  1. It's wonderful to be here this morning on this beautiful, hot, and humid Sunday.

  2. As one of the interns, I'm so grateful for opportunities to serve and to preach.

  3. It really is a privilege to preach here this morning, to preach God's Word.

  4. I recently heard John Piper remark that preaching is not just an explanation of biblical texts,

  5. but a celebration of biblical realities.

  6. And in this Knowing God series, we're attempting to magnify the biblical realities of God's attributes.

  7. Knowing God involves knowing what makes Him who He is.

  8. And this is important because in essence, or the essence of the Christian life,

  9. is to live for God's glory by knowing Him, by treasuring Him,

  10. and by pointing people to the risen Messiah.

  11. So with that, let's just open in prayer.

  12. Our dear, gracious, and heavenly Father,

  13. Father, we just thank you, Lord, that in you there is strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.

  14. We pray, Lord, that as we study and see what your Word says about your attributes,

  15. that our minds and our hearts would be shaped, our attitudes and actions,

  16. that we may be a people who would live for your glory.

  17. Pour out your Spirit among us.

  18. We thank you, Lord, for your presence here.

  19. We pray and ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  20. In our world today, God is described in various ways.

  21. In one religion, there are infinite manifestations of gods and goddesses

  22. who become incarnate with idols, temples, rivers, and animals, and so forth.

  23. Many have the belief of a superior and transcendent God

  24. who is a strict judge and who will be merciful to followers

  25. who have done more good deeds than bad deeds.

  26. Another popular view promotes the idea that true divinity exists within us,

  27. that we ourselves are gods.

  28. New Testament scholar D.A. Carson observes that

  29. just because somebody uses the word God

  30. and then somebody else uses the word God,

  31. it does not follow that they mean the same thing.

  32. In this Knowing God series,

  33. we have been speaking about the triune God of the Bible,

  34. the one true God who is creator and sustainer of everything and everyone.

  35. We've been looking at some of God's essential characteristics

  36. that make him who he is.

  37. Two weeks ago, Reverend George preached on

  38. how the one true God exists in a loving unity of three persons,

  39. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  40. Last week, you remember, Reverend Daniel showed us from Scripture

  41. how God is sovereign,

  42. how he is all-knowing and all-powerful.

  43. And this morning, we're going to look at

  44. God's unchanging and eternal characteristics.

  45. Our theme this morning is

  46. God is unchanging and eternal.

  47. So our faith and hope rests on a solid foundation.

  48. God is unchanging and eternal.

  49. So our faith and hope rests on a solid foundation.

  50. And we're going to look at two passages in Scripture

  51. which features God's unchanging and eternal characteristics.

  52. The first is found, as we read earlier,

  53. in Malachi 3, verse 6,

    Malachi 3:6

  54. where it describes God is unchanging in his character.

  55. We'll just read that again.

  56. Malachi 3, verse 6,

    Malachi 3:6

  57. For I, the Lord, do not change.

  58. Therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

  59. Malachi's ministry took place during a time of spiritual decline

  60. among the people of Israel.

  61. The temple had finally been rebuilt

  62. thanks to the urging of the prophets Zechariah and Haggai.

  63. But the promises of the coming Messiah

  64. and God's blessings had yet to come.

  65. And this resulted, as you can imagine,

  66. in Israel's spiritual drift

  67. to half-hearted worship and unfaithfulness.

  68. But in loving response,

  69. God calls his people back

  70. to renewed covenant commitment and faithfulness.

  71. Now this phrase,

  72. I, the Lord, do not change,

  73. specifically relates

  74. to God's unchanging character.

  75. In contrast to Israel's unfaithfulness,

  76. Malachi points us to God's faithfulness

  77. in his unchanging character.

  78. So it's on the basis of God's unchangeableness

  79. that his people, the children of Jacob,

  80. are not consumed.

  81. God's unchangeableness,

  82. another way to put it,

  83. is his immutability,

  84. is a theme all throughout Scripture.

  85. In the book of Exodus,

  86. God announced himself to Moses

  87. as,

  88. I am who I am.

  89. In other words,

  90. I am the one who always is,

  91. unchanging in mercy,

  92. grace, and faithfulness,

  93. unchanging in justice,

  94. keeping steadfast love for thousands,

  95. forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  96. who by no means clear the guilty.

  97. Exodus 34, 6-7.

  98. In the book of James,

  99. God is celebrated

  100. as a faithful giver of good gifts

  101. from whom there is no variation

  102. or shadow of turning.

  103. As God was in the beginning,

  104. he is now and ever shall be.

  105. God cannot be anything other than who he is.

  106. And if you know God

  107. being united to Christ by faith,

  108. you can rejoice

  109. knowing that his unchanging character

  110. provides you a sure foundation

  111. for your faith.

  112. To name just a few.

  113. Number one,

  114. God is unchanging in his love.

  115. God is love.

  116. And from the beginning

  117. has existed a Trinitarian love

  118. between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  119. Love is central to who he is.

  120. And creation is an outpouring

  121. of his divine love.

  122. And in love,

  123. the triune God created you

  124. and I in his image

  125. to be in relationship with him.

  126. In the fall,

  127. our relationship was broken.

  128. But through God's gracious work in Christ,

  129. He redeemed us to restore us

  130. that we may love him supremely

  131. and love others.

  132. And because God is unchanging in his love,

  133. you have a sure foundation

  134. for your faith.

  135. God is unchanging in his power.

  136. God is all-powerful

  137. and by the power of his word,

  138. he created the heavens and the earth.

  139. Indeed, the heavens declare the glory of God.

  140. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.

  141. The same God who created the universe

  142. is the same God who sustains you

  143. by the power of his spirit,

  144. by grace,

  145. whether in good times or bad times.

  146. He sustains us by his power

  147. in sickness and in suffering,

  148. whether physical or mental.

  149. Can you recall

  150. all the times that God

  151. has sustained you?

  152. Because God is unchanging in his power.

  153. You have a sure foundation for your faith.

  154. God is unchanging in his justice.

  155. If there is a God,

  156. many people ask,

  157. I ask this all the time,

  158. and we touched on this last week,

  159. if there is a God,

  160. how can he allow so much evil,

  161. suffering,

  162. and injustices in the world?

  163. That's a question

  164. with a lot of weight.

  165. But hear what the Apostle Peter

  166. has to say.

  167. He reminds us that

  168. with the Lord,

  169. one day is a thousand years,

  170. and a thousand years

  171. as one day.

  172. The Lord is not slow

  173. to fulfill his promises

  174. as some count slowness,

  175. but is patient towards you,

  176. not wishing any should perish,

  177. but all to come

  178. to repentance.

  179. And though God's justice

  180. has yet to fully come,

  181. there will come a time

  182. when God will judge

  183. the world in righteousness.

  184. And until then,

  185. the Lord extends his mercy

  186. to those who are lost

  187. and broken.

  188. God is unchanging

  189. in his justice,

  190. and at the same time,

  191. he's unchanging

  192. in his mercy.

  193. The Lord is good,

  194. and his mercy

  195. endures forever.

  196. And God's enduring mercy

  197. was made visible

  198. at the cross.

  199. At the cross,

  200. Jesus satisfied

  201. God's justice

  202. justice

  203. by paying the full penalty

  204. of our sin,

  205. making mercy possible

  206. for you and I.

  207. And if you're here this morning

  208. and you don't know Jesus,

  209. God's mercy

  210. and forgiveness of sin

  211. is extended to you

  212. this morning.

  213. Dear friend,

  214. whoever you are,

  215. trust in Christ,

  216. for he is your only hope

  217. both in life

  218. and death.

  219. And what's so amazing

  220. and wonderful

  221. is that when you put

  222. your faith and trust

  223. in Jesus,

  224. you have the privilege

  225. of being in a personal

  226. relationship with God.

  227. And in this relationship,

  228. you discover,

  229. you discover that his mercies

  230. are new every morning.

  231. They never come to an end.

  232. And with confidence,

  233. you can come boldly

  234. before the throne of grace

  235. and receive mercy

  236. and find grace

  237. to help in time of need.

  238. And because God

  239. is unchanging

  240. in his justice

  241. and mercy,

  242. once again,

  243. you have a sure

  244. and solid foundation

  245. for your faith.

  246. God is unchanging

  247. in his character.

  248. We've only just begun.

  249. Secondly,

  250. God is eternal.

  251. God is eternal.

  252. Please turn with me

  253. to Psalm 90,

    Psalms 90:1–2

  254. verses 1 to 2.

  255. It reads,

  256. Lord,

  257. you have been

  258. our dwelling place

  259. in all generations.

  260. Before the mountains

  261. were brought forth,

  262. wherever you have formed

  263. the earth and the world,

  264. from everlasting

  265. to everlasting,

  266. you are God.

  267. Notice,

  268. in verse 1,

  269. the psalmist declares

  270. that the Lord

  271. is a dwelling place.

  272. In other words,

  273. he's a home,

  274. he's a refuge

  275. for his people

  276. in all generations.

  277. God is a home

  278. and refuge

  279. for his people.

  280. Why?

  281. Because he's

  282. from everlasting

  283. to everlasting.

  284. He's eternal.

  285. God has

  286. no beginning

  287. or end.

  288. And God's eternity

  289. answers that age-old question,

  290. if everything

  291. has a cause,

  292. then what caused God?

  293. Well,

  294. nothing caused God.

  295. God doesn't need a cause.

  296. As one commentator put it,

  297. there's nothing

  298. that stands over God

  299. or outside of him

  300. to cause him

  301. to come into being.

  302. God is totally

  303. independent in himself

  304. and he causes

  305. all things

  306. to depend on him

  307. for their existence.

  308. Again,

  309. Psalm 90,

    Psalms 90:2

  310. verse 2 reads,

  311. Before the mountains

  312. were brought forth,

  313. wherever you had formed

  314. the earth and the world

  315. from everlasting

  316. to everlasting,

  317. you are God.

  318. Now,

  319. I was saying

  320. in the 8 a.m. service,

  321. you can't truly experience

  322. the beauty of Alberta

  323. without visiting

  324. the Rocky Mountains.

  325. Now,

  326. I confess

  327. that having grown up

  328. in Alberta,

  329. being so close

  330. to the Rockies,

  331. pretty much right

  332. in our backyard,

  333. I took all of God's

  334. good creation

  335. for granted.

  336. But now that we've been

  337. away for several years,

  338. I've really come

  339. to miss the Rockies.

  340. And those of you

  341. who have been there

  342. will know what I'm

  343. talking about.

  344. The beauty is breathtaking

  345. as you can see

  346. in this picture.

  347. Now,

  348. take a few moments

  349. and imagine

  350. you're in the Rockies.

  351. You might be sitting

  352. on that log there.

  353. You see the soaring peaks,

  354. the towering mountains

  355. amid the vast blue skies.

  356. Now,

  357. just pause for a moment

  358. and consider

  359. the incomprehensible

  360. greatness

  361. of the eternal God

  362. who created them.

  363. That before the mountains

  364. were brought forth,

  365. before God

  366. ever formed

  367. the earth

  368. and the world,

  369. God was

  370. and always existed.

  371. And in contrast

  372. to God's eternity,

  373. human life

  374. is so brief.

  375. And I don't think

  376. there has been

  377. a day

  378. that has gone by

  379. where we're not

  380. reminded

  381. of the brevity

  382. of life.

  383. Psalm 39.4

  384. says,

  385. Show me,

  386. O Lord,

  387. my life's end

  388. and the number

  389. of my days.

  390. Let me know

  391. how fleeting

  392. is my life.

  393. Psalm 102.11

  394. My days are like

  395. an evening shadow.

  396. I wither away

  397. like grass.

  398. James 4.14

  399. reminds us

  400. that life

  401. is like a vapor,

  402. a mist

  403. that appears

  404. for a little time

  405. and then vanishes.

  406. On this side

  407. of eternity,

  408. our days

  409. are number

  410. from the moment

  411. we take

  412. our first breath.

  413. But the number

  414. of God's years

  415. are unsearchable,

  416. Job tells us

  417. in chapter 36.26.

  418. Humans are finite

  419. and limited,

  420. living in fleeting time,

  421. but God is eternal,

  422. not bound by time,

  423. though He works

  424. within time.

  425. In the words

  426. of J.I. Packer,

  427. what God does

  428. in time,

  429. He planned

  430. from eternity

  431. and all

  432. that He planned

  433. from eternity,

  434. He carries

  435. out in time.

  436. God

  437. is eternal

  438. and there is

  439. no limits

  440. to His greatness.

  441. God stands

  442. over and above

  443. His creation.

  444. So,

  445. as we have said

  446. in the past weeks,

  447. it is beyond

  448. our ability

  449. to fully describe

  450. or comprehend God.

  451. We've only scratched

  452. the surface.

  453. But the good news

  454. is

  455. that

  456. God can be

  457. truly known

  458. personally.

  459. Did you know

  460. that God

  461. is personal?

  462. God

  463. is personal

  464. and it is

  465. in the person

  466. of Jesus Christ

  467. that He is

  468. most fully known.

  469. when the fullness

  470. of time

  471. had come,

  472. God

  473. sent forth

  474. His Son.

  475. Jesus,

  476. the eternal God,

  477. became flesh

  478. and dwelt

  479. among us.

  480. He lived

  481. the life

  482. that you and I

  483. should have lived.

  484. He died

  485. the death

  486. that we deserved

  487. and was raised

  488. on the third day

  489. so He can rescue us,

  490. free us

  491. from the grip

  492. of sin

  493. and give us

  494. a new heart

  495. and grant us

  496. eternal life.

  497. He made a way

  498. for us

  499. to know God

  500. and to enjoy

  501. Him forever.

  502. No longer

  503. under the grip

  504. of sin

  505. but now gripped

  506. by God's

  507. eternal love

  508. and amazing grace.

  509. That's why we sing

  510. with John Newton,

  511. I was once lost

  512. but now I'm found.

  513. Was blind

  514. but now I see.

  515. Dear friends,

  516. to trust in Jesus

  517. for eternal life

  518. is to trust

  519. in the unchanging

  520. eternal God

  521. who is the same

  522. yesterday

  523. and today

  524. and forever.

  525. To trust

  526. in Jesus

  527. is to trust

  528. in the one

  529. who declared

  530. before Abraham

  531. was,

  532. I am.

  533. To trust

  534. in Jesus

  535. is to trust

  536. in the Alpha

  537. and the Omega

  538. who was

  539. and who is

  540. and who is

  541. to come,

  542. the Almighty.

  543. The first

  544. and the last.

  545. The beginning

  546. and the end.

  547. Jesus

  548. is from everlasting

  549. to everlasting.

  550. And some of you

  551. might be going

  552. through a difficult

  553. season

  554. in your life

  555. and if this is you

  556. this morning,

  557. I want to encourage

  558. you to talk

  559. to somebody.

  560. Speak with

  561. Reverend George

  562. or Daniel

  563. or one of the

  564. church leaders

  565. or a trusted

  566. Christian

  567. or mature

  568. friend

  569. who can support

  570. you and pray

  571. for you.

  572. And even if

  573. you're not going

  574. through hardships

  575. now,

  576. trust me,

  577. be assured

  578. they will come.

  579. And we may

  580. not always

  581. know

  582. why we go

  583. through what

  584. we go through.

  585. But my point

  586. is this,

  587. that no matter

  588. what you face,

  589. always remember

  590. and never forget

  591. that Jesus,

  592. the eternal

  593. God

  594. in the flesh,

  595. Emmanuel,

  596. God with us,

  597. promises to be

  598. with you

  599. always,

  600. even to the

  601. end of the

  602. age.

  603. Jesus is

  604. eternally

  605. trustworthy

  606. and when you

  607. trust in him

  608. you can know

  609. peace and

  610. rest and

  611. comfort no

  612. matter what

  613. you may be

  614. facing.

  615. And as you

  616. trust in him

  617. you can be

  618. sure that

  619. God will

  620. accomplish

  621. his purposes

  622. in your life.

  623. Your faith

  624. and hope

  625. does not

  626. rest on

  627. sinking sand.

  628. but it

  629. rests on

  630. a sure

  631. and solid

  632. foundation.

  633. So

  634. where does

  635. this leave

  636. us?

  637. What is the

  638. appropriate

  639. response

  640. to a God

  641. who is

  642. unchanging

  643. in his

  644. character

  645. and eternal?

  646. Well first,

  647. knowing God's

  648. character

  649. calls us

  650. to worship.

  651. worship.

  652. Are we

  653. half-hearted

  654. and lukewarm

  655. in our

  656. worship to

  657. God?

  658. Do we

  659. live our

  660. lives in

  661. such a way

  662. that magnifies

  663. Jesus?

  664. I want to

  665. invite you

  666. to take

  667. some time

  668. to contemplate

  669. God's

  670. unchanging

  671. character

  672. and internal

  673. nature

  674. and let us

  675. come before

  676. the throne

  677. of grace

  678. and ask

  679. God to

  680. revive our

  681. hearts with

  682. a renewed

  683. sense of

  684. awe and

  685. wonder

  686. that we

  687. may treasure

  688. him above

  689. all else

  690. that the

  691. triune God

  692. would be

  693. the only

  694. object of

  695. our worship

  696. that whatever

  697. we do we

  698. would do it

  699. all to the

  700. glory of

  701. God.

  702. And secondly

  703. and lastly

  704. knowing God's

  705. character

  706. calls us

  707. to recognize

  708. our daily

  709. need of

  710. him.

  711. In the

  712. words of

  713. Alec

  714. Moyder

  715. do we

  716. live our

  717. lives in

  718. such a

  719. way

  720. that keeps

  721. God for

  722. Sunday

  723. but looks

  724. on Monday

  725. to Saturday

  726. as ours?

  727. We may

  728. not

  729. consciously

  730. think that

  731. way

  732. but our

  733. words

  734. and our

  735. actions

  736. may reveal

  737. otherwise.

  738. See the

  739. Lord wants

  740. us to

  741. depend on

  742. him for

  743. everything

  744. and if

  745. you haven't

  746. started one

  747. I want to

  748. encourage

  749. you to

  750. find a

  751. good Bible

  752. reading plan.

  753. If any

  754. of you are

  755. interested I

  756. have some

  757. with me

  758. today you

  759. can come

  760. and see

  761. me after

  762. the service

  763. and as

  764. you read

  765. through the

  766. Bible

  767. take

  768. special note

  769. of God's

  770. characteristics

  771. and attributes

  772. because the

  773. more we

  774. know God

  775. the more

  776. we truly

  777. understand our

  778. need of

  779. him every

  780. hour

  781. the more

  782. we know

  783. God's

  784. attributes

  785. the more

  786. our faith

  787. deepens

  788. to whom

  789. else

  790. shall we

  791. go to

  792. than to

  793. the one

  794. who has

  795. the words

  796. of eternal

  797. life

  798. to whom

  799. else can

  800. we daily

  801. depend on

  802. than a

  803. God who

  804. is unchanging

  805. and is a

  806. character

  807. and eternal

  808. can we

  809. find a

  810. friend

  811. so faithful

  812. who will

  813. all our

  814. sorrows

  815. share

  816. and as

  817. we reflect

  818. on God's

  819. character

  820. in this

  821. knowing

  822. God series

  823. may we

  824. respond

  825. with the

  826. words

  827. of that

  828. timeless

  829. hymn

  830. I need

  831. thee

  832. every

  833. hour

  834. most

  835. gracious

  836. Lord

  837. no

  838. tender

  839. voice

  840. like

  841. thine

  842. can

  843. peace

  844. afford

  845. I

  846. need

  847. thee

  848. oh

  849. I

  850. need

  851. thee

  852. every

  853. hour

  854. I

  855. need

  856. thee

  857. oh

  858. bless

  859. me

  860. now

  861. my

  862. savior

  863. I

  864. come

  865. to

  866. thee

  867. God

  868. is

  869. unchanging

  870. and

  871. eternal

  872. so our

  873. faith and

  874. hope

  875. rests

  876. on a

  877. solid

  878. foundation

  879. dear

  880. gracious

  881. and

  882. heavenly

  883. father

  884. um

  885. how

  886. Lord

  887. we

  888. we

  889. again

  890. thank you

  891. for

  892. who you

  893. are

  894. and

  895. your

  896. unchangeableness

  897. your

  898. your

  899. eternity

  900. we

  901. pray that

  902. you would

  903. help us

  904. to reflect

  905. and to

  906. meditate

  907. on it

  908. and that

  909. we would

  910. be a

  911. people who

  912. would

  913. live to

  914. your

  915. glory

  916. that we

  917. would

  918. point

  919. others

  920. to

  921. Jesus

  922. father

  923. I

  924. just

  925. pray

  926. that

  927. you

  928. would

  929. be

  930. with

  931. those

  932. today

  933. who

  934. are

  935. going

  936. through

  937. a

  938. difficult

  939. season

  940. may

  941. they

  942. recall

  943. and

  944. remember

  945. your

  946. unchangeableness

  947. of who

  948. you are

  949. and may

  950. it comfort

  951. and strengthen

  952. them

  953. father

  954. we give

  955. you thanks

  956. again

  957. and we

  958. ask all

  959. of these

  960. things

  961. in Jesus

  962. name

  963. amen
