  1. Heavenly Father, we have come from all different parts of the city and we have had all sorts of different types of weeks.

  2. Some of us have had really crummy weeks, others have had really good weeks.

  3. Some of us are dealing with some tough stuff, others are just kind of flying high.

  4. Lord, wherever we may be, Lord, I pray that you will come and by your word, by your Holy Spirit, minister to us in the place that we need your correction and your encouragement and your great love.

  5. We pray all these things in Christ's name. Amen.

  6. Please be seated.

  7. Good.

  8. Obviously, we live in a celebrity culture and a part of a celebrity culture is that we look to celebrities as almost transcendent types of people.

  9. They're not like you and I.

  10. They're somehow on like a plateau, a next level of existence.

  11. And yet, we want to come near to them.

  12. We want to connect with them.

  13. We want them to be intimate with us.

  14. We want to be friends with them.

  15. At least some of us might.

  16. You might be too shy.

  17. That's totally fine.

  18. A couple of stories.

  19. When I was 11, I don't exactly know.

  20. We were in Toronto.

  21. We were at some kind of, I think it was like a car show or something.

  22. Anyways, Daryl Sittler was there.

  23. I was 11 years old.

  24. I had no idea who Daryl Sittler was.

  25. There was a famous guy giving autographs.

  26. So, I went up to him.

  27. I had no idea who he was.

  28. And I don't know if this is like revisionist history, but I remember him kind of making fun of me that I didn't know who he was.

  29. I don't know.

  30. I was, you'll have to forgive me.

  31. It's like a generation removed if you're like a diehard Leafs fan saying this I know in Ottawa.

  32. But, I mean, that's well before my time, Daryl Sittler was.

  33. Anyways, it was just interesting that, at least in my memory, I could be totally wrong.

  34. But, I'm pretty sure I'm right.

  35. Daryl Sittler treated me with contempt because I had no idea who he was.

  36. Another story, a bit more positive.

  37. I was helping out at a summer camp.

  38. I was volunteering for Youth Week.

  39. And out of nowhere, again, Toronto area, Tony Fernandez visited.

  40. I don't know if any of you Blue Jays fans, yeah, if you know who Tony Fernandez was, but he's a World Series champion.

  41. And when I was a kid, I mean, I, the Blue Jays, they were everything.

  42. And I recognized who he was.

  43. And I was a bit like, whoa, that's Tony Fernandez.

  44. And he was really nice.

  45. It was just really interesting.

  46. I was like, oh, he's just a regular guy.

  47. Anyways, I bring up those stories just to say how it seems like one of the reasons why we're so maybe given to celebrity culture

  48. is because we want to touch something that's beyond or greater than us

  49. and have some kind of intimate interaction with this transcendent figure.

  50. This morning, we're actually going to be wrapping up our summer series on the attributes of God or knowing God.

  51. And this morning, we're going to be talking about God's divine transcendence and imminence.

  52. We'll unpack that if you're like, what?

  53. But yeah, that's what we're going to be looking at, this idea that God is both transcendent, exalted,

  54. but also imminent, close to us.

  55. There's this intimacy involved with God.

  56. So let's just jump right into it.

  57. This idea of divine transcendence.

  58. What do we mean by God being transcendent?

  59. The term is actually not a biblical term, but it's more or less like an umbrella term

  60. that kind of captures who God is in terms of his exaltedness,

  61. that he is high and above all of creation.

  62. In fact, it, in a way, describes him as creator.

  63. That God is Lord of all, that there's nobody who comes close to God.

  64. He has complete authority, complete control over everything.

  65. And just to be clear, it's not as if we're talking about God being on a spectrum of transcendence,

  66. where he's at kind of the very end and we're maybe somehow, you know, on the spectrum,

  67. but like farther down this, on this side of the spectrum.

  68. Like we can somehow compare God's transcendence with us.

  69. It's not like that at all.

  70. Actually, God, he is, we can't understand his transcendence on a spectrum even akin to us.

  71. That would somehow imply that God is subject to the same things we're subject to.

  72. We can't think of it that way.

  73. God is completely other than us.

  74. Separate, distinct in everything.

  75. He is completely different than us.

  76. If you have a Bible, you can follow along.

  77. I'll kind of go through some of these texts a bit quickly.

  78. But here's just a small sample size of something that the Bible talks about profusely,

  79. about God's transcendence.

  80. Psalm 57 verse 5 says this,

    Psalms 57:5

  81. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.

  82. Let your glory be over all the earth.

  83. Psalm 97, 9.

  84. For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth.

  85. You are exalted far above all gods.

  86. From Deuteronomy 4, 39, it says,

  87. Know therefore today and lay it to your heart that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath.

  88. There is no other.

  89. And then what Shane read, Isaiah 55, 8 and 9.

  90. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declare the Lord.

  91. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways,

  92. and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  93. You get a bit of a sense that God is, he is not just some kind of like superhuman celebrity.

  94. He is completely other than who we are.

  95. He is completely separate from his creation.

  96. That although we can comprehend God, we can never exhaustively comprehend him, ever, for all of eternity.

  97. This describes God's authority, his dignity, his control over everything.

  98. And although we have dignity and control and authority,

  99. it can't even be compared to who God is.

  100. So it raises an interesting question, because if God is so transcendent,

  101. as we have seen in the scriptures here,

  102. really, how can we know him?

  103. How can we come to know this transcendent God?

  104. I mean, can we even trust the scriptures to describe who God is?

  105. Because, I mean, this is just language.

  106. If God transcends everything, can we truly come to know him?

  107. And the simple answer is yes.

  108. And really, it's because God has chosen to reveal himself to us.

  109. And he does this primarily in two ways.

  110. The first is a natural revelation.

  111. That God has revealed himself in his creation.

  112. We look at creation, and what do we see?

  113. We see that it is orderly.

  114. Why?

  115. Because God is orderly.

  116. We see that, hold on a second,

  117. the creation is pointing to something greater.

  118. So why some of the language around empiricism,

  119. or aspects of certain kind of scientific philosophies,

  120. that really say that what we see is what we get.

  121. Intelligent design.

  122. It fails to comprehend that all of creation

  123. has God's fingerprints all over it.

  124. So, like I mentioned before, creation is orderly.

  125. Why?

  126. Because God is an orderly God.

  127. Creation is incredibly and precisely designed

  128. because God is a perfect creator.

  129. He is intentional in everything he does.

  130. There is a rationality that we can observe

  131. because God is a rational God.

  132. This intelligent design, like I mentioned.

  133. Why?

  134. Because God is intelligent.

  135. And all of a sudden, through the created order,

  136. we can see that there has to be something behind the created order,

  137. something that has created it.

  138. Romans 1, 18-22, it talks about this.

  139. It says,

  140. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  141. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  142. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  143. Verse 19,

  144. For what can be known about God is plain to them

  145. because God has shown it to them

  146. for his invisible attributes,

  147. namely his eternal power and divine nature,

  148. have been clearly perceived

  149. ever since the creation of the world

  150. in the things that have been made.

  151. What we see in creation

  152. proclaims that there is a creator.

  153. But that doesn't tell us the whole story.

  154. That's not God revealing everything about who he is.

  155. Because if we observe creation,

  156. we can't observe that God wants to be friends with us.

  157. We can't observe from creation

  158. that we are sinners

  159. with an inability not to sin,

  160. that we are in deep need of a savior,

  161. that God is triune,

  162. that the second member of the Trinity,

  163. God, the Son of God,

  164. has condescended,

  165. taking on human flesh

  166. to die for the sins of the world.

  167. That is,

  168. that's not what we can derive from nature.

  169. So God, what does he do?

  170. Is he gives us his special revelation.

  171. He proclaims who he is

  172. and the nature of us

  173. and our deep need for a savior.

  174. In the words of scripture,

  175. through his prophets,

  176. through the stories and events

  177. that we can read in the Old and New Testament.

  178. This is God's special revelation.

  179. And through this, we can know him.

  180. So God reveals himself primarily in two different ways.

  181. Kind of a natural revelation

  182. or a general revelation

  183. and then a special

  184. or a salvific type of revelation

  185. that we see in scripture.

  186. So all of that,

  187. all of the very things

  188. that would transcend our ability

  189. to know God,

  190. he presents it to us.

  191. And it's a gift.

  192. It really, truly is wonderful.

  193. All scripture,

  194. it says in 2 Timothy chapter 3,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  195. is God breathed.

  196. It is for us,

  197. it is for our benefit

  198. to know God,

  199. to know ourselves,

  200. to find Jesus,

  201. to find salvation.

  202. So, I talked about God's transcendence

  203. and God's revealing himself to us.

  204. But what about his imminence?

  205. What does this mean?

  206. God's divine imminence

  207. refers to God's presence

  208. in time and space.

  209. He is an involved God.

  210. He is not aloof.

  211. He is not,

  212. kind of the classic illustration

  213. is the watchmaker

  214. who builds a beautiful watch,

  215. winds it up,

  216. leaves it.

  217. The watch,

  218. he has nothing to do

  219. with the watch anymore.

  220. The watch is just self-perpetuating.

  221. Not at all.

  222. God is no absentee landlord.

  223. A couple bits of scripture here

  224. that communicate this.

  225. Leviticus 26, 12,

  226. it says,

  227. and I,

  228. God speaking,

  229. and I will walk among you

  230. and will be your God

  231. and you shall be my people.

  232. Jeremiah 31,

  233. 33 says,

  234. for this is the covenant

  235. that I will make

  236. with the house of Israel

  237. after those days,

  238. declares the Lord.

  239. I will put my law within them

  240. and I will write it on their hearts

  241. and I will be their God

  242. and they shall be my people.

  243. There's this involved care

  244. in these bits of scripture.

  245. This is not an aloof God,

  246. an absentee parent.

  247. This is an involved,

  248. involved God.

  249. God's lordship,

  250. his transcendence,

  251. means that he has authority

  252. and control over all things,

  253. meaning he's connected

  254. and involved in all things.

  255. Matthew 6, 25 to 30,

  256. if you're not a Christian,

  257. this comes from

  258. the Sermon on the Mount

  259. and it is a weighty,

  260. thick, beautiful

  261. three chapters in scripture.

  262. Incredible portion of scripture.

  263. Matthew 6, 25 to 30 says this,

  264. this is Jesus speaking.

  265. Therefore I tell you,

  266. do not be anxious about your life,

  267. what you will eat

  268. or what you will drink,

  269. nor about your body,

  270. what you will put on.

  271. Is not life more than food

  272. and the body more than clothing?

  273. Look at the birds of the air,

  274. they neither sow nor reap

  275. nor gather into barns

  276. and yet your heavenly father

  277. feeds them.

  278. And you,

  279. are you not of more value than they?

  280. And which of you,

  281. by being anxious,

  282. can add a single hour

  283. to his span of life?

  284. And why are you anxious

  285. about clothing?

  286. Consider the lilies of the field,

  287. how they grow,

  288. they neither toil nor spin.

  289. Yet I tell you,

  290. even Solomon in all his glory

  291. was not arrayed like one of these.

  292. But if God so clothes

  293. to the grass of the field,

  294. which today is alive

  295. and tomorrow is thrown

  296. into the oven,

  297. will he not much more clothe you,

  298. O you of little faith?

  299. Does that sound

  300. like an absentee God to you?

  301. It sounds like an imminent God,

  302. a God that is close,

  303. that is involved.

  304. I mean,

  305. that portion alone

  306. can dispel any notion

  307. that God does not care

  308. about your day to day.

  309. That you might be a bit

  310. too insignificant

  311. for God to care.

  312. It is a beautiful,

  313. beautiful portion of scripture

  314. that describes God's involvement

  315. in his creation.

  316. The transcendent God

  317. imminently involved.

  318. It's beautiful.

  319. There's always a closeness,

  320. a nearness,

  321. and a care,

  322. an intimate friendship

  323. between God

  324. and his creation,

  325. and especially

  326. his covenant people,

  327. the people that he calls

  328. to himself,

  329. to a deep relationship with.

  330. So,

  331. friends,

  332. we can't talk about

  333. God's divine transcendence

  334. and divorce it

  335. from his divine imminence.

  336. We can't.

  337. We have to talk about them

  338. in the same breath,

  339. two sides of the same coin.

  340. We have to.

  341. Few ways we can go wrong

  342. if we decide

  343. to divorce these two.

  344. If there's an overemphasis

  345. on God's transcendence

  346. at the expense

  347. of his imminence,

  348. we can become like a,

  349. it's like classical deism,

  350. like I mentioned before,

  351. the illustration

  352. of the watchmaker,

  353. making the watch,

  354. winding it up,

  355. has no more to do with it.

  356. That God is not intimate,

  357. he's not close.

  358. In many ways,

  359. this reflects the God of Islam,

  360. who is not an intimate God,

  361. but is more of this kind of

  362. transcendent type of figure

  363. that is more or less aloof.

  364. We want to be on our guard

  365. against that,

  366. this laissez-faire God.

  367. Somehow that God,

  368. if we get it in our minds

  369. that he doesn't see us,

  370. he doesn't care,

  371. we can get away with certain things

  372. because he's transcendent,

  373. he's not imminent,

  374. he doesn't see us,

  375. it's a big problem.

  376. The other aspect is

  377. if we emphasize his imminence

  378. against his transcendence,

  379. and what ends up happening

  380. is we blur the line

  381. between creation

  382. and the creator.

  383. What happens there

  384. is something similar to,

  385. and again,

  386. these are generalizations,

  387. like a New Age type

  388. of spirituality

  389. or a Buddhist type

  390. of spirituality,

  391. pantheism,

  392. where we end up sharing

  393. divine authority.

  394. We, like I mentioned,

  395. there's no separation,

  396. and what ends up happening

  397. is that human ideologies

  398. take on divine authority.

  399. When that happens,

  400. very dangerous things can happen.

  401. In many ways,

  402. this is the type of emphasis

  403. that Nazism had.

  404. This was something more

  405. than just human ideology.

  406. It was the Aryan takeover.

  407. It was divinely ordained,

  408. which it most certainly was not.

  409. We see some of those hints

  410. in maybe the intensely woke

  411. kind of liberalism that we see.

  412. And I mean,

  413. if you start scratching the surface,

  414. we might see it even

  415. in other places as well.

  416. But we need to be careful

  417. that we don't sacrifice

  418. the transcendence

  419. for just the imminence of God.

  420. You know,

  421. another way we get this wrong

  422. is we,

  423. being made in God's image,

  424. it says in Ecclesiastes chapter 3,

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  425. that God has put eternity

  426. into our hearts.

  427. we have this desire,

  428. and it kind of goes back

  429. to the celebrity culture

  430. a little bit,

  431. example I gave at the beginning.

  432. We have this desire

  433. to touch the transcendent,

  434. to experience

  435. some kind of posterity

  436. beyond this life, right?

  437. A legacy beyond this life.

  438. And yet, at the same time,

  439. we have this deep desire

  440. for intimate connection

  441. with deep friendship.

  442. friendship.

  443. And in God,

  444. we have both of those things,

  445. perfectly.

  446. But what we do is

  447. we don't look to

  448. the perfectly transcendent,

  449. imminent God.

  450. We look to things,

  451. or people,

  452. or reputation,

  453. or money,

  454. or a house,

  455. or whatever it may be

  456. in place of God

  457. that we think

  458. will somehow give us

  459. a legacy,

  460. will connect us

  461. to the eternal,

  462. and yet bring us

  463. great peace,

  464. great connection.

  465. And those things

  466. can't satisfy.

  467. The Bible calls this

  468. idolatry.

  469. Putting in place

  470. a person,

  471. or a thing,

  472. in the place of God.

  473. Those things

  474. will never hold up.

  475. They will never be

  476. a suitable replacement

  477. for God.

  478. They are doomed to fail

  479. because things rust,

  480. and things decompose,

  481. and reputations

  482. don't last.

  483. Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  484. just actually before

  485. the portion of Scripture

  486. we just read,

  487. verses 19 to 24,

  488. Jesus says this,

  489. Do not lay up for yourselves

  490. treasures on earth.

  491. And when he's talking

  492. about laying up treasures,

  493. he is talking about

  494. finding ultimate satisfaction.

  495. Because treasure itself

  496. isn't necessarily bad.

  497. Anyways, let me continue.

  498. Where moth and rust destroy,

  499. and where thieves break in

  500. and steal,

  501. but lay up for yourselves

  502. treasures in heaven,

  503. where neither moth

  504. nor rust destroys,

  505. and where thieves

  506. do not break in and steal.

  507. For where your treasure is,

  508. there your heart

  509. will be also.

  510. Verse 24,

  511. it says you can't serve

  512. two masters.

  513. Either he will hate

  514. the one

  515. and love the other,

  516. or he will be devoted

  517. to the one

  518. and despise the other.

  519. You cannot serve

  520. God and money.

  521. You cannot find

  522. eternal transcendence

  523. and eternal imminence

  524. in stuff.

  525. or in people.

  526. And you have to ask God

  527. to reveal this

  528. in your heart

  529. because we are

  530. very, very clever people.

  531. We mask our idols

  532. really, really well.

  533. We deny that we have idols

  534. really, really well.

  535. We do.

  536. But when we find

  537. our hope

  538. in the very things

  539. that will let us down,

  540. it's a big problem.

  541. By the way,

  542. this is not a call

  543. for complete,

  544. like disconnection

  545. from the world.

  546. We are involved

  547. in the world completely,

  548. so I'm not advocating

  549. for a type of like

  550. disconnect.

  551. But ask yourself

  552. the question,

  553. am I finding

  554. my eternal hope

  555. in my spouse,

  556. in my friend,

  557. in my children,

  558. in my reputation,

  559. my job,

  560. my things,

  561. whatever it may be?

  562. Another way

  563. we can get it wrong,

  564. and this is especially

  565. the case for Christians,

  566. is we can focus

  567. on God

  568. as being the transcendent.

  569. I kind of touched

  570. on this a little bit.

  571. And it's like

  572. our hearts are cold.

  573. We don't worship God.

  574. We don't seek God's face.

  575. And that might be

  576. for a whole host of reasons.

  577. Because you've been

  578. let down by a church leader

  579. or you've grown callous

  580. from a hurt

  581. and you're angry at God.

  582. So you kind of go

  583. through the motions

  584. of recognizing God

  585. and his transcendence.

  586. But I mean,

  587. you couldn't care less

  588. if your heart is warmed.

  589. On the flip side,

  590. and this is the case,

  591. and I think I can speak

  592. on this because I come

  593. from a bit of a charismatic

  594. background,

  595. the ultra-charismatics

  596. or the charismatics

  597. can have a tendency

  598. to emphasize

  599. the imminence of God,

  600. the presence of God.

  601. At the expense

  602. of the truth of Scripture

  603. about who he is.

  604. And all of a sudden,

  605. what drives

  606. their understanding

  607. of God?

  608. It's actually experience.

  609. It's not the truth

  610. of Scripture.

  611. It's not the transcendence

  612. of God.

  613. And you see,

  614. in worship,

  615. as we interact with God,

  616. we have to just keep in mind

  617. that God is both

  618. transcendent and imminent.

  619. Friends,

  620. the reality is

  621. your heart will grow cold

  622. if you're charismatic.

  623. It will,

  624. if you're seeking

  625. after a feeling.

  626. By the way,

  627. feelings,

  628. emoting,

  629. however you emote,

  630. having emotions

  631. is a good thing

  632. in worship.

  633. Getting goosebumps

  634. because, like,

  635. you're singing a praise song

  636. and you're just

  637. feeling like you might be

  638. touching heaven,

  639. there's nothing wrong

  640. with that.

  641. But that

  642. is bound to grow cold.

  643. It's bound to.

  644. So what do you do?

  645. Do you just give up?

  646. No,

  647. you feed on the truth

  648. of who God is.

  649. You feed on it.

  650. You feed on it.

  651. If it feels like

  652. you're going through

  653. the motions

  654. when you do

  655. your Bible reading

  656. or if you come to church,

  657. I'll say this.

  658. This is,

  659. I don't know if this is

  660. a good thing for a pastor

  661. to say,

  662. but hear me out.

  663. Go through the motions.

  664. Go through it.

  665. Go through the motions

  666. and even if you don't feel it,

  667. do it

  668. because it's not

  669. going to last forever.

  670. You're not going to go

  671. through the motions forever

  672. and there's a consistency

  673. and a faithfulness

  674. that's there.

  675. And you can cry out to God,

  676. Lord,

  677. change my heart,

  678. warm my heart,

  679. help me not to disbelieve.

  680. And listen,

  681. God,

  682. it's a beautiful thing

  683. to push through.

  684. It really is.

  685. Remember,

  686. we are marathon runners

  687. in this,

  688. right?

  689. In this life.

  690. Whether God gives us

  691. 90 years,

  692. 100 years,

  693. or he takes us home early,

  694. it's a marathon.

  695. And sometimes,

  696. you know,

  697. we don't run too well.

  698. And if you are

  699. the type of person

  700. that is just kind of fine

  701. with potentially

  702. going through the motions

  703. or your spirituality

  704. is almost stoic,

  705. push into it.

  706. Don't be the type of person

  707. that is satisfied

  708. with just having

  709. really rock-solid theology

  710. and yet your heart

  711. and your life

  712. is not moved

  713. closer towards God.

  714. embrace the divine

  715. transcendence of God

  716. and seek after

  717. his closeness

  718. and his presence.

  719. How can we interact

  720. with God?

  721. This transcendent God?

  722. Well,

  723. here's a few ways.

  724. One thing I love about

  725. our communion liturgy,

  726. but communion especially,

  727. is that it is

  728. the transcendent God

  729. inviting us

  730. to dine with him

  731. at his table.

  732. The first communion

  733. was at Passover.

  734. A wonderful,

  735. wonderful remembrance

  736. of God's deliverance

  737. of Israel from Egypt.

  738. And how do we remember?

  739. How do we take joy

  740. in all this?

  741. We eat.

  742. We feast.

  743. And this is what communion is.

  744. In our liturgy,

  745. we will say

  746. in our liturgy,

  747. holy,

  748. holy,

  749. holy,

  750. Lord God of hosts,

  751. heaven and earth

  752. are full of your glory.

  753. And what is that

  754. if not the declaration

  755. of God's transcendence

  756. in heaven?

  757. We recognize it.

  758. But what else do we do?

  759. We come to his table

  760. and we partake

  761. of Christ himself.

  762. That we feed on him

  763. in our hearts

  764. by faith

  765. with thanksgiving.

  766. Intimately connected

  767. to God.

  768. Another way

  769. we connect with God

  770. is through his word

  771. absolutely.

  772. His special revelation

  773. to us.

  774. His truth revealed to us.

  775. It's also being

  776. with his people.

  777. Fellowshiping

  778. with his people.

  779. And this is why

  780. COVID has really,

  781. the restrictions

  782. have been really detrimental

  783. to the life

  784. of the church.

  785. Because,

  786. I mean,

  787. Zoom has been excellent

  788. in many different ways,

  789. but you can't fellowship

  790. in the same type of way.

  791. You can't connect

  792. with people.

  793. And God is amongst

  794. his people.

  795. He is.

  796. That's how we connect

  797. with God.

  798. That's an aspect

  799. of how we connect

  800. with God.

  801. God,

  802. through your friend,

  803. will encourage you.

  804. God,

  805. through your brother

  806. or sister,

  807. will call you out,

  808. hopefully in a gentle,

  809. kind way.

  810. In a private way,

  811. ideally,

  812. not publicly.

  813. But,

  814. you know,

  815. will reveal sin

  816. in your life.

  817. And is that not God

  818. working through his people?

  819. We feast on God's word,

  820. like I mentioned.

  821. We partake at the table.

  822. We fellowship with one another.

  823. We pray.

  824. If you guys

  825. haven't

  826. some kind of

  827. prayer structure

  828. type of thing,

  829. and maybe structure

  830. is not your thing,

  831. you're more of a spontaneous person,

  832. that's fine.

  833. I encourage you guys

  834. to give

  835. Praying the Daily Offices

  836. a go.

  837. There's some apps,

  838. and I owe

  839. one person in particular

  840. an email

  841. with a couple apps

  842. on it,

  843. but there's apps

  844. that will help you

  845. and guide you.

  846. You can get a book

  847. of common prayer.

  848. But it's just a way

  849. to pray

  850. and engage

  851. with the scriptures.

  852. Ultimately,

  853. Jesus is the greatest example

  854. of God's divine transcendence

  855. and God's divine imminence.

  856. Jesus,

  857. the second member

  858. of the Trinity,

  859. condescends,

  860. wraps himself

  861. in humanity,

  862. becomes enfleshed,

  863. fully man,

  864. and yet fully God,

  865. fully imminent,

  866. but fully transcendent.

  867. Listen to a couple

  868. of these scriptures.

  869. Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7:14

  870. verse 14,

  871. Therefore the Lord himself

  872. will give you a sign.

  873. Behold,

  874. the virgin shall conceive

  875. and bear a son

  876. and shall call his name

  877. Emmanuel.

  878. A lovely Christmas passage.

  879. What is Emmanuel?

  880. God with us.

  881. John 1, 14,

  882. that George read,

  883. And the word,

  884. Jesus,

  885. the God,

  886. the Son of God,

  887. the second member

  888. of the Trinity,

  889. became flesh

  890. and dwelt among us

  891. and we have seen

  892. his glory,

  893. glory as of the only Son

  894. from the Father,

  895. full of grace and truth.

  896. God,

  897. transcend,

  898. the transcendent God

  899. becomes so intimate,

  900. so involved,

  901. that he dies

  902. on our behalf,

  903. on a cross,

  904. a cross made

  905. by human hands

  906. for our sins,

  907. so that we might have

  908. this intimate relationship

  909. with the transcendent God,

  910. that we don't have to

  911. live a life

  912. of striving

  913. or a life

  914. riddled with guilt,

  915. that we can embrace

  916. the transcendent,

  917. perfect,

  918. the perfect transcendent God.

  919. We can know

  920. that our deepest longings

  921. are met in him.

  922. We can.

  923. He will not leave us

  924. or forsake us.

  925. And isn't this

  926. an interesting bit

  927. because,

  928. and I'll close with this,

  929. God connecting

  930. to his people

  931. says this often,

  932. and you can read

  933. through it

  934. in scripture,

  935. that God constantly

  936. says to his people,

  937. I will be with you.

  938. I will be with you.

  939. I will be with you.

  940. He says it to Abraham.

  941. He says it to Joseph.

  942. He says it to Moses.

  943. He says it to Israel.

  944. He says it to his church.

  945. He says it to us

  946. this morning.

  947. If you are in Christ Jesus,

  948. God says this.

  949. He says,

  950. I am with you.

  951. That is intimate talk.

  952. That is close talk.

  953. That is caring talk.

  954. That is involved talk.

  955. That is patient talk.

  956. Loving talk.

  957. Matthew 28, verse 20.

    Matthew 28:20

  958. What does Jesus say

  959. to his disciples

  960. at the end

  961. of this gospel text?

  962. It says,

  963. And lo,

  964. I am with you always

  965. to the end of the age.

  966. We can go through

  967. ups and downs.

  968. We can go through

  969. seasons where we

  970. feel like we are

  971. on the verge

  972. of apostasy.

  973. And he will hold us tight.

  974. If you are

  975. in Christ,

  976. if you confess

  977. your faith to him,

  978. his grip on you

  979. is very,

  980. very tight.

  981. even when you are

  982. not quite gripping

  983. God at all.

  984. That if you have been

  985. baptized and have

  986. confessed your sins,

  987. there is a promise

  988. on your life

  989. from God Almighty

  990. saying,

  991. I will always be

  992. intimate with you.

  993. I will always care for you.

  994. I will always take care of you.

  995. Always.

  996. Always.

  997. And those are the types

  998. of truths

  999. we need to feed on.

  1000. And if you are

  1001. considering the Christian faith,

1002. whether it's for the first time

  1003. or maybe you're

1004. giving the church a try,

1005. giving the faith a try,

1006. this is what it boils down to.

  1007. That God,

  1008. through Jesus,

  1009. has made a way

1010. for all of our longings

  1011. to be met,

  1012. all of our sins

1013. to be taken care of,

1014. so that we can have

  1015. fellowship

  1016. with the transcendent God

  1017. in a very,

  1018. very intimate way.

  1019. Friends,

  1020. like I said before,

  1021. do not grow weary.

  1022. Push through

  1023. if you're feeling

  1024. cold-hearted.

  1025. And it doesn't mean

  1026. you have to emote

  1027. a certain way.

  1028. You don't have to

  1029. put up your hands

  1030. during worship.

  1031. Although,

  1032. the rousing worship

  1033. we had today,

  1034. actually,

1035. I thought it was great,

  1036. George,

  1037. by the way.

  1038. You know how you

  1039. emote,

  1040. how your heart

  1041. gets warm.

  1042. And that's awesome.

  1043. It really is.

  1044. Whatever way

  1045. you kind of show

  1046. your emotions,

  1047. but like,

  1048. press into it.

  1049. Don't give up.

1050. God will not give up

  1051. on you.

  1052. Let's pray.

  1053. Lord God in heaven,

  1054. we thank you

  1055. that you are

  1056. completely other

  1057. than us.

  1058. You are transcendent.

  1059. That we aren't

  1060. even on a spectrum

  1061. with you.

  1062. We don't share

  1063. a spectrum with you.

  1064. That you are

  1065. completely other than

  1066. in your authority,

  1067. in your dignity,

  1068. in your control,

  1069. in your majesty,

  1070. in your lordship.

  1071. And yet,

  1072. you are so intimately

  1073. close to us.

  1074. That you desire

  1075. our fellowship

  1076. so much so

  1077. that your son

  1078. dies on the cross

  1079. for sins

  1080. that he didn't commit.

  1081. So that we might

  1082. be made right

  1083. with you.

  1084. Lord,

  1085. draw us closer

  1086. to yourself.

  1087. Help us to be

  1088. ever aware

  1089. that you are

  1090. both a transcendent God

  1091. and an intimate,

  1092. intimate God

  1093. as well.

  1094. Lord,

  1095. thank you

  1096. that you invite us

  1097. into friendship

  1098. with you.

1099. We pray in Jesus' name.

  1100. Amen.

  1101. Amen.

  1102. Thank you.
