  1. The scripture reading comes from John chapter 7 and 8 this week.

    John 7 chapter mention

  2. In chapter 7, verse 37, we read,

  3. On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowd,

  4. Anyone who is thirsty may come to me. Anyone who believes in me may come and drink.

  5. For the scriptures declare, rivers of living water will flow from his heart.

  6. When he said living water, he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him.

  7. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.

  8. When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared,

  9. Surely this man is the prophet we've been expecting.

  10. Others said, he is the Messiah.

  11. Still others said, but he can be.

  12. Will the Messiah come from Galilee?

  13. For the scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David in Bethlehem,

  14. the village where King David was born.

  15. So the crowd was divided about him.

  16. Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.

  17. Then in chapter 8, verse 31.

  18. Jesus said to the people who believed in him,

  19. You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings,

  20. and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

  21. But we're descendants of Abraham, they said.

  22. We have never been slaves to anyone.

  23. What do you mean you will be set free?

  24. And verse 48.

  25. The people retorted,

  26. You Samaritan devil!

  27. Didn't we say all along that you were possessed by a demon?

  28. No, Jesus said.

  29. I have no demon in me.

  30. For I honor my father, and you dishonor me.

  31. And though I have no wish to glorify myself,

  32. God is going to glorify me.

  33. He is the true judge.

  34. I tell you the truth.

  35. Anyone who obeys my teaching will never die.

  36. The people said,

  37. Now we know you're possessed by a demon.

  38. Even Abraham and the prophets died.

  39. But you say,

  40. Anyone who obeys my teaching will never die.

  41. Are you greater than our father Abraham?

  42. He died, and so did the prophets.

  43. Who do you think you are?

  44. Jesus answered,

  45. If I won't glorify myself,

  46. It doesn't count.

  47. But it is my father who will glorify me.

  48. You say,

  49. He is our God.

  50. But you don't even know him.

  51. I know him.

  52. If I said otherwise,

  53. I would be as great a liar as you.

  54. But I do know him and obey him.

  55. Your father Abraham rejoiced

  56. as he looked forward to my coming.

  57. He saw it and was glad.

  58. The people said,

  59. You aren't even 50 years old.

  60. How can you say you have seen Abraham?

  61. Jesus answered,

  62. I tell you the truth.

  63. Before Abraham was even born,

  64. I am.

  65. At that point,

  66. they picked up stones to throw at him.

  67. But Jesus was hidden from them

  68. and left the temple.

  69. This is the word of God.

  70. Great.

  71. Ellen,

  72. thank you so much for reading for us this morning.

  73. And good morning, everybody.

  74. It is good to see you,

  75. to see so many faces,

  76. to see a couple of people

  77. from different parts of the world.

  78. I see Amy Darlingan from New Zealand

  79. and a couple of others.

  80. And of course,

  81. those of us in Hong Kong,

  82. great to see you as well.

  83. I wish we could see you face to face.

  84. But hopefully,

  85. we will do that sometime

  86. in the coming weeks and months.

  87. For the last 2,000 years,

  88. Jesus of Nazareth

  89. has provoked a lot of curiosity,

  90. fascination,

  91. for some people,

  92. anger,

  93. maybe even hatred,

  94. certainly a lot of intrigue.

  95. About 100 years after Jesus

  96. was born and died and raised again,

  97. there was a Jewish historian

  98. by the name of Flavius Josephus.

  99. And he wrote this.

  100. He said,

  101. There was this man called Jesus,

  102. a very wise man,

  103. if indeed you should call him a man.

  104. He was one who performed surprising deeds.

  105. He was a teacher of great truth.

  106. He won over many Jews and Greeks.

  107. Was he possibly the Christ,

  108. the Messiah?

  109. And a little closer to our time in India,

  110. Mahatma Gandhi,

  111. the great revolutionary leader of India,

  112. he wrote this.

  113. He said,

  114. I like your Christ,

  115. but you Christians,

  116. I'm not so sure about you.

  117. He said,

  118. I've not been able to move beyond the belief

  119. that Jesus was one of the greatest teachers

  120. of mankind.

  121. And then even more recently,

  122. not sure if you'd call him a theologian,

  123. but John Lennon,

  124. the leader of the British pop band,

  125. The Beatles,

  126. he said,

  127. Christianity will disappear.

  128. It will vanish and shrink.

  129. I don't even need to argue about it.

  130. I'm right and I will be proved right.

  131. I am more popular than Jesus Christ.

  132. In fact,

  133. later on,

  134. John Lennon,

  135. in one of his drug-induced states,

  136. was convinced that he was Jesus Christ

  137. for a couple of days

  138. and tried to convince his band members

  139. of the same.

  140. Lots of different opinions

  141. about who was this man,

  142. Jesus of Galilee.

  143. But what did Jesus himself say?

  144. Who did he claim to be?

  145. Well,

  146. this morning,

  147. we are joining with hundreds of churches

  148. across Hong Kong,

  149. today and for the next six weeks,

  150. and we're going to be looking

  151. at these seven statements

  152. that Jesus makes in the Gospels

  153. about his identity,

  154. about who he is,

  155. and why he came to earth.

  156. And so we start in the series

  157. called I Am.

  158. Seven things that Jesus says

  159. that he is.

  160. And we start off with this

  161. pretty difficult passage today

  162. in John 8

  163. that Ellen read to us.

  164. It's quite tricky,

  165. and the passage in particular

  166. that we're going to look at

  167. comes at the end

  168. of this long dialogue,

  169. this conversation

  170. that Jesus has

  171. with a bunch of Jewish people

  172. in Jerusalem

  173. around the year 31 AD.

  174. But the passage,

  175. actually the context,

  176. starts back in chapter 7.

  177. And I'll explain

  178. something of what's going on here.

  179. Around this time,

  180. the Jewish people

  181. were gathered in Jerusalem

  182. for what was known as

  183. the Feast of the Tabernacles.

  184. It was an annual celebration.

  185. It was seven days long.

  186. Every year,

  187. in the seventh month of the year,

  188. hundreds of thousands of people

  189. would gather in Jerusalem

  190. to celebrate

  191. Israel's pilgrimage

  192. coming out of Egypt,

  193. wandering through the wilderness

  194. for 40 years,

  195. and eventually ending up

  196. in the promised land,

  197. the land of rest.

  198. And so every year,

  199. they would gather

  200. to celebrate

  201. this pilgrimage journey.

  202. And if you know

  203. the Old Testament,

  204. you'll remember

  205. that really,

  206. the nation of Israel,

  207. the people of God,

  208. are formed after the Exodus.

  209. Up until that point,

  210. Israel,

  211. or the people of God,

  212. are really the families

  213. of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  214. But after the Exodus,

  215. when they leave Egypt,

  216. they become the nation of Israel

  217. and the people of God.

  218. And you'll remember,

  219. of course,

  220. how they leave Egypt.

  221. They are slaves there.

  222. They are oppressed

  223. by Pharaoh

  224. and his armies.

  225. And one day,

  226. they're crying out to God

  227. for years and years and years,

  228. and God calls a man

  229. called Moses

  230. to be the great deliverer

  231. and the redeemer.

  232. And he calls Moses,

  233. and he says,

  234. he reveals himself to Moses

  235. at a burning bush

  236. out of the wilderness.

  237. And he tells Moses

  238. to go to Pharaoh

  239. and to tell Pharaoh

  240. that God says

  241. Pharaoh must let

  242. his people go.

  243. And Moses is not so sure

  244. about this.

  245. And Moses says,

  246. okay,

  247. but who must I say

  248. that you are?

  249. I mean,

  250. what's your name?

  251. What God are you?

  252. The problem is that

  253. the Egyptians

  254. are polytheistic.

  255. They worship all sorts of gods.

  256. There's the God of the sun

  257. and the moon and the stars.

  258. There's the God of the cattle,

  259. the God of the crops,

  260. the God of the Nile River.

  261. There are all sorts of gods.

  262. And so Moses says,

  263. if I go to Pharaoh

  264. and says,

  265. God says let his people go,

  266. he's going to say,

  267. which God?

  268. Who are you talking about?

  269. Why should I listen

  270. to that God?

  271. Who are you?

  272. What is your name?

  273. And God answers Moses

  274. with this very unusual

  275. and strange name.

  276. He gives himself

  277. the name I am.

  278. He says,

  279. tell Pharaoh,

  280. I am.

  281. He says,

  282. let my people go.

  283. I am.

  284. What does that mean?

  285. In Hebrew,

  286. you would say Yahweh.

  287. And what it means

  288. is that

  289. I am the eternally sovereign,

  290. unconstrained God.

  291. I am the God

  292. that has no limitations

  293. and no constraints.

  294. I have no beginning.

  295. I have no end.

  296. I am not just

  297. the God of Israel

  298. or the God of Egypt.

  299. I am not the God

  300. of a certain geography.

  301. I am not the God

  302. of a certain time

  303. in history.

  304. I am not just

  305. the God

  306. of a certain people.

  307. I am the eternal,

  308. uncreated,

  309. sovereign God.

  310. I am the supreme being

  311. of all beings.

  312. I am simply

  313. I am.

  314. Anything you put in there

  315. to define me

  316. is a constraint

  317. on who I am.

  318. I am simply I am.

  319. And if you know

  320. the story of the Exodus,

  321. Moses goes back

  322. to Egypt

  323. and Pharaoh

  324. doesn't want to

  325. release the Israelites

  326. and God,

  327. by many miraculous

  328. interventions,

  329. delivers His people

  330. from slavery

  331. and sets them free.

  332. And they enter

  333. into the wilderness

  334. and eventually

  335. they enter

  336. into the promised land.

  337. And while they're

  338. traveling in the wilderness

  339. for these 40 years,

  340. God miraculously

  341. provides for them

  342. again and again.

  343. When they run out

  344. of water,

  345. He provides water for them.

  346. When they run out of food,

  347. He gives them food

  348. from heaven.

  349. When they are

  350. walking through the desert

  351. and it's baking hot,

  352. there's a cloud

  353. that covers them.

  354. At night,

  355. when there's darkness

  356. all around them,

  357. He provides a light.

  358. God provides them

  359. and leads them

  360. through the wilderness

  361. until they get

  362. to the place

  363. of rest.

  364. Now,

  365. fast forward

  366. 1,500 years.

  367. It's Jerusalem.

  368. And the Jewish people

  369. have come to Jerusalem

  370. to celebrate

  371. the Feast of Tabernacles.

  372. God's kindness

  373. and God's provision.

  374. The fact that God

  375. is with His people

  376. throughout this journey

  377. from Egypt

  378. into the wilderness

  379. and into the promised land.

  380. And every year

  381. there's great excitement

  382. but this year in particular

  383. there's a buzz in the air.

  384. And there's a buzz in the air

  385. because everybody's wondering,

  386. is that man

  387. we've been hearing about,

  388. Jesus of Nazareth,

  389. is He going to be there?

  390. That's what's on everyone's lips.

  391. Is Jesus of Galilee

  392. going to arrive

  393. and be there?

  394. And they're wondering.

  395. So look at chapter 7

  396. verse 12.

  397. It says this,

  398. The Jews were looking

  399. for Him at the feast

  400. and saying,

  401. Where is He?

  402. And there was much

  403. muttering about Him

  404. among the people.

  405. While some said,

  406. He's a good man,

  407. others said,

  408. No, no,

  409. He's leading people astray.

  410. And so,

  411. there's all this anticipation.

  412. Is Jesus here?

  413. Who is He?

  414. What is He on about?

  415. Is He the Christ?

  416. Is He the Messiah?

  417. And as Jesus goes up

  418. to Jerusalem,

  419. at first He stays back,

  420. He hangs in the shadows

  421. but eventually He goes

  422. to the temple

  423. and He starts teaching

  424. and He gathers a crowd

  425. around Him.

  426. And if you look

  427. at what Jesus says,

  428. throughout this teaching,

  429. He's picking up

  430. on all the signs

  431. and all the symbols

  432. that the Jews

  433. were celebrating

  434. during the Feast of Tabernacles

  435. and He's saying,

  436. You think these are signs

  437. showing you how God

  438. was with your fathers

  439. in the wilderness?

  440. Don't you see

  441. these are all shadows?

  442. They are real signs

  443. and wonders.

  444. Point to me.

  445. Point to me.

  446. Look at what He says here.

  447. Do you remember

  448. how Israel got water

  449. in the wilderness

  450. when they left Egypt?

  451. God opened up a rock

  452. and from it sprang

  453. living water

  454. so to feed them

  455. water in the wilderness?

  456. Well, look at what Jesus

  457. says in chapter 7.

  458. If anyone thirsts,

  459. let him come to me

  460. and drink.

  461. Whoever believes in me,

  462. as the Scriptures have said,

  463. out of his heart

  464. will flow rivers

  465. of living water.

  466. Do you remember

  467. how the Israelites

  468. when they're walking

  469. through the wilderness

  470. at night time,

  471. it's dark,

  472. they don't know

  473. where to go

  474. and what does God do?

  475. He provides a light

  476. for them to shine

  477. in the darkness.

  478. Well, look at what Jesus

  479. says in chapter 8.

  480. I am the light

  481. of the world.

  482. Whoever follows me

  483. will not walk in darkness

  484. but will have

  485. the light of life.

  486. And remember

  487. the whole point

  488. of the Exodus was

  489. when God delivers people,

  490. He sets them free.

  491. They are slaves in Egypt.

  492. They are in bondage

  493. and He sets them free.

  494. Well, look at what Jesus

  495. says in chapter 8,

  496. verse 31.

  497. If you abide in my word,

  498. you are truly my disciples.

  499. You will know the truth

  500. and the truth

  501. will set you free.

  502. You see what Jesus

  503. is doing here?

  504. He's pointing to

  505. all the things

  506. that the Jews

  507. were celebrating

  508. about God's faithfulness

  509. to them in the wilderness

  510. and He's saying,

  511. if you really want to know

  512. that God has not abandoned you,

  513. that God is with you,

  514. look to me.

  515. Look to me.

  516. And that's why

  517. there's so much division

  518. going on here.

  519. Some are astounded,

  520. some are rejoicing,

  521. some are trusting

  522. that the promised Messiah

  523. has come,

  524. but to others,

  525. Jesus' words sound

  526. awfully blasphemous.

  527. It sounds like He's saying

  528. that He is God.

  529. And so,

  530. look at their response.

  531. Look at verse 48 with me

  532. and we come to the passage

  533. that Ellen read to us.

  534. Verse 48.

  535. It says,

  536. the Jews answered Him,

  537. are we not right

  538. in saying that you are

  539. a Samaritan

  540. and you have a demon?

  541. In other words,

  542. Jesus,

  543. you've lost your mind.

  544. You've completely

  545. lost the plot now.

  546. To use C.S. Lewis'

  547. famous words,

  548. they're saying,

  549. either you're a lunatic

  550. or you are a liar.

  551. Right?

  552. That's what they mean

  553. by a demon or a Samaritan.

  554. Either lunatic

  555. or you are a liar.

  556. But Jesus isn't finished

  557. revealing Himself

  558. because He wants to help them

  559. see who He really is.

  560. And so,

  561. look what He says.

  562. Jesus says four things

  563. in this passage.

  564. We'll look at them

  565. very quickly.

  566. Four things

  567. that really rile

  568. His audience.

  569. The first thing He says,

  570. He says,

  571. God the Father,

  572. the one that you know

  573. as Yahweh,

  574. He and I are totally aligned.

  575. One and the same heart.

  576. Look at how He says this twice

  577. in verse 49.

  578. He says,

  579. I do not have a demon

  580. but I honor my Father.

  581. I do not seek my own glory.

  582. There is one,

  583. the Father,

  584. who seeks it

  585. and He is the judge.

  586. Again,

  587. in verse 54,

  588. He says,

  589. if I glorify myself,

  590. my glory is nothing.

  591. It's my Father

  592. who glorifies me.

  593. The one that you say

  594. He is our God.

  595. Jesus is saying

  596. that God the Father,

  597. Yahweh,

  598. actually glorifies me,

  599. exalts me,

  600. lifts me up.

  601. If you know how

  602. jealous

  603. Jewish people were

  604. of God's glory,

  605. Jesus is saying

  606. a radical thing.

  607. Remember in Isaiah 43,

  608. God says,

  609. I am God,

  610. there is no other.

  611. I am God,

  612. I give my glory

  613. to none other.

  614. He has Jesus saying,

  615. no, no, no,

  616. that God,

  617. He actually does

  618. give His glory to me.

  619. He will glorify me.

  620. Notice the second thing

  621. Jesus says.

  622. Look at verse 51.

  623. He says,

  624. truly, truly,

  625. I say to you,

  626. if anyone keeps

  627. my word,

  628. he will never see death.

  629. Now,

  630. all Jews knew

  631. that in the Old Testament,

  632. God's word

  633. was almost equated

  634. with God Himself.

  635. In Psalm 27,

  636. it says,

  637. the word of the Lord

  638. breaks the cedars.

  639. Then the next line says,

  640. the Lord breaks the cedars.

  641. The word of the Lord

  642. sets captives free.

  643. the Lord sets captives free.

  644. In other words,

  645. God's word

  646. is so closely aligned

  647. with what God does

  648. that it's almost,

  649. almost synonymous

  650. with God.

  651. But Jews also know

  652. that God's word

  653. in the Old Testament

  654. is the one that creates life

  655. and pushes back death.

  656. Remember,

  657. that's the problem

  658. with Saul, right?

  659. In the book of 1 Samuel,

  660. he's constantly rejecting

  661. God's word

  662. and his life spirals

  663. downhill,

  664. downhill,

  665. downhill

  666. until he's one foot

  667. in the grave

  668. and he is the walking dead.

  669. Remember how Scripture

  670. says that the world

  671. was created?

  672. God spoke the world

  673. into being.

  674. That's not a technical

  675. scientific term

  676. about how old the world is

  677. or how the world

  678. came into being exactly.

  679. The point is

  680. it's saying

  681. God's word

  682. creates life.

  683. Look what Jesus says here.

  684. Jesus says the same thing.

  685. If anyone keeps my word,

  686. he will never

  687. see death.

  688. Jesus is equating himself

  689. with the God

  690. of the Old Testament.

  691. Jesus is saying

  692. that if you keep my word,

  693. if you honor it,

  694. if you respect it,

  695. if you cleave to it,

  696. if you live within it,

  697. if you surrender it,

  698. you'll be so infused

  699. with life.

  700. Life in the midst

  701. of darkness,

  702. life in the midst

  703. of hopelessness,

  704. life in the midst

  705. of this broken world.

  706. My life will come

  707. and reside within you.

  708. But look at the third thing

  709. Jesus says here

  710. in verse 56.

  711. He says,

  712. your father Abraham

  713. rejoiced at the prospect

  714. of seeing my day,

  715. of seeing me come

  716. and arrive.

  717. He was glad

  718. and he rejoiced at it.

  719. And what he means by that

  720. is when God,

  721. the father Yahweh,

  722. made a great promise

  723. to Abraham

  724. that through your descendants,

  725. one of your sons

  726. will bless the whole world,

  727. not just Israel,

  728. not just the Jews,

  729. the whole world

  730. will be blessed

  731. through the coming

  732. of one of your descendants.

  733. Abraham rejoiced

  734. at the prospect,

  735. the coming of a Messiah,

  736. a king who would bring

  737. hope to the midst

  738. of hopelessness,

  739. peace in the midst

  740. of a broken world,

  741. light in the midst

  742. of darkness,

  743. joy in the midst

  744. of pain.

  745. And he rejoiced

  746. at the prospect

  747. that a Messiah king

  748. would come.

  749. And Jesus says,

  750. he would rejoice

  751. at the coming

  752. of my day.

  753. He saw it

  754. and he was glad.

  755. Now,

  756. the people around Jesus,

  757. they hear all this

  758. and they're taking Jesus

  759. very literally.

  760. They don't really understand

  761. what he's saying.

  762. They say,

  763. hang on,

  764. hang on.

  765. Abraham died

  766. 2,000 years ago.

  767. How can you say

  768. that he saw you?

  769. How do you know

  770. when he rejoiced at?

  771. How do you know

  772. what is going on

  773. in his heart?

  774. Have you seen Abraham?

  775. You're not even

  776. 50 years old.

  777. And that leads to

  778. Jesus' fourth

  779. and final thing

  780. he says here.

  781. It's truly,

  782. truly,

  783. I say to you,

  784. before Abraham

  785. was even born,

  786. before he was even

  787. brought into existence,

  788. I am.

  789. I am.

  790. Do you see

  791. what Jesus is saying?

  792. Jesus has been

  793. building up the tension,

  794. building up the tension,

  795. giving more and more clues

  796. and more and more hints

  797. as to who he is

  798. and finally he drops

  799. this bombshell statement,

  800. the ultimate mic drop

  801. of Jesus.

  802. He takes upon himself

  803. the self-relevatory

  804. name of Jesus,

  805. the name that God gave

  806. to Moses

  807. at the burning bush,

  808. the name that,

  809. where God says,

  810. I am the eternal,

  811. sovereign,

  812. uncreated one.

  813. I am,

  814. simply I am.

  815. With no constraints,

  816. no limits,

  817. I am the supreme being

  818. of all beings.

  819. I am who I am.

  820. When the Jews finally say,

  821. who are you?

  822. When they press him,

  823. Jesus says,

  824. before even the greatest

  825. religious leaders

  826. in the world,

  827. before Abraham,

  828. Isaac and Jacob,

  829. before Moses gave you

  830. anything,

  831. I am.

  832. I existed.

  833. Before your father,

  834. Abraham,

  835. even came onto the radar,

  836. I've always been there.

  837. I am the eternal,

  838. sovereign,

  839. and created one.

  840. And of course,

  841. the response from those

  842. listening,

  843. they know exactly what he said.

  844. They know exactly what he means.

  845. And so what do they do?

  846. They pick up the stones

  847. around him

  848. to stone him to death.

  849. Jesus makes a remarkable

  850. claim here.

  851. He's not just a great teacher,

  852. not just a moral religious leader,

  853. he's not just a miracle worker,

  854. he's not just a philosopher,

  855. he's not someone who's just

  856. come to give us good advice

  857. to how to live our lives.

  858. Jesus Christ claims

  859. to be none other

  860. than Yahweh,

  861. the eternal,

  862. sovereign,

  863. and created one.

  864. Well,

  865. what does this mean

  866. for us today?

  867. That's wonderful

  868. that Jesus says this

  869. 2,000 years ago.

  870. What does it mean

  871. for us today?

  872. Well,

  873. I want us to very quickly

  874. just notice five things,

  875. mainly from this passage,

  876. that we have to come to terms with

  877. if we're going to make sense

  878. of Jesus Christ at all

  879. and his claims.

  880. And five things,

  881. we'll run through them

  882. very quickly.

  883. The data,

  884. the consistency of Jesus,

  885. the claims of Jesus,

  886. the security of Jesus,

  887. and finally,

  888. the promise of Jesus.

  889. So,

  890. firstly,

  891. let's look at the data.

  892. One of the things

  893. that we can easily do

  894. and misunderstand

  895. who Jesus is,

  896. is by simply misunderstanding

  897. the data that's available.

  898. I don't know if you noticed

  899. the first passage of Scripture

  900. that Ellen read to us

  901. this morning,

  902. back in chapter 7,

  903. it says this,

  904. it says,

  905. some people said,

  906. this is the prophet.

  907. Others said,

  908. this is the Christ.

  909. But some said,

  910. isn't,

  911. is the Christ

  912. that comes from Galilee

  913. hasn't the Scripture

  914. told us that the Christ

  915. comes from the offspring

  916. of David

  917. and therefore comes

  918. from Bethlehem?

  919. So,

  920. there's a division

  921. among the people

  922. over him.

  923. So,

  924. some people are looking

  925. at Jesus

  926. and they're astounded

  927. by his teaching,

  928. they're astounded

  929. by his words,

  930. they're astounded

  931. by the impact

  932. and the influence

  933. he's had in history

  934. and they're thinking,

  935. surely this is the Christ.

  936. But the others that say,

  937. yeah,

  938. it looks like the Christ,

  939. but there's a problem.

  940. The Scriptures have told us

  941. that the Christ

  942. must be born in Bethlehem.

  943. But we've all heard

  944. this guy comes from Galilee,

  945. so they write him off.

  946. Do you see how

  947. they write him off?

  948. They say,

  949. he can't be the Christ

  950. because they haven't

  951. done their homework.

  952. They haven't gone

  953. to the source material.

  954. If you know

  955. the Christmas story at all,

  956. you know that Jesus

  957. was born in Bethlehem,

  958. but Herod wanted

  959. to persecute him

  960. and so his family

  961. fled from Bethlehem

  962. down to Egypt

  963. and a few years later

  964. returned to Galilee

  965. and he grew up in Galilee.

  966. But here are some people

  967. that they're writing

  968. off Christ the Messiah

  969. simply because

  970. they haven't done

  971. their homework.

  972. They haven't gone

  973. to the source material.

  974. They're relying

  975. on second-hand

  976. information about him.

  977. Now friends,

  978. if you're a spiritual seeker

  979. this morning,

  980. have you made

  981. the same mistake?

  982. Maybe you find yourself

  983. interested in faith

  984. and Jesus and religion.

  985. You've read a couple of books.

  986. You've read,

  987. you know,

  988. Christopher Hitchens

  989. and Richard Dawkins.

  990. You've read Jonathan Haight

  991. or Jordan Peterson.

  992. You've read some stuff

  993. about faith and science

  994. and you think,

  995. ah, it can't be.

  996. It can't be.

  997. Friends,

  998. don't make the same mistake

  999. that these people did.

  1000. Here are some people

  1001. and they're writing off

  1002. the most influential,

  1003. the most astounding

  1004. human being

  1005. who has ever lived

  1006. because they don't go

  1007. to the source material.

  1008. They've heard

  1009. second-hand information.

  1010. Friends,

  1011. if you're not a Christian

  1012. this morning,

  1013. you've got to go

  1014. to the source material.

  1015. You've got to read

  1016. the Gospels for yourself.

  1017. You've got to go

1018. and see who does Jesus

  1019. say that he is.

1020. Find out what he says

  1021. about himself.

  1022. Don't miss Jesus

  1023. because you misunderstand

  1024. the data.

  1025. Secondly,

  1026. the consistency of Jesus.

  1027. Now,

  1028. you could say

  1029. the integrity

  1030. and not,

  1031. I don't,

  1032. by that I don't mean

  1033. the moral integrity

  1034. of Jesus.

  1035. I mean the,

  1036. the integrated wholeness

  1037. of the New Testament

  1038. and the Old Testament.

  1039. The consistency

  1040. of the claims

  1041. of who God is

1042. between the Old and New.

  1043. You know,

  1044. some people say,

  1045. I like Jesus,

  1046. I like his teachings

1047. about turning the other cheek

  1048. and forgiving your enemies

  1049. and loving those

  1050. who persecute you

  1051. and all that stuff.

  1052. But all that stuff

  1053. in the Old Testament

  1054. about God

  1055. and enemies

  1056. and people dying,

  1057. I don't know,

  1058. I don't know about that.

  1059. Surely the God

  1060. of the Old Testament

  1061. and the God

  1062. of the New Testament

  1063. are two separate gods.

  1064. I can follow

1065. the God of the New Testament

  1066. but the God

  1067. of the Old Testament,

1068. I'm not so sure about that.

  1069. Friends,

1070. you see what Jesus Christ

  1071. is saying here?

  1072. He says that

  1073. you can't make

  1074. that distinction.

  1075. Jesus doesn't allow us

  1076. to make that dichotomy.

  1077. Jesus says that

  1078. the same God

  1079. who overcame

  1080. the Egyptians

  1081. through the blood

  1082. of many lambs

  1083. is the same God

  1084. who will overcome

  1085. our great enemy

  1086. through the blood

  1087. of the Lamb,

  1088. Christ,

  1089. the one who died

  1090. on the cross.

  1091. Jesus says that

  1092. the same one,

1093. the same great I am,

  1094. the one who says,

  1095. I am who I am,

  1096. who commanded

  1097. his people

1098. to take out their enemies

  1099. so they could enter

  1100. into their rest

1101. is the same great I am

  1102. who will take out

  1103. our great enemy

1104. as he dies on the cross

  1105. and we can enter

  1106. the rest of salvation.

  1107. Friends,

  1108. Jesus says that

  1109. the same God

  1110. who demands holiness

  1111. and obedience

  1112. in the Old Testament

1113. and the one whose temple

  1114. is resplendent

  1115. with glory and holiness

1116. is the same great I am

  1117. who one day

  1118. every knee

  1119. will bow down before

  1120. when we see him

  1121. in his glory.

  1122. Jesus says that

1123. the I am of the Old Testament

1124. is the same great I am

1125. for whom we will worship

  1126. and adore in heaven.

  1127. It's the same God.

1128. It's one and the same.

  1129. The consistency of Jesus.

  1130. Jesus doesn't allow us

  1131. to dichotomize

  1132. and to place him

  1133. in a box

  1134. and say,

1135. I'll take this aspect of you

  1136. but not that.

1137. Jesus is the consistent one.

  1138. Notice thirdly here,

  1139. the claims of Jesus.

  1140. The claims of Jesus.

  1141. Now,

  1142. as we go back

1143. and look at this passage

1144. and the rest of John's Gospel,

1145. one of the things we see

1146. is that the entire narrative arc

  1147. of the whole Scripture

  1148. focuses in

1149. on the person of Jesus Christ

  1150. and his claims.

1151. Go back and look at the four things

1152. that Jesus says about himself

  1153. in this passage.

  1154. He says,

  1155. I honor my Father

1156. and my Father honors me.

1157. If anyone keeps my word,

1158. he will never taste death.

  1159. Jesus says,

1160. Abraham rejoiced at my day.

1161. He saw it and was glad.

  1162. Finally, he says,

  1163. I am the great I am.

  1164. I am Yahweh.

1165. And it's not just in this passage.

  1166. In fact,

1167. every passage in the Scriptures,

  1168. particularly in the Gospels,

1169. Jesus is going to say

1170. the same thing about himself.

  1171. He's going to say,

  1172. it's all about me.

1173. Look at Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

1174. This is a famous passage

1175. when Jesus starts out his ministry.

  1176. He says,

1177. he comes to the temple

1178. and he gets the scroll

  1179. of Isaiah the prophet

1180. and he opens it up

  1181. at Isaiah 61

  1182. and he says this,

1183. The Spirit of the Lord

  1184. is upon me

1185. because he has anointed me

1186. to proclaim good news to the poor.

  1187. He has sent me

  1188. to proclaim liberty

  1189. to the captives

  1190. and recovery of sight

  1191. to the blind.

  1192. To set at liberty

  1193. those that are oppressed

  1194. and proclaim the year

  1195. of the Lord's favor.

1196. And at the end of that,

  1197. Jesus gives the scroll

  1198. back to the attendant.

1199. He sits down and he says,

  1200. Today this Scripture

  1201. has been fulfilled

  1202. in your hearing.

  1203. Jesus says that

  1204. the whole Old Testament

  1205. is actually pointing

  1206. towards him.

  1207. He's saying that

  1208. God's word,

  1209. the Scriptures,

  1210. is not good advice

1211. about how to live your lives.

  1212. It's not good motivation.

1213. It's not just good teaching.

  1214. It's a proclamation

  1215. of good news

1216. that Jesus is the Messiah King.

  1217. Do you see that?

  1218. And this is one

  1219. of the remarkable things

  1220. about Jesus.

  1221. Jesus stands apart

  1222. from every other founder

  1223. of world religion

  1224. because he says

  1225. it's all about me.

  1226. Every other founder

  1227. of the world religion

  1228. says,

  1229. Don't look to me.

  1230. Don't worship me.

  1231. Follow my teachings.

  1232. Follow my Dharma.

  1233. Do you remember

  1234. what Gautama Buddha said

  1235. on his deathbed?

  1236. He's dying.

1237. He turns to his disciples

  1238. and he says,

  1239. Let my Dharma

  1240. and the disciplines

  1241. that I've taught you

  1242. be your teacher.

  1243. See what he's saying?

  1244. He's saying,

  1245. Don't follow me.

  1246. Don't worship me.

  1247. But follow my teachings.

  1248. Follow the disciplines

  1249. that I've taught you.

1250. Muhammad said the same thing.

  1251. He said,

  1252. Don't follow me.

  1253. Don't worship me.

  1254. Follow the words

  1255. that I give you.

  1256. But Jesus Christ

  1257. stands alone

  1258. from every founder

  1259. in the world religion

  1260. and he says,

1261. If you follow my teachings,

1262. if you follow my wisdom,

1263. if you follow my words

  1264. apart from me,

  1265. it's meaningless.

1266. You have to come to me.

  1267. Remember,

1268. Jesus says the same thing

  1269. in Matthew 11.

  1270. He says,

  1271. Come to me,

  1272. all you who laban

  1273. or heavy laden,

1274. and I will give you rest.

1275. Take my yoke upon you.

  1276. Learn from me.

  1277. I am gentle

  1278. and lowly in heart.

  1279. You will find rest

  1280. for your souls.

  1281. My yoke is easy.

  1282. My burden is light.

1283. Jesus makes this remarkable claim

1284. that you can search the scriptures

  1285. and be an expert

  1286. in religious study.

1287. You can know the scriptures backwards.

1288. You can seek to follow

  1289. everything the scriptures say,

1290. but if you do not come to him,

1291. you miss it all completely.

1292. The radical claims of Jesus.

1293. Notice fourthly what Jesus says here,

  1294. the security of Jesus.

  1295. Now,

  1296. one of the problems

  1297. that many people raise

  1298. against Christianity

  1299. is that you say,

  1300. Jesus Christ

  1301. must have been

1302. one of the most insecure,

  1303. self-centered people

  1304. to have ever lived

  1305. if he needed

  1306. all this praise

  1307. and worship.

  1308. Right?

  1309. Michael Prowse

  1310. was a columnist,

  1311. American columnist

  1312. for the Financial Times

  1313. of London.

  1314. And he turned away

  1315. from his faith

  1316. because he said,

  1317. only tyrants

  1318. puffed up with pride

  1319. crave adulation

  1320. and approval.

  1321. Right?

  1322. C.S. Lewis,

1323. before he became a Christian,

  1324. he complained

  1325. that God's demand

  1326. to be praised

  1327. and worship

1328. sounded like a vain woman

  1329. who wants compliments.

1330. The words of C.S. Lewis

  1331. in the 1940s.

  1332. But look at what

  1333. Jesus says here.

  1334. Jesus doesn't need

  1335. our praise

  1336. and our worship.

  1337. He doesn't need

  1338. anyone's glory or honor.

1339. The people of his day

  1340. are mocking him.

  1341. Soon they're going

  1342. to spit on him.

  1343. They're going to smash

  1344. a crown of thorns

  1345. into his head.

  1346. They're going to

  1347. write him off

  1348. as a lunatic,

  1349. as a renegade.

1350. They're going to crucify him.

1351. And Jesus is not perturbed.

  1352. And the reason is

  1353. because he says,

  1354. I didn't come

  1355. for people's approval.

  1356. I came to seek

1357. and to save the lost,

1358. to lay down my life

  1359. as a ransom

  1360. for many.

  1361. Jesus Christ,

1362. look what he says here

  1363. in verse 50.

  1364. He says,

  1365. I do not seek

  1366. my own glory.

1367. There's one who seeks it

1368. and he gives it to me.

  1369. He is the judge.

  1370. Verse 54.

  1371. If I glorify myself,

  1372. my glory is nothing.

  1373. It's the Father

  1374. who glorifies me.

  1375. Jesus Christ

1376. is the most secure man

  1377. who ever lived.

  1378. Do you remember

  1379. what Philippians 2 says?

  1380. It says,

1381. even though he was God,

  1382. he equated equality

  1383. with God,

1384. something not to be grasped.

  1385. Jesus had it all

1386. and he gave it all up.

  1387. He rather took on

1388. the nature of a servant,

  1389. humbled himself

1390. to the point of death,

  1391. to rescue and ransom

  1392. people like us

  1393. who need him.

  1394. Jesus Christ,

  1395. the most secure man

  1396. who ever lived

  1397. because he had

  1398. all the affirmation

  1399. within the Trinity.

  1400. He had the approval

  1401. of God himself.

1402. And so why does God

  1403. command us

  1404. to worship and adore?

  1405. I mean,

  1406. you're saying,

  1407. Jesus doesn't need

  1408. our worship, Kevin?

  1409. Okay,

1410. so why should we worship him?

1411. Why does God command us

  1412. to come before him

  1413. and to praise him,

  1414. to tell him

  1415. that he's the greatest,

1416. that there's no one like him,

  1417. that he is God

1418. and that there is no other?

1419. Why do we sing songs

  1420. and glorify his name,

1421. declare that he is God?

1422. Why do we do these things

1423. if Jesus doesn't need it?

  1424. And the answer is,

1425. not because he needs it,

1426. but because we need it.

  1427. John Calvin said

  1428. that the human heart

  1429. is an idle factory,

  1430. always creating things

  1431. to clasp

  1432. and to deify

  1433. and to worship.

  1434. Things in which

  1435. to find our significance,

  1436. our security

  1437. and our fulfillment.

  1438. Friends,

  1439. you see,

  1440. Jesus calls us

1441. to worship and adore him,

1442. not because he needs it,

1443. but because we need it,

  1444. because he's calling us

  1445. to set us free

  1446. from the false gods

  1447. that promise the world

  1448. but only enslave us.

1449. Jesus doesn't need our worship.

1450. He has all the security

  1451. and the significance

  1452. in the whole world.

1453. He has all the fulfillment

  1454. in the world.

  1455. He's God.

  1456. But he calls us

  1457. to worship him

  1458. because we need

  1459. to bring our lives

  1460. to him

1461. and to truly be set free.

  1462. And then notice,

  1463. finally and fifthly,

  1464. the last thing is,

  1465. notice the promise

  1466. of Jesus.

1467. Look again at verse 51.

  1468. Jesus gives this

  1469. remarkable promise.

  1470. He says,

  1471. Truly, truly,

  1472. I say to you,

1473. if anyone keeps my word,

1474. he will never see death.

  1475. Jesus makes a promise

1476. that all who come to him

  1477. will experience fullness

  1478. of life

  1479. and life in abundance.

  1480. Jesus is making

  1481. the statement

  1482. about his divinity.

  1483. Yes, that's true.

  1484. Jesus is equating himself

  1485. with God,

  1486. with Yahweh,

  1487. the great I am.

  1488. That's true.

  1489. But Jesus is making

1490. more than a statement here.

  1491. He's also making

  1492. a promise.

  1493. He's making a promise

1494. that those that feel hopeless

1495. can come and find hope in him.

  1496. He's making a promise

1497. that those who feel restless

  1498. can come and find

  1499. their rest in him.

  1500. He's making a promise

  1501. that those who feel

  1502. like they're grasping

  1503. in the dark,

1504. trying to make sense of life,

1505. not sure where to go

1506. and how to get through

  1507. the entanglements of life

  1508. can come to him

  1509. to find light

  1510. and to find life.

1511. And the word that Jesus

  1512. uses in the,

  1513. the word that Jesus

  1514. and John use

  1515. in his gospel,

  1516. one of the most

  1517. common words he uses

  1518. is that everlasting life,

  1519. eternal life.

  1520. Jesus came and said,

1521. I've come to give you

  1522. eternal life.

1523. And when John and Jesus

  1524. use that word,

1525. he's not just talking about

  1526. one, when we die,

  1527. we'll experience life,

  1528. although that is true.

  1529. What he's talking about

1530. is the life of heaven,

1531. the life that Adam and Eve

  1532. were meant to experience

1533. in the garden of Eden

1534. is infused into our life

1535. even now as we live.

1536. What Jesus means by that

1537. is a life fueled by hope

  1538. and courage and confidence,

  1539. a life that's free of shame

  1540. and despair and guilt,

1541. a life that is marked by peace,

  1542. the kind of life

  1543. you can only dream

  1544. and hope that heaven

  1545. will be made of.

1546. Jesus says that I will come

1547. and give that kind of life

1548. to those who follow me

  1549. and trust me.

  1550. Jesus doesn't just say

1551. that those who trust him

  1552. won't die of cancer

1553. or COVID or something else.

1554. He's saying that when death

1555. comes knocking at our door,

  1556. it'll be a transition

1557. from one form of life

  1558. into the next.

1559. Well, these are the claims

  1560. of Jesus.

  1561. And so the people

  1562. of Jesus' day,

  1563. they know that

1564. they may not have known

  1565. who Jesus was,

1566. but they knew one thing

  1567. for certain.

1568. They knew that Jesus' words

  1569. demand a response.

1570. They knew that those kind of words,

  1571. you can't remain neutral.

1572. And so what do they do?

1573. They pick up the stones

  1574. around them

1575. to stone him to death.

1576. Jesus knows that his words

  1577. don't allow you

  1578. just to give him

  1579. a simple applaud

  1580. and say,

  1581. nice sermon, teacher.

1582. Jesus' words don't allow us

1583. just to nod our head

  1584. and say,

  1585. very interesting.

  1586. Jesus says that

  1587. either you take him

  1588. as word,

  1589. you take him

1590. as what he claims to be,

  1591. and therefore you never

  1592. taste death,

1593. or along with the crowd

  1594. in today's passage,

  1595. you reject him

  1596. as a lunatic,

  1597. you reject him

  1598. as a liar,

  1599. and you reject him

1600. as someone worthy of death.

  1601. But Jesus doesn't allow

  1602. us to be neutral.

  1603. He doesn't give us

  1604. that option.

  1605. He says,

  1606. come and see me

1607. for who I really am.
