  1. Father, we give you thanks and praise that we can gather together here in the Ottawa Little Theatre to come into your presence.

  2. We give you thanks and praise, Father, that our brothers and sisters, our friends, can join in to worship through YouTube and electronic means.

  3. Father, we ask in the name of Jesus that if there is anyone present, or if there is anyone watching this right now, or who will be watching it in the days to come.

  4. Father, if there are any here who are harassed, or bound, or oppressed, or even demonized by unclean spirits, by demons.

  5. Father, not in our own power or in our own righteousness, but Father, in the name of Jesus, washed in his shed blood, made yours by adoption and grace.

  6. In the name, the strong name of our Lord Jesus, we ask, Father, for any demon that is speaking that would be silenced by you.

  7. Any demon interfering in our lives, that it would be bound by you.

  8. And that those silenced and bound demons would be taken far from this place and far from any person that the demon is harassing.

  9. That the demon would be taken to the abyss, prepared for it before its final doom.

  10. And we ask, Father, for those of us who are Christians, that you would make us more trusting of Jesus, more secure in the gospel.

  11. And if there are any here, Father, who have been harassed by demons, that you do not leave them empty, but that you bring them to a saving faith in Jesus.

  12. That they would have that true and final protection from all demonic presence and power.

  13. And we ask, Father, so that we will be in your presence, where Jesus is Lord.

  14. And that you would tune our hearts and move our hearts, that we might receive grace from you this morning and respond to you in a worthy manner.

  15. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  16. Amen. Please be seated.

  17. Some of you might be a little bit surprised by that prayer.

  18. You know, one of the problems...

  19. Actually, it's going to fit into it, because those of you who are paying attention to the reading, the demons are mentioned a lot.

  20. One of the problems is that in our world, people seem to alternate between two poles.

  21. They either act like atheists, as if all of reality is just swept of any type of angelic or demonic presence.

  22. Or we act like pagans who see spirits everywhere.

  23. And you see that reflected in Christian congregations.

  24. There's a lot of Christian churches that basically just act like they're atheists when it comes to stuff like this.

  25. And then on the other hand, you see some that act more like pagans.

  26. They see spirits everywhere.

  27. And we need to come to have some type of a godly balance about all of that type of stuff.

  28. But that's a bit of a...

  29. Anyway, there you go.

  30. That's a bit of a...

  31. I wasn't expecting to say that.

  32. I have to always be careful when I say things I wasn't expecting to say.

  33. I can get into trouble.

  34. Some of you have heard this story before.

  35. Maybe many of you have heard it before.

  36. But for many years, I was part of the Anglican Church of Canada.

  37. And I was an Orthodox pastor in the Anglican Church of Canada.

  38. And one of the things that meant was that whenever Anglican-y type things going on,

  39. or even like ecumenical or political type things going on,

  40. guys like me would never get invited.

  41. Just the way it worked used to bother me.

  42. But after a while, it didn't bother me.

  43. That was just the way it was.

  44. That people like me wouldn't get invited to speak.

  45. But occasionally, people like me would get invited to speak to some of these things.

  46. And I would observe what would happen.

  47. What would happen is that people like me would...

  48. I don't really like this analogy, but I can't think of a better one.

  49. They'd pull their punches.

  50. They'd try to act really like they were like all of the others.

  51. And not really bring out that Orthodox distinctiveness and that Gospel distinctiveness.

  52. And they'd often just talk about, you know, basically just be nice type sermon.

  53. And I know that they did it because they hoped that if they could sort of prove

  54. that they weren't knuckle-dragging mouth breathers,

  55. that maybe they'd get invited back.

  56. But what always happened is they never got invited back.

  57. Like, never.

  58. So, you know, fast forward a few years.

  59. I get invited to this thing that I'd never heard of

  60. before I get invited to the Parliament Hill Christian Fellowship.

  61. I probably got invited because of a person who's here in the room today.

  62. But I didn't really know her that well back then.

  63. And anyway, I get invited to the Parliament Hill Christian Fellowship.

  64. So I just sort of assume, I don't know,

  65. that it's going to be a liberally type of thing.

  66. And so I'm praying about what to do.

  67. I was honored.

  68. I said yes to the invitation.

  69. I thought, I'm not going to be like all of those other people who pull their punch.

  70. But what will I speak about?

  71. So I decided that if I'm going to get a chance to speak to staffers on Parliament Hill,

  72. I'm going to talk to them about the fear of God,

  73. the last judgment in the gospel.

  74. Because I'm never going to get invited back.

  75. So why should I try to do something to get invited back?

  76. I might as well give them this one shot.

  77. And you know, the fact of the matter is,

  78. I'm not picking on Parliament Hill staffers, by the way.

  79. The fact of the matter is, is that, you know, my favorite line,

  80. it came from John Maxwell.

  81. Well, people don't think they have a problem with money,

  82. but they spend money they don't have to buy things they don't need

  83. to impress people they don't like.

  84. Doesn't that describe a lot of society?

  85. Yeah, there we go.

  86. And amen.

  87. Money we don't have, buy things we don't need to impress people we don't like.

  88. Anyway, that's just, you know, we're taught, you know.

  89. But, you know, so I know on Parliament Hill, they're looking at polls,

  90. they're looking at how to vote,

  91. they're looking at, they care about what the CBC or CTV or Global News,

  92. like, they care about all of those things.

  93. And I just want to say, if you're Christians,

  94. what you need to remember is that one day you're going to appear

  95. before the judgment seat of God.

  96. And that, therefore, you need to take that into account

  97. when you make your decisions and rules.

  98. Anyway, they invited me back for, like, 20 years.

  99. I'm not saying that's a good policy,

  100. although, you know, if you do that, you'll get invited back.

  101. Most of the time, you probably won't.

  102. But, you know, if you're just going to have that one shot,

  103. like, give it to them, but as it turned out, that's what they wanted.

  104. They wanted somebody who would talk about hard type of things.

  105. And I was speaking on Parliament Hill up until the COVID thing,

  106. and I don't know if they've met again,

  107. and I'm off their speaker list, or they'll reboot.

  108. You should pray that it gets rebooted.

  109. And it's in God's hands whether I get invited to speak or not.

  110. But anyway, there you go.

  111. So all of this fits in, actually, believe it or not,

  112. both my weird prayer, my little aside about demons,

  113. and this whole thing about people in government

  114. with the text that we have before us today.

  115. In fact, it touches upon very, very profound human issues.

  116. So if you get out your Bibles,

  117. we're looking at Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  118. and we're going to begin at verse 21.

  119. I just want to continue to encourage you,

  120. whether it's here or online,

  121. we will put the words to the Scripture up on the screen,

  122. and most of the time I stick with it.

  123. But there is something about having your own Bible

  124. and being able to follow along.

  125. And, you know, in fact, it's a very, very good thing

  126. if afterwards you say,

  127. George, you didn't connect this verse to that verse or whatever,

  128. or you told me I voted.

  129. I never want to, quote, take anything out of context.

  130. So it's good to have your own Bibles,

  131. to be Bereans, where you search the Scriptures yourself

  132. to see if what I'm saying is true.

  133. That's a bit of an in-house Bible analogy.

  134. Anyway, here's the text.

  135. And they have already explained to you, though,

  136. about how that's the Jesus and four of his disciples.

  137. They went into Capernaum,

  138. and immediately on the Sabbath,

  139. he entered the synagogue and was teaching.

  140. Now, just a bit of an aside,

  141. Capernaum is going to come across a lot.

  142. Actually, this is a thing for some of, you know,

  143. two weeks in a row now,

  144. I've talked a little bit about differences in the Gospel.

  145. And this is a third way to understand

  146. some of the differences that happen in the Gospel.

  147. The thing that's interesting about Galilee

  148. is that Galilee was a mixed area.

  149. It was an area where Jewish,

  150. the majority of people were Jewish,

  151. but there was a significant non-Jewish population.

  152. And the non-Jewish population

  153. wouldn't have spoken Hebrew.

  154. They might have spoken Aramaic,

  155. but most likely they spoke Greek,

  156. which was sort of like the lingua franca of the world.

  157. And Capernaum's an important town, actually,

  158. relatively important town in those days,

  159. because on one hand, it's on the Sea of Galilee,

  160. and in those days,

  161. there's lots of fish in the Sea of Galilee.

  162. In the ancient world at that time,

  163. the main protein source for people other than beans was fish.

  164. Not meat, not goat or chicken or beef.

  165. It was fish.

  166. And there's, in fact, archaeological records

  167. to show that the fish from the Sea of Galilee

  168. were exported as far away as to Alexandria and Egypt

  169. and as far away as Damascus in Syria.

  170. And, in fact, Capernaum is on the main trade route

  171. that goes from the Mediterranean Basin up to Damascus.

  172. So this was, in a sense, on one level,

  173. it's a bit of like a backwater type of place,

  174. but it's an important regional commercial centre.

  175. And because it would have had traders going back and forward,

  176. it would be a place where you would expect

  177. many people to know many languages,

  178. not just Hebrew or just Aramaic.

  179. When you go to Montreal, for instance,

  180. most people that you would meet in Montreal

  181. speak French and English,

  182. as well as if they're new Canadians,

  183. whatever other languages from their country of origin.

  184. It's not unusual.

  185. In areas like that,

  186. where there's lots of people from many nations coming around.

  187. When I was in Namibia,

  188. I'd ask, I had to take a cab twice,

  189. once to get, both to come to,

  190. to get to and from the airport.

  191. And I'd made, I'd just ask the cab drivers,

  192. how many languages do you speak?

  193. And the first one spoke seven.

  194. The second said he spoke ten.

  195. Now, I have no idea whether they were just giving me,

  196. you know, blowing smoke at me to impress me.

  197. I didn't know any languages to test them.

  198. But they spoke lots of languages.

  199. Now, I mention this.

  200. This is a Bible difficulty thing.

  201. Because one of the things that people don't often think about

  202. is that Jesus definitely knew Aramaic and Hebrew.

  203. We know that.

  204. But because of the fact that where he was based,

  205. he probably knew Greek.

  206. And because there was a significant Roman garrison there,

  207. he also probably, he might have known Latin.

  208. And so what people often say,

  209. they'll look at a Bible thing

  210. where they seem to have three,

  211. like slightly different wording,

  212. and some people get really bent out of shape.

  213. And scholars write things that kill lots of trees

  214. to try to figure out these problems.

  215. But sometimes it could be very simple.

  216. When I had the privilege to be in Angola,

  217. on the edge of the Kalahari,

  218. I got to be able to speak,

  219. you've heard this before,

  220. I got to share,

  221. to preach to a group of semi-nomadic tribespeople

  222. who had only had the gospel come to them very recently.

  223. And when I spoke,

  224. I spoke in English,

  225. and beside me was a man who spoke Portuguese,

  226. which was the colonial language,

  227. and he would translate my words into Portuguese.

  228. And beside him was another man

  229. who also spoke not only English and Portuguese,

  230. but he spoke the tribal language.

  231. So I would say,

  232. da-da-da-da-da-da,

  233. and then you would hear,

  234. da-da-da-da-da-da in Portuguese,

  235. and then you would hear,

  236. da-da-da-da-da-da

  237. in the tribal language.

  238. And for people who were listening

  239. who spoke all three,

  240. it would be very interesting.

  241. In fact,

  242. some of the missionaries told me a little bit

  243. about how they had,

  244. you know,

  245. whether they didn't always agree necessarily

  246. with how the Portuguese guy

  247. translated me into Portuguese.

  248. But the point is,

  249. what we don't often think about

  250. is if you went back in a time machine,

  251. you might see Jesus speak in Jerusalem

  252. and say,

  253. A, B, C, D.

  254. And then he says A, B, C, D in,

  255. he says it in Hebrew,

  256. he says A, B, C, D in Aramaic,

  257. and he says A, B, C, D in Greek.

  258. And then maybe even,

  259. this is a fourth time in Latin.

  260. And people who are recording it,

  261. the wording's going to be

  262. a little bit different, right?

  263. I mean,

  264. this is just the third thing.

  265. There's lots of reasons

  266. why you should trust

  267. the historical reliability

  268. of the New Testament.

  269. But minor changes in wording,

  270. especially when they,

  271. there's lots of ways to explain it,

  272. but even something as simple as that,

  273. that Jesus could have been saying

  274. the same thing

  275. in two or three times,

  276. maybe even four times

  277. in different languages

  278. so that all of his hearers could hear,

  279. is in fact a very reasonable way

  280. to understand the dynamics

  281. of what was going on

  282. in his ministry.

  283. Anyway, that's a long aside

  284. just on Capernaum,

  285. but hopefully it helps you

  286. when you read the Bible

  287. to have confidence

  288. in the New Testament

  289. and have confidence

  290. in the Gospel.

  291. But let's get to

  292. the real existential point

  293. using a big word,

  294. existential.

  295. Verse 22,

  296. Now, this touches on what I did

  297. with the Parliament Hill

  298. Christian Fellowship.

  299. There's no real way

  300. to translate into English

  301. this word authority

  302. in the original language.

  303. In English,

  304. when we use the word authority,

  305. it's basically a completely

  306. secular idea or concept.

  307. I have authority

  308. to perform weddings

  309. in the province of Ontario.

  310. That was given to me

  311. by the state.

  312. I have a marriage license

  313. with a number.

  314. I'm registered with the state.

  315. I can do wedding ceremonies.

  316. You know,

  317. people get authority

  318. from acts of Parliament.

  319. They get from

  320. professional associations,

  321. but they're all completely

  322. and utterly secular.

  323. And that's just how

  324. we understand the word.

  325. But if we understand

  326. the word that way,

  327. we're misunderstanding

  328. the word in the original language.

  329. Because in this word,

  330. there is a very,

  331. very clear connection

  332. to the supernatural,

  333. to God,

  334. to the transcendent.

  335. It's not merely

  336. that there's some

  337. human authority.

  338. It's not,

  339. there's not saying

  340. that he has

  341. an authoritative manner,

  342. that he has a deep,

  343. booming voice,

  344. or whatever.

  345. Maybe back then

  346. they thought,

  347. hi, squeaky voices

  348. are authoritative.

  349. Like, we don't know.

  350. But it's not as if

  351. he was able to have

  352. the right type of voice,

  353. to wear the right type of dress,

  354. to look the right way,

  355. to somehow or another

  356. act authoritative.

  357. They have this sense

  358. that there's something

  359. about him

  360. which is authoritative.

  361. And for them,

  362. that word authority,

  363. and all the times

  364. you see the word authority

  365. in the New Testament,

  366. it always includes

  367. that divine,

  368. supernatural,

  369. transcendent dimension.

  370. Interestingly enough,

  371. even in our secular world,

  372. and Canada is,

  373. in some ways,

  374. a rabidly secular society.

  375. Parts of the elite culture

  376. is rabidly secular.

  377. secular.

  378. But even in our

  379. rabidly secular culture,

  380. people with authority

  381. like to try to invest

  382. themselves with

  383. something transcendent.

  384. We're not just

  385. the prime minister.

  386. I'm saving the planet

  387. from climate change.

  388. I'm not just

  389. the prime minister.

  390. I'm saving us

  391. from having horrendous

  392. COVID things.

  393. I'm not just

  394. the prime minister.

  395. I'm part of a progressive,

  396. political way.

  397. The whole culture

  398. is moving.

  399. Something bigger than me

  400. that's transcendent,

  401. that's planet big,

  402. that's history big,

  403. history transformative.

  404. And it's a regular feature

  405. of authority

  406. that they want to try

  407. to sneak in,

  408. that they're connected

  409. to something divine,

  410. something moral,

  411. something transcendent,

  412. something big.

  413. And while Canadians,

  414. and it actually sort of shows

  415. for a second,

  416. if you think about it,

  417. why is it that it's

  418. very, very hard

  419. for secular people

  420. to just purely say,

  421. well, this is just human?

  422. Like, why is that hard?

  423. Like, why is it

  424. that they don't want

  425. to just say,

  426. well, it's just that way

  427. because I decided it?

  428. No, they want to say

  429. that somehow or another

  430. that there's something more.

  431. But the ancients

  432. didn't hide around that.

  433. They directly come up

  434. with a word that says

  435. there's something supernatural.

  436. There's something of God.

  437. There's something of the heavens

  438. involved in this type

  439. of human authority.

  440. And that's the word

  441. that's going on here.

  442. They're recognizing

  443. something more than human

  444. in Jesus

  445. when they say

  446. he has authority.

  447. Now, how on earth

  448. would you ever

  449. possibly know that?

  450. And why on earth

  451. should any of you

  452. who aren't,

  453. if you're here

  454. as a seeker

  455. or a skeptic

  456. or a scoffer,

  457. if you're watching this

  458. as a seeker,

  459. a skeptic,

  460. a scoffer,

  461. you know,

  462. hopefully this isn't the case,

  463. watching to see

  464. if there's some reason

  465. you can cancel me

  466. or something like that,

  467. which has happened

  468. to some churches lately

  469. in the Ottawa area,

  470. at least one that I know of.

  471. Somebody watching

  472. their services

  473. to try to get something naughty

  474. to see if they can

  475. get them canceled.

  476. Sorry,

  477. I have to watch

  478. what I'm going to say.

  479. So why should we believe that?

  480. Just because it's in the text.

  481. Well, it's very interesting

  482. what happens in the text next.

  483. Look what happens

  484. in verse 23.

  485. And immediately

  486. there was in their synagogue

  487. a man with an unclean spirit

  488. and he cried out.

  489. Now, an unclean spirit

  490. is in Mark's gospel

  491. there's going to be

  492. two different ways

  493. they refer to demons.

  494. One is just the word demon

  495. and the other one

  496. is the word unclean spirit.

  497. And they're going to show up

  498. at different times.

  499. The devil has already showed up

  500. earlier than this

  501. and there's going to be demons.

  502. And immediately

  503. there was in their synagogue

  504. verse 23

  505. a man with an unclean spirit

  506. and he cried out

  507. this is the man

  508. who's

  509. who has an unclean spirit

  510. connected to him.

  511. Basically, he's possessed.

  512. He's demonized.

  513. And he cried out

  514. what have you to do with us

  515. Jesus of Nazareth?

  516. Notice how he says what?

  517. What have you to do with us?

  518. The man and the demon

  519. have become so intertwined

  520. that it's a plural.

  521. What have you to do with us

  522. Jesus of Nazareth?

  523. Have you come to destroy us?

  524. I know who you are

  525. the Holy One of God.

  526. But Jesus rebuked him

  527. saying be silent

  528. and come out of him.

  529. And the unclean spirit

  530. convulsing the man

  531. and crying out with a loud voice

  532. came out of the man.

  533. And they were all amazed

  534. so that they questioned

  535. among themselves

  536. saying what is this?

  537. A new teaching with authority.

  538. Remember what I said

  539. about authority.

  540. He commands

  541. even the unclean spirits

  542. and they obey him.

  543. And at once his fame

  544. spread everywhere

  545. throughout all the surrounding

  546. region of Galilee.

  547. Now, at the earlier service

  548. there's a semi-retired

  549. professor here

  550. who, or there's a person

  551. here who used to do

  552. lots of social research.

  553. So, in social research

  554. and I had a bit of a discussion

  555. with him between the services

  556. and there's various ways

  557. to talk about it

  558. but very simply put

  559. often in social research

  560. whether it's political science

  561. or psychology

  562. or sociology

  563. they know that there's

  564. things going on.

  565. There's variables

  566. about, you know,

  567. things with intelligence

  568. things with, you know,

  569. emotional investment.

  570. There's things going on

  571. in the culture

  572. and in the society

  573. and they try to measure it

  574. and the things

  575. that they're trying to measure

  576. can't be measured directly.

  577. And so what the

  578. social scientists do

  579. is they have a theory

  580. they have hypothesis

  581. they have an understanding

  582. of what's going on

  583. and what they try to do

  584. is they try to develop

  585. an indicator of the reality

  586. and the indicator

  587. is something

  588. that they can measure.

  589. So they don't say necessarily

  590. that if this is the reality

  591. and this is the indicator

  592. they don't say necessarily

  593. that the indicator

  594. is the whole thing

  595. of the reality.

  596. They're trying to get

  597. at this real thing

  598. and they can't get

  599. at this real thing

  600. because it can't be

  601. measured

  602. and they want to be

  603. social scientists.

  604. They want to be able

  605. to do path analysis

  606. and cosine analysis

  607. and they want to be able

  608. to measure it in some way

  609. and show what's going on

  610. but they come up

  611. with this way

  612. of thinking about

  613. that there's these indicators

  614. that can be measured

  615. and that if you get

  616. at the indicators

  617. you're getting at this

  618. you're taking a step

  619. at getting at this

  620. underlying reality.

  621. In an interesting way

  622. that's what's going on

  623. here in the gospel.

  624. You get an indicator

  625. so there's no way

  626. of proving

  627. whether or not

  628. Jesus has that type

  629. of supernatural authority

  630. not directly

  631. but what you can have

  632. are indicators of it

  633. and one particular

  634. indicator of it

  635. it's going to show up

  636. more than once

  637. in this series

  638. of stories

  639. that we're looking at today

  640. we'll see if I read

  641. all of them

  642. a second time

  643. but one indicator

  644. of that type

  645. of authority

  646. is whether Jesus

  647. can cast out a demon

  648. and it's very interesting

  649. of how he does it.

  650. He doesn't perform

  651. an exorcism.

  652. He doesn't do

  653. like the pagans

  654. would do

  655. in a case like that

  656. which they would

  657. try to invoke

  658. different gods.

  659. He doesn't use anything

  660. that he doesn't try

  661. to cast a different

  662. type of spell

  663. using so-called

  664. white magic

  665. against black magic.

  666. He doesn't do

  667. what a devout Jew

  668. would do

  669. which might use

  670. not only

  671. what we would call

  672. maybe liturgical things

  673. like holy water

  674. and stuff like that

  675. but that they would

  676. have a period of prayer

  677. asking God

  678. to do something.

  679. What he does

  680. is he just merely says

  681. what does he say

  682. just merely says

  683. be silent

  684. and come out of them.

  685. He doesn't appeal

  686. to a higher authority

  687. doesn't appeal

  688. to any other types

  689. of authorities.

  690. He

  691. as

  692. authority

  693. merely speaks

  694. and the demon flees.

  695. He doesn't pray

  696. he doesn't do anything

  697. he just speaks

  698. and the demon's gone.

  699. In fact actually

  700. at a level

  701. that you can't tell

  702. at from here

  703. but scholars will say

  704. that one of the things

  705. which is very interesting

  706. about all of the stories

  707. like this

  708. that take place

  709. in Mark's gospel

  710. is that if you go back

  711. to the ancient literature

  712. of the same time

  713. in the same language

  714. there's many apparent

  715. miracle type stories

  716. like this

  717. but in fact

  718. at a literary level

  719. the miracle stories

  720. that Mark writes

  721. and Luke

  722. and Matthew

  723. and John

  724. are qualitatively different

  725. than the same stories

  726. written by the pagan literature.

  727. That in fact

  728. all of the cases

  729. but Mark's a very

  730. very clear example

  731. of us

  732. they use fact language.

  733. They use dispassionate

  734. we would almost say

  735. scientific language

  736. descriptive language

  737. whereas the other type

  738. of language

  739. is couched

  740. with seems like

  741. and other types

  742. of flowery types

  743. of things

  744. that shows

  745. that the writers

  746. are trying to blur

  747. the whole realm

  748. between poetry

  749. and imagination

  750. and myth making

  751. and what actually happened

  752. but none of that

  753. is here

  754. it's a very type

  755. of factoid

  756. language

  757. which is used

  758. and so in this story

  759. which is just sort of

  760. very matter of fact

  761. Jesus just merely expresses

  762. he just merely says

  763. and this is what happens

  764. and so the implication is

  765. if Jesus can do that

  766. he is authority

  767. and so therefore

  768. these other things

  769. that he says

  770. are

  771. it's authority itself

  772. in fact not authority itself

  773. it's authority

  774. himself

  775. speaking

  776. authority

  777. himself

  778. present amongst us

  779. now

  780. let's just be very frank

  781. if this is true

  782. if it really happened

  783. the world is very different

  784. I've said this before

  785. but we can't say it enough

  786. if this actually happened

  787. the world is very different

  788. than the world

  789. presented by CBC

  790. CTV

  791. Global News

  792. the Supreme Court of Canada

  793. the Prime Minister's office

  794. the office of the official opposition

  795. and the NDP

  796. and the Green Party

  797. and the Bloc Québécois

  798. the official view

  799. of the academy

  800. if this is actually

  801. if this actually happened

  802. the world is very different

  803. than the way we're being told it is

  804. and if you think about it

  805. for a second

  806. we have all of these clues

  807. even within literature

  808. and even within those realms

  809. of discourse

  810. we have all of these clues

  811. that what they talk about

  812. isn't actually

  813. you know it's a little bit like

  814. it's a little bit like

  815. if you go to some sources

  816. that are a bit skeptical

  817. about mass mandates

  818. and stuff

  819. one of the things

  820. they love doing

  821. they love doing

  822. is taking

  823. like there's a little while ago

  824. the Democratic Caucus

  825. was about to make

  826. some announcement

  827. they didn't realize

  828. there was somebody

  829. taking a picture

  830. and they took a picture of it

  831. one minute before the announcement

  832. and the minute before the announcement

  833. none of them were wearing masks

  834. but in the official picture

  835. they're all wearing masks

  836. right

  837. like it's a bit of a sign

  838. that they don't really believe

  839. what they say about masks

  840. right

  841. just as

  842. sorry I have to stop

  843. okay

  844. just stop George

  845. by the way

  846. this is a human problem

  847. okay

  848. it's not a political problem

  849. it's a human problem

  850. we all talk one thing

  851. and do different things

  852. it's a human problem

  853. right

  854. human problem

  855. not political

  856. but what I'm saying as

  857. is that

  858. even in the world

  859. that talks about

  860. at rapidly secular

  861. that there is no higher meaning

  862. and just as I said

  863. it's hard for politicians

  864. to not want to try to add

  865. as if there's a higher meaning

  866. same it is actually with us

  867. like the fact of the matter is

  868. is that the idea

  869. that the world

  870. is completely and utterly

  871. devoid of meaning

  872. that in fact

  873. all that happens

  874. is that

  875. you know

  876. we just sort of pretend

  877. that there's some meaning

  878. because if you pretend

  879. there's some meaning

  880. then it's easier to live life

  881. that you don't really think

  882. that there's some type

  883. of a meaning

  884. which is greater than you

  885. and separate from you

  886. that there's actually

  887. what happens

  888. if you notice

  889. if you look

  890. at a very very elderly woman

  891. smiling with all their wrinkles

  892. and you think

  893. that there's something

  894. beautiful about that

  895. and something wonderful

  896. about that

  897. it's not just something

  898. you've put on her

  899. but that you're actually

  900. recognizing something

  901. that's real

  902. that if you hear

  903. a spectacularly beautiful

  904. piece of music

  905. that just deeply moves you

  906. it's not just

  907. that you've created

  908. some type of emotion

  909. to put on that

  910. but you have a sense

  911. that you're recognizing

  912. something which is real

  913. that if you see

  914. a beautiful sunset

  915. you know

  916. if you're off in the Rockies

  917. and you see a sunset

  918. you see the Rockies

  919. you see the ocean

  920. and you just

  921. your heart is just filled

  922. that there's something there

  923. which is just wonderful

  924. and if somebody says

  925. no you're just putting that

  926. on that

  927. but hard of you know

  928. that there's a clue

  929. that you're not just

  930. putting that on that

  931. you recognize something

  932. which is there

  933. which is separate from you

  934. that you say

  935. it doesn't matter

  936. if you're a Muslim

  937. a Buddhist

  938. an atheist

  939. it doesn't matter

  940. if you're gay

  941. or straight

  942. you should think

  943. that that is beautiful

  944. and so we see

  945. these clues

  946. that there is a

  947. there's a beauty

  948. that there's a

  949. a meaning

  950. that there's a

  951. a type of glory

  952. that we don't

  953. impose on the world

  954. but that we recognize

  955. on the world

  956. and that if you do that

  957. if you recognize that

  958. that there's a bit

  959. of a clue

  960. it's a clue

  961. that the Christian

  962. side of the conversation

  963. is the right side

  964. of the conversation

  965. to be on

  966. Jesus has authority

  967. if you have a sense

  968. that there must be

  969. meaning to life

  970. that there must be

  971. well if you have a sense

  972. that gosh

  973. it really is the case

  974. it must be the case

  975. it has to be the case

  976. that love is stronger

  977. and deeper

  978. and more pure

  979. and that which we should

  980. choose over hatred

  981. if you have this sense

  982. that they're not just

  983. two equal and opposed

  984. things

  985. you know

  986. you can flip a coin

  987. I'm going to choose

  988. hatred

  989. well I'm going to choose

  990. love

  991. I'm going to choose

  992. hatred

  993. I'm going to choose

  994. love

  995. but then no

  996. no no no no no

  997. you have to choose

  998. love

  999. there's something

  1000. deeper and truer

  1001. and realer

  1002. about love

  1003. than hatred

  1004. if you have this

  1005. sense that love

  1006. has to be

  1007. that life has to

  1008. be stronger

  1009. than death

  1010. that there's

  1011. something offensive

  1012. of death

  1013. that life and death

  1014. aren't equally

  1015. just merely natural

  1016. biological processes

  1017. that make no difference

  1018. except the fact

  1019. that we invest

  1020. some difference

  1021. and meaning to it

  1022. but that when we

  1023. recognize that life

  1024. has to be stronger

  1025. than death

  1026. that there's something

  1027. offensive with death

  1028. that we're not

  1029. creating that

  1030. imposing that

  1031. but we're recognizing

1032. that that is a clue

  1033. that you should be

  1034. on the Christian side

  1035. of the conversation

  1036. on this issue

  1037. though what we see

  1038. in the person

  1039. of Jesus

  1040. who has authority

  1041. which is something

  1042. of the supernatural

  1043. and what he's doing

  1044. he's revealing

  1045. what that supernatural

  1046. reality is

  1047. that he's revealing

  1048. that in fact

  1049. health is what

  1050. we were made for

  1051. not sickness

  1052. clarity of mind

  1053. and heart

  1054. not being demonized

1055. is what we were made for

  1056. that life is what

  1057. we were made for

  1058. not for death

  1059. that love is what

  1060. we were made for

  1061. not hatred

  1062. that justice is what

  1063. we were made for

  1064. not injustice

  1065. that compassion

1066. is what we were made for

  1067. not oppression

1068. and if you have a sense

1069. that those things are true

1070. then you are on the

  1071. Christian side

  1072. of the playing field

  1073. whether you recognize

  1074. it or not

  1075. in fact

  1076. you know even

  1077. you know

  1078. you know

  1079. secular scholars

  1080. mainly English

  1081. and European scholars

  1082. have been doing work

  1083. over the last

  1084. decade

  1085. to try to reveal

  1086. these are secular thinkers

  1087. coming to an understanding

1088. that a lot of the stuff

  1089. that we think

  1090. is just reason

  1091. and is just

  1092. secular reason

  1093. in fact

  1094. comes from Christianity

  1095. because you see

  1096. you think about it

  1097. for a second

  1098. here we have

  1099. authority itself

  1100. in the room

  1101. and authority

  1102. in itself

  1103. in a room

  1104. is confronted

  1105. by a demonized man

  1106. and when authority

1107. itself is in the room

  1108. confronted with

  1109. a demonized man

  1110. authority

  1111. uses

  1112. its authority

  1113. to heal

  1114. the man

  1115. and don't we all

  1116. have a sense

  1117. I mean

  1118. go back to that

  1119. mask thing

  1120. and you know

  1121. you can catch

  1122. you can catch

  1123. all the parties

  1124. do it

  1125. okay

  1126. I'm not making

  1127. any political

  1128. I really am not

  1129. making a political

  1130. point about this

  1131. I really am not

  1132. it's a human

  1133. problem

  1134. right

  1135. but where does

  1136. that inclination

  1137. and that insight

  1138. that moral insight

  1139. come from

  1140. in secular society

  1141. that people in

  1142. positions of power

  1143. and authority

  1144. that they should

  1145. use it for good

  1146. not for bad

  1147. they should act

  1148. with some type

  1149. of sympathy

  1150. for the weak

  1151. and not oppress

  1152. the weak

  1153. like where does

  1154. that insight

  1155. come from

  1156. in the Hindu

  1157. and Buddhist

  1158. mythology

  1159. there's caste

  1160. you deserve

  1161. that caste

  1162. that's why

  1163. people like

  1164. Mother Teresa

  1165. were so radical

  1166. like they deserve

  1167. that

  1168. they earned

  1169. that status

  1170. no for Christians

  1171. they don't earn

  1172. that status

  1173. human beings

  1174. have dignity

  1175. and worth

  1176. and don't you

  1177. have that sense

  1178. that authority

  1179. real authority

  1180. real power

  1181. should have some

  1182. degree of love

  1183. and compassion

  1184. in it

  1185. that that's what

  1186. it's really designed

  1187. for

  1188. you look at

  1189. atheistic states

  1190. that's not

  1191. necessarily there

  1192. it comes from

  1193. the Bible

  1194. it comes from

  1195. being formed

  1196. by stories

  1197. like this

  1198. that we have

  1199. this sense

  1200. it's not something

  1201. that emerged

  1202. just from purely

  1203. secular

  1204. like read Nietzsche

  1205. Nietzsche doesn't

  1206. say that

  1207. Nietzsche would

  1208. scoff at people

  1209. who say that

  1210. they'd just say

  1211. he'd say you're

  1212. Christians

  1213. and for him

  1214. to say that

  1215. it means you're

  1216. stupid

  1217. and so even

  1218. so much

  1219. of the secular

  1220. world

  1221. that rejects

  1222. the Christian

  1223. faith

  1224. is in fact

  1225. living off

  1226. of the fumes

  1227. the residue

  1228. of this

  1229. formation

  1230. that's come

  1231. from stories

  1232. like this

  1233. about the

  1234. proper exercise

  1235. of authority

  1236. but there's

  1237. more to this

  1238. story than that

  1239. and if I don't

  1240. get to the other

  1241. stories that's

  1242. fine

  1243. this is sort

  1244. of woven

  1245. all the way

  1246. through the rest

  1247. of them

  1248. actually you know

  1249. what a cute

  1250. thing let's

  1251. just jump ahead

  1252. this is really

  1253. really key

  1254. in terms of

  1255. how power works

  1256. and everything

  1257. like that

  1258. because that's

  1259. one of the

  1260. things which is

  1261. so important

  1262. to this story

  1263. just keep

  1264. reading

  1265. verse 29

  1266. and immediately

  1267. he left the

  1268. synagogue

  1269. and entered

  1270. the house

  1271. of Simon

  1272. and Andrew

  1273. with James

  1274. and John

  1275. now verse 30

  1276. Simon's mother-in-law

1277. lay ill with a fever

  1278. and immediately

  1279. they told him

  1280. about her

  1281. and he came

  1282. and took her

  1283. by the hand

  1284. and lifted her

  1285. up and the fever

  1286. left her

  1287. and she began

  1288. to serve him

  1289. notice that

  1290. he doesn't pray

  1291. he doesn't give her

  1292. medicine

  1293. he just takes her

  1294. hand and she's

  1295. healed

  1296. who's Jesus

  1297. it's been revealed

  1298. that he's not

  1299. like what is

  1300. this supernatural

  1301. authority

  1302. what is this

  1303. divine authority

  1304. the divine authority

  1305. is the one

  1306. that frees you

  1307. from the demonic

  1308. what is the

  1309. divine authority

  1310. divine authority

  1311. is properly

  1312. to restore

  1313. human beings

  1314. to a proper

  1315. freedom and

  1316. control of their

  1317. faculties

  1318. it's to deliver

  1319. you from

  1320. sickness

  1321. that you may

  1322. be whole

  1323. but look

  1324. it gets really

  1325. cool

  1326. it's something

  1327. it's only in

  1328. the original

  1329. language

  1330. you can't see

  1331. it in the

  1332. English

  1333. that evening

  1334. at sundown

  1335. they brought

  1336. to him

  1337. all who

  1338. were sick

  1339. or oppressed

  1340. by demons

  1341. and the whole

  1342. city

  1343. was gathered

  1344. together

  1345. at the door

  1346. and he healed

  1347. the many

  1348. okay

  1349. in a literally

  1350. way

  1351. and he healed

  1352. the many

  1353. who were sick

  1354. with various

  1355. diseases

  1356. and cast out

  1357. many demons

  1358. and he would

  1359. not permit

  1360. the demons

  1361. to speak

  1362. because they

  1363. knew him

  1364. but that verse

  1365. 34

  1366. and he healed

  1367. the many

  1368. in the original

  1369. language

  1370. you know

  1371. what that word

  1372. is

  1373. some of you

  1374. don't know

  1375. this word

  1376. because it's

  1377. but it's

  1378. hoi polloi

  1379. you know

  1380. how in elite

  1381. circles

  1382. it'll talk about

  1383. the hoi polloi

  1384. are people

  1385. who work

  1386. at Tim Hortons

  1387. it's

  1388. the

  1389. working

  1390. it's the

  1391. it's the common

  1392. people

  1393. who don't

  1394. really know

  1395. or understand

  1396. anything

  1397. and who does

  1398. Jesus heal

  1399. the hoi polloi

  1400. the many

  1401. but you see

  1402. here's

  1403. here's

  1404. a couple

  1405. of things

  1406. which are so

  1407. important

  1408. about this

  1409. particular story

  1410. you see

  1411. what is it

  1412. that's being

  1413. revealed

  1414. in this

  1415. type of

  1416. story

  1417. and the

  1418. story

  1419. is shaping

  1420. us to

  1421. understand

  1422. that

  1423. true

  1424. authority

  1425. real

  1426. authority

  1427. authority

  1428. which is

  1429. connected

  1430. to the

  1431. divine

  1432. should be

  1433. an authority

  1434. which works

  1435. for healing

  1436. for freedom

  1437. for deliverance

  1438. for justice

  1439. that that's

  1440. in fact

  1441. what real

  1442. authority

  1443. that's what

  1444. God is

  1445. ultimately

  1446. really like

  1447. and it's

  1448. even

  1449. it's

  1450. shown in

  1451. the fact

  1452. that

  1453. that

  1454. the beginning

  1455. of the

  1456. whole thing

  1457. it says

  1458. remember

  1459. that all

  1460. of the

  1461. gospel of

  1462. Mark

  1463. can be

  1464. understood

  1465. as the

  1466. time is

  1467. fulfilled

  1468. the kingdom

  1469. of God

  1470. is at

  1471. hand

  1472. repent

  1473. and believe

  1474. the gospel

  1475. and so

  1476. that actually

  1477. there's a

  1478. riddle

  1479. in there

  1480. like what

  1481. is the

  1482. kingdom

  1483. who is

  1484. the kingdom

  1485. how do

  1486. you get

  1487. in

  1488. and what

  1489. this entire

  1490. story

  1491. from these

  1492. texts

  1493. on

  1494. in terms

  1495. of how

  1496. Jesus

  1497. deals

  1498. with the

  1499. sick

  1500. how he

  1501. deals

  1502. with the

  1503. hoi

  1504. polloi

  1505. how he

  1506. deals

  1507. with the

  1508. demonized

  1509. I'm not

  1510. going to

  1511. maybe have

  1512. time to

  1513. look at

  1514. it

  1515. but how

  1516. does he

  1517. deal

  1518. with the

  1519. leper

  1520. the

  1521. social

  1522. outcast

  1523. how does

  1524. he deal

  1525. with them

  1526. the kings

  1527. of the

  1528. earth

  1529. send people

  1530. out to

  1531. die

  1532. so they

  1533. will receive

  1534. glory

  1535. but what

  1536. we see

  1537. here is

  1538. that Jesus

  1539. loves

  1540. people

  1541. and dies

  1542. for people

  1543. for their

  1544. glory

  1545. it's a

  1546. complete

  1547. reversal

  1548. of the

  1549. general

  1550. pagan

  1551. and religious

  1552. understanding

  1553. of how

  1554. authority

  1555. is to

  1556. work

  1557. you see

  1558. the fact

  1559. is

  1560. that when

  1561. Jesus

  1562. says

  1563. the time

  1564. is fulfilled

  1565. the kingdom

  1566. of God

  1567. is at

  1568. hand

  1569. repent

  1570. and believe

  1571. the gospel

  1572. there are

  1573. in a sense

  1574. on one

  1575. level

  1576. there's

  1577. nobody

  1578. in that

  1579. kingdom

  1580. right now

  1581. on one

  1582. level

  1583. you don't

  1584. want to

  1585. get into

  1586. old

  1587. testament

  1588. saints

  1589. and all

  1590. that

  1591. but on

  1592. one

  1593. level

  1594. the new

  1595. kingdom

  1596. hasn't been

  1597. inaugurated

  1598. yet

  1599. it's not

  1600. inaugurated

  1601. until he

  1602. dies

  1603. upon the

  1604. cross

  1605. and rises

  1606. from the

  1607. dead

  1608. and in

  1609. the kingdoms

  1610. of the

  1611. world

  1612. the king

  1613. sends

  1614. soldiers

  1615. out to

  1616. die

  1617. for their

  1618. glory

  1619. in

  1620. Jesus'

  1621. case

  1622. he will

  1623. die

  1624. for people

  1625. so that

  1626. they will

  1627. be free

  1628. and be

  1629. part of

  1630. his

  1631. kingdom

  1632. he dies

  1633. to create

  1634. citizens

  1635. who are

  1636. freed up

  1637. by his

  1638. grace

  1639. to be

  1640. part of

  1641. his

  1642. kingdom

  1643. we also

  1644. see something

  1645. else which

  1646. is really

  1647. important in

  1648. this particular

  1649. story

  1650. one of the

  1651. things that

  1652. Mark does

  1653. at a

  1654. literary

  1655. level

  1656. which is

  1657. very

  1658. interesting

  1659. in the

  1660. first

  1661. couple

  1662. of

  1663. chapters

  1664. and he

  1665. does it

  1666. in different

  1667. places

  1668. he doesn't

  1669. only do it

  1670. but people

  1671. will ask

  1672. a question

  1673. where does

  1674. his authority

  1675. come from

  1676. how can

  1677. he do

  1678. something

  1679. like that

  1680. and the

  1681. answer is

  1682. given by

  1683. the

  1684. demons

  1685. you think

  1686. about this

  1687. particular

  1688. story

  1689. you know

  1690. they're

  1691. astonished

  1692. at his

  1693. authority

  1694. and at

  1695. the end

  1696. they're

  1697. astonished

  1698. that he

  1699. could do

  1700. it

  1701. but the

  1702. answer is

  1703. given by

  1704. the demon

  1705. that he's

  1706. the holy

  1707. one of

  1708. God

  1709. now this

  1710. is profoundly

  1711. important for

  1712. us as

  1713. Christians

  1714. and for

  1715. those who

  1716. are outside

  1717. the Christian

  1718. faith

  1719. who might

  1720. be considering

  1721. becoming a

  1722. Christian

  1723. there's a

  1724. world

  1725. a universe

  1726. of difference

  1727. between saying

  1728. Jesus is

  1729. God

  1730. or saying

  1731. Jesus is a

  1732. savior

  1733. and saying

  1734. Jesus is

  1735. my savior

  1736. there is a

  1737. universe of

  1738. difference

  1739. it is as

  1740. different as

  1741. the east is

  1742. from the west

  1743. the north is

  1744. from the south

  1745. to say

  1746. that Jesus

  1747. is a savior

  1748. and say

  1749. that he is

  1750. my savior

  1751. that Jesus

  1752. is an

  1753. authority

  1754. and saying

  1755. he is

  1756. my

  1757. authority

  1758. see the

  1759. demons

  1760. can say

  1761. the first

  1762. but they're

  1763. still doomed

  1764. if you read

  1765. the book of

  1766. revelation

  1767. they will

  1768. eventually

  1769. be cast

  1770. into the

  1771. lake of

  1772. fire

  1773. for a

  1774. final

  1775. annihilation

  1776. but God

  1777. desires so

  1778. much more

  1779. for you

  1780. and me

  1781. the bad

  1782. things in

  1783. our lives

  1784. are not

  1785. the final

  1786. word that

  1787. God wants

  1788. to have

  1789. about you

  1790. and me

  1791. the times

  1792. in our

  1793. lives that

  1794. we have

  1795. been demonized

  1796. is not

  1797. the final

  1798. word that

  1799. the Lord

  1800. wants to

  1801. have about

  1802. you and

  1803. me

  1804. the ways

  1805. that we

  1806. are unclean

  1807. the ways

  1808. that we

  1809. are like

  1810. a leper

  1811. the ways

  1812. that we

  1813. are sick

  1814. the ways

  1815. that we

  1816. are ostracized

  1817. the ways

  1818. that we

  1819. are broken

  1820. the ways

  1821. that we

  1822. are shamed

  1823. the ways

  1824. that we

  1825. are belittled

  1826. are not

  1827. the final

  1828. word that

  1829. the Lord

  1830. wants to

  1831. have about

  1832. you and

  1833. me

  1834. see he

  1835. wants us

  1836. to sow

  1837. and look

  1838. and say

  1839. here is the

  1840. man who

  1841. will touch

  1842. a leper

  1843. here is a

  1844. man who

  1845. will address

  1846. the demonized

  1847. here is a

  1848. man who

  1849. identifies with

  1850. sinners

  1851. here is a

  1852. man who

  1853. knows all

  1854. of this

  1855. does not

  1856. have to

  1857. die

  1858. you come

  1859. to the

  1860. conclusion

  1861. as you

  1862. read through

  1863. the gospel

  1864. of Mark

  1865. that that

  1866. old Christian

  1867. saying is

  1868. that it

  1869. wasn't the

  1870. nails that

  1871. held Jesus

  1872. to the cross

  1873. but his

  1874. love for

  1875. you and

  1876. me that

  1877. held him

  1878. to the

  1879. cross

  1880. Jesus could

  1881. cast out

  1882. a demon

  1883. how on earth

  1884. could he ever

  1885. be hung to

  1886. a cross

  1887. we're going

  1888. to see him

  1889. fill the storm

  1890. and feed

  1891. the 5000

  1892. he could

  1893. only do

  1894. that if

  1895. when he

  1896. dies upon

  1897. the cross

  1898. he's dying

  1899. out of love

  1900. for you

  1901. and me

  1902. he does

  1903. it willingly

  1904. he is not

  1905. a king

  1906. who sends

  1907. his pawns

  1908. out so

  1909. that he

  1910. will triumph

  1911. and live

  1912. he is the

  1913. king who

  1914. comes amongst

  1915. his pawns

  1916. and dies

  1917. for the

  1918. pawns

  1919. that the

  1920. pawns

  1921. might become

  1922. kings

  1923. and queens

  1924. now some

  1925. of our

  1926. response

  1927. just as

  1928. we close

  1929. is that

  1930. I remember

  1931. many years

  1932. ago talking

  1933. to a person

  1934. who was

  1935. struggling

  1936. with alcoholism

  1937. and he

  1938. came to

  1939. the realization

  1940. that he

  1941. was probably

  1942. an alcoholic

  1943. and had to

  1944. do something

  1945. about him

  1946. and one

  1947. of the

  1948. things he

  1949. said to

  1950. me is he

  1951. said George

  1952. if I stop

  1953. being an

  1954. alcoholic

  1955. my life

  1956. will be

  1957. ruined

  1958. I don't

  1959. have a

  1960. single

  1961. friend who's

  1962. not an

  1963. alcoholic

  1964. I'll have

  1965. nothing to

  1966. do any

  1967. night

  1968. I'll have

  1969. nothing to

  1970. do on

  1971. the weekend

  1972. I won't

  1973. have any

  1974. friends

  1975. see one of

  1976. the things

  1977. which is so

  1978. interesting is

  1979. we hear about

  1980. this and

  1981. instantly there's

  1982. part of us

  1983. who says no

  1984. no no

  1985. if Jesus

  1986. comes into

  1987. my life

  1988. even though

  1989. he died

  1990. for me

  1991. if he

  1992. comes into

  1993. my life

  1994. see one

  1995. of the

  1996. things which

  1997. is the

  1998. final thing

  1999. which is so

  2000. remarkable

  2001. about that

  2002. story is

  2003. that when

  2004. the demonized

  2005. man says

  2006. what have you

  2007. to do with

  2008. us

  2009. Jesus

  2010. Nazareth

  2011. have you

  2012. come to

  2013. destroy

  2014. us

  2015. the demonized

  2016. man is

  2017. expressing how

  2018. every person

  2019. is in regard

  2020. to key sins

  2021. in their

  2022. lives

  2023. the person

  2024. who's completely

  2025. and utterly

  2026. consumed

  2027. without recognizing

  2028. that they're

  2029. consumed with

  2030. money

  2031. the person

  2032. who's completely

  2033. and utterly

  2034. consumed

  2035. without realizing

  2036. that they're

  2037. consumed

  2038. with power

  2039. or with

  2040. their appearance

  2041. or with

  2042. having

  2043. sex

  2044. or with

  2045. envy

  2046. or just

  2047. with food

  2048. or like

  2049. with whatever

  2050. it is

  2051. and it can

  2052. be more

  2053. than one

  2054. thing

  2055. there is

  2056. this sense

  2057. that if

  2058. Jesus

  2059. comes into

  2060. your life

  2061. he's going

  2062. to destroy

  2063. us

  2064. because I've

  2065. become so

  2066. consumed

  2067. and so

  2068. identified

  2069. with my

  2070. search for

  2071. money

  2072. even though

  2073. my search

  2074. for money

  2075. is messing

  2076. up my

  2077. life

  2078. like if

  2079. you become

  2080. consumed

  2081. with making

  2082. money

  2083. you will

  2084. actually

  2085. rarely

  2086. be happy

  2087. because

  2088. you're

  2089. going to

  2090. be worried

  2091. about

  2092. every

  2093. downturn

  2094. in the

  2095. stock

  2096. market

  2097. you're

  2098. going

  2099. to be

  2100. worried

  2101. about

  2102. the

  2103. people

  2104. who have

  2105. more

  2106. money

  2107. than

  2108. you

  2109. you're

  2110. going

  2111. to feel

  2112. insecure

  2113. I remember

  2114. the man

  2115. who was

  2116. very

  2117. wealthy

  2118. he was

  2119. worth

  2120. a lot

  2121. of

  2122. millions

  2123. of

  2124. dollars

  2125. and he

  2126. said

  2127. he didn't

  2128. know

  2129. if he

  2130. had

  2131. enough

  2132. money

  2133. yet

  2134. to

  2135. retire

  2136. he said

  2137. I can't

  2138. figure out

  2139. when I have

  2140. enough

  2141. money

  2142. money

  2143. and I

  2144. thought

  2145. to myself

  2146. you have

  2147. like a

  2148. hundred

  2149. times

  2150. more

  2151. a thousand

  2152. times

  2153. more

  2154. money

  2155. if I

  2156. had

  2157. your

  2158. money

  2159. I'd

  2160. but you

  2161. see

  2162. when money

  2163. comes to

  2164. take upon

  2165. you

  2166. your

  2167. identity

  2168. is

  2169. insecure

  2170. and you

  2171. don't

  2172. realize

  2173. that your

  2174. identity

  2175. is being

  2176. formed

  2177. by gripping

  2178. onto this

  2179. type of

  2180. thing

  2181. and so

  2182. it is

  2183. when Jesus

  2184. says

  2185. if I

  2186. come to

  2187. you

  2188. I will

  2189. come to

  2190. save

  2191. you

  2192. I will

  2193. come to

  2194. free

  2195. you

  2196. and part

  2197. of you

  2198. says

  2199. no

  2200. no

  2201. I might

  2202. have

  2203. to give

  2204. some

  2205. of that

  2206. money

  2207. away

  2208. I might

  2209. have

  2210. to

  2211. tithe

  2212. I'm

  2213. going to

  2214. have

  2215. to give

  2216. to the

  2217. poor

  2218. and so

  2219. we say

  2220. to Jesus

  2221. if you

  2222. come to

  2223. destroy

  2224. us

  2225. if you

  2226. come to

  2227. destroy

  2228. us

  2229. see

  2230. the

  2231. demonized

  2232. man

  2233. is

  2234. expressing

  2235. how we

  2236. relate

  2237. to sin

  2238. to our

  2239. pride

  2240. our autonomy

  2241. our ability

  2242. to control

  2243. ourselves

  2244. even though

  2245. all these

  2246. things

  2247. just make

  2248. us

  2249. more

  2250. and more

  2251. fragile

  2252. not

  2253. anti-fragile

  2254. but fragile

  2255. more

  2256. and more

  2257. dependent

  2258. upon

  2259. what other

  2260. people

  2261. think

  2262. about

  2263. us

  2264. more

  2265. independent

  2266. about

  2267. having

  2268. the

  2269. money

  2270. having

  2271. the

  2272. car

  2273. having

  2274. the

  2275. clothes

  2276. having

  2277. the

  2278. sex

  2279. having

  2280. the

  2281. relationships

  2282. having

  2283. the

  2284. profile

  2285. having

  2286. the

  2287. reputation

  2288. having

  2289. the

  2290. position

  2291. all

  2292. of

  2293. these

  2294. things

  2295. and

  2296. they

  2297. just

  2298. make

  2299. us

  2300. at a

  2301. fundamental

  2302. level

  2303. anxious

  2304. and

  2305. insecure

  2306. and so

  2307. we

  2308. say

  2309. to

  2310. Jesus

  2311. yes

  2312. I

  2313. know

  2314. that

  2315. you

  2316. come

  2317. and you

  2318. will

  2319. make

  2320. the

  2321. leper

  2322. clean

  2323. I

  2324. know

  2325. that

  2326. you

  2327. come

  2328. and you

  2329. will

  2330. make

  2331. the

  2332. sick

  2333. whole

  2334. I

  2335. know

  2336. that

  2337. you

  2338. come

  2339. and you

  2340. will

  2341. take

  2342. the

  2343. demon

  2344. eyes

  2345. free

  2346. but I

  2347. think

  2348. you're

  2349. coming

  2350. to

  2351. destroy

  2352. me

  2353. and all

  2354. I can

  2355. say to

  2356. you

  2357. is look

  2358. at what

  2359. the

  2360. Bible

  2361. says

  2362. he

  2363. really

  2364. does

  2365. come

  2366. to

  2367. free

  2368. you

  2369. he

  2370. really

  2371. does

  2372. come

  2373. to

  2374. free

  2375. you

  2376. he

  2377. really

  2378. comes

  2379. to bring

  2380. to open

  2381. your eyes

  2382. to the

  2383. meaning

  2384. of life

  2385. to the

  2386. beauty

  2387. of life

  2388. to the

  2389. goodness

  2390. of life

  2391. to choosing

  2392. generosity

  2393. over greed

  2394. choosing

  2395. forgiveness

  2396. over

  2397. recrimination

  2398. choosing

  2399. love

  2400. over

  2401. hatred

  2402. choosing

  2403. freedom

  2404. over

  2405. being

  2406. bound

  2407. he

  2408. has

  2409. died

  2410. for you

  2411. to know

  2412. that freedom

  2413. to know

  2414. him

  2415. who is

  2416. authoritative

  2417. freedom

  2418. please

  2419. stand

  2420. for those

  2421. of us

  2422. who are

  2423. Christians

  2424. one of the

  2425. things

  2426. every

  2427. Sunday

  2428. is

  2429. to

  2430. recommit

  2431. to

  2432. him

  2433. not

  2434. to

  2435. become

  2436. saved

  2437. again

  2438. to

  2439. recommit

  2440. to

  2441. him

  2442. and

  2443. say

  2444. Jesus

  2445. you

  2446. are

  2447. my

  2448. savior

  2449. Jesus

  2450. you

  2451. are

  2452. my

  2453. lord

  2454. yes

  2455. Jesus

  2456. it's

  2457. worth

  2458. it

  2459. to

  2460. choose

  2461. generosity

  2462. over

  2463. greed

  2464. it's

  2465. worth

  2466. it

  2467. to

  2468. choose

  2469. forgiveness

  2470. it's

  2471. worth

  2472. it

  2473. to

  2474. choose

  2475. love

  2476. it's

  2477. worth

  2478. it

  2479. to

  2480. choose

  2481. life

  2482. I

  2483. recommit

  2484. and

  2485. every

  2486. Sunday

  2487. when we

  2488. gather

  2489. for those

  2490. who have

  2491. not yet

  2492. given

  2493. your

  2494. life

  2495. to

  2496. Jesus

  2497. there's

  2498. no

  2499. I

  2500. worry

  2501. that

  2502. you'll

  2503. destroy

  2504. me

  2505. but

  2506. I

  2507. trust

  2508. what

  2509. I

  2510. just

  2511. saw

  2512. in

  2513. your

  2514. word

  2515. that

  2516. you

  2517. will

  2518. subvert

  2519. those

  2520. sinful

  2521. power

  2522. dynamics

  2523. and

  2524. idolatrous

  2525. things

  2526. in

  2527. my

  2528. life

  2529. you'll

  2530. subvert

  2531. those

  2532. but

  2533. I

  2534. trust

  2535. you

  2536. Jesus

  2537. that

  2538. you

  2539. will

  2540. subvert

  2541. and

  2542. deconstruct

  2543. those

  2544. but

  2545. fulfill

  2546. actually

  2547. the

  2548. real

  2549. deeper

  2550. longing

  2551. of

  2552. my

  2553. heart

  2554. because

  2555. in

  2556. the

  2557. depth

  2558. of

  2559. my

  2560. heart

  2561. I

  2562. know

  2563. that

  2564. I'd

  2565. rather

  2566. on

  2567. my

  2568. death

  2569. bed

  2570. than a

  2571. greedy

  2572. person

  2573. a

  2574. forgiving

  2575. person

  2576. than

  2577. one

  2578. who

  2579. never

  2580. forgives

  2581. a

  2582. loving

  2583. person

  2584. rather

  2585. than

  2586. one

  2587. who

  2588. hates

  2589. one

  2590. who

  2591. shows

  2592. compassion

  2593. for

  2594. every

  2595. race

  2596. rather

  2597. than

  2598. a

  2599. racist

  2600. that

  2601. is

  2602. really

  2603. the

  2604. deepest

  2605. longing

  2606. in

  2607. my

  2608. heart

  2609. and

  2610. all

  2611. I

  2612. can

  2613. say

  2614. to

  2615. you

  2616. is

  2617. to

  2618. silence

  2619. the

  2620. demonized

  2621. aspects

  2622. in

  2623. your

  2624. sin

  2625. and

  2626. there's

  2627. no

  2628. better

  2629. time

  2630. than

  2631. right

  2632. now

  2633. to

  2634. say

  2635. Jesus

  2636. please

  2637. be

  2638. my

  2639. savior

  2640. and

  2641. Lord

  2642. and

  2643. trust

  2644. that

  2645. you

  2646. will

  2647. free

  2648. me

  2649. and

  2650. heal

  2651. me

  2652. that's

  2653. the

  2654. path

  2655. you

  2656. will

  2657. put

  2658. me

  2659. on

  2660. let's

  2661. bow

  2662. our heads

  2663. in

  2664. prayer

  2665. father

  2666. we

  2667. thank you

  2668. for

  2669. Jesus

  2670. we

  2671. thank you

  2672. that

  2673. he

  2674. is

  2675. the

  2676. king

  2677. who

  2678. died

  2679. for

  2680. the

  2681. pawns

  2682. so

  2683. the

  2684. pawns

  2685. can

  2686. be

  2687. kings

  2688. and

  2689. queens

  2690. under

  2691. him

  2692. we

  2693. thank

  2694. you

  2695. father

  2696. that

  2697. you

  2698. are

  2699. on

  2700. the

  2701. side

  2702. of
