  1. Today's scripture is taken from John 6, verse 22 to 60, where Jesus draws people to see that he is the bread of life that satisfies.

    John 6:22–60

  2. In John 6, verse 22, we read,

    John 6:22

  3. On the next day, the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there,

  4. and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.

  5. Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

  6. So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

  7. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him,

  8. Rabbi, when did you come here?

  9. Jesus answered them,

  10. Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

  11. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.

  12. For on him, God the Father has set his seal.

  13. Then they said to him,

  14. What must we do to be doing the works of God?

  15. Jesus answered them,

  16. This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.

  17. So they said to him,

  18. Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you?

  19. What work do you perform?

  20. Our fathers ate the manna and the wildness.

  21. As it is written,

  22. He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  23. Jesus said to them,

  24. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  25. it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven,

  26. but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

  27. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

  28. They said to him,

  29. Sir, give us this bread always.

  30. Jesus said to them,

  31. I am the bread of life.

  32. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger,

  33. and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  34. But I said to you,

  35. that you have seen me and yet do not believe.

  36. All that the Father gives me will come to me,

  37. and whoever comes to me,

  38. I will never cast out.

  39. For I have come down from heaven,

  40. not to do my own will,

  41. but the will of him who sent me.

  42. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  43. that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me,

  44. but raise it up on the last day.

  45. For this is the will of my Father,

  46. that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him

  47. should have eternal life,

  48. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  49. So the Jews grumbled about him,

  50. because he said,

  51. I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  52. They said,

  53. Is not this Jesus,

  54. the son of Joseph,

  55. whose father and mother we know?

  56. How does he now say,

  57. I have come down from heaven?

  58. Jesus answered them,

  59. Do not grumble among yourselves.

  60. No one can come to me

  61. unless the Father who sent me draws him,

  62. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  63. It is written in the prophets,

  64. and they will all be taught by God.

  65. Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father

  66. comes to me.

  67. Not that anyone has seen the Father,

  68. except he who is from God.

  69. He has seen the Father.

  70. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  71. whoever believes has eternal life.

  72. I am the bread of life.

  73. Your fathers ate the manna in their wildness,

  74. and they died.

  75. This is the bread that comes down from heaven,

  76. so that one may eat of it and not die.

  77. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

  78. If anyone eats of this bread,

  79. he will live forever.

  80. And the bread that I will give for life,

  81. for the life of the world,

  82. is my flesh.

  83. The Jews then disputed among themselves,

  84. saying,

  85. How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

  86. So Jesus said to them,

  87. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  88. unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man

  89. and drink his blood,

  90. you have no life in you.

  91. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood

  92. has eternal life,

  93. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  94. For my flesh is true food,

  95. and my blood is true drink.

  96. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood

  97. abides in me,

  98. and I in him.

  99. As the living Father sent me,

  100. and I live because of the Father,

  101. so whoever feeds on me,

  102. he also will live because of me.

  103. This is the bread that came down from heaven,

  104. not like the bread the fathers ate and died.

  105. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.

  106. Jesus said these things in the synagogue,

  107. as he taught at Capernaum.

  108. When many of his disciples heard it,

  109. they said,

  110. This is a hard saying.

  111. Who can listen to it?

  112. This is the word of God.

  113. I'm going to pass over to Evangel now.

  114. Good morning, Watermark Church.

  115. It's so great to be with you.

  116. As Chris was saying,

  117. my name's Evangel.

  118. I've been in Hong Kong for about three and a half years.

  119. I pastor at Emmanuel English Church.

  120. I was born and raised in Toronto,

  121. in Canada.

  122. Fun fact about myself,

  123. my middle name is actually Jeremy,

  124. and my parents were going to name me Jeremy,

  125. but last minute,

  126. they thought that the name Evangel was a better name,

  127. so Jeremy became a middle name,

  128. so no offense to the Jeremy Tim at Watermark,

  129. but we could have been twins,

  130. but it looks like God had other plans for us.

  131. So yeah, just thankful to be here with you.

  132. Again, we're in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  133. and we're exploring the I am statements of Jesus together.

  134. And I think it's such a timely series to be doing.

  135. With all that's going on in the world,

  136. with all that's going on in the city,

  137. it's so important to know who Jesus is

  138. in the midst of it all.

  139. So I just want to begin with prayer.

  140. Why don't you join me?

  141. Lord Jesus, we come to you,

  142. and we just pray that you would open the eyes of our hearts

  143. to behold your glory.

  144. Holy Spirit, would you do a deep and powerful work

  145. in each and every single one of us

  146. listening and worshiping this morning.

  147. In your name we pray.

  148. Amen.

  149. All right.

  150. So I want to start us off by asking two questions.

  151. Two questions.

  152. So the first question is this.

  153. How fulfilled do you feel in life right now?

  154. And second, what do you need to feel satisfaction in life?

  155. So how fulfilled do you feel in life right now?

  156. And what do you need to feel satisfaction in life?

  157. If the average person in Hong Kong were to answer this question,

  158. it might sound something like this.

  159. I'm very dissatisfied and discontent.

  160. I feel trapped.

  161. I can't see the people that I care about.

  162. I can't do the things that I enjoy.

  163. I'm worried not just about my physical health,

  164. but my mental well-being.

  165. I'm scared of being separated from my family

  166. if I get COVID or perhaps I have COVID

  167. and I am bored out of my mind in isolation.

  168. The only way I'm going to feel good about life again

  169. is if everything goes back to normal on April 21st.

  170. You know, no more restrictions, no more COVID, no more masks.

  171. How satisfied and fulfilled do you feel about life right now?

  172. And what do you need to find satisfaction in life?

  173. In verse 35 of today's passage,

  174. Jesus answers these questions saying,

  175. I am the bread of life.

  176. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger.

  177. Whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  178. And by calling himself the bread of life,

  179. Jesus claims he's what is needed for life

  180. to be fully and truly satisfying.

  181. Jesus uses the metaphor of bread

  182. for who he is and what he does for people.

  183. So bread is nourishment.

  184. It's a staple food for many people

  185. who eat it every day to keep their bodies alive.

  186. Bread is satisfying.

  187. When someone is feeling hungry,

  188. bread fills you up really quick.

  189. It staves off that uncomfortable feeling of hunger

  190. and leaves your body feeling content.

  191. So nourishment, satisfaction, contentment,

  192. these are all effects of bread

  193. that the Jews in Jesus' days

  194. would have immediately connected with.

  195. But Jesus is more than bread.

  196. He is the bread of life.

  197. He provides nourishment and satisfaction

  198. for the human heart.

  199. Jesus is using what bread does for the body

  200. to tell us what he does spiritually.

  201. He uses the longings and cravings our bodies have

  202. to help us understand about the deeper longings

  203. and desires of our souls.

  204. And that's very clear what Jesus is doing

  205. because he talks about himself being bread,

  206. but he doesn't say right after to literally eat him.

  207. Instead, he says, come to me and believe in me.

  208. Jesus says he's the bread,

  209. but he's doing more than what bread can do.

  210. Not only can Jesus satisfy hunger,

  211. he can also satisfy thirst.

  212. And the satisfaction that Jesus brings is so great.

  213. It never ends.

  214. It's permanent.

  215. How Jesus satisfies is much greater

  216. and more essential to what people need

  217. than what bread can provide.

  218. Let me try to reword this in a different way.

  219. Jesus is saying,

  220. supreme satisfaction in life

  221. is found by coming to him in faith

  222. to nourish your heart.

  223. Supreme satisfaction in life

  224. is found by coming to Jesus in faith

  225. to nourish your heart.

  226. What Jesus is saying here

  227. reveals something fundamental

  228. to who we are as people

  229. and what we need.

  230. people are more than physical beings

  231. who need food.

  232. People are more than emotional beings

  233. who need to be understood

  234. and empathized with.

  235. More than all of that,

  236. more fundamental,

  237. people are worshipers

  238. with hearts that long

  239. and desire

  240. for someone

  241. or something

  242. to love

  243. and devote

  244. ourselves

  245. to.

  246. And Jesus is saying,

  247. only I

  248. can fully

  249. and permanently

  250. satisfy you

  251. in this way.

  252. But he actually tells us

  253. more than that as well.

  254. Not only does he tell us

  255. he satisfies us,

  256. he tells us

  257. the effect

  258. of finding

  259. satisfaction in him.

  260. So in this long discussion

  261. with the Jews,

  262. Jesus reveals

  263. to them more

  264. about what he does

  265. as the bread of life.

  266. So in verses

  267. 54 to 56,

  268. he says,

  269. whoever feeds

  270. on my flesh

  271. and drinks my blood

  272. has eternal life

  273. and I will raise him up

  274. on the last day

  275. for my flesh

  276. is true food

  277. and my blood

  278. is true drink.

  279. Whoever feeds

  280. on my flesh

  281. and drinks my blood

  282. abides in me

  283. and I

  284. in him.

  285. In verse 54,

  286. feeding

  287. on Jesus

  288. or finding

  289. satisfaction

  290. in Jesus

  291. means

  292. eternal life.

  293. not only is it

  294. the solution

  295. to the desire

  296. of our hearts

  297. but to all

  298. of our physical

  299. needs and desires

  300. because the result

  301. is that Jesus

  302. will raise

  303. this person up

  304. on the last day

  305. meaning he's going

  306. to raise this person

  307. back from the dead

  308. to live forever.

  309. Verse 56

  310. tells us

  311. feeding on Jesus

  312. puts him

  313. and us

  314. into intimate

  315. relationship

  316. with each other.

  317. one where

  318. Jesus

  319. abides in us

  320. and we

  321. abide in Jesus.

  322. So eternal life,

  323. satisfaction,

  324. relationship

  325. with God,

  326. these three things

  327. are interconnected.

  328. Ultimate satisfaction

  329. is found

  330. in intimate

  331. relationship

  332. with Jesus.

  333. Relationship

  334. with Jesus

  335. means eternal life.

  336. Eternal life

  337. is lasting

  338. satisfaction

  339. and fulfillment

  340. through relationship

  341. with Jesus.

  342. Supreme

  343. satisfaction

  344. in life

  345. is found

  346. by coming

  347. to Jesus

  348. in faith

  349. to nourish

  350. your heart.

  351. so Jesus

  352. truly

  353. satisfies.

  354. So this

  355. is a truth

  356. that many

  357. Christians

  358. would know

  359. and many

  360. of you

  361. would agree.

  362. Yeah,

  363. Jesus satisfies.

  364. The question

  365. is

  366. how

  367. true

  368. is this

  369. in your own

  370. day-to-day

  371. experience?

  372. Whoever

  373. comes to me

  374. shall never

  375. hunger,

  376. whoever

  377. believes in me

  378. shall never

  379. thirst,

  380. there's often

  381. a disconnect

  382. between what

  383. Jesus promises

  384. here

  385. to what

  386. we experience

  387. in life.

  388. Because in life

  389. it seems

  390. like we're

  391. constantly

  392. striving

  393. for something

  394. else.

  395. We're feeling

  396. unsatisfied

  397. with our

  398. circumstances.

  399. The good

  400. news of the

  401. gospel

  402. is that

  403. Jesus

  404. does

  405. satisfy

  406. the desires

  407. of your

  408. heart

  409. fully

  410. and

  411. supremely.

  412. God

  413. himself

  414. came

  415. down

  416. from

  417. heaven

  418. to

  419. give

  420. this

  421. life

  422. to

  423. the

  424. world.

  425. This

  426. satisfying

  427. life is

  428. available for

  429. you here

  430. and now

  431. to enjoy,

  432. but the

  433. question is

  434. are you

  435. going to

  436. Jesus

  437. to receive

  438. it from

  439. him?

  440. to come

  441. to come

  442. to him

  443. to come

  444. to him

  445. correctly

  446. in faith.

  447. The first

  448. thing we need

  449. to do is

  450. to come

  451. to Jesus

  452. with the

  453. right

  454. priorities.

  455. The second

  456. thing is

  457. to trust

  458. Jesus

  459. alone

  460. for

  461. satisfaction

  462. in life.

  463. faith.

  464. And the

  465. last thing

  466. is to

  467. keep going

  468. to Jesus

  469. in faith

  470. again and

  471. again and

  472. again.

  473. So whether

  474. you've never

  475. come to

  476. faith in

  477. Jesus,

  478. whether you're

  479. not a believer

  480. or you're

  481. still seeking,

  482. or whether

  483. you need to

  484. go to Jesus

  485. in faith

  486. again,

  487. what Jesus

  488. says in

  489. this passage

  490. is so

  491. relevant to

  492. all of

  493. us.

  494. So we're

  495. going to

  496. explore what

  497. it means to

  498. come to

  499. Jesus in

  500. more detail.

  501. the first

  502. thing is to

  503. come to

  504. him with

  505. the right

  506. priorities.

  507. So I

  508. want us

  509. to ask,

  510. you know,

  511. why are

  512. you coming

  513. to Jesus?

  514. Why are

  515. you in

  516. this Zoom

  517. service this

  518. morning?

  519. So why are

  520. you coming

  521. to Jesus

  522. and what

  523. do you

  524. want Jesus

  525. to do

  526. for you?

  527. What result

  528. do you want

  529. to come

  530. out of

  531. after having

  532. worship

  533. together with

  534. the Watermark

  535. family today?

  536. verse 26

  537. tells us

  538. crowds of

  539. people were

  540. coming to

  541. Jesus because

  542. he had just

  543. performed an

  544. amazing miracle

  545. to multiply

  546. bread and

  547. feed 5,000

  548. men and

  549. their families.

  550. The crowds

  551. were coming

  552. to Jesus

  553. though because

  554. they wanted

  555. him to

  556. satisfy their

  557. bodily needs.

  558. They were

  559. also coming

  560. to Jesus

  561. because they

  562. wanted Jesus

  563. to give

  564. them political

  565. freedom.

  566. After

  567. witnessing

  568. Jesus'

  569. miracle,

  570. the crowds

  571. in verses

  572. 14 to

  573. 15

  574. want to

  575. force him

  576. to be

  577. their king.

  578. They believe

  579. that Jesus

  580. would be the

  581. one who's

  582. going to

  583. free them

  584. from Roman

  585. rule.

  586. So in

  587. verse 24,

  588. when they

  589. don't see

  590. Jesus,

  591. they continue

  592. to pursue

  593. him with

  594. extreme

  595. dedication

  596. and zeal.

  597. They were

  598. willing to

  599. cross the

  600. sea to

  601. come to

  602. Jesus.

  603. And when

  604. they find

  605. him, this

  606. is what

  607. Jesus says

  608. to them.

  609. Do not

  610. work for

  611. the food

  612. that perishes

  613. but for

  614. the food

  615. that endures

  616. to eternal

  617. life.

  618. Jesus is

  619. telling them

  620. redirect your

  621. priorities.

  622. Now all

  623. the effort

  624. you've just

  625. spent to

  626. meet your

  627. physical needs

  628. should be

  629. directed to

  630. satisfying your

  631. spiritual need.

  632. But the

  633. crowd in

  634. this passage

  635. misses the

  636. point.

  637. Instead of

  638. asking about

  639. the eternal

  640. life Jesus

  641. told them

  642. to seek,

  643. they asked

  644. him about

  645. the work

  646. they needed

  647. to do.

  648. Why are

  649. you coming

  650. to Jesus?

  651. And what

  652. do you want

  653. Jesus to

  654. do for

  655. you?

  656. See, the

  657. point here

  658. isn't that

  659. we shouldn't

  660. go to Jesus

  661. with our

  662. physical needs.

  663. The point

  664. is that we

  665. need to

  666. come to

  667. Jesus

  668. admitting that

  669. our greatest

  670. need is

  671. for him

  672. to satisfy

  673. our hearts

  674. and to

  675. desire that

  676. above all

  677. else.

  678. Jesus does

  679. care about

  680. physical needs.

  681. He just

  682. performed a

  683. miracle to

  684. feed the

  685. 5,000

  686. people.

  687. But the

  688. reason Jesus

  689. satisfied their

  690. physical needs

  691. was to point

  692. them to the

  693. greater need

  694. of their

  695. heart.

  696. You know,

  697. we're so much

  698. like the

  699. Jewish people

  700. in this

  701. passage.

  702. So much

  703. more than

  704. we would

  705. like to

  706. think.

  707. You know,

  708. a couple

  709. weeks ago,

  710. I was

  711. caught up in

  712. the whole

  713. grocery store

  714. fiasco.

  715. I hope your

  716. experience was

  717. better than

  718. mine.

  719. But, you

  720. know, in

  721. my area,

  722. I live in

  723. Mong Kok,

  724. right in the

  725. heart of the

  726. city, on

  727. Dundas

  728. Street, where

  729. there's a

  730. Paisanos and

  731. all the

  732. busiest

  733. stores and

  734. shops are

  735. usually there.

  736. And lines

  737. were ridiculously

  738. long.

  739. They were

  740. out the

  741. door.

  742. Each person

  743. had like a

  744. shopping cart

  745. full of

  746. food, which

  747. added to

  748. the waiting

  749. time.

  750. And the

  751. one thing

  752. that I

  753. found hardest

  754. to find

  755. was bread.

  756. And I

  757. needed to

  758. find bread,

  759. not so much

  760. for myself,

  761. but for my

  762. son, Emery,

  763. because he

  764. loves to eat

  765. bread.

  766. It's sort

  767. of his

  768. staple meal

  769. for his

  770. breakfast time.

  771. But everywhere

  772. I went, it

  773. was sold out.

  774. Even 7-Eleven,

  775. 7-Eleven,

  776. they usually

  777. hike up

  778. their prices.

  779. Even 7-Eleven

  780. was sold out

  781. of bread.

  782. And this

  783. whole experience

  784. just caught

  785. me thinking,

  786. just how

  787. focused our

  788. lives are on

  789. pursuing immediate

  790. needs and

  791. desires.

  792. And it's here

  793. that Jesus

  794. says to us,

  795. do not work

  796. for the food

  797. that perishes,

  798. but for the

  799. food that

  800. endures to

  801. eternal life.

  802. Our need

  803. for physical

  804. food never

  805. ends, because

  806. no matter how

  807. much more

  808. of it we

  809. eat, it

  810. can't give

  811. us what

  812. we truly

  813. need.

  814. It can't

  815. give us

  816. that satisfaction,

  817. that eternal

  818. life.

  819. Our needs

  820. go so much

  821. deeper than

  822. that.

  823. Why are you

  824. coming to

  825. Jesus?

  826. What do you

  827. want Jesus

  828. to do for

  829. you?

  830. Our ultimate

  831. answer needs

  832. to be that

  833. Jesus, you

  834. would satisfy

  835. the longings

  836. of my heart.

  837. Our priority

  838. needs to be

  839. on that.

  840. But in a

  841. society that's

  842. so focused

  843. on material

  844. needs, it's

  845. easy for

  846. Christians to

  847. get our

  848. priorities

  849. reversed.

  850. On the

  851. outside, we

  852. might be

  853. very zealous.

  854. We might

  855. be like this

  856. Jewish crowd

  857. who's crossing

  858. the sea to

  859. find Jesus.

  860. We're so

  861. passionate to

  862. attend church,

  863. to be involved

  864. in those

  865. things.

  866. But actually

  867. our motivation

  868. is wrong.

  869. Our priorities

  870. are wrong.

  871. we're

  872. actually trying

  873. to satisfy

  874. a physical

  875. need.

  876. And when

  877. we follow

  878. Jesus like

  879. this, we

  880. don't find

  881. what we

  882. truly need.

  883. And it's

  884. here where

  885. the answer

  886. to finding

  887. satisfaction in

  888. our lives

  889. starts with

  890. repentance.

  891. It starts

  892. by turning

  893. the priority

  894. of your life

  895. away from

  896. material

  897. satisfaction

  898. towards

  899. spiritual

  900. fulfillment.

  901. you know,

  902. what are you

  903. seeking in

  904. life that

  905. has priority

  906. over

  907. satisfaction

  908. in Jesus?

  909. And are

  910. you willing

  911. to make

  912. your spiritual

  913. need your

  914. priority?

  915. Are you

  916. willing to

  917. turn away

  918. from whatever

  919. it is that's

  920. not supposed

  921. to be in

  922. that number

  923. one place

  924. and allow

  925. that goal

  926. of finding

  927. satisfaction

  928. in Jesus

  929. to become

  930. preeminent?

  931. you've got

  932. to come

  933. to Jesus

  934. with the

  935. right priorities.

  936. The second

  937. thing we

  938. need to

  939. do is

  940. to trust

  941. Jesus

  942. alone for

  943. satisfaction

  944. in life.

  945. And to

  946. help us

  947. to figure

  948. out where

  949. we are

  950. at with

  951. this point,

  952. I want us

  953. to think

  954. about where

  955. are you

  956. going for

  957. satisfaction

  958. in life?

  959. See, the

  960. Jewish people

  961. believe they

  962. have the

  963. answer to

  964. life.

  965. Their

  966. ancestors

  967. ate this

  968. supernatural

  969. bread that

  970. came from

  971. God called

  972. manna in

  973. the desert.

  974. And the

  975. Jewish people

  976. believed that

  977. they would

  978. get life,

  979. they would

  980. get what

  981. they were

  982. looking for

  983. by following

  984. the traditions

  985. of their

  986. ancestors.

  987. In verse

  988. 49, Jesus

  989. tells them

  990. that they

  991. were looking

  992. in the

  993. wrong place.

  994. Their

  995. ancestors

  996. did eat

  997. this manna

  998. in the

  999. wilderness,

  1000. but they

  1001. ended up

  1002. dying.

  1003. What the

  1004. Jewish people

  1005. sought after

  1006. couldn't give

  1007. the life

  1008. they needed.

  1009. it would

  1010. result in

  1011. death.

  1012. And it's

  1013. here that

  1014. Jesus makes

  1015. a very

  1016. exclusive

  1017. statement.

  1018. He says,

  1019. unless you

  1020. eat the

  1021. flesh of

  1022. the Son

  1023. of Man

  1024. and drink

  1025. his blood,

  1026. you have

  1027. no life.

  1028. Jesus is

  1029. saying,

  1030. there is

  1031. nothing else

  1032. out there

  1033. that can

  1034. give you

  1035. life.

  1036. The only

  1037. place you

  1038. can find

  1039. life is

  1040. in me.

  1041. Coming to

  1042. Jesus in

  1043. faith means

  1044. believing there

  1045. is no way

  1046. and no

  1047. place to

  1048. find the

  1049. satisfaction

  1050. you need.

  1051. It means

  1052. recognizing no

  1053. other pursuit

  1054. can give

  1055. you life.

  1056. It means

  1057. admitting that

  1058. if you

  1059. aren't coming

  1060. to Jesus,

  1061. you don't

  1062. have life.

  1063. The Jews

  1064. in this

  1065. passage did

  1066. not trust

  1067. Jesus alone

  1068. for satisfaction.

  1069. They weren't

  1070. able to even

  1071. see their

  1072. spiritual need.

  1073. In verse

  1074. 52, they

  1075. were confused

  1076. about what

  1077. that actually

  1078. meant and

  1079. about what

  1080. Jesus was

  1081. trying to

  1082. tell them.

  1083. They were

  1084. so focused

  1085. on their

  1086. material needs

  1087. they didn't

  1088. see their

  1089. need for

  1090. Jesus.

  1091. Trusting

  1092. Jesus starts

  1093. with admitting

  1094. your need

  1095. for Jesus.

  1096. If you're

  1097. not a

  1098. believer this

  1099. morning, the

  1100. only way you

  1101. can truly find

  1102. satisfaction in

  1103. life is by

  1104. trusting him

  1105. for it.

  1106. Pursuing

  1107. anything else

  1108. other than

  1109. Jesus might

  1110. temporarily

  1111. satisfy the

  1112. desires of

  1113. your heart,

  1114. but that

  1115. feeling is

  1116. temporary.

  1117. Like physical

  1118. bread, it

  1119. can't truly

  1120. satisfy your

  1121. spiritual hunger.

  1122. Even when

  1123. people say,

  1124. no, I'm

  1125. satisfied with

  1126. life, the

  1127. reason is

  1128. usually because

  1129. they've achieved

  1130. one goal they

  1131. were seeking

  1132. after and

  1133. they're making

  1134. good progress

  1135. at the next

  1136. goal they're

  1137. doing.

  1138. And the

  1139. pursuit, the

  1140. seeking never

  1141. stops because

  1142. our desires

  1143. aren't actually

  1144. satisfies.

  1145. Only Jesus

  1146. can permanently

  1147. satisfy us.

  1148. people say,

  1149. they're

  1150. not going to

  1151. be.

  1152. And it's

  1153. easy to

  1154. sort of

  1155. think,

  1156. you know,

  1157. the passage

  1158. here is about

  1159. unbelievers,

  1160. it's about

  1161. Jewish people,

  1162. that's not

  1163. me, maybe

  1164. it is you,

  1165. but in this

  1166. same passage,

  1167. it wasn't just

  1168. the Jewish

  1169. crowd, it

  1170. was the

  1171. disciples

  1172. themselves who

  1173. struggled with

  1174. this teaching.

  1175. People who

  1176. professed to

  1177. follow Jesus

  1178. said, this

  1179. is a hard

  1180. saying, who

  1181. can listen

  1182. to it?

  1183. The disciples

  1184. here also

  1185. found it

  1186. hard because

  1187. their hearts

  1188. were also

  1189. not in the

  1190. right place.

  1191. Where are

  1192. you going to

  1193. for satisfaction

  1194. in life?

  1195. Is it in

  1196. Jesus alone

  1197. and nothing

  1198. else?

  1199. Many times a

  1200. believer will

  1201. say, yes,

  1202. Jesus satisfies,

  1203. but in our

  1204. hearts we

  1205. don't believe

  1206. that Jesus

  1207. is all we

  1208. need for

  1209. satisfaction in

  1210. life.

  1211. Many times

  1212. we believe

  1213. to be

  1214. satisfied in

  1215. life, we

  1216. need Jesus

  1217. plus something

  1218. else.

  1219. Jesus plus

  1220. a stable

  1221. career.

  1222. Jesus plus

  1223. an ideal

  1224. family.

  1225. Jesus plus

  1226. flexibility in

  1227. work hours.

  1228. Jesus plus

  1229. enough time to

  1230. enjoy our

  1231. leisure activities.

  1232. Jesus plus

  1233. no mortgage.

  1234. When the

  1235. pursuit of

  1236. your heart

  1237. is divided

  1238. between Jesus

  1239. and something

  1240. else, you

  1241. aren't able to

  1242. receive the

  1243. spiritual

  1244. nourishment

  1245. Jesus offers

  1246. us.

  1247. Following this

  1248. Jesus plus

  1249. formula is

  1250. like drinking

  1251. down a

  1252. watered-down

  1253. protein shake

  1254. or stuffing

  1255. yourself with

  1256. junk food

  1257. before dinner.

  1258. You're not

  1259. going to get

  1260. the nutrients

  1261. you need to

  1262. really be able

  1263. to enjoy

  1264. life.

  1265. where are

  1266. you finding

  1267. satisfaction in

  1268. life in

  1269. addition to

  1270. Jesus?

  1271. Your lifestyle

  1272. reveals where

  1273. you believe you

  1274. can truly find

  1275. life.

  1276. Ask yourself,

  1277. what do you

  1278. find yourself

  1279. addicted to

  1280. recently?

  1281. what do you

  1282. find yourself

  1283. not getting

  1284. enough of?

  1285. Your answer

  1286. to these

  1287. questions may

  1288. reveal other

  1289. things that

  1290. you're seeking

  1291. in addition to

  1292. Jesus for

  1293. life.

  1294. are you

  1295. willing to

  1296. trust Jesus

  1297. enough to

  1298. put all of

  1299. that seeking

  1300. attention onto

  1301. him and him

  1302. alone?

  1303. Because

  1304. satisfaction in

  1305. life is only

  1306. found by

  1307. coming to

  1308. him.

  1309. In Jesus'

  1310. words, it's

  1311. not just good

  1312. advice, it's

  1313. not just one

  1314. way to find

  1315. satisfaction, it

  1316. is good news.

  1317. The good news

  1318. that the Son of

  1319. God has come

  1320. down to heaven

  1321. to people who

  1322. are dying in

  1323. sin to give

  1324. us his eternal

  1325. life by dying

  1326. on a cross.

  1327. satisfying the

  1328. desires of our

  1329. hearts permanently.

  1330. Whoever comes

  1331. to Jesus

  1332. shall not

  1333. hunger, whoever

  1334. believes in him

  1335. shall not

  1336. thirst.

  1337. This is such

  1338. good news to

  1339. people who are

  1340. unsatisfied and

  1341. discontent with

  1342. this life.

  1343. The question

  1344. is, do you

  1345. believe it?

  1346. This brings us

  1347. to the last

  1348. point for this

  1349. morning.

  1350. We need to

  1351. go to Jesus

  1352. again and

  1353. again.

  1354. Whoever

  1355. feeds on my

  1356. flesh and

  1357. drinks my

  1358. blood has

  1359. eternal life.

  1360. Whoever

  1361. feeds on my

  1362. flesh and

  1363. drinks my

  1364. blood abides

  1365. in me.

  1366. Jesus, in

  1367. these final

  1368. couple of

  1369. verses, tells

  1370. us two key

  1371. things.

  1372. First, he

  1373. uses this

  1374. metaphor, this

  1375. analogy of

  1376. feeding and

  1377. drinking to

  1378. help us

  1379. understand how

  1380. we're supposed

  1381. to come to

  1382. him.

  1383. Feeding and

  1384. drinking is

  1385. something you

  1386. have to

  1387. continually

  1388. do.

  1389. Jesus is

  1390. not saying

  1391. you can

  1392. just eat

  1393. of me once.

  1394. He's

  1395. saying you

  1396. need to

  1397. continually

  1398. eat of

  1399. me.

  1400. You need

  1401. to continually

  1402. come to

  1403. me in

  1404. faith.

  1405. The second

  1406. thing Jesus

  1407. tells us is

  1408. that we

  1409. have to

  1410. come to

  1411. him in

  1412. the context

  1413. of

  1414. relationship.

  1415. Those who

  1416. feed on

  1417. him, those

  1418. who come

  1419. to Jesus

  1420. abide in

  1421. him and

  1422. he in

  1423. them.

  1424. Eternal

  1425. life means

  1426. relationship

  1427. with God.

  1428. Satisfaction

  1429. of the heart

  1430. doesn't come

  1431. from just

  1432. doing things

  1433. for God.

  1434. It comes

  1435. from cultivating

  1436. a relationship

  1437. with God.

  1438. You know,

  1439. why do we

  1440. eat food

  1441. every day?

  1442. It seems

  1443. like a very

  1444. funny question

  1445. to be asking.

  1446. Well, because

  1447. you can't

  1448. live without

  1449. it.

  1450. Why do

  1451. you go to

  1452. Jesus in

  1453. faith every

  1454. day?

  1455. Well, because

  1456. we can't

  1457. truly live

  1458. without him.

  1459. going without

  1460. physical food

  1461. affects us

  1462. negatively.

  1463. When we

  1464. get so

  1465. caught up

  1466. in our

  1467. work, for

  1468. example,

  1469. that we

  1470. skip a

  1471. meal, the

  1472. effect is

  1473. we start

  1474. to feel

  1475. faint,

  1476. tired,

  1477. it's hard

  1478. to concentrate.

  1479. As our

  1480. hunger grows,

  1481. it affects

  1482. our mood,

  1483. we're more

  1484. agitated and

  1485. impatient.

  1486. The effect

  1487. is so

  1488. noticeable

  1489. that a

  1490. word has

  1491. been created

  1492. for it.

  1493. We call

  1494. this being

  1495. hangry.

  1496. Hangry.

  1497. Christian,

  1498. when you're

  1499. not going

  1500. to Jesus

  1501. to nourish

  1502. your heart,

  1503. you get

  1504. spiritually

  1505. hangry.

  1506. You become

  1507. selfish and

  1508. uncaring towards

  1509. others.

  1510. You feel

  1511. increasingly

  1512. unsatisfied and

  1513. restless with

  1514. life.

  1515. You lose

  1516. self-control

  1517. and give

  1518. in to past

  1519. addictions to

  1520. fill that

  1521. void.

  1522. Life feels

  1523. tiresome.

  1524. Ministry

  1525. feels

  1526. burdensome.

  1527. But the

  1528. good news

  1529. of the

  1530. gospel is

  1531. that you

  1532. have this

  1533. relationship

  1534. with Jesus

  1535. and you

  1536. don't have

  1537. to stay

  1538. this way

  1539. for one

  1540. second

  1541. longer.

  1542. Christ

  1543. abides in

  1544. you.

  1545. He wants

  1546. to satisfy

  1547. your hungry

  1548. heart with

  1549. his glory.

  1550. So much

  1551. that you're

  1552. unable to

  1553. stop loving

  1554. others.

  1555. Where you

  1556. feel so

  1557. satisfied,

  1558. life is

  1559. enjoyable in

  1560. any situation.

  1561. where you're

  1562. so content

  1563. you don't

  1564. feel a need

  1565. to indulge

  1566. in other

  1567. things.

  1568. Where your

  1569. heart is

  1570. so nourished

  1571. that you're

  1572. energized to

  1573. serve others

  1574. and tackle

  1575. whatever challenges

  1576. come in

  1577. life.

  1578. The question

  1579. is, are

  1580. you willing

  1581. to go to

  1582. Jesus in

  1583. faith again,

  1584. right here

  1585. and right

  1586. now?

  1587. Do you

  1588. believe Jesus

  1589. is the

  1590. bread of

  1591. life that

  1592. God the

  1593. Father has

  1594. sent into

  1595. the world?

  1596. Do you

  1597. believe it's

  1598. found in

  1599. him and

  1600. in him

  1601. alone?

  1602. The

  1603. Apostle

  1604. Paul describes

  1605. his experience

  1606. of finding

  1607. satisfaction in

  1608. Jesus like

  1609. this in

  1610. Philippians.

  1611. I know

  1612. what it is

  1613. to be in

  1614. need and

  1615. I know

  1616. what it is

  1617. to have

  1618. plenty.

  1619. I have

  1620. learned the

  1621. secret of

  1622. being content

  1623. in any

  1624. and every

  1625. situation.

  1626. Whether

  1627. well-fed

  1628. or hungry,

  1629. whether

  1630. living in

  1631. plenty or

  1632. in want,

  1633. I can

  1634. do all

  1635. things

  1636. through

  1637. him who

  1638. gives me

  1639. strength.

  1640. This is

  1641. the life

  1642. that's

  1643. available to

  1644. all who

  1645. believe in

  1646. Jesus and

  1647. continue to

  1648. come to

  1649. him in

  1650. faith.

  1651. Something

  1652. that I

  1653. know a

  1654. lot of

  1655. churches are

  1656. doing during

  1657. this time

  1658. of Lent is

  1659. finding time

  1660. to pray

  1661. together each

  1662. day.

  1663. It's

  1664. something that

  1665. EEC has

  1666. been doing

  1667. and our

  1668. prayer time

  1669. is every

  1670. night from

  1671. 830 to

  1672. 845.

  1673. The purpose

  1674. behind this

  1675. was actually

  1676. to encourage

  1677. the church

  1678. in this

  1679. time when

  1680. we're

  1681. separated

  1682. from each

  1683. other

  1684. physically

  1685. to go

  1686. to Jesus

  1687. in faith.

  1688. In my

  1689. mind,

  1690. I knew

  1691. it was

  1692. a good

  1693. thing to

  1694. do.

  1695. It was

  1696. myself and

  1697. the rest

  1698. of the

  1699. leaders who

  1700. came up

  1701. with this

  1702. initiative.

  1703. things

  1704. go as

  1705. planned

  1706. when it

  1707. comes to

  1708. your real

  1709. life

  1710. situations.

  1711. There's

  1712. a couple

  1713. of nights

  1714. where it's

  1715. almost

  1716. 830

  1717. and I'm

  1718. just

  1719. completely

  1720. exhausted.

  1721. My son

  1722. Emory isn't

  1723. having a

  1724. good night.

  1725. He's been

  1726. crying for

  1727. a good

  1728. hour and

  1729. I just

  1730. calmed him

  1731. down.

  1732. My wife

  1733. Evelyn,

  1734. who's

  1735. pregnant with

  1736. our second

  1737. kid,

  1738. is having

  1739. a bit

  1740. of trouble

  1741. with the

  1742. second

  1743. one.

  1744. It's a

  1745. bit more

  1746. painful for

  1747. her.

  1748. She's

  1749. incapacitated

  1750. sometimes at

  1751. night.

  1752. I'm expending

  1753. energy doing

  1754. a lot of

  1755. the house

  1756. work.

  1757. It's five

  1758. minutes before

  1759. 830 and

  1760. I'm just

  1761. thanking God.

  1762. I don't

  1763. have any

  1764. mental or

  1765. physical

  1766. energy to

  1767. do anything

  1768. right now.

  1769. I just

  1770. want to

  1771. sit in

  1772. my couch

  1773. and do

  1774. nothing.

  1775. In that

  1776. moment,

  1777. I just

  1778. felt the

  1779. Holy Spirit

  1780. encouraging

  1781. me.

  1782. Do you

  1783. trust that

  1784. if you

  1785. come to

  1786. me in

  1787. faith,

  1788. right here

  1789. and right

  1790. now,

  1791. I'll be

  1792. able to

  1793. give you

  1794. what you

  1795. need?

  1796. I found

  1797. that as

  1798. I've chosen

  1799. to trust

  1800. Jesus,

  1801. he's been

  1802. faithful each

  1803. night to

  1804. encourage my

  1805. heart in

  1806. just the

  1807. right way.

  1808. I don't

  1809. come out

  1810. of every

  1811. prayer time

  1812. feeling like

  1813. I'm 100%

  1814. recharged

  1815. physically.

  1816. I don't

  1817. have to

  1818. sleep for

  1819. the rest

  1820. of the

  1821. night.

  1822. Sometimes

  1823. I do

  1824. feel better

  1825. physically,

  1826. but sometimes

  1827. I feel more

  1828. tired than

  1829. before.

  1830. It's later

  1831. on in the

  1832. night.

  1833. But I've

  1834. never once

  1835. regretted

  1836. deciding to

  1837. trust Jesus

  1838. enough to

  1839. seek him

  1840. in prayer.

  1841. In fact,

  1842. most of

  1843. the time,

  1844. I regret

  1845. not doing

  1846. so sooner

  1847. because the

  1848. satisfaction

  1849. that he

  1850. offers to

  1851. my heart

  1852. is well

  1853. worth the

  1854. sacrifice of

  1855. my physical

  1856. energy because

  1857. that's what I

  1858. truly need.

  1859. Now, if

  1860. you're hearing

  1861. my sharing

  1862. and you're

  1863. feeling guilty

  1864. for not

  1865. praying,

  1866. then you've

  1867. missed the

  1868. point.

  1869. I'm not

  1870. trying to

  1871. make you

  1872. feel guilty

  1873. to pray

  1874. more to

  1875. Jesus or

  1876. to join the

  1877. prayer meeting

  1878. that's coming

  1879. up on

  1880. Thursday.

  1881. What I'm

  1882. trying to

  1883. say is

  1884. that Jesus

  1885. has this

  1886. free five

  1887. star all

  1888. you can

  1889. eat spiritual

  1890. buffet that's

  1891. open 24-7

  1892. for us

  1893. to enjoy

  1894. for as

  1895. long as

  1896. we want.

  1897. I've been

  1898. going with

  1899. my church

  1900. community and

  1901. it's been

  1902. great and

  1903. I encourage

  1904. you guys to

  1905. go and

  1906. just feast on

  1907. Jesus with

  1908. your spiritual

  1909. community as

  1910. well at

  1911. Watermark.

  1912. We're living

  1913. in a city

  1914. that's filled

  1915. with people

  1916. who are

  1917. increasingly

  1918. unsatisfied

  1919. and I just

  1920. want to

  1921. challenge you

  1922. guys as a

  1923. church.

  1924. What impact

  1925. would you guys

  1926. have if you

  1927. lived fully

  1928. satisfied in

  1929. Jesus?

  1930. So satisfied

  1931. that you're

  1932. thinking about

  1933. serving those

  1934. around you.

  1935. So content

  1936. that people

  1937. can't help

  1938. but notice

  1939. and ask

  1940. what's your

  1941. secret to

  1942. being so

  1943. content about

  1944. life in

  1945. Hong Kong

  1946. right now?

  1947. So I just

  1948. want us to

  1949. enter into a

  1950. time of

  1951. reflection.

  1952. I just want

  1953. us to think

  1954. about two

  1955. questions.

  1956. Why are

  1957. you coming

  1958. to Jesus?

  1959. where are

  1960. you going

  1961. to find

  1962. satisfaction

  1963. apart from

  1964. Jesus?

  1965. To maybe

  1966. help you

  1967. think about

  1968. this more

  1969. concretely,

  1970. why are

  1971. you on

  1972. the Zoom

  1973. this morning?

  1974. And after

  1975. you log

  1976. off from

  1977. this Zoom,

  1978. what are

  1979. your plans

  1980. for the

  1981. rest of

  1982. the day?

  1983. What are

  1984. the plans

  1985. for the

  1986. rest of

  1987. the week?

  1988. I'm just

  1989. going to

  1990. open us

  1991. in a time

  1992. of prayer

  1993. as we

  1994. reflect.

  1995. Holy Spirit,

  1996. would you

  1997. speak to

  1998. our hearts?

  1999. Would you

  2000. take this

  2001. truth that

  2002. we've been

  2003. reading about

  2004. and trying to

  2005. understand more

  2006. and would you

  2007. apply to our

  2008. hearts right

  2009. here and

  2010. right now?

  2011. Holy Spirit,

  2012. would you

  2013. just come?

  2014. encourage everyone

  2015. to just

  2016. close your

  2017. eyes and

  2018. to know

  2019. that Christ

  2020. abides in

  2021. you.

  2022. And he's

  2023. speaking to

  2024. you right

  2025. here and

  2026. right now.

  2027. Let's just

  2028. take a moment

  2029. to listen

  2030. to listen to

  2031. what he

  2032. has to say

  2033. to us.

  2034. everyone

  2035. can

  2036. hear

  2037. ikit

  2038. there

  2039. could

  2040. be

  2041. совет

  2042. about

  2043. positive

  2044. and

  2045. for

  2046. p

2047. Holy Spirit, I just pray that as you speak to us, God, that your voice become clearer and clearer.

2048. I just pray that you would just move us, Lord, to turn our hearts fully to you.

2049. I pray that each of us would experience in a deeper way just how much you are able to satisfy our hearts and that we would want more of that in our life.

2050. Lord, we thank you and we just pray these things in your name. Amen.
