  1. The scripture reading comes from Matthew chapter 1. Please follow along on the screen, the bulletin, or on your Bible.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  2. Starting in verse 18, we read,

  3. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  4. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  5. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

  6. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

  7. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  8. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

  9. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  10. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  11. When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

  12. He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son.

  13. And he called his name Jesus.

  14. This is the word of God.

  15. Thank you so much, Betty.

  16. Welcome. Merry Christmas, everybody.

  17. Oh, that was about the best ever. That's great.

  18. My name is Chris. I'm one of the leaders here at Watermark.

  19. Just really, really excited to see you, if it's your first time, if it's your thousandth time.

  20. I'm particularly excited to see what people wear at Christmastime,

  21. because I've seen some very exciting colors going on.

  22. I looked in my wardrobe.

  23. The only red thing I could find was a Liverpool football shirt,

  24. so I thought that may not be appropriate.

  25. Let me just pray for us as we get into God's word.

  26. Father, I thank you for Christmas.

  27. Thank you that today, in all the presents and all the stuff, all the food and the friends and the time together,

  28. Lord, I thank you that the central, key focus of everything is you.

  29. Thank you, Jesus.

  30. Open our hearts to hear your word, we pray.

  31. In Jesus' name.

  32. Amen.

  33. Great.

  34. We've got the kids in, so be prepared for a little bit of chaos,

  35. but that's fine, because we're a family together.

  36. Christmas, do you know, actually didn't start as a celebration.

  37. There were no lights.

  38. There was no turkey.

  39. There was no presents.

  40. There was actually just confusion and hurt and darkness.

  41. Christmas.

  42. Because, you know, Christmas actually started as a breakup.

  43. They were wedding planning.

  44. You know, they'd got the dress.

  45. They'd ordered the caterers.

  46. They'd sent out the invites.

  47. And then one day, Mary, who's this young Jewish peasant girl,

  48. who's probably around 12 years old,

  49. comes to her fiancé, Joseph,

  50. and says,

  51. Joe,

  52. I'm pregnant.

  53. And Joe knew that he wasn't the father.

  54. And Mary continued that,

  55. it's an angel who came to me and said,

  56. the baby is from the Holy Spirit.

  57. And Joseph, at that point, doesn't go,

  58. well, we believe all kinds of unscientific things these days,

  59. so that's fine.

  60. I mean, Holy Spirit conception, no problem.

  61. No, he doesn't.

  62. He goes,

  63. Holy Spirit.

  64. Right.

  65. Right.

  66. That's a good one.

  67. And you see, at that point,

  68. at that moment,

  69. all of his plans,

  70. all of his trust in her,

  71. all of his dreams for a family were shattered.

  72. And I can imagine him lying on his bed at night going,

  73. what have I done to deserve this?

  74. Like, why me?

  75. Because Joseph is a good guy.

  76. I mean, he loves her.

  77. You can see from the passage,

  78. he loves her.

  79. And it says,

  80. even with this news,

  81. he doesn't want to shame her publicly.

  82. So he comes up with his own kind of solution

  83. of how to fix this mess,

  84. which is like,

  85. okay,

  86. let's just do a kind of low-key,

  87. quiet divorce.

  88. Let's not kind of make this public.

  89. Let's make this the best of what we can.

  90. But Joseph is feeling alone and lost.

  91. Mary,

  92. what do you think she's going through?

  93. I mean,

  94. she'd had this joy at the idea of being pregnant,

  95. and now it's been shattered by the rejection from her fiancé,

  96. and her life,

  97. her reputation,

  98. were on the line.

  99. Because in first century Jewish culture,

  100. single mothers were not treated well.

  101. And for her,

  102. what was God up to?

  103. What is he doing?

  104. Where is he even in the midst of this?

  105. Both of them confused.

  106. Both of them alone with their struggle,

  107. with their shame,

  108. with all the things that are going on,

  109. on the verge of breakup,

  110. and it's not their fault at all.

  111. It's not their fault.

  112. And this is how Christmas begins.

  113. And so I don't know for you,

  114. many of you may have had an amazing 2021,

  115. but I know some of you,

  116. it's been a hard 2021.

  117. It's been one where maybe you're going,

  118. life doesn't make sense sometimes.

  119. Whether that's COVID,

  120. whether that's a loss of loved ones,

  121. whether that's sickness,

  122. or a whole lot of other things.

  123. I know for many people,

  124. Christmas can be a hard time.

  125. But you know,

  126. Christmas is actually all about

  127. how God turns darkness into light.

  128. How God takes tragedy,

  129. and turns it into glory.

  130. You see,

  131. it's how God turns expectations

  132. that we have,

  133. and the way we think life should work,

  134. upside down.

  135. And that's what God always does

  136. for everyone who trusts in him.

  137. And the thing is,

  138. the Mary and Joseph story in this passage,

  139. actually come in the context

  140. of another breakup,

  141. which is a breakup

  142. which goes all the way back

  143. right to the beginning of the Bible.

  144. Well,

  145. the breakup

  146. that is the backdrop

  147. for this story.

  148. You see,

  149. the Bible story says

  150. that you and I were made

  151. for a relationship

  152. with the creator God

  153. that we saw Annabelle

  154. and Justin

  155. so well talk about.

  156. And that relationship

  157. is that when we're with him,

  158. in right relationship with him,

  159. then we're home.

  160. And home is where you're safe,

  161. you're secure,

  162. you're known,

  163. and you're loved.

  164. You've got nothing to hide.

  165. You can be who you are,

  166. you can be yourself

  167. because you are safe.

  168. And the story goes,

  169. if you know the story

  170. and you've been in Watermark a while,

  171. but actually on page three

  172. of the Bible,

  173. everything goes wrong

  174. because it's not that God

  175. who walks out on us,

  176. but actually we walk out on him.

  177. We want to live life our way,

  178. do things according to our plans,

  179. in our own self-reliant strength.

  180. And that's where everything goes wrong.

  181. You see,

  182. my son Etienne,

  183. who's two years old,

  184. about a month ago,

  185. we were in the lift in my building

  186. and we were coming home

  187. and I was holding his hand

  188. just as the lift doors were opening

  189. and I was just getting out

  190. and then he lets go of my hand

  191. and he starts pushing me

  192. out of the lift.

  193. Lovely son.

  194. And if he'd have managed to do that,

  195. you know,

  196. the doors would have shut

  197. and I think he'd have enjoyed his freedom

  198. for just a few seconds probably.

  199. You know,

  200. he'd have joined being there

  201. and not having me interfering in his life

  202. in any kind of way.

  203. He could do what he wants,

  204. but at some point,

  205. and I think for him

  206. it would come pretty quick,

  207. he'd realize that his little fingers

  208. couldn't reach the buttons

  209. for the open lift.

  210. And you see,

  211. the very freedom

  212. that he thought he had without me

  213. had actually become a prison

  214. of his own making.

  215. Because he couldn't get out

  216. and when you're in that place,

  217. that's a place of stress,

  218. that's a place of anxiety,

  219. that's a place where you,

  220. it's all on you

  221. to try and fix this situation.

  222. Because that's what it is

  223. to be alone and away from home.

  224. And that's often what we actually do

  225. with God in our lives.

  226. We say,

  227. I'll call you when I need you,

  228. but let me live my life,

  229. my career,

  230. my ambitions,

  231. my dreams by myself

  232. and it's all on us

  233. to try and make it happen.

  234. And that's actually at the heart

  235. of what the Bible calls sin.

  236. Pushing God out

  237. so I can be on the throne,

  238. I can be in control of my life.

  239. And this is exemplified

  240. 700 years before this passage.

  241. A prophet called Isaiah

  242. comes to a Jewish king called Ahaz.

  243. And this guy Ahaz,

  244. he's in a tough spot

  245. because his allies

  246. have just turned on him

  247. to try and force his hand

  248. to join them

  249. in resisting the big superpower

  250. of the time

  251. who's called Assyria.

  252. And he's besieged

  253. by this superior army.

  254. His back is against the wall.

  255. It doesn't look good at all.

  256. His whole kingdom,

  257. his life,

  258. his reputation,

  259. everything is on the line.

  260. Tragedy is beckoning.

  261. And this prophet Isaiah

  262. comes to him

  263. and says,

  264. hey listen,

  265. Ahaz,

  266. don't trust in your own wisdom.

  267. Trust what God says to you.

  268. And he's got this situation.

  269. It looks bad,

  270. but don't worry,

  271. he's got it.

  272. And do you know what Ahaz says?

  273. Ahaz says,

  274. sorry,

  275. Isaiah says,

  276. he'll give you a sign.

  277. And the sign will be this,

  278. a virgin will conceive

  279. and bear a son

  280. and you shall call his name

  281. Emmanuel.

  282. And what does Ahaz do?

  283. Well,

  284. like a male driver

  285. who's lost

  286. and won't admit it,

  287. he says,

  288. I'm going to sort this out myself,

  289. thank you very much.

  290. I don't need God's help.

  291. Let me deal with it.

  292. And do you know what happens?

  293. That decision

  294. leads to breakup.

  295. It leads to the end

  296. of his kingdom.

  297. It leads to the exiling

  298. of his people

  299. away from the home

  300. of where God was

  301. and where they were meant

  302. to be safe,

  303. secure,

  304. known and loved.

  305. And unlike Mary and Joseph,

  306. this breakup

  307. with God

  308. and with their land

  309. and with the people,

  310. that was entirely

  311. their choice.

  312. Entirely their choice.

  313. And the amazing thing is,

  314. though,

  315. that actually

  316. two chapters

  317. later on

  318. from this verse,

  319. in the midst

  320. of the chaos

  321. of what's going on,

  322. Isaiah comes

  323. with another promise.

  324. He says,

  325. Emmanuel is still coming.

  326. The promise

  327. that in the darkness

  328. light will come

  329. and he says this,

  330. he says,

  331. unto us

  332. a child is born.

  333. Unto us

  334. a son is given

  335. and the government

  336. will be on his shoulders.

  337. You see,

  338. what he was saying is,

  339. in spite of the chaos,

  340. there is a king

  341. who's coming.

  342. There is one

  343. who's coming

  344. to bring you home again.

  345. And the Jewish people

  346. for years

  347. were looking forward

  348. to this Messiah

  349. figure to come.

  350. They were looking

  351. forward to that,

  352. but they felt

  353. lost,

  354. alone,

  355. confused,

  356. and wondering

  357. in their current

  358. circumstances,

  359. where was God

  360. in the midst

  361. of this?

  362. Well,

  363. for many of us,

  364. some of us

  365. may see that God

  366. as absent.

  367. Maybe that's because

  368. you don't believe

  369. in a God

  370. or maybe it's because

  371. you,

  372. like Mary and Joseph,

  373. look at your current

  374. circumstances

  375. and go,

  376. well,

  377. if God really cared,

  378. then he wouldn't

  379. allow me to be here.

  380. And so,

  381. you end up feeling

  382. like you've got

  383. to carry life

  384. on your own shoulders.

  385. Maybe he's absent.

  386. Or maybe some of us

  387. are like Ahaz,

  388. that we see that

  389. maybe God comes

  390. to be with us,

  391. but actually that's

  392. bad news because

  393. you think he's there

  394. to give you a whole

  395. load of religious rules.

  396. You think he's there

  397. to take control

  398. of your life

  399. and just disturb you

  400. and ruin you

  401. and make you feel

  402. kind of guilty

  403. about all the stuff

  404. that you're doing

  405. or you're not doing enough.

  406. And maybe like a,

  407. you know,

  408. like a teenager

  409. whose parents say,

  410. hey,

  411. can I come and join you

  412. at your friend's

  413. Christmas party?

  414. And they go,

  415. no way,

  416. you're going to ruin

  417. everything.

  418. That's deep down

  419. how we actually

  420. think about God.

  421. Or maybe,

  422. we don't just see him

  423. as absent,

  424. maybe we don't see him

  425. as just with us

  426. but bad news,

  427. but maybe he's with us

  428. as like a distant uncle,

  429. a kind of non-interfering

  430. kind of deity

  431. who sends you

  432. an occasional Christmas card.

  433. You can ask him

  434. occasional things,

  435. but actually,

  436. he just lets you

  437. live life

  438. the way you want

  439. to live it.

  440. Maybe that's your

  441. view of God.

  442. But the Christmas story

  443. here tells us

  444. that each of those

  445. views are wrong.

  446. This passage tells us

  447. that whether we feel

  448. the suffering,

  449. the pain,

  450. like Mary and Joseph do,

  451. or whether we are

  452. the cause of suffering

  453. and pain,

  454. like Ahaz is,

  455. for all of us,

  456. the reality is

  457. we're away from home

  458. without God.

  459. I showed a video

  460. a few years ago,

  461. I'm going to show it again

  462. in Watermark.

  463. It's from the movie

  464. Home Alone.

  465. Who's seen Home Alone?

  466. Okay, pretty good.

  467. I spoke to Tess yesterday

  468. and she was about

  469. the only person

  470. in the Christmas Eve service.

  471. So, there's got to be

  472. a viewing for those of you

  473. who haven't seen it,

  474. like after the service.

  475. If you haven't seen it,

  476. okay, spoiler alert,

  477. Kevin,

  478. who is a young boy

  479. played by Macaulay Culkin,

  480. has wished that his family

  481. would disappear

  482. after having a fight

  483. with his family.

  484. The next day,

  485. he finds out

  486. they've gone on holiday

  487. and they've forgotten

  488. about him

  489. and he's left alone

  490. at Christmas time.

  491. And some burglars

  492. realize that he's alone

  493. and then they plan

  494. to break in.

  495. And here's one of the things

  496. that Kevin does.

  497. Great, thank you.

  498. I don't know how he managed

  499. to fix all that stuff up

  500. in like less than 24 hours,

  501. but kids are smart these days.

  502. You see,

  503. why do I show that to us?

  504. I think that actually

  505. gives a picture

  506. of what life is like

  507. when we're away from God.

  508. Because when you're away

  509. from home

  510. or when you're home alone,

  511. we actually feel insecure

  512. and we have to put up

  513. some kind of puppet show

  514. to try and keep out

  515. the threats from our lives.

  516. We pretend that we're fine.

  517. We get defensive

  518. when we're criticized.

  519. We work super hard

  520. to prove ourselves.

  521. We do a whole lot of things

  522. that other people

  523. think we're okay

  524. when deep inside

  525. we know

  526. that there's something missing.

  527. because we feel

  528. the insecurity

  529. of the world around us.

  530. And these last couple of years

  531. we've really felt that, right?

  532. And if you're alone

  533. it's all on you.

  534. It's all on you.

  535. And it may feel like,

  536. you know,

  537. Kevin,

  538. it seems to work for a while

  539. but it's super tiring

  540. and super stressful

  541. if you've got to keep that up

  542. for the whole of your life.

  543. That's the breakup.

  544. But Christmas

  545. doesn't kind of end

  546. with that kind of bad news.

  547. Christmas actually

  548. has something

  549. far more wonderful

  550. to tell us.

  551. It tells us actually

  552. that the very situations

  553. that we fear,

  554. the very situations

  555. that stress us

  556. that we go,

  557. what is going on?

  558. That we,

  559. like Mary and Joseph,

  560. think are threats

  561. in our lives.

  562. When you get

  563. who God actually is,

  564. he turns them

  565. from potential catastrophe

  566. into what

  567. Lord of the Rings

  568. author J.R. Tolkien

  569. calls a eucatastrophe.

  570. Catastrophe

  571. is something

  572. that turns

  573. unexpectedly

  574. bad.

  575. Okay?

  576. Something unexpectedly

  577. bad that happens.

  578. Eucatastrophe

  579. means good

  580. in Greek.

  581. And it's so,

  582. a eucatastrophe

  583. and in his language

  584. is this.

  585. It's the sudden

  586. happy turn

  587. in a story

  588. which pierces you

  589. with a joy

  590. that brings tears.

  591. Let me read that again.

  592. I love that.

  593. He says,

  594. a eucatastrophe,

  595. a good catastrophe,

  596. is a sudden

  597. happy turn

  598. in a story

  599. which pierces you

  600. with a joy

  601. that brings tears.

  602. You see,

  603. it's like

  604. receiving a letter

  605. from the Inland Revenue

  606. which you thought

  607. was asking you

  608. to pay more tax

  609. and just as you're

  610. in despair,

  611. you reread it

  612. and realize

  613. they're giving you money.

  614. That happened to me

  615. this year.

  616. Okay?

  617. That's a eucatastrophe.

  618. For the angel,

  619. for Mary and Joseph,

  620. an angel comes to Joseph

  621. right when he's in the pit

  622. and says,

  623. don't fear.

  624. Don't be afraid.

  625. What looks dark,

  626. I'm actually right

  627. in the midst of this.

  628. And for us,

  629. whether you're looking out

  630. at 2021

  631. and going,

  632. what just happened?

  633. or you're looking out

  634. into 2022

  635. and you're going,

  636. I don't know what's coming.

  637. Things still seem

  638. out of control.

  639. He says,

  640. don't be afraid.

  641. Whether you go,

  642. hey,

  643. there's so much in my life,

  644. there's habits,

  645. maybe I'll make

  646. New Year's resolutions

  647. but I know I'm going to break them.

  648. There's things in my life,

  649. there's sin,

  650. there's shame,

  651. there's things here

  652. which are no right

  653. and you just feel like,

  654. oh.

  655. He says,

  656. don't be afraid.

  657. And for Joseph,

  658. he says,

  659. don't be afraid.

  660. Take Mary as your wife

  661. because what she said

  662. is actually true.

  663. God is the one

  664. who is disturbing

  665. your life right now.

  666. It's not all going wrong,

  667. it's all going very right

  668. because it's better

  669. than you think it is.

  670. This baby who's actually

  671. just rocked your entire world,

  672. you ought to call him Jesus.

  673. And the name Jesus means,

  674. okay,

  675. it's like with the kids,

  676. okay.

  677. The name Jesus means

  678. God saves.

  679. Okay,

  680. you can remember that one

  681. for later.

  682. It means God saves.

  683. You see,

  684. the very hope

  685. that people have been

  686. waiting for

  687. and waiting for

  688. and waiting for

  689. for centuries,

  690. he's here.

  691. He's here

  692. and he's disturbing

  693. your world

  694. and he quotes

  695. the prophecy

  696. from Isaiah

  697. that we mentioned before.

  698. He says,

  699. a virgin will give birth

  700. to a son

  701. and he will be called

  702. Emmanuel

  703. and then he just translates it

  704. in case you didn't get

  705. the message.

  706. He says,

  707. which means

  708. God

  709. with

  710. us.

  711. God

  712. with

  713. you.

  714. God

  715. with

  716. me.

  717. God

  718. with us,

  719. not to nag us.

  720. God

  721. with us,

  722. not to control us.

  723. God

  724. with us,

  725. not to ruin our life

  726. or spoil our fun.

  727. God

  728. with us,

  729. to save us

  730. from ourselves,

  731. to save us

  732. from our sins.

  733. God

  734. with us

  735. who can reach

  736. the buttons

  737. that we cannot

  738. get out of the prisons

  739. that we have made

  740. for ourselves

  741. because the chasm

  742. between us

  743. and God

  744. is too great

  745. for us to cross

  746. by ourselves

  747. but when we

  748. could not cross it,

  749. he has come

  750. down to us.

  751. He has brought

  752. home

  753. to us.

  754. Jesus

  755. is

  756. God

  757. with us.

  758. He has not

  759. abandoned you.

  760. He has not

  761. left you.

  762. the creator

  763. of the universe

  764. is one

  765. who is neither

  766. distant

  767. nor disinterested.

  768. He has come

  769. to you.

  770. Both

  771. 2,000 years

  772. ago

  773. in that little

  774. manger

  775. but also

  776. today

  777. he comes

  778. again

  779. to us.

  780. You see,

  781. even when we

  782. walk away

  783. from home,

  784. he brings

  785. home

  786. to us.

  787. You see,

  788. he came

  789. from the glory

  790. of heaven

  791. into the slum

  792. of our lives

  793. and he didn't

  794. just come

  795. to be with us

  796. in the good times.

  797. He's not

  798. our kind

  799. of fair

  800. weather

  801. friend.

  802. He came

  803. with us

  804. even to

  805. the depths

  806. of our

  807. darkness

  808. because he

  809. knows you,

  810. you know.

  811. He knows

  812. the depths

  813. of your

  814. shame.

  815. He knows

  816. the depths

  817. of your

  818. impatience,

  819. your unkindness,

  820. all the things

  821. that even

  822. you've been

  823. stressed about

  824. over this

  825. last little

  826. while.

  827. He knows

  828. all of

  829. that.

  830. He knows

  831. the depths

  832. of your

  833. aloneness.

  834. He knows

  835. the depths

  836. of your

  837. pain.

  838. He knows

  839. wherever

  840. you are

  841. right now

  842. and he's

  843. there to

  844. be there

  845. with you

  846. right now.

  847. And the

  848. reason you

  849. know he

  850. can be

  851. there with

  852. you right

  853. now is

  854. because he

  855. has been

  856. to the

  857. places where

  858. you cannot

  859. even imagine

  860. that you

  861. should be

  862. because he

  863. came,

  864. as Annabelle

  865. showed us,

  866. he came

  867. to die.

  868. He came

  869. to take

  870. our shame.

  871. He came

  872. to take

  873. our aloneness.

  874. He came

  875. to take

  876. our sins

  877. on himself.

  878. He entered

  879. our self-made

  880. prisons and

  881. did a

  882. prisoner swap.

  883. He put

  884. himself there

  885. so that we

  886. could get

  887. out and be

  888. freed.

  889. He took

  890. the death

  891. sentence on

  892. himself so

  893. that our

  894. aloneness

  895. might never

  896. be a true

  897. aloneness.

  898. You know,

  899. actually,

  900. I just

  901. remembered,

  902. do you know

  903. what the

  904. Liverpool

  905. anthem song

  906. is?

  907. Sorry,

  908. this is just

  909. a nostalgic

  910. moment for

  911. me.

  912. Okay,

  913. if you don't

  914. know it,

  915. you need

  916. to go

  917. home,

  918. along with

  919. watching

  920. Home Alone

  921. and play

  922. this,

  923. the Liverpool

  924. song is

  925. You Will

  926. Never Walk

  927. Alone.

  928. Do you know,

  929. maybe I should

  930. have worn my

  931. shirt this

  932. morning,

  933. but Christmas

  934. says,

  935. if you come

  936. to Christ,

  937. you will

  938. never walk

  939. alone.

  940. You will

  941. never walk

  942. alone.

  943. Because he

  944. says,

  945. I bring

  946. home to

  947. you to a

  948. place where

  949. you can be

  950. known,

  951. where you

  952. can be

  953. loved,

  954. where you

  955. can be

  956. safe,

  957. and where

  958. you can

  959. be secure

  960. with me.

  961. Because there's

  962. nothing to

  963. hide.

  964. Because he

  965. loves you even

  966. though he

  967. knows everything.

  968. And that's a

  969. place where we

  970. can quit the

  971. puppet show.

  972. It's a place

  973. where you don't

  974. have to fix

  975. your 2022.

  976. Because God,

  977. if God,

  978. the creator of

  979. the universe,

  980. who holds

  981. everything that

  982. you fear,

  983. every problem

  984. that you may

  985. face,

  986. he is bigger

  987. than it all.

  988. if he is

  989. with you,

  990. then that

  991. changes

  992. everything.

  993. There may

  994. still be

  995. burglars

  996. outside.

  997. There may

  998. still be

  999. threats and

  1000. insecurity in

  1001. this world

  1002. and in your

  1003. life.

  1004. There may

  1005. still be

  1006. pain in

  1007. 2022.

  1008. For many

  1009. of us,

  1010. there will

  1011. be.

  1012. And some

  1013. of us know

  1014. that.

  1015. But when

  1016. he is with

  1017. you,

  1018. you can

  1019. have joy

  1020. even if

  1021. family life

  1022. is tough

  1023. because you

  1024. know you're

  1025. not alone.

  1026. You can

  1027. have peace

  1028. because no

  1029. matter what's

  1030. going on,

  1031. it's not

  1032. all on your

  1033. shoulders any

  1034. longer because

  1035. Jesus is big

  1036. enough to

  1037. handle those

  1038. things and

  1039. you can give

  1040. him your

  1041. burdens.

  1042. And you can

  1043. take one

  1044. step at a

  1045. time with

  1046. him.

  1047. You see,

  1048. if Jesus

  1049. is with

  1050. you,

  1051. then you

  1052. can have

  1053. hope that

  1054. his love

  1055. is strong

  1056. enough to

  1057. see you

  1058. through whatever

  1059. you're going

  1060. to go through,

  1061. whether it's

  1062. going to be

  1063. highs or

  1064. whether it's

  1065. going to be

  1066. lows.

  1067. And that is

  1068. a place of

  1069. freedom.

  1070. That is a

  1071. place of

  1072. confidence for

  1073. this coming

  1074. year.

  1075. Because,

  1076. you know,

  1077. when home

  1078. is hard,

  1079. everything is

  1080. hard.

  1081. But when

  1082. true home

  1083. is with

  1084. you,

  1085. nothing can

  1086. heal you

  1087. like home

  1088. can heal

  1089. you.

  1090. You see,

  1091. my 10-month-old

  1092. daughter,

  1093. who Angeline

  1094. I think is

  1095. wonderfully looking

  1096. after right now,

  1097. sometimes she

  1098. just cries and

  1099. cries and

  1100. cries.

  1101. And no matter

  1102. what you try

  1103. and do,

  1104. she is just

  1105. inconsolable.

  1106. until she

  1107. sees my

  1108. wife.

  1109. She doesn't

  1110. see me.

  1111. It's got to

  1112. be my

  1113. wife.

  1114. And my

  1115. wife picks

  1116. her up and

  1117. then suddenly

  1118. she smiles

  1119. again.

  1120. That's joy.

  1121. Why does she

  1122. get joy?

  1123. I don't know

  1124. why she doesn't

  1125. work with me.

  1126. Because she's

  1127. safe.

  1128. Because she's

  1129. home.

  1130. Because she

  1131. knows that

  1132. that's where

  1133. she belongs.

  1134. And you

  1135. know,

  1136. you can

  1137. look in

  1138. a thousand

  1139. places,

  1140. but the

  1141. promise of

  1142. Christmas is

  1143. only Emmanuel,

  1144. God with

  1145. us,

  1146. can truly

  1147. comfort and

  1148. satisfy your

  1149. soul.

  1150. And he's

  1151. here.

  1152. And he's

  1153. calling us to

  1154. respond to him

  1155. today.

  1156. Whether you

  1157. are a

  1158. Christian or

  1159. you wouldn't

  1160. even call

  1161. yourself a

  1162. follower of

  1163. Jesus.

  1164. So there's a

  1165. breakup.

  1166. The Christmas

  1167. story has a

  1168. bad news,

  1169. good news

  1170. story.

  1171. Because against

  1172. the bad news,

  1173. the good news

  1174. is the

  1175. eucatastrophe

  1176. that God

  1177. has come to

  1178. be with us.

  1179. How do we

  1180. come and

  1181. respond to

  1182. him?

  1183. It's my

  1184. final thing.

  1185. You know,

  1186. my sister lives

  1187. in Canada.

  1188. I'm in

  1189. Hong Kong.

  1190. My parents

  1191. are in the

  1192. UK.

  1193. After we

  1194. got married,

  1195. I hadn't

  1196. seen my

  1197. sister for

  1198. six,

  1199. nearly seven

  1200. years because

  1201. things just

  1202. didn't work

  1203. out.

  1204. Two years

  1205. ago,

  1206. we were in

  1207. the UK,

  1208. me and my

  1209. wife with

  1210. my parents,

  1211. and it was

  1212. Christmas Eve.

  1213. And we had

  1214. all the food

  1215. was ready,

  1216. we'd prepared

  1217. everything,

  1218. everything was

  1219. on the table,

  1220. we were just

  1221. about to eat,

  1222. and then we

  1223. hear this

  1224. carol singing

  1225. outside.

  1226. And then there

  1227. was this

  1228. knock on the

  1229. door.

  1230. And we went

  1231. to the door

  1232. and opened it,

  1233. and there on

  1234. the threshold,

  1235. totally

  1236. unexpectedly,

  1237. was my

  1238. sister and

  1239. her family.

  1240. we were

  1241. going,

  1242. wow.

  1243. Now at

  1244. that point,

  1245. do you

  1246. think we

  1247. should have

  1248. gone,

  1249. hey,

  1250. listen,

  1251. we're like

  1252. super busy,

  1253. we haven't

  1254. got food for

  1255. you,

  1256. so do you

  1257. think you

  1258. could maybe

  1259. just come

  1260. back another

  1261. time?

  1262. Like,

  1263. wouldn't that

  1264. be nuts?

  1265. Why?

  1266. Because who

  1267. cares if your

  1268. life gets

  1269. disrupted,

  1270. family that

  1271. was apart

  1272. comes back

  1273. together again?

  1274. Isn't that a

  1275. far deeper,

  1276. greater joy

  1277. than turkey

  1278. or whatever,

  1279. right?

  1280. You see,

  1281. Isaiah said

  1282. God would

  1283. come,

  1284. and at

  1285. Christmas,

  1286. God didn't

  1287. break his

  1288. promise.

  1289. He disrupted

  1290. everything for

  1291. Mary and

  1292. Joseph,

  1293. and you know,

  1294. he'll disrupt

  1295. everything for

  1296. you too.

  1297. you can't

  1298. stay living

  1299. life your

  1300. way and

  1301. have him

  1302. with you,

  1303. because you

  1304. have to get

  1305. out of the

  1306. lift and

  1307. only he will

  1308. move you

  1309. out there.

  1310. You can't

  1311. stay trying

  1312. to fix

  1313. life your

  1314. own way,

  1315. your own

  1316. problems,

  1317. in your

  1318. own strength,

  1319. with the

  1320. idea of

  1321. either he's

  1322. an absent

  1323. God,

  1324. he's maybe

  1325. a distant

  1326. God,

  1327. he's a

  1328. disinterested

  1329. God.

  1330. You can't

  1331. stay like

  1332. that and

  1333. know joy,

  1334. the joy of

  1335. coming home,

  1336. but actually

  1337. this Christmas,

  1338. the invitation

  1339. to every

  1340. one of us

  1341. wherever you

  1342. are is,

  1343. will you

  1344. open the

  1345. door and

  1346. let him

  1347. in?

  1348. Will you

  1349. invite him

  1350. into your

  1351. life as

  1352. your saviour,

  1353. as your

  1354. Lord,

  1355. as the

  1356. one that

  1357. you're going

  1358. to put

  1359. your trust

  1360. in this

  1361. coming year,

  1362. that he's

  1363. going to be

  1364. the one that

  1365. no matter

  1366. what happens,

  1367. you know

  1368. Emmanuel,

  1369. God with

  1370. us,

  1371. and that is

  1372. the greatest

  1373. joy that you

  1374. can have

  1375. this Christmas.

  1376. Let me

  1377. just pray

  1378. for us,

  1379. and maybe

  1380. if you

  1381. just,

  1382. while the

  1383. band comes

  1384. up,

  1385. maybe you

  1386. just want

  1387. to think

  1388. about what's

  1389. going on

  1390. in your

  1391. life,

  1392. and how

  1393. can you

  1394. respond?

  1395. Are you

  1396. going to

  1397. leave Jesus

  1398. on the

  1399. doorstep

  1400. with all

  1401. your plans

  1402. and busyness,

  1403. or will

  1404. you make

  1405. him the

  1406. centre of

  1407. your life?

  1408. Father,

  1409. I pray

  1410. that this

  1411. Christmas,

  1412. we'd

  1413. realise

  1414. you're

  1415. better than

  1416. we think

  1417. you are.

  1418. We'd

  1419. realise

  1420. that actually

  1421. all the

  1422. great

  1423. longings

  1424. that we

  1425. have in

  1426. our

  1427. hearts,

  1428. all the

  1429. desires

  1430. that we

  1431. have,

  1432. good and

  1433. bad,

  1434. but all

  1435. the things

  1436. that actually

  1437. we think

  1438. we satisfy

  1439. are ultimately

  1440. just sunbeams

  1441. pointing us

  1442. to the sun,

  1443. which is

  1444. you.

  1445. And I

  1446. pray that

  1447. we would

  1448. in our

  1449. hearts realise

  1450. and not

  1451. stay one

  1452. day longer

  1453. away from

  1454. you.

  1455. Draw us

  1456. to yourself

  1457. this morning,

  1458. we pray.

  1459. Show us

  1460. just what

  1461. an amazing

  1462. thing Christmas

  1463. is.

  1464. Lord,

  1465. would we

  1466. realise

  1467. this is

  1468. good news

  1469. of great

  1470. joy,

  1471. not just

  1472. for everybody

  1473. else,

  1474. but for

  1475. us this

  1476. morning.

  1477. Thank you

  1478. so much

  1479. for sending

  1480. your son

  1481. to us.

  1482. Thank you

  1483. for today.

  1484. Lord,

  1485. I pray

  1486. that we

  1487. would go

  1488. out with

  1489. great joy.

  1490. In Jesus'

  1491. name,

  1492. Amen.
