  1. If you'll turn with me now in your Bibles to the book of Jonah, if you have Bibles,

  2. this is going to be on the screens as well.

  3. If you have the church Bibles, it's Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  4. If your Bibles are the same as mine, that's on page 928.

  5. We're going to read Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  6. We'll read the whole chapter.

  7. This is going to be the text for our sermon this morning as well.

  8. Let us hear God's word.

  9. The word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai.

  10. Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.

  11. But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.

  12. He went down to Chapa, where he found a ship bound for that port.

  13. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

  14. Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm rose that the ship threatened to break up.

  15. All the sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own God.

  16. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.

  17. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

  18. The captain went to him and said,

  19. How can you sleep?

  20. Get up and call on your God.

  21. Maybe he'll take notice of us so that we will not perish.

  22. Then the sailors said to each other,

  23. Come, let's cast lots to find out who's responsible for this calamity.

  24. They cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  25. So they asked him,

  26. Tell us, who's responsible for making all this trouble for us?

  27. What kind of work do you do?

  28. Where do you come from?

  29. What's your country?

  30. From what people are you?

  31. He answered,

  32. I'm a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

  33. This terrified them, and they asked,

  34. What have you done?

  35. They knew he was running away from the Lord because he'd already told them so.

  36. The sea was getting rougher and rougher.

  37. So they asked him,

  38. What should we do to make the sea calm down for us?

  39. Pick me up and throw me into the sea, he replied, and it will become calm.

  40. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.

  41. Instead, the men did their best to row back to land.

  42. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.

  43. Then they cried out to the Lord,

  44. Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man's life.

  45. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man,

  46. for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.

  47. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard,

  48. and the raging sea grew calm.

  49. At this, the men greatly feared the Lord,

  50. and they offered sacrifices to the Lord and made vows to him.

  51. Now the Lord provided huge fish to swallow Jonah,

  52. and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

  53. May God bless his word.

  54. Will you bow your heads with me as we pray?

  55. Our Father in heaven,

  56. we again give you thanks that we can know you as our Father.

  57. We give you thanks that we can know that you hear us,

  58. that you are concerned for us.

  59. Once again, we marvel that you have chosen us,

  60. and that you have saved us through your Son.

  61. And we pray that you would continue to be at work within us by your Holy Spirit.

  62. We ask that each day that you would be focusing our thoughts upon you.

  63. We pray, Father, that your name would be honored.

  64. We pray that your kingdom would come,

  65. and that your church would grow.

  66. We rejoice in the Lord Jesus' promise

  67. that he would build his church,

  68. and that the gates of hell would not stand against it.

  69. And so we pray, Father,

  70. that we would see evidence of that in our own time.

  71. We pray for the concert that will soon be taking place.

  72. We pray for your blessing upon that,

  73. that it would be an encouraging time of fellowship.

  74. We thank you for the desire to raise funds for the church plant in Galashiels.

  75. We pray for that church.

  76. We thank you for it.

  77. We pray that you would be with Craig and his family.

  78. We ask that you would bless them.

  79. We pray that you would encourage them.

  80. We pray for the church there.

  81. We ask that you would continue to draw people to it.

  82. We pray for your blessing upon Craig's preaching,

  83. upon his role as minister.

  84. We ask that you would raise up others as leaders in that church.

  85. We pray, Father,

  86. that you would enable them,

  87. not only on Sundays in the preaching of your word,

  88. but we pray that as they go out into the community there,

  89. that you would enable them to live such lives

  90. that would bear good witness to you.

  91. And we pray, Father,

  92. that you would be drawing people to yourself,

  93. and that you would be building your church,

  94. that more and more people would be professing faith in the Lord Jesus

  95. and following him.

  96. We pray, Father,

  97. for our own congregation.

  98. We pray those things for us as well.

  99. We pray that you would be with us as we seek to reach out

  100. to the community around us

  101. and to those people that we have contact with.

  102. We pray, Father,

  103. that you would bless us as a congregation.

  104. We pray that you would be with those

  105. who are going through times of difficulty.

  106. We pray for those

  107. who are experiencing difficulties with their health

  108. or whose loved ones are unwell.

  109. We commit them to you,

  110. and we pray, Father,

  111. for your hand to be upon them.

  112. In all that we face in this world,

  113. we ask, Lord,

  114. that you would be with us.

  115. We pray for those facing financial difficulty.

  116. We ask that you would provide for them.

  117. We pray for those facing difficulties in relationships.

  118. Give them wisdom and grace

  119. as they seek to respond to those situations.

  120. We pray that you would build us together

  121. as a community,

  122. that you would give us a genuine love for one another.

  123. Father,

  124. we think of our own nation.

  125. We pray for the government in Holyrood

  126. and also in Westminster.

  127. We commit these men and women to you.

  128. Humble them, Father.

  129. May they know that there is a God

  130. to whom they are accountable.

  131. We pray that you would give them wisdom

  132. and integrity

  133. as they go about the work

  134. to which you have called them.

  135. We pray, Father,

  136. that you would bless other nations.

  137. We think of the terrible situation

  138. in Israel and in Gaza at this time.

  139. We pray, Father,

  140. for those who have experienced

  141. the loss of loved ones.

  142. We pray for those who are suffering now.

  143. We ask that you would bring an end

  144. to the violence

  145. and the enmity there.

  146. We pray, Father,

  147. for a quick resolution

  148. to the situation.

  149. As we think of these things,

  150. we recognize how beyond us that is.

  151. We recognize how almost impossible

  152. that seems to us.

  153. But we pray, Father,

  154. that you would do this.

  155. And we ask for your church

  156. in that country.

  157. We pray that you would watch over your people,

  158. those who acknowledge the Lord Jesus

  159. as their Savior.

  160. We pray that you would enable them

  161. to be a blessing to those around them.

  162. We pray similarly

  163. for the situation in Ukraine,

  164. a situation that has gone on for so long

  165. that we almost begin to take it for granted.

  166. We pray, Father,

  167. for those who continue to suffer there.

  168. Again, we pray for an end

  169. to that conflict.

  170. We thank you, Father,

  171. for the measure of peace

  172. and prosperity

  173. that we know in our own country.

  174. We do not take these well off,

  175. and we do,

  176. and we confess that.

  177. But we recognize

  178. that this is a gift from you.

  179. And so we pray, Father,

  180. that you would enable us

  181. to make the most of that opportunity

  182. and to make the most

  183. of the freedoms that we have here

  184. to live faithfully to you.

  185. We pray, Father,

  186. that you would continue with us

  187. as we turn now to your word.

  188. Hear our prayers.

  189. Forgive our sins.

  190. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  191. Amen.

  192. Amen.

  193. We're going to continue our worship now

  194. singing,

  195. Our God Will Go Before Us.

  196. If you would again stand with me

  197. as we sing.

  198. Amen.

  199. Amen.

  200. For every step is faithfulness, is the truth that lights our way.

  201. Our God will go before us, the Lord of hosts is with us.

  202. Oh, praise the one who leads us on, for his grace will bring us home.

  203. Though evil forms against us, all heaven will defend us.

  204. The gates of hell shall not prevail, for the battle is the last.

  205. Our God will go before us, the Lord of hosts is with us.

  206. Oh, praise the one who leads us on, for his grace will bring us home.

  207. Now send us with your presence, and lead us on to heaven.

  208. Where songs of sorrow stray no more, and our every breath is praise.

  209. Our God will go before us, the Lord of hosts is with us.

  210. Oh, praise the one who leads us on, for his grace will bring us home.

  211. Oh, praise the one who leads us on, for his grace will bring us home.

  212. Now our second reading is in the New Testament.

  213. It's in Luke's Gospel.

  214. Luke chapter 18, we'll read verses 9 to 17.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  215. Let us hear God's word.

  216. To some who are confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable.

  217. Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

  218. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed,

  219. God, I thank you that I am not like other people.

  220. Robbers, evildoers, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

  221. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.

  222. But the tax collector stood at a distance.

  223. He wouldn't even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said,

  224. God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

  225. I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

  226. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled,

  227. and all those who humble themselves will be exalted.

  228. People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them.

  229. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.

  230. But Jesus called the children to him and said,

  231. Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,

  232. for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

  233. Truly, I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

  234. May God bless this word.

  235. If you turn to me again, if you have Bibles with you there,

  236. if you turn back to the book of Jonah,

  237. I'm going to be focusing on that book this morning.

  238. If we were to play a word association game,

  239. and I was to say to you,

  240. Jonah,

  241. you would say,

  242. whale.

  243. whale.

  244. We think of Jonah as the book about a whale.

  245. Jonah and the whale.

  246. Jonah and the big fish.

  247. And in fact,

  248. the book of Jonah

  249. is a book about a lot of big things.

  250. If you look with me in Jonah chapter 1,

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  251. at verse 2,

  252. you notice that it begins by mentioning

  253. a great city.

  254. Literally a big city.

  255. You notice in verse 4,

  256. then the Lord sent a great wind,

  257. a big wind.

  258. You notice also it mentions a violent storm.

  259. That again is the word big storm.

  260. In verse 10,

  261. we see how people responded to what Jonah told them.

  262. In verse 10,

  263. this terrified them.

  264. Literally they feared a big fear.

  265. In verse 12,

  266. it mentions a great storm,

  267. a big storm again.

  268. In verse 16,

  269. we're back to fear.

  270. The men greatly feared the Lord.

  271. They feared Yahweh with a great fear.

  272. In verse 17,

  273. now the Lord provided a huge fish,

  274. a great fish,

  275. a big fish.

  276. It gets translated different ways in English,

  277. but in the original,

  278. all of that is the same word.

  279. And in fact,

  280. if we were to carry on,

  281. if we were to look in chapter 4,

  282. for example,

  283. to Jonah,

  284. this seemed very wrong

  285. and he became very angry.

  286. He had a big anger.

  287. And notice in verse 6 of that chapter,

  288. then the Lord provided a leafy plant

  289. and made it grow up over Jonah

  290. to give shade for his head

  291. and to ease his discomfort.

  292. And Jonah was very happy.

  293. He had great joy.

  294. Over and over and over again,

  295. the book of Jonah

  296. tells us about big things.

  297. It's a very little book

  298. about a lot of big things.

  299. A big city,

  300. a big wind,

  301. a big storm,

  302. big fear,

  303. big fish,

  304. big evil,

  305. big joy,

  306. lots and lots of big things.

  307. Now,

  308. when an author does that,

  309. typically,

  310. they want you to notice.

  311. The author of the book of Jonah

  312. is making a point

  313. by telling us about

  314. all of these big things.

  315. But his point

  316. isn't about a big fish

  317. or a big fear

  318. or a big storm.

  319. The author of the book of Jonah

  320. is wanting to impress upon you

  321. the fact that there is

  322. a big God.

  323. The book of Jonah

  324. is about the majesty

  325. and the greatness of God.

  326. And maybe

  327. this is a particularly good time

  328. for us to hear about that.

  329. We should probably acknowledge

  330. all of the time

  331. that our lives are uncertain

  332. and that our lives are short.

  333. But sometimes

  334. we particularly come

  335. to appreciate that.

  336. just within the last

  337. little bit more than a week,

  338. suddenly,

  339. there's war

  340. in the Middle East.

  341. We take it for granted

  342. now,

  343. I think,

  344. often,

  345. sadly,

  346. but there's even war

  347. in Europe.

  348. That should be shocking

  349. to us.

  350. And it's very troubling

  351. to us.

  352. And there are so many

  353. other things.

  354. In the journal Nature

  355. that they've noted,

  356. we talk often

  357. about the climate crisis

  358. and the environmental crisis.

  359. And psychiatrists

  360. sometimes talk about

  361. the way that that

  362. preys on people's mind

  363. and the effect

  364. that that has

  365. upon people's mental health.

  366. And particularly

  367. younger people

  368. who are disproportionately

  369. affected by that.

  370. The article in Nature

  371. links it

  372. to PTSD,

  373. post-traumatic stress disorder,

  374. anxiety,

  375. depression,

  376. learning disorder,

  377. anger amongst

  378. young people.

  379. These are terrible things.

  380. We live in a very

  381. stressful time.

  382. And perhaps

  383. in the midst of that,

  384. it's a very good time

  385. for us to be reminded

  386. that there is a God

  387. who is greater

  388. than all of these things.

  389. I want us to look

  390. this morning

  391. at the book of Jonah

  392. and to see what it tells us

  393. about the greatness

  394. of this God.

  395. And we're going to see

  396. two things.

  397. First of all,

  398. the book of Jonah

  399. emphasizes maybe

  400. most obviously

  401. that God is great

  402. in power.

  403. Do you notice

  404. something strange

  405. about verse 9?

  406. They were asking

  407. Jonah,

  408. who on earth

  409. was he

  410. that he had caused

  411. all of this?

  412. And do you notice

  413. his response

  414. in verse 9?

  415. Jonah says,

  416. I'm a Hebrew

  417. and I worship

  418. the Lord,

  419. the God of heaven,

  420. who made the sea

  421. and the dry land.

  422. maybe we'll mention

  423. this again

  424. as we go on,

  425. but if you read

  426. through the book

  427. of Jonah,

  428. everything that

  429. Jonah says

  430. is technically

  431. correct

  432. and completely

  433. orthodox,

  434. even when he's

  435. doing the very

  436. opposite in terms

  437. of his actual

  438. actions.

  439. So the statement

  440. that Jonah

  441. makes here,

  442. it's a very

  443. true statement.

  444. Yahweh is the

  445. God of heaven,

  446. he is the one

  447. who made the sea

  448. and the dry land,

  449. and what is Jonah

  450. doing as he says

  451. that?

  452. Well, he's running

  453. away from the God

  454. who made the sea

  455. on the sea.

  456. And how well

  457. does that go

  458. for Jonah?

  459. It's not working

  460. out very well.

  461. Notice verse 4,

  462. the Lord sent

  463. a great wind

  464. on the sea

  465. and such a

  466. violent storm

  467. arose that the

  468. ship threatened

  469. to break up.

  470. Do you notice

  471. the language

  472. that's used there

  473. in verse 4?

  474. The ship wasn't

  475. being swamped

  476. with water,

  477. it wasn't sort

  478. of slowly sinking.

  479. Apparently,

  480. I only saw

  481. this recently,

  482. over the weekend

  483. were there

  484. several ships

  485. in Granton

  486. Harbor that

  487. filled with

  488. water and

  489. sank.

  490. That's not

  491. what we're told

  492. was happening

  493. to this ship,

  494. it wasn't just

  495. going to founder.

  496. The storm

  497. was so bad

  498. that the ship

  499. was going to

  500. be smashed

  501. to pieces.

  502. Imagine being

  503. at sea in a

  504. ship like that

  505. in that

  506. kind of storm.

  507. It was a

  508. storm of

  509. such power,

  510. the hardened

  511. sailors,

  512. they were

  513. terrified.

  514. But notice

  515. the power

  516. of God

  517. has revealed

  518. in the book

  519. of Jonah,

  520. not just in

  521. these great

  522. obvious things,

  523. notice as well

  524. that it's also

  525. God exerts

  526. his power

  527. and his control

  528. even in the

  529. smallest of details.

  530. miracles.

  531. So notice

  532. in chapter 4

  533. for example,

  534. in verse 6,

  535. then the Lord

  536. provided a

  537. leafy plant.

  538. That single

  539. plant that

  540. grew up

  541. came from

  542. God.

  543. It was under

  544. his control,

  545. under his

  546. power.

  547. The same

  548. word that's

  549. used there

  550. that the Lord

  551. provided this

  552. in verse 8,

  553. when the sun

  554. rose,

  555. God provided

  556. a scorched

  557. east wind.

  558. the wind

  559. that came

  560. was under

  561. God's

  562. control.

  563. That's also

  564. the same

  565. word that's

  566. used back

  567. in verse 17,

  568. when it says

  569. that the Lord

  570. provided a

  571. huge fish.

  572. All of these

  573. things are

  574. manifestations

  575. of the power

  576. and the

  577. control of

  578. God.

  579. God's

  580. control and

  581. his power

  582. is manifest

  583. throughout this

  584. book,

  585. most obviously

  586. in the storm,

  587. but even in

  588. all of the

  589. smallest of

  590. details.

  591. they were

  592. experiencing

  593. the power

  594. of God,

  595. and we

  596. should recognize

  597. that we

  598. experienced

  599. the power

  600. of God

  601. as well.

  602. Creation

  603. itself testifies

  604. to the power

  605. of its

  606. creator.

  607. We saw

  608. something of

  609. that,

  610. didn't we,

  611. over this

  612. weekend even.

  613. Thankfully

  614. here,

  615. I live right

  616. beside the

  617. river,

  618. so I was

  619. very grateful.

  620. Thankfully

  621. here,

  622. it wasn't as

  623. bad as in

  624. some places,

  625. but we've

  626. experienced the

  627. power of that

  628. storm,

  629. the storm

  630. Babbitt

  631. that came.

  632. Before moving

  633. to Musselboro,

  634. my family and

  635. I used to

  636. live in

  637. Skye,

  638. and that

  639. was sort

  640. of like

  641. every October.

  642. We lived

  643. in a very

  644. old house

  645. there,

  646. and it

  647. was a

  648. very

  649. substantial

  650. stone

  651. house

  652. with walls

  653. maybe that

  654. thick.

  655. It was the

  656. mats that

  657. was originally

  658. built in

  659. the 1800s

  660. with the

  661. church,

  662. massive stone

  663. walls.

  664. If you

  665. looked up

  666. into the

  667. crawl space,

  668. up into

  669. the attic,

  670. the timbers

  671. and the

  672. roof were

  673. massive,

  674. big timbers.

  675. It was a

  676. substantial

  677. house,

  678. and you

  679. could sit

  680. in that

  681. house in

  682. October when

  683. the storms

  684. came,

  685. and the

  686. whole thing

  687. would tremble

  688. because of

  689. the force

  690. of the

  691. storms.

  692. We've

  693. experienced

  694. the power

  695. of these

  696. things.

  697. We should

  698. also recognize

  699. that God's

  700. power is

  701. revealed not

  702. just in the

  703. forces of

  704. nature.

  705. The Bible

  706. also tells us

  707. that Jesus'

  708. resurrection is

  709. the greatest

  710. proof of

  711. his power.

  712. There's one

  713. point in the

  714. New Testament

  715. where the

  716. Apostle Paul

  717. speaks about

  718. God's

  719. incomparably

  720. great power,

  721. which he

  722. then goes on

  723. to describe

  724. as God's

  725. mighty strength

  726. which he

  727. exerted when

  728. he raised

  729. Christ from

  730. the dead

  731. and seated

  732. him at his

  733. right hand

  734. in the

  735. heavenly realms

  736. far above

  737. all rule

  738. and authority,

  739. power,

  740. and dominion,

  741. and every

  742. name that is

  743. invoked,

  744. not only in

  745. the present

  746. age,

  747. but also

  748. in the

  749. one to

  750. come.

  751. Two thousand

  752. years ago,

  753. Jesus died,

  754. and three

  755. days later,

  756. he was

  757. raised from

  758. the dead.

  759. And when

  760. that happened,

  761. it was a

  762. manifestation

  763. of God's

  764. incomparably

  765. great power.

  766. God is

  767. overwhelming

  768. in power.

  769. And what

  770. effect should

  771. that have

  772. on us?

  773. If we're

  774. honest,

  775. very often

  776. we behave

  777. like Jonah.

  778. We'll say

  779. a little

  780. bit more

  781. about his

  782. behavior

  783. in a

  784. moment.

  785. But what

  786. we ought

  787. to do,

  788. we see

  789. that

  790. exemplified

  791. in the

  792. sailors.

  793. Do you

  794. notice in

  795. verse 16?

  796. At this,

  797. and what

  798. is this?

  799. This is

  800. in verse 15,

  801. the sea

  802. grew calm.

  803. You'd think

  804. they'd just

  805. be relieved,

  806. go back to

  807. whatever they'd

  808. been doing.

  809. at this

  810. the men

  811. greatly

  812. feared the

  813. Lord,

  814. and they

  815. offered

  816. sacrifices

  817. to the

  818. Lord,

  819. and made

  820. vows to

  821. him.

  822. These

  823. people were

  824. previously

  825. pagans.

  826. In verse

  827. 5,

  828. we tell

  829. that they

  830. were told

  831. that they

  832. had been

  833. worshipping

  834. all of

  835. their own

  836. gods.

  837. Now,

  838. they fear

  839. Yahweh,

  840. and they

  841. worship

  842. Yahweh.

  843. when we

  844. go out

  845. and we

  846. see the

  847. majesty

  848. and the

  849. grandeur

  850. of the

  851. creation

  852. around us,

  853. when we

  854. experience

  855. something of

  856. the power

  857. of the

  858. forces of

  859. nature,

  860. which

  861. reveal to

  862. us just

  863. a tiny

  864. bit of

  865. God's

  866. infinite

  867. power,

  868. when you

  869. experience

  870. those things,

  871. it should

  872. fill you

  873. with a

  874. sense of

  875. awe.

  876. It should

  877. give you

  878. a desire

  879. to worship

  880. the God

  881. who stands

  882. behind

  883. all of

  884. that.

  885. these

  886. things

  887. should

  888. lead us

  889. to

  890. worship

  891. God.

  892. Also,

  893. I recognize

  894. that many

  895. of these

  896. things,

  897. if we

  898. talk about

  899. the power

  900. of God

  901. revealed

  902. in the

  903. storms,

  904. we think

  905. about the

  906. control of

  907. God over

  908. all things,

  909. I recognize

  910. that that

  911. will also

  912. raise

  913. questions

  914. for us.

  915. The book

  916. of Jonah

  917. doesn't

  918. seek to

  919. answer all

  920. of these

  921. questions.

  922. Why does

  923. God allow

  924. a certain

  925. thing to

  926. happen?

  927. These

  928. questions do

  929. come to

  930. mind.

  931. this book

  932. is

  933. emphasized

  934. in the

  935. simple

  936. fact that

  937. God is

  938. in control

  939. and that

  940. he is

  941. all-powerful.

  942. And one

  943. of the

  944. striking

  945. things is

  946. that the

  947. Bible

  948. often

  949. emphasizes

  950. this

  951. for your

  952. comfort.

  953. Think of

  954. what Jesus

  955. says.

  956. Are not

  957. two sparrows

  958. sold for

  959. a penny?

  960. Sparrows,

  961. tiny,

  962. insignificant

  963. birds,

  964. you can buy

  965. them for

  966. nothing.

  967. Two sparrows

  968. sold for

  969. a penny,

  970. yet not

  971. one of

  972. them will

  973. fall to the

  974. ground outside

  975. of your

  976. Father's

  977. care.

  978. Jesus is

  979. saying this

  980. in a

  981. context in

  982. which he's

  983. emphasizing that

  984. the disciples

  985. needn't worry,

  986. that they

  987. needn't panic,

  988. because they

  989. know God.

  990. And he is a

  991. God of

  992. unlimited

  993. power,

  994. whose power

  995. extends even

  996. to the most

  997. minute things.

  998. And notice

  999. how Jesus

  1000. tells us to

  1001. think of God

  1002. there.

  1003. care.

  1004. Not one

  1005. of them

  1006. falls to

  1007. the ground

  1008. outside of

  1009. your Father's

  1010. care.

  1011. And you

  1012. remember how

  1013. Jesus taught

  1014. us to

  1015. pray.

  1016. He taught

  1017. us to

  1018. say,

  1019. our Father

  1020. in heaven.

  1021. People have

  1022. commented on

  1023. those two

  1024. words,

  1025. Father and

  1026. heaven.

  1027. The fact

  1028. that God

  1029. is Father

  1030. in the

  1031. sense that

  1032. he is

  1033. willing to

  1034. help you,

  1035. he is

  1036. willing to

  1037. receive you.

  1038. There are

  1039. many things

  1040. that I am

  1041. willing to

  1042. do.

  1043. There are

  1044. many things

  1045. that are

  1046. outside of

  1047. my control

  1048. that I

  1049. can't do

  1050. even if I

  1051. wanted to.

  1052. But your

  1053. Father is

  1054. in heaven.

  1055. He is not

  1056. limited by

  1057. anything.

  1058. He is a

  1059. God of

  1060. unlimited

  1061. power.

  1062. So this

  1063. gives you

  1064. confidence.

  1065. It doesn't

  1066. answer all of

  1067. the questions

  1068. that you may

  1069. have.

  1070. It doesn't

  1071. necessarily

  1072. enable you to

  1073. understand why

  1074. something has

  1075. happened.

  1076. But in the

  1077. midst of all of

  1078. these things,

  1079. things which

  1080. prey upon

  1081. our mental

  1082. health,

  1083. things which

  1084. often affect

  1085. our physical

  1086. health, the

  1087. most difficult

  1088. things that you

  1089. might go

  1090. through, in

  1091. the midst of

  1092. all of that,

  1093. you can know

  1094. that there is a

  1095. God behind all

  1096. of that.

  1097. And through

  1098. Jesus, you can

  1099. know him as

  1100. your Father in

  1101. heaven.

  1102. This is

  1103. astonishing.

  1104. It should lead

  1105. you not only to

  1106. worship him, but

1107. also to be able to

  1108. take comfort in

  1109. him, recognizing

  1110. that he loves you

  1111. and that he cares

  1112. for you.

  1113. God.

  1114. So in the

  1115. first place, the

  1116. book of Jonah

  1117. reveals to you a

  1118. God who is

  1119. unlimited in

  1120. power, who is

  1121. overwhelming in

  1122. power.

  1123. The second

  1124. thing that the

  1125. book of Jonah

  1126. emphasizes, which

  1127. we might not at

  1128. first appreciate,

1129. is that this is a

  1130. God of mercy.

  1131. The book of Jonah

  1132. reveals that God is

  1133. great in mercy.

  1134. I find Jonah a

  1135. fascinating book

  1136. because of the way

  1137. it was written.

  1138. And at the

  1139. very beginning,

  1140. one of the

  1141. fascinating things

  1142. is that at the

  1143. beginning of the

  1144. account, there

  1145. are two, well, we

  1146. could say

  1147. ambiguities, two

  1148. things that we're

  1149. not certain about.

  1150. We might make

  1151. assumptions about

  1152. them, but there

  1153. are two things that

  1154. aren't actually

  1155. clear at the

  1156. beginning of the

  1157. book.

  1158. And both of them

  1159. relate to

  1160. motivation.

  1161. The first of them

  1162. relates to God's

  1163. motivation.

  1164. Why is God

  1165. sending Jonah to

  1166. Nineveh?

  1167. And then the

  1168. second one relates

  1169. to Jonah's

  1170. motivation.

  1171. Why does Jonah

  1172. run away from

  1173. Nineveh?

  1174. Some of you may

  1175. know, but Tarshish

  1176. is believed to be

  1177. about where

  1178. Gibraltar is.

  1179. So if Jonah was

  1180. supposed to go

  1181. east to Nineveh,

  1182. and then he goes

  1183. west to

  1184. Gibraltar, he's

  1185. going as far as

  1186. he possibly can in

  1187. the opposite

  1188. direction.

  1189. So we might

  1190. wonder, why is

  1191. Jonah doing

  1192. that?

  1193. With regard to

  1194. that first

  1195. question, what's

  1196. motivating God,

  1197. there's a degree

  1198. of ambiguity.

  1199. If you look at

  1200. verse 2, go to

  1201. the great city of

  1202. Nineveh and

  1203. preach against it

  1204. because its

  1205. wickedness has

  1206. come up before

  1207. me.

  1208. Now that's a

  1209. possible way of

  1210. translating it,

  1211. and if it's

  1212. translated that

  1213. way, what's

  1214. motivating God to

  1215. send Jonah to

  1216. Nineveh?

  1217. Well, his

  1218. anger.

  1219. God's angry at

  1220. the Ninevites

  1221. because of what

  1222. they've done,

  1223. isn't he?

  1224. It's his wrath

  1225. that's motivating

  1226. him.

  1227. Their wickedness

  1228. has come up

  1229. before me.

  1230. Go and preach

  1231. against them.

  1232. What if I were

  1233. to tell you that

  1234. verse 2 could

  1235. just as equally

  1236. be translated,

  1237. go and preach

  1238. to them,

  1239. because their

  1240. calamity has

  1241. come up before

  1242. me, because the

  1243. danger that they

  1244. are in has come

  1245. up before me.

  1246. The word that's

  1247. translated here as

  1248. wickedness, that's

  1249. the same as the

  1250. word that's used

  1251. in verse 7.

  1252. Come, let us

  1253. cast lots to

  1254. find out who is

  1255. responsible for

  1256. this calamity.

  1257. It wasn't

  1258. wickedness that

  1259. they were talking

  1260. about.

  1261. It was the

  1262. terrible danger

  1263. that they were

  1264. afraid of that

  1265. they're talking

  1266. about.

  1267. So verse 2

  1268. could be

  1269. translated in

  1270. either of those

  1271. ways.

  1272. There's a degree

  1273. of ambiguity there.

  1274. What is it

  1275. that's motivating

  1276. God?

  1277. What's the

  1278. answer?

  1279. Well, the

  1280. shocking thing

  1281. as we get to

  1282. the end of the

  1283. book is that

  1284. the thing that's

  1285. motivating God

  1286. is his

  1287. compassion.

  1288. The Lord

  1289. said,

  1290. you've been

  1291. concerned about

  1292. this plant,

  1293. though you

  1294. didn't tend it

  1295. or make it

  1296. grow.

  1297. It sprang up

  1298. overnight and

  1299. died overnight.

  1300. And should I

  1301. not have

  1302. concern for

  1303. the great

  1304. city of

  1305. Nineveh,

  1306. in which

  1307. there are

  1308. more than

  1309. 120,000

  1310. people who

  1311. cannot tell

  1312. their right

  1313. hand from

  1314. their left?

  1315. We would

  1316. be wrong

  1317. if we assumed

  1318. at the

  1319. beginning that

  1320. God was

  1321. motivated by

  1322. his wrath

  1323. and his

  1324. anger.

  1325. I suppose

  1326. wrath and

  1327. anger is a

  1328. thing.

  1329. It is part

  1330. of God's

  1331. response to

  1332. human sin.

  1333. But that's

  1334. not the

  1335. thing that's

  1336. being emphasized

  1337. here.

  1338. And that's

  1339. not the

  1340. reason that

  1341. God is

  1342. sending Jonah

  1343. to Nineveh.

  1344. God tells

  1345. us at the

  1346. end that

  1347. the thing

  1348. that's

  1349. motivating

  1350. him to

  1351. send Jonah

  1352. to Nineveh

  1353. is his

  1354. great concern

  1355. for the

  1356. people of

  1357. that city

  1358. in spite of

  1359. their wickedness.

  1360. And this is

  1361. tremendous,

  1362. isn't it?

  1363. If you're here

  1364. this morning and

  1365. you're not yet a

  1366. Christian,

  1367. this is the

  1368. thing that makes

  1369. all the

  1370. difference,

  1371. isn't it?

  1372. God is

  1373. great in

  1374. power.

  1375. That wouldn't

  1376. really be

  1377. encouraging,

  1378. would it?

  1379. Unless we

  1380. knew that

  1381. that God

  1382. was for

  1383. us.

  1384. If we

  1385. were alienated

  1386. from that

  1387. God,

  1388. the fact that

  1389. he is a

  1390. God of

  1391. overwhelming

  1392. power would

  1393. be a

  1394. terrifying

  1395. thing.

  1396. But the

  1397. point of

  1398. the book

  1399. of Jonah,

  1400. one of the

  1401. points,

  1402. is that you

  1403. can know

  1404. that this

  1405. God is

  1406. for you.

  1407. He's

  1408. motivated by

  1409. his concern

  1410. for you.

  1411. In the

  1412. New Testament

  1413. we read,

  1414. we could

  1415. pick many

  1416. examples,

  1417. in 1 John,

  1418. in one of

  1419. John's letters,

  1420. he said,

  1421. this is how

  1422. we know

  1423. what love

  1424. is.

  1425. Jesus Christ

  1426. laid down

  1427. his life

  1428. for us.

  1429. And then

  1430. later on,

  1431. John goes

  1432. on to say,

  1433. this is love.

  1434. Not that we

  1435. loved God,

  1436. but that he

  1437. loved us

  1438. and sent

  1439. his sins

  1440. son as

  1441. an atoning

  1442. sacrifice

  1443. for our

  1444. sins.

  1445. God didn't

  1446. just send

  1447. Jonah,

  1448. God sent

  1449. his son,

  1450. God sent

  1451. Jesus,

  1452. and he

  1453. sent him

  1454. to save

  1455. you.

  1456. That's

  1457. really an

  1458. astonishing

  1459. thought.

  1460. If you

  1461. have a

  1462. sense,

  1463. all of us

  1464. have a

  1465. conscience,

  1466. we know

  1467. that we've

  1468. done things

  1469. that are

  1470. wrong.

  1471. If you

  1472. recognize

  1473. that and

  1474. you have

  1475. some

  1476. conception

  1477. of a

  1478. great and

  1479. all-powerful

  1480. God,

  1481. that would

  1482. be

  1483. terrifying.

  1484. But he

  1485. has given

  1486. proof of

  1487. the fact

  1488. that he

  1489. is a

  1490. merciful

  1491. and a

  1492. loving

  1493. God

  1494. in that

  1495. he has

  1496. sent

  1497. his

  1498. son.

  1499. And

  1500. Jesus

  1501. died

  1502. for the

  1503. sins

  1504. of his

  1505. people.

  1506. So if

  1507. you're not

  1508. a Christian

  1509. here this

  1510. morning,

  1511. you can

  1512. be.

  1513. You can

  1514. know this

  1515. God.

  1516. You can

  1517. turn to

  1518. Jesus and

  1519. trust in

  1520. him and

  1521. know that

  1522. as you

  1523. do so,

  1524. you experience

  1525. the mercy

  1526. of God,

  1527. the compassion

  1528. of God.

  1529. Jesus'

  1530. resurrection is

  1531. the proof

  1532. of that.

  1533. If you're

  1534. here this

  1535. morning and

  1536. you are a

  1537. Christian,

  1538. this is

  1539. also

  1540. tremendously

  1541. encouraging.

  1542. Because how

  1543. often are we

  1544. like Jonah?

  1545. There's the

  1546. Jonah of the

  1547. first half of

  1548. the book,

  1549. who is sort

  1550. of openly,

  1551. aggressively

  1552. hostile toward

  1553. God and

  1554. doing the

  1555. opposite of

  1556. what he

  1557. knows God

  1558. wants him

  1559. to do.

  1560. There's the

  1561. Jonah of

  1562. the second

  1563. half of

  1564. the book,

  1565. who is

  1566. maybe we

  1567. could say

  1568. passively

  1569. aggressive.

  1570. He sort

  1571. of does

  1572. what he's

  1573. supposed to

  1574. do,

  1575. doesn't he?

  1576. But not

  1577. really.

  1578. Do you

  1579. notice his

  1580. message to

  1581. the Ninevites?

  1582. Forty more

  1583. days and

  1584. Nineveh will

  1585. be overthrown.

  1586. It might not

  1587. be described as

  1588. the most

  1589. winsome gospel

  1590. message ever.

  1591. Jonah did

  1592. the bare

  1593. minimum.

  1594. He did

  1595. what he

  1596. had to

  1597. do.

  1598. But do

  1599. you notice,

  1600. lest you

  1601. think I'm

  1602. being too

  1603. hard on

  1604. Jonah,

  1605. at the

  1606. end of

  1607. this,

  1608. in spite

  1609. of the

  1610. terseness

  1611. of his

  1612. message,

  1613. in verse

  1614. 10 of

  1615. chapter 3,

  1616. when God

  1617. saw what

  1618. they did

  1619. and how

  1620. they turned

  1621. from their

  1622. evil ways,

  1623. he relented

  1624. and did

  1625. not bring

  1626. on them

  1627. the destruction

  1628. that he

  1629. had threatened.

  1630. The Ninevites,

  1631. this is

  1632. tremendous

  1633. news.

  1634. At this

  1635. point,

  1636. Jonah's

  1637. delighted,

  1638. yes?

  1639. or not.

  1640. But to

  1641. Jonah,

  1642. this seemed

  1643. very wrong

  1644. and he

  1645. became angry.

  1646. He prayed

  1647. to the

  1648. Lord,

  1649. isn't this

  1650. what I

  1651. said,

  1652. Lord,

  1653. when I

  1654. was still

  1655. at home?

  1656. That is

  1657. why I

  1658. tried to

  1659. forestall,

  1660. this is

  1661. what I

  1662. tried to

  1663. forestall

  1664. by fleeing

  1665. to Tarshish.

  1666. God.

  1667. I

  1668. knew that

  1669. you

  1670. were a

  1671. gracious

  1672. and

  1673. compassionate

  1674. God,

  1675. slow to

  1676. anger and

  1677. abounding

  1678. in love,

  1679. a God

  1680. who relents

  1681. from sending

  1682. calamity.

  1683. Again,

  1684. that's

  1685. true.

  1686. And

  1687. Jonah's

  1688. angry about

  1689. it.

  1690. This is,

  1691. incidentally,

  1692. I mentioned,

  1693. we make two

  1694. assumptions.

  1695. We assume

  1696. at the

  1697. beginning of

  1698. the story

  1699. that Jonah

  1700. ran away

  1701. from the

  1702. Ninevites

  1703. because he

  1704. was scared

  1705. of them.

  1706. We could

  1707. read,

  1708. if you

  1709. wanted,

  1710. you could

  1711. read in

  1712. Nahum,

  1713. in chapter

  1714. three,

  1715. there's a

  1716. description

  1717. of what

  1718. Nineveh was

  1719. like.

  1720. It was a

  1721. terrifying

  1722. place.

  1723. I would

  1724. run away

  1725. from Nineveh.

  1726. I would

  1727. be terrified.

  1728. Jonah

  1729. didn't run

  1730. away because

  1731. he was

  1732. scared.

  1733. Jonah ran

  1734. away because

  1735. he hated

  1736. them.

  1737. And he

  1738. was afraid

  1739. that if

  1740. he went,

  1741. he tells

  1742. us this,

  1743. he was

  1744. afraid that

  1745. if he

  1746. went,

  1747. that God

  1748. would have

  1749. mercy upon

  1750. them.

  1751. And his

  1752. hatred of

  1753. them was

  1754. such,

  1755. justifiably,

  1756. you might

  1757. argue,

  1758. they had

  1759. done horrible

  1760. things.

  1761. But Jonah's

  1762. hatred of

  1763. them was

  1764. such that

  1765. he did

  1766. not want

  1767. them to

  1768. experience

  1769. God's

  1770. mercy.

  1771. Maybe we're

  1772. not quite as

  1773. extreme as

  1774. Jonah,

  1775. but how

  1776. often are we a

  1777. little bit like

  1778. him?

  1779. We know all

  1780. of the right

  1781. words to

  1782. say,

  1783. we're correct

  1784. in all of

  1785. that,

  1786. we know what

  1787. we ought to

  1788. do, and

  1789. sometimes we

  1790. even sort of

  1791. do it,

  1792. good, but

  1793. our hearts

  1794. not really

  1795. in it.

  1796. And

  1797. particularly,

  1798. the challenge

  1799. here is to

  1800. demonstrate

  1801. God's mercy,

  1802. but I

  1803. mention this

  1804. at this

  1805. point,

  1806. because this

  1807. is also

  1808. encouraging for

  1809. you.

  1810. If you're

  1811. here this

  1812. morning and

  1813. you're not

  1814. a Christian,

  1815. the overwhelming

  1816. greatness of

  1817. God's mercy

  1818. is tremendously

  1819. good news.

  1820. And if you

  1821. are a

  1822. Christian,

  1823. it is also

  1824. tremendously

  1825. good news,

  1826. because so

  1827. often we're

  1828. like Jonah.

  1829. So in the

  1830. first place,

  1831. this is an

  1832. encouragement to

  1833. us, this is

  1834. the best news.

  1835. There is also

  1836. a degree of

  1837. challenge for

  1838. us here.

  1839. Do you

  1840. notice how

  1841. the book of

  1842. Jonah ends?

  1843. It ends

  1844. with a

  1845. question,

  1846. doesn't it?

  1847. Should I

  1848. not have

  1849. concern for

  1850. the great

  1851. city of

  1852. Nineveh?

  1853. God

  1854. asked Jonah

  1855. a question

  1856. and Jonah

  1857. doesn't

  1858. answer.

  1859. At least

  1860. we're not

  1861. told how

  1862. Jonah

  1863. answered.

  1864. That's not

  1865. by accident,

  1866. is it?

  1867. The author

  1868. of the book

  1869. wants us

  1870. to ask

  1871. that question.

  1872. Should

  1873. God

  1874. not have

  1875. compassion

  1876. for those

  1877. who are

  1878. still alienated

  1879. from him?

  1880. And part

  1881. of the

  1882. point of

  1883. the book

  1884. of Jonah

  1885. is not

  1886. merely for

  1887. us

  1888. ourselves

  1889. to know

  1890. the compassion,

  1891. the mercy,

  1892. and the

  1893. forgiveness

  1894. of God

  1895. through Jesus.

  1896. Part of

  1897. the point

  1898. of the

  1899. book of

  1900. Jonah

  1901. is for

  1902. us to

  1903. demonstrate

  1904. that

  1905. attitude

  1906. toward

  1907. other

  1908. people.

  1909. What did

  1910. Jonah do?

  1911. Did

  1912. Jonah ever

  1913. repent?

  1914. The Ninevites

  1915. repented?

  1916. Did Jonah

  1917. ever repent?

  1918. We don't

  1919. know.

  1920. It's left

  1921. us an

  1922. open question

  1923. because we

  1924. are to

  1925. ask that

  1926. question.

  1927. We

  1928. probably

  1929. don't

  1930. normally

  1931. take

  1932. things

  1933. to the

  1934. extreme

  1935. that

  1936. Jonah

  1937. did.

  1938. But how

  1939. often

  1940. are we

  1941. maybe

  1942. just

  1943. unconcerned

  1944. about

  1945. other

  1946. people?

  1947. We know

  1948. that they're

  1949. not

  1950. Christians

  1951. in theory,

  1952. we know

  1953. the implications

  1954. of that,

  1955. but we

  1956. really don't

  1957. worry about

  1958. it very

  1959. much.

  1960. But then

  1961. this book

  1962. is challenging

  1963. us,

  1964. isn't it?

  1965. God is

  1966. concerned

  1967. about these

  1968. people,

  1969. and so

  1970. should we

  1971. be.

  1972. Practically,

  1973. in terms

  1974. of what

  1975. we do

  1976. about

  1977. that,

  1978. one thing

  1979. very simply

  1980. that you

  1981. can do

  1982. is that

  1983. you can

  1984. pray.

  1985. Those of

  1986. you who

  1987. are Christians

  1988. here this

  1989. morning,

  1990. you will

  1991. know people

  1992. who aren't.

  1993. You can

  1994. pray that

  1995. God would

  1996. give them

  1997. a desire

  1998. to know

  1999. him.

  2000. You can

  2001. pray that

  2002. God would

  2003. give you

  2004. an opportunity

  2005. to speak

  2006. to them.

  2007. We can

  2008. seek to

  2009. live lives

  2010. in a way

  2011. that reflects

  2012. well upon

  2013. the gospel.

  2014. Just in

  2015. simple ways

  2016. we can

  2017. seek to

  2018. address this,

  2019. even simply

  2020. by praying

  2021. for people,

  2022. praying for

  2023. ourselves,

  2024. praying that

  2025. God would

  2026. give us

  2027. that desire

  2028. and that

  2029. concern.

  2030. So there

  2031. is a

  2032. challenge to

  2033. us here.

  2034. But as we

  2035. conclude,

  2036. I want us

  2037. to return to

  2038. the fact that

  2039. this is

  2040. profoundly

  2041. encouraging.

  2042. And one

  2043. of the

  2044. things that

  2045. I think is

  2046. most striking

  2047. in this

  2048. book is

  2049. not God's

  2050. compassion to

  2051. the Ninevites.

  2052. I think one

  2053. of the most

  2054. striking things

  2055. in the book

  2056. of Jonah

  2057. is God's

  2058. patience with

  2059. Jonah.

  2060. God didn't

  2061. have to put

  2062. up with

  2063. Jonah.

  2064. God didn't

  2065. have to

  2066. provide the

  2067. great fish.

  2068. God didn't

  2069. need Jonah

  2070. to save the

  2071. Ninevites.

  2072. He could have

  2073. sent somebody

  2074. else.

  2075. But he

  2076. persevered with

  2077. Jonah.

  2078. God didn't

  2079. have to put

  2080. up with

  2081. Jonah's

  2082. behavior in

  2083. chapters 3

  2084. and 4.

  2085. And yet he

  2086. did.

  2087. All through

  2088. the book

  2089. of Jonah

  2090. God persevered

  2091. with Jonah.

  2092. And we

  2093. don't know

  2094. what happened

  2095. but I

  2096. think we

  2097. can believe

  2098. that God

  2099. continued to

  2100. persevere with

  2101. Jonah after

  2102. the book

  2103. because we

  2104. have the

  2105. book,

  2106. don't we?

  2107. Who recorded

  2108. this for us?

  2109. Who gave

  2110. us this?

  2111. If not

  2112. Jonah.

  2113. Presumably

  2114. then God

  2115. persevered with

  2116. him and was

  2117. at work in

  2118. him.

  2119. Isn't that

  2120. good news for

  2121. us?

  2122. Because so

  2123. often we're

  2124. like Jonah.

  2125. All the

  2126. time we're

  2127. like Jonah.

  2128. Maybe I

  2129. should speak

  2130. for myself.

  2131. All the

  2132. time I'm

  2133. like Jonah.

  2134. Either the

  2135. open rebellious

  2136. Jonah at

  2137. the beginning

  2138. of the book

  2139. or the

  2140. passively

  2141. aggressive

  2142. Jonah in

  2143. the second

  2144. half of

  2145. the book.

  2146. I'm not

  2147. really sure

  2148. if one's

  2149. better than

  2150. the other.

  2151. But all

  2152. of the time

  2153. we struggle

  2154. with these

  2155. things.

  2156. And yet

  2157. God

  2158. perseveres

  2159. with us.

  2160. And that

  2161. is tremendously

  2162. encouraging.

  2163. That you

  2164. can know

  2165. that this

  2166. God is

  2167. not only

  2168. a God

  2169. who is

  2170. great in

  2171. power.

  2172. We

  2173. experience

  2174. that in

  2175. the forces

  2176. of nature.

  2177. The

  2178. resurrection

  2179. of Jesus

  2180. is a

  2181. great

  2182. testimony

  2183. to the

  2184. power of

  2185. God.

  2186. God

  2187. is great

  2188. in power

  2189. and God

  2190. is also

  2191. great in

  2192. mercy.

  2193. He's

  2194. proven that

  2195. in the

  2196. cross,

  2197. in the

  2198. giving of

  2199. his son.

  2200. Will you

  2201. bow your

  2202. heads with

  2203. me as we

  2204. pray?

  2205. Amen.

  2206. Amen.

  2207. Amen.

  2208. Amen.

  2209. Amen.

  2210. Amen.

  2211. Amen.

  2212. Amen.

  2213. Amen.

  2214. Amen.

  2215. Amen.

  2216. Amen.

  2217. Amen.

  2218. Amen.

  2219. Our Father

  2220. in Heaven,

  2221. we rejoice

  2222. in your

  2223. word.

  2224. We pray

  2225. that you

  2226. would enable

  2227. us to take

  2228. these things

  2229. in and

  2230. to marvel

  2231. at the

  2232. magnitude

  2233. of your

  2234. mercy.

  2235. We pray,

  2236. Father,

  2237. for any

  2238. here this

  2239. morning who

  2240. are not

  2241. yet Christians.

  2242. We ask

  2243. that you

  2244. would draw

  2245. them to

  2246. the Lord

  2247. Jesus and

  2248. they would

  2249. experience

  2250. your mercy

  2251. and compassion.

  2252. We pray

  2253. for those

  2254. of us

  2255. who are

  2256. following

  2257. Jesus.

  2258. We pray

  2259. that you

  2260. would give

  2261. us a

  2262. fresh sense

  2263. of your

  2264. love for

  2265. us,

  2266. that we

  2267. would be

  2268. overwhelmed

  2269. by this,

  2270. that we

  2271. would delight

  2272. in it.

  2273. We pray

  2274. that you

  2275. would make

  2276. yourself,

  2277. Father,

  2278. Son,

  2279. and Holy

  2280. Spirit,

  2281. to be the

  2282. most precious

  2283. thing to

  2284. us in

  2285. all our

  2286. experience.

  2287. And we

  2288. pray,

  2289. Father,

  2290. that we

  2291. would have

  2292. a desire

  2293. to make

  2294. you known

  2295. to those

  2296. around us.

  2297. We ask

  2298. that you

  2299. would watch

  2300. over us

  2301. as we

  2302. go from

  2303. here.

  2304. Hear our

  2305. prayers.

  2306. Forgive us

  2307. all our

  2308. sins.

  2309. We ask

  2310. these things

  2311. in Jesus'

  2312. name.

  2313. Amen.
