  1. Now, again, if you have your Bibles, perhaps you can turn with me to Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  2. We're going to read from verses 13 to 34.

  3. That's on page 1044.

  4. And we find Jesus, again, teaching about anxiety.

  5. Last week it was the fear of man.

  6. This time it's different anxieties connected to money.

  7. We're going to think about what it means to be rich towards God.

  8. Let's again hear God's Word.

  9. Luke chapter 12 at verse 13.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  10. Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,

  11. Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

  12. Jesus replied, Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?

  13. Then he said to them, Watch out.

  14. Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.

  15. Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.

  16. And he told them this parable.

  17. The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.

  18. He thought to himself, What shall I do?

  19. I have no place to store my crops.

  20. Then he said, This is what I'll do.

  21. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones.

  22. And there I will store my surplus grain.

  23. And I'll say to myself, You have plenty of grain laid up for many years.

  24. Take life easy.

  25. Eat, drink, and be merry.

  26. But God said to him, You fool.

  27. This very night your life will be demanded from you.

  28. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?

  29. This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves,

  30. but is not rich towards God.

  31. Then Jesus said to his disciples,

  32. Therefore I tell you,

  33. Do not worry about your life, what you will eat,

  34. or about your body, what you will wear.

  35. For life is more than food,

  36. and a body more than clothes.

  37. Consider the ravens.

  38. They do not sow or reap.

  39. They have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them.

  40. And how much more valuable you are than birds.

  41. Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?

  42. Since you cannot do this very little thing,

  43. why do you worry about the rest?

  44. Consider how the wild flowers grow.

  45. They do not labor or spin.

  46. Yet I tell you,

  47. not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

  48. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field,

  49. which is here today,

  50. and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,

  51. how much more will he clothe you,

  52. you of little faith?

  53. And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink.

  54. Do not worry about it.

  55. For the pagan world runs after all such things,

  56. and your father knows that you need them.

  57. But seek his kingdom,

  58. and these things will be given to you as well.

  59. Do not be afraid, little flock,

  60. for your father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

  61. Sell your possessions and give to the poor.

  62. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out,

  63. a treasure in heaven that will never fail,

  64. where no thief comes near,

  65. and no moth destroys.

  66. For where your treasure is,

  67. there your heart will be also.

  68. Amen.

  69. So let's begin by asking ourselves a question.

  70. What is your relationship with money and possessions like?

  71. Because we all have one.

  72. So whether we are living off the bank of mum and dads,

  73. whether we are trying to make our student loans last to the end of the term,

  74. whether we find ourselves building a career and perhaps thinking about property,

  75. whether we're at the stage of retirement and worrying about how our pensions will last,

  76. whether we find ourselves today comfortable financially,

  77. or whether the cost of living crisis has hit you hard,

  78. all of us have some kind of relationship to money.

  79. What does it say about us?

  80. What does it say about our heart?

  81. What does it do to our heart when we have money,

  82. and also when we struggle for money?

  83. Money was a topic that Jesus spoke on often.

  84. His most frequent warnings were around the topic of money.

  85. And Luke, who's very concerned about rich and poor and wealth,

  86. emphasizes Jesus' teaching.

  87. So in Luke chapter 9 verse 25,

    Luke 9:25

  88. we have these striking words,

  89. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world,

  90. and yet lose or forfeit their very sale?

  91. As Jesus continues his journey to Jerusalem,

  92. he will meet a rich young man who refuses to follow Jesus

  93. because he loves his money too much.

  94. And Jesus will say,

  95. How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.

  96. It's easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle.

  97. So money is something that obviously is essential to life.

  98. The Bible reminds us that money is something that can be used to bless others,

  99. should be used to bless others.

  100. But there's also this warning,

  101. this recurring warning that Jesus presents,

  102. that money can become for us a distraction.

  103. Money can, in the first instance,

  104. keep us from seeing that we need God,

  105. from recognizing that only God can truly satisfy,

  106. or it can take all of our energy,

  107. all of our heart away from serving Jesus

  108. because we have anxiety about,

  109. will I have enough money to provide for myself?

  110. So if our wallets stand as a window into our hearts and our souls,

  111. Jesus wants to say two things to us.

  112. First, he wants to warn us.

  113. He warns us to guard against greed.

  114. And secondly, he wants to encourage his people to say,

  115. I am the answer to your anxieties about money and indeed about everything.

  116. So let's look at verses 13 to 21 together,

  117. where Jesus says to guard against all kinds of greed.

  118. So we find that often, don't we,

  119. our newspaper headlines,

  120. they delight in exposing greed.

  121. You know, corporate bonuses,

  122. in hard times,

  123. those who are found guilty of stealing from charities,

  124. you know, some of those crazy football transfer deals,

  125. the newspapers delight to expose that kind of greed.

  126. But there's also the more acceptable forms

  127. that we perhaps hardly even spot.

  128. How many people find themselves chasing a career only for the wage that it offers,

  129. rather than because they feel it's a good fit for them?

  130. Or how many people find themselves trapped in this consumerism cycle

  131. of earning or borrowing simply to spend on the next thing and the next thing?

  132. Or we concern ourselves for looking after our own future,

  133. and it prevents us from open-handed generosity.

  134. What's the case here?

  135. Look at verses 13 to 15.

  136. Jesus is speaking to a great crowd,

  137. and someone from the crowd says to him,

  138. Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

  139. Jesus, judge in my favor.

  140. Jesus, I want to make sure that I get a good deal.

  141. Here is a self-interested brother

  142. who is risking dividing the family

  143. for the sake of making sure he has gain.

  144. And he says,

  145. Jesus, I want you to judge in my case and in my favor.

  146. Jesus will judge.

  147. But not on property law.

  148. Jesus has something far, far bigger.

  149. Jesus wants to judge his heart and our hearts.

  150. And Jesus brings a judgment on,

  151. here is what really matters.

  152. Verse 15,

  153. Watch out.

  154. Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.

  155. Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.

  156. And from this conversation from the crowd,

  157. Jesus then goes on to tell a story,

  158. a parable to illustrate his point.

  159. It's the ultimate,

  160. you can't take it with you story.

  161. The plot is very simple.

  162. A farmer has some surplus wealth.

  163. That leads to a decision

  164. towards selfish spending.

  165. To gaining more and more,

  166. imagining it will bring security and comfort.

  167. But that dream becomes a nightmare

  168. as judgment comes

  169. and his life is gone.

  170. Into his story,

  171. Jesus presents the reality of mortality and eternity.

  172. He wants to cut through that chasing after wealth

  173. to remind us,

  174. the one with the most toys,

  175. the one with the most comfort,

  176. the one with the most experiences

  177. does not win

  178. if we're not rich towards God.

  179. And notice that Jesus takes us

  180. to the biblical category

  181. of wisdom and folly.

  182. Verse 20,

  183. God said to him,

  184. You fool.

  185. A fool in the Bible,

  186. Old Testament wisdom,

  187. Proverbs,

  188. Psalms,

  189. the fool is someone who says in his heart,

  190. there is no God.

  191. Or that God doesn't see

  192. or care about what I do with my life.

  193. And so Jesus pitches this story

  194. in the context of Old Testament wisdom.

  195. So we're going to use,

  196. actually,

  197. some Old Testament wisdom

  198. to ask ourselves for questions

  199. in the light of this story

  200. and in light of Jesus' warning

  201. to guard against greed.

  202. Here's the first question

  203. to ask ourselves,

  204. Who gets the credit?

  205. So in Proverbs chapter 30

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  206. and verse 9,

  207. there is this wise request,

  208. Give me neither poverty nor riches.

  209. And of riches he says,

  210. Otherwise I may have too much

  211. and disown you and say,

  212. Who is the Lord?

  213. If we have too much money,

  214. it can lead us away from God.

  215. Proverbs 3 verse 9 also says,

    Proverbs 3:9

  216. Honor the Lord with your wealth

  217. and with the firstfruits of your harvest.

  218. In this parable,

  219. who gave the wealth?

  220. Verse 16,

  221. The ground of a certain rich man

  222. yielded an abundant harvest.

  223. God gave the wealth.

  224. God caused the growth.

  225. God gives every good gift.

  226. And we are invited to serve

  227. as stewards of God's gifts

  228. to use them for God's glory.

  229. But notice that this man

  230. is absolutely self-centered,

  231. not God-centered.

  232. Listen to the conversation

  233. he has with himself.

  234. What shall I do?

  235. I have no place to store my crops.

  236. This is what I'll do.

  237. I'll tear down my barns.

  238. I'll build bigger ones.

  239. And there I'll store my surplus grain.

  240. It's all about himself.

  241. The danger of wealth and greed

  242. is that it can lead us to self-trust.

  243. I earned this on the basis of my skills.

  244. I received this wealth

  245. because of my hard work.

  246. Forgetting God gave those skills.

  247. He gave our abilities.

  248. It is that danger

  249. that we can enjoy God's gifts

  250. in the world that he created

  251. while we reject God the giver.

  252. Instead, we're called to a better way

  253. to love God with our money,

  254. to treat it as his and not ours,

  255. and to send it out

  256. on the things that he loves.

  257. Second question,

  258. what's my bottom line?

  259. Proverbs 11 verse 26

    Proverbs 11:26

  260. says,

  261. people curse the one who hoards grain,

  262. but they pray God's blessing

  263. on the one who is willing to sell.

  264. The way Jesus tells this parable

  265. invites us to recognize

  266. that because of this man's greed,

  267. he has isolated himself

  268. from others.

  269. And often, greed cuts like a knife

  270. through human relationships.

  271. His only thought is,

  272. how can I build those bigger barns?

  273. How can I get a bigger stockpile

  274. to look after myself?

  275. Not thinking,

  276. who else can benefit?

  277. His bottom line is,

  278. let me look after number one.

  279. It's my comfort that matters

  280. more than my community.

  281. Indeed, they can curse me if they want

  282. because I'm sitting secure here

  283. in my nice cozy castle.

  284. God has a different bottom line,

  285. doesn't he?

  286. God gives us a different guide

  287. for how we are to use our money.

  288. We are, as Jesus says,

  289. to guard against greed,

  290. to not spend or save selfishly,

  291. rather to use money

  292. so that others can live well,

  293. so that we can seek to extend God's kingdom,

  294. that we might follow God's pattern,

  295. God the great giver,

  296. God the one who gives us life,

  297. God who ultimately in the gospel

  298. gave us his son's life.

  299. A third question to consider

  300. from this story is this,

  301. where is my identity found?

  302. Again, in Proverbs chapter 10, verse 15,

    Proverbs 10:15

  303. we read there,

  304. the wealth of the rich

  305. is their fortified city.

  306. That's a negative assessment.

  307. Rich people can so easily think,

  308. here is my security

  309. because I've got plenty

  310. laid up for myself.

  311. And we know it's a negative assessment

  312. because all through the Bible,

  313. God presents himself

  314. as the refuge

  315. that people should seek to run to.

  316. But in this parable,

  317. we have a man who preaches

  318. a false gospel to himself.

  319. This wealth that God has given,

  320. this is the key to my security

  321. and to my comfort

  322. and to my joy.

  323. I'll say to myself,

  324. you have plenty of grain

  325. laid up for many years.

  326. Take life easy,

  327. eat, drink, and be merry.

  328. The key to life,

  329. having money.

  330. Money spins a web of lies.

  331. Money tells us it can satisfy

  332. our longings.

  333. But actually,

  334. we often find ourselves enslaved

  335. because we never get enough.

  336. And then occasionally,

  337. perhaps in the newspapers,

  338. you read the stories,

  339. the interviews of those

  340. who do get enough,

  341. who do become the multimillionaires.

  342. And what we find is often,

  343. they too feel emptiness

  344. and a sense of longing.

  345. Money says to us,

  346. listen,

  347. trust in me,

  348. I can give you security.

  349. But we know that money can come

  350. and money can go.

  351. The banking crisis

  352. in the early 2000s

  353. brought with it

  354. a huge spike

  355. in suicides

  356. of guys

  357. head up,

  358. high up

  359. in the banking industry.

  360. Their life

  361. had been completely

  362. bound up

  363. with their wealth

  364. and it did not give security.

  365. Money would say to us,

  366. I am the only savior you need.

  367. If you have me,

  368. you have the good life.

  369. And we can so easily

  370. believe that lie,

  371. we can be like children

  372. building sandcastles

  373. on the beach

  374. all the while

  375. ignoring the reality

  376. of the waves

  377. of uncertainty,

  378. of death,

  379. and of the judgment

  380. of God.

  381. And Jesus warns us,

  382. don't build your life

  383. and identity

  384. on money and stuff.

  385. You cannot take it with you.

  386. It can so easily

  387. be lost

  388. and it does not

  389. give ultimate security.

  390. Question four

  391. is the question,

  392. what am I

  393. living for?

  394. Proverbs 11,

  395. verse four

  396. takes us

  397. in the same direction

  398. as the conclusion

  399. of Jesus' parable.

  400. Wealth is worthless

  401. in the day of wrath,

  402. but righteousness

  403. delivers from death.

  404. Go to verse 20,

  405. verse 21.

  406. God says,

  407. you fool

  408. this very night,

  409. your life

  410. will be demanded

  411. from you.

  412. This is how it will be

  413. with whoever

  414. stores up things

  415. for themselves

  416. but is not rich

  417. towards God.

  418. The judgment

  419. falls.

  420. This man has

  421. distracted himself

  422. to death.

  423. He has chosen

  424. to live for greed

  425. and not God.

  426. His energy

  427. and his heart

  428. has gone

  429. to bigger barns,

  430. bigger piles,

  431. greater wealth

  432. and comfort

  433. only to discover

  434. that what he was chasing

  435. was fool's gold.

  436. And so Jesus

  437. gives this story

  438. as a loving

  439. warning

  440. that wealth

  441. so often

  442. becomes an idol

  443. in our heart,

  444. becomes the key

  445. to our happiness,

  446. our security,

  447. our hopes

  448. and dreams.

  449. He reminds us

  450. that wealth

  451. can isolate us

  452. as it makes us selfish

  453. and not generous.

  454. He says to us,

  455. your wealth

  456. can be dangerous

  457. so you need to be

  458. on guard

  459. because this life

  460. is not

  461. all

  462. there is.

  463. and then from there

  464. he continues

  465. to talk

  466. about money

  467. but to treat it

  468. in a very different way

  469. because there's

  470. a different audience.

  471. His attention

  472. now turns

  473. to his followers

  474. and he seeks

  475. to answer

  476. the anxieties

  477. of his followers

  478. in verses 22

  479. to 34.

  480. verse 22

  481. then Jesus

  482. said to his disciples

  483. therefore I tell you

  484. do not worry

  485. about your life

  486. what you will eat

  487. or about your body

  488. what you will wear.

  489. So Jesus knows

  490. that worries

  491. about wealth

  492. can be a possible

  493. barrier

  494. for any follower

  495. of Jesus.

  496. For example

  497. we might

  498. find ourselves

  499. saying

  500. well I would love

  501. to serve

  502. but first of all

  503. I need to make sure

  504. I've got my own

  505. personal security

  506. sorted out.

  507. that we do

  508. want to follow

  509. Jesus our master

  510. but we have this

  511. battle in our heart

  512. where money also

  513. wants to be our master.

  514. Where we can easily

  515. have that tendency

  516. to be self-serving

  517. rather than

  518. sacrificial

  519. when it comes

  520. to our money.

  521. And so Jesus

  522. wants to deal

  523. with those

  524. anxieties

  525. and to invite

  526. trust.

  527. He doesn't want

  528. fears about

  529. paying the bills.

  530. He doesn't want

  531. fears about

  532. us providing

  533. for ourselves

  534. and our future

  535. to take our energy

  536. to take our hearts

  537. away from him.

  538. He doesn't want

  539. us to overly

  540. worry about

  541. the cost

  542. of supporting

  543. church mission.

  544. He doesn't want

  545. our hearts

  546. to be gripped

  547. by fear

  548. as we're called

  549. to spend

  550. on others.

  551. He wants

  552. to free us

  553. from those anxieties

  554. so that we're

  555. ready to follow

  556. Jesus.

  557. This Savior,

  558. the Savior who,

  559. remember,

  560. left the glory

  561. and honor of

  562. heaven,

  563. to come and

  564. to be born

  565. in poverty,

  566. to live in

  567. humility,

  568. to be homeless,

  569. and to be

  570. stripped of

  571. everything

  572. as he died

  573. to save us.

  574. How can we be

  575. ready to follow

  576. this Jesus

  577. as our Savior?

  578. Two things

  579. to remember.

  580. First,

  581. remember,

  582. this is your

  583. Father's world,

  584. so trust him

  585. to provide.

  586. When Jesus says

  587. in verse 22,

  588. I tell you,

  589. do not worry

  590. about your life,

  591. what you'll eat,

  592. or about your body,

  593. what you'll wear,

  594. for life is more

  595. than food and the body

  596. more than clothes.

  597. He's not saying

  598. be reckless,

  599. he's not saying

  600. don't make provision

  601. for yourself,

  602. but he is saying

  603. do not worry

  604. excessively

  605. about those things,

  606. about the physical

  607. stuff of life,

  608. don't let them

  609. take your energy

  610. and activity

  611. as disciples,

  612. keep the right

  613. perspective.

  614. In that sense,

  615. that life is bigger

  616. than this life,

  617. life is more

  618. than stuff,

  619. but also,

  620. remember

  621. who we belong to.

  622. Your creator

  623. is your

  624. Father.

  625. And so,

  626. we're invited

  627. to live

  628. with trust

  629. in him.

  630. So,

  631. Jesus says,

  632. look around.

  633. Verse 24,

  634. look at the ravens,

  635. consider the ravens,

  636. they don't sow

  637. or reap,

  638. they have no

  639. storeroom

  640. or barn,

  641. yet God

  642. feeds them.

  643. The ravens

  644. were a bird

  645. that were

  646. unclean

  647. in Jesus'

  648. day,

  649. they had

  650. no value,

  651. you weren't

  652. allowed to eat

  653. them,

  654. you couldn't

  655. sacrifice

  656. them,

  657. they had

  658. no value,

  659. but God

  660. feeds them,

  661. they don't

  662. need to

  663. stress,

  664. they don't

  665. need to

  666. busy themselves

  667. storing up,

  668. God

  669. provides.

  670. Jesus says,

  671. how much

  672. more valuable

  673. are my

  674. children

  675. than

  676. ravens?

  677. Look around,

  678. look at the

  679. wildflowers,

  680. they don't

  681. labor or

  682. spin,

  683. verse 27,

  684. yet I tell

  685. you,

  686. not even

  687. Solomon in

  688. all his

  689. splendor

  690. was dressed

  691. like one

  692. of thieves.

  693. Think about

  694. the wildflowers,

  695. think for

  696. those of

  697. you who

  698. were in

  699. Edinburgh

  700. in the

  701. spring,

  702. about the

  703. cherry blossoms

  704. in the

  705. meadows,

  706. beautiful

  707. explosion of

  708. color,

  709. God provides

  710. fragile beauty

  711. for these

  712. wildflowers

  713. that are,

  714. as it were,

  715. here today

  716. and gone

  717. tomorrow,

  718. and if God

  719. clothes the

  720. flowers of

  721. the field,

  722. how much

  723. more will

  724. he take care

  725. of us,

  726. because we

  727. have more

  728. value to

  729. him.

  730. Look

  731. around,

  732. verse 29

  733. to 31,

  734. look around

  735. at the

  736. pagans,

  737. look at

  738. those who

  739. don't know

  740. God as

  741. creator,

  742. and learn,

  743. do not set

  744. your heart on

  745. what you'll

  746. eat or drink,

  747. do not worry

  748. about it,

  749. for the

  750. pagan world

  751. runs after

  752. all such

  753. things,

  754. and your

  755. father knows

  756. that you

  757. need them.

  758. If you

  759. don't know

  760. God as

  761. father,

  762. Jesus says,

  763. look at the

  764. pagans,

  765. they've got

  766. all that

  767. stress because

  768. they're having

  769. to rely on

  770. themselves,

  771. or they're

  772. chasing and

  773. they're grabbing

  774. because they

  775. act like this

  776. life is all

  777. there is,

  778. you know

  779. something different,

  780. you know a

  781. better way,

  782. you know your

  783. father,

  784. you know this

  785. is his

  786. world,

  787. he knows

  788. what we

  789. need.

  790. And because

  791. that's true,

  792. verse 31,

  793. seek his

  794. kingdom,

  795. put his

  796. kingdom first,

  797. put following

  798. Jesus first,

  799. and these

  800. things will be

  801. given to you

  802. as well,

  803. learn to

  804. rest in

  805. the care

  806. of God

  807. for our

  808. today and

  809. tomorrow,

  810. and live

  811. as a

  812. disciple of

  813. Jesus.

  814. Get the

  815. balance,

  816. this is how

  817. Jesus taught

  818. us to pray,

  819. remember in

  820. Luke 11,

  821. the Lord's

  822. prayer,

  823. we seek

  824. the kingdom

  825. first,

  826. and we

  827. ask our

  828. father for

  829. our daily

  830. bread.

  831. Thinking about

  832. sections like

  833. this always

  834. make me

  835. think of

  836. George

  837. Muller.

  838. George

  839. Muller is a

  840. wonderful example

  841. of this,

  842. he was a

  843. guy in

  844. the 19th

  845. century who

  846. oversaw

  847. multiple

  848. orphanages in

  849. the south

  850. of England,

  851. looking after

  852. tens of

  853. thousands of

  854. children over

  855. a number of

  856. years,

  857. and the

  858. amazing thing

  859. about George

  860. Muller is he

  861. never made

  862. public the

  863. needs that

  864. those orphanages

  865. had,

  866. and there

  867. were many

  868. times where

  869. they struggled

  870. to pay the

  871. bills,

  872. many times

  873. they worried

  874. about how

  875. they would

  876. feed the

  877. children,

  878. but what

  879. he did is

  880. he prayed,

  881. and he

  882. encouraged people

  883. to pray,

  884. and to read

  885. his story is

  886. to read amazing

  887. story after

  888. story of

  889. God's

  890. providing,

  891. people being

  892. moved in

  893. their hearts

  894. from all

  895. around the

  896. world to

  897. be generous,

  898. God cares,

  899. this is our

  900. father's world,

  901. trust him to

  902. provide.

  903. If we're

  904. anxious about

  905. the cost of

  906. living,

  907. and that

  908. seems all

  909. consuming,

  910. if we're

  911. anxious about

  912. the cost of

  913. serving Jesus,

  914. and we

  915. wonder can we

  916. afford generosity,

  917. if we're

  918. anxious about

  919. the life of a

  920. disciple,

  921. knowing that

  922. following Jesus

  923. is the road of

  924. dying to self,

  925. and facing

  926. rejection,

  927. what do we

  928. need to do?

  929. To look around,

  930. and ultimately

  931. to look up.

  932. It's my

  933. father's world,

  934. and I trust

  935. him, trust

  936. him to

  937. provide, I

  938. trust him

  939. with my

  940. life.

  941. That's the

  942. first thing to

  943. remember, this is

  944. your father's

  945. world, trust

  946. him to

  947. provide.

  948. The second

  949. is this,

  950. Jesus says to

  951. his followers,

  952. remember you

  953. are rich in

  954. Christ, so be

  955. generous.

  956. Jesus presents

  957. the only true

  958. solution to

  959. escaping the

  960. grip that money

  961. can have on

  962. our hearts.

  963. That stranglehold

  964. that can have

  965. our hearts, so

  966. either we tend

  967. towards greed, or

  968. we tend towards

  969. anxiety.

  970. How do we

  971. escape that

  972. trap?

  973. Jesus says,

  974. only as we

  975. come to see

  976. ourselves rich in

  977. Christ.

  978. Verse 21,

  979. this is how it

  980. will be with

  981. whoever stores up

  982. things for

  983. themselves but is

  984. not rich towards

  985. God.

  986. To be rich

  987. towards God,

  988. the end of the

  989. day, is to have

  990. Jesus Christ as

  991. Lord and

  992. Savior.

  993. Verse 31,

  994. to seek his

  995. kingdom and

  996. these things will

  997. be given to

  998. you as well.

  999. It's only when

  1000. our heart is set

  1001. on the Lord

  1002. Jesus Christ as

  1003. our true and

  1004. living hope that

  1005. we have the

  1006. freedom, the

  1007. single-minded

  1008. devotion to seek

  1009. his kingdom and

  1010. not our own.

  1011. To pray and to

  1012. work, your kingdom

  1013. come and your

  1014. will be done.

  1015. Verse 32,

  1016. do not be

  1017. afraid, little

  1018. flock, for your

  1019. father has been

  1020. pleased to give

  1021. you the kingdom.

  1022. It's only as we

  1023. know Christ as

  1024. our good shepherd

  1025. that we know

  1026. that there is no

  1027. need to fear.

  1028. He is the one

  1029. who laid down

  1030. his life for us.

  1031. He is the one

  1032. who has called

  1033. us into God's

  1034. flock, into

  1035. God's family.

  1036. He is the gate

  1037. through which we

  1038. enter into the

  1039. eternal kingdom of

  1040. God and in him

  1041. we are eternally

  1042. secure.

  1043. Verse 34, for

  1044. where your

  1045. treasure is,

  1046. there your heart

  1047. will be also.

  1048. To know Christ,

  1049. for him to have

  1050. our heart,

  1051. is to have

  1052. eternal treasure

  1053. in heaven.

  1054. That is the one

  1055. treasure that can

  1056. never be taken

  1057. from us, can never

  1058. be lost.

1059. And it is to have

  1060. a greater glory,

  1061. a greater wealth

  1062. than anything

  1063. that this world

  1064. offers.

  1065. Notice what Jesus

  1066. says in verse 33

  1067. and 34.

  1068. Or notice what he

  1069. connects.

  1070. He connects our

  1071. hearts and our

  1072. treasure.

  1073. Sell your

  1074. possessions and

  1075. give to the

  1076. poor.

  1077. Provide purses for

  1078. yourselves that

  1079. will not wear out.

  1080. A treasure in

  1081. heaven that will

  1082. never fail, where

  1083. no thief comes

  1084. near and no moth

  1085. destroys.

  1086. For where your

  1087. treasure is, there

  1088. your heart will be

  1089. also.

  1090. Our heart and our

  1091. treasure, they go

  1092. together.

  1093. So when Christ has

  1094. our heart, when we

  1095. know that we are

  1096. rich in Christ, in

  1097. him we have

  1098. everything, that's an

  1099. implication for our

  1100. money.

  1101. Jesus says, then

  1102. there'll be the

  1103. freedom to gladly be

  1104. generous, to give

  1105. wisely, to ministries,

  1106. to churches, to

  1107. people, to help

  1108. spiritually and

  1109. physically.

  1110. Then there'll be the

  1111. joy and the

  1112. excitement of using

  1113. our money to bless

  1114. others rather than

  1115. hoarding it or feeling

  1116. anxious about it.

1117. Tim Keller, in one of

  1118. his books, used the

  1119. imagery of scattering

  1120. seed.

1121. You know, to view our

  1122. money as seed.

  1123. We scatter it not

  1124. looking for a harvest

  1125. for ourselves.

1126. We scatter it so that

  1127. Christ's grace and

  1128. Christ's life and

  1129. Christ's word might

1130. grow in the lives of

  1131. others.

  1132. Because we've come to

  1133. understand that's real

  1134. riches.

  1135. Changed lives to the

  1136. glory of God, that's

  1137. wealth to pursue.

1138. And so to help us

  1139. towards that, in verse

  1140. 33, Jesus gives this,

1141. begins to give us this

  1142. comparison, to see what

  1143. has real value.

  1144. Is it treasure on

  1145. earth or is it

  1146. treasure in heaven?

1147. So that we do not

  1148. find ourselves chasing

  1149. fool's gold, but that

1150. we gladly live for the

  1151. real thing, pursuing

  1152. treasure.

  1153. Think about riches on

  1154. earth.

1155. If we have wealth, then

1156. we will likely have some

  1157. measure of status.

  1158. Some measure of

  1159. status.

1160. But when we are rich in

1161. Christ, what is true of

1162. us is that we are

  1163. children, the king of

  1164. the universe.

  1165. That's unbelievable

  1166. status right there.

1167. Riches on earth, when we

1168. have them, we know this,

  1169. we're not naive.

  1170. They can provide some

  1171. security.

1172. But when we are rich in

  1173. Christ, we have the

  1174. security.

  1175. security.

  1176. We have Romans 8

  1177. security.

1178. We have the security that

  1179. all things work together

1180. for the good of those who

  1181. love him.

  1182. Riches on earth.

  1183. We have money.

  1184. We have some surplus

  1185. wealth.

1186. That can bring us some

  1187. joy.

1188. And we're not naive, but

1189. that's one of the good

  1190. things that God gives.

1191. We have money so that we

  1192. can enjoy life.

1193. We can enjoy it with

  1194. others.

  1195. But we know there's

  1196. always the day after.

1197. We know things wear out.

1198. But when we have riches

1199. in Christ, we have joy in

  1200. this life and everlasting

  1201. joy.

1202. Perfect joy in the world

  1203. to come.

1204. Riches on earth, they can

  1205. be extremely helpful for

  1206. us.

1207. They can free us from some

  1208. debt.

  1209. Find ourselves in debt.

1210. It's good to have money

  1211. to pay it off.

1212. But when we are rich in

1213. Christ, we are set free

1214. from the only debt that

  1215. would destroy us eternally.

1216. Our moral debt before God.

1217. Of robbing him of glory.

1218. Of not giving him the

  1219. honor that he deserves.

  1220. All of that graciously

  1221. forgiven.

  1222. Cancelled by the

  1223. sacrificial work of the

1224. Lord Jesus as we heard in

  1225. Colossians 2.

1226. So Christ serves to answer

  1227. our deep anxieties by

1228. pointing us to the greater

1229. riches we have in him.

1230. He makes us truly rich.

  1231. Freeing us to serve

  1232. others.

  1233. Do we know it?

  1234. Do we live it?

  1235. Do we experience that?

1236. Being rich in Christ is the

  1237. key to a healthy

  1238. relationship to our money.

1239. Helps us to understand this

1240. life is not all there is so

1241. that we would guard against

1242. greed and just living for

  1243. today.

1244. It will help us to grow to

1245. trust our Father in heaven.

1246. To provide for our needs.

1247. Rather than living consumed by

  1248. anxiety.

1249. And as we come to see Christ and

1250. his kingdom as true riches.

1251. We'll gladly give our hearts,

  1252. our lives,

  1253. and our money

  1254. for his sake,

  1255. for his kingdom,

  1256. for his glory.

  1257. Let's pray about that

  1258. together.

  1259. Lord,

  1260. our God,

  1261. we recognize

  1262. each one of us

  1263. has our own

  1264. relationship to money

  1265. that can change

  1266. at different times.

  1267. It can tend towards

  1268. contentment at some points

1269. and greed at other points

1270. or anxiety at other times.

  1271. Lord,

1272. we pray that you would

  1273. settle our hearts

  1274. on this wonderful

  1275. reality.

  1276. That we live in

  1277. our Father's world.

1278. That we would know you

  1279. as Father through faith

  1280. in Jesus

1281. and learn to trust you.

  1282. And that

  1283. you would give us

  1284. the eyes of faith

  1285. to understand

1286. that if we have Jesus,

1287. we have all the wealth

  1288. and riches

  1289. we could ever need

  1290. or ever imagine.

  1291. And that,

  1292. Lord,

1293. that would free us up

  1294. to be radically

  1295. generous,

  1296. to give,

  1297. to support

  1298. the church

  1299. that we belong to,

  1300. to give,

  1301. to be a blessing

  1302. to our family

  1303. and our friends,

  1304. to give so that

  1305. global mission

  1306. could continue.

1307. And all for your glory

  1308. we pray.

  1309. Amen.

  1310. Now,

1311. I think the boys and girls

  1312. are just going to

  1313. come and join us.

  1314. So we'll give them

  1315. a moment.

  1316. Amen.

  1317. Amen.

  1318. Amen.

  1319. Amen.

  1320. Amen.

  1321. Amen.

  1322. I want to read

  1323. one verse

  1324. together.

  1325. So we've just been

  1326. thinking about that

  1327. reality that to know

  1328. Christ is to have

  1329. true riches.

  1330. Well,

  1331. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  1332. chapter 8

  1333. and verse 9,

  1334. we have this,

  1335. For you know

  1336. the grace

  1337. of our Lord

  1338. Jesus Christ,

  1339. that though

  1340. He was rich,

  1341. yet for your sake

  1342. He became poor,

  1343. so that you,

  1344. through His poverty,

  1345. might become rich.

  1346. And so we are

  1347. reminded of the

  1348. gospel.

  1349. The God who gives

  1350. each one of us

  1351. our life

  1352. is the God

  1353. who also gave

  1354. His Son Jesus

1355. to come into this world.

  1356. And Jesus gladly

  1357. and willingly

  1358. made this journey

  1359. from the riches

  1360. and the glory

  1361. of heaven

  1362. to come

  1363. to live

  1364. a life

  1365. of perfect

  1366. obedience

  1367. here on the earth,

  1368. to go

  1369. to the cross,

  1370. to give His life

  1371. in our place,

  1372. so that we,

  1373. through His poverty,

  1374. we might become rich.

  1375. So we've been

  1376. reminding ourselves

  1377. from God's Word

  1378. that to know

  1379. Jesus as Savior

  1380. is what it means

  1381. to be rich,

1382. to be rich towards God,

  1383. to have treasure

  1384. in heaven.

  1385. And as we come

  1386. to the Lord's table

  1387. and as we think

  1388. about the bread

  1389. and the wine,

  1390. we're being reminded

  1391. about an incredible

  1392. cost, aren't we?

  1393. The incredible cost

  1394. the Son of God

  1395. paid

  1396. that His people

  1397. might be set free

  1398. and saved.

  1399. Giving up His life

  1400. to give us

  1401. eternal life.

  1402. So as we take

  1403. the bread

  1404. and as we take

  1405. the wine,

  1406. we remember that.

  1407. This meal,

  1408. this simple meal

  1409. is for those

  1410. who know

  1411. Jesus

  1412. as Lord

  1413. and Savior,

  1414. who belong

  1415. to His church,

  1416. who can say,

  1417. by God's grace,

  1418. I am rich,

  1419. I have treasure

  1420. in heaven

  1421. because I'm trusting

  1422. in Jesus.

1423. We read in Colossians 3

  1424. and verse 4,

  1425. when Christ,

  1426. who is your life,

  1427. appears,

  1428. you also will appear

  1429. with Him

  1430. in glory.

  1431. As Jesus meets us

  1432. here

  1433. at His table,

  1434. He wants this meal

  1435. to be a reminder

  1436. of the great feast

  1437. awaiting us,

  1438. the great hope,

  1439. the great glory,

  1440. the great fellowship

  1441. that's awaiting us.

1442. So this is a meal

  1443. for the Lord's people.

  1444. So if that's you,

  1445. then please do come

  1446. and receive.

  1447. But let me say,

1448. if that's not you today,

  1449. if you're not a follower

  1450. of Jesus,

1451. if you don't yet trust Him

  1452. as your Lord

  1453. and your Savior,

  1454. then please

  1455. don't come forward

  1456. to take the bread

  1457. and the wine.

1458. But let me invite you

  1459. to think about

  1460. what we've heard

  1461. in God's Word.

  1462. Think about the treasure

  1463. that Jesus offers

  1464. through His own life,

  1465. death,

  1466. and resurrection

  1467. that in the fullness

  1468. of time

1469. you might come to Him

  1470. and you might receive.

  1471. I'm going to read

  1472. for us

  1473. from 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11:22

  1474. chapter 11

  1475. verse 22,

  1476. verse 23 rather.

  1477. For I received

  1478. from the Lord

  1479. what I also

  1480. passed on to you.

  1481. The Lord Jesus

  1482. on the night

  1483. He was betrayed

  1484. took bread

  1485. and when He had

  1486. given thanks

  1487. He broke it.

  1488. Let's pray together.

  1489. Lord,

  1490. our God,

  1491. we thank You

  1492. for Your grace

  1493. towards us

  1494. in the Lord Jesus.

  1495. We thank You

  1496. for His willingness

  1497. to leave

  1498. the glory of heaven,

  1499. to live for us,

1500. to suffer and die for us,

1501. to rise again for us,

  1502. so that by trusting

  1503. in Him,

  1504. we too would have

  1505. that hope

  1506. of eternal glory.

  1507. Lord,

  1508. we thank You

  1509. for Jesus

  1510. being willing

  1511. to lay down

  1512. His life

  1513. to make rebel sinners

  1514. into His friends,

  1515. to call us

  1516. into the family

  1517. of God.

  1518. We recognize

  1519. as we share

  1520. the Lord's Supper

1521. as the people of God

1522. that we don't do it

  1523. on the basis

  1524. of our own merit.

  1525. We recognize

  1526. that it's all

  1527. because of Jesus

  1528. and His blood

  1529. shed for us

  1530. on the cross.

  1531. Lord,

  1532. we ask

  1533. that You would

  1534. meet with us

  1535. as You promised,

  1536. that You would

  1537. strengthen our hearts

  1538. by faith

  1539. as we

  1540. take this moment

  1541. to consider,

  1542. to remember

  1543. the Lord Jesus

  1544. suffering and dying

  1545. in our place

  1546. and for our sins,

  1547. as we consider

  1548. the glorified Lord Jesus

  1549. who sends us

  1550. His presence,

  1551. who sends us

  1552. His Spirit,

  1553. who would feed us

  1554. spiritually today,

  1555. and who has prepared

  1556. an eternal home

  1557. in glory for us

  1558. so that we know

  1559. that there is still

  1560. that great feast

  1561. to come.

  1562. Lord,

  1563. we pray that You

  1564. would humble our hearts,

  1565. You'd fill our hearts,

  1566. with great joy

  1567. and gladness,

  1568. gratitude

  1569. for all that You

  1570. have done for us

  1571. in the gospel.

  1572. Amen.

  1573. Now,

  1574. we're going to sing.

  1575. We're going to sing

  1576. a section of,

  1577. or two sections actually,

  1578. of Psalm 73,

  1579. and as we're singing,

  1580. folks will steward you

  1581. to come,

  1582. if you're receiving

  1583. the Lord's Supper,

  1584. to come and take

  1585. some bread

  1586. and take some wine.

  1587. The lighter colored cups

  1588. are non-alcoholic,

  1589. the darker are alcoholic.

  1590. So,

  1591. if you take those,

  1592. take them back

  1593. to your seats

1594. and then hold on to them

1595. so that we can eat

  1596. and drink together

  1597. after we have sung.

  1598. So,

  1599. let's stand

1600. to sing Psalm 73 together.

1601. Surely the Lord is good

  1602. to Israel,

1603. to those who in their hearts

  1604. are true and pure,

  1605. but as for me,

1606. my feet had almost slipped,

  1607. my foothold had become

  1608. quite insecure.

1609. For when I saw the wicked

  1610. prospering,

  1611. I envied them

  1612. their arrogant success.

  1613. They keep their bodies

  1614. healthy, fit, and strong.

1615. They do not have to

  1616. struggle with distress.

  1617. They are not plagued

  1618. by human weaknesses.

  1619. from burdens common

  1620. to mankind

  1621. they're free.

  1622. They therefore clothe

  1623. themselves with violence.

  1624. Pride is their necklace,

  1625. fraunted shamelessly.

  1626. When in my heart

1627. I was consumed with grief,

  1628. and when my soul

  1629. was filled with bitterness,

1630. then I was like a brute beast

  1631. in your sight,

  1632. so full of ignorance

  1633. and foolishness.

1634. yet I remain with you

  1635. continually.

  1636. By my right hand,

1637. you hold me as my guide.

1638. You lead me with your counsel

  1639. to the end,

1640. and take me into glory

  1641. to abide.

  1642. In heaven,

1643. whom have I but you alone?

1644. On earth there's no one

  1645. else whom I adore.

  1646. Although my heart may

1647. fail as fresh grow weak,

  1648. God is my strength

  1649. and portion evermore.

1650. Those who are far from you

  1651. will be cut down.

1652. All those who are unfaithful

  1653. you destroy,

  1654. but I'll draw near

1655. and shelter in my God.

  1656. Your deeds, O Lord,

1657. I will recount with joy.

1658. Let me read for us from Isaiah 53.

1659. Who has believed our message?

1660. And to whom has the arm of the Lord

  1661. been revealed?

1662. He grew up before him

  1663. like a tender shoot,

1664. and like a root out of dry ground,

1665. he had no beauty or majesty

1666. to attract us to him,

  1667. nothing in his appearance

1668. that we should desire him.

1669. He was despised and rejected

  1670. by mankind,

  1671. a man of suffering

  1672. and familiar with pain.

1673. Like one from whom people

  1674. hide their faces,

  1675. he was despised,

1676. and we held him in low esteem.

1677. Surely he took up our pain

  1678. and bore our suffering.

1679. Yet we considered him punished by God,

1680. stricken by him and afflicted.

1681. But he was pierced for our transgressions,

1682. he was crushed for our iniquities.

1683. The punishment that brought us peace

  1684. was on him,

1685. and by his wounds we are healed.

1686. We all, like sheep, have gone astray.

1687. Each of us has turned to our own way,

1688. and the Lord has laid on him

1689. the iniquity of us all.

  1690. Please have a seat.

1691. I receive from the Lord

1692. what I also passed on to you.

  1693. The Lord Jesus,

1694. on the night he was betrayed,

  1695. took bread,

1696. and when he had given thanks,

1697. he broke it and said,

1698. this is my body which is for you.

1699. Do this in remembrance of me.

1700. So let's eat and remember.

1701. In the same way, after supper,

1702. he took the cup saying,

1703. this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

1704. Do this whenever you drink it

  1705. in remembrance of me.

1706. For whenever you eat this bread,

  1707. and drink this cup,

1708. you proclaim the Lord's death

  1709. until he comes.

  1710. So let's drink together.

1711. Let me lead us in prayer once again.

1712. We have now been commemorating the death of Christ.

1713. Lord, grant that by the power of that act,

1714. sin may be crucified in us,

1715. the world crucified to us,

1716. and we to the world.

  1717. And enable your children

1718. so to carry about with us continually

1719. the dying of the Lord Jesus,

1720. so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed

  1721. in our mortal bodies.

  1722. Amen.

1723. And now, as we close,

1724. let's sing our closing hymn,

1725. which is in Christ alone.

1726. And again, let's stand together to sing.
