  1. The scripture reading this morning comes from Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin or on your Bible.

  3. Starting with verse 44 we read,

  4. The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field,

  5. which a man found and covered up.

  6. Then, in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

  7. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls,

  8. who, on finding one pearl of great value,

  9. went and stole all that he had and bought it.

  10. This is the word of God.

  11. Great, thank you, Angie.

  12. Okay, well, there we go.

  13. Okay, you can hear me.

  14. I'm not sure why the speakers didn't like you, Angie, but thank you.

  15. In October 28th, so this week, 1949, 72 years ago, somewhere around there,

  16. a young American man by the name of Jim Elliott

  17. writes these words in his journal.

  18. He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep

  19. in order to gain what he cannot lose.

  20. Seven years later, January the 3rd, 1956,

  21. Jim Elliott and four other men would put their conviction to the test

  22. as they flew over the Ecuadorian jungle in the Amazon.

  23. They were missionaries to a tribe there,

  24. the notoriously dangerous Orca tribe.

  25. They had been preparing for years to reach out to this tribe

  26. to connect with them, build relationship, learn their language

  27. so that they could eventually share the gospel with them.

  28. And they land on the beach, and the five men never returned.

  29. They were speared to death on the landing.

  30. Now, we are looking at this very short passage of Scripture today.

  31. Last week, we looked at this big passage,

  32. and we kind of zoomed out and took a high view level.

  33. This morning, we're going to dive deep down,

  34. and we're going to look at just three verses in Matthew 13,

    Matthew 13:44–46

  35. verse 44 to 46.

  36. Let me read it to us once again.

  37. It says,

  38. Jesus says,

  39. The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that is hidden in a field,

  40. which a man found, and he covered it up.

  41. Then, in his great joy,

  42. he goes and sells everything he has,

  43. and he buys that field.

  44. Again, Jesus says,

  45. The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant,

  46. someone who's searching for very rare jewels,

  47. and he finds one pearl that is of great value.

  48. He goes and he sells everything he has to obtain that one precious pearl.

  49. In these three verses, we have two parables and one meaning.

  50. They're slightly different,

  51. but by and large, they come down to the same thing.

  52. This is one story that Jesus wants us to see.

  53. But let's consider first what Jesus is not wanting to say.

  54. Jesus is not commenting on the ethics of buying somebody else's property

  55. if you've got secret intelligence that there's a treasure hidden deep below the surface.

  56. If you've got concerns about first century Jewish property law,

  57. you can go and read up about that.

  58. That's not Jesus' point here.

  59. Jesus is not saying that we should all wear fine pearl necklaces

  60. and bling jewelry to church on Sundays.

  61. That's not the point of these stories.

  62. Jesus is not saying that you can buy your way into the kingdom of heaven.

  63. In fact, Jesus makes it clear that the wealthier you are,

  64. the more difficult it is to be a Christian,

  65. which is challenging for us in Hong Kong, right?

  66. No, friends, what Jesus is saying is this.

  67. Jesus is saying that being part of the kingdom of God,

  68. which means coming under the saving rule and reign of Jesus,

  69. that's what it means to be part of the kingdom,

  70. where Jesus is your king, you submit to him, you come under his authority,

  71. to be part of the kingdom of God is so valuable

  72. that losing everything on earth but getting the kingdom

  73. is a happy and worthwhile trade-off.

  74. Jesus is saying to give up everything you have

  75. in order to have the kingdom of God would be a joyful sacrifice.

  76. Okay, is that clear?

  77. Now, before we dive in, there's a couple of things we need to take note of.

  78. The one thing that, in order to understand this passage,

  79. we need to think about this,

  80. is what is the relationship between the kingdom of God and the church?

  81. And that's a really important question.

  82. What is the relationship like?

  83. Is Jesus saying that your local church,

  84. Watermark Community Church, Hong Kong,

  85. is like a treasure that is buried in a field

  86. and it's worth sacrificing everything for it

  87. so that it can advance and become glorious?

  88. No, that's not what Jesus is saying.

  89. The local church, although an extremely important expression

  90. of the kingdom of God, is not the kingdom of God itself.

  91. Those two things are not one and the same.

  92. The kingdom of God is the rule and reign of Jesus

  93. and the local church is one expression of it

  94. and it's important to be part of a church.

  95. I'm so glad that just last Sunday,

  96. we had 13 people joining our membership class

  97. looking to become members of this church.

  98. It's important to join a local church

  99. and become a member of a church.

  100. But the church is not the same thing as the kingdom of God.

  101. And that's important because sometimes you'll find pastors,

  102. I apologize on behalf of my friends,

  103. that we'll confuse these two things.

  104. And as pastors, we like to sometimes crack the whip

  105. and drive our congregations harder and harder

  106. and demand more and more saying,

  107. the kingdom of God is like a pearl.

  108. You've got to give up everything for it.

  109. Therefore, we want you at church seven days a week.

  110. You've got to give everything you have.

  111. Sacrifice your family, sacrifice your career,

  112. just serve in our church.

  113. Friends, the church is not the same thing

  114. as the kingdom of God.

  115. That's not what Jesus is saying.

  116. Of course, every church, every family,

  117. we do make sacrifices,

  118. whether you're a nuclear family or the church family.

  119. But Jesus' point here is to give up everything you have

  120. in order to come under the saving rule and reign of King Jesus

  121. is a happy and joyful sacrifice.

  122. Now, when we hear these scriptures,

  123. if you've been a Christian for some time,

  124. and I know that might not be true of all of us,

  125. there is a danger.

  126. And one of the dangers is that familiarity breeds complacency.

  127. Right?

  128. We all know that in our lives.

  129. Remember when COVID first hit the world,

  130. we were all on high alert.

  131. Okay?

  132. We were all hand sanitizing 100 times a day.

  133. Very, very conscious.

  134. Two years later, familiarity breeds complacency.

  135. Right?

  136. And there's nothing like scripture for us to become familiar with

  137. and to become complacent with.

  138. Richard Baxter, a famous pastor, said,

  139. these words need more consideration than explanation.

  140. The explanation is pretty clear.

  141. What Jesus is saying,

  142. you don't need to be a rocket scientist

  143. or a nuclear physicist to work it out.

  144. He's saying that to give everything for the kingdom of God

  145. would be a joyful sacrifice.

  146. The explanation is clear.

  147. The question is,

  148. will we consider them?

  149. Will we allow Jesus' words to penetrate our hearts?

  150. Will we allow them to arrest us?

  151. And allowing them to arrest us,

  152. will we believe them and believe in them?

  153. Will we allow them to change us?

  154. So let's consider these three short verses this morning.

  155. And I've got four very simple things to say.

  156. Okay?

  157. So one meaning, two parables, three verses, four things to say.

  158. My math is hot this week.

  159. Okay?

  160. So first thing, let's consider this.

  161. No one enters the kingdom of God by accident.

  162. Consider these parables again.

  163. This farmer is confronted by the unearthing of this treasure.

  164. This merchant is arrested by the discovery of this pearl

  165. that exceeds even his wildest expectations.

  166. And here this laborer, farm laborer,

  167. here this merchant are arrested by this discovery

  168. and they've got a choice to make.

  169. What are they going to do?

  170. In order to obtain this treasure, this pearl,

  171. is going to require some sacrifices.

  172. They're going to have to sell some things.

  173. They're going to have to get rid of some things.

  174. There might be some very important things.

  175. Maybe some family heirlooms.

  176. Some important piece of furniture.

  177. Maybe that thoroughbred horse that he has been saving up for.

  178. Maybe some gold bars.

  179. There's going to be some decision that is going to be needed to be made.

  180. The merchant may have to sell his collection of prized jewels.

  181. What's he going to choose?

  182. Jesus' point here is that the kingdom of God is not just like a lottery,

  183. that you wake up one day, your number's been called,

  184. and Bob's your uncle.

  185. You are now in the kingdom of God.

  186. Jesus' point is that you don't just enter God's kingdom by osmosis,

  187. or by accident, or just by growing up in a Christian family.

  188. The kingdom of God is entered into by a decision,

  189. a choice that's made.

  190. Jesus makes the same point elsewhere.

  191. He says in Matthew's Gospel,

  192. which of you, you desire to build a building?

  193. How many of you are going to engage in that building process

  194. without first considering the cost?

  195. You've got to weigh up the pros and cons.

  196. You've got to come to a decision.

  197. You want to launch a business?

  198. You've got to work out.

  199. What's the cost going to be involved?

  200. How many of you, he says,

  201. how many kings go off to war,

  202. and they've got to first work out with my army,

  203. are we going to win the war against that army?

  204. If a business wants to take over their competitor,

  205. launch a hostile takeover, bid for their shares,

  206. you've got to weigh it up, make some decisions.

  207. Jesus is saying,

  208. the point here is no one enters God's kingdom haphazardly.

  209. No one enters it just by osmosis.

  210. You hang around with some Christians,

  211. and you find out you're part of the kingdom.

  212. Friends, if you were born part of a wonderful Christian family,

  213. praise God for that.

  214. But that doesn't make you a Christian.

  215. You don't get citizenship in God's kingdom

  216. by way of ancestry.

  217. You enter the kingdom of God

  218. by weighing up who Jesus is,

  219. by being confronted by who Christ is,

  220. and making a decision.

  221. Am I going to be part of his kingdom?

  222. Am I going to come under the authority,

  223. the saving rule and reign of Jesus?

  224. Jesus' point here is that,

  225. like the parable on the soils

  226. that Chris spoke about a few weeks ago,

  227. no response is very much a response.

  228. It's tempting to say,

  229. I'm a little busy at the moment.

  230. I'm just trying to finish my degree.

  231. I've got young kids.

  232. I'm trying to launch a business.

  233. I'll get to that some later stage.

  234. And Jesus is saying,

  235. that is as much of a response as saying,

  236. no, I think I'll stay the Lord of my own life.

  237. No one enters the kingdom of God by accident.

  238. Secondly,

  239. Jesus tells us that the way into the kingdom of God

  240. is the same as the way of the kingdom of God.

  241. The way into the kingdom is the way of the kingdom.

  242. Now, last week,

  243. we looked at this passage right at the end of the sermon.

  244. We just looked at it in a few minutes.

  245. And one of the things that I said

  246. was that this is the way into the kingdom of God.

  247. And that's true.

  248. But one of the things that we at Watermark are learning

  249. is that the way into God's kingdom

  250. is also the way of God's kingdom.

  251. The way that you become a Christian

  252. is also the way that you live as a Christian.

  253. Maybe a good analogy of this

  254. is it's similar to marriage, right?

  255. Those of you that are married,

  256. one day you stand at the altar

  257. and you hold your wife's hands,

  258. your husband's hands.

  259. You look them in the eye

  260. and you say,

  261. with all that I am

  262. and all that I have,

  263. I give myself to you

  264. in the covenant of marriage

  265. for better or worse,

  266. richer or poorer,

  267. in sickness and in health,

  268. till death us do part.

  269. Right?

  270. Does that sound familiar?

  271. Okay.

  272. Justin and Annabelle nodding.

  273. Four weeks in,

  274. still doing strong.

  275. Okay, great.

  276. Well, that's,

  277. I'm glad that Dave's still onto it, okay?

  278. But those of us that are married 40 years,

  279. I hope you're still onto it as well, right?

  280. It's not just four weeks.

  281. It's 40 years in.

  282. You can't 10 years into marriage,

  283. you know,

  284. your wife asks you to do something

  285. and you say,

  286. no,

  287. not really interested.

  288. And she says,

  289. hang on,

  290. what is all about,

  291. what is all that better and worse stuff?

  292. You know,

  293. you give yourself to me,

  294. I give myself to you.

  295. What is up with that?

  296. And you say,

  297. oh,

  298. that is just in order to get married.

  299. You didn't expect me to actually live like that,

  300. right?

  301. I mean,

  302. no one actually does that stuff,

  303. right?

  304. No,

  305. no,

  306. the way into marriage

  307. is also the way of marriage.

  308. You say these vows in order to get married,

  309. but you live out those vows

  310. in order to have a healthy marriage.

  311. In the same way,

  312. the way you become a Christian

  313. is through faith and repentance.

  314. Repentance means turning away

  315. from some lesser God,

  316. some counterfeit God,

  317. some idol,

  318. something that grabs our heart's attention

  319. rather than the true God.

  320. We turn away from that,

  321. but then we turn to Christ in faith.

  322. Faith and repentance

  323. are two sides of the same coin.

  324. They go together.

  325. Eric Scott says,

  326. they are the two pedals of a bicycle,

  327. right?

  328. If you're just doing repentance,

  329. you're going to go around in a circle,

  330. right?

  331. If you're just doing faith,

  332. you're going to go around in a circle.

  333. You've got to,

  334. faith and repentance

  335. is the way into the kingdom,

  336. but faith and repentance

  337. is the way of the Christian.

  338. It's the way that we live out our lives.

  339. It's until death do us part.

  340. Tim Keller famously says,

  341. faith and repentance,

  342. or the gospel,

  343. is not just the ABC of the Christian life,

  344. it's the A to Z of the Christian life.

  345. And Tim Keller actually got this

  346. from a famous man called Martin Luther,

  347. who 504 years ago,

  348. this very week,

  349. 31st of October, 1517,

  350. he's this Catholic monk,

  351. and he wants to talk to,

  352. he wants the Catholic church

  353. to have a big discussion

  354. about some things

  355. that he thinks are going wrong,

  356. right?

  357. And so he posts this post

  358. on the social media of his day,

  359. right?

  360. He posts this post on Facebook,

  361. except they didn't have Facebook

  362. 500 years ago.

  363. And so the way that they did it

  364. was he goes to the church door

  365. of Wittenberg Castle

  366. and he nails this big poster

  367. on the church door,

  368. okay?

  369. That was like social media

  370. 500 years ago.

  371. And he says,

  372. hey guys,

  373. there's some stuff

  374. we've got to talk about.

  375. And so he nails this long piece of paper

  376. with 95 statements

  377. called theses

  378. that he says we've got to talk about.

  379. Now Martin Luther wasn't trying

  380. to start the Protestant revolution.

  381. He wasn't trying to start a new church.

  382. He was just saying,

  383. listen,

  384. we need to talk about some things.

  385. Do you remember the very first one

  386. of his 95?

  387. I think it's on the screen.

  388. There we go.

  389. He says,

  390. when our Lord and Master,

  391. Jesus Christ,

  392. said repent,

  393. he willed that the entire life

  394. of believers

  395. be one of repentance and faith.

  396. What Martin Luther was saying

  397. is the problem with us as a church

  398. is that we enter the Christian life

  399. through faith and repentance

  400. and then we go on

  401. with our way of living ourselves.

  402. He says actually,

  403. when Jesus said,

  404. come and follow me,

  405. turn from your false gods

  406. and follow me,

  407. he willed that that would be

  408. the pattern of our lives

  409. day in and day out.

  410. Friends,

  411. if somebody told you

  412. once upon a time,

  413. just pray the sinner's prayer,

  414. surrender to Jesus

  415. and then you can get on

  416. with your life,

  417. I'm so sorry to tell you

  418. they lied to you.

  419. Please forgive them.

  420. That's not true.

  421. The way into the Christian life

  422. is the way of the Christian life.

  423. Faith and repentance.

  424. And actually,

  425. what we see in this parable

  426. are those two things

  427. that work, right?

  428. This is actually a parable

  429. of what faith and repentance

  430. looks like.

  431. We see here Jesus tells this parable

  432. to demonstrate

  433. what this life looks like.

  434. It is giving up the false

  435. and taking hold of the true.

  436. It is giving up the counterfeit

  437. and taking hold of the genuine.

  438. It's giving up some lesser God,

  439. some lesser treasure

  440. in order to take hold

  441. of the true treasure of heaven,

  442. which is the kingdom of God

  443. and Jesus Christ himself.

  444. This is the life of a Christian.

  445. Day by day,

  446. week by week,

  447. month by month,

  448. letting go of that

  449. which captures our heart's attention

  450. and reminding ourselves

  451. Christ is true,

  452. Christ is real,

  453. take hold of the treasure of heaven.

  454. And so what that means, friends,

  455. for those of us

  456. that are not Christians this morning,

  457. friends,

  458. you'll never become a Christian

  459. until you give up those things

  460. that have captured

  461. your heart's attention

  462. and discover the beauty

  463. of who Christ is

  464. and take hold of him.

  465. But what it also means

  466. is that for those of us

  467. that are Christians this morning,

  468. the life that Christ calls us to

  469. is to day by day

  470. give up the things

  471. that are tempted

  472. to capture our heart's attention

  473. and to turn to the treasure

  474. that is Christ.

  475. This is the gospel-centered life.

  476. Okay, so the way

  477. no one becomes a Christian by accident,

  478. the way into the Christian life

  479. is the way of the Christian life.

  480. Now here's another question.

  481. What is it that Jesus asks us to give up?

  482. I mean, Jesus here in these parables

  483. says,

  484. you tell these parables

  485. of these two guys

  486. that go and give up

  487. everything they have.

  488. What does that actually look like

  489. for us

  490. in 21st century Hong Kong?

  491. Ah, Jung, that's totally fine.

  492. Your little one is too cute.

  493. Okay.

  494. What does that actually look like for us?

  495. Well, that's a great question.

  496. For every one of us,

  497. it will look different.

  498. But the overall answer is this.

  499. Whatever owns your heart

  500. has the tendency

  501. to keep us

  502. from the kingdom of God.

  503. Whatever owns your heart

  504. has the tendency

  505. to keep us

  506. from the kingdom of God.

  507. For some of us,

  508. that may mean

  509. the everyday pleasures of life, right?

  510. So the things

  511. that in everyday life

  512. that grip us,

  513. that amazing new car,

  514. that career promotion,

  515. career success,

  516. the things that make us

  517. feel good about ourselves,

  518. the things we look to

  519. that grab our attention

  520. and think that's going to make life

  521. worth living.

  522. For some of us,

  523. the things that own our hearts

  524. are people's approval,

  525. the affirmation of others.

  526. And so we do whatever it is

  527. to please people,

  528. to gain other people's recognition

  529. and their favor.

  530. But what this means

  531. is that those people

  532. own our hearts.

  533. They're actually our king.

  534. They're actually our treasure.

  535. Jesus says that

  536. everything we look to

  537. to make us feel worthwhile

  538. or commendable

  539. or admirable

  540. needs to be sold off,

  541. given up

  542. in order to take hold

  543. of the treasure

  544. that is Christ.

  545. Friends,

  546. for some of us,

  547. one of the most difficult things

  548. to give up

  549. is not the pleasures of life.

  550. It's not the big car

  551. or the big house

  552. or the overseas holiday

  553. that owns your heart.

  554. For some of us,

  555. it's the pride

  556. of our hearts.

  557. I see this in my own life.

  558. That's what's so deadly serious.

  559. And Jesus says that

  560. the pride of our hearts

  561. has a way of blinding us

  562. to seeing the treasure of Jesus.

  563. Pride manifests itself

  564. in many different ways.

  565. One of the most

  566. unobvious ways,

  567. the most sinister of ways,

  568. is when we feel sorry for ourselves.

  569. Maybe someone's disappointed you

  570. or let you down.

  571. Someone's hurt you.

  572. Maybe,

  573. hopefully,

  574. they've come and said sorry to you,

  575. but maybe they haven't.

  576. Friends,

  577. are we still holding on

  578. to that offense,

  579. that bitterness?

  580. Holding on to it

  581. because it's a position of power

  582. that makes us feel justified?

  583. Jesus says,

  584. it's very hard

  585. to let go of everything,

  586. to take hold

  587. of the treasure of Jesus

  588. and still hold on

  589. to bitterness

  590. and offense.

  591. Friends,

  592. for some of us,

  593. maybe it is,

  594. for some of us,

  595. it's our very religious duty

  596. that keeps us

  597. from taking hold of Jesus.

  598. There's this amazing sentence

  599. in a book

  600. by Flannery O'Connor

  601. called Wise Blood.

  602. I remember reading this book

  603. five or six years ago

  604. and I stumbled across

  605. the sentence

  606. that absolutely blew me away

  607. and when I read it,

  608. I realized that actually

  609. I'd heard Tim Keller

  610. quoting this before,

  611. but I'd forgotten it

  612. until I read the sentence

  613. in this book.

  614. The book Wise Blood

  615. is about this young man

  616. that is abandoning

  617. the faith of his upbringing.

  618. He grows up

  619. in the American South

  620. and he's turning his back

  621. on the faith of his upbringing.

  622. And he says,

  623. there's this sentence

  624. in the book

  625. where Flannery O'Connor

  626. writes this,

  627. there was already

  628. a deep wordless conviction

  629. in him

  630. that the way

  631. to avoid Jesus

  632. was to avoid sin.

  633. Okay,

  634. just think about that

  635. for a second.

  636. Is that not

  637. an amazing insight?

  638. Right?

  639. Here's this person,

  640. sorry if you can't see,

  641. Ellen,

  642. here's this person

  643. that wants to avoid

  644. the gaze of Jesus

  645. looking into his heart.

  646. And the best way

  647. to fly under the radar,

  648. he reckons,

  649. is not by running far away

  650. but by sticking close.

  651. You know,

  652. isn't there that saying,

  653. some saying about

  654. keep your friends close

  655. and your enemies even closer?

  656. If you want to be

  657. an enemy of Jesus,

  658. if you want to avoid

  659. coming under the rule

  660. and reign of Jesus,

  661. one of the best ways

  662. to do it

  663. is to hide it

  664. with lots of religious

  665. activity and duty.

  666. So you serve in church,

  667. you're part of a CG,

  668. you attend,

  669. you come early,

  670. you unpack,

  671. you stay late,

  672. you sit up,

  673. you do all these things

  674. in order to avoid

  675. the gaze of Jesus.

  676. Friends,

  677. don't you see

  678. how you can use religion,

  679. even Christian devotion,

  680. as a way of avoiding

  681. coming under the rule

  682. and reign of King Jesus?

  683. You think that

  684. if you serve enough,

  685. give enough,

  686. do enough,

  687. no one will notice

  688. and you can fly

  689. under the radar.

  690. You see how religious

  691. devotion can be a way

  692. of avoiding

  693. the reign of Jesus,

  694. the saving reign of Jesus?

  695. But Jesus says

  696. that if you want to encounter

  697. the life transforming

  698. power of the gospel,

  699. if you really want to encounter

  700. the life transforming

  701. grace of Jesus

  702. and the love of Christ,

  703. you've got to come

  704. to the place

  705. where you see Jesus

  706. for who he is

  707. and you take hold of him

  708. and you abandon

  709. even religious devotion,

  710. even religious duty

  711. in order to take hold

  712. of who Jesus is.

  713. Remember the apostle Paul,

  714. he says in Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  715. that famous passage of scripture,

  716. he says,

  717. I once was extremely religious.

  718. I had my resume

  719. all printed out,

  720. top marks.

  721. I was the top of my class.

  722. I was born to the right family.

  723. I was tutored

  724. by the right teachers.

  725. I was excelling

  726. way above everyone else

  727. in my age.

  728. I was a Hebrew of Hebrews.

  729. I had everything going for me

  730. until one day

  731. I discovered

  732. your surpassing worth

  733. of the treasure

  734. of heaven.

  735. And now I consider

  736. all those things

  737. as rubbish,

  738. as dung,

  739. compared to the all-surpassing worth

  740. of knowing Christ Jesus,

  741. my Lord,

  742. and taking hold

  743. of the treasure

  744. and becoming like him

  745. and being found

  746. in his likeness.

  747. Friends,

  748. sometimes we've got to give up

  749. even our religious devotion

  750. to take hold

  751. of the treasure of Jesus.

  752. For some of us,

  753. lastly,

  754. the thing that stops us

  755. discovering the treasure

  756. of Jesus

  757. is not our religious devotion,

  758. it's how irreligious we are,

  759. how modern we are,

  760. how authentic we are,

  761. how woke we are.

  762. We look at religious people

  763. and we think,

  764. oh, they're so stuck up.

  765. They're so full of themselves.

  766. Well, at least I'm authentic.

  767. At least I'm not trying

  768. to pretend to be somebody

  769. that I'm not.

  770. I'm authentic millennial,

  771. right?

  772. But friends,

  773. don't you realize

  774. that in your authenticity,

  775. in your wokeness,

  776. you can be just

  777. as full of yourself

  778. as the religious person

  779. sitting next to you.

  780. Jesus says

  781. the only way

  782. to encounter

  783. the kingdom of God,

  784. to really discover

  785. who he is,

  786. to see the beauty

  787. of who he is,

  788. is to lose ourselves

  789. and to be enamored

  790. with who Christ is.

  791. Friends,

  792. it's tempting

  793. to look at Christianity

  794. and think,

  795. I've got the jade stone,

  796. I've got the diamond,

  797. now let me add a pearl

  798. to my array of jewelry.

  799. And Jesus says

  800. that will not do.

  801. That will not do.

  802. You cannot add

  803. a bit of Jesus

  804. to your life.

  805. You come to him

  806. and you say,

  807. have your way.

  808. Let me come

  809. under your rule

  810. and your authority.

  811. Jesus,

  812. you are Lord

  813. and I am yours.

  814. You discover

  815. the kingdom of heaven.

  816. The kingdom of heaven

  817. is like a merchant

  818. in search of fine pearls

  819. who in finding one

  820. of great value,

  821. exceedingly great value,

  822. went away

  823. and sold all

  824. that he had

  825. to take hold

  826. of the pearl

  827. of great price.

  828. No one enters

  829. the kingdom by accident.

  830. The way into the kingdom

  831. is also the way

  832. of the kingdom.

  833. Thirdly,

  834. the hindrance

  835. is the kingdom

  836. and finally,

  837. the promise

  838. of the king.

  839. Now,

  840. look at verse 44

  841. with me again.

  842. Jesus says this,

  843. the kingdom of heaven

  844. is like a treasure

  845. hidden in a field

  846. which a man found

  847. and covered up.

  848. Then in his extreme

  849. misery and sadness,

  850. he went

  851. and he bought

  852. that field

  853. because that's

  854. what God expected

  855. of him.

  856. Okay?

  857. No,

  858. that's not what it says.

  859. What does it say?

  860. The kingdom of heaven

  861. is like a man

  862. that found a treasure

  863. and he covered it up

  864. in his great joy.

  865. He went

  866. and sold all

  867. that he had.

  868. He sold it

  869. at a bargain.

  870. He sold it

  871. for a discount.

  872. Take whatever you want.

  873. I just need your money.

  874. Whatever it takes,

  875. I must have

  876. that treasure.

  877. Jesus promises

  878. that being part

  879. of his kingdom,

  880. coming under the saving

  881. rule and reign

  882. of Jesus as king

  883. is so valuable

  884. that losing everything

  885. you have on earth

  886. to gain the kingdom

  887. is a happy

  888. and joyful

  889. and worthwhile sacrifice.

  890. Friends,

  891. in some ways,

  892. this describes

  893. the job description

  894. of the elder pastors

  895. at Watermark Church.

  896. Our job

  897. at Watermark Church

  898. is to do

  899. everything we can

  900. to clear away

  901. the dross,

  902. to clear away

  903. the haze

  904. and to help us

  905. to see

  906. week in

  907. and week out

  908. the infinite glory

  909. and the infinite worth

  910. of Jesus

  911. so that as a church

  912. we can live lives

  913. that say yes

  914. to you Christ

  915. and not be

  916. distracted

  917. by the glitz

  918. and the glamour

  919. of the world

  920. around us.

  921. Our job

  922. as elders

  923. is to help us

  924. not just

  925. accept Jesus

  926. not just

  927. admire him

  928. but to utterly

  929. adore him.

  930. Our job

  931. as elder pastors

  932. is to help us

  933. not just

  934. tolerate Jesus

  935. but to treasure him

  936. above all things.

  937. And friends,

  938. can I say

  939. that if you are

  940. a parent here

  941. that is your job too.

  942. Your job

  943. is not just

  944. to provide

  945. a house

  946. and a roof

  947. and clothing

  948. and food

  949. for your kids.

  950. That is an important job.

  951. Don't neglect that.

  952. Those social services

  953. are going to come

  954. knock on your door.

  955. Do that.

  956. But don't just do that.

  957. Don't just get your kids

  958. through school

  959. and good grades

  960. and university.

  961. Do all that you can

  962. to help them

  963. see the infinite worth

  964. of Jesus.

  965. That they won't

  966. just admire Jesus

  967. or accept him

  968. they will utterly

  969. adore him

  970. and treasure him

  971. above all things.

  972. And can I press

  973. a little further

  974. and say men

  975. you are the head

  976. of your home.

  977. It is primarily

  978. your responsibility.

  979. Don't sit back

  980. and let someone else

  981. do it.

  982. Stand up.

  983. Take responsibility.

  984. Friends,

  985. husbands,

  986. wives,

  987. parents,

  988. this is our job.

  989. Jesus is saying

  990. that for the one

  991. who has eyes

  992. to see it

  993. give up everything

  994. you have

  995. it is totally

  996. worth it

  997. because of the

  998. all surpassing

  999. worth of Jesus.

  1000. Friends,

  1001. let me ask you

  1002. what's holding you back?

  1003. What's that thing

  1004. that is so tempting

  1005. to earn your heart?

  1006. What is it

  1007. that is so hard

1008. to give up for Jesus?

  1009. Friends,

  1010. that thing,

  1011. some boyfriend,

  1012. some girlfriend,

  1013. some career progression,

  1014. some bank account,

  1015. those things may be

1016. a great gift from God.

  1017. They may be

  1018. a wonderful thing.

  1019. But are they still

  1020. going to be

  1021. the treasure

  1022. of your heart

  1023. in a hundred years

  1024. from now?

1025. Maybe in five years time

  1026. they'll still be great,

  1027. wonderful.

  1028. Ten years time,

  1029. maybe if you're

  1030. very lucky

  1031. 50 years time

  1032. you'll still be

  1033. treasuring them.

1034. But in 200 years time

1035. and a thousand years time

  1036. and a billion years

  1037. from now,

  1038. what are those things

1039. going to mean to you?

  1040. Friends,

  1041. Jesus says

  1042. that if we

  1043. treasure Christ

  1044. supremely

  1045. above all things

  1046. in one billion years

  1047. from now

  1048. that will still be

  1049. a joyful

  1050. and a worthwhile

  1051. transaction.

  1052. salvation.

  1053. But as we come

  1054. to close,

  1055. here's another reason

  1056. why giving up

  1057. everything to follow

  1058. Jesus is a happy

  1059. trade-off.

  1060. We spoke earlier

  1061. about Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1062. chapter 3.

  1063. Remember,

  1064. very super famous

  1065. verse,

  1066. the apostle Paul

  1067. says,

  1068. I had all these

  1069. things going for me

  1070. and then I

  1071. discovered Jesus

  1072. and I considered

  1073. them rubbish

  1074. compared to the

  1075. all-surpassing worth

  1076. of knowing Christ

  1077. Jesus my Lord.

  1078. And then Paul

  1079. goes on and he

  1080. says this,

  1081. not that I have

  1082. already obtained

  1083. all this,

  1084. in other words,

  1085. not that I'm

  1086. perfect,

  1087. okay,

  1088. I'm going to,

  1089. but he says,

  1090. I press on

  1091. to make it my

  1092. own because

  1093. Christ Jesus

  1094. has made me

  1095. his own.

  1096. Okay,

  1097. so think about

  1098. this for a second.

  1099. I know this is

  1100. late in the sermon

  1101. to get theological

  1102. but just stick with

  1103. me for two minutes,

  1104. okay,

  1105. we're almost done.

  1106. Paul says,

  1107. not that I've

  1108. got this all

  1109. sorted out,

  1110. okay,

  1111. the way into the

  1112. kingdom is the

  1113. way of the

  1114. kingdom,

  1115. I'm going to

  1116. carry on,

  1117. but I press

  1118. on day by

  1119. day to make

  1120. Christ Jesus

  1121. my own,

  1122. to take hold

  1123. of Jesus

  1124. because he

  1125. has already

  1126. taken hold

  1127. of me.

  1128. What's Paul

  1129. saying?

  1130. Paul is

  1131. saying that

  1132. he continues

  1133. to take hold

  1134. of Jesus

  1135. knowing that

  1136. Jesus has

  1137. taken hold

  1138. of him.

  1139. Paul is

  1140. saying that

  1141. Jesus Christ

  1142. gave up the

  1143. glory and the

  1144. treasure of

  1145. heaven,

  1146. to take

  1147. on the

  1148. mess and

  1149. the shame

  1150. of this

  1151. world and

  1152. the shame

  1153. of the

  1154. cross so

  1155. that we

  1156. broken people

  1157. can give

  1158. up the

  1159. mess and

  1160. the shame

  1161. of our

  1162. false gods

  1163. in order

  1164. to embrace

  1165. the treasure

  1166. that is

  1167. heaven.

  1168. You see

  1169. the exchange

  1170. there?

  1171. Jesus gave

  1172. up heaven

  1173. to take

  1174. on the

  1175. mess of

  1176. this world

  1177. so that we

  1178. can turn

  1179. our backs

  1180. on the

  1181. mess of

  1182. this world

  1183. and embrace

  1184. the treasure

  1185. of heaven.

  1186. Jesus says

  1187. I will

  1188. embrace the

  1189. shame of

  1190. the cross

  1191. so that you

  1192. can embrace

  1193. the treasure

  1194. of heaven.

  1195. Friends,

  1196. in the

  1197. gospel,

  1198. Jesus Christ

  1199. had it all.

  1200. He had it

  1201. all in

  1202. heaven.

  1203. But because

  1204. of his

  1205. infinite love

  1206. for you and

  1207. because he

  1208. knows how

  1209. much you

  1210. and I

  1211. need him,

  1212. Jesus gave

  1213. that up

  1214. to walk

  1215. in the

  1216. shame and

  1217. the mess

  1218. and the

  1219. brokenness

  1220. of our

  1221. world

  1222. so that

  1223. we can

  1224. turn our

  1225. backs

  1226. on the

  1227. mess and

  1228. the shame

  1229. and the

  1230. brokenness

  1231. of the

  1232. things that

  1233. capture our

  1234. heart's

  1235. attention

  1236. and can

  1237. have the

  1238. treasure of

  1239. heaven

  1240. and can

  1241. have Jesus

  1242. himself.

  1243. Friends,

  1244. Jesus gave

  1245. it all

  1246. so that we

  1247. can have

  1248. him.

  1249. And now

  1250. he asks

  1251. us to give

  1252. up a very

  1253. small thing,

  1254. a counterfeit

  1255. God,

  1256. a false

  1257. idol,

  1258. a worthless

  1259. treasure,

  1260. that we

  1261. may have

  1262. eternal

  1263. treasure.

  1264. Friends,

  1265. this is why

  1266. we gather

  1267. at church

  1268. on Sundays.

  1269. Six days

  1270. a week

  1271. we're being

  1272. told money

  1273. is your

  1274. life,

  1275. relationships

  1276. are your

  1277. life,

  1278. sex is

  1279. your life,

  1280. career

  1281. progression

  1282. is your

  1283. life,

  1284. grades are

  1285. your life,

  1286. and once a

  1287. week we

  1288. gather to

  1289. remind ourselves

  1290. no,

  1291. no,

  1292. no,

  1293. that is not

  1294. true,

  1295. Jesus is

  1296. our life.

  1297. Those are

  1298. false

  1299. treasures,

  1300. Jesus is

  1301. the treasure

  1302. above all

  1303. treasures.

  1304. Jesus and

  1305. his saving

  1306. rule and

  1307. reign in

  1308. our lives

  1309. is utterly

  1310. glorious and

  1311. worth it all.

  1312. And of

  1313. course one

  1314. hour a week

  1315. is not going

  1316. to be enough

  1317. and so day

  1318. by day we

  1319. wake up in

  1320. the mornings

  1321. and we

  1322. get into

  1323. God's

  1324. word in

  1325. order that

  1326. we go out

  1327. that week

  1328. to withstand

  1329. the onslaught

  1330. and to

  1331. remember Jesus

  1332. is the

  1333. treasure above

  1334. all treasures.

  1335. Friends,

  1336. he is no

  1337. fool who

  1338. gives up what

  1339. he cannot

  1340. keep in

  1341. order to

  1342. gain what

  1343. he cannot

  1344. lose.

  1345. Jesus gave

  1346. up heaven

  1347. so that we

  1348. can gain

  1349. that which

  1350. we cannot

  1351. lose.

  1352. Friends,

  1353. can I invite

  1354. you?

  1355. Can I call

  1356. you this

  1357. day?

  1358. Why don't

  1359. you turn

  1360. your back

  1361. on the

  1362. things that

  1363. are tempted

  1364. to own

  1365. your heart?

  1366. What's holding

  1367. you back?

  1368. The thing

  1369. that you

  1370. tempted to

  1371. love and

  1372. adore above

  1373. all else?

  1374. The thing

  1375. that you've

  1376. come under

  1377. its rule and

  1378. its authority,

  1379. its reign in

  1380. your life?

  1381. Friends,

  1382. did it ever

  1383. go to the

  1384. cross for

  1385. you?

  1386. Did it ever

  1387. lay down

  1388. its life

  1389. for you?

  1390. Did it ever

  1391. die on the

  1392. cross for

  1393. you?

  1394. Jesus Christ

  1395. did.

  1396. Jesus loves

  1397. you so

  1398. supremely he

  1399. went to the

  1400. cross for

  1401. you that

  1402. we in

  1403. order can

  1404. have the

  1405. treasure that

  1406. is here.

  1407. Let's pray

  1408. together.

  1409. Let's pray.

  1410. Lord Jesus

  1411. Christ, we

  1412. acknowledge the

  1413. words of Richard

  1414. Baxter are so

  1415. true.

  1416. These words

  1417. don't need

  1418. great explanation.

  1419. They're pretty

  1420. clear.

  1421. they need

  1422. greater

  1423. consideration.

  1424. Father, the

  1425. familiarity with

  1426. these famous

  1427. passages is

  1428. challenging.

  1429. God, we

  1430. pray that you

  1431. will arrest

  1432. our hearts.

  1433. It's so

  1434. tempting to

  1435. nod our heads

  1436. and say, yes,

  1437. the kingdom is

  1438. valuable.

  1439. Yes, the

  1440. kingdom is

  1441. worthwhile.

  1442. Jesus, won't

  1443. you pierce

  1444. through our

  1445. head nodding

  1446. apathy and

  1447. open the eyes

  1448. of our hearts

  1449. to see you

  1450. for who you

  1451. really are.

  1452. Jesus, come

  1453. and have

  1454. your way

  1455. in our

  1456. life, we

  1457. pray.

  1458. Father, where

  1459. we've tempted

  1460. to love and

  1461. adore and

  1462. trust other

  1463. things, won't

  1464. you forgive

  1465. us?

  1466. We want to

  1467. turn to you

  1468. in faith and

  1469. repentance.

  1470. Won't you

  1471. give us the

  1472. faith to

  1473. turn to you?

  1474. We pray.

  1475. Jesus, come

  1476. and help us.

  1477. Help us to

  1478. turn to you,

  1479. we pray.

  1480. in your

  1481. great and

  1482. gracious name,

  1483. amen.

  1484. I want to

  1485. ask us to

  1486. respond differently.

  1487. I think we

  1488. got two

  1489. questions up

  1490. there.

  1491. I want to

  1492. ask you just

  1493. to take two

  1494. minutes and

  1495. maybe you

  1496. want to write

  1497. it down on

  1498. your phone or

  1499. on the

  1500. bulletin if

  1501. you've got a

  1502. pen with

  1503. you.

  1504. What is it

  1505. that Jesus

  1506. is saying to

  1507. you this

  1508. morning?

  1509. And then

  1510. secondly, how

  1511. are you going

  1512. to respond?

  1513. And a

  1514. good way to

  1515. start off a

  1516. response is

  1517. these words,

  1518. Heavenly Father

  1519. dot dot dot.

  1520. Heavenly Father,

  1521. I come before

  1522. you this

  1523. morning.

  1524. Heavenly Father,

  1525. I need you.

  1526. Heavenly Father,

  1527. come and help

  1528. me to see the

  1529. treasure that is

  1530. Jesus.

  1531. What's Jesus

  1532. saying to you?

  1533. How is he

  1534. calling you to

  1535. respond?

  1536. Let's take a

  1537. few minutes to

  1538. do that and

  1539. then Ellen's

  1540. going to sing

  1541. and lead us

  1542. and we can

  1543. stand when

  1544. maybe Ellen

  1545. can tell us

  1546. to stand at a

  1547. certain point.

  1548. But in the

  1549. beginning, let's

  1550. just listen to

  1551. the words and

  1552. then we'll

  1553. take communion

  1554. after that.
