  1. Good morning, everyone. It's a great honor to open God's Word this morning. I know we say it,

  2. or at least I say it every Sunday. I really wish we could be together. I think it's wonderful that

  3. we have technology. It's still an honor for me to preach, to open up God's Word, even if it's

  4. in front of a camera. But please pray that we may meet together soon. We're in Deuteronomy chapter 5.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  5. Matt read. The next two weeks, we're going to be looking at the Ten Commandments. This week,

  6. next week, we'll be looking at the Lord's Prayer. Very, very important passages in Scripture.

  7. In many ways, this is gospel living and praying for God's people. So this is a big passage for us

  8. Christians. But before we get into the passage, you know, finding when you're doing translation work,

  9. it doesn't have to be with a Bible. It can be, I mean, whatever it may be, but you're translating

  10. one language into another. There are some serious difficulties with capturing the essence of a

  11. specific phrase, not just into the language that you're translating into, but into the culture that

  12. you're translating into. So I'll give an example. I used to work at the Canadian Bible Society

  13. before I worked, before I came on as an intern at Messiah a number of years ago. I wasn't on the

  14. translation team at the Canadian Bible Society, but I would get all of these updates from the

  15. translation team. And what they were working on primarily was a decades-long translation campaign

  16. to translate the Bible into Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people. Just remarkable. I think it took

  17. from start to finish a little over 30 years to do it. But one of the most comical stories in the

  18. whole translation process was trying to find an equivalent word for a camel for the Inuit people.

  19. You picture it. The Inuit people live in, I think, all the territories. I think they live in Greenland

  20. as well. They live essentially where there's cold most of the year and not much sunlight a lot of the

  21. year. Pretty well the complete opposite terrain as the deserts in the Middle East. So when you're

  22. translating the Bible, how do you translate a camel into the language of the Inuit people? I mean,

  23. I don't really know. I can't kind of give you the story of how they did it, but like there is no

  24. word-for-word equivalent. So you just kind of, I guess, grasp the essence of what a camel is or

  25. the animal. I'm not sure, but I always thought that was hilarious. Like they have polar bears up there.

  26. They have elk, caribou, not so much camels. So this morning, this is pertinent for us because we're

  27. going to look at the Ten Commandments or the Decalogue, and it is in the law of God.

  28. When we hear the word law to our English ears, it's not a bad word, but it's not a word that

  29. necessarily elicits excitement. Maybe for those in our congregation that have gone to law school,

  30. or if we have any kind of policy workers, you know, talk about laws and regulations and policies,

  31. and that is what gets them up in the morning. But for the rest of us, laws are fantastic, but

  32. they're kind of stiff. So when we talk about the law of God in the Old Testament,

  33. we are translating the word Torah, which is Hebrew, to law in English.

  34. The Torah, the law of God, it works in some ways. We kind of get an idea of this translation,

  35. what the Torah is about, but it doesn't capture the essence of what it truly is.

  36. To somehow think that God's law is stiff, it is not very exciting. It's kind of the part of the

  37. Bible, if you're going through a Bible reading plan where you yawn, or you are just, if you're super

  38. committed, like you plow through and you struggle through reading through the law.

  39. But the Hebrew understanding of God's law is not just jurisprudence. It is God's ways.

  40. Of course, it has to do with do's and don'ts, but it is the ways of God, the very essence of how God

  41. designed the world to be. In fact, God's law reflects his very character. It tells us about who God is,

  42. what he likes, what he doesn't like, what he loves, what he hates. It teaches us about justice, but that

  43. justice then points to God, who is justice himself. So what we see here in the Torah is more than just

  44. a law. It is a wonderful, beautiful, robust, comprehensive view into the very

  45. nature of God, a manifesto, so to speak, of God's character and his loves and his desires for his

  46. creation, whom we are a part of. We're part of God's creation. This is why when we read in the Psalter,

  47. King David especially, and especially in Psalm 119, King David gushes over God's law.

  48. He says that his law is better than life. How many lawyers have ever done that or policy

  49. analysts have ever just like, man, federal regulations, they are better than life. Nobody

  50. gushes over that. And yet King David here, it has gripped his very heart. You see God's law,

  51. his Torah, his Torah is much more than just that. So this week, like I mentioned, we're going to be

  52. in the Ten Commandments, the Decalogue, in the book of Deuteronomy. And we need to understand that

  53. this, that these Ten Commandments are first and foremost, they're not just air, kind of airdropped

  54. in scripture, but they're part of a grander story. So they're found in the book of Deuteronomy.

  55. And this is the second time we see the Ten Commandments in scripture. The first time we

  56. see it is in Exodus. Deuteronomy is kind of like, I mean, the name of it is second law in,

  57. that's what Deuteronomy means. It's kind of like an elaboration or a revisiting of the law that we've

  58. already seen in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. And we have to understand that it, like I mentioned,

  59. it's not airdropped. It's not a series of disjointed commands and laws, but rather it is

  60. a culmination of God forming the Israelites into a nation after he had rescued them from 400 years

  61. of Egyptian slavery. And right before he leads them into the promised land. So God gives the nation

  62. of Israel his law on, at Mount Sinai through Moses. And it is a part of this grand narrative

  63. where the Israelites are going from slaves to their redeemed people, but then on their way to the

  64. promised land. So it's important that we grasp this, not just the Ten Commandments, but where it is

  65. in scripture, because the Exodus is such a key integral part of not just the Old Testament or the five

  66. books of Moses, right? Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. But it is for the entire

  67. Old Testament for the writings and the prophets. It's so crucial. And it's also incredibly crucial that we

  68. understand it if we are to understand the New Testament. Because the New Testament is constantly

  69. seeing the Exodus, seeing Egypt as they are symbolic of something greater. And we'll get to that in a bit.

  70. But suffice it to say, it's very important that we have a good grasp on the Ten Commandments and on the

  71. story of the Exodus. So the Ten Commandments is a central piece of this story. It's far from do's and don'ts.

  72. And remember that God's laws express God's very good and very perfect character. So as that is a bit of an

  73. introduction, let's take a look at the Ten Commandments. We'll see three things that the Ten Commandments will

  74. show us. We'll see through them that they reveal to us God's good design for life.

  75. The second thing is it will show us that we have an inability to enjoy God's good design for life.

  76. And the last bit that it will reveal to us is the true beauty of God's law.

  77. And why we ought not to see it as stiff, but as a beautiful, robust, wonderful invitation for us

  78. into what it means to be God's people. So I'll repeat those things.

  79. The Ten Commandments will reveal to us God's good design for life,

  80. our inability to enjoy God's good design for life,

  81. and then it will also reveal to us the true beauty of God's laws, God's law. So we'll look at the first

  82. thing, God's good design for life. I want you guys to consider, what is the cause of strife and heartache

  83. in your life? Within your family, at your workplace, wherever you may be, at school, with siblings,

  84. with spouse, and by the way, if you're not experiencing strife right now, praise God, but think back on a time

  85. that you might have experienced strife and heartache.

  86. Is it not the cause of

  87. a relational breakdown?

  88. Is that not the cause of all, almost all, or if not all, of our heartache and strife in this life?

  89. All of our, the ills find their genesis, so to speak, in relational breakdown?

  90. Organizations spend tens of millions, hundreds of millions of dollars

  91. on workplace training that includes conflict resolution.

  92. Family members, partners, spouses, friends, they spend great sums of money on mediators and therapists,

  93. psychiatrists, to work through the aftermath of relational breakdowns.

  94. I really do think that relational breakdowns and relational brokenness,

  95. it really is at the heart of our pain and ill.

  96. It's also at the heart of our estrangement with God. So it's not just that we have relational

  97. breakdowns with each other, but we also have a relational breakdown with God.

  98. And whatever your spiritual background may be,

  99. know this, that God's good design

  100. was to make you and I

  101. and all people to enjoy a deep

  102. and transparent relationship with Him.

  103. But at the core of what it means

  104. to be a Christian,

  105. what it means to know the only

  106. true God is to

  107. have a relationship.

  108. And not in a quaint way, but a deep,

  109. satisfying, transparent

  110. relationship with Him.

  111. And yet, relational brokenness

  112. rears its ugly head in that as well.

  113. Sin

  114. comes into the picture.

  115. And what is sin if not a rejection of God's

  116. good plan for us to be in a relationship with Him?

  117. Somehow, I know what's best.

  118. I know what is going to make me tick,

  119. what I need,

  120. what kind of relationship will suit me better.

  121. And it is not God.

  122. Is this not the cause of our estrangement to God?

  123. I mean, look at Genesis 1 and 2 and 3.

  124. God makes everything.

  125. It's good.

  126. He makes the first Adam and Eve

  127. and the story of creation.

  128. And there is a rejection

  129. of God.

  130. And what is it,

  131. if not a relational breakdown?

  132. So we have a relational breakdown vertically

  133. between us and God,

  134. a relational breakdown with each other.

  135. That's horizontally.

  136. But undergirding all of this,

  137. I think,

  138. is a relational breakdown internally.

  139. What do I mean by all of this?

  140. Human beings have a conscience.

  141. We know right from wrong.

  142. And contrary to some of our thought leaders,

  143. not all,

  144. but some of them,

  145. and some very predominant ones,

  146. right and wrong is not a mere social construct.

  147. It is remarkable to see children

  148. know right from wrong

  149. almost from,

  150. I don't want to say infancy,

  151. but like from toddlers,

  152. even maybe before that.

  153. That it's something inherent in us,

  154. knowing right from wrong.

  155. And it is a feature,

  156. a key feature,

  157. of what it means to be made

  158. in the image of God.

  159. Animals,

  160. other animals,

  161. other beings,

  162. they don't have the,

  163. they don't have a conscience.

  164. They don't differentiate

  165. between right and wrong.

  166. It's only us.

  167. It's a key feature

  168. of what it means to be made

  169. in the image of God.

  170. God.

  171. But consider,

  172. for us,

  173. what inner turmoil looks like.

  174. We know the right way to go,

  175. but we don't do it.

  176. We have inner dialogues with ourselves,

  177. some more vibrant and robust inner dialogues than others,

  178. but all of us wrestle,

  179. have this internal wrestling

  180. with the things we ought to do

  181. and the things we ought not to do.

  182. The things that are inherently right

  183. and the things that are totally wrong.

  184. And there are relational breakdowns

  185. also with inanimate objects as well.

  186. We have relational breakdowns with money.

  187. And what do I mean by that?

  188. We put a lot of emphasis on income

  189. or possessions or relationships.

  190. And it is not a healthy relationship

  191. that we have with these things.

  192. For some of us,

  193. it's an unhealthy relationship with food,

  194. with our devices.

  195. All of these things

  196. speak to a breakdown of a relationship.

  197. Our desires are completely disordered.

  198. They're completely disordered.

  199. And this is the wonderful thing about the law.

  200. The law recognizes this.

  201. God's ways recognize this.

  202. It recognizes that God had a perfect design

  203. and that there's a relational brokenness

  204. that has destroyed it.

  205. The law primarily is separated into two parts.

  206. Those parts that pertain to the relational breakdown

  207. between us and God

  208. and that part that relates to the relational breakdown

  209. between us and one another,

  210. me and you,

  211. you and your family member,

  212. you and whoever else it may be.

  213. And although at the surface,

  214. the text says stuff like,

  215. you shall not murder,

  216. you shall not commit adultery,

  217. you shall not steal,

  218. for just three examples of the law.

  219. But it's important

  220. that we don't just read the prohibition,

  221. but we ask ourselves the question,

  222. well then,

  223. what's the opposite of that prohibition?

  224. Is the opposite of not,

  225. of stealing,

  226. simply not stealing?

  227. Or is there something greater

  228. and more robust to it?

  229. Is there something greater

  230. and more robust

  231. than just not killing somebody?

  232. Like,

  233. is that just what the text is asking?

  234. I mean,

  235. at the very minimum,

  236. yes.

  237. Yes.

  238. if somebody is not killing somebody,

  239. but they have a desire to,

  240. and somehow they're not doing it.

  241. I mean,

  242. that's a good thing.

  243. But the law speaks to something

  244. more robust,

  245. more wonderful,

  246. more incredible.

  247. Remember,

  248. that God's law,

  249. God's Torah,

  250. it reflects

  251. his very good character

  252. and his very perfect being.

  253. The Westminster Larger Catechism,

  254. question 99 says this,

  255. where a sin is forbidden,

  256. the contrary duty is commanded.

  257. So,

  258. we need to ask ourselves,

  259. that's a very helpful little bit

  260. to think through.

  261. Where we see something

  262. that is forbidden,

  263. we need to ask ourselves,

  264. not,

  265. how do I not just commit that sin?

  266. Very good question.

  267. But more so,

  268. how do I capture the essence

  269. of the opposite?

  270. The first command

  271. calls for fidelity

  272. to the only true God.

  273. This is what it says,

  274. sorry,

  275. in verse 7,

  276. you shall have no other gods

  277. before me.

  278. I guess in many ways,

  279. it's not just the first,

  280. it's the second and the third

  281. as well.

  282. You shall not make for yourselves

  283. a carved image

  284. or any likeness

  285. of anything

  286. that is in heaven above

  287. or that is on the earth beneath

  288. or that is in the water

  289. under the earth.

  290. You shall not bow down to them

  291. or serve them

  292. for I,

  293. the Lord your God,

  294. am a jealous God.

  295. And then,

  296. the next one,

  297. in verse 11,

  298. you shall not take the name

  299. of the Lord your God

  300. in vain.

  301. The first,

  302. the second,

  303. the third,

  304. all call for fidelity

  305. to God.

  306. God calls himself

  307. a jealous God.

  308. The first commandment

  309. makes it clear,

  310. the second and third

  311. really flesh that out.

  312. To have other gods

  313. besides the one true God

  314. is not a simple rejection

  315. of the Christian faith

  316. for another tradition

  317. or no faith at all.

  318. It is a rejection

  319. of what it means

  320. to be a flourishing human.

  321. What it means to live

  322. as you were designed to live.

  323. Remember,

  324. God is the creator of all

  325. and he is good.

  326. And his purposes are good.

  327. And for him to create you

  328. and I

  329. and then give us

  330. his ways of how to live,

  331. it is a good thing.

  332. And to go the opposite

  333. is to not experience flourishing.

  334. It's to not know

  335. the very thing

  336. by which we were made

  337. to live for.

  338. to live into.

  339. To know in part

  340. this true connection

  341. to the divine,

  342. to God

  343. and to trust that

  344. there's a promise

  345. that although in part

  346. we can know

  347. this relationship

  348. and know this

  349. this deep satisfaction,

  350. this relational satisfaction

  351. in part in this life

  352. but also the promise

  353. that in the life to come

  354. we will know it fully.

  355. this is the relational

  356. heart of God

  357. and to know God

  358. and to serve him

  359. and to not see it

  360. as this faith

  361. as just one of many

  362. and I just want to pick it

  363. because it sounds better

  364. than say Hinduism

  365. or transcendental meditation

  366. or just a type of secularism.

  367. It's no,

  368. it's not that.

  369. It is instead

  370. to follow God

  371. and to experience

  372. and to lean into

  373. and to grow into

  374. relational health

  375. or to not.

  376. And this is the beauty

  377. of God's law.

  378. It is good

  379. and it is for our flourishing.

  380. The next few commandments

  381. have everything to do

  382. with flourishing

  383. for human society.

  384. Healthy family units,

  385. prohibition of murder

  386. like I mentioned,

  387. adultery,

  388. theft,

  389. dishonesty in court.

  390. It's all absolutely critical

  391. like just sociologically speaking

  392. for a society

  393. to be healthy.

  394. Think about it

  395. when this stuff breaks down

  396. on a societal scale.

  397. Okay,

  398. well,

  399. pause on that.

  400. When it breaks down

  401. within a family unit,

  402. what happens?

  403. the family unit

  404. breaks apart.

  405. How about in a city

  406. or in a country?

  407. Why is it that

  408. murder,

  409. theft,

  410. dishonesty,

  411. when that becomes

  412. a mainstay

  413. of a nation,

  414. we call those nations

  415. failed states.

  416. These few commandments

  417. are so integral

  418. just for life

  419. to function,

  420. let alone thrive.

  421. But,

  422. here's the thing,

  423. the last commandment,

  424. it speaks to not covet,

  425. to not envy.

  426. Let me read it to you.

  427. And you shall not covet,

  428. this is verse 21,

  429. you shall not covet

  430. your neighbor's wife,

  431. you shall not desire

  432. your neighbor's house,

  433. his field,

  434. or his male servant,

  435. or female servant,

  436. his ox,

  437. his donkey,

  438. or anything

  439. that is your neighbor's,

  440. or anything

  441. that is your neighbor's.

  442. Christine,

  443. my wife,

  444. she reminds me

  445. often that coveting

  446. is the begetting sin.

  447. Oftentimes,

  448. we don't,

  449. we don't start

  450. with theft

  451. or murder

  452. or adultery,

  453. but it starts

  454. with coveting.

  455. So,

  456. if

  457. we are looking

  458. at the law

  459. and seeing

  460. the prohibitions

  461. and asking ourselves

  462. the question,

  463. well,

  464. what is the opposite

  465. of that?

  466. What is the true essence

  467. in flourishing,

  468. I guess,

  469. the essence,

  470. the goodness

  471. of the law

  472. for coveting?

  473. It would be contentment.

  474. And just,

  475. just imagine

  476. if the city

  477. of Ottawa,

  478. the residents,

  479. regardless of the neighborhood

  480. they were in.

  481. Imagine in your own house

  482. if you were content.

  483. Imagine if you were content,

  484. not for a day or two,

  485. but well after

  486. the new thing

  487. lost its shine.

  488. Or the new promotion,

  489. it didn't carry

  490. as much kind of weight

  491. in the office

  492. or at the workplace.

  493. or if the honeymoon

  494. phase is over.

  495. What would it look like

  496. if you were truly content?

  497. How would that

  498. change

  499. society?

  500. How would that

  501. change your family?

  502. If you look back

  503. on the other commandments,

  504. we can see

  505. God's design

  506. for human flourishing

  507. when he talks about

  508. not bearing

  509. false witness.

  510. that's not just

  511. being honest

  512. in a courtroom.

  513. It's about

  514. not slandering people.

  515. It's about

  516. not gossiping.

  517. It's about

  518. speaking highly

  519. of people.

  520. It's about

  521. giving them

  522. the benefit

  523. of the doubt.

  524. It's about

  525. not strawmanning

  526. your enemy.

  527. Imagine if

  528. that happened.

  529. Would Twitter

  530. exist?

  531. not stealing.

  532. It's not

  533. simply

  534. just

  535. taking

  536. what is

  537. not yours

  538. but

  539. giving

  540. so that

  541. people

  542. don't need

  543. to steal.

  544. It's about

  545. seeing needs

  546. and meeting

  547. them.

  548. And murder

  549. we see

  550. in the

  551. gospel

  552. that Jesus

  553. himself

  554. it's not

  555. just

  556. murder

  557. is attacking

  558. somebody

  559. but it's

  560. hating

  561. somebody.

  562. So how do

  563. we then

  564. see the

  565. opposite

  566. of this

  567. how do

  568. we then

  569. look with

  570. eyes of

  571. love?

  572. Doesn't that

  573. speak of

  574. human flourishing?

  575. I mean

  576. if we go

  577. through the

  578. law and

  579. just

  580. the

  581. ten

  582. commandments

  583. here

  584. and just

  585. take

  586. our

  587. time

  588. and

  589. see

  590. God's

  591. good

  592. purpose

  593. and

  594. design

  595. wow

  596. like it

  597. really is

  598. something

  599. else.

  600. It

  601. sounds

  602. almost

  603. too good

  604. to be

  605. true

  606. but it's

  607. worth

  608. doing

  609. and

  610. encourage

  611. you

  612. take

  613. some

  614. time

  615. we don't

  616. have

  617. time

  618. to

  619. go

  620. through

  621. this

  622. I mean

  623. each

  624. what

  625. three

  626. four

  627. summers

  628. ago

  629. at

  630. Messiah

  631. we did

  632. a whole

  633. summer

  634. series

  635. on the

  636. ten

  637. commandments

  638. we don't

  639. have

  640. time

  641. to

  642. exhaustively

  643. go

  644. through

  645. this

  646. take

  647. time

  648. yourself

  649. this

  650. week

  651. and

  652. plumb

  653. the

  654. ten

  655. commandments

  656. asking

  657. yourself

  658. where

  659. is

  660. God's

  661. good

  662. design

  663. found

  664. in

  665. this

  666. the

  667. ten

  668. commandments

  669. show

  670. us

  671. how

  672. terrific

  673. God's

  674. design

  675. for

  676. life

  677. is

  678. but

  679. it

  680. also

  681. shows

  682. us

  683. our

  684. inability

  685. to

  686. live

  687. up

  688. to

  689. it

  690. it's

  691. so

  692. obvious

  693. what

  694. to

  695. do

  696. and

  697. what

  698. the

  699. result

  700. is

  701. in

  702. our

  703. life

  704. when

  705. we

  706. try

  707. to

  708. make

  709. this

  710. happen

  711. we

  712. are

  713. rebels

  714. at

  715. heart

  716. I've

  717. mentioned

  718. that

  719. we

  720. are

  721. insurrection

  722. ists

  723. we

  724. have

  725. large

  726. eyes

  727. and

  728. greedy

  729. bellies

  730. it's

  731. a

  732. terrible

  733. combination

  734. we

  735. want

  736. what

  737. we

  738. don't

  739. have

  740. we

  741. grow

  742. tired

  743. of

  744. the

  745. things

  746. we

  747. do

  748. have

  749. we

  750. don't

  751. have

  752. any

  753. contentment

  754. we

  755. have

  756. seared

  757. consciences

  758. and

  759. no

  760. distrust

  761. and

  762. suspicion

  763. much

  764. more

  765. intimately

  766. than

  767. we

  768. ever

  769. ever

  770. ever

  771. wish

  772. we

  773. did

  774. we

  775. put

  776. up

  777. walls

  778. so

  779. that

  780. we're

  781. not

  782. hurt

  783. by

  784. people

  785. we

  786. are

  787. broken

  788. people

  789. and

  790. by

  791. the

  792. way

  793. if

  794. you

  795. don't

  796. really

  797. feel

  798. like

  799. you're

  800. a

  801. very

  802. broken

  803. person

  804. I

  805. think

  806. that's

  807. fantastic

  808. and

  809. there

  810. are

  811. a lot

  812. of

  813. both

  814. Christians

  815. and

  816. especially

  817. non-Christians

  818. that

  819. are

  820. really

  821. really

  822. healthy

  823. emotionally

  824. healthy

  825. people

  826. they

  827. have

  828. great

  829. relationships

  830. they've

  831. figured out

  832. ways to

  833. deal with

  834. conflict

  835. really well

  836. but is

  837. anybody

  838. perfect

  839. has

  840. anybody

  841. had a

  842. good run

  843. of 70

  844. or 80

  845. years

  846. of

  847. relational

  848. perfection

  849. I have

  850. a friend

  851. who has

  852. a friend

  853. who

  854. it would

  855. seem to

  856. me that

  857. that this

  858. person

  859. not a

  860. Christian

  861. has

  862. everything

  863. going right

  864. and had

  865. everything

  866. growing

  867. right

  868. from

  869. his

  870. childhood

  871. to

  872. his

  873. adolescence

  874. to

  875. his

  876. time

  877. at

  878. university

  879. to

  880. afterwards

  881. getting

  882. a job

  883. like

  884. there's

  885. no

  886. issues

  887. in

  888. his

  889. life

  890. until

  891. there

  892. was

  893. a

  894. strain

  895. on

  896. relationships

  897. it

  898. hits

  899. us

  900. all

  901. and we

  902. have

  903. an

  904. inability

  905. to

  906. keep

  907. God's

  908. law

  909. perfect

  910. so

  911. much

  912. so

  913. that

  914. in

  915. the

  916. letter

  917. of

  918. St.

  919. James

    James 2:10

  920. chapter 2

  921. verse 10

  922. it says

  923. this

  924. for

  925. whoever

  926. keeps

  927. the

  928. whole

  929. law

  930. but

  931. fails

  932. in

  933. one

  934. point

  935. has

  936. become

  937. accountable

  938. for

  939. all

  940. of

  941. it

  942. or

  943. has

  944. become

  945. a

  946. law

  947. breaker

  948. that

  949. does

  950. not

  951. seem

  952. fair

  953. perfection

  954. or

  955. nothing

  956. in

  957. your

  958. law

  959. breaker

  960. but

  961. consider

  962. this

  963. these

  964. laws

  965. aren't

  966. just

  967. disconnected

  968. prohibitions

  969. but

  970. they're

  971. deeply

  972. deeply

  973. interwoven

  974. like I

  975. mentioned

  976. about

  977. coveting

  978. being

  979. the

  980. begetting

  981. sin

  982. you

  983. can

  984. covet

  985. and

  986. not

  987. murder

  988. but

  989. I

  990. almost

  991. guarantee

  992. you

  993. that

  994. if

  995. somebody's

  996. a murderer

  997. they've

  998. coveted

  999. you

  1000. don't

  1001. necessarily

  1002. have to

  1003. be a

  1004. thief

  1005. if

  1006. you're

  1007. a

  1008. person

  1009. that

  1010. covets

  1011. but

  1012. if

  1013. you've

  1014. stolen

  1015. it's

  1016. because

  1017. you're

  1018. coveting

  1019. take

  1020. idolatry

  1021. as another

  1022. example

  1023. you can

  1024. keep

  1025. all the

  1026. other

  1027. commandments

  1028. except

  1029. you can't

  1030. if you're

  1031. an

  1032. idolater

  1033. because

  1034. what is

  1035. idolatry

  1036. if it

  1037. is not

  1038. looking

  1039. to

  1040. other

  1041. things

  1042. or other

  1043. people

  1044. or whatever

  1045. it may

  1046. be

  1047. for

  1048. true

  1049. satisfaction

  1050. for

  1051. deep

  1052. deep

  1053. belonging

  1054. for

  1055. true

  1056. flourishing

  1057. if it's

  1058. disconnected

  1059. from

  1060. god

  1061. all

  1062. of

  1063. these

  1064. things

  1065. are

  1066. interconnected

  1067. and

  1068. at

  1069. the

  1070. very

  1071. minimum

  1072. if

  1073. you

  1074. sin

  1075. against

  1076. another

  1077. human

  1078. being

  1079. you

  1080. are

  1081. sinning

  1082. against

  1083. somebody

  1084. made

  1085. in the

  1086. image

  1087. of god

  1088. you are

  1089. desecrating

  1090. in a

  1091. sense

  1092. something

  1093. that god

  1094. made

  1095. someone

  1096. that god

  1097. made

  1098. so it

  1099. makes sense

  1100. then when i

  1101. look at james

    James 2 chapter mention

  1102. chapter 2

  1103. and it says

  1104. for whoever

  1105. keeps the

  1106. whole law

  1107. but fails

  1108. in one

  1109. point

  1110. has

  1111. become

  1112. accountable

  1113. of

  1114. all

  1115. of

  1116. it

  1117. so

  1118. this is

  1119. the thing

  1120. the law

  1121. isn't just

  1122. there to

  1123. show us

  1124. god's

  1125. beautiful

  1126. perfect

  1127. design

  1128. for life

  1129. the law

  1130. also

  1131. acts

  1132. as the

  1133. means by

  1134. which

  1135. human

  1136. beings

  1137. know

  1138. they're

  1139. sinful

  1140. and this

  1141. isn't

  1142. a bad

  1143. thing

  1144. it's

  1145. part

  1146. of god's

  1147. design

  1148. that in

  1149. the beginning

  1150. there was

  1151. this

  1152. incredible

  1153. scene

  1154. in the

  1155. garden

  1156. before sin

  1157. entered the

  1158. picture

  1159. and it

  1160. is

  1161. wiped

  1162. away

  1163. like it

  1164. is gone

  1165. because of

  1166. sin

  1167. but god

  1168. is redeeming

  1169. it

  1170. and he

  1171. has

  1172. redeemed

  1173. it

  1174. and he

  1175. is inviting

  1176. you to

  1177. be a

  1178. part of

  1179. that

  1180. redemption

  1181. the law

  1182. was never

  1183. designed

  1184. as a

  1185. means to

  1186. achieve

  1187. one's

  1188. salvation

  1189. how could

  1190. it

  1191. we are

  1192. destined

  1193. to fail

  1194. but remember

  1195. that this

  1196. was given

  1197. to the

  1198. israelites

  1199. on mount

  1200. sinai

  1201. after god

  1202. had rescued

  1203. them from

  1204. egypt

  1205. guys

  1206. this

  1207. is

  1208. this

  1209. is

  1210. a

  1211. picture

  1212. uh

  1213. um

  1214. god

  1215. communicating

  1216. to

  1217. redeemed

  1218. people

  1219. how

  1220. redeemed

  1221. people

  1222. ought to

  1223. live

  1224. look

  1225. with me

  1226. verse

  1227. six

  1228. this

  1229. is

  1230. how

  1231. it

  1232. opens

  1233. up

  1234. before

  1235. we

  1236. even

  1237. get

  1238. into

  1239. the

  1240. commandments

  1241. itself

  1242. it

  1243. says

  1244. this

  1245. in

  1246. verse

  1247. six

  1248. i am

  1249. the lord

  1250. your god

  1251. who brought

  1252. you out

  1253. of the

  1254. land

  1255. of egypt

  1256. out of

  1257. the house

  1258. of slavery

  1259. four hundred

  1260. years

  1261. and israel

  1262. cried out

  1263. to god

  1264. they did

  1265. nothing

  1266. themselves

  1267. and god

  1268. it says

  1269. with

  1270. with a

  1271. strong arm

  1272. and an

  1273. out

  1274. a strong

  1275. hand

  1276. and an

  1277. outstretched

  1278. arm

  1279. he rescued

  1280. israel

  1281. he rescued

  1282. them

  1283. a stiff

  1284. necked

  1285. people

  1286. a people

  1287. that

  1288. pushed

  1289. god

  1290. away

  1291. and what

  1292. does he

  1293. do

  1294. he invites

  1295. them

  1296. in

  1297. and makes

  1298. a covenant

  1299. with them

  1300. the

  1301. the

  1302. all caps

  1303. lord

  1304. that we

  1305. have

  1306. in verse

  1307. six

  1308. is the

  1309. covenant

  1310. name

  1311. it's used

  1312. in place

  1313. of the

  1314. covenant

  1315. name

  1316. of god

  1317. and that

  1318. covenant

  1319. name

  1320. speaks

  1321. to

  1322. the

  1323. relational

  1324. aspect

  1325. of who

  1326. god

  1327. is

  1328. these

  1329. people

  1330. are

  1331. already

  1332. a part

  1333. of

  1334. god's

  1335. covenant

  1336. people

  1337. they

  1338. can't

  1339. earn

  1340. their

  1341. salvation

  1342. because

  1343. they're

  1344. already

  1345. saved

  1346. and this

  1347. is what

  1348. the law

  1349. does

  1350. as well

  1351. it shows

  1352. us a

  1353. great

  1354. need

  1355. for a

  1356. savior

  1357. and god

  1358. is saying

  1359. i'm

  1360. your

  1361. savior

  1362. so we

  1363. don't

  1364. have an

  1365. ability

  1366. to keep

  1367. the law

  1368. but it

  1369. it's a

  1370. beautiful

  1371. thing

  1372. because it

  1373. points us

  1374. to the

  1375. one

  1376. that will

  1377. that will

  1378. rescue

  1379. us

  1380. completely

  1381. and holy

  1382. the third

  1383. thing

  1384. and it's

  1385. connected

  1386. to verse

  1387. six

  1388. is the

  1389. law showing

  1390. the true

  1391. beauty

  1392. of who

  1393. god

  1394. is

  1395. with this

  1396. declaration

  1397. of

  1398. of

  1399. in verse

  1400. six

  1401. where it

  1402. says

  1403. i'm

  1404. the lord

  1405. notice

  1406. what does

  1407. it say

  1408. right after

  1409. it says

  1410. i am

  1411. the lord

  1412. your

  1413. god

  1414. your

  1415. god

  1416. there's

  1417. no

  1418. greater

  1419. declaration

  1420. for

  1421. god

  1422. to

  1423. say

  1424. over

  1425. former

  1426. slaves

  1427. that

  1428. i am

  1429. your

  1430. god

  1431. so

  1432. it's

  1433. him

  1434. saying

  1435. that

  1436. you

  1437. are

  1438. you

  1439. are

  1440. no

  1441. longer

  1442. under

  1443. the lordship

  1444. of sin

  1445. and slavery

  1446. and death

  1447. you're

  1448. under my

  1449. lordship

  1450. no longer

  1451. are you

  1452. a slave

  1453. you're

  1454. a son

  1455. you're

  1456. a daughter

  1457. the

  1458. ancient

  1459. gods

  1460. and we

  1461. read

  1462. about

  1463. this

  1464. in

  1465. in

  1466. the

  1467. scriptures

  1468. but also

  1469. archaeology

  1470. helps us

  1471. to understand

  1472. a bit

  1473. of this

  1474. too

  1475. the

  1476. ancient

  1477. gods

  1478. of the

  1479. nations

  1480. that

  1481. surrounded

  1482. the

  1483. promised

  1484. land

  1485. the

  1486. gods

  1487. of

  1488. the

  1489. canaanites

  1490. they

  1491. were

  1492. impersonal

  1493. gods

  1494. but they

  1495. called

  1496. for

  1497. worship

  1498. that

  1499. entailed

  1500. gluttony

  1501. that

  1502. entailed

  1503. drunkenness

  1504. ritual

  1505. cult

  1506. prostitution

  1507. child

  1508. sacrifice

  1509. with a

  1510. promise

  1511. that

  1512. that

  1513. will

  1514. lead

  1515. to

  1516. the

  1517. good

  1518. life

  1519. do

  1520. this

  1521. and

  1522. you

  1523. will

  1524. know

  1525. real

  1526. human

  1527. flourishing

  1528. we

  1529. don't

  1530. have

  1531. a

  1532. pantheon

  1533. of

  1534. canaanite

  1535. gods

  1536. that

  1537. we

  1538. worship

  1539. here

  1540. in

  1541. canada

  1542. but

  1543. our

  1544. own

  1545. gods

  1546. in

  1547. canada

  1548. i mean

  1549. they

  1550. are

  1551. they're

  1552. not

  1553. much

  1554. different

  1555. canada

  1556. is full

  1557. of all

  1558. sorts

  1559. of

  1560. different

  1561. cultures

  1562. so it's

  1563. not as

  1564. if i'm

  1565. speaking

  1566. of

  1567. a

  1568. monolithic

  1569. culture

  1570. of canada

  1571. and

  1572. yet

  1573. there are

  1574. so many

  1575. commonalities

  1576. within the

  1577. the different

  1578. canadian

  1579. cultures

  1580. maybe that's

  1581. a better way

  1582. of saying

  1583. it

  1584. that are

  1585. so similar

  1586. to the

  1587. canaanite

  1588. gods

  1589. for instance

  1590. gluttony

  1591. this

  1592. inordinate

  1593. desire

  1594. for more

  1595. if that's

  1596. not gluttony

  1597. i mean

  1598. that is

  1599. gluttony

  1600. gluttony

  1601. is never

  1602. being

  1603. satisfied

  1604. eating

  1605. acquiring

  1606. possessing

  1607. to no

  1608. end

  1609. because there

  1610. is no

  1611. satisfaction

  1612. what is

  1613. drunkenness

  1614. if not

  1615. a desire

  1616. to connect

  1617. in some

  1618. kind of

  1619. ecstatic

  1620. way

  1621. to

  1622. and when i

  1623. say drunkenness

  1624. drug use

  1625. as well

  1626. to

  1627. some

  1628. kind

  1629. of

  1630. higher

  1631. power

  1632. or

  1633. a

  1634. means

  1635. by

  1636. which

  1637. we

  1638. cover

  1639. up

  1640. and

  1641. dull

  1642. our

  1643. pain

  1644. because

  1645. we have

  1646. an inability

  1647. a crippling

  1648. fear to deal

  1649. with our

  1650. pain

  1651. how about

  1652. cult

  1653. ritual

  1654. prostitution

  1655. we don't

  1656. have

  1657. temples

  1658. to

  1659. whatever

  1660. god

  1661. where there's

  1662. cult

  1663. ritual

  1664. prostitution

  1665. but sexual

  1666. conquest

  1667. is something

  1668. that is

  1669. still

  1670. i mean

  1671. it is

  1672. it is

  1673. still

  1674. seen

  1675. with

  1676. a type

  1677. of

  1678. sick

  1679. virtue

  1680. and i say

  1681. sick

  1682. virtue

  1683. not because

  1684. those

  1685. terrible

  1686. people

  1687. out there

  1688. it's

  1689. because

  1690. it's

  1691. within

  1692. so many

  1693. of us

  1694. in the

  1695. church

  1696. a desire

  1697. also to

  1698. know

  1699. sexual

  1700. pleasure

  1701. completely

  1702. disconnected

  1703. with

  1704. responsibility

  1705. and i don't

  1706. mean

  1707. responsibility

  1708. in like

  1709. like i

  1710. need to

  1711. do my

  1712. chores

  1713. before i

  1714. can go

  1715. outside

  1716. i'm an

  1717. eight-year-old

  1718. responsibility

  1719. but like

  1720. responsibility

  1721. for people

  1722. we

  1723. unhitch

  1724. sex

  1725. from

  1726. procreation

  1727. in our

  1728. culture

  1729. i mean

  1730. child

  1731. sacrifice

  1732. this is

  1733. the one

  1734. that

  1735. it just

  1736. always

  1737. blows my

  1738. mind

  1739. because

  1740. in the

  1741. ancient

  1742. world

  1743. if you

  1744. wanted

  1745. your

  1746. crops

  1747. to

  1748. grow

  1749. if you

  1750. wanted

  1751. success

  1752. in your

  1753. life

  1754. you'd

  1755. sacrifice

  1756. a child

  1757. on a

  1758. statue

  1759. of the

  1760. god

  1761. molek

  1762. and it's

  1763. not the

  1764. the

  1765. the

  1766. morgent

  1767. taller

  1768. clinic

  1769. just a

  1770. temple

  1771. to

  1772. molek

  1773. and by

  1774. the way

  1775. if you

  1776. have been

  1777. pushed

  1778. into

  1779. or know

  1780. people

  1781. that have

  1782. been

  1783. pushed

  1784. into

  1785. an

  1786. abortion

  1787. it is

  1788. heinous

  1789. and

  1790. broken

  1791. and i'm

  1792. not

  1793. coming

  1794. down

  1795. hard

  1796. on

  1797. people

  1798. that

  1799. have

  1800. a ton

  1801. of

  1802. pain

  1803. and

  1804. baggage

  1805. from

  1806. that

  1807. but the

  1808. lie

  1809. is

  1810. if you

  1811. have a

  1812. child

  1813. it's

  1814. going to

  1815. ruin

  1816. your

  1817. prospects

  1818. it's

  1819. going to

  1820. it's

  1821. going to

  1822. if it's

  1823. an unwanted

  1824. child

  1825. there's

  1826. going to

  1827. be

  1828. stigma

  1829. around

  1830. that

  1831. and it's

  1832. not going

  1833. to cause

  1834. you to

  1835. flourish

  1836. you're

  1837. not going

  1838. to have

  1839. a

  1840. flourishing

  1841. life

  1842. these are

  1843. what the

  1844. false

  1845. gods

  1846. tell us

  1847. do this

  1848. and your

  1849. life will

  1850. flourish

  1851. and what

  1852. is the

  1853. result

  1854. time and

  1855. again

  1856. it is

  1857. relational

  1858. brokenness

  1859. it is

  1860. not

  1861. flourishing

  1862. being

  1863. estranged

  1864. from

  1865. family

  1866. members

  1867. because of

  1868. some

  1869. terrible

  1870. beef

  1871. that

  1872. happened

  1873. or

  1874. choosing

  1875. to

  1876. push

  1877. people

  1878. aside

  1879. for your

  1880. own

  1881. gain

  1882. or

  1883. feeling

  1884. like

  1885. if

  1886. because of

  1887. some

  1888. issue

  1889. that

  1890. you

  1891. didn't

  1892. deal

  1893. with

  1894. right

  1895. there

  1896. is

  1897. no

  1898. redemption

  1899. for

  1900. you

  1901. because

  1902. that

  1903. thing

  1904. has

  1905. taken

  1906. on

  1907. a

  1908. monster

  1909. status

  1910. in

  1911. your

  1912. life

  1913. whatever

  1914. that

  1915. may

  1916. be

  1917. that

  1918. is

  1919. not

  1920. flourishing

  1921. it's

  1922. not

  1923. flourishing

  1924. it's

  1925. slavery

  1926. but

  1927. God's

  1928. law

  1929. I

  1930. mean

  1931. we

  1932. have

  1933. this

  1934. absolutely

  1935. stupid

  1936. understanding

  1937. in parts

  1938. of our

  1939. culture

  1940. maybe

  1941. in your

  1942. own

  1943. life

  1944. that

  1945. an

  1946. unhindered

  1947. life

  1948. is

  1949. the

  1950. best

  1951. life

  1952. a

  1953. life

  1954. devoid

  1955. of

  1956. restraint

  1957. is

  1958. the

  1959. best

  1960. life

  1961. but

  1962. I'm

  1963. telling

  1964. you

  1965. restraint

  1966. is

  1967. a

  1968. beautiful

  1969. wonderful

  1970. thing

  1971. and

  1972. especially

  1973. when it

  1974. comes

  1975. to

  1976. God's

  1977. law

  1978. because

  1979. it

  1980. orders

  1981. our

  1982. desires

  1983. in the

  1984. way

  1985. that

  1986. they're

  1987. supposed

  1988. to

  1989. with

  1990. God

  1991. at

  1992. the

  1993. head

  1994. desiring

  1995. our

  1996. best

  1997. mending

  1998. broken

  1999. relationships

  2000. setting

  2001. the

  2002. ground

  2003. work

  2004. for

  2005. future

  2006. healthy

  2007. relationships

  2008. and

  2009. ultimately

  2010. dealing

  2011. with our

  2012. sin

  2013. and

  2014. brokenness

  2015. in a

  2016. way

  2017. that's

  2018. not a

  2019. cover-up

  2020. in a

  2021. way

  2022. that's

  2023. not

  2024. just

  2025. numbing

  2026. pain

  2027. but

  2028. dealing

  2029. with

  2030. it

  2031. deep

  2032. down

  2033. I'll

  2034. go

  2035. one

  2036. thing

  2037. I might

  2038. go

  2039. two

  2040. things

  2041. one

  2042. last

  2043. at least

  2044. one

  2045. last

  2046. thing

  2047. I'm

  2048. not

  2049. sure

  2050. if

  2051. you

  2052. noticed

  2053. that

  2054. I

  2055. touched

  2056. on

  2057. nine

  2058. out

  2059. of

  2060. the

  2061. ten

  2062. commandments

  2063. I

  2064. touched

  2065. on

  2066. commandments

  2067. one

  2068. two

  2069. and

  2070. three

  2071. and

  2072. then

  2073. I

  2074. touched

  2075. on

  2076. commandment

  2077. five

  2078. all the

  2079. way

  2080. to

  2081. the

  2082. end

  2083. I

  2084. made

  2085. no

  2086. mention

  2087. of

  2088. the

  2089. fourth

  2090. commandment

  2091. which

  2092. is

  2093. keeping

  2094. the

  2095. sabbath

  2096. it's

  2097. the

  2098. largest

  2099. portion

  2100. within

  2101. the

  2102. decalogue

  2103. the

  2104. ten

  2105. commandments

  2106. and

  2107. I'll

  2108. read

  2109. it

  2110. out

  2111. it's

  2112. four

  2113. verses

  2114. this

  2115. is

  2116. what

  2117. it

  2118. you

  2119. shall

  2120. remember

  2121. that

  2122. you

  2123. were

  2124. a

  2125. slave

  2126. in

  2127. the

  2128. land

  2129. of

  2130. Egypt

  2131. and

  2132. the

  2133. Lord

  2134. your

  2135. God

  2136. brought

  2137. you

  2138. out

  2139. from

  2140. there

  2141. with

  2142. a

  2143. mighty

  2144. hand

  2145. and

  2146. an

  2147. outstretched

  2148. arm

  2149. therefore

  2150. the

  2151. Lord

  2152. your

  2153. God

  2154. commanded

  2155. you

  2156. to

  2157. keep

  2158. the

  2159. sabbath

  2160. it's

  2161. interesting

  2162. as well

  2163. that

  2164. in

  2165. Exodus

  2166. the

  2167. ten

  2168. commandments

  2169. in

  2170. Exodus

  2171. on

  2172. top

  2173. of

  2174. that

  2175. there

  2176. is

  2177. the

  2178. mention

  2179. that

  2180. God

  2181. created

  2182. all

  2183. things

  2184. and

  2185. rested

  2186. on

  2187. the

  2188. seventh

  2189. day

  2190. the

  2191. ten

  2192. commandments

  2193. that

  2194. it

  2195. is

  2196. if

  2197. the

  2198. ten

  2199. commandments

  2200. deal

  2201. with

  2202. relational

  2203. health

  2204. flourishing

  2205. between

  2206. us

  2207. and

  2208. God

  2209. the

  2210. vertical

  2211. and

  2212. the

  2213. horizontal

  2214. us

  2215. one

  2216. another

  2217. the

  2218. fourth

  2219. commandment

  2220. straddles

  2221. the two

  2222. it

  2223. deals

  2224. both

  2225. with

  2226. with

  2227. God

  2228. and

  2229. with

  2230. one

  2231. another

  2232. there's

  2233. this

  2234. internal

  2235. connection

  2236. that

  2237. happens

  2238. and

  2239. the

  2240. other

  2241. commandments

  2242. I mean

  2243. they touch

  2244. on this

  2245. but

  2246. the

  2247. Sabbath

  2248. it

  2249. just

  2250. does

  2251. such

  2252. a

  2253. fantastic

  2254. job

  2255. of

  2256. connecting

  2257. our

  2258. relationship

  2259. with

  2260. God

  2261. and

  2262. our

  2263. relationship

  2264. with

  2265. one

  2266. another

  2267. but

  2268. what

  2269. is

  2270. more

  2271. is

  2272. that

  2273. the

  2274. commandment

  2275. of

  2276. the

  2277. Sabbath

  2278. looks

  2279. to

  2280. something

  2281. much

  2282. greater

  2283. than

  2284. a

  2285. day

  2286. off

  2287. a

  2288. week

  2289. in

  2290. the

  2291. New

  2292. Testament

  2293. but

  2294. also

  2295. within

  2296. the

  2297. Old

  2298. Testament

  2299. as

  2300. well

  2301. the

  2302. Sabbath

  2303. is

  2304. a

  2305. picture

  2306. of

  2307. the

  2308. age

  2309. to

  2310. come

  2311. about

  2312. all

  2313. of

  2314. the

  2315. promises

  2316. fulfilled

  2317. to

  2318. know

  2319. God

  2320. in

  2321. his

  2322. fullness

  2323. to

  2324. know

  2325. him

  2326. without

  2327. any

  2328. obstacles

  2329. in

  2330. the

  2331. way

  2332. we

  2333. call

  2334. it

  2335. heaven

  2336. we

  2337. call

  2338. it

  2339. a

  2340. return

  2341. to

  2342. Eden

  2343. it

  2344. is

  2345. perfect

  2346. unbroken

  2347. relationship

  2348. with the

  2349. living

  2350. God

  2351. so much

  2352. so

  2353. Jesus

  2354. he talks

  2355. about

  2356. entering

  2357. his

  2358. rest

  2359. entering

  2360. his

  2361. rest

  2362. I

  2363. love

  2364. that

  2365. in

  2366. verse

  2367. 11

  2368. and

  2369. 12

  2370. or

  2371. sorry

  2372. in

  2373. verses

  2374. 15

  2375. and

  2376. 6

  2377. I guess

  2378. just

  2379. 15

  2380. why

  2381. why

  2382. do

  2383. we

  2384. we

  2385. take

  2386. a day

  2387. off

  2388. a week

  2389. it's

  2390. because

  2391. God

  2392. has

  2393. saved

  2394. us

  2395. we're

  2396. no

  2397. longer

  2398. slaves

  2399. and

  2400. the

  2401. picture

  2402. of

  2403. heaven

  2404. is

  2405. an

  2406. ending

  2407. of

  2408. our

  2409. strivings

  2410. an

  2411. ending

  2412. of

  2413. our

  2414. sin

  2415. of

  2416. trying

  2417. to

  2418. figure

  2419. out

  2420. how

  2421. to

  2422. make

  2423. sense

  2424. of

  2425. difficulties

  2426. in

  2427. life

  2428. an

  2429. end

  2430. to

  2431. doing

  2432. the

  2433. things

  2434. we

  2435. ought

  2436. not

  2437. to

  2438. do

  2439. I

  2440. mean

  2441. we

  2442. in

  2443. the

  2444. confession

  2445. there's

  2446. no

  2447. health

  2448. in

  2449. us

  2450. we

  2451. are

  2452. miserable

  2453. offenders

  2454. it's

  2455. an

  2456. end

  2457. to

  2458. that

  2459. the

  2460. end

  2461. to

  2462. that

  2463. the

  2464. Sabbath

  2465. looks

  2466. to

  2467. Jesus

  2468. himself

  2469. that

  2470. when

  2471. we

  2472. enter

  2473. the

  2474. Sabbath

  2475. we

  2476. are

  2477. entering

  2478. rest

  2479. and

  2480. eternity

  2481. with

  2482. God

  2483. through

  2484. Jesus

  2485. and

  2486. it's

  2487. this

  2488. wonderful

  2489. beautiful

  2490. picture

  2491. so

  2492. here's

  2493. the

  2494. thing

  2495. how

  2496. should

  2497. we

  2498. then

  2499. live

  2500. as

  2501. redeemed

  2502. people

  2503. well

  2504. we

  2505. should

  2506. do

  2507. our

  2508. very

  2509. best

  2510. to

  2511. keep

  2512. God's

  2513. commandments

  2514. but

  2515. remembering

  2516. always

  2517. that

  2518. we

  2519. are

  2520. doing

  2521. it

  2522. from

  2523. a

  2524. place

  2525. of

  2526. freedom

  2527. that

  2528. if

  2529. we

  2530. have

  2531. put

  2532. our

  2533. trust

  2534. and

  2535. our

  2536. hope

  2537. and

  2538. our

  2539. ultimate

  2540. longing

  2541. for

  2542. the

  2543. good

  2544. life

  2545. the

  2546. flourishing

  2547. life

  2548. then

  2549. by

  2550. God's

  2551. spirit

  2552. and

  2553. it's

  2554. interesting

  2555. here

  2556. that

  2557. today

  2558. is

  2559. Pentecost

  2560. that

  2561. God

  2562. gave

  2563. the

  2564. church

  2565. his

  2566. Holy

  2567. Spirit

  2568. the

  2569. promised

  2570. Holy

  2571. Spirit

  2572. Jesus

  2573. said

  2574. I

  2575. will

  2576. go

  2577. so

  2578. the

  2579. helper

  2580. may

  2581. come

  2582. and

  2583. the

  2584. Holy

  2585. Spirit

  2586. is

  2587. God's

  2588. own

  2589. spirit

  2590. the

  2591. third

  2592. member

  2593. of

  2594. the

  2595. Trinity

  2596. to

  2597. dwell

  2598. in

  2599. his

  2600. way

  2601. to

  2602. flourish

  2603. and

  2604. follow

  2605. God's

  2606. ways

  2607. and

  2608. it's

  2609. interesting

  2610. I

  2611. say

  2612. it's

  2613. interesting

  2614. because

  2615. today's

  2616. Pentecost

  2617. we can

  2618. read about

  2619. it in

  2620. Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2621. chapter

  2622. 2

  2623. but

  2624. Pentecost

  2625. was a

  2626. pre-existing

  2627. holy

  2628. day

  2629. before

  2630. Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2631. chapter

  2632. 2

  2633. and

  2634. what

  2635. does

  2636. it

  2637. mark

  2638. it

  2639. marks

  2640. the

  2641. giving

  2642. of

  2643. the

  2644. law

  2645. what

  2646. we

  2647. read

  2648. today

  2649. is

  2650. first

  2651. Pentecost

  2652. and

  2653. God

  2654. laid

  2655. out

  2656. his

  2657. plan

  2658. for

  2659. the

  2660. flourishing

  2661. the

  2662. good

  2663. life

  2664. and

  2665. deeply

  2666. embedded

  2667. in

  2668. that

  2669. he

  2670. was

  2671. pointing

  2672. to

  2673. Christ

  2674. and

  2675. pointing

  2676. to

  2677. the

  2678. redemption

  2679. of

  2680. not

  2681. just

  2682. the

  2683. Israel

  2684. nation

  2685. but

  2686. all

  2687. who

  2688. put

  2689. their

  2690. trust

  2691. and

  2692. faith

  2693. in

  2694. him

  2695. giving

  2696. us

  2697. the

  2698. Holy

  2699. Spirit

  2700. not

  2701. to

  2702. do

  2703. away

  2704. with

  2705. the

  2706. law

  2707. but

  2708. that

  2709. we

  2710. may

  2711. live

  2712. to

  2713. the

  2714. glory

  2715. of

  2716. God

  2717. the

  2718. law

  2719. and

  2720. to

  2721. know

  2722. what

  2723. it

  2724. means

  2725. to

  2726. be

  2727. people

  2728. that

  2729. bless

  2730. and

  2731. not

  2732. curse

  2733. people

  2734. that

  2735. see

  2736. needs

  2737. and

  2738. meet

  2739. them

  2740. people

  2741. that

  2742. declare

  2743. the

  2744. goodness

  2745. of

  2746. God

  2747. that

  2748. worship

  2749. the

  2750. one

  2751. true

  2752. God

  2753. that

  2754. call

  2755. people

  2756. out

  2757. of

  2758. a

  2759. life

  2760. of

  2761. slavery

  2762. into

  2763. a

  2764. life

  2765. of

  2766. contentment

  2767. not

  2768. contentment

  2769. just

  2770. because

  2771. yeah

  2772. they have

  2773. enough

  2774. stuff

  2775. but

  2776. because

  2777. they

  2778. know

  2779. God

  2780. because

  2781. he

  2782. is

  2783. the

  2784. true

  2785. gift

  2786. friends

  2787. it

  2788. is

  2789. a

  2790. wonderful

  2791. day

  2792. to

  2793. to

  2794. to

  2795. recommit

  2796. to

  2797. that

  2798. if

  2799. you

  2800. don't

  2801. know

  2802. the

  2803. Lord

  2804. if

  2805. you're

  2806. curious

  2807. about

  2808. the

  2809. faith

  2810. I

  2811. would

  2812. encourage

  2813. you

  2814. to

  2815. read

  2816. this

  2817. but

  2818. but

  2819. more

  2820. than

  2821. that

  2822. I

  2823. would

  2824. encourage

  2825. you

  2826. to

  2827. cry

  2828. out

  2829. to

  2830. God

  2831. as

  2832. if

  2833. you

  2834. were

  2835. an

  2836. Israelite

  2837. enslaved

  2838. in

  2839. Egypt

  2840. and

  2841. I

  2842. promise

  2843. you

  2844. I

  2845. promise

  2846. you

  2847. he

  2848. will

  2849. save

  2850. you

  2851. and

  2852. if

  2853. that

  2854. happens

  2855. guys

  2856. please

  2857. tell

  2858. one

  2859. of

  2860. us

  2861. we

  2862. want

  2863. to

  2864. connect

  2865. with

  2866. you

  2867. we

  2868. want

  2869. to

  2870. fellowship

  2871. with

  2872. you

  2873. connect

  2874. with

  2875. you

  2876. read

  2877. the

  2878. scriptures

  2879. be

  2880. friends

  2881. worship

  2882. God

  2883. together

  2884. and

  2885. that would

  2886. be

  2887. just

  2888. terrific

  2889. let's

  2890. pray

  2891. heavenly

  2892. father

  2893. we

  2894. thank

  2895. you

  2896. so

  2897. much

  2898. for

  2899. the

  2900. 10

  2901. commandments

  2902. they

  2903. aren't

  2904. stiff

  2905. laws

  2906. but

  2907. they're

  2908. an

  2909. expression

  2910. of

  2911. your

  2912. very

  2913. nature

  2914. they're

  2915. the

  2916. blueprint

  2917. to

  2918. what

  2919. human

  2920. flourishing

  2921. looks

  2922. like

  2923. they're

  2924. the

  2925. very

  2926. thing

  2927. that

  2928. point

  2929. to

  2930. you

  2931. Lord

  2932. please

  2933. help

  2934. us

  2935. to

  2936. not

  2937. look

  2938. to

  2939. false

  2940. gods

  2941. that

  2942. promise

  2943. the

  2944. world

  2945. but

  2946. completely

  2947. under

  2948. deliver

  2949. but

  2950. instead

  2951. let us

  2952. look

  2953. to

  2954. you

  2955. the

  2956. God

  2957. that

  2958. sacrificed

  2959. on our

  2960. behalf

  2961. that

  2962. doesn't

  2963. demand

  2964. first and

  2965. foremost

  2966. that

  2967. we

  2968. sacrifice

  2969. for

  2970. some

  2971. vague

  2972. union

  2973. with

  2974. you

  2975. in

  2976. the

  2977. good

  2978. life

  2979. but

  2980. rather

  2981. you

  2982. sacrifice

  2983. uniting

  2984. us

  2985. with

  2986. yourself

  2987. so

  2988. that

  2989. we

  2990. may

  2991. live

  2992. lives

  2993. of

  2994. sacrifice

  2995. in

  2996. thanksgiving

  2997. to

  2998. you

  2999. so

  3000. Lord

  3001. bless

  3002. us

  3003. as

  3004. we

  3005. go

  3006. our

  3007. own

  3008. ways

  3009. bless

  3010. us

  3011. as

  3012. we

  3013. try

  3014. our

  3015. best

  3016. by

  3017. your

  3018. Holy

  3019. Spirit

  3020. to

  3021. live

  3022. a

  3023. good

  3024. life

  3025. in

  3026. you

  3027. in

  3028. Jesus
