  1. Please have a seat.

  2. Before we turn back to Isaiah 44,

  3. a quick reminder that we'll have a brief time of prayer

  4. about our community open day,

  5. our Buklu open day, Saturday the 3rd of June.

  6. So to pray for the workings of that,

  7. but also to pray for those who will be invited

  8. that God would use that.

  9. So a short time of prayer down here,

  10. pretty much straight after the service.

  11. For anyone who can give us a few minutes to pray,

  12. that'd be wonderful.

  13. So we're continuing to think about

  14. 10 things that God can't do.

  15. Today, from Isaiah 44,

  16. we're thinking about the truth that God can't be surprised.

  17. And to think about why that's good news.

  18. For us, of course, we can be surprised all the time.

  19. Sometimes those surprises are good surprises.

  20. We're walking down the street and we meet an old friend.

  21. We go to a restaurant and we experience some new food

  22. and it's good.

  23. We find ourselves with an unexpected job opportunity, perhaps.

  24. There are good surprises.

  25. There are bad surprises.

  26. You think your car is working well,

  27. you take it to the garage and you get a steep repair bill.

  28. You have the bad surprise of broken promises.

  29. Promises we break.

  30. Promises others make to us that get broken.

  31. Boys and girls, I wonder if you've ever had

  32. or been to a surprise birthday party.

  33. To me, that sounds like an absolute nightmare situation.

  34. Surprise birthday party.

  35. The first time I went to a surprise birthday party

  36. was my granny's when she turned 80.

  37. That was a very high-risk maneuver.

  38. Tell you what.

  39. See, when she walked into that hotel room

  40. full of her family and extended family,

  41. there was a moment where it looked like

  42. she might keel over with a shock.

  43. But it was a good surprise in the end.

  44. Why is it that we are surprised as people?

  45. Well, partly it's because we are time-bound.

  46. Because we don't know what's going to happen,

  47. we have uncertainty about our future.

  48. So, for example, the open day that we're planning for,

  49. we don't know who's going to show up.

  50. We don't know how things will go.

  51. And we are surprised because we have limited knowledge.

  52. Again, we have limited knowledge of the forces of nature.

  53. So, we don't know is it going to be a good day or a bad day weather-wise.

  54. We also have limited knowledge in terms of people's actions and attitudes

  55. as they impact on us.

  56. So, we find ourselves surprised.

  57. And we talk about everybody having perfect vision,

  58. 20-20 vision in hindsight.

  59. So, we can look back, maybe see and think,

  60. oh, if I'd have known that then,

  61. I would have done things differently.

  62. But we don't have a perfect 20-20 vision

  63. when it comes to the future.

  64. But, of course, that's so different for God

  65. because God can't be surprised.

  66. God is not time-bound.

  67. Rather, God is eternal.

  68. God was there before the universe was created.

  69. God was there before there was time.

  70. And everything then is 20-20 for God.

  71. He sees the future just as perfectly as He sees the present,

  72. as He sees the past.

  73. And, of course, as we thought about last week,

  74. God's knowledge is perfect.

  75. His knowledge is perfect over all the events

  76. that take place throughout this world.

  77. He has perfect knowledge of all people in this world.

  78. He knows the intentions that lie in every heart.

  79. He knows the outcome of every moment.

  80. God is not like us.

  81. And I hope we'll come to see that this is really good news.

  82. In Isaiah 44, that short section that we listened to,

  83. there were two messages that God delivers about Himself.

  84. And especially we're going to think about the fact

  85. that God can't be surprised is really good news

  86. when it comes to the promises that He made.

  87. You know, when it comes to us and promises,

  88. we have something of an uneasy relationship to them

  89. because sometimes we forget the promises that we make.

  90. Other times, despite our best intentions,

  91. we fail to keep those promises.

  92. Other forces take over.

  93. But in God, we have one who is never surprised,

  94. one for whom there are no rivals,

  95. there are no opposing forces,

  96. and so we have a God who will always keep His promises.

  97. So there is, in God, one who offers us comfort

  98. for all our days.

  99. So if you turn with me to Isaiah 44,

  100. these first five verses that we read,

  101. the first message we can summarize this way,

  102. your Creator keeps His promises.

  103. So this section, Isaiah 44,

  104. is part of a much wider section

  105. where Isaiah is bringing a message against the idols

  106. because the idols are powerless,

  107. but He's also bringing a message against the people of God

  108. who have turned away from wholehearted trust

  109. to begin to trust in idols.

  110. And God wants to remind them and us over and over again

  111. that God is the only Savior.

  112. Therefore, God is the one to be trusted in.

  113. But there's a wonderful message of hope as well,

  114. that despite the unfaithfulness that God's people have shown,

  115. there is mercy from God.

  116. Hope exists in God because of who God is.

  117. So, to look at verse 2,

  118. what do we discover about God?

  119. We discover God is Creator.

  120. This is what the Lord says,

  121. He who made you,

  122. who formed you in the womb,

  123. and who will help you.

  124. Now, last week we were in Psalm 139,

  125. and David was reflecting on the fact

  126. that God formed him in the womb of his mother.

  127. So it was a very personal reflection.

  128. But now here we're being reminded

  129. that God is the one who has formed His people Israel.

  130. God has given birth, as it were,

  131. to His people,

  132. and it's He who will help.

  133. He is the Creator.

  134. He's also the covenant Lord.

  135. Again, the language there.

  136. But now listen, in verse 1,

  137. Jacob, my servant Israel,

  138. whom I have chosen.

  139. The use of Jacob,

  140. a reminder that to Abraham and Isaac and to Jacob,

  141. to that family,

  142. God made covenant promises.

  143. Verse 2,

  144. this is what the Lord says,

  145. the personal covenant name of God.

  146. This is their personal God

  147. who is speaking.

  148. And it's this God,

  149. the one who chose them,

  150. the one who made them,

  151. is the one who will help them.

  152. Now, how will God help

  153. this people,

  154. this people,

  155. this people who had wandered away from Him?

  156. God will help

  157. because God will keep His promises.

  158. In verses 3 to 5,

  159. we have this wonderful picture

  160. of transformation of life

  161. that God brings.

  162. Let me read verse 3.

  163. For I will pour water

  164. on the thirsty land

  165. and streams on the dry ground.

  166. I will pour out my Spirit

  167. on your offspring

  168. and my blessing

  169. on your descendants.

  170. So we can think about

  171. a desert

  172. springing to life

  173. after the rains.

  174. We can think about

  175. our peace lilies

  176. being revived

  177. after a good watering.

  178. God turns to His people

  179. and says,

  180. I'm going to do

  181. that kind of transforming work

  182. in your hearts

  183. and your lives.

  184. That their sin,

  185. their stubborn hearts

  186. will be changed

  187. by God's grace.

  188. So towards the end

  189. of this chapter,

  190. chapter 44,

  191. verse 22,

  192. God says,

  193. I have swept away

  194. your offenses like a cloud,

  195. your sins like the morning mist,

  196. return to me

  197. for I have redeemed you.

  198. The stubborn wandering people

  199. are called to return

  200. and are promised forgiveness.

  201. And God says also

  202. He'll keep His promises

  203. in sending His Spirit.

  204. This is a great hope

  205. for the people of God,

  206. especially a hope

  207. for the new covenant.

  208. Looking forward to this time

  209. when the power

  210. and the presence of God

  211. would be with His people

  212. in a life-giving,

  213. life-transforming way.

  214. And God says,

  215. I will bring change.

  216. I will bring change

  217. to your offspring.

  218. I'll bring change

  219. to your descendants.

  220. Future promise

  221. by His gracious,

  222. redeeming love.

  223. And related to that,

  224. there's this sense

  225. of a new identity

  226. for the people

  227. in verse 5,

  228. so that some will say,

  229. I belong to the Lord.

  230. Others will call themselves

  231. by the name of Jacob still.

  232. Others will write

  233. on their hands

  234. the Lord's

  235. and will take the name Israel.

  236. Again,

  237. here's a picture

  238. of a heart

  239. that's transformed.

  240. Instead of wanting

  241. nothing to do

  242. with their Lord,

  243. they're glad to say,

  244. I belong to the Lord.

  245. That this is

  246. a restoration

  247. that's going to happen

  248. within Israel,

  249. but there's also

  250. this promise

  251. that beyond Israel,

  252. as God keeps

  253. His saving promises,

  254. people will be drawn

  255. to Him.

  256. So the Lord presents

  257. this hope

  258. for their future.

  259. You will not always

  260. live in exile

  261. far away

  262. from the promised land.

  263. You will not always

  264. be hard-hearted

  265. towards God.

  266. Instead,

  267. you'll be restored

  268. and you'll receive

  269. my Spirit

  270. and you'll belong

  271. to me once more.

  272. It's a great promise.

  273. And the question is,

  274. can this promise

  275. be trusted?

  276. And the answer,

  277. this promise

  278. can be trusted

  279. if God can be trusted,

  280. if He can be trusted

  281. to work

  282. and to save,

  283. if God can be trusted

  284. that nothing

  285. can throw His plans

  286. off course,

  287. then there is real

  288. and living hope

  289. for the people of God.

  290. You know,

  291. we can say to people,

  292. don't worry,

  293. things will get better,

  294. things won't always

  295. be like this,

  296. but so often

  297. we know

  298. that we lack

  299. the power

  300. and the knowledge

  301. to bring that guarantee.

  302. Is God like us

  303. or is He unlike us?

  304. Then becomes a question

  305. that really matters.

  306. If we are to entrust

  307. ourselves

  308. for our lives

  309. and for our salvation

  310. to God,

  311. then we need to know

  312. that He is a Creator

  313. who keeps His promises.

  314. That takes us

  315. towards message

  316. number two,

  317. intended to give hope

  318. to the people of God,

  319. verses six to eight,

  320. which we can summarize

  321. this way,

  322. your God and King

  323. knows the future.

  324. In these verses,

  325. we have the character

  326. of God

  327. and His greatness

  328. in contrast

  329. to the idols.

  330. One of the great themes

  331. of this larger section

  332. in Isaiah.

  333. And again,

  334. the purpose here

  335. is so that

  336. God's people

  337. might turn back

  338. to Him,

  339. so that God's people

  340. might live with trust

  341. in Him.

  342. So, it's a message

  343. that still is relevant

  344. for us today.

  345. What truths about God

  346. do we discover

  347. in here

  348. that would help us

  349. to trust Him?

  350. Well, notice

  351. all the language

  352. that speaks to us

  353. of God being powerful.

  354. Verse six,

  355. this is what the Lord says,

  356. Israel's king.

  357. Here is

  358. the one

  359. true ruler.

  360. This is what the Lord says,

  361. Israel's king

  362. and

  363. redeemer.

  364. They knew this

  365. in their history.

  366. God rescued them.

  367. God rescued them

  368. from slavery.

  369. God rescued them

  370. from their enemies.

  371. Their king

  372. and their redeemer

  373. is the Lord

  374. Almighty,

  375. the Lord of hosts,

  376. the Lord of heaven's

  377. armies.

  378. This powerful God

  379. is the God

  380. who says,

  381. I keep my promise.

  382. And their history,

  383. of course,

  384. as they look back,

  385. as we look back,

  386. gives us lots of evidence

  387. that God

  388. is all-powerful,

  389. that God

  390. is mighty

  391. to save,

  392. therefore,

  393. we can

  394. and we should

  395. trust Him.

  396. He's a powerful God.

  397. He's also

  398. the eternal God.

  399. See that there

  400. towards the end

  401. of verse six?

  402. I am the first

  403. and I

  404. am

  405. the last.

  406. This idea

  407. of the

  408. timelessness

  409. of God,

  410. the one who was there

  411. before creation,

  412. the one who will

  413. outlast

  414. creation,

  415. just as we have

  416. about Jesus

  417. in the book of Revelation,

  418. the Alpha

  419. and the Omega.

  420. And the God

  421. who is eternal

  422. is the God

  423. who sees

  424. all history

  425. perfectly

  426. in a single moment.

  427. He is all-powerful

  428. and He is all-wise,

  429. therefore,

  430. He is able

  431. with certainty

  432. to bring about

  433. His purposes

  434. and His promises.

  435. God is powerful

  436. and eternal.

  437. God is also

  438. unique.

  439. End of verse six.

  440. Apart from me,

  441. there is

  442. no

  443. God.

  444. End of verse eight.

  445. You are my witnesses.

  446. Is there any

  447. God besides me?

  448. No,

  449. there is no

  450. other rock.

  451. I know

  452. not one.

  453. There are no

  454. rivals

  455. to God's throne.

  456. He doesn't share

  457. His glory

  458. or His rule

  459. with anyone.

  460. Therefore,

  461. because He is

  462. supreme

  463. in majesty

  464. and glory

  465. and authority,

  466. no one can

  467. challenge Him,

  468. no one can

  469. shake His plans,

  470. no one can

  471. halt His

  472. purposes.

  473. This God

  474. can't be

  475. surprised.

  476. And this is the

  477. God who is

  478. good.

  479. This is the

  480. God who

  481. makes covenant

  482. promises.

  483. This is the

  484. God who

  485. saves.

  486. And so,

  487. He gives them

  488. some truths

  489. about God,

  490. about Himself,

  491. but then He

  492. also wants to

  493. draw attention

  494. to His

  495. uniqueness

  496. compared to

  497. the idols

  498. in a different

  499. way.

  500. So,

  501. we need to

  502. think about

  503. the test

  504. that God

  505. sets.

  506. We are in

  507. exam season

  508. in schools

  509. and universities

  510. and that's

  511. always a

  512. stressful time.

  513. Part of the

  514. stress,

  515. of course,

  516. is not knowing

  517. what's going to

  518. come up

  519. in an exam

  520. paper.

  521. That question,

  522. have I

  523. focused on

  524. the right

  525. topics?

  526. Imagine how

  527. different your

  528. study and exam

  529. experience would

  530. be if you

  531. knew the

  532. questions ahead

  533. of time.

  534. Look at the

  535. test that God

  536. sets.

  537. Verse 7,

  538. Who then is

  539. like me?

  540. Let him

  541. proclaim it.

  542. Let him

  543. declare and

  544. lay out

  545. before me

  546. what has

  547. happened since

  548. I established

  549. my ancient

  550. people and

  551. what is yet

  552. to come.

  553. Yes,

  554. let them

  555. foretell

  556. what will

  557. come.

  558. So,

  559. in this

  560. test that

  561. God sets,

  562. there is

  563. one topic.

  564. Who can

  565. declare the

  566. future?

  567. Who can

  568. bring the

  569. future to

  570. path?

  571. Taking

  572. this test,

  573. there is

  574. the one

  575. true and

  576. living God

  577. and there

  578. are the

  579. idols.

  580. So,

  581. God says

  582. to the

  583. idols,

  584. show me,

  585. give me

  586. evidence

  587. that you

  588. knew what

  589. was going

  590. to happen

  591. since the

  592. time I

  593. called my

  594. people to

  595. myself until

  596. now,

  597. and show me

  598. some evidence

  599. you can

  600. foretell the

  601. future.

  602. It's God's

  603. way of saying

  604. to us,

  605. of course,

  606. I do that.

  607. I've never

  608. been surprised,

  609. and I never

  610. will be

  611. surprised.

  612. That's why he

  613. says,

  614. Is there any

  615. God besides

  616. me?

  617. No,

  618. there is

  619. no other

  620. rock I

  621. know,

  622. not one.

  623. When it

  624. comes to

  625. knowing the

  626. past,

  627. the present,

  628. and the

  629. future perfectly,

  630. in this test

  631. that God

  632. sets,

  633. God gets

  634. a hundred

  635. percent,

  636. and the

  637. idols get

  638. zero.

  639. They have

  640. no power,

  641. therefore,

  642. they should

  643. not be

  644. trusted.

  645. But God

  646. can always

  647. be trusted.

  648. in the

  649. Old Testament,

  650. one of the

  651. tests of a

  652. prophet to

  653. assess,

  654. are they

  655. speaking for

  656. God or

  657. not,

  658. do their

  659. words come

  660. true?

  661. If they do,

  662. they're speaking

  663. for God.

  664. If not,

  665. they don't,

  666. because God

  667. can't lie,

  668. God can't

  669. be surprised.

  670. The Old

  671. Testament

  672. contains

  673. hundreds of

  674. predictions

  675. about future

  676. history,

  677. whether that's

  678. to do with

  679. individuals or

  680. nations.

  681. Not one of

  682. those has

  683. failed or

  684. will fail.

  685. So when he

  686. spoke to

  687. Abraham,

  688. made great

  689. promises,

  690. but said,

  691. before your

  692. descendants receive

  693. the land,

  694. they'll be

  695. imprisoned in

  696. Egypt for

  697. hundreds of

  698. years,

  699. and then

  700. they'll be

  701. released.

  702. Well,

  703. that happened.

  704. When God

  705. speaks to

  706. Jeremiah and

  707. says,

  708. here's the

  709. message for

  710. the people,

  711. Babylon is

  712. going to

  713. come and

  714. defeat the

  715. nation and

  716. make you

  717. slaves for

  718. 70 years,

  719. future

  720. prediction,

  721. that happened.

  722. When Isaiah

  723. in chapter

  724. 45 records

  725. this message

  726. from God

  727. that King

  728. Cyrus will

  729. be raised

  730. up to

  731. let the

  732. people go,

  733. to give

  734. freedom to

  735. the exiles,

  736. that happened.

  737. All the

  738. Old Testament

  739. predictions that

  740. we have about

  741. Jesus,

  742. Messiah,

  743. the detailed

  744. prophecies about

  745. his birthplace,

  746. about his life

  747. and ministry,

  748. about his death

  749. and resurrection,

  750. all come true.

  751. Our God

  752. can't be

  753. surprised,

  754. and his

  755. word and

  756. his character

  757. therefore can

  758. be perfectly

  759. trusted.

  760. And God

  761. sends Isaiah

  762. to the people

  763. in his day

  764. to show

  765. them that,

  766. to call

  767. them back

  768. to himself.

  769. And God

  770. would show

  771. us that,

  772. to show

  773. us his

  774. great character,

  775. his trustworthy

  776. character,

  777. that he cannot

  778. be surprised,

  779. that he is

  780. all-glorious,

  781. that we too

  782. would trust

  783. him.

  784. Let's

  785. think together

  786. about three

  787. ways this

  788. truth that

  789. God can't

  790. be surprised

  791. is good

  792. news.

  793. We're going

  794. to think,

  795. first of all,

  796. when it

  797. comes to

  798. salvation.

  799. A couple

  800. of fascinating

  801. texts,

  802. one from the

  803. Old Testament,

  804. one from

  805. the New.

  806. Think about

  807. the story

  808. of Joseph.

  809. Do we know

  810. about the

  811. story of

  812. Joseph?

  813. Genesis

  814. 37 to

  815. 50 give

  816. us the

  817. story of

  818. this brother

  819. who was

  820. sold into

  821. slavery by

  822. his jealous

  823. brothers,

  824. lands up in

  825. Egypt,

  826. becomes a

  827. prisoner in

  828. Egypt.

  829. But then,

  830. in the fullness

  831. of God's

  832. time,

  833. he is raised

  834. to be

  835. prime minister

  836. of that

  837. country,

  838. rescuing

  839. the nation,

  840. rescuing

  841. many nations,

  842. rescuing his

  843. family from

  844. famine,

  845. so that

  846. he can,

  847. so that

  848. God is

  849. shown to

  850. be faithful

  851. in his

  852. promises.

  853. But anyway,

  854. once Joseph's

  855. father dies,

  856. Joseph's

  857. remaining

  858. brothers are

  859. nervous.

  860. Is Joseph

  861. going to

  862. turn on

  863. us now

  864. that our

  865. dad isn't

  866. around?

  867. And we

  868. have that

  869. wonderful

  870. statement in

  871. Genesis 50,

  872. as Joseph

  873. reflects on

  874. the actions

  875. of his

  876. brothers all

  877. those years

  878. ago when

  879. they sold

  880. him into

  881. slavery.

  882. He said

  883. to them,

  884. you intended

  885. it for

  886. evil,

  887. but God

  888. intended it

  889. for good,

  890. for the

  891. saving of

  892. many lives.

  893. So he

  894. says to

  895. the

  896. brothers,

  897. you did

  898. what you

  899. wanted,

  900. you were

  901. free agents,

  902. and you

  903. did what

  904. was evil,

  905. but what

  906. does he

  907. say about

  908. God?

  909. God

  910. intended it

  911. for good.

  912. God

  913. stood behind

  914. and above

  915. their actions.

  916. This God

  917. who can't

  918. be surprised

  919. was able

  920. to turn

  921. that evil

  922. into good.

  923. That God

  924. in his

  925. wisdom

  926. brought

  927. salvation

  928. and kept

  929. his promise

  930. to Abraham's

  931. family.

  932. salvation.

  933. The fact

  934. that God

  935. can't be

  936. surprised

  937. is good

  938. news when

  939. it comes

  940. to salvation.

  941. When we

  942. think in

  943. the New

  944. Testament,

  945. we think

  946. about Jesus.

  947. We began

  948. our service

  949. with Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  950. chapter 2.

  951. What did

  952. we hear

  953. about there

  954. again?

  955. We heard

  956. about wicked

  957. men doing

  958. what they

  959. pleased in

  960. putting Jesus

  961. to death.

  962. But we

  963. also heard

  964. about God,

  965. that God

  966. had predetermined

  967. and planned

  968. the death

  969. of his

  970. son as

  971. God's

  972. way to

  973. save

  974. sinners.

  975. So again,

  976. we have

  977. ultimate

  978. evil turned

  979. to ultimate

  980. good by

  981. this God

  982. of all

  983. knowledge who

  984. can't be

  985. surprised to

  986. bring salvation

  987. for many

  988. lives.

  989. So we

  990. can trust

  991. God when

  992. it comes

  993. to God's

  994. saving plan

  995. to recognize

  996. that truly

  997. it is

  998. unstoppable.

  999. There is

  1000. no wickedness,

  1001. there is

  1002. no force

  1003. that will

  1004. derail

  1005. the saving

  1006. purposes

  1007. of God.

  1008. Joseph's

  1009. story,

  1010. not in

  1011. Jesus'

  1012. story,

  1013. not in

  1014. the story

  1015. of Jesus

  1016. building his

  1017. church in

  1018. the world.

  1019. We were

  1020. hearing recently,

  1021. weren't we,

  1022. about Iran.

  1023. And Iran

  1024. before the

  1025. Islamic

  1026. revolution of

  1027. the late

  1028. 70s

  1029. probably only

  1030. had hundreds

  1031. of believers.

  1032. But since

  1033. that revolution

  1034. and since

  1035. persecution,

  1036. those believers

  1037. now number in

  1038. the hundreds

  1039. of thousands

  1040. because God's

  1041. saving plan

  1042. is unstoppable.

  1043. And that's

  1044. also good

  1045. news when

  1046. it comes

  1047. to our

  1048. trust for

  1049. God's work

  1050. in our

  1051. lives.

  1052. Think about

  1053. Paul's message

  1054. to the

  1055. Philippians

  1056. where he

  1057. could write

  1058. in chapter

  1059. 1 and

  1060. verse 6

  1061. of his

  1062. letter,

  1063. being confident

  1064. of this,

  1065. that he

  1066. who began

  1067. a good

  1068. work in

  1069. you will

  1070. carry it

  1071. on to

  1072. completion.

  1073. God has

  1074. begun the

  1075. work of

  1076. salvation by

  1077. calling us

  1078. to put our

  1079. trust in

  1080. the Lord

  1081. Jesus.

  1082. And Paul

  1083. reminds us

  1084. that our

  1085. hope for

  1086. eternal

  1087. salvation

  1088. is sure

  1089. and steadfast

  1090. because it

  1091. rests with

  1092. our all-powerful,

  1093. all-wise

  1094. God.

  1095. So,

  1096. those who

  1097. are trusting

  1098. in the

  1099. Lord Jesus

  1100. can have

  1101. confidence

  1102. that nothing

  1103. can separate

  1104. us from the

  1105. love of God

  1106. that is in

  1107. Christ Jesus.

  1108. God can't

  1109. be surprised.

  1110. There are

  1111. no forces

  1112. that can

  1113. derail his

  1114. saving plan

  1115. for his

  1116. people.

  1117. That's good

  1118. news.

  1119. That God

  1120. can't be

  1121. surprised is

  1122. also good

  1123. news when

  1124. it comes

  1125. to security.

  1126. Again,

  1127. Israel is

  1128. being encouraged

  1129. to put

  1130. their trust

  1131. in God.

  1132. Israel,

  1133. like us,

  1134. lived in

  1135. changing

  1136. times.

  1137. There were

  1138. military

  1139. forces

  1140. always

  1141. maneuvering,

  1142. empires

  1143. always

  1144. looking to

  1145. conquer.

  1146. They were

  1147. a farming

  1148. society,

  1149. so there

  1150. was seasonal

  1151. changes and

  1152. fluctuations.

  1153. And one

  1154. of the

  1155. things you

  1156. discover in

  1157. Israel's

  1158. history is

  1159. that temptation

  1160. to turn to

  1161. idols as

  1162. an insurance

  1163. policy.

  1164. So they

  1165. would continue

  1166. to go to

  1167. the temple

  1168. and they

  1169. would continue

  1170. to offer

  1171. sacrifices to

  1172. God, but

  1173. they would

  1174. also offer

  1175. sacrifices to

  1176. the idols in

  1177. the hope that

  1178. perhaps they

  1179. would provide

  1180. peace or they

  1181. would provide

  1182. good crop.

  1183. those changes

  1184. and insecurity

  1185. led them

  1186. often away

  1187. from God.

  1188. Our world

  1189. looks different,

  1190. of course,

  1191. but we

  1192. recognize, too,

  1193. that threats

  1194. and uncertainty

  1195. are everywhere.

  1196. Whether people's

  1197. fears are

  1198. related to

  1199. climate,

  1200. whether it's

  1201. the growing

  1202. health care

  1203. crisis,

  1204. whether it's

  1205. fears about

  1206. an economy

  1207. and our

  1208. jobs,

  1209. it's easy

  1210. to be

  1211. fearful,

  1212. it's easy

  1213. to lose

  1214. hope.

  1215. And the

  1216. temptation

  1217. that we

  1218. face as

  1219. Christians

  1220. today may

  1221. be similar

  1222. to an

  1223. Old Testament

  1224. believer to

  1225. look to find

  1226. our insurance

  1227. policy in

  1228. something beyond

  1229. God also.

  1230. Find rest

  1231. my soul in

  1232. God alone

  1233. was the

  1234. message of

  1235. Psalm 62.

  1236. But can't

  1237. we be

  1238. tempted

  1239. to say,

  1240. well, I

  1241. feel like

  1242. if I can

  1243. just find a

  1244. good secure

  1245. job,

  1246. then there's

  1247. where I'll

  1248. find the

  1249. security I

  1250. need.

  1251. Or if I've

  1252. got a

  1253. healthy bank

  1254. account,

  1255. then I can

  1256. deal with

  1257. some of the

  1258. fluctuations

  1259. that are

  1260. happening and

  1261. I can feel

  1262. a sense of

  1263. security.

  1264. Or maybe if

  1265. I have a

  1266. strong family

  1267. or a network

  1268. around me,

  1269. then there's

  1270. where I'll

  1271. look to for

  1272. my security

  1273. instead of

  1274. finding rest

  1275. my soul

  1276. in God

  1277. alone.

  1278. We

  1279. recognize

  1280. that each

  1281. of those

  1282. are limited.

  1283. Every

  1284. created thing

  1285. is subject

  1286. to change

  1287. and can

  1288. be lost.

  1289. But our

  1290. God,

  1291. verse 8,

  1292. there is

  1293. no other

  1294. rock.

  1295. perfect sense

  1296. all those

  1297. hundreds of

  1298. years ago

  1299. when Edinburgh

  1300. Castle was

  1301. being built

  1302. that they

  1303. would situate

  1304. it on

  1305. Castle Rock.

  1306. There's a

  1307. strong place,

  1308. there's a

  1309. stable place,

  1310. there's a

  1311. place for

  1312. security.

  1313. It makes

  1314. sense for

  1315. us to

  1316. look to

  1317. our greatest

  1318. source of

  1319. security,

  1320. to trust

  1321. and to rest

  1322. in our

  1323. God,

  1324. the rock,

  1325. the one

  1326. who can't

  1327. be surprised,

  1328. the one

  1329. who knows

  1330. how the

  1331. story ends

  1332. and all

  1333. the uncertainty

  1334. of our

  1335. futures.

  1336. There is

  1337. one who

  1338. knows.

  1339. That's

  1340. God

  1341. himself.

  1342. He knows

  1343. how the

  1344. story of

  1345. salvation is

  1346. going to

  1347. end,

  1348. that there

  1349. is a

  1350. certainty

  1351. that Jesus

  1352. is going

  1353. to return

  1354. as king

  1355. and judge,

  1356. that Jesus

  1357. will establish

  1358. the new

  1359. heavens and

  1360. the new

  1361. earth,

  1362. that Jesus

  1363. will dwell

  1364. with his

  1365. people forever.

  1366. That's where

  1367. our certainty

  1368. and security

  1369. is to be

  1370. found.

  1371. That's why

  1372. we must

  1373. never forget

  1374. the future

  1375. promises of

  1376. the gospel,

  1377. that we

  1378. look back

  1379. with such

  1380. gratitude to

  1381. what Jesus

  1382. did on the

  1383. cross.

  1384. But we

  1385. also need

  1386. to look

  1387. forward,

  1388. always with

  1389. hope,

  1390. to what God

  1391. will do in

  1392. Jesus when

  1393. he comes

  1394. back again,

  1395. because those

  1396. promises are

  1397. rock solid.

  1398. Because our

  1399. God can't

  1400. be surprised,

  1401. his purposes

  1402. cannot be

  1403. derailed.

  1404. One last

  1405. thing about

  1406. how this

  1407. truth that

  1408. God can't

  1409. be surprised

  1410. is good

  1411. news.

  1412. It's good

  1413. news when

  1414. it comes

  1415. to our

  1416. service of

  1417. him.

  1418. In verse

  1419. 8,

  1420. we find

  1421. this,

  1422. do not

  1423. tremble,

  1424. do not

  1425. be afraid,

  1426. did I

  1427. not

  1428. proclaim

  1429. this

  1430. and

  1431. foretell

  1432. it long

  1433. ago,

  1434. you are

  1435. my

  1436. witnesses.

  1437. Is there

  1438. any God

  1439. besides me?

  1440. No,

  1441. there is

  1442. no other

  1443. rock.

  1444. God

  1445. calls his

  1446. people to

  1447. be his

  1448. witnesses,

  1449. to bear

  1450. witness to

  1451. the reality

  1452. that he

  1453. is that

  1454. unchanging

  1455. rock in

  1456. changing

  1457. time,

  1458. that he

  1459. is the

  1460. one who

  1461. has made

  1462. rock-solid

  1463. gospel

  1464. promises to

  1465. us in

  1466. the Lord

  1467. Jesus.

  1468. And so,

  1469. as Christians

  1470. and as a

  1471. church,

  1472. we are

  1473. invited to

  1474. live and

  1475. to speak

  1476. to show

  1477. that there

  1478. is a

  1479. place of

  1480. security,

  1481. that there

  1482. is living

  1483. hope,

  1484. even in

  1485. uncertain

  1486. times.

  1487. And to

  1488. recognize,

  1489. as we

  1490. seek to

  1491. live as

  1492. witnesses,

  1493. as we

  1494. go into

  1495. our

  1496. Monday

  1497. morning,

  1498. remember

  1499. that God

  1500. will not

  1501. be surprised

  1502. by any

  1503. situation we

  1504. find ourselves

  1505. in.

  1506. God will

  1507. not be

  1508. surprised

  1509. by any

  1510. conversation

  1511. we find

  1512. ourselves

  1513. having,

  1514. even if

  1515. we are,

  1516. and often

  1517. we are.

  1518. And in

  1519. those moments,

  1520. we can

  1521. trust his

  1522. promises,

  1523. because we

  1524. know he

  1525. doesn't

  1526. change,

  1527. and we

  1528. know he

  1529. can't be

  1530. surprised,

  1531. so we

  1532. can trust

  1533. his promise

  1534. to be

  1535. with us,

  1536. trust his

  1537. promise to

  1538. help us,

  1539. trust his

  1540. promise to

  1541. give us

  1542. the words

  1543. to speak

  1544. through the

  1545. Holy Spirit

  1546. just when we

  1547. need them.

  1548. So if we

  1549. find ourselves

  1550. surprised by

  1551. opportunities

  1552. this week,

  1553. we're

  1554. invited to

  1555. pray with

  1556. trust to

  1557. the God

  1558. who saw

  1559. that, to

  1560. the God

  1561. who planned

  1562. that, because

  1563. our God

  1564. can't be

  1565. surprised.

  1566. He is the

  1567. only rock,

  1568. he is the

  1569. king, he

  1570. is the

  1571. redeemer.

  1572. Let's pray

  1573. to our God

  1574. tonight.

  1575. Lord, our

  1576. God, we

  1577. thank you

  1578. for the

  1579. truths that

  1580. you give

  1581. us in

  1582. your word

  1583. that are

  1584. intended to

  1585. give us

  1586. confidence in

  1587. you and in

  1588. your character

  1589. and in your

  1590. word of

  1591. promise.

  1592. We thank

  1593. you that

  1594. you give

  1595. us these

  1596. images of

  1597. strength and

  1598. of life

  1599. to show

  1600. to us

  1601. that security

  1602. and salvation

  1603. come from

  1604. you and

  1605. from you

  1606. alone.

  1607. Again, we

  1608. confess our

  1609. temptation and

  1610. tendency to

  1611. look to

  1612. other things

  1613. apart from

  1614. you to

  1615. find our

  1616. source of

  1617. security and

  1618. hope.

  1619. May you

  1620. cause us

  1621. to find

  1622. rest in

  1623. God alone.

  1624. May we

  1625. increasingly

  1626. understand

  1627. the hope

  1628. that we

  1629. have

  1630. from trusting

  1631. in a

  1632. God who

  1633. sees and

  1634. knows all

  1635. things,

  1636. that you

  1637. are able

  1638. to guide

  1639. us and

  1640. to keep

  1641. us and

  1642. to help

  1643. us,

  1644. that all

  1645. of your

  1646. promises are

  1647. yes and

  1648. amen in

  1649. Jesus,

  1650. that not

  1651. one of the

  1652. precious

  1653. promises we

  1654. find in

  1655. your word

  1656. will ever

  1657. fail.

  1658. So, Lord,

  1659. as we go

  1660. into this

  1661. new week,

  1662. we thank

  1663. you that

  1664. while we

  1665. don't know

  1666. what's

  1667. going to

  1668. happen,

  1669. although we

  1670. make plans,

  1671. you know

  1672. exactly what

  1673. will happen.

  1674. Help us to

  1675. trust in

  1676. you, help

  1677. us to

  1678. call on

  1679. you, help

  1680. us to

  1681. worship you,

  1682. we pray.

  1683. In Jesus'

  1684. name, amen.

  1685. now let's

  1686. close singing

  1687. the hymn

  1688. Christ the

  1689. Sure and

  1690. Steady Anchor

  1691. to remind

  1692. us of the

  1693. basis of

  1694. our confident

  1695. trust and

  1696. let's stand

  1697. as we sing

  1698. together.

  1699. together.
