  1. Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would be poured out upon us

  2. with might and power and deep conviction at this time.

  3. We ask, Father, that you would help us in the power of the Holy Spirit

  4. to know that we are in your presence,

  5. that Jesus is the Savior and that he is Lord.

  6. And we ask, Father, that as you draw us into your presence

  7. that we will know that you desire to give us grace,

  8. to establish us and deepen us in your grace and your love.

  9. And help us, Father, to be in your presence,

  10. to receive from you in a worthy manner,

  11. and to respond to you in a worthy manner.

  12. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. We're doing a sermon series entitled Knowing God.

  15. And I guess I'm just going to use this.

  16. I forgot about the mic.

  17. I feel scattered this morning for some reason.

  18. I don't know what it is.

  19. Maybe it's the constant, unrelenting heat.

  20. By the way, kudos to you folks to leave your

  21. cool, air-conditioned domiciles

  22. and to enter the soup and come here.

  23. So way to go.

  24. So we're doing a series called Knowing God.

  25. And on one level, this is a very, very simple session.

  26. Once again, on one hand, it's the idea.

  27. In fact, if you could put up the first point, Claire,

  28. that would be very helpful.

  29. That unless the triune God revealed himself,

  30. you could not know he exists.

  31. Unless the triune God revealed himself,

  32. you could not know he exists.

  33. It's a very simple idea.

  34. But, well, as part of my sermon preparation this week,

  35. on Friday night, with some of my grandchildren,

  36. I watched Angry Birds 2.

  37. I don't like to just study, you know,

  38. Calvin and Aquinas and stuff like that.

  39. Occasionally, you need to prepare for things like this topic

  40. by watching something like Angry Birds 2.

  41. Actually, to be more honest, I was watching Angry Birds 2.

  42. And as I'm watching Angry Birds 2, I thought,

  43. wow, this actually sort of fits in with my sermon this week.

  44. It was more that way.

  45. Now, this isn't much of a spoiler alert.

  46. And I don't know how many of you have watched

  47. any of the Angry Birds movies.

  48. But Angry Birds 2, sort of, I guess,

  49. at the end of Angry Birds 1,

  50. the red bird is the hero of the movie.

  51. And what happens in Angry Birds 2

  52. is that everybody's praising him all the time.

  53. But it turns out that he has a very deep insecurity.

  54. And his deep insecurity goes right from the time

  55. he was a tiny, tiny, tiny little chick.

  56. And as he grew up as a child and as a teenager,

  57. and his great insecurity is that nobody would,

  58. that he'd be all alone.

  59. And it's not so much that he'd be all alone,

  60. because all of us like being alone sometimes,

  61. is that he'd be all alone in the sense

  62. that nobody wanted to know him,

  63. and nobody wanted to have a relationship with him,

  64. that he would live,

  65. he'd been living his life,

  66. in a sense, unknown

  67. and not able to know anybody.

  68. And so he was reveling

  69. in all of this praise,

  70. the fact that people,

  71. sort of,

  72. would notice him.

  73. He was reveling in it.

  74. But really,

  75. as I explain to my grandkids occasionally,

  76. I'm sure much,

  77. I'm sure they just completely and utterly ignored me.

  78. The three-year-old has,

  79. far more interested in the cute little red birds

  80. and other birds up on the screen

  81. than anything her papa's going to say.

  82. But anyway,

  83. the movie goes around upon this particular theme.

  84. It's one of the themes of it.

  85. And in fact,

  86. the movie is touching on

  87. one of the deepest human needs that we have.

  88. Human beings have this profound need

  89. to know and to be known.

  90. Not just to know other people,

  91. but to know and to be known.

  92. One of the,

  93. those of you who struggle with addictions

  94. or alcoholism,

  95. you might or might not realize this about yourself,

  96. but for those of us

  97. who've struggled with these types of things,

  98. one of the problems that alcoholics and addicts have,

  99. and in a sense,

  100. it's a human problem,

  101. but people who struggle with alcoholism or addictions,

  102. they have it at a deeper level,

  103. a more profound level,

  104. a more potentially life-destroying level.

  105. which is they have this deep fear

  106. that if people actually got through the surface,

  107. the force field that they put out,

  108. and got to know them,

  109. that people wouldn't like them.

  110. That in fact,

  111. often alcoholics and addicts

  112. have this belief that

  113. the more you know them,

  114. the less you'll like them.

  115. And yet,

  116. and so what often they do is,

  117. those of us who've struggled with those things,

  118. is you try to numb it in some particular way

  119. with the drugs or the alcoholism.

  120. You're often still consumed with shame

  121. at a deep level about yourself,

  122. but even though you worry about this,

  123. and so you create fronts,

  124. and you do all this other type of stuff,

  125. at the end of the day,

  126. and you might try to numb it,

  127. but you have this deep, deep, deep desire

  128. to know and to be known

  129. that all human beings have.

  130. Just a couple of weeks ago,

  131. Louise and I had supper with somebody,

  132. and the woman's quite a remarkable woman.

  133. For the last 15 years,

  134. she's been one of the primary caregivers

  135. for a youngish woman

  136. who has severe cerebral palsy,

  137. and she's completely and utterly uncommunicative

  138. in terms of being able,

  139. she has no verbal skills whatsoever,

  140. and basically every single thing

  141. that has to be done for her

  142. has to be done,

  143. she can't do anything herself,

  144. everything has to be done for her.

  145. She's completely helpless

  146. and completely and utterly non-verbal.

  147. And this woman has been caring for her,

  148. one of the primary caregivers for this woman

  149. for 15 years.

  150. And I think the young woman's in her early 20s.

  151. But one of the things

  152. that came out very powerfully

  153. as we were talking

  154. is that even though this

  155. very, very, very, very handicapped woman

  156. with severe cerebral palsy

  157. is completely non-verbal,

  158. she can still communicate,

  159. and she still knows,

  160. and in fact, actually,

  161. she really knows this woman,

  162. we'll just call her Sue,

  163. that there's in fact

  164. a deep relationship

  165. between the two of them,

  166. even though she has no words.

  167. Because, you see,

  168. there is this fundamental human desire

  169. to know and to be known.

  170. And so this woman,

  171. her face lights up

  172. with a huge smile

  173. when she sees Sue,

  174. and Sue's face lights up

  175. with a big smile,

  176. and there's obvious ways,

  177. even without having to use words,

  178. that they can have a relationship.

  179. Obviously not the same

  180. as they can with somebody

  181. who can speak

  182. and all of that type of stuff,

  183. but there is this profound relationship

  184. that happens between them,

  185. and for this woman

  186. with the cerebral palsy,

  187. she, like all human beings,

  188. has this desire to know

  189. and to be known.

  190. It's a very, very profound

  191. human need.

  192. So when you hear this idea

  193. that unless the triune God

  194. revealed himself,

  195. you could not know he exists,

  196. often what happens

  197. is we immediately want to go

  198. into all sorts of types

  199. of arguments about this.

  200. There's obviously some problems

  201. with the Christian idea

  202. that what Christians would say

  203. is that the way

  204. that God reveals himself

  205. is primarily

  206. in four different ways.

  207. That on one hand,

  208. he reveals himself

  209. through nature,

  210. and by nature,

  211. it's the creation.

  212. That on one hand,

  213. the conscience in human beings

  214. is a bit of an indicator

  215. that God exists.

  216. The fact that we have minds

  217. is a bit of an indicator

  218. that God exists.

  219. That just the beauty

  220. and the grandeur of nature,

  221. there are all these

  222. different things

  223. in the world outside

  224. and the world inside of us

  225. that in some ways

  226. point to the fact

  227. that there is a triune God

  228. that does actually exist.

  229. And then, of course,

  230. Christians say

  231. it's not just general revelation.

  232. There's what's called

  233. special revelation.

  234. There's the Bible,

  235. the Word of God,

  236. that God has actually

  237. communicated to us

  238. with words,

  239. that every word

  240. ultimately in the Bible,

  241. at least in the original manuscript,

  242. is the exact word

  243. that God wanted to be there

  244. and that God communicates

  245. through his Word.

  246. And then, of course,

  247. it's not just a matter

  248. of general revelation,

  249. the special revelation

  250. of his Word,

  251. that the preeminent way

  252. that he reveals himself

  253. is in the person of his Son,

  254. in Jesus,

  255. in what Jesus did

  256. during his life

  257. and the words that he said

  258. and especially his death

  259. upon the cross

  260. and his resurrection,

  261. that that's the pinnacle

  262. of God's revealing himself

  263. to human beings.

  264. And that it's not just

  265. a matter of us

  266. knowing some stories

  267. and things about Jesus

  268. in the past,

  269. that what happens

  270. is that when God knows us,

  271. when God comes

  272. into a knowledge of us

  273. and we come into

  274. a knowledge of him,

  275. it's mediated

  276. not just by the Word

  277. and by knowing Jesus,

  278. but the Holy Spirit

  279. literally comes

  280. and moves in our lives

  281. and brings,

  282. in a sense,

  283. Jesus home to us,

  284. the Father home to us,

  285. the Holy Spirit

  286. comes into us

  287. and that we know God.

  288. And these are sort of

  289. the basic Christian ideas.

  290. But at the heart of it all

  291. is this fundamental idea

  292. that God wants,

  293. not just fundamental idea,

  294. however we want to talk

  295. or think about this doctrine

  296. of God revealing himself,

  297. it has to always be understood

  298. in the context of God,

  299. of human beings

  300. having this profound desire,

  301. this profound need

  302. to know

  303. and to be known.

  304. You see,

  305. there's an extra mystery

  306. to this,

  307. which we all know,

  308. and it comes up actually

  309. in some of the ways

  310. that people respond

  311. to the idea

  312. of Christian revelation.

  313. I remember

  314. one of my summer jobs,

  315. I had to work

  316. as a painter

  317. in a bell building,

  318. a bell telephone building,

  319. and for the summer

  320. we were working

  321. in repainting

  322. those parts of the building

  323. that most people don't see.

  324. It's where the heating

  325. and the whole pile

  326. of the behind-the-scene guts

  327. of the buildings were

  328. and I was with

  329. this professional painter

  330. and I had to be

  331. his assistant

  332. and we would paint

  333. every day.

  334. And he loved

  335. to talk about the Bible

  336. and loved to talk

  337. about theology

  338. and one of his big complaints

  339. about the Christian faith

  340. is that why doesn't God

  341. just,

  342. if God wants to know me

  343. and he wants me

  344. to know him,

  345. why doesn't it

  346. make it more obvious?

  347. Like,

  348. why doesn't he just show up

  349. and appear to me

  350. if that's what God

  351. actually wants to know?

  352. Well,

  353. there's different versions

  354. of it

  355. and as I would talk to him,

  356. he'd have different ways

  357. of doing it.

  358. But here's the thing

  359. and I'll tell you

  360. some of the things

  361. that he would say

  362. and they're things

  363. which I've heard

  364. from many other people

  365. over the years.

  366. Actually,

  367. every criticism of God,

  368. in a sense,

  369. reveals something about us

  370. and it reveals something

  371. about us,

  372. not just in our relationship

  373. with God,

  374. but actually the fears

  375. and the longings

  376. that we have

  377. and the problems

  378. and idiosyncrasies

  379. we have

  380. even if we want

  381. to know another person.

  382. So, for instance,

  383. why couldn't God

  384. just make some display

  385. every night?

  386. If he really wanted

  387. to be known,

  388. if he really wanted

  389. you to know him

  390. and if he really wanted

  391. you to know him

  392. and he wanted to know you,

  393. why couldn't he make

  394. his existence

  395. more obvious?

  396. So, one of the obvious ways

  397. that he could make it

  398. more obvious

  399. is that, I don't know,

  400. every night

  401. at five minutes

  402. before midnight

  403. and he would do it

  404. in every time zone

  405. from five minutes

  406. before midnight

  407. to midnight,

  408. every night

  409. there'd be a big thing

  410. in the sky

  411. that everybody could see,

  412. the appropriate language,

  413. all of the appropriate languages,

  414. I exist

  415. and I want to know you.

  416. Like, why wouldn't God

  417. do something

  418. very, very obvious

  419. like that

  420. that every human being

  421. every night

  422. if they wanted to know

  423. whether God existed,

  424. they just had to be up

  425. at five minutes to minute

  426. or set their camera

  427. or whatever

  428. and they could see

  429. this sign every night.

  430. Why wouldn't God

  431. do something like that?

  432. If he really wanted

  433. to know you

  434. and to be known by you,

  435. why wouldn't he make

  436. his existence

  437. far more obvious

  438. than general revelation

  439. and the Bible

  440. and Jesus

  441. and the Holy Spirit?

  442. But if you think

  443. about it for a second,

  444. for many, many, many

  445. people in the world,

  446. if God did something

  447. like that,

  448. maybe for many of us

  449. even here,

  450. how would we respond

  451. to it?

  452. The fact of the matter

  453. is that we wouldn't

  454. respond to it

  455. by saying,

  456. good grief,

  457. God really does exist.

  458. I better allow him

  459. to know me

  460. and I'm going to allow him

  461. to speak his word

  462. into my life

  463. and I'm going to love him

  464. and I'm going to adore him.

  465. No.

  466. How would most of us react?

  467. Why is God so showy?

  468. Is he needy?

  469. Like,

  470. why does God have to do

  471. such a big thing

  472. like that every night?

  473. Like,

  474. he's too showy,

  475. he's too pushy,

  476. he's too needy.

  477. Like,

  478. you know,

  479. God shouldn't reveal himself

  480. in that way.

  481. That's how we'd respond.

  482. If,

  483. instead,

  484. God was to try

  485. to be very present

  486. in your consciousness,

  487. in your emotions,

  488. if he decided

  489. to reveal himself

  490. in such a way

  491. that you could never

  492. just evade him,

  493. that you always

  494. immediately felt him

  495. as a very,

  496. very,

  497. very present power

  498. in us,

  499. it probably wouldn't

  500. lead us to want

  501. to worship him.

  502. In fact,

  503. what we would say

  504. is that he's

  505. too intrusive,

  506. too intimidating,

  507. and we would take him

  508. to be more like

  509. a stalker

  510. than a lover.

  511. if God was to provide

  512. a human being

  513. with a knocked-down,

  514. dragged-down,

  515. unrefutable,

  516. logical argument

  517. and set of logical arguments

  518. for his existence,

  519. we would say,

  520. why all this cold logic?

  521. Why no creativity?

  522. Why no love?

  523. If God was to only,

  524. if God was to give you

  525. less evidence

  526. for his existence,

  527. if he was to give you

  528. less evidence

  529. than the Bible

  530. or Jesus,

  531. we'd say,

  532. why doesn't he give us more?

  533. If we were,

  534. if he had only created

  535. one religion

  536. so that we had

  537. absolutely no choice,

  538. we'd either have to follow

  539. the one religion

  540. that he created

  541. and he would stop

  542. all other religions

  543. from existing,

  544. our response

  545. would always be,

  546. I think I could do

  547. something a little bit better.

  548. And if he forced you

  549. to believe in him,

  550. well,

  551. it would be like

  552. when I was a kid

  553. and you'd get wrestling

  554. with a bully

  555. or a bigger kid

  556. and they'd get on top of you,

  557. they'd finally wrestle you down

  558. and they'd say,

  559. I'm not going to let you up

  560. until you say

  561. that I'm better than you.

  562. Well,

  563. you'd fight against him

  564. and fight against him

  565. and fight against him

  566. and eventually you'd say,

  567. okay,

  568. you're better than me

  569. to get him off of you.

  570. But inwardly,

  571. you'd say,

  572. no,

  573. you're not.

  574. you're worse than me.

  575. But you wouldn't say it out loud

  576. because you want to get up.

  577. And that's what would happen

  578. if God was to do something,

  579. was to,

  580. in a sense,

  581. force us to believe in him,

  582. that the fact of the matter is,

  583. is that if he forced us

  584. to try to believe in him,

  585. we'd end up saying,

  586. I don't believe in you.

  587. In fact,

  588. we actually would say

  589. that we hate him.

  590. You see,

  591. here's part of the thing,

  592. is that not only

  593. human beings

  594. have this profound

  595. and deep need

  596. to know

  597. and to be known.

  598. The fact is that

  599. when I described

  600. how addicts

  601. and alcoholics

  602. often

  603. have this

  604. deep fear

  605. within them

  606. that if you really

  607. got to know me,

  608. you wouldn't like me,

  609. you wouldn't love me,

  610. you'd like me less,

  611. that all of us

  612. can resonate with that

  613. to some extent.

  614. that

  615. even for the most

  616. narcissistic amongst us,

  617. there would still

  618. probably be

  619. a tiny bit of a

  620. awkwardness

  621. and embarrassment

  622. about some of the things

  623. that are about us.

  624. But at the same time,

  625. there's something

  626. ornery about us.

  627. There's something about us

  628. that in terms of,

  629. not only we have

  630. this deep desire

  631. to know and to be known,

  632. but we also have this,

  633. in fact,

  634. sometimes we have

  635. just this profound

  636. frustration

  637. that we can't know

  638. and that we can't be known

  639. and sometimes we just

  640. have this profound

  641. frustration

  642. that when we try

  643. to make a good friend

  644. or something like that,

  645. we put our foot

  646. in our mouth,

  647. we trip over

  648. what we want to do,

  649. that we come on

  650. too strong

  651. and force them

  652. and then they think

  653. we're like a stalker

  654. or where we come across

  655. as too needy.

  656. The fact of the matter

  657. is that we both

  658. want to know

  659. and to be known,

  660. but there's part of us

  661. that doesn't really

  662. want to know

  663. and to be known

  664. and there's part of us

  665. that worry that we'll do it

  666. in such a way

  667. that it overwhelms

  668. our freedom

  669. and there's part of us

  670. in such a way

  671. that makes us worry

  672. that we don't want

  673. to give up,

  674. we don't want to surrender

  675. all of ourselves,

  676. we're afraid of being

  677. fully revealing

  678. and that we human beings

  679. are very, very complicated

  680. and the only solution

  681. to most of that stuff

  682. is a love,

  683. a love that is deep

  684. and that is real

  685. and that is unchanging

  686. is,

  687. that's actually connected

  688. to wanting to know

  689. and to be known

  690. is a desire for love

  691. because it's,

  692. for those of us

  693. who've experienced it,

  694. one of the great mysteries

  695. about great love

  696. is that

  697. when we are most in love

  698. we are both,

  699. we feel both most free

  700. and most bound

  701. to the other person

  702. at the same time.

  703. And so we human beings

  704. are a riddle and a mystery

  705. and it's,

  706. if we think about that

  707. a bit more deeply,

  708. it's hard,

  709. actually,

  710. we start to realize

  711. it's actually hard to think

  712. that if God wants to know us

  713. and to be known by us,

  714. that part of the problem

  715. with that ever happening

  716. is in us.

  717. Probably the best text

  718. in the Bible

  719. to help you understand

  720. what it means

  721. for God

  722. to want to know you

  723. and to be known by you

  724. is seen

  725. in Matthew chapter 11

    Matthew 11:25–30

  726. verses 25 to 30,

  727. which is what we'll look at

  728. just very briefly right now.

  729. It was the gospel text

  730. which I read

  731. and it goes like this.

  732. At that time,

  733. Jesus declared,

  734. I thank you,

  735. Father,

  736. Lord of heaven and earth,

  737. that you have hidden

  738. these things

  739. from the wise

  740. and understanding

  741. and revealed them

  742. to little children.

  743. Yes, Father,

  744. for such was

  745. your gracious will.

  746. All things have been handed over

  747. to me by my Father

  748. and no one knows

  749. the Father,

  750. no one knows,

  751. sorry,

  752. all things have been handed over

  753. to me by my Father

  754. and no one knows

  755. the Son except the Father

  756. and no one knows

  757. the Father except the Son

  758. and anyone to whom

  759. the Son chooses

  760. to reveal him.

  761. Now just sort of,

  762. you know,

  763. pause there for a second.

  764. Here's this very interesting

  765. little thing

  766. just up a bit before

  767. that God has hidden

  768. these strings

  769. from the wise

  770. and understanding

  771. but revealed them

  772. to little children.

  773. You see,

  774. the type of knowledge

  775. that we ultimately desire

  776. to know

  777. and to be known

  778. is,

  779. it's not something

  780. that depends upon

  781. our IQ.

  782. Like,

  783. to know,

  784. to try to figure out

  785. quantum mechanics,

  786. to try to figure out

  787. some very,

  788. very complicated

  789. mathematic things

  790. requires a particular

  791. type of mind,

  792. a very,

  793. very high IQ.

  794. People who can figure out

  795. a lot of complicated

  796. engineering things

  797. or accounting things

  798. or are very,

  799. very good

  800. at amassing

  801. a lot of knowledge

  802. about history

  803. or strategy

  804. or technique.

  805. It requires high IQs

  806. and it requires

  807. lots of disciplines

  808. and it's a very,

  809. very small number

  810. of people

  811. and the harder

  812. the knowledge is,

  813. the smaller

  814. the number of people are.

  815. but we know

  816. that that's actually

  817. not the type of knowledge.

  818. I mean,

  819. that's a good knowledge

  820. if you have those,

  821. that type of mind.

  822. Good for you.

  823. Use it wisely

  824. and well to the glory

  825. of God.

  826. But that's,

  827. that the amazing thing is,

  828. is that that type

  829. of personal knowledge

  830. is something

  831. that a person

  832. with severe

  833. cerebral policy

  834. is capable of.

  835. A Down syndrome

  836. child is capable of.

  837. a street person

  838. terribly broken

  839. by their drug addiction

  840. or their alcoholism

  841. or their mental illness

  842. has the potential

  843. to have this type

  844. of personal knowing

  845. and to know.

  846. And so when Jesus says here

  847. that it's been hidden

  848. from the wise

  849. and the learned

  850. but made available

  851. to children,

  852. it's not just talking

  853. about a type of humility

  854. to receive from Jesus

  855. to start to realize

  856. that maybe

  857. if the problem

  858. of knowing

  859. and knowing God

  860. isn't so much

  861. and how God does it

  862. but the problem

  863. is in me.

  864. The problem is

  865. that somehow or another

  866. there's something

  867. broken and angular

  868. and both very,

  869. very desirous

  870. but very,

  871. very fearful

  872. and very,

  873. very confused

  874. and the problem

  875. is in me

  876. that that message

  877. about the little child

  878. is giving us

  879. a bit of a clue

  880. that maybe we need

  881. to be the,

  882. to understand

  883. that we need

  884. to be the ones

  885. to sort of stop

  886. for a second

  887. and let God be God

  888. and for him

  889. to do something

  890. to reveal himself to us

  891. but it's also

  892. letting us know

  893. that the type

  894. of knowing,

  895. this type

  896. of personal knowing,

  897. this type of love

  898. that is ultimately

  899. what God wants

  900. to communicate to us

  901. is something

  902. that in fact

  903. even children

  904. are capable of,

  905. that all human beings

  906. are capable of.

  907. It's not just something

  908. for the intellectual

  909. or the IQ elite.

  910. It's something

  911. which is just

  912. deeply human

  913. and is available

  914. from everything

  915. from the tiniest

  916. little baby

  917. to the most

  918. handicapped individual

  919. to the most broken

  920. by illness

  921. or addictions

  922. to the most brilliant

  923. in theory

  924. all are capable

  925. of having this

  926. type of knowing

  927. and known

  928. and be known

  929. and which is all

  930. characterized by love.

  931. And then it's further

  932. when Jesus said

  933. in verse 27

  934. all things have been

  935. handed over

  936. to be my,

  937. my father

  938. and no one knows

  939. the son except the father

  940. and no one knows

  941. the father except the son

  942. and anyone to whom

  943. the son chooses

  944. to reveal him.

  945. This is just this doctrine

  946. which I said

  947. at the beginning

  948. that unless the triune God

  949. wants to reveal himself

  950. we could never

  951. possibly know him.

  952. And Jesus is saying

  953. that, you know,

  954. at the end of the day

  955. all of the Bible

  956. all of general revelation

  957. all of the Bible

  958. and by general revelation

  959. that includes the fact

  960. that if you start

  961. to actually analyze

  962. and look at your heart

  963. and if you realize

  964. that there's this desire

  965. to know

  966. this fear of being known

  967. this desire for love

  968. this fear of being loved

  969. this, this,

  970. these false starts

  971. these successes

  972. and all of this complication

  973. and that that's pointing

  974. to that there's some type

  975. of a riddle about you

  976. that unless God comes in

  977. in a way

  978. that respects your freedom

  979. and respects your integrity

  980. and your dignity

  981. and comes in

  982. and offers himself

  983. in a way

  984. that you can receive

  985. and does what you cannot

  986. do for yourself

  987. that you cannot even

  988. possibly know him

  989. but that all,

  990. all of the general revelation

  991. and special revelation

  992. of the Bible

  993. all of it culminates

  994. in the person of Jesus.

  995. in his life

  996. and his death

  997. and his resurrection

  998. that he is going

  999. to be the one

  1000. that makes it possible

  1001. for human beings

  1002. like you and me

  1003. to know God

1004. and to be known by him

1005. for him to reveal himself.

  1006. And it's very,

  1007. very interesting

  1008. because it says

  1009. all things have been

  1010. handed over to me

  1011. by my father

  1012. and no one knows

  1013. the father

  1014. and no one knows

1015. the son except the father

  1016. and no one knows

1017. the father except the son

  1018. and anyone to whom

  1019. the son chooses

  1020. to reveal him

1021. and then we sort of

  1022. have this pause.

  1023. Okay, now he's going

  1024. to say that

  1025. only people who are

  1026. same-sex attracted

  1027. he's going to reveal

  1028. himself to

  1029. or only those

  1030. who are other-sex attracted

  1031. he's going to reveal

  1032. himself to

  1033. or only people

  1034. who are from Africa

  1035. or only people

  1036. from a wealthy neighborhood

  1037. or only people

  1038. from Asia

  1039. or he's only going

  1040. to talk about

  1041. good people

  1042. or he's only going

  1043. to reveal himself

  1044. to special people

  1045. he's only going

  1046. to reveal himself

  1047. to people

  1048. who have positive

  1049. self-regard

  1050. or a good sense

  1051. a good control

  1052. in their life

  1053. and are successful

  1054. or he's only going

  1055. to reveal himself

1056. to those who are broken

  1057. in particular ways

  1058. in whatever ways

1059. that we try to spin it

1060. as if all of a sudden

  1061. there's going to be

1062. some type of a criteria

  1063. by which Jesus

  1064. is going to reveal

  1065. the father to us

  1066. this all comes out

1067. but in the very same breath

  1068. that he says

  1069. that no one knows

  1070. the father

  1071. except the son

  1072. and anyone

  1073. to whom the son

  1074. chooses to reveal him

  1075. his very next words

  1076. are come to me

  1077. all who labor

  1078. and are heavy laden

1079. and I will give you rest

  1080. are you same-sex attracted

  1081. come to me

  1082. all who labor

  1083. and are heavy laden

  1084. are you heterosexual

  1085. come to me

  1086. all who labor

  1087. and are heavy laden

  1088. are you watching this

  1089. in Africa

  1090. or in Singapore

  1091. or in South America

  1092. or in Rockcliffe Park

  1093. or in Ledbury

  1094. come to me

  1095. all who labor

  1096. and are heavy laden

1097. and I will give you rest

1098. take my yoke upon you

  1099. and learn from me

  1100. for I am gentle

  1101. and lowly in heart

1102. and you will find rest

  1103. for your souls

  1104. for my yoke

  1105. and my burden

  1106. is light

  1107. come to me

  1108. all who labor

  1109. and are heavy laden

1110. and I will give you rest

1111. take my yoke upon you

  1112. and learn from me

  1113. for I am gentle

  1114. and lowly in heart

1115. and you will find rest

  1116. for your souls

  1117. for my yoke

  1118. is easy

  1119. and my burden

  1120. is light

  1121. see the triune God

  1122. reveals himself

  1123. to be known

  1124. and to know you

1125. in a covenant of love

  1126. that's the second point

  1127. the triune God

  1128. reveals himself

  1129. to be known

  1130. and to know you

1131. in a covenant of love

1132. not in a one night stand

  1133. not in a fling

  1134. not in an affair

1135. but in a covenant of love

  1136. that he desires

  1137. to reveal himself

  1138. to you

1139. so that you will know him

1140. and he will know you

1141. and then that knowing of you

  1142. and knowing of him

  1143. can be something

  1144. that will continue

  1145. and deepen

  1146. there obviously

  1147. at your end

1148. there can be step backs

  1149. and stepping away

  1150. and confusion

1151. and all of those types

  1152. of things

  1153. but that he

  1154. wants to do this

  1155. to know you

1156. and to be known by you

  1157. in a covenant

  1158. of deep love

  1159. that respects your freedom

  1160. and who you are

  1161. I mean

  1162. actually if

  1163. here we'll just say

  1164. one more thing

  1165. maybe one more story

1166. and then we'll bring this

  1167. to a close

1168. if you could put up

  1169. the third point

  1170. the person words

  1171. and works

  1172. a work of Jesus

  1173. reveals the triune God

  1174. and redeems all

  1175. who receive him

  1176. it's a very simple point

  1177. but here's the story

  1178. that shows the depth

1179. the depth of his love

1180. if you turn in your Bibles

  1181. to Luke chapter 23

    Luke 23:35–43

  1182. verses 35 to 43

  1183. Luke 23 verses 35 to 43

    Luke 23:35–43

1184. we have this very wonderful story

  1185. only recorded by Luke

  1186. obviously based on

  1187. eyewitness testimony

1188. of one of the things

  1189. that happens

  1190. when Jesus is hanging

  1191. on the cross

  1192. and here's how

  1193. the story goes

  1194. and the people

  1195. stood by watching

  1196. but the ruler

  1197. scoffed at him

  1198. saying

  1199. he saved others

  1200. let him save himself

1201. if he is the Christ of God

  1202. his chosen one

  1203. in other words

  1204. and then the soldiers

  1205. also mocked him

  1206. coming up

  1207. and offering him

  1208. sour wine

  1209. and saying

1210. if you are the king

  1211. of the Jews

  1212. save yourself

  1213. and there was also

  1214. an inscription

  1215. over him

  1216. this is the king

  1217. of the Jews

1218. and one of the criminals

  1219. who were hanged

  1220. railed at him

  1221. saying

1222. are you not the Christ

  1223. save yourself

  1224. and us

  1225. you see

  1226. in other words

  1227. what they wanted

  1228. was they wanted

  1229. Jesus to reveal himself

1230. in a type of way

  1231. of power

1232. that if he had done it

  1233. it would be like

  1234. knowing your bank statements

1235. it would be that type

  1236. of knowledge

  1237. it would be like

  1238. seeing the sign

  1239. in the sky

  1240. that even after you

  1241. saw the sign

  1242. in the sky

  1243. of God revealing

  1244. himself like that

  1245. every day

  1246. you'd still just say

  1247. well that's just

  1248. an interesting fact

  1249. of nature

  1250. it's not a personal

  1251. type of knowing

  1252. you see

  1253. at the heart

  1254. of all love

  1255. all love

  1256. is always going

  1257. to have to involve

  1258. sacrifice

  1259. after sacrifice

  1260. a giving of yourself

1261. and a giving of yourself

  1262. and even a type

  1263. of sacrifice

  1264. to receive love

  1265. a sacrifice

  1266. of setting aside

  1267. your pride

1268. that you can do this

  1269. for yourself

  1270. to receive the gift

  1271. of love

  1272. from the other person

  1273. to not think

  1274. that when

  1275. a young child

  1276. tells you a joke

  1277. that you could tell

  1278. the joke better

  1279. but to sacrifice

  1280. those desires

  1281. of pride

  1282. and arrogance

  1283. and to just

  1284. take great delight

  1285. that that young child

  1286. would like to have

  1287. a conversation

  1288. with you

  1289. and that they

  1290. would share

  1291. no matter how

  1292. poorly told

  1293. that joke

  1294. you see

  1295. it's the proud

  1296. and the arrogant

  1297. and the desire

  1298. for power

  1299. the opposite

  1300. of what Jesus

  1301. was talking about

  1302. in Matthew chapter 11

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  1303. that keeps us

  1304. from knowing

  1305. and being known

  1306. it's yet another

  1307. reason why he said

  1308. that unless you're

  1309. like a little child

  1310. that it's little children

1311. that he reveals it to

  1312. it's that type

  1313. of humility

  1314. it's that type

  1315. of childlike love

  1316. that both

  1317. to know another person

  1318. you're going to have

  1319. to make sacrifices

  1320. for the other person

  1321. and that even

  1322. in receiving love

  1323. you need to make

  1324. sacrifices

  1325. that put to death

  1326. your pride

1327. to be able to receive

  1328. that love

  1329. and that affection

  1330. from the other person

1331. and so here we see

  1332. that even as Jesus

1333. is dying upon the cross

  1334. the demands

  1335. of people

  1336. who are crucifying him

  1337. and even sharing

  1338. his death

  1339. is for him

  1340. to reveal himself

  1341. in a way

  1342. which is merely

  1343. of power

  1344. which would merely

  1345. be that we know

  1346. something about him

  1347. but given that God

  1348. wants to reveal himself

  1349. in such a way

1350. that you can know him

1351. and be known by him

1352. in a covenant of love

1353. and given that you're worried

  1354. and should be

1355. that he's going to do

  1356. something to overwhelm

  1357. your freedom

  1358. and also just worried

  1359. about your own inability

  1360. to really love

  1361. that even your best

  1362. relationships of love

1363. on this side of the grave

  1364. are often filled

  1365. with things

  1366. that constantly

  1367. need forgiveness

  1368. and other types

  1369. of intervention

  1370. of grace

  1371. to make up

  1372. for your mistakes

  1373. and your inabilities

  1374. and your weak

  1375. and your lacks

  1376. and your brokenness

  1377. and the things

  1378. that you do

  1379. that are just wrong

1380. and that what we really need

  1381. is on one hand

  1382. within the context

1383. of a covenant of love

  1384. is by respecting

  1385. our freedom

  1386. and knowing us

  1387. as we really are

  1388. with nothing left out

  1389. every single wart

  1390. every single bad thing

  1391. every shame

  1392. every excellence

  1393. to have that type

  1394. of perfect knowledge

1395. which is shown to us

  1396. in a sacrificial love

  1397. and God doing

  1398. what we cannot do

  1399. but not overwhelming

  1400. our freedom

1401. but respecting who we are

1402. and still an act of love

  1403. that's what we need

  1404. from God

1405. and we can only receive it

  1406. if we put down

  1407. our weapons

  1408. and just say

  1409. God I don't know

  1410. what on earth

  1411. you could do

  1412. with a mess

  1413. a person like me

  1414. and that's where

  1415. the next part

  1416. of the story

  1417. is so powerful

  1418. verse 40

  1419. but the other

  1420. rebuked him

  1421. saying

1422. do you not fear God

  1423. since you are under

  1424. the same sentence

  1425. of condemnation

  1426. and we indeed

  1427. justly

  1428. for we are receiving

  1429. the due reward

  1430. of our deeds

  1431. but this man

  1432. has done nothing wrong

  1433. and then he turns

  1434. to Jesus

  1435. now Jesus knows

  1436. that this guy

1437. is not a good guy

  1438. his

  1439. this guy

  1440. has already

  1441. just publicly

  1442. confessed

  1443. that he deserves

  1444. to die

  1445. whatever he did

  1446. that was wrong

  1447. it has led him

  1448. to this point

  1449. in his life

  1450. that he deserves

  1451. to die

  1452. and there is

  1453. nothing he can do

  1454. to fix that

  1455. he can't

  1456. all of a sudden

  1457. say I'm going to

  1458. learn how to do

  1459. the Hail Marys

  1460. I'm going to learn

  1461. how to use

1462. the book of Common Prayer

  1463. I'm going to have

  1464. a charismatic experience

  1465. I'm going to start

1466. to clean up my act

  1467. I'm going to stop

  1468. drinking

  1469. I'm going to stop

  1470. doing drugs

  1471. I'm going to stop

  1472. doing all these

  1473. you know all the

  1474. affairs I had

  1475. I'm going to start

  1476. making some money

  1477. I'm going to get

  1478. my life in control

  1479. I'm going to go

  1480. he can do nothing

  1481. he's hanging up

  1482. there on a cross

  1483. and he's doomed

  1484. and he turns

  1485. to Jesus

  1486. and says

  1487. Jesus remember me

  1488. when you come

  1489. into your kingdom

  1490. he's like this

  1491. other famous

  1492. story in the gospel

  1493. where Jesus says

  1494. you know the

  1495. the proud religious

  1496. person says

  1497. look at me

  1498. I do this

  1499. I do this

  1500. I do this

  1501. boom boom boom

  1502. boom boom boom

  1503. boom boom

  1504. alpha male

  1505. and then there's

  1506. other person

  1507. who's lived

  1508. a completely

  1509. disreputable life

  1510. and all he does

  1511. is stand at the

  1512. back and says

  1513. have mercy upon me

  1514. a sinner

  1515. doesn't even look

  1516. his eyes to heaven

  1517. and Jesus says

  1518. the man who was

  1519. at the back

  1520. he's the one

  1521. who wants home

  1522. forgiven

  1523. not the guy

  1524. who just parades

  1525. all of his things

  1526. and so this guy

  1527. says Jesus

  1528. remember me

  1529. when you come

  1530. into your kingdom

  1531. I mean he sees

  1532. with the eyes

  1533. of faith

  1534. that Jesus

  1535. actually is

  1536. the king of kings

  1537. the king of love

  1538. the king of beauty

  1539. the king of peace

  1540. that his kingdom

  1541. is the one

  1542. that is characterized

  1543. as what I call

  1544. the covenant

  1545. of love

  1546. that's what the

  1547. bible calls it

  1548. he literally

  1549. can say to Jesus

  1550. nothing in my hands

  1551. I bring

  1552. simply to you

  1553. I cling

  1554. and Jesus'

  1555. response to him

  1556. is truly

  1557. I say

  1558. to you

  1559. today

  1560. you will be

  1561. with me

  1562. in paradise

  1563. today

  1564. you will be

  1565. with me

  1566. in paradise

  1567. you see

  1568. the triune God

  1569. reveals himself

  1570. to be known

  1571. and to know you

  1572. in a covenant

  1573. of love

  1574. Jesus knows

  1575. every single thing

  1576. about you

  1577. when he dies

  1578. for you

  1579. and still he dies

1580. for you out of love

  1581. and he doesn't

  1582. expect you

  1583. to fix yourself

  1584. to be with him

  1585. and to know him

  1586. he has to do

  1587. it all

  1588. and he just

  1589. asks for you

  1590. to stand

  1591. and come into

  1592. his presence

  1593. and humbly

  1594. say

  1595. Jesus take me

  1596. as your

  1597. as your own

  1598. be my savior

  1599. and be my lord

  1600. hard for me

  1601. to believe

  1602. that your desire

  1603. is to know me

  1604. in a covenant

  1605. of love

  1606. and to have me

  1607. know you

  1608. in a covenant

  1609. of love

  1610. that begins

  1611. on this side

  1612. of the grave

  1613. and will go

  1614. to all eternity

  1615. but just as you

  1616. said to the thief

  1617. on the cross

1618. today I say to you

  1619. today you will be

  1620. with me in paradise

  1621. I claim that

  1622. prayer promise

  1623. is my own

  1624. that I trust

  1625. that what you did

  1626. on the cross

  1627. is good enough

1628. to make me your own

  1629. and your covenant

  1630. of love for all

  1631. eternity

  1632. that you can do

  1633. what I cannot do

  1634. you can come

  1635. into me

  1636. and make your

  1637. home in me

  1638. and fit me

  1639. for heaven

  1640. and be my

  1641. hope for glory

  1642. reveal yourself

  1643. to me

  1644. and start to

  1645. so free me up

  1646. as I think

  1647. upon your death

  1648. upon the cross

  1649. and your great

  1650. love for me

  1651. that I can start

  1652. to reveal myself

  1653. to you

  1654. knowing that

  1655. you will not

  1656. be ashamed

  1657. or turn your face

  1658. away in disgust

  1659. at anything

  1660. I share with you

  1661. but that your

  1662. response will

  1663. always be to me

  1664. child

  1665. child

  1666. child

  1667. let me know

  1668. you more

  1669. please come

  1670. higher into me

  1671. and know me

  1672. more

  1673. invite you all

  1674. to stand

  1675. let's bow our

  1676. heads in prayer

  1677. father

  1678. we give you

  1679. thanks and

  1680. praise

  1681. that you

  1682. desire to

  1683. know us

  1684. in a covenant

  1685. of love

  1686. and we give

  1687. you thanks

  1688. and praise

  1689. that when we

  1690. put our

  1691. faith and

  1692. trust in

  1693. Jesus

  1694. we enter

  1695. into that

  1696. covenant

  1697. of love

  1698. with you

  1699. that we

  1700. are in

  1701. Jesus

  1702. and he

  1703. is in

  1704. us

  1705. that the

  1706. Holy Spirit

  1707. brings us

  1708. into that

  1709. covenant

  1710. of love

  1711. and that

  1712. you will

  1713. never let

  1714. us go

  1715. and we

  1716. give you

  1717. thanks and

  1718. praise

  1719. father

  1720. that you

  1721. who are

  1722. infinite

  1723. Lord

  1724. Jesus

  1725. Christ

  1726. you

  1727. who are

  1728. infinite

  1729. Holy Spirit

  1730. you

  1731. who are

  1732. infinite

  1733. that your

  1734. love is

  1735. infinite

  1736. your goodness

  1737. and your

  1738. beauty

  1739. is infinite

  1740. and that

  1741. our small

  1742. beginning

  1743. steps of

  1744. knowing you

  1745. and being

  1746. known by

  1747. you on

  1748. this side

  1749. of the

  1750. grave

  1751. can

  1752. continue

  1753. on and

  1754. on and

  1755. on into

  1756. the depths

  1757. of eternity

  1758. and never

  1759. be exhausted

  1760. because you

  1761. are the

  1762. infinite

  1763. beauty

  1764. and infinite

  1765. goodness

  1766. and infinite

  1767. love

  1768. and we

  1769. give you

  1770. thanks and

  1771. praise that

  1772. you have

  1773. made us

  1774. for yourself

  1775. as Augustine

  1776. said

  1777. and that

  1778. it is only

  1779. in you

  1780. that our

  1781. hearts begin

  1782. to know

  1783. the rest

  1784. the rest

  1785. the wholeness

  1786. and completeness

  1787. that you desire

  1788. for your

  1789. children

  1790. for all

  1791. eternity

  1792. so father

  1793. we give you

  1794. thanks and

  1795. praise

  1796. that you

  1797. are god

  1798. that jesus

  1799. is our

  1800. savior

  1801. that the

  1802. holy spirit

  1803. brings us

  1804. to jesus

  1805. and brings

  1806. us to

  1807. you

  1808. and we

  1809. ask that

  1810. you would

  1811. do your

  1812. work more

  1813. and more

  1814. in us

  1815. today

  1816. to the

  1817. end

  1818. and all

  1819. this we

  1820. ask in the

  1821. name of

  1822. jesus your

  1823. son and

  1824. our savior

  1825. amen

  1826. for

  1827. your

  1828. family

  1829. one

  1830. one

  1831. one

  1832. one

  1833. two

  1834. three

  1835. one

  1836. one

  1837. one
