  1. God, in Jesus our Savior, and through the Spirit. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  2. Now, we have a lengthy portion of Luke 11 that we're going to think about together,

  3. so we're going to break it up into two sections, and Steve Willis is going to come and read for us

  4. now from verse 14 to verse 28. Thanks, Steve.

  5. Luke 11, verses 14 to 28.

    Luke 11:14–28

  6. Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke,

  7. and the crowd was amazed. But some of them said, by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving

  8. out demons. Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to

  9. them, any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will

  10. fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that

  11. I drive out demons by Beelzebul. Now, if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers

  12. drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,

  13. then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house,

  14. his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor

  15. in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever

  16. does not gather with me scatters. When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid

  17. places, seeking rest, and does not find it. Then it says, I will return to the house I left. When it

  18. arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits,

  19. more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person

  20. is worse than the first. As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out,

  21. blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you. He replied, blessed rather are those who hear

  22. the word of God and obey it. This is God's word.

  23. Thank you, Steve. And we'll pick up our reading there in a few moments. But before that,

  24. we're going to sing a portion of Psalm 31. We're going to sing together from verse 19 to verse 24.

  25. And again, we'll stand together so that we can sing this section.

  26. Your goodness, Lord, is very great, prepared for those who fear your name.

  27. To show your goodness openly, to all who your protection claim.

  28. your presence hides and shelters them from those who plot to take their life.

  29. And in your tent you keep them safe from each other.

  30. evil times that stir up strife.

  31. The Lord be praised because he showed the wonder of his love to me.

  32. When in a city I was trapped, surrounded by the enemy.

  33. In my alarm I rashly said that I was hidden from your eyes.

  34. But when I call to you for help in grace, you listened to my cries.

  35. O love the Lord, O you his saints.

  36. The faithful will be kept by God.

  37. But he will give the proud.

  38. There do be strong.

  39. Take heart, hope in the Lord.

  40. So we're going to continue reading in Luke chapter 11 in our church Bibles.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  41. It's page 1043.

  42. In case anyone's looking for a Bible and you were caught out because we used to have them

  43. at the front door.

  44. Now they're in the back corner.

  45. So if you need a copy, you can go and grab one there.

  46. and we're going to read from verse 29 to the end of the chapter. Let's again hear God's word.

  47. When Jesus had finished speaking, sorry verse 29, as the crowds increased, Jesus said,

  48. this is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.

  49. For as Jonah was assigned to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.

  50. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them.

  51. For she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

  52. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it,

  53. for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.

  54. No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden or under a bowl.

  55. Instead, they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.

  56. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light.

  57. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.

  58. See to it then that the light within you is not darkness.

  59. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light and no part of it dark,

  60. it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.

  61. When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him.

  62. So he went in and reclined at the table.

  63. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.

  64. Then the Lord said to him,

  65. Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish,

  66. but inside you are full of greed and wickedness, you foolish people.

  67. Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?

  68. But now, as for what is inside you, be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.

  69. Woe to you, Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue, and all other kinds of garden herbs,

  70. but you neglect justice and the love of God.

  71. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

  72. Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues

  73. and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.

  74. Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,

  75. which people walk over without knowing it.

  76. One of the experts in the law answered him,

  77. Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.

  78. Jesus replied, and you experts in the law,

  79. Woe to you,

  80. because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry,

  81. and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.

  82. Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets,

  83. and it was your ancestors who killed them.

  84. So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did.

  85. They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.

  86. Because of this, God in his wisdom said,

  87. I will send them prophets and apostles,

  88. some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.

  89. Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets

  90. that's been shed since the beginning of the world,

  91. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah,

  92. who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.

  93. Yes, I tell you,

  94. this generation will be held responsible for it all.

  95. Woe to you experts in the law,

  96. because you have taken away the key to knowledge.

  97. You yourselves have not entered,

  98. and you have hindered those who were entering.

  99. When Jesus went outside,

  100. the Pharisees and the teachers of the law

  101. began to oppose him fiercely,

  102. and to besiege him with questions,

  103. waiting to catch him

  104. in something he might say.

  105. This is God's word.

  106. So this evening we come to this point in the journey of Jesus,

  107. where he is facing different types of opposition.

  108. And as we begin,

  109. it's important for us to recognize

  110. that opposition is a reality for Christians.

  111. Even within our own church,

  112. the different countries and the families that we represent,

  113. opposition comes in very different ways.

  114. In certain places,

  115. it's just simply that views are unwelcomed.

  116. For other people,

  117. their experience is that coming to faith

  118. means their family won't accept them.

  119. Some people live in countries

  120. where Christians and churches

  121. come under intense surveillance from the state.

  122. Others live in places

  123. where churches and the Christian community

  124. can be targeted at particular times

  125. to score political points.

  126. For some of us,

  127. to be a Christian will be to be excluded

  128. from certain groups

  129. or certain opportunities.

  130. To follow Jesus

  131. is to share in his experience

  132. is to know opposition.

  133. This journey that Jesus is taking

  134. is a journey to Jerusalem.

  135. It's a journey towards the cross.

  136. Indeed, we could use the language of verse 49

  137. and recognize Jesus stands in that line

  138. of God's messengers

  139. who will be persecuted and killed.

  140. And as Jesus would say to his disciples,

  141. if they hated me,

  142. they will hate you also.

  143. So our purpose this evening

  144. is to consider

  145. what did the opposition look like

  146. in this section of Luke's gospel

  147. on this journey?

  148. To listen in as Jesus responds

  149. and to let this confrontation

  150. examine us as well.

  151. Especially as we recognize

  152. that it is nothing more important

  153. than our own response to Jesus.

  154. So let's look first of all

  155. at verses 14 to 28

  156. where we see the first sign of opposition

  157. as the people misrepresent Jesus.

  158. So to just follow what's going on,

  159. we read in verse 14

  160. that Jesus has driven out a demon.

  161. That he has done something incredibly good

  162. and powerful and merciful.

  163. But the accusation comes,

  164. yeah, Jesus does that

  165. because Jesus is on the devil's side.

  166. How does Jesus respond?

  167. If Satan is divided against himself,

  168. how can his kingdom stand?

  169. He challenges their logic.

  170. Of course he is not a part

  171. of the kingdom of darkness.

  172. We know this.

  173. If a political party begins infighting,

  174. then that group will be weakened

  175. and collapse or a sports team

  176. that begins to turn on one another.

  177. Jesus also says to them,

  178. listen, your followers

  179. are doing the same thing

  180. and you don't call them

  181. part of the kingdom of darkness.

  182. Rather, positively,

  183. what does Jesus say?

  184. Verse 20,

  185. if I drive out demons

  186. by the finger of God,

  187. then the kingdom of God

  188. has come upon you.

  189. That's a wonderful image.

  190. Just the finger of God

  191. is sufficient to drive out this demon.

  192. And it represents, again,

  193. the breaking in of God's kingdom.

  194. Verses 21 and 22,

  195. there is another reality here

  196. as Jesus pits himself

  197. against the devil,

  198. acknowledging, yes,

  199. the devil is a strong man,

  200. but Jesus is the stronger man.

  201. And he is on a rescue mission.

  202. His work on the cross

  203. will be the climax

  204. of that rescue mission.

  205. His resurrection

  206. will be that victory accomplished.

  207. Spiritual hostages set free,

  208. transferred from the kingdom of darkness

  209. to the kingdom of God.

  210. He faces misrepresentation,

  211. but that's how he responds,

  212. by pointing to the reality

  213. of who he is

  214. and the kingdom that he's bringing.

  215. And now Jesus will bring

  216. his own challenge

  217. to his opponents.

  218. In verse 23,

  219. notice what he says,

  220. whoever is not with me

  221. is against me,

  222. and whoever does not gather with me

  223. scatters.

  224. He asks them the question,

  225. whose side are you on?

  226. There is the fighting imagery

  227. in a battle.

  228. You're either for or against.

  229. There's no neutral position here.

  230. When it comes to the work of farming,

  231. you're either helping in the harvest

  232. or you're hindering.

  233. Jesus is saying,

  234. when it comes to me,

  235. there is no neutral position.

  236. And then towards the end of the section,

  237. and especially in verse 28,

  238. we can hear him asking the question,

  239. how is our hearing spiritually?

  240. So he talks about this situation.

  241. Suppose a person is cleansed from a demon.

  242. So the demon is driven out,

  243. but there's no replacement going on.

  244. Not replaced with God and his word,

  245. not replaced with faith.

  246. Jesus will say,

  247. well, the final condition of that person

  248. is actually going to end up being worse.

  249. And then he responds to someone in the crowd

  250. crying out,

  251. blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.

  252. What a blessing to be in Jesus' biological family.

  253. And Jesus says,

  254. here's what's better,

  255. hearing and obeying

  256. as Jesus brings the word of God,

  257. because it's a word that brings life.

  258. It's a word that saves.

  259. So as we think about Jesus being misrepresented,

  260. and as he challenges his listeners,

  261. it's important for us to ask ourselves the question,

  262. how is my hearing?

  263. In 2019,

  264. in Australia,

  265. the Peaks Observatory Radio Telescope,

  266. that big thing up there,

  267. the listeners got really excited.

  268. So they spent all their time

  269. listening to signals from around the galaxy.

  270. They got really excited

  271. because they were pretty sure

  272. they picked up signs

  273. coming from another planet.

  274. They thought extraterrestrial life

  275. was trying to communicate.

  276. And it went public.

  277. Really exciting news.

  278. And then a few days later,

  279. there was the rather embarrassed retraction.

  280. Actually,

  281. it was just the case

  282. that some signals got crossed,

  283. the signal got mixed up.

  284. They heard the message wrong.

  285. Jesus came

  286. as God's promised king,

  287. bringing the good news

  288. of spiritual rescue,

  289. transferring people

  290. from death to life,

  291. calling people into relationship

  292. with God through faith in him.

  293. All of this profoundly good news,

  294. but as we see here,

  295. Jesus and his message

  296. misrepresented.

  297. And it's a truth

  298. throughout Christian history

  299. that the Christian faith

  300. and the Christian message

  301. has often been misrepresented,

  302. that people have got mixed up

  303. for a variety of reasons.

  304. So in the first century,

  305. even as the church

  306. was growing rapidly

  307. through the Roman Empire,

  308. you will discover as well

  309. that there was a real hatred

  310. and hostility

  311. towards the Christian faith,

  312. in part,

  313. because it was mixed up

  314. and misrepresented.

  315. So they heard Christians said,

  316. Jesus is Lord,

  317. not Caesar is Lord.

  318. So they presumed then,

  319. Christians would be

  320. the worst of citizens.

  321. They're bad news.

  322. We need to get rid of them.

  323. They heard about the Lord's Supper,

  324. about the bread and the wine

  325. representing the body

  326. and the blood,

  327. and they got mixed up

  328. and they thought,

  329. Christians are cannibals.

  330. They're bad news.

  331. Stay away from them.

  332. All through church history,

  333. this kind of thing,

  334. 21st century,

  335. Christianity still gets misrepresented,

  336. the Christian church,

  337. and its message still gets

  338. treated as bad news,

  339. doesn't it?

  340. Any exclusive truth claim

  341. is bad.

  342. It's intolerant.

  343. Religion is the problem

  344. in society.

  345. Christians are the narrow-minded,

  346. bigoted ones

  347. who are bad news

  348. in our day and age.

  349. We hear it in different ways,

  350. don't we?

  351. So in the reality

  352. of spiritual opposition,

  353. where Jesus and his church

  354. and his message

  355. are likely to be misrepresented

  356. and opposed,

  357. will we first of all,

  358. as Jesus says,

  359. will we hear and obey

  360. the gospel word?

  361. Do we recognize

  362. and do we trust

  363. that Jesus came from God

  364. as God

  365. to save lost and dying people?

  366. And if we do,

  367. will we have the courage then

  368. to follow Jesus as king?

  369. Even when that comes with a cost.

  370. Even if the people around us

  371. choose to misrepresent Jesus

  372. and misrepresent us.

  373. The question always remains,

  374. where do we stand?

  375. Do we take our stand with Jesus

  376. or are we against Jesus?

  377. So we need to be careful

  378. about how our hearing is,

  379. especially in the context

  380. of spiritual opposition,

  381. that we would learn

  382. to be dependent on him

  383. and on his word,

  384. that we might stand our ground.

  385. Let's look now

  386. at the second set of opposition

  387. that we find against Jesus,

  388. verse 29 to 36,

  389. the crowd increases

  390. and Jesus acknowledges

  391. and recognizes

  392. a fresh challenge.

  393. As the crowds increased,

  394. Jesus said,

  395. this is a wicked generation.

  396. It asks for a sign,

  397. but none will be given it

  398. except the sign of Jonah.

  399. Second up opposition,

  400. rejecting evidence for Jesus.

  401. Maybe you've had this experience

  402. of being in a foreign country

  403. and finding yourself

  404. at various points

  405. feeling lost.

  406. Perhaps the signs,

  407. road signs or airport signs,

  408. are only in an international language

  409. and not in English,

  410. and it can be thoroughly confusing.

  411. There are some people in Jesus' day

  412. who never seem satisfied

  413. with the signs that Jesus gave them.

  414. We already heard it in verse 16.

  415. Others tested Jesus

  416. by asking for a sign from heaven,

  417. demanding more signs,

  418. demanding more evidence

  419. that Jesus is

  420. who he says he is.

  421. By now,

  422. in Luke's gospel,

  423. what have we come to discover?

  424. Well, we have just seen him

  425. drive out a demon.

  426. We have seen and heard of him

  427. healing many, many sick people

  428. with various kinds of diseases.

  429. We've seen his power over nature

  430. as he has stopped a storm.

  431. We have seen his power over sickness

  432. and even over death.

  433. We have seen him feed a huge crowd

  434. with one small boy's lunchbox.

  435. The problem is not a lack of evidence.

  436. The problem is spiritual blindness

  437. and hard-heartedness.

  438. They could not and would not read the signs.

  439. And there is that refusal

  440. to trust and believe.

  441. So what does Jesus say to them?

  442. Verse 29,

  443. you're asking for a sign.

  444. None will be given

  445. except the sign of Jonah.

  446. So Jesus is going to take them back

  447. to the Old Testament.

  448. And it's really interesting.

  449. Jesus points them back

  450. to the Old Testament

  451. and says,

  452. look, it points forward to me.

  453. If we want to know

  454. how to read the Old Testament

  455. like Jesus,

  456. that's one important thing

  457. for us to learn.

  458. As we read the Old Testament,

  459. we're looking to see

  460. how it is fulfilled

  461. in Jesus.

  462. But he gives them

  463. what he calls

  464. the sign of Jonah.

  465. Jonah.

  466. What does he mean by that?

  467. Who was Jonah?

  468. Well, Jonah, of course,

  469. was that Old Testament prophet

  470. sent on his mission.

  471. A mission to declare

  472. the judgment of God

  473. on Nineveh.

  474. But to declare that judgment

  475. implicitly was

  476. to open up

  477. a window for mercy.

  478. Jonah was reluctant.

  479. He tried to run from God.

  480. God sent a storm.

  481. Jonah was thrown overboard,

  482. swallowed by a fish.

  483. Okay, but here's the sign

  484. of Jonah, I think,

  485. that just as,

  486. and Jesus would say this

  487. in Matthew's Gospel,

  488. just as Jonah spent

  489. three days and nights

  490. in the belly of the fish,

  491. so Jesus would spend

  492. those three days and nights

  493. in the heart of the earth.

  494. And just as Jonah,

  495. as it were,

  496. came back from death

  497. to life

  498. to preach a message

  499. that demands response,

  500. the response

  501. of repentance

  502. and faith.

  503. So Jesus would die

  504. and rise

  505. and calls us all

  506. to repent

  507. and to believe.

  508. That's the sign

  509. that he's going to give

  510. to them.

  511. In his dying and rising,

  512. he's going to show

  513. he's the greater

  514. than Jonah.

  515. But he doesn't just

  516. stop there

  517. as he gives

  518. Old Testament lessons,

  519. does he?

  520. He also talks

  521. in verse 31

  522. about the Queen

  523. of the South,

  524. perhaps more familiarly

  525. known to us

  526. as the Queen

  527. of Sheba.

  528. And it says

  529. there in verse 31,

  530. she'll rise

  531. at the judgment

  532. with the people

  533. of this generation

  534. and condemn them

  535. for she came

  536. from the ends

  537. of the earth

  538. to listen to

  539. Solomon's wisdom.

  540. And one greater

  541. than Solomon

  542. is here.

  543. So there was

  544. this queen

  545. who traveled

  546. hundreds and

  547. hundreds of miles,

  548. such was the fame

  549. of Solomon,

  550. God's king

  551. with God's wisdom.

  552. And Jesus says,

  553. she was wise,

  554. you're unwise,

  555. you're going to be

  556. condemned because

  557. Jesus is a greater

  558. king than Solomon.

  559. Jesus has greater

  560. wisdom than Solomon.

  561. Paul talks about

  562. Jesus,

  563. the wisdom of God,

  564. our righteousness,

  565. our holiness,

  566. our redemption.

  567. Jesus is all

  568. the wisdom we need,

  569. but his generation

  570. were rejecting him.

  571. So she becomes

  572. a sign that

  573. will lead them

  574. to judgment

  575. and condemnation.

  576. And then even

  577. the men of Nineveh,

  578. verse 32,

  579. will stand up

  580. at the judgment

  581. with this generation

  582. and condemn it

  583. for they repented

  584. at the preaching

  585. of Jonah

  586. and now something

  587. greater than Jonah

  588. is here.

  589. Nineveh was a

  590. really evil city.

  591. But when they heard

  592. that message,

  593. 40 days in Nineveh

  594. will be destroyed,

  595. there was repentance

  596. from the greatest

  597. to the least

  598. and God showed

  599. mercy.

  600. Jesus,

  601. a greater preacher,

  602. bringing eternal life,

  603. bringing grace

  604. from God

  605. as God himself

  606. comes to them

  607. and they reject him

  608. and they demand

  609. more evidence.

  610. They say no.

  611. And then Jesus

  612. uses this imagery

  613. in verses 33

  614. and 36

  615. by way of

  616. challenging

  617. the opponents.

  618. Asking the question,

  619. how is

  620. your spiritual

  621. eyesight?

  622. Look at verse 34,

  623. your eye

  624. is the lamp

  625. of your body.

  626. When your eyes

  627. are healthy,

  628. your whole body

  629. also is full of light,

  630. but when they're unhealthy,

  631. your body

  632. also is full

  633. of darkness.

  634. See to it then

  635. that the light

  636. within you

  637. is not darkness.

  638. Jesus has come

  639. providing the light

  640. of God

  641. and it is being

  642. rejected

  643. in favor

  644. of darkness.

  645. And so Jesus

  646. says to them,

  647. how you see

  648. Jesus,

  649. how we see

  650. Jesus,

  651. how we respond

  652. to him

  653. is a sign

  654. of whether we

  655. have God's

  656. light or not.

  657. Do we respond

  658. to the light

  659. or do we remain

  660. in spiritual

  661. darkness

  662. and blindness?

  663. darkness.

  664. Jesus is saying

  665. our view of Jesus

  666. determines

  667. our spiritual

  668. condition.

  669. How is my

  670. eyesight today?

  671. Have you ever

  672. taken an eye

  673. test?

  674. You know the letters

  675. are there on the chart,

  676. they're right in front

  677. of you,

  678. but you can't

  679. make them out.

  680. I guess every glass

  681. is wearer

  682. has had that

  683. experience.

  684. You know,

  685. when it gets fuzzy

  686. it's a sign

  687. that our eyesight

  688. is not great,

  689. that we need

  690. fresh lenses.

  691. If you've ever

  692. tried to live

  693. with fuzzy vision

  694. it can be

  695. uncomfortable

  696. sometimes.

  697. I'm not a huge

  698. fan of wearing

  699. glasses,

  700. so I often walk

  701. past people

  702. in the street

  703. who I know

  704. but I don't

  705. realize that I

  706. know them.

  707. That's uncomfortable.

  708. They can also

  709. be dangerous

  710. if you don't

  711. know where

  712. you are going.

  713. And so it's

  714. important for us

  715. to ask

  716. spiritually,

  717. do I

  718. see

  719. Jesus

  720. clearly?

  721. maybe especially

  722. when we think

  723. about the

  724. people around

  725. us who

  726. maybe bring

  727. challenges

  728. and are

  729. looking to

  730. know,

  731. you know,

  732. I want more

  733. evidence,

  734. I want more

  735. proof,

  736. and they have

  737. challenge after

  738. challenge.

  739. Jesus reminds

  740. us that there's

  741. the reality of

  742. spiritual blindness.

  743. And so one of

  744. the things that we

  745. absolutely need to

  746. be doing

  747. is to be

  748. praying,

  749. and that God

  750. would allow

  751. the light of

  752. the Lord Jesus

  753. to shine in

  754. that person's

  755. heart and

  756. life.

  757. It just as

  758. Jesus invited

  759. his opponents

  760. to read

  761. their Bibles

  762. in order to

  763. see Jesus

  764. clearly,

  765. perhaps one of

  766. the best things

  767. that we can do

  768. with our friends

  769. or our family

  770. members who

  771. have questions

  772. is to take

  773. them to God's

  774. Word,

  775. to invite them

  776. to read a

  777. Gospel,

  778. to discover

  779. who Jesus

  780. really is,

  781. because often

  782. the version of

  783. Christianity or

  784. the Jesus that

  785. people are

  786. rejecting is

  787. not the same

  788. as what's

  789. found in

  790. God's

  791. Word.

  792. It's important

  793. that we

  794. know and

  795. see that

  796. Jesus is

  797. more than,

  798. you know,

  799. Jesus talks

  800. about I am

  801. greater than.

  802. He's not just

  803. a good man,

  804. he's not just

  805. a wise man,

  806. he's not just

  807. a role model,

  808. he is greater

  809. than anyone,

  810. anything,

  811. he is the

  812. king we need,

  813. he's the

  814. prophet we need,

  815. he's the

  816. wisdom we need,

  817. and he's the

  818. king, the

  819. prophet, the

  820. wisdom that

  821. the people

  822. around us

  823. need also.

  824. So especially

  825. as we recognize

  826. as Jesus

  827. speaks to us

  828. that the

  829. judgment we

  830. pass on

  831. Jesus now

  832. affects the

  833. judgment Jesus

  834. passes on us

  835. when he returns,

  836. how important

  837. it is

  838. for us to

  839. pray and

  840. to seek

  841. and to

  842. share

  843. who Jesus

  844. truly is,

  845. what he came

  846. to do

  847. with people

  848. who are

  849. struggling

  850. and wondering

  851. about the

  852. evidence.

  853. The third

  854. opposition

  855. that we see

  856. from verse 37

  857. to the end

  858. of the chapter

  859. is the

  860. opposition of

  861. those who

  862. choose man-made

  863. religion over

  864. Jesus.

  865. there are

  866. particular

  867. opponents in

  868. view here

  869. in verse 37,

  870. it's the

  871. Pharisees,

  872. in verse 45,

  873. it's the

  874. experts in

  875. the law.

  876. These two

  877. groups of

  878. religious leaders

  879. who of all

  880. people should

  881. be hearing

  882. with faith.

  883. They should

  884. be reading

  885. the signs

  886. and recognizing

  887. who Jesus

  888. is, and

  889. they should

  890. in turn

  891. then be

  892. pointing people

  893. to trust

  894. in Jesus

  895. as God's

  896. promised

  897. king and

  898. savior.

  899. But their

  900. problem

  901. is that they're

  902. choosing their

  903. own superficial

  904. man-made

  905. religion

  906. that's based

  907. on works

  908. rather than

  909. God's salvation

  910. that comes

  911. through grace,

  912. that comes

  913. through trusting

  914. in Jesus.

  915. And so as

  916. Jesus confronts

  917. this opposition

  918. we discover

  919. that their

  920. hearts are

  921. unchanged,

  922. their hearts

  923. are unclean,

  924. but they feel

  925. really good about

  926. themselves because

  927. of the externals.

  928. Jesus

  929. is

  930. meal time,

  931. verse 37.

  932. A Pharisee

  933. has invited

  934. Jesus to

  935. eat with

  936. him.

  937. And notice

  938. the Pharisee's

  939. surprise.

  940. Jesus

  941. doesn't wash

  942. according to

  943. the rules

  944. that we've

  945. set.

  946. He doesn't

  947. conform to

  948. our standards

  949. of what it

  950. means to be

  951. clean.

  952. Jesus says

  953. to him,

  954. you don't

  955. conform to

  956. God's

  957. standard of

  958. cleanness.

  959. You Pharisees

  960. clean the

  961. outside of the

  962. cup and dish,

  963. but inside

  964. you're full of

  965. greed and

  966. wickedness.

  967. Jesus wants

  968. to confront

  969. the religious

  970. leaders,

  971. relying on

  972. a man-made

  973. religion.

  974. It's what's

  975. on the

  976. inside that

  977. counts.

  978. How is

  979. your heart?

  980. Rather than

  981. being concerned

  982. simply to

  983. look good

  984. at playing

  985. at religion.

  986. It becomes

  987. clear,

  988. Jesus hates

  989. that,

  990. God hates

  991. that,

  992. he wants

  993. sincerity,

  994. we see it

  995. in the

  996. Old Testament,

  997. and we see

  998. it here as

  999. well.

  1000. And as if

  1001. that wasn't

  1002. enough,

  1003. Jesus then

  1004. proceeds to

  1005. pronounce

  1006. these six

  1007. woes,

  1008. these judgments

  1009. are pronounced.

  1010. So look at

  1011. verse 42,

  1012. there is woe

  1013. on these

  1014. Pharisees for

  1015. their hypocrisy.

  1016. So they're

  1017. brilliant at

  1018. tithing their

  1019. herbs,

  1020. you know,

  1021. they've got

  1022. their garden

  1023. herbs all

  1024. tithed neatly,

  1025. but they don't

  1026. love their

  1027. neighbor in

  1028. practice justice,

  1029. and they're

  1030. neglecting the

  1031. love of God.

  1032. And they think

  1033. that they're

  1034. doing well.

  1035. He confronts

  1036. their pride

  1037. in verse 43,

  1038. their love

  1039. to be seen

  1040. before other

  1041. people,

  1042. rather than

  1043. being humble

  1044. before their

  1045. God.

  1046. He confronts

  1047. their uncleanness

  1048. in verse 44,

  1049. you're like

  1050. unmarked

  1051. graves.

  1052. They are

  1053. unclean,

  1054. and people

  1055. are stumbling

  1056. upon them

  1057. in their

  1058. teaching,

  1059. and because of

  1060. their influence,

  1061. they're making

  1062. others unclean

  1063. too,

  1064. they're dragging

  1065. others into

  1066. the same mess

  1067. as them with

  1068. their bad

  1069. teaching.

  1070. Verse 45,

  1071. one of the

  1072. experts in the

  1073. law said,

  1074. teacher,

  1075. when you say

  1076. these things,

  1077. you insult

  1078. us also,

  1079. and Jesus

  1080. has some

  1081. woes for

  1082. them also.

  1083. Verse 46,

  1084. because of

  1085. their legalism,

  1086. piling on,

  1087. heaping on,

  1088. a crushing

  1089. burden of

  1090. man-made

  1091. religion,

  1092. not helping

  1093. by cutting

  1094. through all

  1095. that,

  1096. and showing

  1097. Jesus is

  1098. Lord and

  1099. the one

  1100. they need

  1101. to trust.

  1102. He challenges

  1103. them for

  1104. their hypocrisy.

  1105. Their

  1106. ancestors killed

  1107. God's messengers,

  1108. the prophets.

  1109. they build

  1110. tombs,

  1111. thinking they're

  1112. doing this

  1113. great religious

  1114. thing.

  1115. Jesus says,

  1116. you're basically

  1117. saying that

  1118. what your

  1119. forefathers did,

  1120. you approve

  1121. of.

  1122. He will say

  1123. to them,

  1124. you stand

  1125. in line

  1126. of those

  1127. who kill

  1128. God's prophets.

  1129. And of course,

  1130. as the story

  1131. goes on,

  1132. we know that

  1133. they will do

  1134. the same

  1135. to Jesus.

  1136. And then we

  1137. get to

  1138. verse 52,

  1139. that last

  1140. woe.

  1141. Woe to

  1142. you,

  1143. because you've

  1144. taken away

  1145. the key

  1146. to knowledge.

  1147. You yourselves

  1148. have not

  1149. entered,

  1150. and you have

  1151. hindered those

  1152. who were

  1153. entering.

  1154. What a

  1155. dreadful

  1156. situation.

  1157. They've

  1158. locked and

  1159. barricaded

  1160. the door

  1161. to know

  1162. God

  1163. through faith

  1164. in Jesus.

  1165. They've

  1166. thrown away

  1167. the key.

  1168. They're

  1169. turning people

  1170. back from

  1171. trusting in

  1172. Jesus,

  1173. the way,

  1174. the truth,

  1175. and the

  1176. life,

  1177. because they're

  1178. persuaded that

  1179. their way

  1180. is the way

  1181. to God.

  1182. And so

  1183. Jesus,

  1184. it challenges

  1185. this man-made

  1186. religion by

  1187. pointing to

  1188. the importance

  1189. of the heart.

  1190. Remember God's

  1191. word that came

  1192. to Samuel,

  1193. the prophet,

  1194. in the Old

  1195. Testament.

  1196. Man looks at

  1197. the outward

  1198. appearance,

  1199. but God

  1200. looks at

  1201. the heart.

  1202. But we have

  1203. this somber

  1204. reminder

  1205. that Jesus

  1206. can be

  1207. opposed and

  1208. resisted

  1209. even by

  1210. those claiming

  1211. to be

  1212. religious,

  1213. even by

  1214. those who

  1215. are in

  1216. a position

  1217. of religious

  1218. leadership.

  1219. Jesus

  1220. denounces

  1221. them because

  1222. of how far

  1223. short they

  1224. come of

  1225. God's word

  1226. and God's

  1227. way of

  1228. salvation.

  1229. Jesus

  1230. says only

  1231. heart change

  1232. will do.

  1233. But a

  1234. religion based

  1235. on work

  1236. will aim

  1237. to change

  1238. some habits,

  1239. serving to

  1240. keep Jesus

  1241. at arm's

  1242. length.

  1243. Jesus

  1244. would humble

  1245. us by

  1246. showing us

  1247. our sin,

  1248. by showing

  1249. that we

  1250. cannot keep

  1251. God's law,

  1252. we cannot be

  1253. holy by

  1254. ourselves,

  1255. but man-made

  1256. religion,

  1257. tick these

  1258. boxes,

  1259. encourages

  1260. pride in

  1261. our own

  1262. ability.

  1263. It ignores

  1264. God's

  1265. perfect

  1266. holiness,

  1267. and it

  1268. ignores

  1269. human

  1270. sinfulness.

  1271. The question

  1272. to ask

  1273. ourselves is

  1274. how is

  1275. my heart?

  1276. That image

  1277. that Jesus

  1278. had in

  1279. verse 39,

  1280. you Pharisees

  1281. clean the

  1282. outside of

  1283. the cup

  1284. and dish,

  1285. but inside

  1286. you are

  1287. full of

  1288. greed and

  1289. wickedness.

  1290. Have you

  1291. ever had

  1292. this start

  1293. to the

  1294. day?

  1295. You're

  1296. getting ready

  1297. for school

  1298. or you're

  1299. getting ready

  1300. for work

  1301. and you

  1302. get the

  1303. fresh bowl

  1304. out of the

  1305. cupboard or

  1306. out of the

  1307. dishwasher,

  1308. you pour

  1309. your cereal,

  1310. you add

  1311. the milk,

  1312. you get ready

  1313. to tuck in,

  1314. you take

  1315. your first

  1316. spoonful and

  1317. you get that

  1318. disgusting taste

  1319. because you

  1320. realize your

  1321. milk is

  1322. off.

  1323. Not just

  1324. me.

  1325. The glass

  1326. or the

  1327. plate can

  1328. be clean

  1329. but inside

  1330. it's

  1331. disgusting.

  1332. And Jesus

  1333. wants us to

  1334. understand how

  1335. foolish it

  1336. is to

  1337. try and

  1338. merely clean

  1339. up our

  1340. act,

  1341. to try

  1342. harder to

  1343. do better

  1344. when our

  1345. heart is

  1346. still a

  1347. dark mess

  1348. of sin.

  1349. What we

  1350. need is

  1351. not more

  1352. man-made

  1353. religion.

  1354. What we

  1355. need is

  1356. to trust

  1357. and ascend

  1358. from heaven

  1359. redeemer.

  1360. Jesus

  1361. came to

  1362. establish the

  1363. new covenant,

  1364. to establish

  1365. us in

  1366. relationship

  1367. with God

  1368. by his

  1369. death on

  1370. the cross.

  1371. And in

  1372. that new

  1373. covenant,

  1374. as it's

  1375. spoken of

  1376. in the

  1377. Old Testament,

  1378. there is a

  1379. spiritual

  1380. heart transplant

  1381. that takes

  1382. place.

  1383. Ezekiel says

  1384. that God

  1385. will change

  1386. our heart

  1387. of stone

  1388. and give

  1389. us a

  1390. heart of

  1391. flesh.

  1392. So we

  1393. need God's

  1394. grace to

  1395. change us

  1396. from the

  1397. inside out.

  1398. And so we

  1399. must never

  1400. settle for

  1401. man-made

  1402. religion.

  1403. So as we

  1404. follow Jesus

  1405. on this

  1406. journey,

  1407. and as we've

  1408. seen him

  1409. face opposition

  1410. of various

  1411. kinds,

  1412. we're reminded

  1413. opposition is

  1414. real.

  1415. people are

  1416. we willing

  1417. to face

  1418. it for

  1419. Jesus'

  1420. sake.

  1421. Jesus

  1422. will

  1423. suffer it

  1424. for us,

  1425. walking this

  1426. road to

  1427. suffer,

  1428. to die,

  1429. to save

  1430. his people.

  1431. His life is

  1432. one in which

  1433. opposition,

  1434. persecution,

  1435. suffering,

  1436. and ultimately

  1437. death were

  1438. never far

  1439. away.

  1440. The result

  1441. of his

  1442. mission,

  1443. the result

  1444. of his

  1445. sacrifices,

  1446. that we

  1447. receive the

  1448. gift of

  1449. new life,

  1450. an entry

  1451. into God's

  1452. kingdom,

  1453. and the

  1454. guarantee

  1455. of final

  1456. victory and

  1457. glory.

  1458. At the

  1459. same time,

  1460. we identify

  1461. with Jesus,

  1462. being ready

  1463. to suffer.

  1464. For some

  1465. Christians

  1466. today,

  1467. they will

  1468. pay the

  1469. ultimate

  1470. price for

  1471. following

  1472. Jesus,

  1473. but we

  1474. know that

  1475. every follower

  1476. will know

  1477. some

  1478. opposition,

  1479. so will

  1480. we walk

  1481. that road

  1482. day by

  1483. day?

  1484. And how

  1485. do we

  1486. do?

  1487. Or doesn't

  1488. it begin

  1489. by trusting

  1490. in Jesus

  1491. and remembering

  1492. Jesus,

  1493. the one who

  1494. walked this

  1495. road before

  1496. us,

  1497. the one who

  1498. walked this

  1499. road for

  1500. us,

  1501. and the one

  1502. who promises

  1503. that he

  1504. walks that

  1505. road of

  1506. opposition,

  1507. suffering,

  1508. and suffering

  1509. with us.

  1510. And so we

  1511. can trust

  1512. him today

  1513. and every

  1514. day.

  1515. Let's pray

  1516. together.

  1517. together.
