  1. Lord, we ask that you would bless us as we hear your word,

  2. that you would renew our minds, and you'll renew our hearts,

  3. you'll renew our souls, that you'll meet us where we need it.

  4. Lord, we thank you that these words are ancient,

  5. and yet they are for us this very moment today.

  6. We pray all these things in Christ's name. Amen.

  7. Please be seated.

  8. We've been going through the Gospel of Mark.

  9. In fact, we're going to be going through the Gospel of Mark for some time,

  10. and it really is, when you go through a whole narrative like this,

  11. rather than just maybe a one-off sermon, you start to see patterns.

  12. You start to see the intention of Mark, certain things that he is doing.

  13. And one of the things that he is doing is that he is leading us to the cross.

  14. We start to see bits of who this Messiah is and what he has come to do.

  15. Before we get into it, I'm going to just share a bit of a story.

  16. Years ago, I was really offended by a family member in a big way.

  17. It was a very rude thing that was said.

  18. And I lost my cool.

  19. It was over the phone.

  20. And I was 20 at the time.

  21. And my anger came out in a physical way, and I smashed the phone.

  22. I was so angry.

  23. I've never seen red in my life.

  24. I saw red.

  25. I was bent.

  26. I was bent with anger.

  27. Anyways, didn't talk to this family member for months.

  28. It wasn't the first time I've had an issue with this family member.

  29. And anyways, it's summertime, and I'm at a summer camp.

  30. And if you're at a Christian summer camp ever, it's like spirituality is like it's ramped up to like a 10 or 11.

  31. Like you are on a high with Jesus, especially if you're 20.

  32. And I just thought, man, you know what?

  33. I've forgiven.

  34. I've forgiven this family member.

  35. I've got to phone them up.

  36. I phoned up the family member.

  37. It was six months, almost to the day.

  38. And small talk, small talk, small talk.

  39. And I said, you know, by the way, what you said in January, I forgive you.

  40. He said, forgive me for what?

  41. Oh, man.

  42. I thought I forgave.

  43. And within a moment, the red came.

  44. I was in the car.

  45. I didn't smash it or like drive it into the ditch.

  46. Like it wasn't quite at that level.

  47. But I realized then, and it's stuck with me ever since, forgiveness is something we need.

  48. We also need to give desperately.

  49. But it is darn hard to give it.

  50. And it's hard to receive it.

  51. We're going to learn a bit about forgiveness today.

  52. How Jesus approaches it.

  53. We're going to see that forgiveness is actually at the center of the cross.

  54. And as Mark is leading us, setting these kind of breadcrumbs, so to speak, leading us to the cross,

  55. we're going to see that forgiveness is something that is greater than we could have ever hoped for.

  56. It is beyond the pale, the forgiveness of God.

  57. It's, and I use this, it is scandalous.

  58. It is a scandalous thing.

  59. Jesus is proclaiming the gospel of God, the good news that he will destroy death and forgive sins forever by dying on the cross.

  60. This is what we see right from the opening verses of the gospel,

  61. that Jesus is the gospel himself, his life, his death, his resurrection.

  62. And that an implication of the gospel is the kingdom of heaven breaking into the kingdom of earth.

  63. And all of a sudden we get to see little flavors, little bits of flavors of the kingdom.

  64. That restoration and healing start to take place wherever Jesus goes.

  65. Cleansing and joy starts to take place wherever Jesus goes.

  66. We learned about the cleansing of the leper last week.

  67. The kingdom of God is breaking into the kingdom of earth.

  68. We'll see how Jesus this week has the authority and the ability to forgive sins.

  69. Not in the Daniel style of forgiving sins.

  70. The 20-year-old Daniel style of forgiving sins.

  71. Or maybe the 35-year-old Daniel forgiving sins.

  72. Or your version of forgiving sins.

  73. But true forgiveness of sins.

  74. And we'll see this play out as Jesus interacts with a paralytic,

  75. interacts with a traitor,

  76. and how it kind of plays out at a dinner party.

  77. So let's take a first look at the paralytic.

  78. This is a very, very, very famous passage of scripture.

  79. The lowering of the paralytic through the roof.

  80. Let's take a read.

  81. This is chapter 2 of Mark, starting in...

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  82. Why don't we start in verse 2?

  83. And many were gathered together,

  84. so that there was no more room, not even at the door.

  85. And Jesus was preaching the word to them.

  86. Notice, Jesus is preaching.

  87. Five times I've counted, since chapter 1,

  88. Jesus is either preaching, teaching, or proclaiming.

  89. And in all cases, what's implied is that

  90. he is preaching, teaching, and proclaiming the gospel.

  91. The good news of God.

  92. And this is no different.

  93. He is preaching the gospel.

  94. And people are eager to hear.

  95. I have a suspicion, though,

  96. and we'll see that people are actually eager just to see a miracle happen.

  97. Jesus has already done a few of them.

  98. Anyways, the crowd is pressing in against Jesus.

  99. Verse 3.

  100. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.

  101. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd,

  102. they removed the roof above.

  103. And when they had made an opening,

  104. they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.

  105. So this house, it would not have been a big house.

  106. There's no room.

  107. It wouldn't have been an uncommon thing to remove a part of the roof.

  108. It's pitch.

  109. It's wood.

  110. You remove it.

  111. It's, I mean, seasonally, they'd have to repair the roofs anyways.

  112. So it's not like for us.

  113. It's like, oh, yeah, he tore up on my roof.

  114. Thanks a lot.

  115. $20,000 bill or whatever, you know.

  116. In this case, the guys are just like, well, we need to get this paralytic down.

  117. They open the roof and they lower this friend down.

  118. And then all of a sudden the excitement starts in the story.

  119. Verse 5.

  120. And when Jesus saw their faith, talking about the four friends,

  121. he said to the paralytic, son, your sins are forgiven.

  122. It's very interesting what we have here.

  123. Jesus, he is proclaiming the gospel.

  124. People are there maybe to hear the gospel, but really to see some kind of miracle.

  125. Jesus is a miracle worker.

  126. He heals people.

  127. He casts out demons.

  128. He cleanses lepers.

  129. And he's proclaiming the gospel.

  130. This paralytic comes and there's like almost bated breath, I can picture.

  131. And instead of healing him right off the bat, he says your sins are forgiven.

  132. If we pause it right there, there is no miracle that is happening.

  133. Jesus is just pronouncing words.

  134. The wonderful thing about this is that Jesus is seeing the faith of the friends of the paralytic.

  135. He sees their faith and then looks at the paralytic and forgives them of his sins.

  136. And this isn't like a point in the sermon, a bit of an aside.

  137. Don't give up on praying for your friends and family.

  138. Do not give up.

  139. If you've been praying for something, for some kind of breakthrough for years, don't give up.

  140. God hears your prayers and they're precious to him.

  141. And he might move the next prayer you pray.

  142. He might do a miracle in your midst and change hearts or bring great healing.

  143. This is what we have here.

  144. These guys, in a sense, are interceding for their friend.

  145. They're helping their friend.

  146. They're sacrificing for their friend.

  147. It's a bit of an aside.

  148. Don't stop praying for those in your life.

  149. Let's get back to the text.

  150. Jesus, unlike any other religious leader in the Bible, he is pronouncing forgiveness of sins on his own authority.

  151. The prophets, the kings, whoever, they are saying stuff in the Bible, saying like,

  152. The Lord forgive you your sins.

  153. The Lord forgive you of all of your infirmities.

  154. All of your misdoings.

  155. Jesus here, what does he say?

  156. He says, Son, your sins are forgiven.

  157. He is speaking with authority as if this man whom he just has met is under him.

  158. He is over his authority.

  159. And it's also very interesting that Jesus here, it seems like, so nothing specific is given in terms of what these sins are.

  160. But it's, Jesus is, he's not just saying some kind of generic thing.

  161. He is speaking to the heart of that young man on his cot, on his bed, and he's saying your sins are forgiven.

  162. The very specific things about, the thing about sins is they're very specific to us.

  163. In a kind of a weird way, our sins are the things that make us quite unique.

  164. I mean, you might do the same kind of sin as somebody else, but it's unique to you in the situation.

  165. Jesus looks at this young man and says, son, your sins are forgiven.

  166. He speaks to his heart.

  167. Jesus knows what's up.

  168. He knows what this guy needs.

  169. And he speaks directly to him.

  170. Really, really incredible and also controversial, and this is kind of where it picks up steam.

  171. Mark draws our attention to the next verses.

  172. And in many ways, the scribes are going to say, verse 6 and 7.

  173. But if you're being honest and following along and kind of putting your Christian history behind, if you can,

  174. and you're reading this, you might ask the question,

  175. who is, what kind of gall does Jesus have in saying this?

  176. And the Pharisees say just this in verse 6.

  177. Now, some of the scribes, the scribes of the Pharisees were sitting there questioning in their hearts,

  178. why does this man speak like that?

  179. He is blaspheming.

  180. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  181. The thing here is that they're not wrong.

  182. Verse 7, what does it say?

  183. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  184. They're right.

  185. Jesus never corrects that bit, does he?

  186. Look what he says after.

  187. He says, why do you question these things in your heart?

  188. He is addressing how they're incensed with Jesus,

  189. that he is a blasphemer in their books.

  190. See, the scribes aren't wrong, but they're failing to see that Jesus,

  191. there's something about him.

  192. He is a divine man.

  193. There is something wonderful about this man.

  194. And isn't it so interesting that we can be almost right,

  195. and yet be completely wrong?

  196. We can get 90% or, you know, three quarters of things right,

  197. and we can just slip up on one bit,

  198. and it renders everything wrong.

  199. And this is what's happening with the Pharisees here.

  200. Jesus is perceiving in their spirit.

  201. So not only does Jesus say something that only God does,

  202. aka forgive sins,

  203. but he is perceiving in their spirit.

  204. He is reading their minds.

  205. Who can read the mind of somebody?

  206. I've, you know,

  207. I think I have intuition with Christine, my wife,

  208. where she can give a look,

  209. and I'm just like,

  210. I know exactly what she's thinking.

  211. Maybe I nail it every now and then.

  212. Not too, too often.

  213. We don't have intuition.

  214. We don't know.

  215. We can't read people's minds.

  216. You can know somebody very, very well and misread.

  217. Jesus here, he is nailing it.

  218. He is perceiving what they were thinking.

  219. Only God can do such things.

  220. Who knows the mind of men except God?

  221. Who knows,

  222. who can understand what's going on in the human mind,

  223. in the human heart except God?

  224. And it speaks to Jesus' divinity.

  225. It continues.

  226. Jesus says,

  227. Why do you question these things in your heart?

  228. Which is easier to say to the paralytic,

  229. your sins are forgiven,

  230. or to say, rise, take up your bed, and walk.

  231. And we'll pause there.

  232. What is easier to say?

  233. I can say anything I want.

  234. I can say, yeah,

  235. your sins are forgiven you.

  236. Nobody can verify that.

  237. I just say stuff.

  238. If I all of a sudden then said,

  239. you know,

  240. take up your bed and walk,

  241. and nothing happens,

  242. I mean, that's the harder thing to verify.

  243. That's the harder thing of the two.

  244. I can say whatever I want.

  245. If that person doesn't get up,

  246. it's not verified.

  247. I'm a liar.

  248. I'm a cheat.

  249. I'm a swindler.

  250. My words mean nothing.

  251. Jesus here,

  252. he says,

  253. what is easier to say to the paralytic,

  254. your sins are forgiven,

  255. or to say,

  256. rise up,

  257. rise,

  258. rise,

  259. take up your bed,

  260. and walk.

  261. Verse 10,

  262. but that you may know

  263. that the Son of Man

  264. has authority on earth

  265. to forgive sins.

  266. Then he looks to the paralytic,

  267. I say to you,

  268. rise,

  269. pick up your bed,

  270. and go home.

  271. And the paralytic,

  272. former paralytic,

  273. rose and immediately

  274. picked up his bed

  275. and went out before them all,

  276. so that they were all amazed

  277. and glorified God,

  278. saying,

  279. we never saw anything like this.

  280. Jesus,

  281. he says to the man,

  282. your sins are forgiven,

  283. and then,

  284. he validates that claim

  285. that only God could make

  286. by healing the paralytic.

  287. Because the same authority

  288. and ability to heal

  289. is the same authority

  290. and ability to forgive sins,

  291. to truly forgive sins.

  292. Only God and God alone

  293. can forgive sins.

  294. The authority is only God's,

  295. and clearly here,

  296. Jesus has that authority.

  297. And for you folks,

  298. if you have friends

  299. that are Jehovah's Witnesses,

  300. or are Muslim,

  301. or people that are just skeptics,

  302. atheists,

  303. say something like,

  304. Jesus never ever claimed to be God,

  305. it was some manifestation

  306. that came up later on,

  307. the church made it up,

  308. or Paul made it up.

  309. Jesus, sure,

  310. he doesn't say that I am God.

  311. Everything in this section

  312. screams that Jesus is God.

  313. Everything.

  314. That he has God's divine authority,

  315. God's divine ability.

  316. Only he can forgive sins.

  317. Him and him alone.

  318. Jesus heals the sinner,

  319. but really, what does he do?

  320. He forgives the sinner.

  321. He is validated

  322. as God himself

  323. with all authority.

  324. And this, then,

  325. forgiveness

  326. flavors the rest of this portion

  327. of Scripture.

  328. So,

  329. he shows his forgiveness,

  330. Jesus does,

  331. by healing a paralytic,

  332. but then also

  333. with the call of a traitor.

  334. Take a look with me

  335. at verses 13 and 14.

  336. Jesus went out again

  337. beside the sea,

  338. and all the crowd

  339. was coming to him,

  340. and he was teaching them.

  341. Again,

  342. Jesus is teaching.

  343. He is proclaiming.

  344. He is preaching the gospel.

  345. Verse 14,

  346. And as he passed by,

  347. he saw Levi,

  348. the son of Alphaeus,

  349. sitting at the tax booth.

  350. And he said to him,

  351. Follow me.

  352. And he rose

  353. and followed him.

  354. Levi,

  355. also known as Matthew,

  356. is a tax collector.

  357. And he most certainly

  358. was a traitor

  359. to his people.

  360. He was a collaborator

  361. with a foreign power.

  362. I don't think it's quite

  363. apples to apples,

  364. but I think something

  365. that would maybe

  366. be a bit more current

  367. is, say,

  368. the French

  369. who collaborated

  370. with the Nazis

  371. during the war.

  372. This foreign power

  373. came in.

  374. They were oppressive.

  375. They taxed people

  376. into poverty.

  377. And this tax collector

  378. was a Jewish man

  379. who collected taxes

  380. and stuffed his pockets,

  381. lined his pockets

  382. with money

  383. that was forcefully taken.

  384. There was no chance

  385. that Levi was a part

  386. of the religious community.

  387. He was greedy.

  388. He was on the outskirts.

  389. He was considered

  390. a traitor

  391. to his own people.

  392. He was an unclean person.

  393. In fact,

  394. there were two big rabbis

  395. not too long

  396. after Jesus' time

  397. who disagreed

  398. on just about everything.

  399. But one of the things

  400. that they agreed upon

  401. was that it's totally

  402. permissible to lie

  403. to tax collectors.

  404. They don't deserve

  405. our honesty.

  406. They're traitors.

  407. I don't know

  408. if there's some kind

  409. of equivalent

  410. in our day,

  411. but the tax collectors

  412. were not cool guys.

  413. They weren't.

  414. They're not like CRA people

  415. or just bureaucrats

  416. just doing their job.

  417. These guys were corrupt.

  418. They were corrupt.

  419. They sold out

  420. their own people.

  421. Jesus shows up

  422. just like with

  423. Andrew and Simon

  424. and James and John

  425. in chapter 1

  426. and he doesn't say,

  427. Levi,

  428. you need to get

  429. your act together,

  430. clean yourself up,

  431. and then come follow me.

  432. He just says,

  433. follow me.

  434. It's the same call

  435. as the four other ones

  436. in chapter 1.

  437. He says,

  438. follow me.

  439. And what does Levi do?

  440. He leaves his tax booth

  441. and he follows Jesus.

  442. We start to see

  443. the beginning of restoration,

  444. that forgiveness

  445. is being extended

  446. to somebody

  447. who ought not

  448. to be forgiven.

  449. I mean,

  450. he really shouldn't.

  451. He should pay

  452. for what he's done.

  453. You know,

  454. sometimes vengeance

  455. feels good

  456. and it feels right

  457. and I'm not saying

  458. it's,

  459. I'm not condoning it,

  460. but it's like,

  461. like you're,

  462. if you're being honest

  463. with yourself,

  464. like yeah,

  465. that guy should just

  466. be tossed in jail.

  467. The key should be

  468. melted down,

  469. like not even

  470. tossed in a river,

  471. just obliterated.

  472. Jesus says,

  473. follow me

  474. and he starts

  475. to extend forgiveness

  476. and all of a sudden

  477. we start to see

  478. that the forgiveness

  479. that Jesus extends

  480. is truly scandalous.

  481. It is.

  482. It knows no bounds.

  483. There's no untouchables

  484. to Jesus' forgiveness.

  485. No matter what

  486. we have done,

  487. are we Levi?

  488. And even if we were worse,

  489. this text tells us

  490. that the call

  491. is for us as well.

  492. It's beautiful.

  493. It really,

  494. it really is something.

  495. And it,

  496. it makes me uncomfortable.

  497. Because the,

  498. the,

  499. the levels of forgiveness

  500. that have been extended

  501. to me,

  502. we'll talk about this

  503. in a bit,

  504. God is calling me

  505. to extend them to others

  506. and I don't want to.

  507. I really don't.

  508. Maybe you don't either.

  509. I don't know,

  510. I don't know

  511. if you,

  512. if you want to either.

  513. But Jesus extends

  514. this forgiveness

  515. to persona non grata

  516. Levi.

  517. It's,

  518. it really is

  519. something else.

  520. And what is

  521. Levi's response?

  522. Yeah,

  523. I'm taking it.

  524. I'm,

  525. I'm taking this,

  526. this offer

  527. and I'm following Jesus.

  528. And this brings us

  529. to the other thing

  530. that shows us

  531. about God's forgiveness

  532. is the dinner party.

  533. So it's,

  534. it's clear,

  535. we'll continue on,

  536. verse 15.

  537. It's clear that this is

  538. at Levi's,

  539. what's implied is that

  540. it's at Levi's house.

  541. But before we read it,

  542. it's also implied here

  543. that Levi isn't the host.

  544. But Jesus is the host.

  545. And as he reclined,

  546. Jesus at table

  547. in Levi's house,

  548. many tax collectors

  549. and sinners

  550. were reclining

  551. with Jesus

  552. and his disciples.

  553. For there were many

  554. who followed him.

  555. And the scribes

  556. of the Pharisees

  557. when they saw

  558. that he was eating

  559. with sinners

  560. and tax collectors,

  561. see unclean there.

  562. Unclean.

  563. No different

  564. in many respects

  565. than the leprous man.

  566. Okay?

  567. See,

  568. see that.

  569. Think unclean.

  570. We'll go back

  571. in verse 16.

  572. And the scribes

  573. of the Pharisees

  574. when they saw

  575. that he was eating

  576. with sinners

  577. and tax collectors,

  578. those that were unclean,

  579. said to Jesus' disciples,

  580. why does he eat

  581. with tax collectors

  582. and sinners?

  583. And when Jesus heard it,

  584. he said to them,

  585. those who are well

  586. have no need

  587. of a physician,

  588. but those who are sick.

  589. I came not to call

  590. the righteous,

  591. but the sinners.

  592. And it's not as though

  593. there are a class

  594. of righteous people

  595. that Jesus isn't referring to.

  596. What he's saying is,

  597. I've come for everybody

  598. because everybody's a sinner.

  599. There are none righteous.

  600. I've come for everybody.

  601. Who here looks like

  602. the true,

  603. unclean sinner?

  604. Is it the tax collectors

  605. and sinners?

  606. Sinners is this kind

  607. of generic term.

  608. Or does it,

  609. is it the Pharisees?

  610. Like,

  611. is there not room

  612. at the table

  613. for them too?

  614. I think there would be.

  615. Their pride wells up.

  616. Their self-righteousness

  617. wells up.

  618. We are the religious ones.

  619. These people

  620. that were the tax collectors

  621. and sinners,

  622. they were either

  623. too busy

  624. or too poor

  625. or just completely indifferent

  626. to join any kind

  627. of religious life

  628. in Israel at the time.

  629. Interestingly,

  630. shepherds were a part

  631. of that.

  632. Shepherds,

  633. I know we read about

  634. shepherds

  635. in King David,

  636. King David being a shepherd

  637. and Christ has

  638. a beautiful picture

  639. of a shepherd.

  640. But shepherds became

  641. the type that were

  642. untrusted

  643. because they weren't

  644. a part of religious life.

  645. prostitutes,

  646. tax collectors,

  647. beggars,

  648. lepers,

  649. you name it.

  650. They were unable

  651. to participate

  652. in religious life.

  653. And Jesus,

  654. what does he do?

  655. He doesn't whip them.

  656. He doesn't just

  657. give them a tongue lashing.

  658. He eats with them.

  659. He has table fellowship

  660. with them.

  661. You can invite anybody

  662. over to your house

  663. and if you feel comfortable,

  664. you probably should

  665. if you can.

  666. But, you know,

  667. it's nice to have dinner

  668. with somebody.

  669. To have table fellowship

  670. with somebody

  671. in the Bible,

  672. it meant

  673. that you were

  674. embracing them.

  675. That there was

  676. a connection,

  677. there was

  678. a friendship,

  679. there was

  680. some sort of

  681. deep,

  682. deep bond.

  683. And that's what's

  684. happening with Jesus.

  685. He is

  686. the true host.

  687. He is

  688. forgiving the sinners

  689. and the tax collectors.

  690. And the basis

  691. of this table fellowship

  692. is truly forgiveness.

  693. And although

  694. we don't see it here

  695. as though

  696. the tax collectors

  697. and sinners

  698. are throwing themselves

  699. at Jesus' feet

  700. asking for forgiveness,

  701. forgiveness,

  702. we know that

  703. in Scripture

  704. that the basis

  705. for table fellowship

  706. is the forgiveness

  707. of sins.

  708. How do we know?

  709. At the end of the age,

  710. and if anybody

  711. wants to turn to,

  712. I'll just read it

  713. off my notes,

  714. Revelation chapter 19,

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  715. at the end of the age,

  716. the redeemed of God,

  717. those that He saves,

  718. will dine with Him.

  719. It's called

  720. the marriage supper

  721. of the Lamb.

  722. And although Revelation,

  723. the book of Revelation,

  724. can be kind of intense

  725. and difficult to understand

  726. and, I don't know,

  727. cause of all sorts

  728. of controversy,

  729. Revelation 19,

  730. 6-9,

  731. I mean,

  732. it is like the high point

  733. of our existence,

  734. of what we'll experience.

  735. That we are forgiven

  736. in such a way,

  737. clothed with God's righteousness,

  738. and we dine with Him.

  739. Verse 6 of chapter 19,

  740. Then I heard what seemed

  741. to be the voice

  742. of a great multitude.

  743. This is John,

  744. the Apostle,

  745. speaking.

  746. Like the roar

  747. of many waters,

  748. and like the sound

  749. of mighty peals

  750. of thunder,

  751. crying out,

  752. Hallelujah!

  753. For the Lord,

  754. our God,

  755. the Almighty reigns.

  756. Let us rejoice

  757. and exalt

  758. and give Him the glory.

  759. For the marriage

  760. of the Lamb

  761. has come,

  762. and the bride

  763. has made herself ready.

  764. It was granted

  765. her to clothe herself

  766. with fine linen,

  767. bright and pure.

  768. For the fine linen

  769. is the righteous deeds

  770. of the saints.

  771. And verse 9 says,

  772. And the angel said to me,

  773. Write this,

  774. Blessed are those

  775. who are invited

  776. to the marriage supper

  777. of the Lamb.

  778. And he said to me,

  779. These are the true words

  780. of God.

  781. To dine with Jesus.

  782. That there is no more

  783. separation between us

  784. and Him.

  785. His forgiveness

  786. goes down

  787. to the last inch

  788. of our being.

  789. There's no more

  790. of us

  791. that is no longer

  792. redeemed.

  793. We're redeemed

  794. completely.

  795. If you are honest

  796. with yourself

  797. and you

  798. ask yourself,

  799. What sins

  800. have I committed

  801. that are very unique

  802. to me?

  803. That make me unique?

  804. And if you are

  805. honest and raw

  806. with yourself

  807. about that,

  808. and you might feel

  809. shame and guilt,

  810. look to the cross

  811. and know that God

  812. has forgiven them all

  813. if you only

  814. cry out to Him.

  815. If you only

  816. leave the tax booth

  817. and follow Him.

  818. In the end,

  819. it really isn't

  820. the amount of faith

  821. we have.

  822. And we want to grow

  823. in our faith.

  824. We do.

  825. But it's the object

  826. of our faith.

  827. That's what matters.

  828. It does not,

  829. it doesn't matter

  830. as much

  831. in many respects.

  832. In fact,

  833. it doesn't matter

  834. at all

  835. at how tight

  836. my grasp

  837. is on Jesus

  838. if His grasp

  839. on me

  840. exists.

  841. Because He'll never

  842. let me go.

  843. That's why

  844. when we go through

  845. tough times

  846. where our faith

  847. wanes,

  848. it's like we have

  849. no faith,

  850. it feels like,

  851. we can be sure

  852. that God

  853. in Christ

  854. is not letting us go.

  855. The object

  856. of our faith

  857. is what matters.

  858. So Jesus

  859. dines with sinners.

  860. And it is this

  861. beautiful picture

  862. of what is to come

  863. and all of a sudden

  864. we start to see

  865. a bit more

  866. of who this Messiah is.

  867. Mark is laying

  868. these breadcrumbs.

  869. He's leading us

  870. on the trail

  871. to the cross.

  872. We're seeing

  873. what Jesus is going

  874. to do on the cross.

  875. How He is going

  876. to truly forgive

  877. our sins.

  878. He's going

  879. to pay the penalty

  880. on our behalf

  881. so that we can

  882. be in His presence

  883. forever.

  884. It's something

  885. you could have

  886. infinite lifetimes

  887. to try to earn

  888. and you won't

  889. earn it.

  890. It's incredible.

  891. It is remarkable.

  892. How do we respond?

  893. Well, there's

  894. a few different ways.

  895. We can look

  896. at the four

  897. friends

  898. lowering their

  899. paralytic friend

  900. through the roof.

  901. We can look

  902. at Levi

  903. and how he

  904. leaves his tax booth.

  905. Those are all

  906. I think really good

  907. things to look at

  908. as an example

  909. of how we are

  910. to respond

  911. to Jesus.

  912. But Jesus

  913. in verse 14

  914. of chapter 1

  915. really verse 15

  916. when Jesus

  917. comes on the scene

  918. his first words

  919. that he says

  920. in Mark's gospel

  921. it says

  922. the time is fulfilled

  923. and the kingdom

  924. of God

  925. is at hand.

  926. Repent and believe

  927. in the gospel.

  928. The response

  929. is to repent

  930. and believe.

  931. It is.

  932. Jesus says it.

  933. And in the same

  934. message

  935. he either

  936. preaches

  937. teaches

  938. or proclaims

  939. it's the same

  940. thing.

  941. Repent

  942. and believe

  943. in the gospel.

  944. So what does it

  945. mean to repent?

  946. I think

  947. it's being honest

  948. about our sin.

  949. We need to recognize

  950. that we need

  951. deep forgiveness.

  952. We need to not

  953. justify the fact

  954. that we are

  955. tax collectors

  956. and sinners.

  957. And our society

  958. is set up

  959. in such a way

  960. maybe even

  961. your mind

  962. is set up

  963. in such a way

  964. that justifies

  965. sin.

  966. The way

  967. we see need

  968. and choose

  969. not to

  970. meet it

  971. not because

  972. we don't have

  973. the means

  974. or the time

  975. or the ability

  976. because we're selfish.

  977. Or the things

  978. we do with our bodies.

  979. How we view

  980. sexuality.

  981. We have this

  982. kind of subjective

  983. nature about it.

  984. How we

  985. abuse people

  986. with words

  987. or deeds.

  988. We are mean.

  989. We are

  990. just

  991. low level

  992. abusive

  993. in maybe

  994. sometimes

  995. the way

  996. we treat people.

  997. Whatever it may be

  998. we can easily

  999. justify our sin.

  1000. The call

  1001. of repentance

  1002. is to just

  1003. be honest.

  1004. Be honest

  1005. with your need

  1006. for Jesus.

  1007. That's it.

  1008. I mean

  1009. it really

  1010. is just

  1011. first and foremost

  1012. recognize

  1013. that we

  1014. are in need

  1015. of him.

  1016. We can't

  1017. live a godly

  1018. life.

  1019. We are the

  1020. tax collectors

  1021. and sinners

  1022. in the story

  1023. by the way.

  1024. Just in case

  1025. you were thinking

  1026. you were

  1027. maybe

  1028. I don't know

  1029. somebody a bit

  1030. more nicer

  1031. in the story.

  1032. I'm the

  1033. sinner and tax

  1034. collector

  1035. in the story.

  1036. Maybe you're

  1037. even the

  1038. Pharisee

  1039. or the

  1040. scribe.

  1041. The call

  1042. is still

  1043. the same

  1044. to repent

  1045. and believe

  1046. so we

  1047. repent

  1048. we throw

  1049. ourselves

  1050. at the

  1051. mercy

  1052. of

  1053. Jesus

  1054. we stop

  1055. justifying

  1056. we stop

  1057. seeing truth

  1058. as subjective

  1059. but objective

  1060. that there is a

1061. truth that there is a

  1062. way to truly live

  1063. and the second thing

  1064. is to believe

1065. and it is to have

  1066. faith in Jesus

  1067. and again

  1068. it is

  1069. it matters

  1070. more about

  1071. who our faith

  1072. is in

  1073. than how much

  1074. faith we have.

  1075. We want to continue

  1076. to grow in faith.

  1077. I can't say that

  1078. enough

  1079. but we have

  1080. our faith

  1081. and trust

  1082. in Jesus.

  1083. We need to be

  1084. careful

  1085. that we're not

  1086. like the crowds.

  1087. The crowds

  1088. in the gospel

  1089. of Mark

  1090. for whatever

  1091. reason

  1092. show up

  1093. and Jesus

  1094. has compassion

  1095. on them

  1096. he teaches

  1097. them

  1098. but they

  1099. get in the

  1100. way

  1101. the crowds

  1102. do.

  1103. They get in

  1104. the way

  1105. of this

  1106. whole healing

  1107. of the

  1108. paralytic.

  1109. The crowds

  1110. aren't

  1111. they don't

  1112. exactly have

  1113. the best

  1114. reputation

  1115. here.

  1116. Remember

  1117. Jesus

  1118. when he's

  1119. going to

  1120. get

  1121. crucified

  1122. where are

  1123. the crowds

  1124. then?

  1125. It's really

  1126. easy to

  1127. think

  1128. I am

  1129. close to

  1130. Jesus

  1131. because I

  1132. am a

  1133. part of

  1134. the church.

  1135. I am a

  1136. church goer

  1137. and it's

  1138. really good

  1139. to go to

  1140. church

  1141. and to be

  1142. around

  1143. church people.

  1144. It really

  1145. is.

  1146. But let

  1147. that not

  1148. be confused

  1149. with having

  1150. genuine

  1151. faith in

  1152. Christ.

  1153. To be

  1154. more of

  1155. like the

  1156. Levi

  1157. who follows

  1158. Jesus

  1159. rather than

  1160. the crowds

  1161. that just

  1162. hang around

  1163. looking for

  1164. a show

  1165. or maybe

  1166. the benefit

  1167. of being

  1168. a part

  1169. of a

  1170. community

  1171. or being

  1172. a part

  1173. of a

  1174. more of

  1175. like a

  1176. respectable

  1177. person or

  1178. a part of

  1179. polite society.

  1180. I don't mean

  1181. necessarily like

  1182. within our

  1183. community but

  1184. within the

  1185. group.

  1186. I don't

  1187. know.

  1188. Whatever

  1189. thing that

  1190. you think

  1191. coming to

  1192. church will

  1193. do,

  1194. it has to

  1195. start with

  1196. Christ.

  1197. Repent and

  1198. believe.

  1199. And it is

  1200. hard and I'll

  1201. close with

  1202. this.

  1203. We're not

  1204. going to

  1205. get to

  1206. the second

  1207. part of

  1208. Mark until

  1209. sometime in

  1210. the new

  1211. year.

  1212. We're going

  1213. to go up

  1214. to chapter

  1215. nine and

  1216. then we'll

  1217. switch it up

  1218. for a few

  1219. weeks or

  1220. something like

  1221. that and

  1222. then we'll

  1223. come back

  1224. to Mark.

  1225. But when we

  1226. come back to

  1227. Mark,

  1228. whenever that

  1229. will be,

  1230. I think

  1231. maybe the

  1232. fall of

  1233. 2022,

  1234. there's this

  1235. really beautiful

  1236. picture where

  1237. this desperate

  1238. man comes to

  1239. Jesus and

  1240. begs that

  1241. Jesus would

  1242. do a miracle

  1243. for his

  1244. boy.

  1245. And he

  1246. says to

  1247. Jesus,

  1248. I believe,

  1249. help my

  1250. unbelief.

  1251. That is

  1252. becoming a

  1253. prayer in

  1254. my life

  1255. because I

  1256. realize,

  1257. Lord, I

  1258. believe,

  1259. actually I

  1260. don't,

  1261. help me.

  1262. My faith is

  1263. small.

  1264. I don't

  1265. trust that

  1266. you can

  1267. really

  1268. forgive my

  1269. sins.

  1270. That you

  1271. are the

  1272. one who's

  1273. really going

  1274. to restore

  1275. me.

  1276. And cleanse

  1277. me.

  1278. And that I

  1279. truly have a

  1280. spot at

  1281. your table.

  1282. But the

  1283. prayer is,

  1284. I believe,

  1285. help my

  1286. unbelief,

  1287. I believe,

  1288. even with a

  1289. tiny shred,

  1290. you can

  1291. pray,

  1292. of faith,

  1293. that you

  1294. are the

  1295. one who's

  1296. doing this

  1297. work.

  1298. And I

  1299. think it

  1300. brings great

  1301. joy to

  1302. God.

  1303. And that he

  1304. will work

  1305. in our

  1306. hearts to

  1307. grow that.

  1308. And we

  1309. grow,

  1310. by the

  1311. way,

  1312. with

  1313. fellowshipping

  1314. with one

  1315. another,

  1316. by reading

  1317. his word,

  1318. by praying

  1319. with one

  1320. another,

  1321. by lifting

  1322. each other

  1323. up,

  1324. carrying each

  1325. other's

  1326. burdens,

  1327. not trying

  1328. to get

  1329. some kind

  1330. of new

  1331. result by

  1332. the same

  1333. sinful

  1334. decisions.

  1335. Friends,

  1336. our God

  1337. has set a

  1338. table for

  1339. us.

  1340. It is

  1341. what we

  1342. will be

  1343. doing for

  1344. eternity.

  1345. Let's

  1346. really press

  1347. into that.

  1348. Heavenly

  1349. Father,

  1350. we thank

  1351. you so

  1352. much for

  1353. the truth

  1354. of your

  1355. word.

  1356. We thank

  1357. you that

  1358. Jesus

  1359. indeed came

  1360. to heal

  1361. the sick

  1362. and not

  1363. the well,

  1364. to call

  1365. the sinner

  1366. not the

  1367. righteous.

  1368. Lord,

  1369. help us

  1370. to never

  1371. think that

  1372. in our

  1373. own strength

  1374. we can

  1375. be the

  1376. righteous,

  1377. that we

  1378. are well,

  1379. but it's

  1380. only through

  1381. your Son

  1382. that we

  1383. are made

  1384. righteous,

  1385. only through

  1386. your Son

  1387. that we

  1388. are forgiven,

  1389. only through

  1390. your Son

  1391. that we

  1392. are cleansed.

  1393. Lord,

  1394. by your

  1395. Spirit,

  1396. do a big

  1397. work in

  1398. our hearts,

  1399. we pray,

  1400. in Jesus'

  1401. name.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. Amen.

  1404. Amen.

  1405. Amen.

  1406. Amen.

  1407. Amen.

  1408. Amen.

  1409. Amen.

  1410. Amen.
