  1. Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would move with might and power and deep conviction into our lives.

  2. Father, your Son took on flesh, becoming fully human while remaining fully God.

  3. He lived amongst us, and he died on the cross, and he died as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  4. And then he rose, Father, from the dead, triumphing over sin and over death and over hell itself.

  5. And Father, we know that he did this not just to save us, but to reveal you.

  6. So Father, help us not to treat with contempt that which your Son did at a great cost to himself.

  7. So Father, we ask that you help us to know you, to love you, to know about you, to trust you, to know, Father, that there is but one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God but three persons,

  8. that you desire us to know this for our great good and for our salvation.

  9. So Father, do a wonderful work in our lives this morning, and we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. Thank you.

  12. So, eventually, when I talk to people, they find out I'm a Christian, and we end up getting into maybe, you know, often when they find out I'm a Christian, nothing happens at all.

  13. They just, oh yeah, you're a Christian.

  14. It's the same thing as, I don't know, you like the Ottawa Senators, and it just, excuse me, the conversation just moves on.

  15. But sometimes, at some point in other words, they'll get into a bit of a conversation with me about some of the problems they have with the Christian idea of God.

  16. And the most common problem they have with the Christian idea of God or the Christian teaching of God is, of course, the problem of evil.

  17. How is it that there could be a God who's all-powerful and all-loving and there still be evil?

  18. The other thing which they often will bring up is the whole doctrine of the Trinity, that the Trinity is, well, there's a variety of problems.

  19. I'm not going to look at the problem of evil today.

  20. I probably will talk about it when we either talk later on about God being all-powerful or God being love,

  21. because those are some of the sermons that we'll be doing over the next few weeks.

  22. But we will talk this morning about the idea that God is three persons but one God.

  23. And people will tell me, George, this is a complicated idea.

  24. It's illogical.

  25. It's needless.

  26. It's confusing.

  27. One plus one plus one never adds up to one.

  28. It just doesn't make any sense.

  29. Why don't you make the idea a little bit simpler?

  30. It just sounds, George, as if it's either the type of thing that maybe, you know, Constantine and the church hierarchy were doing some type of a power play,

  31. so they came up with this idea for political reasons.

  32. You know, either that or it's, you know, all these crazed, sex-starved monks coming up with crazy types of ideas.

  33. And now you guys just continue to believe it.

  34. It makes no sense.

  35. You should make it simpler.

  36. And there's a variety of other things like this, so that it might be that it's, in fact, an offense to God to say that any mere human being,

  37. this would be what many of our Muslim friends, for instance, or Jewish friends would say to us,

  38. that it's a profound offense and blasphemous, in fact, to actually even think that any human being could be God or would even claim to be God.

  39. So why is it that Christians believe this?

  40. Well, just very, very simply, it has nothing to do with Constantine.

  41. It has nothing to do with politics in the Roman Empire.

  42. It has nothing to do with the power of the church.

  43. It has nothing to do with sex-crazed monks, nor does it have anything to do with just people wanting to be more complicated philosophers.

  44. The entire reason we believe in the Trinity is because of Jesus.

  45. Very, very simply, very, very plainly, it all comes back to Jesus.

  46. And, in fact, actually, once you understand that it's because of Jesus that we had to put the Christians trying to understand,

  47. just being really attentive to who he is and what he said and what he did,

  48. that we come up with these other creeds and stuff that try to put some extra language around it.

  49. It's all just really everything in the doctrine of the Trinity, in a sense, is tethered to Jesus,

  50. is anchored by Jesus, and grows out of what Jesus taught.

  51. So what I'd like to do, I'm going to do two sort of types of things this morning.

  52. Hopefully, I have enough time to do both of them.

  53. First of all, I want to sort of just give you three simple little things about Jesus that, in effect, if you get that,

  54. there'd only be one other one that if we did another sermon on the Incarnation, you'd add a fourth one,

  55. which I'll tell you after I've done the third one.

  56. But basically, everything about the thinking of the Trinity comes out of these three simple things that Jesus taught and did.

  57. And then the second part is we'll just reflect a little bit about why, actually,

  58. rather than being illogical, irrational, and overly complicated,

  59. it's actually profoundly good news for every one of us and worthy of meditation.

  60. So what's the first thing?

  61. The first one thing actually isn't very complicated or controversial.

  62. Jesus taught that there is only one God.

  63. Jesus taught that there is only one God.

  64. Now, we're going to look, if you turn in your Bibles,

  65. we're going to be looking at a lot of Bible verses this morning.

  66. And actually, one of the things that we're going to do is this.

  67. All of the texts, with sort of one exception at the end,

  68. and then another little exception that you'll see in a moment,

  69. I'm going to take all of my examples just from the Gospel of Mark.

  70. In a sense, what I'm going to do is,

  71. not that I'm trying to fight anybody,

  72. but I'm going to tie, in a sense, as Christians,

  73. we're going to tie both of our hands behind our back to defend this doctrine.

  74. And why?

  75. Because many of our friends,

  76. there are many of our friends who completely and utterly would discount the Gospel of John.

  77. They would say that the Gospel of John was written way too late,

  78. and so it's obviously just an invention by people who no longer knew Jesus.

  79. Now, I actually subscribe to a bit of a minority position among scholars.

  80. I think there's really very good reasons to believe that every single thing in the New Testament

  81. was written before the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70,

  82. and so that everything in the New Testament was not far too late for there to be still many eyewitnesses around.

  83. But we're going to take that.

  84. We won't talk about John.

  85. And then there's many other people who say that, in fact, there was Jesus' teaching,

  86. and then it very quickly got confused and perverted.

  87. And the person who perverted the teaching of Jesus was this man by the name of Paul.

  88. And so that if you could go back in time before Paul,

  89. you'd see that Jesus didn't teach these types of things because Paul confused everything.

  90. And by the same type of token, they'd say you can't look at Jude, you can't look at James,

  91. you can't look at Hebrews, you can't look at either of the epistles by Peter.

  92. And so what that leaves is that they'll sort of credit, often some of our credits,

  93. Mark, Matthew, and Luke, but especially Mark, because just about everybody,

  94. actually up until about 200 years ago, most people thought Matthew was the first Gospel that was written.

  95. But for the last 200 years, even the most skeptical scholars probably think that the Gospel of Mark

  96. was the very, very first biography of Jesus that was written, the very, very earliest.

  97. And it's the briefest.

  98. So what we're going to do is we're just going to look at Mark.

  99. We're going to tie not only both of our hands behind our back,

  100. we're going to tie up one foot so that we have to hop around and try to defend it.

  101. If you're right-footed, on your left foot.

  102. If you're left-footed, on your right foot.

  103. And that's what we're going to do.

  104. We're just going to look at Mark just to see, in fact,

  105. if these three key ideas that the Trinity grows out of can be found in the Gospel of Mark.

  106. The first, the earliest eyewitness testimony to what Jesus said and what he taught.

  107. So the first idea is that Jesus taught that there's only one God.

  108. Well, if you look at Mark chapter 12, verses 28 to 34, we'll see Jesus teach this very clearly.

    Mark 12:28–34

  109. We'll just look at one verse because it's not a controversial text, but I want you to see it.

  110. And it goes like this.

  111. And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another.

  112. That's Jesus and the scribes and the Pharisees.

  113. And seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked Jesus,

  114. which commandment is the most important of all?

  115. Which is the most important commandment?

  116. And then Jesus answered.

  117. And what he's about to answer, our Jewish friends will tell us,

  118. that he answers with the Shema.

  119. I don't know if I pronounced it correctly.

  120. That's close enough.

  121. The Shema.

  122. And it is the central piece of Jewish thought about God.

  123. It is the central, it is like their creed that there's only one God.

  124. And Jesus said it's the most important commandment.

  125. Listen to what he says.

  126. The most important is,

  127. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  128. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul

  129. and with all your mind and with all your strength.

  130. And then Jesus adds a second one,

  131. saying the second is this,

  132. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  133. There is no other commandment greater than these.

  134. And the scribe said to him,

  135. You're right, teacher.

  136. You have truly said that he is one and that there is no other beside him.

  137. And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding,

  138. with all the strength,

  139. and to love one's neighbor as oneself

  140. is much more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  141. So Jesus very clearly accepted the Jewish creed that there is only one God.

  142. Now, the second thing is that Jesus taught and modeled that,

  143. but just by the way here,

  144. you're going to now notice some differences between how I summarize my point

  145. and what's on the screen.

  146. And the reason is,

  147. is that one of the ways I do my sermons when there's an 8 and 10 o'clock

  148. is I create an email that gives the points to people.

  149. And then to help refresh myself,

  150. I write the points down by hand in my book.

  151. It's a way to help me remember the flow of the talk.

  152. I forgot my phone at home,

  153. so I have no email.

  154. So I'm using an earlier version of my points,

  155. but my words will be very similar to the words which are up there.

  156. But here's the second one.

  157. That Jesus taught that he is different from the Father.

  158. Or another way to put it,

  159. is that the Father and Jesus are not the same.

  160. That's what Jesus taught,

  161. and he modeled it many, many, many times.

  162. I'm just going to give you two particular examples.

  163. So if you look at Mark chapter 14, verses 32 to 36,

    Mark 14:32–36

  164. this is a very poignant scene.

  165. Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  166. and he knows that he's going to be captured very soon by soldiers,

  167. and he knows that he's going to be convicted falsely,

  168. and he knows he's going to die on the cross,

  169. and he knows all of these things.

  170. And so, you know, here this is actually a really important type of testimony

  171. because it captures Jesus at his most vulnerable and his most fragile,

  172. and see how he talks.

  173. And they went to a place called Gethsemane,

  174. and Jesus said to his disciples,

  175. Sit here while I pray.

  176. And he took with him Peter and James and John

  177. and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.

  178. And he said to them,

  179. My soul is very sorrowful, even to death.

  180. Remain here and watch.

  181. And going a little farther,

  182. he fell on the ground and prayed

  183. that if it were possible,

  184. the hour might pass from him.

  185. Here, listen to this.

  186. And he said,

  187. Abba, Father,

  188. all things are possible for you.

  189. Remove this cup from me,

  190. yet not what I will,

  191. but what you will.

  192. Very clearly, he's talking to his father, Abba.

  193. And it's a very different...

  194. He's obviously talking to a different person.

  195. He's not saying he's the same as the father.

  196. This becomes also very clear

  197. if you just sort of turn your page

  198. in most of your Bibles

  199. and look at Mark chapter 15,

    Mark 15:33–34

  200. verses 33 to 34.

  201. And now we see Jesus hanging on the cross,

  202. and he's dying.

  203. And here's what he says.

  204. And when the sixth hour had come,

  205. there was darkness over the whole land

  206. until the ninth hour.

  207. And at the ninth hour,

  208. Jesus cried with a loud voice,

  209. Eloi, Eloi,

  210. Lema sabachthani,

  211. which means,

  212. My God,

  213. my God,

  214. why have you forsaken me?

  215. Very clearly,

  216. he's talking to God.

  217. He's not talking to himself.

  218. He's saying that God

  219. has forsaken him.

  220. He's making a very clear distinction

  221. between him and God.

  222. So here's how we've seen so far.

  223. Jesus teaches very clearly

  224. that there is only one God.

  225. And he teaches very clearly

  226. that he is not the Father,

  227. that the Father and him

  228. are different.

  229. But here now,

  230. there's a third pillar,

  231. the third anchor point,

  232. so to speak,

  233. of the doctrine,

  234. out of which,

  235. which tethers the doctrine,

  236. of which the doctrine

  237. of the Trinity grows out of,

  238. is that Jesus taught

  239. that he is God,

  240. the Son of God.

  241. That Jesus taught

  242. that he is God,

  243. the Son of God.

  244. Now,

  245. at this point in time,

  246. often when I say this to people,

  247. they go,

  248. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,

  249. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,

  250. time out.

  251. And many people

  252. who might not know

  253. very much about the Bible

  254. know this one thing,

  255. especially when it comes to this.

  256. They'll say,

  257. but didn't Jesus say

  258. that the Father

  259. is greater than him?

  260. Therefore,

  261. he can't be God.

  262. Didn't Jesus say that?

  263. Now,

  264. it's very interesting

  265. because often

  266. the very same people

  267. who will tell me

  268. you can't trust

  269. the Gospel of John

  270. or et cetera, et cetera,

  271. what they actually do

  272. is they quote John to me.

  273. So if they quote John to you,

  274. something like that,

  275. you'll say,

  276. well, okay,

  277. whoa, whoa, whoa,

  278. that's a good point.

  279. Let's look at it.

  280. But actually,

  281. what they've actually

  282. just allowed you

  283. to tell them

  284. is dynamite

  285. that blows up

  286. their position.

  287. If you turn

  288. in your Bibles

  289. to John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  290. John chapter 14,

  291. verses 28 to 33,

  292. we'll see

  293. where Jesus says this.

  294. And actually,

  295. if you go back,

  296. I mean,

  297. John's Gospel

  298. is just filled

  299. with teaching

  300. about Jesus being God.

  301. And John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  302. and 15 and 16 and 17,

  303. this is Jesus speaking

  304. in the upper room

  305. to his disciples.

  306. Once again,

  307. he knows that he's

  308. going to be captured

  309. that evening.

  310. He knows he's going

  311. to die on the cross

  312. the next day.

  313. And so it's a very

  314. intimate final words

  315. that Jesus has

  316. with his disciples.

  317. But listen to

  318. what it says here.

  319. You heard me say

  320. to you,

  321. I am going away

  322. and I will come to you.

  323. If you loved me,

  324. you would have rejoiced

  325. because I am going

  326. to the Father

  327. for the Father

  328. is greater than I.

  329. And now I have told you

  330. before it takes place

  331. so that it was

  332. take place,

  333. you may believe.

  334. I will no longer

  335. talk much with you

  336. for the ruler

  337. of this world

  338. is coming.

  339. He has no claim

  340. on me,

  341. but I do

  342. as the Father

  343. has commanded me

  344. so that the world

  345. may know

  346. that I love the Father.

  347. Rise,

  348. let us go from here.

  349. Now,

  350. here's the dynamite

  351. in the text.

  352. In fact,

  353. you might want to talk,

  354. put it up on the screen,

  355. is that Jesus

  356. is teaching here

  357. that he and the Father

  358. have the same nature.

  359. Now,

  360. this is not often

  361. seen by us,

  362. but I,

  363. many of you know,

  364. if you don't know,

  365. I'm about to tell you,

  366. I have nine children.

  367. I can only father

  368. human beings.

  369. I didn't father

  370. nine children,

  371. three puppy dogs,

  372. two cats,

  373. and five guppies.

  374. A member of our congregation,

  375. a couple in our congregation,

  376. Laurie and Andrea,

  377. just this week

  378. gave birth

  379. to a healthy baby girl.

  380. Woo-hoo!

  381. And we all knew

  382. that whatever was going

  383. to come out of

  384. Andrea's womb

  385. was going to be human

  386. because humans

  387. beget humans.

  388. Cats,

  389. cats,

  390. dogs,

  391. dogs,

  392. guppies,

  393. guppies.

  394. That's just the way it is.

  395. Whatever I beget

  396. is going to be

  397. of the same nature of me.

  398. So actually,

  399. all of those times

  400. in the New Testament

  401. where God calls,

  402. like those earlier things,

  403. Abba,

  404. Father,

  405. where he's talking

  406. to his father,

  407. he's making a claim

  408. that God and him

  409. have the same nature.

  410. Now,

  411. usually those objecting

  412. to this,

  413. at this point in time,

  414. they don't quite know

  415. what to say

  416. because they thought

  417. they had the

  418. mic drop moment.

  419. They made their point,

  420. they drop it,

  421. and we move on.

  422. But this is the first

  423. of several pieces

  424. of evidence

  425. that Jesus,

  426. in fact,

  427. this is from John,

  428. but other people

  429. usually bring this up.

  430. I don't have to bring

  431. it up myself.

  432. But let's go back

  433. to Mark.

  434. So the first part

  435. of three is

  436. that Jesus taught

  437. that he and the Father

  438. have the same nature.

  439. The next one is

  440. that Jesus acted

  441. as only God can act

  442. with demons and sickness.

  443. go back to the Gospel

  444. of Mark

  445. and we'll see

  446. just an example

  447. of each of them

  448. that are very,

  449. very simple.

  450. Mark 1,

    Mark 1:25–26

  451. verses 25 to 26.

  452. There's a person

  453. with a demon,

  454. but Jesus rebuked him

  455. saying,

  456. be silent

  457. and come out of him.

  458. And the unclean spirit,

  459. the demon,

  460. convulsing the man

  461. and crying out

  462. with a loud voice,

  463. came out of him.

  464. And if you just sort of

  465. look down to Mark

    Mark 1:41–42

  466. chapter 1,

  467. verses 41 to 42,

  468. we'll see here

  469. Jesus dealing with

  470. somebody who is sick,

  471. who has leprosy.

  472. Moved with pity,

  473. Jesus stretched out

  474. his hand and touched

  475. him and said to him,

  476. I will be clean.

  477. He's been asked

  478. to heal him.

  479. I will be clean.

  480. And immediately

  481. the leprosy left him

  482. and he was made clean.

  483. Now once again,

  484. this doesn't seem

  485. like much,

  486. but it's something

  487. that only God can do.

  488. You and I

  489. have all prayed

  490. that somebody

  491. would be healed.

  492. And what we in a sense

  493. are expecting

  494. is that I say,

  495. Father or Jesus,

  496. please heal this person.

  497. And what we're hoping

  498. is that in a sense

  499. the Father,

  500. Jesus hears it

  501. and Jesus doesn't,

  502. the Father doesn't say,

  503. okay, well I'm going

  504. to get the right medicine

  505. or I'm going to ask

  506. somebody else to do it.

  507. No, what does the Father do?

  508. He says,

  509. demon be gone.

  510. He says,

  511. be healed.

  512. So you see here,

  513. Jesus doesn't pray.

  514. He acts exactly like God,

  515. but he doesn't sort of

  516. play act like God.

  517. He acts like God

  518. and what only God

  519. can do happens.

  520. The demon is gone.

  521. The leprosy is gone

  522. by a simple act

  523. of Jesus' will.

  524. Then we also see

  525. that Jesus forgives sin,

  526. but only God

  527. can forgive sin.

  528. It's a bit of a longer text,

  529. but if you look at Mark 2,

    Mark 2:1–12

  530. verses 1 to 12,

  531. we see this.

  532. Jesus forgives sin,

  533. but only God

  534. can forgive sin.

  535. Here's how the text goes.

  536. Actually,

  537. if we skip down

  538. clear to verse 5.

  539. So basically,

  540. there's a,

  541. you know,

  542. they're all in a room

  543. hearing Jesus teach.

  544. They want to bring,

  545. their friends want to bring

  546. this man to be healed.

  547. They can't get through,

  548. so they make a hole

  549. in the roof.

  550. They drop the man through.

  551. And here we take it up,

  552. the story at verse 5.

  553. And when Jesus saw their faith,

  554. he said to the paralytic,

  555. Son,

  556. your sins are forgiven.

  557. Son,

  558. your sins are forgiven.

  559. Jesus has never met

  560. this man before.

  561. This young man

  562. has done nothing

  563. against Jesus.

  564. Only one person

  565. can only,

  566. I can't come up and say,

  567. I forgive you

  568. of all your sins.

  569. You'd go,

  570. what?

  571. You can't forgive?

  572. That's just,

  573. that's what crazy people say.

  574. You know,

  575. that's what the people

  576. who mutter to themselves

  577. and wear the same clothes

  578. for five weeks in a row

  579. and wander the streets

  580. of downtown Ottawa,

  581. they say things like that.

  582. Not somebody like this.

  583. You can't just say,

  584. I forgive your sins.

  585. I might be able

  586. to forgive Chris

  587. if he does something to me.

  588. Daniel might be able

  589. to forgive me

  590. if I do something to Daniel.

  591. But no human being

  592. can just get up

  593. and forgive the sins

  594. of another person.

  595. That's only something

  596. God can do.

  597. And that's what Jesus says here.

  598. Look at it again,

  599. verse 6, 5,

  600. Son, your sins are forgiven.

  601. Now some of the scribes,

  602. verse 6,

  603. were sitting there

  604. questioning their hearts.

  605. Why does this man

  606. speak like that?

  607. He is blaspheming.

  608. Who can forgive sins

  609. but God alone?

  610. And immediately,

  611. Jesus, perceiving in his spirit

  612. that they questioned

  613. within themselves,

  614. said to them,

  615. Why do you question

  616. these things in your heart?

  617. Which is easier to say

  618. to the paralytic,

  619. your sons are forgiven,

  620. or to say,

  621. rise,

  622. take up your bed and walk?

  623. But that you may know

  624. that the Son of Man,

  625. that is Jesus,

  626. has authority on earth

  627. to forgive sins.

  628. He said to the paralytic,

  629. I say to you,

  630. rise,

  631. pick up your bed

  632. and go home.

  633. And the young man rose

  634. and immediately picked up

  635. his bed

  636. and went out before them

  637. so that they were all amazed

  638. and glorified God,

  639. saying,

  640. We have never seen

  641. anything like this.

  642. Now, obviously,

  643. there's no logical connection

  644. between being able

  645. to heal somebody

  646. and forgive sin.

  647. but there's a very profound

  648. spiritual,

  649. theological,

  650. and philosophical

  651. connection to it.

  652. Because once again,

  653. we see that Jesus does

  654. what only God can do.

  655. Only God can say,

  656. Paralysis,

  657. be gone.

  658. Health,

  659. replace what was causing

  660. the paralysis.

  661. I bestow it.

  662. Only God can do that.

  663. And in fact,

  664. you can't actually

  665. necessarily tell

  666. whether or not

  667. God has forgiven your sins.

  668. That's in a sense

  669. an invisible thing.

  670. But this is a very visible thing

  671. and it's obviously

  672. a very, very good test

  673. that it vindicates

  674. and validates

  675. what Jesus says.

  676. I mean,

  677. at the end of the day,

  678. the reason that

  679. there are any Christians

  680. in the world

  681. is because the death

  682. of Jesus upon the cross

  683. in fulfillment

  684. of centuries

  685. of prophecies,

  686. in fulfillment

  687. of centuries

  688. of preparation

  689. in terms of

  690. sacrifices

  691. and topology

  692. and prophecies

  693. and poetry

  694. and wisdom

  695. and all of this

  696. and also in the context

  697. of Jesus saying

  698. that he's going to die

  699. in a particular way

  700. and he's going to rise

  701. on the third day

  702. and Jesus' death

  703. upon his cross

  704. and his resurrection,

  705. the resurrection

  706. vindicates

  707. what Jesus says.

  708. It vindicates

  709. who he is.

  710. It vindicates

  711. his teaching.

  712. And this,

  713. in a sense,

  714. is just giving us

  715. a bit of a foretaste

  716. that God,

  717. the Son of God,

  718. Jesus is going

  719. to do something

  720. to vindicate

  721. all of our trust

  722. in his words

  723. and in his work.

  724. And what we clearly

  725. see here

  726. is that Jesus claims

  727. to be able

  728. to forgive sins,

  729. something that only

  730. God can do.

  731. And fourthly,

  732. God instituted

  733. the Sabbath

  734. and its rules.

  735. Very clear.

  736. You read the Old Testament,

  737. what our Jewish friends

  738. call the Torah

  739. or the Tanakh.

  740. God creates

  741. the Sabbath,

  742. God institutes it,

  743. God sets the rules.

  744. What does Jesus do?

  745. He says he is

  746. the Lord of the Sabbath

  747. and can change

  748. the rules.

  749. Only God can do that.

  750. Only God.

  751. Look at it,

  752. it's Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4:27–28

  753. verses 27 to 28.

  754. Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4:27–28

  755. verses 27 to 28.

  756. Maybe I have

  757. the wrong text

  758. which would just be

  759. very, very, very...

  760. Mark 2, sorry,

  761. I can't read

  762. my own writing.

  763. Mark chapter 2

    Mark 2:27–28

  764. verses 27 to 28.

  765. And it goes like this.

  766. And he said to them,

  767. they're having a debate

  768. about what Jesus'

  769. disciples were doing,

  770. and Jesus said to them,

  771. the Sabbath was made

  772. for man,

  773. not man for the Sabbath.

  774. So the Son of Man,

  775. referring to himself,

  776. is Lord,

  777. even of the Sabbath.

  778. He takes the prerogative

  779. of God

  780. in terms of the Sabbath.

  781. Jesus acted like

  782. only God can act

  783. when he stilled the storm.

  784. Jesus acted like

  785. only God can act

  786. when he stilled the storm.

  787. Look at Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4:39–41

  788. verses 39 to 41.

  789. They're in a storm

  790. with the disciples.

  791. It's a terrible,

  792. terrible storm.

  793. They think they're all

  794. going to die.

  795. And in verse 39,

  796. and he awoke

  797. and rebuked the wind

  798. and said to the sea,

  799. peace,

  800. be still.

  801. And the wind ceased

  802. and there was

  803. a great calm.

  804. And he said to them,

  805. why are you so afraid?

  806. Have you still no faith?

  807. And they were filled

  808. with great fear

  809. and said to one another,

  810. who then is this

  811. that even the wind

  812. and the sea obey him?

  813. Only God

  814. can speak to the wind

  815. and tell it to stop

  816. and it stops.

  817. To take the waves,

  818. even if all the wind

  819. and all the current

  820. all of a sudden

  821. was to die,

  822. those of you

  823. who've been on water

  824. know that it takes

  825. a long time

  826. for the waves

  827. to be still.

  828. Only God

  829. can actually tell

  830. the wind to stop

  831. and the waves to stop

  832. and for there

  833. to be calm.

  834. Jesus didn't pray

  835. that God would do it,

  836. he merely said it

  837. and it happened.

  838. Only God

  839. can do that.

  840. Jesus claimed

  841. that he would rule

  842. from God's throne.

  843. Jesus claimed

  844. that he would rule

  845. from God's throne.

  846. Mark chapter 14

    Mark 14:61–64

  847. verses 61 to 64.

  848. Mark 14

    Mark 14:61–64

  849. verses 61 to 64.

  850. Now this is also

  851. very significant

  852. because he also does,

  853. first of all,

  854. he's doing this

  855. while he's under oath

  856. and he's on trial

  857. for his life

  858. and he's under oath

  859. and hear how he responds.

  860. So they say to him,

  861. verse 61,

  862. but he remained silent

  863. and made no answer.

  864. Again,

  865. the high priest said,

  866. are you the Christ,

  867. the son of the blessed?

  868. Because they were

  869. devout Jews,

  870. they're not going to say

  871. the divine name,

  872. they're actually saying

  873. in a sense,

  874. are you the son of Yahweh?

  875. And back then,

  876. our culture

  877. is completely

  878. and utterly confused

  879. about what it means

  880. to be a human being.

  881. And that's

  882. a whole other sermon

  883. that ultimately

  884. goes back

  885. for the arguments

  886. in favor of abortion

  887. that ultimately

  888. make us all now

  889. very confused

  890. about what a human being is

  891. or what a human being isn't,

  892. what a person is

  893. and what a person isn't.

  894. Jewish people weren't,

  895. they understood

  896. that if he was

  897. the son of the blessed one,

  898. he is God.

  899. And they asked him

  900. that directly.

  901. And Jesus said,

  902. and here,

  903. if you go back

  904. to the book of Exodus,

  905. in chapter three,

  906. where God reveals himself,

  907. he reveals himself

  908. as I am.

  909. And if you read

  910. the Greek version

  911. of the Hebrew text,

  912. you see that Jesus says

  913. that he is,

  914. I am.

  915. He says,

  916. I am God

  917. to them

  918. in question

  919. as to whether he is

  920. the son of the blessed one.

  921. He says,

  922. I am.

  923. And then to emphasize

  924. that he said,

  925. and you will see

  926. the son of man

  927. seated at the right hand

  928. of the power

  929. and coming with the clouds

  930. on high of heaven.

  931. And here,

  932. it doesn't sort of mean

  933. like,

  934. you know,

  935. right now,

  936. Daniel's,

  937. you guys are all,

  938. you know,

  939. you folks over here

  940. are sitting at my right,

  941. but I'm obviously,

  942. no, no, no, no.

  943. The picture is

  944. of a co-regent

  945. of a very,

  946. very big throne.

  947. And that in fact

  948. that there's God

  949. on a throne

  950. and right on the throne

  951. with him

  952. at his right hand

  953. is Jesus.

  954. So he pronounces

  955. the divine name.

  956. He says,

  957. I am,

  958. I am God.

  959. And he says,

  960. I'm actually,

  961. you're going to see me.

  962. I will be sitting

  963. on God's throne

  964. with God.

  965. And how do they respond?

  966. And the high priest

  967. tore his garments

  968. and said,

  969. what further witnesses

  970. do we need?

  971. You have heard

  972. his blasphemy.

  973. What is your decision?

  974. And they all

  975. condemned him

  976. as deserving

  977. death.

  978. Jesus claimed

  979. that he was God,

  980. that he would rule

  981. from God's throne.

  982. And finally,

  983. and I'm going to leave

  984. Mark

  985. for the first time,

  986. look at the last text,

  987. Jesus accepted

  988. people's worship

  989. as he taught

  990. the Trinity.

  991. Jesus accepted

  992. people's worship

  993. as he taught

  994. the Trinity.

  995. Look at Matthew

    Matthew 28:17–20

  996. chapter 28

  997. verses 17 to 20.

  998. So I've gone away

  999. from Mark,

  1000. but I've gone to

  1001. another one

  1002. that even skeptics

  1003. will acknowledge.

  1004. In fact,

  1005. actually up until

  1006. about the year 1800,

  1007. this was viewed

  1008. as the earliest text.

  1009. But around the 1800s

  1010. it started to move

  1011. towards being Mark.

1012. And here's what it is.

  1013. It's after the

  1014. resurrection of Jesus.

  1015. He's died.

1016. He's risen from the dead.

  1017. Verse 17,

1018. And when they saw him,

  1019. they worshipped him,

  1020. but some doubted.

  1021. Now just sort of

  1022. pause here about this.

  1023. It's an accurate

  1024. translation,

  1025. but it's a little bit

  1026. misleading.

  1027. Now,

  1028. I've been speaking

  1029. for 27 minutes.

  1030. I don't know how many

1031. have I put to sleep.

  1032. I'm not asking for a test,

  1033. but I'm sure I've put

1034. some of you to sleep.

  1035. I don't know how many

  1036. of you were worshipping.

  1037. Why?

  1038. Because in a sense,

  1039. whatever worshipping

1040. you're doing is going on

  1041. behind your eyeballs

  1042. and in your heart.

  1043. But that's not what

  1044. he's referring to

  1045. because then how would

  1046. he know whether

  1047. anybody's worshipping him?

  1048. What they mean is,

1049. they fall on their face

  1050. prostrate.

  1051. They do FaceTime

  1052. in front of Jesus.

  1053. That's what the word

  1054. worship here means.

  1055. It's not only

  1056. bowing low,

1057. but actually on the ground.

  1058. They're,

  1059. think,

  1060. on the ground.

  1061. And the doubted

  1062. is that there's

  1063. some of them there,

  1064. they're not,

  1065. like,

1066. should it be like this?

  1067. Should I stand?

  1068. Like,

  1069. that's the doubting.

  1070. Like,

  1071. what do you do?

1072. Do you go full face

  1073. worship?

  1074. So that's what they're seeing.

  1075. If you were there

  1076. with a time machine,

1077. you went back in time

  1078. with a time machine,

  1079. you'd see Jesus appear

1080. to all of these disciples

  1081. after he's risen

  1082. from the dead.

  1083. bang,

  1084. huge number of them

  1085. right on their face

  1086. worshiping him.

1087. And Jesus doesn't rebuke them.

1088. You go look at the book of Acts.

1089. There's a time in the book of Acts

  1090. where Paul and Barnabas,

1091. Paul performs a mighty miracle,

1092. and all of a sudden

  1093. in the local dialect,

  1094. they said,

  1095. good grief,

1096. the gods have come down

  1097. and they go

1098. and they get their pagan priest

1099. and they come and want to start

  1100. offering sacrifices

  1101. to Paul and Barnabas.

  1102. And Paul and Barnabas

  1103. run and say,

  1104. no,

  1105. no,

  1106. no,

  1107. no,

  1108. no,

  1109. no,

  1110. no,

  1111. no.

  1112. You have to leave

  1113. all these idols.

  1114. I'm not God.

  1115. Don't worship me.

1116. But here Jesus accepts it.

1117. And then listen to what he does

1118. in the context of accepting worship.

  1119. Verse 18,

1120. And Jesus came and said to them,

  1121. All authority in heaven

  1122. and on earth

1123. has been given to me.

  1124. Go therefore

  1125. and make disciples

  1126. of all nations,

  1127. baptizing them.

  1128. Here's the key.

  1129. In the name,

  1130. singular.

  1131. Not in the names

  1132. of the Father

  1133. and of the Son

1134. and of the Holy Spirit,

  1135. but in the name,

  1136. singular.

  1137. And for Jewish

  1138. and Christian thought,

  1139. the name represents

  1140. identity.

  1141. It represents,

  1142. in a sense,

  1143. the whole person,

  1144. the whole nature

  1145. and person of God.

  1146. And so,

  1147. in a sense,

  1148. when he says,

  1149. in the name,

  1150. singular,

  1151. of the Father

  1152. and the Son

1153. and of the Holy Spirit,

  1154. we see here

  1155. in microcosm

  1156. the building blocks

1157. of all of the creeds

  1158. on the doctrine

  1159. of the Trinity.

1160. There is but one God

  1161. who exists

  1162. as three persons,

  1163. Father, Son,

  1164. and Holy Spirit.

  1165. All in the context

  1166. of receiving worship,

1167. the claim of all authority

  1168. in heaven and earth

  1169. being given to him.

1170. And then you continue on,

  1171. verse 20,

  1172. teaching them to observe

1173. all that I have commanded you

1174. as if he is God.

  1175. And then this,

  1176. and behold,

  1177. I am with you

  1178. always to the ends

  1179. of the age.

1180. Only God can be omnipresent.

  1181. Why do Christians

  1182. believe in the Trinity?

  1183. It's not because

  1184. of sexed,

  1185. crazed,

  1186. incel-type monks

  1187. or Constantine

  1188. having a power play.

  1189. It's all because

  1190. of Jesus.

1191. And if you just add

  1192. a fourth thing

1193. that Jesus was fully human,

1194. if I was to do

  1195. a fourth thing,

  1196. which I don't have time for,

  1197. and it just showed

  1198. how he was tired,

  1199. he cried,

  1200. he slept,

  1201. he had to eat,

1202. all those types of things,

  1203. you'd have all

  1204. of the building blocks

1205. of all of the doctrine

  1206. of the Trinity

  1207. and the Incarnation.

  1208. And the whole history

1209. of people who doubt it

1210. or try to go into heresy

  1211. are all people

  1212. who lose track

  1213. of these things

  1214. and can't account

  1215. for Jesus.

1216. And I've just used Mark.

  1217. Didn't even go into

  1218. Matthew, Luke,

  1219. John, Paul,

  1220. Hebrews.

  1221. Just Mark.

  1222. So here's the thing

  1223. that's very,

  1224. very important.

  1225. The doctrine

  1226. is tethered to Jesus,

  1227. it's anchored in Jesus,

  1228. it grows from Jesus.

  1229. It's really just merely

  1230. trying to honor Jesus

  1231. and what he taught.

  1232. And here's the thing

1233. with all of these teachings.

  1234. What you cannot say

  1235. after hearing this,

  1236. in this argument,

  1237. most people think

  1238. it goes back

  1239. to C.S. Lewis,

  1240. but Lewis learned it

  1241. from Athanasius

1242. 1,700 some odd years ago.

  1243. What you cannot say

  1244. after hearing this

  1245. is that Jesus was

  1246. merely a prophet

  1247. or a good man.

1248. Because we would all agree

  1249. that if in fact

  1250. Jesus knew

1251. that this was not true,

  1252. then he's a liar.

  1253. He's not a good man.

  1254. He's a deceiver.

1255. He cannot be a prophet.

1256. He cannot be a good man.

  1257. He cannot be

  1258. a trustworthy teacher.

  1259. He is a liar

  1260. and a deceiver.

  1261. And he deserves

  1262. whatever punishment

  1263. he gets.

  1264. I got a scamming

  1265. phone message

  1266. the other day

  1267. claiming that I had

  1268. to give information

  1269. about my bank account

1270. and I text in the back,

  1271. I hope you all

  1272. go to jail.

  1273. That was my response.

  1274. I hope you all

  1275. go to jail.

  1276. And you all think,

  1277. way to go.

1278. I'm going to do that too.

1279. Like that's the thing to do.

  1280. The other thing is,

  1281. and we all,

1282. we come to downtown Ottawa,

  1283. you go wandering around,

  1284. you're going to see

  1285. lots of crazy people

  1286. who think that

  1287. there are all sorts

  1288. of crazy things,

  1289. who hear from God,

  1290. who are God.

  1291. So Jesus either

  1292. thinks he's God

  1293. and he isn't,

  1294. and then he's a crazy man.

  1295. And you know what?

  1296. Nobody should worship

  1297. a crazy man.

1298. A crazy man needs help.

  1299. Or he's a liar.

1300. The only other option is,

  1301. and this is what

  1302. Christians believe,

1303. is that it's all true,

1304. that he is in fact

  1305. the Lord.

  1306. That God himself

  1307. has come into

  1308. his creation

1309. to do what only God

  1310. can do

  1311. to make himself known

  1312. and to redeem

  1313. human beings.

  1314. But some of you

  1315. might say,

  1316. George,

  1317. that's still so complicated

  1318. and all of that

  1319. type of stuff.

  1320. Like, you know,

  1321. George, okay,

  1322. those are all

  1323. very interesting points

1324. and I can sort of

  1325. see how it is

  1326. that you Christians

  1327. think this,

  1328. but George,

  1329. come on,

  1330. good grief,

  1331. compared to just

  1332. some other religions

  1333. that just very clearly

  1334. teach that there's

  1335. only one God

  1336. or other types

  1337. of religions

  1338. that teach that

  1339. all things are God.

  1340. I mean,

  1341. those are just,

  1342. they're simple,

  1343. they're more plausible,

  1344. they're obviously

1345. more likely to be true.

  1346. Well,

  1347. that's true.

  1348. They are vastly

  1349. more plausible

  1350. to be true.

  1351. But here's the problem,

  1352. and it's a very big problem.

  1353. This,

  1354. my wife and I,

1355. we married when we were 13

1356. and so coming up in the fall

  1357. we'll be married 40 years.

  1358. That's how we managed

1359. to be our young age

  1360. and still be married

1361. for such a long time.

  1362. And if you,

1363. if you ask my wife

  1364. if she really fully

  1365. understands me,

  1366. she'd say,

  1367. no.

  1368. Some things I understand,

  1369. but there's things

  1370. about George

1371. that are just a mystery.

  1372. Like,

  1373. I just,

  1374. I still haven't figured

  1375. these things out

  1376. about George.

  1377. And,

  1378. you know,

1379. we all know what it's like

1380. to try to even just

  1381. understand another human being.

  1382. Or actually even

  1383. understanding ourselves.

  1384. Like,

  1385. very,

  1386. very shallow people

  1387. think they understand

  1388. themselves.

  1389. But once you actually

  1390. get going,

  1391. like,

  1392. you realize there's

  1393. just complexities

  1394. in any human being

  1395. that we don't really

  1396. understand ourselves.

  1397. And I,

  1398. and I'm,

  1399. I've been living

  1400. with myself

  1401. for a long time.

  1402. And I've been,

  1403. you know,

  1404. with,

  1405. I've known Louise

  1406. a long,

  1407. long time

  1408. and I,

  1409. I still don't

  1410. fully understand her.

  1411. I can't get my mind

  1412. completely around her.

  1413. The only way

1414. that I could get my mind

  1415. completely around her

  1416. is if I'm more

  1417. than human.

  1418. But you see,

  1419. that's exactly

  1420. the type of false

  1421. step we're taking

  1422. with God.

  1423. You see,

  1424. if God

  1425. is easy

  1426. to understand,

  1427. it means

  1428. he can't be God.

  1429. it means

  1430. that he's less

  1431. than a human being.

  1432. We can have

  1433. a pretty good

  1434. understanding

  1435. of a leaf.

  1436. Leaf is way less

  1437. than a human being.

  1438. Or a bug,

  1439. way less than

  1440. a human being.

  1441. But we can't have

  1442. a very good understanding

  1443. of even a creature

  1444. the same as us,

  1445. a person.

  1446. Only someone

  1447. greater

  1448. than a human

  1449. could have

  1450. the knowledge

  1451. of a human

  1452. the way we have

  1453. the knowledge

  1454. of a bug.

1455. And so if we claim

  1456. that we have

  1457. that knowledge of God,

  1458. you know what

  1459. that's actually showing?

  1460. It's showing

  1461. that that understanding

  1462. of God

  1463. cannot possibly

  1464. be true.

  1465. I don't mean

  1466. to offend,

  1467. but it cannot

  1468. possibly be true.

  1469. Your conception

  1470. of God

  1471. is of a being

  1472. less than you,

  1473. not greater,

  1474. no matter how much

  1475. you add worship

  1476. to it.

  1477. And out of all

  1478. of the systems

  1479. of philosophy,

  1480. out of all

  1481. of the systems

  1482. of theology,

  1483. out of all

  1484. of the ideologies,

  1485. and out of all

  1486. of the religions,

  1487. there is only

  1488. one option

  1489. that portrays

  1490. God

  1491. as something

  1492. greater than

  1493. our mind.

  1494. In fact,

  1495. there's only

  1496. one teacher,

  1497. only one faith,

  1498. that is even

  1499. remotely

  1500. in the correct

  1501. direction

  1502. that if there

  1503. is a God,

  1504. what that God

  1505. must be like.

  1506. Now, of course,

  1507. this doesn't prove

  1508. the Christian

  1509. conception of God

  1510. is correct,

  1511. but there's no

  1512. other alternatives.

  1513. alternatives.

  1514. There are no

  1515. other alternatives.

  1516. Next week in the

  1517. blog, I'll give you

  1518. a suggestion of

  1519. some books to

  1520. help you understand

  1521. the doctrine of

  1522. the Trinity,

  1523. but you can at

  1524. least see that

  1525. while this idea

  1526. of plausibility

  1527. is very plausible

  1528. to us,

  1529. hence its

  1530. plausibility,

1531. it in fact is a

  1532. witness against

  1533. us that those

  1534. other conceptions

  1535. of God cannot

  1536. possibly be true.

  1537. There has to be

  1538. something about

  1539. understanding a

  1540. being who is

  1541. infinitely greater

  1542. than you,

  1543. because if you

  1544. think about it

  1545. for a second,

  1546. the difference

  1547. between you and

  1548. a leaf is a

  1549. finite difference.

  1550. The difference

  1551. between you and

  1552. a bug is a

  1553. finite distance.

  1554. The distance

  1555. between you and

  1556. God is an

  1557. infinite distance.

  1558. And so it is

  1559. that there must

  1560. be, that isn't

  1561. that the doctrine

  1562. of the Trinity

  1563. is irrational,

  1564. but it's actually

  1565. opening up to

  1566. the idea that

  1567. God in fact is

  1568. vastly greater

  1569. than you,

  1570. that it's as

  1571. if you were in

  1572. a subterranean

  1573. cavern and

  1574. they bring you

  1575. into a cavern

  1576. and all you

  1577. have is your

  1578. cell phone and

  1579. you can't even

  1580. use the flashlight

  1581. thing, all you

  1582. can do is turn

  1583. it on and all

  1584. you can do is

  1585. get the tiniest

  1586. little bit of

  1587. an idea,

  1588. but you just

  1589. have a sense

  1590. from that and

  1591. from the sound

  1592. that you are in

  1593. a huge space.

  1594. And occasionally

  1595. if you look,

  1596. you see things

  1597. that are wonderful

  1598. and beautiful and

  1599. you'd be filled

  1600. with awe and

  1601. filled with fear

  1602. because you're

  1603. in a tiny

  1604. light in a

  1605. huge space

  1606. and that is

  1607. exactly what it's

  1608. like with us

  1609. with God.

  1610. Our minds are

  1611. tiny and God

  1612. is vast and

  1613. he reveals true

  1614. truth to us even

  1615. though it in a

  1616. sense is far

  1617. bigger than our

  1618. minds.

  1619. I need to draw

  1620. this to a close,

  1621. but this is really

  1622. important good news.

  1623. The final point,

  1624. only God can

  1625. reveal himself and

  1626. only God can

  1627. provide the way

  1628. to himself.

  1629. If you think

  1630. about it for a

  1631. second,

  1632. if you sit

  1633. beside,

  1634. after church

  1635. you try to

  1636. have a conversation

  1637. with somebody

  1638. and they refuse

  1639. to even talk

  1640. to you,

  1641. even look at you,

  1642. even answer any

  1643. of your questions,

  1644. you can't know

  1645. them.

  1646. You need that

  1647. other person to

  1648. reveal something

  1649. about themselves

  1650. for you to know

  1651. them.

  1652. And so it is

  1653. with God.

  1654. Unless God

  1655. reveals himself,

  1656. we cannot know

  1657. him.

  1658. And at the same

  1659. time,

  1660. that only God,

  1661. if there is this

  1662. infinite God,

  1663. the only way who

  1664. can provide a way

  1665. towards God,

  1666. to God,

  1667. has to be God

  1668. himself.

  1669. It can't come

  1670. from a prophet

  1671. or philosophy

  1672. or technology

  1673. or technique

  1674. or spirituality.

  1675. It has to come

  1676. from God

  1677. or it can't

  1678. possibly be real.

  1679. Only the infinite

  1680. can provide a way

  1681. for the finite

  1682. to connect

  1683. to the infinite.

  1684. And that's what

  1685. we hear with

  1686. Jesus about

  1687. the gospel.

  1688. And it's not

  1689. just,

  1690. I mean,

  1691. here's the thing,

  1692. I mean,

  1693. things about this,

  1694. which I've run

  1695. out of time,

  1696. but they're so

  1697. precious.

  1698. Nothing grounds

  1699. the dignity

  1700. of human being

  1701. more than

  1702. the doctrine

  1703. of the Trinity

  1704. and this idea

  1705. that God,

  1706. the Son of God,

  1707. took on flesh

  1708. and lived amongst

  1709. us.

  1710. To understand

  1711. that God himself

  1712. could take into

  1713. himself our human

  1714. nature,

  1715. that he would walk

  1716. amongst us,

  1717. gives us most

  1718. profound dignity

  1719. to every human

  1720. being that we

  1721. could meet.

  1722. It doesn't matter

  1723. if they're from

  1724. China or from

  1725. Africa,

  1726. from North America,

  1727. it doesn't matter

  1728. if they're from

  1729. the far north,

  1730. from the Middle East,

  1731. that every God,

  1732. the Son of God,

  1733. took on flesh

  1734. and walked amongst

  1735. us and every

  1736. human being then

  1737. has this profound

  1738. dignity as a

  1739. result of the

  1740. doctrine of the

  1741. incarnation.

  1742. And that we see

  1743. that God didn't

  1744. just sort of reveal

  1745. himself in a way

  1746. that only smart

  1747. people can understand

  1748. or that only very

  1749. poetic and subtle

  1750. people can understand,

  1751. but just as a

  1752. young child

  1753. gets a true

  1754. sense of a human

  1755. being,

  1756. you can read even

  1757. the youngest child

  1758. stories about

  1759. Jesus and they

  1760. can start to

  1761. understand and

  1762. know him.

  1763. And even the

  1764. youngest child,

  1765. in fact,

  1766. young children have

  1767. an easier time of

  1768. understanding that

  1769. God loved you so

  1770. much that he came

  1771. to seek you and

  1772. find you and die

  1773. on the cross to

  1774. make you his child

  1775. because he loves

1776. you and that is a

  1777. story that even

  1778. the simplest child

  1779. can understand,

  1780. but the most

  1781. profound mystic

  1782. intellectual poet,

  1783. musician will

  1784. never exhaust,

  1785. but will also

  1786. understand.

  1787. And God does

  1788. not just sort of

  1789. reveal himself in

  1790. a way that he

  1791. can stand back

  1792. aloof, but he

  1793. comes among us

  1794. in the midst of

  1795. our mess and he

  1796. comes amongst us

  1797. in the midst of

  1798. our mess not to

  1799. condemn us, but to

  1800. die on the cross

  1801. and to provide a

  1802. way, the way,

  1803. by which we could

  1804. return to him.

  1805. You know, there

  1806. have been many

  1807. people, and I'm

  1808. not taking plot

  1809. shots, this is a

  1810. common thing about

  1811. all over the

  1812. world, but I'm

  1813. sure there are

  1814. many low-wage

  1815. workers in

  1816. North America

  1817. and many small

  1818. business owners in

  1819. North America who

  1820. wonder if high-paid

  1821. bureaucrats and

  1822. politicians effortlessly

  1823. make decisions about

  1824. lockdowns and throw

1825. them out of work and

  1826. put their business out

  1827. of business.

  1828. And they wonder if

  1829. these people know

  1830. what it's like to be a

  1831. low-wage worker.

  1832. Do they know what

  1833. it's like to be a

  1834. small business owner?

  1835. And they have very

  1836. good reasons to ask

  1837. that question.

  1838. But only in the

  1839. gospel do we know

  1840. that God knows what

1841. it's like for you to

  1842. be a human being.

1843. He is not a God

  1844. aloof from your

  1845. mess.

  1846. He came in the

  1847. midst of human

  1848. mess.

1849. And he will come in

  1850. the midst of your

  1851. mess.

  1852. He died bearing

  1853. your mess for

  1854. your mess so

  1855. that you could

  1856. be the adopted

  1857. child of God

  1858. when you put your

  1859. faith in Christ.

  1860. He comes in to

  1861. know us so that

  1862. we might know God.

  1863. Let's stand.

  1864. Bow our heads in

  1865. prayer.

  1866. Father, we confess

  1867. before you that we

  1868. just very casually

  1869. think that our

  1870. minds and our

  1871. minds formed by our

  1872. culture is the

  1873. measure of all

  1874. things.

  1875. And if you don't

  1876. meet the criteria of

  1877. our mind that

  1878. somehow that's your

  1879. problem, Father, we

  1880. don't even recognize

  1881. our profound pride

  1882. and arrogance.

  1883. And so, Father, we

  1884. thank you for your

  1885. word.

  1886. We thank you,

  1887. Father, that we have

  1888. a chance to gather

  1889. around your world and

  1890. to be confronted about

  1891. our pride and our

  1892. arrogance.

1893. And we ask, Lord, that

  1894. you would humble us,

  1895. that you would humble

  1896. us, that we would

  1897. acknowledge that you,

1898. if you are God, if

  1899. there really is one

  1900. answer in our prayer,

1901. that you have to be

  1902. vastly greater than

  1903. us.

1904. You have to be one that

  1905. our mind can't fully

  1906. understand, that we

1907. can only get bits and

  1908. glimpses that you

1909. give to us, that that

1910. has to be what is

  1911. real.

  1912. And, Father, we give

  1913. you thanks and praise

  1914. that you don't just

  1915. merely give us pieces

  1916. of information in the

  1917. abstract, but that you

  1918. came and walked

  1919. amongst us, that you

  1920. revealed yourself so

  1921. that we would know

  1922. you, that we would

  1923. know that you have

1924. provided a way, even in

1925. the midst of our mess,

1926. that you will be our

1927. God, that you would be

  1928. our Father, that Jesus

1929. would be our Savior, that

  1930. the Holy Spirit would

  1931. indwell us, that we

1932. would have a hope of

1933. heaven, a hope of glory,

  1934. a hope of a future,

  1935. that you have revealed

1936. yourself in such a way

1937. that we know that when

1938. we put our faith and

1939. trust in Jesus, that you

1940. will never let us go,

  1941. that you will never

  1942. forsake us, that you

1943. will never mock us, that

1944. you will never shame us,

  1945. that you will never

  1946. deride us, that you

  1947. only become our Savior

1948. to save us and to fit us

1949. from heaven, to do what

1950. we cannot do that only you

  1951. can do.

1952. Father, we ask that you

1953. would fill us with a

  1954. great comfort and great

  1955. confidence and trust in

  1956. Jesus, and a great,

  1957. great confidence that there

1958. is but one God, Father,

  1959. Son, and Holy Spirit,

  1960. three persons, one God,

  1961. forever and ever.

  1962. Amen.
