  1. The scripture reading comes from the book of Matthew chapter 11 and 12.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the bulletin or your own Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 28 we read,

  4. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  5. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  6. and you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  7. At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath.

  8. His disciples were hungry and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.

  9. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him,

  10. Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.

  11. He said to them,

  12. Have you not read what David did when he was hungry and those who were with him?

  13. How he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the presence,

  14. which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him,

  15. but only for the priests?

  16. Or have you not read in the law how on the Sabbath

  17. the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless?

  18. I tell you, something greater than the temple is here,

  19. and if you had known what this means,

  20. I desire mercy and not sacrifice,

  21. you would not have condemned the guiltless,

  22. for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

  23. This is the Word of God.

  24. Great. Thank you, Celeste.

  25. Let's see if I can sort this out.

  26. Okay, good morning, everyone.

  27. Great. Good to see so many of you.

  28. And it's great to be back in Matthew's Gospel.

  29. I don't know if you realize this,

  30. but we started Matthew's Gospel three years ago,

  31. and then we took a long break,

  32. and we picked it up again earlier this year,

  33. and then we took some more breaks,

  34. and we're back in Matthew's Gospel,

  35. and we're going to just keep on working through it.

  36. And it might take us five years,

  37. but it's so good to be back there.

  38. Let me pray for us,

  39. and then we're going to dive into this passage.

  40. So, Father God, once again,

  41. once again, God,

  42. we come and we quieten ourselves.

  43. We still ourselves.

  44. We come to your Word.

  45. Your Word, God,

  46. which for 2,000 years and more

  47. has spoken life to so many people

  48. in every country,

  49. in every culture,

  50. in every corner of the globe,

  51. God, your Word has brought us face to face

  52. with King Jesus.

  53. And Lord, we ask you to do that again this morning.

  54. We ask God that you give us clarity

  55. about who you are and who we are in you.

  56. We ask God that you come and speak to us.

  57. God, won't you both encourage us and challenge us?

  58. And ultimately, won't you bring us to the feet of Jesus?

  59. Won't you help us to love you and trust you and obey you?

  60. Christ, come and have your way.

  61. In your wonderful and your gracious name we pray.

  62. Amen.

  63. Amen.

  64. I grew up in South Africa,

  65. many of you will know,

  66. and in South Africa,

  67. one of the sports that South Africans love to play

  68. is the game of rugby.

  69. Okay?

  70. I don't know how much you know about rugby.

  71. You might say it's kind of like American football,

  72. but not.

  73. Sorry, Bernard and any other Australians or New Zealanders.

  74. But so you've got this field

  75. and there's two posts on either end

  76. and there's a halfway line

  77. and the one team's got to get the ball to the other side

  78. and kind of put it down in the end goal area.

  79. Okay?

  80. But the thing with rugby is there are all these lines in the field.

  81. So there's the halfway line,

  82. then there's the 10-meter line,

  83. then there's the 22-meter line,

  84. the 5-meter line,

  85. and eventually the tri-line.

  86. Okay?

  87. So it can be a bit confusing sometimes.

  88. And I have a good friend.

  89. His name is Greg.

  90. And when we were at school one day,

  91. Greg played on the wing,

  92. which means he was pretty fast,

  93. and his job was to get the ball

  94. and then sprint down the wing as fast as he could

  95. and get it over the tri-line.

  96. And so he's playing,

  97. and his team's got the ball,

  98. and they're passing along,

  99. passing along,

  100. and eventually they pass the ball to him,

  101. and Greg reckons this is his moment to shine.

  102. And so he puts his head down,

  103. arm under the ball,

  104. and he runs like crazy down the line.

  105. And he sees the line in front of him,

  106. and he thinks this is his moment of glory.

  107. And so he thinks all the TV cameras are on him,

  108. and he dives this glorious,

  109. like, super sport dive,

  110. puts the ball down,

  111. throws it up in the air,

  112. and cheers.

  113. Yeah!

  114. And he catches the ball again,

  115. and the opposition just come

  116. and tackle him down to the ground.

  117. And I'm sure you can guess what happened.

  118. He dived over the wrong line, right?

  119. And so he was still in the field of play,

  120. and he thought he was on the tri-line,

  121. and he celebrated like Cristiano Ronaldo,

  122. and he had completely dived over the wrong line,

  123. and it was all for nothing.

  124. I'll tell you that story

  125. because this morning the passage we're going to look at

  126. is very similar,

  127. but in a very dissimilar way.

  128. It tells us,

  129. this morning we're going to look at a passage

  130. that shows us how dangerous it is

  131. and what it's like when we're confused

  132. about what's real and what's false,

  133. about what it looks like in our Christian lives

  134. when we get confused about the reality of who God is

  135. and what he's called us to do.

  136. This morning we're talking about when religion misses the point.

  137. And so look at what's happening in the passage here today.

  138. Matthew tells us that Jesus is walking with his disciples

  139. through some grain fields.

  140. It's on the Saturday morning,

  141. which is, of course, the Sabbath,

  142. and the disciples are a little hungry.

  143. It's still a little while until yamcha,

  144. and so they're picking the heads of grain,

  145. and they are snacking to get them through to lunchtime, okay?

  146. And while they do this,

  147. some Pharisees who are the religious leaders,

  148. they see what's going on,

  149. and they are freaking out.

  150. And so they protest at Jesus.

  151. They throw their hands in the air.

  152. Jesus, what are your disciples doing?

  153. Look at what they say in verse 2.

  154. Jesus, your disciples are doing

  155. what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.

  156. Now, the issue here is not that the disciples

  157. are stealing some farmer's grain.

  158. In the Old Testament, God made a law

  159. that said the farmers, when they harvest their crops,

  160. they're not to harvest the whole field.

  161. They're to leave the edges

  162. so that the poor and the marginalized,

  163. especially widows or orphans or foreigners,

  164. can pick up some of the food.

  165. So the issue is not that they're taking some farmer's food.

  166. The issue is that they are doing this on the Sabbath.

  167. On the Sabbath.

  168. Now, why is that an issue?

  169. Well, in the Old Testament,

  170. God commanded His people to keep the Sabbath day holy.

  171. Remember, we looked at this last year

  172. when we did the Ten Commandments.

  173. It's a day, the purpose of observing the Sabbath

  174. was threefold.

  175. Firstly, it's a day of rest and no work.

  176. No work to be done.

  177. Secondly, it's a day of community worship,

  178. of worshiping God, of filling your souls

  179. with who God is, revitalizing,

  180. and filling your souls,

  181. delighting in who God is.

  182. And these two things together,

  183. no work and community worship,

  184. lead us to the third thing.

  185. The point of the Sabbath

  186. was to remind God's people,

  187. as well as the nations around them,

  188. that God's people,

  189. their future and their provision

  190. and their safety and their security

  191. was not in their hard work

  192. or their abundance of their productivity,

  193. but in who God was

  194. and who they were in God.

  195. So when all the other nations around them

  196. are working seven days a week,

  197. are harvesting their crops,

  198. are picking up their swords and their shields

  199. and defending themselves,

  200. when all the other nations are saying,

  201. our future depends on our hands,

  202. God built this once a week rhythm

  203. into play in the nation of Israel

  204. so that once a week they're reminded,

  205. our future doesn't depend on us,

  206. Israel does not depend on hard work alone,

  207. but the grace and the faithfulness of God.

  208. Okay, so these three things,

  209. no work, community worship,

  210. delighting in God,

  211. and a reminder that they're God's people

  212. and that their life and their safety

  213. depends not on themselves,

  214. but on who God is.

  215. And this is so important

  216. that the people of God know and remember

  217. and build this into their weekly rhythm,

  218. that they're God's people,

  219. not their own,

  220. that observing the Sabbath

  221. was a matter of life and death.

  222. In the Old Testament,

  223. to break the Sabbath

  224. was a capital offense.

  225. You could be put to death for it.

  226. It was so serious,

  227. and the reason it's so serious

  228. is because Israel knows

  229. that not only individuals' lives,

  230. but the nation's life or death

  231. depends on their faithfulness

  232. to who God is

  233. and finding their identity

  234. and security in God.

  235. And so Israel knows

  236. that if the people of Israel

  237. forsake God

  238. and start taking matters

  239. into their own hands,

  240. if they start thinking,

  241. God doesn't have us,

  242. we've got ourselves,

  243. or our future's in our hands,

  244. Israel's in trouble.

  245. But if they can remain faithful to God

  246. and constantly,

  247. week by week,

  248. say,

  249. Lord,

  250. our life is not in our hands,

  251. it's in you,

  252. they will flourish.

  253. And so the nation of Israel,

  254. it's a matter of life and death.

  255. As they trust God,

  256. they're going to flourish

  257. and grow in life.

  258. As they trust themselves,

  259. they're going to move towards death.

  260. And so what happened is that when,

  261. and so,

  262. for the observance of the Sabbath

  263. is like the quintessential symbol

  264. of whether Israel is trusting God

  265. or trusting in themselves.

  266. Now,

  267. the prime example of this,

  268. of course,

  269. of Israel trusting in themselves

  270. and things going badly

  271. is when Israel go to Babylon.

  272. Remember,

  273. we looked at this in the Daniel series.

  274. For 70 years,

  275. the nation of Israel

  276. has marched off to Babylon.

  277. They're slaves there in exile.

  278. Babylon is mastering over them.

  279. And all this is because

  280. they've abandoned God.

  281. And the prophets constantly say,

  282. they pick up on this thing

  283. of you've abandoned the Sabbath.

  284. Rather than trusting and delighting God,

  285. you've trusted and delighted in yourself.

  286. And because of this,

  287. we're ending up in Babylon.

  288. And now 700 years fast forward,

  289. Israel's in the same position.

  290. Except now,

  291. it's not Babylon who's mastering them,

  292. it's the Romans.

  293. The Romans have got Israel

  294. under enemy occupation, right?

  295. And so,

  296. for Israel,

  297. the sign that the Romans

  298. are on top of them

  299. is the sign

  300. that they've abandoned God,

  301. they've forsaken His ways,

  302. they've trusted themselves,

  303. and they are now in deep trouble.

  304. And so,

  305. the Pharisees,

  306. the religious leaders

  307. who hate the Romans,

  308. their big idea is,

  309. we've got to do everything we can

  310. to get Israel

  311. to return to God.

  312. For the Pharisees,

  313. returning to God,

  314. returning to obedience,

  315. taking God's laws seriously,

  316. is the way to freedom

  317. and the way to get rid of the Romans.

  318. Because if Israel can take God's word seriously,

  319. if they can return to Him

  320. rather than themselves,

  321. if they can trust in Him

  322. rather than themselves,

  323. God will raise up a deliverer,

  324. a mighty king like David,

  325. who will overthrow the Romans

  326. and bring freedom and deliverance.

  327. If Israel can return to God

  328. rather than trusting in themselves,

  329. the temple will be cleaned

  330. and God's presence will come down.

  331. If Israel can return to God

  332. rather than trusting in themselves,

  333. all the great and glorious promises

  334. that God had spoken in His Old Testament

  335. will be fulfilled.

  336. And so,

  337. the Pharisees have read the Old Testament.

  338. They've read things like

  339. Isaiah chapter 2

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  340. that says,

  341. God is going to restore Israel

  342. like a mighty mountain

  343. and all the nations of the world

  344. will flood

  345. to the highest mountain on earth.

  346. Now,

  347. have you ever read Isaiah chapter 60

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  348. that says,

  349. behold,

  350. the light is going to shine on you

  351. and the kings of the earth

  352. are going to be drawn to your dawn.

  353. And so,

  354. the Pharisees are looking around them

  355. and saying,

  356. we are not obeying God.

  357. We're not working hard enough.

  358. We're not obeying the Sabbath.

  359. Because of immoral people

  360. like you disciples

  361. that are breaking God's law,

  362. these Romans are occupying us

  363. and now we end the enemy occupation.

  364. And so,

  365. the Pharisees aren't just trying

  366. to be religious nerds

  367. or legalistics

  368. or moralists.

  369. They deeply want Israel

  370. to be restored,

  371. the promises of God

  372. that He's spoken

  373. in the Old Testament

  374. to come to pass.

  375. For them,

  376. it's a matter of life

  377. and death.

  378. Israel's life

  379. or Israel's death.

  380. And so,

  381. the Sabbath

  382. is like the picture

  383. of who Israel's trusting,

  384. themselves or God.

  385. In fact,

  386. the Sabbath

  387. was so important

  388. that a couple of times

  389. in Israel's history,

  390. about a hundred years

  391. before Jesus comes,

  392. the Jews are being attacked

  393. by another nation.

  394. And the nation attacks them

  395. on the Sabbath.

  396. But the Jews figure,

  397. it's the Sabbath day.

  398. Rather be attacked

  399. by our enemies

  400. than coming to God's judgment.

  401. And so,

  402. they all put down their swords,

  403. they put down their shields,

  404. they open up the city gates,

  405. and the enemy march in

  406. and desecrate them.

  407. They'd rather be killed

  408. by the enemy

  409. than fall under God's judgment.

  410. It's a matter

  411. of life and death.

  412. Okay,

  413. this is all kind of background.

  414. We're getting to the passage.

  415. Now,

  416. to make sure

  417. that nobody

  418. in any possible way,

  419. whether voluntarily

  420. or involuntarily,

  421. would break

  422. the Sabbath commandments,

  423. the Jewish leaders

  424. came up with a list

  425. of 39 categories of work

  426. that no one

  427. was allowed to do

  428. on the Sabbath.

  429. And each of those categories

  430. have like

  431. between three

  432. and ten rules

  433. forbidding certain things

  434. that you can do.

  435. Okay?

  436. So,

  437. for instance,

  438. you got a glass of water,

  439. you can't throw the water

  440. out the window

  441. because the water

  442. may fall on some plants

  443. and then you water

  444. your crops

  445. and then that's breaking

  446. the Sabbath.

  447. Okay?

  448. One of the laws said

  449. that if you got a building

  450. and a wall

  451. falls down,

  452. okay,

  453. the side of your building

  454. falls down

  455. and there are people

  456. that are trapped underneath,

  457. if they're still alive,

  458. you can rescue them

  459. because that's life or death

  460. but if they're dead,

  461. you can't touch it.

  462. It's the Sabbath.

  463. You've got to leave it

  464. until the next day

  465. to go and restore

  466. the dead bodies.

  467. Okay?

  468. So,

  469. there are all these

  470. hundreds of rules,

  471. 39 categories

  472. times 10 different rules,

  473. hundreds of rules

  474. of what you can

  475. and can't do

  476. on the Sabbath.

  477. And this,

  478. as we said,

  479. isn't because they're

  480. just trying to be

  481. legalistic.

  482. They so absolutely

  483. want to make sure

  484. that they are honoring God.

  485. But here's what happened.

  486. Okay?

  487. This is the key

  488. to understanding

  489. this passage.

  490. Invariably what happened

  491. is that what was meant

  492. to be a gift

  493. of God's grace,

  494. okay,

  495. don't open your emails,

  496. don't open your computer,

  497. put away your phone,

  498. don't check social media,

  499. don't work,

  500. quieten your soul,

  501. focus on God.

  502. What was meant

  503. to be a gift of grace,

  504. turned into a system

  505. of rules.

  506. Don't do this,

  507. don't do this,

  508. don't water the plants,

  509. don't get in your car,

  510. don't turn on the lights.

  511. Okay?

  512. And what became

  513. a system of rules

  514. turned into a system

  515. of righteousness.

  516. Who was in

  517. and who was out?

  518. Who was righteous

  519. and who was a sinner?

  520. Who was good

  521. in God's eyes

  522. and who was bad?

  523. And so the person

  524. that throws the water

  525. out the window

  526. is an unrighteous sinner.

  527. But the person

  528. that sits quietly

  529. at home

  530. and doesn't do anything,

  531. well,

  532. they're good

  533. in God's eyes.

  534. And the person

  535. that gets in their car

  536. to go to the shops,

  537. oh,

  538. what a wicked,

  539. evil person.

  540. But the person

  541. that stays at home,

  542. oh,

  543. they must be really

  544. God-honoring,

  545. God-fearing.

  546. And so what is meant

  547. to be a gift of grace

  548. becomes a system

  549. of rules

  550. and the system

  551. of rules

  552. becomes a system

  553. of who's in

  554. and who's out,

  555. a system

  556. of righteousness.

  557. And so look

  558. what happens here

  559. with the Pharisees.

  560. They see the disciples

  561. of Jesus

  562. and they see them

  563. doing something

  564. that they consider

  565. a flagrant breaking

  566. of the rules,

  567. like rule 37

  568. or something.

  569. And look at what

  570. they're doing.

  571. They're breaking

  572. four rules.

  573. They are reaping,

  574. okay,

  575. they're picking

  576. the harvest.

  577. They are winnowing,

  578. which means they're

  579. breaking the stalk

  580. off the head.

  581. They are threshing,

  582. which means they're

  583. taking the husk

  584. away from the actual core.

  585. And they're preparing

  586. a meal.

  587. Four of these

  588. great rules

  589. of the Pharisees

  590. that these disciples

  591. are breaking.

  592. And now they look

  593. at Jesus and say,

  594. Jesus,

  595. you meant to be a rabbi

  596. and your disciples

  597. are breaking the rules.

  598. Just what kind

  599. of rabbi

  600. are you?

  601. So what is Jesus

  602. going to say?

  603. What is Jesus

  604. going to say?

  605. Well,

  606. Jesus gives them

  607. three replies,

  608. all from the

  609. scriptures,

  610. to show them

  611. how they've dived

  612. over the wrong

  613. trial line.

  614. He's showing them

  615. that though they

  616. are fastidious

  617. in their rules

  618. and their regulations,

  619. they've completely

  620. missed the whole point.

  621. Look what Jesus

  622. says in verse

  623. three to five.

  624. He says to them,

  625. have you not read

  626. what David did

  627. when he was hungry

  628. and those who

  629. were with him,

  630. how he entered

  631. into the house

  632. of God

  633. and ate the bread

  634. of the presence,

  635. which is not lawful

  636. for him to do,

  637. nor for those

  638. who are with him,

  639. but only for the

  640. priests.

  641. Now,

  642. Jesus is being

  643. a little cheeky

  644. here because he

  645. says,

  646. haven't you read

  647. your Old Testament?

  648. But the Pharisees

  649. haven't just read

  650. the Old Testament,

  651. they've memorized

  652. the whole thing,

  653. they know it off

  654. by heart.

  655. So he's kind of

  656. digging at them

  657. a little bit.

  658. And he's saying

  659. to them,

  660. don't you remember

  661. Samuel 21,

  662. right?

  663. When David,

  664. King David,

  665. are with his

  666. band of soldiers.

  667. Now,

  668. the story here

  669. is that David

  670. has been anointed

  671. king of Israel.

  672. He's not on the

  673. throne yet,

  674. Saul is still

  675. on the throne,

  676. but David's been

  677. anointed.

  678. He's the king

  679. elect.

  680. And Saul is

  681. jealous because

  682. of David.

  683. And so Saul

  684. wants to kill

  685. him.

  686. And so David

  687. and his friends

  688. run into the

  689. wilderness,

  690. they flee from

  691. Saul's army.

  692. And while they're

  693. in the wilderness,

  694. they run out of

  695. food,

  696. but they walk

  697. past the

  698. tabernacle.

  699. Now,

  700. the tabernacle

  701. is a precursor

  702. to the temple.

  703. And they know

  704. that inside

  705. the tabernacle

  706. is a whole lot

  707. of bread.

  708. It's the holy

  709. bread that the

  710. priests bake

  711. every day and

  712. put there as a

  713. kind of offering

  714. to God.

  715. And so David

  716. goes to the

  717. priests and

  718. says,

  719. listen,

  720. we hungry,

  721. we need some

  722. bread,

  723. we know there's

  724. some bread in

  725. there,

  726. can we eat

  727. the holy

  728. bread?

  729. And the

  730. priests

  731. deliberate a

  732. bit,

  733. I'm not so

  734. sure,

  735. this is breaking

  736. the law.

  737. But David

  738. says,

  739. listen,

  740. it's a matter

  741. of life and

  742. death.

  743. And so they're

  744. okay.

  745. And they give

  746. David the

  747. holy bread.

  748. And David

  749. and his

  750. friends eat

  751. it.

  752. And Jesus

  753. says,

  754. what does God

  755. say about

  756. this?

  757. Is David

  758. condemned?

  759. Is he written

  760. off as this

  761. unrighteous

  762. sinner?

  763. The scripture

  764. says nothing.

  765. It doesn't

  766. condemn him as a

  767. heretic.

  768. It doesn't

  769. write him off as

  770. a sinner.

  771. It doesn't

  772. moan about him as

  773. breaking God's

  774. law.

  775. God's word

  776. says nothing

  777. about this

  778. flagrant breaking

  779. of the law.

  780. Why?

  781. Because it's a

  782. matter of life

  783. and death.

  784. God knows

  785. that David's

  786. men,

  787. their life is

  788. more important

  789. than the

  790. technicalities

  791. of the law.

  792. But what does

  793. scripture say

  794. about David?

  795. It says that

  796. he's a man

  797. after God's

  798. own heart.

  799. A man

  800. after God's

  801. own heart.

  802. And Jesus

  803. points that if

  804. the great

  805. king David

  806. committed a

  807. far greater

  808. breach of the

  809. Sabbath laws when

  810. he was in need

  811. when it really

  812. was life and

  813. death,

  814. well then you've

  815. got to extend a

  816. bit of grace to

  817. these disciples

  818. themselves.

  819. Now, if you

  820. are one of the

  821. Pharisees, what

  822. do you say to

  823. this?

  824. Well I imagine

  825. the Pharisees

  826. have probably

  827. said something

  828. like, okay,

  829. good point.

  830. But, that's

  831. David, right?

  832. David is the

  833. greatest king

  834. Israel ever

  835. had.

  836. David is the

  837. great rescuer,

  838. the redeemer,

  839. the restorer of

  840. Israel.

  841. David is the

  842. guy who brought

  843. us peace and

  844. security.

  845. When all our

  846. enemies were

  847. attacking us,

  848. David is the

  849. one guy that

  850. brought Israel

  851. the most peace.

  852. David is the

  853. greatest king

  854. we've ever had.

  855. Jesus, who

  856. are you?

  857. And that's the

  858. question, isn't

  859. it?

  860. Jesus, who

  861. are you?

  862. Well, Jesus

  863. doesn't answer the

  864. question because

  865. Jesus goes on and

  866. he tells them another

  867. example.

  868. He says, well

  869. consider the fact

  870. that on the

  871. Sabbath, when

  872. everyone's meant

  873. to be resting

  874. from work, when

  875. everyone's meant

  876. to be worshipping

  877. God, who is

  878. running around

  879. crazy working

  880. hard?

  881. It's the

  882. priests.

  883. The priests are

  884. meant to be the

  885. most sanctimonious,

  886. the most religious,

  887. the most dedicated

  888. to God.

  889. And yet they're the

  890. one people that on

  891. the Sabbath day are

  892. running around working

  893. doubly hard.

  894. And what does

  895. scripture say about

  896. them?

  897. Does God condemn

  898. them?

  899. No, he doesn't.

  900. Because the

  901. reality of

  902. worship trumps

  903. the regulations

  904. about the

  905. Sabbath.

  906. The gift of

  907. grace is a

  908. means to an

  909. end, not an

  910. end in itself.

  911. The purpose of

  912. the Sabbath is

  913. to promote

  914. worship, not

  915. to be

  916. worshipped.

  917. It promotes

  918. rest and

  919. faithfulness, joy,

  920. not regulations

  921. and rituals and

  922. levels of

  923. righteousness.

  924. righteousness.

  925. The Sabbath is

  926. meant to lead

  927. us to Christ,

  928. not meant to be

  929. a scorecard by

  930. which we measure

  931. how righteous

  932. we are.

  933. Jesus says that

  934. worship trumps

  935. ritual any day

  936. of the week.

  937. Now, if you're

  938. the Pharisees,

  939. what do you say

  940. to that?

  941. Say, okay,

  942. good point.

  943. But, those

  944. are the

  945. priests.

  946. I mean, the

  947. priests are

  948. those that are

  949. anointed and

  950. set apart for

  951. God's service.

  952. the priests

  953. are the ones

  954. that bring us

  955. forgiveness of

  956. sins and

  957. offer sacrifice

  958. and offering.

  959. If the priests

  960. stop doing their

  961. work, who's

  962. going to bring

  963. us forgiveness?

  964. Who's going to

  965. atone for our

  966. guilt?

  967. Who's going to

  968. offer the

  969. sacrifices and

  970. the offerings?

  971. If the priests

  972. stop doing their

  973. work, Israel's

  974. in trouble.

  975. Jesus, we need

  976. the priests, but

  977. Jesus, who are

  978. you?

  979. And Jesus

  980. gives them an

  981. answer, which

  982. may sound

  983. simple and

  984. well-established

  985. to us, but

  986. if you're

  987. first-century

  988. Israel, it

  989. is a

  990. bombshell.

  991. Jesus says

  992. something that

  993. is so

  994. provocative, so

  995. blasphemous, that

  996. it gets the

  997. hair on the

  998. back of the

  999. neck standing

  1000. up.

  1001. Look at what

  1002. Jesus says in

  1003. verse 6.

  1004. He says,

  1005. I tell you

  1006. the truth,

  1007. something greater

  1008. than the

  1009. temple is here.

  1010. Now, if you're

  1011. first-century

  1012. Jew, that is

  1013. like the worst

  1014. thing in the

  1015. whole world that

  1016. you can say,

  1017. right?

  1018. The temple is

  1019. the one place

  1020. where God's

  1021. presence dwells.

  1022. The temple is

  1023. the one place

  1024. that is so

  1025. holy, so

  1026. sacred, that

  1027. the high priest

  1028. can only go in

  1029. there in the

  1030. holy place once

  1031. a year.

  1032. The temple is

  1033. the place where

  1034. the Shekinah

  1035. glory of God

  1036. dwells.

  1037. Remember when

  1038. Uzzah, the

  1039. cart, the

  1040. ark is being

  1041. brought back to

  1042. Israel, Uzzah

  1043. reaches out and

  1044. touches it and

  1045. he falls down

  1046. dead because

  1047. God's glory

  1048. strikes him?

  1049. Well, the

  1050. temple is the

  1051. place where

  1052. God's glory

  1053. dwells.

  1054. It's heaven

  1055. on earth and

  1056. Jesus, this

  1057. man whose

  1058. disciples are

  1059. breaking his

  1060. Sabbath rules,

  1061. says,

  1062. something greater

  1063. than the

  1064. temple is in

  1065. your midst.

  1066. Me.

  1067. What's Jesus

  1068. saying?

  1069. He's saying

  1070. all those

  1071. sacrifices, all

  1072. those offerings,

  1073. all the

  1074. thousands of

  1075. rules that are

  1076. all surrounded

  1077. the temple are

  1078. ultimately found

  1079. in me.

  1080. And if you

  1081. don't come to

  1082. me, if you

  1083. obey all those

  1084. rules but you

  1085. don't come to

  1086. me, you've

  1087. missed the

  1088. point completely.

  1089. Jesus doesn't

  1090. say it, but I

  1091. think the

  1092. disciples would

  1093. have picked

  1094. up on it,

  1095. someone greater

  1096. than David is

  1097. here.

  1098. David, the

  1099. great king of

  1100. Israel who

  1101. brought peace

  1102. and security,

  1103. the true and

  1104. better David is

  1105. here.

  1106. David, the

  1107. great king, the

  1108. redeemer and the

  1109. restorer, the

  1110. one that fought

  1111. off their enemies

  1112. and brought peace

  1113. and security,

  1114. Jesus is the

  1115. true and better

  1116. David is here.

  1117. In other words,

  1118. if you have a

  1119. thousand Davids in

  1120. your midst, a

  1121. thousand great

  1122. kings and leaders

  1123. and rescuers and

  1124. restorers, but you

  1125. have not me, you

  1126. have nothing.

  1127. You see what

  1128. Jesus is saying?

  1129. Jesus is saying

  1130. that everything in

  1131. the Old Testament,

  1132. all the writings,

  1133. all the rules,

  1134. all the promises,

  1135. all the hopes,

  1136. everything the

  1137. Pharisees longed

  1138. for and were

  1139. praying for and

  1140. hoping for, all

  1141. of it comes down

  1142. to him.

  1143. In the New

  1144. Testament book of

  1145. Colossians, the

  1146. Apostle Paul writes

  1147. this in chapter 2

  1148. verse 16, he

  1149. says,

  1150. Let no one pass

  1151. judgment on you

  1152. in questions of

  1153. food or drink or

  1154. with regard to a

  1155. festival or a new

  1156. moon or the

  1157. Sabbath.

  1158. These are but a

  1159. shadow of the

  1160. things to come,

  1161. but the substance

  1162. belongs to Christ.

  1163. These things are a

  1164. shadow.

  1165. It's like a

  1166. silhouette.

  1167. Have you ever

  1168. seen a silhouette

  1169. and you go up,

  1170. have you ever tried

  1171. to give a silhouette

  1172. a hug?

  1173. Or have you ever

  1174. tried to have a

  1175. conversation with

  1176. the silhouette?

  1177. It's not going to

  1178. be very fruitful.

  1179. All the thousands

  1180. of things, the

  1181. rules and the

  1182. regulations, the

  1183. Sabbath, the

  1184. sacrifices, the

  1185. offerings, the

  1186. temple, the

  1187. priests, the

  1188. thousands of

  1189. things in God's

  1190. word are all

  1191. just a shadow, a

  1192. silhouette, but the

  1193. substance is in

  1194. Jesus.

  1195. And what Jesus is

  1196. saying here is

  1197. that the Pharisees

  1198. are freaking out

  1199. because his

  1200. disciples are

  1201. breaking their

  1202. man-made rules.

  1203. They think they're

  1204. desecrating the

  1205. Sabbath because

  1206. they're making a

  1207. mockery of all

  1208. that's sacred and

  1209. holy.

  1210. And Jesus says

  1211. that the true and

  1212. ultimate embodiment

  1213. and fulfillment of

  1214. everything God's

  1215. law spoke about is

  1216. found in him.

  1217. Friends, you know

  1218. that we do the

  1219. same thing?

  1220. We can be so

  1221. busy in church.

  1222. We can run

  1223. around and we

  1224. can serve in

  1225. ICF and serve in

  1226. youth ministry and

  1227. serve in kids

  1228. ministry and serve

  1229. in the band.

  1230. We can run

  1231. around doing a

  1232. thousand things and

  1233. miss Jesus.

  1234. And we can come

  1235. to church and we

  1236. can sing the songs

  1237. and we can take

  1238. communion and we

  1239. can pray with

  1240. people afterwards

  1241. and we can miss

  1242. Jesus.

  1243. And we can be

  1244. involved in outreach

  1245. opportunities and

  1246. serve the poor and

1247. be part of a CG

1248. and be part of a

1249. TG and be part of

1250. an FG and be a

  1251. part of some

  1252. other G and do

  1253. a thousand things

  1254. and our hearts

  1255. can be cold and

  1256. numb to Jesus.

  1257. Friends, Jesus

  1258. says the true and

  1259. lasting rest is not

  1260. found in a Sabbath

1261. or in one day of

  1262. the week.

  1263. It's found in

  1264. coming to him.

  1265. Jesus says that

  1266. peace with God is

  1267. not found in the

  1268. sacrifices and the

  1269. offerings.

  1270. It's found in

  1271. coming to him.

  1272. Jesus says that

  1273. forgiveness and

  1274. cleansing and

  1275. redemption from

  1276. judgment to come is

  1277. not found in

  1278. traveling hundreds of

  1279. miles to the

  1280. temple.

  1281. It's found in the

  1282. sacrifice and the

  1283. offering that Jesus

  1284. would offer on the

  1285. cross.

  1286. It's found in him.

  1287. And Jesus claims to

  1288. be embodiment of

  1289. everything that Israel

  1290. held sacred.

  1291. The temple, the

  1292. perfection of the

  1293. law, the Sabbath day

  1294. principle, the great

  1295. king David.

  1296. Jesus says all of

  1297. these come to me.

  1298. And therefore Jesus

  1299. is saying that

  1300. salvation, not just

  1301. from judgment and

  1302. hell, that's true,

1303. but the life that God

  1304. offers, the fullness

  1305. of life, the

  1306. abundance of life that

  1307. Christianity preaches

  1308. and declares are not

1309. found in any ritual or

  1310. tradition or system of

  1311. righteousness, they're

1312. not even found in the

  1313. gifts that God gives

1314. us, they are found in

  1315. those gifts leading us

  1316. to King Jesus.

  1317. For the Jews, the

1318. Sabbath was a matter of

  1319. life and death, but

1320. friends, it's so true for

  1321. us as well.

  1322. It's a matter of life

  1323. and death whether we

  1324. come to Jesus.

  1325. Sam Albury tells this

1326. great story and I want

1327. to share it with you.

1328. He tells the story of he

1329. had a friend who wanted

1330. to become a pastor and

1331. so he went off to

  1332. seminary.

  1333. Now seminary is like

  1334. where you train to

  1335. become a pastor.

1336. And so his friend goes

  1337. to seminary and he's

  1338. learning all these

  1339. amazing things about the

  1340. Greek New Testament and

  1341. the Hebrew Old

  1342. Testament and these big

1343. words and how to study

  1344. the Bible and homiletics

  1345. and all these wonderful

1346. things and he's so proud

1347. of himself and what he's

1348. learning and how well he

  1349. knows the Bible.

1350. And during one of his

  1351. school holidays, he goes

1352. back home to his small

1353. rural town and he goes

  1354. to church with his

  1355. family and the pastor

  1356. uses some big words

  1357. like eschatological or

  1358. something like that.

1359. And he's so proud of

  1360. himself that he knows

  1361. what this means.

1362. And so he turns to his

  1363. dad and he says,

1364. Hey dad, do you know

  1365. what eschatology means?

1366. And his dad just whispers,

1367. isn't that when you love

  1368. Jesus very, very much?

1369. And what his dad was

1370. saying was, you can know

1371. all the big words, son, but

  1372. if you don't love Jesus, it's

1373. all a pile of nothing.

1374. And his dad was just very

  1375. deliberately, very subtly

1376. saying, who cares about the

1377. big words in all your

  1378. education?

1379. You can know the Greek and

  1380. the Hebrew.

1381. You can know eschatology and

  1382. homiletics and soteriology and

  1383. all those things.

1384. But if that doesn't lead you

1385. to love Jesus, it's all for

  1386. nothing.

1387. Friends, what about you and

  1388. I?

  1389. I know that as a church, we're

1390. really busy and we're doing

  1391. lots of things.

  1392. We'll talk about that in a

  1393. minute.

1394. Are God's gifts of grace like

1395. CG and church worship and

1396. Bible reading and prayer, are

1397. these things leading you to

1398. the wonder and the beauty of

  1399. Jesus?

1400. Are these things leading you to

1401. love and trust Jesus more?

1402. Are these just gifts of grace

1403. that have become rules of

1404. regulation that are soon going

  1405. to become rules of

  1406. righteousness?

1407. Friends, Jesus calls us back to

1408. himself and says, what are you

  1409. doing with me?

1410. What are you doing with me?

1411. John Stott says that the

1412. Pharisees were so anxious to

1413. study what the scriptures said

1414. that they could not see what the

  1415. scriptures meant.

1416. And what is the meaning of

  1417. scripture?

1418. The meaning of the scripture

1419. is actually what Celeste read to

  1420. us in chapter 11.

1421. Look at how Jesus puts it in

  1422. chapter 11.

1423. He says, you who are weary and

1424. heavy laden, you who are so

1425. burdened by the rules of the law,

1426. you who are so burdened by the

1427. rules and this and that and do

1428. this and don't do this and the

1429. Sabbath day and this and this and

1430. that, you who are anxious and

1431. weary and exhausted and burnt out,

  1432. come to me.

1433. Come to me, all you who labor and

1434. are heavy laden and I, says Jesus,

  1435. will give you rest.

1436. Take my yoke upon you and learn

1437. from me for I am gentle and lowly in

1438. heart and you will find rest for

1439. your souls for my yoke is easy and

  1440. my burden is light.

1441. Friends, are you exhausted or burnt

1442. out from all your serving?

1443. Maybe each time you walk into

1444. church, you think to yourself, I

1445. hope nobody asks me to do anything

  1446. today.

1447. Or maybe worse, you walk into

1448. church and you think, what is God

1449. going to ask me to do today?

1450. One more burden, one more thing

1451. that the preacher in the front is

1452. going to tell me to do.

1453. One more duty to perform to be a

  1454. good Christian.

1455. Friends, are you exhausted and

  1456. burnt out?

1457. Do you feel like your shoulders are

1458. weighed down by all the things that

1459. God and church and preachers and

1460. Christians ask you to do?

1461. Friends, you may be extremely busy

1462. doing a thousand things and may not

1463. even be a Christian at all because

1464. you've never come to Jesus and found

  1465. your rest in Him.

1466. Jesus says, come to me.

  1467. Come to me.

1468. Now, before we get to application, there's one

1469. last thing we need to see in this passage and

1470. that is Jesus gives us a clue, a hint, almost

1471. a symptom that we can see of how we know

1472. whether our religion is missing the point.

1473. How we know whether we are coming to Jesus

1474. or whether we are religious.

1475. Because let's be honest, it's pretty hard

  1476. to tell.

1477. Sometimes we come to church and we do all

1478. the things and we think we're on track and

1479. we actually have not even realized that we've

  1480. missed the point completely.

1481. Look at what Jesus says in verse 7.

1482. Jesus actually tells us how we know whether

1483. we're missing Jesus or whether we are

1484. whether we are coming to Jesus or whether

1485. we're being religious is the way that we

  1486. treat other people.

1487. Look what He says in verse 7.

1488. If you had known what this means, I desire

1489. mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have

  1490. condemned the guiltless.

1491. Now, Jesus is quoting from Hosea chapter 6.

    Hosea 6 chapter mention

1492. It's one of His favorite quotes.

1493. He quotes it a couple of times throughout the

  1494. gospels.

1495. And when Hosea says that God desires mercy,

1496. He's not talking about the mercy we receive

  1497. from God.

1498. He's not talking about the mercy we give to

  1499. God.

1500. He's talking about the mercy that we extend

  1501. to one another.

1502. What God is saying here is that you can come

1503. to church and offer a hundred thousand

1504. bills as sacrifice or drop a million dollars

  1505. in the offering basket.

1506. But if you've trampled over the beggar on the

1507. way to church or if you've screamed and

1508. shouted at your spouse and told them what an

1509. idiot they are and then you come and worship

1510. Christ at church, it's all for nothing.

1511. I desire mercy and steadfast love to the

1512. brothers and sisters around you far more than I

  1513. desire offering and sacrifice.

1514. And what Jesus is saying is that one of the symptoms

1515. that we know whether we really come to Him,

1516. whether our hearts are really trusting in Him,

1517. whether we're loving and trusting and obeying Jesus

1518. as opposed to ourselves, will be manifest in the way

1519. that we treat one another.

1520. Friends, maybe I can ask you, are you bitter and angry?

1521. Do you sometimes come to church and you think if one

1522. person asks one more thing of me, I swear I'm going to

  1523. snap?

1524. Friends, maybe you've served in so many ways and you think,

  1525. I'm doing everything I have got.

  1526. I've given everything I have.

  1527. I can't give anything more.

  1528. Friends, come to Jesus.

1529. Don't come to Him with what you've done for Him.

  1530. Come empty-handed.

  1531. Come weary and heavy-laden.

1532. Come to Him and find your rest.

1533. Find your identity, find your security.

1534. Come and find your rest in Him.

1535. This is the big idea.

1536. Jesus says, true Sabbath rest is found not in what you do

1537. for Him, it's found in what He's done for you.

1538. Jesus is the true and better King, David, who brings us

  1539. true peace and security.

1540. Jesus is the true and better sacrifice that atones for our

1541. sin and reconciles us with God.

1542. Jesus is the true and better offering that presents us

  1543. acceptable to God.

1544. Jesus is the true and better Lord, the one who really tells

  1545. us how to live.

1546. Now, what does all this mean?

1547. Well, I've got two applications for us before we close.

1548. One corporate for us as a church family, one individual.

  1549. The corporate one first.

1550. Watermark family, in case you haven't noticed, we are a very

  1551. busy church.

1552. And over the last two years, we've become even more busy.

1553. I was just thinking this week of some of the things that we do.

1554. As elders, we've got a weekly prayer meeting where we pray for

  1555. the church each week.

1556. We started about a year and a half ago a monthly prayer meeting

1557. where we as a church gather to pray together.

1558. We are trying to take massive ground in the social justice space.

1559. So we're doing things with safe families and single moms.

1560. We are looking after vulnerable children.

1561. We're trying to engage with ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

1562. We are serving ladies in the red light districts of Hong Kong.

1563. We are trying to love and serve the foreign domestic workers of Hong Kong.

1564. We are looking to start an afternoon congregation in the coming months.

1565. We have revamped our youth ministry, and youth is going.

1566. Our university ministry, we just heard, is kicking it out the park and doing great stuff.

1567. We've started a couple of CGs this year.

  1568. We've started one-to-one Bible reading.

1569. We are trying to better equip parents on how to disciple their kids.

1570. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

1571. Would you agree with me?

1572. We are a busy church.

1573. And we're doing this because we want to be faithful to Jesus.

1574. We want to become the kind of church that Jesus wants us to be.

1575. And yet the danger is what is meant to be gifts of grace that lead us to Jesus

1576. can easily become systems of rules and regulations that then become systems of righteousness and justification.

1577. And like the Pharisees in Jesus' day, we can be utterly convinced this is what it means to serve Jesus.

1578. And yet we do not come to Him because we are exhausted and burnt out,

1579. and the means of grace have become rules and regulations.

1580. And maybe this is a bad idea.

1581. Elders, you can veto me at any point.

1582. But maybe, just maybe, we need to kill half the programs

1583. and become a church that just focuses on prayer and worship

1584. and coming to Jesus again and finding our rest in Him.

1585. Watermark, we are a busy church, and we are a wonderful church.

1586. But is it leading us to Jesus?

1587. Is it helping us trust Him and love Him and obey Him?

1588. Or is it becoming a system by which we pat ourselves on the back and say,

1589. look how busy we are?

  1590. That's the corporate one.

  1591. Here's the individual one.

1592. I think one of the warnings of this passage is that Jesus wants to demonstrate to us

1593. how easily the human heart turns gifts of grace into idols of justification.

1594. For the Jews in Jesus' day, the Sabbath became a means of self-righteousness,

1595. a system of justifying how good and righteous and devout they were.

1596. And yet the irony is that it kept them from finding the one person

1597. in whom their righteousness, justification, and redemption was really held.

1598. Friends, every one of us, Jesus calls us to engage in spiritual disciplines.

1599. But all those leading us to Jesus.

1600. And so tomorrow morning, I hope that most of us are going to get up early

1601. and we're going to read our Bibles and we're going to spend time in confession and repentance.

1602. And we're going to spend time and pray before we go to work and start off our day.

1603. But at the end of that time, is that going to be a box that we tick and say,

  1604. I've done my job?

1605. Or is that going to lead us to come to Jesus,

1606. weary and heavy laden, and find our rest in Him?

1607. Friends, tomorrow morning, I hope each one of us get up early and spend time in God's Word.

1608. But let it lead you to King Jesus.

1609. Let it lead you to the Gospel.

1610. Let it lead you to His grace and remember the Gospel and remind us that our life is found in Him.

1611. Jesus, our true and better King.

1612. Jesus, the true and better temple.

1613. Jesus, our true and better Sabbath.

1614. Jesus, the one that it's all about.

  1615. Jesus says,

1616. Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,

1617. and I will give you rest.

1618. Come and take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

1619. for I'm gentle and lowly in heart,

1620. and you will find rest for your souls.

1621. For my yoke is easy,

1622. and my burden is light.

  1623. Let's pray together.

  1624. Lord Jesus Christ,

  1625. we confess, God,

1626. that so easily we become like the Pharisees,

1627. and we turn what's meant to be a gift of grace

1628. into a system of rules and regulations,

  1629. into a system of self-justification.

1630. Father, won't you open our eyes once again to see you for who you are?

1631. Father, won't you open our eyes to see our desperate need to you,

  1632. to see that rest,

  1633. true Sabbath rest,

1634. that everything that the great Sabbath was all about is found in coming to you.

1635. Jesus, for those of us that are anxious and weary,

  1636. tired and exhausted,

1637. draw us to yourself, we pray,

1638. and come and help us to find our rest in you.

  1639. Amen.
