  1. pray.

  2. Now we're going to read, spend some time in Luke chapter 13, verses 10 to 21. I should have said

    Luke 13:10–21

  3. there's church Bibles available at the back. If you're using one of those Bibles, we're on page

  4. 1046 as we continue to think about knowing the times, the times that we happen to find ourselves

  5. living in. Verses 10 to 21 of Luke 13. On a Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,

  6. and a woman was there who'd been crippled by a spirit for 18 years. She was bent over and could

  7. not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, women,

  8. you are set free from your infirmity. Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened

  9. up and praised God. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said

  10. to the people, there are six days for work, so come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.

  11. The Lord answered him, you hypocrites, doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from

  12. the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,

  13. whom Satan has kept bound for 18 long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?

  14. When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the

  15. wonderful things he was doing. Then Jesus asked, what is the kingdom of God like? What shall I

  16. compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and

  17. became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches. Again, he asked, what shall I compare the kingdom of

  18. God to? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about 30 kilograms of flour until it worked all

  19. through the dough. Amen. So this morning, what I want us to do is to use the story that we've just

  20. read to provide a lens on the world that we live in. Think back to that song that we were eventually

  21. able to sing in its first line, do we feel the world is broken? And I would suggest it's almost

  22. impossible not to. Suffering is all around us, whether we're thinking globally or personally.

  23. There is the brokenness inside of us that maybe only we are aware of. The world seems to be infected

  24. by evil. The realities of distress and disability are normal in our days.

  25. But there's hope in our story, isn't there? You know, if we feel the world is broken, do we also

  26. know that all the dark won't stop the light from getting through? There is in this story a reminder

  27. that with the coming of Jesus, God's Son and King, this great mission of mercy, this establishing of

  28. His kingdom, He is restoring, He is redeeming, and we see Him stopping Satan in His tracks.

  29. And so this story is also giving us a lens by which to see God's plan for His world.

  30. Because we need to remember that suffering and evil, while it seems normal to us, is abnormal,

  31. in that it was never part of God's good creation at the beginning. And so this miracle helps us to

  32. see the promise from Jesus of a new normal, of a world free of suffering, of a world free of evil.

  33. So let's watch and listen together that King Jesus might bring hope, bring hope to us when we feel broken

  34. and weary. Four scenes for us to consider. The first is of this woman who has been crippled by cruelty.

  35. The story begins on a Sabbath with Jesus teaching. Jesus was the great teacher. So He's in a synagogue,

  36. a place of worship, and into that scene of teaching shuffles this woman. She's

  37. been crippled by a spirit for 18 years, bent over, unable to straighten. 18 years of desperate need.

  38. Let's try and picture for a moment the impact of this on every part of her experience. Her ability to do

  39. her everyday tasks. Her ability to get a good night's sleep. Her relationships. Her ability to worship. Her sense of contentment. Perhaps her dignity. Her standing.

  40. All affected for 18 years. And notice,

  41. So the man who wrote this gospel was a medical doctor, Dr. Luke. So notice that Dr. Luke wants to take us beyond just her physical suffering to point out,

  42. and this is the only time that he points this out,

  43. she'd been crippled by a spirit

  44. for 18 years.

  45. He recognizes there's a spiritual dimension, there's spiritual attack.

  46. Notice that Jesus agrees, verse 16.

  47. This woman is a daughter of Abraham,

  48. whom Satan has kept bound for 18 long years.

  49. Okay, so the very fact that this is the only time it's mentioned,

  50. it means that we

  51. can't draw a straight line and say,

  52. every time someone suffers,

  53. there's spiritual attack.

  54. But it means it can be the case.

  55. And certainly,

  56. Luke and Jesus want to shed light on the reality

  57. of the presence of our evil enemy,

  58. Satan.

  59. Described in the Bible as our adversary.

  60. Or as the accuser.

  61. The one who hates God and hates

  62. God's people and hates

  63. God's image bearers.

  64. And we need to understand that because that helps to explain

  65. the world as it is.

  66. It's been pointed out that one of the

  67. the weaknesses of modern materialism,

  68. you know,

  69. all that we see is all that there is,

  70. ignoring the spiritual dimension,

  71. it means it's very limited in its ability

  72. to explain the depths of evil.

  73. Because if it's only explained in physical terms,

  74. then the problem must be with us.

  75. Therefore, what we need is

  76. maybe a little bit more education.

  77. Or if we could just change social conditions,

  78. or if we could offer better treatments,

  79. then we would expect more progress.

  80. But the modern technological West is not seeing progress,

  81. are we?

  82. Because the problem runs much deeper

  83. and is much darker than that.

  84. Someone said to me recently that the West

  85. is actually getting more Christian in the last 10 years

  86. without even trying,

  87. in part,

  88. as people are recognizing

  89. the depth and scale of evil and wickedness is so great,

  90. there has to be a better place to find answers

  91. than just in us

  92. and our own abilities and intelligence.

  93. Notice that the Bible and Jesus

  94. helps to account for how deep and complex

  95. the problem of evil is

  96. by honestly showing us

  97. our adversary, the devil,

  98. pointing to the reality and power of Satan.

  99. We need to recognize

  100. that there is a personal Satan

  101. who hates God,

  102. who attacks image bearers,

  103. who wants to steal dignity

  104. and hope and life.

  105. And we see his work in this woman

  106. as she has been crippled

  107. by his cruelty.

  108. Now let's use that as a picture

  109. because in truth,

  110. that can help us to understand

  111. something of the same method

  112. that Satan or the devil

  113. still likes to apply today.

  114. He would love to cripple us

  115. and to crush us,

  116. perhaps not physically,

  117. but perhaps mentally

  118. or emotionally.

  119. Perhaps with weaknesses

  120. that we can't escape from,

  121. those chains that can bind us

  122. so tightly.

  123. Perhaps crippled by a sense

  124. of self-hate.

  125. Perhaps crippled by the scars

  126. of past evil acts.

  127. Perhaps crippled and crushed

  128. by our doubts or our fears.

  129. Perhaps crippled and unable

  130. because of an addiction.

  131. Perhaps weakened by sinful habits

  132. and patterns.

  133. We need to recognize the reality

  134. and the power of Satan.

  135. But we need to recognize

  136. that he is not equal

  137. to Jesus.

  138. C.S. Lewis

  139. in the Screwtape Letter

  140. said that people can make

  141. two equal and opposite mistakes

  142. when it comes to the devil.

  143. One, we can deny

  144. that the devil exists.

  145. But secondly,

  146. we can take an unhealthy interest

  147. in him

  148. and we can live

  149. in great fear of him

  150. when the one who we should honor

  151. and fear

  152. is the one who is far greater.

  153. It's Jesus.

  154. Maybe you feel like

  155. this woman today.

  156. Maybe you feel like

  157. you've dragged yourself

  158. to church

  159. and you feel

  160. that sense of

  161. being spiritually

  162. crippled.

  163. You've come to the right place

  164. because in Jesus

  165. there is the hope

  166. and the promise

  167. of deep healing.

  168. Because our second scene

  169. moves us from this woman

  170. being crippled

  171. by cruelty

  172. to being cured

  173. by the compassion

  174. of Christ.

  175. We don't know

  176. what the woman's expectation

  177. was that day

  178. as she went to worship

  179. but we do know

  180. that she met Jesus.

  181. Jesus, the friend

  182. of sinners and sufferers.

  183. Jesus, a saviour

  184. of compassion.

  185. Jesus, the Lord

  186. of King,

  187. the Lord and King

  188. of mercy.

  189. And she was wonderfully cured.

  190. Look with me

  191. at verses 12 and 13.

  192. When Jesus saw her

  193. he called her forward

  194. and said to her

  195. woman you are set free

  196. from your infirmity.

  197. Then he put his hands

  198. on her

  199. and immediately

  200. she straightened up

  201. and praised God.

  202. Notice again

  203. how often we're told

  204. Jesus saw her.

  205. Jesus picked her

  206. out of the crowd.

  207. We don't know

  208. if this woman

  209. and her condition

  210. mattered to anyone else

  211. but it mattered to Jesus.

  212. Jesus wasn't scanning

  213. the room

  214. for the very important

  215. person section.

  216. No, he has his eyes

  217. on those who need

  218. his mercy.

  219. Notice too

  220. that Jesus

  221. didn't just see her

  222. Jesus saved her.

  223. Look at the freedom language.

  224. You are set free.

  225. That prison of her pain

  226. Jesus has ripped

  227. the door open

  228. and given her release.

  229. That slavery to Satan

  230. instantly broken.

  231. Notice here

  232. is one of the times

  233. when Jesus

  234. doesn't just speak

  235. he also acts

  236. he put his hands out

  237. and he touched it.

  238. Jesus loves crossing

  239. barriers to show

  240. how much

  241. he loves people.

  242. There was a great

  243. stigma

  244. about disability.

  245. There was a great

  246. stigma of men

  247. in their dealings

  248. with women

  249. but Jesus

  250. crosses

  251. those barriers

  252. to show

  253. his compassion

  254. and his care.

  255. Jesus

  256. triumphed

  257. in her also.

  258. There was a

  259. spiritual

  260. battle

  261. taking place

  262. over her heart

  263. and her life

  264. and wonderfully

  265. there was no

  266. context.

  267. Jesus

  268. Jesus

  269. is the light

  270. who always

  271. drives out

  272. the darkness.

  273. That's why

  274. he came.

  275. Remember

  276. Jesus is on

  277. this journey

  278. to Jerusalem

  279. and he knows

  280. that that road

  281. is going to take him

  282. to Calvary.

  283. He is the king

  284. who will go

  285. to the cross

  286. and there

  287. on the cross

  288. a great

  289. spiritual battle

  290. will take place

  291. and Jesus

  292. will fight

  293. and Jesus

  294. will defeat

  295. Satan.

  296. Jesus

  297. will deal

  298. with sin.

  299. Jesus

  300. will win

  301. the battle

  302. over death

  303. in his suffering

  304. in his dying

  305. in his rising

  306. so that he is

  307. able to give

  308. as a gift

  309. his merciful

  310. love

  311. and salvation

  312. to you

  313. and to me.

  314. This woman's

  315. story

  316. though unique

  317. to her

  318. is a story

  319. big enough

  320. to include

  321. your story

  322. and mine

  323. when we

  324. understand

  325. that Jesus

  326. who is

  327. the creator

  328. of us all

  329. is the one

  330. who sees us.

  331. He sees us

  332. today

  333. however you

  334. came in

  335. however you

  336. feel about

  337. yourself

  338. whatever those

  339. crippling

  340. effects of

  341. suffering

  342. and weakness

  343. you live

  344. with

  345. Jesus

  346. sees you

  347. and Jesus

  348. came

  349. to save

  350. you

  351. to break

  352. that power

  353. of evil

  354. and darkness

  355. to give hope

  356. and light

  357. and life

  358. to forgive sin

  359. and guilt

  360. to restore

  361. the image

  362. of God

  363. in us

  364. to set us

  365. free

  366. from shame

  367. and condemnation

  368. to bring

  369. God's love

  370. to you.

  371. The heart

  372. of Jesus

  373. in the synagogue

  374. was a heart

  375. moved by

  376. compassion.

  377. The heart

  378. of Jesus

  379. in heaven

  380. is unchanged.

  381. He still

  382. loves.

  383. He still

  384. shows mercy.

  385. I just want

  386. to pause

  387. on this

  388. scene

  389. to ask

  390. a couple

  391. of questions.

  392. The first

  393. question is

  394. what about

  395. healing?

  396. That is an

  397. important thing.

  398. Maybe many

  399. of us

  400. have wrestled

  401. with this

  402. in our own

  403. experience

  404. or with

  405. others.

  406. Why doesn't

  407. he fix

  408. me

  409. personally

  410. or why

  411. does he

  412. permit so

  413. much

  414. suffering

  415. either

  416. in my

  417. family

  418. or in

  419. the world?

  420. Does he

  421. even

  422. care?

  423. Many

  424. people

  425. even

  426. Christian

  427. people

  428. have

  429. those

  430. questions.

  431. They're not

  432. just questions

  433. that are

  434. talked about

  435. in a

  436. philosophy

  437. class.

  438. They're

  439. deeply

  440. personal

  441. questions.

  442. Questions

  443. with no

  444. easy answers.

  445. But there

  446. are some

  447. thoughts

  448. to share

  449. briefly.

  450. One to

  451. encourage us

  452. to recognize

  453. that Jesus

  454. can still

  455. heal.

  456. Sometimes

  457. Jesus heals

  458. people instantly.

  459. Sometimes

  460. he does

  461. that through

  462. modern medicine

  463. and over

  464. time.

  465. but he

  466. doesn't

  467. always

  468. heal

  469. in this

  470. life.

  471. For the

  472. people of

  473. God

  474. there is

  475. promise

  476. for healing

  477. that is

  478. eternal.

  479. But he

  480. doesn't

  481. always

  482. heal

  483. in this

  484. life.

  485. It's

  486. important

  487. for us

  488. to recognize

  489. that Jesus

  490. at the

  491. same

  492. time

  493. does

  494. care

  495. about

  496. our

  497. physical

  498. needs

  499. and

  500. our

  501. spiritual

  502. needs.

  503. We see

  504. that through

  505. his

  506. ministry.

  507. And we

  508. see that

  509. because our

  510. future hope

  511. is a

  512. physical

  513. hope.

  514. Perfect

  515. physical

  516. life

  517. and a

  518. renewed

  519. physical

  520. creation

  521. where we

  522. have

  523. perfect

  524. physical

  525. resurrection

  526. bodies

  527. where we

  528. meet our

  529. risen,

  530. perfected,

  531. glorified

  532. Jesus.

  533. The

  534. physical

  535. matters.

  536. We also

  537. know that

  538. Jesus does

  539. care about

  540. suffering.

  541. Isaiah 53,

  542. that great

  543. reflection on

  544. the suffering

  545. servant.

  546. He took

  547. up our

  548. pain

  549. and bore

  550. our

  551. suffering.

  552. We can

  553. never say

  554. of our

  555. God and

  556. our

  557. Savior

  558. that he

  559. doesn't

  560. care,

  561. that he

  562. is

  563. distant.

  564. He knows

  565. by

  566. experience

  567. suffering.

  568. We have

  569. a God

  570. that we

  571. pray to

  572. who

  573. understands.

  574. But we

  575. also need

  576. to recognize

  577. that in

  578. this world

  579. as it's

  580. scarred

  581. by sin,

  582. suffering

  583. will always

  584. be

  585. normal.

  586. And that

  587. explains

  588. the priority

  589. that sometimes

  590. surprises people

  591. when it

  592. comes to

  593. Jesus.

  594. Jesus'

  595. first and

  596. most important

  597. priority is

  598. for the

  599. deeper

  600. healing,

  601. for

  602. spiritual

  603. healing,

  604. dealing with

  605. the problem

  606. of sin

  607. that separates

  608. us from

  609. our God.

  610. I got that

  611. phrase,

  612. deeper healing,

  613. from Joni

  614. Erickson

  615. Tadda.

  616. Many of you

  617. may have

  618. heard of

  619. Joni.

  620. She has

  621. been paralyzed

  622. for over

  623. 50 years.

  624. She has

  625. gone through

  626. bouts of

  627. cancer.

  628. She's

  629. always a

  630. wise and

  631. mature voice

  632. to listen

  633. to on

  634. questions of

  635. suffering.

  636. She is

  637. somebody who

  638. longed for

  639. a number of

  640. years for

  641. physical healing

  642. until she

  643. read actually

  644. in Luke

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  645. chapter 5,

  646. the story,

  647. if you remember,

  648. when there was

  649. a paralyzed

  650. man let

  651. down from

  652. into a

  653. room where

  654. Jesus was

  655. teaching.

  656. and everybody

  657. could see

  658. what this

  659. man's great

  660. need was

  661. or so they

  662. thought until

  663. Jesus said

  664. to him,

  665. son,

  666. your sins

  667. are forgiven.

  668. And Joni

  669. understood then

  670. that as

  671. significant as

  672. being freed

  673. from being

  674. unable to

  675. move,

  676. it's not as

  677. significant

  678. eternally as

  679. being free

  680. from sin.

  681. She talked

  682. about fixing

  683. a back or

  684. fixing legs or

  685. fixing a body

  686. as like

  687. finger work,

  688. easy work

  689. for Jesus.

  690. But forgiving

  691. sin was the

  692. hard work

  693. requiring the

  694. strong arm

  695. of salvation.

  696. Our redemption

  697. required the

  698. blood of Jesus

  699. to be spilled,

  700. those strong

  701. and loving arms

  702. to be stretched

  703. out on the

  704. cross for that.

  705. But in that

  706. deeper healing,

  707. and we need to

  708. understand this,

  709. in that deeper

  710. healing when we

  711. are right with

  712. Jesus,

  713. when we are

  714. right with

  715. God,

  716. there is the

  717. promise that

  718. one day in

  719. the new

  720. creation,

  721. there will be

  722. complete healing

  723. for all eternity

  724. of body and

  725. mind.

  726. No more

  727. paralysis,

  728. no more being

  729. crippled,

  730. there will be

  731. joy that

  732. lasts forever.

  733. There is the

  734. promise in the

  735. gospel of that

  736. new normal.

  737. Let's move to

  738. our third

  739. scene.

  740. criticism.

  741. And it may

  742. take us by

  743. surprise as we

  744. meet cold-hearted

  745. criticism.

  746. So imagine the

  747. drama that's just

  748. happened in this

  749. synagogue.

  750. Jesus is teaching,

  751. woman walks in,

  752. he stops to pay

  753. attention, he

  754. talks to her, he

  755. touches her, her

  756. back straightens.

  757. And if we were to

  758. stop the action

  759. there and to ask

  760. the question,

  761. what happens next?

  762. I imagine we're

  763. expecting what we

  764. see at the end of

  765. verse 17, the

  766. people were

  767. delighted with all

  768. the wonderful

  769. things he was

  770. doing.

  771. That seems to

  772. make absolute

  773. sense, doesn't

  774. it?

  775. But we also get

  776. that other

  777. reaction.

  778. We get the

  779. reaction of the

  780. super-religious,

  781. living by rule

  782. keeping as a way

  783. to be right with

  784. God.

  785. Listen to this

  786. man, indignant,

  787. angry, upset,

  788. because Jesus

  789. had healed on

  790. the Sabbath,

  791. the synagogue

  792. leader said to

  793. the people,

  794. there are six

  795. days for work,

  796. so come and be

  797. healed on those

  798. days, not on

  799. the Sabbath.

  800. Not celebrating,

  801. he's criticizing.

  802. This is the

  803. wrong day of the

  804. week to be

  805. healing someone.

  806. It got me

  807. thinking about

  808. the badge that

  809. sometimes you see,

  810. the sticker that

  811. sometimes you see,

  812. not all disabilities

  813. are visible.

  814. The women's

  815. spiritual disability

  816. was really clear

  817. for all to see.

  818. But these

  819. Pharisees,

  820. unable to see

  821. their spiritual

  822. disability and

  823. inability,

  824. nor were the

  825. people around

  826. them.

  827. They were

  828. slaves.

  829. This man was a

  830. slave, but he

  831. couldn't see it.

  832. He was far

  833. from God's

  834. heart of mercy.

  835. He was far

  836. from God's

  837. kingdom.

  838. This synagogue

  839. leader,

  840. when he

  841. criticizes

  842. Jesus about

  843. what he's

  844. doing on the

  845. Sabbath, he

  846. has lost the

  847. plot, both of

  848. God's plan for

  849. the Sabbath and

  850. God's plan of

  851. salvation.

  852. Jesus has

  853. called himself

  854. the Lord of the

  855. Sabbath.

  856. And if we were to

  857. ask Jesus, he

  858. would say, the

  859. Sabbath is a

  860. perfect day for a

  861. miracle.

  862. It's the perfect

  863. day to set someone

  864. free.

  865. Why?

  866. Because the

  867. Sabbath always

  868. spoke about

  869. rest.

  870. A rest to

  871. enjoy and to

  872. worship creation

  873. and to worship

  874. and to enjoy the

  875. creator God.

  876. And what's

  877. happened on this

  878. Sabbath, this

  879. woman has been

  880. given rest.

  881. Rest from her

  882. pain.

  883. Resting so she's

  884. able to glorify

  885. God.

  886. And,

  887. wonderfully, she's

  888. become a new

  889. creation.

  890. redemption.

  891. It's a great

  892. day for this

  893. miracle.

  894. The Sabbath also

  895. spoke of redemption

  896. and rescue.

  897. The people of God

  898. were told, every

  899. Sabbath, you are to

  900. remember that once

  901. upon a time you

  902. were slaves, but

  903. God set you free.

  904. Jesus, the

  905. Savior King, has

  906. acted to give this

  907. woman freedom and

  908. rescue.

  909. It's a great day for

  910. this miracle.

  911. mercy.

  912. And the Sabbath

  913. also spoke of

  914. mercy.

  915. Look with me at

  916. verse 15.

  917. It says, you

  918. hypocrites, doesn't

  919. each of you on the

  920. Sabbath untie your

  921. ox or donkey from

  922. the stall and lead

  923. it out to give it

  924. to water?

  925. Then you should have

  926. done the same.

  927. Jesus is saying, God

  928. made provision for

  929. mercy for animals in

  930. the Old Testament.

  931. Mercy for them.

  932. There must be, by

  933. God's design, mercy

  934. for suffering people

  935. too.

  936. So when we think

  937. about how we use

  938. our Sunday, don't

  939. we see it as a

  940. wonderful gift from

  941. God?

  942. Here we have this

  943. moment in the hustle

  944. and bustle and the

  945. busyness of our

  946. weeks.

  947. Here is a time to

  948. rest, to worship.

  949. Here is a time to

  950. remember our salvation

  951. and our Savior.

  952. And we have Sunday

  953. as a day for showing

  954. mercy, for showing

  955. kindness to one

  956. another and also to

  957. others too.

  958. We can give the gift

  959. of Sabbath to other

  960. people as we seek to

  961. show mercy.

  962. But in this synagogue

  963. leader, we are being

  964. reminded, aren't we,

  965. of the danger of

  966. cold-hearted religion,

  967. of a lack of love

  968. and grace towards

  969. others, of a desire

  970. to find fault, of a

  971. failure to celebrate

  972. God's work in the

  973. lives of someone

  974. else.

  975. We also see a level

  976. of foolishness, a

  977. foolishness that

  978. presumes that the

  979. problems of evil can

  980. be sorted by us.

  981. The problem lies too

  982. deep.

  983. We need to be running

  984. to Jesus to find

  985. help.

  986. He is the only

  987. Savior.

  988. Jesus calls him a

  989. hypocrite.

  990. He was wearing a

  991. mask, looking really

  992. religious, while his

  993. heart was not right

  994. towards God, not

  995. looking to him for

  996. salvation.

  997. And that too stands as

  998. a warning, doesn't it?

  999. We can so easily fool

1000. others with how we are,

  1001. how we're doing

  1002. spiritually.

  1003. We can even fool

  1004. ourselves.

  1005. But we need to

  1006. understand that we can

  1007. never fool God.

  1008. We need humility.

  1009. We need repentance to

1010. turn from our sin to

  1011. trust in Jesus.

1012. That we would run to

  1013. him to find the

  1014. compassion that this

  1015. woman found.

  1016. Last scene, and it's

  1017. about the coming of

  1018. the kingdom in verses

  1019. 18 to 21.

  1020. So in this scene,

  1021. Jesus moves from

  1022. being the hero and

  1023. the focus of the

  1024. story to become a

  1025. storyteller.

  1026. And these stories are

  1027. connected to what's

  1028. just happened.

  1029. He wants us to

  1030. understand the

  1031. significance of the

  1032. woman's story for our

  1033. story and for the

  1034. story of the world.

  1035. Because what's

  1036. happened here in this

  1037. synagogue is that

  1038. Jesus, in this

  1039. moment, he's

  1040. interrupted the

  1041. normal.

  1042. suffering and evil

  1043. is normal until

  1044. Jesus arrives.

  1045. And his grace

  1046. touches the broken

  1047. and healing comes.

  1048. Suffering and evil

  1049. is normal until the

  1050. kingdom of God breaks

  1051. into the present.

  1052. That's what we see

  1053. happening in that

  1054. synagogue.

  1055. And these parables,

  1056. really simple

  1057. parables about small

  1058. things that grow,

  1059. you know, the tiny

  1060. seed that becomes the

  1061. huge tree, the little

1062. bit of yeast with that

  1063. spreading influence

  1064. that goes through

  1065. the dough, is

  1066. intended to say to

  1067. us that the miracle

  1068. is like that seed,

  1069. it's like that yeast.

1070. What we saw in the

  1071. synagogue on that day

  1072. was one victory of

  1073. Jesus over Satan in

  1074. the life of one.

  1075. But that brings with

  1076. it the promise of

  1077. greater victory.

  1078. It anticipates the

  1079. cross and the

  1080. resurrection.

  1081. It points to his

  1082. ultimate victory, to

  1083. his return, having

  1084. dealt with sin and

  1085. evil and Satan

  1086. forever to establish a

  1087. perfect world and a

  1088. kingdom with no end.

  1089. These stories are

1090. saying to us that what

1091. Jesus does in that one

  1092. woman's life, he will

1093. do in the lives of

  1094. billions of people

  1095. since her.

1096. He would do in our

  1097. lives today if we

  1098. would ask him.

  1099. Jesus is saying what

  1100. happened in that

  1101. synagogue will spread

  1102. across the globe.

1103. hope so that there are

  1104. hundreds of millions of

  1105. followers of Jesus

  1106. worshipping him today

  1107. from every nation.

  1108. That the mercy and

  1109. compassion that was

  1110. shown in that

  1111. synagogue, that that

  1112. influence would spread,

  1113. would spread by the

  1114. work of the Spirit.

  1115. It would spread through

1116. the work of the people

  1117. of God.

1118. It would spread as men

1119. and women and boys and

  1120. girls who love Jesus

1121. would seek to live like

  1122. Jesus, to show kindness

  1123. and compassion and

  1124. mercy.

  1125. And as people would

1126. come to hear the good

1127. news that there is a

  1128. Savior for them, bringing

  1129. healing and hope and

  1130. comfort and joy.

1131. Jesus in this story and

1132. in his stories, Jesus in

1133. his journey to the cross is

  1134. preparing us for that

  1135. wonderful promise of a

  1136. new normal.

1137. that in Jesus' kingdom, the

1138. kingdom that has no end,

1139. there will be no sickness,

1140. no pain, no disease, no

  1141. brokenness, no fear, no

  1142. suffering, no death.

1143. That in the coming of

1144. Jesus is the answer to the

  1145. problem of evil.

1146. It will not be fixed by

  1147. education.

1148. It will not be fixed by

  1149. peace treaties.

1150. It will not be fixed by

  1151. better health care or

  1152. moral self-improvement.

1153. It will only be fixed in

1154. and through the work of

1155. King Jesus in his first

1156. coming at the cross and

  1157. the resurrection as he

  1158. comes into hearts and

1159. lives and as he comes

1160. again as the king of

  1161. glory.

1162. Jesus is good news for

  1163. broken, weary, suffering

  1164. people.

  1165. for people like us.

  1166. He promises mercy,

  1167. compassion, salvation

1168. with the hope of future

  1169. glory to come.

1170. Let's pray and give thanks.

1171. Lord Jesus, we thank you

1172. that this story gives us a

1173. window into your plans and

  1174. purposes, your mission of

  1175. mercy.

1176. Lord, we thank you that you

  1177. saw and you saved.

  1178. You touched and you

  1179. triumphed.

1180. Lord, thank you for your

  1181. glory displayed in that

  1182. woman's healing and pushing

1183. back the darkness of Satan

1184. and letting the light of

1185. God shine on that day.

1186. Lord, thank you that that

  1187. light continues to shine.

1188. Thank you for the promise

1189. that we have of certain

1190. salvation when we trust in

  1191. Jesus, of the forgiveness

1192. of sin, of the removal of

  1193. guilt and condemnation, of

1194. the hope of a new heavens and

  1195. a new earth.

1196. Lord, we pray that in our

1197. weakness we would come to you

1198. for grace and strength, that

1199. we would keep looking to

1200. Jesus, or you'd help us to

1201. look to Jesus as Savior for

1202. the very first time today, that

1203. we would turn from our sin and

1204. depend on him and live with

1205. hope for that new normal that

1206. the Bible promises, that Jesus

1207. promises through his death and

  1208. resurrection.

1209. We pray all in Jesus' name.

  1210. Amen.

1211. Now, we'll finish our time this

  1212. morning with a hymn.

1213. Our God will go before us.

1214. Just a reminder, we have tea and

1215. coffee after the service, and we

  1216. meet again at 5.30, if you're

  1217. able.

  1218. So let's stand and let's sing

  1219. together.

1220. Our God will go before us and guide

  1221. us by his presence.

1222. What confidence this promises, we will

  1223. never walk alone.

1224. The unknown pass through shadows, our

  1225. hearts fear not tomorrow.

1226. For every step is faithfulness, is the

  1227. truth that lies away.

1228. Our God will go before us.

1229. The Lord of hosts is with us.

1230. God will go before us and guide us.

1231. The Lord of hosts is with us.

1232. The Lord of hosts is with us and guide us.

1233. For his grace will bring us home.

1234. The Lord of hosts is with us and guide us.

1235. The Lord of hosts is with us and guide us.

1236. Though evil forms against us.

1237. Though heaven will defend us.

1238. The gates of hell shall not prevail.

1239. For the battle is the life.

1240. Our God will go before us and guide us.

1241. Our God will go before us.

1242. The Lord of hosts is with us.

1243. Though praise the one who leads us on.

1244. For his grace will bring us home.

1245. For his grace will bring us home.

1246. Now send us with your presence.

  1247. And lead us home.

  1248. And lead us home.

  1249. To heaven.

1250. Where songs of sorrow strain no more.

1251. And thy revery breath is praise.

1252. Our God will go before us.

1253. The Lord of hosts is with us.

1254. Oh praise the one who leads us on.

1255. For his grace will bring us home.

1256. Our God will go before us.

1257. The Lord of hosts is with us.

1258. Oh praise the one who leads us on.

1259. For his grace will bring us home.

1260. Close with these words from Romans 15.

1261. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace

1262. as you trust in him.

1263. So that you may overflow with hope

1264. by the power of the Holy Spirit.
