  1. Father, you know the real condition of our hearts.

  2. You know those amongst us who are struggling with anxiety,

  3. those of us who are actually feeling really good, really pumped.

  4. You know, Father, those of us who have a problem with cynicism.

  5. You know, Father, those of us who are struggling with doubts.

  6. You know those of us, Father, who are in fact maybe really feeling

  7. just very filled with faith and just delighting in you.

  8. Father, we give you thanks and praise that you know us perfectly,

  9. that your word speaks to all of the different conditions of our lives,

  10. and that, Father, you love us, that you care for us,

  11. and desire to have us come into your presence this morning,

  12. and that you desire to give to us,

  13. and we ask that you would help us to receive in a worthy manner.

  14. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  15. I'm still so conditioned, I almost wanted to say be seated,

  16. because if we were meeting in person,

  17. you would have all been standing from the creed,

  18. or most of you would have been,

  19. and then I'd have to tell you to be seated.

  20. Lots of people think that prayer is pretty weak,

  21. a little bit lame, maybe actually really deeply lame,

  22. and also more than a little bit boring.

  23. One of the things I guess in our culture is,

  24. you know, you look at something like yoga,

  25. or some of the other techniques in meditation that come out of the East,

  26. or suggested maybe by psychologists,

  27. those things seem to give you a real type of benefit,

  28. and they seem, yeah, they just seem interesting,

  29. as if they're going to build your power,

  30. and just seem like, because they give you more power, so to speak,

  31. and are just helpful.

  32. It seems like if there is any type of religion,

  33. or any type of spirituality,

  34. that's probably a better way to go,

  35. because frankly, for a lot of us,

  36. prayer just seems pretty weak,

  37. like you sit in silence,

  38. and you just speak in your head,

  39. and you talk to God,

  40. and it just doesn't seem to be,

  41. well, it seems to a lot of people

  42. that it's a bit lame.

  43. In fact, people probably sometimes wonder,

  44. maybe they wonder all the time,

  45. I know a lot of people would wonder about those who pray,

  46. how do you know you're actually talking to anyone,

  47. you're not just talking to yourself,

  48. and how does talking to yourself really do anything for you?

  49. Once again, it seems as if prayer is a problem.

  50. And in fact, for many Christians,

  51. we feel these same things,

  52. maybe we don't want to acknowledge it in public,

  53. or we have times when we feel with it,

  54. and that's on top of the fact that many of us say,

  55. not only does prayer just sometimes really seem like

  56. you're just sitting in a room all by yourself,

  57. talking to yourself,

  58. but it often seems for people as if prayer doesn't work,

  59. that they haven't had many experiences of prayer being answered,

  60. and if there was a prayer that seems to be answered,

  61. it's almost always able to be explained

  62. as some type of coincidence.

  63. So it's in this type of context

  64. that the book of James is going to talk about prayer.

  65. And in fact, for those of you who are watching

  66. or just trying to figure out the Christian faith,

  67. let me let you into a bit of a secret

  68. about your Christian friends,

  69. is that the text that we're about to read

  70. is actually a bit of a troublesome text

  71. to a lot of Christians,

  72. in that it touches on their cynicism and their doubt

  73. and their disappointment with God in the Christian life,

  74. because it seems to make very, very, very big claims

  75. which are hard to square with the experience

  76. of a lot of Christians.

  77. So let's walk towards the text.

  78. Let's see what it says.

  79. What we're going to do is we're going to read it sort of twice.

  80. It's a short text, only eight verses.

  81. I'm just going to go through it

  82. so you can just see once again

  83. what it is that it's saying,

  84. what it seems to be saying.

  85. Then we're just going to think about it a little bit

  86. in terms of some of these doubts, etc.

  87. And then we'll go back and we'll read it a second time

  88. sort of in light of having sort of,

  89. okay, those are the issue.

  90. Oh, it says that, really?

  91. Wow, it says that, really?

  92. And then we'll think about it,

  93. and then we'll go back and hear it a second time

  94. after we've thought a little bit

  95. about some of those issues of our heart,

  96. some of those issues of our mind

  97. that we bring to prayer,

  98. some of the context issues that we bring to prayer.

  99. So let's look.

  100. Just by the way,

  101. so it's going to be the book of James,

    James 5:13–20

  102. chapter 5, verses 13 to 20.

  103. The words will be on the screen,

  104. but I just want to really encourage you

  105. to get your own Bible

  106. and to follow along in your own Bible.

  107. That way, if the verse is missed,

  108. you can still look at the verse yourself.

  109. And it's also just good to get familiar

  110. with using your own Bible.

  111. And so I just encourage you to do that.

  112. And a little bit of a heads up

  113. to what we're doing next,

  114. because we preach through books of the Bible generally,

  115. not all the time, but generally.

  116. And so what we're actually doing

  117. is a bit of the both

  118. over the next weeks and months ahead.

  119. We're going to look at the Ten Commandments next week.

  120. Daniel's going to lead us in that.

  121. We're going to look at the Lord's Prayer.

  122. Daniel's going to lead us in that.

  123. Then we're going to go through the book of Haggai,

  124. a prophet in the Old Testament,

  125. what our Jewish friends call the Tanakh.

  126. Then we're going to do a summer series

  127. called Knowing God,

  128. looking at some of the main attributes of God,

  129. why that is actually very, very, very good news

  130. for us to know who God is,

  131. because he desires us to know him.

  132. And then we're going to start in the fall,

  133. we're going to look at the Gospel of Mark.

  134. It's going to be called Simply Jesus.

  135. And we'll start looking at the Gospel of Mark.

  136. That's where we're headed.

  137. But right now we're going to look at James.

  138. So let's see what it says.

  139. And it starts like this, chapter 5, verse 13.

  140. Is anyone among you suffering?

  141. Let him pray.

  142. Is anyone cheerful?

  143. Let him sing praise.

  144. Just pause very briefly on that.

  145. The word suffering there is really,

  146. I mean, it is suffering.

  147. It also basically would be,

  148. another way to understand the word would be hardship.

  149. Some of your translations,

  150. if you're not using the same one as mine,

  151. might say that.

  152. So it's basically,

  153. if you're going through a hard time,

  154. whatever that is,

  155. and often hard times are also times when we suffer,

  156. the advice is to pray.

  157. If you're feeling really pumped,

  158. if this morning you're thinking,

  159. gosh, you know, I got in a 15K run this morning,

  160. you know, I had my yogurt and my hemp hearts

  161. and my blueberries and bananas

  162. and just feeling pumped,

  163. looking forward to the afternoon,

  164. well, the recommendation here is to sing praise.

  165. The heart of both of these, by the way,

  166. is that whether we sing words

  167. or say words,

  168. that a key part of prayer

  169. is speaking to the triune God with words.

  170. That's what's being recommended.

  171. And it's really trying to say,

  172. listen, from the worst times in your life

  173. to the best times in your life,

  174. there's a way to speak to God.

  175. And he wants to, in a sense,

  176. I can't remember who said it,

  177. he wants to make holy your down times

  178. and he wants to make holy your good times.

  179. He wants to hallow your suffering

  180. and sanctify your joy.

  181. And so that's what it's saying.

  182. And then in verse 14, it says,

  183. and so that's not as problematic.

  184. The word bit is a bit problematic.

  185. The fact that prayer,

  186. it's the emphasis is not on trying

  187. to create certain experiences,

  188. but to use words to talk to God.

  189. But it's going to get into it more deeply,

  190. some of the problematic issues of prayer.

  191. Other than once again,

  192. the Bible doesn't teach yoga

  193. or meditative techniques per se.

  194. It emphasizes a conversation

  195. with the triune God.

  196. Verse 14,

  197. is anyone among you sick?

  198. That word also can be translated

  199. as weak, by the way,

  200. in a very, very weakened,

  201. diminished situation.

  202. Is anyone among you sick?

  203. Let him call for the elders of the church

  204. and let them pray over him or her,

  205. anointing him or her with oil

  206. in the name of the Lord.

  207. And just, it's a whole other

  208. big topic of sermons.

  209. In the Church of the Messiah,

  210. we come out of the English Reformation.

  211. And so in our polity,

  212. that's the way churches are structured,

  213. I'm an elder.

  214. And now you might look at me and say,

  215. well, that fits, George,

  216. because you look really, really,

  217. really, really old.

  218. But I got ordained

  219. as a transitional deacon

  220. when I was 28.

  221. And just a couple of months

  222. after I turned 29,

  223. I was ordained an elder.

  224. Back then, I was young.

  225. And so it doesn't refer to age,

  226. it's an office.

  227. And in Church of the Messiah,

  228. there are three people

  229. who are elders,

  230. myself, Daniel Avitan,

  231. who was just here,

  232. and Sean Turner.

  233. And hopefully,

  234. in the providence of God,

  235. I mean, Jonathan Kamiri from,

  236. anyway, I won't go any further in it,

  237. but we're elders.

  238. But the thing in here,

  239. which is very, very interesting,

  240. by the way,

  241. is, yeah, anyway,

  242. so we're the elders.

  243. So here the command is

  244. to call the elders of the church

  245. to anoint with oil

  246. and to pray.

  247. Verse 15,

  248. And the prayer of faith

  249. will save the one who is sick,

  250. and the Lord will raise him up,

  251. and if he has committed sins,

  252. he will be forgiven.

  253. I'll say it again.

  254. And the prayer of faith

  255. will save the one who is sick,

  256. and the Lord will raise him up,

  257. and if he has committed sins,

  258. he will be forgiven.

  259. This is,

  260. we're starting to get into

  261. this hard part of the verse.

  262. You know, the above stuff

  263. is sort of a bit,

  264. you might say it's harmless.

  265. Well, it can't really do any harm

  266. if you sit in a room

  267. and just talk to yourself.

  268. You know, it's still not as exciting

  269. as yoga,

  270. or it doesn't seem

  271. intuitively plausible to us,

  272. because yoga

  273. and meditative techniques

  274. have a,

  275. in our culture,

  276. have a type of plausibility

  277. about them

  278. that merely talking

  279. to the triune God

  280. and invisible God

  281. doesn't have.

  282. But here it goes,

  283. here's where we get

  284. into problems.

  285. I know for a fact

  286. that there are people of,

  287. I mean,

  288. I've had friends die

  289. over the last couple of weeks.

  290. I know there are people

  291. who are part of the congregation

  292. who've had

  293. a very close loved one died,

  294. and probably thousands

  295. of people praying for him.

  296. And there are people

  297. who are part of our congregation

  298. who have prayed for children

  299. and not been able

  300. to receive children.

  301. And I mean,

  302. I've prayed and prayed

  303. and prayed and prayed

  304. and prayed about it.

  305. There are many

  306. who would just long

  307. to be married

  308. and worry that they're

  309. going to be single forever

  310. and have prayed

  311. and prayed and prayed

  312. into it.

  313. There are those

  314. who've had marriages

  315. seem to break up,

  316. those who have struggled

  317. with different types

  318. of addictions

  319. or alcoholism.

  320. And so to hear

  321. a verse like this

  322. for many of us

  323. is very hard

  324. to hear.

  325. And we're going to talk

  326. about this again

  327. more in a moment.

  328. The first part

  329. of verse 16,

  330. therefore confess

  331. your sins to one another

  332. and pray for one another

  333. that you may be healed.

  334. Just sort of want you

  335. to notice there

  336. the pattern of all the verses.

  337. I'm not going to say

  338. much more about it

  339. than this,

  340. is that at the beginning

  341. I pray for me,

  342. and then the next part,

  343. in a sense,

  344. the leadership of the church

  345. is asked to come

  346. and pray for me,

  347. and here the whole congregation

  348. is asked to pray for me.

  349. And that's sort of it,

  350. so it's not as,

  351. like, in a sense,

  352. there's this big call

  353. to prayer,

  354. both you as an individual,

  355. for my own needs,

  356. for me as an individual

  357. to pray for the needs

  358. of others,

  359. and for the church

  360. as the church

  361. to pray into particular

  362. types of needs.

  363. Then the second part

  364. of verse 16,

  365. the prayer of a righteous person

  366. has great power

  367. in its working.

  368. Elijah was a man

  369. with a nature like ours,

  370. and he prayed fervently

  371. that it might not rain.

  372. And for three years

  373. and six months

  374. it did not rain on the earth.

  375. Then he prayed again,

  376. and heaven gave rain,

  377. and the earth bore its fruit.

  378. And some of us

  379. will read this,

  380. and this is actually

  381. a really important verse,

  382. which we're going to spend

  383. a bit more time on later.

  384. But one of the things,

  385. the way that James introduces

  386. this is very interesting.

  387. If you don't know much

  388. about Elijah,

  389. one of the things

  390. I can tell you about Elijah

  391. is that even though

  392. he had periods

  393. of great success,

  394. and to many of us,

  395. like unbelievable

  396. answer to prayers,

  397. he also had a time

  398. of deep fear,

  399. he had a time

  400. of deep despair,

  401. and his despair

  402. was so deep

  403. that he asked God

  404. to kill him.

  405. So in other words,

  406. this isn't like

  407. somebody who's like

  408. always pumped,

  409. always doing his best,

  410. like always at a thousand percent,

  411. his RPMs are always,

  412. going full bore,

  413. and he's just flying

  414. through life

  415. and through experience.

  416. This is a man

  417. who struggled

  418. with human fear

  419. and who struggled

  420. with despair,

  421. even to the point

  422. of a season

  423. where he was praying

  424. that God

  425. would end his life.

  426. And James is saying,

  427. this guy has

  428. the same nature

  429. as you and me.

  430. And there's a bit

  431. of a debate

  432. about how to pray this,

  433. how to translate

  434. this word fervently,

  435. but it literally means

  436. he prayed with prayer.

  437. That's what it literally means,

  438. he prayed with prayer.

  439. And it could take,

  440. it could be something

  441. to show a type

  442. of intensity,

  443. but it also could be used

  444. as a type of emphasis

  445. that he prayed with prayer.

  446. And it's important

  447. because for many of us,

  448. we might say,

  449. well, that's,

  450. you know,

  451. there's these Elijah guys,

  452. there's these George guys

  453. and Daniel guys,

  454. and you know,

  455. I don't know,

  456. they pray

  457. and all these things

  458. happen.

  459. Somebody just,

  460. I was chatting

  461. with some street people

  462. the other day

  463. and one of them,

  464. one of them asked me

  465. to pray for them

  466. and I said,

  467. sure,

  468. I'll pray for you,

  469. but I want you to know

  470. that I'm in sales,

  471. not management.

  472. And I knew that

  473. one of the street people

  474. with them

  475. was a Christian

  476. and he's a really neat

  477. Christian who panhandles

  478. so he can buy coffee

  479. for street people,

  480. not so he'll buy cigarettes,

  481. not so he'll get drugs

  482. or alcohol.

  483. He literally,

  484. he panhandles

  485. so he can be generous

  486. to the other street people

  487. and engage them

  488. in conversation

  489. and I said to this person,

  490. I said,

  491. this guy's probably

  492. closer to management

  493. than I am,

  494. I'm just in sales

  495. and they all laughed.

  496. But the emphasis here

  497. is to deal a little bit

  498. with our cynicism

  499. is think about the fact

  500. that Elijah struggled

  501. with depression,

  502. he struggled with despair,

  503. he wanted to die,

  504. he has the same nature

  505. as you and me,

  506. God did a remarkable thing

  507. at least sometimes

  508. with Elijah's prayer.

  509. By the way,

  510. to Elijah's prayer

  511. that he would die,

  512. God said no.

  513. God said no.

  514. Then just to sort of,

  515. just so we can see

  516. the rest of it,

  517. verse 19 to 20,

  518. my brothers and sisters,

  519. if anyone among you

  520. wanders from the truth

  521. and someone brings him back,

  522. let him know

  523. that whoever brings back

  524. a sinner from his wandering

  525. will save his soul

  526. from death

  527. and will cover

  528. a multitude of sins.

  529. So we see a bit of it,

  530. we're back to the problem,

  531. the weakness of prayer,

  532. its lameness,

  533. the fact that it doesn't work

  534. and the fact that really

  535. in our culture,

  536. things like yoga

  537. and a range of other

  538. meditative techniques

  539. have an inherent plausibility

  540. and attractiveness to them

  541. that just simply talking

  542. to the triune God

  543. just doesn't seem to have

  544. as being something

  545. that seems intuitively

  546. as the way

  547. to move forward

  548. in whatever this real world is.

  549. And so I'm going to say

  550. several things about this.

  551. First of all,

  552. if you met a human being

  553. that could not hear

  554. and could not speak,

  555. would you say that

  556. that human being,

  557. I'm going to get in trouble here

  558. about differently abled

  559. and I,

  560. you know,

  561. the fact that,

  562. just listen to me

  563. with this analogy.

  564. I mean,

  565. part of the great brilliance

  566. of the Christian faith

  567. which is being lost

  568. is that every human being

  569. is made in the image of God

  570. and has a dignity

  571. and worth and value

  572. which the state does not give

  573. but states will be judged

  574. by God

  575. as to whether they recognize

  576. the inherent dignity

  577. of every human being

  578. no matter how handicapped,

  579. including the pre-born.

  580. and so don't jump on me on this

  581. but I just want to,

  582. just be honest for a second, okay?

  583. Check your outrage.

  584. Just be honest.

  585. If you meet a human being

  586. that has literally lost

  587. the entire ability

  588. to speak and to hear,

  589. would you think they are

  590. in a sense above you

  591. or below you?

  592. Like in other words,

  593. I mean,

  594. we can look at somebody

  595. who's very brilliant

  596. and wish we could be

  597. as smart as them.

  598. We can look at somebody

  599. who is really funny

  600. and wish we were funny like them.

  601. We can look at somebody

  602. who's unbelievably athletic

  603. and wish that we were

  604. athletic as them.

  605. Would we look at that person

  606. and wish that we were like them?

  607. Well, if we're honest,

  608. we'd say no.

  609. In fact,

  610. in Canadian culture,

  611. you'd say they were a candidate

  612. for euthanasia

  613. because you'd probably say

  614. they don't have any quality of life.

  615. Let's just be honest.

  616. In Canada,

  617. you would say

  618. they don't have a quality of life

  619. and they are the type of person

  620. that doctors should be allowed to kill.

  621. But what about

  622. if you met a human being

  623. and this,

  624. from the time they were a baby

  625. to now,

  626. they've actually had

  627. no brain activity.

  628. And so even the very,

  629. very ability to speak,

  630. like, you know,

  631. because speaking,

  632. you could see somebody

  633. who doesn't have the ability

  634. to speak and can't hear

  635. and you could think

  636. part of what you might think

  637. is that it's so sad

  638. there's a brain,

  639. a person in there

  640. sort of trapped.

  641. And how can you get in touch

  642. with that?

  643. But if you met somebody

  644. and in fact,

  645. the brain

  646. doesn't work at all.

  647. And so it's not just

  648. that they can't speak

  649. and that they can't listen,

  650. but that even if

  651. somehow or another

  652. magically it could work,

  653. there'd be no one there

  654. in a sense

  655. to speak.

  656. Now, would you think

  657. they were greater than you

  658. or less than you?

  659. Would you wish

  660. that you could be like them?

  661. No, once again,

  662. you would say,

  663. I don't even know

  664. why they've kept

  665. somebody like that alive.

  666. That would be

  667. obviously a person

  668. that they should have

  669. turned off the plug

  670. if not turning off

  671. the plug didn't kill them.

  672. They're obviously

  673. a candidate

  674. for so-called

  675. assisted suicide,

  676. which is really

  677. just euthanasia.

  678. So the reason I'm asking

  679. all of this is that

  680. if that's how we view

  681. human beings,

  682. why is it

  683. that a God

  684. that cannot speak

  685. and a God

  686. that cannot hear

  687. and a God,

  688. a conception of God,

  689. that actually

  690. it's not even within

  691. that God's capability

  692. to speak or hear,

  693. how on earth

  694. could that be God?

  695. And I'm using

  696. the word that.

  697. like,

  698. but that's

  699. the God

  700. of the East.

  701. That's the God

  702. of yoga.

  703. That's the God

  704. of meditation.

  705. Like,

  706. why would you

  707. worship a God

  708. like that?

  709. Why would you even

  710. want to connect

  711. with it?

  712. Like,

  713. how does that fit?

  714. Why is that

  715. plausible to you?

  716. Well,

  717. let's ask

  718. another question.

  719. In fact,

  720. we'll just,

  721. see,

  722. here's the thing

  723. about the gospel.

  724. What does the gospel

  725. reveal?

  726. How is the true

  727. God revealed?

  728. He's revealed

  729. in the person

  730. of Jesus.

  731. That's the Christian

  732. teaching.

  733. If you go back

  734. and you read John,

  735. you'll see that

  736. John says that

  737. Jesus is the one

  738. who perfectly

  739. reveals God.

  740. The personal

  741. God is revealed

  742. in the person

  743. of Jesus.

  744. The God

  745. that does exist

  746. that what we

  747. Christians believe

  748. since we accept

  749. what Jesus has said

  750. is the God

  751. who speaks.

  752. The God

  753. who can listen.

  754. Shouldn't that be,

  755. even if you don't

  756. believe a God

  757. like that exists,

  758. shouldn't you wish

  759. that a God

  760. like that exists?

  761. And shouldn't you

  762. say,

  763. wouldn't you,

  764. isn't it more

  765. reasonable to say,

  766. why on earth

  767. am I actually

  768. trying to connect

  769. to a God

  770. that's less

  771. than a human being?

  772. That's,

  773. that in fact,

  774. if we met

  775. that God

  776. as a person,

  777. we'd think

  778. that God

  779. should die

  780. to be put out

  781. of its misery.

  782. Jesus spoke,

  783. he loved,

  784. he died,

  785. he reveals

  786. the real God.

  787. Isn't this far better?

  788. Or what about

  789. if you had a God

  790. who for eons

  791. and eons

  792. and eons

  793. from all eternity

  794. was completely

  795. and utterly

  796. solitary?

  797. Completely

  798. and utterly

  799. solitary,

  800. just that God

  801. existed.

  802. And because

  803. just God

  804. exists,

  805. if God

  806. only exists,

  807. I guess he

  808. could talk

  809. to himself,

  810. but he can't

  811. really talk

  812. to anybody

  813. else.

  814. And,

  815. you know,

  816. when you meet

  817. a person,

  818. like,

  819. we're just

  820. off of that,

  821. we're in the

  822. ministry spaces

  823. in the downtown

  824. part of Ottawa,

  825. where we worship

  826. on Sunday mornings

  827. as part of the

  828. Urban Corps

  829. of Ottawa.

  830. Let me tell you,

  831. there's all sorts

  832. of people

  833. that are around

  834. here.

  835. I see people

  836. every day

  837. who can only

  838. talk to themselves

  839. but cannot

  840. talk to human

  841. beings.

  842. And nobody,

  843. nobody thinks

  844. that's the way

  845. to go for your

  846. future.

  847. But what if you

  848. have a God

  849. that can maybe

  850. talk,

  851. but he can only

  852. talk to himself

  853. and then all of a

  854. sudden he decides

  855. to create other

  856. beings and then

  857. he has beings

  858. that he talks

  859. to?

  860. Well,

  861. I mean,

  862. I'm describing

  863. the God of,

  864. I just described

  865. Allah.

  866. Well,

  867. how is that

  868. like a God

  869. that we'd want

  870. to actually

  871. hope exists?

  872. Like,

  873. doesn't there seem

  874. like there's

  875. something wrong

  876. with that

  877. conception of

  878. God?

  879. I know I'm

  880. being very

  881. un-Canadian

  882. challenging our

  883. conceptions,

  884. but listen,

  885. don't we all

  886. want as

  887. individuals to

  888. not live

  889. unexamined lives?

  890. Don't we

  891. look down on

  892. people who

  893. live mindless,

  894. shallow,

  895. unquestioning,

  896. unexamined

  897. lives?

  898. And since

  899. that's the

  900. case,

  901. and I'm

  902. fine,

  903. I get

  904. challenged

  905. all the

  906. time on

  907. my Christian

  908. faith,

  909. all the

  910. time.

  911. So,

  912. for those

  913. of us

  914. who think

  915. yoga is

  916. more plausible,

  917. for those

  918. of us

  919. who think

  920. Allah is

  921. more

  922. plausible,

  923. well,

  924. really,

  925. is it?

  926. Have we

  927. examined

  928. what it

  929. means to

  930. have such

  931. a God

  932. like this?

  933. And once

  934. again,

  935. the Christian

  936. God who

  937. Jesus reveals

  938. is completely

  939. and utterly

  940. different from

  941. the God,

  942. the triune

  943. God.

  944. The God

  945. that's revealed

  946. by Jesus

  947. is that

  948. Jesus is

  949. God,

  950. the Son of

  951. God,

  952. that from

  953. all eternity,

  954. the Father

  955. and the Son

  956. loved each

  957. other,

  958. the Holy Spirit

  959. loved the

  960. Father and

  961. loved the

  962. Son,

  963. the Son

  964. loved the

  965. Holy Spirit

  966. and the

  967. Father.

  968. There is,

  969. in a sense,

  970. communication,

  971. there was

  972. revelation from

  973. all eternity.

  974. And God,

  975. who is the

  976. Father, the

  977. Son, and the

  978. Holy Spirit,

  979. three persons,

  980. one God,

  981. he creates

  982. human beings

  983. in his image.

  984. And so he

  985. doesn't just

  986. create George,

  987. the lone

  988. human,

  989. in a

  990. completely and

  991. utterly non-human

  992. world.

  993. He creates

  994. George and

  995. Andrew and

  996. Rebecca and

  997. Louise and

  998. you and

  999. Matt and

  1000. Daniel and

  1001. Jono and

  1002. Claire.

  1003. He creates

  1004. human beings.

  1005. He creates

  1006. human beings to

  1007. reveal themselves,

  1008. to know

  1009. themselves, to

  1010. know each

  1011. other, to

  1012. communicate.

  1013. It all

  1014. fits.

  1015. Shouldn't a

  1016. God like that

  1017. be far more

  1018. plausible?

  1019. Even if you

  1020. can't believe

  1021. that a God

  1022. like that

  1023. does exist,

  1024. shouldn't you

  1025. begin to

  1026. long that

  1027. such a God

  1028. like that

  1029. exists?

  1030. I mean, I

  1031. have good

  1032. news for

  1033. you.

  1034. That longing

  1035. will be a

  1036. longing that

  1037. comes to

  1038. fruition when

  1039. you give

  1040. your heart

  1041. and your

  1042. mind and

  1043. your life

  1044. to Jesus.

  1045. Jesus

  1046. reveals God,

  1047. and he

  1048. reveals God

  1049. not only by

  1050. living a

  1051. perfect life,

  1052. suffering the

  1053. trials and

  1054. temptations,

  1055. the weaknesses

  1056. that we do

  1057. only without

  1058. sin, but he

  1059. loves us to

  1060. the point of

  1061. dying for

  1062. us, to

  1063. reconcile you

  1064. to God.

  1065. God doesn't

  1066. just reveal

  1067. himself as

  1068. big, chest

  1069. thumping,

  1070. look at me,

  1071. I'm great.

  1072. I mean, he

  1073. is great, but

  1074. he reveals

  1075. himself in

  1076. lowliness by

  1077. dying.

  1078. You know, all

  1079. of the idols

  1080. and all of

  1081. the gods of

  1082. the world,

  1083. they all have

  1084. one characteristic,

  1085. others die

  1086. for them.

  1087. Marxism, others

  1088. die for them,

  1089. ideologies as

  1090. well, ideologies,

  1091. all the gods,

  1092. others die for

  1093. the God or

  1094. the gods.

  1095. Christianity,

  1096. completely and

  1097. utterly unique.

  1098. It is the

  1099. story of God

  1100. coming among

  1101. us to die

  1102. for us

  1103. because he

  1104. loves you

  1105. and me.

  1106. In fact, what

  1107. is one of the

  1108. names of

  1109. Jesus?

  1110. The first

  1111. name that

  1112. is given

  1113. to him is

  1114. Emmanuel, God

  1115. with us, with

  1116. us in our

  1117. mess, with

  1118. us in our

  1119. joys, with

  1120. us in our

  1121. sorrows.

  1122. He is

  1123. Emmanuel, God

  1124. with us.

  1125. But some of

  1126. you might say,

  1127. George, but

  1128. prayer doesn't

  1129. work.

  1130. Listen, I can

  1131. tell you of the

  1132. times I've

  1133. prayed and it

  1134. just doesn't

  1135. work.

  1136. Christians and

  1137. non-Christians

  1138. can tell me

  1139. that.

  1140. A couple of

  1141. weeks ago I

  1142. wrote a blog.

  1143. You can look

  1144. at it.

  1145. It's called

  1146. Amnesia and

  1147. Prayer.

  1148. I talk about

  1149. God dramatically

  1150. answering a

  1151. prayer request

  1152. of mine that

  1153. I thought was

  1154. impossible, but

  1155. I was praying

  1156. out of obedience.

  1157. I talk a few

  1158. other things about

  1159. how he answers

  1160. prayer or not.

  1161. I suggest you

  1162. go read it.

  1163. I just want to

  1164. sort of double

  1165. down on the

  1166. particular issue.

  1167. Some of you

  1168. have heard this

  1169. story before, but

  1170. it's a good

  1171. story and I'll

  1172. tell it again.

1173. I used to be in

  1174. a rural church.

  1175. I looked after

  1176. four little

  1177. congregations.

  1178. I can't remember

1179. if it was July or

  1180. August.

  1181. It doesn't matter.

  1182. It was the

  1183. summer.

  1184. And the way

  1185. Anglican

  1186. churches work,

  1187. especially when

  1188. you're the only

  1189. elder in the

  1190. congregation at

  1191. that particular

  1192. time, if you

  1193. go on holidays,

  1194. you get another

  1195. person to cover

  1196. for emergencies

  1197. for you.

  1198. So the priest in

  1199. a small village

  1200. or small city

  1201. about half an

  1202. hour away from

  1203. where I lived,

  1204. he was on

  1205. holidays.

  1206. He asked me to

  1207. cover for him.

  1208. I agreed.

  1209. So at about

  1210. 7.30 in the

  1211. morning on a

  1212. Sunday morning, I

  1213. get a call from

  1214. the hospital.

  1215. And the call from

  1216. the hospital is

  1217. that Bob, we'll

  1218. call him Bob,

  1219. is dying.

  1220. He's been in

  1221. a coma for

  1222. several days.

  1223. They've turned

  1224. off the machines.

  1225. He's going to

  1226. die any second,

  1227. literally any

  1228. second.

  1229. His daughter is

  1230. with him and

  1231. his daughter has

  1232. asked that a

  1233. priest would come

  1234. and you're the

  1235. one.

  1236. Would you come

  1237. and just give

  1238. him his last

  1239. rites and pray

  1240. over him?

  1241. He's going to

  1242. die any moment.

  1243. Can you come

  1244. right away?

  1245. And I said,

  1246. listen, I'm

  1247. really, really

  1248. sorry.

  1249. I have to drive

  1250. all the way to

  1251. Killaloo, which

  1252. is half an hour

  1253. the other way.

  1254. Tremor, not

  1255. Killaloo.

  1256. Tremor, half an

  1257. hour the wrong

  1258. way.

  1259. I have to do

  1260. a service there

  1261. at 9 o'clock

  1262. and after that

  1263. I have another

  1264. service here in

  1265. Eganville at

  1266. 11 o'clock.

  1267. There's nobody

  1268. to take the

  1269. services.

  1270. There's nothing

  1271. I can do.

  1272. I'm really, really

  1273. sorry.

  1274. And the nurse

  1275. put all of her

  1276. manipulative

  1277. pressure she

  1278. could on me.

  1279. This guy is

  1280. dying.

  1281. His daughter

  1282. is distraught.

  1283. He's not going

  1284. to last.

  1285. He won't be

  1286. alive at 1230.

  1287. I can guarantee

  1288. it he won't be

  1289. alive at 1230

  1290. the early one

  1291. when you can

  1292. come.

  1293. I say, listen,

  1294. I have to do

  1295. the services.

  1296. I'm really, really

  1297. sorry.

  1298. I will call

  1299. you as soon

  1300. as I finish

  1301. my Eganville

  1302. service and

  1303. then I will

  1304. drive.

  1305. If he's still

  1306. alive, I will

  1307. drive the

  1308. half hour and

  1309. I'll go see

  1310. the daughter

  1311. and the man.

  1312. And so I

  1313. finish my

  1314. services.

  1315. I get on

  1316. the phone.

  1317. Yes, he's

  1318. still hanging

  1319. in there.

  1320. She'd still

  1321. really like it

  1322. if you could

  1323. come.

  1324. So my wife

  1325. had made me

  1326. a sandwich and

  1327. a coffee.

  1328. I get in the

  1329. car.

  1330. I drive there.

  1331. I come and

  1332. I see this

  1333. guy, Bob, in

  1334. the hospital bed.

  1335. And the

  1336. daughter was

  1337. understood that

  1338. I had the

  1339. services.

  1340. I couldn't

  1341. come.

  1342. She was

  1343. really glad

  1344. that God

  1345. had kept

  1346. her dad

  1347. alive long

  1348. enough that

  1349. I could be

  1350. with them.

  1351. So, I mean,

  1352. part of what

  1353. you're going to

  1354. learn from this

  1355. text in James,

  1356. which is really

  1357. powerful, I

  1358. didn't bring oil

  1359. with me, but I

  1360. said, is it

  1361. all right if I

  1362. touch your dad's

  1363. hand?

  1364. And as I'm

  1365. talking to the

  1366. daughter, I

  1367. touch Bob's

  1368. hand, put my

  1369. hand on his

  1370. hand, and I

  1371. put my hand on

  1372. his shoulder,

  1373. talking over

  1374. Bob to the

  1375. daughter a

  1376. little bit about

  1377. Bob and what

  1378. was going on

  1379. in his life.

  1380. And, you know,

  1381. one of the

  1382. things which this

  1383. text is so

  1384. important about is

  1385. touching the

  1386. person, by the

  1387. way, even if it's

  1388. not with anointing,

  1389. right?

  1390. It's one of the

  1391. things which is so

  1392. brilliant about

  1393. James 5, it would

  1394. be a whole other

  1395. sermon, is how it

  1396. respects the dignity

  1397. of the person, that

  1398. what you see in

  1399. this, all this

  1400. talk of prayer in

  1401. the elders, is that

  1402. the person's not

  1403. alone, that there's

  1404. a community involved,

  1405. that there's no

  1406. isolation, that the

  1407. person isn't treated

  1408. like a machine, that

1409. you just sort of try to

  1410. plug things into and

  1411. make a readout, and

1412. then you just sort of

  1413. throw things in or

  1414. cut things open, but

  1415. they have sins, they

  1416. have anxieties, they

  1417. have community, they

  1418. have all these things,

  1419. they need touch, they

  1420. need to be spoken

  1421. about, all these things

  1422. are there in this

  1423. text.

1424. This is not a crazy,

1425. this is a text that

  1426. Canadian medicine

  1427. continues to need to

  1428. learn from, that

  1429. human beings aren't

  1430. machines, that we

  1431. have anxieties, and

  1432. we have things that

  1433. trouble us, and I

  1434. remember going to

  1435. visit a guy, he

  1436. was, this is early

  1437. on, and he was

  1438. deeply troubled, he

1439. was in the last three

1440. or four months of his

  1441. life, and he was

  1442. deeply troubled about

  1443. the things he had

  1444. done as a paratrooper

  1445. in the Second World

  1446. War, and that's what

1447. he wanted to talk to

  1448. me about as the

  1449. elder.

  1450. The profound

  1451. trouble that he had

  1452. in the Second World

1453. War, and what he had

  1454. done.

  1455. Anyway, back to the

  1456. story of Bob.

1457. So it comes time to

1458. pray, I said, can you

1459. hold your hand, I say

  1460. to the daughter, can

1461. you hold, we make like

1462. we all held hands, and

  1463. I prayed like I always

  1464. pray in those situations

1465. as I learned to pray.

  1466. You know what I said, I

  1467. said, I prayed, Father,

  1468. Father, I don't know

1469. right now if Bob can

1470. hear us, but I know

1471. that whether or not he

1472. can hear us, that you

1473. can minister to him and

1474. speak to him right now,

  1475. wherever he is,

  1476. underneath the coma and

  1477. the unresponsiveness, you

1478. can meet with him and you

1479. can speak with him, and

1480. Father, we ask that Jesus

1481. would come to him right

1482. now and minister to him

1483. in whatever is going on

  1484. in his life.

1485. And I ask, Father, that

  1486. Jesus would minister to

1487. him, that if this is

1488. his time to die, that

  1489. Jesus will minister to

1490. him so that he is ready

  1491. to meet you.

  1492. I said, Father, if it's

1493. your will that you heal

1494. this man, I ask that you

  1495. heal this man.

  1496. Then I prayed another

1497. couple of things, and I

  1498. said, in Jesus' name,

1499. amen, and Bob said to

1500. me, thank you very much,

  1501. I really appreciate

  1502. that.

1503. The man in the coma

  1504. said that to me.

1505. As I prayed, he came

  1506. out of the coma.

1507. Now, listen, I can tell

1508. you two or three other

  1509. stories, not quite as

1510. dramatic as that, where I

1511. have gone to administer the

  1512. last rites.

1513. I always pray for physical

  1514. healing.

1515. I always pray that they

1516. will be ready to meet

  1517. Jesus.

  1518. I always pray that there'd

1519. be inner type of healing,

1520. and I can tell you there

1521. are several people that I

  1522. have prayed for.

1523. When I have talked to the

  1524. family that the doctors

1525. were right, they have to

  1526. disconnect all of the

1527. machines, and I have had

  1528. different people that I

1529. have prayed for like that,

1530. and they went on like this

1531. fellow to live three, four,

  1532. five more years.

1533. I've had many people that

1534. that didn't happen to as

  1535. well.

  1536. Probably the majority.

  1537. They died.

1538. What this text is talking

1539. about, and this is one of

1540. the reasons you want to

1541. look at the blog as well.

1542. See, one of the things is

1543. that when you pray, Jesus

1544. teaches us to pray, your

  1545. will be done.

  1546. That's actually in the

  1547. Lord's Prayer.

  1548. Did you notice that?

1549. Our Father who art in

  1550. heaven, hallowed be thy

  1551. name.

  1552. Thy kingdom come, thy

1553. will be done on earth as

  1554. it is in heaven.

1555. And Jesus, when he was in

  1556. the Garden of Gethsemane,

1557. and he knows that he's

1558. going to be captured in an

1559. hour or so, he knows he's

1560. going to be humiliated, he's

1561. going to be beaten, he's

1562. going to be whipped, he's

1563. going to die on a cross, and

1564. he's going to die naked on

1565. a cross, and he says, Father,

1566. if it's possible, take this

  1567. cup far from me.

1568. But not my will, but yours

  1569. be done.

1570. And of course, God answers

1571. Jesus' prayer not by saying,

1572. yes, I'm going to save you

  1573. all that bother.

1574. He answers his prayer by, no,

1575. you are going to go ahead and

  1576. die.

1577. See, God still answered Jesus'

1578. prayer, he just didn't answer

  1579. it with a yes.

1580. That, by the way, that story of

1581. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

  1582. is a profound comfort.

  1583. But it's not a profound

1584. comfort if you don't know

1585. Jesus as your Savior and

  1586. Lord.

1587. See, remember when I told you

1588. that one of the things which

1589. is uniquely different about the

1590. Christian faith than all other

1591. faiths is that all of the

1592. gods of the world have people

  1593. die for them.

1594. The ideologies of the world

1595. have people die for them.

1596. The rich have people die for

  1597. them.

1598. In the Christian faith, the God

  1599. is revealed in Jesus.

1600. Only there does God not say,

1601. I want you to die for me, but

1602. he says, I'm going to die for

  1603. you.

1604. For God so loved the world that

1605. he gave his only begotten son

1606. to the end that all who believe

1607. in him will not perish but have

  1608. eternal life.

1609. And so when you, you, you see,

1610. when you understand this and you

1611. understand that you pray that

1612. God's will be done, not your

1613. own, it's not something that

1614. creates a type of fatalism in

1615. you that you shouldn't do

1616. anything because God's will is

  1617. going to be done.

1618. It, in fact, is as it starts to

1619. grip you that the one who

1620. teaches us to pray this is the

1621. God, is the one who died for

1622. me, who loved me to the point

  1623. of embracing my shame.

1624. He knows my, he knows my

  1625. despair.

1626. He knows how much like Elijah I

  1627. am.

1628. He knows those times and I

1629. just want to completely give up

1630. and still he loved me and died

  1631. for me.

1632. And it's by being held by him

1633. and saved by him that I have the

1634. context, the comfort to pray your

  1635. will be done.

1636. And that isn't something, by the

1637. way, that then makes you not want

  1638. to pray.

1639. When you understand the gospel and

1640. in the context of the gospel that

1641. your will be done, I can pray for

1642. Bob that who should have died four

1643. hours, five hours earlier, five and

1644. a half hours earlier, he should have

  1645. been dead.

1646. And I can pray for him if it is your

  1647. will, heal him.

  1648. Why?

1649. If it is your will.

  1650. The universe explodes with

  1651. possibilities.

  1652. It doesn't create a type of

1653. fearfulness and a type of

  1654. passivity.

1655. It is, I can pray for anything.

1656. God wants me to pray big prayers.

1657. And God wants me to come to him

1658. when I say, God, I am so beat up.

  1659. I am so tired.

1660. I have such a hard time praying.

1661. Lord, have mercy upon me and help

  1662. me.

1663. I'm going to have to watch my time.

1664. I just want to say one more thing.

1665. And this is really important.

1666. It's one of the things, if you get

1667. the blogs, one of the things I get,

1668. you get with the weekly blog is

1669. something called Growing in Grace

1670. where I give a couple of attitudes

1671. that come out of the text and I give

1672. a bit of a way to pray the

1673. scripture text that we've read.

1674. And so that's what you, if you go

1675. and get that and a memory verse

1676. for the week as well.

1677. And so one of the things, this

  1678. happened to us.

1679. We had a neighbor whose brother

1680. was very much into drugs.

1681. And I think it was LSD that he was

  1682. doing.

1683. And one of the things about the LSD

1684. is that, and this had happened to

1685. him before, is that he'd have this

1686. confidence under the influence of

1687. the drug that he could fly.

1688. Like a great confidence that he

  1689. could fly.

  1690. I can fly.

  1691. I can fly.

1692. And unfortunately, he decided to act

1693. on that from the 10th floor of a

  1694. building.

1695. And he plunged to his death.

1696. Now, here's the big problem we have

  1697. with the word faith.

1698. Faith, in a sense, is not really about

1699. you and it's not about me.

1700. A minuscule faith in a proper object

1701. is vastly better than a huge faith

  1702. in a delusion or a lie.

1703. You might have an absolutely

1704. minuscule faith, like the space

1705. between my finger and my thumb,

1706. is how big your faith is.

1707. That if you get on that Air Canada

1708. or WestJet thing, that it's actually

1709. going to safely take off, get you to

1710. your destination and safely land.

1711. Your faith might be that minuscule.

1712. But the fact is, it's that minuscule

  1713. you get on.

1714. But it doesn't really matter how big

  1715. your faith is.

1716. What matters is whether the plane is

  1717. dependable.

1718. In the same way that if you have a

1719. huge faith, I can fly.

  1720. I can fly.

  1721. I can fly.

1722. And you jump off of the floor of a

1723. 10-story building and you plunge to

  1724. your death.

1725. You see, the issue with faith,

  1726. faith is always a word that's about a

1727. personal connection of trust into

  1728. something or some person.

1729. What is the prayer of faith?

1730. The prayer of faith for a Christian

1731. is that I have been made right with

1732. God by the one who loved me so much

1733. that he died for me.

1734. This God that I talk to, that I come

1735. to, is the God, the same God who

1736. defeated Egypt and brought Israel out

  1737. of slavery.

1738. It's the same God that used Gideon to

1739. rescue the Israelites from 160,000

  1740. Midianites.

1741. It is the same God who worked through

1742. Esther to change the mind of the most

1743. powerful empire in the world to save

  1744. the Jews.

1745. It is the same, he is the same God who

1746. rose Jesus from the dead.

1747. He is the same God that even the

1748. lowliest person with the most

1749. minuscule faith sitting in their room

1750. or sitting in church or sitting here

1751. watching right now praying to that

1752. triune God, what does not matter is

1753. how big your faith is.

1754. It can be very minuscule, what matters

  1755. is God.

1756. You are talking to the Father and the

1757. Son and the Holy Spirit, three persons,

  1758. one God.

1759. You have become that, you have become

1760. the adopted child of God, his precious

1761. possession and treasure through faith

1762. in Jesus as your Savior and your Lord.

1763. He has revealed himself most perfectly

1764. by living a life of miracle and of love

1765. and of compassion and of pity and of

1766. mercy, dwelling amongst us in our mess

1767. and then burying that mess in his

1768. person as he died in your place, in

  1769. your stead.

1770. And then he defeated that great enemy

1771. that you cannot defeat, which is death

1772. and the sin which causes death.

1773. And as he bears your sin and tastes all

1774. there is to death and rises from the

1775. dead, he does that out of love for you

1776. and he will come again.

1777. And it is the Father, the Son, and the

1778. Holy Spirit, three persons, one God

  1779. to whom we pray.

1780. Just, I need to wrap this up.

1781. If you go back in the text, the heart

1782. of the text is, at the heart of the text

1783. is the two things, the prayer of faith

1784. and the prayer of faith at the end of

1785. the day, what you are saying is that the

  1786. Lord's will be done.

1787. The same one that you trust to keep you

1788. safe for all eternity, to make you fit

1789. for a new heaven and a new earth for all

1790. eternity is the same one that you pray

1791. about for the big and the small things

  1792. of your life.

1793. And you are just like Elijah, he is no

  1794. different than you.

1795. And you can pray big prayers and you can

  1796. pray small prayers.

1797. And what do you need?

  1798. What do I need?

1799. Well, first of all, if you've not given

1800. your life to Jesus, there is no better

  1801. time right now.

1802. The God that really should exist, a God

1803. that speaks and loves and communicates, a

1804. God that is not a God far away but is

1805. present, powerful, active and hidden,

1806. always working on his perfect plan.

1807. That is the God that does exist, that's

  1808. been revealed by Jesus.

1809. And there is no better time than die to

1810. the foolish plausibility of the culture and

1811. ask Jesus to be your Savior and your Lord.

1812. No better time than now.

1813. And the two things that we need to help

1814. us with prayer, which come out of this, is

1815. that when you see that you're to prayer in

1816. faith and it's the faith in Jesus dying for

1817. you, it's that he has revealed God.

1818. So the two things that we need to help us

1819. in prayer, these are things, because I have

1820. weak faith, let me tell you, I have weak

1821. faith, is begin the habit of saying, Father,

1822. make the gospel more real to my heart.

1823. Lord, make the fact that Jesus died for me

1824. and that he is my hope of glory, make that

1825. more real, deep in my heart to me.

1826. And the second thing that we need to pray,

1827. you see, in a sense, I mean, part of how we

1828. grow in prayer is actually just praying big

  1829. prayers.

1830. And you can read my blog and other types of

1831. things, but the prior work is actually, Lord,

1832. make the gospel more real to me.

1833. And then the final one, and you've heard me

1834. talk about this before, but we need to,

1835. friends, brothers and sisters, we need to

1836. remind each other of this all the time.

1837. God is big and you are small and that is

  1838. good.

1839. And the big problem that you and I have is

1840. we think the cancer is big and God is

  1841. small.

1842. We think the Supreme Court of Canada is big

  1843. and God is small.

1844. We think the Parliament is big and we are

  1845. small.

1846. We think big tech is big and we are small.

1847. We think our neighbor is big and we are

  1848. small.

1849. We think our boss is big or our daughter is

1850. big or our husband or our wife are big.

1851. The problem is big and God is small.

1852. And that's what we think all of the time.

1853. And so one of the things that we need to

1854. do is say, God, help the gospel to become

1855. more real to my heart.

1856. And Father, help me to know that you are

1857. big and that everything else is small.

  1858. And even name it.

1859. Say, Father, I have such a hard time believing

1860. that you're bigger than the cancer.

1861. I have a hard time believing that you are

  1862. bigger than the Parliament.

1863. I have a hard time believing that you are

1864. believing that you are bigger than my boss

1865. or my economics or my finances or my romantic

  1866. life.

1867. Father, I have a hard time with it.

  1868. Help me to believe.

1869. Help me to know that you are big and everything

  1870. else is small.

1871. And you see, to pray that God is big and that

1872. everything else is small, if you pray that

  1873. without knowing Jesus, that's a terrifying

  1874. thing.

  1875. That will crush you.

1876. Why will it crush you?

1877. Well, because the gods of this world want you

  1878. to die for them.

1879. And so it's a scary thing to pray that you

1880. know that God is bigger.

1881. But if you understand the gospel first, that

1882. God dies for you, then that begins to open

1883. the door to say, God, you are big.

1884. Help me to know that you are the same God.

1885. I'm speaking right now as I walk down Bank

1886. Street, as I walk through the gay village, that

  1887. I'm Father.

1888. I'm speaking right now to the God who opened

1889. the Red Sea to bring the nation of Israel out

1890. of bondage and slavery in Egypt.

1891. I am talking to the one who defeated Midian.

1892. I am talking to the one who defeated Persia.

1893. I am talking to the one who rose Jesus from

  1894. the dead.

1895. I am talking to you who are present, powerful,

1896. active, hidden, and always working on your

  1897. plan A.

1898. And I am talking to you as your precious,

1899. loved child by adoption and grace.

  1900. Let's pray.

1901. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would do

1902. this mighty work in our heart, that you would

1903. help us, Father, to pray a prayer of faith, that

1904. you would help us to pray a prayer of faith,

1905. knowing how big you are, your great compassion

1906. and your love, that your will, your sovereign

1907. will, your good purposes will be done, that even

1908. when you say no, Father, it might have to be that

1909. we wait until the new heaven and the new earth to

1910. see how wise and good and loving you actually were

1911. to us, to say no, to see those times you said not

1912. yet and then you answered later.

1913. And we'd forgotten that we'd even prayed it and

1914. how you answered it, maybe a week, a month, a day,

1915. a decade, two decades later.

1916. Father, we ask that you deliver us from our amnesia.

1917. We ask, Father, that you grip us with the gospel,

1918. with who Jesus is and what he did for us.

1919. And we ask, Father, that you grip us anew with how

1920. great and glorious you are, that you are present and

  1921. powerful, active and hidden.

  1922. You hear our prayers.

1923. Father, grip us with these truths.

1924. And we ask this in Jesus's name.

  1925. Amen.
