  1. So perhaps if you have your Bible open, you can turn with me to Luke chapter 7,

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  2. from verse 18 to 35, a question and answer session with Jesus to help us to answer the

  3. question, is Jesus the one? Is he the promised Savior? Luke's gospel and the time of Jesus

  4. is like our world in the sense that there are many opinions and many ideas about Jesus.

  5. Even in our first seven chapters, we've seen some people recognize Jesus as Messiah and Son of God,

  6. whereas some people have called him a blasphemer and a false teacher.

  7. Some are following him as their master, some see him as a prophet. So who is Jesus?

  8. Is he, as some say, a bad man, or is he a good man? Is he just a good man, or is he the God man?

  9. And we come to Luke chapter 7, from verse 18 onwards, and I want us to imagine that we're

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  10. being invited to a sit-down interview. There seems to be a growing trend, doesn't there, of those

  11. behind-the-scenes interviews, where you get to know the person behind the celebrity. Well, here,

  12. we have this question-and-answer session with the Lord Jesus. There are three questions that are asked

  13. that give us a chance to hear Jesus' thoughts, Jesus' thoughts on his ministry, so we can think

  14. about how did Jesus live. A question that helps us to think about the identity of Jesus, what's so

  15. important about his coming, and a question that takes us to attitudes towards Jesus, so we can ask

  16. ourselves, what is the right response, and more than that, what is my response to Jesus? On a weekend

  17. when many are asking, you know, what kind of king and what kind of kingdom can we look forward to,

  18. when we've seen in the news that people have made their decision about how to respond to the

  19. coronation of the king, how do we respond to this king, the king of kings? And do we recognize that

  20. this is a choice with eternal significance? So let's think, first of all, about the ministry of

  21. Jesus. We find this in verses 18 to 23, and let's think about the question that comes, a question that

  22. comes from followers of John the Baptist in verse 19, are you the one who is to come, or should we expect

  23. someone else? Jesus, are you the promised saviour, or is there someone still coming? Isn't that a great

  24. question? Jesus, are you the one? Are you the saviour? Who are you? Maybe to help us to think about the

  25. question, we can just take a minute to think about, well, who is John the Baptist who's asking this

  26. question? So we've met him a few times in chapter 1, and we discover that he was chosen by God before he

  27. was ever born. He was chosen to be a prophet, to speak for God. Indeed, he had a particular job to be

  28. the messenger who would prepare for the Lord's coming. One verse to help us to remember that,

  29. this comes from the song of his father Zechariah, as John is born, and you, my child, will be called a

  30. prophet of the Most High, for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him.

  31. And then we meet John a number of years later in chapter 3, as he begins his public ministry.

  32. And we're told in chapter 3, verse 3, that John preaches a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness

  33. of sins. So he calls people to turn away from sin, to turn towards God, the sign of that to be baptism,

  34. to know forgiveness. And then he spoke to the crowds about a coming one, one who is far greater than him,

  35. one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. And then we also discover in John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  36. that John the Baptist is put in prison for speaking against the king, and he's still in prison now,

  37. so he can't come personally. So he sends some followers to ask the question of Jesus,

  38. are you the one? And we need to ask ourselves the question, what's going on when John wants that

  39. question to be asked? He has so powerfully and publicly spoken about Jesus as the one, so what's

  40. going on? I think the likely answer to this is that John the Baptist's patience has failed in some way.

  41. Remember John said he'll baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He was expecting, I think,

  42. for Jesus to come and bring decisive judgment, to get rid of his enemies, to establish his kingdom

  43. now. You know, the disciples had those same thoughts as well, as we read the Gospels. For John the Baptist,

  44. he was expecting the kingdom to come differently and to look differently, and so he wants to check

  45. in and to ask the question, Jesus, are you the one? Now we need to think about Jesus' answer

  46. and what Jesus' answer tells us about his ministry. So look at verse 21. At that very time, the very time

  47. that he's been asked the question, Jesus cured many who had diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits,

  48. and gave sight to many who are blind. What do we see here? We see that God's kingdom is coming,

  49. but it comes by mercy and not by the might of an army. We see that Jesus is the promised one,

  50. but he comes first as a compassionate Savior, one who brings good news of grace to the needy and the poor.

  51. Yes, he will come as judge, but here he comes first as Savior, and he invites the followers of John,

  52. and he invites us to recognize that the miracles he performs are proof that he is the promised Savior.

  53. As Jesus acts both with the power of God and the grace of God in order to transform people's lives,

  54. doing the work only God could do, whether that's dealing with blindness or disability of any kind,

  55. means the healing of infectious diseases. He is showing that he is God, and he is the God of mercy.

  56. And so he points them to the miracles, but he does more than that.

  57. He invites John and his listeners, and us as well, to think back, to think back to Old Testament promises.

  58. Jesus will fulfill those promises as proof. Because then in verse 22, he replied to the messengers,

  59. go back and report to John what you have seen and heard, the blind receive sight, and so on,

  60. and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Why did we read Isaiah 35 this morning?

  61. Isaiah chapter 35 anticipates this great day when God's promised one would bring salvation,

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  62. when the glory of God would be revealed, when the Lord himself would come to save.

  63. And these are the signs. These things that John, that Jesus is doing, these are the signs

  64. that God promised his Savior would perform. He has come to establish this highway of holiness,

  65. to lead his people back to God and to eternal life. And so Jesus is saying,

  66. I am the fulfillment of the great hopes of the Old Testament. And because of that,

  67. he is good news to the poor, the great hope of God's Word, the great hope for people.

  68. We find it in the ministry of Jesus, the Savior. And so he sends the messengers away in verse 23,

  69. saying, blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me. You are blessed if you don't fall

  70. off this tree, if you don't fall into a trap, but if you recognize that in Jesus, God's King is here,

  71. and he's establishing his kingdom of mercy and grace for his blessing.

  72. So in the spotlight, in this Q&A session with Jesus, is how did Jesus live? We often think,

  73. and we should often think, about how did Jesus die and why did Jesus die? But it's good for us to

  74. think about how did Jesus live? Because isn't it beautiful to see our Savior as he cared for ordinary

  75. people? Indeed, as he came like an ordinary person, didn't he? Born to a poor family,

  76. growing up in a small, unimportant time, working as a carpenter, didn't come with the robes of pomp

  77. and ceremony. He cared for and came as an ordinary person. And he loved, didn't he? He loved those

  78. the world often hated and ignored. So in Luke's gospel, we've seen him welcome tax collectors.

  79. We've seen him reach out and touch the despised leper. We've seen him honor the faith of an enemy

  80. centurion. We've seen him. We've seen him. We've seen him. We've seen him wait for his blessing.

  81. And all the way along, as you watch the life of Jesus, you see grace and mercy shown to the

  82. undeserving, teaching us that his kingdom doesn't come. We don't enter the kingdom because we are worth it.

  83. We come as we recognize, like the centurion last week, that we are not worthy,

  84. but that God is full of grace and love. And as we think about the way Jesus lived, we can understand

  85. that his love is revolutionary. It was utterly different and unique. It wasn't the way of the

  86. Jewish leaders, and it certainly wasn't the way of first century Rome. The pattern of the society

  87. around Jesus was that people who are powerful, they would use power selfishly. Perhaps we recognize

  88. that. The people that would get help would get help only if it was of benefit to me.

  89. And the message was you cared for your own, you kept a distance, or you even hated your enemy.

  90. But what have we seen from Jesus? We have seen and heard him say, love your enemy.

  91. We have seen and we have heard him speak of mercy to the least. We will see Jesus meet hatred with love.

  92. We will see in Jesus a Savior who saves by self-giving, loving sacrifice.

  93. We see the compassionate love of Jesus in the way that he lived.

  94. I read an article this week with a title that captured my attention. It said,

  95. Western society is Christ haunted. And what the author meant by that is that the values of Jesus

  96. are still with us in 21st century Scotland, even as so many people don't recognize Jesus is Lord.

  97. So the ideas and the values in our society that we take as common sense are only common sense,

  98. because Jesus has transformed the whole way that we look at the world.

  99. I was walking past the quarter mile this week, and for the first time, walking past the old,

  100. the hospital there in the quarter mile, I saw an inscription on the side of the wall.

  101. It's straight out of Matthew 25. I was sick, and ye visited me.

  102. Why is it that Christians throughout history have built hospitals?

  103. Why is it that society believes in human rights for all people, and not just for the great and the good?

  104. Why is it that even when we struggle with our own economy, we still feel it is right to send

  105. international aid to countries that are struggling and suffering?

  106. Why do we believe that it is right to release slaves and to lift people out of poverty?

  107. These things are not instinctive and common sense.

  108. They're common sense only because Jesus has transformed the way the world thinks.

  109. Compassion, equality, justice, these are the values of Jesus.

  110. And Christianity has shaped our world in thousands of wonderful ways,

  111. as the people of Jesus have sought to live like Jesus.

  112. And so even today, as so many people have no clue that Jesus is Lord,

  113. and they have no clue that Jesus has shaped our modern Western world.

  114. It still remains true.

  115. Dick Lucas, who was a minister down in London,

  116. he said this,

  117. God did not give Christianity a watertight case.

  118. He didn't send us a set of logical arguments.

  119. He gave us a watertight person.

  120. When we look at Jesus, don't we discover,

  121. here is one I can trust.

  122. Here is one who loves and who saves.

  123. And so we are invited to consider Jesus

  124. and to come to Jesus,

  125. to receive and to recognize in him

  126. there is a unique compassion

  127. and goodness

  128. and love

  129. and grace

  130. that we see in his way of life

  131. and

  132. in the way of his death

  133. as he dies on the cross.

  134. Even there he is transforming.

  135. The cross, of course,

  136. was a symbol of Roman power,

  137. a way for Rome to humiliate enemies.

  138. Now that's not how people see the cross anymore, is it?

  139. We think about the cross as a symbol of love,

  140. of sacrificial love,

  141. as God's demonstration of saving love,

  142. pouring out grace,

  143. giving us forgiveness.

  144. So in the ministry of Jesus

  145. and in the sacrifice of Jesus,

  146. we have good news.

  147. Good news when we recognize

  148. that we are spiritually poor,

  149. that we by ourselves

  150. are unable to deal with our guilt

  151. and our shame,

  152. that we are unable

  153. to earn our way

  154. into God's kingdom.

  155. There is good news to recognize

  156. Jesus,

  157. our compassionate Lord,

  158. has completed

  159. the work.

  160. And so the gospel of Jesus

  161. continues to be

  162. good news to the poor.

  163. Now let's move from the ministry of Jesus

  164. to think about

  165. the identity of Jesus.

  166. As you look here at verses 24 to 28,

  167. the next question

  168. in this Q&A

  169. is a question that Jesus himself

  170. asks.

  171. Verse 24,

  172. Jesus began to speak to the crowd

  173. about,

  174. John,

  175. what did you go out

  176. into the wilderness

  177. to see?

  178. By which he's

  179. inviting the crowds

  180. and us

  181. to ask the question,

  182. who is John?

  183. And why does it matter?

  184. And I want us to see

  185. that to understand

  186. John and his ministry

  187. allows us to learn

  188. more about Jesus

  189. and his identity

  190. and ministry.

  191. Jesus, of course,

  192. answers the question,

  193. who is John?

  194. What did you go out to see?

  195. In verse 26,

  196. what did you go out to see?

  197. A prophet.

  198. Yes, I tell you,

  199. and more than a prophet.

  200. You went out to see

  201. a man of strength

  202. and courage

  203. in his convictions,

  204. in his words.

  205. He wasn't like a reed

  206. swaying in the wind.

  207. You went out to see

  208. a man who lived

  209. as a prophet.

  210. He wasn't known

  211. for luxury

  212. as he enjoyed

  213. his desert experience.

  214. He looks and sounds

  215. like an Old Testament prophet.

  216. So why does Jesus say

  217. you went out to see

  218. more than a prophet?

  219. He explains.

  220. It goes back

  221. to John's calling.

  222. Verse 27,

  223. this is the one

  224. about whom it is written,

  225. I will send

  226. my messenger ahead of you

  227. who will prepare

  228. your way

  229. before you.

  230. So just as

  231. Malachi

  232. in the Old Testament

  233. anticipated,

  234. just as Zechariah

  235. in his song

  236. anticipated,

  237. John came

  238. to be the messenger

  239. preparing

  240. for the coming

  241. of the Lord.

  242. So the whole

  243. Old Testament

  244. is anticipating

  245. when will the

  246. Redeemer

  247. come?

  248. Some people speak

  249. about the Old Testament

  250. as the age of promise

  251. because it's all

  252. looking forward

  253. to when the Redeemer

  254. and King

  255. would come.

  256. Well,

  257. John is the last

  258. of the prophets

  259. in the age

  260. of promise

  261. because

  262. it's as if he gets

  263. to open the door

  264. and announce

  265. the King

  266. has come.

  267. Jesus,

  268. your Lord,

  269. is here.

  270. And that's

  271. the significance

  272. of verse 28.

  273. Jesus wants

  274. to give John

  275. great dignity.

  276. I tell you,

  277. among those born

  278. of women,

  279. there is no one

  280. greater than John,

  281. but he also wants

  282. to make plain

  283. that everybody

  284. after John

  285. enjoys a still

  286. greater privilege.

  287. privilege.

  288. See there he says,

  289. yet the one

  290. who is least

  291. in the kingdom

  292. of God

  293. is greater

  294. than he.

  295. John lived

  296. in the age

  297. of promise.

  298. Jesus says,

  299. for us who live

  300. in the age

  301. of fulfillment,

  302. there's something

  303. greater.

  304. There's greater

  305. privilege,

  306. and we're going

  307. to come back

  308. to that

  309. in a couple

  310. of minutes.

  311. But let's think,

  312. how does John

  313. help us

  314. to understand

  315. who Jesus

  316. says?

  317. So,

  318. Jesus says

  319. he prepares

  320. people for

  321. the coming

  322. of the Lord.

  323. So,

  324. Jesus is none

  325. other than

  326. God,

  327. who has

  328. become a man.

  329. Son of God

  330. enters into

  331. the world.

  332. And John

  333. is significant

  334. because he marks

  335. this change

  336. of era.

  337. Jesus can

  338. declare the

  339. kingdom of God

  340. has come.

  341. Why?

  342. Because Jesus

  343. is the king

  344. who's bringing

  345. in the kingdom.

  346. John the Baptist,

  347. when he saw

  348. Jesus,

  349. what did he say?

  350. He said,

  351. behold,

  352. he said,

  353. everybody look.

  354. Don't look at me,

  355. look at Jesus.

  356. Behold the Lamb

  357. of God

  358. who takes away

  359. the sin of the world.

  360. In the ministry

  361. of John,

  362. he was preparing

  363. us

  364. for Jesus,

  365. the Lord,

  366. the Son of God,

  367. to die a

  368. sacrificial day

  369. as the way

  370. for our sins

  371. to be dealt with.

  372. As he baptizes

  373. Jesus,

  374. what happens?

  375. There is that

  376. voice from heaven,

  377. you are my Son

  378. whom I love,

  379. with you I am

  380. well pleased.

  381. The ministry

  382. of Jesus

  383. bears witness

  384. to this reality

  385. that Jesus

  386. is God

  387. and Savior

  388. and the Father

  389. is delighted

  390. with him

  391. for carrying

  392. out his mission.

  393. And as

  394. Jesus'

  395. popularity

  396. grew,

  397. John is the

  398. one who said

  399. he must

  400. increase

  401. and I must

  402. decrease.

  403. Pointing people

  404. always

  405. to Jesus

  406. as the source

  407. of hope

  408. and salvation

  409. was John's

  410. calling.

  411. Let's come back

  412. to that idea,

  413. the least in the

  414. kingdom of God

  415. is greater.

  416. Before we move on,

  417. we need to

  418. think about this

  419. privilege that

  420. we enjoy.

  421. Three ways,

  422. I think,

  423. that we can

  424. think about

  425. our greater

  426. privilege.

  427. The first,

  428. in the sense

  429. that we know

  430. the whole

  431. story.

  432. John was

  433. preparing people

  434. for the ministry

  435. of Jesus.

  436. We have

  437. in the Bible

  438. the whole story,

  439. don't we,

  440. of Jesus'

  441. perfectly obedient

  442. life,

  443. of his completing

  444. the plan of

  445. God,

  446. in dying on

  447. the cross

  448. to save

  449. sinners.

  450. We have

  451. the victory

  452. of Jesus

  453. displayed to

  454. the world

  455. at the

  456. resurrection.

  457. We have

  458. the return

  459. to glory

  460. where Jesus

  461. has received

  462. his coronation

  463. in heaven

  464. as King

  465. of Kings

  466. and we've

  467. been told

  468. that he'll

  469. be coming

  470. again

  471. to take

  472. his people

  473. to be with

  474. him.

  475. So we

  476. have this

  477. privilege

  478. because of

  479. where we

  480. stand

  481. in our

  482. point in

  483. time in

  484. history

  485. that we

  486. can understand

  487. that God's

  488. plan to

  489. save his

  490. people,

  491. God's

  492. plan to

  493. live with

  494. his people

  495. comes to

  496. pass through

  497. Jesus.

  498. It's a

  499. great privilege.

  500. We're told

  501. that the

  502. Old Testament

  503. prophets,

  504. even the

  505. angels,

  506. longed to

  507. know what

  508. we can

  509. come to

  510. know in

  511. the Word

  512. of God

  513. and in

  514. the Gospel.

  515. I also

  516. want to

  517. think about

  518. the sacraments.

  519. Today of

  520. all days,

  521. it seems

  522. good for

  523. us to

  524. recognize the

  525. privilege that

  526. we have,

  527. that Jesus

  528. has given

  529. the church

  530. both baptism

  531. and the

  532. Lord's

  533. Supper.

  534. As two

  535. more ways

  536. that Jesus

  537. wants his

  538. church to

  539. hear good

  540. news,

  541. there is

  542. good news

  543. that in

  544. Jesus,

  545. God has

  546. made a

  547. way for

  548. our sin

  549. to be

  550. washed

  551. away,

  552. for us

  553. to be

  554. united to

  555. Christ.

  556. That as we

  557. share the

  558. Lord's

  559. Supper as

  560. God's

  561. people,

  562. we are

  563. being taught

  564. and reminded

  565. that God

  566. saves by

  567. grace through

  568. the sacrifice

  569. of the

  570. Lord Jesus

  571. and that

  572. through that

  573. sacrificial

  574. death and

  575. through the

  576. life that

  577. comes to

  578. us,

  579. we enjoy

  580. fellowship

  581. with our

  582. God,

  583. through

  584. Jesus,

  585. and with the

  586. work of the

  587. Holy Spirit.

  588. And that's the

  589. third privilege.

  590. Remember,

  591. John said

  592. that this

  593. coming one

  594. would baptize

  595. with the

  596. Holy Spirit

  597. and with

  598. fire.

  599. But what

  600. John

  601. promised,

  602. the coming

  603. of the

  604. Spirit,

  605. the sending

  606. of the

  607. Spirit,

  608. that reality

  609. belongs to

  610. us as the

  611. church.

  612. When we

  613. have faith

  614. in Jesus,

  615. we are

  616. united to

  617. Christ by

  618. the Spirit.

  619. That the

  620. Spirit of

  621. God takes

  622. up residence

  623. within us.

  624. that the

  625. power of

  626. the Spirit

  627. is at

  628. work in

  629. us,

  630. making us

  631. more like

  632. Jesus,

  633. causing us

  634. to want to

  635. glorify our

  636. God.

  637. And so we

  638. have these

  639. wonderful

  640. privileges

  641. because of

  642. where we

  643. stand in

  644. history,

  645. in the

  646. age of

  647. fulfillment.

  648. And as

  649. is often

  650. said,

  651. with much

  652. privilege comes

  653. much

  654. responsibility.

  655. John had

  656. a calling in

  657. his day,

  658. didn't he,

  659. to bear

  660. witness to

  661. Jesus as

  662. Lord.

  663. We, too,

  664. have that

  665. responsibility to

  666. bear witness to

  667. Jesus, the

  668. King of

  669. love and

  670. grace.

  671. We have this

  672. responsibility to

  673. encourage one

  674. another by

  675. sharing the

  676. hope of the

  677. gospel together.

  678. And we have

  679. this responsibility

  680. as we seek

  681. that others

  682. might come to

  683. know the

  684. goodness of

  685. Jesus for

  686. themselves.

  687. Let's think

  688. lastly about

  689. the attitudes

  690. to Jesus.

  691. we find in

  692. verses 29

  693. to 35.

  694. So we've

  695. sat in on

  696. this Q&A.

  697. Jesus has

  698. been revealing

  699. truth about

  700. his life and

  701. his ministry,

  702. his identity

  703. and his

  704. mission,

  705. but now

  706. the focus

  707. moves out

  708. into the

  709. world.

  710. We can

  711. say the

  712. focus moves

  713. towards our

  714. own hearts

  715. to consider

  716. attitudes and

  717. responses.

  718. there's a

  719. question in

  720. verse 31,

  721. to what

  722. then can

  723. I compare

  724. the people

  725. of this

  726. generation?

  727. What are

  728. they like?

  729. Let's

  730. personalize

  731. that.

  732. What am I

  733. like in

  734. my response

  735. to the

  736. ministry of

  737. Jesus, to

  738. the mission

  739. of Jesus?

  740. There are

  741. two options

  742. that are

  743. presented

  744. here.

  745. In verse

  746. 29, there's

  747. the way of

  748. the little

  749. people, all

  750. the people,

  751. even the tax

  752. collectors, or

  753. there's the

  754. way of the

  755. lawyers in

  756. verse 30.

  757. So let's

  758. think about

  759. verse 29,

  760. these little

  761. people, all

  762. the people,

  763. even the tax

  764. collectors, when

  765. they heard

  766. Jesus' words,

  767. acknowledged that

  768. God's way was

  769. right because

  770. they'd been

  771. baptized by

  772. John.

  773. So there is a

  774. group who

  775. receive John's

  776. baptism gratefully.

  777. They knew

  778. they were

  779. sinners.

  780. They knew

  781. they needed

  782. repentance and

  783. forgiveness.

  784. They were

  785. ready for

  786. John's

  787. ministry,

  788. they're

  789. ready to

  790. receive Jesus

  791. and his

  792. ministry and

  793. his message,

  794. to receive

  795. the good

  796. news that

  797. we are

  798. saved by

  799. grace,

  800. that good

  801. news comes

  802. to the

  803. poor and

  804. to the

  805. least.

  806. But then

  807. there's the

  808. lawyers.

  809. We're told

  810. in verse

  811. 30, they

  812. rejected God's

  813. purposes for

  814. themselves because

  815. they'd not been

  816. baptized by

  817. John.

  818. They rejected

  819. God's

  820. purpose.

  821. It's really

  822. significant that

  823. they ignored

  824. John and

  825. then ignored

  826. Jesus.

  827. This is a

  828. group of

  829. people who

  830. refused to

  831. admit that

  832. they needed

  833. to repent.

  834. We don't

  835. need John's

  836. baptism.

  837. We can be

  838. good enough

  839. by ourselves,

  840. thanks very

  841. much.

  842. This is a

  843. group that

  844. refused to

  845. accept Jesus

  846. as Lord and

  847. Savior,

  848. didn't see

  849. their needs.

  850. What of a

  851. Savior sent

  852. from heaven?

  853. To illustrate

  854. their attitude,

  855. there is this

  856. question then of

  857. who calls the

  858. tune in verses

  859. 31 and 32.

  860. Jesus paints a

  861. picture, a

  862. picture to

  863. show us

  864. Jewish leaders

  865. stubbornly

  866. rejecting God's

  867. message.

  868. And the

  869. picture is

  870. like a group

  871. of sulking

  872. kids.

  873. They won't

  874. play the way

  875. I say they

  876. should play,

  877. so we're not

  878. happy.

  879. They're not

  880. happy with

  881. John and

  882. they're not

  883. happy with

  884. Jesus.

  885. And the

  886. problem, they

  887. won't dance to

  888. their tune.

  889. The religious

  890. people, they

  891. disliked God's

  892. message as it

  893. came from

  894. John.

  895. They disliked

  896. God's message

  897. as it comes

  898. from Jesus.

  899. What did they

  900. say about

  901. John?

  902. John the

  903. Baptist came

  904. neither eating

  905. bread nor

  906. drinking wine.

  907. You say he

  908. is a demon.

  909. John is too

  910. extreme.

  911. He's too

  912. extreme in his

  913. desert living.

  914. He's too

  915. extreme in his

  916. ministry calling

  917. people to admit

  918. that we're guilty

  919. sinners, that we

  920. need to turn

  921. back to God.

  922. It's too

  923. extreme and so

  924. they reject it.

  925. Jesus'

  926. ministry was

  927. quite different.

  928. The Son of

  929. Man came

  930. eating and

  931. drinking and

  932. you say here's

  933. a gluttered

  934. and drunkard,

  935. a friend of

  936. tax collectors

  937. and sinners.

  938. What about

  939. Jesus?

  940. He's too

  941. extreme as

  942. well.

  943. Why?

  944. They love to

  945. keep themselves

  946. separate.

  947. We're better

  948. than them.

  949. We're on the

  950. right side.

  951. Jesus feasted.

  952. with those

  953. regarded as

  954. bad and

  955. sinful.

  956. Inviting people

  957. into the

  958. kingdom of

  959. God by

  960. grace, not

  961. by merit and

  962. law keeping.

  963. Jesus is too

  964. extreme.

  965. So John is

  966. rejected and

  967. Jesus is

  968. rejected.

  969. The purposes

  970. of God are

  971. rejected.

  972. The wisdom

  973. of God is

  974. rejected.

  975. Whenever we

  976. fail to

  977. receive this

  978. message from

  979. John that we

  980. need to turn

  981. away from sin,

  982. when we fail to

  983. receive the

  984. message of

  985. Jesus, that

  986. we need to

  987. be saved by

  988. him, by

  989. his grace.

  990. Jesus says in

  991. verse 35,

  992. wisdom is

  993. proved right by

  994. all her

  995. children.

  996. The wisdom of

  997. God and the

  998. ministry of

  999. John and

  1000. Jesus is seen

  1001. by those with

  1002. faith, but

  1003. not by all.

  1004. In this Q&A

  1005. session with

  1006. Jesus, we can

  1007. imagine Jesus

  1008. turning the

  1009. microphone out

  1010. from him to

  1011. us.

  1012. What are

  1013. you like

  1014. today?

  1015. What am I

  1016. like today?

  1017. What is my

  1018. attitude and

  1019. my response to

  1020. Jesus today, to

  1021. his ministry that

  1022. turned the world

  1023. upside down by

  1024. his amazing love

  1025. and grace and

  1026. kindness and

  1027. compassion, by

  1028. his refusal to

  1029. rule by force,

  1030. his refusal to

  1031. judge by merit

  1032. and achievement?

  1033. How do we

  1034. respond to the

  1035. identity of

  1036. Jesus, the

  1037. one who comes

  1038. as Lord and

  1039. Son of God, as

  1040. the appointed

  1041. Savior who

  1042. rescues people, as

  1043. the King who

  1044. dies on the

  1045. cross to save

  1046. sinners?

  1047. How do we

  1048. respond?

  1049. Jesus wants

  1050. the followers of

  1051. John to

  1052. understand.

  1053. He wants us to

  1054. understand.

  1055. He is the one

  1056. God promised.

  1057. He is the only

  1058. Savior.

  1059. And he calls

  1060. us today to

  1061. wisdom, to

  1062. receive him as

  1063. Lord by faith.

  1064. And he calls

  1065. us to worship,

  1066. to worship him

  1067. as the King of

  1068. love, the one

  1069. who loved us

  1070. and gave

  1071. himself for us.

  1072. I'm going to

  1073. pray in just a

  1074. moment, and

  1075. perhaps we can

  1076. get the junior

  1077. church in, and

  1078. then we will

  1079. move towards the

  1080. Lord's Supper.

  1081. Lord, we are

  1082. so thankful for

  1083. Luke's gospel as

  1084. an opportunity

  1085. for us to see

  1086. the love and

  1087. compassion of

  1088. Jesus, our

  1089. Lord and

  1090. Savior.

  1091. Thank you for

  1092. the care he

  1093. showed to the

  1094. weak and the

  1095. suffering and the

  1096. poor.

  1097. God, we

  1098. thank you for

  1099. the invitation

  1100. and the

  1101. welcome that

  1102. he extended to

  1103. those who were

  1104. rejected by

  1105. many, who

  1106. were ignored and

  1107. kept at a

  1108. distance.

  1109. Thank you for

  1110. the love of

  1111. Jesus that would

  1112. lead him to the

  1113. cross, to die

  1114. in the place of

  1115. sinners, to take

  1116. the punishment that

  1117. we deserve, to

  1118. give us his

  1119. perfect record of

  1120. righteousness, to

  1121. give us forgiveness

  1122. and eternal

  1123. life.

  1124. We thank you

  1125. that he truly is

  1126. the king who

  1127. came not to be

  1128. served but to

  1129. serve and to

1130. give his life as a

  1131. ransom for many.

  1132. Thank you that he

  1133. is the king who

  1134. gives gifts to

  1135. his people, and

  1136. especially we thank

1137. you for the gift of

  1138. forgiveness and

  1139. eternal life, for

  1140. the gift of your

  1141. spirit in our

  1142. life.

  1143. Lord, we pray that

  1144. our attitude to

  1145. Jesus would be

  1146. one of grateful

  1147. worship, as we

  1148. consider the love

  1149. that he would long

  1150. to show to each

  1151. one of us, the

  1152. saving love he

  1153. would give to us.

1154. Help us to trust in

  1155. him now and

  1156. always, and we

  1157. pray in Jesus'

  1158. name.

  1159. Amen.

  1160. Now we're just

  1161. going to wait a

  1162. little moment while

  1163. the boys and

  1164. girls come in from

  1165. their classes.
