  1. Now, if you have your Bibles, perhaps you can open them again at Ecclesiastes chapter 8,

    Ecclesiastes 8 chapter mention

  2. a chapter that helps us to think about the limits of wisdom. Our question this evening is,

  3. how to live wisely, how do we live wisely in a world that is unstable and unpredictable?

  4. I think it's a very helpful chapter for us. It speaks to those of us who have ever acted unwisely.

  5. Perhaps we have talked back to a teacher and got ourselves into trouble, or we've spoken with our

  6. colleagues about our boss not realizing they were right behind us. Perhaps we've said, well,

  7. everyone else is doing it, and so we decide to do something we shouldn't, but we're the ones that

  8. get caught. Or when you've jumped in with words and actions before stopping to think, is this really

  9. the right time? A preacher can help us to recognize there is value in wisdom. But it's also a chapter

  10. that's really helpful if we've ever found ourselves thinking, well, if I just have wisdom and enough

  11. wisdom, then I've found the key to life and I can expect life to go smoothly. Maybe some of us have

  12. thought that and discovered the hard way that life comes with no guarantees. Life is unstable and

  13. unpredictable. Whether it's the people in our lives, whether it's the events and circumstances of life,

  14. there is always something or someone with the potential to turn things upside down.

  15. So Ecclesiastes chapter 8 is wisdom, and it's wisdom for real life.

    Ecclesiastes 8 chapter mention

  16. Our preacher is going to say to us, absolutely, wisdom is good, but we need to recognize that the

  17. best of wisdom has limits in the twists and turns of life. So we're going to see three guiding

  18. principles to move us through this chapter. One, that wisdom has value. Secondly, that wisdom has limits.

  19. But then as we finish, to recognize that wisdom is still to be chosen. This is God's wisdom.

  20. Principle one, wisdom has value. Look at chapter 8, verse 1. Who is like the wise? Who knows the

  21. explanation of things? A person's wisdom brightens their face and changes its hard appearance.

  22. In chapter 7, there were lots of better than statements. And in one of those, it said,

  23. wisdom is better than money. It's a better defense. It's a better security. It is something that is

  24. lasting. So we find our preachers very positive about wisdom, living God's way, which makes sense.

  25. God is our creator. So living by the maker's guidelines and instructions is wise and good.

  26. In verse 1, it's good for our understanding. Wisdom is a way of interpreting. It's a good thing to have

  27. wisdom to understand and interpret the events and the situations and the emotions that we experience

  28. day by day. There's benefit in that. Perhaps to illustrate, the world probably divides into lots

  29. of different ways. But one way that we divide is into those who can read maps and those who can't read

  30. maps. It's a bit different now that there's Google Maps. But if you go back in time, remember those days

  31. when you had to navigate a new city or you had to go on holiday? Some people read well, some people don't.

  32. Well, wisdom is like having that security and confidence. I can read the map. I can read the map of

  33. life. I can navigate by God's wisdom. So wisdom is good for understanding. It's also good for our happiness

  34. and our joy. That's why it says a person's wisdom brightens their face. It's like that aha moment,

  35. that moment of clarity. Things come clear. We find meaning. We find a good way forward. Wisdom is

  36. positive. Now, of course, we would expect the preacher to say that. After all, this is an Old Testament

  37. wisdom book. So wisdom, of course, is going to be better than folly. But he doesn't stop there.

  38. Remember, he's taking us on this journey through life under the sun, and he's going to show us not

  39. just that wisdom has value, but also that wisdom has limits. We go to the end of the chapter,

  40. verses 16 and 17. We hear a different tone. When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the

  41. labor that's done on earth, people getting no sleep day or night, then I saw all that God has done.

  42. And so on. Then the end of the verse, end of the chapter, even if the wise claim they know,

  43. they cannot really comprehend it. Life isn't black and white. And so the preacher is applying his mind

  44. to consider, what do we do when the rules just simply don't work out, when life doesn't go to plan?

  45. And so he is applying his mind. He's trying to figure life out. It gives him no sleep. And he's aware

  46. of all the things that cause sleeplessness in our lives. Maybe losing sleep because of anxiety,

  47. or stress, or fear. And as he applies his mind, he understands that wisdom has limits. It will not

  48. give us the key to life in and of itself. Why? Because God is in control. He sees that God is the ultimate

  49. actor. Just as he said in chapter 7, God acts, and we can't turn back those actions. If God makes a

  50. thing crooked, we cannot make it straight. He says we cannot fully comprehend all that God is doing in

  51. the world. Perhaps we've wrestled with that reality that God is God, and we are not. And we can struggle

  52. with that, and we will never come to discover the meaning of all that God is doing. In fact,

  53. you'll finish by saying, if you hear someone who claims, well, I have wisdom. I figured life out.

  54. They're wrong, because you can't. So wisdom is good. It has value. That's how he introduces the topic.

  55. Wisdom has limits. It's how he closes the topic, because of the world in which we live.

  56. We live in an unstable and unpredictable world. And so what happens in the middle of our chapter is he

  57. shows us three areas of life that impose limits on wisdom. And the first limit comes from authority.

  58. So verses 2 to 5, you find him considering authority by focusing on the king, who of course in the Old

  59. Testament was the ultimate authority figure. For our purpose, we can substitute that for any authority

  60. figure over us, whether that's our employer, our teacher, our government officials, our parents.

  61. There is authority established. And what does the preacher teach us about authority? Well, he says in

  62. verse 2, very simply, we should obey. Obey the king's command, I say, because you took an oath before

  63. God. Obey to keep the promise. Obeying the people in authority over us is one way of outworking

  64. the Ten Commandments. Obey to honor our father and mother by extension to honor those in authority.

  65. In the New Testament, Peter says to us, show proper respect to everyone. Love the family of believers.

  66. Fear God. Honor the emperor. So Old Testament, New Testament, we should honor those who are in authority.

  67. In verse 3 and verse 4, he says you should keep close to those in authority. Do not be in a hurry

  68. to leave the king's presence. Now perhaps, you know, showing loyalty to the king. Why?

  69. He says because the king is so powerful, he can do whatever he pleases.

  70. You should stick close to the king because his word is powerful and it is foolish to resist.

  71. There's a proverb in verse 5, whoever obeys his command will come to no harm and the wise heart will

  72. know the proper time and procedure. There is wisdom in knowing how to relate well to those in authority

  73. and to be guided by wisdom and how we do that. But there's an implied limit to wisdom.

  74. And it's this, and he's already spoken to us of this in chapter 5, authority figures don't always act

  75. justly. Authority figures can be unjust, cruel, and self-serving. Chapter 5, verse 9.

  76. After talking about the poor being oppressed by high-up officials, in verse 9 it says,

  77. the increase from the land is taken by all the king himself, profits from the fields.

  78. So even as the believer in the Lord Jesus looks to live wisely in this world, it won't always save us

  79. from knowing injustice in an unstable, unpredictable world, especially as we understand that our control

  80. is limited and there are authority figures over us. Maybe we know this if we've had experience of

  81. serving under a bad boss. Maybe we know this by experience as the tired parent who has lost the plot and

  82. acted unjustly to our children. There is a limit implied that wisdom won't shield us from bad authority.

  83. So that's one area of life in which there are limits to wisdom. The second area of life,

  84. verses 6 to 8, is to do with the times of our lives. And we've met this idea before.

  85. In chapter 7, verse 13 and 14, consider what God has done who can straighten what he has made crooked.

  86. When times are good, be happy. But when times are bad, consider this. God has made the one as well

  87. as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future. So our preacher will keep reminding

  88. us of this, that our times are in God's hands and often that creates limits to wisdom. Verse 6 has a twist

  89. on the proverb that we were just introduced to in verse 5, that there is a right way, there's a proper time,

  90. there's a proper procedure, but that right way may see us weighed down by misery. It may lead to us

  91. experiencing difficulty and trouble. The preacher reminds us in verse 7, no one knows the future. So we can't

  92. predict and we can't plan with certainty. We all plan, but we have to know that those plans may not come

  93. to fulfilment. And to help us to see that, in verse 8, he uses the image of the wind. As no one has power

  94. over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death. The wind is a force that can be

  95. dangerous. The wind is a force that is out of our control. Some of us know this well. You know hurricanes and

  96. typhoons or west coast storms. Well, the preacher says in the same way, you and I, we have no control over

  97. the day of our death. We have no control over war and peace. And we have no control over the grip of

  98. wickedness that we see in lives and in societies. And so the limit that he points to is this.

  99. God's wisdom does not guarantee the good life. We cannot get to the bottom of God's working. And so

  100. there is always the possibility of our life being turned upside down. I think this is a reminder of

  101. of the deceit of the prosperity gospel. It says, follow Jesus and health and wealth will be yours. Only good

  102. things will come your way. It's a reminder of that simplistic, here are seven steps to improve your

  103. life. There are always limits and uncertainties. We've thought before about Jesus' teaching. Remember his

  104. parable about the man who had a good crop and who decided that he would build bigger barns. He would

  105. store up for himself. He would eat, drink, and be merry. And he was called a fool. He didn't understand

  106. that he didn't have control over his life and he didn't understand that he needed to be right with his

  107. God. There's a third area of life where wisdom's limits confront us. And it's as we see the injustice

  108. that takes place in the world, which tragically shows itself in so many different ways as the preacher

  109. begins to outline for us. So in verse 9, what do we see there? There is a time when a man lords it over

  110. others to his own hurt and to the hurt of others. Don't we see corrupt rule? Don't we see the abuse of power?

  111. We see people hurting others to benefit themselves. Whether we're thinking about a coup in Niger,

  112. whether we're thinking about people traffickers and the tragedies happening in our seas,

  113. whether we have experience of the boss who acts as a slave driver. There are those who will use

  114. power and abuse power. He looks at a different aspect in verse 10, the celebration of wickedness

  115. in a community or a society. Then too I saw the wicked buried, those who used to come and go from

  116. the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. Here is a society that has rejected

  117. biblical wisdom that praises somebody who lives a wicked life for sure, perhaps, turning up to worship,

  118. but their wicked lives. But their wicked lives are known. The celebration of wickedness when what is wrong

  119. earns people's praise, when it earns the applause of a society. Whether that's the ruthless businessman

  120. who's approved of because he is making it in the world, whether that's art that pushes the boundaries

  121. of morality and is praised, wisdom cannot shield us from these kind of things. Verse 11 and 12,

  122. he moves on to think about the limit of wisdom in the face of slow justice and no justice.

  123. In verse 11, when the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, what happens? People's hearts

  124. are filled with schemes to do wrong. And we know this, don't we? There are times when people don't get

  125. what they deserve. There are times when it seems like in this world crime does pay, when laws are broken

  126. with no consequence, with the effect of the spreading of evil in people's hearts. Well, everybody else seems

  127. to be cheating the system and getting away with it, so why don't I? Unethical policies don't seem to

  128. disadvantage a business, so why don't we pursue that too? Verse 14 takes us perhaps to the greatest

  129. injustice that many of us wrestle with, maybe the most painful question. There is something else

  130. meaningless that occurs on earth. The righteous who get what the wicked deserve and the wicked who get

  131. what the righteous deserve. To ask the question, why do good things happen to bad people and why do bad

  132. things happen to bad people? Takes us to the voice of our preacher?

  133. And it can lead people to lament. You know, why bother being righteous? Why bother being obedient,

  134. looking to live by God's wisdom when my life turns out this way? I'm trying to follow God's wisdom.

  135. I expect things will look better than they are. And so the preacher wants us to see this limit that

  136. despite choosing wisdom, life can still be heartbreaking and we can still find ourselves being stepped on.

  137. This preacher is a gift to us, I think, because he confronts life with honesty. He doesn't settle for easy answers. He prompts us to think deeply.

  138. And I'm sure as we think along with the preacher that we can recognize these same limits. We can have that sense of

  139. vanity, that sense of life just being crooked and not right.

  140. And as we recognize that,

  141. we're all going to be, whether we're doing it deliberately or subconsciously, we're going to be choosing a response

  142. to God's wisdom in light of what we see

  143. in our world and in our lives.

  144. Maybe it's the response of frustration.

  145. I expected more from God's wisdom.

  146. I expected life would work out better

  147. as I try to live by God's wisdom.

  148. Perhaps

  149. there's a sense of relief.

  150. Well, it's all too hard to figure out anyway,

  151. so let me not even bother

  152. applying my mind.

  153. For some people

  154. in the modern world, there's simply

  155. a rejection of this idea that wisdom

  156. has limits.

  157. not for so many.

  158. All we need is a little bit more education.

  159. We can fix this.

  160. We can figure it out.

  161. We can make sense of life.

  162. We can end all that seems to be crooked.

  163. How should we choose to respond

  164. as we recognize that wisdom has limits

  165. in an unstable world?

  166. Well, what our preacher wants us to do,

  167. what God wants us to do,

  168. is to trust.

  169. That even still,

  170. God is on the throne.

  171. That God understands.

  172. That God will work all things together

  173. for good in the end.

  174. And that in Jesus,

  175. there is wisdom

  176. and there is life.

  177. And we should hold on to him

  178. as we face the limits

  179. and the instability

  180. of the world.

  181. So that takes us to

  182. our final point.

  183. And it says that even still,

  184. even knowing there are limits,

  185. we should choose

  186. the way of wisdom.

  187. wisdom.

  188. So having established these brackets

  189. that wisdom is good

  190. and wisdom comes with limits,

  191. let's look for his positive instruction

  192. because there is positive instruction

  193. in here

  194. that we should still choose wisdom

  195. as the better way to live.

  196. There are two different perspectives

  197. to help us to think about that.

  198. First of all,

  199. in verses 12 and 13,

  200. to consider the future.

  201. As we wonder,

  202. is it worth it

  203. to keep following God

  204. and his wisdom

  205. in the face of all the wickedness

  206. and injustice we see?

  207. Verse 12 and 13,

  208. Although a wicked person

  209. who commits a hundred crimes

  210. may live a long time,

  211. exaggeration to show

  212. seeming prosperity,

  213. I know

  214. that it will go better

  215. with those who fear God,

  216. who are reverent before him.

  217. Yet because the wicked

  218. do not fear God,

  219. it will not go well with them.

  220. In the face of the instability

  221. that we see,

  222. we need to learn

  223. to look to the future

  224. and to the God

  225. who holds the present

  226. and the future

  227. in his hands

  228. and to understand

  229. that in the end,

  230. the judge of all the earth

  231. will do right.

  232. That God's perfect,

  233. righteous justice

  234. will be exercised.

  235. One of the more helpful

  236. theologians on this topic

  237. is a chap called Miroslav Volf.

  238. He's a Croat

  239. and he lived through

  240. the Balkan Wars

  241. and so he has a lot

  242. of reflection

  243. on war

  244. and cycles

  245. of revenge

  246. and hatred.

  247. And so he finds himself

  248. thinking,

  249. what is the only way

  250. out of that cycle

  251. that gripped the Balkans

  252. in the 90s

  253. of violence

  254. and revenge?

  255. And for him as a Christian,

  256. he came to the conclusion

  257. the only thing,

  258. the only way to escape

  259. it gripping our hearts

  260. is to trust

  261. in the justice of God.

  262. To leave justice

  263. in God's hands.

  264. To learn to trust

  265. in ultimate justice

  266. even in the face

  267. of so much

  268. injustice

  269. in the present.

  270. And that makes sense

  271. especially

  272. in light of the New Testament

  273. and especially

  274. in light of

  275. Jesus' teaching.

  276. so much

  277. of Jesus' teaching

  278. focuses on that

  279. great reversal

  280. that takes place

  281. in the end.

  282. Maybe we remember

  283. the parable

  284. of the rich man

  285. and Lazarus.

  286. The rich man

  287. was living it up.

  288. The poor man

  289. Lazarus

  290. was laying at his gates.

  291. Dogs were licking

  292. his wounds.

  293. The rich man

  294. offered no help.

  295. Well,

  296. when they die,

  297. there's a great reversal.

  298. It's the rich man

  299. who's in torment

  300. and it's Lazarus

  301. who's in glory.

  302. Or the parable

  303. of the sheep

  304. and the goats

  305. and Jesus

  306. the judge.

  307. And in the end

  308. there is reward

  309. for those

  310. who live

  311. by God's wisdom.

  312. In the end

  313. justice

  314. is done.

  315. And so we trust

  316. in the God

  317. of justice.

  318. Especially in light

  319. of the gospel.

  320. We remember

  321. that Jesus

  322. on the cross

  323. has taken

  324. the judgment

  325. that we deserve.

  326. And by faith

  327. in him

  328. we live knowing

  329. that our verdict,

  330. God's verdict

  331. on our lives

  332. is already in.

  333. That we are

  334. not condemned.

  335. That we will

  336. be welcomed

  337. into glory.

  338. And so

  339. with Paul

  340. in Romans 8

  341. and verse 18

  342. we are able

  343. to say

  344. as those

  345. who trust

  346. in Jesus

  347. our present

  348. sufferings,

  349. the injustices,

  350. troubles of life

  351. are not worth

  352. comparing

  353. with glory

  354. to be revealed

  355. in us.

  356. But we need

  357. to live

  358. in light

  359. of eternity

  360. to have

  361. that perspective.

  362. so that

  363. we would

  364. still

  365. choose

  366. the way

  367. of God's

  368. wisdom

  369. to live

  370. in faith

  371. and obedience

  372. in an

  373. unpredictable

  374. world.

  375. So we need

  376. to consider

  377. the future

  378. but he also

  379. says

  380. that we need

  381. to consider

  382. how we live

  383. in the present.

  384. Verse 15

  385. we've heard him

  386. say this before

  387. so I commend

  388. the enjoyment

  389. of life

  390. because there

  391. is nothing

  392. better for a

  393. person under

  394. the sun

  395. than to eat

  396. and drink

  397. and be glad

  398. then joy

  399. will accompany

  400. them in their

  401. toil

  402. all the days

  403. of the life

  404. God has given

  405. them under

  406. the sun.

  407. He comes

  408. back to this

  409. so often

  410. in the face

  411. of all the

  412. difficulties

  413. all the apparent

  414. meaninglessness

  415. of life

  416. what do we

  417. choose?

  418. We choose

  419. to enjoy

  420. God

  421. and we

  422. choose

  423. to feast

  424. we choose

  425. to enjoy

  426. his everyday

  427. gifts and

  428. goodnesses

  429. and when we

  430. choose that

  431. when we

  432. choose

  433. contentment

  434. and joy

  435. in God

  436. and from

  437. God

  438. the preacher

  439. says that

  440. even those

  441. dark clouds

  442. of troubles

  443. will not

  444. completely

  445. block out

  446. the sunshine

  447. of God's

  448. love

  449. and God's

  450. goodness

  451. towards us

  452. so we

  453. recognize

  454. that there

  455. are limits

  456. and there

  457. is injustice

  458. but we also

  459. recognize that

  460. God is good

  461. and generous

  462. and we

  463. make sure

  464. to enjoy

  465. and to

  466. especially

  467. enjoy

  468. the greatest

  469. gift

  470. who of

  471. course

  472. is

  473. Jesus

  474. who is a

  475. source of

  476. eternal

  477. joy

  478. for his

  479. people

  480. unlike the

  481. kings that

  482. we meet

  483. in Ecclesiastes

  484. the kings

  485. that we meet

  486. in our day

  487. those in

  488. authority

  489. Jesus is the

  490. king we can

  491. trust completely

  492. he is never

  493. unpredictable

  494. he is never

  495. unfaithful

  496. we should

  497. obey

  498. stick closely

  499. to him

  500. and love

  501. and honor

  502. him

  503. in light of

  504. all the

  505. uncertainty

  506. about the

  507. times of

  508. our lives

  509. we are

  510. invited to

  511. trust in

  512. Jesus

  513. the Lord

  514. who gives

  515. us the

  516. promise of

  517. hope in

  518. life and

  519. in death

  520. and as we

  521. recognize that

  522. there is so

  523. much injustice

  524. we place

  525. ourselves

  526. in the

  527. hands of

  528. Jesus the

  529. judge

  530. who judges

  531. justly

  532. the one who

  533. suffered the

  534. just for

  535. the unjust

  536. to bring

  537. us to

  538. God

  539. so Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 8 chapter mention

  540. chapter 8

  541. is wisdom

  542. for real

  543. life

  544. it recognizes

  545. how often

  546. life can be

  547. unsettling

  548. but even

  549. as that is

  550. true

  551. still he

  552. insists that

  553. choosing God's

  554. way of wisdom

  555. still makes

  556. best sense

  557. choosing to

  558. follow Jesus

  559. who is the

  560. wisdom of

  561. God for us

  562. is still

  563. the best

  564. way to

  565. live

  566. that we

  567. would choose

  568. to walk

  569. with him

  570. today

  571. even as

  572. we'll sing

  573. in a moment

  574. even if we

  575. find ourselves

  576. walking in the

  577. valley

  578. that we

  579. would look

  580. to him

  581. as the

  582. ultimate

  583. hope and

  584. security

  585. for our

  586. lives

  587. so let's

  588. pray about

  589. that now

  590. let's pray

  591. Lord our

  592. God we

  593. recognize

  594. and confess

  595. that you

  596. established

  597. this world

  598. and it was

  599. very good

  600. but we can

  601. see so

  602. clearly the

  603. effect of

  604. sin in

  605. this world

  606. we recognize

  607. and acknowledge

  608. along with

  609. the preacher

  610. the brokenness

  611. the injustice

  612. the sorrow

  613. the confusion

  614. that can so

  615. often reign

  616. in our

  617. lives and

  618. seems to

  619. reign in

  620. our world

  621. Lord as we

  622. come to an

  623. end of

  624. ourselves

  625. where even

  626. as we seek

  627. to be

  628. faithful

  629. we find

  630. our plans

  631. thwarted

  632. we find

  633. ourselves

  634. disappointed

  635. and we

  636. live with

  637. fear

  638. Lord help

  639. us to

  640. keep on

  641. trusting

  642. in your

  643. way of

  644. wisdom

  645. for our

  646. lives

  647. help us

  648. to put

  649. our trust

  650. in Jesus

  651. our wise

  652. our good

  653. our gracious

  654. our just

  655. Lord and

  656. King

  657. so that we

  658. might enjoy

  659. everyday life

  660. recognizing your

  661. generosity

  662. towards us

  663. and we

  664. might also

  665. have hope

  666. as we

  667. consider

  668. our death

  669. and eternal

  670. realities

  671. so please

  672. help us

  673. that by your

  674. spirit you

  675. would keep

  676. applying your

  677. truth to

  678. our hearts

  679. and our

  680. lives

  681. that you

  682. would guide

  683. us in all

  684. wisdom we

  685. pray in

  686. Jesus name

  687. Amen

  688. so let's

  689. close by

  690. singing the

  691. hymn that

  692. we've been

  693. learning over

  694. the last few

  695. weeks in the

  696. valley bless

  697. the Lord and

  698. we can stand

  699. again as we're

  700. able to sing

  701. together

  702. when the

  703. path that I

  704. feared is

  705. the way

  706. he has

  707. said

  708. and I

  709. long

  710. to
