  1. Scripture reading comes from 1 Samuel chapters 4 and 5.

    1 Samuel 4 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along on the screen, in your bulletin, or your own Bible.

  3. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines.

  4. They encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistine encamped at Aphek.

  5. The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread,

  6. Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about 4,000 men on the field of battle.

  7. And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said,

  8. Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines?

  9. Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here from Shiloh,

  10. that it may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.

  11. So the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord, a host.

  12. He was enthroned on a cherubim.

  13. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

  14. As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp,

  15. all Israel gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded.

  16. And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said,

  17. What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?

  18. And when they learned that the ark of the Lord had come to the camp,

  19. the Philistines were afraid.

  20. For they said,

  21. A God has come into the camp.

  22. And they said,

  23. Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.

  24. Woe to us.

  25. Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods?

  26. These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness.

  27. Take courage and be men, O Philistines,

  28. lest you become slaves to the Hebrews as they have been to you.

  29. Be men and fight.

  30. So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated,

  31. and they fled every man to his home.

  32. And there was a very great slaughter,

  33. and thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.

  34. And the ark of God was captured,

  35. and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

  36. A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day,

  37. with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

  38. When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road,

  39. watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God.

  40. And when the man came into the city and told the news,

  41. all the city cried out.

  42. When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said,

  43. What is this uproar?

  44. Then the man hurried and came and told Eli.

  45. Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were set so that he could not see.

  46. And the man said to Eli,

  47. I am he who has come from the battle.

  48. I fled from the battle today.

  49. And he said,

  50. How did it go, my son?

  51. He who brought the news answered and said,

  52. Israel has fled before the Philistines,

  53. and there has also been a great defeat among the people.

  54. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,

  55. and the ark of God has been captured.

  56. As soon as he mentioned the ark of God,

  57. Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate,

  58. and his neck was broken and he died.

  59. For the man was old and heavy.

  60. He had judged Israel forty years.

  61. Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant,

  62. about to give birth.

  63. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured,

  64. and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead,

  65. she bowed and gave birth.

  66. For her pains came upon her.

  67. And about the time of her death,

  68. the women attending her said to her,

  69. Do not be afraid, for ye have born a son.

  70. But she did not answer or pay attention.

  71. And she named the child Ishabod, saying,

  72. The glory has departed from Israel,

  73. because the ark of God had been captured,

  74. and because her father-in-law and her husband.

  75. And she said,

  76. The glory has departed from Israel,

  77. for the ark of God has been captured.

  78. When the Philistines captured the ark of God,

  79. they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod,

  80. then the Philistines took the ark of God,

  81. and brought it into the house of Dagon,

  82. and set it up beside Dagon.

  83. And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day,

  84. behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground

  85. before the ark of the Lord.

  86. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place.

  87. But when they rose early on the next morning,

  88. behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground

  89. before the ark of the Lord,

  90. and the head of Dagon and both his hands

  91. were lying cut off on the threshold.

  92. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him.

  93. This is why the priests of Dagon

  94. and all who enter the house of Dagon

  95. do not tread on the threshold of Dagon

  96. in Ashdod to this day.

  97. The hand of the Lord was heavy

  98. against the people of Ashdod,

  99. and he terrified and afflicted them

  100. with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory.

  101. And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were,

  102. they said,

  103. The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us,

  104. for his hand is hard against us

  105. and against Dagon, our God.

  106. This is the word of God.

  107. Great.

  108. Thank you so much, Celeste, for reading to us.

  109. I know it's a long passage that we're looking at.

  110. As we go through Samuel,

  111. some of these are going to be longer passages,

  112. but it's really important for us

  113. to actually hear God's word in full.

  114. We've actually going to,

  115. I'm going to summarize some of the last part

  116. because we haven't looked at all of it.

  117. But I hope actually,

  118. as we're back on Zoom again,

  119. that we can actually just still our hearts

  120. to really hear what God wants to say to us this morning.

  121. I don't know what kind of day you've had.

  122. I don't know what kind of morning you've had.

  123. I had a little bit of a crazy morning with my kids.

  124. But actually, Jesus is still on the throne.

  125. Whether we're gathering physically

  126. or whether we're on Zoom,

  127. Jesus is still here with us.

  128. So let me just pray for us

  129. as we get into God's word

  130. and invite him to speak to us.

  131. Father, we thank you that you

  132. are not the God that we imagine you to be.

  133. You're not the God that we try and make you to be,

  134. but you're a God who's so much better than you,

  135. than we think you are.

  136. And I pray today,

  137. even as we look at this tricky passage

  138. where there's a whole load of stuff,

  139. even about judgment.

  140. And Lord, I pray that we would see you

  141. for who you really are,

  142. that you would come and open our eyes

  143. to see that we don't come before you casually,

  144. but we come before you joyfully

  145. because you're a God who is so awesome

  146. and yet so present and so merciful and gracious.

  147. So speak to us, we pray.

  148. Amen.

  149. In Jesus' mighty name.

  150. Amen.

  151. Great.

  152. Great to see a lot of you.

  153. I can see,

  154. I saw Jesse and Victoria earlier.

  155. I saw the Yangs and Edward and Ada

  156. and a few others.

  157. Great to see you.

  158. So we're continuing in our series in Samuel.

  159. And today's going to be,

  160. there's a challenging passage in many ways.

  161. But as I start,

  162. I was reading a professor from New York University.

  163. He's an atheist

  164. and he's a very prominent philosopher

  165. called Thomas Nagel.

  166. And he said this,

  167. he said,

  168. I want atheism to be true.

  169. It isn't just that I don't believe in God.

  170. It's that I hope there is no God.

  171. I don't want there to be a God.

  172. I don't want the universe to be like that.

  173. Now, I actually appreciate his honesty

  174. because what he's saying is how we view God

  175. is often less to do with our kind of rational arguments

  176. that we live by,

  177. but more to do with the desires

  178. that we have in our hearts.

  179. An atheist like Nagel

  180. might not want God to exist

  181. so his life can carry on without interference.

  182. Or a religious person

  183. might want God to exist

  184. but to be the kind of God that they want

  185. rather than the God that he actually is.

  186. I was talking to Alan in the week

  187. and he told me in Nepalese culture,

  188. the Nepalese church is fine with a God of judgment,

  189. but they have real problems

  190. with a God of mercy and forgiveness and grace.

  191. I've spoken to some other people who said to me,

  192. yeah, I believe in a God of compassion and forgiveness,

  193. but I don't like this kind of God

  194. and this stuff about a God of judgment.

  195. You see, today's passage is difficult for many of us

  196. because it calls us to stop making God in our own image.

  197. It calls us to take God for who he really is,

  198. not for who I want him to be,

  199. you want him to be,

  200. or your culture wants him to be

  201. because actually who he really is

  202. is a place of life

  203. and a place of blessing

  204. better than we can ever conjure up for ourselves.

  205. And so this series we're looking at in 1 Samuel,

  206. we've seen how the real theme that's going through

  207. is how man looks at the outward appearance,

  208. but God looks at the heart.

  209. God raises up the humble who turn to him

  210. and he brings down the proud who trust in themselves.

  211. And we've seen that with Hannah,

  212. who was honored as she ran with desperation to God

  213. and God provided her with a son.

  214. We've seen that with Samuel, the little boy,

  215. but actually he was listening to God's word

  216. and how God honors him as the last judge of Israel

  217. and how God has promised to bring down the sons of Eli

  218. and Eli himself and his household

  219. because they were dishonoring God

  220. and treating his word with contempt.

  221. And today in chapters four through to seven,

  222. this is the kind of block we're gonna look at,

  223. we see how God plays out his promises

  224. of what he had said to the sons,

  225. how his judgment comes.

  226. So he removes the weeds from the garden of Israel

  227. so that new life and new flowers

  228. can flourish and blossom in the kingdom

  229. and the new king can come.

  230. So I'm gonna look at three things.

  231. I'm gonna look at putting God in a box

  232. and then when God breaks the box

  233. and then our response to that.

  234. So let's start off, putting God in a box.

  235. And so I encourage you to have the passage in front of you.

  236. I'm just gonna pull through a few key verses

  237. to show you what's going on.

  238. So background, Israel has been in an on and off conflict

  239. with the tribes of the Philistines

  240. and it's been going on throughout the book of the Judges

  241. and now they're back on the battlefield again.

  242. And this time they suffer a crushing defeat.

  243. And in the book of Judges, which were dark times,

  244. when they were kept defeating,

  245. even then the people would actually cry out to God

  246. and God would come and deliver them.

  247. But here we see the Israelites don't do that at all

  248. because we see the Israelites are users of God,

  249. not those who turn to God.

  250. And so here we see verse three.

  251. Their response is,

  252. why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines?

  253. That's a good reflection question.

  254. And notice they say,

  255. why has the Lord defeated us?

  256. Not the Philistines defeated us.

  257. Because you see defeat in battle

  258. in those times was seen as either a sign

  259. of the weakness of your God

  260. or a sign that your God was displeased with you.

  261. And here we see the Israelites

  262. see that their God, Yahweh,

  263. is not happy with them.

  264. But how do they respond?

  265. Do they repent?

  266. Do they go back to see what does God require of us?

  267. No, they come up with their own little fix,

  268. their own plan to deal with the situation.

  269. Verse three continues.

  270. Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord

  271. here from Shiloh,

  272. that it may come among us

  273. and save us from the power of our enemies.

  274. Well, just stop and think about it.

  275. What is the ark of the covenant?

  276. If you know your Old Testament,

  277. you know the ark was a wooden box

  278. overlaid with gold,

  279. which symbolized the footstool

  280. of the throne of God himself.

  281. It's the throne of the Lord of hosts.

  282. And that means the God of the heavenly armies,

  283. the all-powerful one.

  284. This is a sign of his rule.

  285. And it's a holy thing.

  286. Numbers four tells us

  287. that no one was to look at it.

  288. It was meant to be kept hidden

  289. behind a curtain in the tabernacle,

  290. in the holiest place,

  291. and treated with great reverence

  292. because it shows the presence of God himself.

  293. And it's the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

  294. And so inside were the Ten Commandments,

  295. the tablets of the Ten Commandments,

  296. showing that God's covenant

  297. with his word, with his people,

  298. is right at the center

  299. of a relationship with him.

  300. And then on the very top

  301. was what's called the mercy seat.

  302. And this is the place

  303. where the high priest would come in

  304. and would offer blood

  305. from the sacrifice of an animal

  306. to bring forgiveness and cleansing

  307. for the people's sin.

  308. You see, the ark was about

  309. God's holy rule,

  310. his presence.

  311. It's about his covenant

  312. through his word.

  313. And it's about the place

  314. of forgiveness and reconciliation

  315. to a sinful people.

  316. It's a highly significant thing.

  317. And so the Israelites,

  318. they figure,

  319. well, this box is from the Lord of hosts,

  320. God of the armies.

  321. So like Joshua defeated Jericho

  322. when he took the ark before him,

  323. let's bring out our secret weapon,

  324. carry out the ark,

  325. out of the tabernacle,

  326. put it on the battlefield,

  327. and ya-ra-ra,

  328. we're going to win this thing.

  329. And do you see

  330. who's actually organizing

  331. the whole thing?

  332. It's da-da-da,

  333. the sons of Eli.

  334. Remember them?

  335. Okay, they're the ones

  336. who just treated God

  337. with utter contempt.

  338. They had taken

  339. and used their position,

  340. priestly position,

  341. to get for themselves,

  342. sleeping with all the women around,

  343. because it was all about them,

  344. their whole religion.

  345. And yet,

  346. they're organizing

  347. the whole of this,

  348. and the Israelites

  349. go wild.

  350. They're excited.

  351. They're now confident

  352. they've got their box with them.

  353. Okay?

  354. God's going to come

  355. and defeat the Israelites,

  356. Philistines for them.

  357. But it's all a load of hot air,

  358. because they have literally

  359. put God in a box

  360. to use him

  361. to get them out of trouble,

  362. but they don't actually want him

  363. for who he really is.

  364. You see,

  365. isn't that actually sometimes

  366. what we often do?

  367. You know,

  368. we can have problems at work,

  369. or you've got a job interview,

  370. or you've got a health crisis,

  371. and suddenly,

  372. you haven't really been

  373. praying very much,

  374. you haven't really been

  375. engaging with God,

  376. but suddenly,

  377. your prayer life just takes off.

  378. You're kind of at church,

  379. you're really trying to do

  380. whatever it takes

  381. that you can get from God

  382. the answer that you need.

  383. And then,

  384. when he fixes your situation,

  385. what do we do?

  386. What happens to our prayer life?

  387. Suddenly,

  388. we go back to

  389. what we always were.

  390. We just kind of move on.

  391. We kind of put God

  392. back in the box.

  393. You know,

  394. we kind of wheel him out,

  395. like giving us some licey,

  396. for New Year,

  397. like an elderly relative,

  398. and then wheeling him back

  399. to his nursing home,

  400. leaving him there,

  401. ignoring him for the rest of the time

  402. until we need him again.

  403. I don't know if you've ever felt

  404. used by someone,

  405. but it's not nice.

  406. Because when we do that,

  407. we're not seeking

  408. the holy God of the universe

  409. in relationship with him.

  410. We're using him,

  411. putting him in a box,

  412. and that's actually contempt of God.

  413. And the thing this passage

  414. is going to show us

  415. is God will not be put in a box.

  416. That's the Israelites.

  417. They're religious users.

  418. But then,

  419. let's look at the pagan,

  420. the Philistines.

  421. They are pagan refusers.

  422. Because what do they do

  423. as the ark comes out?

  424. They go,

  425. a God has come into the camp.

  426. Who can deliver us

  427. from the power

  428. of these mighty gods?

  429. You see,

  430. they've actually got more reverence

  431. for this

  432. than the Israelites.

  433. They've heard of the power

  434. of this God.

  435. They've heard of the victory

  436. over the Egyptians.

  437. But they don't go,

  438. wow,

  439. let's just surrender

  440. before this awesome,

  441. powerful God.

  442. Instead,

  443. they go,

  444. take courage,

  445. be men of Philistines,

  446. lest you become slaves

  447. to the Hebrews

  448. as they have been to you.

  449. Be men and fight.

  450. You see,

  451. they've heard this God,

  452. but they,

  453. like Thomas Nagel,

  454. don't want him

  455. to be their God.

  456. They prefer their idols

  457. because they think

  458. they're going to lose

  459. their freedom

  460. if they surrender to him.

  461. They'll become slaves

  462. and restricted.

  463. And so they refuse God

  464. and they actually fight

  465. against him.

  466. Because you see,

  467. some of us may be users,

  468. some of us may be refuses.

  469. But the result of this

  470. is bad.

  471. Israel is demolished

  472. by the Philistines.

  473. 30,000 dead,

  474. Eli's son's dead,

  475. the ark of the covenant

  476. of God captured,

  477. and Eli waits trembling

  478. to hear the news.

  479. Remember,

  480. in chapter 2,

  481. verse 34,

  482. God had promised him

  483. that both of his sons

  484. would die on the same day.

  485. The news,

  486. when the news came

  487. of their death,

  488. it didn't shock him.

  489. What did shock him

  490. was the news

  491. that the ark

  492. of God's presence

  493. had gone,

  494. had been captured.

  495. And it kills him,

  496. literally.

  497. He falls over backwards

  498. and he dies.

  499. And it says,

  500. because the man

  501. was old and heavy.

  502. And actually,

  503. it's a play on words here,

  504. because the word for heavy

  505. is the word kabod,

  506. kabod in Hebrew.

  507. It's actually the same word

  508. for glory.

  509. See,

  510. the glory of God

  511. in the Old Testament

  512. is his weightiness,

  513. his substance,

  514. that when he speaks,

  515. there is power

  516. and weight

  517. behind who he is.

  518. But Eli,

  519. in honoring his sons

  520. above God,

  521. you see,

  522. he had lived

  523. for his own kabod,

  524. his own glory,

  525. and it ends up

  526. killing him.

  527. That's really sobering.

  528. And then,

  529. his daughter-in-law

  530. hears the news,

  531. and it gets even worse,

  532. because she goes into labor

  533. and she dies,

  534. proclaiming,

  535. in the name of her son,

  536. she says,

  537. her son is called

  538. Ichabod,

  539. kabod,

  540. same word,

  541. saying,

  542. the glory,

  543. kabod,

  544. has departed from Israel,

  545. for the ark of God

  546. has been captured.

  547. You see,

  548. literally,

  549. she says,

  550. the glory has gone

  551. into exile.

  552. But do you know

  553. she was wrong?

  554. God's glory

  555. and God's presence

  556. didn't depart

  557. from them

  558. when the ark left.

  559. The glory of God

  560. had long since departed

  561. because Israel

  562. had long since departed

  563. from honoring their God.

  564. And the amazing thing

  565. is this,

  566. the pagan news

  567. at the time,

  568. would have gone,

  569. Yahweh defeated,

  570. Dagon,

  571. the Philistine god,

  572. reigns supreme,

  573. because warfare shows

  574. whose God is strongest.

  575. But God doesn't work

  576. in our ways.

  577. You see,

  578. man looks at the outward

  579. appearance of defeat,

  580. but God was fulfilling

  581. his promise to Eli,

  582. he was bringing an end

  583. to the family's corrupt rule,

  584. and he was wiping

  585. the slate clean

  586. to prepare

  587. for a fresh,

  588. clean start

  589. that he wanted to bring.

  590. God's judgment

  591. clears the dead branches

  592. out so that new life

  593. can come.

  594. A scholar

  595. named Dale Ralph Davis

  596. said this,

  597. a very challenging quote,

  598. he says,

  599. Yahweh

  600. will suffer shame

  601. rather than allow you

  602. to carry on

  603. a false relationship

  604. with him.

  605. He will allow you

  606. to be disappointed

  607. with him

  608. if it will awaken you

  609. to the sort of God

  610. that he is.

  611. You know,

  612. when I was in the UK,

  613. where I studied,

  614. the university,

  615. many of the lecture halls

  616. and the drama studio

  617. and even flats

  618. were actually

  619. old church buildings

  620. which had closed

  621. and they'd been taken over.

  622. And many people

  623. I heard lamented,

  624. oh,

  625. the glory departed

  626. when the building shut.

  627. No,

  628. the glory doesn't depart

  629. then.

  630. It departed long before

  631. when people

  632. had treated God

  633. as a user

  634. and weren't lovers

  635. of him.

  636. You see,

  637. God may,

  638. and this is challenging,

  639. but this is what

  640. the passage is saying,

  641. God may allow

  642. your plans,

  643. he may allow

  644. your prayers,

  645. he may even allow

  646. his church

  647. to be defeated

  648. to wake us up

  649. to who he really is.

  650. And you know,

  651. I've talked to people

  652. who say things like,

  653. I used to pray

  654. before job interviews

  655. and every time I prayed,

  656. God gave me the job,

  657. but I prayed this time

  658. and I didn't get the job.

  659. Like,

  660. what went wrong?

  661. Like,

  662. what's the point

  663. in praying?

  664. But maybe

  665. we've made God

  666. our genie,

  667. we've put him in a box,

  668. he is so gracious

  669. to us,

  670. but sometimes

  671. he'll disappoint us

  672. so that we come

  673. to him for him,

  674. we come to him

  675. for his face,

  676. not just for his hand

  677. of what he's going

  678. to give us.

  679. So that we learn

  680. how to honour him

  681. as the holy God,

  682. the sovereign God,

  683. the gracious God,

  684. but who God really is

  685. not to use him.

  686. That's the first thing.

  687. When we put God

  688. in a box.

  689. But the second thing

  690. is this.

  691. When God

  692. breaks the box.

  693. And

  694. I love this,

  695. this is kind of,

  696. I'd love to see this

  697. acted out,

  698. but maybe Annabelle

  699. and Justin

  700. can do this for us later.

  701. But just when

  702. Yahweh

  703. seems down

  704. and out

  705. for the count,

  706. God proves

  707. that he's still

  708. on the throne.

  709. Do you remember

  710. in chapter 2,

  711. Hannah's prayer

  712. says,

  713. the adversaries

  714. of the Lord

  715. will be broken

  716. in pieces.

  717. And so what happens?

  718. Verse 5,

  719. sorry,

  720. chapter 5,

  721. verse 1 and 2.

  722. When the Philistines

  723. captured the Ark of God,

  724. they brought it

  725. from Ebenezer

  726. to Ashdod.

  727. And then the Philistines

  728. took the Ark of God

  729. and they brought it

  730. into the house

  731. of Dagon

  732. and set it up

  733. beside Dagon.

  734. See,

  735. remember,

  736. I said warfare

  737. was a battle of gods.

  738. And so when pagans

  739. won a victory,

  740. pagan nations

  741. won a victory

  742. over another nation,

  743. what would they do?

  744. They would bring

  745. the image

  746. of that nation's god

  747. and like a hunter's

  748. trophy cabinet,

  749. they'd put it

  750. in their temple

  751. to show,

  752. look at all the people

  753. we've defeated.

  754. It was,

  755. because you know,

  756. refusers,

  757. when they seem successful,

  758. they love to mock

  759. and to look down

  760. on those who seem

  761. defeated and weak.

  762. But here's what I love.

  763. I love this part.

  764. And when,

  765. this is verse 3,

  766. when the people

  767. of Ashdod

  768. rose early next day,

  769. okay,

  770. they're probably

  771. like kind of,

  772. a bit kind of cocky

  773. after the victory

  774. of the day before,

  775. they walk into

  776. their temple

  777. and it says this,

  778. behold,

  779. Dagon had fallen

  780. face down

  781. on the ground

  782. before the Ark

  783. of the Lord.

  784. You see,

  785. what's happening

  786. is Dagon

  787. is literally

  788. prostrate

  789. on the floor

  790. before the Ark

  791. of Yahweh.

  792. That's actually

  793. how people

  794. used to work,

  795. worship.

  796. If you see

  797. how Muslims pray,

  798. that's how people

  799. would do it.

  800. Dagon is worshipping

  801. Yahweh.

  802. It's kind of comical.

  803. It's tragic.

  804. And so,

  805. what do the people do?

  806. They go,

  807. oh,

  808. do they repent?

  809. No.

  810. They prop their idol

  811. back up into their place.

  812. And so,

  813. what does it say?

  814. They took Dagon,

  815. put him back in his place,

  816. and the next morning,

  817. okay,

  818. what happens?

  819. Behold,

  820. Dagon had fallen

  821. face down on the ground

  822. before the Ark

  823. of the Lord.

  824. And now,

  825. the head of Dagon

  826. and both his hands

  827. were lying cut off

  828. on the threshold.

  829. Only the trunk

  830. of Dagon

  831. was left to him.

  832. Do you get the message?

  833. Okay?

  834. Your idols suck.

  835. That's what he's saying.

  836. Okay?

  837. What you think

  838. is the source

  839. of your success

  840. actually is just

  841. a museum piece.

  842. because anything

  843. you trust in,

  844. anything you give glory

  845. to for your success

  846. or for anything

  847. in your life

  848. other than God himself

  849. will ultimately

  850. at some point

  851. be exposed

  852. and brought low

  853. and been shown

  854. for a dead,

  855. worthless idol

  856. for what it really is.

  857. You see,

  858. you haven't kind of

  859. COVID

  860. and even you think back

  861. to like the financial crisis

  862. in 2008

  863. and a thousand

  864. other things

  865. shown us things like

  866. we're not in control.

  867. Our plans

  868. are not God.

  869. Yet how many of us

  870. kind of,

  871. we continue to prop

  872. that idol

  873. back up in its place,

  874. you know,

  875. trust our own plans,

  876. our own abilities,

  877. our own success

  878. for what can make us through.

  879. And you know,

  880. God is sometimes

  881. so gracious to us

  882. to actually smash our plans,

  883. to actually smash

  884. the things we trust

  885. into pieces

  886. to wake us up

  887. to see that

  888. his holiness

  889. is the source

  890. of life

  891. that you are craving

  892. for and longing for.

  893. He is the source

  894. of everything

  895. that you ultimately desire.

  896. He is our oxygen.

  897. He is our life.

  898. And he keeps going,

  899. come to me.

  900. I want to give you life.

  901. Let me show you

  902. that,

  903. you know,

  904. that your kind of,

  905. your self-made snorkels

  906. don't work in deep water.

  907. Let me show you,

  908. come to me.

  909. But if you,

  910. like the Philistines

  911. and like a diver

  912. who continually refuses,

  913. no,

  914. I don't want your oxygen.

  915. I don't want your oxygen.

  916. I can do it by myself.

  917. I'm going to cut the line.

  918. Trust yourself.

  919. At some point,

  920. God will not force

  921. his life upon us.

  922. And we will die

  923. cut off

  924. eternally from God

  925. if we continually,

  926. continually refuse him.

  927. And you can't go,

  928. well,

  929. God's just mean,

  930. isn't he?

  931. No,

  932. if you choose

  933. to go,

  934. hey,

  935. I want my life,

  936. my way,

  937. not his way,

  938. he will eventually

  939. hand us over

  940. to the consequences

  941. of our choices.

  942. And even if you're

  943. a believer,

  944. you're not going to,

  945. there's not a place

  946. of eternal death,

  947. but actually he can

  948. wake us up

  949. through bringing

  950. consequences

  951. of our decisions

  952. to us.

  953. you know,

  954. Paul in the Romans

  955. says the wages

  956. of sin is death.

  957. God says,

  958. don't walk away

  959. from me.

  960. And what happens

  961. is God brings

  962. a deadly plague

  963. on the Philistines.

  964. It's quite heavy

  965. in many ways.

  966. And that's where

  967. we got up to

  968. in the reading.

  969. Because actually

  970. scripture is really clear.

  971. All of us

  972. at some point

  973. are users

  974. or refusers of God.

  975. at some point.

  976. All of us

  977. have sinned

  978. and fallen short

  979. of the kavod,

  980. the glory of God.

  981. We all of us

  982. have not treated

  983. God as God

  984. in some way.

  985. And all of us

  986. experience our sin

  987. and at some point

  988. experience the consequences

  989. when we get exposed

  990. and God exposes us

  991. in different ways.

  992. And God is gracious

  993. to bring our idols

  994. to fail.

  995. But when you feel

  996. the consequences

  997. of your sin,

  998. do you know

  999. what uses

  1000. and refusers do?

  1001. They either

  1002. become self-atoners

  1003. or they become

  1004. minimizers

  1005. and deniers

  1006. of their sin.

  1007. And here's where

  1008. chapter 6

  1009. comes into play.

  1010. We didn't read this

  1011. but here's where

  1012. chapter 6

  1013. kind of

  1014. picks up the story

1015. and I'm going to go

  1016. quickly and summarize this.

  1017. But what happens is

  1018. the Philistines

  1019. seek to self-atone

  1020. and remove

  1021. the consequences

  1022. by appeasing God.

  1023. So they produce

  1024. a guilt offering

  1025. for God.

  1026. And that's good.

  1027. Scripture tells you

  1028. that sin requires

  1029. a guilt offering

  1030. for healing.

  1031. But what offering

  1032. do they bring?

  1033. Do they bring

  1034. a sacrifice

  1035. of an animal

  1036. blood to God's altar

  1037. as he required?

  1038. No.

  1039. They actually say

  1040. this and this is

  1041. verse 5.

  1042. They say

  1043. you must make

  1044. images

  1045. the word is

  1046. idols

  1047. of your tumors

  1048. and images

  1049. idols of your mice

  1050. that's actually rats

  1051. that ravage the land

  1052. and give glory

1053. to the God of Israel

  1054. perhaps he will

  1055. lighten his hands

  1056. off you

  1057. and your gods

  1058. and your land.

  1059. Do you see

  1060. what they're doing?

  1061. They feel the consequence

1062. of their sin on them.

  1063. Okay.

  1064. And so they're

  1065. appeasing God

  1066. by making

  1067. golden idols

  1068. of boils

  1069. and rats.

  1070. That's just gross.

  1071. In fact

  1072. in scripture

  1073. it's unclean

  1074. all of it.

  1075. And they're putting them

  1076. they put them

  1077. on a car

  1078. next to the

  1079. holy ark

  1080. of God

  1081. and they think

  1082. that these

  1083. disgusting images

  1084. in some way

  1085. are going to

  1086. please this God.

  1087. And they send it

  1088. back with the ark

  1089. and kind of hope

  1090. that they've just

  1091. kind of removed

  1092. the consequences

  1093. they can get on

  1094. with their lives

  1095. and their gods

1096. and all the other stuff.

  1097. Because you see

  1098. this is them

  1099. self-atoning

  1100. making up

  1101. trying to remove

  1102. the consequences

  1103. of their sin

  1104. while still trying

  1105. to stay in control

  1106. without coming

  1107. to God

  1108. on his terms.

  1109. You know

  1110. I've got friends

  1111. who self-harm

  1112. and you know

  1113. self-harm

  1114. is a way

  1115. to try and remove

  1116. feelings of guilt

  1117. and shame

  1118. through shedding

  1119. our own blood.

  1120. It's a form

  1121. of self-atonement

  1122. and it's devastating.

  1123. It feels good

  1124. for a moment

  1125. but it leaves scars.

  1126. But it's

1127. I think we can do that

  1128. also psychologically too.

  1129. You know

  1130. I talked to

  1131. a lady

  1132. who said

  1133. I know

  1134. God forgives me

  1135. but I can't

  1136. forgive myself

  1137. for what I've done.

  1138. You know

  1139. what she's saying

  1140. is

  1141. sure I understand

  1142. the idea

  1143. that God forgives

  1144. but that's not enough

  1145. so I've got to

  1146. self-atone

  1147. by being really

  1148. hard on myself.

  1149. Thinking that

  1150. maybe the worse

  1151. or the more guilty

  1152. I feel

  1153. the more likely

1154. God is to forgive you

  1155. or to get you

  1156. out of it.

  1157. That's actually

  1158. psychological self-harm.

  1159. Some of us

  1160. self-atone

  1161. by serving

  1162. or doing charity.

  1163. Others

  1164. through confessing

  1165. your sin

  1166. in CG

  1167. removing the guilty feeling

1168. you just had a nice

  1169. therapy session

  1170. in your CG

  1171. and then

  1172. you go away

1173. and you just carry on

1174. with the rest of your life

1175. and then you come back

  1176. again next week

  1177. just confess the same

  1178. thing

1179. but you have no sense

  1180. of actually trying

  1181. to really change

1182. or to make any difference

  1183. in your life.

  1184. It's actually a form

  1185. of self-atonement.

  1186. Remove the consequences

  1187. of sin

  1188. without running to God

  1189. to truly cleanse you

  1190. from your sin

1191. and to truly change you

1192. so that you want him

  1193. for him.

  1194. Now that's

  1195. what the Philistines do

  1196. self-atonement.

  1197. The Israelites

  1198. they do something else.

  1199. When the ark returns

  1200. they are ones

  1201. who minimize

  1202. or fail to own

  1203. their sin.

  1204. The ark gets back

  1205. and the Israelites

  1206. don't kind of repent

  1207. sorry God

  1208. we've just been

  1209. users of you.

  1210. No they go

  1211. oh everything's fine

  1212. the ark's back

  1213. let's have a party.

  1214. They sacrifice the cows

  1215. when only bulls

1216. were meant to be sacrificed.

  1217. They put the ark

  1218. on a huge stone

1219. for everyone to look at

  1220. when actually it was

  1221. meant to be hidden

  1222. and treated respect

  1223. behind the curtain

  1224. of the tabernacle.

1225. God is still in their box.

  1226. They're still users

  1227. after all that has

  1228. happened to them

  1229. and the judgment

1230. of God comes upon them

1231. and death comes upon them

  1232. and they go

1233. oh this is a problem.

  1234. Who is able

1235. to stand before the Lord

  1236. this holy God?

  1237. Okay that's a great question.

  1238. Psalm 24 says

  1239. yeah only those

  1240. who've got a pure heart

  1241. and clean hands.

1242. And so they don't go

  1243. let's repent.

  1244. They go

1245. oh to whom shall he

1246. go up away from us?

1247. Let's get rid of him.

  1248. We don't want him.

  1249. Okay.

  1250. We don't want him

  1251. because he doesn't

  1252. fit in our box.

  1253. You see

  1254. when self-atoners

  1255. and minimizers

  1256. still have God

  1257. in their box

  1258. they do so

  1259. because they don't realize

1260. that when you come to God

  1261. on his terms

  1262. when you let him

  1263. break your box

  1264. you can quit

  1265. being hard on yourself.

  1266. You can quit

  1267. all your self-atonement.

  1268. You can quit

  1269. denying or minimizing

  1270. your sin

  1271. because he has made

  1272. a way

  1273. to face it fully

  1274. and to remove

  1275. all of your sin

  1276. and consequences.

  1277. Because the crazy thing

  1278. in the story is

  1279. the whole way along

  1280. the top of this

  1281. holy ark

  1282. of the covenant

  1283. which has been

  1284. with the Israelites

  1285. which has been

  1286. with the Philistines

  1287. all along

  1288. was the mercy seat

  1289. where

  1290. through the blood

  1291. of an animal sacrifice

  1292. the people

  1293. would be cleansed

  1294. forgiven

  1295. healed

  1296. and could experience

  1297. God's blessing

  1298. into their life again.

  1299. And we know

  1300. as Christians

  1301. if you kind of

  1302. fast track the story

  1303. those of us

  1304. who've been

  1305. in Watermark a while

  1306. we know

  1307. that actually

  1308. we have a

  1309. new covenant

  1310. that's the ark

  1311. of the old covenant

  1312. that we have

  1313. a new covenant

  1314. in Jesus' blood

  1315. which as we celebrate

  1316. communion later

  1317. we're celebrating

  1318. this new covenant

  1319. which is sealed

  1320. with Christ

  1321. came to die

  1322. to atone

  1323. for every ounce

  1324. of God's judgment

  1325. on us

  1326. every ounce

  1327. of all need

  1328. for self-atoning

  1329. removed

  1330. because Jesus

  1331. paid it all.

  1332. He drained

  1333. every morsel

  1334. and every drop

  1335. of it.

  1336. There's nothing

  1337. but grace left

  1338. it's a throne

  1339. of grace

  1340. Hebrew says

  1341. for those

  1342. who come to it

  1343. and who come

  1344. to him.

  1345. God's mercy

  1346. triumphs over judgment

  1347. for those

  1348. who come to God

  1349. in his way

  1350. not in our way.

  1351. His forgiveness

  1352. is total.

  1353. No believer

  1354. needs to live

  1355. in a cringing fear

  1356. that God

  1357. is somehow

  1358. going to condemn you

  1359. God is somehow

  1360. going to be

  1361. disappointed in you

  1362. God is somehow

  1363. going to turn

  1364. his back on you

  1365. you haven't done

  1366. enough for him

  1367. because

  1368. if you run

  1369. to the one

  1370. who wants to

  1371. give you oxygen

  1372. and life

  1373. he's not

  1374. withholding

  1375. it from you

  1376. he's been wanting

  1377. to give it

  1378. to you all along.

  1379. Nothing delights

  1380. him more

  1381. than when sinners

  1382. come and repent

  1383. before him.

  1384. He delights

  1385. to call us

  1386. his beloved

  1387. sons and daughters

  1388. and the only

  1389. condition

  1390. to receive mercy

  1391. is to quit

  1392. using

  1393. and quit

  1394. refusing

  1395. God

  1396. and return

  1397. to God

  1398. on his terms

  1399. with empty

  1400. hands

  1401. in repentance.

  1402. 20 years later

  1403. chapter 7

  1404. Samuel

  1405. finally appears

  1406. he hasn't been

  1407. anywhere in these

  1408. last two chapters

  1409. he finally appears

  1410. and he calls

  1411. the people

  1412. back to relationship

  1413. to himself.

  1414. 7 verse 3

  1415. says this

  1416. he says

  1417. if you are

  1418. returning to the

  1419. Lord with all

  1420. your heart

  1421. put away the

  1422. foreign gods

  1423. the Ashteroth

  1424. that's an idol

  1425. from among you

  1426. and direct your

  1427. heart to the

  1428. Lord

1429. not just to use him

1430. not just to refuse him

  1431. but to actually

  1432. want him

  1433. and do you know

  1434. what they did?

  1435. I mean

  1436. this is like

  1437. one of the highlights

1438. of the book of Samuel

  1439. it's like the one

  1440. of the few times

  1441. to actually do

  1442. something right

  1443. so the people

  1444. of Israel

  1445. they put away

  1446. the Baals

  1447. and the Ashteroth

  1448. and they served

  1449. the Lord

  1450. only

  1451. you see

  1452. what happens

  1453. revival

  1454. begins to break

  1455. out in the people

  1456. of Israel

  1457. and God

  1458. brings them

  1459. the very

  1460. victory

  1461. over the Philistines

  1462. that they had

  1463. wanted all along

  1464. because finally

  1465. they've woken up

  1466. to see that when

  1467. you love God

  1468. for God

  1469. when you honestly

  1470. turn to him

  1471. he can deal

  1472. with everything

  1473. else in our lives

  1474. when you come

  1475. in his way

  1476. there is life

  1477. there is life

  1478. there is life

  1479. what does this

  1480. mean for us?

  1481. here's the final thing

  1482. we're going to take

  1483. communion

  1484. actually in a second

  1485. and that's that

  1486. symbol I said

  1487. of the presence

  1488. of a holy God

  1489. with us

  1490. bringing us

  1491. this incredible

  1492. forgiveness

  1493. through Jesus

  1494. death

  1495. as the only way

  1496. that you can

  1497. come to God

  1498. do you know

  1499. some of us

  1500. don't truly

  1501. enjoy communion

  1502. and everything

  1503. it represents

  1504. we don't truly

  1505. enjoy

  1506. and get excited

  1507. at the grace

  1508. of God

  1509. because you read

  1510. passages about

  1511. judgment like this

  1512. in the Bible

  1513. and because of

  1514. upbringing you've had

  1515. or experiences

  1516. you've had

  1517. we know

  1518. theoretically

  1519. that God

  1520. loves us

  1521. and that Jesus

  1522. forgives us

  1523. we kind of know

  1524. that because you've

1525. been in church a while

1526. but we still put God

1527. in this box of harsh

  1528. or hard

  1529. or demanding

  1530. or disappointed

  1531. but you know

  1532. God so loved

  1533. the world

  1534. that he sent Jesus

  1535. to die for you

  1536. not to forgive you

  1537. theoretically

  1538. but to smash

  1539. that box

  1540. it's actually a false idol

  1541. it's a false image

  1542. it's an idol

  1543. the box

  1544. that God

  1545. is harsh

  1546. towards you

  1547. that's maybe

  1548. your parents

  1549. that's maybe

  1550. your culture

  1551. but it's not God

  1552. he wants you

  1553. to come to him

  1554. as you come

  1555. to communion

  1556. firstly to repent

  1557. of all the ways

  1558. that we try

  1559. and self-atone

  1560. be totally honest

  1561. and real before him

  1562. about sin

  1563. don't have any hiding

1564. and when you do that

  1565. you can find

  1566. the most joy

  1567. filled freedom

  1568. that there is

  1569. full forgiveness

  1570. for you

  1571. every time

  1572. you confess sin

  1573. let me tell you

  1574. never just confess sin

  1575. and confess sin

  1576. always finish

  1577. thanking God

1578. that it is dealt with

1579. and don't take it up

  1580. and don't

  1581. you know that phrase

  1582. in that song

  1583. it says

  1584. when Satan tempts me

  1585. to despair

  1586. and tells me

  1587. of the guilt within

  1588. upward I look

  1589. and see him there

  1590. who made an end

  1591. of all my sin

  1592. if Satan comes

  1593. to make you despair

1594. you tell him where to go

  1595. because Jesus

1596. has already dealt with it

1597. some of you need to hear that

  1598. some of us

1599. need to hear a different message

  1600. some of us

  1601. we get God's forgiveness

  1602. but here's the challenge

  1603. of the passage

1604. we actually take it lightly

  1605. it doesn't thrill us

  1606. we come casually

  1607. to communion

  1608. we come casually

  1609. confessing

  1610. we respond to sermons

  1611. casually

  1612. because we don't want

  1613. to face the cost

  1614. of change

  1615. we don't really want

  1616. God to be God

  1617. in every area

  1618. of our lives

  1619. John the Baptist

  1620. says bear fruit

  1621. in keeping

  1622. with repentance

  1623. let's not carry on

  1624. as users

  1625. or refusers

  1626. of God

  1627. Paul actually says

  1628. and here's actually

  1629. we often don't read

  1630. this part

  1631. but Paul says

  1632. in 1 Corinthians 11

  1633. some people have died

  1634. after taking communion

  1635. because they took it

  1636. so lightly

  1637. because they didn't

  1638. think about the sin

1639. of the way they were

  1640. treating their other

  1641. relationships

1642. and the way they were

  1643. treating God

  1644. God says

  1645. take my discipline

  1646. seriously

  1647. it's gracious

  1648. it's gracious

1649. but I want to break

  1650. the box where you

1651. treat me as your mate

  1652. I'm not a tame lion

  1653. as C.S. Lewis says

1654. in the Chronicles of Narnia

  1655. but I am good

  1656. really good

1657. so take me for who I am

  1658. on my terms

  1659. come and repent

  1660. and that is where

1661. you're going to find life

  1662. I want you to

  1663. just take a minute

  1664. and just think

  1665. for yourself

  1666. where are you

  1667. with God

  1668. who do you

  1669. resonate more

  1670. within this story

  1671. what's the box

  1672. that you've placed

  1673. God in

  1674. are you a user

  1675. are you a refuser

  1676. if you haven't

  1677. got the communion

  1678. elements

  1679. I encourage you

  1680. to have them now

  1681. because we're going

1682. to take it in a second

  1683. but before we do

  1684. we don't come lightly

1685. this is a holy moment

1686. this is an awesome moment

1687. this is a joyful moment

  1688. for those who come

1689. to God on his terms

  1690. so let's just

  1691. really take a moment

  1692. to actually examine

  1693. where we are

  1694. with God

1695. how are you viewing him

  1696. what does your life

  1697. show you

  1698. about where you are

  1699. with him

  1700. he longs for you

  1701. to run back

1702. if you need to repent

  1703. just take this time

  1704. to actually come

  1705. before him and repent

  1706. if you're not a believer

1707. you need to take seriously

  1708. who is this God

  1709. don't make him

  1710. in your own image

1711. you've got to take him

  1712. as he is

  1713. will you be like

  1714. the Philistines

1715. or will you be like

  1716. the Israelites

  1717. at the end

  1718. who really do turn

  1719. and recognise

1720. that he is the only one

  1721. some of you

  1722. actually need to

  1723. allow him

  1724. to just show you

  1725. his grace

  1726. maybe you just need

  1727. to actually

  1728. open up your hands

  1729. and release to him

  1730. some of

  1731. those boxes

1732. that you've placed him in

  1733. and ask him

  1734. to change them

  1735. and break

1736. break out of those boxes
