  1. Now, if you have your Bibles, perhaps you can turn with me to the book of Ecclesiastes,

  2. this Old Testament wisdom book that we're working our way through. Maybe as you're turning there,

  3. wasn't it good in God's wonderful wisdom and timing that Ian got to lead us and share of what

  4. God had done for him 68 years ago? God's timing is perfect. Ecclesiastes chapter 9, we're going to

    Ecclesiastes 9 chapter mention

  5. read the first 12 verses together. So, let's hear God's Word. So, I reflected on all this and concluded

  6. that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God's hands, but no one knows whether love

  7. or hate awaits them. All share a common destiny, the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,

  8. the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good,

  9. so with the sinful. As it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.

  10. This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun. The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts

  11. of people, moreover, are full of evil, and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and

  12. afterwards they join the dead. Anyone who is among the living has hope. Even a live dog is better off

  13. than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no

  14. further reward, and even their name is forgotten. Their love, their hate, and their jealousy have long

  15. since vanished. Never again will they ever part in anything that happens under the sun. Go, eat your

  16. food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.

  17. Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. Enjoy life with your wife, whom you

  18. love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun, all your meaningless

  19. days. For this is your lot in life, and in your toilsome labor under the sun. Whatever your hand

  20. finds to do, do it with all your might. For in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is

  21. neither working, nor planning, nor knowledge, nor wisdom. I have seen something else under the sun.

  22. The race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise, or wealth

  23. to the brilliant, or favor to the learned. But time and chance happen to them all. Moreover, no one knows

  24. when their hour will come, as fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare. So people

  25. are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them. Amen. So if you keep your Bible open there,

  26. here is our next lesson from our preacher, and it's this. Enjoy life in this unpredictable world.

  27. The 21st of October, 2015, was a big day, and I wonder if anybody knows why. You'd have to be a real

  28. film buff to know why. It was the future day, from Back to the Future 2. And so people got really

  29. excited back in 2015 trying to see, well, what predictions from 1989 actually came to pass.

  30. Some were spot on. If you watch the movie, you'll see people making video calls. And there were

  31. smart watches. And Nike even made self-tying shoes for one year only. But of course, some were wildly

  32. wrong. There are still no hoverboards. There are still no flying cars. And we don't have super accurate,

  33. up to the second weather reports that guarantee anything. People like making predictions.

  34. And as people make predictions, often we tie it with the idea of control. We can very easily imagine

  35. our lives operate like a closed system. If I do X, then Y will certainly happen, as if it's as

  36. straightforward as if I flick the switch, the lights come on. So we watch a weather report,

  37. and we plan for a lovely day in the sunshine. And how many of us have taken a soaking as a result?

  38. Far more significantly, perhaps, we can think about Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister in the

  39. 1930s, announcing after meeting with Hitler, peace in our time. Little did he realize he could not

  40. control or predict Hitler's evil actions. Or maybe personally, we have found ourselves making five-year

  41. plans, ten-year plans, retirement plans, only they've been impacted by redundancy or ill health

  42. or failures and disappointments. And so Ecclesiastes 9 is going to explore this problem for us,

  43. and it's also going to present a solution to us. So our preacher has been looking at this head on,

  44. and he continues to engage with the idea that life is unpredictable, that there are so many outcomes

  45. that are not clear to us. As Burns and Steinbeck appreciated, the best laid plans of mice and men

  46. often go awry. And as we reflect on that, and as we experience that, often it stirs up emotions for us.

  47. Perhaps it causes us to ask questions. We have frustration or sadness or despair.

  48. We can ask ourselves, what's the point? How do I please God in the chaos that is my life or this world?

  49. And our preacher is going to say to us this evening, very honestly, yes, life is predictably unpredictable.

  50. So what we should do is trust in God, the only one who knows and controls.

  51. And for us living when we do, we should trust the God who sent His Son to guarantee an eternal future.

  52. Our preacher is going to say to us, yes, you may very well feel surrounded by fear and uncertainty,

  53. but still each day fight for joy and enjoy life's good things when they come to you.

  54. So let's think about this first big idea that we see at the beginning and the end,

  55. that life is predictably unpredictable. So if you look at chapter 9, verses 1 to 6,

  56. the preacher begins, here are some things that you can count on in life,

  57. though these are not things that we would instinctively choose for ourselves.

  58. In verse 1, he says to us that everyone is going to have a mixed experience of life.

  59. Life is going to come with ups and downs.

  60. The righteous and the wise and what they do are in God's hands,

  61. but no one knows where their love or hate awaits them.

  62. The righteous and the wise have learned to trust God and to know that their times are in God's hands,

  63. they're living God's way, but their future could be love or hate.

  64. In other words, it could be positive or negative.

  65. There is no fixed rule.

  66. God is God and we are not.

  67. And we're being invited to recognize that faith and good planning,

  68. living by God's wisdom, does not shelter us from the troubles in life.

  69. Boys and girls, again, to go to movies,

  70. you probably have never heard of the film Forrest Gump,

  71. but Forrest Gump, the main character, once said that life is like a box of chocolates.

  72. Life, actually, you know those jelly bean packets that you get where you never know what flavor you're going to get?

  73. They could be really good ones, they could be awful ones, those Harry Potter ones.

  74. Life is a bit more like that, according to our preacher.

  75. You never know what any day is going to bring.

  76. It could be good, it could be bad.

  77. Only God knows.

  78. So we can count on knowing ups and downs in life.

  79. Something else we can count on is this.

  80. Everybody shares the same destiny.

  81. In the end, we all die.

  82. And the author makes plain, we all die regardless of how we have chosen to live.

  83. Whether we have chosen to live a wild and reckless life,

  84. whether we've fallen into all kinds of sin and addiction and troubles,

  85. or whether we've lived an upright life, all will die.

  86. There's that series of contrasts.

  87. The good and the bad, the clean and the unclean.

  88. Whether we make oaths or whether we feel in our conscience we can never make an oath,

  89. no one escapes.

  90. Now, our preacher recognizes this is a hard truth.

  91. It's always a hard truth to consider.

  92. Indeed, in verse 3, he calls it an evil.

  93. He also points to another reality.

  94. That most people in the life that they have choose the way of madness and folly.

  95. Biblically, living without God.

  96. But at the end of the day, we will all face death.

  97. Our life and our death are in God's hands.

  98. Our preacher wants to remind us of that.

  99. Something else that we can recognize with our preacher, verses 4 to 6,

  100. everyone knows and chooses to believe that life is better than death.

  101. Verse 4 says,

  102. anyone who is among the living has hope.

  103. Sounds a lot like our popular phrase,

  104. where there is life, there is hope.

  105. Doctors will tell us that hope is important for recovery.

  106. And then there's that proverb.

  107. Even a live dog is better off than a dead lion.

  108. Better a living street dog than a dead king of beasts.

  109. Life is better than death.

  110. There's a set of comparisons there in verses 5 and 6.

  111. The living have knowledge, but the dead know nothing.

  112. While we're alive, we can gain rewards, but not when we're dead.

  113. The living experience intense emotions.

  114. Even if it's love and hate and jealousy, for the dead, those have vanished.

  115. To be alive is to have a part to play in what's going on in the world.

  116. But for the dead, our preacher says,

  117. never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.

  118. Now I hope, I hope at this stage we're asking,

  119. what about resurrection?

  120. What about eternal life?

  121. We're absolutely going to get there.

  122. But we need to remember that our preacher is often taking the viewpoint of,

  123. imagine all there is is life under the sun.

  124. There is no God.

  125. That's why he so often talks about life being meaningless.

  126. So he's taking that point of view.

  127. But also we have to remember this is the Old Testament.

  128. This is Old Testament where they didn't yet know in full view

  129. the glory of the resurrection.

  130. But they did know in the Old Testament that God is in control,

  131. that life is a gift and life is a good thing,

  132. that life is better than death in this world.

  133. But it leaves us with a tension.

  134. What is predictable?

  135. According to our preacher, ups and downs in life and death.

  136. And then we go to the end of the section.

  137. Now where again he's coming back to life being unpredictable.

  138. Verse 11, we can be surprised by the outcomes that we see in life.

  139. Life isn't as straightforward as input X and guarantee Y comes out.

  140. Sometimes the race is not to the swift.

  141. Sometimes the tortoise beats the hare.

  142. Sometimes the best candidate misses out.

  143. Sometimes the battle is not to the strong.

  144. The Goliaths are beaten by David.

  145. Lester can win the premiership.

  146. Sometimes food doesn't come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned.

  147. Sometimes talent and genius goes unrecognized and unrewarded.

  148. Think of Van Gogh.

  149. Maybe the most famous painter in the world, but he died penniless.

  150. Only sold one painting in his entire life.

  151. Why is that?

  152. Why is it that we can be surprised by outcomes?

  153. End of verse 11.

  154. Because time and chance happen to them all.

  155. Because we are not in control.

  156. And our predictions and our plans don't always come to pass.

  157. And he's going to push us further in that direction in verse 12 to say,

  158. We can be surprised by the hour of our day.

  159. Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come.

  160. So he uses these different images of a fish or a bird that's caught in a net.

  161. You know, no fish wakes up thinking,

  162. Today I'm going to get caught.

  163. I'm going to end up fish supper.

  164. It just happens.

  165. Nets and traps work on the basis of surprise.

  166. And our preacher says,

  167. People are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.

  168. Don't we know that?

  169. Terrible news.

  170. Painful events.

  171. The loss of loved ones.

  172. We can feel trapped by those evil times.

  173. And ultimately, by the day of our own death.

  174. And so our preacher here, the preacher in Ecclesiastes,

  175. He keeps bringing us back to these realities.

  176. Why?

  177. It's obviously something that's really important for us to be aware of.

  178. Maybe especially in times like these where it's very seldom that people are considering

  179. the big realities of life and death.

  180. Our preacher can help us to be prepared.

  181. Because if we want to live well, we need to be ready to die well.

  182. To know that we are trusting in Jesus.

  183. That we're ready to meet with our Creator.

  184. That we know and we are glad that our times are in God's hands.

  185. Just before we move from this topic, some particular lessons to take note of.

  186. Firstly, to recognize, and I'm sure we see it in life,

  187. that there's no direct connection between living by faith and living the good life.

  188. And the Bible is full of these examples.

  189. Think about Job.

  190. God recognized Job as righteous,

  191. but Job lost it all and suffered greatly.

  192. Think about the Apostle Paul.

  193. We just heard from one of his letters.

  194. Paul, as he served Christ faithfully, suffered for Christ hugely.

  195. Think about the Lord Jesus Himself.

  196. Had no place to call home.

  197. Was betrayed by His friends.

  198. Rejected by those He came to save.

  199. And ultimately was killed.

  200. But Jesus was the man of faith.

  201. There is no straight line connection between living by faith

  202. and the good life.

  203. It's also a reminder that there is no guarantee

  204. that our plans, even our godly plans and ambitions,

  205. will work out.

  206. That none of us has that level of control or certainty.

  207. And there is no way for us to escape our common destiny.

  208. As hard as we might try,

  209. as hard as scientists and genetic engineers might try,

  210. 100% of us will die unless Jesus comes back first.

  211. Life is predictably unpredictable.

  212. So what should we do?

  213. And how should we live

  214. when life is so predictably unpredictable,

  215. when it sometimes seems so cruel?

  216. And that takes us to our central section here,

  217. to verses 7 to 10,

  218. where we have this simple but hard-to-appreciate wisdom.

  219. We should enjoy life when we can.

  220. Trusting that God knows, that God is good,

  221. that God is faithful.

  222. We trust Him.

  223. We trust that He is a generous God.

  224. And we enjoy life.

  225. So verse 7,

  226. Go, eat your food with gladness

  227. and drink your wine with a joyful heart.

  228. For God has already approved what you do.

  229. To know God's smile is a freedom

  230. to enjoy God's goodness,

  231. to enjoy food and drink,

  232. to enjoy our Sunday supper,

  233. to enjoy a family meal,

  234. to enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

  235. Just like the Lord Jesus,

  236. who was often found feasting,

  237. who provided a meal in the desert,

  238. and who shared meals with His disciples.

  239. When we share food and drink with others,

  240. we put aside our tasks and our responsibilities,

  241. and we sit face to face,

  242. and we spend time,

  243. and that's a gift.

  244. So we're called to enjoy our food and our drink.

  245. We're called to enjoy our relationships.

  246. Verse 9,

  247. Enjoy life with your wife,

  248. whom you love.

  249. Here that represents any of our loved ones.

  250. To enjoy spending time,

  251. to make time.

  252. How often we find that we are time poor.

  253. There is so many demands on us.

  254. But here is this wisdom.

  255. Enjoy our relationships,

  256. our family and our friends,

  257. and our church family.

  258. And again,

  259. Jesus shows us that way.

  260. Jesus,

  261. who was wonderfully busy

  262. about His Father's work,

  263. but built strong friendships

  264. among His disciples,

  265. and loved people well.

  266. I was thinking that perhaps,

  267. thinking about the sadness

  268. and the heartbreak

  269. and the death

  270. that's in chapter 9,

  271. maybe we felt the temptation,

  272. maybe after grief,

  273. that one way to avoid heartbreak

  274. is by not getting too close to anyone.

  275. You know,

  276. that we can protect ourselves

  277. by keeping our hearts in a box.

  278. I think this preacher

  279. would counsel us against that.

  280. Made me think of Lord Tennyson's

  281. famous line,

  282. it's better to have loved and lost

  283. than never to have loved at all.

  284. Our relationships matter.

  285. There's a lot of stuff that don't matter,

  286. but our relationships really do.

  287. And then in verse 10,

  288. enjoy our tasks.

  289. Whatever your hand finds to do,

  290. do it with all your might.

  291. In light of the fact

  292. that we are going to die,

  293. we should be glad

  294. that we have work to do today.

  295. We have tasks to do,

  296. we have opportunities to do today.

  297. So in our calling,

  298. in our responsibilities,

  299. in our workplaces,

  300. in our education,

  301. whatever our hand finds to do,

  302. enjoy it while we can,

  303. work hard and work well,

  304. knowing it's a gift

  305. from our God.

  306. Again, it's so interesting

  307. that he chooses to give us

  308. this positive instruction

  309. in the middle of,

  310. you know,

  311. the unpredictability

  312. and then the sadness of death,

  313. still in the midst of that

  314. for the person who trusts in God,

  315. there is the possibility for joy.

  316. And we should fight for joy

  317. and learn to enjoy

  318. these everyday gifts.

  319. But what I think we need to do

  320. as we finish

  321. is to remember

  322. that we're not Old Testament believers,

  323. we're New Testament people,

  324. and there's gospel advice

  325. that we need to hear as well.

  326. That just as we're called

  327. to enjoy life

  328. by our preacher here,

  329. Jesus would call us

  330. to find joy

  331. in resurrection life ultimately.

  332. Our preacher here

  333. has real faith.

  334. He really does trust God

  335. and who really is looking

  336. to enjoy the life

  337. that God has given him.

  338. But our New Testament faith

  339. is different

  340. because our hope

  341. is greater,

  342. because Jesus has died

  343. in our place for our sin,

  344. and because Jesus

  345. has risen

  346. and is alive again.

  347. That His sacrifice

  348. on our behalf

  349. has been accepted,

  350. that His victory

  351. over death

  352. and evil

  353. has been won,

  354. that eternal life

  355. has been secured

  356. for everybody

  357. who puts their trust

  358. in Jesus as Savior.

  359. And so that gives us

  360. a strong basis

  361. for joy,

  362. not temporary joy,

  363. but eternal joy.

  364. Perhaps as we finish,

  365. we can compare

  366. perspectives,

  367. looking at verses 5

  368. and 6.

  369. Now for the person

  370. who has eternal life,

  371. how different this is.

  372. It says, you know,

  373. the living know

  374. that they will die.

  375. That's,

  376. there's a level

  377. of knowledge there.

  378. But the dead know nothing.

  379. But those with

  380. resurrection life

  381. have a far greater knowledge,

  382. perfect knowledge

  383. of our great God

  384. and Savior.

  385. The promise

  386. that we will be made

  387. like Him,

  388. that we will see Him

  389. face to face,

  390. that we will enjoy

  391. the glory

  392. of our God

  393. and Savior

  394. forever.

  395. forever.

  396. In verse 5,

  397. the living have reward,

  398. the dead,

  399. says,

  400. have no further reward.

  401. But for the person

  402. with faith in Jesus,

  403. as Paul reminded us,

  404. we have eternal reward.

  405. There is an eternal weight

  406. of glory

  407. that is ours.

  408. For the person

  409. who's trusting in Jesus,

  410. perfect life forever

  411. is certainly coming

  412. in a new creation.

  413. In verse 6,

  414. the dead have no emotions.

  415. In verse 6,

  416. the living have intense emotions.

  417. Some of them are good

  418. and some of them are bad.

  419. There's love,

  420. there's hate,

  421. there's jealousy.

  422. The emotional life

  423. that we will have in heaven

  424. will be absolutely perfect.

  425. There'll be no hate there.

  426. There'll be no jealousy there.

  427. There'll be no despair

  428. or sorrow there.

  429. We will live

  430. in a world

  431. of perfect love

  432. and joy

  433. and peace

  434. when our trust

  435. is in the Lord Jesus.

  436. So Jesus is saying

  437. to you

  438. and to me today,

  439. enjoy life now

  440. absolutely

  441. and trust me

  442. for eternal life.

  443. Our preacher

  444. in Ecclesiastes,

  445. he is right.

  446. Life is better than death.

  447. But Jesus takes us further

  448. because resurrection life

  449. is better by far.

  450. And so we take heart

  451. in that as unpredictable

  452. as life is,

  453. as certain as the destiny

  454. of death is,

  455. we also have

  456. eternal hope

  457. in Jesus,

  458. our God and Savior,

  459. so that even

  460. in the midst

  461. of hardships

  462. we still have

  463. the capacity

  464. and reason

  465. to have great joy.

  466. So we can pray

  467. with thankfulness.

  468. Let's do that now.

  469. Lord our God,

  470. again we thank you

  471. for how

  472. wonderfully honest

  473. the Bible is

  474. and the book

  475. of Ecclesiastes is.

  476. it's very rare

  477. in our times

  478. to discuss

  479. the significant matters

  480. of life and death.

  481. And so we thank you

  482. that the preacher

  483. brings it before us.

  484. Lord,

  485. we thank you

  486. that there is joy

  487. to be found

  488. because you are

  489. a generous God,

  490. you're a merciful God.

  491. And so we pray

  492. that you'd help us

  493. to strip away

  494. the stuff that

  495. often doesn't matter

  496. that bogs us down.

  497. help us to enjoy

  498. our family

  499. and our friends.

  500. Help us to enjoy

  501. the simple pleasures

  502. of food and drink.

  503. Help us to be able

  504. to see

  505. our work

  506. and our responsibilities

  507. as challenging

  508. as they can be

  509. as gifts

  510. from you,

  511. as opportunities

  512. to serve you

  513. and to serve others.

  514. And Lord,

  515. above all that,

  516. may you help us

  517. always

  518. to be placing

  519. our trust

  520. in the Lord Jesus

  521. so that we would

  522. have the sure promise

  523. of eternal life,

  524. that there is

  525. another destiny

  526. that is certain

  527. for the believer.

  528. It is certain

  529. that when we die

  530. we will go

  531. to be with

  532. our God

  533. and our Savior

  534. forever,

  535. where all sadness

  536. and tears

  537. and death

  538. will be no more,

  539. and love

  540. and joy

  541. and fellowship

  542. with our God

  543. will belong to us

  544. forever.

  545. So help us

  546. to remember that

  547. as we look

  548. to fight for joy

  549. in order to glorify you.

  550. We pray in Jesus' name.

  551. Amen.

  552. Okay, we're going to sing

  553. a hymn

  554. as we close

  555. that helps us

  556. to keep going

  557. with that theme,

  558. Christ,

  559. our hope

  560. in life and death.

  561. And let's stand

  562. together

  563. so that we can sing.

  564. what is our hope

  565. in life and death?

  566. Christ alone,

  567. Christ alone,

  568. what is our only confidence?

  569. that our souls

  570. to Him belong?

  571. Who holds our days

  572. within His hand?

  573. What comes apart

  574. from His command?

  575. And what will keep us

  576. to the end?

  577. The love of Christ

  578. in which we stand.

  579. O sing

  580. hallelujah,

  581. our hope

  582. springs eternal.

  583. O sing

  584. hallelujah,

  585. now and ever

  586. we confess

  587. Christ,

  588. our hope

  589. in life and death.

  590. what truth

  591. can come

  592. the troubled soul?

  593. God is good,

  594. God is good,

  595. where is His grace

  596. and goodness known?

  597. In our great

  598. Redeemer's blood,

  599. who holds our faith

  600. when fears are right,

  601. who stands above

  602. the stormy trials,

  603. who sends the waves

  604. that bring us nigh

  605. unto the shore

  606. the rock of Christ.

  607. O sing

  608. hallelujah,

  609. our hope

  610. springs eternal.

  611. O sing

  612. hallelujah,

  613. now and ever

  614. we confess

  615. Christ,

  616. our hope

  617. in life and death.

  618. unto the grave

  619. what shall we sing?

  620. Christ, He lives,

  621. Christ, He lives,

  622. and what reward

  623. will heaven bring?

  624. Everlasting life with Him,

  625. there we will rise

  626. to meet the Lord,

  627. when sin and death

  628. will be destroyed,

  629. and we will feast

  630. in endless joy,

  631. when Christ is ours

  632. forevermore.

  633. O sing

  634. hallelujah,

  635. our hope

  636. springs eternal.

  637. O sing

  638. hallelujah,

  639. now and ever

  640. we confess

  641. Christ,

  642. our hope

  643. in life and death.

  644. Now and ever

  645. we confess

  646. Christ,

  647. our hope

  648. in life and death.

  649. our closing prayer

  650. comes from Romans

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  651. chapter 15

  652. and verse 13.

  653. May the God

  654. of hope

  655. fill you with all joy

  656. and peace

  657. as you trust

  658. in Him,

  659. so that you may

  660. overflow

  661. with hope

  662. by the power

  663. of the Holy Spirit.
