  1. Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would fall with fresh power upon us at this time.

  2. We are here to be in your presence, to receive from you in a worthy manner.

  3. Help us, Father, to be here, knowing that we are in your presence,

  4. that we are in the presence of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

  5. And, Father, we ask that you speak to us through your word,

  6. that your word would come deeply into our hearts,

  7. and that we would respond in a way that is for our true good,

  8. for the good of this city, the good of creation, and for your great glory.

  9. So, Father, do that wonderful work of your Holy Spirit, we pray.

  10. And we ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  11. Please be seated.

  12. One of the things I tell people,

  13. sometimes if people are asking me for a little bit of advice about how to handle a Bible study or a small group,

  14. or for sometimes when I'm talking to people about sermons and how to do them,

  15. is to, I mean, there's lots of different questions that we can ask,

  16. but one of the questions to ask is, or just to realize,

  17. that everything in the Bible is always speaking about something in our human condition.

  18. It's speaking about some loves that we have, some fears that we have,

  19. some hopes or yearnings that we have.

  20. It's speaking about problems that we face.

  21. It's speaking about the human condition, speaking about human problems, the human experience.

  22. So part of the thing you can do is ask yourself, like, just for a second,

  23. well, what human, and it can be more than one,

  24. so what human thing is actually being addressed in this text?

  25. We're preaching through the book of Haggai.

  26. We're going to be doing a series in the summer called Knowing God,

  27. where we'll look at a range of different texts about who God is.

  28. But we're going through the book of Haggai.

  29. And the text that we're looking at today actually speaks, not actually,

  30. as if it's, well, what a surprise.

  31. This week it does something different than the other weeks.

  32. I have a bad habit of saying actually when I shouldn't.

  33. This text talks about a very common human problem.

  34. Maybe some of you are dealing with it now or have dealt with it in the past,

  35. but if you haven't dealt with it yet, you're going to deal with it.

  36. And the human problem is that you think about the situation you're in,

  37. and the past was way better.

  38. Either the present sucks, and the future either is just going to continue to suck

  39. at the current level or it's going to even suck worse.

  40. So you're in this situation.

  41. The past was great.

  42. The present sucks.

  43. The future sucks.

  44. So how do you deal with that?

  45. Like how do you have hope when it just seems to be,

  46. and not only that, it's not only that you know that the past seemed to be way better.

  47. The present sucks.

  48. The future sucks.

  49. But the people around you would say the same thing.

  50. Yeah, yeah, George, the past was way better.

  51. Your current situation sucks.

  52. And I don't see much hope.

  53. All I see, as far as I can see, is just it sucks.

  54. And how do you deal with that?

  55. How do you live?

  56. Or how do you actually try to do some things and actually accomplish something

  57. if that's the situation that you're in?

  58. And that's the situation that, in fact, one of the things that's so interesting about this story

  59. is that's the situation, and God speaks into it.

  60. And I think if we look at it, if you start to think,

  61. okay, well, that's what's going on in this weird-sounding story

  62. with these names that we can't pronounce,

  63. you start to realize that the Bible says something very profound and powerful and wise

  64. about the human condition and about hope, because we need hope to live.

  65. So if you turn in your Bibles to Acts, I'm not Acts,

  66. Haggai chapter 2, let's look at the text together.

    Haggai 2 chapter mention

  67. Haggai chapter 2, verses 1 to 9.

    Haggai 2:1–9

  68. And just the context, some of you, I know, are visual, very visual people.

  69. And so if you're trying to imagine this text,

  70. imagine photographs of Aleppo in Syria.

  71. Imagine an area which has been completely and utterly devastated by war,

  72. where, you know, there's the odd wall standing up, but there's rubble everywhere.

  73. And that's the context of what's happening here.

  74. And the context further is that this is taking place 66 years

  75. after Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians.

  76. And so Babylon had destroyed the nation.

  77. Jeremiah had prophesied that that was going to happen.

  78. And it came true. But Jeremiah also prophesied that God was going to do another miracle,

  79. that God was actually going to help some of the people would maintain their Jewish identity

  80. and their worship and their reading of the Torah,

  81. and that some would actually return to this place,

  82. and that Jerusalem would end up eventually being rebuilt.

  83. And that was partly what...

  84. And so here we are, 66 years later,

  85. we have a situation where people have come back to the city of Jerusalem,

  86. and it's all in rubble.

  87. They began to rebuild the temple,

  88. but they got very severe pushback by the locals,

  89. and so they gave up.

  90. And it was in this context that Haggai begins to speak to them.

  91. And first of all, he confronts them and says,

  92. you need to put first things first.

  93. If you want to have God bless you, you need to put first things first.

  94. You need to have...you need to rebuild the temple.

  95. And his word convicts them, the Holy Spirit convicts them,

  96. and they start to rebuild the temple.

  97. Just sort of before we go any further on that,

  98. there's...you know, you've heard me say this a lot,

  99. but it's well worth being...

  100. I mean, one of the things we do about on Sunday mornings

  101. is we come to be reminded of the truth that we need to be reminded of.

  102. And what's at work in all of this

  103. is that the people have forgotten God.

  104. They've forgotten the Lord.

  105. And because they'd forgotten him and rebelled against him,

  106. they came under his judgment.

  107. But the Lord had never forgotten them.

  108. And the Lord had never forgotten his promises to them.

  109. And here's the Christian context for us.

  110. And this is very, very important to remember.

  111. The Christian life is not about how strong your grip is in Jesus' hand.

  112. The fact of the matter is, there will be times you really think,

  113. yeah, I'm really holding on to Jesus really tight.

  114. But there's going to be times when you've let go completely

  115. or your hand is very weak.

  116. But what matters isn't how strong your grip is in the hand of Jesus,

  117. but his grip.

  118. That's what matters.

  119. That's your hope.

  120. My hope is not that I have a really strong grip on Jesus.

  121. My hope is that he has a very strong grip.

  122. He has my hand and he will never let it go.

  123. That's my hope.

  124. And so it's in this context.

  125. There's ruins.

  126. They're just starting to rebuild.

  127. It's been seven weeks since the last prophecy.

  128. They've just begun to try to build and clear up the things

  129. and to start to build the temple.

  130. And it's in that situation that this text comes.

  131. And here's how it goes.

  132. In the seventh month, on the 21st day of the month,

  133. the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai, the prophet.

  134. Now, just sort of pause here.

  135. This little seemingly meaningless little piece of information

  136. is actually quite significant for a variety of reasons.

  137. So first of all, it's telling us that there's been seven weeks.

  138. In that seven weeks, there's been some Jewish festivals,

  139. which they've kept.

  140. They would have brought in some more of the harvest.

  141. And they've also begun to rebuild the temple,

  142. clear away some of the rubble,

  143. and maybe try to figure out what stones they might be able to use

  144. and looking for bits and pieces of wood they can use

  145. and maybe even begin to think about how they could go out

  146. to get the beams that they're going to have to get lumbered

  147. and brought in close.

  148. But they're just finishing the Feast of Tabernacles.

  149. That's one of the things that this date tells us.

  150. And this is actually not a sad thing for them,

  151. but it's a reminder that God delivered their forebears,

  152. their ancestors, out of slavery in Egypt

  153. and to bring them into the Promised Land.

  154. But when he brought them to the edge of the Promised Land,

  155. they refused to go in.

  156. They rebelled against him.

  157. And so they spent 40 years in the wilderness

  158. before eventually going into the Promised Land.

  159. And in those 40 years in the wilderness,

  160. they lived in tents and God provided for them.

  161. And the Feast of the Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths

  162. is that when they remember that.

  163. But here's the thing.

  164. Those of them that would have known their Tanakh,

  165. they would have known their Torah,

  166. they would have known that it was on this exact day

  167. in the year 960 B.C.

  168. that Solomon's temple was completed.

  169. Now, one of the things to my shame is

  170. my wife has lost both her mother and her father,

  171. and I don't remember the dates of their death

  172. or the dates of their birth.

  173. But we all know that remembering the date of a lost one,

  174. even many, many years later,

  175. can cause some sadness, some sorrow.

  176. I'm sure to my shame, not to my credit,

  177. there's been some time my wife might be sad

  178. and I might not remember that the reason she's sad

  179. is that it was on that day,

  180. whatever number of years ago,

  181. that her mom died or her father died

  182. or their birthday or something.

  183. But anniversaries matter.

  184. And so here we have a group of people amidst the rubble

  185. trying to rebuild the temple.

  186. And the day, some of them would remember,

  187. this is the day 500 and some odd years earlier,

  188. that the great temple of Solomon

  189. was completed and dedicated.

  190. And they just think of that

  191. and they think of all that's been lost.

  192. And they would definitely be looking

  193. at what is in front of them

  194. and thinking,

  195. this doesn't look too good.

  196. In fact, actually, God is going to walk towards that.

  197. Look what happens in verse 2

  198. and verse 3.

  199. Speak now to Zerubbabel,

  200. the son of Sheolatiel,

  201. governor of Judah,

  202. and to Joshua,

  203. the son of Jehoshadak,

  204. the high priest,

  205. and to all the remnant of the people,

  206. and say,

  207. who is left among you

  208. who saw this house in its former glory?

  209. How do you see it now?

  210. Is it not as nothing in your eyes?

  211. Now this is one of the remarkable things about the Bible,

  212. one of the powerful things about the Bible,

  213. and one of the powerful things

  214. that the Bible has to say about hope.

  215. For the Bible,

  216. hope isn't the same as optimism.

  217. Optimism is,

  218. things are going to get better.

  219. I can make things better.

  220. We can make things better.

  221. I'm strong,

  222. and you do that,

  223. and we can do it.

  224. We can all jump up and down

  225. and do some chanting

  226. and get psyched

  227. and get pumped,

  228. and we can deal with it,

  229. and we can do things far better.

  230. But the Bible never sugarcoats things,

  231. and it's very interesting.

  232. You see,

  233. the beginning of hope

  234. is the acknowledgement

  235. of how bad the situation actually is.

  236. Don't think about how bad things are.

  237. The Bible doesn't say,

  238. okay,

  239. don't think about how bad things are.

  240. Don't think about the past.

  241. Repress those memories

  242. of how the temple looked.

  243. Because the temple

  244. had been destroyed 66 years ago,

  245. there would have been some people there in the crowd

  246. who were 71 or 72 or older.

  247. They would have remembered

  248. what Solomon's temple looked like,

  249. and even those who weren't there,

  250. they would have heard stories

  251. about how beautiful.

  252. They would have heard the Tanakh read,

  253. and they would have heard the stories

  254. about how this temple was so beautiful

  255. and the proportions

  256. and the skilled workmanship

  257. and the gold plating everywhere,

  258. and it would have just looked

  259. so majestic and glorious.

  260. And they're thinking about all that past.

  261. They have all that memory,

  262. and they're looking at how the present,

  263. the past was great,

  264. the present sucks.

  265. And as they're looking at these things,

  266. what's going through their mind

  267. is this is like nothing.

  268. Like, this is like crap.

  269. And God speaks right into it.

  270. He doesn't say,

  271. don't think in those terms.

  272. He says, don't you think

  273. that this is like nothing?

  274. You see,

  275. and this is another important thing

  276. for us to remember as Christians.

  277. It's one of the things

  278. that the gospel makes

  279. a very big difference for you and me.

  280. It's not only in the gospel,

  281. what really matters

  282. is that Jesus,

  283. when I put my hand in Jesus

  284. to ask him to be my Savior and my Lord,

  285. my hand will get weak often,

  286. but his hand will never get weak.

  287. He will never let me go.

  288. He will never, ever, ever, ever,

  289. ever let me go.

  290. And one of the other things

  291. which is so remarkable

  292. is it's not that he's going to

  293. never let me go

  294. because everything within me

  295. is just hunky-dory wonderful.

  296. But he knows the confusion,

  297. the problems,

  298. the doubts,

  299. the sin

  300. that I have in my own life,

  301. the sins of commission

  302. and the sins of omission.

  303. And still he loves me.

  304. He knew all of that

  305. when he died for me.

  306. Still he loves me.

  307. You see,

  308. the fact of the matter is

  309. is that part of the reason

  310. that many of us

  311. have problems praying

  312. is that we sort of think

  313. there's a certain type of way

  314. we're supposed to be

  315. and a certain type of wording

  316. that we're supposed to say

  317. before we can talk.

  318. But the fact of the matter is

  319. is that we say,

  320. okay, I guess I better pray.

  321. And the inside of our head,

  322. if people could look

  323. at the inside of our head,

  324. the inside of our head

  325. would look as if

  326. there were 50 bees in there

  327. all buzzing around

  328. like this constantly.

  329. And the fact of the matter is

  330. is each one of those bees

  331. is a thought.

  332. And that's what's going on

  333. inside of our head.

  334. Or that we're just feeling

  335. completely and utterly low

  336. or completely depressed

  337. or completely angry.

  338. And what we do

  339. is we try to repress that

  340. or pretend it's not there

  341. so that we can say the prayers

  342. that we're supposed to pray.

  343. But the fact of the matter is

  344. is that Jesus isn't going

  345. to let go of my hand

  346. if I let slip

  347. that my head is like 50 bees

  348. buzzing like crazy.

  349. He's not going to say,

  350. oh gosh,

  351. I'm going to let go

  352. of George's hand.

  353. No.

  354. He already knows it.

  355. In fact, prayer is the meeting

  356. place of the reality

  357. of who I am

  358. with the reality

  359. of who God is

  360. and the reality

  361. of his word

  362. that I can say,

  363. Lord, I can hardly put

  364. one thought together

  365. because that's what's

  366. going on in my mind.

  367. And in a sense,

  368. I don't know what these people

  369. are trying to pray,

  370. but the fact of the matter

  371. is is that God knows

  372. that they think this sucks.

  373. And when they look around

  374. the rubble,

  375. they think the future sucks.

  376. Yes.

  377. Gosh, the past was great.

  378. And that just makes you

  379. feeling more despondent,

  380. more depressed,

  381. more despairing.

  382. And God just names it.

  383. Listen to verse 3 again.

  384. What does he say?

  385. Not, oh, don't think

  386. about those things

  387. or oh, don't think about,

  388. oh, he says,

  389. who is left among you

  390. who saw this house

  391. in its former glory?

  392. How do you see it now?

  393. Is it not as nothing

  394. in your eyes?

  395. So what does God say

  396. into this situation

  397. after he's been realistic

  398. with them about

  399. what they're actually thinking,

  400. what they're actually feeling?

  401. Well, he walks towards

  402. the problem

  403. and then he says,

  404. we'll look at verse 4 and 5

  405. and then verse 6 and 9.

  406. He says some very remarkable

  407. things to them,

  408. which,

  409. and then actually

  410. in verses 6 to 9,

  411. we show up in the text,

  412. believe it or not.

  413. Yeah, actually,

  414. we show up in the text

  415. in between verse 6 and 9.

  416. But first,

  417. listen to what it says

  418. in verse 4 and 5.

  419. Okay, so it says,

  420. nothing in your eyes?

  421. Verse 4,

  422. yet now be strong,

  423. O Zerubbabel,

  424. declares the Lord.

  425. Be strong,

  426. O Joshua,

  427. son of Jehozadak,

  428. the high priest.

  429. Be strong,

  430. all you people of the land,

  431. declares the Lord.

  432. Work,

  433. not just work or else,

  434. but work,

  435. for I am with you,

  436. declares the Lord of hosts.

  437. According to the covenant,

  438. he's with them,

  439. how?

  440. He's with them

  441. according to the covenant

  442. that I made with you

  443. when you came out of Egypt.

  444. My spirit,

  445. my Holy Spirit,

  446. remains in your midst.

  447. Fear not.

  448. That's the first word

  449. that he says

  450. when they think

  451. the past is great,

  452. the present sucks,

  453. the future looks like more suck.

  454. And he,

  455. first of all,

  456. for some of them,

  457. there's this great resonance,

  458. an echo,

  459. of the book of Joshua.

  460. If you go back

  461. and read Joshua 1,

  462. in fact,

  463. I was sharing

  464. at the earlier service,

  465. when my kids were younger,

  466. we used to have these cassettes

  467. that we'd play all the time

  468. when we were driving.

  469. And they were GT

  470. and the Halo Express.

  471. I don't know

  472. if they're still available,

  473. but we loved them.

  474. My kids liked them

  475. at the time,

  476. and they were able

  477. to learn Bible memorizing verses.

  478. As soon as I see this,

  479. I'm thinking,

  480. have I not commanded

  481. you be strong and courageous?

  482. Have I not commanded

  483. you be strong and courageous?

  484. Do not.

  485. Anyway,

  486. I won't sing anymore for you.

  487. I'll drive you all away.

  488. But the fact of the matter

  489. is if you read Joshua 1,

  490. there's this constant refrain

  491. as they're about to enter

  492. into the promised land.

  493. They've ended the time

  494. in the tent.

  495. They're about to enter

  496. in the promised land,

  497. and God says to Joshua,

  498. be strong,

  499. be strong,

  500. be strong.

  501. And so here they are.

  502. They're embarked

  503. in the midst of the rubble.

  504. They're still under

  505. the Persian Empire,

  506. and they're about to,

  507. they've just begun the work

  508. of rebuilding the temple.

  509. And why does the temple matter?

  510. The temple,

  511. well,

  512. we'll get to that more

  513. in a moment.

  514. And God's word to them

  515. is be strong,

  516. be strong,

  517. be strong.

  518. And for some of them,

  519. they'd go,

  520. that just is like

  521. what God said to Joshua

  522. and the people of Israel

  523. as they're about to build.

  524. But there's something else

  525. which is here.

  526. It's not just that

  527. they're to work,

  528. but they're to work

  529. knowing that God is with them.

  530. And God isn't with them

  531. just sort of as some type

  532. of a presence

  533. or some type of judgmental presence

  534. or just some mere,

  535. like, power.

  536. No,

  537. he's present

  538. as the God

  539. who is in covenant

  540. with them.

  541. He has never,

  542. they have forgotten

  543. his promises.

  544. They have not wanted

  545. him to be with them,

  546. but he wants

  547. to be with them

  548. and that's what matters.

  549. And he's with them

  550. as the Lord.

  551. Now,

  552. this,

  553. we can't really get,

  554. I came up,

  555. hopefully this analogy

  556. will help you a little bit.

  557. All the gender neutral stuff

  558. and I don't know

  559. how many different pronouns

  560. there are.

  561. In some ways,

  562. it made me realize

  563. that in the Jewish people,

  564. there were a generic word

  565. for God.

  566. God.

  567. And then there was,

  568. you know,

  569. other names for specific gods.

  570. And then there was the Lord.

  571. And the significance is

  572. they don't use the word Elohim,

  573. which is generic God.

  574. They use the word Lord.

  575. And the difference between Elohim

  576. or generic God

  577. and Lord

  578. is the difference between

  579. my children referring to me

  580. as the sperm donor

  581. or dad.

  582. It's the difference between

  583. my wife referring to me

  584. as the sperm donor.

  585. Or husband.

  586. The difference is huge.

  587. I'm not just

  588. yet another sperm donor.

  589. I am the kid's dad.

  590. And they get to call me dad.

  591. They don't get to call me sperm donor.

  592. They get to call me dad.

  593. And these are relationship words.

  594. These are not only relationship words,

  595. but they're covenant words.

  596. And so all the way through this text,

  597. if you were,

  598. like an interesting activity for you

  599. would be to write out

  600. or type out

  601. all of Haggai

  602. or print it out

  603. and then go and take a marker

  604. and highlight

  605. every time the word Lord

  606. or Lord of hosts

  607. appears in the text.

  608. And it's just saturated with this.

  609. All of this speaking

  610. is he's using the words

  611. to remind them

  612. that he is not just

  613. the generic God.

  614. He is their God.

  615. That he has created

  616. a covenant for them.

  617. He has never given up

  618. on the covenant.

  619. They have given up on it,

  620. but he has never given up

  621. on the covenant

  622. with them

  623. and he will continue

  624. to fulfill it.

  625. And that is the God

  626. who has led them out

  627. of slavery and bondage

  628. that he did it

  629. by his own power

  630. and he led them out.

  631. He kept them

  632. in the wilderness.

  633. He brought them

  634. into the promised land

  635. and it's the same Lord

  636. who is in covenant

  637. with them,

  638. who's speaking with them

  639. and he says,

  640. what he's saying to them

  641. is that I don't care

  642. about the building

  643. so much

  644. is that the building

  645. is just a sign

  646. that you want me

  647. to be with you.

  648. It would be as if,

  649. you know,

  650. it's the same type

  651. of thing.

  652. If Louise and I

  653. were going to go out

  654. to go to a patio

  655. and as we're going out

  656. I'd said,

  657. I think I'm going to

  658. take my wedding ring off

  659. and leave it home.

  660. She'd go,

  661. what?

  662. I could take your,

  663. well actually

  664. she might not say anything.

  665. The whole evening

  666. we're in the patio

  667. she might not say anything

  668. and then I would get it.

  669. And you know what?

  670. All of you folks

  671. would say,

  672. you go girl.

  673. You lay into him.

  674. He deserves it.

  675. Why?

  676. Well because this little

  677. piece of metal

  678. isn't just a piece of metal.

  679. It's a sign

  680. that I'm married to Louise.

  681. And if she knew

  682. that I was going out

  683. taking the ring off

  684. she'd know that

  685. that was something wrong.

  686. She'd say,

  687. George,

  688. the ring is a sign

  689. that we're married.

  690. The ring is a sign

  691. that I matter to you.

  692. The ring is a sign

  693. that you have forsaken

  694. all others.

  695. And so that's what's going on

  696. with the temple.

  697. God says,

  698. the temple is a sign

  699. that you want me

  700. to be with you.

  701. I don't need a temple

  702. but it's a sign

  703. that you want me

  704. to be with you.

  705. That's why last week

  706. you have to put me first.

  707. And putting me first is,

  708. you know,

  709. like you could just

  710. well imagine,

  711. George,

  712. I'm not going to have,

  713. Louise could say to me,

  714. I'm not going to have

  715. the conversation with you

  716. until you put the ring

  717. back on your finger.

  718. And we're going to have

  719. a conversation.

  720. Put the ring on,

  721. let's talk.

  722. And God is saying,

  723. you've got to put me first.

  724. Build the temple.

  725. And be strong.

  726. Why?

  727. Because I am with you.

  728. Now some of us might say,

  729. well, George,

  730. that's all interesting.

  731. It's all this Jewish stuff

  732. that's all the way back.

  733. And some of you

  734. might be wondering,

  735. you know,

  736. why did they actually believe

  737. that this came from God?

  738. Like,

  739. why did the Jewish people

  740. put it in the Bible?

  741. Well,

  742. it's actually the next verses

  743. that both are why

  744. they would have put it

  745. in the Bible,

  746. understood that this was something

  747. that really did come from God,

  748. and it's also the next verses

  749. that give this whole other

  750. area of hope.

  751. Like,

  752. their hope in the midst

  753. of the fact that the past

  754. seemed to be great,

  755. the present sucks,

  756. and the future sucks.

  757. Part of the thing is,

  758. God just says to them,

  759. listen,

  760. I'm with you.

  761. I am your Lord.

  762. I am the God of covenant.

  763. You've got to just go ahead

  764. and work on those things.

  765. But then,

  766. the promise continues

  767. in a very different way

  768. that helps to shape

  769. our understanding of hope.

  770. We show up.

  771. Listen to what it says.

  772. Verses 6, 7, 8, and 9.

  773. For thus says the Lord of hosts,

  774. yet once more in a little while,

  775. and I will shake the heavens

  776. and the earth

  777. and the sea and the dry land,

  778. and I will shake all nations

  779. so that the treasures

  780. of all nations shall come in,

  781. and I will fill this house

  782. with glory,

  783. says the Lord of hosts.

  784. The silver is mine

  785. and the gold is mine,

  786. declares the Lord of hosts.

  787. The latter glory of this house

  788. shall be greater than the former,

  789. says the Lord of hosts.

  790. And in this place,

  791. I will give peace,

  792. declares the Lord of hosts.

  793. Now,

  794. just sort of not going that in order,

  795. one of the things

  796. which is really interesting there

  797. is when he says,

  798. the gold is mine

  799. and the silver is mine,

  800. because you see,

  801. one of the reasons

  802. they're so depressed

  803. about the present

  804. is,

  805. I mean,

  806. the original temple

  807. had all the gold,

  808. everything,

  809. everything was covered in gold.

  810. It would have looked

  811. just so spectacular.

  812. And they're looking at this,

  813. and they're going to be

  814. taking things of rubble.

  815. The Babylonians

  816. stripped the temple

  817. of everything,

  818. all the,

  819. anything of value

  820. in the entire land

  821. was taken to Babylon.

  822. The Ark of the Covenant

  823. was lost,

  824. taken to Babylon.

  825. Everything's been taken away.

  826. They're just dealing

  827. with rubble

  828. and some stones.

  829. But God says,

  830. listen,

  831. I don't care about gold.

  832. I own all the gold.

  833. You think I'm worried

  834. about gold in the temple?

  835. I own all the gold.

  836. You think I'm worried

  837. about silver?

  838. I own all the silver.

  839. I don't need any silver or gold.

  840. Like,

  841. it's not about silver or gold.

  842. Right?

  843. He said,

  844. build my house.

  845. But then there's

  846. all this language

  847. of shaking

  848. and I didn't know this

  849. before I started

  850. to work on the sermon,

  851. but it's a Hebrew idiom.

  852. It's a way of expressing

  853. what happens

  854. when God shows up.

  855. That God shakes.

  856. It's a theophany.

  857. That's the geeky

  858. theological word.

  859. It's theophany language.

  860. It's the language

  861. of God showing up.

  862. And if you go back

  863. and you read Exodus,

  864. when God shows up

  865. to make the covenant in Exodus,

  866. there's a lightning

  867. and there's earthquakes

  868. and all of that type of stuff.

  869. And even in the New Testament,

  870. when God shows up

  871. in different ways,

  872. like when Jesus appears

  873. to Saul of Tarsus

  874. on his way

  875. to kill Christians

  876. or throw them in jail,

  877. Jesus just shows up

  878. and the first thing

  879. that happens

  880. is everybody

  881. gets knocked off

  882. their horses.

  883. Everybody just gets

  884. knocked on the ground.

  885. In one of the,

  886. I think it's in John's gospel,

  887. when they come,

  888. Judas comes to capture

  889. Jesus

  890. and they say,

  891. are you Jesus?

  892. And he says,

  893. I am.

  894. And it just,

  895. the Holy Spirit,

  896. God shows up,

  897. the Holy Spirit just,

  898. they all fall down.

  899. They get shaken.

  900. They can't stand up.

  901. And it's this powerful image

  902. of that when the true God comes

  903. and things get shaken up.

  904. And so he says,

  905. I'm going to come

  906. and I'm going to be amongst,

  907. I'm going to shake up the earth

  908. and the heavens

  909. and everything.

  910. I'm going to shake up the nations

  911. so that the nations will come in

  912. and they're going to fill

  913. this house with glory.

  914. And there's going to be,

  915. in a sense,

  916. the treasures are going

  917. to be brought in

  918. and all of these types of things.

  919. And this is one of the reasons

  920. then why it is

  921. that they would have known

  922. that this was a prophecy

  923. that was actually from God

  924. that they had to keep

  925. and remember.

  926. Why is it?

  927. Well,

  928. because they knew

  929. that within a year or two

  930. of this prophecy,

  931. why were they able

  932. to finish the temple?

  933. Because the emperor of Persia

  934. paid for it.

  935. I mean,

  936. just think of it

  937. in today's terms,

  938. the Ayatollah of Iran

  939. says to the Jewish people,

  940. I want you to build my temple.

  941. And I'm giving you

  942. a blank check.

  943. And they would have gone,

  944. what?

  945. We don't have the resources

  946. to build the temple

  947. and the emperor of Persia

  948. just sent a directive

  949. to all of his bureaucrats

  950. in the region

  951. that I want the tax money

  952. from this region

  953. to build the temple

  954. for Yahweh?

  955. That's what happened.

  956. And fast forward,

  957. Herod's great temple

  958. that Jesus appeared at.

  959. Herod wasn't Jewish.

  960. An Edomite

  961. built

  962. one of the marvels

  963. of the ancient world.

  964. The temple

  965. to the God of Abraham,

  966. Isaac, and Jacob

  967. was built for

  968. by Edomites.

  969. And his friends

  970. were all pagans.

  971. Pagans

  972. paid for the temple

  973. to make it glorious.

  974. And here's where

  975. we show up

  976. in the story.

  977. You see,

  978. the Jewish people,

  979. in a sense,

  980. the Jewish people,

  981. they look at this

  982. and they just see

  983. that part about

  984. the shaking of the earth

  985. and they think

  986. that they didn't,

  987. it wasn't until

  988. Jesus came

  989. and authenticated himself

  990. and vindicated himself

  991. as the Messiah

  992. that we realize

  993. that God

  994. is fulfilling

  995. these prophecies

  996. in a series of stages

  997. that the full shaking

  998. of the heaven,

  999. I mean,

  1000. there was a shaking

  1001. that did happen

  1002. with Jesus

  1003. when the temple,

1004. the curtain in the temple

  1005. is torn in two

1006. from the top to the bottom

  1007. so that the access

  1008. to God

  1009. is now shown

  1010. to be open

  1011. because of Jesus

1012. having died upon the cross.

  1013. But we see there,

  1014. you know,

  1015. at the Easter sermon,

  1016. I talked about

1017. how in the Big Bang

  1018. you have

  1019. all of the universe,

  1020. all it emerges

1021. out of this Big Bang

  1022. in a moment

  1023. and everything

  1024. can be traced back

  1025. to this propulsion.

  1026. Things are moving

  1027. apart from each other

1028. and in the same way

  1029. that's what God does

  1030. on a Friday afternoon

1031. and an early Sunday morning

  1032. in Jerusalem

1033. where there is a man

  1034. that is rejected

  1035. by the people

  1036. and he dies

  1037. a shameful death

  1038. upon the cross

1039. and on the third day

  1040. the tomb is empty,

  1041. he appears alive

1042. and from this one little

  1043. tiny insignificant moment

  1044. there becomes an explosion

  1045. that nobody believed

  1046. on an Easter Sunday

  1047. all of a sudden

  1048. Mary knows.

  1049. And then some people

  1050. going to Emmaus

  1051. and then Peter knows

  1052. and then John knows

1053. and then the eleven disciples,

1054. ten of the disciples know

  1055. and then Jesus' mother

  1056. and brothers know

1057. and then five hundred know

  1058. and then with Pentecost

  1059. it continues to grow

1060. and from that one little moment

  1061. on Good Friday

  1062. and on Easter Sunday

1063. from that one insignificant event

  1064. that was so insignificant

  1065. that no historian

  1066. at the time

  1067. would have thought

  1068. that it mattered

  1069. there has been

  1070. this propulsive growth

  1071. of the Christian faith

1072. so that it is the only

  1073. universal faith

  1074. of every culture

1075. and it continues to grow

1076. all from that one moment

  1077. of propulsion.

1078. See the fact of the matter is

1079. what does it say here

  1080. in verse nine?

  1081. And in this place

  1082. I will give peace

  1083. declares the Lord.

  1084. In this place

  1085. the one greater

  1086. than the temple

1087. shows up at the temple.

1088. Jesus, the true meeting place

  1089. between the human being

  1090. and God.

  1091. The true temple

  1092. arrives at the temple

  1093. and the true sacrifice

  1094. that the temple

  1095. is all about

1096. is about to take place.

1097. That all of the sacrifices

  1098. specified in the laws

  1099. are just a foreshadowing

1100. of the one true Lamb of God

  1101. who would die

1102. for the sin of the world

1103. not only in the earth

  1104. but in the heavenlies

  1105. and that would be

  1106. the one sacrifice

1107. that makes all the sacrifices

  1108. that had happened before

1109. have any value or worth

1110. and that from now on

1111. that we no longer need

  1112. because the one complete

  1113. perfect Lamb of God

  1114. sacrificed himself

  1115. so that human beings

1116. could have peace with God.

1117. And so this text continues.

  1118. The even greater temple,

1119. the glory of God himself

  1120. showing up

  1121. is all fulfilled

  1122. in this text

  1123. which prophesies

  1124. that it's all fulfilled.

  1125. And even the nations

  1126. coming to Israel

  1127. is all fulfilled.

1128. If you have not yet

1129. had a chance to go to Israel,

  1130. someday go to Jerusalem.

1131. And it is so wonderful.

  1132. You go to Jerusalem

1133. and you see the pilgrims

  1134. from Uganda,

  1135. from Nigeria,

  1136. from South Africa,

  1137. from Korea,

  1138. from China,

  1139. from Argentina,

  1140. from Canada,

  1141. from the whole world

  1142. coming there

  1143. from all people groups.

  1144. And we know that

1145. at some point in time

  1146. Jesus will return

  1147. and all things

  1148. will be shaken

  1149. and there will be

  1150. a new heaven

  1151. and a new earth

1152. and God will dwell with us.

  1153. And it's all there

  1154. in this particular text.

  1155. Just sort of bringing

  1156. this whole thing

1157. to some type of closing.

  1158. See, here's the way

  1159. it works psychologically

  1160. for us

1161. and one of the reasons

1162. we need to come to church

1163. and gather around the word

1164. is to be reminded of it.

  1165. What's my fallback position?

  1166. I can't do it,

  1167. so I won't.

1168. What does the Bible say?

  1169. George, I want you

1170. to know that you can't.

1171. But he will and can

1172. so that I can say I will.

  1173. You see, this is,

  1174. and you know,

  1175. some of you know

  1176. I've just been so

  1177. enraptured with the story

1178. the last year or more

1179. of Jesus turning the water

  1180. into wine

1181. and it's more and more

  1182. just made me realize

  1183. that a big part

1184. of the whole Christian life

1185. is in that very first miracle

  1186. that Jesus ever did.

  1187. That, you know,

1188. Jesus asks for my obedience

1189. and he does the great work

  1190. of grace.

1191. If I just trust him

  1192. that he loves me

  1193. and he's asked me

1194. to be obedient with him

  1195. with my money

  1196. or with my sexuality

  1197. or with my time,

1198. that he does the great work

  1199. if I'm obedient.

  1200. Because in that miracle,

  1201. it's such a wonderful miracle,

  1202. Jesus asks the men

1203. to put water into a stone jar

1204. and take it to the feast.

1205. And that's all they do.

1206. He turns the water into wine.

  1207. And that's so much

1208. of what the Christian life

  1209. is like.

1210. George, just trust my word.

  1211. Obey me in this.

  1212. I'm going to turn

  1213. the water into wine.

  1214. You don't have,

1215. that's not even your job.

1216. You can't even do it, George.

  1217. Like, stop thinking

  1218. you can do it.

  1219. Don't be stupid.

  1220. Just obey.

  1221. It's my job

1222. to turn the water into wine.

1223. And that's the thing here

1224. that he gives the people hope.

  1225. He says, listen,

1226. just start building the temple.

1227. And they start to build the temple.

1228. And a year or two later,

  1229. they get the news.

1230. They're probably just doing it.

  1231. Who knows?

1232. They don't tell you about it.

  1233. They're just doing it.

1234. Read Ezra and all a little bit about it.

1235. And then they get the news

1236. that the emperor of Persia

1237. is going to give them

1238. all the money they need.

1239. And little did they know

  1240. that they're just fulfilling

  1241. what God has said

1242. and that by them fulfilling

  1243. what God has said,

  1244. the people would continue.

1245. And one day there would be a person,

  1246. in a sense,

  1247. from their loin

1248. in the line of Jeroboam,

  1249. who would come

  1250. and be the temple

1251. who is greater than the temple,

  1252. the true temple

1253. and that true peace would be made.

1254. And all of these great

  1255. and glorious things

  1256. will culminate

1257. with Jesus coming a second time.

  1258. And all they do

1259. is their tiny little bit

  1260. of obedience.

  1261. And God makes

  1262. this most remarkable wine

  1263. down the road

  1264. that they could never

  1265. possibly imagine.

  1266. And God invites us

1267. to do the same thing.

1268. Many of us are old enough

  1269. to remember

  1270. when churches

  1271. were way more full

1272. and there were way more churches

  1273. and youth groups

  1274. were way more big

1275. and it's really easy to say

  1276. what's the point

1277. of trying to build things?

  1278. The past was great,

  1279. the present sucks

  1280. and I don't know

  1281. all of the trends

  1282. and say the future

1283. is just going to suck.

  1284. And Jesus says,

  1285. build my church,

  1286. preach the gospel,

  1287. sing my praises,

  1288. invest in youth groups,

  1289. invest in ministry,

  1290. invest in missionaries,

  1291. proclaim Jesus.

  1292. You be obedient,

  1293. I'll make the wine.

  1294. Just one final thing

  1295. to close it.

1296. I was talking to somebody

  1297. this week

  1298. who's gone through

  1299. a long season

  1300. of great sickness.

1301. And this is one of the things

  1302. which is so wonderful

  1303. about biblical hope

  1304. and the reason

1305. we need to be reminded

  1306. about it.

  1307. See, the Christian hope

  1308. doesn't say,

  1309. hope in me

1310. and all your lesser hopes

  1311. I'm going to annihilate.

1312. No, the Bible doesn't say

  1313. you shouldn't plant tomatoes

  1314. and plants

1315. and hope that you'll get tomatoes.

  1316. It doesn't say

  1317. I shouldn't go to school

1318. and hope I get a good job.

  1319. It doesn't say

  1320. I should maybe hope

  1321. I can get married

  1322. and all that.

  1323. No, it doesn't.

1324. But what the Bible does

1325. is it both grounds your hope

  1326. and reorders your hope

  1327. when he is first.

1328. But the fact of the matter is

1329. there will come a point in time

  1330. when humanly speaking

  1331. there is no hope.

1332. There will come a point in time

  1333. when the cancer diagnosis

  1334. is final.

1335. There will come a point in time

  1336. when you will be

1337. in a very, very long season

  1338. of sickness

  1339. and when it's over

  1340. there still might be

  1341. some disability

1342. that might be the rest

  1343. of your days.

1344. Some of you might be

  1345. already facing that diagnosis

1346. at the beginning of dementia

  1347. the cancer of which

  1348. is now inoperable.

1349. But not only does the Bible

  1350. ground the small hopes

  1351. but the important hopes

1352. that make up our daily life

  1353. but the Bible portrays

1354. for the people of Jesus

  1355. who put their faith

  1356. and trust in Jesus

1357. that there is an ultimate

  1358. final hope

1359. that death is not final.

1360. And I was able to pray

  1361. with this person

  1362. and say,

1363. Father, thank you so much.

1364. Father, we ask for healing.

  1365. We ask for wisdom

  1366. for the doctors.

  1367. We ask for comfort

  1368. and healing of memories

1369. and the ability to handle

  1370. the situation

  1371. which is for you.

1372. But Father, most of all

1373. we ask that you fill us

  1374. both with hope.

1375. Father, it is so good to know

1376. that the day will come

  1377. when you,

1378. I was referring to the other person,

  1379. when we will have

  1380. resurrected bodies.

1381. And we will be in the new heaven

  1382. and the new earth.

1383. And that is our final hope.

1384. You see, because at the end of the day

  1385. the final hope

1386. for all of us as Christians

1387. is that even when we do come

1388. to the valley of the shadow of death

1389. and we have to walk

1390. and enter into the valley

1391. of the shadow of death

1392. and we will not emerge

1393. on this side of death

1394. but that we will actually walk

1395. into the valley of the shadow of death,

1396. that we do it in the hands of Jesus,

1397. that he is our victor,

1398. he is our great sacrifice.

  1399. And when we emerge

1400. from the valley of the shadow of death

  1401. on the far side

  1402. in the presence

  1403. of our heavenly Father,

1404. he will look at us

1405. with the world's biggest smile

  1406. and say,

1407. I am so glad you are with me.

  1408. Welcome.

1409. I love you so much.

1410. I have a kingdom prepared for you.

1411. I have a new body prepared for you.

1412. And every day that you have been mine,

1413. I have seen you face to face,

1414. but now today you see me face to face

  1415. for the first time.

1416. And your seeing me face to face

1417. will be the end of your story

1418. for the end of your days.

1419. And that is the final word

1420. for even the most least

  1421. and most broken Christian.

1422. that is our ultimate hope.

1423. It can never be taken away.

1424. I invite you to stand in closing.

  1425. Just stand.

  1426. Let's pray.

1427. Father, we give you thanks and praise

1428. that you have made us

  1429. as human beings

1430. to be able to hope in the future

1431. and that hope is in fact important for us

  1432. as being fruitful

1433. and being fruitful in the earth.

  1434. We thank you, Father.

1435. We thank you that even when we sinned

  1436. and rebelled

1437. and things got all broken

  1438. and twisted within us,

1439. that that didn't get taken away from us

1440. and we thank you, Father,

1441. that you are the God of hope,

1442. that our faith in Christ

1443. is to shape our hope

  1444. and ground our hope,

  1445. our main big hope

1446. that goes into all eternity

  1447. and those lesser hopes

  1448. that we are important

  1449. in day-to-day affairs

  1450. and week-to-week

  1451. and month-to-month.

1452. And Father, we ask that you make us

  1453. deeply aware of Jesus

1454. and what he did for us on the cross.

1455. We thank you that he will never let us go

1456. when we put our hand in his,

1457. that he will never let us go.

1458. And we give you thanks and praise

  1459. that in him,

1460. you have prepared for us

1461. an eternity beyond our worth,

  1462. beyond what we deserve,

  1463. purely as a gift,

1464. that we are your child

1465. and we will know you face-to-face.

  1466. And so, Father,

1467. we ask that you help us

  1468. to be more hopeful

1469. as we face each day,

1470. as we rebuild this church

  1471. and help the rebuilding

  1472. of other churches,

1473. as we spread the gospel

  1474. and share the gospel

  1475. and lift Jesus high.

1476. Father, fill us with hope.

1477. And we ask this in the name of Jesus,

1478. your Son and our Savior.

  1479. Amen.
