  1. Good morning. A quick word of prayer, and then we'll get into the text.

  2. Lord, bless us as we open your word, as we meditate and dwell on your attributes, on your very essence.

  3. Lord, we ask that you will open our eyes to your truth.

  4. Help us to read your word in a more profound way with this truth in our hearts.

  5. And Lord, help us to just focus this morning. In Jesus' name, amen.

  6. You may be seated. It's really good to see you guys. It feels a bit more full than normal. It's very good.

  7. So, like George mentioned, we're in this summer series. This is week two on the attributes of God.

  8. And, you know, I'll be honest with you. It's been...

  9. Normally, like George mentioned, we preach through books of the Bible, and it's not like I'm flippant when I prepare for a sermon.

  10. But looking at the attributes of God has been a bit of a...

  11. It's been a bit of a tough time because I am wanting to communicate the truth of God.

  12. The creator of heaven and earth, the very one that spoke everything into existence.

  13. And I don't want to get it wrong.

  14. We come before the living God and his word, and we realize that he deserves all of the divine majesty and glory.

  15. And we come before God, of course, through Jesus, knowing him and boldly coming before the throne of grace, calling God Father.

  16. But he is also God. He is also a king. He is also the Lord.

  17. And that's what we're going to be looking at.

  18. George talked about God's sovereignty, but another way of understanding it is the lordship of God.

  19. I wouldn't waltz my way into Windsor Castle and say, you know, what up, Liz?

  20. There is this aspect where we ought to come with reverence before the living God, right?

  21. So that's what we're going to be taking a look at this morning.

  22. Just a bit of a story that kind of helps me understand it.

  23. So all of these attributes are so interconnected.

  24. We can't say of God that he is all-powerful, but say that somehow he doesn't know everything.

  25. Or that he is everywhere, but, you know, he's actually, he's not in control of all of history.

  26. All of these attributes are connected.

  27. To take one away is to say that God is no longer God.

  28. So here's a story.

  29. In high school, I played basketball through high school, and we had this.

  30. So when you play team sports, or if you've ever played, like, varsity sports in high school,

  31. you have, like, the core guys that you play with.

  32. And then there's always a couple guys that show up for one season.

  33. They want to get in shape.

  34. They ride the pine.

  35. They're kind of like guys you beat up in practice and never, ever play.

  36. One of those guys was this guy that I grew up with.

  37. I don't, I haven't talked with him since.

  38. I don't know if he would watch this, so I'll use his real name.

  39. His name was Tommy.

  40. And after a practice, we decided we were going to go to an all-you-can-eat buffet

  41. because that's what we do when we're 16 and we have allowance or extra money.

  42. So I ride with Tommy, and I get in his car, and he doesn't have side mirrors in his car.

  43. And he doesn't have a rearview mirror.

  44. And in fact, the seat that I'm sitting on is super wiggly.

  45. The seatbelt, for sure, I mean, I put it on, but I'm almost convinced it didn't work.

  46. This car rattled.

  47. There was missing knobs all over the front dash.

  48. And I was scared.

  49. Tommy also didn't drive the speed limit.

  50. Tommy also had a number of tickets.

  51. He was a nice guy, very reckless guy.

  52. Anyways, I was very nervous getting in his car.

  53. But his car, although missing a bunch of parts, was still a car.

  54. It didn't cease to be a car because it was missing its side mirrors and rearview mirror,

  55. all these different knobs.

  56. I mean, I'm almost, I'd be surprised if the lights worked at night.

  57. I was glad we were driving in the day.

  58. But it was still a car.

  59. It was still a complete car.

  60. We're going to be looking at the sovereignty of God.

  61. And we're going to be looking at three things.

  62. We're going to be looking at God's omniscience.

  63. That is his complete and perfect knowledge of all things.

  64. His omnipotence.

  65. That's a way of just saying that God is completely powerful.

  66. That he is in control of all things.

  67. Unlimited power and influence.

  68. And also, finally, very connected to these two is his omnipresence.

  69. That is God being everywhere.

  70. And unlike Tommy's car, you take one of these pieces away and God ceases to be God.

  71. He's just not God.

  72. You can't have God without omnipresence or omnipotence or omniscience.

  73. So it's really important that we take a look at all three of these attributes.

  74. And there are more.

  75. We have a whole summer series on them.

  76. But we're just looking at these three.

  77. And how we look at them as individually, individual attributes, but never forgetting that they're interconnected to one another.

  78. And that to put more emphasis on one than the other or neglect one at the expense of the other is to do a disservice to God.

  79. And then we go back to why I had a bit of a tough week struggling through some of this.

  80. Anyways, if you have your Bible, we're going to be all over the Bible today.

  81. I think the majority, if not all, of the scripture references will be up on the screen.

  82. It would be great if you guys had your Bible.

  83. If you use a Bible app, that's fine as well.

  84. We have Bibles up here you can grab.

  85. But follow along with me.

  86. So we're looking at first God's omniscience.

  87. God knows everything.

  88. There's nothing that can be known that he doesn't know.

  89. It's not as though God is this studious, this big, beautiful mahogany desk surrounded by books, just studying everything.

  90. He somehow has developed this incredible bank of knowledge.

  91. God, just simply, by virtue of him being God, he knows everything.

  92. There is an inability for God to forget.

  93. It's not just that he knows everything, but it's impossible for him to forget something.

  94. Every little molecule that has ever existed, every scientific law, every thought of the human heart, he knows.

  95. There is nothing that you can think of that God doesn't know.

  96. And not only that, but he knows it a lot better than you.

  97. In fact, he knows everything exhaustively.

  98. A story that might help.

  99. So my brother-in-law, out in B.C., Christine's brother, is a birder.

  100. I don't know if there's any birders here, but Joel is a birder, and he's an excellent birder.

  101. So Christine, the kids, we're out for a walk.

  102. I was like, hey, it was a pond.

  103. Hey, there's a heron.

  104. I was like, that's a blue heron, Christine.

  105. She's like, actually, it's white, and I think that's a crane.

  106. And so we were like, well, what is it?

  107. It was kind of far off.

  108. It wasn't like right there.

  109. So what do we do?

  110. We snap a picture.

  111. We send it to Joel, and he goes, oh, that's a great egret, actually.

  112. And so neither of us were right.

  113. And I have never heard of an egret in my life.

  114. It had a long neck.

  115. It looked like a fancy kettle.

  116. I don't know.

  117. But Joel is a birder par excellence.

  118. He's on all sorts of online forums, and nobody knows that he's like 20-something, but he's

  119. this authority in his area.

  120. And yet Joel will spend the rest of his life trying to knock off his bucket list, his life

  121. list of birds to see.

  122. And my guess is that he will end up at some weird, obscure corners of planet Earth with

  123. a camera and binoculars trying to just glimpse at, I don't know, whatever birds.

  124. See, I don't know birds.

  125. Joel knows them.

  126. But he's going to spend his life, and he's not going to see every single bird.

  127. He will know all about avian taxonomy, but he will not know it exhaustively.

  128. And he is like the expert that I know, anyways.

  129. God's not like this.

  130. He knows everything exhaustively.

  131. It's not just that he knows all of the birds.

  132. He knows what they've eaten that morning and what's about to eat them.

  133. God knows everything exhaustively.

  134. This might be a very comforting thing for you.

  135. Because for God to know everything, it means that he knows some of the brokenness that you've

  136. gone through, some of the secrets that you are embarrassed of.

  137. The shame, some of the things that you're not willing to admit because you don't want to look weak.

  138. He knows it all, and there is nothing that will surprise him in your life.

  139. For those that are actually, that have gone through abuse and brokenness, those that have been neglected or misunderstood,

  140. God doesn't misunderstand you.

  141. He knows you exhaustively.

  142. He knows your situation exhaustively.

  143. And that's a great comfort.

  144. It's a great comfort.

  145. We'll see a bit later on and then in weeks to come.

  146. I think Matt Usherwood is going to be speaking on God being love.

  147. But because God, again, we don't talk about his different attributes apart from one another.

  148. We know that because God knows us exhaustively, and he loves and he desires to bless and not curse, to redeem,

  149. that that's a very, very comforting thing.

  150. That whether in this life or the next, there is a, you will know redemption, you will know peace,

  151. because God, who knows everything, is at work in your life to redeem and restore.

  152. It's a wonderful, wonderful truth.

  153. He's not ambivalent.

  154. He's not ignorant of your sorrow.

  155. He sees you.

  156. He really does.

  157. He knows your heart.

  158. But if you're a proud person, and if you're egotistical,

  159. and you've made it a bit of a thing to step on people to go hire yourself,

  160. or you have a real history of belittling people,

  161. abusing people, neglecting people, forgetting people,

  162. this truth is less of a comfort.

  163. It strikes fear in our hearts, in a sense, doesn't it?

  164. Because you can hide over all sorts of different things.

  165. If you are, you have enough clout, you can force people to sign, you know, very, very abusive,

  166. non-disclosure agreements.

  167. If you threaten people, whether that's, you know, a hardcore threat or soft threats.

  168. You try to sweep things under the rug.

  169. God sees it all.

  170. He sees it all.

  171. And in the same way that God is love, he is also justice.

  172. And he will not let things go unpunished.

  173. And if you, if you have been hurt by somebody,

  174. and there is injustice in your life that, that, that you, you have not been hurt,

  175. you, you are seen, and God will make everything right.

  176. God knows all.

  177. He sees all.

  178. And it's exhaustively how he sees things.

  179. It's, it really is something of a, to strike fear in the hearts of the proud and egotistical.

  180. Hebrews chapter 4, verses 12 and 13, it says this.

    Hebrews 4:12

  181. I'm just going to read off of my notes.

  182. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,

  183. piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow.

  184. And here it is, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  185. Verse 13, and no creature is hidden from his sight,

  186. but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

  187. And you will give account.

  188. Not as comforting when we understand that God sees all.

  189. Last week, George, one of the passages he preached on was the story of the paralytic being lowered through the roof.

  190. And Jesus seeing the faith of the paralytic's friends,

  191. forgiving their sins, healing the paralytic.

  192. I just want to draw your attention to one thing here, because this is the attributes of God.

  193. We must remember, as George preached on last week about the Trinity,

  194. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, three persons, one God,

  195. that Jesus himself knows all exhaustively.

  196. It says this in verse 21.

  197. I actually forgot to...

  198. Is it Mark, right?

  199. Mark chapter 3 or Mark chapter 4?

Mark 3 chapter mention Mark 4 chapter mention

  200. Mark chapter 2?

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  201. I do not know the Bible exhaustively.

  202. Verse 21 says,

  203. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question Jesus,

  204. or question, saying,

  205. Who is this who speaks blasphemies?

  206. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  207. Verse 22,

  208. When Jesus perceived their thoughts,

  209. he answered them,

  210. Why do you question in your hearts?

  211. And then he goes on.

  212. Jesus perceived in their hearts.

  213. It wasn't just...

  214. You can't really read this and say,

  215. Well, Jesus was great at body language.

  216. He kind of knew what they were thinking.

  217. He had a good guess.

  218. A good educated guess.

  219. He knew the hearts of them.

  220. Why?

  221. Because he is God.

  222. Because he is omniscient.

  223. He knows all.

  224. Psalm 139 says this,

  225. Verses 1 to 6,

  226. O Lord, you have searched me and known me.

  227. You know when I sit down, when I rise up.

  228. You discern my thoughts from afar.

  229. You search out my path and my lying down

  230. and are acquainted with all my ways.

  231. Even before a word is on my tongue,

  232. behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

  233. You hem me in behind and before

  234. and lay your hand upon me.

  235. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.

  236. It is high.

  237. I cannot attain it.

  238. God knows all.

  239. So I talked about the comforting bits.

  240. If you are a broken person,

  241. if you have gone through abuse,

  242. if you have been misunderstood, neglected,

  243. and then the proud aspect of it.

  244. But here is the thing.

  245. Aren't we all mixed bags?

  246. Aren't we people that have experienced hurt

  247. but also hurt people?

  248. Aren't we people that have been neglected

  249. and then go ahead and neglect others?

  250. Aren't we people that have been sinned against

  251. and yet sinned so grievously?

  252. Aren't we mixed bags?

  253. In the comfort of knowing that God knows all

  254. is also a great fear of ours that God knows all.

  255. Because we are bent people, broken people,

  256. a mixed bag, like I've said.

  257. So what do we do?

  258. God knows all.

  259. And I think ultimately we need to remember

  260. that the currency that,

  261. if you want to use that term,

  262. that we bring towards God is humility.

  263. And wherever we are in the midst of the cycle of sin

  264. and being sinned against abuse and being abused,

  265. we come humbly before God.

  266. And what do we do?

  267. We throw ourselves at His feet.

  268. You know all.

  269. How can I run away from you?

  270. Have mercy on me.

  271. Confess your sins and pray

  272. so that you may be healed.

  273. Every single Sunday,

  274. whether we do morning prayer,

  275. whether we do Holy Communion,

  276. we confess our sins together.

  277. We do.

  278. I would encourage you

  279. to confess your sins personally every day.

  280. Confess your sins to other people.

  281. But more than anything else,

  282. just confess your sins to God.

  283. Throw yourself at His feet,

  284. at His mercy.

  285. And remember,

  286. we don't pit one attribute against the other.

  287. God is rich in mercy,

  288. abounding in steadfast love.

  289. He desires to pardon.

  290. He desires to heal.

  291. He knows it all.

  292. Confess it.

  293. Don't hide from God.

  294. When we confess,

  295. we can be sure that He hears us.

  296. Why?

  297. Because Jesus has died,

  298. making a way,

  299. dying on the cross,

  300. being buried,

  301. rising again,

  302. so that through Him,

  303. we might have access to God.

  304. He hears our prayers.

  305. He hears our prayers,

  306. and He is just.

  307. And it's important for us to understand

  308. that as God is omniscient,

  309. He understands everything,

  310. that His knowledge is deeply connected

  311. and rooted in His wisdom,

  312. and in His justice,

  313. and in His love.

  314. It's not some,

  315. like I've mentioned,

  316. it's not just that God

  317. would just kill it on

  318. who wants to be a millionaire.

  319. I don't know if the show exists anymore,

  320. or Jeopardy.

  321. It's not a trivia type of knowledge,

  322. but it's rooted in Him as Creator,

  323. Him being the very essence

  324. of what truth is.

  325. We can trust that He is not going to take

  326. our confession and our lives,

  327. the knowledge of our lives

  328. that we're ashamed of,

  329. afraid of,

  330. and He's not going to abuse us with it.

  331. He's going to help us to order our lives

  332. according to His will,

  333. which is excellent.

  334. And this is connected, then,

  335. with God's omnipotence,

  336. because it's not just that God knows everything,

  337. but He has, then,

  338. the power over everything,

  339. the control over everything.

  340. And control, in many ways,

  341. sounds kind of like a yucky word to us,

  342. but it is not.

  343. Why?

  344. Because God knows everything,

  345. and He is perfect.

  346. We all of a sudden, again,

  347. I'm saying it so much,

  348. but we see how these attributes

  349. are so interconnected,

  350. and we can't talk about one without the other.

  351. So let's take a look at God's omnipotence,

  352. that God has complete control

  353. over all of creation,

  354. and also all of Himself.

  355. He is fully in self,

  356. it's perfect self-control,

  357. if you want to use that term,

  358. that there is no,

  359. that God relies on nothing

  360. for His own being.

  361. He is self-existing.

  362. That's going to be a topic

  363. in the upcoming weeks.

  364. There is nothing

  365. that is over God

  366. in terms of His control,

  367. His ability,

  368. His authority,

  369. but that doesn't mean

  370. God can just do anything.

  371. God is limited,

  372. but He's limited

  373. in that He can't do anything

  374. that's contrary to His will.

  375. Or His character.

  376. What does that mean?

  377. It means God can't do evil.

  378. He can't.

  379. God can't lie.

  380. It means God is completely consistent

  381. in every aspect of who He is.

  382. If He says something,

  383. it's going to happen.

  384. If He has promised something,

  385. it will come to pass.

  386. That God is trustworthy.

  387. It means that we can put our hope,

  388. ultimate hope,

  389. in God

  390. because He can only do

  391. things that are consistent with Him.

  392. It also means that God is rational.

  393. He is logical.

  394. Why?

  395. Because He is the creator.

  396. He created everything.

  397. And everything is good,

  398. He declared.

  399. It is,

  400. it is,

  401. it,

  402. it,

  403. all of creation,

  404. it works

  405. so interconnectedly.

  406. It's,

  407. it's just a beautiful thing

  408. that God has created everything

  409. that works in the way it does.

  410. He is a logical God.

  411. He is a rational God.

  412. It's important for us again

  413. because we're going to come across

  414. in the months and years to come,

  415. Bible studies,

  416. sermons,

  417. personal devotions,

  418. parts of Scripture

  419. that seem to contradict that.

  420. how is it that,

  421. that Abraham somehow

  422. has this ability

  423. to change God's mind?

  424. Or Moses for that matter?

  425. What of these passages

  426. where God seems to

  427. come across as petty

  428. or vengeful

  429. or irrational?

  430. What do we do

  431. when we come across

  432. those types of passages?

  433. Well, this is why

  434. a study,

  435. a sermon series rather,

  436. like what we're doing

  437. is excellent and important

  438. because it helps us

  439. then read the Bible

  440. properly.

  441. We're not going to

  442. read a passage

  443. that makes God look

  444. in a way

  445. that would negate

  446. the fact that He is God.

  447. Then it forces us

  448. to ask another question.

  449. Well, what is God

  450. really doing

  451. when His mind

  452. is changed

  453. by Moses?

  454. What's really going on

  455. in the story?

  456. What is God

  457. really trying

  458. to tease out?

  459. How is God

  460. incredibly relational

  461. in this passage?

  462. It forces us

  463. to wrestle

  464. with the passage

  465. afresh

  466. because if He's God,

  467. He is all-powerful.

  468. His mind can't change.

  469. He can't be manipulated.

  470. So it's really important

  471. that we go through

  472. a sermon series like this.

  473. It's going to help us

  474. to read the Bible

  475. in greater ways.

  476. But here's the thing.

  477. God is indeed

  478. all-powerful.

  479. Nothing happens

  480. apart from His knowledge

  481. or His will.

  482. So in Matthew 10, 29-31,

  483. this is the passage

  484. that George read.

  485. Jesus says,

  486. Are not two sparrows

  487. sold for a penny

  488. and not one of them

  489. will fall to the ground

  490. apart from your Father?

  491. But even the hairs

  492. of your head

  493. are all numbered.

  494. Fear not,

  495. therefore,

  496. you are more valuable

  497. than many sparrows.

  498. He knows

  499. the minutiae

  500. of creation.

  501. He's in control of it.

  502. But He's also in control

  503. of the big aspects

  504. of human history.

  505. Acts chapter 17, 26,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  506. it says this,

  507. And He made from one man

  508. every nation of mankind

  509. to live on all the face

  510. of the earth,

  511. having determined

  512. allotted periods

  513. in the boundaries

  514. of their dwelling place

  515. that God has directed

  516. human history.

  517. He has.

  518. There's a whole other

  519. aspect to this

  520. where we have to ask

  521. the question,

  522. well, why is there war?

  523. Has God somehow

  524. sanctioned evil

  525. and genocide?

  526. These are all really

  527. important questions.

  528. And the classic thing

  529. is either God

  530. is not all-powerful

  531. or all-good

  532. or all-knowing

  533. or He's evil.

  534. That's kind of like

  535. the classic apologetic

  536. pushback against God

  537. being in charge

  538. of everything.

  539. And I would just say

  540. that we do have

  541. human agency

  542. in all of this.

  543. We're not going to get

  544. into a discussion

  545. right now

  546. about free will

  547. versus predestination.

  548. But suffice it to say

  549. that God

  550. is in charge,

  551. in authority,

  552. wills everything

  553. that happens,

  554. and yet

  555. we have agency.

  556. We do.

  557. Not in a libertarian

  558. type of understanding

  559. of free will,

  560. but it's important

  561. that we understand

  562. that we have

  563. our very beings,

  564. that God,

  565. He is the one

  566. who animates us,

  567. that we have agency

  568. within Him,

  569. but nevertheless,

  570. we have agency.

  571. So that's why

  572. Genesis chapter 50,

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  573. the wonderful,

  574. beautiful,

  575. incredible story,

  576. one of my favorite

  577. stories in the Bible

  578. of Joseph

  579. being left for dead

  580. by his brother,

  581. sold into slavery,

  582. somehow,

  583. by God's

  584. incredible

  585. work,

  586. he gets up to

  587. essentially the second

  588. in command

  589. over all of Egypt,

  590. saves his people,

  591. and then at the end

  592. when his father dies,

  593. his brothers,

  594. they're like,

  595. Joseph's coming for revenge,

  596. and what does he say

  597. in Genesis 50,

    Genesis 50:20

  598. verse 20?

  599. He said,

  600. for what you intended

  601. for evil,

  602. the Lord intended

  603. for good,

  604. that even his brothers,

  605. their best efforts

  606. to kill Joseph,

  607. but really to stymie

  608. God's will,

  609. came to nothing.

  610. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:23

  611. verse 23,

  612. I'll read this one,

  613. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:23

  614. verse 23,

  615. this is the absolutely

  616. incredible sermon

  617. that Peter prays

  618. at Pentecost

  619. after the Holy Spirit

  620. comes.

  621. Verse 23,

  622. it says this,

  623. I'll read at verse 22,

  624. men of Israel,

  625. hear these words,

  626. Jesus of Nazareth,

  627. a man attested to you

  628. by God

  629. with mighty works

  630. and wonders

  631. and signs

  632. that God did

  633. through him

  634. in your midst

  635. as you yourselves know,

  636. verse 23,

  637. this Jesus delivered up

  638. according to the

  639. definite plan

  640. and foreknowledge

  641. of God,

  642. you crucified

  643. and killed

  644. by the hands

  645. of lawless men.

  646. In the same breath,

  647. God's plans

  648. can't get destroyed,

  649. but it's on you.

  650. You guys,

  651. you guys,

  652. you guys sent Jesus

  653. to the cross.

  654. It's a problem.

  655. That's a sin.

  656. Human agency

  657. at work

  658. and yet God's plans

  659. succeed everything.

  660. It's this incredible tension

  661. worth meditating on.

  662. In the end,

  663. it is still God

  664. who gives us agency.

  665. If you can put up

  666. the picture,

  667. I don't know if

  668. we'll end up getting up.

  669. Okay,

  670. so I pulled this

  671. from one of my textbooks

  672. I took from seminary

  673. and I like it.

  674. On the left,

  675. we see

  676. kind of like a,

  677. maybe,

  678. maybe an understanding,

  679. like a common understanding

  680. of free will.

  681. That God does his own thing,

  682. we do our own thing

  683. and there's these other

  684. kind of natural factors

  685. that influence us

  686. or it's kind of,

  687. but it's not really

  688. kind of connected.

  689. And in this scenario,

  690. God's will bumps up

  691. against our agency.

  692. But on the right,

  693. if we understand

  694. that in,

  695. that we have

  696. a very being in God,

  697. that God here,

  698. we have our agency

  699. within God's definite plan.

  700. It's not as if

  701. we have carte blanche

  702. do whatever we want.

  703. God has set up

  704. within creation

  705. like natural guardrails

  706. to our agency

  707. and yet we are still

  708. responsible for our sin

  709. and yet in this,

  710. there's nothing we can do

  711. to thwart the plan of God.

  712. Thanks for putting that up.

  713. And isn't this

  714. the gospel itself,

  715. a picture of God's omnipotence,

  716. where

  717. from all of,

  718. from the beginning

  719. of creation,

  720. mankind sins

  721. and God,

  722. because of his all-knowing,

  723. he knows this is going

  724. to go down,

  725. but then sets

  726. it in motion

  727. that Jesus

  728. would die on the cross

  729. for our sins

  730. and God would delight

  731. in his son

  732. dying on the cross

  733. for our sins.

  734. that God,

  735. he has this plan

  736. from the very beginning,

  737. by the way,

  738. it's not a plan B,

  739. it's always a plan A,

  740. and all of the junk

  741. in human history,

  742. how it goes down

  743. from genocides

  744. to natural disasters

  745. to wars

  746. to infanticide

  747. to all of this horrible things,

  748. things that happen,

  749. somehow God's plan

  750. doesn't get thwarted

  751. and Jesus himself,

  752. he dies on the cross

  753. as God foretold.

  754. If God wasn't all-powerful,

  755. he wouldn't be God

  756. and if he wasn't God,

  757. then all of the things

  758. that he said

  759. would come to pass

  760. would not come to pass.

  761. It would just be,

  762. it would be chance.

  763. It would be chance.

  764. We'd leave it to the fates.

  765. But that's not what happens.

  766. God not only knows everything,

  767. but is in control of everything,

  768. and by virtue of his goodness

  769. and his love

  770. and his justice

  771. and his mercy,

  772. he redeems and restores

  773. and he blesses

  774. and he removes the curse,

  775. he unites

  776. all of the wonderful things

  777. that we hope for.

  778. That's what he does.

  779. God knew that we would sin

  780. and he set in plan

  781. a motion

  782. before we even sinned

  783. to redeem us.

  784. And it was never thwarted.

  785. It was never thwarted.

  786. So if God's knowledge

  787. is everywhere

  788. and God's power

  789. is unending,

  790. then it would lead us

  791. to understand

  792. that God is everywhere.

  793. There's no place

  794. where his presence

  795. doesn't exist.

  796. So we're going to look

  797. at God's omnipresence

  798. and again,

  799. you can't take one

  800. without the other.

  801. So these,

  802. God's omnipresence

  803. is deeply,

  804. deeply,

  805. deeply rooted

  806. in his omniscience

  807. and his omnipotence.

  808. So simply put,

  809. if God is all-powerful

  810. in every place,

  811. in every situation,

  812. if he has knowledge

  813. of everything,

  814. then he is,

  815. by virtue of those two things,

  816. he is there,

  817. he is present.

  818. Psalm 139 again,

  819. verses 7 to 12,

  820. it says this,

  821. where shall I go

  822. from your spirit

  823. or where shall I flee

  824. from your presence?

  825. If I ascend to heaven,

  826. you are there.

  827. If I make my bed

  828. in the grave,

  829. you are there.

  830. If I take the wings

  831. of the morning

  832. and dwell in the uttermost

  833. part of the sea,

  834. even there your hand

  835. shall lead me

  836. and your right hand

  837. shall hold me.

  838. If I say,

  839. surely the darkness

  840. shall cover me

  841. and the light

  842. about me by night,

  843. even the darkness

  844. is not dark to you,

  845. the night is bright

  846. as the day,

  847. for darkness

  848. is as light with you.

  849. God created everything.

  850. Time does not constrain

  851. him nor place.

  852. He is with you

  853. in the darkest moments

  854. of your life.

  855. He is there.

  856. He is not absent,

  857. although it might feel

  858. like that.

  859. He is there.

  860. He truly is everywhere

  861. because he has created

  862. all things,

  863. but God's presence

  864. isn't just talked about

  865. in scriptures

  866. as God's ubiquity

  867. is being everywhere

  868. in all places,

  869. but his presence

  870. is talked about

  871. in terms of relationship

  872. with his people.

  873. From the garden

  874. to the tabernacle,

  875. to the temple,

  876. to God himself

  877. coming in the form

  878. of man in the incarnation,

  879. literally tabernacling

  880. amongst us,

  881. God desires

  882. to be present

  883. with his people.

  884. And he is.

  885. He's present.

  886. He's present right here.

  887. He is present

  888. when you hear

  889. the word proclaimed

  890. and the Holy Spirit

  891. is active

  892. and at work

  893. in your heart.

  894. If you're not a Christian

  895. and you call upon Jesus

  896. to save you

  897. from your sins,

  898. he is with you

  899. in a present

  900. relational way

  901. that is good pleasure.

  902. It is God's good pleasure

  903. to be present

  904. with his people.

  905. This is a wonderful thing

  906. about these attributes

  907. because the times

  908. that we feel

  909. like God is distant,

  910. we know that he is present

  911. and we can cry out to him.

  912. Here's a thing

  913. worth considering.

  914. This idea

  915. of an omnipotent God,

  916. an omniscient God,

  917. an omnipresent God,

  918. I think this is something

  919. that all human beings desire.

  920. But as we,

  921. as a society,

  922. as individuals,

  923. as country,

  924. whatever,

  925. when we deny

  926. the existence of God,

  927. when we deny

  928. the very truth

  929. of the scriptures,

  930. we don't all of a sudden

  931. become irreligious.

  932. We just shift our religion

  933. a little bit.

  934. So all of a sudden

  935. what we do is

  936. we attribute

  937. an omniscience

  938. to other things.

  939. Case in point,

  940. this isn't a bash

  941. against science one bit.

  942. I think science

  943. is fantastic.

  944. We have the life

  945. we have

  946. because of scientific

  947. advancements.

  948. But scientists

  949. aren't omniscient.

  950. They aren't.

  951. Some are very smart.

  952. But it seems like

  953. in the past while

  954. we have put

  955. scientists on a pedestal,

  956. in a sense

  957. deifying scientists.

  958. And I'm not suggesting

  959. we do the opposite

  960. of kicking them

  961. to the curb

  962. and treating them

  963. with contempt.

  964. That's not what I'm saying.

  965. But I'm saying

  966. we have

  967. disordered views

  968. of life.

  969. No scientist

  970. is omniscient,

  971. all-knowing.

  972. Only God is.

  973. No politician

  974. is omnipotent.

  975. No person

  976. is omnipotent.

  977. No thing

  978. is omnipotent.

  979. No job promotion

  980. is omnipotent

  981. as if we

  982. would get it.

  983. Like,

  984. every roadblock

  985. would be removed,

  986. every red light

  987. would turn green,

  988. there would be

  989. nothing impossible

  990. for us.

  991. Nothing is

  992. omnipotent like that.

  993. Everything will rust

  994. and decay

  995. or die

  996. or come up short.

  997. And that's not,

  998. again,

  999. a diss

  1000. to those things,

  1001. those people,

  1002. those situations.

  1003. There's nothing

  1004. wrong about getting

  1005. a promotion

  1006. and being excited

  1007. about it.

  1008. but all of those

  1009. things aren't

  1010. omnipotent.

  1011. They aren't.

  1012. All of these

  1013. things,

  1014. it's as if God

  1015. made us

  1016. to worship him.

  1017. And he put

  1018. desires that

  1019. would want

  1020. an omniscient

  1021. God,

  1022. an omnipotent

  1023. God,

  1024. and a God

  1025. that is everywhere.

  1026. It's like he

  1027. fashioned our hearts

  1028. to want that.

  1029. And that stuff

  1030. doesn't turn off

  1031. because we disregard

  1032. God.

  1033. He sees you,

  1034. he knows you,

  1035. he has the power

  1036. to save,

  1037. and we ought

  1038. to come humbly

  1039. before him.

  1040. We ought to,

  1041. we do.

  1042. Jesus is the

  1043. perfect picture

  1044. of God's sovereignty

  1045. because he is

  1046. all-knowing,

  1047. he is

  1048. all-powerful,

  1049. and he is

  1050. present

  1051. everywhere.

  1052. This is the

  1053. greatest longing

  1054. for our hearts,

  1055. our hearts

  1056. will be

  1057. restless

  1058. until they

  1059. find the

  1060. rest in

  1061. God,

  1062. until we

  1063. put ourselves

  1064. under the

  1065. sovereignty,

  1066. so to speak,

  1067. as if God

  1068. isn't sovereign

  1069. unless we

  1070. recognize him

  1071. as sovereign,

  1072. but if we

  1073. put ourselves

  1074. under the

  1075. sovereignty,

  1076. the lordship

  1077. of God,

  1078. we will,

  1079. we will,

  1080. we will not

  1081. know the

  1082. benefits and

  1083. the beauty

  1084. and the

  1085. truth and

  1086. the goodness

  1087. that is at

  1088. our fingertips.

  1089. We will

  1090. struggle with

  1091. the weight

  1092. of sin

  1093. and death

  1094. that hangs

  1095. over our

  1096. heads

  1097. all the time.

  1098. The guilty

  1099. consciences

  1100. that are

  1101. in this room,

  1102. and I say that

  1103. just because I

  1104. have it too,

  1105. I do,

  1106. I have a guilty

  1107. conscience,

  1108. it is like my

  1109. default,

  1110. I have other

  1111. bad defaults,

  1112. but that is a

  1113. big one.

  1114. All of the

  1115. guilty consciences

  1116. that could be

  1117. erased because

  1118. we don't

  1119. understand the

  1120. sovereignty of

  1121. God,

  1122. the lordship of

  1123. God,

  1124. the good rule

  1125. of God,

  1126. the healing

  1127. that is not

  1128. taking place,

  1129. the wayward

  1130. lives that are

  1131. being lived.

  1132. And that is not

  1133. to say that as

  1134. soon as you

  1135. put your,

  1136. you recognize

  1137. the lordship of

  1138. God,

  1139. things become

  1140. peachy,

  1141. and beautiful

  1142. immediately.

  1143. It is a process,

  1144. of course.

  1145. But this is what

  1146. we were designed

  1147. for.

  1148. We were designed

  1149. to be ruled

  1150. by God

  1151. in the most

  1152. loving,

  1153. just,

  1154. and incredible

  1155. way.

  1156. The end of

  1157. Romans chapter

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  1158. 11,

  1159. the big

  1160. three chapter

  1161. heavy weight

  1162. of a portion

  1163. of scripture

  1164. that talks of

  1165. God's sovereignty.

  1166. The apostle

  1167. Paul,

  1168. he says this,

  1169. and I'll just

  1170. say one thing

  1171. before I read

  1172. this portion

  1173. and then we'll

  1174. wrap things up.

  1175. Theology

  1176. has to lead

  1177. to doxology.

  1178. What do I mean

  1179. by this?

  1180. Knowing God

  1181. has to lead

  1182. us to praise

  1183. God.

  1184. If we understand

  1185. who God is

  1186. in light of

  1187. who we are,

  1188. how can we

  1189. not have a

  1190. burden lifted

  1191. and sing for joy,

  1192. whether that's

  1193. proverbially

  1194. or literally.

  1195. That something

  1196. excites you

  1197. in your heart

  1198. and you praise

  1199. God.

  1200. That theology

  1201. has to lead

  1202. to doxology.

  1203. And listen to

  1204. Paul.

  1205. After hammering

  1206. some of that

  1207. most thick

  1208. theology in

  1209. all of the

  1210. scriptures,

  1211. he ends

  1212. Romans 11

    Romans 11:33–36

  1213. verses 33

  1214. to 36

  1215. by saying

  1216. this,

  1217. Oh, the

  1218. depth of

  1219. the riches

  1220. and wisdom

  1221. and knowledge

  1222. of God.

  1223. How unsearchable

  1224. are his judgments.

  1225. How unscrutable

  1226. his ways.

  1227. For who has

  1228. known the mind

  1229. of the Lord

  1230. or who has

  1231. been his

  1232. counselor

  1233. or who has

  1234. given him

  1235. or who has

  1236. given a gift

  1237. to him

  1238. that he might

  1239. be repaid.

  1240. For from him

  1241. and through him

  1242. and to him

  1243. are all things.

  1244. To him be

  1245. glory forever.

  1246. Amen.

  1247. When we know

  1248. God, we are

  1249. moved by God

  1250. when we truly

  1251. know him.

  1252. And as we grow

  1253. in our knowledge

  1254. of him,

  1255. we continue

  1256. to be moved

  1257. by him.

  1258. The things

  1259. that we found

  1260. palatable before

  1261. lose its taste.

  1262. We feast on

  1263. God.

  1264. That is the diet

  1265. that will satisfy

  1266. us.

  1267. If you

  1268. are a Christian

  1269. whose heart

  1270. has grown cold,

  1271. feast on God.

  1272. Feast on him.

  1273. Feast on the

  1274. fact that he

  1275. is sovereign

  1276. over your life,

  1277. that he knows

  1278. everything.

  1279. He's all powerful.

  1280. He is everywhere.

  1281. He is with you.

  1282. Feast on that.

  1283. Feast on it

  1284. until it warms

  1285. your heart.

  1286. If you're not

  1287. a Christian,

  1288. this is the

  1289. life worth

  1290. living.

  1291. It is.

  1292. And you will

  1293. try to find

  1294. it elsewhere.

  1295. And you will

  1296. try to find it

  1297. elsewhere because

  1298. that's the way

  1299. you were created.

  1300. But it will

  1301. come up short

  1302. because you

  1303. are designed

  1304. you are made,

  1305. you are fashioned,

  1306. your heart

  1307. beats to know

  1308. the sovereign

  1309. lordship of

  1310. God.

  1311. And today is a

  1312. great day to

  1313. come to know

  1314. him.

  1315. Let's pray.

  1316. heavenly father,

  1317. heavenly father, we

  1318. thank you that you

  1319. truly are lord of

  1320. all, that you are

  1321. sovereign over all.

  1322. And that means that

  1323. you know everything

  1324. exhaustively, that you

  1325. are all powerful, that

  1326. you are completely

  1327. consistent, that you

  1328. are everywhere, that

  1329. there's no place where

  1330. you don't exist, no

  1331. place that can shut

  1332. you out.

  1333. And lord, there are

  1334. people here this

  1335. morning from all

  1336. sorts of different

  1337. walks, people here

  1338. from all, that have

  1339. had all sorts of

  1340. different weeks, some

  1341. good, some bad.

  1342. Some people that are

  1343. watching online or

  1344. are here that have

  1345. cold hearts towards

  1346. you, where there once

  1347. was warm hearts, or

  1348. people that just have

  1349. never known your

  1350. goodness.

  1351. Lord, would you help

  1352. us to see that

  1353. knowing you is the

1354. way we were meant to

  1355. live, that as we

  1356. engage in theology, we

  1357. will engage in true

  1358. doxology.

1359. When we know you, we

  1360. will praise you.

  1361. Lord, help us, especially

  1362. this afternoon and the

  1363. days to come, because

1364. we know that there is

1365. our flesh, there is the

  1366. devil, there is the

  1367. world that would want

1368. to rob us of this joy,

1369. this truth of who you

  1370. are.

1371. Help us to feast on you

  1372. daily.

1373. Help us to humbly feast

  1374. on you daily.

  1375. In Jesus' name.

  1376. Amen.
