and the Gospel,

  1181. I'd like you

  1182. to learn wisdom.

  1183. Like,

1184. wisdom for the real world

  1185. before you manage

  1186. techniques

  1187. for an unreal world.

  1188. So,

  1189. here I just ask

  1190. a little bit

  1191. of mercy for you.

  1192. I'm going to make

  1193. a reference

1194. to one of the two reasons

1195. why we have a lot

  1196. of trouble

  1197. trying to think

  1198. this through today.

  1199. And,

  1200. and,

  1201. and,

  1202. and,

  1203. and it's this.

  1204. I know that

1205. in a room like this,

  1206. there's at least

  1207. one person

  1208. who's had an abortion

  1209. or helped somebody

  1210. to have an abortion.

  1211. And,

  1212. amongst those

  1213. who are watching

  1214. this online,

  1215. there's almost

  1216. definitely some

  1217. who are watching

  1218. this that have

  1219. either had an abortion,

  1220. work in the abortion

  1221. industry,

  1222. enable,

  1223. have enabled

  1224. or argued

  1225. for abortions.

  1226. So,

  1227. I know that

  1228. in my reference

  1229. right here,

  1230. I'm doing something

  1231. which might evoke

  1232. anger and pain

  1233. within you.

  1234. And,

  1235. I actually thought

  1236. and prayed along

  1237. as to whether

1238. I was going to say this,

  1239. but I realized

1240. I needed to say it

  1241. because of the nature

  1242. of the text

  1243. and the nature

  1244. of the riddle

  1245. which the text

  1246. has set before us.

  1247. So,

1248. I just want to assure you

  1249. that I know

  1250. that many times

  1251. Christians talk

  1252. as if the church

  1253. gathered

  1254. is a rally

  1255. for the

  1256. anointed

  1257. and the righteous

  1258. to wage war

  1259. on an unholy

  1260. and unrighteous world.

  1261. And,

  1262. there have been

  1263. many churches

  1264. that talk

  1265. and act like that.

  1266. And,

1267. I want to tell you

  1268. that that is not

  1269. the biblical understanding

  1270. of the church

  1271. and hopefully

  1272. it will never be

  1273. the understanding

  1274. of church

  1275. and the Messiah.

  1276. The church

  1277. is a hospital

  1278. for sinners.

  1279. It is a hospital

  1280. for the sinful

  1281. and the broken.

  1282. There's a place

  1283. where beggars

  1284. come to get

  1285. free bread.

  1286. And,

  1287. that's what a church

  1288. is.

  1289. And,

  1290. so if there are

  1291. any here

  1292. or any who are

  1293. watching

  1294. who have had

  1295. an abortion

  1296. or have been

  1297. part of having

  1298. an abortion,

  1299. I just want to

  1300. assure you

  1301. that Jesus

  1302. loves you

  1303. and that the

  1304. way to move

  1305. forward is always

  1306. to come to him

  1307. first for grace

  1308. and mercy.

  1309. And,

  1310. if you want to

  1311. have conversations

  1312. with us about

  1313. that,

  1314. you will be

  1315. listened to

  1316. without any

  1317. judgment whatsoever,

  1318. only with love.

  1319. And,

  1320. that even the

  1321. hardest parts

  1322. of God's word

  1323. that confront

  1324. things in our

  1325. lives which are

  1326. very hard

  1327. is always so

  1328. that he will

  1329. connect with you

  1330. and that you

  1331. can know

  1332. as love

  1333. and mercy.

  1334. But,

  1335. I mention that

  1336. because what is

  1337. at the heart,

  1338. one of the things

  1339. which is at the

  1340. heart of abortion

  1341. is it separates

  1342. the human

  1343. from the person.

  1344. It separates

  1345. the human

  1346. from the person.

  1347. And,

  1348. when it separates

  1349. the human

  1350. from the person

  1351. and then the

  1352. person starts

  1353. to increasingly

  1354. become some

  1355. type of a

  1356. construct,

  1357. it makes it

  1358. hard for us

  1359. to think of

  1360. human beings

  1361. and who

  1362. human beings

  1363. are.

  1364. It's one of

  1365. the reasons

  1366. why,

  1367. flowing out

  1368. of the deep

  1369. hold of

  1370. abortion in

  1371. our country,

  1372. that we have

  1373. discussions as

  1374. to whether

  1375. robots can be

  1376. persons,

  1377. whether there

  1378. will be a

  1379. time that

  1380. artificial

  1381. intelligence

  1382. can move

  1383. to becoming

  1384. a person,

  1385. whether a

  1386. whale or a

  1387. dolphin or a

  1388. chimpanzee can

  1389. be a person

  1390. because we've

  1391. completely decoupled

  1392. separated being

  1393. human from

  1394. being a

  1395. person because

  1396. then what

  1397. happens in

  1398. the womb is

  1399. not of a

  1400. person but

  1401. just of some

  1402. physical stuff.

  1403. And that

  1404. makes it very

  1405. hard for us to

  1406. have any type

  1407. of wisdom about

  1408. thinking about

  1409. this.

  1410. The Bible

  1411. makes it very

  1412. clear that

  1413. every human

  1414. being,

  1415. every human

  1416. being is made

  1417. in the likeness

  1418. of God and

  1419. has inherent

  1420. worth and

  1421. dignity.

  1422. Every human

  1423. being, both

  1424. those in the

  1425. womb, the

  1426. most severely

  1427. handicapped,

  1428. the most

  1429. elderly, the

  1430. most diseased,

  1431. that we can go

  1432. to India and

  1433. go to the

  1434. most lowest

  1435. despised

  1436. classes and

  1437. castes and

  1438. say you are

  1439. a human being

  1440. made in the

  1441. likeness of

  1442. God.

  1443. And because you

  1444. are a human

  1445. being made in

  1446. the likeness of

  1447. God, you

  1448. have an

  1449. integrity and

  1450. a worth which

  1451. is not bestowed

  1452. by the powerful

  1453. or by the

  1454. state or by

  1455. religion or

  1456. by ideology

  1457. and cannot be

  1458. removed by

  1459. them but is

  1460. to be acknowledged

  1461. by the powerful

  1462. and is to be

  1463. acknowledged by

  1464. the state.

  1465. Your dignity

  1466. comes as a

  1467. human being

  1468. from being

  1469. made in the

  1470. likeness of

  1471. God.

  1472. And because

  1473. you are a

  1474. human being

  1475. made in the

  1476. likeness of

  1477. God, it

  1478. means that

  1479. there is

  1480. something which

  1481. is unique

  1482. about being

  1483. human.

  1484. We have

  1485. another problem

  1486. which flows

  1487. from the

  1488. naturalistic

  1489. understanding

  1490. of evolution

  1491. and if in

  1492. fact the

  1493. naturalistic

  1494. understanding

  1495. of evolution

  1496. as it moves

  1497. through society

  1498. and it moves

  1499. through the

  1500. culture, it

  1501. becomes harder

  1502. and harder

  1503. and harder

  1504. to understand

  1505. why there is

  1506. anything

  1507. specifically

  1508. unique about

  1509. human beings.

  1510. Why should we

  1511. value a human

  1512. being over a

  1513. dog?

  1514. Why should we

  1515. value a human

  1516. being over a

  1517. tree?

  1518. Why should we

  1519. value a human

  1520. being over a

  1521. plant or a

  1522. microbe?

  1523. Well there is

  1524. no reason

  1525. other than

  1526. our quest

  1527. for power.

  1528. But the

  1529. Bible says

  1530. the fundamental

  1531. insight of

  1532. every human

  1533. being that

  1534. there is

  1535. something unique

  1536. about being

  1537. a human

  1538. being.

  1539. That sense

  1540. is based

  1541. in reality.

  1542. Only the

  1543. Bible makes

  1544. clear that

  1545. human beings

  1546. are made

  1547. in the

  1548. likeness

  1549. of God.

  1550. And because

  1551. human beings

  1552. are made in

  1553. the likeness

  1554. of God

  1555. that is why

  1556. there is

  1557. something in

  1558. a sense both

  1559. natural and

  1560. unnatural about

  1561. us.

  1562. Why there is

  1563. something glorious

  1564. about us.

  1565. But of all

  1566. the created

  1567. things only

  1568. human beings

  1569. are made in

  1570. the image

  1571. and likeness

  1572. of the

  1573. triune God.

  1574. only human

  1575. beings.

  1576. In fact

  1577. if you could

  1578. put up the

  1579. next point

  1580. the biblical

  1581. gospel is

  1582. the only

  1583. key that

  1584. fits the

  1585. riddle

  1586. wrapped in

  1587. a mystery

  1588. inside the

  1589. enigma of

  1590. the human

  1591. condition.

  1592. The biblical

  1593. gospel is the

  1594. only key that

  1595. fits the

  1596. riddle

  1597. wrapped in

  1598. a mystery

  1599. inside the

  1600. enigma of

  1601. the human

  1602. condition

  1603. of your

  1604. human

  1605. condition

  1606. human

  1607. beings.

  1608. The biblical

  1609. narrative tells

  1610. us we're

  1611. made in the

  1612. likeness of

  1613. the triune

  1614. God.

  1615. Hence we

  1616. were made

  1617. to be social.

  1618. We were

  1619. made to be

  1620. communal.

  1621. We were

  1622. made to be

  1623. with other

  1624. people to

  1625. have our

  1626. faces show

  1627. and reflect

  1628. who we

  1629. are and

  1630. to hear

  1631. speech and

  1632. conversation

  1633. and to

  1634. grow together.

  1635. God made

  1636. us in

  1637. his likeness

  1638. so that we

  1639. would have a

  1640. special role

  1641. in the

  1642. created order

  1643. of being

  1644. fruitful and

  1645. multiplying

  1646. and caring

  1647. for the

  1648. world to

  1649. be the

  1650. gardeners

  1651. and sub

  1652. creators of

  1653. his created

  1654. order and

  1655. we used

  1656. our glory

  1657. our splendor

  1658. which was

  1659. made to

  1660. have a

  1661. relationship

  1662. with a

  1663. triune God

  1664. and to have

  1665. a relationship

  1666. with each

  1667. other and

  1668. we use

  1669. that to

  1670. turn from

  1671. God and

  1672. turn from

  1673. each other

  1674. in self

  1675. exaltation

  1676. and in so

  1677. doing that

  1678. we bent

  1679. ourselves

  1680. we broke

  1681. ourselves

  1682. we twisted

  1683. ourselves

  1684. the biblical

  1685. word is

  1686. we fell

  1687. and God

  1688. in his

  1689. mercy and

  1690. kindness

  1691. did not

  1692. erase us

  1693. or erase

  1694. his likeness

  1695. in us

  1696. and so that

  1697. every human

  1698. being is

  1699. both made

  1700. in the

  1701. likeness of

  1702. God and

  1703. there is

  1704. something about

  1705. us that is

  1706. glorious and

  1707. that can bless

  1708. God but at

  1709. the same time

  1710. there is

  1711. something in

  1712. every single

  1713. aspect of

  1714. what makes

  1715. us us

  1716. what makes

  1717. me me

  1718. and what

  1719. makes you

  1720. you that

  1721. is twisted

  1722. that has

  1723. been touched

  1724. by our

  1725. desire to

  1726. turn from

  1727. God and

  1728. turn from

  1729. others and

  1730. turn from

  1731. the created

  1732. order and

  1733. to live

  1734. an imaginary

  1735. life where

  1736. we are

  1737. exalted and

  1738. we are

  1739. great and

  1740. we are

  1741. powerful and

  1742. we can do

  1743. what we want

  1744. and we can

  1745. declare who

  1746. we are and

  1747. we can declare

  1748. the meaning

  1749. of our lives

  1750. and there is

  1751. something in

  1752. every human

  1753. being that

  1754. is monstrous

  1755. it is why

  1756. that on one

  1757. level statistically

  1758. speaking what

  1759. you see in

  1760. human beings

  1761. is that we

  1762. are completely

  1763. natural but

  1764. it is not

  1765. natural in

  1766. the sense of

  1767. what God

  1768. intended and

  1769. because he

  1770. never removed

  1771. his likeness

  1772. from us

  1773. we have

  1774. this deep

  1775. sense that

  1776. it is not

  1777. in fact the

  1778. way things

  1779. are supposed

  1780. to be

  1781. that there

  1782. is something

  1783. unnatural about

  1784. the naturalness

  1785. of human

  1786. beings

  1787. and that God

  1788. in his mercy

  1789. seeing our

  1790. problem

  1791. does what

  1792. only the

  1793. biblical gospel

  1794. can account

  1795. for

  1796. that God

  1797. would show

  1798. mercy

  1799. in a way

  1800. that can

  1801. touch every

  1802. human being

  1803. who is made

  1804. in the

  1805. likeness of

  1806. God

  1807. because you

  1808. see if

  1809. every human

  1810. being is

  1811. made in

  1812. the likeness

  1813. of God

  1814. that means

  1815. that God

  1816. himself

  1817. God the

  1818. son of

  1819. God the

  1820. one in

  1821. whose likeness

  1822. we are

  1823. made

  1824. that he

  1825. could both

  1826. remaining

  1827. the God

  1828. himself

  1829. could take

  1830. into himself

  1831. our nature

  1832. as being in

  1833. his likeness

  1834. and that he

  1835. then could live

  1836. the life of

  1837. unbroken

  1838. communion and

  1839. fellowship

  1840. with God

  1841. that we

  1842. could not

  1843. live

  1844. and that he

  1845. could die

  1846. on a cross

  1847. as a sacrifice

  1848. satisfying the

  1849. demands of

  1850. justice

  1851. and that he

  1852. could rise

  1853. from the

  1854. dead

  1855. burying in

  1856. himself in

  1857. his risen

  1858. resurrection

  1859. our human

  1860. nature

  1861. and that

  1862. because

  1863. every human

  1864. being is

  1865. made in

  1866. the likeness

  1867. of God

  1868. if the

  1869. God

  1870. in whose

  1871. likeness

  1872. we are

  1873. made

  1874. does something

  1875. it is

  1876. something

  1877. which is

  1878. potentially

  1879. available

  1880. for every

  1881. human

  1882. being

  1883. and only

  1884. the

  1885. biblical

  1886. gospel

  1887. can account

  1888. for that

  1889. and can

  1890. offer real

  1891. mercy

  1892. the way

  1893. that Jesus

  1894. is introduced

  1895. in the

  1896. gospels

  1897. is as

  1898. Emmanuel

  1899. God

  1900. with us

  1901. in the

  1902. midst of

  1903. our mess

  1904. and the

  1905. mess of

  1906. our life

  1907. only without

  1908. sin

  1909. to redeem

  1910. us

  1911. he

  1912. enters

  1913. the

  1914. mystery

  1915. of

  1916. what

  1917. it

  1918. means

  1919. to

  1920. be

  1921. human

  1922. that

  1923. we

  1924. might

  1925. enter

  1926. the

  1927. mystery

  1928. of

  1929. grace

  1930. and

  1931. redemption

  1932. at

  1933. great

  1934. cost

  1935. to

  1936. God

  1937. and that

  1938. we receive

  1939. this by

  1940. faith

  1941. if you

  1942. could put

  1943. the

  1944. last

  1945. point up

  1946. that would

  1947. be very

  1948. helpful

  1949. so

  1950. not only

  1951. has the

  1952. biblical

  1953. gospel

  1954. as the

  1955. only

  1956. key

  1957. that

  1958. fits

  1959. the

  1960. riddle

  1961. wrapped

  1962. in

  1963. a

  1964. mystery

  1965. inside

  1966. the

  1967. enigma

  1968. of

  1969. the

  1970. human

  1971. condition

  1972. the

  1973. biblical

  1974. gospel

  1975. provides

  1976. the

  1977. means

  1978. of

  1979. grace

  1980. for

  1981. humbly

  1982. pressing

  1983. on

  1984. remember

  1985. the

  1986. mystery

  1987. is

  1988. this

  1989. we

  1990. should

  1991. control

  1992. our

  1993. speech

  1994. we

  1995. can't

  1996. control

  1997. our

  1998. speech

  1999. therefore

  2000. well

  2001. we

  2002. should

  2003. despair

  2004. or

  2005. we

  2006. should

  2007. become

  2008. cynical

  2009. or

  2010. we

  2011. should

  2012. pretend

  2013. but

  2014. the

  2015. biblical

  2016. gospel

  2017. holds

  2018. us

  2019. if

  2020. we

  2021. are

  2022. in

  2023. the

  2024. security

  2025. of

  2026. mercy

  2027. we

  2028. are

  2029. in

  2030. the

  2031. security

  2032. of

  2033. mercy

  2034. we

  2035. have

  2036. the

  2037. grace

  2038. to

  2039. humbly

  2040. press

  2041. on

  2042. under

  2043. the

  2044. security

  2045. of

  2046. mercy

  2047. no

  2048. Christian

  2049. should

  2050. ever

  2051. start

  2052. to

  2053. say

  2054. you

  2055. know

  2056. what

  2057. I'm

  2058. going

  2059. to

  2060. stop

  2061. trying

  2062. to

  2063. care

  2064. about

  2065. my

  2066. speech

  2067. no

  2068. the

  2069. gospel

  2070. holds

  2071. us

  2072. never

  2073. surrender

  2074. to

  2075. cynicism

  2076. or

  2077. despair

  2078. always

  2079. press

  2080. on

  2081. towards

  2082. controlling

  2083. your

  2084. speech

  2085. ask

  2086. the

  2087. Lord

  2088. for

  2089. mercy

  2090. that

  2091. you

  2092. might

  2093. do

  2094. it

  2095. at

  2096. the

  2097. same

  2098. time

  2099. know

  2100. that

  2101. as

  2102. you

  2103. pursue

  2104. it

  2105. you

  2106. will

  2107. stumble

  2108. but

  2109. do

  2110. not

  2111. let

  2112. that

  2113. cause

  2114. you

  2115. despair

  2116. but

  2117. once

  2118. again

  2119. seek

  2120. out

  2121. the

  2122. Lord's

  2123. mercy

  2124. and

  2125. repent

  2126. and

  2127. be

  2128. reconciled

  2129. make

  2130. amends

  2131. secure

  2132. in the

  2133. mercy

  2134. and the

  2135. knowledge

  2136. that God

  2137. the Son

  2138. of God

  2139. knew all

  2140. of that

  2141. when he

  2142. died for

  2143. you

  2144. and that

  2145. your

  2146. relationship

  2147. with the

  2148. eternal

  2149. triune

  2150. God

  2151. is secure

  2152. not because

  2153. of what

  2154. you've

  2155. done

  2156. but because

  2157. of what

  2158. he has

  2159. done

  2160. so that

  2161. as the

  2162. gospel

  2163. grips you

  2164. you realize

  2165. that you

  2166. can walk

  2167. towards

  2168. forgiveness

  2169. you can

  2170. walk

  2171. towards

  2172. repentance

  2173. you can

  2174. walk

  2175. towards

  2176. amendment

  2177. of life

  2178. you can

  2179. walk

  2180. towards

  2181. reconciliation

  2182. you will

  2183. need to

  2184. do all

  2185. of that

  2186. why

  2187. because

  2188. until you

  2189. see Jesus

  2190. face to

  2191. face

  2192. you will

  2193. stumble

  2194. but the

  2195. means of

  2196. grace are

  2197. that you

  2198. will stumble

  2199. so call

  2200. out to the

  2201. Lord for

  2202. mercy and

  2203. know that

  2204. mercy allows

  2205. you to

  2206. say that

  2207. was wrong

  2208. that just

  2209. came out

  2210. of hell

  2211. that is

  2212. just wrong

  2213. Lord have

  2214. mercy help

  2215. me not to

  2216. do it

  2217. again

  2218. help me

  2219. to renounce

  2220. that at

  2221. the same

  2222. time help

  2223. me to

  2224. never

  2225. press on

  2226. and press

  2227. on to

  2228. press on

  2229. to become

  2230. more like

  2231. God has

  2232. intended you

  2233. friends if

  2234. you've never

  2235. given your

  2236. life to

  2237. Jesus there

  2238. is no

  2239. time better

  2240. than now

  2241. only the

  2242. Bible only

  2243. the biblical

  2244. gospel begins

  2245. to make clear

  2246. to you the

  2247. riddle the

  2248. enigma the

  2249. mystery of

  2250. your human

  2251. condition in

  2252. a way that

  2253. respects and

  2254. gives integrity

  2255. to who you

  2256. are only the

  2257. gospel provides

  2258. the way for

  2259. you to be

  2260. made right

  2261. with God

  2262. and the

  2263. means of

  2264. grace for

  2265. you to

  2266. press on

  2267. and to

  2268. know life

  2269. please stand

  2270. bow our

  2271. heads in

  2272. prayer

  2273. father we

  2274. thank you so

  2275. much that when

  2276. we gather

  2277. together as

  2278. your people on

  2279. a Sunday

  2280. morning

  2281. we're in our

  2282. small groups

  2283. we're in our

  2284. mentoring

  2285. relationships

  2286. that father

  2287. we are not

  2288. coming together

  2289. as the

  2290. perfect the

  2291. anointed

  2292. the exalted

  2293. the ones who

  2294. are above other

  2295. human beings

  2296. that father you

  2297. want to have us

  2298. enter in ever

  2299. more deeply as

  2300. we're gripped by

  2301. the gospel ever

  2302. more deeply into

  2303. the mystery and

  2304. the riddle and

  2305. the enigma of

  2306. the human

  2307. situation and the

  2308. human condition

  2309. that we find

  2310. ourselves in

  2311. and we give

  2312. you thanks and

  2313. praise that your

  2314. son entered

  2315. into that in a

  2316. way to save us

  2317. and to redeem

  2318. us that we can

  2319. know by faith

  2320. receive by faith

  2321. and that he will

  2322. walk with us

  2323. and in us and

  2324. we will walk with

  2325. him and in him

  2326. as we press on

  2327. as we stand up

  2328. after we have

  2329. fallen and so

  2330. father we thank you

  2331. for that father

  2332. make us disciples

  2333. of Jesus who are

  2334. more and more

  2335. gripped by the

  2336. gospel that we

  2337. might learn to

  2338. speak and to

  2339. live for your

  2340. great glory and

  2341. for the good of

  2342. our husbands and

  2343. wives our friends

  2344. our children our

  2345. parents our

  2346. bosses our

  2347. co-workers those

  2348. who work underneath

  2349. us our neighbors

  2350. our friends and

  2351. the the passerby

  2352. that we come to

  2353. see father because

  2354. so gripped by the

  2355. gospel that we

  2356. might forward

  2357. move forward

  2358. repenting as we

  2359. need but pressing

  2360. on and pressing on

  2361. to speak words of

  2362. blessing not

  2363. cursing speak

  2364. words of truth

  2365. and not lie

  2366. words of justice

  2367. and goodness not

  2368. injustice and evil

  2369. words of mercy

  2370. rather than vengeance

  2371. words of forgiveness

  2372. rather than hatred

  2373. and all God's people

  2374. said amen
