  1. Okay, good morning, Watermark. The scripture reading comes from the book of Matthew, chapter 14.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the bulletin or on your own Bible.

  3. Starting in verse 13, we read,

  4. Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself.

  5. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

  6. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

  7. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said,

  8. This is a desolate place, and the day is now over.

  9. Send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.

  10. But Jesus said, They need not go away. You give them something to eat.

  11. They said to him, We have only five loaves here and two fish.

  12. And he said, Bring them here to me.

  13. Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish,

  14. he looked up to heaven and said a blessing.

  15. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples.

  16. And the disciples gave them to the crowds.

  17. And they all ate and were satisfied.

  18. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

  19. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

  20. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side,

  21. while he dismissed the crowds.

  22. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.

  23. When evening came, he was there alone.

  24. But a boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves.

  25. For the wind was against them.

  26. And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea.

  27. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said,

  28. It is a ghost.

  29. And they cried out in fear.

  30. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying,

  31. Take heart.

  32. It is I.

  33. Do not be afraid.

  34. And Peter answered him,

  35. Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.

  36. He said,

  37. Come.

  38. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.

  39. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink.

  40. He cried out,

  41. Lord, save me.

  42. Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him,

  43. O you of little faith, why did you doubt?

  44. But when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

  45. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying,

  46. Truly, you are the Son of God.

  47. This is the Word of God.

  48. Great.

  49. Thank you, Iris.

  50. Let's pray together and ask God to speak to us from his Word.

  51. Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit,

  52. we gather this morning to declare your praises,

  53. to sing and to worship you in song,

  54. to listen to the testimonies of brothers and sisters,

  55. to see the gospel demonstrated in baptism later,

  56. and to hear you speaking to us from your Word.

  57. God, we want to hear your voice, Lord.

  58. We don't just come to fill our minds with Christian information.

  59. We come to encounter you, the living God, in your living Word.

  60. And so come and speak to us this morning, Lord.

  61. Come and prepare our hearts, God.

  62. Come and help us to see the living Christ in these pages of Scripture.

  63. And help us to trust you, God,

  64. in the storms of life and the challenges that we face.

  65. God, help us to see you for who you are

  66. and to trust you and to worship you.

  67. Come and have your way, we pray.

  68. God, we pray for those of us maybe this morning

  69. that are particularly in the storms of life,

  70. are particularly in a very difficult place.

  71. God, won't you come to us?

  72. Won't you come and walk to us in the storm, God,

  73. and come and draw near to us?

  74. We really need you, Lord, and we want to walk with you.

  75. You know the challenges we face.

  76. You know the waves that buffered us.

  77. Christ, come and have your way in your life, in our lives, we pray.

  78. In your wonderful and gracious name, amen.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Making mature disciples, or making mature disciple-making disciples

  82. of Jesus Christ who impact Hong Kong for the glory of God.

  83. I hope that if you've been part of Watermark for some time,

  84. you'll recognize those words.

  85. Those are our mission statement as a church.

  86. A one-sentence summary that describes so much of who we are and what we're doing.

  87. Why do we do the things that we do?

  88. Why do we not do the things that other people do, other churches do?

  89. Why do we do things the way that we do them?

  90. What is it that we're on about?

  91. In many ways, those questions are answered in this one-sentence summary.

  92. We are a church which is laser-focused in its dedication and mission

  93. to make mature disciples who will then disciple others.

  94. And as the gospel gets into our lives, as we gospelize one another,

  95. it will overflow into every area of our lives so that we impact this great city of Hong Kong

  96. for God's glory and the good of our city.

  97. You should know this.

  98. We are not a particularly fancy church, and we're not trying to be a particularly fancy church.

  99. We're not trying to be a particularly big church or a well-known church or the talk of the town.

  100. We don't need our name written in lights.

  101. That can be somebody else's responsibility.

  102. What we are focused on, our purpose and existence,

  103. is to help us, those of us that are part of Watermark,

  104. to mature and grow in our faith,

  105. and to disciple and gospelize one another so that we bless our city for God's glory.

  106. And if you haven't worked out yet, let me tell you a little secret.

  107. The elder pastors, we have an agenda for your life.

  108. This is our hope and goal.

  109. And the reason why that is the case is because we believe Jesus has an agenda for our lives.

  110. This is Jesus' agenda for us, that we will become mature disciples of Jesus.

  111. Remember in Matthew chapter 4, Jesus walking along the Sea of Galilee or the Lake of Galilee,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  112. and he called some very ordinary people, fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary people.

  113. He says, come and follow me, which means come and be with me,

  114. come and become like me, come and do the things that I do.

  115. Be my disciple, my apprentice, my Talmudim.

  116. And then later on, at the end of Matthew, Matthew 28,

  117. Jesus says to those same disciples three years later,

  118. Okay, you're ready, you go out and make disciples.

  119. But unlike other rabbis in the first century,

  120. Jesus doesn't say, go and make disciples of yourself.

  121. You know, you become your own rabbi and make your own disciples.

  122. You go out into all nations and make disciples of me,

  123. baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  124. teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you.

  125. Jesus sends his disciples out to go and make other disciples.

  126. This is what Jesus has called us to do.

  127. This is what we're on about.

  128. When you join Watermark Church, again, I hope you realize this.

  129. If you didn't, let me tell you.

  130. You join a discipleship journey.

  131. You join a family, but not just a family,

  132. a family that is wanting to shape us and inform us and disciple us

  133. to become the people Christ has called us to be.

  134. On Friday night, Claire and Nikki and I were just talking about

  135. how it's possible to be a Christian for 20 years

  136. and yet still be a baby Christian, still be very immature.

  137. You can have 20 years experience, but only one year of maturity.

  138. We were just talking about how Nikki became a Christian last year

  139. and yet just how much she has grown and what a joy that has been.

  140. Now, all of this, what does this have to do with Matthew 14

  141. that Iris read to us?

  142. Well, great question.

  143. In our passage today, we're going to see one way

  144. how Jesus makes disciples.

  145. How Jesus grows us and matures us

  146. into the kinds of people that he wants us to be.

  147. Remember Matthew 4, Jesus calls his disciples.

  148. Matthew 28, he sends them out.

  149. In the middle, Matthew 14, we're going to see one angle

  150. of how Jesus grows us and matures us into his disciples.

  151. Okay?

  152. Now, before we dive in too much,

  153. one of the things we should notice in this passage

  154. is there are two stories that are very similar.

  155. They have the same outline and the same structure.

  156. If you've got your bulletin, you might want to open this up.

  157. Look at how they both begin.

  158. Both stories, the feeding of the 5,000 or the 10,000,

  159. however many thousand there were, there were many,

  160. and Jesus walking on the water,

  161. they both occur in a desolate place,

  162. a God-forsaken place.

  163. One occurs in the wilderness.

  164. I think it's verse 13.

  165. The other one occurs in the storm-tossed seas.

  166. In the biblical language,

  167. the wilderness is always a picture of a God-forsaken place.

  168. And when the seas are raging and storming,

  169. it's a picture of the world and the chaos

  170. and the evil of the world.

  171. That's why in Revelation chapter 4,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  172. remember the sea before the throne of God is crystal clear.

  173. It's a sea like glass because God's presence there

  174. has conquered the chaos of the world.

  175. And so both these stories occur in a God-forsaken place,

  176. so to speak.

  177. Notice also how both stories begin with Jesus

  178. retreating from the busyness of ministry

  179. in order to spend time in prayer.

  180. Look at verse 13.

  181. When Jesus heard these things,

  182. he withdrew from there in a boat

  183. to a desolate place by himself.

  184. Verse 23.

  185. Or 22.

  186. Jesus made the disciples get into a boat

  187. and go across the other side.

  188. After he had dismissed the crowds,

  189. he went up to the mountain by himself to pray.

  190. And both stories begin with Jesus retreating,

  191. withdrawing,

  192. to spend time with his Father,

  193. communing with his Father in prayer.

  194. And this is something we see throughout Jesus' ministry.

  195. He's constantly withdrawing

  196. from the demands of life

  197. and the pressures of ministry

  198. to spend time with his Father

  199. so that when he does minister,

  200. he does so out of a healthy soul,

  201. out of having been close with God.

  202. And something God's been speaking to us about as a church,

  203. that we need to slow down.

  204. We need to be more like Mary,

  205. not so much like Martha.

  206. We need to be those that commune with God.

  207. And then, of course,

  208. notice both stories.

  209. Jesus performs this outrageously awesome miracle, right?

  210. Jesus feeds 10,000 people from a McDonald's Happy Meal.

  211. Okay?

  212. Jesus walks on the storm-tossed sea,

  213. a couple of hundred meters,

  214. maybe a kilometer or so,

  215. out in the middle of the lake.

  216. Jesus then walks in the water

  217. and he quietens with the word

  218. all the wind and the waves.

  219. He brings them into submission.

  220. This is not just some party trick

  221. or something a magician could conjure up,

  222. something an illusionist could conjure up

  223. to wow the crowds.

  224. This is nothing less than the sovereign God

  225. who is in control and charge of all creation.

  226. And, of course, that's what we're meant to see,

  227. that Jesus is the sovereign creator God.

  228. The one who speaks the bread into being

  229. is the one who spoke galaxies and universes

  230. and stars into being.

  231. The one who commanded the wind and the waves to be quiet

  232. is the one who commanded their existence

  233. in the first place.

  234. And so here we have these two stories

  235. paralleled very similar in structure

  236. in which tells us about Jesus,

  237. tells us about his prayer life,

  238. it tells us that he's the sovereign creator God.

  239. But in addition to that,

  240. it's gonna tell us how does Jesus

  241. form and shape disciples after himself?

  242. Okay, that's the big idea

  243. that I think Matthew wants us to see here.

  244. And so, like any good sermon,

  245. we've got three points, okay?

  246. And so the first one is this.

  247. How does Jesus make mature disciples?

  248. Well, the one way he does it

  249. is he reveals our need for him.

  250. He reveals our need for him.

  251. Jesus Christ would often deliberately include

  252. his disciples into situations

  253. which were way beyond their control,

  254. way outside of their comfort zone,

  255. or their ability,

  256. so that they had to rely on him,

  257. and doing so would learn to trust him

  258. and worship him.

  259. You see that?

  260. Jesus would often bring his disciples

  261. into a situation

  262. in which they're way out of their league,

  263. and in doing so,

  264. they are forced to then realize

  265. we don't have what it takes,

  266. we need him,

  267. and in doing so would rely on him

  268. and would trust him and worship him.

  269. Look at verse 15 and 16 in your bulletin.

  270. It's evening time,

  271. which means it's late afternoon in this context.

  272. Jesus had been teaching.

  273. The disciples noticed it's pretty late.

  274. And so they come to Jesus and they say,

  275. Jesus, time to wrap things up.

  276. Let's send these people away

  277. so that they can go and get food.

  278. And look what Jesus says,

  279. verse 15.

  280. They don't need to go away.

  281. You give them something to eat.

  282. Where are the disciples going to get enough food

  283. to feed 10,000 people?

  284. Where are they going to find enough money

  285. to buy this?

  286. Clearly Jesus is asking them

  287. to do the impossible.

  288. And of course Jesus knows

  289. exactly what he's doing.

  290. He's not reluctant to help them.

  291. Jesus doesn't feed them later on

  292. because he says,

  293. okay, fine, I guess I'll do a miracle.

  294. We kind of left things a little late.

  295. Jesus knows the whole time

  296. exactly what he's doing.

  297. He's drawing his disciples in.

  298. He's saying, no, you do it.

  299. So that they'll come to the place

  300. where they realize they can't do it

  301. so that Jesus will show them who he is.

  302. And Jesus does the same things

  303. a couple of hours later.

  304. He sends his disciples out onto the lake

  305. knowing full well a momentous storm

  306. is coming their way.

  307. Verse 22 says,

  308. Jesus made the disciples go out into the boat.

  309. And the English translation there

  310. is not very clear.

  311. The Greek says,

  312. he compelled them.

  313. He forced them.

  314. Jesus deliberately forced them

  315. to go in the boat onto the storm

  316. knowing that a storm is coming.

  317. Jesus draws them in

  318. and puts them in a situation

  319. way beyond their ability

  320. so that they're forced to recognize

  321. their need for him.

  322. And when Jesus does come

  323. to rescue them

  324. and Peter says,

  325. it's you, the Christ?

  326. If it really has caused me

  327. to walk on the water

  328. and Jesus says,

  329. come, walk to me

  330. on the raging seas.

  331. Obviously, it's beyond Peter's ability.

  332. And notice how in both of these stories,

  333. Jesus leaves things really late.

  334. I mean, somebody needs to help Jesus

  335. with his timekeeping.

  336. Early on, he could have said,

  337. listen guys, it's getting late.

  338. Why don't you go and get a meal?

  339. Right?

  340. And then we can continue this tomorrow.

  341. But Jesus leaves things

  342. till it's too late

  343. so that the disciples

  344. will be in a place

  345. where they have to trust him.

  346. And notice in the second story,

  347. Jesus sends his disciples

  348. after sunset,

  349. he goes up into the mountain

  350. and then it tells us

  351. that he comes to them

  352. in the fourth watch of the night

  353. which is between 3 a.m.

  354. and 6 a.m. in the morning.

  355. In other words,

  356. Jesus sends them out after sunset

  357. and eight to 10 hours later,

  358. he comes to rescue them.

  359. Jesus knows that a storm's coming.

  360. He could have just said,

  361. listen guys,

  362. best you stay here tonight.

  363. Tomorrow we'll go over the water.

  364. But he compels them to go out.

  365. Do you see what Jesus is doing?

  366. He's orchestrating things

  367. so that the disciples

  368. are out of their depth

  369. so that they'll be forced

  370. to rely on him.

  371. Friends, as you read the scriptures,

  372. God is constantly doing this.

  373. Remember how Moses

  374. in Exodus chapter 3

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  375. comes face to face with God

  376. and God says,

  377. I've heard the cries of my people.

  378. I've seen their agony.

  379. I know what they're going through.

  380. I'm sending you

  381. to go and speak to Pharaoh

  382. and deliver them.

  383. And Moses says,

  384. Jesus,

  385. God,

  386. great idea.

  387. I'd love to go.

  388. There's only one problem.

  389. I can't really speak.

  390. There's a problem here.

  391. You're going to have to

  392. send somebody else.

  393. And God says,

  394. no,

  395. you're the exact person I want.

  396. I will go with you.

  397. Moses goes to Pharaoh.

  398. Pharaoh eventually

  399. saves,

  400. delivers them

  401. or sets them free

  402. by the blood of the Lamb.

  403. God rescues them

  404. way beyond

  405. what Israel could do.

  406. They're saved.

  407. They're coming out of Egypt.

  408. They're rejoicing

  409. until they come to a roadblock.

  410. There's a sea in front of them.

  411. There's mountains

  412. on the side of them.

  413. Pharaoh's army

  414. is chasing them behind.

  415. They're cornered

  416. all four sides.

  417. Where are they going to go?

  418. God rescues them.

  419. Remember how

  420. God says to Abraham,

  421. Abraham,

  422. you're going to be

  423. the father of many people.

  424. All the descendants

  425. of the world

  426. are going to be blessed

  427. through you.

  428. You're going to have

  429. descendants as great

  430. as the stars in the sky,

  431. the sea and the sand shore.

  432. I'm going to bless you

  433. and your family.

  434. There's just one problem.

  435. Your wife is barren

  436. and you cannot have

  437. any children.

  438. What's he going to do?

  439. Friends,

  440. remember how God

  441. calls Gideon

  442. to lead the battle

  443. against the Midianites.

  444. There's 120,000

  445. Midianites

  446. camped against them

  447. and Gideon says,

  448. okay,

  449. I'll get my army.

  450. Okay,

  451. 30,000.

  452. That's all I can muster

  453. but that'll have to do.

  454. 30,000,

  455. we'll take on 125,000.

  456. God says,

  457. no, no, no,

  458. your army is too big.

  459. Just whittle them down.

  460. Okay,

  461. they get whittled down

  462. to 10,000.

  463. Okay,

  464. God,

  465. this is not looking good.

  466. 10,000 against 120,000

  467. but I guess

  468. if you're with us

  469. we can do it.

  470. God says,

  471. no,

  472. your army is still too big.

  473. Whittle them down

  474. to 300.

  475. Okay,

  476. now you're 300.

  477. Now you're ready to go.

  478. Friends,

  479. you see what God is doing?

  480. He's constantly

  481. bringing his people

  482. to the place

  483. where they're way

  484. out of their depths,

  485. where they cannot

  486. save themselves

  487. so that they must

  488. rely on God,

  489. the one who saves them.

  490. And when we read

  491. the New Testament,

  492. we see the same thing.

  493. The apostles

  494. who accomplish

  495. great things for God

  496. are constantly

  497. being led by God

  498. to the place

  499. where they do not

  500. have control.

  501. Listen to what

  502. the apostle Paul says

  503. in 2 Corinthians 1.

  504. He says,

  505. We do not want you

  506. to be unaware,

  507. brothers,

  508. of the affliction

  509. we experienced in Asia.

  510. We were so utterly

  511. burdened

  512. beyond our own strength

  513. that we despaired

  514. of life itself.

  515. Indeed,

  516. we felt we had received

  517. the sentence of death,

  518. but that was to make us

  519. rely not on ourselves,

  520. but on God

  521. who raises the dead.

  522. Paul goes on later

  523. in the same book

  524. in 2 Corinthians

  525. and he says,

  526. I will boast

  527. more gladly

  528. of my weakness

  529. so that the power

  530. of Christ may rest in me.

  531. For the sake of Christ,

  532. I'm pretty happy

  533. to be full of weakness,

  534. insults,

  535. hardships,

  536. persecutions,

  537. calamities.

  538. When I am weak,

  539. when I've come

  540. to the end of myself,

  541. that's when I know

  542. I'm strong

  543. because that's when

  544. Christ's strength

  545. is at work within me.

  546. This is the way

  547. that God is working.

  548. This is how God

  549. grows his people.

  550. One of the greatest

  551. Christian thinkers

  552. of the last century,

  553. an amazing man

  554. by the name of J.I. Packer,

  555. he passed away

  556. earlier this year

  557. in his mid-90s

  558. or maybe late last year

  559. and he wrote a book

  560. based on 2 Corinthians

  561. called

  562. Weakness is the Way.

  563. It's a very unusual book

  564. and it's all

  565. unpacking 2 Corinthians

  566. but listen to what he says.

  567. He says,

  568. the way of the true

  569. spiritual strength

  570. leading to real fruitfulness

  571. in the Christian life

  572. and service

  573. is the humble,

  574. self-distrustful way

  575. of consciously

  576. recognized weakness

  577. in spiritual things.

  578. The Apostle Paul

  579. demonstrated

  580. a sustained recognition

  581. that feeling weak

  582. in oneself

  583. is part of the cause

  584. for the Christian life

  585. and therefore

  586. something one may

  587. properly be content with.

  588. In this,

  589. Paul models

  590. that the discipleship,

  591. spiritual maturity

  592. and the growth

  593. that all believers

  594. are called to pursue,

  595. for all Christians,

  596. the likelihood

  597. is that as our

  598. discipleship continues,

  599. God will make us

  600. increasingly weakness

  601. conscious

  602. and pain aware

  603. so that we may learn

  604. with Paul

  605. that when we are

  606. conscious of being weak

  607. and able

  608. out of our depth,

  609. then and only then

  610. may we truly become

  611. strong in the Lord.

  612. God is doing

  613. and that's what God is doing.

  614. That's what Jesus

  615. is doing with these

  616. disciples.

  617. He brings them

  618. to a situation

  619. where they do not

  620. have what it takes,

  621. where they cannot do

  622. what he's asking them

  623. to do

  624. so that they'll look

  625. to him

  626. and he will show

  627. them who he is.

  628. He's revealing

  629. their weakness.

  630. He does this

  631. with Paul.

  632. He does this

  633. with all Christians.

  634. Another great example

  635. of this

  636. is a man by the name

  637. of George Mueller.

  638. If you have heard of him,

  639. he was a German Christian

  640. in the 19th century,

  641. the 1800s.

  642. He grew up

  643. in not a Christian home

  644. but his dad

  645. wanted him to be

  646. a pastor,

  647. a clergyman

  648. because in Germany

  649. in the 19th century,

  650. if you worked

  651. for the Lutheran church,

  652. the state paid

  653. your salary

  654. and it was a very

  655. lucrative career.

  656. These days we become

  657. bankers

  658. and those days

  659. you became pastors

  660. and maybe still

  661. these days

  662. we become pastors,

  663. right?

  664. If you think of

  665. celebrity pastors

  666. online,

  667. that's a whole

  668. other story.

  669. Anyway,

  670. George Mueller.

  671. His dad wants him

  672. to become a clergyman

  673. so he sends him

  674. off to seminary

  675. but he doesn't

  676. give rocks

  677. for God

  678. and the church.

  679. In fact,

  680. when his mom

  681. is dying

  682. on her deathbed,

  683. he's busy gambling

  684. and getting drunk

  685. down the road.

  686. He was addicted

  687. to gambling.

  688. He's an alcoholic

  689. as a teenager,

  690. 14 years old.

  691. Anyway,

  692. he goes off to seminary,

  693. doesn't care at all

  694. but he thinks

  695. he's going to get

  696. a good degree,

  697. he's got a good

  698. career lined up.

  699. At the end

  700. of the seminary,

  701. a friend drags him

  702. into a prayer meeting

  703. and he encounters

  704. the living God

  705. just like Mark

  706. in hospital,

  707. right?

  708. He confesses,

  709. I believe in God

  710. the Father,

  711. I believe in Christ

  712. the Son,

  713. I believe in the Holy Spirit.

  714. He falls to his knees

  715. and his life

  716. is turned around

  717. and he realized

  718. that God has called

  719. him to ministry

  720. but not to become

  721. a rich clergyman,

  722. he becomes a missionary

  723. and so he goes

  724. to England

  725. and he decides

  726. to work with

  727. the poor,

  728. the vulnerable,

  729. children of society,

  730. the orphans

  731. and the marginalized

  732. and he starts

  733. educating

  734. the poor people

  735. of English society

  736. and he starts

  737. a school

  738. and he starts

  739. an orphanage

  740. and by the end

  741. of his life

  742. he has started

  743. 120 schools

  744. educating

  745. 120,000

  746. children.

  747. He pretty much

  748. no fee

  749. paying schools,

  750. educated them

  751. himself,

  752. paid for it

  753. largely his own way.

  754. In addition to that

  755. he sets up

  756. tens of orphanages,

  757. has 10,000 orphans

  758. come through his care

  759. that he feeds,

  760. educates

  761. and provides

  762. for them.

  763. He prints,

  764. he decides

  765. people need Bibles

  766. so he prints

  767. 300,000 Bibles,

  768. 1.5 million

  769. New Testaments

  770. he prints

  771. and distributes

  772. to those

  773. that don't have

  774. Bibles

  775. and he does this

  776. refusing

  777. any fundraising

  778. efforts.

  779. People came to

  780. him and said

  781. let's fundraise

  782. and he said

  783. no, no, no

  784. God will provide

  785. let's not ask

  786. anybody for money

  787. so he wouldn't

  788. ask for any money.

  789. 10,000 orphans

  790. 120,000 children

  791. in his schools

  792. a million Bibles

  793. in his ministry

  794. he raised

  795. the equivalent

  796. of 120 million

  797. pounds

  798. worth of money

  799. in today's value

  800. without any

  801. fundraising

  802. no government

  803. support.

  804. But listen to

  805. what George Mueller

  806. writes

  807. he says

  808. we should not

  809. shrink back

  810. from opportunities

  811. where our faith

  812. may be tested.

  813. The more I am

  814. in a position

  815. to be tested

  816. in faith

  817. the more I have

  818. the opportunity

  819. of seeing God's

  820. help and deliverance.

  821. Every fresh instance

  822. in which he helps

  823. and delivers me

  824. will increase my faith.

  825. The believer

  826. should not shrink

  827. back from situations

  828. positions or circumstances

  829. in which his faith

  830. may be tested

  831. but he should

  832. cheerfully embrace

  833. them as opportunities

  834. to see the hand

  835. of God

  836. stretched out

  837. in help

  838. and deliverance.

  839. Thus will his faith

  840. be strengthened.

  841. And we can tell

  842. story after story

  843. after story.

  844. Friends this is what

  845. God is doing here.

  846. This is what he's doing

  847. with the disciples.

  848. And if you want

  849. to take discipleship

  850. of Jesus seriously

  851. which if you're part

  852. of Watermark

  853. we hope you do

  854. and we will help

  855. you do that

  856. God will do

  857. the same for you.

  858. He will call you

  859. into situations

  860. which are way

  861. beyond your control

  862. outside of your ability

  863. way beyond you

  864. in order to reveal

  865. your need for him

  866. to expose your weakness

  867. so that you can come

  868. to the end of yourself

  869. and wholly rely

  870. on him.

  871. How does God grow us?

  872. He reveals our need

  873. for him.

  874. Now

  875. God does more than that.

  876. In revealing

  877. our need for him

  878. he doesn't just want

  879. to humble us

  880. and say

  881. be humble

  882. suckers

  883. realize you're just human

  884. I am God

  885. rah rah rah

  886. he wants to reveal

  887. our need for him

  888. so that we can see

  889. who he is.

  890. And that's the second thing

  891. to reveal

  892. who he is.

  893. In these stories

  894. Jesus does

  895. two things

  896. to reveal

  897. who he is.

  898. We spoke about

  899. the fact that

  900. the miracles

  901. reveal him

  902. to be mighty

  903. and sovereign

  904. that he's the creator

  905. God of all creation

  906. the sovereign Lord.

  907. But Jesus wants

  908. to show his disciples

  909. more than just

  910. that he's powerful

  911. and mighty

  912. he wants to show them

  913. that he is the one

  914. true God

  915. the creator of heaven

  916. and earth

  917. the sustainer

  918. of everyone

  919. and everything

  920. as the catechism says

  921. that he is

  922. the one true God

  923. of Israel

  924. the God of Abraham

  925. Isaac and Jacob.

  926. Look at the first

  927. story with me

  928. in chapter 14.

  929. Jesus takes these

  930. loaves and fishes

  931. and he multiplies them

  932. into a feast

  933. for many thousands

  934. of people.

  935. But in verse 19

  936. Matthew doesn't comment

  937. on the fish at all

  938. he only talks about

  939. the loaves.

  940. Look at what he says

  941. in verse 19

  942. it says

  943. then he ordered

  944. the crowd

  945. to sit down

  946. in the grass

  947. taking the loaves

  948. and two fish

  949. he looked up

  950. to heaven

  951. then he broke

  952. the loaves

  953. gave them to

  954. the disciples

  955. and they gave

  956. them to the crowd.

  957. In other words

  958. he deliberately

  959. neglects the

  960. comment on the fish

  961. and I think

  962. what Matthew

  963. is doing here

  964. he wants his

  965. congregation

  966. to think back

  967. to another time

  968. in Israel's history

  969. where God

  970. fed his people

  971. in the wilderness

  972. with bread.

  973. Matthew wants

  974. us to see

  975. that Jesus

  976. is the God

  977. that provided

  978. manna in the

  979. wilderness

  980. for his people.

  981. In other words

  982. Matthew wants

  983. us to see

  984. just as God

  985. provided manna

  986. for Moses

  987. and the people

  988. in the wilderness

  989. so Jesus

  990. providing bread

  991. for his people

  992. here

  993. Jesus is

  994. Jehovah Jireh

  995. the great provider.

  996. But in the second

  997. story it's even

  998. more obvious.

  999. Look at verse 27

  1000. with me.

  1001. The disciples

  1002. are in the boat

  1003. the wind and the

  1004. waves are buffeting

  1005. them.

  1006. Jesus comes

  1007. walking to them

  1008. on the water

  1009. and by the way

  1010. it says here

  1011. when they were

  1012. a long way off

  1013. the Greek says

  1014. many hundreds of

  1015. meters possibly

  1016. a kilometer and

  1017. a half into the

  1018. water.

  1019. Jesus wasn't just

  1020. walking on the

  1021. shore he wasn't

  1022. just walking in

  1023. water that deep

  1024. sometimes we think

  1025. maybe Jesus

  1026. walked on the

  1027. water and was

  1028. only an inch deep

  1029. Jesus is about

  1030. a kilometer in

  1031. he walks towards

  1032. them and they

  1033. are freaked out

  1034. because they

  1035. think they see

  1036. a ghost and

  1037. look at what

  1038. Jesus says

  1039. take heart

  1040. it is I

  1041. do not be

  1042. afraid.

  1043. Now again

  1044. the English

  1045. translation here

  1046. doesn't really

  1047. help us.

  1048. The Greek says

  1049. take heart

  1050. it is I am

  1051. do not be

  1052. afraid.

  1053. Do you see

  1054. where Jesus is

  1055. going?

  1056. If you're new

  1057. to church this

  1058. might be new

  1059. to you.

  1060. In the Old

  1061. Testament God

  1062. gives himself

  1063. a name.

  1064. He gives

  1065. himself a very

  1066. unusual name.

  1067. the name

  1068. that God

  1069. gives himself

  1070. is I

  1071. am or I

  1072. am that I

  1073. am.

  1074. Remember when

  1075. Moses meets

  1076. God at the

  1077. burning bush in

  1078. Exodus chapter

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  1079. 3 God

  1080. says Moses

  1081. go to Pharaoh

  1082. and tell him

  1083. God says let

  1084. my people go.

  1085. And Moses

  1086. says well there

  1087. are lots of

  1088. gods which

  1089. god is it?

  1090. Who should I

  1091. say?

  1092. And God

  1093. says tell

  1094. them that

  1095. Yahweh I

  1096. am who I

  1097. am says let

  1098. my people go.

  1099. God gives

  1100. himself a name

  1101. and the name

  1102. is this unusual

  1103. name that he

  1104. is.

  1105. It describes

  1106. his essence.

  1107. God simply

  1108. is.

  1109. He is the

  1110. one true

  1111. supreme God.

  1112. He's not just

  1113. the God of

  1114. the Jews.

  1115. He's not just

  1116. the God of

  1117. Israel.

  1118. He's not just

  1119. the God of

  1120. America or

  1121. the God of

  1122. white people.

  1123. He is the

  1124. one true God.

  1125. He's not just

  1126. the God of

  1127. ancient times.

  1128. He's not a

  1129. God limited to

  1130. a time or

  1131. geography or

  1132. space.

  1133. He is who

  1134. he is.

  1135. He is the

  1136. supreme being

  1137. of all

  1138. time,

  1139. all nations,

  1140. all countries,

  1141. all galaxies,

  1142. all everything.

  1143. He is who

  1144. he is.

  1145. He is the

  1146. absolutely

  1147. supreme being.

  1148. And his

  1149. name is

  1150. I am

  1151. Yahweh.

  1152. In fact so

  1153. important was

  1154. his name that

  1155. if anyone

  1156. abused it

  1157. they would be

  1158. stoned to

  1159. death.

  1160. God's name is

  1161. sacred.

  1162. But it's more

  1163. than that.

  1164. It's his

  1165. covenant faithful

  1166. name.

  1167. Whenever God

  1168. in the Old

  1169. Testament uses

  1170. his name

  1171. Yahweh it's

  1172. meant to

  1173. remind God's

  1174. people of his

  1175. covenant faithfulness

  1176. that when God

  1177. has spoken he

  1178. will deliver.

  1179. Friends look at

  1180. what Jesus says

  1181. here.

  1182. Do not be

  1183. afraid.

  1184. I am is

  1185. here.

  1186. He's saying

  1187. the God that

  1188. rescued his

  1189. people from

  1190. Egypt, the

  1191. God who saved

  1192. them and

  1193. delivered them

  1194. from Babylon,

  1195. the God who

  1196. for generations

  1197. has been there

  1198. for his people

  1199. is with you

  1200. in the boat.

  1201. Do not be

  1202. afraid.

  1203. Friends in

  1204. contemporary

  1205. Christianity we

  1206. think that God

  1207. rescues us from

  1208. the storms of

  1209. life as Mark

  1210. said earlier so

  1211. that we can get

  1212. back on with

  1213. our lives.

  1214. We come to

  1215. church, we say

  1216. a prayer, we sing

  1217. some songs, we

  1218. drop some money

  1219. in the offering,

  1220. God will forgive

  1221. us, he'll rescue

  1222. us from our

  1223. storms, save

  1224. us so that we

  1225. can get back to

  1226. a comfortable and

  1227. easy life.

  1228. But Jesus

  1229. wants to come

  1230. to us in the

  1231. storms of life

  1232. so that we

  1233. can see him

  1234. for who he

  1235. is.

  1236. That he will

  1237. open our

  1238. eyes to see

  1239. that he is

  1240. God and that

  1241. we are not.

  1242. That we will

  1243. be humbled to

  1244. worship him.

  1245. When Jesus

  1246. comes to us in

  1247. the storms of

  1248. life it's not

  1249. just to help

  1250. us get along

  1251. so that life

  1252. can be more

  1253. comfortable, it's

  1254. that he can

  1255. save us, that

  1256. he can rescue

  1257. us so that we

  1258. can see him

  1259. for who he

  1260. is.

  1261. And that's

  1262. what he does

  1263. here in these

  1264. stories.

  1265. He comes

  1266. to his

  1267. disciples, they're

  1268. way out of

  1269. their league, and

  1270. he says, let me

  1271. show you who I

  1272. am.

  1273. I am not just a

  1274. wise man, I'm

  1275. not just a sage, I'm

  1276. not just a good

  1277. moral man, I'm not

  1278. just a teacher, I am

  1279. who I am, I am the

  1280. eternal, uncreated,

  1281. sovereign, supreme

  1282. God, I am God.

  1283. Friends, are you

  1284. going through a

1285. storm in life at the

  1286. moment?

  1287. some challenge that

  1288. is beyond you?

  1289. Do you feel

  1290. overwhelmed, do you

  1291. feel buffeted by the

  1292. storms and the wind

  1293. and the wave?

  1294. Jesus wants to

  1295. reveal himself to

  1296. you in that place.

1297. He wants you to see

1298. him for who he is.

  1299. Friends, maybe you

  1300. hear this morning

  1301. and you're not a

  1302. Christian, and things

1303. are not going well in

  1304. your life, and you

  1305. think, where is God?

1306. If only he cared, maybe

  1307. he would do

  1308. something.

  1309. Friends, because he

  1310. cares, he's doing

  1311. something.

  1312. He's bringing you

  1313. right into the eye

  1314. of the storm.

  1315. He's bringing you to

  1316. a place where you

  1317. cannot save yourself

1318. so that you can see

1319. you need him, so that

  1320. he can save you.

  1321. Friends, maybe Jesus

  1322. brought you here this

  1323. morning to save and

  1324. rescue you.

1325. He took Mark to a

  1326. hospital bed.

  1327. He took the disciples

1328. into the eye of the

  1329. storm.

  1330. Maybe he's doing the

  1331. same for you because

1332. he wants to save you.

  1333. Jesus grows in his

  1334. disciples by bringing

  1335. them to the place

  1336. where they need him,

  1337. by revealing himself

  1338. finally and fully.

  1339. Thirdly, let's look,

  1340. Jesus calls us to

  1341. worship him.

  1342. Now, in Matthew's

  1343. gospel, it's not very

  1344. clear because he

  1345. doesn't say how the

  1346. crowds responded after

  1347. they'd been fed this

  1348. massive feast, but in

  1349. John's gospel, John

  1350. tells us.

  1351. They cry out, this

  1352. indeed is the prophet

1353. who has come into the

  1354. world.

  1355. Jesus feeding the

  1356. 5,000 leads to

  1357. worship.

1358. But look at the end

  1359. of the second story.

  1360. Jesus rescues the

  1361. disciples there in the

  1362. boat.

  1363. Look at verse 33.

  1364. He quietens the wind

  1365. and the waves.

1366. He gets into the boat

  1367. with them.

  1368. And then Matthew tells

1369. us, those in the boat

  1370. worshipped him, saying,

1371. truly you are the son of

  1372. God.

1373. Up until this point in

  1374. Matthew's gospel, the

  1375. disciples have never said

  1376. that.

  1377. In Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  1378. God says at Jesus'

1379. baptism, this is my son

  1380. with whom I'm well

  1381. pleased.

  1382. In Matthew chapter 8,

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  1383. the demons confess, you

1384. are the son of God.

  1385. But the disciples have

  1386. never said that.

  1387. Until now.

  1388. And the reason is

  1389. because no first

  1390. century Jew would

  1391. ever think of ascribing

  1392. to another human being

  1393. divinity.

  1394. I mean, that's the

  1395. height of blasphemy.

  1396. You get stoned for

  1397. that.

1398. No Jew would ever call

  1399. another man God.

  1400. And yet here the

  1401. disciples, having seen

  1402. who Jesus is, they

  1403. worship him.

  1404. Truly you are the

  1405. son of God.

  1406. Friends, Jesus wants

1407. to bring us to the

  1408. place of seeing how

  1409. desperately we need

  1410. him.

  1411. Jesus wants to reveal

1412. himself to us and then

  1413. Jesus calls us to

  1414. worship him.

  1415. You know, that's the

  1416. point of Sunday

  1417. worship, why we gather

  1418. on Sundays.

1419. We don't just gather to

  1420. fill our minds with

  1421. Christian information.

1422. You can do that at

  1423. home online.

1424. You can read a book

  1425. or read the Bible.

  1426. We gather because six

1427. days a week we are

  1428. buffeted by the storms

  1429. of life.

  1430. We are buffeted by

  1431. false truths that tell

1432. us that life is found

1433. in all sorts of other

  1434. things.

1435. And we gather weekly on

1436. a Sunday to be reminded

  1437. who Jesus is.

1438. To be reminded how much

1439. we need him and to

  1440. worship him.

1441. To lift him up and to

1442. ascribe to him that you

1443. are God and that I am

  1444. not.

1445. You are worthy of my

  1446. entire life.

  1447. This is what Jesus

  1448. calls us to do.

  1449. But oh friends, can't

1450. you also see in the

  1451. story the gospel?

1452. Can't you see how God

1453. is revealing to us the

  1454. gospel here?

  1455. Because the gospel

1456. tells us that we too

  1457. cannot rescue ourselves

  1458. and cannot save

  1459. ourselves.

1460. The whole point of the

1461. Bible is to bring us to

1462. a place where we see

  1463. that we are desperately

  1464. in trouble.

1465. We are not just in the

  1466. storms of life.

  1467. The storms that we

1468. face are not just a bad

1469. day at the office or

  1470. COVID.

1471. We are in the storm of

  1472. God's judgment because of

  1473. our sin.

  1474. And we cannot save

  1475. ourselves.

  1476. It is utterly beyond

  1477. us.

1478. And so the point of the

1479. gospel is to reveal to

1480. us that we need a

  1481. savior.

1482. We need one who was

  1483. with the father,

  1484. communing, who left the

  1485. comfort of heaven to

1486. come down and to be with

  1487. us.

1488. To walk into the storm

  1489. that we were facing,

1490. into the very wrath of

1491. God and to take it upon

1492. himself on the cross so

1493. that we could be saved.

1494. And as we look upon that

1495. man, behold the man upon

1496. the cross, we see him for

  1497. who he is.

1498. We see that Jesus was not

1499. just a good man, not just

1500. a moral teacher, not just

1501. a sage who said wise

  1502. things.

1503. The point of the cross is

1504. to reveal to us who he is

1505. and how great need for him

1506. and then to lead us to

  1507. worship.

1508. Friends, at the heart of

  1509. the gospel is the

  1510. declaration we need him

1511. for this life and for

  1512. life to come.

1513. But at the heart of the

1514. gospel is that Jesus came

1515. to do that for us.

  1516. Remember Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

1517. chapter 2, as for you,

1518. you were dead in your

  1519. trespasses and sins in

1520. which you walked in the

  1521. following the prince of

1522. the power of the air,

1523. enslaved to the desires of

1524. the lusts of flesh and

  1525. under God's wrath and

  1526. judgment.

1527. But because of his great

1528. love for us, this God,

  1529. who loves us immensely

1530. and his great mercy has

1531. made us alive with Christ

  1532. Jesus.

1533. You are saved, you are

  1534. raised with Christ Jesus

1535. and he has made you

  1536. alive with Christ.

1537. This is by grace, not

  1538. through works.

1539. This is not of your own

  1540. doing.

1541. It is a gift of God so

1542. that no one can boast.

1543. This is what Jesus is

  1544. doing.

1545. He came to his disciples

  1546. in the storm.

1547. He comes to us in the

1548. storm so that we can see

1549. he is the one true God

  1550. and worship him.

  1551. Friends, what about you?

1552. Do you want to grow in

  1553. grace?

1554. Do you want to become the

  1555. mature disciple that Jesus

1556. is calling you to be?

1557. Maybe Jesus is leading you

1558. into the storms of life.

1559. Maybe he is leading you to

1560. a place that is utterly

  1561. beyond your control.

1562. In his kindness, he is

1563. bringing you to a place

1564. where you see your great

  1565. need for him.

1566. He wants to open your

1567. eyes so that you can see

1568. him, that you can cry out

  1569. to him.

  1570. That you, like the

  1571. disciples, can say,

  1572. Jesus, save me.

1573. And then you can worship

  1574. him.

  1575. Let's pray together.

1576. Lord Jesus Christ, we do

  1577. come before you this

  1578. morning and God, we

  1579. acknowledge that in your

  1580. kindness, God, you often

1581. lead us to places that are

  1582. not always comfortable.

1583. But because you want to

1584. save us from the delusion

1585. of thinking that we can

  1586. save ourselves.

1587. You want us to see you for

1588. who you are and to cry out

1589. to you and to be saved.

1590. Lord, we know that this is

1591. not only the way into the

1592. kingdom, this is also the

  1593. way of the kingdom.

1594. This is the Christian life.

1595. It's not only the way how

  1596. that we become Christians,

1597. it's how we deliver as

  1598. Christians, constantly

1599. dependent on you, aware of

1600. our need for you, no longer

  1601. trying to save ourselves.

1602. And so God, I pray for us

  1603. as a church.

1604. Lord, no doubt almost all of

1605. us here are facing storms of

  1606. various kinds.

1607. For some of us, we've lost a

  1608. loved one.

1609. For some of us, it's our

  1610. children.

1611. For some of us, it's our

  1612. parents.

1613. For some of us, it's at work.

1614. For some of us, it's the

  1615. longings of our hearts.

1616. God, for some of us, it's the

1617. words that people have spoken

  1618. over us.

1619. God, for some of us, it's

  1620. mental health challenges.

1621. For some of us, it's fear

  1622. about the future.

1623. God, every one of us are

  1624. facing the storms.

1625. Lord, help us to not try and

  1626. save ourselves.

1627. Help us to fall onto our

  1628. knees.

1629. open our eyes, we pray, and

1630. to call out to you, to

1631. worship you for who you

  1632. are.

1633. We pray this in your

  1634. wonderful and your

  1635. glorious name.

  1636. Amen.

1637. I want to ask if we can take

  1638. a few minutes.

1639. We should have a slide.

  1640. I think there's a next

  1641. slide, the response.

  1642. We should have two

  1643. questions.

1644. What is it that God is

1645. wanting to say to us

  1646. today?

  1647. I hope it's been relatively

  1648. clear.

1649. If not, we can start again.

1650. Should we go back to the

  1651. beginning?

1652. But secondly, what does it

1653. look like for us to

  1654. respond?

1655. You know, when God speaks to

1656. us, he's not just wanting to

  1657. fill our mind with

  1658. information.

1659. He speaks so that we will

  1660. respond to him.

  1661. It's like when you have a

  1662. conversation with someone,

1663. when someone talks, we don't

  1664. just say, okay, that's

  1665. interesting.

  1666. In order to build

  1667. relationship, we respond.

1668. What does it look like to

1669. respond to God this morning?

  1670. Let's take a few minutes and

  1671. reflect on that.

1672. And then Cynthia will lead us

1673. in a song of worship.
