  1. Let's hear God's word together.

  2. But mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days.

  3. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient

  4. to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control,

  5. brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather

  6. than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power, have nothing to do with

  7. such people.

  8. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women who are

  9. loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but

  10. never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  11. Just as Janes and Jambres oppose Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth.

  12. They are men of depraved minds who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.

  13. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be

  14. clear to everyone.

  15. You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience,

  16. love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings.

  17. What kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra?

  18. The persecutions I endured, yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.

  19. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while

  20. evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  21. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know

  22. those from whom you learned it.

  23. And how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise

  24. for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  25. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training

  26. in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good

  27. work.

  28. Amen.

  29. Let's once again take some time to pray together.

  30. Let's pray.

  31. Father God, as we read that sobering account of life in the last days, we would begin our

  32. time of prayer confessing our sin before you, acknowledging that we have sinned against you

  33. in thought, in word, and in action, in the things that we have done and in the things we have

  34. left undone.

  35. Lord, we have not loved you with our whole heart.

  36. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.

  37. Lord, as we stand under your word, under your law, we would confess and we would repent.

  38. And we would ask that for the sake of your son Jesus, you would have mercy on us.

  39. Lord, we thank you for the promise, for the assurance that if we confess our sins, you are faithful

  40. and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  41. Lord, we pray for ourselves as a church and we pray for our wider community today.

  42. Lord, we pray for anybody here who feels a sense of loneliness, perhaps far from home, far from family

  43. and friends, those who are feeling a sense of isolation, perhaps because of the struggles of life.

  44. Lord, we thank you for that promise that in Jesus we have a friend who sticks closer than any brother,

  45. that we have the promise from Jesus, that he will never leave or forsake any of his people,

  46. that wherever we are we go with your spirit if we belong to you.

  47. And so we pray for comfort and encouragement and strength that comes from yourself.

  48. We also pray that this church would be a place of real community and family for many people,

  49. whether they're from Scotland or for people all around the world.

  50. Lord, we pray for any here today who have particular burdens that they are carrying, anxieties for themselves or for others,

  51. stress because of any number of factors.

  52. Lord, we thank you again for Jesus, the one who invites us to lay our burdens down,

  53. to find rest from him and to find rest in him.

  54. Lord, we thank you for the gift of prayer,

  55. that when we find ourselves anxious and perplexed and confused,

  56. and sorrowing,

  57. that we can turn our eyes to the God who made the heavens and the earth,

  58. the God who is higher than us,

  59. the God who promises to be a rock,

  60. a source of strength and refuge.

  61. And so we pray that for any who are particularly anxious,

  62. that they would know to turn to you,

  63. and that they would find comfort and strength from you,

  64. this day and this week.

  65. Lord, we pray for those who are suffering because of ill health.

  66. We think of those who are undergoing treatments of various kinds,

  67. for those who are awaiting results of tests and surgeries.

  68. Lord, again, in those moments of fear and those doubts and questions come,

  69. Lord, may your spirit come and draw near and give hope and give peace.

  70. Lord, that sometimes the waves seem to break over and over.

  71. We thank you that Jesus is the one who could speak to the storm and say,

  72. be still.

  73. Lord, we pray that you would quiet stormy hearts today because of your great grace and your goodness.

  74. Lord, we pray today for those who are here who may be searching to find you as the one true God.

  75. We pray that as we spend time together reading the Bible and thinking about it,

  76. as we pray, as we sing,

  77. Lord, that you would be revealing yourself,

  78. you'd be revealing Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life,

  79. that you would be pleasing to draw people to faith and to know you as their God.

  80. We pray for your people as we seek to live for you in the world,

  81. as you call us to be salt and light.

  82. We thank you that you know each one of us.

  83. You know where we spend our time.

  84. You know the people that we spend time with.

  85. You know the opportunities that we have to speak about Jesus.

  86. You know the challenges we have to live for Jesus.

  87. And so we pray for each one of your people that we would be depending on you as our Father,

  88. that we would be looking to Jesus our Savior,

  89. that we'd be finding strength that comes from the Holy Spirit within us,

  90. so that we might bear witness to the hope that we have,

  91. and that you might be pleased to bring into our lives those who need that hope,

  92. those who need living truth,

  93. and that you might work salvation in their hearts also.

  94. Lord, we pray as we have thought from your word about the importance of your word,

  95. and we pray for your word as it goes into the world today,

  96. as people will be preaching it in churches all around the world,

  97. as people will be speaking truth together around the world,

  98. and may you cause faith to be strengthened,

  99. and may you cause faith to come to life all around this world.

  100. And what we pray for our world, we pray for our country.

  101. Lord, will you strengthen your church and your people?

  102. Will you renew and revive?

  103. And Lord, as we realize how important your word is,

  104. we pray for the work of a Bible translation,

  105. and we thank you for those who use their gifts

  106. to help to translate the Bible into different languages,

  107. so people can hear good news for themselves.

  108. And we thank you for the work of Bible societies all around the world,

  109. as they look to make the Bible available

  110. to people who long to read it,

  111. who need to read it.

  112. And so Lord, we pray that your word,

  113. which is living and active,

  114. would be living and active around the world today,

  115. and it be living and active in our hearts today,

  116. that you would speak,

  117. and that we would listen,

  118. and that we would be changed.

  119. We pray in Jesus' name.

  120. Amen.

  121. Now we're going to sing a section of Psalm 119 together,

  122. sometimes described as the great love song to the Bible

  123. that we have in the Bible.

  124. We're going to sing the section from Psalm,

  125. from verse 105.

  126. And again, as we're able,

  127. let's stand together so we can sing.

  128. Your word's a lamp that shines before my feet.

  129. It is a light that guides me on my way.

  130. The oath that I have taken,

  131. I've confirmed,

  132. that all your righteous laws I will obey.

  133. Oh, Lord, you know that I have suffered much.

  134. Preserve my life according to your words.

  135. Accept the willing praises of my mouth.

  136. Instruct me in your righteous laws, O Lord.

  137. I will not disregard your holy law,

  138. though constantly my life is in my hands.

  139. Although the wicked set a snare for me,

  140. I have not left the path of your commands.

  141. Your statutes are my heritage always,

  142. grace.

  143. And every day they make my heart rejoice.

  144. My heart is set on keeping your decrees.

  145. And to the very end they are my choice.

  146. Now, can you turn with me to Luke's gospel

  147. and chapter 10.

  148. Again, if you're using your church Bibles,

  149. you'll find on page 1042.

  150. And we're going to read this short section

  151. at the end of chapter 10,

  152. where Jesus enters the home of Martha and Mary.

  153. And we'll think together about listening

  154. to God's words.

  155. So let's hear God's word.

  156. As Jesus and his disciples were on their way,

  157. he came to a village where a woman named Martha

  158. opened her home to him.

  159. She had a sister called Mary,

  160. who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.

  161. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations

  162. that had to be made.

  163. She came to him and asked,

  164. Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me

  165. to do the work by myself?

  166. Tell her to help me.

  167. Martha, Martha, the Lord answered,

  168. you are worried and upset about many things,

  169. but a few things are needed,

  170. or indeed only one.

  171. Mary has chosen what is better,

  172. and it will not be taken away from her.

  173. Amen.

  174. So there's a wonderful little section here,

  175. which we'll get to.

  176. But before we get to it,

  177. I want to talk just for a couple of minutes

  178. about a chap by the name of Carl Newport.

  179. Now, some of you maybe have heard of him.

  180. He writes and speaks about deep working

  181. and about digital minimalism.

  182. So this is a key guy for thinking about deep working,

  183. thinking about making space

  184. to have uninterrupted time to read,

  185. to think, to research, to write.

  186. He examined his own life,

  187. probably recognizes the challenges

  188. that belong to many of us,

  189. the challenge of disruptive and distracting social media,

  190. the problem of constant interruptions,

  191. because of technology,

  192. and also the pull of shallow work,

  193. those other tasks that are not the main tasks

  194. that can pull us away from deep working,

  195. deep thinking.

  196. And so the answer for Carl Newport

  197. was to begin to practice digital minimalism,

  198. to maximize focus by minimizing the time spent

  199. with technology and on social media.

  200. And he writes and speaks about that process

  201. of retraining one's brain

  202. to be able to focus deeply

  203. on whatever is being read and researched.

  204. Now, why talk about this?

  205. Well, we talk about it

  206. because probably it's an experience

  207. many of us recognize.

  208. But there is something in this

  209. for us as disciples,

  210. as followers of Jesus too.

  211. As we get into this text,

  212. we understand that Mary and Martha

  213. and we too are being called to deep listening,

  214. to be devoted to Jesus' words.

  215. That in this text,

  216. we find the challenge of distractions,

  217. that even good things in our lives

  218. can take us away from Jesus' words.

  219. And we hear the call from Jesus himself

  220. to refocus,

  221. to choose the one necessary thing,

  222. to sit at Jesus' feet.

  223. So we're going to see that today.

  224. Again, before we get into the text directly,

  225. there's something we need to recognize

  226. that Luke has done in his gospel.

  227. He's pulled this meeting with Mary and Martha

  228. out of its expected sequence.

  229. So Mary and Martha live in a place called Bethany.

  230. We know Jesus is on a journey to Jerusalem,

  231. but by this stage in Luke 10,

  232. he hasn't actually reached Bethany yet.

  233. So what Luke is doing

  234. is he's taking a later story

  235. and he's pulling it back in time

  236. to place it here.

  237. And so we need to ask ourselves,

  238. why is he placing it here?

  239. I want to give us two suggestions

  240. and we'll come back to these.

  241. One suggestion.

  242. So last week, if you remember,

  243. Jesus has a discussion

  244. about keeping the two great commandments

  245. about love for God

  246. and love for our neighbor.

  247. And last week,

  248. we thought about the Good Samaritan.

  249. What does it look like to love our neighbor?

  250. It looks like showing mercy,

  251. being sacrificial,

  252. with our time,

  253. with our energy,

  254. with our resources.

  255. This week,

  256. and next time we come back

  257. to Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  258. the focus is going to be,

  259. how do we grow in our love for God?

  260. The focus this week,

  261. listening to the words of God,

  262. listening to the words of Jesus.

  263. Next week,

  264. next time,

  265. it's going to be about prayer.

  266. So there's a nice balance here

  267. that's created.

  268. There's balance for the follower of Jesus.

  269. Last week,

  270. good works,

  271. activity,

  272. caring for God's world.

  273. This week,

  274. good listening,

  275. and reflection,

  276. and spending time in God's word.

  277. And as followers of Jesus,

  278. we need both.

  279. And we need that balance.

  280. But our focus,

  281. this time,

  282. is going to be on listening to God's word.

  283. And there's three portraits

  284. that we have here in this chapter,

  285. in this little section,

  286. that will help us to see

  287. that since Jesus is Lord,

  288. we must listen to him.

  289. Okay,

  290. first portrait

  291. is that of a stressed out servant.

  292. Let's look at Martha

  293. for a few moments.

  294. Verse 38,

  295. As Jesus and his disciples

  296. were on their way,

  297. he came to a village

  298. where a woman named Martha

  299. opened her home to him.

  300. Okay,

  301. so,

  302. Martha,

  303. we're being presented

  304. to someone who is

  305. most likely the elder sister

  306. in this family.

  307. She's being presented

  308. as the hostess.

  309. And she's being presented

  310. positively,

  311. because what does she do?

  312. She welcomes Jesus in.

  313. When Jesus sent out

  314. his 72 disciples,

  315. he spoke about the importance

  316. of welcoming Jesus

  317. and his people in.

  318. She is a follower.

  319. She's enjoying the peace of God.

  320. She receives him well.

  321. But it doesn't take long

  322. before stress begins to develop.

  323. Verse 40,

  324. Martha was distracted

  325. by all the preparations

  326. that had to be made.

  327. Here is a picture of someone

  328. who has become crazy busy,

  329. looking to do a good thing,

  330. to show hospitality to Jesus,

  331. to serve Jesus a nice meal.

  332. She has now become distracted.

  333. She is over busy.

  334. She's going round in circles.

  335. And with that

  336. comes frustration.

  337. She came to Jesus

  338. and asked,

  339. Lord,

  340. don't you care

  341. that my sister's left me

  342. to do the work by myself?

  343. She's frustrated with Jesus.

  344. She's judging her sister.

  345. Maybe just sitting there

  346. doing nothing

  347. while I'm busy

  348. getting the meal ready.

  349. And her solution,

  350. get Mary to come help me

  351. in the kitchen.

  352. Now,

  353. how does Jesus respond

  354. to Martha?

  355. Notice,

  356. first of all,

  357. that he responds

  358. tenderly

  359. and kindly.

  360. Martha,

  361. Martha,

  362. the Lord answered.

  363. You're worried

  364. and upset

  365. about many things.

  366. Martha,

  367. you're being disturbed

  368. and distracted.

  369. Why?

  370. Because you've lost focus.

  371. Few things are needed

  372. or indeed,

  373. only one.

  374. Jesus didn't come

  375. needing a fancy meal.

  376. Martha does need

  377. to listen to Jesus.

  378. And in all her busyness,

  379. she's lost that focus.

  380. So,

  381. Jesus has been welcomed in,

  382. but at the same time,

  383. Martha is in danger

  384. in this moment

  385. of missing out

  386. on fellowship

  387. and friendship

  388. with her Lord

  389. and her King.

  390. And so,

  391. Jesus kindly,

  392. wisely

  393. says to her,

  394. Martha,

  395. it's time to put the pans down.

  396. It's time to put

  397. the to-do list away.

  398. It's time to come

  399. and listen

  400. and learn

  401. and to receive

  402. and to receive

  403. my love.

  404. Jesus speaks

  405. to Martha,

  406. this stressed out servant,

  407. and says,

  408. you know what?

  409. It's time for you

  410. in this moment

  411. to stop serving.

  412. Instead,

  413. it's time to be served.

  414. Receive grace

  415. from me

  416. and from my words.

  417. So,

  418. as we come into

  419. Luke's portrait gallery

  420. and as we examine

  421. Martha,

  422. as we stop

  423. and look at her life,

  424. do we see something

  425. of ourselves there?

  426. In our busyness,

  427. maybe we feel

  428. that we're chasing

  429. ourselves in circles,

  430. pulled away,

  431. distracted

  432. from the best thing,

  433. time with Jesus

  434. and his word,

  435. by the many things,

  436. by the many good things

  437. that we're doing.

  438. Perhaps it's easy

  439. to see ourselves here.

  440. Where do distractions

  441. come from?

  442. For Martha,

  443. it was cooking,

  444. it was hospitality,

  445. I was looking

  446. to serve Jesus there.

  447. Where do distractions

  448. come from for us?

  449. Maybe first and foremost,

  450. they come from our culture.

  451. People say we live

  452. in the age of distraction

  453. because of technology,

  454. because we're always connected,

  455. because we're surrounded

  456. by entertainment

  457. and by noise.

  458. Do we find that

  459. that distracts us

  460. from time

  461. spent with Jesus?

  462. Maybe it's because

  463. of career.

  464. Like Martha,

  465. she was a homemaker,

  466. she was a hostess,

  467. she took that

  468. really seriously,

  469. but that distracted her

  470. in that moment

  471. from the best thing,

  472. time with Jesus.

  473. Maybe that's the challenge

  474. for us,

  475. high pressure,

  476. long hours,

  477. the need to always

  478. be available

  479. where we find it

  480. hard to switch off.

  481. Maybe it's concerns.

  482. That word

  483. in verse 41

  484. that Jesus uses,

  485. you are worried

  486. and upset

  487. about many things.

  488. That word worried

  489. comes up again

  490. in chapter 12.

  491. The worries

  492. that can come.

  493. Chapter 12,

  494. verse 11.

  495. When you are brought

  496. before synagogues,

  497. rulers and authorities,

  498. do not worry

  499. about how you'll

  500. defend yourselves

  501. or what you'll say.

  502. So we can be concerned

  503. about spiritual opposition.

  504. or further on

  505. in the chapter,

  506. chapter 12,

  507. verse 22.

  508. Therefore I tell you,

  509. do not worry

  510. about your life,

  511. what you'll eat

  512. or about your body,

  513. what you'll wear.

  514. Our daily needs,

  515. what we need

  516. for each day,

  517. those concerns

  518. can distract us

  519. from our time

  520. with Jesus.

  521. Without care

  522. and protection,

  523. as Martha shows us,

  524. time with Jesus,

  525. time in God's word,

  526. can get swallowed up.

  527. And we can miss

  528. that wonderful truth

  529. of a quiet heart

  530. still before our God.

  531. How do we fight distraction

  532. so we can hear God's word?

  533. Let me make three suggestions

  534. for us.

  535. The first is about depending.

  536. Again, I suspect

  537. I'm not alone in this,

  538. recognizing that the temptation

  539. for busy Christians,

  540. if we have a lot

  541. on our plate,

  542. a lot of tasks

  543. to perform,

  544. the first thing

  545. that's likely

  546. to get dropped

  547. is either

  548. Bible reading

  549. or prayer

  550. or maybe both.

  551. We know what we're doing.

  552. God has resourced us

  553. so we work

  554. in our own strength

  555. and we're self-reliant.

  556. Maybe we need to learn

  557. from Martha

  558. that first,

  559. Jesus must serve us.

  560. In the word of God,

  561. we must receive grace

  562. from him

  563. if we are to serve well.

  564. We depend

  565. like children

  566. before our Father

  567. in heaven

  568. and so we are

  569. to come hungry

  570. knowing that

  571. Jesus promises

  572. to satisfy.

  573. How else

  574. to fight

  575. distraction?

  576. Let's think

  577. about

  578. dropping.

  579. First of all,

  580. dropping the pace

  581. of life

  582. so that we have

  583. time with God.

  584. Being crazy busy

  585. can almost seem

  586. like a badge of honour

  587. in our culture

  588. and society

  589. but it's not good

  590. for the people of God

  591. to live without margins,

  592. to live without time

  593. that we can give

  594. to unhurried time

  595. with our God

  596. and our Saviour.

  597. Maybe you've heard

  598. of John Wesley,

  599. famous preacher

  600. in the 18th century.

  601. He had a band

  602. of travelling preachers

  603. under his care

  604. and he gave them

  605. a wonderful piece

  606. of advice.

  607. He said to them,

  608. when you travel,

  609. travel with a slack rein.

  610. So they're riding horses,

  611. don't be going

  612. full pelt,

  613. slow down.

  614. Why did he tell them that?

  615. It was so that

  616. as they journeyed,

  617. they could be thinking

  618. about God's word of truth

  619. and they would have time

  620. to pray.

  621. In the 18th century,

  622. Wesley was thinking

  623. about how do we

  624. redeem our commute?

  625. How can we use

  626. our travelling time

  627. so that we can be fed

  628. by God's word

  629. so that we're not

  630. always hurried

  631. so that we can have

  632. a tranquil,

  633. peaceful heart?

  634. What will that look like

  635. for you and I today

  636. living in the 21st century

  637. to ride with slack reins

  638. so that we have time

  639. with God

  640. so that our hearts

  641. are not stirred up

  642. with so much noise?

  643. We need to drop

  644. the pace of life

  645. and we need to drop

  646. some of the noise

  647. out of our time,

  648. out of our lives

  649. so that we can hear

  650. the word of God.

  651. Maybe that will mean

  652. quite literally,

  653. I've been trying to do this

  654. this week,

  655. find it super helpful,

  656. if I'm reading my Bible

  657. in this room,

  658. I'm going to drop

  659. my phone and my laptop

  660. in that room over there.

  661. We need to think

  662. really carefully

  663. to make sure

  664. that we have

  665. undivided time

  666. with our God.

  667. Depending and dropping,

  668. if we want to fight

  669. distraction,

  670. we need to learn

  671. delighting as well.

  672. One and only time

  673. I tried scuba diving

  674. when we had family

  675. living in the Philippines

  676. was an absolute disaster.

  677. I discovered

  678. that I am freakishly buoyant.

  679. Everybody else

  680. was getting down

  681. to the bottom,

  682. no problemo.

  683. Even when they put weights

  684. on my wetsuit,

  685. I would still bubble

  686. up to the top.

  687. And so I found myself

  688. stuck paddling

  689. on the surface.

  690. I don't know why.

  691. But you know,

  692. that often describes

  693. my faith.

  694. And I wonder

  695. if that describes

  696. the faith of you

  697. as well.

  698. Where we find

  699. ourselves content

  700. with a little bit

  701. of paddling

  702. rather than really

  703. diving into

  704. the rich treasures

  705. that we have

  706. in God's Word.

  707. The world

  708. crowds in

  709. and disrupts.

  710. And we find

  711. that we're grabbing

  712. a minute

  713. or two minutes.

  714. We don't have

  715. quality time

  716. to really sink

  717. and settle

  718. into how wonderful

  719. God's Word is.

  720. We need to fight,

  721. discipline ourselves

  722. in order

  723. to find

  724. that delight

  725. of meeting

  726. with God

  727. in His Word.

  728. See,

  729. Martha had this

  730. amazing moment.

  731. Here is the

  732. King of the Universe

  733. sitting in her

  734. front room.

  735. Her teacher

  736. and her Lord

  737. who would share

  738. unhurried time

  739. with her

  740. and her family.

  741. this Savior

  742. who would speak

  743. words of love

  744. and truth

  745. and life

  746. into her heart

  747. and her mind

  748. but she almost

  749. missed it.

  750. Because she was

  751. caught up in

  752. preparing a fancy

  753. meal,

  754. caught up in the

  755. stress of serving.

  756. We also have

  757. an incredible

  758. privilege.

  759. Jesus meets

  760. with us today

  761. by His Spirit.

  762. God would speak

  763. to us today

  764. in His living

  765. Word of God.

  766. Jesus invites us

  767. into fellowship

  768. to be served

  769. by Him

  770. as we gather

  771. together

  772. in His presence.

  773. Let's not miss it.

  774. Let Jesus

  775. speak

  776. verse 41

  777. and verse 42

  778. directly

  779. to your heart

  780. today.

  781. James,

  782. James,

  783. you are worried

  784. and upset

  785. about many

  786. things,

  787. but few

  788. things are

  789. needed,

  790. or indeed

  791. only one.

  792. Don't miss it

  793. when Jesus

  794. offers us Himself.

  795. That's the first

  796. portrait.

  797. Second portrait

  798. is that of Mary.

  799. Here is a portrait

  800. of someone

  801. who is listening

  802. to the Lord.

  803. And as we look

  804. at this portrait

  805. that Luke draws

  806. of Mary,

  807. two details

  808. are in view.

  809. First of all,

  810. her posture.

  811. Look at verse 39.

  812. She had a sister

  813. called Mary

  814. who sat

  815. at the Lord's feet

  816. listening

  817. to what He said.

  818. This is restful.

  819. This is

  820. quiet trust.

  821. This is sitting

  822. to listen

  823. and to learn.

  824. But it's also

  825. radical.

  826. And we shouldn't

  827. miss this.

  828. Because in the

  829. first century,

  830. it would have

  831. been a shocking

  832. thing that the

  833. model disciple

  834. being presented

  835. to us

  836. is a woman.

  837. Notice this

  838. wonderful truth

  839. that Jesus

  840. rejects the

  841. sexism of the

  842. first century

  843. just as He

  844. would reject

  845. the 21st century

  846. abuse of

  847. power that we

  848. are hearing

  849. about all

  850. too often.

  851. We have the

  852. wonderful,

  853. gracious,

  854. welcoming

  855. Savior who

  856. invites anyone

  857. to come and

  858. listen.

  859. There is

  860. humility in

  861. this posture,

  862. isn't there?

  863. Sitting at

  864. Jesus' feet

  865. like a servant

  866. before her

  867. master and

  868. her king.

  869. There's a

  870. tension in

  871. her posture.

  872. She's listening

  873. in like a

  874. student before

  875. her teacher,

  876. her master.

  877. The Lord

  878. of the universe,

  879. the eternal

  880. Son of God,

  881. the Savior of

  882. the world,

  883. has rung

  884. their doorbell

  885. and Mary

  886. takes full

  887. advantage.

  888. And there's

  889. this wonderful

  890. gift.

  891. Here is the

  892. Savior on

  893. his journey

  894. to save

  895. her,

  896. to go to

  897. Jerusalem,

  898. to die for

  899. her,

  900. and he sits

  901. to talk with

  902. her.

  903. And she

  904. gives full

  905. attention.

  906. She's listening

  907. to the

  908. Lord.

  909. So there's

  910. her posture

  911. there,

  912. but also we

  913. need to

  914. recognize that

  915. Jesus draws

  916. attention to

  917. her priority

  918. also.

  919. To read

  920. again,

  921. verse 42,

  922. few things

  923. are needed,

  924. or indeed

  925. only one.

  926. Mary has

  927. chosen what

  928. is better,

  929. and it will

  930. not be taken

  931. away from

  932. her.

  933. That one

  934. thing necessary

  935. was not a

  936. fancy meal,

  937. it was not

  938. frantic activity,

  939. it was to

  940. sit at

  941. Jesus'

  942. feet and

  943. to learn

  944. from him.

  945. The better

  946. portion that

  947. Mary has

  948. chosen,

  949. quality time

  950. with the

  951. Lord Jesus,

  952. listening to

  953. his word.

  954. Now again,

  955. think about

  956. those two

  957. details.

  958. Think about

  959. her posture,

  960. think about

  961. her priority.

  962. How would

  963. our portrait

  964. look?

  965. Honestly,

  966. as we sit

  967. here today,

  968. and how does

  969. God want

  970. our portrait

  971. to look?

  972. Think about

  973. our posture.

  974. I know

  975. some of us,

  976. we know

  977. pain,

  978. regularly or

  979. occasionally,

  980. of a body

  981. that gets

  982. out of

  983. alignment.

  984. And the

  985. truth is that

  986. the same

  987. thing can

  988. happen

  989. spiritually.

  990. And we

  991. need the

  992. word of

  993. God to

  994. do that

  995. spiritual

  996. physio

  997. work to

  998. realign us

  999. so that

  1000. our posture

  1001. is right.

  1002. Think about

  1003. what the

  1004. Bible says

  1005. about itself.

  1006. So in

  1007. Psalm 119,

  1008. we read,

  1009. your word

  1010. is a lamp

  1011. to my feet.

  1012. Is

  1013. God's word

  1014. what directs

  1015. our lives,

  1016. what directs

  1017. our decisions,

  1018. our attitudes,

  1019. our actions?

  1020. God's word

  1021. is described

  1022. as sweeter

  1023. than honey.

  1024. It is

  1025. supposed to

  1026. give joy

  1027. and delight.

  1028. Do we

  1029. approach it

  1030. with that

  1031. sense of

  1032. joyful

  1033. expectation

  1034. and anticipation?

  1035. Jesus

  1036. said that

  1037. him and

  1038. his words

  1039. are like a

  1040. solid rock

  1041. foundation.

  1042. So when

  1043. the storms

  1044. of life

  1045. come,

  1046. when the

  1047. storm of

  1048. judgment

  1049. would come,

  1050. we would

  1051. stand firm.

  1052. Is

  1053. God's

  1054. word the

  1055. foundation

  1056. your life,

  1057. my life,

  1058. is built

  1059. on?

  1060. The Bible

  1061. describes

  1062. itself as

  1063. the sword

  1064. of the

  1065. spirit.

  1066. When we

  1067. face

  1068. spiritual

  1069. battle

  1070. and trial

  1071. and temptation,

  1072. do we

  1073. take it

  1074. up and

  1075. read it

  1076. and rely

  1077. upon it?

  1078. Do we

  1079. have a

  1080. posture of

  1081. humility

  1082. towards the

  1083. Bible?

  1084. Are we

  1085. ready to

  1086. submit to

  1087. it,

  1088. even when

  1089. it challenges

  1090. us,

  1091. even when

  1092. it exposes

  1093. sin in our

  1094. lives?

  1095. Do we

  1096. let it

  1097. judge us

  1098. rather than

  1099. us seeking

  1100. to stand

  1101. in judgment

  1102. over

  1103. God's

  1104. word?

  1105. Is it

  1106. our rule

  1107. for a

  1108. life of

  1109. godliness?

  1110. Do we

  1111. have that

  1112. posture of

  1113. attention

  1114. where we're

  1115. letting it

  1116. do its

  1117. work?

  1118. Remember

  1119. what Paul

  1120. wrote to

  1121. Timothy,

  1122. that God's

  1123. word teaches

  1124. and rebukes

  1125. and corrects

  1126. and trains

  1127. in righteousness.

  1128. Do we

  1129. allow God's

  1130. word to

  1131. do its

  1132. work?

  1133. Do we

  1134. do what

  1135. it says?

  1136. Are we

  1137. meditating

  1138. upon it

  1139. day and

  1140. night?

  1141. Are we

  1142. seeking to

  1143. find Christ

  1144. in all

  1145. of

  1146. scripture?

  1147. And what

  1148. about when

  1149. it comes

  1150. to our

  1151. priority?

  1152. We see

  1153. clearly

  1154. Mary's

  1155. priority

  1156. in our

  1157. crazy

  1158. busy

  1159. world,

  1160. with our

  1161. busy

  1162. lives,

  1163. where does

  1164. the word

  1165. of God

  1166. fit?

  1167. Does

  1168. the word

  1169. of God

  1170. fit?

  1171. remember

  1172. what we

  1173. have

  1174. when we

  1175. pick up

  1176. our

  1177. Bibles.

  1178. We have

  1179. what so

  1180. many people

  1181. are looking

  1182. for.

  1183. They're

  1184. looking to

  1185. connect

  1186. with God.

  1187. They're

  1188. looking to

  1189. find where

  1190. can I

  1191. meet with

  1192. God?

  1193. We meet

  1194. God in

  1195. his word.

  1196. This is the

  1197. place where

  1198. God would

  1199. speak to

  1200. us,

  1201. where we

  1202. can actually

  1203. meet with

  1204. Christ

  1205. Jesus,

  1206. to understand

  1207. that we

  1208. have the

  1209. same

  1210. privilege as

  1211. Mary.

  1212. Every time

  1213. we open

  1214. our Bible,

  1215. that should

  1216. help us to

  1217. make it a

  1218. priority,

  1219. that we

  1220. can sit

  1221. at Jesus'

  1222. feet every

  1223. time we

  1224. come to

  1225. church or

  1226. we open

  1227. a Bible.

  1228. Think about

  1229. that.

  1230. When we

  1231. come to

  1232. church,

  1233. this is no

  1234. ordinary

  1235. thing.

  1236. We have

  1237. a standing

  1238. weekly

  1239. invitation to

  1240. fellowship with

  1241. the Lord

  1242. Jesus,

  1243. the King

  1244. and Savior.

  1245. that privilege

  1246. that Mary

  1247. enjoyed,

  1248. we get to

  1249. enjoy every

  1250. week.

  1251. We can

  1252. listen to

  1253. him every

  1254. week.

  1255. We can

  1256. meet him

  1257. together as

  1258. we worship.

  1259. So as we

  1260. understand that,

  1261. let's not

  1262. let lesser

  1263. things,

  1264. even when

  1265. like Martha

  1266. they're good

  1267. things,

  1268. take us from

  1269. the bigger and

  1270. better joy of

  1271. knowing Jesus

  1272. in his

  1273. word.

  1274. Last

  1275. portrait,

  1276. and it's

  1277. the portrait

  1278. of Jesus

  1279. himself.

  1280. Jesus as

  1281. he shows

  1282. and brings

  1283. the grace

  1284. of God.

  1285. Now remember

  1286. this is all

  1287. happening in

  1288. the context

  1289. of hospitality

  1290. and of

  1291. sharing a

  1292. meal,

  1293. and that

  1294. kind of

  1295. imagery is

  1296. helpful for

  1297. us as we

  1298. consider Luke's

  1299. portrait of

  1300. Jesus.

  1301. Think first

  1302. of all about

  1303. an open

  1304. table.

  1305. Recognize in

  1306. this little

  1307. section we're

  1308. being reminded

  1309. that there

  1310. are no

  1311. boundaries,

  1312. there are

  1313. no limits

  1314. to God's

  1315. grace.

  1316. Just as we

  1317. said a few

  1318. moments ago,

  1319. the model

  1320. disciple would

  1321. have shocked

  1322. people in

  1323. Jesus' day

  1324. because it

  1325. was Mary.

  1326. All of the

  1327. Gospels are

  1328. telling us

  1329. Jesus will

  1330. teach anyone,

  1331. Jesus will

  1332. share friendship

  1333. with anyone

  1334. who will

  1335. listen,

  1336. who will

  1337. follow,

  1338. who will

  1339. believe.

  1340. Nothing has

  1341. changed on

  1342. that.

  1343. Jesus is on

  1344. his journey

  1345. to the

  1346. cross to

  1347. extend the

  1348. grace of

  1349. forgiveness so

  1350. that whoever

  1351. believes in

  1352. him should

  1353. not perish but

  1354. have everlasting

  1355. life.

  1356. Whoever we

  1357. are,

  1358. wherever we're

  1359. from,

  1360. Jesus invites

  1361. us to meet

  1362. with him,

  1363. to receive God's

  1364. love from him,

  1365. to be welcomed

  1366. into friendship

  1367. and fellowship

  1368. by him.

  1369. He has an

  1370. open table.

  1371. Let's think

  1372. also about a

  1373. balanced diet

  1374. to put those

  1375. two stories

  1376. together, the

  1377. Good Samaritan

  1378. and Martha and

  1379. Mary, on the

  1380. way of Jesus.

  1381. These are

  1382. stories taking

  1383. place while

  1384. Jesus is on a

  1385. journey.

  1386. While we are

  1387. on the journey

  1388. of following

  1389. Jesus, there is

  1390. to be service,

  1391. like the Good

  1392. Samaritan showing

  1393. love for

  1394. neighbor, and

  1395. there is to be

  1396. silence,

  1397. quiet hearts,

  1398. listening to

  1399. Jesus, slowing

  1400. down to listen

  1401. in.

  1402. We are called

  1403. to love God's

  1404. world, to meet

  1405. people's needs, and

  1406. to show mercy, and

  1407. we're called to

  1408. love God's word, to

  1409. hear Jesus, to

  1410. obey Jesus.

  1411. This is the

  1412. wonderful balance

  1413. we see in Jesus'

  1414. own life.

  1415. To read the

  1416. Gospels, we read

  1417. there are some

  1418. days where Jesus

  1419. seems to spend

  1420. all his time

  1421. healing people,

  1422. and teaching

  1423. people, but we

  1424. also discover he

  1425. spends whole

  1426. nights of quiet

  1427. time, a prayer

  1428. with his

  1429. father.

  1430. Jesus loved to

  1431. bring in the

  1432. kingdom through

  1433. his miracles, and

  1434. he loved to

  1435. teach, and show

  1436. that he is the

  1437. king bringing the

  1438. kingdom of God.

  1439. So while the

  1440. emphasis on our

  1441. text today is on

  1442. the priority of

  1443. time with God in

  1444. his word, we can

  1445. understand that

  1446. that's also of

  1447. relevance as we

  1448. think about going

  1449. out into the

  1450. world and of

  1451. serving.

  1452. as we meet

  1453. with Jesus, as

  1454. he would change

  1455. our heart, as

  1456. we would receive

  1457. spiritual power, as

  1458. we would know

  1459. God's will for how

  1460. to please him, that's

  1461. going to help us

  1462. as we look to

  1463. help others.

  1464. One last thing as

  1465. we think about this

  1466. portrait of Jesus,

  1467. is to recognize

  1468. that because Jesus

  1469. is so gracious, we

  1470. have an invitation

  1471. to a feast.

  1472. See, we could

  1473. finish a sermon

  1474. like this with a

  1475. call to duty.

  1476. Christians, you

  1477. should read your

  1478. Bible.

  1479. Christians, you

  1480. should be in

  1481. church.

  1482. And of course, those

  1483. things are true, and

  1484. we don't want to

  1485. miss that.

  1486. But there's a

  1487. better way, by

  1488. reminding ourselves

  1489. of the privilege we

  1490. have, that we're

  1491. invited to a

  1492. wonderful, joyful

  1493. feast.

  1494. As God's word

  1495. says, taste and

  1496. see that the

  1497. Lord is good.

  1498. Sunday by Sunday,

  1499. recognize and

  1500. enjoy the fact that

  1501. Jesus comes to

  1502. meet with us as

  1503. his people, that

  1504. he comes to

  1505. feed us from

  1506. his word, that

  1507. he wants to

  1508. satisfy our

  1509. hearts' desires

  1510. with himself and

  1511. to increase our

  1512. delight in him.

  1513. And recognize

  1514. again, every time

  1515. you and I open

  1516. our Bible,

  1517. whenever we do

  1518. that, we're

  1519. invited to the

  1520. joy of hearing

  1521. from the living

  1522. God, of meeting

  1523. with our God

  1524. and Savior.

  1525. So together,

  1526. will we slow

  1527. down?

  1528. Will we switch

  1529. off so that we

  1530. can spend time

  1531. with Jesus and

  1532. receive the bread

  1533. of life from

  1534. him?

  1535. Let me pray for

  1536. us.

  1537. Let's pray.

  1538. Lord, our God,

  1539. we thank you for

  1540. this little story

  1541. which is so

  1542. revealing of

  1543. us and for

  1544. us.

  1545. Lord, so

  1546. often we can

  1547. find ourselves

  1548. so busy,

  1549. busy with

  1550. necessary things,

  1551. busy with

  1552. good things,

  1553. that time with

  1554. you can be

  1555. squeezed out.

  1556. Now, that time

  1557. reading the

  1558. Bible, time to

  1559. pray, time to

  1560. worship with

  1561. God's people,

  1562. can seem like

  1563. an optional

  1564. extra, rather

  1565. than being the

  1566. air we need to

  1567. breathe, the

  1568. food and the

  1569. water that we

  1570. need in order

  1571. to live well

  1572. and to

  1573. flourish.

  1574. Lord, will

  1575. you make us

  1576. wise as we

  1577. think about our

  1578. own lives and

  1579. situations, make

  1580. us wise to

  1581. see how we

  1582. might make

  1583. changes, how

  1584. we might find

  1585. the time to

  1586. spend with

  1587. you, to be

  1588. served by

  1589. you, to

  1590. receive grace

  1591. from you, and

  1592. not just for a

  1593. moment, but

  1594. you might give

  1595. us the

  1596. privilege of

  1597. unhurried time

  1598. with Jesus

  1599. our Savior.

  1600. Lord, as we've

  1601. heard Jesus

  1602. say that

  1603. listening to

  1604. him is the

  1605. better portion,

  1606. it's the one

  1607. thing that's

  1608. necessary, will

  1609. you help us to

  1610. pay attention

  1611. when we read

  1612. the Bible and

  1613. when we come

  1614. to church, that

  1615. we would be

  1616. shaped by what

  1617. we read, that

  1618. we would be

  1619. growing to be

  1620. more like

  1621. Jesus our

  1622. Savior, that

  1623. we would allow

  1624. your word to

  1625. do its work

  1626. in our lives.

  1627. And Lord, will

  1628. you keep showing

  1629. us more grace

  1630. through Jesus our

  1631. wonderful Savior.

  1632. We thank you

  1633. that he is so

  1634. kind, that he

  1635. would meet with

  1636. us, to speak

  1637. to us, to

  1638. give us strength

  1639. for our journey

  1640. of faith.

  1641. help us to

  1642. choose wisely.

  1643. Help us to

  1644. choose for our

  1645. ultimate good.

  1646. We pray in

  1647. Jesus' name.

  1648. Amen.

  1649. Now, we'll

  1650. close singing

  1651. the hymn,

  1652. Speak, O

  1653. Lord, reminding

  1654. us again of

  1655. what God would

  1656. do for us in

  1657. his word.

  1658. So let's stand

  1659. as we're able

  1660. to sing, Speak,

  1661. O Lord.

  1662. or

  1663. Be your
