  1. Father, our hearts, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they rest in you.

  2. We ask, Father, we give you thanks and praise that you are the end of our longings and our yearnings,

  3. that the deepest longings and yearnings of our life find their rest and their true home in you.

  4. We ask, Father, that at this time, as we gather around your word,

  5. that your word would speak very deeply into our hearts,

  6. and that we might know who Jesus is, and that we might rejoice in the grace that he gives,

  7. and we might respond this morning to the grace he offers us even today in a way which is worthy of that grace and good for us.

  8. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. I did a funeral yesterday the first time. Is this working right? Am I fine? Okay.

  11. It's just weird to be on one side of the speakers sometimes.

  12. Anyway, I did a funeral yesterday, the first funeral in quite a while, actually,

  13. and St. Peter's and St. Paul's church graciously allowed us to use their facilities for the funeral.

  14. And I know we all can differ on this, but gosh, it was nice to be in a church.

  15. Like, it was just, it was so nice to just be in a place which is designed for Christians to worship.

  16. And I know it might seem fuddy-duddy to a lot,

  17. and a lot of churches nowadays actually just look like a theater,

  18. only, you know, the front would just be all beige,

  19. not even necessarily a cross, but it was just really nice to be in a church.

  20. On the other hand, I was thinking that there is something to be said about worshiping where we are.

  21. I know that people who are watching this online who've never been to the Ottawa Little Theatre,

  22. when they see the band, they get a bit of a sense of the whole set.

  23. But there is something to be said about worshiping in a set that looks like where we live.

  24. To remind us that the Christian life is just not to be one perpetual church service,

  25. or to live a type of oil and water life,

  26. where we live one way when we're sort of in a churchy type of environment,

  27. and another way when we leave the churchy environment,

  28. which is basically all of the rest of our life and our time.

  29. There is something to be said about reminding us of this all the time,

  30. to have a place to worship like we do.

  31. I just finished watching an HBO series called Perry Mason.

  32. I'm not necessarily giving any recommendation for it.

  33. But one of the things in that show,

  34. it was set in the 30s in Los Angeles,

  35. is sort of what was driving it was a murder connected to a church.

  36. And of course, as the thing goes on, there's a great disconnect.

  37. Lots of the church people act one way when they're in church,

  38. but the fact of the matter is there's shady business deals

  39. and crooked business deals going on the rest of the time with their life,

  40. and there's this fundamental disconnect to the church life

  41. and to the rest of life.

  42. So there is something to be said for worshiping in a place like this,

  43. where the set is a person, a writer, I think in the 50s,

  44. obsessed with death, which is why it says,

  45. West of the Dead, Cold Secrets, Dark Garden, Five Down, etc., etc.

  46. The two stories that we're going to look at today in the gospel,

  47. they throw before us a bit of a challenge,

  48. because you see, what often happens to us unconsciously

  49. is that, you know, I say that it's important to live our life and all that,

  50. and we all go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  51. But the problem is, often when we read the Bible, we forget that,

  52. and we read the Bible text purely from a churchy point of view,

  53. not from how you live your life 24-7, 365 days of the year point of view.

  54. And so one of the things that we're going to do today is,

  55. when we look at it, is I'm going to try to push us

  56. to see how that connects to the rest of life.

  57. So let's look at the text.

  58. It would be a great help.

  59. That's, I was on the wrong page of my notes,

  60. is why they didn't look right.

  61. Turn with me to Mark chapter 2, verses 18 to 28,

    Mark 2:18–28

  62. which is the text that we're going to look at today,

  63. two different stories of this ancient biography of Jesus.

  64. And it begins like this.

  65. Now, John, just, actually, here's just a little tiny bit of a timeout,

  66. bit of note.

  67. You know, sometimes you'll talk to people, and they'll say,

  68. well, one of the reasons we can't trust the Bible

  69. is that it's filled with, you know, the textual tradition.

  70. You know, from the original manuscript today,

  71. there's all these errors in it.

  72. And they can count.

  73. I don't know.

  74. Like, there's millions of them.

  75. But what they don't tell you when they tell you things like this

  76. is that, in fact, most of those supposed errors

  77. are not errors at all.

  78. They're doing what I just, I'm about to do.

  79. So, for instance, I'm about to read this.

  80. Now, John the Baptist's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.

  81. And if you look at your Bibles, if you're following along

  82. and you see it up there, you'll see it doesn't say John the Baptist.

  83. Now, the John is referring to John the Baptist,

  84. but what I've just done is I've clarified it for people

  85. who aren't very, very, very, very familiar with the Bible.

  86. And if they're not very familiar with the Bible and they see John,

  87. they might wonder, is it, like, the disciple John?

  88. Or, like, who is it, right?

  89. So I've just clarified it.

  90. And none of you listening to me would say

  91. that I've now made the text untrustworthy.

  92. I've just tried to help you.

  93. And that's the same type of thing that actually goes on

  94. in some of the scribal things,

  95. is one of the things that happens in the original text,

  96. which would never pass a modern editor,

  97. is it goes he, he, he, he, he, he.

  98. I'm not giggling, but he said, he said, he said, he said, he said.

  99. It's a long, long string of he's.

  100. And if you're just listening,

  101. you can forget, okay, one moment, who said that?

  102. Which he is it?

  103. Is it Jesus or the other person?

  104. And so sometimes the scribes will just,

  105. rather than having the word he, they'll put in Jesus.

  106. But nobody reading that would say that that's an error in the text.

  107. Like, not really.

  108. Anyway, that's just a bit of an aside.

  109. So I'm going to, in a sense, cheat a little bit as I read it

  110. to help you to understand.

  111. But here's how it goes.

  112. Verse 18.

  113. Now, John the Baptist's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting,

  114. and people came and said to Jesus,

  115. why did John the Baptist's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast,

  116. but your disciples do not fast?

  117. Now, just sort of pause there for a second.

  118. Fasting is a deeply religious practice.

  119. Buddhists fast.

  120. Muslims fast.

  121. Hindus have times of fasting.

  122. It is a characteristic of religion and spirituality

  123. that there are times of fasting.

  124. And so one of the things which is going on here in the text

  125. is that the Pharisees are trying to figure out what's going on with Jesus

  126. because obviously he's, like, spiritual or religious.

  127. Like, that's obviously the case.

  128. He has a type of authority about him, but he doesn't fast.

  129. Fast.

  130. And his disciples don't fast.

  131. So they're trying, in a sense, they just use from the normal,

  132. in a sense, the normal human mind

  133. and the way the normal average human mind

  134. evaluates religious and spiritual things

  135. and things like fasting are part of it,

  136. and Jesus doesn't seem to be doing it,

  137. and they're trying to sort out and figure out what's going on,

  138. who is he?

  139. They're trying to, in a sense, put Jesus in their categories

  140. and their criteria,

  141. which they, in a sense, say,

  142. my categories and criteria,

  143. that's what reasonable people understand,

  144. and you need to fit into that.

  145. At the end of the day, of course,

  146. when Jesus rises from the dead,

  147. what partly is happening

  148. is that all human categories

  149. and criteria for religion get blown up.

  150. But that's sort of towards the end of the story.

  151. And part of, actually,

  152. the history of renewal and reformation movements

  153. within the Christian movement

  154. is that we start to sink into religion

  155. and fitting into the criteria

  156. of the way the mind normally works,

  157. and God, by his Holy Spirit,

  158. brings us back to the Scripture,

  159. and we realize we've got to throw that stuff out,

  160. that we've got our criteria all wrong.

  161. But that's what they're doing.

  162. It's a very...

  163. In fact, actually, a few years ago,

  164. just a few years ago,

  165. I read an article by a Muslim fellow,

  166. and one of the reasons he said

  167. that Islam is superior to Christianity

  168. is that most Christians hardly ever fast.

  169. But Muslims fast for Ramadan,

  170. and that was, in fact,

  171. a sign of the superiority of Islam

  172. over Christianity.

  173. So they're asking this question

  174. out of this in a sense

  175. that the normal way a human mind works

  176. and tries to evaluate things.

  177. In verse 19, let's see how Jesus answers them.

  178. And he only gives them a bit of a partial answer,

  179. by the way.

  180. Anyway, let's look at it.

  181. And Jesus...

  182. Actually, he gives them

  183. the wisest answer in the world.

  184. He doesn't answer all of our questions

  185. with this text,

  186. but he gives them the wisest answer in the world.

  187. Verse 19,

  188. And Jesus said to them,

  189. Can the wedding guests fast

  190. while the bridegroom is with them?

  191. As long as they have the bridegroom with them,

  192. they cannot fast.

  193. Now, a couple of things going on here.

  194. First of all,

  195. if you don't know anything

  196. about the custom of the time,

  197. this will be very helpful for you.

  198. In our day and age,

  199. when you have a wedding,

  200. and then afterwards,

  201. you might have a reception

  202. or maybe a breakfast the next day

  203. or both or something like that.

  204. But that would be it.

  205. But in the Jewish culture of the time,

  206. if it was a man and a woman

  207. marrying each for the first time,

  208. the wedding celebration went for seven days.

  209. So it was seven days

  210. of eating lots and lots and lots

  211. of skewered goat and chicken

  212. and having fish

  213. and eating baklava

  214. and drinking wine

  215. and just seven days of feasting.

  216. Okay?

  217. It sort of...

  218. And so it makes a lot of sense

  219. that if you're actually in there

  220. with the bridegroom,

  221. you don't fast during that time.

  222. I was thinking nowadays,

  223. modern couples,

  224. what we do is we fast

  225. and try to lose weight

  226. before the wedding

  227. so we look good in our wedding dress

  228. or in our suit or whatever

  229. so we look really good

  230. on our wedding day.

  231. But, you know,

  232. that's one type of fasting.

  233. But you wouldn't fast at all.

  234. And the other thing about this

  235. that's going on here,

  236. which isn't obvious to us

  237. as we read it

  238. because we're not that familiar

  239. with the Old Testament

  240. or we forget,

  241. is that Jesus is making

  242. a claim to deity.

  243. He's actually saying he's God.

  244. Now, one of the constant images

  245. in what we call the Old Testament

  246. and our Jewish friends

  247. call the Torah or the Tanakh

  248. is that, in a sense,

  249. God is the husband

  250. of the covenant people Israel.

  251. Some of you might remember

  252. when we went through

  253. the book of Lamentations,

  254. where, in a sense,

  255. Lamentations tackled me.

  256. I don't know if it tackled you,

  257. but it definitely tackled me.

  258. And there was this constant refrain

  259. about adultery.

  260. And if you're familiar at all

  261. with the prophetic literature

  262. in the Old Testament,

  263. there's always this claim

  264. of Israel being adulterers,

  265. that they're cheating

  266. on their true husband.

  267. And so that's all part

  268. of this very powerful imagery

  269. in the Old Testament,

  270. that God, in a sense,

  271. he's not the husband

  272. of each individual believer.

  273. He's a husband, in a sense,

  274. of the covenant people

  275. of Israel as a whole,

  276. who are his bride.

  277. He is the bridegroom.

  278. Israel is his bride.

  279. So when Jesus here

  280. is using the analogy

  281. of why they're not fasting,

  282. which we'll see,

  283. look what he says in,

  284. yeah, what he says

  285. very specifically,

  286. they cannot fast.

  287. Look at verse 20.

  288. The days will come

  289. when the bridegroom

  290. is taken away from them

  291. and then they will fast

  292. in that day.

  293. He's making a claim of deity,

  294. that the Old Testament image

  295. of the bridegroom,

  296. that's Jesus.

  297. Why are they not fasting?

  298. The bridegroom's right here,

  299. right now.

  300. You know that bridegroom

  301. you read about all the way

  302. from Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  303. to the end of Malachi?

  304. He's standing right here.

  305. That's what Jesus is saying.

  306. And he's also actually

  307. making a reference

  308. to his death.

  309. Look again at what he says

  310. in verse 20.

  311. The days will come

  312. when the bridegroom

  313. is taken away from them

  314. and then they will fast

  315. in that day.

  316. This is the first time

  317. in the gospel

  318. that an allusion,

  319. a pointing head

  320. to his death

  321. is evident.

  322. I don't know how many of you

  323. have watched Fahuda

  324. and I'm not necessarily

  325. recommending it.

  326. It's an Israeli series

  327. and in that Israeli series,

  328. I think it's the very first episode,

  329. it's not a spoiler alert,

  330. I think it's in the very first episode,

  331. there's a Mossad operation

  332. in the West Bank

  333. in Palestinian-controlled territories

  334. and in the process

  335. of that event,

  336. it all goes upside down,

  337. sideways, inside out.

  338. It just goes in a disastrous direction

  339. and what happens

  340. is that they end up

  341. killing a man

  342. in the wedding ceremony.

  343. They kill the groom

  344. and that fuels

  345. all of the chaos

  346. and the terror

  347. that goes on

  348. for the rest of it

  349. because it's such a huge offense

  350. for the groom

  351. to be killed.

  352. And we know

  353. that if there was a shooting

  354. at a wedding,

  355. it would be in the news.

  356. It wouldn't matter

  357. if it was in New Mexico

  358. or if it was in the Bronx,

  359. it would be in the news.

  360. And so Jesus says

  361. this very, very puzzling thing.

  362. He's saying two types of things

  363. which would have just

  364. very puzzled them very deeply.

  365. On the first hand,

  366. he's saying,

  367. I'm the bridegroom.

  368. The second hand,

  369. he said,

  370. the bridegroom's going to die.

  371. The bridegroom's going to be taken away.

  372. And then he goes on in verse 21.

  373. I'm going to sort of

  374. just tell you a little bit

  375. about the significance of that.

  376. In 21,

  377. though he says,

  378. no one sews a piece

  379. of unshrunk cloth

  380. on an old garment.

  381. Actually,

  382. that's not entirely

  383. true if you're a clueless

  384. 16-year-old male

  385. like I was.

  386. And it was cool

  387. to have jeans

  388. that were ripped

  389. and to make patches,

  390. put sew patches on it.

  391. I didn't know that

  392. because I was a clueless

  393. 16-year-old male.

  394. I thought you could put

  395. fresh cloth

  396. in old jeans.

  397. But generally,

  398. people who are wise

  399. would understand,

  400. verse 16,

  401. no one sews a piece

  402. of unshrunk cloth

  403. on an old garment.

  404. If he does,

  405. the patch tears away from it,

  406. the new from the old,

  407. and the worst tear is made.

  408. And no one puts new wine

  409. into old wineskins.

  410. If he does,

  411. the wine will burst the skins

  412. and the wine is destroyed.

  413. And so are the skins,

  414. but new wine

  415. is for fresh wineskins.

  416. And that particular image,

  417. back in the day,

  418. they would use,

  419. obviously,

  420. they'd been cured a bit.

  421. They'd use animal skins.

  422. They'd put the new wine

  423. in there.

  424. There'd be still

  425. some fermentation

  426. that would expand.

  427. And because it was a skin thing

  428. and it had some flexibility,

  429. it would grow.

  430. And that's the high image.

  431. But here's the thing.

  432. When Jesus says,

  433. you don't put a new patch

  434. on an old garment

  435. and you don't put new wine

  436. into new wineskins,

  437. what he's not doing,

  438. what he's not saying,

  439. is what you normally hear

  440. from evangelical churches.

  441. He's not giving

  442. a consumerist understanding,

  443. hyper-modern understanding

  444. of the Christian faith.

  445. He's not saying,

  446. you take from this,

  447. by the way,

  448. boys and girls,

  449. men and women,

  450. that we should always

  451. embrace the new.

  452. You know,

  453. there's a new thing happening.

  454. It involves smoke machines

  455. and lasers

  456. and you can't put that

  457. with the old thing.

  458. You've got to get

  459. with the new.

  460. He's not saying

  461. that you have to do

  462. as in consumerism,

  463. that you have to always

  464. buy the latest stuff

  465. and you always have to get

  466. on board with

  467. the latest trend.

  468. He's not saying

  469. that at all.

  470. You can't use the text

  471. to justify consumerism

  472. or hyper-modernity.

  473. What he's just saying

  474. is that God is doing

  475. something very,

  476. very, very different,

  477. very, very shocking

  478. and he's doing it

  479. in the person of Jesus

  480. that there's this

  481. profound mystery

  482. that the bridegroom

  483. has come

  484. and the bridegroom

  485. is going to die

  486. and the bridegroom

  487. is going to die

  488. and that is how

  489. all of these separate texts,

  490. all of these texts

  491. that on one hand

  492. have the image

  493. in the Old Testament

  494. of the bridegroom

  495. and his bride

  496. and all of these

  497. other images

  498. of the unfaithful bride.

  499. It's not putting down woman

  500. because it's talking

  501. about Israel.

  502. It's talking about

  503. the covenant people

  504. and all of these things

  505. about how they've become defiled

  506. and they're broken

  507. and they're enslaved

  508. and they've ruined

  509. their entire lives

  510. and all of these texts

  511. that talk about

  512. the bridegroom

  513. and the bride,

  514. it's the death

  515. of the bridegroom

  516. that is going

  517. to make the bride

  518. beautiful

  519. and going to make

  520. the bride free

  521. and it's all done

  522. out of love.

  523. That God is making

  524. a new covenant people.

  525. He's making

  526. a new covenant

  527. that emerges

  528. out of the bridegroom

  529. having been present

  530. and out of in love

  531. dying to make

  532. a bride

  533. who is beautiful.

  534. See, this is

  535. one of the reasons

  536. why

  537. if you have

  538. Jewish Christians

  539. and then if you have

  540. Nigerian Christians

  541. and you have

  542. Scottish Christians

  543. and you can add

  544. a few other things.

  545. On one level,

  546. if you spend time

  547. with them,

  548. you know that they're

  549. your brother and sister

  550. in Christ.

  551. But the way they live

  552. and the way they worship

  553. might be very,

  554. very, very different.

  555. Because there's

  556. a new covenant

  557. and this new covenant

  558. is for people

  559. of every people group

  560. on the planet.

  561. And it's not that

  562. we all have to follow

  563. the Jewish laws

  564. or anything like that.

  565. God is doing

  566. a new type of thing

  567. where we're made

  568. right with God

  569. by what it is

  570. the bridegroom has done

  571. to die for the bride

  572. that we receive

  573. by faith.

  574. Some of you might remember

  575. there's quite a few years ago

  576. we had a Nigerian priest

  577. with us for three

  578. or four years.

  579. And on the final Sunday

  580. that he was going

  581. to be with us,

  582. he asked if he could

  583. do a Nigerian

  584. Anglican service

  585. for us.

  586. And I don't know

  587. how many of you

  588. were here for that

  589. and might remember it.

  590. But at the hour

  591. and three quarter mark

  592. we hadn't hit communion yet

  593. by the way.

  594. But he realized

  595. that he was in Canada

  596. and he had to stop

  597. and he apologized.

  598. But one of the things

  599. he announced to everybody

  600. he said

  601. and I was sort of

  602. a bit prepared for it

  603. he said

  604. by the way

  605. in Nigeria

  606. we don't pass the plate

  607. for collection

  608. the collection plate

  609. is right on the front

  610. of the Lord's table

  611. and we all sing

  612. and we give our offering

  613. by clapping

  614. and singing

  615. and dancing

  616. down the aisle

  617. to put in your offering.

  618. And he said

  619. so that's what we're

  620. going to do

  621. the band

  622. Jono might have been

  623. I don't know

  624. you weren't the worshiper

  625. and so he said

  626. the band's all prepared

  627. we're going to sing

  628. this long piece

  629. that's what we're going to do

  630. and by the way

  631. the rector is going

  632. to lead the dance.

  633. And I was gobsmacked

  634. I think

  635. whoa he didn't tell me

  636. that I had to lead the dance.

  637. So yeah I know

  638. you should laugh

  639. I'm terrified of dancing

  640. by the way

  641. I only dance

  642. if there's absolutely

  643. nobody in the house

  644. and the blinds are drawn

  645. like then I might dance

  646. to some music

  647. and so I'm like

  648. I guess

  649. there's these two people

  650. in the church at the time

  651. and they could tell

  652. that I was the deer

  653. caught in the headlights

  654. and I was frozen

  655. and so it was very funny

  656. if we'd been filming it

  657. these two people

  658. it was Kendra and Guy

  659. one Kendra comes

  660. and grabs one arm

  661. Guy grabs the other arm

  662. and they do all the dancing

  663. as they drag me down the aisle

  664. and then the rest

  665. of the congregation

  666. come and you know

  667. do the little waving

  668. and wiggling

  669. and anyway

  670. you see

  671. but the point is this

  672. the point of it all

  673. is this

  674. is that when they're

  675. talking about

  676. they're doing a new thing

  677. that's the new thing

  678. which is being referred to

  679. not hyper modernity

  680. not having lasers

  681. nothing wrong with lasers

  682. and smoke machines per se

  683. right

  684. if that's how

  685. people are going to

  686. worship and enter God

  687. that in a sense is fine

  688. but it's not encouraging us

  689. to be consumers

  690. of spiritual products

  691. it's talking about

  692. the fact that God

  693. in the person of his son

  694. is doing something

  695. radically

  696. radically different

  697. now

  698. it sounds as if

  699. all I've done

  700. is talk about church

  701. but here's the thing

  702. that's going on

  703. within the story

  704. that starts to talk to us

  705. a little bit beyond

  706. what's going on in church

  707. we have different intuitions

  708. or clues

  709. human beings in general

  710. when they're reflective

  711. human beings have

  712. different intuitions

  713. or clues

  714. that there's something more

  715. that there's something

  716. transcendent

  717. that there's something

  718. bigger

  719. that it's not just

  720. you eat

  721. you eat

  722. you eat

  723. you work

  724. you work

  725. you work

  726. you sleep

  727. you sleep

  728. you sleep

  729. you buy

  730. you know

  731. and whatever

  732. and you just do this

  733. one thing after another

  734. but at different times

  735. some people have it a lot

  736. some people

  737. it's only occasionally

  738. we have these different

  739. types of intuitions

  740. or moments

  741. that there's something more

  742. and there's lots of

  743. different categories of that

  744. and in this image here

  745. we have

  746. two of those intuitions

  747. are directly addressed

  748. and the first intuition

  749. is

  750. that people have

  751. if they think about it

  752. is that there's something

  753. broken with the world

  754. there's something broken

  755. with the world

  756. I did a funeral yesterday

  757. and

  758. it was a very fine man

  759. who died

  760. he'd had Parkinson's

  761. for a very very very long time

  762. and by the time he died

  763. for actually

  764. for quite a few years

  765. before he died

  766. the Parkinson's

  767. had really ravished him

  768. he was a strong

  769. handsome man

  770. but long before his death

  771. he was completely

  772. and utterly

  773. curled into himself

  774. his whole body

  775. was in a sense

  776. just one

  777. almost like a ball

  778. because the Parkinson's

  779. had ravished it

  780. and a man

  781. who was

  782. intellectually

  783. very very brilliant

  784. his mind

  785. had become

  786. increasingly fuzzy

  787. and

  788. you know

  789. those of you

  790. who are doctors

  791. or nurses

  792. or those of you

  793. who have a profession

  794. where you deal with people

  795. or those of you

  796. who have family members

  797. in situations like that

  798. when you look at them

  799. you say to yourself

  800. there's something

  801. broken with the world

  802. there's something

  803. broken with the world

  804. and this

  805. this story

  806. talks directly

  807. about that intuition

  808. why is it

  809. that the bridegroom

  810. has come

  811. and the bridegroom

  812. is going to die

  813. why is it

  814. there's something

  815. which would be

  816. so shocking

  817. if it happened

  818. and we knew

  819. that it was a bridegroom

  820. dying

  821. that it would be

  822. in the news

  823. the bridegroom

  824. dies

  825. because there's

  826. something broken

  827. with the world

  828. that only God

  829. can fix

  830. and that goes

  831. to in a sense

  832. the second

  833. one of the second

  834. a second type

  835. of intuition

  836. that we have

  837. and the second

  838. type of intuition

  839. that people have

  840. is that love

  841. is stronger

  842. than death

  843. now that defies

  844. all reason

  845. by the way

  846. scientifically

  847. it's not true

  848. scientifically

  849. there is just

  850. one thing

  851. after another

  852. thing

  853. after another

  854. thing

  855. and death

  856. is just

  857. one of those

  858. things

  859. that birth

  860. is no more

  861. natural

  862. than death

  863. they're both

  864. just natural

  865. processes

  866. maturing

  867. is a natural

  868. process

  869. having Parkinson's

  870. is a natural

  871. process

  872. and I guess

  873. they'd say

  874. that falling

  875. in love

  876. or whatever

  877. that means

  878. having the

  879. attraction

  880. of one

  881. of a male

  882. to a female

  883. so that there

  884. can be procreation

  885. that's part

  886. of a natural

  887. process

  888. you can add

  889. words like love

  890. and meaning

  891. and significance

  892. to it

  893. but it's just

  894. a natural

  895. process

  896. but when we

  897. see that

  898. we say

  899. no no no

  900. no no

  901. no

  902. we have

  903. this intuition

  904. this clue

  905. that love

  906. is stronger

  907. than death

  908. that justice

  909. is stronger

  910. than injustice

  911. that goodness

  912. is stronger

  913. than evil

  914. that mercy

  915. is stronger

  916. than self

  917. centered

  918. vengeance

  919. and getting

  920. even

  921. and here

  922. we see this

  923. being directly

  924. addressed as well

  925. because the image

  926. that Jesus uses

  927. for himself

  928. is the image

  929. of the bridegroom

  930. the image

  931. that

  932. though

  933. in a sense

  934. what he's saying

  935. for those who want

  936. to try to pay

  937. attention to it

  938. is that your image

  939. your intuition

  940. your sense

  941. that when you look

  942. at something

  943. like Christine

  944. and Michael

  945. that was the couple

  946. and the man died

  947. and Christine lived

  948. and when you look

  949. at their pictures

  950. and see the love

  951. that surely

  952. that surely

  953. surely

  954. surely

  955. love is stronger

  956. than death

  957. and Jesus

  958. is saying

  959. you know what

  960. that intuition

  961. it's true

  962. because the way

  963. to understand

  964. God

  965. and the world

  966. and creation

  967. is that of

  968. between the bride

  969. groom and the bride

  970. now

  971. the next

  972. story

  973. goes even deeper

  974. and it actually

  975. goes in a deeper

  976. way than at first

  977. if you think about it

  978. it's a bit disturbing

  979. but you actually

  980. realize what profound

  981. good news it is

  982. because it's going

  983. to talk about

  984. a different class

  985. of intuitions

  986. that we have

  987. look what happens

  988. in verse 23

  989. and 24

  990. one Sabbath

  991. Jesus was going

  992. through the grain fields

  993. and as they made

  994. their way

  995. his disciples

  996. began to pluck

  997. heads of grain

  998. and the Pharisees

  999. were saying to him

  1000. look

  1001. why are they doing

  1002. what is not lawful

  1003. on the Sabbath

  1004. now just sort of

  1005. pause

  1006. most of us

  1007. don't know this

  1008. when we read

  1009. the Old Testament

  1010. where if we do

  1011. we forget

  1012. but in fact

  1013. what the Pharisees

  1014. are saying

  1015. is not correct

  1016. what the Old Testament

  1017. what the Old Testament

  1018. does

  1019. is it provides

  1020. remedy

  1021. and help

  1022. for the poor

  1023. and it also

  1024. in a sense

  1025. institutionalizes

  1026. hospitality

  1027. and generosity

1028. and how does it do

  1029. that when you don't

  1030. have a modern

  1031. welfare state

  1032. and everything like that

  1033. what it does

  1034. is it creates

  1035. a law

  1036. that says

  1037. a poor person

  1038. a hungry person

  1039. isn't allowed

  1040. to go into

  1041. their neighbor's field

  1042. and they're not allowed

  1043. to take a scythe

  1044. or whatever like that

  1045. and to cut down

  1046. a whole pile

  1047. of their grain

  1048. they're not allowed

  1049. to do that

  1050. that's forbidden

1051. but what a hungry person

  1052. could do

  1053. in ancient Israel

  1054. is when the grain

  1055. is there

  1056. when the orchard

  1057. is there

  1058. and they can see

  1059. the olives

  1060. or they can see

  1061. the figs

  1062. or the grain

  1063. on a day

  1064. when they're hungry

  1065. they can walk through

  1066. and they can pick

  1067. the stuff

1068. that they need to eat

1069. and they can eat it

  1070. they can walk through

  1071. the grape field

  1072. and they can take

  1073. some grapes

  1074. they can walk through

  1075. whatever other type

  1076. of fruit or figs

  1077. and they can pluck

  1078. some figs

  1079. and they can eat

  1080. to their hearts

  1081. and they can eat

  1082. till they're full

  1083. they can eat grain

  1084. and they can eat

  1085. till they're full

  1086. and the law

  1087. required landowners

1088. to allow that to happen

1089. and what in a sense

  1090. the law was doing

  1091. is the law was

  1092. making sure

  1093. that people

  1094. people

  1095. our hearts

  1096. naturally

  1097. are closed

  1098. to the poor

  1099. like our hearts

  1100. have a very

  1101. we have a deep

  1102. well of selfishness

  1103. within us

  1104. and it's very easy

  1105. to ignore the poor

1106. and to forget the poor

1107. and not care about the poor

1108. or to say that the poor

  1109. deserve what's happened

  1110. to them

  1111. if they just

  1112. pulled themselves up

  1113. by their belt

  1114. you know

  1115. their shoe straps

  1116. or whatever

  1117. they could carry

  1118. and the Old Testament

  1119. knew that because

  1120. of the sin

1121. that had come into the world

  1122. and broken the world

  1123. there would be easy

1124. for people to say that

  1125. so this law

  1126. was required

  1127. for the Jewish people

  1128. that they

  1129. as a landowner

  1130. you couldn't

  1131. go out and yell

  1132. and say

  1133. why are you walking

  1134. through my

  1135. why are you walking

  1136. through my fig orchard

  1137. and grabbing a couple

  1138. of figs to eat

1139. not allowed to do that

  1140. it was right

  1141. that a poor person

  1142. a hungry person

  1143. a traveler

  1144. where nobody

  1145. had offered them

  1146. hospitality

  1147. would have a means

  1148. by which they could

  1149. eat when their food

  1150. had run out

  1151. and so what

  1152. what the Pharisees

  1153. have done

  1154. is that they have

  1155. taken in a sense

  1156. that their view

  1157. of what should happen

  1158. in a church

  1159. type of world

  1160. that is so important

  1161. that the normal

  1162. concerns for

  1163. generosity

  1164. for hospitality

  1165. and for caring

  1166. for the poor

  1167. that you could

  1168. ignore that

  1169. that in fact

  1170. not only could you

  1171. ignore it

  1172. that you had to

  1173. stop it

  1174. you had to stop

  1175. caring for the poor

  1176. stop hospitality

  1177. stop generosity

  1178. because you had to

  1179. keep religious rules

  1180. around religious

  1181. observances

  1182. and that's what's

  1183. going on here

  1184. in the text

  1185. but listen to how

  1186. Jesus deals with it

  1187. in a surprising way

  1188. verse 25

  1189. and Jesus said

  1190. to them

  1191. have you never

  1192. read what

  1193. David

  1194. that's the fellow

  1195. who would later

  1196. become king

  1197. what David did

1198. when he was in need

  1199. and was hungry

  1200. he and those

  1201. who were with him

  1202. sorry

  1203. David and those

  1204. who were with him

  1205. were hungry

  1206. how verse 28

  1207. how he entered

  1208. the house of God

  1209. in the time of

  1210. Abiathar the high

  1211. priest

  1212. and ate the bread

  1213. of the presence

  1214. which is not

  1215. it is not lawful

  1216. for any but the

  1217. priest to eat

  1218. that's in the

  1219. Old Testament law

  1220. and also gave it

  1221. to those

  1222. who were with him

  1223. now just pause

  1224. what Jesus is doing

  1225. is if you

  1226. when you're reading

  1227. the story

  1228. which is found

  1229. in 1st Samuel

  1230. you read it

  1231. and you realize

  1232. that the text

  1233. this is always

1234. a bit of an issue

  1235. in narratives

  1236. that the narrative

  1237. isn't saying

1238. this is in a sense

  1239. something which is

  1240. bad that's happening

  1241. that the implication

  1242. is that this is

  1243. something good

  1244. that's happening

  1245. and so what

  1246. Jesus is saying

  1247. is if you look

  1248. at the stories

1249. you realize in a sense

  1250. there's a way

  1251. to understand

  1252. and order

  1253. the you know

  1254. order types of things

1255. I mean it would be

  1256. today as if

  1257. you know

  1258. even in places

  1259. which if you ever

  1260. go to Jerusalem

  1261. by the way

1262. if you go to Jerusalem

  1263. make sure you're there

  1264. on the Shabbat

  1265. it's shocking

  1266. to see a city

  1267. almost completely

  1268. shut down

  1269. like it's shocking

  1270. that you have

  1271. these four or five

  1272. lane

  1273. four lane roads

  1274. six lane

  1275. sorry

1276. like six or eight lane

  1277. three or four

  1278. on one side

  1279. three or four

  1280. going the other ways

  1281. that normally

  1282. is just

  1283. the traffic

  1284. is just going

  1285. like this

  1286. and you go there

  1287. on the Sabbath

  1288. and you could play

  1289. catch with your kid

  1290. on it virtually

  1291. because everything

  1292. just shuts down

  1293. it's really shocking

  1294. but even there

  1295. what you'd have

  1296. to understand

  1297. is you still have

  1298. to have doctors

  1299. working

  1300. stuff to feed

  1301. the poor

  1302. and part of the

  1303. reason we sort of

  1304. get that

  1305. is from the Bible

  1306. and how Jesus

  1307. helps us

  1308. to reframe

  1309. how you order

  1310. these types

  1311. of things

  1312. it's not that

  1313. you should just

  1314. disregard the Sabbath

  1315. but you've got to

  1316. realize that

  1317. you should keep

  1318. the Sabbath

  1319. but you keep

  1320. the Sabbath

  1321. in such a way

  1322. that you still

  1323. practice hospitality

1324. still care for the poor

  1325. and you're still

  1326. generous

1327. and he uses a story

1328. but then he goes on

  1329. and says

1330. and he said to them

  1331. the Sabbath

  1332. was made for man

  1333. and woman

  1334. not man and woman

  1335. for the Sabbath

1336. so the Son of Man

  1337. is Lord

  1338. even of the Sabbath

  1339. if you come to

  1340. an Anglican wedding

  1341. and you use the

  1342. Book of Common Prayer

  1343. which is sort of

  1344. the basis of

  1345. modern Anglicanism

  1346. one of the things

  1347. which is said

  1348. is that marriage

  1349. was instituted

  1350. of God

  1351. in the time

  1352. of man's innocency

  1353. that's the old language

  1354. and what it's saying

1355. is that if you go back

  1356. and you look

  1357. in Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1358. and Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  1359. before evil

  1360. had entered the world

  1361. before sin and death

  1362. had entered the world

  1363. God created

  1364. a good world

  1365. and part of the

  1366. good world's creation

  1367. was that he created

  1368. men and women

  1369. male and female

  1370. with the hope

  1371. that many of them

  1372. would marry

1373. and that was part of

  1374. God's original

  1375. creational intention

  1376. it's not as if

  1377. you know

  1378. that later on

  1379. he had to have

  1380. a law against stealing

1381. well you didn't have to

  1382. the law against stealing

  1383. isn't in a sense

  1384. part of God's

  1385. original creational intent

  1386. you have laws

  1387. to go to church

  1388. well that

  1389. you wouldn't have

  1390. had laws about

  1391. not laws

  1392. you wouldn't have

  1393. had encouragements

  1394. to go to church

  1395. that's something

  1396. that's happened

1397. as a result of the fall

  1398. and the remedy

  1399. of the fall

1400. but part of the way

  1401. God created

  1402. human beings

  1403. is that he made

  1404. them male and female

  1405. man and woman

  1406. with the intent

  1407. that they

  1408. some at least

  1409. would marry

  1410. and that that was

  1411. part of God's

  1412. original good design

  1413. and what Jesus

  1414. is pointing out

  1415. here as well

  1416. is that the

  1417. Sabbath

  1418. is also part

  1419. of God's

  1420. original good design

  1421. because in the

  1422. six days of work

  1423. and in the seventh

  1424. day that God

  1425. rests

  1426. so here we see

  1427. Jesus is actually

  1428. making a second

  1429. claim to be God

  1430. he's making a second

  1431. claim to be God

  1432. he's saying

  1433. that the Lord

  1434. who created the

  1435. Sabbath

  1436. is now standing

  1437. in front of you

  1438. and he's pointing out

  1439. that why did God

  1440. create the Sabbath

  1441. God created the Sabbath

  1442. to bless human beings

  1443. God created the Sabbath

  1444. so that they would

  1445. know that there's

  1446. a dignity to work

  1447. there's a goodness

  1448. to work

  1449. but there's also

  1450. a goodness

  1451. and a dignity

  1452. to rest

  1453. and that part

  1454. of the dignity

  1455. of what part of

  1456. the thing about

  1457. the Sabbath

  1458. is that human beings

1459. do not have to worry

1460. and grasp all the time

  1461. that God will bless

1462. and so you can have

1463. a day when all you do

  1464. is you gather

  1465. to spend fellowship

  1466. with God

  1467. fellowship with other

  1468. human beings

  1469. to sleep

  1470. to eat lots of

  1471. extra food

  1472. because God

  1473. in his bounty

  1474. is desiring

  1475. to bless you

  1476. and to give you

  1477. a rhythm

  1478. and an order

  1479. to your life

  1480. that will make you

  1481. more fruitful

  1482. and able to fulfill

  1483. your creational intentions

  1484. and that's what God

  1485. has done

  1486. in creating the Sabbath

1487. and this is how it touches

  1488. a third whole category

  1489. of intuitions

  1490. or clues

  1491. like if one set

  1492. of intuitions

  1493. and clues

  1494. is that love

  1495. is stronger

  1496. than death

  1497. like you can't

  1498. prove that

  1499. scientifically

  1500. an atheist

  1501. would say

  1502. that you just

  1503. I mean

  1504. Nietzsche

  1505. would just say

  1506. you don't have

  1507. the courage

  1508. to reject

  1509. the Christian faith

  1510. to acknowledge

  1511. that God

  1512. is dead

  1513. but we have

  1514. these dang

  1515. clues

  1516. and intuitions

  1517. that love

  1518. is stronger

  1519. than death

  1520. and we have

  1521. these dang

  1522. clues

  1523. and intuitions

  1524. that the world

  1525. is broken

  1526. and that

  1527. there must

  1528. be a way

  1529. to have the world

  1530. be unbroken

  1531. and fixed

1532. and this is a different

  1533. type of intuition

  1534. and it's saying

  1535. it's the intuition

  1536. that comes

  1537. if you're on a canoe trip

  1538. or you're camping

  1539. and you're just

  1540. in the beauty

  1541. of nature

  1542. and the stillness

  1543. if those of you

  1544. who've been outside

  1545. of the city

  1546. where you're far away

  1547. from the city

  1548. there's a

  1549. there's a type

  1550. of a weight

  1551. or a presence

  1552. of the silence

  1553. it's not just

  1554. the same

1555. as being in the city

  1556. where it's silent

  1557. and even

  1558. not just so much

  1559. that with nature

  1560. my wife and I

  1561. like about a month

  1562. or so ago

  1563. we were in Montreal

  1564. and we went

  1565. through Mount Royal Park

  1566. and everything

  1567. and there's just

  1568. something beautiful

  1569. about that mixture

  1570. of the beauty

  1571. of nature

  1572. and kids playing

  1573. and all men

  1574. and all women

  1575. walking

  1576. and you're safe

  1577. and at peace

  1578. and you just have

  1579. a sense of

  1580. there's something

  1581. about that

  1582. that's just

  1583. more

  1584. there's something

  1585. transcendent

  1586. about it

  1587. just from the

  1588. original creation

  1589. see part of the

  1590. problem that we

  1591. have in Canada

  1592. and we Canadians

  1593. drink it in

  1594. I mean we

  1595. Christians

  1596. drink it in

  1597. and I think

  1598. actually it's

  1599. a fundamentally

  1600. human problem

  1601. that's worse

  1602. at some times

  1603. than others

  1604. is that we have

  1605. unrecognized

  1606. incoherence

  1607. unrecognized

  1608. incoherence

  1609. you've heard me

  1610. talk about it

  1611. before

  1612. but if you think

  1613. about it

  1614. for a second

  1615. on one hand

  1616. we read an article

  1617. that tells us

  1618. that evolution

  1619. is true

  1620. and that everything

  1621. that came to exist

  1622. was through

  1623. that can be

  1624. explained through

  1625. that mechanism

  1626. and then maybe

  1627. after that

1628. we go to a funeral

  1629. where we hear

  1630. about a person

  1631. who's died

  1632. or we talk

  1633. to a friend

  1634. who's lost

  1635. a loved one

  1636. and we both

  1637. just say

  1638. they've gone

  1639. to a better place

  1640. never sort of

  1641. thinking

  1642. that if we've

  1643. actually

  1644. if there is

  1645. a better place

  1646. to go to

  1647. then that means

  1648. that how you've

  1649. just described

  1650. how things came

  1651. to be

  1652. can't be true

  1653. that that's

  1654. like

  1655. incoherent

  1656. and then after

  1657. you've done that

  1658. you have a bit

  1659. of another discussion

  1660. about how to

  1661. understand a

  1662. particular moral

  1663. or ethical issue

  1664. that you're

  1665. trying to understand

  1666. but you never

  1667. stop to think

  1668. one moment

  1669. my understanding

  1670. of the better place

  1671. has nothing to do

  1672. with how I understand

1673. how to live my life

  1674. in a way

  1675. that's good

  1676. and that has

  1677. nothing to do

  1678. with how I think

  1679. things came to be

  1680. but we never

  1681. stop to think

  1682. that those things

  1683. might be completely

  1684. incoherent

  1685. and then we go

  1686. after having that

  1687. discussion on our way

  1688. home

  1689. we go to buy

  1690. some crystals

  1691. or some other

  1692. types of techniques

  1693. that can help us

  1694. to get in touch

  1695. with the spiritual

  1696. things

  1697. never stopping

  1698. to think

  1699. that how we think

  1700. that right and wrong

  1701. happens

  1702. and how that

  1703. better place is

  1704. that when we die

  1705. and how things

  1706. came to be

  1707. in crystals

  1708. that's completely

  1709. incoherent

  1710. like those things

  1711. don't fit

  1712. like they don't

  1713. fit with each other

  1714. at all

  1715. like the better

  1716. place if that's true

  1717. then how on earth

  1718. does that work

  1719. with the crystals

  1720. and how is it

  1721. that you can have

  1722. a good life

  1723. but that has

  1724. nothing to do

  1725. with the

  1726. like that's

  1727. completely and

  1728. utterly incoherent

  1729. and then from that

  1730. we might go

  1731. to have

  1732. to watch

1733. to listen to some music

  1734. and have a profound

  1735. aesthetic experience

  1736. but never stop

  1737. to think

  1738. that our aesthetic

  1739. experience

  1740. is different

  1741. than the crystals

  1742. which is different

  1743. than how you live

  1744. which is different

  1745. than the better

  1746. place you go

  1747. when you die

  1748. and it's different

  1749. than evolution

  1750. and we walk

  1751. through life

  1752. never realizing

  1753. that these things

  1754. are completely

  1755. in our

  1756. we live

  1757. in complete

  1758. and utter

  1759. unconscious

  1760. incoherence

  1761. and the shocking

  1762. thing here

  1763. of the bible

  1764. is that Jesus

  1765. says he is

  1766. the bridegroom

  1767. and Jesus

  1768. says he is

  1769. the lord

  1770. of the sabbath

  1771. and Jesus

  1772. says he is

  1773. the bridegroom

  1774. who will out of

  1775. for love's sake

  1776. and mercy's sake

  1777. will die

  1778. for the beloved

  1779. that in a sense

  1780. when you become

  1781. a Christian

  1782. you are being

  1783. invited to leave

  1784. your incoherence

  1785. behind

  1786. and to walk

  1787. to the end

  1788. to understand

  1789. that your intuitions

  1790. all meet

  1791. in just one person

  1792. the true and living

  1793. God

  1794. Jesus

  1795. God

  1796. the son of God

  1797. who came to die

  1798. for you

  1799. and you see

  1800. it's why

  1801. when you

  1802. come to

  1803. understand

  1804. that it's

  1805. only in

  1806. Jesus

  1807. that the

  1808. incoherent

  1809. intuitions

  1810. and longings

  1811. and practices

  1812. of our lives

  1813. can start

  1814. to find

  1815. a unity

  1816. not just

  1817. a unity

  1818. that we

  1819. create

  1820. because we

  1821. have to

  1822. find

  1823. a unity

  1824. but because

  1825. it's a natural

  1826. unity

  1827. it's not

  1828. something we

  1829. create

  1830. or invent

  1831. it's something

  1832. we discover

  1833. or recognize

  1834. it's not

  1835. something

  1836. that we

  1837. manufacture

  1838. but something

  1839. that's there

  1840. that we can

  1841. enter into

  1842. and that when

  1843. we enter

  1844. into it

  1845. we can learn

  1846. to live

  1847. out of it

  1848. and as we

  1849. learn to

  1850. live out

  1851. of it

  1852. as we let

  1853. the story

  1854. of the gospel

  1855. and the story

  1856. of the God

  1857. who's created

  1858. all things

  1859. and the breaking

  1860. of all things

  1861. and the fact

  1862. that God

  1863. has done

  1864. something

  1865. in the person

  1866. of his son

  1867. which will

  1868. restore

  1869. and rectify

  1870. and renew

  1871. and rebuild

  1872. all things

  1873. and there's

  1874. this one

  1875. story

  1876. it helps us

  1877. to understand

  1878. how we can

  1879. see

  1880. here's the

  1881. problem

  1882. with fasting

  1883. people use

  1884. fasting

  1885. to make

  1886. themselves

  1887. more powerful

  1888. but what's

  1889. at the heart

  1890. of being

  1891. how many

  1892. people

  1893. don't you

  1894. think

  1895. if you're

  1896. watching

  1897. a TV

  1898. show

  1899. or a movie

  1900. and the

  1901. person

  1902. says

  1903. I'd really

  1904. like to

  1905. have a

  1906. love

  1907. relationship

  1908. I think

  1909. what I

  1910. got to

  1911. do

  1912. is make

  1913. myself

  1914. way more

  1915. powerful

  1916. and people

  1917. would be

  1918. going

  1919. I think

  1920. making

  1921. yourself

  1922. more

  1923. and more

  1924. and more

  1925. and more

  1926. and more

  1927. and more

  1928. and more

  1929. and more

  1930. and more

  1931. and more

  1932. powerful

  1933. isn't

  1934. probably

  1935. the way

  1936. that you

  1937. enter

  1938. into a

  1939. love

  1940. relationship

  1941. because

  1942. that

  1943. normally

  1944. implies

  1945. I don't

  1946. know

  1947. vulnerability

  1948. giving in

  1949. forgiving

  1950. the other

  1951. person

  1952. you see

  1953. in religious

  1954. traditions

  1955. and spiritual

  1956. traditions

  1957. you fast

  1958. to clean

  1959. your body

  1960. of toxins

  1961. to be

  1962. more

  1963. powerful

  1964. you fast

  1965. to show

  1966. that you're

  1967. part of

  1968. the justified

  1969. to earn

  1970. those brownie

  1971. points

  1972. to be right

  1973. with God

  1974. in other

  1975. words

  1976. to become

  1977. more

  1978. powerful

  1979. but in

  1980. Christian

  1981. fasting

  1982. and obviously

  1983. Christians get

  1984. this wrong

  1985. all the time

  1986. they slip

  1987. into doing

  1988. it as a

  1989. way to

  1990. try to

  1991. get more

  1992. power

  1993. earned

  1994. brownie

  1995. points

  1996. but at

  1997. the heart

  1998. of fasting

  1999. is that

  2000. you voluntarily

  2001. it's connected

  2002. to that aspect

  2003. of the love

  2004. relationship

  2005. where

  2006. you know

  2007. if a husband

  2008. is never

  2009. vulnerable

  2010. with his

  2011. wife

  2012. the husband

  2013. is walking

  2014. away from

  2015. his wife

  2016. and pushing

  2017. his wife

  2018. away

  2019. we fast

  2020. not to become

  2021. strong

  2022. but to become

  2023. vulnerable

  2024. and to remember

  2025. that we have

  2026. this great

  2027. bridegroom

  2028. who's died

  2029. for us

  2030. and loves

  2031. us

  2032. and that

  2033. we are

  2034. closer to

  2035. him

  2036. in weakness

  2037. this whole

  2038. image of

  2039. the Lord

  2040. of the

  2041. Sabbath

  2042. anyway

  2043. we'll stop

  2044. there

  2045. no

  2046. I'm going

  2047. to do

  2048. that

  2049. there's

  2050. an old

  2051. joke

  2052. there's

  2053. an oil

  2054. tanker

  2055. going down

  2056. in the

  2057. water

  2058. and

  2059. they see

  2060. one

  2061. light

  2062. up ahead

  2063. big

  2064. light

  2065. but

  2066. just one

  2067. oil

  2068. tanker

  2069. has lots

  2070. of light

  2071. so they

  2072. get on

  2073. the thing

  2074. they connect

  2075. with him

  2076. on the

  2077. radio

  2078. and say

  2079. we're

  2080. an oil

  2081. tanker

  2082. you're

  2083. just

  2084. you know

  2085. we're

  2086. coming

  2087. you've

  2088. got to

  2089. get out

  2090. of her

  2091. way

  2092. the

  2093. person

  2094. at the

  2095. other end

  2096. of the

  2097. light

  2098. says

  2099. no

  2100. no

  2101. no

  2102. no

  2103. no

  2104. you

  2105. you've

  2106. got to

  2107. move

  2108. we're

  2109. not

  2110. moving

  2111. and the

  2112. oil

  2113. tanker

  2114. gets back

  2115. online

  2116. and says

  2117. no

  2118. no

  2119. no

  2120. no

  2121. you don't

  2122. understand

  2123. we're

  2124. an oil

  2125. tanker

  2126. you've got to

  2127. move

  2128. you've got to

  2129. get out

  2130. of the

  2131. way

  2132. the

  2133. other

  2134. light

  2135. comes

  2136. back

  2137. I know

  2138. we only

  2139. have

  2140. one

  2141. light

  2142. but

  2143. you're

  2144. the

  2145. one

  2146. who

  2147. has

  2148. to

  2149. move

  2150. you

  2151. have

  2152. to

  2153. move

  2154. we're

  2155. not

  2156. moving

  2157. the

  2158. oil

  2159. tanker

  2160. says

  2161. no

  2162. no

  2163. no

  2164. no

  2165. no

  2166. they're

  2167. really

  2168. getting

  2169. frustrated

  2170. you

  2171. you need

  2172. to

  2173. understand

  2174. we're

  2175. a

  2176. huge

  2177. super

  2178. oil

  2179. tanker

  2180. you've

  2181. got to

  2182. get out

  2183. of the

  2184. way

  2185. and

  2186. finally

  2187. the

  2188. person

  2189. in

  2190. their

  2191. life

  2192. says

  2193. we're

  2194. a

  2195. lighthouse

  2196. you've

  2197. got to

  2198. get out

  2199. of

  2200. the

  2201. way

  2202. and

  2203. you

  2204. see

  2205. that's

  2206. what's

  2207. happening

  2208. here

  2209. in

  2210. these

  2211. stories

  2212. it's

  2213. part

  2214. of

  2215. what's

  2216. at

  2217. the

  2218. heart

  2219. of

  2220. the

  2221. very

  2222. Christian

  2223. faith

  2224. if

  2225. Jesus

  2226. really

  2227. is

  2228. the

  2229. bridegroom

  2230. if

  2231. he

  2232. really

  2233. is

  2234. the

  2235. Lord

  2236. of

  2237. the

  2238. Sabbath

  2239. then

  2240. what

  2241. that

  2242. means

  2243. is

  2244. that

  2245. we

  2246. in

  2247. a

  2248. sense

  2249. don't

  2250. just

  2251. sort

  2252. of

  2253. fit

  2254. him

  2255. into

  2256. our

  2257. life

  2258. as

  2259. if

  2260. somehow

  2261. our

  2262. criteria

  2263. our

  2264. way

  2265. of

  2266. understanding

  2267. the

  2268. part

  2269. of

  2270. our

  2271. day

  2272. or

  2273. our

  2274. week

  2275. in

  2276. other

  2277. words

  2278. he

  2279. has

  2280. to

  2281. move

  2282. around

  2283. us

  2284. because

  2285. we're

  2286. big

  2287. and

  2288. he's

  2289. small

  2290. that

  2291. part

  2292. of

  2293. what

  2294. the

  2295. Christian

  2296. life

  2297. involves

  2298. is

  2299. coming

  2300. to

  2301. understand

  2302. that

  2303. he's

  2304. the

  2305. lighthouse

  2306. and

  2307. we

  2308. got

  2309. to

  2310. move

  2311. around

  2312. him

  2313. that

  2314. the

  2315. criteria

  2316. that

  2317. he

  2318. reveals

  2319. judge

  2320. our

  2321. criteria

  2322. that

  2323. we

  2324. fit

  2325. into

  2326. the

  2327. shape

  2328. of

  2329. what

  2330. he

  2331. brings

  2332. into

  2333. the

  2334. world

  2335. rather

  2336. than

  2337. what

  2338. he

  2339. brings

  2340. into

  2341. the

  2342. world

  2343. fits

  2344. into

  2345. the

  2346. shape

  2347. of

  2348. what

  2349. I'm

  2350. doing

  2351. with

  2352. my

  2353. world

  2354. that's

  2355. what it

  2356. means for

  2357. him to be

  2358. the

  2359. Lord

  2360. and to

  2361. be

  2362. the

  2363. bridegroom

  2364. and

  2365. frankly

  2366. for human

  2367. beings

  2368. that's

  2369. very

  2370. scary

  2371. that I

  2372. have to

  2373. relinquish

  2374. some

  2375. control

  2376. of my

  2377. life

  2378. and

  2379. start

  2380. to

  2381. have

  2382. his

  2383. criteria

  2384. be

  2385. the

  2386. criteria

  2387. by

  2388. which

  2389. I

  2390. evaluate

  2391. politics

  2392. and

  2393. money

  2394. and

  2395. sexuality

  2396. and

  2397. my

  2398. time

  2399. and

  2400. family

  2401. and

  2402. justice

  2403. rather than

  2404. him fitting

  2405. into my

  2406. commitments

  2407. and if

  2408. you're scared

  2409. by that

  2410. welcome to

  2411. the human

  2412. race

  2413. but all I

  2414. can say

  2415. is

  2416. what this

  2417. text is

  2418. telling us

  2419. is

  2420. why

  2421. wouldn't

  2422. you want

  2423. to

  2424. have

  2425. your

  2426. ego

  2427. die

  2428. so

  2429. that

  2430. love

  2431. forms

  2432. you

  2433. why

  2434. wouldn't

  2435. you

  2436. want

  2437. your

  2438. order

  2439. alguém

  2440. companies

  2441. and

  2442. blessing

  2443. forms

  2444. you

  2445. why

  2446. would

2447. you want to think that your ego has to rule those things?

2448. Don't you and I understand that if we die to our ego

2449. and allows the one who loved us so much that he died for us

2450. to form us, that that is both a way that

2451. the intuitions and longings and clues of our hearts

2452. actually we start to realize that they're not just intuitions or clues

2453. but we can begin to enter into them and live out of them?

2454. If you're hearing this or watching this and you're not a Christian

2455. that's why you should become a Christian. You should say to Jesus, Jesus be my Savior and my Lord.

2456. And for those who are here and those who are here who are Christians

2457. that's why we say it is so good that we gather on a Sunday morning

2458. to remember this and to recommit to it.

2459. To remember, yes, I know it's hard to let my sexuality

2460. be controlled by the gospel but it's worth it. I know it's hard to let my

2461. relationship with money be shaped by the gospel but

2462. gosh, it's worth it. Yes, my desire for vengeance, I want to just let that loose

2463. but gosh, it's good to remember that it's better to be shaped by the gospel.

2464. Shaped by the gospel and formed by the gospel

2465. and learn to live out of something other than injustice or

  2466. hatred or vengeance.

2467. It is so good to be a follower of Jesus and recommit to that.

2468. Yes, let's live this week for his glory and the good of the city

2469. and for our true good.

2470. I invite you to stand.

2471. Father, if there are any here who can feel

2472. you knocking on the door of their heart,

2473. we ask that the Holy Spirit would help them to

2474. open the door and to look at Jesus and say,

2475. Jesus, please be my Savior and please be my Lord.

2476. Thank you that you are the bridegroom who died,

2477. that I might be beautiful and free,

2478. part of your beautiful and free people.

2479. And Father, for those of us who have already opened the door

2480. and allowed Jesus to be our Savior and our Lord,

2481. we give you thanks and praise that we can gather on Sundays to recommit.

2482. Father, for those of us who have mentoring relationships

2483. or spiritual friendships or in small groups,

2484. we give you thanks and praise that there are other times

2485. when we can gather, whether it's with college and careers

2486. or youth group or small groups,

2487. and talk through how to live life shaped by the gospel

2488. to share our triumphs and share our sorrows

2489. and share our burden for the world and for the city

2490. and for just life and be able to share that around the gospel

2491. and to pray into that and to be formed by the gospel.

2492. Father, we thank you that you have provided these means of grace

2493. that are so important that we can gather around and be part of.

2494. And Father, we thank you for your word.

2495. We thank you for the gospel.

2496. We thank you for Jesus.

2497. We thank you that he is both the Lord of the Sabbath from creation

2498. and he, by being the bridegroom,

2499. is to be this, that you have called us to be part of a covenant of love

2500. and that by his death for us, the bridegroom,

2501. that he is the one who has made us, the church, beautiful.

  2502. Beautiful.

2503. Father, we thank you for this.

2504. Grip us with the gospel that we might live this week

2505. shaped by the gospel, living for your glory.

2506. And we ask this in the name of Jesus and all God's people said,

  2507. Amen.
