  1. Father, we give you thanks and praise that we can be in your presence.

  2. We give you thanks and praise that you desire to lavish your love upon us.

  3. We give you thanks and praise that we are not alone, but Jesus is with us, that the Holy Spirit is present.

  4. And we ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would work a deep work in our hearts

  5. so that we might receive in a very well from you this morning in a worthy manner and respond to you.

  6. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  7. Please be seated.

  8. You know, we live in an odd time.

  9. It seems to me, and maybe I'm just exaggerating a little bit,

  10. but it seems to me as if in many areas of life there's no mercy,

  11. that life has become harder,

  12. that it's not even a matter of three strikes and you're out.

  13. But you take one, you say the wrong thing on social media,

  14. you have the wrong, you get a tweet and you forward it and it's not the right one,

  15. or that if somebody finds something that you put on Instagram or Facebook

  16. two years ago, five years ago, ten years ago, fifteen years ago,

  17. and they find out about it,

  18. you're just in lots and lots of trouble.

  19. And it seems as if, I mean, there's lots of freedom in our culture,

  20. and it's not like people walk around in fear all the time,

  21. but it really does seem, at least in what we can sort of gather from the media,

  22. that it is, it becomes, we're in a time with less and less mercy,

  23. less and less mercy, and a real type of judgmentalism.

  24. I was about a year or so ago talking about this to somebody that I know quite well,

  25. and I guess I was a bit complaining about it because I know them very well

  26. and I was comfortable with them,

  27. and they just looked at me and said,

  28. George, you Christians invented it.

  29. Like, you just don't like it because now it's coming back to bite you.

  30. But you guys invented it,

  31. and now you're reaping what you sow,

  32. and, you know, you were in charge and you did it,

  33. showed no mercy.

  34. Now other people are in charge and they show no mercy,

  35. and that's just, like, in a sense, suck it up and deal with it.

  36. Now, at the time, I didn't really know what to say to them,

  37. and I want to really encourage you to know that I didn't know what to say to them

  38. because, you know, being a public Christian,

  39. letting people know that you're a Christian,

  40. sometimes there'll be pushback about that,

  41. and if you wait to be a public Christian

  42. until you know everything to say in response to every question,

  43. you'll never be a public Christian.

  44. In fact, maybe what you should do is just say,

  45. maybe we should all get T-shirts about public Christian,

  46. and the image should be of,

  47. I could be my face, could be yours,

  48. with the foot in the mouth,

  49. and that's just sort of a comforting thing to know

  50. that it's not the end of the world

  51. if you don't know what to say in response to something.

  52. Because often what it means is,

  53. you know what you could say later on, actually.

  54. Because now, I guess, if I could go back in time,

  55. I would just quote an authority that they would recognize,

  56. the who.

  57. And in their famous song,

  58. meet the new boss,

  59. same as the old boss,

  60. won't be fooled again.

  61. Anyway, that's probably not what I would say to them.

  62. But, you know, I think they're wrong, by the way.

  63. The other thing I should have said is that it's really,

  64. it's not that Christians invented it,

  65. but that it's a human problem,

  66. and that if you get beyond our ethnocentrism

  67. and look at other cultures,

  68. there's lots of times in history

  69. and lots of places in the world

  70. where there's very little mercy that's shown.

  71. But I'm not going to deny that it might very well be the case

  72. that there are many Christians today

  73. in North America and Canada and Ottawa,

  74. maybe even in this congregation,

  75. or many Christians in the past

  76. that have, in fact, shown very little mercy,

  77. been very judgmental,

  78. and very persecution-oriented.

  79. But the question is, you know,

  80. I guess for me,

  81. it's never a matter of

  82. what Christians do

  83. is what the Bible says,

  84. what Christ says.

  85. So is it, in fact,

  86. the case that Christians

  87. just need to get more in touch

  88. with things that are going on in our culture

  89. to try to fix this

  90. if it is, in fact,

  91. a bit of a Christian problem?

  92. Or is it really a matter

  93. that you need to get back

  94. to what Jesus says

  95. and to be corrected by the Bible?

  96. We're looking at a very, very old text today,

  97. and it actually talks about this issue

  98. of mercy and our narratives,

  99. et cetera, and all,

  100. and it gives great wisdom.

  101. So it'd be a great help to me

  102. if you would turn in your Bibles

  103. to Haggai chapter 2.

    Haggai 2 chapter mention

  104. Haggai chapter 2,

    Haggai 2 chapter mention

  105. and we're going to be looking

  106. at verses 10 to 19.

  107. Haggai chapter 2, verses 10 to 19.

    Haggai 2:10–19

  108. And here's how it begins.

  109. It goes like this.

  110. On the 24th day of the ninth month

  111. in the second year of Darius,

  112. the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet.

  113. Now just sort of pause there.

  114. Some of you are here,

  115. you're just jumping into this book.

  116. This is just a bit of a context about it.

  117. About 70 or so years prior to this,

  118. the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem,

  119. took away the leadership of the country,

  120. the king of the country,

  121. took them into exile,

  122. most of them into Babylon.

  123. And at the time of their destruction

  124. of the country,

  125. there were prophets like Jeremiah

  126. who prophesied and said

  127. that God was going to do

  128. a remarkable and miraculous thing,

  129. and that some approximately 70

  130. or two generations almost,

  131. 70 years later,

  132. God's going to bring some of the Jewish people

  133. back to Jerusalem

  134. and the temple will be rebuilt.

  135. And then what happened

  136. is the Babylonians are in power

  137. for quite a few decades,

  138. but then the Persians

  139. defeat the Babylonian empire

  140. and Babylonians

  141. and take over their empire.

  142. And that's where Darius comes in.

  143. Darius is the emperor,

  144. the Persian emperor.

  145. And, you know,

  146. you can't,

  147. to try to get a bit of a sense

  148. of the shock of the book of Haggai,

  149. just understand that we now call Persia

  150. as Iran.

  151. And what happened

  152. is that as soon as,

  153. very shortly after,

  154. Persia took over the empire,

  155. God did a remarkable work

  156. in the heart

  157. of this Persian emperor

  158. because he gave permission

  159. for the Jewish people,

  160. some of the Jewish people,

  161. to go back

  162. and to rebuild Jerusalem.

  163. He wanted it.

  164. It would be as if

  165. the Ayatollah of Iran today

  166. said that he wanted

  167. to rebuild Jerusalem.

  168. And just as that would be

  169. a complete shock,

  170. it would be front page news.

  171. Ayatollah of Iran says

  172. the temple must be rebuilt

  173. or he wants the Jewish people

  174. to thrive.

  175. It was just as big of a shock

  176. and just as big of a miracle

  177. really back then.

  178. So about 16 years prior to this,

  179. some of the Jewish people

  180. have returned to Jerusalem.

  181. Jerusalem is in rubbles.

  182. If you want to get a picture for this,

  183. if you're a very visual person,

  184. picture Aleppo.

  185. Picture parts of Syria

  186. with all the rubbles

  187. and that's what Jerusalem looks like.

  188. And so some of the Jewish people

  189. have returned

  190. and they start to restore the temple

  191. but there's local pushback,

  192. very serious,

  193. hardcore local pushback

  194. and they chicken out

  195. and they stop all the work.

  196. And so what they've done

  197. for the intervening time period

  198. is they've worked

  199. on their own prosperity

  200. and their own peace

  201. but they've also maintained

  202. the religious celebrations

  203. and festivals

  204. and stuff like that

  205. but they've turned inward

  206. and they've stopped

  207. all of the work

  208. on the temple.

  209. And then about four months

  210. prior to this,

  211. in September of 520 BC,

  212. we know the dates

  213. because of the linking

  214. to Darius

  215. and all of that type of stuff.

  216. Haggai gives this prophetic word

  217. that shocks them

  218. and we'll talk about this

  219. a bit more in a moment

  220. because it is relevant

  221. to this bit

  222. and they start to restore

  223. the temple

  224. and then about two months

  225. after that

  226. or approximately two months

  227. before this,

  228. there's another set

  229. of prophetic words

  230. and now there's this third

  231. set of prophetic words.

  232. So that's what's going on here,

  233. just a bit of a context.

  234. Jerusalem is in rubbles.

  235. There are some Jewish people back.

  236. They're under Persian authority

  237. and they've started

  238. to restore the temple

  239. four months in

  240. and this is now a word

  241. that comes from God

  242. to the Jewish people

  243. but it's going to come through

  244. first asking a couple

  245. of questions of the priests.

  246. Here's how it goes.

  247. Look at verse 11.

  248. Thus says the Lord of hosts,

  249. ask the priest about the law.

  250. If someone carries holy meat

  251. in the fold of his garment

  252. and touches with his fold,

  253. bread or stew

  254. or wine or oil

  255. or any kind of food,

  256. does it become holy?

  257. The priest answered

  258. and said no.

  259. Then Haggai said,

  260. if someone who is unclean

  261. by contact with a dead body

  262. touches any of these,

  263. does it become unclean?

  264. The priest answered and said,

  265. yes,

  266. it does become unclean.

  267. Then Haggai answered and said,

  268. so is it with this people

  269. and with this nation

  270. before me,

  271. declares the Lord,

  272. and so with every work

  273. of their hands.

  274. And what they offer there

  275. is unclean.

  276. So just sort of pause here

  277. for a second.

  278. If you are like most Canadians,

  279. as soon as you start getting

  280. to clean and unclean,

  281. your eyes glaze over

  282. and you lose the plot

  283. because it doesn't really

  284. make much sense

  285. and it just seems like

  286. a weird, bizarre type of thing.

  287. And it's here where

  288. it touches in this whole area

  289. of our cultural narratives

  290. because we start to see what,

  291. so some things are clean

  292. and some things are unclean.

  293. Like, George,

  294. this just seems exactly

  295. like religion.

  296. It's so lame

  297. and so random.

  298. Like, really?

  299. Just because you touch

  300. a dead body,

  301. you've become unclean?

  302. Like, that just sounds weird.

  303. And so we interpret

  304. this whole story

  305. from this perspective

  306. of God being,

  307. like there's been

  308. no mercy shown

  309. and it can just be

  310. as simple as

  311. you like the wrong

  312. Hollywood star

  313. a day after a revelation

  314. or something like that

  315. and it's just,

  316. you're being picked on by God

  317. and this whole language

  318. of clean and unclean

  319. sounds like

  320. very, very exclusive

  321. and insiders

  322. and outsiders

  323. and just everything

  324. about religion

  325. which is bad

  326. and we hear this

  327. because we have

  328. our cultural narrative.

  329. We read the text

  330. and that's how we interpret it

  331. but that's not

  332. what's going on at all.

  333. You see,

  334. what we don't think of

  335. is that the Bible

  336. has a very, very

  337. different narrative

  338. and this story

  339. is part of a very,

  340. very, very,

  341. very different narrative

  342. and the narrative

  343. is this.

  344. The narrative of the Bible

  345. is that there is a God

  346. that does exist,

  347. the triune God

  348. and this God,

  349. well,

  350. he made human beings,

  351. he made creation

  352. not because he was lonely,

  353. not because he was bored,

  354. not because he wanted food,

  355. not because he wanted slaves,

  356. not because he wanted somebody to love

  357. and had a type of needy love,

  358. like we hate being around

  359. needy love people

  360. unless they're our brand new baby

  361. or something like that

  362. where you want them to be needy,

  363. but you know,

  364. for an adult to be needy love

  365. and it's just sort of repelling

  366. and it's not as if God

  367. did anything like that

  368. but we all know

  369. that part of the nature of love

  370. is that love is expansive,

  371. love is creative,

  372. love gives,

  373. love forgives,

  374. love loves to see more love,

  375. that it's just something

  376. about the nature of love

  377. and the God who is love

  378. made human beings

  379. in his own image

  380. so that he could lavish

  381. his love upon them.

  382. The living God

  383. created all things,

  384. created human beings

  385. so that he could lavish

  386. his love upon them

  387. but human beings

  388. turned from God

  389. and wanted to be

  390. like God themselves.

  391. They turned their back

  392. on God's love

  393. and as a result of

  394. turning their back

  395. on God's love,

  396. well, shame comes

  397. into the world

  398. and messing up

  399. comes into the world

  400. and sickness

  401. comes into the world

  402. and death

  403. comes into the world

  404. and oppression

  405. comes into the world

  406. and racism

  407. and hatred

  408. and authoritarianism

  409. and no mercy

  410. comes into the world

  411. and human beings

  412. are sort of trapped in this

  413. and so the big story

  414. of the Bible,

  415. if you want to read

  416. from Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  417. right up into the gospel

  418. and right up to the end

  419. of the story,

  420. the big narrative

  421. of the Bible

  422. is the narrative

  423. of the different ways

  424. that God tries

  425. to get the attention

  426. of people

  427. in their mess,

  428. in their shame,

  429. in their confusion,

  430. in their successes,

  431. in their failures,

  432. in their shame,

  433. in their despondency,

  434. in their despair,

  435. that this God

  436. who is love

  437. relentlessly pursues

  438. human beings

  439. to get their attention

  440. so that they would turn

  441. and allow God

  442. to do what only God

  443. could do

  444. to have them

  445. become his people,

  446. his children,

  447. his precious treasure

  448. so he can lavish

  449. his love upon them.

  450. That's the big story

  451. of the Bible.

  452. a relentless pursuit

  453. by God

  454. to love you.

  455. And yes,

  456. he knows

  457. that you're not perfect.

  458. He knows what

  459. your bank balance is

  460. for those of us

  461. who have bad bank balances.

  462. He knows your good

  463. bank balances too

  464. for those of you

  465. who have those.

  466. But he knows

  467. he knows you

  468. and he wants

  469. to lavish

  470. his love upon you.

  471. Well,

  472. how does that fit in

  473. with this weird language

  474. of clean and unclean?

  475. And if you got lost

  476. in the whole story

  477. and you don't have

  478. your Bibles open

  479. to look at it,

  480. basically what the Bible

  481. is saying is this,

  482. is you go and perform

  483. a sacrifice

  484. and as part of the sacrifice

  485. there's an animal

  486. and as part of the sacrifice

  487. of the animal,

  488. sometimes there's some

  489. of that stuff

  490. of the sacrifice

  491. of the grain

  492. or the animal

  493. or whatever

  494. that the priest

  495. is able to keep

  496. to eat.

  497. And so the priest

  498. has done this sacrifice

  499. that God has set for

  500. and as he's walking away

  501. with his sacrifice,

  502. he comes up,

  503. imagine we go back in time

  504. and he touches Jono

  505. and the question is,

  506. does the sacrifice

  507. is holy,

  508. it's clean,

  509. and if now the priest

  510. touches Jono,

  511. does Jono become holy?

  512. And then if I go up

  513. and I touch Andrew,

  514. does Andrew become holy?

  515. Does Daniel and Alexander

  516. become holy?

  517. And the priest says,

  518. no, the Bible says

  519. they don't become holy,

  520. they're just,

  521. they're completely unchanged

  522. by you touching them.

  523. And he says,

  524. okay, well,

  525. let's do another example.

  526. What happens, George,

  527. if there's a dead body

  528. and you touch the dead body

  529. and according to the Bible

  530. what happens is

  531. if I touch the dead body

  532. I become unclean.

  533. So what happens then

  534. if I go and touch Jono

  535. and Andrew

  536. and Daniel and Alexander?

  537. Well, according to the Bible

  538. they all become unclean.

  539. And then he says,

  540. listen,

  541. because of what's been going on

  542. with you people,

  543. your whole land is unclean.

  544. So what's going on

  545. with this whole thing?

  546. So here's part of the thing

  547. that you need to understand.

  548. Remember,

  549. what's the big story?

  550. The big story

  551. is that God knows your mess,

  552. he knows your sin,

  553. he knows your shame.

  554. There's this relentless seeking of you

  555. to love you,

  556. to pour out his love upon you.

  557. That's the big story of the Bible.

  558. So how does this fit?

  559. Well,

  560. the first thing that wants to fit

  561. is that no human being

  562. can make themselves holy.

  563. That only the holy one

  564. can make you holy.

  565. And you see,

  566. that's why it's connected

  567. to the sacrifice.

  568. That the sacrifice

  569. is what in a sense

  570. is making this particular thing

  571. holy or clean.

  572. But you can't then just go say,

  573. oh wow,

  574. I have a little magic wand

  575. that makes things holy and clean

  576. and I can run around

  577. and touch things.

  578. No, no,

  579. that's not how it works.

  580. That's taking you far away

  581. from the fact

  582. that God has to provide the means.

  583. You see,

  584. you can't sanctify yourself.

  585. You can't make yourself holy.

  586. You can't make yourself

  587. be in the realm of God

  588. to have God as your God

  589. for him to lavish his love upon you.

  590. You can't do that by yourself.

  591. You need God

  592. to make you his own.

  593. You need God

  594. to make you holy.

  595. You need God

  596. to make you clean.

  597. You need God to do that.

  598. And actually,

  599. if you understand this

  600. for a second,

  601. that rather than this

  602. being exclusive,

  603. this is the most inclusive news

  604. in the world.

  605. No ideology,

  606. no religion,

  607. no spirituality,

  608. no nation

  609. is so inclusive.

  610. And that's one of the reasons

  611. why there is no body

  612. more multicultural,

  613. multi-ethnic

  614. than is this profound mission

  615. of God

  616. that is called the gospel

  617. and the Christian church

  618. that looks at people

  619. of all income levels,

  620. all IQ levels,

  621. all handicap-enabled levels,

  622. all colors,

  623. all nations,

  624. and says,

  625. did you know there's a God

  626. who loves you

  627. who wants to lavish his love upon you

  628. and he wants to have you be his?

  629. And you know what?

  630. He knows all about your thing

  631. and he knows that you can't make yourself

  632. in his kingdom of love.

  633. Love has to open the door for love.

  634. Holiness has to open the door

  635. to holiness

  636. and to bring you in.

  637. And so in a sense,

  638. all of this language

  639. of the clean and the unclean

  640. was trying to communicate

  641. these two things

  642. that you can't make yourself holy.

  643. You need to have God make you holy

  644. and you need to receive that humbly

  645. and that this,

  646. rather than being exclusive,

  647. is the most wonderful,

  648. inclusive news in the world

  649. because he doesn't look at your power,

  650. your prestige,

  651. or anything like that.

  652. In fact,

  653. the only,

  654. it's like,

  655. what's the one criteria

  656. you need to be admitted

  657. to be in the hospital?

  658. Well,

  659. that you're sick.

  660. That's the only criteria.

  661. The only criteria

  662. to come to receive grace from God

  663. is that you need grace.

  664. That's everybody.

  665. It's actually very,

  666. very,

  667. and so the sacrifices

  668. of the clean and unclean

  669. is to communicate.

  670. You know what's the other thing

  671. to communicate

  672. is to,

  673. once again,

  674. and you can go back

  675. into the food laws,

  676. if we did a sermon series

  677. in Leviticus,

  678. we could talk about that,

  679. is that all of these

  680. different languages

  681. of clean and unclean,

  682. holy and unholy,

  683. is trying to communicate,

  684. to get into the imagination,

  685. to get into,

  686. in a sense,

  687. into the bones

  688. and the imagination

  689. and the narratives

  690. and the story

  691. of the people,

  692. what it's like

  693. to be under God's reign,

  694. to be under God's rule,

  695. to be his precious

  696. possession and treasure.

  697. And a dead body

  698. is dead.

  699. To touch the dead body,

  700. in a sense,

  701. means you are being

  702. reminded of the fact

  703. that you are

  704. in the realm of death.

  705. But to be under

  706. God's authority,

  707. God is the God

  708. of living.

  709. He's the God of life.

  710. He's the God of life

  711. who gives life.

  712. He is the God of life

  713. who desires to give you

  714. a life that is his,

  715. that will go on

  716. into all time.

  717. And so by these things

  718. of the different foods

  719. and these different things,

  720. it's trying to structure

  721. and form the imagination

  722. of the people

  723. at the level

  724. of their reflexes,

  725. their imagination,

  726. their bones,

  727. their reflexes

  728. about what it's like

  729. to be close to God.

  730. That the closer you get

  731. to the true and living God,

  732. that when he opens

  733. the way for you

  734. to get close to him,

  735. the closer you get to him,

  736. the closer you're

  737. getting to life.

  738. Because he is not

  739. the God of the dead,

  740. he is the God of life,

  741. the living.

  742. To become close to him

  743. is to get close

  744. to life.

  745. So you say,

  746. okay, well George,

  747. that's very interesting,

  748. but what's this weird stuff

  749. about then everything they do?

  750. You're saying that

  751. all their work,

  752. that all their worship,

  753. that it's unclean?

  754. Like what's going on here

  755. with this?

  756. That doesn't make any sense

  757. from what you said,

  758. but it actually makes,

  759. here's some of you

  760. who were here last week.

  761. By the way,

  762. people remember 10%

  763. of what they hear,

  764. so I sort of think

  765. I could preach

  766. the same sermon 10 times

  767. before everybody's heard it once.

  768. And so some things

  769. could be repeated

  770. more than once,

  771. that's fine.

  772. But so just here

  773. to try to understand

  774. what's going on.

  775. So remember,

  776. what has happened

  777. is they've come back to

  778. God does this remarkable miracle.

  779. He gets the Ayatollah

  780. of Iran to say,

  781. I want to see Jewish people

  782. in Jerusalem with a temple.

  783. Like, whoa,

  784. that should knock your socks off

  785. in terms of a remarkable thing.

  786. Just knock your socks off,

  787. blow your hair back.

  788. Like,

  789. that's just crazy.

  790. But they go

  791. and they start to rebuild

  792. the temple

  793. and a couple of people say,

  794. I don't know,

  795. you know,

  796. it looks ugly,

  797. you look ugly,

  798. I don't like you,

  799. I hate your guts,

  800. and they just turn away.

  801. And so they turn away

  802. and they just say,

  803. I'm just going to make

  804. my own house really nice.

  805. Boom,

  806. we're going to keep the worship

  807. and all of that type of stuff.

  808. And so,

  809. you know,

  810. so what's going on here?

  811. So now they're coming in,

  812. they're finally starting to build

  813. and he's trying to make a point

  814. that's going to make up in here.

  815. But here's the point.

  816. Imagine for a moment

  817. that I decided

  818. it's really time for me

  819. to get into a deeper relationship

  820. with my wife,

  821. Louise.

  822. You know,

  823. better than we have right now.

  824. And so I consult

  825. some counselors,

  826. I call up,

  827. you know,

  828. some other people

  829. and I say,

  830. what's the type of conversations

  831. I should have?

  832. You know,

  833. what should I be open about?

  834. What should I be vulnerable with?

  835. Like,

  836. how would a really good conversation

  837. like that go?

  838. And I get it all

  839. and I learn it

  840. and I think,

  841. okay,

  842. I'm going to ace this,

  843. okay?

  844. So we get in the car

  845. to go to the restaurant

  846. and have this conversation

  847. and before we get into the car

  848. I take my wedding band off

  849. and I leave it at home.

  850. How many of you think

  851. Louise would notice

  852. in the car

  853. that I didn't have

  854. my wedding band on?

  855. Every single one of you

  856. would know

  857. that Louise will notice.

  858. How do you think

  859. my conversation with Louise

  860. will go in the restaurant?

  861. I've consulted

  862. the best psychologists

  863. and marriage therapists

  864. in the world.

  865. I have all the things

  866. that I need to say

  867. to have the conversation

  868. go well.

  869. Do you think

  870. my conversation

  871. will go well?

  872. No.

  873. In fact,

  874. you know what?

  875. If 10 minutes

  876. into the meal

  877. Louise was to send

  878. a message

  879. to the whole congregation

  880. and just say,

  881. George is having

  882. a conversation

  883. with me at a restaurant

  884. and he took

  885. his wedding band off.

  886. Like,

  887. what do you think

  888. is going on?

  889. And you'd all go,

  890. girl,

  891. let him have it.

  892. Like,

  893. he's,

  894. what's going wrong

  895. with George?

  896. He's nuts.

  897. Okay?

  898. Like,

  899. there's something bad

  900. going on here,

  901. right?

  902. Because I took

  903. my wedding band off.

  904. So here's the thing

  905. connected to the text

  906. to make us understand this.

  907. Remember,

  908. what does God say?

  909. The whole big narrative

  910. of the story

  911. is that I want

  912. to be with you.

  913. I want to have you

  914. as my precious treasure.

  915. I want to give

  916. my life to you

  917. and have your life

  918. come under mine.

  919. I want to lavish

  920. love and life upon you.

  921. That's the desire

  922. of my heart.

  923. That's my,

  924. that's what I want to do.

  925. And so you gather together

  926. and the temple's

  927. not being rebuilt.

  928. And God doesn't need

  929. a temple.

  930. Like,

  931. the temple is like nothing.

  932. Just like,

  933. you know,

  934. in a sense,

  935. Louise doesn't need the,

  936. I don't know,

  937. like the three dollars

  938. of gold in my ring

  939. or anything like that.

  940. Like,

  941. she doesn't need it.

  942. But the ring symbolizes

  943. our marriage.

  944. The ring symbolizes

  945. that I'm married to Louise,

  946. that I first,

  947. I'm trying to

  948. and successfully

  949. forsaking all others

  950. to just be with her,

  951. that I want to be with her,

  952. that we're husband and wife.

  953. And to take it off

  954. in public

  955. is to say something

  956. very,

  957. very different.

  958. And if you go back

  959. and you read Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  960. and Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  961. especially chapter 2,

  962. you see that basically

  963. what's going on

  964. is that the Garden of Eden

  965. is in a sense

  966. the temple.

  967. It's the dwelling place

  968. of God.

  969. And that the point

  970. of the Garden of Eden

  971. is that it would eventually

  972. take up the whole earth.

  973. And who knows,

  974. if we hadn't fallen,

  975. maybe it would take up

  976. the moon and Mars

  977. and Saturn

  978. and some other planets.

  979. And because God

  980. doesn't need

  981. a particular place,

  982. but the temple

  983. represents God's presence

  984. in their midst

  985. as their God

  986. that it matters to them.

  987. In a sense,

  988. the temple is the ring.

  989. So just as

  990. they can do

  991. all the sacrifices

  992. they want

  993. and they could be

  994. the most assiduous

  995. Jewish people

  996. in the history

  997. of the planet

  998. with getting everything

  999. according to every word

  1000. in Leviticus

  1001. and Exodus

  1002. and Deuteronomy,

  1003. but they don't have

  1004. the temple.

1005. And just as I could

  1006. have a conversation,

  1007. I could have

  1008. psychologists in my little,

  1009. I have an earpiece

1010. telling me what to say.

  1011. Wouldn't matter.

  1012. Then they realize,

  1013. what's going on?

1014. He took off his ring.

  1015. George,

  1016. put your bleepity,

  1017. bleep, bleep, bleep,

  1018. ring back on

  1019. right now.

  1020. And then we'll

  1021. coach you through

  1022. apologies

  1023. and repentance.

1024. And all of that stuff.

  1025. That's what's going on here.

  1026. That's why it's

  1027. them functionally showing

  1028. that they don't want

  1029. God in their midst.

  1030. And so what's happened

  1031. to the Jewish people,

  1032. and that's what's going

  1033. to be very relevant

  1034. right now

1035. in the next little bit,

1036. is that four months earlier

  1037. their heart was pierced.

1038. And this is part of,

  1039. you see,

  1040. the grace that God

  1041. doesn't say,

  1042. well, okay,

  1043. I'm waiting for

1044. a really nice big house

  1045. and after I get

  1046. the big house

  1047. that I'm going

  1048. to love you.

  1049. No, no, no.

1050. As soon as he senses

  1051. because he's God,

  1052. the turning of their

  1053. heart towards him

  1054. and their own

  1055. little efforts

  1056. that picking up

  1057. that first piece

  1058. of rubble

1059. and trying to put it

  1060. in the right spot

  1061. to rebuild,

  1062. then there's the turn

  1063. in his relationship

  1064. with him.

  1065. You see,

  1066. because all of the

  1067. sacrifices,

  1068. all of them

  1069. show God's grace.

1070. And as we now know

  1071. as Christians,

  1072. all of them point

  1073. to the great sacrifice

  1074. that Jesus

  1075. is going to perform

1076. for us on the cross,

1077. that he is in fact

  1078. the Lamb of God

  1079. who takes away

1080. the sin of the world.

1081. They all show his grace.

  1082. And God doesn't wait

1083. for them to have measured up

  1084. because why?

  1085. He knows we can't.

  1086. And he just wants

  1087. to lavish his love.

  1088. And he takes that

1089. first turning of our heart

1090. to begin to have a change

  1091. to be with him

  1092. in a different way.

  1093. So mindful of that,

  1094. let's listen to what

  1095. it said here,

  1096. verses 15 and following.

  1097. Now then consider

  1098. from this day onward.

  1099. Now, yeah,

  1100. I'll finish reading it.

  1101. Now then consider,

  1102. verse 15,

1103. consider from this day onward.

  1104. Before stone was placed

  1105. upon stone

1106. in the temple of the Lord,

  1107. how did you fare?

1108. When one came to a heap

  1109. of 20 measures,

  1110. there were but 10.

1111. When one came to the wine vat

  1112. to draw 50 measures,

  1113. there were but 20.

  1114. I struck you

  1115. and all the products

  1116. of your toil

  1117. with blight

  1118. and with mildew

  1119. and with hail,

1120. yet you did not turn

  1121. to me,

  1122. declares the Lord.

1123. Consider from this day onward,

  1124. from the 24th day

  1125. of the ninth month,

  1126. since the day

  1127. that the foundation

  1128. of the Lord's temple

  1129. was laid,

1130. or a better way to say it

  1131. is from the day

  1132. that the restoration began,

  1133. consider,

  1134. is the seed yet

  1135. in the barn?

  1136. Indeed,

  1137. the vine,

  1138. the fig tree,

  1139. the pomegranate,

  1140. and the olive tree

  1141. have yielded nothing,

1142. but from this day on

  1143. I will bless you.

  1144. Now,

1145. a couple of things here

  1146. to sort of,

  1147. you know,

  1148. to wrap this up.

  1149. So,

1150. the first thing is this,

  1151. that,

  1152. like,

  1153. I could well imagine

1154. if I was to say

  1155. to a barista,

  1156. like,

1157. for a lot of people,

  1158. I mean,

  1159. part of this thing

  1160. is just all weird.

  1161. The idea that somehow

  1162. or another

  1163. that God

  1164. actually actively

  1165. stopped the crop

  1166. from being good

  1167. and the wine

  1168. from being good,

  1169. and somehow or another

  1170. if he stops this,

1171. he thinks it's going to have

  1172. people turn to him.

  1173. And,

  1174. like,

  1175. you could well imagine

  1176. people say,

  1177. George,

  1178. you know,

  1179. if I found out

  1180. that somebody

  1181. was stealing my tips,

  1182. I'm a barista,

1183. or just taking the tips

  1184. and throwing them

  1185. out the window

  1186. so nothing happened,

  1187. like,

  1188. George,

  1189. why do you think

  1190. that would make,

1191. I'd be mad at that person.

  1192. Shouldn't they be mad

  1193. at him?

  1194. At God?

  1195. Rather than actually

  1196. turn to him?

  1197. Well,

  1198. you see,

  1199. that's,

  1200. once again,

  1201. it's the case of

  1202. we're bringing

  1203. our narrative

  1204. to the story,

  1205. not the biblical narrative.

  1206. And,

  1207. in our narrative,

  1208. it would look

  1209. as if,

1210. if I just sort of

  1211. went in

  1212. and started taking

  1213. money from somebody

  1214. or other

  1215. and making you

  1216. not get a promotion

  1217. or something like that,

  1218. that you'd be right

1219. to get mad at me,

1220. but that's not the narrative

  1221. that's going on here.

  1222. The narrative

  1223. that's going on here

  1224. is that God wants

1225. to be almost as if

  1226. he's their husband.

1227. He wants to be as if

  1228. he's their dad.

  1229. He wants to be

  1230. in a covenant

  1231. relationship

  1232. that's real

  1233. where he can lavish

  1234. his love upon them.

  1235. So,

  1236. here's a different story.

  1237. If you heard tonight,

  1238. you go home,

  1239. and you heard tonight

  1240. that your best friend,

  1241. that she found out

  1242. that her husband

  1243. was being unfaithful

  1244. to her,

1245. and when he came home,

  1246. he discovered

1247. that she had locked him

  1248. out of the house

  1249. and changed the locks.

  1250. would you think

  1251. she had done

  1252. the right thing

  1253. or the wrong thing?

  1254. You'd say,

  1255. you go, girl.

  1256. Don't let that guy

  1257. take advantage of you.

  1258. You need to affect

1259. where he can sleep tonight.

1260. You need to diminish him

  1261. so he understands

  1262. this is serious

1263. so he can return to you.

  1264. That's exactly

  1265. what God did.

  1266. He wants to lavish

  1267. his love upon them.

  1268. He does something

  1269. to get their attention.

  1270. You see,

  1271. the narrative

  1272. of the story

  1273. is of God

  1274. desiring to lavish

  1275. his love upon you.

  1276. And the other thing

  1277. about this

  1278. is that

  1279. two things

  1280. just in closing.

  1281. The first thing

  1282. is this.

  1283. Sanctity

  1284. or holiness

  1285. or being God

  1286. is its own reward

  1287. but it always brings

  1288. other goods

  1289. in its train.

  1290. Sanctity

  1291. is its own reward

  1292. or holiness

  1293. or being God

  1294. is its own reward

  1295. but it always brings

  1296. other goods

  1297. in its train.

  1298. And the other one

  1299. is this

  1300. that the triune God

  1301. defines blessing

  1302. not you

  1303. or Canada

  1304. or Hollywood

  1305. or Bay Street

  1306. or Wall Street.

  1307. See,

  1308. that's why people

  1309. who take this

  1310. as a health

  1311. and wealth gospel

  1312. type of direction

  1313. that somehow

  1314. or another

  1315. God's going to

  1316. give them new cars

  1317. he's going to

  1318. give them this

  1319. he's going to

  1320. give them that

  1321. that they're not

  1322. reading the text

  1323. right

  1324. because God

  1325. defines blessing

  1326. and holiness

  1327. always has

  1328. its own rewards.

  1329. I'll give you

  1330. just two

  1331. illustrations

  1332. to try to

  1333. try to get you

  1334. to bring this

  1335. home to you

  1336. by what I mean

  1337. with them.

  1338. When I was

  1339. in my rural parish

  1340. in Eganville

  1341. I was there

  1342. from 88 to 95

  1343. and one of the

  1344. things that the

  1345. church did in

  1346. Eganville

  1347. is they

  1348. would tire

  1349. themselves out

  1350. about three times

  1351. a year

  1352. they would do

  1353. these huge

  1354. fundraising things

  1355. to try to

  1356. make money

  1357. from the community

  1358. to keep the

  1359. church open.

  1360. It's a very

  1361. common thing

  1362. if you talk

  1363. to some old

  1364. Anglicans

  1365. who were Anglicans

  1366. back in the late

  1367. 80s

  1368. the early 90s

  1369. they'd say

  1370. yeah yeah yeah

  1371. I mean this

  1372. church we had

  1373. a strawberry

  1374. social

  1375. we had

  1376. another thing

  1377. in November

  1378. I think we had

  1379. a third thing

  1380. we had at least

  1381. three things

  1382. a year.

  1383. So one of the

  1384. things that I did

  1385. to the congregation

1386. is I was part of

  1387. that first you have

  1388. to convert them

  1389. and let them know

  1390. the gospel

  1391. and then in light

  1392. of the gospel

  1393. say do you really

  1394. think it's wise

  1395. to go and seek

  1396. the non-Christians

  1397. in the community

  1398. to give money

  1399. to the church

  1400. to keep the church

  1401. open?

  1402. Like shouldn't it

  1403. really be that

  1404. the church wants

  1405. to bless the

  1406. community?

  1407. Like shouldn't it

  1408. be like we have

  1409. it backwards?

  1410. And so I finally

  1411. and I can also

  1412. tell you another

  1413. thing and I

  1414. you know they all

  1415. sort of knew this

  1416. as well

1417. so a lot of times

  1418. what would happen

  1419. is they do all

  1420. this work to make

  1421. chicken suppers

  1422. or something

  1423. or other like that

  1424. and all that would

  1425. happen is at the

  1426. end of the day

  1427. everybody's exhausted

  1428. you actually make

  1429. very little money

  1430. and then like people

  1431. don't come to church

  1432. like for the next

  1433. month because

  1434. they've done their

  1435. bit and offerings

  1436. go down for the

  1437. next month

  1438. and you know

  1439. sometimes people

  1440. would actually say

  1441. to me you know

  1442. George if we'd

  1443. actually just gone

  1444. and worked for a

  1445. local worker for a

  1446. day for minimum

  1447. wage and then gave

  1448. the money to the

  1449. church it would have

  1450. been less tiring

  1451. and we would have

  1452. had more money

  1453. so anyway finally

  1454. after like I've

  1455. been there seven

  1456. years or almost

  1457. seven years and I

  1458. finally convinced

  1459. them that we would

  1460. do something

  1461. different we

  1462. weren't going to

  1463. do this fundraiser

  1464. thing in February

  1465. we would do

  1466. something completely

  1467. different we would

  1468. do something in

  1469. keeping with being

  1470. gods and wanting

  1471. to lavish his love

  1472. upon people and so

  1473. we made an

  1474. arrangement that we

  1475. had a we

  1476. connected with the

  1477. international student

  1478. christian fellowship

  1479. here in Ottawa at

  1480. Ottawa U and we

1481. said if you guys can

  1482. get up to Eganville

1483. for a day we will

  1484. give you a free

  1485. lunch a free supper

1486. we will give you an

  1487. opportunity to see

  1488. what rural Canadian

  1489. life is like we'll

  1490. organize ice fishing

  1491. we'll organize cross

  1492. country skiing we'll

  1493. organize snow

  1494. mobiling we'll take

1495. you out to some of

  1496. the local farms to

  1497. visit some of the

  1498. local people we'll

  1499. give you free lunch

  1500. free supper and

  1501. we're also going to

  1502. have even song and

  1503. share the gospel and

  1504. I don't know what

  1505. it was like 50

  1506. some odd people all

  1507. came up people from

  1508. China and Africa all

1509. over they came up to

  1510. Eganville and we gave

  1511. them and you know

  1512. anything about country

  1513. people you never just

1514. offer one meat when you

1515. can offer three like you

  1516. never just offer one

1517. type of salad when you

1518. can offer four right so

1519. they just stuff them like

1520. for lunch one of my big

1521. memories of this it's so

1522. cool but the the Asian

  1523. students and the Chinese

  1524. students in particular they

1525. loved being at the farm

  1526. spending their time having

  1527. their pictures taken with

  1528. the cows I don't know

1529. why but that was a big

1530. thing and and the by the

1531. end you know we gave

1532. them supper we had an

1533. even song we shared the

1534. gospel by the time they

1535. were going home they they

1536. loved us they they just

1537. had such the greatest time

1538. in the world everybody was

  1539. so thankful and the

  1540. congregation had not

  1541. raised a single penny they'd

1542. spent money in a sense to

1543. be honest they were poor at

1544. the end of the day than

1545. they were at the beginning

1546. but you know what the

  1547. whole congregation was so

1548. pumped for the next month

1549. or two attendance in my

1550. church was way up and the

1551. offerings were way up and by

1552. the end of the two months we

1553. had way more money than if we

1554. had done a stupid chicken

1555. barbecue or some other type of

1556. thing you see holiness is its

1557. own reward but it brings other

1558. goods in its train and this

1559. also fits with the other

1560. thing is that God defines the

1561. blessing not Canada not Wall

  1562. Street not Hollywood now

1563. obviously one of the reasons

1564. that Haggai was recognized as a

1565. prophet is there must have

1566. been see one of the things

1567. about this prophecy is it

1568. comes the late rains in early

  1569. late October early November

1570. that makes a hard soil around

1571. Jerusalem soft so they could

1572. plant and then there's some

1573. other rains and so in

  1574. December everything's planted

  1575. but nothing's been harvested

1576. and so obviously there was

1577. enough of an increase in food

1578. that people could see that the

1579. prophecy by Haggai was true

1580. it's one of the reasons that

1581. they must have said we need to

1582. keep this book and read this

1583. book and study this book and

1584. pray for this book we need to

1585. understand that when we draw

1586. close to God that's its own

1587. reward but he will also bless us

1588. in other ways and there must

1589. have been enough there but you

1590. know it's more than just having

1591. enough food we live in a time

  1592. when there's a crisis of

1593. meaning part of the reason

1594. there's so much anxiety in

1595. Canada is that there's no

  1596. meaning there's no meaning

1597. people feel alone and they feel

1598. isolated and they feel guilty

1599. and they feel insufficient and

1600. they have anxiety and all these

1601. issues but you hear this story

1602. and God wants to lavish his love

1603. upon you and and he wants you to

1604. be his and when you're his he

1605. wants to lavish his love upon

1606. you and he wants you to be part

1607. of his great mission that the

1608. world will know that he exists

1609. that he loves you that he wants

1610. to lavish his love he wants a

1611. lavish life upon you he will give

1612. you love and life that begins

1613. today that goes on through into

1614. all eternity and so there must have

1615. been enough for them to have more

1616. that's completely fine but you see

1617. like think about that story of that

1618. congregation in Eganville let me

1619. tell you this being generous is way

1620. more whole and freeing than hoarding

1621. money forgiving is way more whole and

1622. freeing than being judgmental and

1623. attacking you know what embracing

1624. people who are of different cultures

1625. are you and befriending them or

1626. different colors of you or different

1627. religions of you and befriending

1628. them is way more freeing than the

1629. person who's afraid of them

1630. and being able to turn the other

1631. cheek when somebody hurts you is way

1632. more freeing than being able to be a

1633. really good person at punching them

1634. back and the person who gives rather

1635. than hoards will have a far softer

1636. pillow at night the person who

1637. forgives rather than seek revenge

1638. will have a far softer pillow at

  1639. night

1640. see it's not just about the stuff

1641. although obviously there was this

1642. stuff is that when God blesses you

1643. God blesses you the whole one simple

1644. way to understand blessing is that God

1645. wants you to thrive but not by the

1646. standards of Canada by the God who's

1647. created all things who wants to

1648. lavish his love upon you and life

  1649. upon you

1650. and so that's this message here of

1651. this book that we are to put God

1652. first that we are in a sense to once

1653. again just understand the importance

1654. of being gripped by the gospel and

1655. how when we start to realize that it

1656. makes far more sense to put him first

1657. in his mission to transform human

1658. lives and human communities through the

1659. gospel so that more and more people

1660. will understand that God just wants to

1661. lavish his love and life upon you and

1662. to be part of that is to be meaning

1663. to understand that you're making

1664. something you're not just teaching

1665. Sunday school you're not just

1666. greeting somebody at the door you're

1667. not just helping a new Canadian learn

1668. how to speak English better when you're

1669. in for the name of Jesus you're not

1670. just doing these meaningless things

1671. you are doing something that's part of

1672. this profound mission of God this

1673. narrative and story of God that

1674. transforms human lives that will

1675. transform them beyond death and into

1676. all eternity and that is what God is

1677. asking you to do and so why would you

1678. take such a great ambition and pursue

  1679. ephemeral things

1680. I'm not saying that to you if I say that

1681. to you I have three fingers pointing

1682. back at me and one up to Jesus Jesus

1683. help me let me see me let's just pray

1684. that the Lord will help us to be so

1685. gripped with this story of Jesus and

1686. of God's grace and his lavishing his

1687. love upon us that it it changes how we

1688. do our church which changes how we live

1689. our lives that time and time and time

1690. again we come to him and say Lord this

1691. week I've messed up or I've done good

1692. I so need to hear this story again to

1693. help me get where true north is and

1694. what life is all about that I can once

1695. again I recommit to you I recommit to

1696. you not in a way that I'm now saved

1697. because Jesus never lets us go it's all

1698. grace he's opened the door not us he's

1699. opened the way not us let's stand

  1700. close in prayer

1701. father we give you thanks and praise

  1702. that

1703. you want to lavish your love and your

1704. life upon us and that you want to not

1705. only do that here on this side of the

1706. grave but that you want to do that

1707. begin that work in our lives and grow

1708. that work in our lives that will go on

1709. and survive death and go on into all

1710. eternity into the new heaven and the

1711. new earth so father we give you thanks

1712. and praise that that is who you are

1713. that is what you want to do that is

1714. what you want us to understand and so we

1715. ask father we give you thanks and

1716. praise that this on the Sabbath the

1717. Lord's day that we can gather and hear

1718. your word and be reminded about what is

1719. true and what is real and what is

1720. meaningful and what is significant and

1721. and and father that that we can double

1722. down and commit to this and if we

1723. haven't entered into this story that

1724. if we have not realized that that's

1725. why God's trying to get our attention

1726. so that we would give our life to

1727. Jesus said that but if there's anyone

1728. here in that or listening on that that

1729. they would say father I want to stop

  1730. running I want to be Jesus's I want

1731. him to be my Savior and my Lord and I

1732. want you to never let me go and I want

1733. you to bless me and with your love in

1734. your life and I want to be blessed by

1735. you so that I might be a blessing

1736. father I want that to be the new and

1737. final story of my life and father we

1738. ask for them we ask for us that once

1739. again we will recommit father draw us

1740. close to yourself through your son in

1741. the power of the Holy Spirit make us

1742. open to receiving your blessing so

1743. that we might be a blessing to others

1744. for our great good the good of our city

1745. the good of our nation the good of the

1746. world and for your great glory and we

1747. ask these things in the name of Jesus

1748. your son and our Savior amen
