  1. Now while the boys and girls are heading for their class,

  2. and perhaps you can turn in your Bibles,

  3. we're going to hear in just a moment from 1 Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  4. And maybe as a reminder, so Bob's going to come and read for us,

  5. and then lead us in prayer.

  6. And just a reminder to students and young workers,

  7. there's a lunch fairly shortly after the service,

  8. and then Bob's going to share with us about the person and work of the Lord Jesus.

  9. So please do stick around if you've signed up.

  10. If you've not signed up, please do come along anyway.

  11. And Bob will come and share with us.

  12. Thanks, Bob.

  13. Our first reading is from 1 Peter chapter 4, verses 7 to 11,

    1 Peter 4:7–11

  14. and then we'll read from 2 Peter chapter 3.

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  15. These are two of many passages in the New Testament that remind us that we live in the present,

  16. in the light of future events that are sure to take place.

  17. 1 Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  18. The end of all things is near.

  19. Therefore, be alert and of sober mind, so that you may pray.

  20. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

  21. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

  22. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,

  23. as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.

  24. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.

  25. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides.

  26. So that in all things, God may be praised through Jesus Christ.

  27. To him be glory, be the glory and the power forever and ever.

  28. Amen.

  29. And our second reading near the end of 2 Peter, 2 Peter chapter 3, at verse 8.

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  30. Do not forget this one thing, dear friends.

  31. With the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

  32. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.

  33. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

  34. But the day of the Lord will come, like a thief.

  35. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire,

  36. and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

  37. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?

  38. You ought to live holy and godly lives.

  39. As you look forward to the day of God and speed is coming.

  40. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire,

  41. and the elements will melt in the heat.

  42. But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells.

  43. Let's pray.

  44. Our Father in heaven, we thank you for these vivid and encouraging pictures of what lies ahead.

  45. Lord, so often we look at this world, we look at our lives, we look at the city in which we live,

  46. and we see so much that is dislocated and disjointed.

  47. And we are promised that a day is coming when all that is wrong will be put right,

  48. when all that is evil will be judged and condemned,

  49. and that there will be indeed a new heavens and a new earth.

  50. We pray that in the light of what the Lord Jesus will one day bring to completion,

  51. that today we might live lives that are characterized by holiness and by love and by joy and by service.

  52. We pray, too, that we would recognize that the Lord is not slow,

  53. but rather he desires that people would come to a living and permanent relationship with him.

  54. Lord, we pray that today, if anybody here may be not yet in a relationship with Jesus by faith,

  55. that they might recognize that today is an opportunity,

  56. an opportunity to repent and to believe,

  57. and to recognize the one who has come and the one who will come again.

  58. We thank you for those, as we were reminded, the many who serve within this congregation,

  59. and we pray that as we serve, we should do so,

  60. as those who serve with joy and serve with thanksgiving and serve with a glad heart.

  61. We pray for this city in which we are met.

  62. We pray for this community in which we are located.

  63. And we recognize the beauty of the city, its history, and its heritage.

  64. A growing number of people want to call Edinburgh their home,

  65. a place to study, a place to live, a place to work.

  66. And we pray that we, as your people, and as members of your church,

  67. that we would consider ways of reaching this growing population

  68. from all different parts of the world, from all different parts of the United Kingdom.

  69. We pray that there might be a church in every community,

  70. a place where people are welcomed,

  71. and a place where people may be introduced or taught in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  72. So, Lord, you know each of our own individual lives.

  73. You know our story.

  74. You know the past.

  75. You know today.

  76. And you and you alone know the future.

  77. In a room with a gathering of this size,

  78. there are many issues and cares and concerns.

  79. Most are unknown to us,

  80. but all are known to you.

  81. You know the very heart of each one of us.

  82. You know the joys and the sorrows.

  83. You know the anxieties and the fears.

  84. And we thank you that we can come to you in the name of Jesus,

  85. to that throne of grace where we can receive help,

  86. where we can receive mercy,

  87. where we can receive grace,

  88. because this is our time of need.

  89. Hear us, O Lord, we pray,

  90. not because of who we are,

  91. but hear us because we come to you in the name of Jesus.

  92. And we ask that you would hear us because of who he is.

  93. And we pray in Jesus' name.

  94. Amen.

  95. Now, before we turn back to Luke's gospel,

  96. we're going to sing again another section of a psalm,

  97. this time a section of Psalm 113.

  98. We're going to sing the first six verses.

  99. And again, we can stand as we sing together.

  100. Amen.

  101. O praise you, servants of the Lord,

  102. sing praises to his holy name.

  103. O blessed be the name of God,

  104. His praise forevermore proclaim.

  105. From east to west the praise of God.

  106. Each day is to be spread abroad.

  107. The Lord is high above the earth,

  108. His glory far above the sky.

  109. Who else is like the Lord our God,

  110. the one who sits enthroned on high.

  111. He is the one who stoops down low

  112. to look on heaven on earth below.

  113. Now, again, if you have your Bibles,

  114. if you're using a church Bible,

  115. it's on page 1045.

  116. It will be in Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12:35–48

  117. verses 35 to 48.

  118. We're continuing to follow the journey of Jesus

  119. towards Jerusalem.

  120. And the emphasis this morning

  121. is to be ready for Christ's return.

  122. Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  123. beginning at verse 35.

  124. Be dressed, ready for service,

  125. and keep your lamps burning.

  126. Like servants waiting for their master

  127. to return from a wedding banquet.

  128. So when he comes and knocks,

  129. they can immediately open the door for him.

  130. It will be good for those servants

  131. whose master finds them watching when he comes.

  132. Truly I tell you,

  133. he will dress himself to serve,

  134. will make them recline at the table,

  135. and will come and wait on them.

  136. It will be good for those servants

  137. whose master finds them ready,

  138. even if he comes in the middle of the night

  139. or towards daybreak.

  140. But understand this,

  141. if the owner of the house had known

  142. or whatever the thief was coming,

  143. he would not have let his house be broken into.

  144. You also must be ready

  145. because the son of man will come

  146. at an hour when you do not expect him.

  147. Peter asked,

  148. Lord, are you telling this parable to us

  149. or to everyone?

  150. The Lord answered,

  151. who then is the faithful and wise manager

  152. whom the master puts in charge of his servants

  153. to give them their food allowance

  154. at the proper time?

  155. It will be good for that servant

  156. whom the master finds doing so when he returns.

  157. Truly I tell you,

  158. he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

  159. But suppose the servant says to himself,

  160. my master is taking a long time in coming,

  161. and then he begins to beat the other servants,

  162. both men and women,

  163. and to eat and drink and get drunk.

  164. The master of that servant will come on a day

  165. when he does not expect him,

  166. and at an hour he is not aware of.

  167. He will cut him to pieces

  168. and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

  169. The servant who knows the master's will

  170. and does not get ready

  171. or does not do what the master wants

  172. will be beaten with many blows.

  173. But the one who does not know

  174. and does things deserving punishment

  175. will be beaten with few blows.

  176. From everyone who has been given much,

  177. much will be demanded.

  178. And from the one who has been entrusted with much,

  179. much more will be asked.

  180. Amen.

  181. This is God's word.

  182. Let me begin by asking a question.

  183. What connects the following three jobs?

  184. The soldier on a tour of duty,

  185. the fireman or the firewoman,

  186. and a first century household servant.

  187. One sentence is one answer in two ways.

  188. It's the need to be ready.

  189. Each of those figures could be called into service

  190. at any moment.

  191. And they need to be ready

  192. because they could face an inspection

  193. from the commander or master.

  194. Jesus, represented in our stories as the master,

  195. has been preparing his disciples,

  196. his servants,

  197. for the truth that he is going away.

  198. He is on this journey to Jerusalem.

  199. He will go to the cross to die.

  200. Three days later, he will rise again from the dead,

  201. and then he will return to the glory of heaven.

  202. He has been preparing them for that,

  203. but now he prepares them for something else.

  204. He prepares them for his certain future return.

  205. The Old Testament spoke of it as the day of the Lord.

  206. We hear it also in the New Testament.

  207. Perhaps we are familiar with the idea

  208. of the second coming of the Lord Jesus.

  209. This is what Jesus is preparing his disciples for,

  210. saying, be ready.

  211. Be ready because Jesus is coming back.

  212. Be ready because Jesus will bring history to an end.

  213. Be ready because Jesus will judge the living and the dead.

  214. Be ready because Jesus will either reward or punish.

  215. So when we hear this repeated note to be ready in our text,

  216. we need to hear the urgency from Jesus

  217. so that we would let that certain future day

  218. shape how we live in this day.

  219. That it would shape our faith and obedience.

  220. It would shape our mission to make Jesus known,

  221. and it would influence us to trust in Jesus

  222. if we're not already his followers

  223. because he calls us to be ready.

  224. We'll think about it in three different ways.

  225. Here's the first, be ready because Jesus rewards

  226. faithful servants.

  227. I don't know how many of you have watched Downton Abbey.

  228. I imagine many of us are at least familiar with it.

  229. Downton was centered on the house of the Earl of Grantham.

  230. And living with the Earl and Lady Grantham

  231. and some of their children were this team of servants.

  232. There was Bates, he was the chief valet,

  233. and there was others underneath.

  234. And those servants had to be geared up and ready

  235. to serve the Earl and Lady Grantham

  236. and their family day or night.

  237. Downton's quite helpful for reminding us

  238. about the way things were in the first century.

  239. So the parable in verses 35 to 38

  240. is something that would have been familiar

  241. to the people of Jesus' day.

  242. So the master has gone away.

  243. He went away to a wedding banquet.

  244. The servants are at home.

  245. And there is that responsibility for them

  246. to be watchful, to be ready,

  247. because sometime in the future,

  248. the master would return.

  249. They needed to be ready to open the door,

  250. to be ready to have the house all set

  251. for his arrival.

  252. So verse 35 and verse 36 are very familiar.

  253. But then you come to verse 37 in our text,

  254. and there is a huge surprise.

  255. We've said this before.

  256. Whenever we're reading a parable that Jesus tells,

  257. always look for the surprising

  258. and the unexpected piece of the story,

  259. because that often leads us

  260. to what Jesus is emphasizing.

  261. Listen to verse 37.

  262. It will be good for those servants

  263. whose master finds them watching when he comes.

  264. And here's the surprise.

  265. Truly I tell you,

  266. he will dress himself to serve,

  267. will make them recline at the table,

  268. and will come and wait on them.

  269. Do you notice the reversal that's happened?

  270. And what Jesus is saying is

  271. that he is the master who is ready and willing

  272. to reward his faithful followers

  273. in the grace of the gospel

  274. and in the promise that is in the Bible

  275. of an end of time, eternal feast.

  276. It's what heaven is pictured as,

  277. and Jesus says he has come to serve.

  278. It's a theme we find in Jesus' words in other places.

  279. Mark chapter 10 and verse 45.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  280. We read,

  281. The Son of Man did not come to be served,

  282. but to serve,

  283. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  284. Jesus is the king of glory.

  285. And Jesus is our humble servant king.

  286. Jesus came to serve us

  287. by suffering in our place,

  288. by dying and taking on himself

  289. the punishment, the penalty,

  290. that our sin deserves.

  291. He serves us by taking our spiritual debt

  292. and paying it in full

  293. and giving us his perfect righteousness

  294. and giving us true freedom.

  295. There's another passage

  296. where Jesus speaks of being a servant

  297. for his people.

  298. In John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  299. I think the words might be up on the screen

  300. or they should be, I think.

  301. In John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  302. Jesus prepares his followers.

  303. He says,

  304. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  305. And then he speaks about his father's house.

  306. So this is heaven.

  307. My father's house has many rooms.

  308. If that were not so,

  309. would I have told you

  310. that I'm going there

  311. to prepare a place for you?

  312. Jesus goes to make preparation.

  313. And if I go and prepare,

  314. I will come back

  315. and take you to be with me.

  316. So here is the picture.

  317. Jesus is returning

  318. to the glory of heaven.

  319. And he is going to make preparation

  320. an eternal home for his followers.

  321. How does he make that preparation?

  322. By going to the cross to die for us,

  323. to deal with our sin

  324. that separates us from a holy God,

  325. by rising again,

  326. giving us who trust in him

  327. the promise of future eternal life

  328. and our return to heaven.

  329. Jesus prepares the way

  330. and he promises he will return one day

  331. and he will take us to glory forever.

  332. So Jesus picks up this language of serving.

  333. And we also have within the word of God

  334. this wonderful promise of feasting

  335. within the Bible.

  336. So we began singing Psalm 23

  337. and there in Psalm 23,

  338. we have the picture of the king.

  339. The king who prepares a feast

  340. for his people.

  341. The king that gives grace to his people,

  342. giving us strength

  343. for our journey of faith

  344. until we are home,

  345. dwelling in the house of the Lord forever.

  346. Jesus rewards faithful servants then,

  347. but he also gives us grace upon grace today.

  348. Do you know that every time

  349. we gather together for worship

  350. or every time like last week,

  351. as the people of God,

  352. we share the Lord's Supper together,

  353. it's like we're having this appetizer.

  354. Jesus invites us in

  355. and Jesus comes to serve us from his word

  356. and to give us grace,

  357. to feed us spiritually,

  358. all the time anticipating

  359. this eternal feast that's yet to come.

  360. Another way that we can see it,

  361. Jesus' first sign,

  362. first miracle,

  363. John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  364. his first sign that reveals his glory,

  365. it was providing wine at a wedding.

  366. And we have this wonderful symbol

  367. of here is Jesus

  368. and he is the master of the wedding feast.

  369. He is the one who provides

  370. the overflow of the very best wine.

  371. He is the one who has come,

  372. the master who comes to bring joy.

  373. And what Jesus does in this parable

  374. is he promises that to his disciples

  375. as he's on the way to the cross.

  376. Jesus is preparing an eternal, joyful feast.

  377. He is the master who serves us

  378. in dying on the cross to forgive and to save.

  379. And so we have this promise

  380. that we're invited to be encouraged by,

  381. that when we are ready for his return,

  382. when we are trusting in him,

  383. when we are looking to live

  384. in faithful obedience to him,

  385. then we're promised a feast.

  386. We're promised a life of love and joy

  387. that we can hardly even begin to imagine

  388. when Jesus returns

  389. to establish his people forever

  390. in resurrection life

  391. in the new heavens and the newer.

  392. So what's the message for us?

  393. The message is,

  394. because Jesus is coming back again

  395. as judge and king,

  396. and because he does provide reward,

  397. we should be ready.

  398. Today, we should be ready.

  399. Regardless of whatever anyone else is doing

  400. in our family,

  401. in our friendship group,

  402. in our society,

  403. be ready.

  404. All the time, be ready.

  405. To receive this reward,

  406. how do we receive it?

  407. How are we to be ready?

  408. First,

  409. we need to put our faith in Jesus.

  410. The first thing we need

  411. is to be served

  412. by Jesus our master.

  413. We need to trust

  414. that when Jesus died on the cross for sin,

  415. he died on the cross for my sin

  416. to bring me peace with God.

  417. We need to trust and submit to his authority.

  418. So we must first be served,

  419. and then,

  420. to be ready,

  421. we must be serving our master,

  422. being ready for his return.

  423. What does it look like

  424. to be watchful and obedient

  425. as we await Jesus' return?

  426. That's why we read Peter's letter,

  427. 1 Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  428. So remember,

  429. Peter heard these parables,

  430. and these parables stuck with him.

  431. And as he called on the people

  432. to be alert and of sober mind,

  433. here's what he said.

  434. Here's what readiness looks like.

  435. It looks like being a praying people.

  436. And it looks like loving one another.

  437. And it looks like showing hospitality.

  438. And it looks like using our gifts

  439. to serve other people.

  440. In other words,

  441. being ready means living

  442. the faithful, ordinary Christian life

  443. that he calls us to.

  444. But we do that knowing

  445. there's this wonderful reward coming.

  446. So be ready,

  447. because Jesus rewards faithful servants.

  448. Then in verse 39 and 40,

  449. the picture changes.

  450. But the call to be ready remains.

  451. Be ready,

  452. because Jesus' return

  453. will be unexpected.

  454. So in verse 39 and 40,

  455. there is still a house in view.

  456. So let me read.

  457. If the owner of the house

  458. had known at what hour

  459. the thief was coming,

  460. he would not have let his house

  461. be broken into.

  462. You also must be ready,

  463. because the Son of Man

  464. will come at an hour

  465. when you do not expect him.

  466. So now we're picturing a household,

  467. and this time the readiness

  468. is to be ready

  469. for an unexpected visit.

  470. Here's the picture of the thief

  471. in the night.

  472. We need to be ready.

  473. And my favorite picture of this,

  474. and it's never too early

  475. to begin with Home Alone,

  476. is Kevin McAllister,

  477. the star of Home Alone.

  478. If you don't know the movie,

  479. you still have a few weeks

  480. before Christmas,

  481. you need to watch it.

  482. But Kevin McAllister

  483. is a wonderful example of this,

  484. because he is on high alert.

  485. He is ready.

  486. He sets all kind of traps

  487. around his house,

  488. around his uncle's house,

  489. so that when the wet bandits

  490. or the sticky bandits

  491. come to rob the house

  492. or the toy store,

  493. they fail.

  494. Because he is ready.

  495. But,

  496. here's the thing.

  497. the whole story of Home Alone

  498. only works

  499. because Kevin knows

  500. the exact time

  501. when the thieves will arrive.

  502. He overhears them.

  503. Now I can't remember

  504. what time it is.

  505. Nine o'clock, I think,

  506. is when the wet bandits

  507. are going to come to his house.

  508. So he can be ready.

  509. But the truth Jesus brings

  510. is that his return,

  511. while it is certain,

  512. the timing is unknown.

  513. So we must be ready

  514. at all points

  515. as a matter of urgency

  516. because we do not know

  517. when Jesus will come again,

  518. when the Son of Man

  519. will come.

  520. Notice the way Jesus

  521. talks about himself there

  522. in verse 40

  523. as the Son of Man.

  524. We can skip over it,

  525. but it's important

  526. to stop and recognize

  527. here is a huge claim,

  528. actually Jesus is making

  529. about himself.

  530. The Son of Man

  531. as we meet him

  532. in the Old Testament,

  533. this figure from the book of Daniel

  534. in chapter 7,

  535. he is a figure

  536. who appears

  537. in the throne room of heaven.

  538. He is given glory

  539. and authority

  540. and power

  541. to set up

  542. an eternal kingdom.

  543. And so when Jesus says,

  544. I'm the Son of Man,

  545. he's saying he is

  546. the King of glory.

  547. He is the eternal King

  548. whose authority

  549. we need to recognize.

  550. He is,

  551. Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  552. Paul tells us,

  553. God's appointed King

  554. and Judge.

  555. He is the one

  556. who does have authority

  557. over our lives.

  558. He is the one

  559. who will come back

  560. at the end of history.

  561. He will bring in

  562. the new creation,

  563. having judged

  564. and condemned evil

  565. and having purified the earth.

  566. So because of who

  567. Jesus is,

  568. we must be ready

  569. to meet him.

  570. We must be ready

  571. for his certain return.

  572. And we need to be careful

  573. because the timing

  574. is unexpected,

  575. because his return,

  576. the time of that

  577. is unknown,

  578. we must be careful

  579. not to be complacent,

  580. not to be caught

  581. off guard.

  582. A.W. Tozer,

  583. who is a Christian minister

  584. and writer

  585. in the post-war period,

  586. asked the question

  587. in one of his articles,

  588. what happened

  589. to the church's hope

  590. in the return of Christ?

  591. And he was sort of examining,

  592. in this case,

  593. the West,

  594. Canada and the States

  595. particularly,

  596. but recognizing

  597. the danger there is

  598. when a society lives

  599. with a great amount

  600. of affluence

  601. and wealth

  602. and security

  603. and comfort.

  604. We can easily

  605. slip into the trap

  606. of thinking,

  607. this is it.

  608. We're living

  609. the dream right now.

  610. Last week,

  611. we met the fool

  612. who built bigger barns

  613. and said,

  614. oh, brilliant,

  615. I can store up

  616. for myself,

  617. I can eat,

  618. drink and be merry

  619. and lost sight

  620. of matters of eternity.

  621. And there is a danger

  622. for us in that.

  623. Again,

  624. we can listen

  625. to Peter.

  626. This time,

  627. remember what he said

  628. in 2 Peter 3.

  629. He said,

  630. remember that

  631. just because Christ

  632. hasn't come back yet,

  633. it doesn't mean

  634. he's slow

  635. in keeping his promises.

  636. Rather,

  637. it's a sign

  638. of his merciful patience.

  639. That Jesus

  640. hasn't come back yet

  641. has given us

  642. an opportunity

  643. to repent

  644. and to be right

  645. with God

  646. even today.

  647. But he does remind us

  648. that day will come,

  649. will come

  650. like a thief

  651. in the night.

  652. Therefore,

  653. how should we live?

  654. This time,

  655. the emphasis

  656. is on living

  657. holy lives,

  658. godly lives,

  659. as we look forward

  660. to the certain

  661. but the unexpected

  662. coming

  663. of the Lord Jesus.

  664. Now,

  665. before we move

  666. to our last point,

  667. I think it's worth

  668. pausing for a moment

  669. just to consider,

  670. I guess,

  671. a question that might arise

  672. or an objection

  673. that might come

  674. because these parables

  675. focus on the idea

  676. of Jesus as a master

  677. and we are servants.

  678. Maybe we don't like

  679. that idea

  680. of serving anyone.

  681. Maybe that runs

  682. counter to

  683. what we're looking for,

  684. the pursuit

  685. of personal freedom.

  686. There's a couple

  687. of observations

  688. I was reading,

  689. I was dipping

  690. into a book

  691. this week,

  692. I don't do this

  693. very often,

  694. by a French psychiatrist

  695. and the book

  696. was called

  697. The Weariness

  698. of the Self.

  699. Really interesting,

  700. not written

  701. by a Christian

  702. but he was arguing

  703. for a direct

  704. relationship

  705. between

  706. the modern view

  707. that we are self-made

  708. and we are self-sustaining,

  709. okay,

  710. so that and the one hand,

  711. direct line between

  712. those realities,

  713. those ideas

  714. and

  715. the rise of depression

  716. and anxiety.

  717. In our day

  718. he was arguing

  719. that we're being told

  720. nothing is truly forbidden.

  721. You can be

  722. whatever you want to be,

  723. you can do

  724. whatever you want to do,

  725. and we're living

  726. with that language

  727. all the time,

  728. but we're also living

  729. with the reality

  730. that actually nothing

  731. is truly possible.

  732. And he argues

  733. that's why people

  734. are exhausted,

  735. anxious,

  736. and becoming

  737. distressed,

  738. depressed.

  739. Bob Dylan

  740. made the point

  741. in one of his songs

  742. many years ago,

  743. you've got to serve

  744. somebody.

  745. In his song

  746. he said,

  747. it might be the devil

  748. or it might be the Lord

  749. but you've got to

  750. serve somebody.

  751. Maybe nowadays

  752. it might be

  753. yourself

  754. or it might be

  755. the Lord.

  756. And the point

  757. that Alan Ehrenberg,

  758. that psychiatrist

  759. was making

  760. is when we

  761. live to serve

  762. ourselves,

  763. it strikes him

  764. and perhaps

  765. it strikes us

  766. that that can be

  767. a recipe

  768. for melancholy

  769. and misery.

  770. And what we need

  771. to recognize

  772. is that as Jesus

  773. presents himself

  774. as a master

  775. over us,

  776. he is a far

  777. better master.

  778. He is a master

  779. who gives us grace.

  780. He is a master

  781. who gives us himself.

  782. He is a master

  783. who gives us

  784. joy and life

  785. today

  786. and the promise

  787. of a feast

  788. of joy

  789. and life

  790. and love

  791. that lasts

  792. forever.

  793. So when we

  794. recognize

  795. and submit

  796. to Jesus

  797. as a better

  798. master,

  799. we have the promise

  800. of hearing

  801. wonderful words

  802. and end

  803. to exhaustion

  804. and feeling

  805. condemned

  806. and feeling like

  807. we'll never be

  808. anybody.

  809. We will hear

  810. from Jesus,

  811. well done,

  812. good and faithful

  813. servant.

  814. Enter your

  815. masters,

  816. happiness.

  817. Jesus himself

  818. will welcome

  819. his people

  820. to that eternal

  821. home,

  822. that eternal

  823. kingdom,

  824. entry into

  825. a world

  826. of perfect

  827. love.

  828. And as we've

  829. seen in Luke's

  830. gospel,

  831. Jesus will be

  832. welcoming

  833. very unexpected

  834. people into

  835. his kingdom.

  836. He's a good

  837. master.

  838. He welcomes

  839. outsiders.

  840. He welcomes

  841. outcasts.

  842. He welcomes

  843. great sinners.

  844. He welcomes

  845. the poor

  846. and the sick

  847. and the needy.

  848. And he can do

  849. that because

  850. he will go to

  851. the cross

  852. to pay for

  853. our sin.

  854. He will go to

  855. the cross

  856. to show us

  857. amazing grace.

  858. There is no

  859. master

  860. like

  861. our Jesus.

  862. One last

  863. point is

  864. Jesus tells

  865. us to be

  866. ready.

  867. Verse 41

  868. to 48,

  869. be ready

  870. and serve

  871. responsibly.

  872. Peter asks a

  873. question in

  874. verse 41,

  875. Lord, are you

  876. telling this

  877. parable to

  878. us or to

  879. everyone?

  880. Is this just

  881. for us

  882. 12, us

  883. disciples,

  884. who you have

  885. called to

  886. yourself?

  887. Is it for

  888. the whole

  889. church?

  890. And Jesus

  891. answered is,

  892. yes, it's

  893. for leaders

  894. and yes,

  895. it's for

  896. Christians and

  897. church members.

  898. This is for

  899. everybody.

  900. And so he

  901. returns to

  902. give us the

  903. picture in a

  904. slightly different

  905. form.

  906. Verse 42,

  907. who then is

  908. the faithful

  909. and wise

  910. manager whom

  911. the master

  912. puts in

  913. charge of

  914. his servants

  915. to give

  916. them their

  917. food allowance

  918. at the

  919. proper time?

  920. So this

  921. time the

  922. picture of

  923. the master

  924. has gone

  925. away again

  926. for an

  927. unknown

  928. period,

  929. but this

  930. time he's

  931. put someone

  932. in charge.

  933. A household

  934. manager is

  935. to look

  936. after the

  937. day-to-day

  938. running.

  939. And the

  940. question now

  941. becomes,

  942. when the

  943. master

  944. returns,

  945. will he

  946. find that

  947. that servant

  948. has been

  949. responsible

  950. and faithful

  951. or irresponsible

  952. and unfaithful?

  953. And that

  954. will determine

  955. either reward

  956. on the one

  957. hand or

  958. punishment

  959. on the

  960. other.

  961. Let's

  962. focus first

  963. on the

  964. faithful and

  965. responsible.

  966. Verse 42

  967. and 43,

  968. it will be

  969. good,

  970. 43 and 44

  971. rather,

  972. it will

  973. be good

  974. for that

  975. servant

  976. whom the

  977. master finds

  978. doing so

  979. when he

  980. returns.

  981. Truly I

  982. tell you,

  983. he will

  984. put him

  985. in charge

  986. of all

  987. of his

  988. possessions.

  989. And again,

  990. I would

  991. suggest that

  992. this is

  993. perhaps part

  994. of a story

  995. that we

  996. might expect.

  997. If a

  998. servant

  999. serves

  1000. others

  1001. well

  1002. within a

  1003. household,

  1004. we might

  1005. expect

  1006. promotion

  1007. and reward.

  1008. reward.

  1009. We see

  1010. it in

  1011. the

  1012. Old

  1013. Testament

  1014. story

  1015. of

  1016. Joseph.

  1017. In

  1018. our

  1019. junior

  1020. youth

  1021. group

  1022. last

  1023. night,

  1024. we were

  1025. thinking

  1026. about

  1027. the

  1028. story

  1029. of

  1030. Joseph.

  1031. And

  1032. Joseph,

  1033. even when

  1034. he's sold

  1035. to be

  1036. a slave,

  1037. is found

  1038. faithful in

  1039. Potiphar's

  1040. household and

  1041. eventually

  1042. receives

  1043. rewards.

  1044. We might

  1045. expect this

  1046. part of

  1047. the story,

  1048. but again,

  1049. we need to

  1050. pay attention

  1051. to the

  1052. next part

  1053. of the

  1054. story and

  1055. to see

  1056. a surprising

  1057. detail.

  1058. As attention

  1059. turns to

  1060. one who

  1061. is unfaithful

  1062. and

  1063. irresponsible,

  1064. what does

  1065. it look

  1066. like?

  1067. Verse 45,

  1068. the servant

  1069. says,

  1070. my master

  1071. has taken

  1072. a long

  1073. time in

  1074. coming,

  1075. and he

  1076. begins to

  1077. beat the

  1078. other servants

  1079. and to

  1080. eat and

  1081. drink and

  1082. get drunk.

  1083. So he's

  1084. abusing

  1085. his power,

  1086. he's drunk

  1087. and he's

  1088. unprepared,

  1089. and the

  1090. outcome,

  1091. verse 46,

  1092. the master

  1093. will come,

  1094. he will

  1095. cut him

  1096. to pieces

  1097. and assign

  1098. him a

  1099. place with

  1100. the unbelievers.

  1101. Where's the

  1102. emphasis

  1103. falling there?

  1104. A severe

  1105. punishment,

  1106. perhaps a

  1107. shocking

  1108. punishment,

  1109. getting our

  1110. attention.

  1111. This isn't

  1112. talking about

  1113. ordinary,

  1114. everyday things,

  1115. this is

  1116. talking about

  1117. the reality

  1118. of eternal

  1119. judgment.

  1120. This isn't

  1121. just a story

  1122. saying,

  1123. work hard

  1124. at your

  1125. job,

  1126. so when

  1127. head office

  1128. comes,

  1129. or the

  1130. boss

  1131. comes around,

  1132. they will

  1133. say,

  1134. good job,

  1135. and they

  1136. won't say

  1137. you're fired.

  1138. No,

  1139. this is

  1140. Jesus is

  1141. your king

  1142. and your

  1143. master,

  1144. and he

  1145. will come

  1146. back one

  1147. day,

  1148. and we

  1149. will stand

  1150. before him

  1151. on that

  1152. day,

  1153. and he

  1154. will pass

  1155. judgment

  1156. on all

  1157. of our

  1158. lives,

  1159. that will

  1160. lead us

  1161. to an

  1162. eternal

  1163. destination.

  1164. salvation.

  1165. This is

  1166. life or

  1167. death,

  1168. this is

  1169. heaven or

  1170. hell,

  1171. this is

  1172. eternal

  1173. glory or

  1174. eternal

  1175. grief,

  1176. and he

  1177. tells us

  1178. this and

  1179. he warns

  1180. us so

  1181. that we

  1182. would be

  1183. ready,

  1184. that we

  1185. would resolve

  1186. today to

  1187. be ready,

  1188. that we

  1189. would be

  1190. serving

  1191. responsibly.

  1192. We come

  1193. to the

  1194. end of

  1195. verse 47

  1196. and 48,

  1197. and we're

  1198. hearing all

  1199. through the

  1200. parables,

  1201. these themes

  1202. of responsibility

  1203. towards the

  1204. master,

  1205. the reality

  1206. of his

  1207. return,

  1208. and the

  1209. realities of

  1210. reward.

  1211. Jesus reminds

  1212. us that this

  1213. final judgment

  1214. will be

  1215. fitting,

  1216. but I want

  1217. us to

  1218. recognize

  1219. the words

  1220. of Jesus

  1221. at the end

  1222. there,

  1223. from everyone

  1224. who has been

  1225. given much,

  1226. much will be

  1227. demanded,

  1228. and from the

  1229. one who's been

  1230. entrusted with

  1231. much,

  1232. much more

  1233. will be asked.

  1234. The more

  1235. privilege we

  1236. have,

  1237. the greater

  1238. our

  1239. responsibility.

  1240. And I want

  1241. us to

  1242. recognize that

  1243. because of

  1244. this truth,

  1245. that in

  1246. our world

  1247. today,

  1248. there are

  1249. billions,

  1250. literally

  1251. billions of

  1252. people who

  1253. as yet have

  1254. not heard

  1255. about Jesus.

  1256. There are

  1257. over 7,000

  1258. language groups

  1259. in our world

  1260. today that

  1261. don't have

  1262. any part

  1263. of the

  1264. Bible in

  1265. their

  1266. language.

  1267. In our

  1268. world today,

  1269. there are

  1270. around about

  1271. 700 million

  1272. believers in

  1273. the Lord Jesus

  1274. who will

  1275. experience

  1276. persecution

  1277. for their

  1278. faith,

  1279. and they

  1280. don't have

  1281. the freedom

  1282. to have a

  1283. Bible or

  1284. to worship

  1285. in a church

  1286. like we do.

  1287. And I want

  1288. to say that

  1289. because compared

  1290. to so many,

  1291. we have been

  1292. given wonderful

  1293. gospel

  1294. privileges.

  1295. Those gospel

  1296. privileges need

  1297. to be enjoyed

  1298. and also we

  1299. need to live

  1300. responsibly in

  1301. light of all

  1302. that we have

  1303. been given

  1304. that we

  1305. will be

  1306. fine serving

  1307. Jesus and

  1308. his kingdom.

  1309. So Jesus

  1310. tells his

  1311. servants,

  1312. his disciples

  1313. on his way

  1314. to the

  1315. cross,

  1316. be ready.

  1317. Today is a

  1318. good stock

  1319. taking moment.

  1320. Am I

  1321. ready?

  1322. Am I

  1323. living today

  1324. for Jesus

  1325. as my

  1326. master?

  1327. Am I

  1328. engaged in

  1329. serving others

  1330. in his

  1331. name?

  1332. Is the

  1333. honor of

  1334. King

  1335. Jesus

  1336. my main

  1337. concern,

  1338. my main

  1339. motivation

  1340. in life?

  1341. And if

  1342. it's not,

  1343. let this

  1344. be a day

  1345. where we

  1346. can repent,

  1347. where we

  1348. can seek

  1349. renewal,

  1350. so that we

  1351. might live

  1352. responsibly

  1353. today in

  1354. light of

  1355. Christ's

  1356. certain

  1357. return.

  1358. Just like

  1359. those jobs

  1360. that require

  1361. constant

  1362. readiness,

  1363. the soldier

  1364. on tour,

  1365. the fireman,

  1366. the servant,

  1367. to be a

  1368. follower of

  1369. Jesus requires

  1370. us to be

  1371. ready to

  1372. serve him

  1373. in our

  1374. lives as

  1375. we eagerly

  1376. wait for

  1377. his return,

  1378. living today

  1379. in light of

  1380. eternity and

  1381. of our

  1382. returnal

  1383. reward.

  1384. Let's pray

  1385. together.

  1386. Lord God,

  1387. we thank you

  1388. that when

  1389. Jesus came,

  1390. he didn't

  1391. leave us in

  1392. any doubt as

  1393. to how the

  1394. history of

  1395. the world

  1396. will play out

  1397. and how it

  1398. will draw

  1399. to a

  1400. close.

  1401. That gives

  1402. us peace

  1403. when we

  1404. can be

  1405. so anxious

  1406. about wars

  1407. and fighting

  1408. or perhaps

  1409. the climate

  1410. crisis.

  1411. Lord, we

  1412. thank you

  1413. that this

  1414. world is in

  1415. your hands,

  1416. that you

  1417. will bring

  1418. it to an

  1419. end when

  1420. Jesus returns.

  1421. And Lord,

  1422. we recognize

  1423. again that

  1424. Jesus was

  1425. so clear that

  1426. all of us

  1427. will stand

  1428. before his

  1429. judgment seat

  1430. and that we

  1431. must be

  1432. ready.

  1433. And so we

  1434. pray that you

  1435. would, by

  1436. your spirit,

  1437. allow us to

  1438. examine ourselves,

  1439. that you would

  1440. allow us to

  1441. reflect on how

  1442. good a master

  1443. Jesus is,

  1444. that you would

  1445. allow us to

  1446. reflect on the

  1447. call to live

  1448. as servants,

  1449. so that each

  1450. one of us

  1451. would be found

  1452. faithful,

  1453. and to be

  1454. watchful,

  1455. to be found

  1456. trusting in

  1457. Jesus, our

  1458. Lord, our

  1459. King, our

  1460. Saviour, our

  1461. Master, our

  1462. Friend.

  1463. We pray in his

  1464. precious name.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. And now we'll

  1467. close with a

  1468. hymn, we will

  1469. feast in the

  1470. house of Zion,

  1471. a great hymn

  1472. reminding us of

  1473. that eternal

  1474. promise.

  1475. So let's again

  1476. stand as we

  1477. close our time

  1478. together.

  1479. we will feast

  1480. in the house of

  1481. Zion, we will

  1482. sing with our

  1483. hearts restored.

  1484. He has done

  1485. great things,

  1486. we will say

  1487. together, we

  1488. will feast and

  1489. weep no more.

  1490. be burned by the

  1491. fire.

  1492. He is the Lord,

1493. our God, we are not

  1494. consumed by the

  1495. flood.

  1496. upheld, we will

  1497. upheld, we will

  1498. be

  1499. gathered up, we will

  1500. feast in the house

  1501. of Zion, we will

  1502. sing with our hearts

  1503. restored.

1504. Lord, we will feast and

1505. we will feast and weep no more.

  1506. Christ as new

  1507. Lord, we will

  1508. ausp tener

  1509. on the

  1510. earthstage and

  1511. dile

  1512. for eis

1513. afraid for the promised morning oh how long God of Jacob be my strength we will feast in house of

1514. Zion we will sing with our hearts restored he has done great things we will say together we will feast and weep no more

1515. every vow we've broken and betrayed you are the faithful one from the garden to the grave

1516. bind us together bring shalom we will feast in the house of Zion we will sing with our hearts restored

1517. he has done great things we will say together we will feast and weep no more

1518. we use these words from the end of second Thessalonians chapter 2 as we close may our Lord

    2 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

1519. Jesus Christ himself and God our Father who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement

1520. and good hope encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word amen
